Excellent trip in the wonderful outdoors!
The Baltic Experience tour was a lot of fun! Our Tour Leader, Agata, was superb! The small tour size (we had six participants) meant we got to know each other well. The tour had a perfect mix of planned group activities and time to explore the sites on our own. The on-line tour description was accurate and extensive. Three cautions: Travel insurance is MANDATORY, somewhat expensive, and not included in the tour price. Many, like me, will commit to the tour not knowing this additional cost will be tacked on. Second, the tour sometimes involves significant walking (up to 30 minutes) from transportation facilities to hotels while carrying your own bags (two weeks of baggage), as well as walking tours that sometimes involve climbing as many as 800 steps. This is a tour for fairly young and fit participants. Finally, European hotels and home-stay facilities generally don't have air conditioning or screened windows, meaning sometimes in the summer you will have to choose between sleeping in hot, stuffy rooms or opening the windows for mosquitoes to enter. All that said, this was a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable experience and I would highly recommend it for fit, adventurous people with positive attitudes who can tolerate occasional less-than-luxurious accommodations.

Tolle Erlebnisse, tolle Gegend, super Wetter, schöne Ausflüge, Verpflegung okay, Hotel schlecht
If I could rate 0 star I would PLEASE READ. We took the reindeer ride thinking it would be to a reindeer farm as this is what was sold to us! where we could feed the reindeer’s pet etc how wrong was we! We got picked up in the morning from our hotel which was fine, that was ok. We arrived at Santa Clauses village and got took to a 2 minute ride on the reindeer that was literally the experience it cost 360 euros for that experience! To add insult to the injury we seen the prices on the board it was only €25 per person for the ride children were less. we stayed at Santas village and got a taxi back which cost about 35 euros, but there is a bus you can catch from rovaniemi city centre number 8 bus which is cheaper, I understand they have got to make money but come on….. feel ripped off and yes we did decide to stay at Santa Clauses village.

Transfers were smooth and on time. Staff and Guide were very professional, courteous, friendly, and helpful. Accomodations good and clean. Equiptment was good. (Some of the layer-clothing was well-used.....in O.K. conditon, but COULD be upgraded for the sake of not looking so worn)
An absolutely amazing week with a great bunch of people. The staff were fantastic and enthusiastic. We had a lot of activities planned but also plenty of free time to explore as we wanted or to relax. Would strongly recommend to anyone interested in outdoor activity or wanting to push their comfort zones a bit!

Good trip! The dogsledding, reindeer farm and king crab excursion were all fun, although I wish we would have had more time at each activity since you get around 10 minutes of actual time sledding with the animals or "fishing" for the king crab. The arctic zoo was amazing! Nice time in Helsinki. The optional activities were not worth it at all: the snow hotel was a waste of $50, we walked around on our own and most of the hotel was closed for construction. And we didn't see the northern lights on that excursion (which I understand happens), but they didn't offer much else other than sitting around a fire and show-shoeing on our own, which is a lot for $150 each. We saw the northern lights on our own at the hotel in Inari. Also, the last day in Inari was kind of pointless since there's not much to see or do there. Great guide in Per!
We are not normally ones for guided holidays preferring to self explore. However, when this holiday arose we decided to give it a go. A planned holiday in 2021 for our 60th was prevented by COVID. Oh, how we are glad we did. This was the holiday of a lifetime made even better by the unbeatable Alain. From the moment we arrived at our first hotel to helping us checking in at the airport he was a gem. Feels like leaving a friend behind. Trips and tours were exceptional and organised by Alain in such a way to take away any stress or unanswered questions. And how many languages can he speak! In addition trips provided all the time you could want to self explore and discover for yourselves. This has been a dream and full credit to VOS. Already looking at Greenland! Thank you so much

I had lovely holiday in the Baltics. The trip was well organised with knowledgeable guides. Highly recommend this company.
This was a lovely tour that I would recommend to anyone who is new to Finland. Everything was easy. Transfer drivers were on time at each stop. Alex, the tour director, made everyone feel welcome and important. His knowledge of the Nordic and Baltic states is amazing. And he seems to be fluent in just about every European language. The local Helsinki guide (I’m embarrassed to say I forget her name) was also knowledgeable and very happy to answer questions. The train rides to Lappeenranta and back were very comfortable. In Lappeenranta I was particularly spoiled as I was the only person for this leg of the tour, so I had the guide to myself. Arja was a delight. As a long time resident and business owner of the town, she knew it inside out. We strolled like old friends through the streets and pathways as I soaked up the beautiful scenery, culture and history of the this beautiful land. I would highly recommend this tour for the relaxing and informative time it provides.

I have no complaint except for one incident, which was taken care of. The reason I'm sharing it is so it doesn't happen to the next customer. We were scheduled for a 2h husky safari from 14:00-16:30. From your office we we're scheduled for a transfer at 16:45 to Arctic Snow Hotel. Their wasn't enough time between so we were without a transfer to our hotel. We called ahead but they didn't wait. Our sweet tour guide drove us to the hotel and helped us arrange a new dinner reservations for a later time. Other then that everything was great.
The activities were great, but the transportation had definite issues.

The first part of the tour, from Vilnius to Riga was good. The tour programme was as marketed and the tour leader was informative. The dinner in Riga was good. Nevertheless, we had a new tour guide in Tallin and she only coverrd a half day programme. For the dinner somebody came and guide us to the Maikravh resto and left us alone to go back to hotel. As the hotel was quite a distance from the old town so we have to look for taxis by our own. The dinner was disappointed, we were the only guest in the keller restaurant and the food was aweful, let aline the way they served the dinner. It was served in a plate in which we had to share.. So it was not worth for the price we paid. The ferry trip was surprising as there was no information in advance about the ferry condition. It was aweful for us who dont have any experiences to take ferry. The programme in Tallinn and Helsinki was not as offered.
Excellent tour of the capitals. Everything was well managed and the tour guides were friendly and knowledgable. Perfect balance of tour activities and free time. Would highly recommend this tour!

Finland Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Coronavirus update.

As of July 30th Finland is open to travelers from a limited number of countries. Travelers from the US are currently banned from entering EU countries.

More resources for travel in the time of Covid-19

The easternmost country of Scandinavia, sharing a long border with Russia and speaking a language entirely different from Swedes or Norwegians, Finland is renowned as the land of the sauna -- a must-try experience when there. Its capital, Helsinki, is one of the most vibrant cities in the Baltic region, while the city of Rovaniemi -- known for its Santa Claus village and Northern Lights viewing -- makes for a great winter holiday right on the Arctic Circle.

Cities in Finland

Quick! Name a city in Finland. Did you say Helsinki? You’re in good company. When most American travelers think of the major Finland cities, they think of Helsinki, the country’s largest metropolis. We’ll bet our “grillimakkara” that you didn’t say Oulu, or Jyväskylä.

Read on about Finland’s most popular cities to tour:

1. Helsinki

The country’s capital, Helsinki is the common entry point for a Finland tour. This gorgeous seaside city includes around 330 islands off the coast, verdant parks (a third of the city is green!) and an easygoing, laid-back rhythm of life. Regularly scheduled ferries whisk travelers away to the islands throughout Finland tours - Suomenlinna and Pihlajasaari are popular choices - for beach days and even overnight camping.

There’s a reason Helsinki is rated one of the world’s best places to live - there are museums, music performance halls, theater, art and culture, thriving nightlife, amazing architecture, gourmet dining and more. This is one of Europe’s top destinations for festival lovers - no matter what time you visit, you’re likely to run across one featuring art, circus performances, opera, light and more.

One of Europe’s most striking architectural cities, Helsinki - and all of Finland, for that matter - is renowned for a stylish, yet functional design aesthetic. Find everything from Byzantine-Russian and neoclassical in the city’s museums, concert halls and train station. Make sure to include a tour of Helsinki’s Design District in Punavuori and the Design Museum.

There’s a lovely ambience throughout Helsinki, where eastern and western Europe meet. Sit awhile at an outdoor “terrassit” (alfresco bar or cafe) and take in the local personality. Craving fresh air and greenery? Helsinki combines an urban getaway with an easily accessible natural environment. Helsinki tours for active travelers capitalize on the archipelago’s beaches, parks, gardens, forests and, in the winter, frozen seas.

Finland’s favorite small city, Tampere is a low-key, friendly metropolis - and the sauna capital of Finland! Stop by the Rajaportti sauna in Pispala, dating from 1906, or one of more than 20 other saunas in the Tampere region. Other top attractions in Tampere include dining on the famous “black sausage” (look for it at Tampere Market Hall), attending the many festivals and concerts that take place here (in fact, this is the theater capital of Finland) and checking out the numerous quirky museums.

Looking for an outdoor adventure in Tampere? Walk up the Pyynikki ridge - this is the world’s largest gravel ridge formed by the ice age. From the colorful wooden houses of Pispala to two picturesque lakes - Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi - Tampere is a favorite Finland tour stop.

Finland’s most medieval town, Turku was named a European Capital of Culture in 2011. For those seeking Finnish history, visit this modern city full of ancient wonders, including a castle, cathedral and historic market square. The Aura River is the epicenter of Turku - from here, take a cruise to tour the Finland archipelago or nearby Naantali. And just like elsewhere in festival-full Finland, Turku lights up in summer with cultural events that celebrate dance, the middle ages, music, design, art, theater and more.

The northern culture capital of Finland, Oulu is the country’s fourth largest city. Finland cycling tours often include this outdoor- and nature-centric city - it boasts the most extensive bike path network in Finland.

Other outdoor pursuits in Oulu include ferrying to the island of Hailuoto and its impressive sand dunes (or cross by ice road in the winter), wander through lush parks and cross-country ski along well-maintained ski tracks. Then take a load off with some retail therapy at Rotuaari Promenade, featuring Oulu’s best dining and shopping opportunities.

5. Jyväskylä

Architecture tours of Finland can’t miss Jyväskylä - this is the unofficial capital of Alva Aalto and his superb architectural designs. It was right here that the illustrious architect went to school, lived and started his career. Explore it all, from classicism to functionalism to monumentalism.

Outdoor enthusiasts tour Jyväskylä for its serene lakes and bountiful hills, contributing to a love of sports and well-being. Visit Nykänen’s hill, a ski jumping stadium named after Finland’s legendary Matti Nykanen.

Climb the observation tower at Harju ridge for the best views of Jyväskylä. Inside, check out the top museums in Jyväskylä: the Craft Museum, the Alvar Aalto Museum, the National Costume Centre, the Aviation Museum and more.

National Parks in Finland

The Finnish people are an outdoor-loving bunch, making it no surprise that many popular Finland tours include outdoor adventure for all levels and interests. Cool rule: In Finland, there are what is known as “Everyman’s rights,” which means you can explore the parks as you wish as long as you pick up after yourself and are kind to the natural surroundings.

Our picks for the six top Finland national parks (*there are 40 in all!) for active travelers include:

  • Pallas-Yllästunturi -  If you’re looking for lodge-to-lodge hiking and skiing in Finland, look no further than Finland’s first hiking trail. In Pallas-Yllästunturi, you’ll breath Lapland’s freshest air, glimpse the Northern Lights and feel miles from everything - you are! - yet welcomed at comfortable lodgings and surrounded by charming villages.
  • Nuuksio -  One of the closest national parks to Helsinki, Nuuksio is an easy visit on a Finland tour. Hike along well-marked trails through lush forest and past placid lakes, stopping at the nearby Finnish Nature Centre Haltia to learn more about Finland’s natural attractions.
  • U rho Kekkonen National Park -  This 253,800-hectare national park is ensconced in the Saariselkä Wilderness, which extends all the way to the Russian border. The unfettered forest is home to free-range reindeer, bears, eagles and wolverines and offers some of the best off-the-grid hiking in Finland.
  • Oulanka -  One of the most pristine national parks in Finland, Oulanka is a far northern forest full of Scotch pines, silver birches and spruce trees. If you want to venture to the Arctic Circle during your Finland tour, this is the place to be. Shout-out to the innumerable wood ants who reside here and build nests nearly three feet high.
  • Koli -  Considered to be a sacred region of inland, Koli National Park was long feared for its powerful spirits. Hikers from all around the world come to experience one of Finland’s most pristine hiking regions. Koli is home to the longest valley in Finland, famous caves, waterfalls and the picturesque Lake Pielinen.
  • Repovesi -  With is rugged grandeur, Repovesi National Park contains some of Finland’s most pristine wilderness. The suspension bridge at Lapinsalmi is one of the most picturesque locations in Repovesi and a mindblowing challenge for those who can handle the incredible height. Favorite activities within Repovesi include nordic skiing, ice fishing, kayaking, berry picking, mushroom foraging and more.

What to Eat in Finland

The world’s top culinary cities are capitalizing on the locally sourced, sustainable, seasonable ingredient trend, but Finland has long been in the game. The most iconic foods to eat in Finland include meat and vegetables that are sewn into the quilt of the country’s landscape - think reindeer, bear, elk, salmon, arctic char, forest mushrooms, lingonberries, cloudberries and more. Whether you’re sitting down in one of Finland’s renowned gourmet restaurants or strolling through a covered market (kauppahalli), you’re in for a Finnish culinary treat.

Here, our top 10 things to eat on your Finland tour:

Grillimakkara -  Summer in Finland means these big, juicy sausages (there’s just as tasty in the winter months). Pair with mustard and a local brew.

Karjalanpiirakka -  Also known as Karelian pies, these handheld pastries are traditionally filled with potatoes, rice or carrots and spread with egg butter on top.

Kalakukko -  Similar to the karjalanpiirakka, but bigger and stuffed with fish, usually muikku from eastern Finland’s Lake District.

Ruisleipä -  You’ll see this favorite Finnish rye bread everywhere and in many different varieties. The cracker version is called näkkileipä - spread it with butter or cheese for breakfast or an evening snack.

Korvapuusti -  Cinnamon buns, plain and simple. You won’t be able to stop at just one of these favorite Finnish sweets.

Fresh Picked Berries -  Go for a hike in a Finnish forest in the summer and you’ll see legions of bilberry bushes. They’re lovely on their own or baked into a pie. Be on the lookout for other popular Finnish berries: the tart lingonberry and the sour cloudberry, available only for a short period each summer.

Leipajuusto -  Finland’s famous “squeaky cheese” is made from curdled milk, which is set and then either baked or grilled to give it a lovely golden-brown hue. Eat it sliced, even with coffee poured on top(!), with cloudberry jam or in a salad.

Silli ja uudet perunat -  Finland loves its potatoes with herring! Your Finnish culinary tour is sure to include hefty helpings of these new potatoes with fresh herring and chanterelles, or new potatoes with fish roe. Add a little dill, salt and pepper and it’s the perfect summertime Finnish food.

Reindeer -  One of the best meats to sample in Finland, reindeer from the northern province of Lapland is not only delicious and lean, but high in B-12, omega-3, omega-6 - it’s downright healthy! Look for reindeer stew, steak and even pasta dishes with reindeer.

Vispipuur -  Look for this popular Finnish dessert. It’s a sweet concoction of wheat semolina and lingonberries, then whipped to a mousse-like consistency.

How to See the Northern Lights in Finland

It’s actually pretty easy to capture the spectacular Aurora Borealis during your Finland tour - the Northern Lights are visible about 200 nights a year in Lapland, with the best chances of spotting them the farther north you go.

Your Finland tour guide can arrange for a snowy outing - whether snowshoeing, skiing, snowmobiling or riding in a dog sled - to take advantage of this top natural attraction in Finland. There are even new opportunities to sleep in high style under the Aurora Borealis - your Finnish tour could include a night in a glass-walled luxurious suite, an arctic treehouse or a glass igloo.

Top Souvenirs from Finland

While perhaps not as well known for the Swedish and Danish Scandinavian design of northern Europe, Finland has a unique design aesthetic, lending itself to fun souvenirs to bring home from your Finland tour.

Here, our favorite things to buy for remembering your time traveling in Finland:

1. A kuks a - this traditional Sami drinking cup is made from birch burl. Look for a handcrafted one to support the Sami people.

2. A puukko - the most popular brand of this traditional Finnish belt knife is Marttiini Puuko. It’s a great all-purpose tool for hiking and camping made from birch, oak, ash, horn or bone.

3. Everything berry - stock up on the amazing cloudberry jam, one of Finland’s best foods, although rare enough to be quite pricey, even for a small jar. Look for cloudberry-incensed fruit syrups, bath items, lotions and skin-care products.

4. Finnish liqueurs - there’s a lot of vodka in Finland and it’s not all the varieties you’ve seen before. Try licorice, mint or just run-of-the-mill Finlandia vodka. Another local favorite Finland beverage is Teerenpeli whiskey, locally distilled.

5. Moomin mugs and dishes - Kids throughout Finland adore the Tove Jansson’s Moomin characters (fairytale, forest-living creatures), which adorn dishes found in supermarkets and department stores throughout Finland. This is the perfect Finland souvenir for children.

6. Marimekko items - Sure, you can find Marimekko at Crate & Barrel back home sometimes, but a Marimekko dishtowel, bag, dress, dishes straight from the source does make for a very iconic souvenir of your Finland tour.

7. Sauna supplies - Bring home a Finnish sauna bucket and ladle - the buckets are typically constructed of birch wood, usually with invisible seams and decorative elements.

8. Fazer candies - from milk chocolate to hazelnut, cloudberry to peppermint, Fazer is Finland’s most popular candy. Try the ones filled with Arctic berry liqueurs - yum!

Summer in Finland

It’s not all reindeer and tundra in Finland - in fact, the summers can be quite lovely and warm. What’s more, there are many lakes in Finland - more than 188,000! - which lend themselves nicely to myriad watersports. And with summer daylight lasting so long, there are more than enough hours to take advantage of all the summer activities Finland has to offer. Here’s a taste of what to include in your summertime Finland tour:

1. Boating, Kayaking & More in the Finnish Archipelago : Did you know that 10 percent of Finland is covered in water? When you explore Finland by its lakes, you’ll get a quiet, insider view of the flora and fauna native to the region (including the protected Saimaa seals in their natural habitat).

Off the mainland of Finland, there are 30,000 island making up countless archipelagos, each with its own beauty and natural treasures - from the vast Archipelago National Park south of Turku, to the Ekenäs Archipelago National Park in the Gulf of Finland. The Kvarken Archipelago is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a boating favorite in Finland for its smattering of unfettered, rocky and wild islands.

2.   Birdwatching in Finland : Despite all those lakes, sometimes it’s hard to see them through all the trees - Finland is 69 percent covered by forests, making it a birders’ paradise. Some of the top birds to look for in Finland include Blyth’s Reed Warbler, Red-flanked Bluetail, Arctic Warbler, Pine Grosbeak, Great Grey and Snowy Owls, Golden Eagles and many more.

3.   Biking Through Finland : Whether your tastes run toward road biking or mountain biking, cycling in Finland is a popular pasttime. For the most part, cyclists will find the country full of flat or gently rolling terrain through rural farmland and countryside, past placid lakes and through dense forest. The 250-kilometer King’s Road is a popular biking route in Finland - it follows the historic postal route from Helsinki to Turku. Ride along the same path as kings and armies from the 1300s to the present, passing mansion, taverns and inns that were originally built as accommodations along this route.

4. Fishing in Finland : Again, it comes back to all that water - did we mention that 10 percent of Finland is covered by water. Think about it - there are 188,000 lakes, 647 rivers and more than 1,100 kilometers of coastline. Fishing in Finland will result - you hope - in Arctic char, salmon, brown and rainbow trout, Baltic herring, flounders and countless other species. Fly-fishing, trolling, jigging - it’s all possible, and with no fishing license required.

5.   Hiking in Finland : With a lot of unsettled wilderness and a sparce population in those regions, Finland boasts amazing hiking tour opportunities. Trek through 36 national parks, a third as many wilderness area and nine designated “hiking areas.” Your Finland outdoor adventure tour guide can point you toward the best trails for your ability level, as well as accommodations along the way, including lean-tos, rental cabins and campsites.

Finland Winter Travel

1.   Skiing and snowboarding : The snowsports season in lengthy in Finland, from November until about May in the northern sections of the country. The four main ski resorts in Finland are Levi, Yllӓs, Pyhӓ-Luosto and Ruka.

2.  Dog sledding : Inspired by the Iditarod? Your Finnish tour guide can arrange a dog-sledding excursion that’ll have you mushing like a champ.

3. Break the ice : An exciting outdoor adventure in Finland is a ride on the Icebreaker Sampo, a vessel formerly owned by the Finnish government and today used to provide insight into how the ice is moved and broken to allow for transit.

4. Ice fishing : Fish for pike and perch (the national fish of Finland) through a frozen lake. It’s easiest to learn to ice fish as part of a Finland tour because they’ll provide the necessary equipment.

5. Spend the night in an igloo : Or in an ice hotel. While it’s not necessarily a Finland outdoor activity, per se, this unique overnight opportunity takes advantage of the natural environment and celebrates your near-Arctic Circle location.

Top Cultural Attractions in Finland

While Finland is defintiely well known as an outdoorsy travel destination, there are plenty of wonderful cultural attractions and landmarks to take in on your next Finland tour! Check out some of our can't miss spots:

Sea Fortress Suomenlinna -  This World Heritage Site is actually built on six islands and is a favorite cultural attraction in Finland for both visitors and locals. H

Rock Church in Helsinki -  One of Helsinki’s must-see attractions, the Rock Church boasts a mesmerizing copper dome and is built directly into rock. The exposed walls make for incredible acoustics.

Helsinki Cathedral -  It took 22 years for the construction of this neoclassical beauty,  today a Finnish Evangelical Lutheran cathedral. This is one of Helsinki’s most-often visited sights.

Winter War Museum -  This insightful museum tells the story of one of Finland’s most important World War II battles, the Battle of Suomussalmi.

Pielpajärvi Wilderness Church -  If you’re up for a hike, take the time to trek to this small wooden church, one of Lapland’s oldest surviving churches, from 1760.

Rauma Old Town -  The World Heritage Site Rauma boasts classic wooden architecture and the opportunity to see what Finland used to look like.

National Gallery -  There are approximately 35,000 painting at the National Gallery in Helsinki, between three buildings. Art lovers should be sure to include this on their Finland tour for a well-rounded peek at classic and modern Finnish and European art.

Sámi Museum Siida -  Learn about the native Lapland people the Sámi, at this open-air museum showcasing traditional dwellings and handicrafts.

How to Sauna in Finland

One can’t truly say they’ve been on a Finland tour if they haven’t had a sauna experience while there. After all, between the nearly five million Finns, they own more than two million saunas, so to say these steamy rooms are ubiquitous is an understatement. But, just how does one use a sauna in Finland?

Finnish culture uses the sauna as a place to relax both body and mind - in fact, they think of it not so much as a luxury, but a necessary part of a healthful life. Travelers to Helsinki or elsewhere in Finland should give a wood stove or smoke sauna a try for its intense and purifying dry heat, following it up with a refreshing shower. Then, of course, it’s on to a hefty snack of sausages and local brews.

Similarly to the traditional Onsen experience in Japan , there are some specific steps you should follow in order to truly enjoy an authentic and culturally appropriate suana experience in Finland.

Here’s our cheat sheet to the Finnish sauna custom , so you’re fully prepared to experience this tradition during your Finland tour:

-Start with a shower.

-Enter the sauna room.

-If preferred, use bunches of silver birch (or vihta ) to gently beat your muscles and relax them.

-When the dry heat ( höyry ) becomes too much, have a shower or jump into a cool body of water - during the winter in Finland, some will even roll in the snow or jump through the ice into the lake.

-Indulge in sausages and beer with your fellow sauna-mates.

-Depending on personal sauna preference, repeat this process from 30 minutes up to two hours.

-It’s frowned upon to wear clothing in the steam room, but it’s OK to sit on a small towel. When you’re cooling off, grab a towel - most people do.

-If your Finnish tour includes a visit to a private home or summer residence, you’ll find that the sauna is usually warmed up and prepared as a manner of honoring the guest. Don’t worry, if it’s not your thing, it’s OK to decline. But, really, at least consider it - this is an age-old tradition and iconic experience in Finland.

We were very pleased with the service provided by our travel consultant, Sofia. She was very prompt in replying to all our queries. We enjoyed the itinerary where different experiences were offered - various train rides and cruises. The hotels were good, all centrally located and spacious with very good breakfasts provided. Everything is planned for with detailed information, maps and vouchers. All we needed to do was present ourselves at the various venues. We felt assured that there is someone who knows our plans and who we could call upon should we require any assistance. I would definitely recommend Nordic Visitor to anyone who wants to go Scandinavia on a free-and-easy yet have all the hassle of planning taken care of.

Finland is a year-round destination: Winters are great for outdoor activities like downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, skating and ice-swimming. Spring and autumn are the best seasons to see the Northern Lights in Finnish Lapland. Late summer and autumn are ideal for foraging and enjoying colourful autumn foliage. The spring months (until early May) offer the best skiing in Lapland – in the south, the snow will be gone by then. The summer months across Finland are known for their white nights, and in Lapland, as a time when the sun never sets. Big cities have interesting things to see and do all year, and across Finland, it’s always sauna season . With our Finland tours you can have different experiences throughout a year! Tripadvisor 539 reviews, great to do once..

The scenery was beautiful and Santa was great. Wish I would have gone at night rather than during the day because it is all lit up at night. Tour guide was great-helped us find a reindeer hide to purchase which was cheaper there than at our hotel... The reindeer sled ride was great.

A Finnish couple's actual house with a wood burning sauna and a pond to jump into!

We had a wonderful experience visiting Alex Rudyuk. Along with an incredible sauna, he gave us much information about his world. We appreciate the knowledge, and really feel that we got an actual taste of what living in northern Finland is like. Thank you so much!

Authentic Finnish sauna and lunch!

My friend and I had the best experience with Tetiana! She picked us up from a central location in Rovaniemi and drove us to their private home just outside of Rovaniemi. Her knowledge of the Finnish culture was amazing and we learnt so much! The sauna was a traditional Finnish sauna (only 150 of these left in Finland!) and we had this to ourselves. Towels, slippers and tea were provided. We went ice swimming in their private late and as recommended made snow angels! Tetiana then made us an amazing traditional Finnish lunch which was the best meal we'd had in Finland throughout our travels. Tetiana was really accommodating and took photos for us and dropped us back at our accomodation. This was my favourite experience in Rovaniemi and would love to do it again! Thanks Tetiana.

Absolutely worth it!

I visited the zoo on a warm (-4°C), sunny monday and was lucky to see most of the Arctic animals. The zoo is an animal sanctuary too, so they are very well taken care of. Special thanks to Pedro, our very friendly guide and good driver! Good selection at the buffet! There's also a Karl Fazer chocolate and candy shop with good prices.

Well organized and very considerate guide Alex

It was frozen night -25. And yes, we managed to view the aurora from camera . We’re group of 4 people from Asia . Not used to this type of coldness. Alex was very considerate , he let us stay in vehicle and on the engine to keep us warmth.

The trip was awesome. We were picked up at our hotel & dropped off also. You’ll have a great chance to come across arctic animals in the zoo . Alex & his wife were comforting and the food they made was amazing! It was a very private tour, we got the full experience of sauna & ice water bath. I recommend this to anyone who has a free day in Lapland. 👍🏽 thank you guys !!

La matinée a commencée avec la visite du zoo puis un super repas. Nous sommes retournées à rovaniemi puis direction le sauna..... Super environnement ... Une eau à 2°.... Et u délicieux repas avec du saumon cuisiné par notre hôte Inoubliable

A Must in Rovaniemi

I didn’t think I could do it but I’m so glad I did because it really is a once in a life time experience when you’re not from Europe. I highly recommend booking this tour, our guides were so friendly and gave us amazing insights into Finnish culture.

Mr & Mrs Smith

Thank you Alex for a great night chasing the Northern Lights in Rovaniemi. Your professional knowledge of the best viewing areas and local culture was very good. We look forward to many more wonderful nights. Thank You

Great northern lights tour!

Really enjoyed the tour tonight - had an amazing time, saw some great lights and the hosts were really informative and lovely!! Would recommend.

Unique experience

This was an amazing experience. Our guides Pedro and Nicolai were excellent. The suits may feel a little claustrophobic to some. You have to be gentle when entering the water to keep dry, but once in it is quite relaxing to just float there. Unfortunately, there were no northern lights visible when we were there, but very enjoyable.

Thanks for visiting nordicvisitor.com! For the very best browsing experience on our website, we urge you to upgrade to the most recent version of your browser . Some of our site features may not function properly on older versions.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lapland

You may want more information on visiting Lapland, so we’ve answered the most commonly asked questions for your peace of mind. If you want more information on Lapland then we suggest having a read of our Lapland travel guide . If you'd like to learn more about booking with us, check out our FAQs or contact our team of travel specialists.

1. Is Lapland a real country?

Lapland isn’t a country but a region of Northern Europe with over 170,000 inhabitants and 100,366 square kilometres of sparsely populated land. Rumoured to be the home of Santa Claus and his workshop, Lapland also has a reputation as a winter wonderland, with snow blanketing the land for a lot of the year.

2. Is Lapland in Sweden or Finland?

Lapland is a region within the Arctic Circle that is spread across both Sweden and Finland. Parts of Lapland also cover Norway and the Kola Peninsula of Russia.

3. When should I visit Lapland?

A popular time to visit Lapland is during the winter months between December and March, as this is when you can experience thrilling excursions like snowmobiling, cross country skiing and reindeer sleigh rides. As well as this, it’s peak northern lights viewing season so you’ll have a good chance of seeing them “dancing”.

In our blog, we’ve written about visiting Lapland in the winter and chasing the northern lights .

4. Which airport do you fly to for Lapland?

Depending on where you’re visiting from and whether you decide to fly to Swedish Lapland or Finnish Lapland , the airport you fly into could be Kiruna, Rovaniemi or Kemi. If you’re not sure which would be best for you, get in touch with our team of travel consultants as they’ll be able to advise which airport you’ll need to travel to.

5. Do they speak English in Finland?

Yes – English is widely spoken in Finland. English is taught in schools so most people will know basic phrases. When you travel on our tours, this isn’t something you’ll have to worry about as your guides will be English speaking.

6. Is Lapland in the North Pole?

Lapland is far north and located in the Arctic Circle, but it is not in the North Pole. However, Rovaniemi is home to Santa Claus Village , "the official North Pole residence" of Father Christmas.

7. How many days do you need in Lapland?

Depending on the attractions and activities you want to see and do, you can spend anywhere from a long weekend to a week in Lapland. However, for the sake of enjoyment, you won’t want to rush your visit. This is why all of our holidays are tried and tested by staff to ensure you get to experience the best of Lapland at a comfortable pace.

8. What country does Lapland belong to?

Lapland is a region that is spread across many countries, and so does not technically belong to any one of them. Finnish Lapland makes up for almost one third of Finland, and Swedish Lapland a quarter of Sweden, but the region also covers Norway and part of the Kola Peninsula in Russia.

9. Does Lapland have snow all year round?

It snows in Lapland for a lot of the year due to its subarctic climate and location within the Arctic Circle. This is why it’s a popular destination for winter trips and ski holidays. However, in the summer months, the snow and ice melts to reveal green forests and tranquil lakes and rivers.

For a detailed guide to Lapland’s climate, read our weather guide .

10. Can I choose the arrival date?

Yes, you can choose the best arrival dates to suit you, however we advise that you book as soon as possible as accommodation is limited and in-demand, especially in the ICEHOTEL and Arctic SnowHotel. All of our tours are available to book online, so secure your chosen dates as soon as you find them.

11. How much can I customise my tour?

All our packages are created to give you the best experience in Lapland, so whether you’re keen to explore the wilderness, add a meeting with Santa to your visit or stay in the ICEHOTEL, we have a tour to suit you.

However, if you want to do something extra, like spending additional days at either end of your journey or adding on another destination like Iceland or Norway , then all you have to do is ask.

Simply choose the Lapland package that best suits you and then contact our travel consultants about customising it. We’re happy to modify your itinerary where we can so you can tick off more attractions and areas on your travel wish list.

12. When should I book my flight tickets?

We’d advise that you look over flights for timings and dates, but hold off purchasing until you’ve booked your preferred tour. Once you’ve had a confirmation email from your personal travel consultant, you should then choose and pay for your flights. This is especially important as Lapland has the popular SnowCastle and ICEHOTEL to stay in and rooms can go quickly.

Our packages come with daily itineraries and all of your accommodation organised for you, so once you have all of the information you can make an informed choice on your flight times. If you have any questions, you can always contact your consultant for advice.

13. How should I dress for Lapland in winter?

We advise that you dress for the cold weather as you’ll be spending some of your tour in the outdoors. The snow-covered countryside can be uneven or slippery, so sensible footwear like walking shoes or boots is a must. Here are a few more of our suggestions:

  • Thick woollen socks, ideally several pairs
  • Thermal base layers
  • Warm woollen sweater
  • Jeans or other casual trousers
  • Thin wool or fleece gloves (ideal as a base layer under snowmobile gloves)
  • Warm gloves, scarf and cap
  • Camera with extra batteries
  • Small backpack/rucksack for day tours
  • Heat pads for hands and feet

For a more detailed list of what to bring, read our Lapland packing guide .

HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR FINLAND TOURS INCLUDE:

Finland has some of the most beautiful natural scenery and untouched wilderness in Europe. It is no secret that Finland is a magical winter destination with our Lapland Arctic highlights tour and Lapland Christmas Magic escorted tour amongst many options for Finland tours in wintertime.

But with thousands of lakes and beautiful forests summer in Finland should not be dismissed. Have you ever found yourself saying "if only there were more hours in the day?" In Finland your wish will come true. Just as Finland experiences no sun in winter months, the opposite is true in summer.

With 24 hours of daylight in the north and only 'twilight' in the south you literally have more hours to explore Finland and its beautiful forests and thousands of lakes where you can enjoy canoeing, fishing, camping and sauna. For an authentic short escape, our Endless summer days by Lake Saimaa tour will have you experience the tranquillity of Finnish lakes.

Northern Lights/Aurora Borealis in Scandinavia are at their most frequent between end of September and end of March. A range of our Finland and Scandinavian tours have been made to maximise your chances of viewing this remarkable phenomenon. Autumn colours & Aurora Borealis is an example of a wonderful Finnish Autumn tour, but to maximise your experience, all our Northern Lights tours are away from the cities to avoid artificial light pollution.

In winter Finland transforms into a fairytale landscape of whites and ice and is the best time of the year to travel to northern Finland and Lapland. Most of the traditional Lappish activities involve snow, so we would recommend you travel between December and April.

Be sure not to miss Northern Lights/Aurora Borealis tours, snowmobile driving, husky ride, reindeer sleigh rides, snowshoeing and visiting the real Santa Claus which are all activities offered in most of our Finland tours.

OUR FINLAND TOURS CAN INCLUDE:

Our Finland travel options are endless and depending on what you want to experience we have a Finland tour suitable for any age and interest.

For a true taste of what Finland has to offer in summer, why not take our independent self-drive Green Forests & Blue Lakes in Finland tour package. This tour to the eastern parts of Finland is like taking a trip into the heart of Finnish identity. You will enjoy relaxing green forests, rolling hills and glittering lakes.

If you don't fancy sub-zero temperatures associated with Finland in winter, consider an Autumn tour. During this Lapland Autumn Tour you can stay in an Aurora Dome whilst experiencing peaceful afternoons at the lake and Northern Light activities.

If you want to try winter activities such as snowshoeing, snowmobile rides, husky safari or reindeer rides - Finland is the place to be. There is almost always snow in Northern and Eastern Finland between December and March and you would not want to miss these experiences on a tour often in combination with seeing Northern Lights/ Aurora Borealis.

To meet and hug the real Santa Claus in Finland is often a once in a lifetime experience. During our Polar Bears & Santa in Lapland tour families get to meet Santa in his very secret hideout and learn about everything Christmas. All our Christmas tours include a range of winter activities, and if you can't find a Christmas in Finland tour to suit, we can tailor make an itinerary for you.

Many of our Finland Christmas holidays run on specific dates, however we also offer pre-Christmas packages such as Pre-Christmas at Aurora Village , New Year packages such as New Year's Eve in Lapland tour as well as tours starting in January.

Of course, a trip to Finland is not complete without visiting the vibrant capital Helsinki. This hotspot for design and architecture is not to be missed. You can take a break in a sauna, taste the Finnish cuisine, visit Nuuksio National park or simply take a stroll in Helsinki's design district.

The 9 Best Finland Tours For Unforgettable Adventures That Are Achievable & Affordable!

Expert travel storyteller Jordan Adkins, founder of InspiredByMaps.com, brings a decade of adventures across 101 countries and 450+ UNESCO sites into rich, off-the-beaten-path narratives, melding ecological expertise with genuine, seasoned travel insights. His full bio can be found here.

Finland is the happiest country in the world, at least according to the World Happiness Report. But you don’t need anyone to tell you that when you’re wrapped up in warm layers, sitting by a campfire – or sleeping in a glass igloo – gazing upward, spellbound by the sky ablaze in ethereal light.

The Aurora borealis or Northern Lights is on many travelers’ bucket lists not only because it is a natural spectacle of epic proportions, but also because it can be elusive. The universe has to, quite literally, conspire for this dazzling sky show to appear, which is why it can only be seen in certain places at certain times of the year under very specific conditions. It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience worth planning for.

And because you’ll want it to be perfect, you would want to work with industry experts who know when and where to take you to increase your chances of seeing the spectacular light show. You just might miss it by one night and not get another chance for a long time. Because it’s a rare natural phenomenon, the Northern Lights are best experienced under the care and guidance of experienced tour providers.

On the ground, Finland lures active adventurers into its myriad playgrounds, whether blanketed in thick powdery snow, dotted with inlets and islands, or blessed with hundreds of placid emerald lakes. Whizz past wintry forests while riding a wooden sled powered by a motor or pulled by pack animals.

Ride on a wooden sled pulled by reindeer through snowcapped woodlands and breathe in the crisp winter air. Soak up the stillness of a wintry world that seems to be at the very ends of the earth, and let that dancing curtain of eerie green glow speak to you at a primal level. Maybe then you’ll understand why the Finns are one of the happiest peoples on Earth (and science backs them up).

Let experts on the ground arrange these expeditions for you and take the hassle out of packing gear. You won’t need to bring skis or snowshoes or bicycles as they can be supplied onsite by well-equipped tour operators. All you need to pack is your personal effects and travel documents. And, of course, a yearning for adventure.

Below the Arctic Circle, Finland beckons with vast waters stretching east to the Russian border in a region known as Lakeland. Well-connected to Helsinki by rail, Lappeenranta is the gateway to cruises on Lake Saimaa, the country’s largest. Enjoy a dinner cruise as the ship navigates narrow channels, quiet beach coves, forested islands and boreal woodlands.

To the southwest lies the jagged coast of Finland extending into the Baltic Sea. It is strewn with inlets and islands linked by ferry service. At its heart lies Turku, once the Finnish capital, now a thriving university town with a trove of historical riches. Gear up with a helmet and fill your panniers. The gravel roads and narrow lanes beg slow travel.

And then there’s Helsinki and the capital region, with hints of Scandinavian influence in its design aesthetic, and obvious Russian influence in its Neoclassical brick buildings. It has kept its heritage well-preserved in dozens of museums and UNESCO sites.

Helsinki is well connected internationally, but so are Turku and Rovaniemi. So where to? Let these tours help you decide where to go. Wherever you end up, you’ll likely find a sauna to soak in.

7 Excellent Northern Lights Tours in FINLAND

northern lights tours in finland

Ready to see the aurora borealis in Finland? Get your aurora-hunting off to a great start with this selection of excellent locally-operated northern lights tours in Finland Lapland, plus several good reasons to join a tour vs going alone.

Travelers from around the world make their way to Finnish Lapland every year to capture a glimpse of the elusive aurora borealis. And although there are many excellent options when it comes to selecting a great tour, not all of the northern lights tours in Finland are created equal.

And while it is possible to head out on your own with your fingers crossed, in hopes of finding an amazing location to hunt for the ghostly lights, it is best to go on a tour with a reputable operator, who offers a more personalized, local experience.

In this article, we share a selection of the best northern lights tours in Finland, to help make your hunt for the elusive aurora borealis a successful one. And if you’re on the fence about whether to book a tour or not, we also share some very good reasons for why you should.

Your Guide to Northern Lights Tours in Finland Lapland

Why book into northern lights tours in finland.

Personally speaking, as someone who has travelled to Finnish Lapland to see the northern lights, I highly recommend booking into a locally-operated tour rather than attempt to seek out the aurora yourself. During my trip to Lapland, I joined two separate tours on different nights, and even though the lights didn’t show due to cloud cover (no fault of the tour operators) I don’t regret it a single bit.

Why? The main reason, to be honest, was the access to ‘secret’ rural locations. Staying in resorts, we were surrounded by bright lights which would have obscured the view. But Lapland is a quiet place; you can’t simply call a taxi in the middle of the night, and hiking in the snow at night without a guide was out of the question.

The other reason I loved the tours, was because it allowed me a unique opportunity to experience the local Lappish lifestyle… I enjoyed chatting with locals and learning about my Finnish ancestry, while standing in the thick snow, around a smouldering fire with hot cocoa in hand. Those little touches made it an occasion to remember, regardless of whether the aurora appeared or not.

That’s my personal experience, but here are several more reasons to book into a northern lights tour in Finland, instead of going alone.

locally operated northern lights tours in finland

#1 Expertise and Local Knowledge

For starters, heading out into the Finnish wilderness with a professional northern lights tour guide will increase your opportunities of not only viewing the elusive lights, but also allows access into some of the best locations for creating that truly memorable experience.

Experienced local guides possess intimate knowledge of the best locations and optimal times for Northern Lights sightings. Their expertise extends beyond predicting auroral activity to understanding the local geography and weather patterns, thereby ensuring a higher likelihood of witnessing the auroras in their full splendor. With this knowledge, they can select locations that will give you the best viewing experience possible, that you wouldn’t be able to access on your own.

#2 Comfort and Convenience

Professional tour guides, also offer their own transportation. Most of the time, they offer reliable and comfortable seats, food, and amazing insight into the auroras, and the local history of Lapland. This comfort makes it more convenient for travelers, as there is no need to procure their own transportation or attempt to navigate through unfamiliar winter terrain. Some local tour guides may even offer snacks and hot cocoa, which will make passing the time more enjoyable.

#3 Specialized Equipment and Services

Because of how cold the Finnish Lapland gets during the peak of the winter months, it’s important to make sure that you have the right equipment to keep you warm out in the snow. Many popular local tour guides go above and beyond by providing you with important equipment such as boots, and thermal suits, to keep you warm throughout the frigid Arctic night. You may even find a tour that can take you out on a sleigh ride, or introduce you to the traditional Sami culture.

#4 Safety Assurance

Dealing with the Arctic environment during the winter months can be challenging even for an experienced outdoorsman. Professional tour operators prioritize safety over anything else and ensure that you have the and follow proper extreme weather behavior that will allow you to focus on the enjoyment of the experience.

#5 Photography Assistance

But let’s not forget, that if you are going to go hunting for the elusive Northern lights, then you’ll want to take some amazing photographs of your experience. Because taking photographs of the night sky is so difficult, many professional tour companies not only provide assistance and training on how to get the best shots imaginable, but others may even offer specialized rental equipment that will make capturing the lights an even easier prospect.

#6 Optimal Timing

Capturing a glimpse of the elusive lights is not just about visiting Lapland during the peak of the frigid winter months, it’s also about knowing what time of night to head out into the field. Professional tour operators in Finland are experienced in predicting where and when the northern lights will appear.

Benefits of Supporting Local Tour Operators

Granted, larger tour operators may have more extensive resources, but a lot of the money they collect, does not go to the local economy. When visiting the Finnish Lapland, it’s important to support local tour operators, as this will have a positive impact on the communities you are visiting. Local tour operators will provide you with a more intimate, authentic, and of course, culturally rich experience.

Local Insight

As locally operated tours are owned and run by individuals who are passionate about the region they live in, as well as the northern lights, you will be able to enjoy more local insight by selecting a small tour operator versus a larger national chain. They can provide you with more intimate information about the local culture and traditions, as well as the history of the region. All of this adds more authenticity to the experience.

Personalized Attention

Since local operators tend to run smaller tour group sizes, this ensures that you are given a more personalized and intimate experience. Larger tour guides can provide big comfortable buses to take you out into the countryside, but going out and larger groups reduces the amount of time that you have to interact with the guides.

Secluded Experiences

Of course, one of the biggest benefits of choosing a local tour operator is their personal knowledge of the region. This allows them to take you out to more lesser-known and secluded locations, where you will not be inundated by the larger crowds created by the national companies. All of this allows you to achieve a Northern Lights viewing experience that is peaceful and more exclusive.

Economic Impact

Whenever you spend money with a local tour operator, the money that you spend is directly contributed to the economy of the local community. Simply put, every dollar you spend on a local tour, is circulated within the community, which means that not only does the tour operator benefit from providing you the experience, but all of the local businesses and the residents benefit as well. This fosters more sustainable tourism experiences.

Tailor-Made Experiences

Because local tour companies are operated by individuals, they can be more flexible with their itinerary, to provide you with a more memorable experience. They are capable of adjusting their schedules to fit your needs, and can even incorporate particular cultural activities that you would like to experience while you are in Lapland. Larger operators often overlook these tailor-made experiences.

Final Thoughts on Finland Northern Lights Tours

The tours we’ve provided here are just a snapshot of some excellent options for northern lights tours in Finland. Online travel agencies, full-service travel agencies.

  • Finnish Adventures page

Introduction This page includes guided day trip providers, online travel agencies and full-service travel agencies.

Full-service agencies offer holidays and package tours to popular destinations; these agencies generally provide transportation, tour guides and additional services at the destination to assist their clients. Many are also able to arrange fully customised travel itineraries worldwide for their clients.

Online travel agencies do not provide the same level of service. They are essentially online shops where the user can search for and purchase cheap flights, package tours, or accommodation from a number of airlines and/or operators, and look after themselves from then on.

Top Tip: Many companies on this page promote Last Minute Deals - Äkkilähdöt / Tarjoukset or similar at their sites. You can also register to receive notification of special offers by e-mail - even before they go online! In either case, the deals can be very good value. You will probably have to be prepared to leave within 1-3 weeks, but an offer like €500 for flights and a week in a three or four-star hotel, including breakfast, next to the beach in a southern European resort would not be unusual. Great value if you have the time!

Not many sites have full English versions. Online bookings generally don't work in Google Translate , but most function well including booking forms using 'Translate' in the Chrome browser ( How? ). Translate in Chrome Desktop: Right-click anywhere on a page and click Translate to [Language]. iPhone / iPad: At bottom of screen, tap Translate. Android: At bottom of screen select Language, tap Translate. If you don't have Chrome, open the Finnish-language site in Finnish in one tab/window, and open it in Google Translate in a separate tab/window. Use the translation as a reference, but make your searches and bookings in the original Finnish site .

Best time to visit finland.

Finland has pleasant summers, with July being the warmest month (temperatures usually average around 15°C).

Outdoor activities like hiking, mountain biking and fishing are popular during summer and spring.

In Lapland midsummer is also the time of the midnight sun, a phenomenon where the sun barely sets.

Winter runs from November to March and during this time expect plenty of snowfall - perfect for skiing, snow boarding, snowshoeing and sledding. With temperatures regularly hitting -20°C, Finland's winters are particularly cold, so pack accordingly if travelling at this time.

Geography and environment

Finland is home to large tracts of forest, a multitude of pure lakes and hundreds of islands, making it one of nature's most blessed landscapes.

The north of Finland (known as Lapland) is characterised by relatively flat terrain, demarcated by long rivers and due to its Arctic location, extreme snowfall and ice can be found, particularly in winter.

Bordering   Sweden ,   Norway   and   Russia , Finland also has long stretches of coastline along the Baltic Sea, the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Bothnia.

The coastal areas are home to thousands of rocky islands (which are mostly uninhabited) while the interior of the country is dominated by forests and lakes.

Top 5 culinary delights of Finland

1. karelian pasty.

This traditional, savoury pie can be found widely throughout Finland. Featuring a rye crust filled with rice and served with egg and butter, this is a simple yet tasty snack ideal for vegetarians.

Finland is home to some of the world's best fresh produce, and the variety of berries on offer is astounding. Blessed with ideal climatic conditions for berry-growing, visitors can expect to snap up superior tasting, fresh cloudberries, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and lingonberries, See them offered fresh at markets and shops, served alongside meals in sauces, jams and spreads or baked in delicious pies.

3. Kaalikaaryleet

These baked cabbage rolls are a standard entry on most Finnish restaurant menus. Featuring ground beef, rice, onion and cream wrapped in cabbage rolls and served with cranberry or lingonberry sauce, they may be hard to pronounce but they sure are easy to eat.

4. Graavilohi

Finland has a proud heritage steeped in fishing, so it's no surprise that the quality of seafood is very high. This simple meal of salted salmon doesn't need any dressings or condiments as the pure, natural flavours of the salmon are the main attraction.

These sweet bread treats have numerous varieties, from cinnamon, to almonds and raisins. Typically eaten with a coffee, pulla are an inexpensive cafe snack - a great, budget choice in a notoriously expensive country.

Finland’s Lake Region

Finland's southeastern region, near the Russian border, is rich with lakes and islands. While the exact number of lakes is unknown due to the challenge of defining a lake, there are over 55,000 bodies of water wider than 650 feet. Regardless of definitions, that’s a lot of water.

The area is sprinkled with summer cottages, many owned by Finns for seasonal retreats, with some available for rent. Start planning your itinerary with the enjoyable lakeside views along Route 62 from Mikkeli to Ruokolahti.

This region is ideal for experiencing the quintessentially Finnish tradition of enjoying a sauna followed by a refreshing dip in an ice-cold lake.

Nestled between two lakes, Tampere has evolved from its industrial origins into a vibrant hub of education, culture, and technology, boasting major universities and research institutes.

Arctic Finland is a prime spot for viewing the northern lights, despite the cold. For comfort, consider staying in a glass igloo at Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort. Even if the northern lights elude you, a winter visit remains a memorable one with activities like husky sled rides, exploring Sami culture, and sauna.

Known as the gateway to Arctic Finland, Oulu is a city known for its technology sector and vibrant cultural scene, featuring music festivals, museums, and art galleries.

Oulu's position by the Baltic Sea makes it ideal for bird watching. Winter in Oulu brings plummeting temperatures but great opportunities for ice skating and cross-country skiing.

Known as the ‘official hometown of Santa Claus’, Rovaniemi lies directly on the Arctic Circle. This city is a magical destination for families, offering visits to Santa Claus Village all year round.

Beyond this festive appeal, Rovaniemi serves as a hub for Arctic adventures, including snowmobile safaris, reindeer sleigh rides, and aurora hunting.

Cultural highlights include the Arktikum museum, which provides comprehensive insights into Arctic nature and the history of Finnish Lapland.

Ivalo and Inari

In the far north, Ivalo and Inari offer insights into indigenous Sami culture, with attractions like the Siida Museum and opportunities to explore the Arctic wilderness.

Inari is home to the Sami Parliament and serves as a cultural center for the Sami people, offering visitors an authentic look at the traditions and way of life of the Nordic region’s indigenous people.

Åland Islands

This Swedish-speaking archipelago at the entrance to the Gulf of Bothnia offers peaceful natural beauty, maritime attractions, and outdoor activities.

The Åland Islands are known as a summer vacation spot, popular with both Swedes and Finns for the sandy beaches, historic sites, scenic cycle paths, and quaint villages.

Mariehamn, the charming capital, serves as the heart of Åland's 30,000 residents, offering a glimpse into the islands' maritime heritage with attractions like the Åland Maritime Museum and the Pommern sailing ship.

I'm a Finnish CEO. Here's what it's like running a company in the happiest country on earth.

  • Samu Hällfors  is the CEO of Framery, an office soundproofing business in Helsinki.
  • Hällfors mirrors how he runs his company in line with Finnish values like shared responsibility.
  • He said people in Finland are hard working and candid, with strong boundaries between work and home.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a transcribed conversation with Samu Hällfors, the CEO of Framery in Helsinki. It has been edited for length and clarity.

In 2010, I worked at Logia Software Oy in an open office space. My friend and I were tired of constantly listening to our boss speak on his phone. It was impossible to focus on our work. When we brought it up, our boss responded: "Well, buy me a phone booth."

The only problem was that there wasn't one on the market. We gave up working for the software company that day, and Framery was born.

Framery is a 14-year-old company headquartered in my homeland of Finland that offers soundproof solutions for offices. Our showroom is in Helsinki, and our offices are in Tampere, Finland.

As the CEO of a company in the world's happiest country , I mirrored my company's values and policies with many of the Finnish cultural aspects I admire. Here are some ways I'm running Framery in line with those values.

Mutual responsibility makes people feel safe

There are multiple parallels between Finnish society and how we've built culture at Framery, starting with psychological safety. A few years ago, Readers' Digest published a report about a social experiment where 12 wallets were intentionally "dropped" in various cities around the world.

In Finland, 11 of those 12 wallets were returned to their owners. In Finnish society, people feel a general level of safety because the culture is focused on the collective responsibility to care for and be honest with each other, regardless of the relationship or how well we know someone. We are a close-knit community.

I try to encourage this attitude at work. I never allow my employees to feel that mistakes or failures are their fault.

Mistakes still happen. When they do, it's usually followed up with a discussion on how to remediate for the future. As long as the root cause of the mistake is not laziness or negligence, then the responsibility is shared, and there is no place for blame.

Related stories

I want my employees to feel safe exploring new ideas, taking risks, and making mistakes.

Work-life balance is a priority

The Finnish workday is usually eight hours, with a half-hour lunch break, so people have time for hobbies and leisure activities after work. In Finland, we believe there is a time to rest and work; regardless of what we are doing, we put our complete attention and concentration into it.

I make it a point to visibly leave the office toward the end of the working day and to enforce strict rules around maximum working hours so that employees can enjoy work-life balance.

Sometimes projects may require extra hours, but employees are encouraged to balance their workweek by taking time off or long weekends.

Extreme candor for the benefit of the group

The Finns are very honest and direct people. Though this may come across as naive in other cultures, we value communicating candidly, independent thinking, and bearing responsibility accordingly.

Large corporations usually have layers of bureaucracy that determine who gets access to what information. That leads to a loss of shared purpose, the idea that people within the organization are all aligned to the same mission.

At Framery, everyone gets to participate in our strategy deep dives. We share highly classified information with every employee so they have equal footing and more oversight on their day-to-day tasks. I always host the sessions, and there can be no more than 12 participants at once, so there's an opportunity to ask questions and debate.

There's the obvious risk of leaked information, but I trust my employees. I think there's a bigger risk in not telling people important information that will be helpful in their daily tasks. Plus, disclosing private employer information is illegal, and Finns understand their responsibilities toward their employer.

Celebrate independent hard work

Companies have recently become more stringent with return-to-office policies and employee tracking tools. I view this as micromanagement, which destroys the individual's sense of autonomy and purpose.

Finnish culture is deeply rooted in forward-thinking and preparation, stemming from their historical need to brace for harsh, protracted winters.

This ingrained mindset fostered a strong work ethic among the Finns, born from the understanding that diligent effort paves the way for long-term career success and longevity.

I think our employees know better than their CEO on how to structure their personal workday. Teams can decide when they want to come into the office and how they plan to execute their work. They are mandated by themselves, not by management.

Correction: April 23, 2024 – An earlier version of this story misstated the location of Framery's offices. They are headquartered in Tampere, Finland, not in Helsinki.
