Live reviews

The Police concert was one of, if not the best, live shows I have ever attended.

The show was at Dolphin Stadium in Miami, outdoors on a hot July night. The atmosphere was magical, absolutely electric. It was so exciting!

The Police hadn’t toured for years, and now they were back, live, and no one there was going to miss a second! This was my first time seeing The Police live, and I was really surprised at how engaged they were with the crowd. I had expected pretty much a straight set list, with a break in the middle, but the band talks a lot during their shows. Lots of jokes, unscripted conversation and interaction with the audience

.This show was part of the 30th Anniversary Tour, so the set list was classic – they opened with Message in A Bottle, and played all their hits – Synchronicity, Don’t Stand So Close to Me, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da, Roxanne and of course Every Breath You Take. The crowd sang along quite a bit, and was encouraged by the band. This show will always stick out in my memory. Just seeing The Police was great of course, but the outside venue, the crowd standing on the field, right up close to the stage and the hot summer night made it even more special.

45 Years Ago: The Police Plays First Show With Classic Trio Lineup

The infamous and often-exaggerated cliche with the Police is that they rarely agreed on anything, despite their obvious musical chemistry. Fittingly, the band's memories of their first classic-trio show differ wildly — singer-bassist Sting seems to consider it a vital, enlightening moment, but guitarist Andy Summers looks back with disgust.

Technically, it  wasn’t the first Police three-piece . The " fake punk " group debuted live in March 1977, with Sting joined by co-founding drummer Stewart Copeland and Corsican guitarist Henry Padovani. (They even released an obscure single, "Fall Out," that May.) However, the trio briefly expanded into a quartet later that summer, with Summers — who’d played alongside Sting and Copeland in Mike Howlett’s funky two-bass project, Strontium 90 — joining as the second guitarist.

The fit turned out to be awkward: Summers favored a more colorful, versatile style than Padovani’s raw punk attack. And after a pair of shows — including France’s Mont de Marsan Punk Festival, alongside the Clash , the Damned and the Jam — the Police settled into their trio configuration of Sting, Copeland and Summers.

"Andy shows up with his harmonic sophistication, and Sting starts writing these big songs," Copeland wrote in his 2010 memoir, Strange Things Happen: A Life With the Police, Polo and Pygmies . "A sound of our own is beginning to hatch."

That sound — an innovative fusion of punk, reggae and new wave — fully bloomed on the band’s debut LP, 1978’s Outlandos d’Amour . In the meantime, the Police still had some gelling to do. The new trio’s first headlining performance took place on Aug. 18, 1977, at Rebecca’s, a small nightclub in Birmingham, England, where the original lineup had previously backed punk singer Cherry Vanilla.

Sting describes the Police show with romanticized intensity in his 2004 book Broken Music , calling it a "crucial Rubicon" that could have brought one of two outcomes: "We will either cross it successfully or our fragile enterprise will be swept downstream in a chaos of despondency and abandoned dreams," he wrote.

"We walk onstage, the lights come up, and out of sheer desperation, panic, and I suppose character we somehow manage to kick off the shackles of self-doubt and despondency," Sting added, "and within the first eight bars of the first tune begin to play with the unrelenting power of a 10-ton hammer."

He described the rest of the gig as "total mayhem," ending with "three encores" and the destruction of a drum kit as they walked to their dressing room. "I know, perhaps for the first time, that I have found a flagship for my songs," Sting added. "We will prevail. It will take time, but now I’m certain of it.”

Summers’ recollection of this period is a bit less fond. The guitarist dismisses their early songs as "terrible" and unoriginal in his 2007 autobiography, One Train Later . "What we have is a fast, furious row more like three brats misbehaving, more the sound of a fashion statement than a musical message — and it’s worthless," Summers wrote. "In a nutshell, we suck." He also writes disparagingly about playing the venue "on the day Elvis [Presley] dies." (Technically Presley died on Aug. 16, 1977 . Both Sting’s website and Setlist.fm list the show at Rebecca’s happening two days later.)

"The prevailing style is easily described," Summers recalled. "It’s very fast, very loud and features heavily garbled shouting noises usually accompanied by large mouthfuls of spit. We go onstage in the small, dark club and whip through our entire set, accomplishing all the above values, and are done in about [12] minutes. We are supposed to play for an hour. … We are so intent on being viewed as punk that we miss the music entirely. … We are a band, but to me, it feels like one in name only.”

Perhaps the show fell somewhere between triumph and tragedy. Either way, the reconfigured Police eventually proved themselves, playing more shows that year before starting work on Outlandos d’Amour in January. In his book, Sting writes that "something rare [had] been uncovered" in Birmingham. Whether or not his bandmates agreed, pretty much everyone else would soon enough.

The revival of Birmingham’s Rickwood Field

Alabama fashion designer billy reid collaborating with the historic field.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (TENNESSEE VALLEY LIVING) - Tonight at the historic Rickwood Field, America’s oldest baseball park and former home of the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro Leagues, in the Iron City will welcome the St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants as the teams play in the Juneteenth Celebrity Softball Game.

To keep the history of Rickwood alive, Alabama Fashion Designer Billy Reid partnered with Rickwood Field to refurbish its gift shop. Billy volunteered his and his team’s time and talent to refurbish the Rickwood Field Gift Shop. Billy says this opportunity has been incredible for him.

Billy Reid

The project has been a long time coming. Back during COVID’s peak, Billy reached out to Gerald Watkins, chairman and executive director at Rickwood. Originally, Billy had reached out about a different project but then learned about the upcoming MLB game. For Billy, it’s been a passion project. Billy and his team saw an opportunity to help the field maximize their gift shop and they wanted to be a part of that.

In the collection, there are 5 different T-shirts. Ranging in colors, they sport simple designs that convey the integral history of Rickwood both in Birmingham and also in the history of America’s pastime.

Billy Reid

In the beginning, Billy says they didn’t know what the public response to the project would be. Having sold out at a Juneteenth tailgate at the Birmingham Billy Reid location, it’s safe to say that the public approves.

Billy Reid

The proceeds from the merch line will be donated to  Friends of Rickwood in an effort to preserve the field. Billy says that the MLB stepped up in a major way and it’s projects like this that help keep the legacy of Rickwood Field alive. Billy hopes that this project is just the beginning of the revival of Rickwood.

Thousands of fans pack Lincoln Financial Field for the Rolling Stones

Bryanna Gallagher Image

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Tens of thousands of fans packed Lincoln Financial Field for one of the hottest concerts of the summer.

The Rolling Stones were in town Tuesday night. For many people, seeing them perform is a family affair.

We talked to fans who have been to more than 70 shows, some first timers and even one as young as eight years old.

"This will be my third Stones concert, so I'm excited to share it with the younger generation," said the Nguyen family.

People from all generations made their way to South Philadelphia.

"This is my first concert. I've always wanted to see the Stones. It's crazy, 40-50 years later they're putting on the show. So it's a real honor to be here," said Matthew Fritz, who came with his dad.

"My dad took me to see the Stones in 1966. My son is taking me to see at Lincoln Financial Field in 2024," said Bob Douglas who was here with his dad, also named Bob.

Fifty-eight years ago, the pair saw the Stones in Atlantic City. The band jumped out of a helicopter and walked feet away from them at the Steel Pier.

"I said Bob, 'That's the Rolling Stones.' He was six years old. I could pick him up and put him on my shoulders. They walked right by us," said the elder Douglas.

Decades later, Mick still has it, and their fan base proves that.

"We want to see Mick dance... just bring it. He's got a lot of life in him for his age," said Candice and Joe Kent, of Phoenixville.

Jim Koski hosts his first History Walking Tour for the 2024 summer season

the police tour history

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Marquette Regional History Center held its first summer walking tour led by Jim Koski. The “Walk on the Wild Side: The Very Historical (Yet Occasionally Sketchy) Story of Marquette’s Founders Landing” tour is a new addition this year.

The tour shared all the phases the area of Founders Landing has gone through, from the Native American villages to Amos Harlow washing up on the lake shore in 1849. Being able to go to the areas and see these historical sites makes the stories feel that much more real, a participant shared.

“I love the chance that I get to research a part of Marquette’s history that I either didn’t know about or I’m discovering new things about it and share that with people,” said Jim Koski, Marquette Regional History Center tour guide.

Throughout the summer Marquette Regional History Center has pop-up tours as well as, other future events. For information on the pop-up tours or other events go to Marquette Regional History Center’s home page or their Facebook .

Sir Ed Davey has been out campaigning this morning, and he was asked by broadcasters about Nigel Farage's assertion that the West and the expansion of the EU "provoked" Russia's invasion of Ukraine ( more here ).

The Lib Dem leader replied unequivocally: "It is [Vladimir] Putin and Russia who are to blame for this, no one else.

"I strongly support the efforts that Britain has made to support Ukrainians. I wish we had done more, actually, and I think British people would be shocked if we do anything else."

Sir Ed went on to say: "I don't share any values with Nigel Farage."

His message to UK voters is that we "need to support the Ukrainian people".

"This is a time of deep insecurity in our world. I'm worried when I look to later this year, if Donald Trump wins the presidential election, it's possible that the United States will give less support to Ukraine, and Britain and the rest of Europe will have to stand up and work together."

Sir Keir Starmer has outlined his plans to tackle delayed compensation for those affected by the Windrush scandal, should he win the election.

He told broadcasters on Windrush Day today that "the compensation scheme which is there to deal with the real injustice is going too slowly".

"We've got too many examples of people who've died before they've got the compensation that they're entitled to.

"The Windrush unit needs to be re-established in the Home Office, and we will set up a permanent commissioner to be a champion and an advocate for the Windrush generation to make sure that these injustices are put right."

Campaigners are also calling for those affected to be given British citizenship within the first 100 days of the next government - but the Labour leader would not commit to that, should he win the election.

JK Rowling has said she will "struggle to support" Labour if Sir Keir Starmer keeps his current stance on gender recognition, saying that he has effectively "abandoned" women concerned about the effect of transgender rights ( more here ).

In response, Sir Keir told reporters: "I'm really proud of the long history of the Labour Party in making real progress on women's rights, passing landmark legislation that has changed millions of lives.

"Now that battle is never over, and we need to make further progress, which we will hope to do if we earn the trust and confidence of the voters at the general election.

"As we do so, I'm also determined that one of the changes that we will bring about if we win the election is a reset of politics, to make sure that as we make progress, we do it in a context that brings people together and all dialogue all debate is always done with respect for the views of everybody involved in those progress and in that discussion."

We've just heard from the Labour leader, who is back on the campaign trail this morning after taking a "Swift pitstop" at Taylor Swift's concert at Wembley last night.

He was asked by broadcasters about Nigel Farage's assertion that the West and the expansion of the EU "provoked" Russia's invasion of Ukraine ( more here ).

Sir Keir Starmer replied that the comments were "disgraceful".

"I've always been clear that [Vladimir] Putin bears responsibility, sole responsibility, for the Russian aggression in Ukraine, and we have always stood behind Ukraine."

That support for Ukraine, he said, has been done "united across parliament", adding: "I've made it my business to ensure that the opposition stood with the government on this issue."

"And I think anybody who wants to stand to be a representative in our parliament should be really clear that whether it's Russian aggression on the battlefield or online, that we stand against that aggression.

"That's standing behind Ukraine, but also standing up for our freedom."

As the polls show Labour still comfortably ahead of the Conservative Party, Rishi Sunak was asked by broadcasters if he is "deluded" for still talking about winning the election as his colleagues talk about preventing a Labour "supermajority".

The PM replied: "Of course I'm going to fight hard until the last day of this election because there is a choice for the country.

"Continue having your taxes cut with the Conservatives, providing you with that financial security, protecting your pension, getting down immigration.

"The alternative is handing a blank cheque to the Labour Party."

He warned voters not to "let Labour sleepwalk into Number 10", saying they should "scrutinise their plans, ask what it means for you and your family".

"Can you really afford Labour's thousands of pounds of tax rises?

"I want to keep cutting your taxes. That's the choice that everyone has in front of them in a couple of weeks' time."

Campaigners are saying that there are still thousands of victims of the Windrush scandal who have not received proper compensation, nor been given citizenship.

Many say it is because they don't trust the Home Office, and Rishi Sunak was asked by broadcasters why this has not been resolved.

The PM replied that "so many people suffered an injustice under successive governments over a long time" and "the Home Office has been working hard to rectify things".

"I think over 16,000 people now have been given the appropriate documentation that they deserve, and tens of millions of pounds in compensation has been paid out and something like 200 different community and outreach events have also been organised.

"But of course the Home Office is always reflecting, taking on feedback and seeing how it can improve and make sure that we right the wrongs of the past."

Nigel Farage's comments about Russia's invasion of Ukraine are not the only ones to have caused controversy in recent days.

The Reform UK leader has also accused Rishi Sunak of not understanding "our culture", in what has been criticised as a dog whistle.

Asked by broadcasters how Mr Farage's comments make him feel, the Southampton-born PM said: "I love this country deeply for what it has done for my family.

"My grandparents emigrated here with very little, and two generations later I have the enormous privilege of being our prime minister.

"And that's why I will work my hardest to repay this country for everything that it has done for my family."

Mr Sunak is the first British-Asian prime minister. He was born in Southampton to East African-born Hindu parents of Indian Punjabi descent.

We've just heard from Rishi Sunak, who was asked about Nigel Farage's assertion that the West "provoked" Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The PM told broadcasters: "What he said was completely wrong and only plays into [Vladimir] Putin's hands.

"This is a man who deployed nerve agents on the streets of Britain, who's doing deals with countries like North Korea.

"And this kind of appeasement is dangerous for Britain's security, the security of our allies that rely on us, and only emboldens Putin further."

We're now more than four weeks into the campaign and can see how the parties are faring in seats they have been targeting, for better or worse.

Watch where the party leaders have visited on our animated map below.

Using the two YouGov MRP polls conducted for Sky News since the election was called, we can examine whether visits from the party leaders have improved their fortunes - or made them worse.

Read the full analysis from our elections analyst, Dr Hannah Bunting , and data journalist Joely Santa Cruz  here:

JK Rowling has said she will "struggle to support" Labour if Sir Keir Starmer keeps his current stance on gender recognition, saying that he has effectively abandoned women concerned about the effect of transgender rights on women ( more here ).

Labour's Steve Reed said in response that the party has "the proudest track record of any political party when it comes to defending the rights of women".

He pointed to the Equal Pay Act, for example, and said Labour wants to go further in closing the gender pay gap, if elected to government.

The Harry Potter author was formerly a party member and donor, but has not continued due to her dissatisfaction with his stance.

But Mr Reed said she's "wrong", telling Sky News: "The Labour Party has always stood up for the rights of women. We will stand up for the rights of women into the future as well."

He said it was "very wrong that trans people were being used at one point as a political football", and that they "experience huge difficulties and challenges in their lives".

"I think we should offer them whatever support we can. That has no bearing whatsoever on our intention and the necessity to support women in their fight, continuing fight for equality."

A Labour spokesperson said in a statement that the Equality Act 2010, passed by the last Labour government, makes clear that "sex and gender are different".

"That’s why we have consistently said that we will not introduce self ID and that we will protect single sex spaces for biological women."

They added: "Keir was right to say that the discussion around these issues can become too polarised.

"After years of division under the Conservatives, Labour will bring the country together and ensure that everyone is treated with dignity and respect."
