1 week in Mauritius: Epic 7-8 day Itinerary (First Time Visit)

1 week in mauritius: the perfect 7-8 day itinerary.

Planning a one-week trip to Mauritius ?

7 days in Mauritius is perfect to thoroughly explore everything this destination has to offer.

To help you prepare, I’ll detail here the ideal itinerary for an excellent stay .

Of course, you’re not obliged to follow this to the letter, but this is a great foundation to simplify your holiday planning and ensure you don’t miss anything on this paradise island !

Spending one week in Mauritius gives you ample time to discover all the must-see places and to enjoy the pristine sandy beaches .

From the magnificent beaches of the North to the Black River Gorges National Park , the Morne mountain , the natural wonders of Chamarel , and the tranquil town of Mahébourg : a fantastic journey awaits you!

Just think about the amazing week that awaits you and let me guide you!

Day 1 – Grand Bay and the Northern Beaches

Day 2 – port-louis and pamplemousses botanical garden, best hotels in the north of mauritius, day 3 – bellemare and île aux cerfs, best hotels on the east coast of mauritius, day 4 – flic-en-flac and black river gorges national park, best hotels near flic-en-flac, in the west of mauritius, day 5 – le morne brabant, day 6 – southwest road trip: grand bassin and chamarel, best hotels near le morne and chamarel (southwest), day 7 – mahébourg and blue bay, the best hotels in southeast mauritius, travel insurance for mauritius: my advice, you’re traveling to mauritius these articles will help you, step 1: north of mauritius (2 days).

Finally, the long-awaited day has arrived, and you’re stepping foot on the island!

To make it easier to move from one place to another, I strongly advise you to rent a car locally . Having a car to visit Mauritius is almost essential and will make your stay much more enjoyable.

Sure, the country is quite well served by public transport, but the journey times are often huge. A car will save you the wait and will allow you to save a considerable amount of time to make the most of your trip.

It’s usually best to go through a comparison site. I personally use Booking.com Cars , there’s no better service in my opinion.

By using Booking Cars you can:

  • Easily compare all car rental offers in Mauritius , sorted by price or type of vehicle
  • Benefit from comprehensive insurance protection , for a 100% stress-free holiday!
  • Get a quick refund in case of an incident
  • Cancel your reservation for free right up to the last minute.

Once you’re all set behind the wheel, head straight to the north of the island .

Why start with the North coast? Because it’s arguably the most attractive part of the country , one of the most lively and a great way to acclimate right from the start.

For many, Mauritius is about the tropical climate, coconut trees, turquoise waters, and soft sand underfoot.

And you’re about to see that for yourself! In this region, you’ll find the most beautiful beaches on the island and you’ll feel completely transported from the first day of your visit.

Cap Malheureux, Pereybere, Grand Bay, or the beaches of Mont Choisy and Trou aux Biches a little further… So many heavenly places to start off your one-week stay in Mauritius in the best way possible.

Cap Malheureux Mauritius

Without a doubt, the must-see of the North coast is Grand Bay .

This former fishing village turned into a beach resort is the favorite destination of expatriates and the hub of the region.

The coastal town of Grand Bay has a charm of its own: the place is very lively, especially in the evening, and its beach with colorful boats is unmatched elsewhere.

The street vendors along the beach add to its attractiveness and make it such a vibrant spot.

For foodies, I highly recommend the guided gastronomic tour of Grand Bay . A unique “food tour” on the island to taste Mauritian specialties while discovering the most beautiful parts of the city off the beaten track.

To book your guided gastronomic tour of Grand Bay , click on the button below :

Grand Bay and its surroundings are as pleasant during the day as they are in the evening. You can definitely spend the whole day there , and end on a tasty note with a dinner by the sea.

I can’t recommend the restaurant Les Canisses enough for a delicious meal facing the lagoon.

With everything that the North coast has to offer, your first of 7 days in Mauritius will be jam-packed!

To prepare your day in the north of Mauritius, I invite you to read my dedicated article: What to do in Grand Bay and its surroundings?

Grand Bay Mauritius

How can you visit a country without seeing its capital? It’s impossible to spend a week in Mauritius without experiencing Port-Louis !

After a day relaxing on the beach while still a bit tired from the journey, following up with a visit to the capital is a great idea to continue your trip.

Port-Louis is not only the cultural and historical center of Mauritius but it’s also a city brimming with life!

If the second day of your trip falls on a Sunday , you should consider rescheduling your day in Port-Louis as the city is very quiet on this day of the week and you would miss out on the usual hustle and bustle which is so distinctive.

Your visit to the capital will allow you to learn more about Mauritius’ colonial background. For that, you should definitely stop by several key sites:

La Place d’Armes to start with.

It’s located at the entrance of the city, opposite the Government Palace. There, you’ll find a statue erected at the center of Mahé Labourdonnais , a French governor and the founder of the city in 1735.

Fort Adélaïde , also known as the Citadel of Port-Louis , is another monument worth seeing in Port-Louis. You’ll find it overlooking the city.

This building was constructed by the British in 1834 as a base for cannon fire against the French army.

Also make sure to visit the Central Market , a large covered market that is full of exotic fruits, vegetables, and spices.

The Caudan Waterfront , the oldest shopping center in Mauritius, is also worth a visit. Built on the waterfront, it’s an ideal spot for a shopping break and a taste of local flavors.

A museum is often the best way to learn more about a country. The Blue Penny Museum , located at the entrance to Caudan, promises a very interesting and educational visit about the art and political history of Mauritius.

There’s also a super cool thing to do in Port-Louis, which is the guided tour that combines history, culture, and street-food . In my opinion, it’s the best way to discover the authentic Port-Louis .

This tour is in high demand, so you should book it now to secure your spot by clicking below:

Caudan Waterfront Port-Louis

Allocate 2 hours afterwards to visit the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden !

Not far from Port-Louis (about 20 minutes by car ), it’s an unmissable visit during your 7 days in Mauritius.

The garden spans over 37 hectares and is filled with several hundred species of plants from all corners of the world.

You might also catch a glimpse of the tropical wildlife with geckos , chameleons , fruit bats , and colorful birds hopping around in the branches!

It’s a place where I myself love to take a stroll , and find it very refreshing for both body and spirit.

If you really don’t want to miss anything from your day in Port-Louis and the Pamplemousses Garden, you can opt for a guided tour .

Your guide-driver will pick you up directly from your hotel and take you to the highlights of the capital then to Pamplemousses Garden , and finish off with a tour of the beach.

To book your private tour in Port-Louis and Pamplemousses , simply click on this button:

Pamplemousse Botanical Garden Mauritius

During your one-week stay in Mauritius, you have 2 accommodation options:

  • You can change lodgings at each stage , to fully enjoy each region and minimize travel time
  • Or you can choose to stay at the same accommodation throughout your stay since the island is small (or change hotels only once or twice).

The advantage of staying in the North is being close to the most beautiful beaches on the island , in a vibrant and lively area with many restaurants and shops .

If you’re looking for accommodation in the North of Mauritius , here are the places I recommend:

  • Cosi Dolce : a villa with a swimming pool in Peyrébère, 700m from the beach, with a fully-equipped kitchen and a large terrace where breakfast is served each morning. There’s also a bar, a garden, and a private outdoor pool. Very friendly staff and an ideal location. From 80€ per night for a 5-person welcome (2 bedrooms with 2 double beds and a spare bed).
  • Bleu de Toi Boutique Guesthouse : a charming guesthouse just a 5-minute walk from the beach, run by warm hosts. Double rooms and studios with elegant and fresh decor. Enjoy the garden, covered terrace, and swimming pool. Expect to pay at least 150€ per night for 2 people.
  • Ocean V Hotel : a 4-star hotel in Peyrébère, 50m from the beach. It features an infinity pool, a gym, a jacuzzi, and a restaurant. Stay in a comfortable double room starting at 150€ per night , breakfast included.
  • Sakoa Boutik Hotel : a superb small hotel in Trou-aux-Biches, situated right on the beach in a dreamlike setting. White sandy beach and pool, bar, restaurant, and spa. Attentive staff and comfortable rooms. Double room from 230€ per night. I definitely recommend it for a high-end stay in Mauritius .
  • LUX* Grand Baie Resort & Residences : this is THE holiday hotel in the north, as luxurious as you can get, perfect for those who want to go all out! Double room from 450€ per night (breakfast extra at 25€).

Want to make your vacation in Mauritius truly unforgettable ?

Then you should include some  exciting tours and activities !

Here are the  5 best experiences to enjoy during your stay in Mauritius :

(Simply click on the orange links for details and to book)

1. Catamaran Cruise to the Northern Islets – Spend a day at sea in a heavenly setting with stops on several islands

2. Seaplane Flight Over the Underwater Waterfall – A breathtaking experience that’s a must-try at least once in your life!

3. Day Cruise to Île aux Cerfs (with onboard barbecue) – Sail through the stunning East lagoon, snorkel and explore Île aux Cerfs

4. Private Southwest Tour – Discover Chamarel, Black River Gorges, Grand Bassin and more, accompanied by a passionate local guide

5. Guided Hike up Morne Brabant at Sunrise – THE essential hike in Mauritius, with an exceptional view from the summit!

BONUS – My personal favorite: Kayaking Adventure on Amber Island – An off-the-beaten-track adventure at the heart of the mangrove forest!

Step 2: The East Coast of Mauritius (1 Day)

Let’s start the third day!

I know, it’s been 24 hours since you haven’t been to the beach and you already miss it. It’s normal, but don’t worry, we’re heading right back!

Hit the road towards the East coast and the legendary Bellemare beach.

It’s not just an iconic spot for tourists but also for Mauritians who love to picnic here on weekends.

This beach will wow you too. Lying on the white sand, under the shade of coconut trees, you will feel truly peaceful and far from home.

Its clear and shallow waters are perfect for snorkeling and are equally inviting for a relaxing swim.

If this getaway has stirred your desire for tropical beaches, take a look at Palmar beach , wilder and just 5 minutes away by car.

bellemare plage Maurice

A bit further on, you’ll reach the charming village of Trou d’Eau Douce.

From there, you’ll be able to proceed to the second major highlight of your day: Île aux Cerfs.

It’s an essential visit during a week-long trip in Mauritius!

There are boat shuttles to Île aux Cerfs from Trou d’Eau Douce beach or pier , with departures every 20 to 30 minutes.

Just crossing the lagoon is beautiful!

Once on the small island, you’ll find plenty to do. The setting is already magical with white sand and an endless expanse of turquoise ocean before your eyes.

It’s obviously a very popular spot for vacationers, so don’t expect to find yourself on a deserted island.

Île aux Cerfs isn’t inhabited but is fully dedicated to tourism.

It offers numerous activities: water sports ( towed tubing, parasailing , water skiing …), golf courses, and some shops.

There are also various restaurants for lunch or dinner in a wonderful setting.

However, if you’re in search of quietness , you’ll have no trouble finding a nice spot away from the crowds to relax on the beach.

I highly recommend choosing this full-day excursion that takes you around Île aux Cerfs and also includes a visit to the Grande-Rivière-Sud-Est waterfalls. Besides, the excursion includes meals and drinks.

Book it now by clicking below:

If you’re seeking peace and quiet, the East Coast is the perfect place to stay in Mauritius. It’s one of the most tranquil and unspoiled regions on the island.

Here are my accommodation picks for the East:

  • EvaZion : Located in Grande Rivière Sud-Est, in a quiet natural setting, 20 minutes from Bellemare Beach. Comfortable double rooms with sleek decor from €80/night . Outdoor pool, restaurant, kayaks available, and direct shuttle to Île aux Cerfs. Extremely welcoming staff and tranquil surroundings.
  • Otentic Eco Tent Experience : Have an incredible time sleeping in a comfortable tent in the great outdoors, nestled between the river and the ocean, luxury camping style. Tents suitable for 2 to 5 people starting at €130 per night. Loads of on-site activities, pool, and a delicious restaurant featuring local products. This is definitely my top pick for a rejuvenating stay on the East coast of Mauritius!
  • Veranda Palmar Beach Hotel : A beautiful hotel set by the lagoon in Bellemare. Bright, spacious, and cozy double rooms with balcony from €175/night , meals included. Access to the beach, pool, and spa.
  • Le Touessrok : A grand luxury hotel by the sea in Trou d’Eau Douce. A paradisiacal setting with pools, restaurants, a wellness center, and even access to the hotel’s private little island! Top-notch double rooms with balcony and sea view for €450/night , breakfast included. I recommend it if you’re looking for a luxury stay in Mauritius!

Île aux Cerfs Mauritius

Stage 3: The West / South-West of Mauritius (3 days)

Now that you’re familiar with the North and the East of Mauritius, let’s take a little trip to the West coast, which is just as enchanting as the rest of the island.

To kick off this new stage of your 7 days in Mauritius, head to Flic-en-Flac and its 8 km of white sand.

It’s one of the most popular beaches in the country, distinguished by its border of Filao trees , the Mauritian pines.

In addition to creating a beautiful landscape, they provide the perfect shade to relax while gazing at the stunning turquoise lagoon . Sounds like a dream, right?

Like most of Mauritius’ beaches, there’s something for everyone: whether it’s swimming, sunbathing on the sand , or snorkeling to see the colorful fish .

Around the beach, you will also find numerous scuba diving centers .

If you’re looking for this type of activity, you should book a diving session in Tamarin Bay , to discover the beauty of the underwater world with a fantastic team!

To book your diving session near Flic-en-Flac, just click here:

Flic en Flac beach

On Flic-en-Flac Beach, there are several food trucks offering snacks and fruit. You should really stop by the one named Roti Aka to try their faratas (also known as rotis).

It’s a Mauritian specialty resembling an Indian naan, stuffed with various curries and sauces. You’ll find them all over the island, but if you ask me, the best ones are at Flic-en-Flac. A must-try!

For the second part of the day, there’s an amazing national park just 15 km away: Black River Gorges National Park .

A massive nature reserve within the tropical forest , you’ll discover the island’s wide variety of fauna and flora (home to more than 300 species of plants and 9 species of endemic birds !).

On the agenda: waterfalls, river crossings, and numerous viewpoints overlooking the coast and the ocean.

The park is quite sprawling and it’s not easy for first-timers to navigate without missing anything. For this reason, I suggest booking this guided tour to enjoy the best experience possible.

  • Lariad BnB : A welcoming residence conveniently located just a 5-minute walk from Flic-en-Flac beach. Enjoy a comfortable double room from 50€ a night, breakfast included. The residence features a lovely outdoor space with a tropical garden, 2 swimming pools, and a terrace where breakfast is served. The ideal choice for an economical stay in Mauritius!
  • Shanti Ghar Guest House : Settle into this beautifully decorated guest house, conveniently located less than 2km from Black River Tamarin beach. Free access to the outdoor swimming pool, shared lounge, garden, and bar. All the comfort of a double room with a balcony starting at 95€/night .
  • La Mariposa Mauritius : This hotel is situated on the coast in Black River in a peaceful environment, just 10km from Chamarel and the Seven Coloured Earths. Stunning view of the Morne mountain. A double room starts from 120€/night, breakfast included. The hotel has its own private beach, a pool, and a beautiful garden.
  • Veranda Tamarin Hotel & Spa : A lovely small hotel in Tamarin Bay. Double room with a balcony overlooking the sea or the mountain for around 150€ a night . The hotel includes 2 restaurants, 2 pools, and a spa. Attentive staff. A great choice for an affordable luxury stay in Mauritius!
  • Sugar Beach A Sun Resort : A magnificent hotel set on Flic-en-Flac beach. For a minimum of 390€/night , you stay in small, independent luxury villas with a direct ocean view. The ultimate choice for a luxurious stay on the west coast of Mauritius.

Black River Gorges National Park

That’s a full day indeed! If you still have some energy left after all that climbing in the park, why not spend the evening in Flic-en-Flac ?

The vibrant seaside resort is packed with trendy restaurants and nightclubs .

Time for a bit more nature walking!

Trekking in the Black River Gorges National Park was just a taste of what’s to come the following day: a great hike at Morne Brabant .

There’s nothing like it to recharge and immerse yourself in the Mauritian natural heritage !

Located in the southwest, it’s the most famous mountain on the island , and for good reason! It has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2008.

Climbing Morne Brabant is by far my favorite hike to do in Mauritius . Count on approximately 3 to 4 hours to reach the summit and come back down.

The trails can be quite steep at times, and towards the end, you’re pretty close to climbing. The hike remains very pleasant, but be cautious if you suffer from vertigo.

For maximum safety and especially to learn everything about the history of the region, it’s a good idea to hire a professional guide who will accompany you during the climb.

I actually have one I can recommend! You just need to click below to book your guided tour of Morne Brabant (it’s very popular, so I recommend you book without delay ):

The panorama at the top of the mountain is a breathtaking reward, literally taking your breath away.

Morne Brabant

It’s important to know that Morne Brabant holds high historical and emotional value .

The stone cross erected at the very top of the mountain was installed in tribute to the slaves who, back then, jumped from the summit to escape their captors.

At the foot of the mountain, there is also a commemorative monument called “The Unknown Slave.”

Once back on solid ground, treat yourself to a few well-deserved hours of relaxation on Le Morne Beach .

Located at the foot of the mountain , it’s another heavenly beach to add to your vacation diary.

This one is wilder and quieter than the ones in the north or Flic-en-Flac.

A peaceful moment of tranquility away from it all, in communion with the ocean and with a spectacular landscape as a bonus.

Then head back to your hotel for the night.

Plage Morne Brabant Maurice

Get ready for the 6th and penultimate day of your vacation!

I suggest you continue exploring the southwest of Mauritius , an exceptionally rich region.

And what better than a little road trip to tour it all in one day?

Having explored this part of the island by car, I am offering you my optimized itinerary so you won’t miss out on anything:

1) Start early in the morning heading towards Grand Bassin (also known as “ Ganga Talao ”).

It’s a very important cultural site in the country. Indeed, this sacred lake is a pilgrimage site for the Hindu Mauritians.

It’s always an experience to be there, especially at the sight of the two enormous statues of the gods Shiva and Durga , which are very impressive and stand at the entrance of the site.

Fun fact: the statue of Durga is the tallest statue of the goddess in the world !

At Grand Bassin, you can visit several temples , have a “tika” put on your forehead, and even mingle with the little wild monkeys that add to the charm of the site.

(Just be careful, some of them are quite cheeky, so keep an eye on your belongings! 😀 )

Grand Bassin Mauritius

2) For the second stage, head to the south to find yourself in a place called Plaine Champagne .

This is where the locals come to pick Chinese guavas at the end of the year, these delicious little wild fruits with a sweet-sour taste. If you’re visiting during the guava season, you can even pick them yourself by stopping on the side of the road.

A bit further along the main road, you’ll find Alexandra Falls , which is definitely worth a stop!

3) By midday or early afternoon, make your way to the Seven Coloured Earths of Chamarel .

It’s THE natural wonder of the island, wildly popular with visitors. It’s an area covered with multicolored volcanic soil, hence its charming name.

The site is located within a private estate, so there’s an entrance fee. But if you’re staying in Mauritius for a week, it’s an absolute must-see .

Chamarel Seven Coloured Earths Mauritius

4) On the same private estate, you’ll also find the Ebony Forest Reserve , which I highly recommend as well. This is a roughly 2-hour walk in an indigenous forest that offers a fantastic panorama of the valley from Sublime Point .

5) And for the final stage of your road trip, why not visit the Chamarel Rhumerie , where you can enjoy a guided tour before sampling various spirits.

Believe me, this will be the best rum you’ll ever taste!

To ensure that this day of sightseeing flows smoothly and fits into your schedule, I advise you once again to go with a guide.

The guided tour is incredibly well-organized and spares you the worry of navigating the roads.

You can book it with a simple click of the button below:

Chamarel Waterfall Mauritius

If you have the time, I strongly recommend a visit to “Curious Corner” of Chamarel .

It’s a small museum dedicated to optical illusions , and it’s really well put together!

You’ll find it just beside the entrance to the Seven Coloured Earths.

I’ve been there several times and I love it!

If you’re with kids, it’s a family activity in Mauritius not to be missed .

The Southwest is one of the most touristic regions on the island, and accommodations tend to fill up quickly. If you already have your travel dates, you should book now .

Here is my selection of the best hotels in the region:

  • Résidence au Bout du Morne : a family-run guesthouse by the sea, 1km from La Prairie beach. Spacious, modern, and well-decorated rooms with a large double bed and a balcony. The hosts are very welcoming and attentive. Expect to pay about 54€/night for 2 people, with an optional delicious and hearty breakfast for 10€. Perfect for an affordable stay at Morne Brabant!
  • Pingo Studio : modern, comfortable, and beautifully decorated independent studios, 5km from Le Morne beach. Each studio has a well-equipped kitchenette and bathroom. Starting at 72€ per night for 2 people.
  • La Vieille Cheminée : absolute comfort in the heart of nature: this exceptional establishment located in Chamarel at the edge of an endemic forest, with a mountain view, offers just that. You’ll be accommodated in an independent chalet with a double room, bathroom, and equipped kitchen for 125€/night, delicious breakfast included. My favorite in the southwest of Mauritius!
  • LUX Le Morne Resort : One of the most beautiful and largest hotels in the Southwest, at the foot of Le Morne mountain. Spacious and tastefully decorated double rooms starting at 295€ per night. The hotel features several pools, restaurants, and a spa. Direct access to the stunning Le Morne beach.
  • Hotel Chalets Chamarel : stunning hotel in the heights of Chamarel village, with breathtaking views of the mountain and Le Morne coast. Independent, ultra-comfortable little lodges available starting at 340€ per night, breakfast and dinner included. The meals are homemade with fresh, local products. The top choice for a luxury-nature stay in the south of Mauritius!
  • Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa : the pinnacle of luxury hotels, located on Le Morne beach. Breathtaking views of the ocean and the mountain. You’ll stay in a spacious, modern suite with refined decór for about 473€. The perfect choice for a luxury stay in Mauritius!

Step 4: The Southeast Coast (1 day)

Here we are… It went by so fast, you saw so much, yet it feels like you arrived just yesterday.

That’s the problem with dream vacations !

So, there’s no other choice but to wrap up your 7 days in Mauritius beautifully!

For this final day, I recommend two places to visit: Mahébourg and Blue Bay .

We’re heading to the Southeast coast this time.

Mahébourg was the very first city built on the island by the Dutch colonists.

I believe every Mauritian will tell you: Mahébourg is the city you absolutely must not miss during a week-long stay in Mauritius.

It has a very different atmosphere from the rest of the island , more unique, somewhat timeless. It’s truly a great place to feel transported and surrounded by Mauritian culture .

I myself sometimes go there when I need to recharge and get away from everyday life. It’s very pleasant, and time seems to slow down.

Take a moment to sit on the waterfront , which is genuinely worth seeing.

Afterward, you can stroll through the cobbled streets to admire the old Creole houses and soak up the very “roots” vibe of this town.

Then, head out to Blue Bay , the neighboring village.

The beaches there are stunning, especially Pointe d’Esny . It’s personally my favorite beach on the entire island.

The most incredible thing about spending a 7-day vacation in Mauritius is that no matter how many beaches you visit, each one manages to take your breath away every time!

Blue Bay’s lagoon , crystal clear and rich in colorful fish, is particularly well-suited for snorkeling .

You can engage in this activity on your own or be accompanied to the best spots.

This glass-bottom boat excursion with several snorkeling stops is really cool and even includes meals and drinks.

To book your Blue Bay boat trip, click below:

  • Le Jardin de Beauvallon : A charming small hotel located 10 minutes from the airport, in Mahébourg. Individual bungalows for two persons starting from 61€ per night. Access to an outdoor pool and tropical garden. The hotel also features a restaurant. I recommend it for affordable and comfortable holidays in Mauritius!
  • La Peninsula Bay Beach Resort & Spa : Only 200m from Blue Bay Beach and 1km from Pointe d’Esny Beach. A beautiful hotel with family rooms (1 double bed and 2 single beds) starting from 160€ per night. Private beach, water activities, and a paradisiacal setting.
  • Preskil Island Resort : A 4-star hotel set in front of Mahébourg lagoon, with a view of Île aux Aigrettes. Stay in a superb double room with sea views starting from 170€ . Take advantage of the 2 pools, spa, and activities and excursions included in the room price.
  • Ferney Nature Lodge : Located 10km from the airport, stay in an eco-lodge in the heart of the beautiful Ferney Valley. The suites are beautifully decorated, ultra-comfortable, including a sleeping area with double bed, a private bathroom, and a terrace. Prices start from 295€ per night. Outdoor swimming pool and restaurant with a sublime view of the valley. A big favorite for me!

Blue Bay Mahébourg Mauritius

It’s now time to return to your hotel to catch your return flight the next day.

I hope that this 1-week itinerary in Mauritius along with my tips will make your trip unforgettable and will inspire you to come back.

Feel free to share your impressions in the comments!

Have a good flight!

Many travelers mistakenly believe that healthcare in Mauritius is affordable and that they don’t need travel insurance. But in reality, the public healthcare system is fragile, and even a simple consultation at a private clinic can be very expensive !

That’s why it is essential to take out travel insurance with good medical coverage before your trip.

To ensure your safety , I recommend the following two insurance options ( both include epidemic coverage – such as for Covid-19 -, which is very important!)

To sign up, it’s very simple, just click on the links below :

  • ACS AMI Globe Partner : Medical insurance and repatriation
  • Assur Travel Summum : Premium insurance (medical, repatriation, baggage theft, flight delay, cancellation, and more!)

Out of Your Comfort Zone

The art of backpacking & adventures to get out of your comfort zone – tips and advice, the best 1-day mauritius roadtrip itinerary (perfect for cruisers).

Last Updated on February 23, 2024 by Talita

Visiting Mauritius for just 1 or 2 days on a cruise? Want to make the most of your time and see as much of the island nation’s beautiful nature & unique culture as you can? Then read on for the best 1-day Mauritius itinerary by car. No expensive private taxis or overpriced ship excursions needed!

Mauritius is, in a word, lovely.

This small island nation – located east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean –  has several claims to fame. It’s home to world-class beaches and a rich cultural heritage, Africa’s highest GDP per capita, and the famous dodo bird – a large, flightless bird that went extinct in the 1700s (which they continue to put on everything – their coat of arms included!).

The Best 1-Day Mauritius Roadtrip Itinerary (Perfect for Cruisers!)

While there’s enough to do on the island that you could easily explore for a week or more…

If you’re visiting on a cruise like we did, then you might not have a lot of time to work with. In our case, we had an overnight in Mauritius, giving us just two (almost) full days to explore.

For our first day, we rented a car (which is something we’ll talk a bit more about below). And for the second, we did some diving/snorkeling. For this article today, we’ll be walking through the highlights we visited and would recommend on that first day.

So if you also find yourself with limited time in Mauritius (or you only plan to rent a car for a day or two during your longer stay), then read on for the best 1-day Mauritius itinerary.

But first…

How to get around Mauritius

As with many other destinations we visit, we chose to rent a car in Mauritius as we believed it would give us the flexibility to visit all the places we wanted to.

(Side note: if you’re looking for other “by car” itineraries, you can find some of our best ones here: Guam , Tunisia , Cyprus , and Armenia .)

Although public transportation is fairly decent around the capital Port Louis and in between major cities, it won’t take you to many of the more isolated natural attractions in this itinerary (or if it does, the length of time to get there and back would probably make you miss your ship!).

As a final option: if you’re not interested in renting a car, you could also consider hiring a private taxi or a driver and then using this itinerary as inspiration to direct them where you want to go.

How to rent a car in Mauritius

Thankfully, renting a car in Mauritius is easy!

To compare prices and see your options, we recommend taking a look at our article on the 5 best and cheapest rental car companies here .

When you book your car, be sure to let the company know that you’ll be arriving by cruise. In most cases, they’ll come directly to the cruise port in Port Louis to pick you up and bring you to your car for free.

How is the driving in Mauritius?

Compared to many other islands we’ve rented cars on, driving in Mauritius is a piece of cake. (Though do be aware that they drive on the *left* side of the road in case that’s not something you’re used to!)

The drivers might be a little on the aggressive side, but overall roads are well-maintained and easy to navigate.

The Best 1-Day Mauritius Roadtrip Itinerary (Perfect for Cruisers!)

Maconde Viewpoint, Mauritius

IMPORTANT TIP: traffic getting back into Port Louis can get pretty bad at the end of the day. So if you have a cruise ship to catch, make sure you return back to the city with lots of extra time to spare.

(Though if you have an overnight stay in Mauritius like we did, then you won’t have to worry about this!)

How to spend 1 day in Mauritius

(AKA the best 1-day south Mauritius itinerary by car!)

For the purposes of this itinerary, we focused our time on the south side of Mauritius.

We saw a bit of the north the following day when we went diving. But since the north is primarily just beaches, we definitely felt south Mauritius was more impressive.

The island is large enough that you won’t be able to drive the whole thing in a day. So if you have limited time, then we’d recommend you also focus on the south like we did.

And before we dive in, here’s a map of the 1-day Mauritius itinerary I’ll be walking you through (you can click the map, or here , to zoom in):

1 day in Mauritius itinerary stop #1:

Port Louis (AKA Mauritius’s bustling capital city )

For most people, their adventure in Mauritius will begin in Port Louis, the country’s bustling capital city.

If your cruise ship is arriving and leaving in the same day, then I’d recommend doing your far-away explorations first and then saving Port Louis for the end of the day.

The Best 1-Day Mauritius Roadtrip Itinerary (Perfect for Cruisers!)

Port Louis from a distance

Note: If you’re coming by plane and plan to rent a car straight from the airport, then you’ll actually already be on the south side of the island. In which case, you may want to consider reversing this itinerary to finish up your day in Port Louis.

HOW TO GET TO PORT LOUIS CENTER FROM THE CRUISE TERMINAL

If you’re coming to Mauritius by cruise, your ship will stop a mere 20 minute walk to the city center.

Here’s a map of what the walk looks like:

The Best 1-Day Mauritius Roadtrip Itinerary (Perfect for Cruisers!)

But as I mentioned above, if you rent a car , most rental car companies will pick you up for free from the cruise port.

WHAT TO DO IN PORT LOUIS, MAURITIUS

Here’s a quick list of some of the top attractions & things to do in Port Louis:

  • Visit any one of the city’s vibrantly-painted Hindu templates
  • Admire the view of the harbor as you wander along the Caudan Waterfront
  • Explore the 19th-century Fort Adelaide Citadel (highly recommend this one – very cool views from the hill even if you don’t enter the fort!)
  • Visit the Aapravasi Ghat: a UNESCO World Heritage Site that served as Mauritius’s first immigration depot
  • Wander through the lively central market

1 day in Mauritius itinerary stop #2:

Le Morne Beach & Le Morne Brabant Hiking Trail (AKA one of Mauritius’s best hiking trails!)

Of all of our stops in Mauritius, this one was probably my favorite.

Even if you’re not into hiking, I still recommend making the drive for the views.

The Best 1-Day Mauritius Roadtrip Itinerary (Perfect for Cruisers!)

Le Morne Brabant (and one of the best bays for windsurfing/kitesurfing in the country!)

The hike in question starts at the base of Le Morne Branant, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of the island’s resistance to slavery.

The trail then winds its way up the mountain, passing through rocky terrain, dense vegetation, and breaktaking island views.

Le Morne Brabant (and one of the best bays for windsurfing/kitesurfing in the country!)

Trailhead to Le Morne Brabant, Mauritius

It’s an out-and-back hike, and there’s just one trail so you really can’t get lost. But depending on how much time you have, there are a few different turnaround points you can choose from.

OPTION 1: Hike just far enough that the trees open up, offering up a beautiful view of the island’s southern lagoon.

Expect to spend at least 30-40 minutes roundtrip if you want to get any kind of view.

Le Morne Brabant (and one of the best bays for windsurfing/kitesurfing in the country!)

View of Mauritius’s south lagoon from the Le Morne Brabant hiking trail

OPTION 2: End your hike at the base of the rock, where you’ll be rewarded with nearly 360-degree views of the turquoise water, coral reefs, and lush mountainous surroundings.

This was the option we went with, and I’d highly recommend it.

Unfortunately, I forgot to measure exactly how long it took us. But to be safe, I’d probably plan for 90 minutes to 2.5 hours depending on how fast you hike.

You’ll know you’ve arrived when you see a wooden pavilion and an entrance gate with a fence that leads up to the rock face itself.

The Best 1-Day Mauritius Roadtrip Itinerary (Perfect for Cruisers!)

View from partway up the Le Morne Brabant trail, Mauritius

OPTION 3: Climb all the way to the top of the rock. (Note: it sounds like this one requires a bit of rock scrambling and is not safe to do if there’s been recent rain, so proceed with caution.)

Set aside 3-4 hours if you plan to make this climb. Though honestly, if you have a cruise ship to get back to, we probably wouldn’t risk it!

IMPORTANT: HOW TO GET TO THE LE MORNE BRABANT TRAILHEAD

For some reason, the gravel road hugging the coast that brings you to the Le Morne trailhead doesn’t show up in Google Maps. Instead, Google Maps will tell you this road doesn’t exist and have you backtrack instead.

In the map below, I’ve highlighted the missing road in yellow so you know where you can keep driving. Basically, just keep driving past Le Morne Public Beach.

The Best 1-Day Mauritius Roadtrip Itinerary (Perfect for Cruisers!)

You’ll know you’ve arrived at the trailhead when you see a gravel parking lot on your right and a sign welcoming you to the Le Morne Brabant trail on your left.

The Best 1-Day Mauritius Roadtrip Itinerary (Perfect for Cruisers!)

1 day in Mauritius itinerary stop #3:

Maconde Viewpoint

Set on the curve of a sharp hairpin turn on the edge of the coast, you’ll find one of Mauritius’s most famous viewpoints: Maconde Viewpoint.

Make sure to take the time to pull over, make your way up the short flight of stairs (I promise there aren’t many!), and enjoy the scenery.

The Best 1-Day Mauritius Roadtrip Itinerary (Perfect for Cruisers!)

Featuring Le Morne Brabant – which you may have just climbed! – from a distance

1 day in Mauritius itinerary stop #4:

Chamarel Seven Earth Geopark & Waterfall (full disclosure: if we were to do this itinerary again, we’d probably skip this stop)

Although this is one of Mauritius’s most popular attractions, we personally weren’t that impressed. If we had the choice to do it again, we’d probably skip it to make more time for our other stops.

While the “seven colored” dunes were interesting enough, they were quite small (and also totally packed with tourists and lines – not something we’d seen anywhere else in Mauritius!).

The Best 1-Day Mauritius Roadtrip Itinerary (Perfect for Cruisers!)

Chamarel Seven Coloured Earth

If you’ve ever had the opportunity to see the American badlands in either North or South Dakota (which are both amazing, by the way!), then you probably won’t find this one so interesting either.

Of course, it’s up to you. And whether or not you choose to stop here, you’ll still have to drive by the entrance to get to your next destination.

1 day in Mauritius itinerary stop #5:

Black River Gorges National Park (the “gorges” viewpoint)

This gorgeous, green-as-far-as-the-eye-can-see viewpoint is one you won’t want to miss!

Just be careful if you’re walking around with any food on you as the local monkey residents are a little aggressive.

(Note: you can find this stop directly on Google Maps by typing in “gorges viewpoint.”)

The Best 1-Day Mauritius Roadtrip Itinerary (Perfect for Cruisers!)

The “Gorges Viewpoint,” Black River Gorges National Park, Mauritius

1 day in Mauritius itinerary stop #6:

Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao) Hindu Temple Complex

Given that nearly half of Mauritius’s inhabitants are Hindu – as descendants of the Indian laborers that were brought over in the 19th century to work on sugarcane plantations – the country is rich in beautiful Hindu sites.

And the Grand Bassin temple complex may be one of the most beautiful of all with its numerous temples, shrines, and the second-largest Lord Shiva statue in the world (check it out emerging from the mist in the pic below!).

The Best 1-Day Mauritius Roadtrip Itinerary (Perfect for Cruisers!)

Ganga Talao Temple Complex, Mauritius

Please note: this is a sacred Hindu pilgrimage site and active place of worship, so do dress respectfully. (I simply wrapped a skirt around my waist to cover my knees.)

1 day in Mauritius itinerary stop #7:

Gris Gris Beach and Cliffs

Gris Gris’s rugged coastline, rocky cliffs, and wild waves make it the perfect place to finish off your day in Mauritius.

Due to the waves and the current, swimming isn’t recommended. But watching the sunset here is still a pretty magical experience!

The Best 1-Day Mauritius Roadtrip Itinerary (Perfect for Cruisers!)

Gris Gris Beach at dusk, Mauritius

If you have the time before it gets too dark, be sure to walk a bit through the forest park to observe some of the area’s unique rock formations up close.

And there you have it, folks!

As you can see by this quick little itinerary, whether you’re looking for nature, culture, adventure, or relaxation…you’re sure to find a bit of everything in beautiful Mauritius!

But now, let us know. What do you think of the itinerary? Any questions we can answer for you? Or if you’ve been to Mauritius before, anything you’d add?

Things to do

Where to eat, where to stay in mauritius.

The easiest way to choose accommodation in Mauritius is to divide the island into four areas and match your interests and expectations with the best stretch of coastline. What they have in common is a wide choice of excellent hotels (all with swimming pools) that will satisfy every need – whether you want to pamper yourself or are looking for budget-friendly options.

Read travel guide

The North of Mauritius

The beaches in the north of the island are located around the popular town of Grand Baie, which is a good choice if you’re visiting Mauritius for the first time. You can choose to stay in Grand Baie itself or La Cuvette, Pereybere, Bain Boeuf or Mont Choisy (Mont Choisy beach is gorgeous), all within a few minutes’ drive of each other.

The East of Mauritius

The east coast of Mauritius is known for its luxurious hotels and stunning Belle Mare region. If you’re looking for a golfing getaway, the Post de Flacq peninsula at the northern end of Belle Mare is the perfect spot thanks to Ile Aux Cerfs Golf Club. To the peninsula’s south is Beau Champ, where you can enjoy water sports.

Southern Mauritius

The southern coast is for people who want to escape the crowds and enjoy true tranquillity. The towering cliffs make for a wonderfully dramatic backdrop − but they also help to create some great waves, making it ideal for surfing.

Mauritius_Destination

Always, always pack an international travel adapter plug and more than one! You could find one while overseas, but they can be quite expensive and may not be compatible with your devices. Also, never travel without a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated.

1 week in Mauritius: Epic 7-8 Day Itinerary (First Time Visit)

One week in mauritius: which itinerary for 6, 7 or 8 days.

You’re planning a 1 week trip to Mauritius and you’re looking for the best Itinerary?

You’re at the right place!

In order to help you plan your stay , I have prepared this recommended Itinerary for a week in Mauritius . You will discover some of the best places to visit in the country!

During your 6, 7 or 8 days itinerary in Mauritius, you will experience the idyllic beaches of Belle Mare and Morne Brabant , the lively streets of Flic-en-Flac and Grand Baie , the Black River Gorges National Park … And a lot more

For this itinerary, in addition to the best things to do and must-see attractions , I will also give you all my best tips as well as my list of the best accommodations depending on your budget.

So, what are the best things to do in Mauritius in a week? Where to stay?

Let’s find out!

1) The North (1 day)

2) port louis (1 day), 3) pamplemousses (½ day), 4) flic en flac (½ day), 5) grand bassin (½ day), 6) eureka creole house (½ day), 7) tamarin and the black river gorges national park (1 day), 8) le morne brabant and chamarel (1 day), 9) east coast (1 day), where to stay in the north of mauritius, where to stay in the south of mauritius, a week in mauritius: your itinerary map, renting a boat in mauritius, you’re traveling in mauritius these articles will help you.

Let’s kick off your Mauritian holiday in the northern part of the island .

You’ll land bright and early in the south, at Mahébourg, then swiftly make your way to your hotel or guesthouse, regardless of its location. Once you’ve dropped off your bags and freshened up, I’d suggest heading straight to Grand Baie up north .

A quick tip before we dive in : touring Mauritius by car is super handy for zipping from one place to another. I’d recommend it. You can rent cars from airport agencies (just a heads up, always go for official rental agencies over individual renters, you know, insurance and all in case of mishaps).

Your best bet to get a good deal and the car you want is through a comparison site. My top pick? Booking.com Cars – I swear by it!

But hey, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can rely on the bus network . It’s pretty extensive, although journey times can stretch a bit.

Start your Mauritian adventure with an excursion to Grand Baie , in the northwest. It’s a tourist hotspot and one of the island’s liveliest areas – a must-visit for sure!

Here, you’ll discover the gorgeous public beach with colorful fishing boats bobbing on the turquoise ocean waters. Several stalls along the beach offer snacks and fresh fruits . Enjoy them as you stroll along Sunset Boulevard (Grand Baie’s shopping street) or while lounging on the beach.

When hunger strikes , try out the new restaurant “Eatwithfingers”. Their dishes are delish and healthy (not your typical Mauritian fare, though). It’s a bit outside the town center on Vingt Pieds Road . You might need to grab a taxi.

After Grand Baie, I’d suggest chilling for a few hours and taking a dip at Pereybere beach , just 10 km away.

By late afternoon, head over to Cap Malheureux , right up north. The breathtaking landscape there is worth the trip. Catch the sunset on the beautiful beach with its distinctive red church . The vibrant colors of the church set against the greenery, blue sea, and sky is an unforgettable sight. One of my all-time fav spots in Mauritius.

Cap Malheureux

Next up on our week-long Mauritius journey is a tour of the capital, Port Louis .

Beyond the postcard-perfect beaches, hotels, and scenic beauty Mauritius is famous for, Port Louis buzzes with activity . It’s a window into the daily lives of the locals and their rich culture. A genuine dive into Mauritian life.

Kick start your morning with a visit to the central market of Port Louis , locally known as the “bazar”. It’s a city highlight.

To get there, just follow the crowd from the central bus terminal. The market sits on Queen Street (and if you get lost, just ask. Locals are super friendly and always ready to guide wandering tourists).

The sprawling market boasts stalls brimming with fruits and veggies , and other fresh goodies like “mines” (Chinese noodles). You’ll also find a section with ready-to-eat dishes and snacks (think sandwiches, fried noodles, fried rice, dhall puri, rotis…). There’s even an upstairs area where you can settle in for a bite.

To truly savor the culinary delights of Mauritius, consider booking a street food guided tour in Port Louis.

Lasting 3 hours , it allows you to visit the market and of course taste local cuisine . You’ll find all the details about this outing by clicking here:

Post-market, head over to Caudan Waterfront , a seafront mall, the shopping hub of Port Louis . It’s a short walk from the market.

Sauntering around Caudan in the afternoon feels like you’re in a quaint village with pretty lanes, shops, restaurants , street vendors, and beautiful ocean views .

Also, don’t miss out on the Blue Penny Museum located in Caudan. It chronicles the island’s history and culture.

In the evening, enjoy a seaside dinner , tap your feet to the live music (especially if you’re around on a Friday or Saturday), and maybe try your luck at the casino.

Driving around? It’s a smart move to park at Caudan’s parking early in the morning and explore the city on foot. Finding a parking spot in Port Louis can be a real pain, and everything’s walkable from Caudan. Plus, parking’s free after 4 pm on weekdays and all day during weekends.

Traffic alert! Avoid Port Louis between 8-9:30 am and 4-5:30 pm on weekdays. Gridlocks are common as everyone’s heading to or leaving work.

Port Louis Umbrella Alley

For the third leg of your 6, 7, or 8-day Mauritius adventure, head to the central-north part of the island to check out the Pamplemousses Botanic Garden , an absolute must-do. Getting there’s a breeze, especially by bus from, let’s say, Port Louis. The bus drops you right near the entrance.

You can cover the garden in half a day . Why not pack a picnic and lunch amidst the greenery, on a bench or at a waterside pavilion?

The garden, a brainchild of a French botanist from the 18th century, boasts a vast collection of local plants , and some that have traveled from all around the world.

Spanning 37 hectares , it’s a treat to stroll through. The pathways are well-laid and lead you to marvels like massive baobabs , giant lily pads, and an array of palm varieties. You’ll also come across aromatic plants, tropical fruit trees, and more.

If you’re keen to dig deeper into the garden’s offerings, I’d suggest hiring a guide . But if a leisurely walk amidst the flora is all you seek, go at it solo.

The guides? They’re a friendly lot and will flood you with facts about each plant, the history, and whatnot. But heads up, their chats can stretch a bit, usually between 1 to 2 hours .

Entrance fees : 8 euros for adults and 5 for kids.

Pamplemousses garden Mauritius

Post your green escapade at the Pamplemousses Garden, let’s hop onto the fourth step of your week-long Mauritius jaunt.

Next stop? Flic en Flac on the island’s west coast. It’s the liveliest tourist spot in the western region. Here, you can revel in a gorgeous beach with views of the Le Morne Brabant mountain, indulge in watersports, or dine and dance by the seaside.

Here’s your afternoon playbook:

  • Soak up the sun on the white sands or under the filaos trees.
  • Swim and snorkel to witness the rich marine life close to the shore.
  • Treat your taste buds with snacks or fresh fruits from the beachside vendors. Pro tip: Don’t miss the scrumptious “Roti Aka” at the start of the beach.
  • Dive deep with one of the town’s diving clubs (booking ahead always helps).
  • Dine at a beachside restaurant.
  • And maybe hit the dance floor later?

Flic en Flac Beach

As you kick off your fourth day in Mauritius , I recommend a trip to Grand Bassin , also known as Ganga Talao.

This sacred spot houses several Hindu temples, a peaceful stroll by the natural lake, and gigantic statues of gods Shiva and Durga . Fun fact? Durga’s statue here stands as the world’s tallest depiction of a female deity!

Grand Bassin is a pilgrimage destination for the island’s Hindu community, especially during the Maha Shivaratree festival .

You can leisurely explore Grand Bassin in half a day . And guess what? Entrance is free ! Visit temples, get a “tika” (a religious mark) drawn on your forehead if you fancy, and soak in the nature and numerous religious statues around the lake.

Keep an eye out for playful monkeys and guard your belongings—they can be cheeky!

Grand Bassin, Mauritius

After your morning trip to Grand Bassin, reserve your afternoon for exploring one of the last grand colonial Creole homes on Mauritius: Eureka House , nestled near Moka in the heart of the island.

This stately colonial home was built in 1830 and transformed into a museum in 1986. Once the domain of French and British aristocrats ruling the island, today it offers a tantalizing trip back to the colonial life of the 19th century .

Here’s what your visit to this must-see attraction includes:

  • Exploring the colonial lifestyle through numerous rooms restored and furnished with period pieces.
  • Lunching or dining on typical Mauritian dishes in the restaurant.
  • Checking out the museum dedicated to music, art, and period antiques.
  • Meandering through the quaint English gardens.
  • Strolling amidst lush vegetation surrounding the house.
  • Walking alongside the Moka River to the waterfalls, and capping the day with a refreshing dip .

Maison Eureka

For the seventh leg of your one-week Mauritius adventure, let’s head southwest to the area around Tamarin . Situated right next to Flic-en-Flac, it’s a breeze to get there by bus – pretty straightforward.

The vacation has been all chill with relaxation and sightseeing, but now it’s time to flex those muscles! I suggest spending your morning hiking in the Black River Gorges National Park near Tamarin.

Being the island’s largest, sprawling over 6,754 hectares, it offers an enchanting journey through tropical forests . Prepare to be wowed by breathtaking landscapes, rippling rivers, cascading waterfalls , and a rich array of flora and fauna.

I’d advise you to hire a guide for your trek. Not only will they keep you from getting lost, but they’ll also share the park’s history and introduce you to local plants and endemic animals (like the famed Pink Pigeon).

This guided trek will fill up your morning .

Make sure you book in advance by clicking the following button:

If you’re more of a solo wanderer, remember to mark your route and choose your trails beforehand – there’s a myriad to pick from.

After a nature picnic in the park as a treat for all your hard work, I’d then guide you to Tamarin Beach , just a few kilometers away.

Local guides offer sea excursions to witness marine life . It’s wise to book in advance with a local travel agency or your hotel, but spontaneous adventurers can find on-the-spot offers too.

Savor the boat ride, and if luck’s on your side, spotting some dolphins can be a magical bonus!

Black River Gorges National Park

Wow, it’s already day 6 of the holiday and time for step 7 on our Mauritian journey. This time, I recommend exploring the wonders of the country’s southern coast .

To the southwest, you’ll find Le Morne Brabant mountain , steeped in history and emotion, and a proud UNESCO World Heritage site . Tragically, it once sheltered runaway slaves, some of whom leapt from its peak seeking freedom…

At the mountain’s base, opposite Le Morne Beach, stands a touching tribute: a memorial called “The Unknown Slave” . It portrays an enslaved face carved into stone, accompanied by a hand, a leg, and several curled-up figures.

I’d suggest dedicating your morning to ascend Le Morne Brabant . The hike, guided or not, lets you immerse in nature, unveils spectacular landscapes, and offers stunning views of the coastlines and azure ocean . As always in Mauritius, expect a rich tapestry of flora and fauna.

The ascent, especially in its final stages , is no joke. If you have vertigo, or you’re a senior or with kids, I’d advise against scaling the very peak. Some parts are basically rock-climbing!

However, the view from the top is jaw-dropping . You get a panoramic look at Mauritius’ southern coast and the vast Indian Ocean. Trust me, it’s an unforgettable sight.

The hike spans roughly 6 km and should take you 3-4 hours.

Le Morne Brabant Mountain

After all that action, I suggest you spend an hour or two at the breathtaking Morne beach , truly a slice of paradise and so serene. But hey, maybe skip Sundays, since that’s when the local Mauritian families hit the beach for a picnic and to spend their day.

Once you’ve caught your breath, head on over to the Chamarel site, just a few minutes away by bus or taxi from the beach. Here’s where you’ll be awed by one of Mauritius’ main natural wonders: the Seven Colored Earths .

Admission isn’t free, so make sore to book your tickets in advance by clicking here . Once inside, follow the path leading to Chamarel’s waterfall – and hey, if you’re feeling it, dive in for a swim!

Continue your journey and soon you’ll stand before a wide clearing filled with ochre dunes with colors ranging from reddish-orange to violet. It creates this amazing gradient that’s a sight for sore eyes.

Just a heads-up, it’s forbidden to walk on these dunes or collect samples. Gotta preserve the beauty, right? You’ll likely wrap up your Chamarel visit in 1 to 1.5 hours.

To cap off the day, consider a visit to Chamarel’s rum distillery or, like I did and absolutely loved, visit the “Curious Corner” of Chamarel. It’s a museum of optical illusions right next to Chamarel’s entrance. The tour takes 1h to 1h30 and is really funny, playful and surprising.

I promise you, whether you’re 5 or 55, it’s an hour or so of pure, delightful confusion. But note, the Curious Corner closes at 5 PM and entry costs 10 euros for adults and 6 euros for kids aged 3 to 12.

Chamarel and the seven Coloured Earths

For this seventh and final day in Mauritius, set your sights on the eastern coast . This coast boasts some of the country’s most gorgeous beaches, like Belle Mare and Trou d’Eau Douce .

In the morning, make your way to Trou d’Eau Douce . From its (gorgeous) beach, you can hop on a boat to Île aux Cerfs , a tourist favorite in Mauritius.

Imagine a tiny paradise island in the middle of the Indian Ocean, with white sandy beaches and clear waters . Spend a full or half day there, chilling, swimming, or trying out some water sports.

The island also hosts several shops and restaurants.

Though not exactly a deserted island, Île aux Cerfs is tailored for tourists. I was slightly bummed to find that apart from the beaches, it’s quite commercialized. But if you’re looking to chill for a morning or a full day , it’s pretty much postcard perfect.

To book your excursion , it’s as easy as clicking the following button:

  • Cruise to Ile aux Cerfs from Trou d’Eau Douce:

In the afternoon, continue your east coast tour by enjoying the stunning Belle Mare beach. You can indulge in snorkeling, diving, or other water sports. If you’d rather just kick back and enjoy the beach, that’s awesome too!

Belle Mare beach, one of the island’s finest, stretches over 10 km. It’s peaceful during weekdays but gets buzzing on weekends.

After a week-long road trip around Mauritius, it’s time to hop on a plane back home. I hope you love this 7-8 day itinerary as much as I did! One thing’s for sure: it’ll be unforgettable. If you have questions about your Mauritius trip, drop them in the comments below.

Where to stay in Mauritius

Like I mentioned earlier, the island’s small, so you can stay in the same hotel throughout your stay .

To cut down on travel, maybe start in a northern hotel and then switch to a southern one.

Major tip : Book your accommodation ASAP. Good deals vanish overnight!

  • Résidence Obleue : Situated in Peyrebere. Brand-new, modern, and bright apartment with a fully equipped kitchen from €50 a night. Strong points: The location, free private parking, the pool, and the rooftop. The top choice in the north for an affordable stay in Mauritius!
  • Bleu de toi Boutique Guesthouse : Located a mere 5-minute walk from Peyrebere beach. Warm and nicely decorated double rooms from €75 a night. Strong points: The pool, the outdoor areas, the peaceful atmosphere, the top-notch staff!
  • Corail Blue Private Villas by Lov : Located between Grand Baie and Peyrebere. Ultra-modern, enormous (180m²), and superbly equipped villa with a private pool from €145 a night, breakfast at €12. Strong points: The beauty of the luxurious villas, the private pool, the location, the comfort. Truly an exceptional place in the north of Mauritius !
  • Seapoint Boutique Hotel : Located 4 km from Grand Baie. Luxurious and stunning double rooms from €340 a night, breakfast included. Strong points: The breathtaking views from the rooms of the garden and the sea, the beautiful outdoor areas, the excellent breakfast, the proximity to the beach, the attentive staff, and the quality of service. The best choice for a luxury stay in the north of Mauritius!
  • Arkenstone Studios : Located close to Chamarel and Le Morne Brabant mountain. Modern, spacious, bright, fully equipped studio with a kitchen starting at only €50 a night! Strong points: The location for visiting the 7 Colored Earths and climbing the Morne Brabant mountain, free private parking, the view from the studio balconies, the friendly and helpful host, and the peaceful neighborhood. The best choice for an affordable stay in the south of Mauritius !
  • The River House : Located in Tamarin next to the Black River Gorges National Park and Flic-en-Flac. Spacious double room with a terrace and splendid river views starting from €110 a night, breakfast included. Strong points: The peaceful location, the stunning setting with the garden and the river, the beach only a 5-minute walk away, the fantastic breakfast, and the pool. It’s my favorite for its incredible value for money !
  • Sands Suites Resort & Spa : Located in Tamarin Bay, right on the beachfront. Bright and spacious suites tastefully decorated from €350 a night, breakfast included. Strong points: The magnificent views from the rooms, the services on offer, the delightful staff, and the delicious food. Recommended for a luxury stay in south Mauritius !

To help you visualize your itinerary a bit better, I’ve created a map of all the best places to visit during your week in Mauritius. Mauritius’ airport is in Mahébourg (marked in red on the map).

You can display the map legend by clicking the button with a small arrow located in the top left corner.

If you want to rent a boat for a fun day at sea during your stay in Mauritius, I highly recommend using Samboat . Simply put, they have the most comprehensive boat rental offerings !

Motorboats, sailboats, yachts, small license-free boats, with or without a skipper: you’ll be spoiled for choice.

So, why wait any longer to book your incredible sea trip in Mauritius ?
