‘Rags’ To Riches … It’s Been Some Journey

Owner Wayne Roser and trainer Adam Trinder with Mystic Journey after her Australian Guineas win

Owner Wayne Roser and trainer Adam Trinder with Mystic Journey after her Australian Guineas win (Racing Photos)

Imagine purchasing a yearling for $11,000 at the Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale and, just on two years later, cheer on as said filly wins the $1 million Group One Australian Guineas over 1600m at Flemington.

The stuff of dreams? You betcha.

Mystic Journey is, in every sense of the word, the pride of the Apple Isle. While admittedly bred by Victorian based Ralph Zito, along with his wife Peta, Joe and Rhonda Cichello and John and Diane Button, the filly’s dam, White Gold, has spent the majority of her life in Tassie, while Mystic Journey’s sire, Needs Further, stands at one of Tasmania’s oldest farms, Armidale Stud.

Trained at Spreyton (northern Tasmania) by Adam Trinder, Mystic Journey simply goes strength to strength with nine wins from 12 starts, peeling off five straight since the Listed Jim Maloney at Caulfield last September.

She backed up with a comfortable victory in the Group Two Aquis Farm Fillies Classic at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate day before returning south.

Then, on the back of a stakes win in Hobart last month, she was sent out a deserved favourite for the Australian Guineas, winning with over two lengths to spare. No wonder they’re calling her the Winx of Tasmania! The Guineas also took her earnings to $1,012,600 and she will next appear in the $5 million All-Star Mile at Flemington on 16 March.

That $11,000 is looking better by the minute!

“We thought she was a lovely, cheap little filly who would go and do a job for us, but we never thought in our wildest dreams that it would end up in a Group One at Flemington!,” an elated Trinder reveals. “This was my fiancée, Leah’s pick at the sales … she loved her.”

As does Wayne Roser, a major client of Trinder who races Mystic Journey in white, red diamond and sleeves silks.

A former barrister in NSW, Roser began sending horses to Trinder around seven years ago and the pair’s success stories include 10-time winner, Valiant Warrior.

Quite a few horses but nothing too earth shattering … until now.

But get this, Roser returned to the scene of his climb last year where he purchased another Needs Further filly, this one out of a half sister to Mystic Journey, for $28,000, at the Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

Naming her Mystical Pursuit, the filly has won four from four – including the Listed pair of Elwick Stakes and Gold Sovereign – for a tick over $200,000 in prizemoney.

(Mystical Pursuit was also bred by Zito and co. and, like Mystic Journey, was sold by Armidale Stud: “I’m fairly certain that Wayne has only purchased the three yearlings from us … one is a Group One winner, the other is likely to be Tasmania’s Champion 2YO, while he bought a Dissident filly for $30,000 at the Tassie sale last month,” Armidale’s David Whishaw explains. “Probably be a good idea to keep your eye on the Dissident filly!”)

As for Zito and crew, if they’re dirty on only getting $11,000 for their yearling, they’ve done a good job of hiding the hurt.

A devotee of line breeding, Zito is quick to point out that they while they retain quite a few of what they breed, when they do send one to the sales they like to be known as sellers.

“We’re only a relatively small operation with half a dozen mares but we’ve managed to breed some 80 winners in the last 20 years,” Zito enthused. “People might think I regret selling her but there are no guarantees in this game and things might not have worked out if I’d kept her.

“I focus more on what a great result it is for Tasmania. Mystic Journey’s dam, White Gold, produced a lovely Fighting Sun filly last spring and is in foal to Fiorente, but will be heading back to Armidale Stud shortly to be again covered by Needs Further.

“He’s a serious horse that Needs Further. Hopefully the rise and rise of Mystic Journey, and Mystical Pursuit for that matter, will bring more focus on the stallion from mainland breeders.”

Remarkably, Mystic Journey becomes the first Tasmanian trained horse to win a Group One on the Australian mainland since Malua’s Australian Cup in 1886 – nearly 133 years ago.

“I’ve been confident for weeks that Mystic Journey would run well in the Australian Guineas and I started phoning around to a lot of people I know in the industry, asking them about the last Tassie trained horse to win a Group One,” David Whishaw reveals. “I kept getting ‘not in my lifetime’ and I even rang a couple of people in their 80s who said the same thing … ‘not in my lifetime’.

(Ironically, Adam Trinder’s grandfather Ray had Piping Lane but handed the horse over to Victorian trainer George Hanlon prior to the galloper’s victory in the 1972 Melbourne Cup).

“I can’t even begin to tell you how excited we all are. It’s a real shot in the arm for the local breeding industry. It’s great for Adam Trinder, great for Wayne Roser, great for the breeders who continue to support Tasmania and great for our stallion Needs Further.

“Needs Further’s oldest are now 4YOs and he’s had a stakes winner with every crop: Pateena Arena, Mystic Journey and Mystical Pursuit, have won the Elwick Stakes in successive years and have nine stakes victories between them.

“Tasmania is only a small industry with not a lot of mares go around, but Needs Further is really starting to hit his straps and wins like that on Saturday will draw a lot more attention from other states.

“He’s a Group winning sprinter by Encosta de Lago and a half brother to Hallowed Crown, while his yearlings have sold up to $95,000 off a fee of $3,300 (now $5,500). What’s more, they’ve averaged over nine times service fee.

“His stablemate, Alpine Eagle has got some very nice foals on the ground, so it’s all great for us at the moment and, I’m happy to say, absolutely tremendous for Tasmania.

“They say it’s all about the journey and not the destination and the way that filly won on the weekend, it’s turning out to be a bloody good journey!”

Mystic Journey set to be honoured on The All-Star Mile Raceday

The inaugural winner of the world’s richest mile race will have a race named in her honour on The All-Star Mile Raceday (Saturday, 19 March) next year when The Mystic Journey (2000m) makes its debut on the support card at Flemington.

Having recently been retired to begin her new life as a broodmare, the horse affectionately known as ‘Betty’ won’t be lining up in the fourth edition of The All-Star Mile but her heroic performance in the 2019 race will be commemorated through the creation of the new $200,000 contest (set weights and penalties) for fillies and mares.

It is fitting that Flemington will stage the first running of The Mystic Journey given that the mighty mare’s two biggest wins – in the 2019 Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) and The All-Star Mile (1600m) – both came at the host venue for the 2022 edition of Australia’s only fan-voted race.

The Mystic Journey is one of eight races on The All-Star Mile undercard, with the new VOBIS Gold Comet (1000m) for sprinters aged three years and older set to make its debut and two $200,000 quality handicaps – renamed The Regal Power (2000m) and The Mugatoo (1600m) – also featuring on the raceday.

The $200,000 VOBIS Gold Comet, offering a further $30,000 in VOBIS bonuses, is a new addition to the lucrative VOBIS Gold Premier Race Series, which is now worth more than $5.2 million in prizemoney and bonuses across 19 races this season.

The new race, which is only open to VOBIS Gold-nominated horses, will complement the $200,000 VOBIS Gold Reef (1600m), which was won earlier this year by the Shane Fliedner-trained Air Defence and returns to The All-Star Mile Raceday program in 2022.

Racing Victoria (RV)’s Executive General Manager – Racing, Greg Carpenter, said: “The All-Star Mile is more than just a horse race and given that Mystic Journey cost only $11,000 and went on to win over $4 million in prizemoney throughout her career, her fairy-tale story perfectly encapsulates The All-Star ethos and so it is only fitting that we name a race in Betty’s honour.

“The inaugural running of The Mystic Journey is set to be one of the many highlights on The All-Star Mile Raceday at Flemington next March and, whilst the fourth running of the world’s richest mile will be the showpiece event, we are very pleased with the spread of races on the support card.

“The VOBIS program, with the outstanding support of TBV, is going from strength to strength so we are delighted to unveil the new VOBIS Gold Comet and I look forward to seeing some exciting sprinters explode down the famous Flemington straight, which celebrates its 150th year of operation in 2022.

“We are now less than three months out from The All-Star Mile and the sense of excitement is already starting to grow, so today’s announcement will only add an extra element to the build-up.”

Unlike The Mystic Journey, which will retain its title, at this stage The Regal Power and The Mugatoo – honouring the respective All-Star Mile champions in 2020 and 2021 – will only feature in 2022 with a rotation policy set to determine those two race names in the future.

Both quality handicaps will feature a maximum topweight of 61kg with a minimum weight of 53kg, with The Mugatoo designed to provide a suitable racing opportunity for any All-Star Mile emergency runners which fail to gain a start in the marquee contest.

The remaining races on the program are the $150,000 Grand Handicap Sprint (1200m), which was claimed last year by the Danny O’Brien-trained Exeter; the Grand Handicap Classic (2500m) for stayers, which is also worth $150,000; and the recently-announced $250,000 Country Mile Series Final (1600m) with qualifiers from five heats and a wildcard race set to make up the 16-runner field.

With the Grand Handicaps to be run as Benchmark 80 races, the spread of weights will be a point of difference with horses rated 80 allocated 62kg down to a minimum weight of 53kg. Both races will also offer a $20,000 VOBIS Gold owners’ bonus to the winning horse if eligible, as too will the Country Mile Series Final.

The full program for The All-Star Mile 2022 Raceday at Flemington, which will collectively offer $6.67 million in prizemoney and bonuses, is as follows:

Nominations for The All-Star Mile close at 12 noon (AEDT) on Monday, 10 January 2022 with the $500 entry fee donated to the Good Friday Appeal supporting the Royal Children’s Hospital. Nominations for the support program will close at 12 noon (AEDT) on Monday, 14 March 2022.
