The theme is set to promote the Kavango–Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area landscape which comprises of a unique conservation area that spans over Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The launch of the expo coincided with World Tourism Day, celebrated under the theme “Tourism and green investment” calling on investment in people, planet, and tourism.

Tourism Expo 2023 – Conservation Meets Tourism

Exhibitors from the 2023 Tourism Expo joint exhibition for Tourism meets Conservation

The Namibian Association of Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) Support Organisations (NACSO) took part in this year’s Tourism Expo as part of a joint exhibition with the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, Tourism Supporting Conservation, Integrated Rural Development and Nature Conservation, and The Namibian Wetlands Route. The joint exhibition brought these five organisations together; with each having a part to play in promoting Namibia's conservation tourism through regulating laws, technical support to conservancies and community forests, tourism joint venture lodges, responsible tourism and travel, and tangible benefits to local communities within these areas. The Namibia Tourism Expo has an excellent reputation for providing a centralised marketing platform bringing together conservation, tourism, hospitality, and entrepreneurship. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals in the tourism industry from various parts of the country to network and to promote local tourism.

A Tourism is for All Workshop was held where Nabot Mbeeli, the Senior Coordinator for CBNRM Projects at Namibia Nature Foundation gave a presentation on funding opportunities for youth in conservation, and Marcheline Podewilts, the manager of conservancy, gave a presentation on how conservancies operate and sustain their communities.

At the Conservation Meets Tourism stand, the participants were taken through a journey via the Namibia Conservation Tourism Airlines. Each participant received a boarding pass to experience the alliance of organisations across the tourism and conservation sector in reimagining sustainable tourism in Namibia and had an opportunity to buy essential oil products produced by locals in the Kunene region. The boarding pass initiative helped market community conservation tourism as a viable travel destination which yield returns for conservancy members. At the final destination, once guests received all stamps on their boarding pass, they entered a competition and stood a chance to win 2 night stay at one of eleven joint venture lodges within communal conservancy areas.

Congratulations to the following winners: Jimmy Aoxamus, Beatrice Masilingi, Petra Liebenberg, Johanna Paulus, Alina Nelenge, Colin Namalambo, Michelle Mchemwa, Gerhard Kasamu, Jannie Steyn, Ferdinand Katire, Frank Wittneben, and Algernon Van Wyk.

Thank you for taking part in the competition. We hope you will enjoy your stay at these amazing places as you continue to explore Namibia and contribute to community conservation and sustainable tourism.

The College of the Arts Puppets are Back Again!

The College of the Arts Puppets are Back Again!

The COTA Puppets will be coming back to life for the 2015 Windhoek Tourism Expo. These are the same puppets that brought to life the water hole scene at the very festive 25 Independence Celebration.

If you missed them at the Independence show they will be on view for a total of 5, drummer-led, parades through the show grounds.

These puppets were the brain child of Peter Kewowo, Helen Harris and Robert Narciso and were constructed with the help of 22 College of the Arts students and art enthusiasts.

They are all made out of electrical piping and were all hand bent into their unique shapes.

The animal puppets were left uncovered to show how these intricate puppets work with the puppeteers being completely visible inside the puppet.

They were a pivotal part of the 25th Independence Show in which they represented scenes of peace and stability as all of the animals walked together around the Independence Main Field and slowly came in to share the water at the water hole.

The giraffe, zebra, oryx, ostrich, lion, and elephant we be on display during 5 shows during the 2015 Tourism Expo.

Namibia Tourism Expo dates for 2015 announced

1888860_764614146904138_3913590686199695727_o

Dates for next year’s Namibia Tourism Expo have been set to take place from 10 to 13 June 2015 at the Windhoek showgrounds.

The 17th annual Namibia Tourism Expo (NTE) is organised by Republikein , Namibian Sun and Allgemeine Zeitung and is supported by all Namibian tourism organisations, including the Namibia Tourism Board (NTB).

“As in the past, our aim is to provide a platform for Namibia and the region’s hospitality industry to promote and market their products and services to all involved in the industry as well as the general public,” says Alta Bredenkamp, Public Relations Executive at Namibia Media Holdings (NMH).

Since its inception in 1999, the NTE has consistently grown and has become the premier tourist event. It has earned a superb reputation for offering the only centralised marketing platform for Namibia’s hospitality industry.

Apart from presenting a highly effective showcase for exhibitors active in tourism, the organisers have revitalised the exhibition year after year by expanding the showcase.

The NTE hosts exhibits by local, regional and international establishments and also features interactive chef’s demonstrations, Namibian arts & crafts exhibitions, food, beer & wine tasting, and a host of other fun activities to attract travel enthusiasts, foodies, friends of tourism and the general public alike.

The 2014 NTE drew 24 326 visitors, around 3 500 more than 2013, and once again proved to be a draw-card for a diverse array of business sectors and Namibians from all walks of life.

In 2014 the NTE also became the first local expo to offer all visitors free Wi-Fi access. This was made possible by a smart partnership between Paratus Telecom, Bidvest Namibia IT and NMH.

The 2014 event also saw the introduction of the NTE smartphone app which enabled visitors to rate stands and win prizes.

“We are looking forward to the 2015 event which will be bigger and bolder, placing Namibia’s tourism industry in the spotlight – an industry which is vital to the Namibian economy and the achievement of the country’s Vision 2030 goals,” Albe Botha, NMH’s Chief Executive said.

Hosea Kutako International Airport Upgraded to Category 9

The entrance of the Hosea Kutako International Airport.

WINDHOEK – The Hosea Kutako International Airport has been upgraded to Category Nine after a number of shortcomings identified by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) were addressed.

ICAO downgraded the airport from Category nine to Category five last month following an audit of the Namibia Airports Company (NAC)’s facilities at the airport.

The audit found that specific elements on two rescue and fire fighting trucks were dysfunctional; and that training records of fire and rescue personnel were not available.

As a result of the downgrade, Air Namibia could no longer operate its A330-200 fleet in or out of the Hosea Kutako International Airport the NAC rectified the shortcomings.

With the regrading Air Namibia can resume its daily flights SW 285 & SW 286 between Windhoek and Frankfurt, Germany. Continue reading Hosea Kutako International Airport Upgraded to Category 9 →

New WhatsON Windhoek website officially launched

10592878_1490913334489305_4949881101210532155_n

Namibia’s popular event website http://www.whatsonwindhoek.com has undergone an extensive facelift and expansion under its new owner Delia Magg-Thesenvitz. The new website was officially launched with a big event at the Warehouse Theatre on 5 August.

The new site which is also accessible at http://www.whatsonnamibia.com , is a platform for local initiatives to promote their events and free time facilities. But it can only work if the community makes use of the service.

About 80 invited key stakeholders of the Namibian sport, culture, entertainment and tourism industry, as well as big sponsors, were invited for a presentation of the new website.

In order to showcase the variety of things in Windhoek Delia and her team also organized a big event for the public to experience eight Namibian acts which were: the Polytech Debating Society, rock band Safe19, the Basketball Artists School, Parkour athlete Adam from PK NAM, poet Blessing Mbonambi, a delegation of Namibia’s best table tennis players, Equipped Dance Academy, and the Throne Room Drumming School.

The audience could join the action to win vouchers for a free time activity sponsored by local companies: singer Lize Ehlers and poet Slick the Dick were trying to dribble like the kids from the Basketball Artists School, model Mercedez von Cloete was showing off her drumming skills, after the match by the professionals two volunteers entertained the audience with their own table tennis performance, and four more prizes were given away to the people who recognized places in Windhoek on photos showing just a little detail of the place. MC of the night was Nunu Namises. Continue reading New WhatsON Windhoek website officially launched →

Disgrace! Air Namibia Forced to Operate Frankfurt Route from Lusaka

8278438734_43e0bd4c91_b (1)

Air Namibia will for the foreseeable future be forced to operate its Windhoek – Frankfurt route via Lusaka.

Flight SW 285 from Windhoek to Frankfurt scheduled to depart on 30th July 2014 will operate from Lusaka . Affected passengers will be flown to Lusaka with two A319- 100’s this evening to further proceed with the ferried A330.

Flight SW 286 from Frankfurt to Windhoek on 31st July 2014 will divert to Lusaka and passengers will be flown to Windhoek in the morning using the two A319-100.

“We will continue to operate in this manner for the next two weeks or until such time that the Namibia Airports Company has fulfilled the requirements,” Air Namibia said in a statement.

The recent ICAO audit on Namibia Airports Company facilities at Windhoek’s Hosea Kutako International Airport resulted in the downgrade of the airport from a category 9 to a category 5 airport. The downgrade of Hosea Kutako Airport has affected all aircraft requiring category 7 and higher rescue and firefighting services.

In response to the downgrade, Air Namibia applied to be granted exemption in order to continue its Airbus A330 operations, which exemption was granted on 24th July 2014. However, today’s review by ICAO has re-enforced the downgrade and has revoked any exemptions that might have been granted.

As a result, Air Namibia can no longer operate the A330-200 fleet in or out of Hosea Kutako Airport until such time that Namibia Airports Company has rectified the shortcomings to the satisfaction of ICAO.

Windhoek’s Hosea Kutako International Airport is owned, operated and managed by Namibia Airports Company. Air Namibia, like other airlines operating into this airport with larger aircraft will be negatively impacted by this development.

To minimise the impact of the inconvenience caused to passengers as a result of the NAC’s shortcomings, Air Namibia has in the meantime initiated the following;

“We wish to apologize for the inconvenience caused to all travellers and relevant stakeholders, and once again reiterate that this is as a result of something outside our control and not of our own making. We are committed to deliver excellent service and offer assistance to all our stakeholders despite these challenges.”

Namibia to host 11th mining expo

tourism expo windhoek

By Shania Lazarus

28 June 2024

The Chamber of Mines of Namibia will host the 11th Mining Expo and Conference from 7 to 8 August at the Windhoek Showgrounds.

According to chief executive Veston Malango, last year’s expo saw good participation but this year is expected to break the record.

“The event promises a diverse range of exhibitors showcasing cutting-edge innovations that are propelling the industry forward.” According to Malango, the expo will serve as a central hub for industry professionals, suppliers and stakeholders to connect and explore the latest developments in Namibia’s mining sector.

The expo will have a mining conference, a supplier’s platform and a business-to-business networking session. The expo’s theme, ‘Green Shoots for Namibia’s Mining Industry: a Season of Opportunity and Growth to Drive Economic Expansion’, reflects the renewed optimism surrounding the sector.

“We saw an 18,9% growth rate, pushing our contribution to GDP from 11,9% to 14,4%. This translates to not only a stronger economy but also the creation of new jobs. Direct employment within the mining sector rose by 12,6% compared to 2022.”

In 2023, the total taxes paid by the mining sector amounted to N$6,861 billion, marking a significant increase of 55,9% from N$4,401 billion in 2022.

According to Malango, a key driver of this growth is the resurgence of the global uranium market.

“This positive trend is expected to translate into increased production at Namibia’s cornerstone uranium mines. We’re also anticipating the resumption of operations at Langer Heinrich and the development of new projects, namely; Bannerman’s Etango-8 Project and Deep Yellow’s Tumas Project.”

Malango says the expo will also highlight the development of new projects in battery minerals and precious metals.

Namibia is also set to see the development of its third gold mine, the Twin Hills project, subject to regulatory approval.
