As you explore Villa Park stadium the only statue on show is William McGregor.  But who is William McGregor?  He was not only the first director of Aston Villa but the man who founded the English Football League.  There were twelve inaugural members of the football league including Aston Villa.  Can you name the other eleven?  Here’s a head start, Everton and Burnley are two of them.  Lastly, Aston Villa were runners up in the first ever league season back in 1888 – 1889.

Firstly, the capacity is over 42,000 seats.  However, the largest attendance is over 76,000 spectators which was before the Hillsborough incident when safety rules were not strict.  Of course, the stadium is home to Aston Villa but what else is it used for?  It hosted both 1966 World Cup and more recently Euro 96 matches.  Argentina, Spain and West Germany played here during World Cup 1966.  In addition, a massive 55 FA Cup semi finals were played here.  On to rugby, two 2015 Rugby World Cup final games were held here.  Famous musicians who have performed concerts here include; Rod Stewart, Duran Duran, Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi.

If I asked you where was the 2012 Community Shield was held? you’d probably guess Wembley Stadium .  It was in fact here at Villa Park as Wembley was in use for the Olympics.

What is a VIP match day experience like at Villa Park.  You’ll visit not only the VIP sections but also the corporate boxes.  Additionally, there’s also a kids section you’ll visit which welcomes disadvantaged kids from the area.

Prince William’s Chair

Prince William is perhaps the most famous Aston Villa fan but where does he sit when he visits the stadium?  As you tour the VIP areas of Villa Park stadium the guide will point out his seat.  As a matter of fact, you’re welcome to sit in it and enjoy the stadium views he does.

Although much of the stadium is either new or refurbished, they’ve definitely maintained a historic feel throughout.  There is no official Aston Villa museum but many historic team pictures and moments are on display throughout the stadium.

A visit to the home team dressing room is arguably the best part of the tour.  Not only can you sit by your favorite players shirt but you can also visit the fitness and massage facilities.

Home Team Facilities

As you’d imagine, the shower and ice bath facilities are decorated with Aston Villa badges.  Aston Villa fans, I’m sure you’d love to decorate your bathroom like this!

Players Tunnel

Walk down the famous Aston Villa players tunnel and onto the pitch, exactly like the players.  As a matter of fact, the tour guide plays the same music as match day.  Escape’ by Craig Armstrong is the song Aston Villa play when the teams come out.  In my opinion, it’s much better than what they play at Old Trafford !  Finally, sorry about my picture, as they were refurbishing the players tunnel when I visited but it should be complete and as aesthetically pleasing as the rest of Villa Park now!

Aston Villa – Champions League Winners

Yes, Aston Villa won the Champions League trophy in 1982.  A replica of this trophy is displayed in the players tunnel.  Alongside it are the FA Cup and old League 1 trophies which they have won a massive 7 times each!  Maybe the tour guide will remind you here that neither Arsenal , Tottenham , Newcastle United nor Man City have ever won the Champions League.

Pitch Side and Dugouts

AS part of the Villa Park stadium tour, sit in the dugouts where so many famous managers have sat.  As Aston Villa are currently a Premier League team, visitors include the best of the best such as Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola.  Previously, in the Championship, visitors included, Marcelo Bielsa and Frank Lampard.  Don’t forget to get a picture of yourself here with the famous Holte End in the background.  Once upon a time the Holte End was the largest Kop in England.

All post match interviews are held in the Aston Villa press room.  What’s more, you have access on the stadium tour where you can sit and pose for pictures.  Wouldn’t it be realistic if you had an Aston Villa shirt on for this picture!

Aston Villa have called Villa Park home since 1897, though to begin with it was actually known as Aston Lower Grounds. At the time it was a sport ground that was situated in a Victorian amusement park in the grounds of Aston Hall. Aston Hall was a Jacobean stately home and, though current Villa fans might suggest that their future looks like it will resemble a Jacobean tragedy, the stadium has a storied history.

Up until the start of the First World War the perimeter of the pitch at Villa Park was surrounded by a cycling track and was the location for numerous cycling meetings and athletic events. The now defunct UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup saw its last ever final played at Villa Park in 1999, whilst the ground is also the only one in the country to host international football in three different sports.

Villa Park Seating Plan and Where to Sit

Villa Park has stands on all four sides of the stadium and a running track around the perimeter, separating the supporters from the pitch somewhat. Where you’ll want to sit will differ depending on your strength of support.

• The Holte End – Traditionally the place for Villa’s most loyal and passionate supporters to sit, The Holte End has two large tiers and a curved structure to allow for excellent sight lines wherever you sit. Built in 1994-1995, the stand has no executive boxes but there is a large hospitality suite in the concourse area.
• The Trinity Road Stand Stand – The most recently built of Villa Park’s stands, The Trinity Road Stand is the side of the ground where you’ll find the club offices and director’s boxes. It is made up of three tiers with a row of boxes in between tiers two and three. In the corner that joins this stand with The Holte End is a three-storey pavilion structure that houses the club’s corporate hospitality.

Getting To Villa Park

Villa Park is quite easy to get to thanks to its location not far from the motorway and with train stations nearby. It’s also a friendly ground for pedestrians as the club employs a ‘traffic exclusion zone’ around the stadium on match days.

Train – There are two stations near to Villa Park. Aston Station is is about 15 minutes walk from the ground and will take about 5-10 minutes to reach by train from Birmingham New Street, whilst Witton Station is about 9 minutes from New Street and takes around 5 minutes to get to the ground from there.

Bus – The number 7 and 11 buses both stop really near to Villa Park, whilst the 65 and 67 buses both stop within walking distance of the stadium.There are also Villa Special Bus Services operated by the club.

Car – If you’re travelling from the North then leave the M6 at junction 7 before following the A34 south, then following signposts to the University Of Central England, the A4040, at which point the ground will be well signposted. From the South take the M1 to the M6 then exit at junction 6 for the A38(M). Take the first right then get onto Wilton Road from the roundabout.

By Air – Birmingham International Airport has a direct train route to Birmingham New Street where you can change to get the train to either Aston or Witton stations.

Taxi – A taxi from Birmingham Airport to Villa Park will take between 20-30 minutes and prices will vary depending on the company you use and the time of day you’re travelling. From New Street Station it will cost £10ish and take around 10 minutes, traffic depending.

Parking Near Villa Park

Aston Villa imposes a ‘traffic exclusion zone’ on match days, so you won’t be able to park all that close to the stadium. The club themselves recommend avoiding parking in residential areas, but in truth there are numerous roads you can park on that are around ten minutes walk from the ground and will be free. Having spent quite a lot of time in Birmingham, I can tell you that the people of the midlands know how to have a good time. The pubs are always busy, and none more so than these three.

Just as you’d imagine for a top end football ground, Villa Park has plenty of excellent facilities off the pitch for the match going supporter. You can expect quick service from the bars and kiosks in the concourse areas and you can be assured a friendly, exciting atmosphere.

Hospitality

Given the amount of executive boxes that Aston Villa have around the ground, it’s no surprise that the hospitality options are numerous. The club offers a host of packages targeted at pretty much every budget. You can take them up on a match by match or seasonal basis.

There are 3 restaurant and 4 lounge packages available and each takes a step up in exclusivity from the last, but all should see you very well fed before the game. If you want to go all out then the Director’s Club Premium is seriously plush. A champagne reception, a private reserved table pitchside, a 5 course menu and complimentary drinks are just some of the perks here. There will also be a Q and A with a former player.

If that all sounds a bit too fancy then either the 82 Restaurant, the McGregor Lounge, or one of the Doug Ellis box’s might be more to your liking. You will get much more privacy in one of the box’s while the restaurant is a more casual affair than the Director’s Club but still offers great food and a sense of that VIP treatment.

One slightly more unique option is the Gas Lamp Premium package, because as well as all the nice extras like meals, drinks and Q and As with former players, you watch the game from behind glass at one end of the pitch rather than on the terraces. So you can enjoy the comforts of the lounge throughout the game not just before and after it.

Private Hire

Birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and retirements, Villa Park has seen them all. The caterers have won awards and there is ample free parking near to the ground. The club can cater for parties of various sizes and you’ll also have a dedicated event co-ordinator for you to deal with directly.

Villa Park prides itself on being one of the most unique venues around for Asian Weddings as well as being a generally spectacular venue for all weddings. They also offer Christmas Party deals. There are numerous banqueting options available, too.

Stadium Tours & Museum

Tours of Villa park usually take place twice a day, Tuesday – Sunday. They are at 10.30am and 1pm. Prices are slightly higher at weekends and you can also include lunch with your ticket for an additional fee.

As well as seeing the first team dressing rooms, the post-match interview room, and the officials’ room, you’ll also walk down the tunnel to pitch side and get a chance to sit in the manager’s seat in the dugout. About Aston Villa

Aston Villa are one of the oldest clubs in English football and are one of only five English teams to win the European Cup, or the Champion’s League to give it its current name. They are also fifth in the list of clubs with major honours to their name, having won seven First Division trophies, seven FA Cups, five League Cups and the UEFA Super Cup.

Though things haven’t been great for Villa on the pitch in recent years, they still held the record for the number of players that have made international appearances for England for a long time. Their 76 was eventually topped by Tottenham, but for a club of their size, it’s impressive, and shows their contribution to the National game.

Villa Park History

Villa Park lays claim to numerous boasts, not least of which is the fact that it has hosted more FA Cup semi-finals than any other stadium – 57 matches in all. Aston Villa moved to the stadium from Wellington Road in 1897 and as well as football the ground has also hosted boxing matches, international rugby league and rugby union matches and the 2012 Community Shield match between Chelsea and Manchester City.

There is also something of a Royal connection at Villa Park. In 1924 George VI, then The Duke Of York, officially opened The Trinity Road Stand at Villa Park. 77 years later and his grandson, HRH The Prince of Wales, opened the newly renovated Trinity Road Stand. The Prince of Wales’ son, Prince William, is also one of Aston Villa’s most famous supporters.

Future Developments

Randy Learner, Villa’s hilariously named American ex-owner, promised the fans a redeveloped North Stand that would take the stadium’s capacity to 50,000 when he bought the club in 2006. Sadly these plans never led to anything much, and ten years later in 2016 Randy had sold the club. However, the new owners upped the ante and plans are in place to grow the capacity to 60,000.

Work was supposed to begin in 2023, with the North stand being demolished and rebuilt and the surrounding area developed into a multi use area that would be about more than just football, but despite planning permission being granted there have been delays due to transport concerns.

The whole situation is totally up in the air if truth be told, with the club’s business development manager suggesting in 2024 the plan to develop the North Stand may now have been scrapped, but the club’s own website still touting the idea as the bright future for Villa Park. Who knows what’s really going on, they certainly don’t seem to.

Villa Park is a football stadium in Birmingham, England with a seating capacity of 42,788 which makes it the largest ground in the Midlands area.

It has been home to Aston Villa F.C since 1897 and has hosted more FA cup semi-finals than any other stadium in England including Wembley.

Originally know as The Aston Lower Grounds, Villa Park is Aston Villa’s third stadium in the club’s history having previously played at local pitches at Aston Park (1874-1876 and Wellington Road (1876 -1897).

The largest ground in the Midlands, it is famous for hosting over 55 semi-finals of the F.A Cup.

The first match held at the ground was a friendly against Blackburn Rovers on the 17th April 1897, and during Villa Park’s inaugural season crowds averaged at around 21,000.

The new facilities matched the club’s impressive performances on the pitch, and by the start of the 1940s the club had won 6 First Division titles and 6 FA Cups.

With every major trophy won more money was invested into the facilities, and along with Everton’s Goodison Park , Villa’s stadium was regarded as one of the finest in the country.

Archibald Leitch was consulted for a redesign but his plans were disrupted until the 1966 World Cup by the outbreak of the Second World War.

Today’s modern Villa Park is very much the legacy of former chairman Doug Ellis who oversaw the conversion of the stadium to all-seating after the events of Hillsborough .

The Witton Lane Stand was built during the 1993-1994 season, The iconic Holte End a season afterwards and the main stand of the ground on Trinity Road Stand six years later in 2000.

Aston Villa currently have planning permission to rebuild the north stand which would increase the capacity to around 50,000.

However due to a lack of European football, it doesn’t appear as if this will happen any time soon. This means that the modern attendance record set of 42,877 set against Liverpool on 29th December 2009 is unlikely to be beaten.

Visiting supporters to Villa Park are housed within the northernmost section of the Doug Ellis Stand which runs for the length of the pitch on the east side.

Named in honour of the club’s former Chairman, the stand consists of two distinct tiers, sandwiched between a layer of corporate hospitality.

Split between upper and lower, the standard allocation is around 28 seats shy of 3,000, although for matches with a smaller turnout, it is just the upper-tier which gets put to use.

Above this sits the television gantry and commentators area.

The concourse within this section which is accessed by some quite steep stairs is quite cramped compared to the lower section, with a smaller amount of kiosks which results in a bigger queue for pints and pies.

Best Pubs near ground

Located around 2 miles from the city centre, Villa’s ground isn’t located in the poshest of areas and the handful of pubs around the ground such as The Aston Tavern are typically off-limits for away fans.

The closest pubs which are welcoming to away fans is The Witton Arms located 10-15 minutes north of the ground, and The Yew Tree just part Witton Railway Station.

Entry is usually £2.00 and the police are usually on hand to ensure everyone has a decent day out.

If you are catching the train first into Birmingham then the city of centre has numerous boozers such as The Square Peg which is a very large Wetherspoons well placed between New Street and Snow Hill Stations.

If you are travelling by car the “Star City” entertainment complex may be worth a look. Only a mile and half from the ground there are numerous bars, restaurants and accommodation options.

Inside the stadium itself alcohol is available to purchase including the likes of Carlsberg and Somersby Cider.

Food - Places to eat

The most numerous food options at Villa Park are the food vans which park up on the roads leading to the ground.

They tend to sell the same range of fast food options inside the concourses such as hotdogs, burgers and chips.

The “proper” fast-food stores where you’re more likely to get a kebab are all located 10 minutes north of the ground on Witton Road with the additional bonus of a large Tesco just past the roundabout.

This is good for getting cash out and for getting something healthier like a meal deal.

The ways to get to Villa Park are:

The stadium is located at Trinity Road, Birmingham B6 6HE. Car permit holders can use the Sat Nav code B6 6HE.

The fans driving from North-West or South-West should leave the M6 at Junction 7. Follow the signs for Birmingham A34, and once, you have Alexandria Stadium, leave the main carriageway and keep in the nearside lane.

If fans are coming from North East or South East, they should use Salford Junction / Lichfield Road and leave the M6 at Junction 6, signposted A38.

Fans must note that a traffic exclusion zone (TEZ) is deployed in areas around Villa Park Stadium on match-days to ensure pedestrian safety and avoid congestion. This zone includes Witton Lane, stretching from the junction with Aston Hall Road to the traffic island at Witton Road, and Trinity Road between Nelson Road and Witton Lane. This zone becomes active about 75 minutes before kick-off and stays in effect for 30-60 minutes after the game.

The primary train stations serving Villa Park are Aston Station and Witton Station. The latter is the nearest to the stadium, and only 500 metres away. The station is serviced by the line from Birmingham to Walsall line, and there are frequent services via Birmingham City Centre.

Aston Station is about 1.5 kms from stadium, and it takes about 15 minutes to cover the distance. The situation is serviced by the line from Lichfield Trent Valley to Longbridge / Redditch, via Birmingham New Street.

The primary bus routes serving the stadium are 7, 11A and 11C, and fans can take off at Witton Square. Alternatively, fans can also use services 65 and 67 to get to Aston Railway Station.

Birmingham International Airport is the closest airport to the stadium. It is 20-30 minutes drive from Villa Park by a taxi. Alternatively, fans flying in watch games can use Bus or a Train to reach the stadium.

The stadium is divided into four stands and can seat 42,785 fans.

The stands are named the Holte End (south), the Trinity Road Stand (west), the Doug Ellis Stand (east), and the North Stand (north).

All stands are two-tiered, besides the Trinity Road Stand, which has three tiers.

The Holte End, in its current form, was constructed in 1994-95 and has no executive boxes.

The inside of the stand also consists of three levels of concourse and the Holte Suite. This stand is renowned for its great atmosphere and as the home of most vocal and passionate supporters of the club.

Trinity Road Stand was built in 2000, and it is the most recently completed stand in the stadium. As stated before, it’s the only three-tiered stand in the stadium. This stand lies directly above the players’ tunnel and the technical area. The press box and the directors’ area are located in the middle tier of this stand. Trinity Road Stand also has a row of executive boxes, situated between third and second tiers.

North Stand, built in 1977, is the oldest stadium in the stadium. It was formerly known as Witton End. It contains 39 executive boxes between its two tiers.

The Doug Ellis Stand was last upgraded right before the 1996 Euro Championships. This stand also consists of a row of executive boxes between its tiers. This northern end of the stand consists of the away end, with away fans spread out across both tiers. Up to 2972 fans can sit in this section.

Other things to do around Aston Villa include:

The main pub for the away fans is Witton Arms. It is located near the roundabout on Witton Lane. The pub has separate entrances and spaces for home and away fans. On the same road, Yew Tree is another pub that is popular with away fans. Aston Tavern, opposite Aston Hall, is another decent option in the vicinity of the stadium.

Fans can find a wealth of options in the city centre. Shakespeare is famous with the visiting supporters, and it is located just outside the main entrance to the New Street Station. Sun on the Hill, Briar Rose and Wellington Pub are some of the options in the Bennetts Hill Area.

The official club merchandise store called Villa Store is located in the stadium. It is located in the Villa Village, behind the North Stand. The fans can also find the statue of former Villa chairman and Football League founder William McGregor outside the stadium. It was unveiled on 28th November 2009.

There are relatively few options to stay in close proximity of the stadium, and fans could look for a hotel in the city centre if they want a variety of options. The Holiday Inn Express, Campanile Birmingham, and Premier Inn are the closest hotels to the stadium.

The home of great football and entertainment. Traditionally and well established football club with some outstanding facilities and great welcoming to all people. I have had some great experiences coming here and hopefully many more to come.

Attended the Villa v Chelsea game, which was the 1st game with a limited number of fans allowed in during 2020. Well sign posted for the gate to enter. Queuing system for toilets, to ensure social distance. Seated in North stand upper with good views of the game and the famous Holte End. For only 10000 fans there was a great atmosphere. Under normal circumstances the ground has good bus and rail links from Birmingham and also options for parking. Food stalls can be found along Trinity road and North stand car car park. Inside the ground plenty of options to buy food and drink. Purity Ale is good. As expected prices are higher but affordable.  

Villa Park is one of the oldest stadiums in English football. However, it was not the first ground of the Midlands clubs. From 1876 until 1897, Aston Villa played their home games at Wellington Road, in the Perry Barr area. However, the club faced multiple problems such as an uneven pitch, terrible audience facilities, and excessive rents. In 1894, the club committee, in search of the club’s new home, began negotiations with the owners of Aston Lower Grounds. At the time, it was the finest sports ground in the area. Initially, it was the kitchen garden of Sir Thomas Holte, owner of Aston Hall. Holte End of the stadium was named after him. The negotiations over the ground continued for almost two years with then-owner Edgar Flower. Finally, a deal was struck to rent the Lower Grounds at £300 per annum.

Before Aston Villa shifted into their new home in 1897, they had already constructed a main-stand. This was supported by terracing on the remaining three sides. In their opening game at Villa Park, the Midlands side defeated Blackburn Rovers 3-0 in a friendly game on 17th April 1897. As Villa continued to accumulate silverware, they also carried on with the development of Villa Park over the next two decades. The First World War halted these plans briefly, but the opening of the Trinity Stand in 1923 increased the capacity of Villa Park to 80000 approximately. At the time, the newly built stand was considered one of the finest in Britain, and it hosted the first restaurant in a British football ground – The Oak Room.

Witton Lane Stand was renovated in 1964 and eventually replaced by North Stand in 1976. In 1993, the Doug Ellis stand was built, and a year later, Holte End was demolished and rebuilt. In 2000, the historic and famous Trinity Road Stand was demolished and replaced by a new stand with the same name.

There have been discussions about rebuilding North Stand in the same vein as the Trinity Road Stand. In 2017, the club announced that they are considering multiple plans to increase Villa Park’s capacity up to 60000.

Villa Park has hosted some significant international and club games over the years. It has the honour of being the first English stadium to host international games in three different centuries.

Villa Park hosted three fixtures in the 1966 World Cup and four during 1996 Euros. The Three Lions played their first game at Villa Park in 1989.

When it comes to club football, the stadium has hosted 55 FA Cup semi-finals. In 1999, it hosted the final of the last ever European Cup Winners’ Cup. From 2001-2005, Villa Park handled the duties of hosting FA Cup finals as Wembley Stadium was construction.

Villa Park has also hosted other sports such as Cricket, Athletics and Cycling (before the first world war), Boxing, Rugby League etc. In 2015 Rugby World Cup, Villa Park hosted a couple of group games.

Villa Park has also been used as a venue for a numerous non-sporting events such as music concerts and preaching sermons.

Bruce Springsteen played a couple of shows at Villa Park as part of his famous Tunnel of Love tour in 1988. Duran Duran, Bon Jovi, Rod Stewart, and Belinda Carlisle are some other artists that have played at Villa Park.

Aston Villa Football Club allow stadium tours for its fans. Currently, there are two kinds of tours available on the club’s official website . The Weekday Tour is available for £15 and the Weekend Tour is available for £18 for adults.

Both tours include Pitchside/Dugout Access, Backroom Access, Press Conference/ Media Centre Access, Photo Opportunities, In-store Discount (10%), and a Villa Lanyard. Fans are guided by a stadium expert on these tours.

The official website has listed Legends Tour, wherein fans would be guided by a club expert, as coming soon.

Samuel Iling-Junior reveals why he left Aston Villa to join Bologna

English winger Samuel Iling-Junior has explained why he decided to sign for Bologna just weeks following his move from Juventus to Aston Villa .

The 20-year-old is a Chelsea youth product who then made his big splash at the Allianz Stadium. Former Juventus manager Max Allegri decided to promote him from the Next Gen squad to the first team in October 2022.

However, the youngster wasn’t part of Thiago Motta’s plans, so the Bianconeri decided to include him, alongside Enzo Barrenechea in the swap deal that saw Douglas Luiz arrive at Continassa.

But after failing to convince Aston Villa manager Enai Emery, Iling-Junior opted for a swift return to Serie A. He revealed that a conversation with the Spanish manager was enough to convince him to pack his bags and leave Birmingham.

“I played a few games for Aston Villa in the summer, then I spoke to the manager and I understood that there wasn’t much space for me. And since I appreciate honesty, I preferred to look for a team where I could have more playing time,” said the youngster during his unveiling via TuttoMercatoWeb .

The winger also explained that Vincenzo Italiano and the Champions League lure were two factors that pushed him towards Bologna .

“Here in Bologna there is a good project, as I had already seen last season. In the summer I moved to Aston Villa then came the offer from Bologna , a city I like with a manager I respect and I decided to come here.

“The emotion of the Champions League is always special. It was beautiful. I was already struck by the atmosphere and the fans last season.”

The Englishman also remains grateful for Allegri who helped him improve defensively.

“I have to thank Allegri a lot. He helped me understand the defensive phase. With Mister Italiano, we always put so much energy on the field, and this is the type of football I like.”

Villa’s return to the top table of European football was overshadowed by Monday’s death of Shaw, a golden boy of the club’s past success at this level when he helped them to European Cup glory in 1982.

“Of course we want to dedicate this victory to Gary Shaw, his family and all of the Aston Villa family.

“We want to try to get in our way and follow what that team achieved.”

The Prince of Wales also paid tribute to Shaw.

Villa fan William tweeted: “The last time @AVFCOfficial won in the top European competition, it was the month before I was born. Let’s hope tonight is the first step towards another European adventure!

“My thoughts this evening are also with Villa legend Gary Shaw’s friends and family following his passing yesterday.”

Goals from Tielemans and Ramsey in the space of 11 first-half minutes gave Villa control after Young Boys had started strongly.

Ollie Watkins had a goal disallowed for handball in the build-up, with Jhon Duran also seeing an effort scrubbed out for the same reason.

Onana killed the game in the final 10 minutes to give Villa the perfect start.

“We were adapting at the beginning to the plastic pitch, it’s very different,” Emery added. “We were losing some balls, they were attacking.

“We defended well and Emiliano (Martinez) was doing his work. We were feeling better on the pitch, getting in the box and creating some chances and scored from a set-piece then we were feeling confident.

“But it’s very, very important how we got the win – by respecting the opponent and being responsible.

“The players were mature, organised and imposing throughout the game.”

Emery played down injury fears for England striker Watkins, who came off on the hour and was pictured with ice on his heel.

“He’s working well, he played well and I decided to change him like another player. He’s OK,” he said.

Young Boys coach Patrick Rahmen knew his side had to be perfect to have any chance.

“Of course we are disappointed, we had great plans for tonight,” he said.

“We started the match well and we played well for the first 30 minutes. We needed the perfect game tonight and we didn’t manage it. We deserved to lose.”

Gary Lineker highlighted the performances of Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers against Wolves as Aston Villa proved they are capable of balancing Champions League and Premier League duties.

Villa were dealt a shock when Matheus Cunha put the visitors ahead at Villa Park on Saturday, and that was how the scoreline remained for almost an hour afterwards. However, those who have had influence in recent weeks turned on the style in the final 20 minutes and prompted a second top-flight win after initially trailing in as many weeks .

"On the pitch they came from behind again, which was a good effort," Lineker began in review on The Rest is Football podcast . The pundit then spoke about the club's return to Champions League football this campaign, which began with a 3-0 win against Young Boys in Switzerland last Tuesday, as prior to the season starting the requirement to handle multiple matches weekly was seen by many as an acid test for Unai Emery 's side either advancing to match the level of their top-four rivals or halting entirely in their tracks.

Of course there are still several rounds of European football to go mixed in with domestic duties across the next four months, but upon first glance the former striker is content with what he has seen.

He continued: "They travelled into Europe as well in midweek and it looked like it might have been a bit tired on the end of it. Wolves played really well and scored a terrific goal but Villa, a bit like they did against Everton , came back. They weren’t very good in the first half, were a little off it, looked a little bit jaded and Wolves were really good. But they came strong and you sort of thought ’if they get one [they will go on to win it]."

Lineker associated the team's ability to fight on multiple fronts with Watkins , who after failing to net in the opening three weeks of the campaign has now registered three goals since overcoming a fitness scare during the international break, and Rogers . The 22-year-old has played a key role in the opening months of the 2024/25 campaign and finally grabbed his first contributions - two assists, one for Watkins - against Wolves.

"Watkins has found his goalscoring feet, two weeks ago that probably would have gone over the bar," he added. "And I will tell you have was good again - Morgan Rogers. Really, really good. He was probably the one who turned it around more than anyone else."

Co-pundit Alan Shearer concurred with the latter, stating: "He’s been fantastic in this early part of the season."
