Marilda responds immediately each time I message, email or what’s app her. Due to the Santiago riots I have my flight from Santiago to Punta Arenas changed a few times and each time she responded by saying that there will be a pick up at the airport and that she will change the bus travel time to Pourte Natales . This trip would not be possible without her help so thank you Marilda. We finally arrived at our hotel by 10 pm and she had the hotel staff waiting for us. Ket Ng

Patagonia: Torres Del Paine ‘W’ Trek – 5 Days Tour

  • Wildlife Trekking

Patagonia: Torres Del Paine ‘W’ Trek – 5 Days

We wanted to have 2 weeks worth of sightseeing in Patagonia including W trek and parts of the Argetinian side, and after contacting James he was able to organise everything quickly and within our budget (with some tweaks due to it being winter). For the W Trek we felt super lucky to have Humberto and Bastian as our guide / porter as they were knowledgeable about the trek itself and some of the history. We felt Humberto did heaps to accommodate us, with every meal sorted, accommodation organised and flawless navigation. There were some miscommunications along the way as we had to change guides but everything was handled well and there was no detriment to our trip. Chatting with Humberto was particularly great at distracting us from some of the more tenuous part of the trek. Although Bastian didn't speak English, he still tried to chat with us and we conversed in broken Spanish which we loved! Both were fun and engaging people and would absolutely recommend them for similar excursions. Completing the w trek, Edwin organised bus tickets to el calafate where Edwin had organised a driver to take us to the Perito Moreno Glacier and the subsequent drive to El Chalten. The driver was professional, reliable and safe, and although didn't speak much English always tried to give some commentary of any sites along the way. Accommodation in both locations was great and we particularly enjoyed meeting the hosts at Hostería Confín Patagónico (El Chalten) who were lovely. For our trek in El Chalten Edwin organised Juan as our guide. Juan was very knowledgeable about the hikes in the area, and had a few small secrets and tricks to make the walking manageable After finishing our trek in El Chalten, our driver returned to take us to the airport on time. Overall, we can only look back in delight with our trip and commend James on making it happen and happen mostly flawlessly. All the vendors that he used were great people who knew their stuff, and were reliable, safe and amicable. James himself was very responsive when we texted with questions and was managed all activities and logistics without issue.

Argentina & Chile: Amazing Patagonia - 13 days Tour

Argentina & Chile: Amazing Patagonia - 13 days

The Best of Patagonia 13 Days, El Calafate to Ushuaia, was a fantastic experience. The country was amazing, steppes, forests, the Andes Mountains, glaciers and beautiful deep blue coloured lakes. El Calafate and El Chalten were both very beautiful, El Chalten being the trekking capital of Argentina. Further south in the Chilean towns of Puerto Natales and Punta Arenas we continued to experience wonderful country. The bus ride from Punta Arenas to Ushuaia was long but again through interesting scenery and events - ferry crossing of the Magellan Staits, entering and leaving Chile and Argentina, and the wonder of the final passage into Ushuaia, the most southern city in the world. Transport was very comfortable, convenient and reliable, pick ups always being on time. Accommodation was very comfortable, breakfasts were great, and the staff very friendly and helpful. Any thing that needed attention was dealt with very quickly and in a very efficient manner. Fully recommended. Thank you to Lujan and Marcela for their prompt communication and suggestions to make our stay so memorable.

Trips to Patagonia Reviews

My husband and I did the South American landscape tour, Argentina and Chile. It was Amazing!!!! The tour as is has a great itinerary but I had a few extra things I wanted to add. Wendy was able to add my excursions and arrange all the transportation. Everything was so well organized the rides and tours were always on time and always in contact with you. We loved our trip. Would definitely plan a trip with them again!!!
Overall, I thought this was a pretty great trip package! The BIG highlights are of course Mount Fitz Roy and Laguna Torre (El Chalten), Glacier Perito Moreno (El Calafate), and Base Las Torres (Torres Del Paine, Chile). I personally thought the initial hike of the trip though (on the 2nd day) called Laguna Amarga was a little basic, short, and not overly fascinating or challenging and maybe could've been replaced with something else? But that said, we still saw some guanacos (llama-like animals) on the path and the bulk of the Los Torres park mountains in the distance during that hike. So I guess it was okay. In terms of the accommodations, I was very very pleased with the selection, especially the first and last hotels (in Puerto Natalas, Chile, and El Chalten, Argentina). They were all pretty bouge-y / snazzy looking places with nice amenities. I wish the hotel in El Chalten had better / faster wifi though. As a side note, I bought a cell data plan for Argentina and only had Edge (slower than 3G) in El Chalten and there were also no cell service on the bus rides / roads between cities. So better and faster wifi especially in this last location would've been nice. In terms of the flow, organization, and execution of the itinerary and this travel company, A+, I must say! Drivers there to pick you up from airport / bus and transfer to hotel, waiting for you with a name card in hand. Good communication from the tour companies if there was a change in itinerary for the following day. Hotels were well picked with breakfasts included. Final thoughts? Look, if you wanted to do all the above highlights for hiking in a more budget-friendly way, sure you can find a way to do it. You can buckle down, search the places, organize the accomodations, stay at cheaper hostels, pay for taxis as you go, organize the bus transfers, not have guides on the hikes and do them all solo, etc. Therefore, you might pay a hair bit more in taking this package than you would if you figured out and just did everything yourself, but you do feel like you're living in the heart of luxury once your done the hikes. And the views and open-air, scenic experiences of those hikes are pretty great, too! 4.5 out of 5 stars

  • Warm Seasons - November to March: The optimal time for travelers who seek warmer temperatures and the activities that are best enjoyed during this time falls between November and March. During these months, Patagonia basks in warmth, and daylight extends generously across both the Chilean and Argentine sides. Nights are remarkably short, lasting just six hours, though occasional night frosts and sleet may still visit the highlands even during the summer months. For a quieter experience amidst the spring blossoms, mid-November to mid-December offers fewer crowds.
  • Cold Season - June to August: Winter in Patagonia, from June to August, may not be the best time for outdoor adventurers seeking hiking and trekking experiences. However, it does offer its unique charm. This is the best time to visit Patagonia if you're drawn to the solitude of snow-covered landscapes and want to try your hand at winter sports like skiing and snowshoeing. The lack of crowds and the dramatic icy landscapes make it a special season for those seeking a quieter, more introspective Patagonian experience.
  • Transitional Seasons - Spring (October to November) and Autumn (March to April): In the transitional seasons, Patagonia undergoes fascinating transformations. Springtime in Patagonia, from October to November, ushers in a sense of renewal as the region awakens from its winter slumber. This is one of the best times to go to Patagonia if you prefer milder weather and fewer crowds. Spring offers crisp air, blooming landscapes, and wildlife returning to their breeding grounds, making it an excellent season for hiking and trekking through the picturesque trails of Torres del Paine and Los Glaciares National Parks. As autumn arrives, from March to April, the landscapes transform into a tapestry of warm, earthy hues. You will find Patagonia at its most colorful, showcasing vibrant autumn foliage while ushering in fewer visitors. The northern regions maintain some warmth compared to the south's milder temperatures. This is the best time of year to visit Patagonia for photographers and travelers who relish tranquility, with pleasant weather and opportunities for outdoor pursuits.

Patagonia travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Where is Patagonia?

Patagonia is a geographical region located at the southern tip of South America.

It spans the lower sections of Argentina and Chile and is governed by both countries.

Do I need a visa to visit Patagonia?

You will need to organize your visa. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information.

Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date information specific to your nationality.

Check the Essential Trip Information section of the itinerary for more information.

What is the weather like in Patagonia?

Patagonia is much cooler than the rest of South America. With diverse terrain ranging from glaciers to mountains and coastlines, the region sees extreme variations in weather.

Average temperatures range from 48-64°F in summer and 32-43°F in winter, but sub-zero temperatures are common.

The weather can be unpredictable at any time of year, and it feels much cooler when there are strong winds.

Snow is possible towards the end of autumn (May), and continues into winter with heavy snowfall down south and in the mountains.

When is the best time to visit Patagonia?

October to March (spring/summer) is considered to be the best time to visit Patagonia; this is when most of our trips run. During this period, daytime temperatures average up to 72°F, but it's a chilly 39°F at night.

Rain and strong winds are possible at any time of year and can make the temperature feel much cooler.

Is tipping customary in Patagonia?

Tipping in Patagonia is common, but only when you’re satisfied with the service.

Aim for 10-15% of a bill at a restaurant or cafe as a general guide (if it’s not included already).

It’s also common to give hotel porters, drivers and other staff a small tip.

What is internet access like in Patagonia?

You will find wi-fi in most hotels, cafes and restaurants in large towns and cities, but it can be harder to find as you venture to more remote areas.

You may wish to buy a local SIM card if you want to stay in contact with folks at home, but a phone signal can still be patchy in remote areas.

What are the toilets like in Patagonia?

You will find Western-style flushable toilets in Patagonia.

It is a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as they’re not always provided.

Just note that while the toilets are modern, the plumbing isn’t and can clog easily, so you may see signs asking you not to flush toilet paper and use the bin provided instead.

What is ATM access like in Patagonia?

ATMs are available in larger towns and cities but are less common in small villages or rural areas.

Make sure you have enough cash before leaving urban areas.

Argentina uses the Argentinean Peso, while Chile uses the Chilean Peso. It might also be worth bringing some US dollars.

Can I use my credit card in Patagonia?

Credit cards may not be accepted in small towns and rural areas.

Make sure to carry enough cash when visiting rural areas in case credit cards are not an option.

What to pack for Patagonia

Please check your Essential Trip Information for a complete list of packing suggestions for your itinerary.

  • Closed-in, waterproof walking shoes/hiking boots

How to Travel to Patagonia

Here's everything you need to know about visiting Patagonia, including the best treks and places to stay.

patagonia chile adventure trip

Stretching across Chile and Argentina, Patagonia has long lured travelers to what is very nearly the end of the world. Here, in the countries' national parks, are snow-capped mountains, cobalt fjords, and old-growth forests. At the southernmost tip of the Americas, icebergs rupture with a dramatic roar from ancient, massive glaciers.

Torres del Paine National Park in Chile and Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina are two of the region’s top highlights, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors per year. For a complete Patagonian travel journey, consider visiting both. Of course, doing so requires a lot of logistical planning — especially during the high season. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you maximize your travels in this wonderfully remote corner of the planet.

Though most hotels in the region remain open year-round, you might find amenities and activities that keep tourists comfortable and entertained throughout the busy season are unavailable during winter in the Southern Hemisphere, which is from April to September.

To avoid the crowds and still experience good weather, visit during the spring when the flowers are in bloom, or fall when the leaves are a fiery mosaic of red, orange, and yellow. The summer months (December to February) have the mildest weather, but keep in mind that temperatures average below 70 degrees and winds are strong.

Travelers should be aware that the weather in Patagonia is highly unpredictable, particularly in spring and early summer. Weather and temperatures can fluctuate without warning, and violent storms can sweep in from the Pacific. It’s helpful to pad your schedule with additional days in case you encounter inclement weather.

How to Get to Patagonia

Because distances are quite long in Chile and Argentina, you will probably want to fly to Patagonia (unless you have several days to spare for a road trip from Buenos Aires or Santiago). Airline seats fill up quickly during peak season (December to February), so you should purchase tickets as far in advance as possible: Six months is ideal. For other months in the high season (October until early May), book at least three months ahead to avoid steep fares and limited options.

In Chile, LATAM Airlines serves southern Chilean Patagonia year-round with daily flights between Santiago and Punta Arenas, a common jumping-off point for Patagonia travel, with a flight time of three and a half hours.

Sky Airlines, Chile’s low-cost provider, also flies between Santiago and both Punta Arenas and Puerto Natales — another jumping-off point to Punta Arenas' south — often stopping at Puerto Montt, though passengers usually get to stay on the plane. Sky Airlines generally offers lower fares than LATAM.

Puerto Natales fares are cheaper the earlier you book. And as for driving time, it's three hours between Puerto Natales and Punta Arenas, two hours between Puerto Natales and Torres del Paine National Park, and four to five hours between Punta Arenas and the park.

In Argentina, Calafate and Ushuaia are the primary entryways, both less than a four-hour flight from Buenos Aires. These destinations are serviced by LATAM Airlines and Aerolineas Argentinas. Los Glaciares National Park, home to the famous Perito Moreno Glacier, is an hour's drive from El Calafate Airport. Another popular destination in this region is the trekking mecca El Chaltén, which is a three-hour drive from El Calafate Airport, where you can rent a car.

How to Get Around

Many of Patagonia's luxury hotels include transfers to and from the airport, as well as transportation for daily excursions. Traveling between Chile and Argentina can be done easily by land or sea. Unfortunately, there are no flights from Puerto Natales or Punta Arenas to El Calafate or Ushuaia.

By sea, Australis cruises run from the end of September to the beginning of April, connecting Punta Arenas and Ushuaia. Expeditions lasting four to eight nights navigate fjords, the Avenue of the Glaciers, the Strait of Magellan, Beagle Channel, and Cape Horn. Daily Zodiac rides get passengers up close to the ice and wildlife including penguin colonies and elephant seals.

For an overland trip, you can rent a car, organize a private transfer, or catch a bus. The bus company Bus-Sur connects Puerto Natales, Chile, and El Calafate, Argentina, daily during the tourist season and several times a week during the low season. The transfer takes five hours or longer, depending on how long it takes to clear customs. Book online at least a month in advance to guarantee a seat, especially during the high season.

Traveling by bus or organized tour is the most convenient way to cross the border because guides and drivers handle many of the logistics, but self-driving tourists travel between Chile and Argentina in private vehicles all the time. Do your research on the process before attempting a border crossing on your own.

What to Pack

In Patagonia, travelers will need to be ready for all kinds of weather. Since temperatures can go from freezing to 70 degrees over the course of a single day, it’s crucial that travelers pack layers. A waterproof jacket and trekking boots are essential, as are sunscreen and a pair of quality sunglasses (the sun can be extremely bright).

If you’re staying in upscale lodges, it's fine to bring a suitcase, but a backpack is needed for multiday trekking. Smaller backpacks are ideal for full- or half-day excursions. Many upscale hotels provide personal water bottles and trekking poles.

Packing Essentials

  • Long thermal underwear that wicks perspiration
  • Water-repellent hiking pants
  • Light pullover or sweatshirt
  • Fleece or down liner
  • Waterproof parka or weatherproof jacket
  • Hat for sun protection
  • Liner or wind-stopper gloves
  • Waterproof hiking boots
  • Long hiking socks
  • Neck gaiter
  • Hiking backpack or day pack

Chilean Patagonia Travel Tips

Chile's portion of Patagonia is smaller and more rugged — i.e., less touristy — than Argentina's. Head to the Chile side to get off the beaten path and go beyond the major highlights.

Travelers flock to Patagonia to experience the otherworldly beauty of Torres del Paine National Park and spot Patagonia’s wildlife, including the Big Five: pumas, llama-like guanacos, South Andean deer known as huemul, Andean condors, and the ostrich-like rhea (or ñandú). There are also flamingos, foxes, penguins, and more than 100 species of birds. Several tour companies offer multiday puma-tracking safaris through the park.

Visitors will also want to explore the park’s old-growth forests. In the canopies of primeval southern beech trees (lenga, coihue, ñire) you can spot Magellanic woodpeckers and Austral parakeets.

Full- and half-day treks along the famous W Circuit (named for the shape of the route) offer one-of-a-kind vistas of sweeping freshwater lakes, teal lagoons, ice floes, and glimmering glaciers. The W Circuit is a roughly 50-mile trail that takes four or five days to walk and showcases major attractions. Trekkers settle into refugios (basic dorm-style shelters) or campsites for overnight stays.

Less remote, you can stroll through the colorful fishing town of Puerto Natales, or explore the region’s labyrinth of scenic fjords, where immense glaciers and marine life can be admired from the deck of a boat. On the shores of Punta Arenas, visit penguin colonies at Seno Otway or Magdalena Island and look out for sea lions and whales that populate the waters. You can also kayak the Strait of Magellan.

Where to Stay

Patagonia's luxury lodges offer all-inclusive packages that cover airport transfers, a wide range of full- and half-day excursions, and three gourmet meals per day with premium wine and cocktails. Explora is a pioneer in this category, offering dozens of expeditions led by experienced guides in Patagonia and Torres del Paine national parks. Besides that, 14 exclusive villas are the signature of Awasi , where guests have their own private guide and four-wheel drive vehicle to explore the scenery at their own pace.

Overlooking Lake Sarmiento and Paine Massif, Tierra Patagonia subscribes to an adventure spa philosophy. Guests are encouraged to unwind after jam-packed days of exploration with a massage or a session in the open-air hot tub.

For glampers, the sustainable EcoCamp is a geodesic dome hotel inside Torres del Paine National Park. Accommodations range from basic to over-the-top heated two-story tents that boast private terraces, bathrooms, and windows facing upward to the Patagonian sky. Assisted camping experiences on the trekking circuit are arranged by operators like Las Torres , Cascada Expediciones , MT Sobek , and Swoop Patagonia .

A number of upscale properties are located in and around the colorful fishing town of Puerto Natales, too. The Singular Patagonia , a property situated on the banks of the Last Hope Sound, is an early-20th-century national monument that’s been refurbished with industrial-chic accents.

At Lakutaia Lodge , on Navarino Island next to Cape Horn, guests are deeply immersed in the surrounding glaciers and fjords. But the real draw for adventurers is the opportunities to helifish and heliski.

What to Eat and Drink

Most of the lodges on private reserves offer full room and board, employing talented chefs who take advantage of locally sourced ingredients like white strawberries, rhubarb, seaweed, Patagonian honey, and gamier specialties like guanaco and Patagonian hare.

From the sea, try South American king crab, snook-and-hake ceviche, conger eel, choritos (mussels), and oysters. Wash it all down with a Chilean pisco sour or bottle of local wine.

Day Trips From Chile

Hotels in Chilean Patagonia offer a staggering array of full- and half-day excursions for just about any interest and fitness level: mountain trekking, horseback riding, cycling, kayaking, sailing scenic fjords, and glacier cruises, among others. For avid hikers, hiking to the base of Torres del Paine ("Mirador Las Torres") is a must-do. It’s a challenging, full-day out-and-back trip, but a clear view — weather depending — of the granite spires rising from the turquoise glacial lake is an ample reward.

You can take a Zodiac voyage to get up-close views of ancient, glistening glaciers. Grey Glacier is a popular destination, as are the Balmaceda and Serrano Glaciers, accessible from the wharf in Puerto Natales. Otherwise, spend the day with Chilean cowboys at the family-run Estancia Mercedes for horseback riding along fjords.

General Tips for Visiting Chile

  • When visiting during Chile’s summer months, beware of biting midges. Spray yourself with natural insect repellent at regular intervals and wear light-colored clothing with long sleeves, as these small flies are attracted to dark colors.
  • If you are an avid hiker, avoid heavy crowds of backpackers in Torres del Paine National Park by traveling in November or April.
  • On challenging treks, opt for two trekking poles. They will save your knees on the descent.

Argentine Patagonia Travel Tips

Argentina's portion of Patagonia is larger and more geographically diverse than Chile's portion. Another potential benefit is that the Andes Mountains leaves Argentina in a rain shadow, meaning it stays dry while the Chilean side takes the rain that rolls in from the Pacific.

The 97-square-mile Perito Moreno Glacier — a declared UNESCO World Heritage site in Los Glaciares National Park — attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year. Located near El Calafate in one of the world’s most exceptional ice fields, it’s a must-see on the Argentine side of Patagonia. Boat cruises on Argentina's largest freshwater lake, Lake Argentino, will take you close enough to witness colossal icebergs fall from the glacier into the water. Some tours give visitors a chance to hike out onto the glacier wearing metal crampons.

Visiting the area’s historic estancias offers travelers a glimpse into the rural life of Patagonian ranchers. Estancia Cristina and Nibepo Aike (see below, Where to Stay) are destinations in their own right. Unspoiled landscapes and opportunities to hike, horseback ride, and visit the area’s stunning glaciers are abundant.

Three hours north by car from El Calafate is the laid-back hiking hamlet of El Chaltén, famous for its towering Fitz Roy mountain peak. The tiny frontier town is dotted with picturesque chalets and a network of scenic trails that suit every skill level.

You’ll travel to the “end of the world” in Tierra del Fuego. Its capital city, Ushuaia, is a port of arrival or departure when traveling by sea between Argentina and Chile. Take a boat cruise or catamaran trip to see penguins, sea lions, and cormorants inhabiting the legendary Beagle Channel made famous by naturalist Charles Darwin on his Beagle voyage in 1831.

Tierra del Fuego National Park offers a lush sub-Antarctic rain forest shaded with beech trees, while Glacier Martial offers a panoramic view of Ushuaia and the channel. International anglers make pilgrimages to the banks of the Rio Grande in the hope of hooking a record-breaking brown trout.

Two pleasant hotels offering relatively affordable accommodations right on the southern shore of Lake Argentino are Esplendor El Calafate Hotel and Xelena .

EOLO , 30 minutes west of El Calafate, is built on 10,000 acres of arid steppe and pampas grass with lake views. Antiques, heavy wooden furniture, and mismatched dishware give the lodge a cozy country atmosphere. Nearby, guests can take guided treks, go horseback riding, mountain biking, and bird-watching. The hotel can also arrange excursions to the Perito Moreno and Upsala Glaciers. Book one of the corner suites for an especially good view.

Further out of town is Estancia Cristina , an early-20th-century sheep ranch accessible only by the resort's boat across Lake Argentino. Set on 54,000 acres of wild Patagonian terra firma, the preserved estancia offers a menu of excursions including trekking, horseback riding, and sailing among icebergs near the Upsala Glacier.

Meanwhile, Estancia Nibepo Aike on the shore of Lake Roca is a working ranch founded by a Croatian pioneer at the turn of the 20th century. The estancia still raises cattle and sheep, granting guests the opportunity to see sheep be sheared, learn cowboy skills on horseback, and sample a traditional prepared asado (barbecue) of Patagonian lamb. Guests can also take day trips from here to explore the lesser-visited glaciers Cubo, Frías, and Dickson.

Between El Chaltén and El Calafate, you can stay at Helsingfors Lodge , a former ranch set on the shores of Lake Viedma with great food and stunning mountain views. On Lake San Martin, several hours north of El Calafate, there's also the pristine private nature reserve that houses Estancia El Cóndor , named for the nearby condor nesting sites.

Los Cerros , located on a hilltop providing epic views of El Chaltén, is the most luxe option in a backpacking haven brimming with hostels. And the exclusive Aguas Arribas Lodge , about an hour's drive north of El Chaltén, is a secluded lakeside retreat looking upon the north face of Mount Fitz Roy.

In Ushuaia, luxury properties Los Cauquenes and Arakur Ushuaia Resort & Spa both overlook the Beagle Channel and offer guided wilderness hikes and excursions on the water.

Most estancias offer full board with three meals per day, but there are some local delicacies you must check off your list.

El Calafate gets its name from the calafate berry (barberry), and there is a local legend that says whoever eats one will return to Patagonia. Try calafate gelato, calafate liqueur, and delicious jams made from chaura (prickly heath) and zarzaparrilla (wild currant).

Experiencing a Patagonian asado is a must at one of the estancias . Watch the asadors cook local lamb on an iron cross over a live fire and enjoy it with a glass of Patagonian pinot noir in hand. One of the best restaurants for grilled cuisine is La Tablita in El Calafate. In Ushuaia, dine on classic Argentine seafood at the restaurant Kaupé , considered one of the best in the country.

While you're in Argentina, be sure to try Beagle , a beer brewed using meltwater from nearby glaciers. However, arguably the most important and culturally significant of all Argentine drinks is mate. It's a longstanding social ritual to drink yerba mate tea, a caffeine-rich blend of dried herbs steeped in hot water, from a hollowed gourd or wooden mate cup. Of course, you must use a bombilla (a traditional straw) for the full experience. Try adding a little sugar if the taste is too bitter for your palate.

Day Trips From Argentina

UIG/Getty Images

A trip to Perito Moreno Glacier in Los Glaciares National Park is one of Patagonia’s most iconic excursions. Book an ice trekking adventure — big or small — with Hielo & Aventura .

Another guide company, Marpatag , takes guests on multiday glacier adventure sailings along Lake Argentino, visiting the Upsala, Spegazzini, and Perito Moreno Glaciers.

A full-day excursion to Estancia Cristina includes a boat ride past glaciers and waterfalls, too. Cañadon de los Fosiles is a 4.5-hour trek from the estancia providing views of Lake Guillermo and the Upsala Glacier before descending through a valley of ancient fossils.

El Chaltén offers a variety of scenic day hikes including the Cerro Torre Trek, which takes about six hours, and the more challenging Mount Fitz Roy Trek, an eight-hour hike to Laguna de los Tres. You can also ice hike atop the Viedma Glacier.

In Tierra del Fuego, look for marine wildlife in the Beagle Channel or visit panoramic lookout points on hikes through Tierra del Fuego National Park.

General Tips for Visiting Argentina

  • Perito Moreno Glacier’s ice treks have strict age limits — typically from 18 to 65 years old — that differ by tour.
  • If you plan to spend a night at Estancia Cristina, you should overnight in Calafate before and after, as the boat departs early in the morning and returns in the late afternoon.
  • Avid hikers should visit El Chaltén in November or April to avoid heavy crowds.
  • Outdoor equipment is expensive in Argentina, so be certain you’re well equipped before traveling.

Do Americans Need a Visa to Visit Patagonia?

The capital cities Santiago, Chile, and Buenos Aires, Argentina, both serve as gateways to Patagonia. Americans do not need a visa or to pay a reciprocity fee to enter either country.

Which side to start on is a matter of personal preference. However, if you plan to visit both countries, you can start in one city and finish in the other, so you have the opportunity to experience both.

Why Go To Chilean Patagonia

With its aura of remote romance, wind-whipped Chilean Patagonia attracts those travelers with an eye for beauty and a zest for adventure. Icy glaciers plunge into emerald lakes; wild fjords snake through hardwood forests; and the Andes' dramatic peaks ascend into swirling clouds and mist. It's hardly surprising that Chilean Patagonia's fabled lands have lured Magellan, Darwin, and even Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Spend a day getting acquainted with the quirky Magellanic penguins congregating on Isla Magdalena . Then, continue south for jaw-dropping views of Tierra del Fuego 's sky high mountains, pristine glaciers, and verdant forests. When you're ready for some R&R, retreat to your cozy lodge to get energized with some fresh Patagonian air and a hearty supply of seafood and wine.

With so much to see and do, getting oriented in Chilean Patagonia can be a challenge. The territory's incredible size (consuming Chile's lower third) and diverse landscapes force you to be selective about where you explore. There are three distinct regions. In the north, the awe-inspiring Lake District extends from Puerto Montt to Aisén. The Southern Coast, a 620-mile strip of land, sits between the Lake District and Southern Chilean Patagonia . This southernmost region includes Puerto Natales , Punta Arenas , and Tierra del Fuego —three noteworthy places. You may not see everything, but be sure to take in the rugged spirit of this breathtaking natural setting.

Chilean Patagonia Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Chilean Patagonia is November to early March (summertime in the southern hemisphere). Although you'll compete with heavy crowds during this peak season, the weather is ideal for exploring Torres del Paine National Park and Tierra del Fuego . September, October, and November (spring) welcome colorful blooms, while March, April, and May (fall) usher in autumnal hues. Both times of year experience mild temperatures and fewer crowds. Avoid visiting between June and August (winter), when most attractions close and Southern Chilean Patagonia empties out. No matter when you visit, remember to pack layers and a sturdy windbreaker to shield yourself from Patagonia's chilly year-round winds.

Weather in Chilean Patagonia

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

  • There are two southernmost cities While Argentineans often cite Ushuaia (Argentina) as the world's southernmost city, Chileans say the title goes to their own Puerto Williams.
  • Border-hopping is easy If you don't mind waiting in a long line, it's relatively easy to pass from Chile to Argentina at one of the three border crossings.
  • Prepare for wind The gusts are strong at the tip of South America. In extreme conditions, car windshields have been known to crack. Arm yourself with the appropriate gear and a windbreaker, before heading to Tierra del Fuego and Cape Horn .

How to Save Money in Chilean Patagonia

  • Come during the shoulder seasons Visit between September and November (spring) or between March and May (fall). You'll capture spring blooms or autumnal foliage, mild temps, fewer visitors, and reduced hotel rates.
  • Pick up a car in Punta Arenas, not Puerto Natales Puerto Natales car rentals are quite steep compared to those in Puntas Arenas . To save extra bucks on your rental, get your wheels at Magallanes' provincial city.
  • Pack light Many domestic airlines have weight restrictions, so you'll want to avoid packing more than 22 pounds per person to prevent paying extra fees.

Culture & Customs

Chilean Patagonia contains an array of cultures. In Southern Chilean Patagonia , indigenous tribes, like the Tehuelche, live alongside the descendents of 19th-century European settlers, who came during the gold rush. In the Lake District and Southern Chilean Patagonia, sheep ranchers, fisherman, and guachos (cowboys) share charming estancias (rural ranches) and pampas (lowland landscapes) with newcomers. Today, you'll find tourists and locals rubbing elbows as they admire arresting views.

Although the official language here is Spanish, a growing tourism market has brought English to heavily trafficked spots and popular hotels. Additionally, hotel staff can connect you with an Anglophone guide if need be. Still, it's polite to know a few key Spanish greetings, like " buenos d í as " ("hello"), " por favor " ("please"), and " gracias " ("thank you").

Seafood, Cabernet Sauvignons, and Chardonnays are specialties in Patagonia. Along the coastline, particularly in the Lake District, you'll want to sample the daily trout, mussel, crab, or salmon catches. There are also plenty of other options on the menu, ranging from steak and lamb to empanadas and pizza. If you have a sweet-tooth, try one of the region's stone fruits, an ingredient infused in local fruit preserves and jams. As far as dining goes, don't expect to sit down for dinner till around 8 p.m. and plan to linger; dining is a leisurely affair here.

The official currency here is the Chilean peso (CLP). The peso goes far compared to the U.S. dollar: 500 CLP amounts to about $1 USD.

Getting Around Chilean Patagonia

The best ways to get around Chilean Patagonia are by car or plane. You can explore most areas by car, but you'll end up spending most of your vacation on the road. Unless you plan on visiting for a week or longer, you'll have to pick and choose your destinations within Chilean Patagonia. Numerous airlines allow you to easily hop between cities. You can also sail between cities on a ferry, but sea journeys are often attached to a hefty price tag. Conversely, buses are an affordable way to get around, but they're difficult to navigate and don't reach some must-see attractions .

To reach Chilean Patagonia, you'll most likely fly through Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (SCL)—located about 30 minutes west of Santiago, Chile—and then take a hopper flight to your desired destination. Consider booking a flight to Punta Arenas Airport (PUQ) as Punta Arenas serves as an excellent base for the region's top attractions. Alternatively, you could also cross into Chile from El Calafate in Argentine Patagonia , but this will take longer.

Entry & Exit Requirements

A valid passport is required for entry into Chile. U.S. travelers can stay for up to 90 days without obtaining a visa. Travelers arriving into Santiago's International Airport (SCL) will be issued with a tourist card and are required to pay a $140 USD reciprocity fee upon arrival. For more information on entry and exit requirements, consult the U.S. State Department's website .

You can cross from Chile into Argentina at three different borders: Dorotea Pass, Casas Viejas Pass, and Cancha Carrera. Each border-crossing can be reached from Puerto Natales . Dorotea Pass and Casas Viejas Pass are within 30 miles of Puerto Natales and are open year-round; however, they have varying operation hours throughout the year. Cancha Carrera is open only from December to March and provides travelers with access to El Calafate in Argentina via Route 40.

Travel to Chile & Argentina - First stop, Buenos Aires

buenos-aires-caminito

  • Transfer from the airport to your hotel – Day at leisure

Upon arrival, we will drive you to the city and you’ll have the rest of the day to enjoy Buenos Aires at your own pace. Buenos Aires is a marvelous, energetic, cosmopolitan city, full of color and different styles of architecture.

The capital of Argentina, and described as the Paris of South America, Buenos Aires proudly embraces its title, and also shows off plenty of its own culture! Argentinians are usually eager to host visitors; if you walk the streets with a map, someone will surely stop and ask if you need directions…that’s just our spirit!

Say Hueque Tips

  • Our recommendations for your first day in Buenos Aires.

Don’t know where to start? Don’t worry, che! (“che” means “guy” in Argentina). For this first day, feel free to wander the cobblestone streets lined with outdoor cafes, enjoy the mouthwatering aroma of world-famous Argentine beef sizzling on an open parrilla (barbeque), and browse the local antique and artisan markets that offer plenty of bargain shopping.

City Tour & Tango Show - Buenos Aires

buenos-aires-tango-1

  • Half-day city tour through Buenos Aires

In the morning we will pick you up from your hotel to enjoy our 5-hour Buenos Aires city tour—you will be swept away by the highlights of our beloved Buenos Aires! Throughout a half-day, you will have the chance to visit the historical and political center of the city; Plaza de Mayo, and the Pink House (the presidential house).

Next, we’ll move on to San Telmo, with its cobblestone streets and the oldest residential neighborhood, and then to La Boca where Buenos Aires turns colorful and tango is ever-present. Come walk Caminito Street and dance with the locals. The next stop is the chic and aristocratic Recoleta, where the big palaces remind us why Buenos Aires is called the “Paris of the South”.

  • Dinner and tango show

In the evening we’ll pick you up from your hotel to take you to a mystical place where you’ll discover one of our most ancient traditions. Tango is more than our national dance… tango is our immigrant origins, the talent of our local artists, the sensuality of Argentine women, and our way of dealing with a broken heart; dancing our way through tragic, and yet eternal, love stories.

Tonight you will enjoy a 3-hour professional display of tango and music with a group of local artists on stage immersed in an elegant and alluring place. The manners, ambiance, clothes, and dance steps that tango lovers used to practice 100 years ago will come to life again and you will travel back in time for a night.

This spectacular tango show in Buenos Aires will be accompanied by delicious Argentine and international cuisine. Dinner is all-inclusive, beverages included so you can lose yourself in the ethereal taste of Malbec wine. At the end of the evening, around midnight, you will be driven back to your hotel, fully in love with the bohemian spirit of our incredible city.

  • What you have to know about tango culture in Buenos Aires

Tango is, all in all, a cultural experience that’s deeply rooted in Argentine hearts. Where do regular people go to dance tango? There are an immense number of dance halls or milongas in Buenos Aires. Some of our favorites are La Viruta -beginner-friendly- and Salon Canning -with more advanced clientele- in the Palermo neighborhood. Tango has evolved a big deal in the past years, and now there are also LGBT milongas that encourage a most inclusive practice.

Travel to the Chilean and Argentine Patagonia - Bariloche

bariloche-lakes-2

  • Transfer from your hotel to Buenos Aires airport

It’s time to fly to the Lake District, the stunning start to your Patagonia adventure trip in Argentina and Chile. We’ll drive you to the domestic airport where you’ll take a short, 3-hour flight to Bariloche.

  • Transfer from Bariloche airport to your hotel – Day at leisure

Upon arrival, we’ll drive you to your hotel. Enjoy your free day in the city! Bariloche sits on the southern coast of Nahuel Huapi, a glacier-water lake with enthralling islands and beaches.

Hills and mountains framing the area allow visitors to enjoy all sorts of hiking trails and winter sports (Cerro Catedral is home to the most significant ski slopes in South America), as well as some mesmerizing views of the natural wonders of Patagonia. This region has it all — horseback riding through the Patagonian steppe, navigations through pristine blue-green waters, and the most mouthwatering chocolate in the country!

Our recommended activities for your free day in Bariloche:

  • If you want to check out some free activities around the area, you can wander the “Centro Cívico” where, among other things, people take a traditional photo with the cutest Saint Bernard dogs.
  • Walking along the Nahuel Huapi lakeshore wouldn’t be a wrong choice either, especially if it’s followed by a yummy visit to one of the many chocolate factories in the city. Who says that adventure has nothing to do with gastronomy? Not us!

Discover History and Nature of Argentinian Patagonia - Bariloche

bariloche-lakes (11)

  • Full-day visit, history and nature of Bariloche

This morning, we’ll pick you up from your hotel to start one of the most famous and traditional visits to the Lake District. For around 6 hours you will tour the area in an active way, and your guide will be constantly focused on sharing the vast history of the area and the most relevant facts about the natural heritage of Bariloche.

You will visit Campanario Hill, considered by National Geographic to be the 8th-best view in the world, and one of the most visited places here—1500 people go to enjoy the view every day. Our guides are local experts and know the perfect time to visit. They will bring you there before the crowds swarm so that you can have a close-up and intimate experience.

Other fabled places you will visit include Nahuel Huapi and the mild waters of Moreno Lake, Lopez and Capilla mountains, and the world-renowned Llao-Llao Hotel. Get ready to walk between millenary arrayanes trees on a nature-oriented outing through the impressive forest in the Llao-Llao Nature Park.

After filling your lungs with the refreshing air of the forest, you’ll enjoy your boxed lunch, and at the end of the day, we’ll take you back to your hotel.

Day at Leisure - Bariloche

bariloche-window-view

  • Optional tours – Rafting in Manso River

For your day at leisure in Bariloche, we recommend that you take an optional outing to go Rafting down Manso River inside Nahuel Huapi National Park.

We will drive you along National Route 40 (the legendary road that extends from the North to South of Argentina) to enjoy some scenic views, passing by lakes Gutierrez, Mascardi, and Guillelmo. At one stop, we’ll enter the land of a Native American Mapuche Community to share breakfast (maté or tea, and homemade fried bread and marmalade) and learn about their unique culture and traditions; a truly immersive and personal experience.

From there we will start our rafting adventure, cruising down Manso River on its emerald waters. For about 1 hour, you’ll navigate your way through some medium-intensity rapids with the backdrop of this fairy-tale valley. Depending on the weather, you may be able to take a relaxing swim!

On our way back, we’ll stop to have lunch in the historic restaurant, El Viejo Almacén. After this 10-hour experience, we’ll drive you back to Bariloche.

  • Age restriction for this tour

This tour is only available for children over 10 years old. If you are traveling with younger children, we recommend that you v isit Playa Bonita, on km 8 of Av. Bustillo (there are public buses leaving from downtown every twenty minutes). During the summer months, on hot days, it gets filled up with families and brave people who jump into the cold waters of Nahuel Huapi!

Cruise and Lake Crossing - Adventure Trip to Chilean Patagonia

puerto-varas-osorno-volcano

  • From Argentine to Chilean Patagonia – Full-day lake crossing

Time to cross borders and step into Chile, the land of the fjords! This is an 11-hour trip in which you’ll travel from Argentina to Chile in a different way, and have a day full of immersion into the beautiful landscapes of the Patagonian Lakes and relaxing navigations.

You’ll depart from your hotel in Bariloche by bus early in the morning to travel to Puerto Pañuelo, where you’ll embark on the first boat of the day. You’ll sail Nahuel Huapi Lake and reach Puerto Blest on a 1-hour navigation through beautiful woods and snow-capped mountains that surround the shore.

Who were the first men to embark on this adventurous journey? On the way, your local guide will reveal their history and other interesting facts about the vegetation and wildlife of the area.

From Puerto Blest, take a bus to Puerto Alegre where you’ll embark on your second boat of the day, crossing Lake Frías, with Mount Tronador as an amazing backdrop, to reach Puerto Frías, where you’ll finally cross borders into Chile.

Then, take a 2-hour bus passing by the legendary Andes Mountain Range to Pehulla, a beautiful eco-village where we’ll stop to have lunch before taking our last navigation of the day.

For the last part of the journey, explore the Todos Los Santos Lake (which stretches between Pehulla and Petrohúe), during a 2-hour navigation where you may see, weather permitting, the forbidding Puntiagudo and Osorno volcanoes.

Once in Petrohué, we’ll take you on a 3-hour bus trip, passing by Llanquihue Lake, the second-largest lake in Chile (and this is a land full of lakes), to Puerto Varas where we’ll drop you at your hotel.

Welcome to Chile! - Puerto Varas

Chile - Amazing view of Lake District

  • Day at leisure in Puerto Varas

This is your day at leisure in Puerto Varas, the gateway city to the Chilean Lake District, which faces the great Osorno Volcano and is better known as the “City of Roses”.

This beautiful lakeside, first inhabited by Germans, has kept most of its traditional architecture; wooden houses, alerce trees, and German Jesuit churches can be seen all over the place, as well as rose bushes covering every street.

The gastronomy of Puerto Varas is something to savor while staying in this city. Taste the “Kuchen” pie, a traditional dish of the first German immigrants, the homemade marmalades (Puerto Varas is famous for their blueberry production!), and the best-smoked salmon fish.

  • What to do on your day at leisure in Puerto Varas?

Puerto Varas offers a wide variety of adventure outings, from hikes in the Llanquihue Reserve to kayaking in Petroué River, and our favorite, a visit to the Osorno Volcano sky center. Enjoy a warm coffee while admiring the magnificent Osorno Volcano Summit, and visit a famous brewery on your way back. Contact us to add this optional day tour to your travel itinerary!

Today we’ll pick you up really early at your hotel to take you to the first stop of this 10-hour adventurous trip: Milodon Cave. This natural monument, located 15 miles north of town, is composed of three caverns and a rocky conglomerate called Silla del Diablo (Devil’s Chair), due to its chair-like shape.

Before getting to the cave, we will pass by La Silla del Diablo and learn about its mysterious legend…a story told by the oldest man in Patagonia who believed that the Devil appeared to those who came to look for him on dark nights.

We’ll keep on traveling to Torres del Paine National Park, and on the way, you’ll get to see Sofia Lagoon, Prat Range, Porteño Lake, and the stunning Grey Lake viewpoint. Continue Exploring Chilean and Argentine Patagonia - El Calafate

calafate-nature-wildlife

  • Bus to El Calafate – Day at leisure

Today, get prepared to take a 5-hour bus ride to El Calafate. To get to the bus station, a taxi will cost you roughly $6/8 USD. We highly recommend being ready half an hour before the departure time at the bus terminal. Once you arrive at the El Calafate bus station, you will go to your hotel.

El Calafate is the starting point for adventure travelers who desire to unearth the most spellbinding natural wonders of Patagonia, like the Perito Moreno Glacier, the only glacier in the world that’s still advancing. Though it’s not the only glacier in the area, it’s the one that made the city of El Calafate famous worldwide.

  • Visit Laguna Nimez

If you want to know more about El Calafate, look to our Calafate Travel Guide for more practical information about the city. Our advice: If you feel like exploring a bit alone, go on the half-a-mile hike to Laguna Nimez for a beautiful Patagonian sunset.

Perito Moreno Glacier Tour

El-Calafate-Perito-Moreno-Glacier-Walkways

  • Perito Moreno Glacier tour, meet the icy giant of Patagonia

During the morning, we will pick you up from your hotel and drive you to Glaciers National Park to enjoy the 6-hour Perito Moreno Glacier tour.   You will travel about 25 miles from El Calafate to the park, enjoying the views of the Patagonian steppe. Once inside the park, you will take walkways to explore the different viewpoints, and you’ll feel unbelievably close to Perito Moreno Glacier. If you’re lucky, you may even get to see a piece of ice break off and fall from the glacier wall, sinking forever into the lake below.

Over the course of about one hour, a bilingual guide will provide you with all the information you might want to know…and things you may have never thought about. After this visit, you will take a boat ride that will bring you close enough to fully appreciate the 262-foot ice walls of Perito Moreno! You’ll never feel closer to this gigantic and impressive natural masterpiece. At the end of the day, we will drive you back to your hotel.

  • Walk over the Big Ice

Have you ever imagined walking across the surface of a glacier? Well, this is your chance! The Mini Trekking tour will allow you to trek on Perito Moreno Glacier… This is one of our favorite Patagonia outings; we’re sure you won’t regret it.  This is an optional excursion you can add to this day.

Day at Leisure - El Calafate

torres-del-paine-horses

  • Optional tour to a Patagonian ranch

El Calafate has much more to offer than just its magnificent glaciers… we recommend that you complete this 2-week hiking trip to Patagonia by taking a day tour to immerse yourself in the rural culture of Patagonia.

Inside Glaciers National Park, at the end of National Route 15 and after a 1 hr 30 min drive over a rubble road, sits one of the oldest and most traditional Patagonian ranches in the area. It’s the only ranch that continues to maintain sheep and Hereford cattle breeding as its main occupation. You can take a day trip to visit its 30,000 acres of land, learn about its history, and witness a sheep-shearing demonstration and horse training. At the end of the day, a grilled lamb will await, sizzling on its traditional Patagonian rotisserie.

If you would like to add on this tour for your free day, just let your travel advisor know.

Ushuaia is a small town, really easy to get around on foot. The Yamanas, its first inhabitants, called it Ushuaia which means “protected bay” in their language. It was officially incorporated into the Republic of Argentina in 1884, and it soon became a penal colony, in order to establish a permanent Argentine settlement.

Our recommended activities in Ushuaia:

  • Visit one of its curious museums—The Thematic Gallery of the “Historia Fueguina” to see the more than 120 character life-size figures that will tell you all about the history of Ushuaia, or unearth the story of the scariest and dangerous criminals at the Prison Museum.
  • Visit the different restaurants in town, Ushuaia is the best place to eat seafood in Argentina. —The word you shouldn’t forget is centolla (king crab!). You can try the finger-licking Blake Hake too.

ushuaia-trekking-canoeing-national-park-9

  • Discover Tierra del Fuego National Park wildlands

Today we’ll pick you up from your hotel to start a 10-hour, moderate-difficulty, adventure in Tierra del Fuego National Park, just 7.4 miles away from the city and bordering the shore of the famous Beagle Channel.

Upon arrival at Ensenada Bay, you will have time to enjoy the view over the Beagle Channel before you start hiking along the coast. Four miles of trail await you, where you’ll discover native flora, wild fauna, and the remains left by the Yamanas, the native inhabitants of the area. After this 3-hour hike, you will reach Lake Roca, where lunch will be served.

After a full homemade picnic, you will start the second part of this adventure. Take your oar and plunge into a 1hr 30 min paddling trip along the Lapataia River (only available for children over 5 years old). Make it all the way to Lapataia Bay, where the Panamerican Highway and National Route 3 end at an awe-inspiring landscape.

After discovering the unique vastness of this stunning setting, we’ll take you back to your hotel to rest and enjoy another Patagonian evening.

Beagle Channel Cruise - Travel Back to Buenos Aires

ushuaia-beagle-channel

  • Tour Ushuaia’s famous islands while sailing the Beagle Channel

In 1833 Charles Darwin sailed the Beagle Channel and found something extraordinary. Today it’s your turn: become another explorer of this channel, primitively named Onashaga Channel since the Onas were its first discoverers.

Make your way to the tourist pier (located downtown) to embark on a 4-hour Beagle Channel navigation in a fully equipped boat with a capacity for up to 26 people. With Argentina on your left and Chile on your right, you’ll sail this natural border until you reach the iconic Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse, which is still in operation.

On the way, enjoy uplifting panoramic views of Ushuaia Bay, crowned by the Martial Glacier’s diverse marine wildlife, such as cormorants (flying birds, closely related to penguins) and fur seals. Hop off on Bridges Island to explore its vegetation, and visit the archeological remains of the Yamanas (the native inhabitants) accompanied by a specialized bilingual guide.

During the trip, enjoy bottomless hot cocoa and cookies, or try the maté (loose herbal tea), which is every Argentinian’s favorite drink. Once we get back to the port, you can make your way back to your hotel or stop in a local cafe or brewery to enjoy an amber craft beer paired with a traditional Patagonian appetizer.

  • Transfer from your hotel to Ushuaia airport / Transfer to your hotel in Buenos Aires

At the appropriate time, we’ll pick you up from your hotel and take you to the airport for your flight to Buenos Aires. Here is where your Patagonia adventure trip ends We’ll welcome you to the Buenos Aires airport, and drive you to your hotel to spend your last evening in the city.

Day at Leisure - Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires - Downtown (18)

  • Optional tours – Full-day visit to a ranch

There are still some estancias (ranches) that preserve the gaucho traditions, located in picturesque towns within Buenos Aires’ province. One of the most alluring estancias is El Ombú de Areco, a colonial-style working ranch built in 1880 that is located in the town of San Antonio de Areco, where gaucho traditions are ever-present.

Today, we’ll pick you up at your hotel to begin a 9-hour visit to this time-honored ranch. Learn about the gaucho culture and traditions, strolling around the beautiful old streets, museums, and ancient pulperías (grocery stores) in San Antonio de Areco before heading to El Ombú.

Once you’re in the estancia, enjoy a typical asado (barbecue) before either a horseback ride in nature or a relaxing bike ride. For those who like to take things slow while on vacation, there is a peaceful swimming pool (only available in summer) and many sunny relaxation areas where you can take a siesta (an afternoon nap). At the end of the day, we’ll take you back to your hotel in Buenos Aires.

If you want to add this optional tour just contact your travel agent.

Choosing the best city to start your Patagonia trip depends on your specific interests and the regions you plan to explore. Two common starting points for Patagonia trips are El Calafate in Argentina and Punta Arenas in Chile.  El Calafate (Argentina) is i deal if you want to explore the famous Perito Moreno Glacier. Also, is c lose to El Chaltén, a popular trekking destination with stunning views of Mount Fitz Roy.

Punta Arenas (Chile) is c onvenient for exploring the southern part of Patagonia, including Torres del Paine National Park. Punta Arenas o ffers a mix of cultural attractions and access to Magdalena Island for penguin colonies. Also in Chile, Puerto Natales is a gateway to Torres del Paine National Park, with good access to trekking and outdoor activities. It p rovides a more relaxed atmosphere compared to larger cities like Punta Arenas.

Consider the logistics of your journey, including transportation options, border crossings, and the attractions that align with your preferences when deciding the best city to begin your Patagonia adventure.

Yes, Puerto Natales offers great experiences to do in the city or its surroundings. The best tours are:

  • Boat Tours: Take a boat tour to experience the stunning scenery of the fjords and glaciers in the Ultima Esperanza Sound. Some tours may also include visits to Balmaceda and Serrano Glaciers.
  • Visit Municipal Historical Museum: Learn about the history and culture of Puerto Natales at the Municipal Historical Museum. The museum displays exhibits on the region’s indigenous people, early settlers, and maritime history.

Yes, you typically need a valid passport to enter Chile from Argentina, including the Chilean Patagonia region. Both Argentina and Chile are separate countries, and there are border controls between them. When crossing the border, you will be required to present your passport and may also need to complete immigration and customs procedures.

It’s important to check the specific entry requirements and visa regulations based on your nationality, as they can vary. Always refer to official government sources or consult with the relevant consulates or embassies for the most up-to-date and accurate information before planning your trip.

Argentina and Chile do not have the same currency. Argentina uses the Argentine Peso (ARS), while Chile uses the Chilean Peso (CLP). It’s important to note that exchange rates can fluctuate, so it’s advisable to check the current rates and have local currency on hand or make the necessary currency exchanges before traveling between these two countries. Additionally, border regions may accept both currencies, but it’s always a good idea to confirm the accepted currencies at your specific travel destinations.

Yes, Bariloche is renowned for its excellent gastronomy. The city, located in the Argentine Patagonia, offers a diverse culinary scene that reflects a blend of Argentine and European influences. Chocolate and Craft Beer are the main favorites that tourists choose eat . Also,  due to the significant European influence in Bariloche, you’ll find Swiss and German-inspired dishes, such as fondue and schnitzel, in some restaurants.

Whether you’re exploring the city center or venturing into the surrounding areas, Bariloche offers a delightful culinary experience. Be sure to try some of the local specialties, and consider visiting the city’s renowned chocolate shops for a sweet treat.

Torres del Paine National Park in Chile is known for its diverse and pristine ecosystems, providing a habitat for a variety of wildlife species. Some of the notable wild animals you may encounter in Torres del Paine include Guanacos, Pumas, Andean Condors. Foxes, Southern Elephant Seals

Remember that wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, as animals roam freely in their natural habitats. It’s important to observe wildlife from a safe distance and respect their natural behaviors. Hiring a knowledgeable guide can enhance your chances of spotting wildlife and provide valuable information about the park’s ecosystems.

I wanted to express our gratitude for your exceptional assistance in planning our recent trip to Argentina and Chile. The experience exceeded all expectations, and we are incredibly thankful for your recommendations that played a significant role in creating lasting memories for our family.

Here are some highlights from our trip that we wanted to share: Glacial trek, Aldebaran Hotel - a unanimous favorite for its post-trek relaxation and rejuvenating massages, El Chalten hikes and the New Year's Eve dinner

We had an incredible journey, and your contributions made it truly special.

Thank you once again for your excellent planning and support. We look forward to working with you in the future.

Best regards

My brother and I had a fantastic time in Patagonia and are so grateful for everything you did to make this such an amazing trip!! The itinerary you put together for us was perfect and we especially enjoyed the Laguna de los tres hike and big ice trek on the Perito Moreno glacier. Thank you so much for squeezing us into all the activities and accommodations. We are already looking forward to coming back and I've attached a few pictures of us :).

The trip was absolutely fantastic. We had such a great time! The guides were all knowledgeable and enthusiastic and a lot of fun to spend the days with. I want to give personal recognition to the tours/groups in Buenos Aires, El Calafate, Puerto Madryn, Peninsula Valdes, and the jeep tour on day 1 of Rio de Janeiro. Thank you for your hard work and support for setting up this trip. The Vamos app is also fantastic and really helped throughout the trip!

I hope to keep in touch for any future trips!

Gracias y saludos a todos!

All very good I used you with my 14 year old in 2017. It is more money but there were a number of times we were impressed how on top of things your team and organization were. We forgot we locked up our money and passports in a hotel safe. Calmy people were contacted and a remedy was found. There was a definite feeling that you all were there, ready to help or to juist make sure things were going well. Really glad we asked to go to the coast; Valparaiso, Isla Negra and Nerudas house. Really no need to see Viña del Mar, too much hotel and vacationer feeling there, would have preferred something additional in Valparaiso. Peulla hotel Natura was wonderful, could have spent another night there, and done more than a small walk in that area. Glad we took the bus over the Andes and the lake crossing. Thanks much. All four of us loved it.

The most remarkable aspect of the expedition was, undoubtedly, the breathtaking wildlife. The landscapes were a sanctuary to an array of unique creatures. Majestic whales gracefully breached the icy waters, while adorable penguins waddled along the shores, seemingly unfazed by our presence. Observing these creatures in their natural habitat was an experience that words cannot fully capture. It's a memory that will forever be etched in my mind.

the service on the cruise was exceptional. The crew’s knowledge and passion for the region were evident in their informative lectures and their willingness to share their expertise. They ensured our safety while also going above and beyond to make our journey comfortable and memorable.

This cruise to Antarctica was an incredible expedition. Adventure, natural beauty, and wildlife encounters were the main stars. Luckily we enjoyed a smooth sail through the Drake Passage, so we could admire the astounding wildlife, and the outstanding service made this journey a once-in-a-lifetime experience that exceeded all expectations. If you seek an adventure that stirs the soul and leaves an indelible mark, an Antarctic cruise is an absolute must.

The opportunity to step foot on the untouched Antarctica was a privilege. The glaciers, the icy terrain, and the absolute stillness were both humbling and invigorating. Exploring via zodiac boats allowed us to get up close to the landscape and wildlife, providing an intimate experience of this raw, unspoiled wilderness. Thanks to every member of the crew that made this adventure an unforgettable experience!

Working with Say Hueque was great.

Everyone at the company was responsive and thoughtful, even when I sent that "emergency" message they solved my problem very fast . When I'm traveling in a foreign country, it's important to me to know that there's someone I can contact that will help me figure things out. I appreciated Say Hueque's service.

Thank you again for all of the help in planning, specially Sol and Andrea.

We had a wonderful time in the desert! If I ever plan to go to Argentina or Chile in the future, I'll be sure to contact you.

I specially want to thank Antonella and Lucia for their hard work and dedication towards our very successful holiday. Your dedication and eye to detail was very much appreciated.

TRAVELLING TO Patagonia

Why visit Patagonia? Located at the southern end of South America, Patagonia is a region shared by Argentina and Chile . From snow-capped mountains to picturesque fjords, stunning lakes and impressive volcanoes, a Patagonia tour really has it all.

While active holidaymakers will be able to give their hiking boots a good work out trekking or horse riding through Torres Del Paine, biking through Valdez Peninsula or skiing down the slopes of Tierra del Fuego, there is also plenty to do for the more slow-paced traveller.

Staring at the magnificent views, cruising the Fjords of Chile, or visiting one of the many wineries are just some of the equally exciting but less exertive activities to be enjoyed on a tour across the dramatic, windswept settings of Patagonia.

How to get there? Access has never been easier for Australians with three top-ranked airlines (LATAM, Air New Zealand and Qantas) providing regularly scheduled services to Santiago and Buenos Aires.

Want Patagonia to Yourself?

Caleta Tortel –The Mysterious Heart of Chilean Patagonia

Caleta Tortel is one of the most unique villages you could visit in South America.

The Fascinating History of Patagonia

A region of South America inhabited for thousands of years, Patagonia has endured – and continues to boast – a thoroughly fascinating history.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1 . do i need a visa to travel to patagonia.

If travelling to the Chilean part of Patagonia, a pre-arranged visa is not required for citizens of the following countries: Australia, United Kingdom, United States, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, European Union and South Africa.

For other nationalities please visit the website of the relevant consulate.

Australian citizens must pay a "reciprocity fee" to enter Chile. This is not a visa, since a visa is not required for visitors from these countries. It is a fee based upon the fees that Chilean citizens pay for visas to Australia. The fee is subject to change but can be paid on arrival in US$ cash or by credit card.

If travelling to the Argentinian side of Patagonia, a pre-arranged visa is not required to enter Argentina for citizens of the following countries: Australia, United Kingdom, United States, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, European Union and South Africa.

Australian, Canadian and USA citizens must pay a "reciprocity fee" to enter Argentina. This is not a visa, since a visa is not required for visitors from these countries. It is a fee based on the fees that Argentinean citizens pay for visas to these countries. The fee is subject to change but must be paid in advance online. For US citizens, the reciprocity fee allows multiple entries into Argentina for 10 years in accordance with US visa reciprocity. For Australian citizens, the reciprocity fee is valid for multiple entries into Argentina within a period of one year from the date of first entry.

British and European Union passport holders are exempt from Reciprocity Fees.

Due to rules and regulations constantly changing we recommend you visit the relevant country government websites for up to date information on visa and entry requirements. We are constantly updating our Travellers Guides with information, but it is still recommended to double check current advice.

2 . How long do I need to travel to Patagonia?

You could spend anything from a few days to a few weeks on your Patagonia travels, depending on whether you plan to explore both the Chilean and Argentinian sides including the Lake District, central Patagonia and the South Patagonia Ice Fields, or just focus on one experience such as Torres del Paine National Park. Chimu Adventures offers itineraries to suit every time frame.

3 . How much should I budget for daily in Patagonia?

Our Patagonia tours include breakfast daily and many other meals may also be included in your itinerary. As a rough guide for additional spending money based on having moderately-priced lunches and dinners (if not included) and to cover drinks and tips, we suggest a budget of US$35-50 per day per person.

4 . Do I need to get vaccinations for Patagonia?

Although no specific vaccinations are required for Patagonia travel and no proof of any vaccination is required to enter Chile or Argentina, we recommend that you visit your doctor or a traveller’s medical centre for current information specific to those places that you will be travelling through.

As a general guide we recommend the following:

·         Yellow Fever - especially if also travelling to Easter Island from an infected area or also travelling through northern Argentina

·         Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR)

·         Hepatitis - Both A and B (twinrix)

·         Typhoid

·         Diphtheria

·         Cholera

·         Rabies

·         Tetanus

Depending on your travel itinerary you may be required to produce proof of Yellow Fever vaccination when returning to Australia from parts of Argentina.

5 . What money do they use in Patagonia?

Patagonia is shared by Chile and Argentina. On the Chilean side of Patagonia, the unit of currency in Chile is the Chilean Peso (CLP). On the Argentinean side, the unit of currency is the Argentinean Peso (ARS). Please check websites such as www.oanda.com or www.xe.com for up to date exchange rates prior to your departure.

6 . What kind of power adaptor plug do I need in Patagonia?

In Argentina and Chile the standard voltage is 220V and standard frequency is 50Hz. Power sockets are of types C and I in Argentina and of types C and L in Chile.

Please visit the below link for more information: http://electricaloutlet.org/

7 . What language do they speak in Patagonia?

Spanish is the official language of both Chile and Argentina.

8 . What should I pack when visiting Patagonia?

What you need to pack will depend on the Patagonia tour that you are taking and the activities that you plan to include, as well as the time of year you are travelling. Except for winter sports, most people travel to Patagonia during the summer months (November to March). Even during these months, there can be extreme variations in climate. Days can range from sunny with temperatures in the 20’s (°C), to rain, hail and even snow and so you need to be prepared for all possibilities. Night temperatures often drop down to around 4-5°C.

When trekking, temperatures at the highest elevations can be as low as -5°C at night. Generally trek temperatures are 4-8°C at night and 15-20°C during the day. Wind is one of the constant factors in Patagonia and can manifest itself in the form of a constant breeze or a strong gale.

If you are on a hotel or lodge based tour then items such as sleeping bags are not necessary. If your tour involves trekking where you will be staying in refugios or camping, then you will need to pack a good quality sleeping bag and clothes suitable for the possible climatic variations.

For a more detailed packing list, please refer to our Patagonia Information Sheet

9 . Do I need to be fit to go to Patagonia?

The level of fitness needed will depend on the Patagonia tour that you choose to take in terms of places to be visited and the types of activities to be included in your itinerary. Patagonia offers great opportunities for outdoor activities that range from hiking and trekking to rock climbing, skiing, white water rafting, horse riding and ice climbing. The majority of the best treks are to be found in the National Parks and the Chilean Lake District where the trails range from easy to difficult.

Chimu Adventures offers many different tours to Patagonia, and whatever your level of fitness we can tailor-make an itinerary that will allow you to discover the stunning scenery of Patagonia.

10 . Is it safe to travel to Patagonia?

Yes Patagonia is a very safe part of South America. Hygiene standards are high in Patagonia and even though it is an area that is remote with much untamed wilderness, it is still a safe place as long as you take the right precautions and make the right preparations, especially if trekking.

Map for the Patagonia Adventure: Chile & Argentina tour

Sit back, relax, and unwind on your overnight flight to Santiago, Chile—the capital city of the country, and your base from which you’ll enter the Patagonia Region. Hope you packed a travel pillow for the plane, because you are in for plenty of neck craning in awe of the giant mountains on this trip.

Welcome to Chile! Santiago is an incredible, vibrant city that looks like someone dropped the world’s newest skyscrapers next to the most ornate old churches and placed the stunning Andes Mountains behind it all. Grab a pisco sour (the national alcoholic beverage) and take it all in.

In the evening, enjoy a Welcome Dinner of local cuisine and drinks with fellow travelers at an authentic local spot. Afterwards, you’re free to take the party elsewhere!

Today's highlights:

  • Land at the airport and meet a waiting EF representative.
  • Transfer to your hotel to check in and check out your room.
  • Get familiar with the area around your hotel with an introductory walk with your Tour Director.

Things are going south today (don’t worry it’s a good thing). Fly way down the country to Punta Arenas, one of the furthest south large cities anywhere in the world.

  • Fly just about to the bottom of the Earth from Santiago to Punta Arenas.

Great things often come in small packages. Case in point: Puerto Natales. Full of charming shops and craft breweries, this little port town is the gateway to Torres del Paine National Park.

  • Board the bus with your group from Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales—keep an eye out for sheep en route.
  • Arrive in Puerto Natales and enjoy some time getting acquainted with the rustic beauty of Patagonian civilization before you go off-the-grid.

Funky mountains and breathtaking glaciers galore are on the menu today, and friend, it is going to be a feast. You’re going to Chile’s Patagonian pride and joy: Torres del Paine National Park. The park is named after the three spiky granite towers that you simply can’t miss. Get ready—this is what you came here for.

  • Prepare for your mind to be melted and your camera roll to be filled on a full day guided tour of the rugged must-sees of Torres del Paine.
  • See firsthand how Lago del Toro got its name, no bull.
  • Spot icebergs in glacial Grey Lake.
  • See a shade of blue you didn’t know existed at Lake Pehoé.
  • Fuel up with an included lunch.
  • Stop at Cueva del Milodón en route back to Puerto Natales to see the caves that once housed extinct giant sloths 10,000+ years ago and cave people 8,000 years ago.

Cross the border into Argentina today: land of steak, soccer, and gauchos. El Calafate is a little town of warm vibes and close proximity to glaciers. Hop your private bus to El Calafate in the morning and get ready to tango with Argentina.

  • Cross another country off your list as you travel from Chile to Argentina.
  • Arrive in El Calafate and take advantage of a free afternoon getting acquainted with the town.

Free time suggestions

Avenida del Libertor San Martín: The main shopping drag of El Calafate has something for everyone. Wander in and out of the artisan souvenir shops, sample craft beers, or chow down on the famous Patagonian lamb dishes.

Laguna Nimez : Can’t wait for more nature? Take a short walk to Laguna Nimez—a nature reserve in town that over 80 species of bird, including flamingos, call home.

Two things you can always count on: steak tastes better with a glass of Argentinean malbec wine, and El Perito Moreno Glacier won’t shrink anytime soon. That’s right, despite climate change speeding up the melting of most glaciers, El Perito Moreno remains inexplicably strong. Today is all about hiking this resilient glacial king.

  • Trek one of the world’s most beautiful glaciers with expert guides.
  • Discover lagoons & geological oddities on a full day hike of El Perito Moreno.
  • Wash down a day’s work with a well-earned glass of whiskey served over glacier ice.

Hey kid, wanna see the Andes Mountains? You’re in luck. El Chaltén is a little Andean mountain village that packs a lot of beauty into a small area. Like a lot a lot. And it’s all contained within your next stop: Argentina’s Glacier National Park.

Please note: All outdoor and hiking activities may be adjusted on tour due to local conditions, such as weather or trail closures.

  • Drive by the mind-blowing Andes Mountains en route to El Chaltén within Glacier National Park.
  • Relax and recover in El Chaltén.

You didn’t come to Patagonia to not go big on a full-day hike, did you? Today you’ll get up close and personal trekking to the base of the nutso 11,000 foot high granite tower they call Mt. Fitz Roy around here. Get stoked, you’re gonna do great.

Distance: 12 miles

Elevation: 2,959 feet

Farewell Dinner Share some last laughs (and maybe shed a few tears) at an included farewell dinner with the group. You’re not leaving tonight—but this is your last dinner all together with your new travel family.

  • Head out bright and early for your guided hike to Mt. Fitz Roy.
  • Check out sweeping views of the De Las Vueltas River Valley as you ascend.
  • Climb through scrub forest and rocky wilderness up toward Mt. Fitz Roy.
  • Finish the hike at the foot of the mountain, where views of the turquoise Laguna De Los Tres reward your effort.
  • Return to El Chaltén for some much needed relaxation.

By now your legs are surely sore and your heart is surely full. Time to hit the big city for a little Latin American culture. You’re going to Buenos Aires: the colorful megapolis that gave us the tango dance, the current Pope, and your next travel crush of a city.

  • Board your flight from El Calafate to Buenos Aires and fly over the very same mountains you’ve been trekking.
  • Arrive in Buenos Aires and get to know the city with your Tour Director.

So this is it: the final day of your Patagonia adventure. The hiking blisters will fade, but the memories and new friendships will last a lifetime. Take one final day to pop in and out of markets, grab that last souvenir, and raise a toast to your group before you fly home tonight.

Milonga : For those of you just as excited to get some use out of your dancing shoes as your hiking boots, hit up a milonga. Simply put, it’s a place where you can tango dance. Let’s see what you’ve got!

Café Tortoni: Opened in 1858, this regal café is one of the oldest in Argentina, and a reliably excellent place for a café con leche and some top-notch people watching.

Your next destination awaits—home, and you’ll arrive there in the late morning or early afternoon after your overnight flight.
