Is anyone else having a problem with the keyboard shortcuts in Safari not working after a short period time of using the browser? For some reason my keyboard shortcuts stop working after a while. Nothing I don't have any problems with anything else, just the keyboard shortcuts. A restart of the browser fixes it. Is anyone else seeing this?

I think it may have been a byproduct of a 1password update. It was updated again and the problem seems to have gone away.

No, all of the shortcuts didn't work. Copy, paste, etc. It was very frustrating, but I haven't seen the problem since the most recent beta update of 1password. Thats my best guess about the problem.

Same problem... I'm having the exact same problem with Safari -- all command-key enabled shortcuts stop functioning after a short time. Only restarting Safari solves the problem. I do not use 1Password.

Paste Without Formatting won't work safari

I am able to use the "Paste Without Formatting" option in every browser except Safari. In Safari, neither the keyboard shortcut (Shift + Cmd + V) or menu>paste without formatting works. When I right-click, the option to paste (Cmd + V) is there, but paste without formatting is greyed out, along with several other options. Is this something that can be fixed, or is this just safari?

  • doesn't work for me either, probably safari has no option to pass the clipboard to the function to remove the formatting, as the right click is a page (google docs) functionality and not the browsers - you should post it to google help and et us know –  Zina May 28, 2020 at 22:25
  • @Zina Most likely google already knows about this problem, because the menu button doesn't grey itself out. However, I think I still will contact them to try and get more information on the problem. –  CircuitSacul May 28, 2020 at 22:48
  • That is not a Safari menu. It doesn't even look vaguely like any Mac menu. Safari doesn't have a 'Paste without formatting' option at all & neither do most Mac apps, they have a 'paste & match style' instead, cmd/shift/opt/V. i.stack.imgur.com/xOzZa.png –  Tetsujin May 29, 2020 at 9:49
  • @Tetsujin "Right-Click Menu". The menu that pops up when you right click on google docs –  CircuitSacul May 29, 2020 at 14:14
  • Then it's a Google Docs issue, that's not a Mac menu at all. –  Tetsujin May 29, 2020 at 15:21

Try Cmd + Option + Shift + V its working for me

  • If you read the comment thread you'll find the question itself was invalid. It's not a Safari issue, it's a Google Docs issue. –  Tetsujin Jan 3, 2021 at 16:17
  • Yeah you are right @Tetsujin. But I tried with the shortcut which I mentioned I was able to paste without formatting. –  Bijjala Naga Nikhil Jan 4, 2021 at 17:31
  • I don't use G.Docs to be able to test, I'm afraid. My initial involvement in the question sprung from the posted image looking very un-Mac-like, nothing more really ;) I think I saw your answer in a review queue & just realised it was one I'd been involved in some while back. –  Tetsujin Jan 4, 2021 at 17:34
  • @Tetsujin the popup menu is the GDoc popup menu, not the Mac popup menu. –  CircuitSacul Jan 6, 2021 at 23:42
  • It worked! But this is such a strange key combination lol, I can't enter it using only one hand –  Hykilpikonna Apr 12, 2021 at 3:17

This happens because Safari and Google Doc Shortcuts are clashing with one another. We cannot change Google Doc Shortcuts but we can change Safaris.

Just go to system preferences, then select keyboard, go to shortcuts then go to app shortcuts on the left hand side.

Once you've done that, click the plus button at the bottom and it should open another window, in that window, change the Application from all apps to safari, then add the following text: Paste and Match Style in the menu Title. (I am taking this command from when you click edit on Safari in the top menu.

Enter the shortcut as Command Shift V

For an easy guide, I have attached an image:

  • Huge thanks, that's exactly what I was facing with Google Docs, and now pasting without formatting works with just Cmd+Shift+V –  Ilya Kushlianski Mar 18, 2023 at 12:31

Create a custom keyboard shortcut for Safari only that maps 'Paste and Match Style' to 'CMD-SHIFT-V' and you will have plain text pasting in Google Sheets, provided the target is plain text. Google Docs works too. You may have to re-launch Safari.

Thanks for sharing

Try command + [ for back command + ] for forward

Thank you very much.

Look inside the Safari.app folder. There’s a file called: Shortcuts.html

file:///Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Shortcuts.html

Great to make a Bookmark of, and to keep all the shortcuts close. :)

A four finger swipe gives you the last program opened consecutively.

If you use several web browsers, it may be helpful to standardize your keyboard commands across all applications using System Preferences. I set “Switch to Next/Previous Tab” to command+option+left/right arrow. Also, I used the System Preferences pane “BetterTouchTool” to perform those actions with three-finger left/right swipes.

It’s one finger swipe for go forward/back. Two finger swipe makes you go to dashboard or change despktop/full screen app.

This depends on input method and also on your settings. It can be a one finger swipe, two finger swipe or even a three finger swipe.

Hide or Show Toolbar – Command+i

Hide or Show Toolbar – Command+| (vertical divider)

Mail Current Page – Command+i (mails contents)

Hide or Show Toolbar does not work.

Every page I go to has this shortcut listed and it doesn’t. work.

The two finger dragging direction is counter-intuitive. Just as dragging up a page in Lion pulls the page up, I’d prefer to drag the page from left to right to pull in the previous page.

Navigate Found Items Forward – Return

Also, Command + G

Look up in dictionary ctrl + command + d when hovering a word with the cursor.

the three-finger tap can be used for this as well.

That’s great. Thanks!

Great list but Safari has some features I can’t stand right now, mainly the automatic refresh thing and other iOS inspired elements that make it difficult to use. I’m using Chrome for the time being since Firefox crapped the bed and never recovered from it’s mishap. Hopefully Apple fixes Safari, I like it a lot.

Yes the fact that Safari refreshes the page every time you hit the back button is very annoying. I don’t see any benefit in it either and it means you download the page contents again unnecessarily.

I Like Chrome .

25 Useful Safari Keyboard Shortcuts You Should Know

Check out 25 Useful Safari Keyboard Shortcuts You Should Know at YouTube for closed captioning and more options.

Comments: 6 Responses to “25 Useful Safari Keyboard Shortcuts You Should Know”

I'm curious if you know a reason why SEARCH RESULTS SNAPBACK is never available to me. I tried reversing the option in Safari/Prefs/er uh Settings/General: I use Tab Layout: Separate, I always show website titles in tabs and I open pages in tabs instead of windows automatically. Changing that made no difference but I can't think of what else I could have messed up, er uh, changed to make this command unavailable. Not a critical issue--just curious.

brad: Make sure you use the address field to search, not a web page (like Google's home page). Don't skip the search results page as you must end up at a search results page for this to work. If you choose one of the results from the drop-down then you go right to the result.

Thanks! I’m using the "Address and Search" field of the toolbar. I open a new blank window, search a term there, open a resulting link, then a link within that page and a link within that page and SEARCH RESULTS SNAPBACK always remains grayed out. I find my ways...

brad: Don't open the "resulting link." Type your search term and then press Return to go to the search page. Unless you see Google's search page with the results first, and then select a result on that page, it won't work. There's nothing to "snap back" to if you don't visit the search results page.

on a blank page, in the "Address and Search" field, I enter the term. The result is Google’s page with all the results. I choose one of those links and then burrow down into deeper and deeper links but never does SEARCH RESULTS SNAPBACK become available. UNTIL: I started to record my keystrokes & mac’s reactions so I could show you and after the first subsequent link, the SEARCH RESULTS SNAPBACK became available just like it’s supposed to!

It’s as if starting the record/capture process changed something because after shutting down the recording, it still works like a charm. I’m guessing nothing happened like I said and this was all a hallucination. I hope you didn’t get too consternated! After all this, I’m going to make damn sure I find a reason to use it! LOL!

Solution #1. Check if the keyboard Hardware is working

Let’s start with basic solutions. The first thing you need to do is check the keyboard hardware. If you are using Magic or an external keyboard, try plugging the keyboard into a USB port if any key is unresponsive (Not Charged Keyboard or Dead Keyboard).

Further, if you’re facing an issue with a specific key, try using another keyboard with your Mac and press  Control + Command + Space  to cross-verify the problem. Alternatively, you can also try using the problematic keyboard with another Mac. If you find the emoji keyboard shortcut working correctly, the issue may be with your macOS. This will help you to identify whether the problem lies with the keyboard or macOS.

Open Emoji Keyboard on Mac Using Keyboard Shortcut

If the problem is with keyboard hardware, ensure to clean the keyboard properly. That’s because specs of debris and dirt might accumulate below the keyboard keys. However, if cleaning isn’t helping you, then it is better to take the help of an Apple Technician.

Solution #2. Restart Mac computer

If the problem is with macOS, before hindering the macOS settings, try restarting the Mac computer. Usually, a simple restart lets out various issues with Mac, including the keyboard shortcut by clearing the bugs present in the macOS memory. To restart, click on the Apple Logo Menu > Restart… > Restart.

Further, if a normal restart isn’t working, you must try force-restarting the Mac. To do so, press the Control + Command + Power Button until your Mac shuts down.

Solution #3. Disable Sticky Keys

Sticky keys on Mac changes the behavior of macOS Shortcut. For instance, instead of pressing Control + Command + Space to access the emoji menu, you need to press Command and then press Control and then Space ( one at a time together ) to access settings. This feature will help the user who has a problem using a keyboard shortcut. Thus, if you have this setting enabled on your Mac, turn it off by following the steps below.

Step 1 : Select the  Apple Menu  located at the top left corner of the Mac screen and Select  System Settings from the menu.

Open Apple Logo Select System Setting On Mac

Step 2 : Choose  Accessibility  from the left pane and Click on  Keyboard  from the right side.

Choose Accessibility Click Keyboard On Mac

Step 3 : On the next screen, make sure the toggle next to the  Sticky Key  is turned off.

Disable Sticky Key On Mac

Once you turn it off, try pressing the emoji keyboard shortcut on Mac. If it’s not working, move forward to the following solution.

Solution #4. Have you disable Globe Key?

There is a possibility that you might have accidentally or intentionally turned off the Globe key on your Mac running the latest macOS. Thus, we suggest enabling it on your Mac by following the steps below.

Step 1 : Select the  Apple Menu  from the top left corner of your Mac and Select  System Settings .

Open Apple Logo Select System Setting On Mac

Choose Keyboard Tap Keyboard Shortcut On Mac

Step 3 : Click on the  Modifier Key  from the left side. Select drop-down next to  Globe Key  and choose  Globe Key . To save changes, select  Done.

Select Modifier Key Click on Globe Key Tap Done On Mac

Solution #5. Reset Modifier Keys to default

If none of the above solutions worked, try resetting the modifier keys to default. There are chances that you might have accidentally configured the modifier key for a different task from what it actually needs to be. Luckily, you can restore the modifier key to default and fix the emoji shortcut key not working on Mac.

Step 1 : Select the  Apple Menu  from the left top corner of the Mac screen. Choose  System Settings .

Open Apple Logo Select System Setting On Mac

Step 2 : Click on  Keyboard  from the left pane. Then, Choose  Keyboard Shortcuts from the right side.

Select keyboard tap Keyboard Shortcut On Mac

Step 3 : Select  Modifier Key  from the left pane. Click on the  Restore Default Button . At last, click on  Done .

Choose Modifier Key Tap Restore Default Key Click Done On Mac

Solution #6. Make sure your Magic keyboard is charged

Having a low charge on Magic keyboard can often be a reason for an unresponsive keyboard, which eventually leads to confusion about the emoji keyboard shortcut not working on Mac. Therefore, we suggest checking the battery level of your Magic keyboard. Or else connect the keyboard using the lighting to the USB-C cable .

Solution #7. Check USB Connection

If you’re using a third-party keyboard with your Mac, it is suggested to check the USB connection on both sides. Ensure that the USB cable is connected accurately on both sides.

Solution #8. Turn off Windows Mode

Usually, both wired/wireless and third-party keyboard comes with both Mac and Windows compatibility. If you’ve enabled the Windows toggle on the keyboard, some buttons like option and Command will have issues functioning on Mac. Usually, there is a switch to switch from Windows to Mac. Switch it to Mac and start using it.

Solution #9. Update macOS

macOS update includes solutions to fix the bugs causing various issues, including the emoji keyboard not working on Mac. Thus, we suggest updating the macOS to its latest version. For this, you can follow the steps below.

Step 1 : Select the  Apple Menu  located at the left top corner of Mac. Select  System Settings .

Open Apple Logo Select System Setting On Mac

Step 2 : Click on  General  from the left pane. Choose  Software Update  from the right side.

Choose General Select Software Update On Mac

Step 3 : let your Mac check for updates. If available, click on  Install Now .

Select Update Now On Mac

Solution #10. Contact Apple Support

If none of the solutions mentioned in the article go to your side, you can contact the Apple Support Team. That’s because we have performed all the possible solutions, and they’re a dedicated team of experts that can help to diagnose the problem and accordingly offer you a solution. And in case you find it a hardware problem, then carry your Apple keyboard to the nearest Apple Service Station and ask for repair.

Final Verdict!

This is how you can resolve the emoji keyboard shortcut not working on Mac running the latest macOS. However, if the issue continues, as a temporary solution, click on Edit from the Mac menu bar and choose Emoji & Symbols to quickly open the Emoji Menu.

Shortcuts not working properly on macOS Sonoma

After updating to Sonoma, some of my shortcuts are no longer working properly.
I narrowed it down to those which contain an Apple script in them.

Sometimes they work, and sometimes they don't. When they don't work, I get an error that the shortcuts app hasn't permission to use any keys because I use the keystroke command in the scripts. But I gave the app the permission for that.
