Aspen Trail is a subsidiary of Dutchmen RV which is now owned by Thor Industries. Is this an RV you want to own? In this Dutchmen Aspen Trail travel trailer review , we take a look at the available models, specifications, floor plans, and pros and cons of this RV brand . Let’s get started.

Aspen Trail Construction

Aspen Trail campers are constructed very similarly to other campers. The seamless one-piece roof is a TPO roof with 3/8 inch decking and fiberglass insulation. The interior panel is made of Lauan.

The roof is built to allow you to walk on it for cleaning and inspection.

The walls are constructed with an exterior metal panel on a wood frame with R7 thermal insulation and a Lauan interior panel as well.

Personally, I prefer to see Azdel panels for the construction of an RV, however, that does add to the cost and not all manufacturers want to use it.

Exterior Features

When it comes to standard exterior features Aspen Trail travel trailers really stand out. The Aspen campers come standard with a heated and enclosed underbelly making them a bit more comfortable when RVing in areas where the weather can get colder.

You get a power awning with LED lights. No LED lights on the 17BH model), safety glass windows, and diamond plate rock guard among many other standard exterior features.

Please note the 17BH is a model from the Aspen Trail LE series, not the Aspen Trail models reviewed here.

Here are some additional exterior features you’ll find on the Aspen Trail.

• Extended Long Rain Gutters
• Radial Tires
• Triple Entry Steps (17BH comes with single entry steps)
• 2-20 lbs Propane Bottles with Cover (17BH only 1 bottle)
• Easy Lube Chassis
• Front and Rear Stabilizing Jacks

Interior Features

Aspen Trail RVs are no slouch when it comes to interior features. You find the inside of these campers to be very well appointed with quality materials and appliances.

The interior of the Aspen Trail is 82 inches in height giving you plenty of headroom and making the inside appear much larger than it really is. That includes the slides as well which have 6-foot ceilings.

The kitchen is equipped with radius overhead cabinets, a large sink, a 3-burner range with oven (not applicable on the 17BH), nice-looking black refrigerator insets, and a high-rise faucet.

For comfort, you get a 13,500 BTU ducted A/C system and a high output furnace.

Premium Features

The Dutchmen Aspen Trail lineup of campers does have several premium features that are noteworthy.

Interior Height

The interior height of the Aspen Trail as well as other Dutchmen campers is outstanding. The overall interior height of the Aspen is 82 inches which is ideal if you have a family member who is tall. They won’t have a problem walking about the interior of the camper.

The slide-out has an interior height of 72 inches (6 feet) which although not high as the rest of the camper still gives you ample headroom.

Convertible Dinette

A unique feature of the Aspen trail is the U-shapes dinette that you can easily convert to a regular non-U-dinette whenever you need it. This dual configuration allows you to enjoy meals with the family and offer a place to play games, nap, or simply chill.

True Residential Bed

The queen bed on the Aspen Trail floor plans that offer one is a true residential-sized queen bed. It measures 60″x80″ just like you would find at home. For many couples who RV a queen bed is the minimum, they will accept.

In addition to the standard and premium features found on the Aspen Trail campers, you do have the option to order upgrade packages and optional features.

Floor Plans

Aspen Trail offers 23-floor plans. The smallest model is the 1900RBWE which has a length of 24′ 8″, sleeps 1-3 people, and has a weight of 4,268 lbs with a base MSRP of $41,192.00, but sold on RVTrader for as low as $27,999.00

The largest Aspen Trail floor plan is the 3210BHDS with a length of 36′ 10″, can easily sleep 8-10, and has a weight of 7,896 lbs. It has a base MSRP of $56,144.00 but can be found on RVTrader for about $47,000.00

It’s more than likely that you will find a floor plan suitable for your family. Whether you need bunk beds, a rear kitchen, or anything in between Aspen Trail probably has it.

Overall the floor plans are well designed and nicely decorated.

Aspen trail Pros and Cons

This is where the rubber meets the road when it comes to Aspen Trail campers. I curated reviews from various sources and including RV Insider , Pissed Consumer, and various RV forums. Here is what real owners have to say about the pros and cons of Aspen Trail

• Floor plans are functional and varied
• Interior height is very good
• Very nice interior color scheme
• Built-In BMS
• Reports of awning issues
• Floor soft spots after several years of use
• Warranty complaints

One of the recurring themes when it comes to the Aspen Trail is the quality of construction. Owners are reporting issues with the awning, soft spots that develop on the floor after several years, as well as appliances not working the way they should.

On top of that several owners have reported Dutchmen giving owners the runaround on issues that should have been covered by their 3-year warranty. Below is one of those complaints.

Even in some of the forums, I read the warranty came up several times. Having said that now the Dutchmen are owned by Thor it might be a little different.

Dutchmen Aspen Trail Review – Final Thoughts

The Aspen Trail has several things going for it. These include a great selection of floor plans, roomy interior heights, and several premium features that I mentioned above.

However, it suffers from poor quality construction, a warranty that is hard to use when needed, and doesn’t use Azdel for its walls.

Though it is affordable I would use caution when buying due to the many problems reported. If you can find a used one where any issues have been resolved by the previous owner, I would take that route instead of new.
