July is a great month to travel. School is out, work is slow, and there are a ton of bargains to be had. If you're setting your sights on a cheap tropical destination (hello, the Caribbean and The Bahamas ), you'll find a steal when it comes to airfare and hotel stays.

With uber-hot and often stormy conditions in these destinations at this time, resorts are almost begging people to stay. Other popular places to visit like New Orleans and Phoenix are also worth a trip, although be prepared for intense heat.

That said, what's a little heat when you'll be saving oodles? With all that extra cash on hand, you may even be able to book another holiday. So pack extra sunscreen and drink more water; you'll be happy you booked a trip in July.

Find the top places to visit with our list of the best cheap places to travel in July.

1. Niagara Falls, Canada

Rainbow over Horseshoe Falls, Niagara Falls

Summer is among the most popular times to visit Niagara Falls, one of Ontario's most popular attractions . It's warm, the grass is a vibrant green, and colorful blooms dot the already spectacular scenery. Despite these pluses, a visit to Niagara Falls in July is one of the most affordable trips you can take to a world-famous site, especially if you live within driving distance.

Not close enough for a road trip? No worries. You can also find savings on airfare at this time of year since there are numerous flights available to accommodate the influx of tourists. The catch for the savings is that you have to plan ahead, especially if you are traveling with a family. Hotels are plentiful at Niagara Falls but it's best to book in advance.

You get double benefits by traveling to Niagara Falls in July — bundled rates and the best weather. While the dead of summer is hot, you will enjoy the refreshing mist coming from the falls and the breeze from the elevation. This is the top waterfall in Canada , and one of the best in the world, so expect crowds no matter when you visit.

While you can find steeper discounts for hotels during winter, the weather limits what you can see and do at that time. In July, visitors can take advantage of the full spectacle of the Maid of the Mist , discount passes to the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens , and the free hop-on hop-off Discover Niagara shuttle that travels to 17 top Niagara attractions .

Aerial view of Pansee Beach, Phuket

It's easy to see why Phuket is one of the most popular destinations in Thailand . It is lined with glorious beaches ; packed with food so delicious, you'll struggle to stop eating; and it's relatively cheap when compared with other tropical and exotic destinations. Another bonus: visiting in July will leave you with wads of extra cash due to the great deals on hotels and airfare.

This verdant isle is only an hour flight from the famous attractions of Bangkok , and its beaches have a lot of notoriety, especially after recovering from the devastating 2004 tsunami, which destroyed the island's infrastructure, tourism, and thousands of lives. Phuket has bounced back and remains a stunning and memorable vacation spot.

This pretty isle is also packed with enough tourist attractions to keep families and couples of all ages happily entertained.

No good deal goes unpunished, so you should expect some rain when traveling in July. The weather can be unpredictable at this time of year; it's the heart of monsoon season. Despite the iffy weather, you can still plan boat tours, spa experiences, visits to temples, and walks along the white sands of Nai Harn Beach and Kata Noi Beach .

Cactus in the desert near Phoenix

This southwest US city is one of the most stunning places to visit in the United States . And if triple-digit heat doesn't bother you, visiting in July will garner savings so attractive, you won't care that your T-shirt sticks to your body the moment you step outside.

There are many golf courses, luxury resorts , and world-class spas in Phoenix that normally charge outstanding fees to their typically elite clientele. July is not the most desirable time to visit because of the sweltering temperatures, so it is the best time to snag the discounts and perks that these places have to offer.

Since the Phoenix heat is draining, you will want to limit your time outdoors if you plan to hike to Camelback Mountain or visit the Phoenix Zoo . That said, there are so many fabulous hiking trails in the area , that you'll be tempted to brave the heat anyway.

If you visit in July, you can take advantage of the city's top tourist attractions , including indoor museums like the Musical Instrument Museum , Phoenix Art Museum , or the Historical Heard Museum .

Phoenix also has an abundance of indoor shopping opportunities nearby. You may also want to consider doing some day trips to nearby destinations like Sedona , Prescott , or Flagstaff , which boast a little cooler climate.

Montego Bay, Jamaica

Everything's better in Jamaica. Soft, sandy beaches massage tired feet; turquoise waters help visitors float away stress; and life slows enough to allow travelers to completely relax. No wonder so many people flock to Montego Bay for a holiday.

While the price of a visit in winter can be high, traveling to Montego Bay in July will do wonders for your bank account. Due to the excessive heat and propensity for rain (and a possible hurricane) at this time, huge savings can be had on everything from hotels to airfare.

Obviously, this isn't the best time to visit Montego Bay, or Jamaica in general, for weather, but the savings make traveling at this time more than worthwhile.

While you're here, be sure to take full advantage of Montego Bay's top tourist attractions — head out rafting on the Martha Brae River , lounge on Doctor's Cave Beach , and visit the Rose Hall Great House .

Lucaya Beach on Grand Bahama Island

It is not much of a surprise that a Bahamas vacation is cheap in the summer , given that it is mostly popular over the winter months, when tourists in the Northern Hemisphere want to escape cold weather.

It is possible to find good Bahamas vacation discounts throughout the year due to resort competition on the island, but July is a great month to snag even steeper discounts. You can also find great flight deals to the Bahamas in July , as the airlines are trying to fill seats during this less popular time of the year.

The capital of Nassau is packed with fun attractions and has many all-inclusive resorts that offer discounted packages during the hottest months in hopes of luring vacationers looking for a deal. You can save at Nassau's best resorts at this time, and find additional deals with free nights, resort credits, and discounts to attractions that are often added incentives for travel.

Take your pick from more than 700 islands in the Bahamas and enjoy the beaches, parks, snorkeling, boat trips, or the area's top attractions like Atlantis on Paradise Island .

Aerial view of Bavaro Beach, Punta Cana

Fewer travelers make their way to Punta Cana in July. A popular place to visit for winter revelers, this lovely Dominican Republic spot averages highs in the upper 80s to mid-90s and experiences rain nearly 24 days of the month.

That said, this shoulder season month is a great time to visit if you're looking for a deal. Plus, the rain usually comes hard and fast towards the end of the day, clearing up soon after it begins. For those traveling with kids, that's a welcome time to take a rest in one of the area's best family resorts, which will offer great deals.

In July, travelers can visit Punta Cana's best beaches, some of which are among the top beaches in the Dominican Republic , without having to rub elbows with guests in the next beach chair. They can save loads on rooms at top beach resorts and even more on their airfare to get here. With all that extra cash, it's easy to splurge on fun things to do like eat good food, head out on a guided tour, or play a few rounds of golf.

Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, Mazatlan

If you are looking for a cheap summer vacation in Mexico , the once-celebrity playground of Mazatlan is one of the best deals in July. Mazatlan is not as popular is its Mexican counterparts in Puerto Vallarta , Cancun , or Cabo San Lucas , which makes it a nice and cheaper alternative.

If visiting in July, you can get some rooms for as little as 40 USD a night, maybe a bit more than that at some of the city's top resorts. The downside is that summer in Mazatlan is in the middle of the rainy season, so you have more likelihood of rainstorms.

One of the best spots to visit (rain or shine) is Old Mazatlan , one of the city's landmark attractions , which has historic relics like the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception church, small eateries, and beautiful architecture. Of course, you will spend a lot of time on the beaches at Playa Olas Altas or the less crowded beaches at Isla de la Piedra .

Mazatlan has many walkable areas, which will help your budget by saving on transportation costs around the city.

Downtown New Orleans at night

It is not a surprise that midsummer offers up big discounts in the Big Easy . This is actually the worst time to visit New Orleans. In July, the city is hot, humid, and rainy, but if none of that bothers you then you can enjoy a cheap and fun summer vacation to the city to check out the famous jazz clubs, the historic French Quarter , great museums, and outstanding Cajun cuisine.

A July stay in one of the top resorts can be about 50 percent less than the same room during the high tourist season that runs from February through May when many of the big festivals are happening.

While there is no shortage of things to do or attractions to visit in New Orleans, a July vacation means fewer crowds, so you can enjoy some of the most famous stops, like Frenchman Street and a walking tour in the Garden District . You can also take advantage of better access to some of the cemetery tours and the New Orleans Swamp Tours , which can be tough to do in the high season.

The Great Blue Hole

A discount vacation in Belize requires some careful timing. July is a good time to go if you are looking for discounts because it comes after the high tourist season in April and the sweltering temperatures and humidity in the spring. While this isn't the best time to visit Belize for the weather, it is the cheapest time to schedule a trip.

Since July also comes before the rainiest months of August through October, you can get great rates at hotels and on excursion packages. The island of Ambergris Caye is the most popular destination in Belize, but you can research other locations, like San Ignacio , for vacation discounts as well.

The caution for traveling to Belize in July is that it is in the hurricane season, and you are likely to see some rainfall during your trip. It is also important to research the tourist attractions and things you want to do ahead of time since some of them close during the low tourist season.

Otherwise, planning ahead can net you great savings in Belize, so you can see the famous Great Blue Hole and the Hol Chan Marine Reserve near the barrier reef. Be sure to make time to enjoy the gorgeous beaches between rain showers.

Even when planning a trip to Belize in the off-season, you will want to secure hotel rooms and look for deep discounts for summer far in advance.

Camels in front of the Pyramids of Giza

Few travelers feel that saving money is worth visiting Cairo in the midst of crazy Egyptian heat. But for those who do care about scoring a great deal, July can be one of the cheapest times to visit Cairo . The July rates at hotels drop significantly, which makes it more affordable to stay in some of Egypt's top resorts .

The heat, combined with very little rain, can make walking the streets and winding alleys of Cairo a little uncomfortable, but you can plan your itinerary so that you have a mix of indoor and outdoor activities.

Book excursions to the city's top tourist attractions , like the Pyramids of Giza , or visit the Great Sphinx , on half-day treks instead of spending a full day under the scorching sun. You can also look into vacationing in the coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh , which will have cheap July rates, too.

Pura Tanah Lot Temple at sunset in Bali, Indonesia

The best time to visit Bali is between April and November, when the country is at its driest and least humid. Yes, this is considered high season for this Indonesian paradise, but Bali is an affordable destination to visit at any time of year , especially when compared with other enticing Asian and European destinations.

Take advantage of the great weather to enjoy some of Bali's most popular (and free) things to do — soak up some rays on the island's elysian beaches , watch the sunset at Pura Tanah Lot , or climb Mount Batur . Then relax in a plush resort set in the jungle or on the beach.

The Ubud Monkey Forest is worthy of a visit, and it won't set you back too much coin. Also known as the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, it's one of Bali's most lush and captivating attractions .

View across Biscayne Bay to Miami at dusk

Miami, Florida is a city that never sleeps, and while it is a hot destination to visit at almost any time of the year, you can find some of the lowest hotel rates (and highest temperatures) in the summer.

The heat and humidity of Miami in the midsummer months, not to mention the potential for hurricanes, push away many tourists, so the city's top resorts are often scrambling to fill rooms. If you plan for some pool time to cool off, the deal might just be worth it.

Since Miami has a major international airport, you should also be able to score great rates and an abundance of availability for flights into the city.

Whether you want to fill your vacation with hours spent sitting on the sands of the city's most beautiful and vibrant beaches (hello, Miami Beach ), hit the most popular tourist attractions like the Miami Zoo or Everglades National Park, stroll through cultural neighborhoods like Little Havana, or visit the many museums in town, there are enough fun things to do to fill your itinerary no matter what the weather.

Palm-lined beach at Nha Trang

Pretty much anywhere you want to go in Asia in July will have cheap prices on airfare, hotels, and resorts since it is in the rainy season, but if you want to improve your odds for a drier getaway, Nha Trang is one of your best options.

This city in Vietnam has its own weather patterns that do not produce as much rain during the rainy season, which often waterlogs the rest of the country. You can find cheap prices at hotels close to the beach , and the cost of things like food and services are also cheap, which will add to the savings.

Nha Trang is a coastal city and one of the best places to visit in Vietnam . There are plenty of beautiful beaches to enjoy, and excursions that can take you on the water for a leisurely boat trip , snorkeling, or diving . The city's tourist attractions are also worthy of a visit at this time.

Temperatures are hot in July, so you can mix up the outdoor adventures to temples, the Vinpearl Amusement Park , and the Hon Khoi Salt Fields with indoor visits to the National Oceanographic Museum of Vietnam and other local museums. Due to the low tourist season, you might also be able to negotiate discounted prices with local tour operators.

Sydney Harbour and the Sydney Opera House

Wintertime in Sydney means steep discounts on things like flights and hotels when the tourists have gone home for the season. This small summer window between June and August is a great opportunity to save about 40 percent on lodging compared to peak-season rates.

Besides saving money by traveling to Australia in July, you will also get a break on the heat and the tourist crowds at major attractions like the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney's beautiful beaches .

Even during the Sydney winter, you can still enjoy the stunning Sydney Opera House , Royal Botanic Garden, and the Australian National Maritime Museum . You will have more flexibility and opportunities to visit these attractions in the off-season before the major tourist crowds start arriving again in December.

21 Cheap destinations for 2024 with great weather in July

July of 2024 looks to be another very busy one as so many people were unable to go anywhere for a few years. This is always a busy travel season but there are still some great bargains this month all around the world. The list below includes 21 of the best places to visit in July and many of them have much better weather this month than you’d probably expect. Many of the best places to visit in July will have festivals and events going on, and in many cases it’s better to avoid those unless you are sure you want to join in.

Another thing to consider is the July heat. Most of the places on the list below have relatively mild climates and air conditioning is common indoors, but it still might be necessary to adjust your schedule if you want to hike through a national park, for instance. In fact, many popular July destinations in the Mediterranean area and Asia get very quiet in the afternoon hours and things really get going again at night.

Hotel prices in 2024 are actually lower in many of the places listed below than they were in 2023 and years earlier. Included on the list below are places where you can get a 4-star hotel for US$21 for two people including tax, and an all-inclusive resort including alcohol for under US$100 per night.

The Americas

Most of the Caribbean remains pretty cheap this month and the weather is better than most people realize in summer.

The Caribbean

It’s also worth noting that while the hurricane season technically begins in June, it’s very rare to have hurricanes before August, so July is a pretty safe month. Also, the weather tracking is so much better these days that we hear about possible storms at least 4 or 5 days before they hit, so there is always plenty of time to get out of the way if you are so unlucky that one is headed in your direction in July.

The all inclusive resorts are looking like amazing bargains this July as well. Punta Cana is one of the places where 4-star beach resorts are VERY different from family-run 3-star hotels and the room rates reflect that. Most people should probably book a chain hotel because they offer amazing value, especially the all-inclusive places.

Better still, there are quite a few all-inclusive resorts in the greater Cancun area (which also includes Playa del Carmen and the island of Cozumel just to the south), and those are often at bargain prices as well. Most people forget about places like Cancun during the warmest summer months, which is exactly why you get great value along with pleasant warm weather. And by the way, while July is technically part of the wet season, it’s actually pretty dry so you’d be unlucky to even get some afternoon showers, much less a real thunderstorm in July. Consider Tulum, which is a bit south of Playa del Carmen, if you’d prefer a smaller and more creative resort town. In fact, because the Cancun area is so large and popular, I wrote an article on choosing where to stay in the Cancun area so you can find the place that suits your style the best.

This list is all about “cheap destinations” and most of Europe, especially in the north, is anything but cheap. The other complication is that most Europeans themselves take month-long holidays in July or August, so most of the better destinations in their south will have peak-season hotel rates. Still, there are a few worth looking into.

If you are pretty sure that you want to go to Europe this year you’ll be interested in our list of the best Europe destinations in July . That list includes some cities that aren’t quite as cheap, but are pretty amazing and worthwhile.

Most of Europe’s beach areas are packed and expensive in July, but some are still affordable. Check our list of the cheapest beach destinations in Europe for some good possibilities.

  • La Rambla pedestrian zone is fun day or night
  • Sandy beaches located within the city
  • Port complex with great dining, shopping, and activities
  • Nightlife that rivals Madrid and is among Europe’s finest

cheap destinations to travel in july

Obviously this is a very popular destination for Europeans and even the Spanish themselves during summer, so booking early is the key once again. If you just turn up and try to go door to door you’ll probably end up paying a shocking amount for a place that isn’t all that great. It’s worth noting that summer crowds in Barcelona have become almost overwhelming in recent years, so it might be better to consider Valencia or somewhere else a bit less popular. Valencia also has beaches within the city limit and it’s WAY less crowded than Barcelona. Spain also has countless other beach towns, most notably the Costa del Sol near Malaga, and Malaga itself.

One of the other features of Lisbon is a group is hostels that try to outdo each other and are very popular as a result. The crowds, however, will be ridiculous during July and August. Prague is almost like Venice in that all the main thoroughfares are so jammed with fellow tourists that it can nearly take the fun out of things. With this in mind, it’s wise to start early for the main attractions and then go to some of the weird places in the afternoons.

Krakow, Poland

Krakow highlights

  • Lovely old town zone surrounded by a large, green park
  • Wawel Castle complex right in the city center
  • Great hearty food and hotels that can be surprisingly cheap for Europe
  • Lively nightlife and culture with a diverse crowd on weekends
  • The easy day trip to Auschwitz is unforgettable

The strategy here would be to make a reservation for a hotel or hostel as early as possible to lock something in. Especially during July and August, it could cost you if you just turn up and start going door to door. When all the popular places are full the less popular ones will jack their prices up. Being within walking distance of the historical walled city is ideal because you’ll be spending much of your time there anyway.

  • Pleasant seaside summer weather with sea breezes
  • Much cheaper than nearby Italy or even Dubrovnik

Hotel prices in Split are much higher in 2024 than they were the previous year, especially in the 4-star category. It could be that it’s becoming even more popular with Germans and Nordic visitors. Either way, it’s worth booking well in advance and definitely considering an apartment (soba) instead of a traditional hotel here.

cheap destinations to travel in july

This city had been getting a bit expensive until a few years ago when economic troubles started pushing the currency down and discouraging some visitors, and now Istanbul is an amazing bargain again. The well located hotels and hostels are actually relatively expensive during summer, although still cheap by most standards. If your budget is tight you’ll want to book early for the best deals in the best locations. Many potential tourists have decided to avoid Turkey while there seems to be a bit of political instability, but the tourist areas all seem to be safe so I would check the headlines and then visit anyway.

Middle East

Much of the Middle East is crazy hot during July, and even those places can get crowded this month, but there are still a few good choices to consider.

Beirut, Lebanon

  • July avg high: 84°F/29°C
  • July avg low: 73°F/23°C

cheap destinations to travel in july

This is one of the more expensive months for hotels in Beirut, so you should definitely try to book as far in advance as possible. There are some bargains out there, but they are likely to be full well in advance. Beirut actually has a couple of fairly cheap hostels, so that’s something to consider if the hotels in your price range are looking sold out.

NOTE: As of 2024, Lebanon is a country that you don’t want to visit for kicks due to political turmoil, shortages, and general instability. We will keep it on the list for the moment and hope that it’s better in 2025.

Tel Aviv, Israel

  • July avg high: 85°F/29°C

Tel Aviv highlights

  • Great beaches and a fun, modern city
  • Day trips to Jerusalem and Bethlehem are easy, among others
  • Old Port Tel Aviv area
  • Nachalat Binyamin Pedestrian Mall and Bauhaus buildings
  • Great food and interesting nightlife

cheap destinations to travel in july

The strategy is the same, with booking as early as possible advised, and looking into the hostel scene if the hotels appear to be out of your price range. At least the food prices stay quite reasonable during summer, so once you find a bed things shouldn’t get too out of hand.

Note: Needless to say, Tel Aviv is another destination that is probably best avoided by most people in 2024. The hotels are generally open in spite of the war, but there are going to be better choices for almost any of us.

Asia is usually the king of cheap destinations with great weather for most of the year, but July is still in the middle of the rainy season for most of the tropical cities, as well as for Beijing and Hong Kong. Those who like to take their chances could actually have a great and cheap trip by going almost anywhere in Southeast Asia. It’s a bit cooler than in April and May, and most of the rainfall comes suddenly, plus it’s usually easy to get out of the way.

>>> 9 Best Asia destinations in July  rather than just the cheap ones.

Kuta, Bali, Indonesia

  • July avg precip: 2.0″/5.0cm

Bali highlights

  • Great sandy beaches and good surfing in many areas all around the island
  • Fascinating temples and monuments, even near the hotel areas
  • Shockingly cheap hotels, with really good and cheap food and reasonable drinks
  • Fascinating Hindu culture and music
  • Excellent resorts in Nusa Dua, which is also uncrowded and more private

cheap destinations to travel in july

One challenge that Bali does have these days is traffic problems, so it’s probably best to minimize overall touring of the island, or at least the triangle between Kuta, Sanur, and Ubud. There are plenty of lesser-known beach areas around the perimeter, so those just wanting to soak up the sun have lots of great options. Some of the best beaches in July can be found on Bali, however it’s still probably better to choose one place and spend most of your time there to avoid the traffic.

Bali had been almost completely closed during the first two years of the pandemic, and its tourism industry almost collapsed. Now that they are welcoming visitors again the prices are lower and the crowds are smaller as well. Hotel prices in 2024 are still shockingly low so this could be a good year to visit and splurge a bit on something nicer than you are used to.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

  • July avg precip: 5.0″/12.5cm

Kuala Lumpur highlights

  • Intoxicating mix of Malay, Chinese, and Indian cultures
  • Modern business district that is still very lively with great shopping
  • Very cheap 4-star hotels for a large Asian city, especially in July
  • Excellent food at surprisingly good prices, including international places
  • Nearby temples and important sights that are cheap and easy to reach

cheap destinations to travel in july

Nevertheless, those who book hotels in advance can often get great deals even during the high season. This city curiously has some of the cheapest 5-star hotels in the world, so those who really want to indulge themselves on more of a 3-star budget should look into the high-range options here. It’s also worth noting that KL is built for its climate and you can travel long distances in the city center in elevated tunnels and within malls, so you can easily avoid the heat or rain if you need to.

Still, if you are looking for a cheap place to spend a few weeks on a nice beach during July, it would be hard to do better than Nha Trang. Hotels for around US$20 are easy to find, although they’ll be at least a block or two from the beach. The drinks are cheap and the nightlife is good here, so it’s worth considering for the right type of cheapskate traveler.

Please suggest countries to visit from Qatar during Eid holidays in July to avoid hot summer including budgeted hotels and air travel.

' src=

That is really a tough one. In order to get cooler temperatures you have to get far away from the equator or go way up in altitude. Unfortunately, both of those options tend to be expensive from Qatar in July. I think going to Poland would be one of the better and more affordable options. It can still be a bit warm there in July, but WAY cooler than Qatar or anything else closer. Krakow is the best place to focus on and it’s quite cheap as well as lovely.

Of course it’s even cooler in Sweden and Norway and Iceland, but also VERY expensive, especially that time of year. Sorry there isn’t a better answer for you and good luck. -Roger

Great post. Racking my brains, I have time to fly out in two days from SFO (San Fransisco Bay Area) for about a month. Would love to find a mid size city where I can rent an apartment easily, gain internet access and enjoy weather 60-85 degrees f. Reasonable to lower priced would be ideal. I like cities like Chiang Mai, Medelllin. I speak conversational Spanish so that makes certain countries easy. Quite tempted to check easter Europe but might save until May of next year to avoid the crowds, unless I can find a quiet/cheaper part of the area. Thanks for any additional insight if you have any! Need to decide!

' src=

If you want constant spring-like temperatures I can’t think of anywhere better than Medellin, as you’ve mentioned. I’ve yet to make it there myself but I know some expats who live there and people rave about it, especially value for money and weather. Chiang Mai would be a great choice in spring or autumn, but it’s very hot there now. You might also consider Mexico since you speak some Spanish. Mexico City itself has mild summer temperatures and the central neighborhoods are really nice and affordable. It’s anything but a “mid size” city though.

As for eastern Europe, as long as you avoid the major ones like Prague and Budapest, it won’t be too crowded. You could even consider Krakow, which is a fantastic and very affordable place. Or you could choose a random city in, say, Czechia such as Pilsen, and look for an Airbnb there. I actually lived in a city called Nis in Serbia for almost 5 months and I enjoyed it very much. It can get a bit hot there, but not bad and it won’t be crowded because it’s a big university city so many students will be gone. Sarajevo is much more interesting and also very pleasant. I hope this helps. I’ve been studying this exact thing for many years and I’m happy to help more if you need it. -Roger

Mexico City is always fun as well as Guadalajara in the centro. I always felt safe there but for now days i would not advise walking outside certain areas at night, days are fine.

Admin, I think you forget to mention about Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. It is the prime beach and tourist town in Bangladesh, situated alongside the Sea beach of Blue Sea known as Bay-of-Bengal, beside Indian ocean. And everybody know that travailing in Bangladesh is very cheap!

So, I hope you must include Cox’s Bazar in you site with this post or another post.

Thank you for the comment. It’s not that I forgot about Cox’s Bazar, it’s that I’ve never heard of anyone going there on a leisure trip. I’m sure many people from Bangladesh and from some nearby countries go there, but it seems to get tiny numbers compared to, say, Goa. Also, as I look now, July is the rainiest month and it gets more rainfall on average than most cities get in a whole year. So even if I did list it, it wouldn’t be in July. I will look into it more though, and I might add it to the winter months, when it looks like the weather is far better. -Roger

Which would be the best place to travel from Dubai.Any suggestion?

From Dubai you can cheaply fly into Europe, so any of the European cities listed above could be good value with great weather. And you can also cheaply fly into Thailand, Malaysia, or even to Indonesia from Dubai. You’ll be in perhaps the world’s best airline hub, so you can fly nonstop to almost anywhere. -Roger

The temperatures in Ecuador seems perfect for summer in comparison to America. Thanks for the post, and safe travels.

' src=

Another good city is Bogota, Colombia which has similar weather like Quito, Ecuador. A bigger city with more places to see and more things to do. Thank you.

' src=

Thank you I’ll go to Turkey 😉

Yes, Cristina, those are good points. I was surprised to hear my brother in Germany considering going to Bulgaria with his family this summer.

And it sounds like you got unlucky with the heat in Budapest since the averages are much lower than that. Also, Budapest is still cheaper than Paris or Rome, so it still makes this list.

Romania does sound nice for the low budget types who like to camp. I’ll have to do more research on those sorts of things soon. Thanks. -Roger

' src=

Bulgaria is , indeed, a very cheap destination during summer. And they have a lot of packages available which make your jaw drop. However, I wouldn’t go there for the sunbathing. I want to see the Balcik Castle though. I’ve been to Budapest in August (2007) and it was soooooo hot. Think of 35-40C hot. Not to mention that the city isn’t that cheap anymore. Right now the prices are going up which puts Budapest on the list of “we’ll see if autumn will be cheaper”. Romania is also a good choice in July IF you avoid the Black Sea and the very well known mountain resorts. Just head to a secluded area and you can get away with 10 euro/night/2 persons in a camping hut.

Here are the 26 great places to visit in July...

The best july destinations for nature and ideal weather, 1. madeira and the azores, portugal.

July is one of the hottest months of the year in Portugal , with average temperatures of 24°C during the day. The Portuguese islands of Madeira and the Azores in the North Atlantic are a few degrees cooler, but all three destinations are ideal if you’re seeking the sun.

Nicknamed the Floating Garden of the Atlantic, Madeira is in bloom all year round. As the name suggests, Pride of Madeira – a bush with purple cone blooms – is native to the island, but if you visit in July you’ll see magnolias, red hot poker trees and hydrangeas. Hydrangeas are also popular in the Azores, particularly around Sete Cidades near Lake Azul.

Festival goers might want to book a trip around Fiesa, an annual summer sand sculpture festival in  Pêra on the mainland. As well as watching artists carving 12m high sculptures and seeing them illuminated at night, visitors can attend workshops. Meanwhile, over in Tomar, women parade through the town carrying bread on their heads during Festa dos Tabuleiros, which is held every four years. The next one takes place in July this year (2023).

Over on Madeira, visitors can attend a 24-hour folk dancing festival in Santana, a jazz festival in Funchal and a canoe regatta and games during Sea Week in Porto Moniz. The Azores meanwhile hosts a week-long party and regatta on Sao Jorge Island and Santa Maria Blues festival on the eponymous island. And while spring is best for whale-spotting in the Azores, sperm and minke whales do ply its waters year-round, so take a whale-watching trip or keep your eyes peeled from land.

2. Gibraltar

Set on the southern tip of Spain, this peninsula hits highs of 28°C in July and benefits from 11 hours of sunshine a day. If you’re after beaches, visit the east side of Gibraltar and you will find the colourful, Italianesque Catalan Bay, and Sandy Bay, best suited for swimmers and water activities.

Visitors can explore the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens all year round, while the endemic Gibraltar sea lavender blossoms on rocks and cliffs around Europa Point and Camp Bay in July. Plus, you're almost guaranteed to spot hundreds of dolphins when joining a boat tour that takes you out into Gibraltar Strait, offering fantastic views of the dominating Gibraltar Rock.

The height of summer is also the best time to experience festivals. Calentita Food Festival takes place in early July, while Gibraltar Regatta is usually held later in the month.

River Vjosa in Albania (Shutterstock)

Most of Europe benefits from sparkling weather in July, but along with August, it's when you'll find the beaches most crowded, and the cities packed with visitors.

Fortunately, it is possible to find a European hot spot that, even in peak season, is slightly less crowded than the others: the Balkan country of Albania.  Temperatures here reach hot heights of 30°C to 35°C.

Spend a few days in Albania's capital  Tirana  for an unusual city break, and discover that the resort town of  Sarandë is a dreamy combination of beaches, history and hiking.

The River Vjosa flows through Albania and has recently received national park status, becoming the first wild river national park in Europe, so there's no better time to explore this protected ecosystem.

And finally, don't miss The Blue Eye natural spring in Muzinë. This UNESCO-listed site has bubbling blue waters that can reach up to 50 metres in depth.

4. Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, France

Provence in July is often visited for its endless rows of lavender fields, but if you look beneath the surface, there’s so much more wilderness to explore across the region.

The steep terrain makes Alpes-de-Haute-Provence perfect for adventurers, with activities such as hiking, rafting and mountaineering all possible to experience. Head to Verdon Natural Regional Park for superb gorges, turquoise glacial river waters, and wildlife spotting, or UNESCO-listed Luberon Region Natural Park for its fields of vineyards, limestone mountains, and medieval villages that perch on rugged hilltops.

Beyond the blissful summer scenery, a July visit to Provence should also be well timed with France's national day, La Fête Nationale, commonly known as Bastille Day. It's an annual celebration in France taking place on 14 July, often marked with festivities, fireworks and the odd parade.

And if you're determined to set your sights on lavender fields before you go, the spa town of Digne-les-Bains is the self-proclaimed lavender capital of France.

Expect glorious weather across the Indian Ocean archipelago to continue throughout July, reaching pleasant highs of around  28°C, usually averaging out around 25°C to 26°C.

And where better to enjoy such warm sunshine than on one of the 115 islands that make up the Seychelles ? Beach relaxation is a given, but you can certainly make an adventure trip out of the islands.

Seek the elusive giant Aldabra tortoise, snorkel and admire the natural beauty of St Pierre Island, or get your feet dirty hiking through the rich green forests of Morne Seychellois National Park.

There's never a better-time weather wise to get in your car and road trip through  Ireland   (unless, maybe, you count March, for St Patrick's Day). In July, you can expect 18 hours of daylight, and a cool temperature. There may be the odd surprise summer shower, but you can't have it all...

Where you drive is up to you, but a stop in colourful Kilkenny can lead you straight to the capital, Dublin, via County Carlow's wild countryside.

If you can, ensure you stop over in Galway, and pay a visit to Connemara National Park, soaking up the nature and hikes, and also the coves and bays along the coast. County Cork is also a must-visit... but we could go on.

Alternatively, the little-visited northwest tip is glorious in the summer. The Inishowen Peninsula in County Donegal has enough to occupy you for days, with white-sand beaches without the crowds, numerous blustery coastal walks, and fantastic local  pubs serving hearty meals.

Many people associate Switzerland with the winter, as skiers and snowboarders flock to destinations such as Zermatt  and St. Mortiz . But they're really missing out on something special. In summer, the Swiss Alps transform into an adult playground for outdoor enthusiasts, without having to step into snow boots. July is an ideal time to visit, as temperatures range from 18 to 28 °C.

Head to the town  Interlaken , known as the 'Adventure Capital of Europe'. Located in the Bernese Oberland, you can enjoy everything from  endless alpine hikes and guided kayak tours on turquoise lakes, to adrenaline-pumping activities such as white-water rafting, canyoning and paragliding. This region offers some wild fun in a beautiful setting.

Don't miss taking the 100-year-old cogwheel train up to  Schynige Platte, where you'll be met with botanical gardens and unbeatable vistas. And before you go, make sure you tuck into a  hot cheese fondue at one of the many restaurants serving traditional Swiss cuisine.

Colourful homes brighten the streets of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (Shutterstock)

Colourful homes brighten the streets of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (Shutterstock)

Sun-seekers can rejoice in Mexico's July temps, reaching highs of a hot  28 °C. It does cool off in the evenings, so you won't be sweltering all day. You may fancy a lightweight jacket, and even a brolly just in case there's a touch of summer rainfall.

Mexico's best-known beaches and hidden coves are often found on the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in Tulum and Cancun. But there are other benefits to the warmth beyond catching a few rays for yourself: July is peak sea turtle season in Mexico.

There's also nature reserves and national parks aplenty, but to cool off from the heat, visit one of the many cenotes. These natural pools were once key water sources for the Mayans, and also believed to be portals to the underworld where Mayan gods would visit. Now, they offer incredible guided swimming, snorkelling   and diving experiences for travellers.

10. whale watching and puffins in iceland.

While you can see sheep, cows and Icelandic horses – a breed of intelligent, petite horses – all year round, in summer you can also spot herds of reindeer around Snaefell and colonies of Atlantic puffins breeding on cliffs around the isle. July is also peak season for whale watching. The best place to take a trip to see humpback, minke and blue whales is from Husavik, in the north of the island.

The days are long, the temperatures at their highest, and so this is the perfect month to really explore Iceland's delights

11. brown bear watching in sweden, finland and arctic norway.

A brown bear strolls through the bog (Shutterstock)

A brown bear strolls through the bog (Shutterstock)

Early to mid July is often the best time to spot a brown bear in Finland, Sweden or Arctic Norway. Typically, brown bears arise from hibernation around April time, and tend to disappear for mating in June, before becoming visible again – often to feed.

Your best bet of a sighting is at night, often from a 'bear hide' hotel, and with the help of a specialist guide – a.k.a. a 'bear safari'. You'll have plenty of tours and locations to choose from.

The Lakeland region of Finland is covered in thick forests, and has approximately 2,000 bears in its midst. In central and northern Sweden, it's even harder to catch a glimpse of the region's reported 3,000 brown bears – though  Hälsingland, Bollnäs and Sandviken are all popular choices.

Honestly, it's much rarer to see a bear in Norway – if you do, it'll be near the Swedish and Finnish border.

12. Birdwatching in Vanuatu

Two rainbow lorikeets, who often appear in Oceanic countries like Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea (Shutterstock)

The 80 islands making up the Pacific Ocean county of Vanuatu may not have the largest number of birds in history, but the ones it does call its own are rather special.

There are thought to be 30 rare species flying around, 11 of which are said to only appear in Vanuatu. The rainbow lorikeet, for example, might be native to Australia, but it frequents Vanuatu  – and is quite the colourful sighting for a keen birder.

There's also the coconut lorikeet, the weird and wonderful V anuatu megapode, and the super cute red-tailed tropicbird, to name a few... a must for fans of sensational birdlife.

13. Roos on Kangaroo Island, Australia

July is midwinter for Australians, though don't expect minus temperatures and piles of snow. There may be a little rain, but temperatures rest around a palatable 14 °C.

Kangaroo Island  is o ff South Australia and, despite the devastating fires of 2020, it's  back to being a must-visit for fans of marsupials. Kangaroos roam the island freely and can be spotted on farmland and along the verges. Wallabies are shyer but keep your eyes peeled at dusk and after dark.

Expect to see koalas, and a variety of beautiful birdlife too, including wedge-tailed eagles (Australia's largest bird of prey) and very rare glossy black cockatoos. Head to  Flinders Chase National Park for seals and bird life. Also worth a visit is Seal Bay Conservation Park, to see protected sea lions doing their thing.

14. The Great Migration, Tanzania and Kenya

The Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra begins in Tanzania, Africa (Shutterstock)

The Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra begins in Tanzania, Africa (Shutterstock)

One of the world's biggest and boldest wildlife migrations is the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra. It starts in northern Tanzania's Serengeti, and over 1.5 million animals move towards the Masai Mara Nature Reserve in Kenya, as they thirst for water and fresh grass.

You can actually experience a part of the migration at almost any time of year, as our Great Migration calendar goes to show. In July, you can expect to see the herds "spread out from  Grumeti Game Reserve and Ikorongo Game Controlled Area to the northern reaches of the Serengeti," according to our expert William Gray.

The crossing over into Kenya really depends on rainfall in Tanzania, so you have to play it by ear. The migration could occur in mid-June, if the waters have run dry –  or as late as September, if the zebra and wildebeest aren't so thirsty. There's often opportunity to spot the crossing in July, so choose your timings wisely.

15. polar bear spotting in spitsbergen, norway.

A polar bear plays in the snow in the Svalbard/Spitsbergen region of Arctic Norway (Shutterstock)

A polar bear sighting in the wild is one of life's great joys, whether you're hardcore into wildlife watching, or find it makes up only part of your travel experience.

In the Svalbard archipelago, April to September is prime wildlife spotting season –  including polar bears as they roam on a ceaseless search for food. This is when official tours take place, and is your best shot of getting an up-close glimpse of these deceptively gorgeous (and quite dangerous!) creatures in their homes. Sadly, you can't really go off polar bear-seeking on your own.

The most popular way of exploring Svalbard is to take an expedition cruise up Spitsbergen's west coast and around the archipelago. These last several days and mix shore excursions with wildlife spotting from deck. Polar bears are often seen on the cliffs and beaches as they look for any marine life that has been washed up. Alternatively, base yourself in Longyearbyen on Spitsbergen and take tours from there. In July, you'll have missed the deep snows of earlier in the season, and the ice won't have quite melted, as it does by the end of the season. So, July's often thought of as one of the best times, weather-wise, to explore.

We've talked plenty about the beauty of Belize  on Wanderlust , and we reckon July's a great time to take in all this Central American gem has to offer.

The weather, firstly, is at its best. Hot days are followed (often) by rainy nights, with a cooling breeze rolling in shortly after. Now's your chance to dive the  Belize Barrier Reef and Glover's Reef, explore ancient Maya cities such as Lamanai, and marvel at the Blue Hole – a natural large sinkhole off the coast that is both mysterious and the largest of its kind.

You could spend weeks soaking up Belize, but make it a multi-country trip (if you've got the time to spare) and tick off the neighbouring Central American countries of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador while you're at it.

17. Alaska, USA

There's a small window for Alaska's peak season: late May to July. There'll be 17 to 18 hours of daylight each day during a July excursion, and it's also the warmest time of year to visit – with highs of approximately 18 °C.

It may not be the cheapest time in-season to visit (that's probably late May), but it is the best for exploring. The prime weather makes exploring the vast Denali National Park and Glacier Bay National Park a total joy. It's a highlight for any nature lover.

Whalewatchers will also benefit from a July trip, as that's when you're most likely to spot humpback whales swimming in the sea. Anglers meanwhile will find it's also the best month for fishing for Alaska king salmon.

18. Namibia

It's true that Namibia , in Southern Africa, is a country that has it all. Famous for its towering red sand dunes, it's also a wildlife hot spot, with a sprawling sandy coast.

We'd say you'll need the best part of two weeks, if not longer, to really take it all in. July's just the time to do it. The weather is pretty sensational, for one thing. There's low chance of rain, and the temp typically hovers around 20 °C – making exploring the Sossusvlei dunes and the desert expanse much cooler than you'd expect.

The lack of rain is perfect for wildlife lovers, too: Etosha National Park's many animals will be gathering around the water holes to quench their thirst, so you've a good chance of spotting zebra, giraffes and elephants side by side.

Where do we begin with Indonesia? T he island-hopping? The many moving and unusual religious festivals that take place? The melting pot of cultures, evident particularly in its cuisine? There's so much to see and do - you could spend months here and never get bored.

It won't be the quietest month in Indonesia, as temperatures reach up to a scorching 30°C and visitors do come to many of the 17,000+ islands that make up Indonesia for a dose of glorious sun. But as its dry season, you've got a good chance of ideal weather on all the islands.

Bali is a classic, as is Java – the most populous island in the country, where you'll find the capital city, Jakarta.

We'd also suggest Sumatra, and Komodo Island for a unique glimpse at the Komodo Dragon in its natural habitat. Finally, Nusa Tenggara (the Lesser Sunda Islands) are all good places to start.

20. French Polynesia

French Polynesia is a long-haul destination worth every minute of the journey, with its largest island Tahiti and neighbouring island Bora Bora being the most sought-after. Nowhere is perfect, but this volcanic archipelago comes pretty close, with its crystal-clear ocean waters, black-sand beaches, waterfalls, and some of the world’s most idyllic accommodation (you’ve undoubtedly seen the island’s overwater bungalows on your Instagram feed). Not to mention its weather, which hovers around 30 °C  year-round, with July being the midst of its dry season.

But beyond its beauty and weather, July is when you can experience Heiva Festival. It’s one of the world’s oldest festivals, showcasing Polynesian heritage through a colourful, two-week-long celebration. Most of the islands participate in the festival in some form, with events including everything from song and dance performances, to sporting competitions (the canoe race is best known).

French Polynesia is perfect for adventurers. Follow walking trails on foot or horseback to breathtaking lookout points, or go diving or snorkelling to see the thriving wildlife in the island’s surrounding waters. As a bonus, July is also the beginning of whale-watching season in French Polynesia.

21. Thailand

July is rainy season in Thailand , but rainy season gets a bad rap. You have to expect downpours of course, but they rarely last all day and have the added bonus of creating incredible waterfalls. Accommodation tends to be cheaper, too.

Visit the north of Thailand in July to experience Phi Ta Khon, or Ghost Festival. The festival's origins are partly based on one of Buddha's past lives when he was a prince who was presumed dead after  a long journey – but his safe return led to  celebrations so huge they were said to wake the dead.  As well as  parades, music shows and pageants, you can watch l ocals dressed in ghostly masks compete in games.

Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival also takes place in the north this month. What began as a Buddhist tradition of donating candles to monks has morphed into spectacle of float-like candles parading to local temples.

The best July destinations for arts and culture

22. philadelphia, usa.

Independence Hall in Philadelphia (Shutterstock)

Independence Hall in Philadelphia (Shutterstock)

A sprawling, metropolitan city in the United States of America  seems an obvious choice for July, right? San Francisco, New York, Seattle, Portland, Houston, or pretty much anywhere will be sure to offer you the full red-white-and-blue experience. There'll be fireworks and parades galore in celebration of Independence Day, taking place annually on the fourth of the month.

We've picked Philadelphia due to  being  slightly more  off the radar compared to other big-hitting US cities, but more so for its history.  Philly is where the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, so we really couldn't think of a better spot to honour the occasion. Expect a week full of concerts, parades and fun activities, with the city's main event being the firework display above the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

23. Kyoto, Japan

Kyoto's Gion Festival is one of Japan's biggest (Shutterstock)

Kyoto's Gion Festival is one of Japan's biggest (Shutterstock)

Kyoto's Gion Matsuri (Gion Festival) is one of Japan's most famous annual celebrations, taking place throughout July. It's been going since the year 869, when the reigning emperor ordered worship at the Yakasa Shrine, in hopes that it would prevent the plague.

It's part of the fabric of the city, with rituals, ceremonies and parades taking place throughout the month. On the 17 and 24 July, traditional parade floats glide through packed streets, and the festivities culminate on the last day of the month, resulting in another street celebration, known as the 'purification' closing ceremony.

It's worth witnessing the magic, especially if you have a keen interest in Japanese tradition and culture. But if you want to experience Gion Matsuri among welcoming locals, you should book what needs booking well in advance.

What makes this year even more special? The event has been cancelled in the past three years due to coronavirus, so 2023 will be an exciting return.

24. Montreal, Canada

A float in Montreal's July comedy festival, Just For Laughs (Shutterstock)

Montreal's Just For Laughs festival does involve people in the streets and arty parade floats, but it's all decidedly a bit less serious.

The comedy festival started in 1983, and has laughed its way to the top: it's now said to be the largest comedy festival in the world. Typically, it takes place over two to three weeks in July, and offers locals and visitors a variety of stand-up shows, comedy nights and evening events  – taking place in many different locations across the city.

Expect showcases for the biggest names in US and Canadian comedy, a few of British comedy's biggest stars, as well as new talent and a bit of off-beat entertainment...

25. Mallorca, Spain

Valldemossa, Majorca (Shutterstock)

Valldemossa, Majorca (Shutterstock)

One of the four main Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Mallorca comes alive in mid July with the Virgin of Carmen Festival (also known as Día de la Virgen del Carmen fiesta) . The festival dates back to the 13th century, when a monk had a   vision of the Virgin Mary with her baby son in her arms. Today, particularly in coastal areas, visitors can watch an effigy of the virgin guide  a procession of floats carried by fishermen down to the sea, where the parade continues on illuminated boats as fireworks are set off to music.

Later in the month, on 28 July, you can also attend a festival dedicated to Saint Catalina Thomas, Mallorca's only   patron saint. A procession of carriages decorated with ribbons and flowers takes place  in the saint's former home town of  Valldemossa.

July is the high season for tourists, but it's possible to get off the beaten track after you've finished enjoying the festivities. Visit the UNESCO-listed Serra de Tramuntana mountains that line the backbone of the island to follow scenic winding roads (beware, you'll need a head for heights) and visit the traditional villages nestled into its valleys, such as  Sóller  and  Deià.

26. Mongolia

The opening ceremony at Nadaam Festival (Lucy Brown/Shutterstock)

Every July, Mongolia celebrates the country's culture and unique sports at Naadam Festival . Its name roughly translates to 'Manly Festival', and focusses on three main nomadic events: archery, horse racing and wrestling. Although women do not take part in the latter, young girls can now compete in the horse racing, and women in the archery.

As one of the biggest festivals in Mongolia's cultural calendar, you'll see participants and locals dressed in traditional clothing. Beyond the sports, there are concerts and parades to keep you entertained, plus plenty of opportunities to sample traditional cuisine, such as  khuushuur  (fried dumplings) and  airag  (fermented mare's milk).

All the main events take place in Ulaanbaatar, but t he festival can be enjoyed across Mongolia . Those who want to have a more remote, intimate experience should head into the countryside: Khovd in the west or Khatgal in the north are known to also known to put on a show.

27. St Lucia

St Lucia Carnival is the highlight of summer in the Caribbean. Celebrations are centred around the Castries, which comes to life with Soca, Calypso, and steel-pan performances by artists from St Lucia and neighbouring islands. If planning your visit, make sure to sign up to your favourite fetes (planned parties) before they sell out.

The event culminates on the final days during the National Parade, where thousands take to the streets as part of marching bands, wearing brightly-coloured costumes embellished with feathers and sequins. Visitors and locals can spectate, but can also join the bands as they take to the streets, if registered early enough.

St Lucia Carnival originated in 1947, when a small crowd first paraded the island . More than 75 years later, around 30,000 revellers join the party every year.

Diving in Zanzibar's teal waters

July marks a great time to go to Zanzibar © Olesya Lesly/Shutterstock

It’s all about the heat come July, with the northern hemisphere’s sizzling summer temperatures adding an extra shine to some of the world’s most popular travel destinations.

Europe is bathed in sunshine, bringing the Mediterranean beach scene to the forefront, while in the tropics dry season signals prime wildlife spotting opportunities. Colder regions also benefit from the heat, with Arctic areas at their most accessible. Finally, there are the summer festivals and celebrations that bring fun and adventure to many destinations around the world.

Whatever your preference, here are our picks of where to go in July.

Where are the best places to travel to in July for relaxation?

iStock-1405795203-RFE.jpg

Zanzibar, Tanzania

Why now? Delve into Stone Town and the Indian Ocean under blue skies.

The spice island Unguja – known to most as Zanzibar – is a scent sensation. Stroll the maze-like alleys of old Stone Town on a warm evening and you’ll catch whiffs of nutmeg, clove and cinnamon in the Darajani Market , frying seafood at stalls in Forodhani Gardens , and the aroma of black coffee in Jaws Corner, where old men gather to watch TV and gossip. Zanzibar’s historic heart, with its crumbling palaces and heartrending slavery-era relics, is just one gem of this treasure-trove island, at its best in July, in the middle of the dry season. Board a dhow to snorkel off the west coast, watching for dolphins; sniff the leaves and buds of a spice plantation; and find your own patch of coral-sand perfection on one of the wonderful beaches.

iStock-1459205297-RFC.jpg

Andros & Bimini, Bahamas

Why now? Alternate activity with indolence on and under the water.

The Bahamas are almost the Caribbean – yet, crucially, not quite. True, this speckle of islands and cays between Cuba and Florida boasts limpid waters and beautiful beaches. But summer here, though “rainy,” is less afflicted by the storms that often hit other islands. July brings calm, clear, warm seas, ideal for enjoying superb diving and snorkeling off tourist-light Andros; its east coast is protected by the world’s third-longest barrier reef. Hop across to Bimini for manta ray encounters (peaking in July, when sharks are less prevalent) and the chance to come face to smiling beak with an Atlantic spotted dolphin. Add mangroves, excellent fishing, thriving birdlife and white-powder beaches, but subtract crowds – Andros is even quieter and better value in July.

Wisconsin, USA

Why now? Cool off with a great lake break.

In Wisconsin ’s warmest month, the shores of Lakes Michigan and Superior lure hordes of heat-fleeing urbanites. Unsurprisingly, the pretty waterfront villages and beaches of Door County , dubbed the “Cape Cod of the Midwest,” bustle with vacationers, though there’s still peace to be found on Washington Island and in Newport State Park . For a real retreat, head northwest to the shore of Lake Superior – stopping en route to dip or fish in one of the glacial lakes peppering Vilas and Oneda Counties. Charming Bayfield, its streets lined with Victorian buildings, is likable enough in itself – but, more importantly, it’s the jumping-off point for the Apostle Islands, a mostly still-wild archipelago of 22 russet fringed emerald specks.

Coral Coast, Western Australia

Why now? Meet charismatic sea creatures, roam red-rock canyons and wander among wildflowers.

Stretching over 1000km (621 miles) between Cervantes and Exmouth , the “Coral Coast” of Western Australia encapsulates much of the country’s appeal in miniature, making this relatively little-touristed stretch ideal for a winter road trip through empty expanses. Here, you’ll discover dramatic rock formations – the Pinnacles, limestone needles punching through the sand near Cervantes – and russet Tumblagooda Sandstone gorges in Kalbarri National Park. You’ll experience surfing and subaquatic adventures along the world’s largest fringing reef – 300km (186 miles) of coral that’s home to some 500 fish species. And you’ll meet miraculous wildlife, like when whale sharks gather in their hundreds on Ningaloo Reef (March to July), along with manta rays – more numerous off Exmouth May to September – and humpbacks arrive to join the fun, too.

Northwest Territories, Canada

Why now? Run the river wild to immerse yourself in Indigenous culture.

This vast region of tundra and taiga is as empty as it is wild, with a population smaller than the tiniest Caribbean nation scattered across a land nearly as large as Mongolia. To discover the natural and cultural wonders of the Northwest Territories , take a river journey into its untamed heart, possible for just a few weeks from late June when temperatures are (relatively) balmy and days stretch forever. Canoe a stretch of Canada ’s longest river, the Deh Cho (Mackenzie); raft the South Nahanni from thundering, 96m(315ft)-high Virginia Falls in the sky-piercing Mackenzie Mountains; or enjoy a gentle kayak on Great Slave Lake , North America ’s deepest. En route, learn about the traditional culture of the Dene peoples who have adapted to this challenging environment over tens of millennia, and watch for caribou, Dall sheep, black bear, moose and wood bison – the continent’s largest land mammal.

Where are the best places to travel to in July for culture?

Gansu, China

Why now? Absorb Silk Road history and Tibetan culture.

While lowland regions of China swelter in summer heat, summer is the time to explore the high Tibetan plateau, when temperatures are pleasant and trails are free of snow. Cupping the northeastern arc of the plateau, Gansu province is popular with domestic tourists, renowned as the gateway of the ancient Silk Road and the home of jaw-dropping grottoes, notably at Mogao near Dunhuang . But away from those hot spots, you’ll find peace, along with rich Tibetan culture and wild landscapes, particularly in Gannan prefecture south of provincial capital Lanzhou . Here, the chants of lamas waft across Xiahe from Labrang Monastery – one of the six great monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism; walk the 3.5km (2-mile) kora (pilgrimage circuit) around reputedly the world’s longest stretch of prayer wheels, before refueling on momo  (Tibetan steamed dumplings).

dite-tURQBwhDE28-unsplash-RFC.jpg

Aarhus and Jutland, Denmark

Why now? Celebrate sunny days and balmy evenings in a cultural and culinary hotspot.

Denmark ’s second city is buzzier than a beehive. Founded by Vikings some 13 centuries ago, today Aarhus is eminently contemporary, with its groundbreaking ARoS art museum , rejuvenated waterfront cultural center, Dokk1 , and innovative Iceberg apartment blocks. Even the Moesgaard Museum , home of the 2000-year-old, bog-preserved Graubelle Man, offers a cutting-edge tour through the past. Come evening, the city reveals its true colors, with cafes, cocktail bars and clubs showcasing that quintessentially Danish blend of smiles and smarts. High summer brings a host of festivals celebrating flowers, jazz, Viking heritage and more, plus warm sun (nudging 20ºC/68ºF) for basking on sandy Baltic beaches: try Den Permanente near the center, silky-soft Bellevue just to the north, and the blissfully empty strands of eco island Samsø, just a short ferry ride away.

Where are the best places to travel to in July for food and drink?

GettyImages-1432799810.jpg

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

Why now? For tasty times on the prairie.

Peak summer typically means peak crowds – but on Canada’s endless prairie, it’s not hard to lose the hordes. Landlocked Saskatchewan is a landscape of space and silence – indeed, an audio-ecologist deemed its Grasslands National Park one of the world’s quietest places. It’s also a great place to eat and drink. The province is the breadbasket of Canada, encompassing 50% of its arable farmland, not to mention a heap of extremely photogenic grain silos. Super-cool Saskatoon , which sits amid all this fertility, has become one of the country’s hottest foodie spots. A raft of distillers, craft brewers, artisan bakers and cocktail shakers have popped up in the small-but-mighty “Paris of the Prairies.” Take a foodie tour and cooking class, and visit nearby farms to meet producers. July also sees the sweet, nutty Saskatoon berries ripen – try them in everything from pies to wine.

GettyImages-1280234020.jpg

Alta Badia, Italy

Why now? Sample superb cuisine amid marvelous mountains.

If the Dolomites are the Alps at their most magnificent, the Alta Badia valley in South Tyrol promises the Dolomites at their tastiest. This jagged array of deep valleys, high plateaus and piercing pinnacles in northern Italy echoes with poignant history: between 1915 and 1918, Italian and Austro-Hungarian forces fought amid these unforgiving peaks, and today you can hike routes such as the Kaiserjäger to discover their trenches and gun emplacements. Alta Badia is renowned for its skiing, but in summer the cable cars and mountain huts reopen to serve hungry hikers, cyclists, paragliders and trail runners instead. The region is spangled with Michelin stars, but even simple refuges dish up good-value but top-notch cuisine (think mountain cheeses, pasta and strudels).

Where are the best places to travel to in July for adventure?

Colombia 216_PNN_COL_Mazars-Lonely_Planet.jpg

Why now? Wake up and smell the coffee in a mini dry season.

Caribbean beaches, mountains, plains, jungle, desert: Colombia encompasses an astonishingly diverse array of landscapes, with correspondingly varied climates. July and August bring a period of drier weather perfect for touring fincas (coffee farms) amid the beautiful, rolling hills of the Zona Cafetera ; admiring dazzling birdlife in Reserva Ecologica Rio Blanco; sleeping beneath the stars among the cacti and otherworldly rock formations of the Tatacoa Desert ; hiking the lush highlands around Popoyán ; and discovering the pre-Columbian tombs, petroglyphs and huge carved heads around San Agustín and Tierradentro. Also visiting this month are giants: between June and November, humpbacks calve off Colombia’s Pacific coast – join a whale-watching tour in Nuquí or from Buenaventura into Bahía Málaga to spot breaching behemoths. It’s also the driest month to spy sloths and pink river dolphins in Colombia’s slice of the Amazon.

GettyRF618007380.jpg

Khardung La, India

Why now? Snowless roads for a magnificent drive.

There are breathtaking road trips – and there are literally breathtaking road trips. The Khardung La is both. This 5600m (18,373ft) pass near Leh , amid the Indian Himalaya, was a key thoroughfare on the Silk Road and is now one of the world’s highest drivable highways. Crossing it by bus is an adventure; crossing it astride a classic Enfield Bullet motorbike even more so. Either way, both mountain views and soaring altitudes will leave you gasping. The roads here are only open for a few months a year, so make the most of the warm, snow-free conditions. Bikers could zigzag up from Manali ( Himachal Pradesh ) to Leh ( Ladakh ) – one of the world’s best mountain rides. Or fly from Delhi to Leh to visit the town’s Tibetan-style palace and stupas before taking the Khardung La into the isolated Nubra Valley .

Places to Travel in July in Western Ghats

There is much more than a monsoon voyage that the Western Ghats can offer to the adventurous monks. Its tiny droplets trickling from dark green leaves, trails enveloped in white mist, air laden with moist earthy scent, and valleys of lush green forest stretching as far as the eyes can fathom.

The Western Ghats , a spectacular mountain range that spans 1,60,000 square kilometres, cut across the Indian states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa , Karnataka , Kerala, and Tamilnadu. It is even one of the top “ecological regions” in the world. This green belt extends parallel to the Western coast of the Indian peninsula.

A visit to the Ghats during the monsoon will reconnect us all with nature and our origins, which are more ancient than the Himalayan ranges. A sight to behold is the magnificent waterfalls coming alive. During this time of year, the rivers will be overflowing with water, and as you go, you’ll find several new streams lining the side of the road.

Travelling in monsoon comes with perks in the Western Ghats. And is synonymous with less crowded pathways, scenic, and getting a 5-star luxury retreat for under 100 USD a night.

July is the best time to visit South Goa. Among the most stunning monsoon trails in India are the Dudhsagar Trek and the train ride. The local visitors call it a favoured monsoon gateway.

The monsoon season in Goa is a time of celebrations thanks to the benefits of having desolate beaches and a festival season. This time of year is when the Sao Joao Festival, the Feast of St. Peter, and the Bonderam Festival of Divar Island all take place. For sure, it is the world’s best place to travel in July on a budget.

Places to Travel in July in Niagara Falls

One of the most popular seasons to visit Niagara Falls in July. The weather is warm, the grass is an intense shade of green, and beautiful wildflowers embellish the already breathtaking landscape.

Despite these benefits, a trip to Niagara Falls in summer is among the most reasonably priced excursions. And you can explore nature’s marvel within a budget.

There are many flights available to handle the surge of travellers, you can also get airfare savings at this time of year. The caveat to the discounts is that advance planning is required, especially if you are on a family vacation. There are many hotels at Niagara Falls, but it’s better to make reservations in advance.

If you visit Niagara Falls in July, you’ll save money and enjoy the greatest weather. Even if it’s hot in the middle of summer, you may enjoy the cool mist from the falls and the air from the height.

Visitors can benefit from the entire Maid of the Mist show, and the discounted admission to the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens. Plus, there is a free hop-on, hop-off Discover Niagara shuttle in July, which runs to 17 of the city’s finest attractions.

Montego Bay

Wondering where to go in July for beautiful beaches? Jamaica is a better place overall. The pace of life is leisurely enough for guests to thoroughly unwind, while blue seas aid visitors to float away worries. It makes sense why so many tourists travel to Montego Bay.

While going to Montego Bay in the winter can be expensive, going there in July will be much more affordable. Huge savings can be found on everything from hotels to airfare at this time because of the tendency for rain.

Visit the Rose Hall Great House while you’re there, go rafting on the Martha Brae River, and relax on Doctor’s Cave Beach.

Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan , is best known for its ski slopes, but in July it comes to life with festivals and flowers. It is also the time to experience some of the most breathtaking wilderness in the nation.

Further east, in Furano, the vivid fields of lavender and poppies are so acclaimed that a separate train station is built to handle the inflow of tourists.

National parks that are impassable in the winter, like Shiretoko and Daisetsuzan, become popular hiking spots once the snow melts off the beaten track.

And travelling to Hokkaido has been simpler thanks to a new bullet train service that began running in March, which connects the island to Tokyo. Cairo’s serpentine streets and little to no rain can make it a little uneasy to walk through them, but you can arrange your agenda to include both inside and outdoor activities.

Although there is no shortage of things to do in New Orleans, a July trip means fewer tourists, allowing you to enjoy some of the city’s most well-known attractions. One such is a walking tour of the Garden District and Frenchman Street .

Additionally, you might benefit from easier access to certain monuments and the New Orleans Swamp Tours, which are cheap and easily accessible this time of the year.

It is counted as the cheapest place to travel in July in the USA.

Place to travel in july in Vietnam, Nha Trang

Since it is the wettest season in Asia in July , just about any place you choose to travel to will have affordable airfare, accommodation, and resort rates. However, if you want to increase your chances of having a dry vacation, Nha Trang is one of your best possibilities.

As a coastal city, Nha Trang offers a wide variety of beaches as well as boat excursions for leisurely boat rides, snorkelling, and diving.

You can also plan trips to the National Oceanographic Museum of Vietnam and other nearby museums alongside outdoor excursions to temples, Vinpearl Amusement Park , and the Hon Khoi Salt Fields .

Places to Travel in July at Provence

Another excellent option is the Senanque Abbey, which is close to Gordes. There are many rows of purple herbs that conceal the Cistercian abbey.

Take a picturesque drive across Provence to enhance the quality of your holiday. Summer is, after all, the ideal season for road trips.

Do we guess you get your answer to where to go in France in July?

Places to Travel in July La Tomatina in July

Spain’s popular festivities, the La Tomatina , and the Fiesta De San Fermín [Running of the Bulls] happen this time of the year.

The custom dates back to the 16th century. Today it draws tens of thousands of nervous and justifiably elated tourists to Pamplona, Spain.

The festival’s contentious primary event is when bulls rush through the 800 metres of city streets, chasing men and women as onlookers cheer them on. The unique event, which is one of Pamplona’s major attractions, is better enjoyed on the streets rather than being a spectator.

On the other hand, what started as a brawl in 1945, is today known to be the most popular and sought-after festival in Spain, the La Tomatina.

People arrive in the city in herds, and head to the centre. The combat starts when the timer strikes eleven and tomatoes start falling from trucks one after the other.

Bunol and Pamplona are definitely the best places to travel to in Spain in July .

Whether you’re a backpacker living on a shoestring budget or a business traveller who just wants to kick back with their laptop and the streaming option, there are plenty of places to travel in July 2022 where your money can go further than usual.

The Best Places to Travel in July

By Caitlin Morton

OneOnly Portonovi Best Places to Travel in July

July is one of the busiest months for travel, with most of the Northern Hemisphere entering full summer vacation mode. As much of the world is welcoming tourism (some for the first time since the start of the pandemic), we’re hoping to make our summer vacations really count this year. That’s why our round-up of July destinations is packed with outdoor adventures that are a tad off the radar: think wetland safaris in South America , multi-day hiking trips through central Iceland , and diving tours off the coast of Bonaire. (Don’t worry, we also included a few spas and beach resorts as well.)

We know you’re probably itching for a spectacular holiday as much as we are, so we’ve gathered up a list of places that cover the geographical gamut. Whether you want to make an easy trip to one of the coolest cities in the U.S. (we reveal that answer below) or take multiple flights to reach your final once-in-a-lifetime destination, here are 11 of the best places to travel in July.

Best Places to Travel in July Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park, Montana

Glacier National Park is one of the best places in travel in July for one big reason: wildflowers . While you might consider spring to be the best time to see colorful flowers, the park’s northern location in Montana means the blooms reach their peak in July and August. Hike along the Garden Wall Trail to see fields of white beargrass, pink fireweed, and yellow glacier lilies as far as the eye can see.

When you’ve had your fill of hiking (and your phone is full of photos), head back to The Resort at Paws Up , a sprawling, 37,000-acre working cattle ranch in western Montana. Their safari-style canvas tents will make you feel like you’re in the Wild West, while locally sourced meals and spa treatments are worthy of a five-star hotel.

Wilderness Safaris Vumbura Plains Botswana

June through August mark the dry, winter season in Botswana , which many consider to be the perfect time to visit. Not only are weather conditions at their best (no rain, and lower risk of malaria), but these months offer prime wildlife viewing opportunities as animals tend to stick around watering holes. The country also happens to be one of our favorite safari spots in Africa. While you’re sure to spot wildlife in Kenya’s Maasai Mara or in South Africa’s Kruger, you’ll also be in the company of a couple dozen other jeeps filled with tourists; in Botswana, it feels like it’s only you and nature.

This year is a particularly exciting time to visit, thanks to the April 2022 reopening of Wilderness Safaris Vumbura Plains , a camp situated in the heart of the Botswana’s wildlife-rich Okavango Delta. Renovated features include brand-new furniture, bigger windows in the suites, locally made artwork, and menus showcasing seasonal ingredients from nearby farms. And, of course, the camp provides plenty of opportunities for adventure: canoe safaris, day and night wilderness drives, hot air balloon rides (from April to September), and scenic helicopter rides.

Chicago

If you’ve spent any time in Chicago , you probably aren’t surprised that our readers consistently vote it the best city in the United States . And if you haven’t spend time here? We suggest booking trip to the Windy City stat. There are tons of summer activities for both first-time and seasoned visitors, including visiting the beaches along Lake Michigan, taking Chicago River boat tours, watching the fireworks at Navy Pier, and attending festivals like the Southport Art Fest (July 9 to 10) and Lollapalooza (July 28 to 31).

There’s no shortage of great hotels in the city , but do yourself a favor and book a few nights at The Ritz-Carlton, Chicago . The hotel recently completed the final phase of a $100 million renovation, which means guests can experience redesigned rooms and suites with extra-large windows overlooking the skyline and Lake Michigan. There are also long-standing hotel amenities like a rooftop lounge (only open in the summer), spa with indoor lap pool, and an excellent Italian restaurant, Torali.

OneOnly Portonovi Montenegro

It’s not easy to find an uncrowded beach in Europe during the summer months, but the country of Montenegro is one of your best bets. It takes up less space than Connecticut and has a lower population than Stockholm , but the tiny Balkan nation should not be overlooked—especially since it’s quieter and more untouched than neighbors Croatia and Greece. Beyond the beaches, you can take advantage of the country’s historic Old Towns, UNESCO-protected parks, and lakes begging for a swim.

The country also happens to be home to one of our latest Hot List winners , One&Only Portonovi . Situated on the Adriatic Riviera, this knockout hotel features huge rooms and suites (one even comes with its own 268-bottle wine cellar), Italian restaurants led by Michelin-starred chefs, and a very serious spa where guests can embark on three- to six-day wellness programs overseen by on-site doctors.

The Pantanal

The Pantanal

Stretching across parts of southeastern Brazil , Paraguay, and Bolivia , the Pantanal is the world’s largest floodplain and boasts the highest concentration of wildlife on the entire South American continent (yes, even more than the Amazon). Here you can spot ultra-rare jaguars, crocodiles, monkeys, anacondas, and some 650 species of birds, with the best visibility during the dry season from July to October.

Note that reaching the Pantanal takes a bit of work: You must first fly to São Paulo (a great excuse to stay overnight at the new São Paulo Rosewood ), then fly to the Campo Grande Airport in Mato Grosso, then either drive or take a chartered flight to your lodge. And that lodge should definitely be the upscale Caiman Ecological Reserve , a 204-square-mile refuge known for its luxury villas and local conservation efforts. Between visiting jaguar sanctuaries and horseback riding through the jungle, rest up at the reserve’s hammock garden, take a dip in the pool, or enjoy the starry sky from your private balcony.

Helen Restaurant Birmingham Alabama

Birmingham, Alabama

This summer, Birmingham will serve as the first American host for The World Games (July 7 to 17), an 11-day sporting event featuring 3,600 athletes from more than 100 countries around the world. Hundreds of thousands of spectators are expected to attend the event, watching athletes compete for gold in flag football, wheelchair rugby, kickboxing, tug of war, and dozens of other sports. Tickets are available online , and can be purchased for specific sports or dates.

While you’re in town, be sure to also sample some of Birmingham’s most exciting dining venues. Helen is a contemporary Southern grill helmed by five-time James Beard finalist Rob McDaniel, who cooks up wood-fired meats and starts every meal with warm angel biscuits topped with whipped can syrup butter. A block away, The Essential serves up vegetable-heavy dishes using ingredients from local farmers, homemade pastas, and some of the tastiest desserts in the city.

Bonaire

Only 50 miles from Venezuela, Bonaire is the farthest east of the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao). Since it sits outside the Hurricane Belt—and since its relatively remote location means its never as crowded as other Caribbean islands—there’s not really a bad time to visit; but July is one of the best months to spot animals both above and below sea level. The Pekelmeer Flamingo Sanctuary on the southern end of the island is home to more than 10,000 flamingos (July marks the tail end of breeding season), which you can spot from the road or nearby Pink Beach.

But the most beautiful parts of Bonaire can be found just below the surrounding waters. The entire coral reef around the island is a national park (Bonaire National Marine Park), with brightly colored coral and wildlife ranging from nurse sharks and seahorses to friendly green turtles. There are 85 dive sites within the park and dozens of tour operators on the island, so there’s really no excuse to stay exclusively on dry land.

Oaxaca Mexico

Oaxaca, Mexico

Far from the coastal spring break hotspots of Cancún and Cabo San Lucas, Oaxaca , in south-central Mexico, is one of the most important cultural hubs in the Americas. Explore the region’s craft revolution led by female entrepreneurs, secure a table at Alejandro Ruiz’s Casa Oaxaca for traditional dishes and cocktails, then head to the streets for delicious tlayudas and tacos served from food trucks (our favorites for each: Tlayudas La Chinita, and Lechoncito de Oro, respectively).

An extra special reason to visit in July is the vibrant Guelaguetza Festival, which takes place on the last two Mondays of the month. The festival celebrates the 16 different ethnolinguistic groups of Oaxaca with folk dancing, traditional clothing, mezcal fairs, and concerts.

Philadelphia

Philadelphia

If you’re hoping to travel over the Fourth of July, look no further than Philadelphia . (You might as well celebrate America’s birthday in America’s birthplace, right?) The city goes all out for the holiday with its annual Wawa Welcome America festival, which actually begins on June 19 this year to incorporate Juneteenth into its recognition of American independence. The 16-day celebration features dozens of free events across the city, culminating on July 4 with a massive concert (headliners this year are Jason Derulo and Ava Max) on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, followed by fireworks over the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Even if you aren't in town for the Fourth, head to the Philadelphia Museum of Art anyway (which unveiled Frank Gehry-designed galleries in 2021 after a four-year renovation) and check out the Waiting for Tear Gas exhibit. On display until July 17, the installation shows how artists have captured and responded to moments of public protest around the world, with works spanning from 1913 to 2017. Also be sure to book a room at The Filter Club —its views of the fireworks over the Philadelphia Museum of Art are the best in town.

Iceland

There really is no wrong time to visit Iceland, but we’re particularly fond of chasing the midnight sun during July—the more daylight hours for exploring, the better. The summer months also make certain parts of the country accessible that might not be in the winter, including the 34-mile Laugavegurinn hiking trail in the Central Highlands. The mountain huts and campsites along the trail are only open between late June and early September, giving you a small time window to experience the hot springs, black lava fields, and multicolored mountains along the path.

If the term “mountain hut” makes you cringe a little, fear not: Iceland has some luxury stays that might be more up your alley. The Reykjavik Edition (a Hot List 2022 winner) opened in the nation’s capital last year, featuring custom furniture, local treats in the minibars, and incredible city and harbor views. Meanwhile, Hotel Rangá continues to offer comfortable accommodations and a menu of outdoor excursions for guests, ranging from horseback rides on black-sand beaches to guided tours through volcanic lava tubes.

The Vanderbilt Newport Rhode Island

Newport, Rhode Island

Newport comes alive in July, with a trio of big-name festivals keeping locals and tourists busy all month long: The Newport Regatta (July 9 to 10), Newport Folk Festival (July 22 to 24), and the Newport Jazz Festival (July 29 to 31). The city is no stranger to luxe hotels, but we’re particularly excited about the top-to-bottom transformation of The Vanderbilt, Auberge Resorts Collection , which was unveiled last summer. The 33-room resort, housed in a former mansion, is now even more glamorous with a revived lobby area and restaurants.

Or book a stay at Brenton Hotel , which has a “ Pick Your Pastime ” summer package series that allows guests to experience Newport-esque activities like private cruises, polo matches, golfing, and mansion tours.

A month-by-month guide to the cheapest flights to international destinations

Jordan Waller

Airfare prices change regularly throughout the year, but if you know where to look, it's possible to find a bargain to even the most popular destinations — especially if you're able to be flexible with your travel dates.

TPG reached out to Skyscanner to trawl through their vast amount of airfare data and give you a comprehensive look at the destinations around the world that typically cost less to fly to. Whether you're looking to depart from the United States or from the United Kingdom, plenty of sweet spots can be found.

Below are destinations that are consistently priced low throughout the year and destinations that regularly pop up with cheaper airfares during specific months.

*All pricing taken from economy class, round-trip bookings made on Skyscanner for travel in 2022.

Which destinations are the cheapest to fly to year-round?

While certain destinations can be cheaper on average throughout the whole year, others fluctuate, and not always in the ways you might think.

For example, if you're based in the U.S. and dream of flying to Europe for your next vacation, the best prices for most European locations were in April, May and June, according to Skyscanner's data on the average cost of a return economy flight. This is true, according to that data, even though this time is normally considered a peak travel time for the region and coincides with the U.K. school holidays.

However, while you may be able to pick up cheaper airfare during this time, prices for hotels and attractions may be higher during these periods.

Meanwhile, the average return flights to London were at their lowest at the beginning of the year, between January and March. Note this can be a notoriously drizzly and cold time to visit the U.K. capital (though, let's face it, England isn't really known for its great weather at the best of times).

The next cheapest period to visit London from the U.S. was perhaps surprisingly between October and December. Again, this is during the colder months, but still great news for those looking for a potential Christmas escape to take advantage of some of the Thanksgiving and fall breaks in the U.S.

For travelers based in the U.K., we found airfares to destinations in Italy to be consistently among the top 10 cheapest throughout the year. Despite its popularity among British travelers, Greece didn't break the top 10 once for the cheapest average airfares.

Cheapest places to fly from January through March

Traveling from the us.

January through March saw the lowest average prices of the year for flights departing the U.S. to London and Paris, with the French capital coming in a smidgen cheaper to get to. If you take advantage of the convenient Eurostar links between these two European cities, you could easily hit both of these destinations during this period for less than you'd pay any other time.

Related: The best hotels in London

If you decide to do both, we suggest returning to the U.S. from Paris to avoid the U.K.'s notoriously high fees and taxes on airfares.

cheap destinations to travel in july

Average airfare prices to Puerto Rico from the U.S. were among the cheapest during these months in 2022. January is also an ideal time to visit Puerto Rico, thanks to the dryer winter months with moderate temperatures and far less rainfall than you'll see during other times in the year.

Closer to home, this period is also a great time to visit Mexico , where you can enjoy much dryer and cooler temperatures.

Traveling from the UK

If you don't mind wrapping up to stay warm, you can bag plenty of great deals to Europe departing the U.K., but be warned that some places can be chilly during the winter months.

For example, Eindhoven, the Netherlands, can see temperatures dropping as low as 34 Fahrenheit (1.3 Celsius) in January and only just peaking over 50 Fahrenheit (10 Celsius) in March.

Riga, Latvia, sees even lower temperatures, regularly plummetting to around 24 Fahrenheit (-5 Celsius) between January and February and peaking at around 33 Fahrenheit (1 Celsius) in March.

If you're looking for sun, Palma, Mallorca, is your best bet. The first months of the year generally still see days filled with sunshine. It won't necessarily be hot enough to top up your tan and enjoy a beach break, though — temperatures mainly float around the 61 Fahrenheit (16 Celsius) mark.

Cheapest places to fly from April through June

If you're considering a European vacation , these months pulled up cheaper airfares than any other, according to Skyscanner data, with good average prices for Spain, France, Portugal and the U.K. While each of these locations will begin seeing sunnier weather throughout June, you can still expect blues skies and bouts of sunshine during April too.

It is, however, worth doing some research before you book — U.K. schools break for Easter in the first half of April and again at the beginning of June for the summer half-term break. During these times, you can expect many European locations to be busy with family vacations and often see soaring accommodation prices. If you can, we'd recommend booking outside of these weeks to save on both money and time spent queuing due to increased numbers of other tourists.

Looking for something more far-flung? Tokyo has great average airfare prices during the spring, and if you time it properly, you could also witness Japan's beautiful cherry blossom season, which typically peaks in early April.

This is one of the prime times to visit Italy and take in the sights before its summer hits full throttle in July, bringing with it almost prohibitively high temperatures. Visits between April and June are perfect for soaking up the sun, alfresco dining and diving into this country's rich history.

Sicily, in particular, is excellent at this time of the year. However, note that it might get a little too hot for some as June approaches, especially if this year's wildfires and extreme weather are anything to go by.

If Dubrovnik, Croatia, has been on your list for some time but now feels a little too in vogue and expensive, you could also get good prices on flights to Zadar . This charming seaside city is situated on the Dalmatian Coast and is known for its fantastic restaurant and dining scene, with an array of stunning nearby national parks.

Cheapest places to fly from July through September

For those yearning to visit Canada outside of its harsh winter periods, July through September can be an ideal time to enjoy a summer vacation. Toronto bursts to life during the Toronto Jazz Festival and Toronto Fringe Festival in July — perfect for culture vultures.

You can get good prices on flights to Mexico between July and September. While these months bring slightly cooler and more comfortable temperatures, they also mark Mexico's rainy season, typically from late August to September.

Conversely, if you've always had Peru on your bucket list, this can be a great time to visit.

It's the country's driest season — fantastic conditions if you plan to hike to Machu Picchu. According to Skyscanner's data, you can typically find good prices on flights to Peru during these months. However, note that if you plan to travel to Machu Picchu from Lima, you must either get a connecting flight to Cusco or take a long bus ride.

September can be one of the best periods to visit Ireland during its shoulder season. Along with good deals on airfare, you'll also typically see cheaper accommodation costs and fewer crowds. The weather can also be fairly mild during these months with good dry spells, though it likely won't be shorts and T-shirt weather.

Mid-August through to September also sees much milder weather in Italy and can be a preferable month to visit than July and August, which are the hottest months of the year and the most crowded with tourists.

Elsewhere in Europe, July onward is a great time to take advantage of good weather in France.

According to Skyscanner data, Rodez, France, is one of the cheapest places on average to fly to from the U.K. during these months. It also sees high temperatures and lots of sunshine. The mercury is typically around 77 Fahrenheit (25 Celsius) in July and August before dropping off to a more manageable 69.8 Fahrenheit (21 Celsius) average in September.

Cheapest places to fly from October through December

There are great prices on airfares to Mexico from October through December, and these months are also a particularly intriguing time to visit.

Mexico's Day of the Dead celebrations typically take place Nov. 1-2. The festival is an opportunity to honor deceased family members, and there is a wide array of celebrations throughout Mexico, making this a memorable and enlightening time to visit and learn about Mexican traditions.

If you keep your eyes peeled, it's also possible to get low-priced airfares to Iceland, allowing for a festive visit to Reykavik to take in the snow alongside a healthy jolt of Christmas spirit.

Visit London to see the city decorated for the festivities as it gears up for the holidays and New Year celebrations. Sure, it'll be cold and the weather occasionally unwieldy, but it's a magical time to visit the U.K. capital.

Related: These are the best Christmas markets in Europe

For U.K. travelers looking for an affordable winter getaway, cast your eyes toward Italy, where the weather, though much milder than in the earlier months of the year, is still quite the contrast to the climate at home if you pick the right destination.

For example, Sicily will feel much closer to the U.K. spring weather. Other areas, such as Milan or Venice, won't be quite as warm but still make for great locations for romantic winter getaways on the continent.

Bottom line

While airfare prices fluctuate, they don't always follow the expected patterns you might guess. Based on Skyscanner's data from last year, you might be surprised by how much cheaper certain destinations in some months compared to others — especially airfares to Europe from the United States during summer when one might expect higher costs.

Similarly, from the U.K., Italy is generally fairly cheap to fly to if you look in the right places. By looking further afield to places like Rodez, France, or Zadar in Croatia, you might even visit somewhere that's commonly overlooked by other tourists wishing to visit better-known cities such as Paris or Dubrovnik.

Best Places in the US to Travel in July on a Budget

July is a huge month for travel lovers. Summer weather has arrived, school is out, and more people are taking time off from work. All of these things make July a great month to take a summer vacation. Unfortunately, these things can also mean big crowds and high prices at popular travel destinations.

But a memorable summer vacation doesn’t have to wreak havoc on your travel budget. Exploring new destinations, finding cheap flights , and researching budget travel guides are all easy ways to save money on your summer travels.

To help you keep costs down on your next trip, here are our picks for the best places to travel in July without breaking the bank.

Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park is one of America’s most beautiful destinations, making it an incredibly popular summer vacation option. Every year, millions of people flock to the incredible national park to experience the erupting geysers, majestic wildlife, towering mountains, and incredible hiking trails within its 2.2 million acres.

Despite the park’s massive popularity in July, a trip to Yellowstone can provide an incredible bang for your buck if you plan your trip right.

Entrance fees to enter Yellowstone National Park are $35 per private vehicle, $30 per motorcycle or snowmobile, and $15 per person if entering by bicycle, foot, skis, etc. In a car of 4 people, that’s less than $9 per person for 7 days of park access. The park also offers free admission days throughout the year.

Though hiking is free and park admission to Yellowstone is affordable, it’s the hotels and food costs that are really going to cut into your travel budget . Yellowstone does contain several lodges within the park, including the iconic Old Faithful Inn . However, these lodges are definitely not cheap and often fill up 6-8 months in advance.

If you’re visiting Yellowstone on a budget, camping is a great way to save money. The park offers 12 campgrounds with over 2,000 campsites , and fees start as low as $15 per night. Five of Yellowstone’s campgrounds can be reserved ahead of time, and the rest are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis. While July offers the best weather at Yellowstone National Park, be sure to bundle up if you’ll be camping, as summer nights can still be quite cold.

To save money on food, consider bringing some snacks along and cooking at the campsite. Just don’t forget to bear-proof your foods if you’re camping in the backcountry.

Salt Lake City, Utah

Salt Lake City is widely known as a haven for winter sports enthusiasts, but this up and coming city is also a top tier summer vacation destination. Salt Lake City offers visitors a true mountain town feel with all of the attractions and amenities you’d expect from larger cities like Denver . Best of all, July brings some of the best weather for exploring the great outdoors in Salt Lake City.

In our guide to visiting Salt Lake City on a budget , we highlight a ton of free and cheap things to do in the city, from awe-inspiring hikes to military museums and historic churches. Salt Lake City is the headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The LDS Church offers free tours of the beautiful Temple Square where travelers can visit the historic Salt Lake Temple and the world-famous Salt Lake Tabernacle.

To save money while exploring Salt Lake City, take advantage of UTA’s Free Fare Zone in downtown SLC, or take advantage of the July weather by renting a Green Bike for as little as $7.

Finger Lakes, New York

For a budget friendly and memorable summer vacation that takes you away from the big city, it doesn’t get much better than the Finger Lakes. Comprised of 11 narrow lakes and miles upon miles of breathtaking state parks, gorges, waterfalls, and over 120 vineyards, the Finger Lakes region is truly an outdoor lover’s paradise.

July is arguably the best time to visit this picturesque region in central New York. The area’s 11 lakes provide no shortage of water activities, including boating, fishing, swimming, water skiing, kayaking, and so much more. If you’ve got an adrenaline junkie in your group, visit Roseland Wake Park , the first and only cable wake park in the northeastern United States.

Once you’re done exploring the waterfalls of Watkins Glen State Park , carve out some time to eat and drink your way through the Finger Lakes Wine Trails , the Finger Lakes Beer Trail , or the Finger Lakes Cheese Trail . If you’re looking for a few air conditioned places to explore, the Corning Museum of Glass and the Strong Museum of Play are not to be missed.

Bar Harbor, Maine

July is a great time to visit Bar Harbor. Located on beautiful Frenchman’s bay, this quaint New England town is best known as a gateway to Acadia National Park, one of America’s most visited national parks. The park is home to stunning landscapes that include mountains, ponds, and beaches. For a once in a lifetime experience, wake up early, wear an extra layer of clothes, and hike or drive to the top of Cadillac Mountain for one of the most beautiful sunrises in America.

Entrance fees to enter Acadia National Park are $30 per private vehicle, $25 per motorcycle, and $15 per person if entering by bicycle or on foot. In a car of 4 people, that’s just $7.50 per person for 7 days of park access.

Once you’re settled back in town, start your day with some blueberry pancakes from Cafe This Way , or try a bizarre twist on a local delicacy with lobster ice cream from Ben and Bill’s . If you’re up for some free entertainment, grab a blanket and head to Agamont Park for a free movie and popcorn.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Often overlooked by travelers that visit New York City or Washington, DC , Philadelphia is a budget friendly destination that punches above its weight class – and that’s not just a joke about the famous ‘Rocky Steps.’

And as the birthplace of America, July is a great time to visit and celebrate Independence Day in the City of Brotherly Love. Every July, Philadelphia is filled with free events to celebrate the 4th of July, as Wawa Welcome America turns the city into a weeklong festival of free concerts, fireworks shows, free museum days, free outdoor movie screenings, block parties, and more.

Beyond Independence Day, history lovers on a budget are in especially good hands in Philadelphia. The Liberty Bell , Independence Hall , and the US Mint can all be visited for free.

After a long day of historical sightseeing, grab a craft beer, kick back in a hammock, and enjoy the summer breeze coming off the Delaware River at Spruce Street Harbor Park .

San Diego, California

There really isn’t a bad time to visit San Diego, but impeccable July weather makes it a perfect time to visit what many call America’s Finest City. Whether you’re looking for unspoiled coastline, serene beaches, historical landmarks, or free activities galore, San Diego has got you covered.

You can spend hours getting lost in Balboa Park , a 1,200-acre urban park that serves as the city’s cultural epicenter. It’s home to expansive green spaces, beautiful gardens, and multiple museums, many of which are free. Highlights include the nationally famous San Diego Zoo and Japanese Friendship Garden.

When you’re ready to get outside and take full advantage of the amazing San Diego weather, go hiking at Torrey Pines State Reserve , a stretch of preserved coastline that shows you what San Diego really looked like before it was developed. If you’d rather kick back and go full vacation mode, sunbathe at some of the nation’s best beaches including Coronado Beach and Mission Beach.

11 Dream International Vacations That Are Surprisingly Affordable

From Portugal to Panama, here’s where you can get the most bang for your buck.

cheap destinations to travel in july

As the world becomes more connected by air travel, international vacations are increasingly affordable — but you have to know where to look and when to book. Typically, if you're hoping to save money, you should plan your trip around a destination's off-season. As a bonus, you're bound to have a better travel experience when you don't have to jostle your way through crowds to get to the top attractions.

Whether you're dreaming of a vacation as far from the U.S. as Australia or as close as Toronto, the actual cost could surprise you (in a good way). Using data from the booking platform Kayak , we've compiled a list of 11 international destinations where your dollar will go the furthest, plus when to book for the cheapest airfare and accommodation.

Toronto, Canada

Just north of the U.S. border is a growing city bursting with culture, a diverse culinary scene, and activities catering to a range of age groups and interests. Often mistaken for the Canadian capital, Toronto is sometimes known as "Hollywood North" for its wealth of celebrity residents. Foodies will want to make stops in Little Italy, one of several Chinatowns, and Little Portugal for a gastronomic jaunt around the world. Tourists may also be inclined to catch a hockey game, sample craft beer, and take a trip to the famous CN Tower to get unmatched views of the city.

Kayak data indicates that Toronto's low season runs from October to March, with the exception of December because of holiday travel. The cheapest flights can be found for about $180 from New York's JFK Airport in October. A direct flight from JFK to Toronto takes less than two hours.

Hotels downtown seem to be cheapest in January and February, when you can expect to pay as little as $33 per night for three-star accommodation. They're most expensive in September, going for an average of $371 per night.

Grand Est, France

The area formerly known as Alsace (now officially part of the larger Grand Est region) is beloved by French travelers. It doesn't attract nearly as many visitors as Paris or the Cote d'Azur, so you'll get a quieter experience. Kaysersberg, once featured on the TV program Le Village Préféré des Français as the French's favorite village, exemplifies many of the characteristics that have endeared Alsace to locals. It's got architecture that dates back to the 13th century, world-renowned wine cellars, and hearty Alsatian cuisine.

Fly to Strasbourg, the capital of Grand Est, in February or March for the best price. From New York City, round-trip flights can be found for less than $700, and you can stay in a three-star hotel for as low as $89 per night in the off-season. Kayak says the cheapest months for accommodation in Grand Est are August (an anomaly) and October.

Armenia attracts tourists with its rich arts scene, upscale shopping, and history museums packed with treasures. Though the capital, Yerevan, is a popular destination, no trip to this Asian country is complete without stepping into the gorgeous and rugged countryside. Head out to Khor Virap, a monastery first established during the 600s, for mountainside views and ancient architecture about 45 minutes away from Yerevan. It's worth the additional hour it takes to drive out to Garni Gorge, topped by a Roman temple, along the way.

Winter is Armenia's low season. The cheapest month to fly from NYC to Yerevan is November ($838 for a round trip, on average), though flights from January through March aren't much more expensive. Three-star hotels average $90 per night in January, the cheapest month for accommodation.

Brisbane, Australia

The capital of Queensland on Australia's east coast is arguably the country's design capital. Drop by the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (colloquially called QAGOMA , one entity) or the Institute of Modern Art ( IMA ) to get a sense of Asian-Pacific art. Go shopping in the Fortitude Valley district, where you'll be able to pick up pieces from local and international designers. And, of course, because it's Australia, it's easy to get in touch with the local wildlife. Visit the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary , just about 20 minutes from the city, to hang out with more than 100 critters (not just koalas, either).

In general, Australia doesn't exactly fit the bill of "budget travel" for Americans, considering the absolute cheapest round-trip flight from NYC to Brisbane on Kayak costs almost $1,000. However, relative to other Australian destinations, this waterfront city is one of the more affordable entry points. The cheapest month to book a flight to Brisbane is September, the first month of spring in the Southern Hemisphere. Three-star hotel stays average in the $150 range from April through July, then spike in August.

Madeira, Portugal

It's been 600 years since the Portuguese colonized Madeira, and the archipelago continues to astound visitors with its natural beauty. Trek along miles of rugged coast to see the Atlantic at its most paradisiacal. The capital of Funchal is home to a number of hotels offering glamour, glitz, and stiff cocktails. Speaking of drinks — be sure to check out the famous fortified wine named after the island where it was made.

Typically, a round-trip flight from NYC to Funchal will set you back anywhere from $650 to $1,100, with the lowest prices offered November and January to May. Hotel prices fluctuate on a similar schedule and range from about $150 to $330 per night for a three-star property.

If you're looking for a cheaper Mediterranean vacation , hop to the sea's southern side and try out Tunisia. The country has history (with a Roman colosseum — the Amphitheatre of El Jem — some say is even better than Rome's), miles of beautiful, sandy beaches, and bazaars with carpets, ceramics, and metalwork.

Kayak data indicates that the cheapest time to fly from NYC to Tunis , Tunisia's capital, is November (about $560), then September to October and January to May ($608 to $768). Prices for a night in a three-star Tunis hotel range from around $100 to $200, with the cheapest months on Kayak being September and December through March.

Etyek, Hungary

Budapest gets the majority of Hungary's visitors, but if you want to delve deeper into the country's culture, drive 18 miles west of the capital to Etyek, often called the "vineyards of Budapest." This area has been producing grapes since the 18th century and has been likened to Champagne for its excellence of crisp wines like chardonnay and sauvignon blanc. The town is also a pilgrimage for film buffs, with huge movies like "Blade Runner 2049" and "The Martian" having been shot there.

Etyek is about a 30-minute drive from Budapest. September through November and January through April are the cheapest times to fly to the Hungarian capital from NYC, according to Kayak data . Outside of the busy summer season, round-trip flights can be found for $524 to $620.

While September is a cheap time to fly to Hungary, it happens to be the most expensive month for accommodation. Book your trip in January, February, or March to snag a three-star hotel for $160 a night or less.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines

That St. Vincent and the Grenadines were the last of the British colonies in the Caribbean to gain their independence (only in 1979) could be a reason why the islands have lagged behind other big players in drawing tourists. The upside of that, however, is the lack of crowds at beaches and on trails leading through lush rainforest to dormant volcanoes.

Visitors will fly into St. Vincent's Argyle International Airport, open only since 2017, and ferry over to the smaller islands of the Grenadines. The route is run several times a day from Kingstown.

Round-trip flights from NYC can be found for under $600 in March, May, and November. Hotels on St. Vincent remain surprisingly cheap throughout the year, showing the same sporadicity as flight prices. Go in January, May, June, August, or December for average nightly prices under $200 for three-star properties. The cheapest month for accommodation is December, when you can find a good hotel for about $50 a night.

Panama City, Panama

Meander through Panama City's old quarter where Spanish-style houses line cobblestone streets. Eat your way through Panamanian cuisine — yuca, plantains, empanadas, sancocho de gallina (chicken stew), and fish soup are among the most-loved dishes — and then top it all off with a tour of the city's thriving cocktail scene. The rainforest is easily accessible from Panama City if you're eager to swap the urban jungle for real jungle scenery.

Even though Panama is located in the Northern Hemisphere, its seasons — of which there are only two — are opposite of the U.S.'s. "Winter" (aka the wet season) lasts from around May to December and "summer" (the dry season) lasts from December to May. It's cheaper to go during the wet season, when the climate is least comfortable.

Prices for a round-trip flight from NYC to Panama City's Tocumen International Airport range from $339 to $659, with the cheapest times being April to June and September to October. The most expensive flights are in December. You can often stay in a three-star property for under $130 per night if you go between June and September.

Nicholas Schmidt/Travel + Leisure

Guatemala is consistently ranked a Travel + Leisure reader favorite for its combination of natural beauty and historic wonders. Visitors can wander through ancient Mayan ruins, hike the mountains and jungles, or explore the historic streets of the UNESCO World Heritage site, Antigua. Guatemala also boasts a thriving arts scene, perfectly preserved Spanish architecture, and unique cuisine like chuchitos (Guatemala-style tamales).

Book a trip for May or September for the cheapest flights ($269 to $344) on Kayak . Three-star hotels during that time should cost in the $120- to $140-per night range, while stays during August — the cheapest month for accommodation — cost, on average, $108 nightly.

Hanoi, Vietnam

You get a little bit of everything from a trip to Hanoi: vibrant culture, thousand-year-old history, a food scene that spans world-famous street carts to Michelin-starred restaurants, and a touch of jungle evidently seeping from the outskirts into the city. With $1 USD converting to about 25,000 Vietnamese dong, roughly the cost of a delicious banh mi , you should find it easy to stick to your budget and still live indulgently in this bustling capital.

Round-trip flights from NYC to Hanoi cost about $870 at their cheapest, from September through November, which is Vietnam's transitional period from the hot and humid wet season to the dry (and touristy) season. During this time, three-star properties go for about $125 to $150 a night.

Best places to travel in July

Amsterdam, Netherlands

1.  Amsterdam, Netherlands

July in Amsterdam is all about good food, good weather and good vibes. Lazy summer days are best spent hanging out in Vondelpark, where you can often catch free open-air comedy, dance and musical performances, or at Roest urban beach, which comes complete with an adult-friendly jungle gym. And although the city’s usual festivities are likely to be muted this year, keep an eye out for street food markets and events marking the city’s normally effervescent Pride season.

Greenland

2.  Greenland

Touted by some as ‘the new  Iceland ’, Greenland may be more popular than ever before, but it’s still a long way behind its oversaturated sibling – all the better for those wanting to get off the beaten track. July is technically high season here, and hotels do book up fast, but this is the world’s largest (and arguably wildest) island, and there are plenty of opportunities to find relative solitude. In it for the icebergs? Join a nighttime cruise of Unesco-listed Ilulissat Icefjord (the size of 66,000 football fields), where until around the 24th of the month, the midnight sun sets a cast of creaking bergs aglow in hues of pink, purple and orange.

Cape Town, South Africa

3.  Cape Town, South Africa

Hoping to see some whales while in Cape Town? July is the beginning of whale season in this part of the world, so best to get ahead of the game and set up camp accordingly, with southern right and humpback whales most likely to show their faces at this early juncture. Elsewhere in the city, winter is at its peak, meaning mild temperatures and a charming atmosphere free of the summer sizzle. You’ll have the sights to yourself in July here.  Obviously, check out the new Time Out Market Cape Town  when you're there.

Udaipur, India

4.  Udaipur, India

A popular destination for tourists, this tropical subcontinent has something to offer all year round, but in July temperatures cool down a little following May and June (but it’s still hot, don’t worry). Known as the ‘City of lakes’, Udaipur is a beautiful city in the heart of the state of Rajasthan, with historic palaces, temples, a wildlife sanctuary and a ton of markets for shopping. Be sure to spend your evenings in a rooftop cafe for fantastic food with a view. End the day sitting next to the water and soak up the tranquility.

South Island, New Zealand

5.  South Island, New Zealand

With sweet ski slopes, luxury hot springs and fantastic whale watching opportunities, New Zealand’s South Island is a no-brainer when it comes to winter escapes. The coldest months also offer the chance to witness the aurora australis (southern lights) dancing along the horizon, best spotted in Dunedin close to a new moon. There are yet more reasons to look skyward in July: the rise of the Pleiades star cluster marks the start of Matariki (Maori New Year), which is celebrated with cultural festivals and feasts. Visit Mt John Observatory in Tekapo, which sits within an international dark sky reserve, for unbeatable stargazing.

Northwest England

6.  Northwest England

We’ll be the first to admit that the weather in the northwest of England can be, how do we say, a little less than optimum. Drizzle persists for most of the year, but July sees the sun finally break through with all the enthusiasm of an excitable child. The big cities of the northwest follow suit, with Liverpool and Manchester in particular shining brightest when the sun is out. And while you ’ re there, don't miss out on The Beatles exhibition, celebrating 60 years of ‘A Hard Day ’ s Night’ (July 10, 2024). Sure, the north is defined by its drizzle, but you can’t beat an Aigburth beer garden on a Saturday afternoon. Throw in some excellent park festivals, and you’ve got yourself a very special part of the world indeed.

Hoi An, Vietnam

7.  Hoi An, Vietnam

As the monsoon rains fall in  Hanoi  and Ho Chi Minh City, savvy travellers in  Vietnam  head to the central coast, where the weather is dry and warm. Some of the country’s most beautiful beaches are right here, along with Unesco-listed cities and jaw-dropping national parks. Get mesmerised witnessing the Lantern Festival on 19th July in the historic port city of  Hoi An , where lantern-strewn streets reveal Chinese temples and ancient teahouses. Then head out of town to laze on the stretches of white sand around  Da Nang , brave Hai Van Pass on a motorbike tour, and visit Hue’s Imperial citadel before heading inland to see the gargantuan Phong Na Caves.

Montreal, Canada

8.  Montreal, Canada

Montreal ’s Canada Day celebrations kickstart a whole month of summer fun in a city more often associated with icy winters. The highlights usually include Sainte Catherine Street Fair (the largest in the country) and the world’s biggest international comedy festival, Just for Laughs, while Cirque Festival ensures you won’t have to bend over backwards to find street entertainment – performers from Cirque du Soleil, the National Circus School and others put on tonnes of shows to celebrate one of Quebec ’s most famous art forms. But if festival-hopping isn’t your sort of thing, fear not. July is still a great time to discover this incredible city – and  fuel up courtesy of the city’s best chefs at  Time Out Market Montreal .

Madagascar

9.  Madagascar

Home to some of the most diverse wildlife on the planet, Madagascar is a joy to visit in July, when the weather is cooler and drier, making lemur spotting on rainforest treks more comfortable. Humpback whales migrate here to calve their young at this time of year – spot them in Tulear and Nosy Be, or experience the humpback whale festival on Nosy Boraha. In Morondava, the local community celebrates the island’s precious ecology with the Baobab Fosa festival, where you can spot fossa (a relative of the mongoose), and walk the dazzling Avenue of the Baobabs.

Singapore

10.  Singapore

Singapore is a food lover’s dream year-round, but to taste it at its best, you’ll want to head there in July. That’s when the island city celebrates its multicultural cuisine with the Singapore Food Festival. From cooking masterclasses and fine dining events to a street food extravaganza, this week-long celebration of local flavour is worth skipping breakfast for. Had enough of the heat? Find refuge in the air-conditioned malls on Orchard Road and indulge in a spot of retail therapy – the Great Singapore Sale runs nearly all month, offering great deals and steep discounts.

West Coast, North America

11.  West Coast, North America

Sound the road trip klaxon! California and the Pacific Northwest are calling. Apart from July 4, when roads in the US will be rammed with long weekenders on their way to family barbecues and baseball games, this month is a fine time to discover the best of the American and Canadian West Coast. Whether you want to catch some rays in San Diego , forest bathe in Oregon , tour Seattle ’s street art or simply make the most of Vancouver 's least rainy month of the year, this slice of North America is as diverse as its days are long. And make sure to catch Comic Con in California from 25-28 July 2024.

Discover the best stops on a  California road trip

Japan

12.  Japan

Following the country’s reopening last year,  Japan ’s capital Tokyo and other key sights have reverted back to the norm, although that still means hot and busy. So if you can, make time earlier in the month to explore the likes of  Kyoto ,  Osaka  and Hiroshima, as well as lesser-known spots such as Shiretoko Peninsula or Hateruma Island. Or, if you’re shorter on time, stick to  day trips from the city  and complete your own athletic feats by  summiting Mount Fuji  or catching some waves in surf town Kamakura.

Provence, France

13.  Provence, France

From Avignon and Marseille to Nice , St Tropez and Cannes, Provence is packed with historic cities and stylish towns – but don’t forget the swathes of pastoral bliss in between. Come in July to sample crisp dry rosé at Château Gassier (which usually runs outdoor tastings and a cinema under the stars in the summer months), frolic in the lavender fields around Aix en Provence and Senanque Abbey before the harvest, join the Fête Nationale celebrations in pretty much every single town and village, or catch a glimpse of Tour de France riders along the dizzyingly high trail of Mont Ventoux.

Where is the cheapest place to fly in July?

With so many great July flight deals on offer, it really depends on where you want to wander. You could head north to discover jaw-dropping scenery via a July flight to Newfoundland . Sure, it doesn’t get too hot, but with July highs of 66°F, you’ll be safe with little more than a sweater across your shoulders. For a further flung adventure, fly Down Under to Australia , where even in winter you can surf, scuba dive and sightsee in the sun.

How do I find the best flights in July?

To find the best July flights, your first stop is the search bar. Pop in your preferred dates and destination and hit the search button. All that’s left to do is select your travel baggage preferences and sort your results by price, duration and more to grab the best seat in the house (plane).

Will July flight ticket prices decrease around Independence Day?

The days surrounding The Fourth of July are always popular with air travelers, so prices are likely to go up rather than down. 20 Amazing Places to Visit in July in the USA

Summer crowds can be an issue anywhere, but if you are savvy enough, you will find some amazing places to explore this month. From my time traveling around this month, h ere are my favorite places to get you started…

1. Finger Lakes, New York State

The Finger Lakes, NY

This area is filled with beautiful watery landscapes punctuated by hundreds of stunning waterfalls. Some tumble between forested cliffs from upwards of 150 ft.

The awe-inspiring Taughannock Falls, which plunges from 215ft, is one of the few you can swim in. I personally love the whole of the Fingerlakes area; it’s a tranquil and scenic gem, and summer is the perfect time to visit.

Much of the waterfall action is centered around Lake Cayuga’s shores and Ithaca’s picturesque town, home of Cornell University. Ithaca is everything you’d expect from an Ivy League Town, full of stunning historic brownstone buildings and leafy avenues.

I recommend exploring all the beautiful parks and gardens which are in full bloom during this month and the weather is very warm too!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 35 Lake Front Dr, Geneva, NY 14456
  • Average temperature – 28 degrees

My favorite highlights…

  • Exploring Watkins Glen State Park, which features 18 stunning waterfalls.
  • Enjoying an afternoon out on the waters on a Wine Tasting Boat Tour!
  • Taking a Sea Plane Tour which was a very memorable experience flying over Watkins Glen, Seneca Lake, and Canandaigua Lake.

2. Bar Harbor, Maine

Bar Harbor, Maine summer

Bar Harbour is a picturesque town on Mount Desert Island. Its shoreline sits along Frenchman’s Bay which is the gateway to the beautiful Acadia National Park.

I’m a real foodie, and I loved their top-class dining spots and being able to eat al fresco at the harbourside restaurants.

For Nature Lovers, I highly recommend going on a Nature Cruises trip, which sails regularly from Bar Harbour. They offer an opportunity to spot porpoises, seals, eagles, and other marine life, as well as elegant mansions and the scenic lighthouse at Egg Rock.

I suggest exploring the nearby magnificent Acadia National Park, which spans 47,000 acres of rugged Atlantic coastline interspersed by dense woodland, rocky beaches, and granite peaks such as Cadillac Mountain, the East Coast’s highest point. The scenery is just extraordinary here!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 2 Cottage Street, Bar Harbor, ME 04609
  • Average temperature – 27 degrees

My highlights…

  • Strolling along the gorgeous Shore Path coastal trail, where I could view the surrounding small islands.
  • Admiring the wonderful New England Historic Architecture filled with character and quirky features.
  • Hopping on a boat over to Mount Desert Island, home to Acadia National Park and lots of outdoor activities like hiking and cycling.

3. Olympic National Park, Washington

Olympic National Park

Olympic National Park lies within the Olympic Peninsula in the Pacific Northwest. Stretching northwards towards the Canadian border, the park is unique as it encompasses over 900,000 acres and three specific ecosystems: temperate rainforests, glaciated mountains, and wild Pacific coastline.

In July, you are (almost!) guaranteed pleasant temperatures (although not too hot), making it an excellent time of year for wildlife spotting, hiking, and water sports. In the summer, there is also the opportunity to bike and stargaze on Hurricane Ridge.

If you only have a short time here, I’d recommend staying at the characterful Lake Quinault Lodge . This rustic lodge, built in the 1920s, is on the lake’s shores on the edge of the excellent Olympic National Forest.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 3002 Mt Angeles Rd, Port Angeles, WA 98362
  • Average temperature – 17 degrees

My personal highlights…

  • Hiking the Obstruction Point Trail and seeing the gorgeous scenery.
  • Visiting the incredible Hoh Rain Forest, the trees there are very unique!
  • Spending a night at Hoh Rainforest Campground surrounded by stunning scenery.

4. Yachats, Oregon

Yachats - best places to visit in July

The minute I set foot in Yachats, I loved it. Perched alongside Cape Perpetua on an unspoiled stretch of rugged Oregon Coastline, Yachats is remarkable and still a relatively hidden gem.

It’s home to tide pools, black basalt cliffs, fern gullies, and beautiful lighthouses amid crashing ocean waves. It’s a great place to kick back, relax, and take in the wonderful scenery.

There’s a good handful of charming resturants and shops, and all the shop owners we chatted with were keen to tell us about all the fantastic community events, from ClamBakes on the beach to the weekly summer farmers market.

I didn’t want to leave, and if you go, I am pretty sure you won’t either!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 241 Oregon Coast Hwy Box 728, Yachats, OR 97498
  • Checking out the eclectic variety of shops in the downtown area.
  • Tasting locally crafted award-winning beer at Yachats Brewing + Farm Store.
  • Wandering along the beach to see the dramatic shoreline filled with magnificent rock formations and sea views.

5. Geneva-on-the-lake, Ohio

Geneva On The Lake Ohio

Established in 1869, I’m a big fan of this family-friendly vacation destination. Situated in Geneva State Park on the shores of Lake Erie, I love how quaint and old-fashioned this place is.

From June to August , you can bask in the summer sunshine on one of the beautiful lakeside beaches, charter a boat, or try any of the water sports available at the marina.

I also recommend trying the canopy tours, including sky bridges, zip lines, and adventure rope courses, for a real thrill. One of my favorite experiences was a laid-back tour of local breweries and vineyards. Alternatively, you can also play golf or eat al fresco while watching a beautiful sunset.

Explore some of the cute little local shops, swim in the crystal lake waters, or hike on the trails, trying to spot birds. Mini-golf and amusement arcades galore keep the kids happy, too.

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 5540 Lake Rd E, Geneva, OH 44041
  • Renting a jet ski!
  • Take a trip to Madsen Donuts, filled with deliciously flavored donuts and friendly customer service!
  • Eating a hearty American breakfast while gazing at the lake at Horizons Restaurant & Lounge.

6. Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota

Voyageurs National Park in July

This is a fantastic park to stay in the summer. It straddles the border between Northern Minnesota and Canada, consisting of acres of interconnecting lakes and waterways. The biggest landmass in the park is the Kabetogama Peninsula, which lies entirely within its borders.

Here, it’s all about the water, with many of the most beautiful parts only accessible by boat. To the east of the park is Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness, a stunning collection of forests, glacier lakes, and streams that draw millions of outdoor-loving visitors annually.

There are many accommodation options here, ranging from cute houseboats to lodges. I highly recommend exploring as many 50 miles of trails on the peninsula as possible. Amazing overlooks punctuate them, so don’t forget to bring your camera!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: Voyageurs National Park- Rainy Lake Visitor Center, 1797 Township Rd 342, International Falls, MN 56649
  • Average temperature – 25 degrees

  • Admiring the beautiful Ellsworth Rock Gardens, built in the 1940s they took 20 years to complete.

7. Boston, Massachusetts

Boston - best places to visit in July

I personally think Boston is an extra special travel spot in July as it hosts the fabulous Summer Pops Concerts and breathtaking Fourth of July fireworks over the River Charles.

These are connected to Harborfest, a week-long celebration of the city’s unique maritime history that kicks off on Independence Day.

When here, I recommend chilling out on one of the fantastic city beaches, grabbing a picnic and a bottle of wine, enjoying Shakespeare on the common, or watching an outdoor movie under the stars.

Boston has beautiful parks, fantastic architecture (both old and new) and a splendid esplanade, perfect for romantic summer strolls and plenty of picnics.

I also love the excellent food and craft beer scene, the al fresco dining options, harbor cruises, and the incredible whale-watching opportunities ( May to October ).

Half Moon Bay California

This is a gorgeous coastal spot to spend a summer weekend or use as a base to explore the northern Californian coastline.

Its compact downtown area is filled with quaint eateries and attractive shops selling boutique products, from unique arts and crafts to delicious wine.

There are many seafood restaurants here, but for a quirky dining experience, I’d recommend Daddy’Os, housed in an old rail car and serving delicious comfort food.

Half Moon Bay is surrounded by protected parks and beaches, including the Mavericks, a famous stretch of coastline that hosts a world-famous annual surf competition. Other protected beaches, such as Poplars, are great spots for a sunset picnic, and the beautiful beaches here don’t get crowded like some neighbouring stretches.

I love that it’s a place that maintains a calm and relaxed coastal vibe even in the peak summer months.

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 235 Main Street Half Moon Bay, CA 94019
  • Average temperature  – 18 degrees

  • Eating a hearty vegetarian lasagne at Half Moon Bay Joe’s.

9. St Michaels, Maryland

St Michaels, Maryland - best summer vacations

Once home to shipbuilding and oyster fishing, St Michaels is a small waterfront town in Talbot County, Maryland, home to around 1,000 people.

I love that it still has the look and feel of a 19th-century seaport and is home to a charming Old Town filled with historic houses; it’s a picture-postcard pretty spot!

Topping the list of beautiful, low-key summer vacation spots, it is known for its picturesque water bodies, which I think are needed during hot summer days (average temperatures are around 31°C).

It has fun, family-friendly attractions, attractive independent shops, quaint resturants, buzzing marinas, and the picturesque Chesapeake Bay.

Whether you want to sail on a yacht, swim to cool off on a hot afternoon or treat your taste buds to some mouth-watering local cuisines, I think St Michaels is a great option!

  • Enjoying an exceptional dining experience at 208 Talbot Restaurant.

10. Buffalo River, Arkansas

Buffalo National River Summer

This is an excellent option for outdoor enthusiasts, with many accommodation options. The river here is 153 miles long, and 100 miles of trails traverse its banks. Activities include canoeing, kayaking, rafting, tubing, rock climbing, swimming, and mountain biking (rentals are all available in the area).

The Hawksbill Crag trail is the only designated hiking trail through the wilderness area. When I hiked it, I saw incredible views of the steep bluffs formed by the winding river gorge.

I also loved the beautiful oak and hickory forests, ancient caves, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife spotting opportunities, including a herd of over 500 free-ranging elk.

There is plenty for history lovers, too; I would recommend visiting the eerie Rush Ghost Town and the even creepier Peppersauce Ghost Town at Calico Rock; both are designated historic districts with very chequered pasts!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 170 Ranger Rd, St Joe, AR 72675
  • Average temperature  – 33 degrees
  • Taking a dip in the Steel Creek swimming hole,
  • Soaring through the sky on a zipline on the Buffalo River Canopy Tour.
  • Discovering the magnificent caves in the upper area, the Mystic Caves and Crystal Dome Caverns.

11. Traverse City, Lake Michigan

Traverse City in July

With a shoreline spanning 307 miles, I found choosing where to stay on Lake Michigan a little overwhelming. Still, I loved the spot I eventually decided on – Traverse City in Northern Michigan.

It was an excellent base to explore some of the most beautiful beaches and nature reserves along the lakeshore. It’s also a fantastic and vibrant city in  its own right.

I became a fan of the city because it offered fantastic boutique shopping, microbreweries, food carts, gastro pubs, and fine dining. It also has abundant public art, museums, galleries, and excellent urban walking, biking, and boating trails.

The Old Mission Peninsula, just a short drive from downtown, had some beautiful parks overlooking the water. Haserot Beach was an excellent relaxing place, and Bryant Park was the perfect picnic spot.

The park offers numerous activities , including a curated lineup of campfire programs, nature hikes, and arts and crafts classes. It also has 12 miles of hiking trails and roped-off swimming areas along the banks of the lake and river.

If you love the view from the water, I recommend hiring a Yakanoe, kayak, or paddleboat. There’s a steam train, golf course, visitor center, and numerous gorgeous wooden cabins to stay in, all nestled within the stunning mountainous terrain.

Don’t miss catching the sunset over the impressive Broken Bow Dam!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: Broken Bow, OK 74728

  • Renting a kayak.
  • Stopping by the visitor center and discovering all the activities going on.

Block Island, Rhode Island beach in the summer

If you’re looking for a relaxing beach summer getaway, I’d recommend Block Island. It is an incredible destination that houses the historic Southeast Lighthouse, the natural clay cliffs of the Mohegan Buffs, and many beautiful beaches.

You can sunbathe in warm weather, dip in the sea on any of the island’s scenic beaches (notably Crescent Beach), sail, bicycle, or hike—there are plenty of things to do!

I recommend heading there for the famous annual Fourth of July parade, which includes a fabulous fireworks display! There are also plenty of accommodations on the island, ranging from cute Bed and Breakfasts and rental cottages to beachfront hotels.

14. Grand Teton National Park , Wyoming

Grand Teton National Park

Set amidst the spectacular Teton Mountain Range in Northwestern Wyoming , Grand Teton National Park, I love the breathtaking scenery, alpine lakes, and hiking trails!

I recommend boat trips to Jenny Lake or the Massive Jackson Lake, and for more adventurous people, go  rafting down the rapids.

The 100-mile John D. Rockefeller Memorial Parkway is the perfect challenge for keen cyclists, taking in some of the park’s best wildlife and scenery.

Climbing enthusiasts can tackle Grand Teton, the tallest peak in the 40-mile Teton Range. My favorite highlight, though, was the spectacular sunsets!

At its Northernmost point, it provides a gateway to the breathtaking wilderness of Northern Cascades National Park.

I love that the flowers are in full bloom, and the huckleberries are at their sweetest from mid-July!

All the trails and roads are open in July, and I personally think it’s the perfect time for a drive along the scenic Going-To-The-Sun Road.

Miles of hiking trails traverse the park, and there is a vast collection of exciting wildlife, including rare wolverines, Canadian Lynx black bears, grizzlies, and mountain lions.

Although July is usually warm and temperate, I recommend preparing for any eventuality as the weather can change on a whim, and parts of the park are incredibly remote!

From July through August, wildflowers transform the Paradise area of the park in an abundance of color, and the slightly warmer temperatures make it the perfect time for hiking (but you’ll still need to wrap up warm).

cheap destinations to travel in july

Summer is among one of the most popular times to travel . The warm sun, vibrant nature and thriving people are hallmark features of this favored season. But not every part of summer is considered equal. There are more favorable months of the summer season. Like June, which is a peak time to travel during summer due to many factors. For example, the weather is ideal and nature is thriving. June is the first big vacation month of the summer season so the overwhelming summer crowds may not be present. But some travelers may be rightfully concerned about the price of travel during the summer and where to go . So we have compiled a list of some of the cheapest places to visit in June.

Budget-Friendly Destinations

cheap destinations to travel in july

For budget travelers, selecting an affordable place to visit is of the utmost importance. Avoiding the most expensive places to travel to will help travelers not break the bank as they explore the world. Places like North America are typically crowded and quite expensive in June. But there are still great options that offer fun and affordable experiences.

Reasons to Visit Punta Cana

Punta Cana is a town located in the Dominican Republic. The resort area is a paradise for beach lovers and is popular with east coast travelers. It is a popular place for couples, but groups, solo travelers and families enjoy the destination just as much. In June, Punta Cana has great weather conditions. The temperature is around 75 to 90 degrees so it is nice and sunny. The Atlantic hurricane season technically starts in June and lasts until November, but severe tropical storms are not popular. June is not one of the rainiest months so it is still a pretty good time to visit. Also, summer crowds come to Punta Cana around July and August. This area commonly has crowds, but there may be slightly less during June.

An Affordable Destination

Punta Cana is not an exceedingly expensive place to visit. The town even has modest prices for all inclusive resorts. Travelers will notice discounts on vacation packages. Accommodations will likely cost between $50 to $150 a night during the month of June, so there are varying prices that fit an array of budgets. It is important to note that inclusive resorts are a bit cheaper than resorts. Plus, flights to the Punta Cana International Airport (PJJ) are well priced during this month. This destination is great for families and groups due to its affordability.

Costa Rica

Reasons to Visit Costa Rica

Costa Rica is known for its calming ambiance , impeccable views and wellness experiences. The weather during June is usually pleasant. Temperatures are usually between 70 and 90 degrees during the month with some light showers. These weather conditions make an ideal environment as nature gets greener and more full. Because June is technically not in the dry season, there is likely to be less crowds too. So tourist spots will be more quiet and enjoyable.

During this month travelers will be able to enjoy some cheaper seasonal prices. Accommodations, tours and even flights are less expensive in June. Kids are still in school in Costa Rica (and the United States) during June, so the area is less crowded during the day. This generally means that there is more flexibility and freedom for travelers. Another thing to note is that meals typically cost around $10 to $20, depending on where travelers go. Also, reservations are not necessarily needed in Costa Rica.

Reasons to Visit Cancun

Cancún, Mexico is a great place to visit for stunning beaches and exciting nightlife. And travelers will not lack options for things to do. There is plenty to do in Cancun including nature exploration and enjoying local cuisine. Travelers can even take part in cenote exploration. One of the most popular cenotes near Cancun is the cenote Verde Lucero. An important thing for travelers to note is that there are sporadic showers in June. But the showers are short, so if travelers are not opposed to dealing with them every now and then they may be able to avoid the crowds of other summer months.

Cancun is a well known resort town. So there are great all-inclusive resort options and deals that fit many budgets. The tourists that come during the high travel season have likely not come yet, there may be great deals as a result. Also, the food in Cancun and flights to the destination are not generally expensive. With these things considered, Cancun is one of the cheapest places to visit in June, especially if tourists visit early in the month.

Fort Lauderdale

cheap destinations to travel in july

Reasons to Visit Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale has some of the best beaches on the East Coast. It is known for its beaches but there are other features that keep travelers coming back. There is a thriving art culture and local events are readily available to travelers in Fort Lauderdale. During June the city has idyllic weather. Temperatures usually are around 75 to 90 degrees during this month. The year round average in Fort Lauderdale is 77 degrees, so travelers are sure to experience warm temperatures. There are about 13 hours of sunshine during the day in June and the sea is mild.

If travelers can beat the heat and don’t mind the presence of children on summer break, they will reap some monetary benefits. There are significant hotel deals during June. Plus, in comparison to March and July, the most expensive times to fly to Fort Lauderdale, June has relatively cheap flight prices too.

Here's the Cheapest Time to Travel to These Popular European Cities

But, even though 20% of Americans are willing to go into debt to afford their trips this summer—putting your vacation on credit isn't ideal. So how can you make it across the Atlantic to a charming Euro city for cheap? Well, the tips to save money on travel are numerous. There are timetables for the best time to buy international flights and travel deals you can keep an eye on. Travel hacks are an endless well of good and bad advice.

One of the most important ways to plan that cheap trip comes down to timing: you might just have to sacrifice that summer vacation in exchange for a shoulder season vacation. Shoulder seasons are the periods between peak and off-peak seasons, like late spring and late summer. According to a new study from Radical Storage , the best time to book travel for Europe is for this shoulder season—and two cities come out on top for where you'll save the most money during this period.

By analyzing over 12,000 hotel prices and data from Google Flights, Radical Storage determined that Paris, France has had the best shoulder season discounts on hotels; you can save an average of 60.3% during shoulder season compared to peak season. Budapest, Hungary, has the largest average savings on flights during shoulder season. Travelers can expect to save 56.6% on shoulder season flights to Budapest.

"Shoulder season is the period before or after peak season but not yet the off-season. For example, many European destinations have a very busy summer (July/August) but May, June, September, and October may be considered shoulder season (it varies per destination), while January could be considered the off-season or low season," the study states. "Visiting destinations in shoulder season usually means lower costs and lower crowds, while still keeping good enough weather for tourism."

The study also determined the timeframe for popular destinations' shoulder seasons—which can help you plan future trips. For example, Athens, Greece peak month is August, while the best shoulder season month is April. Alternatively, Kyoto, Japan's peak tourism month is October, while the best shoulder season month is June. Here's the detailed list of popular destination's shoulder season months:

Lidl has rushed to remove old references to so-called fake farm branding on its website after being questioned by MPs.

The retail chain told MPs yesterday that a picture of its "Strathvale farm chicken" was a "mistake" after telling them they did not use so-called fake farms.

Appearing in front of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee on fairness in the food supply chain, Lidl GB's chief commercial officer Richard Bourns was questioned on the fairness of supermarkets using fake farms to market their food.

Mr Bourns, who was questioned by committee member Rosie Duffield on using "Strathvale farm" branding for meat products, replied: "We don't use Strathvale farms, we use Strathvale.

"We do not use farm brands, just to be absolutely clear."

Committee chairman Robert Goodwill, who had access to the internet, said: "Oh wait a minute, we have here a Strathvale farm Scottish large chicken, for £3.85. Gosh that's cheap.

"So there is on the website at least, a reference to Strathvale farm."

Mr Bourns replied: "If there is a reference to Strathvale farms on our website I'd want to take that away and correct it.

"It could be the case that our website is not up to date.

"We do not have an online offering but I can categorically tell you we do not have farms brands in our business, just to be absolutely clear."

Following the committee hearing a Lidl spokesperson said: "Any historic web pages featuring old packaging that appear via a search engine are in the process of being removed to ensure complete accuracy."

A fairly tepid but positive start for shares in London this morning.

The FTSE 100 was 0.3% up at 8,196 in early deals.

Industrial stocks led the way after a quiet morning for companies reporting on their progress.

Sentiment will be driven later by reaction to the latest US employment report.

An above-forecast number for net new hiring would be likely to spark further market concern that the prospects for an interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve are even further away.

The Fed is concerned by headline inflation numbers in the world's biggest economy and strong figures for new jobs and wages could prove spooky for equity investors.

Elsewhere, oil prices remain on course to end the week sharply lower.

Brent crude is trading at $83 a barrel - down from $88 levels seen on Monday.

It's mostly a consequence of easing tensions in the Middle East and, if sustained, could help fuel pump costs come down a bit in the coming weeks.

It can be hard to balance getting nutritious foods that make you feel good without spending a lot.

In this series, we try to find the healthiest options in the supermarket for the best value - and have enlisted the help of  Sunna Van Kampen,  founder of Tonic Health ,  who went viral on social media for reviewing food in the search of healthier choices.

The series does not aim to identify the outright healthiest option, but to help you get better nutritional value for as little money as possible.

Today, we're looking at the breakfast staple - cereal.

A sugar trap?

"Protein and good fats are what fill you up and satiate you to get your day going," Sunna says.

"Cereal unfortunately is a sugar and carb-heavy start which causes your blood sugar to spike and as a result you feel hungry way before lunch time."

A glance at the nutrition labels and you'll see the problem.

"Some popular brands contain 35% sugar or up to 12g of sugar per 30g serving - that's already half of the daily recommended intake for children," Sunna says.

That's before accounting for the fact that most people double up on recommended portion sizes.

"According to research the average bowl weighs 73g rather than 30g suggested portion size - that means your child could be having their daily sugar quota for breakfast before school," Sunna says.

Healthier cereal choices

"The key to healthier cereal bowls is to ensure minimal sugar and maximum fibre - which is where options like Weetabix come to the forefront as a better option - at 4.2% sugar and 10% fibre," Sunna says.

Among the main brands, this is hard to beat.

Frosties and Crunchy Nut don't fare well at 35% and 37% sugar respectively. Cornflakes at 8% and Coco Pops at 17% are better - but still high.

Alternative breakfasts

Greek yogurt:  "High in protein and packed with probiotics, Greek yogurt is my breakfast go to. Top it with some fresh berries and a sprinkle of seeds for an antioxidant boost."

Porridge:  "Oats are a great breakfast staple, offering a good dose of fibre, but context matters.

"It's great before a run or the gym but if you are just sitting at your desk all day it will spike your blood sugar and may be best to add more protein and fats to it.

"Try adding peanut butter or protein powder for a more filling breakfast with more stable blood sugar."

Eggs:  "Boiled, poached, or scrambled, eggs are a protein-rich option that can keep you fuelled till lunch. Pair them with sourdough toast and you have possibly the most well-rounded value breakfast."

"Switching to these alternatives can drastically cut down your sugar intake and increase your energy levels."

We know cereal is a value-for-money and easy breakfast option, but let's have a closer look at the numbers.

If we take the average cereal bowl at 73g, a cost per bowl looks like 50p for Crunchy Nut cereal and about 25p for the 250ml of milk that goes with it.

"So, your daily breakfast is costing you 75p per day or £273.75 per year for the privilege of 9.3kg of sugar per year," Sunna says.

In contrast, a typical medium free-range egg is 25p.

Put three on a slice of sourdough (15p per slice) and an optimal breakfast has only cost you 90p a day or £328.5 a year.

"So, you can swap over 18g of sugar every morning for over 18g of protein for just £54.75 extra per year," Sunna says.

"A health investment, well worth the money."

However, if you want to stick with cereal - supermarket own-label brands are usually 60% cheaper than branded versions.

With the mortgage market proving more volatile than expected this year, and rates rising again, we're launching a feature providing an overview of the market at the end of each week - and outlining the best deals.

The independent experts at  Moneyfactscompare.co.uk  will be here every Friday. Commentary this week comes from their finance expert Rachel Springall, who has focused on the first-time buyer market...

Fixed-rate mortgages are once again on the rise, with many of the UK's biggest high-street lenders upping rates this week, including Santander, Halifax, Nationwide and NatWest. Lenders have been reacting to growing speculation that interest rates will remain higher for longer.

Economists predict that the Bank of England will hold interest rates next Thursday but might cut base rate in the summer. Week on week, the overall average two- and five-year fixed rates rose to 5.91% and 5.49%.

This week the lowest two-year fix for first-time buyers with a 5% deposit comes from Loughborough Building Society, priced at 5.49%, which comes with a free valuation incentive and carries a £999 product fee.

First-time buyers with a 10% deposit will find the lowest two-year fixed rate offered by Clydesdale Bank, priced at 5.19%, which does not carry any incentives and charges a £1,499 product fee.

Those new buyers with a 5% deposit who want to fix for longer will find the lowest five-year fixed mortgage comes from The Co-operative Bank this week. Priced at 5.21%, this deal carries a £999 fee but borrowers get £250 in cashback and a free-valuation incentive.

Borrowers with a 10% deposit who wish to fix for five-years will find Clydesdale Bank offering the lowest rate this week priced at 4.64%, which charges a £1,499 fee but does not carry any incentives.

As a first-time buyer, it's possible you have exhausted your savings on building up a 5% deposit and will use surplus cash to cover removal costs and legal fees.

If you are looking to save on the upfront cost of your loan, then a Best Buy mortgage could be the most cost-effective choice.

This week one of the top packages on a two-year fixed mortgage comes from Coventry Building Society priced at 5.74% and HSBC priced at 5.79%, both of which come with a free valuation, but HSBC will also pay you £750 as cashback and Coventry Building Society will pay £500 in cashback.

A five-year fixed mortgage may be more appealing for you to guarantee your monthly repayments for longer.

HSBC has a deal priced at 5.30% which carries a free valuation and £1,000 cashback, but if you want a lower rate, then Coventry Building Society is priced at 5.27%, and offers a free valuation and £500 cashback.

If you live in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland you don't have to pay for your NHS prescriptions - but in England they now cost £9.90 after a 25p rise this week.

Fee-free options remain in place for some, such as those who are pregnant, have certain disabilities, students or the elderly.

But if you're not exempt, there are still some means of cutting the costs of treatments.

Prepayment certificates

Prescription prepayment certificates (PPC) cover NHS prescriptions over a given time period, no matter how many medicines you need.

There are two options: A three-month PPC (£32.05), which will start to save you money if you buy four or more prescriptions in that period, or a 12-month PPC (£114.50), which pays off if you buy 12 or more in a year.

Ask for a larger prescription

Doctors may agree to prescribe a longer course of medicine - such as two months' worth instead of one, halving the cost.

Just ask the question - they might say yes, especially if there's no danger of overuse.

Menopause medication

The NHS offers a particular PPC for hormone replacement therapy.

It lasts for 12 months and costs £19.80.

Women can use the PCC as many times as they need within the year.

You might not need a prescription

For some ailments, there are over-the-counter options sold cheaper than their prescribed alternative. You can ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Pint-sized bottles of wine will be allowed on UK shelves from autumn under new post-Brexit trade rules - although doubts have been raised over their demand.

Seven changes to pre-packaged wine sizes are due to come into force on 19 September.

The move to introduce the 568ml size of wine, to sit alongside 200ml and 500ml measures already available, was announced in December and hailed by ministers as a Brexit "freedom".

Pint bottles of Champagne were sold in the UK before Britain joined the European Common Market and were on shelves until 1973.

JD Sports has told head office staff they must return to the office at least four days a week .

Pubs could stay open late during the Euros this summer, according to The Sun .

Home Secretary James Cleverly hinted he was looking into extending pub opening hours for the tournament on The Sun show Never Mind The Ballots.

He said: "I will certainly look into it."

We've been bringing you news of plenty of bank switch deals offering free cash these past few months, but Virgin Money has a different kind of incentive for switchers - a 12% interest rate.

People who switch to its M Account, M Plus Account or Club M Account will be able to get bonus interest rates of 10% gross/10.47% AER (fixed).

This is on top of the 2% gross/2.02% AER (variable) interest rate already offered on current account balances up to £1,000 - meaning customers can get an interest rate of 12%.

No other savings accounts offer interest rates this high, and the bonus applies for a year.

TikTok will restore millions of songs to its app after settling a royalty dispute with Universal Music Group.

Users had been unable to make videos featuring songs from the likes of Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande due to a row over how much TikTok was paying.

The fight had led to Universal withdrawing music from some of the world's most famous singers.

The dispute appears to have been settled as the companies announced "improved remuneration" for artists.

More than 10,500 black cab drivers in London have launched a £250m legal case against Uber.

They accuse the app of breaking the capital's taxi booking rules and deliberately misleading authorities to secure a licence.

Transport for London (TfL) rules state drivers cannot take bookings directly from customers and must instead use a centralised system.

The drivers, who are being advised by law firm Mishcon de Reya, argue they have faced unfair competition from Uber and that it knowingly broke these rules.

Uber has denied these allegations and said the claims are unfounded.

The company has faced numerous challenges in London, including refusals from TfL to renew its licence which were later successfully appealed.

Billie Eilish fans are complaining about "outrageous" ticket prices for her Hit Me Hard and Soft tour.

The 22-year-old singer unveiled an 81-date tour programme this week, sending fans rushing to secure tickets.

But some expressed disbelief on social media at the prices.

"I know I moan about this all the time, but look at the price of Billie Eilish tickets," one fan called Marianne wrote on X, sharing a screenshot of seated tickets priced at £398.50.

"Something seriously needs to be done about ticket prices, it's f*****g outrageous!"

Another complained they had paid less for Taylor Swift's Eras Tour, which was also criticised for high ticket prices.

A fan called Liv tagged Eilish, Live Nation and Ticketmaster, writing: "Are you ok? £145 for standing tickets is atrocious."

Thousands of people who receive government benefits, including Universal Credit, will be paid as early as tomorrow.

This is because there's a bank holiday coming up on 6 May which will affect benefits paid by both the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and HMRC (they don't pay benefits on bank holidays).

A statement on the government website reads: "If your payment date is on a weekend or a bank holiday you'll usually be paid on the working day before. This may be different for tax credits and child benefit."

Here are the 11 different government benefits that are expected to be paid early:

  • Universal credit;
  • State Pension;
  • Pension Credit;
  • Disability Living Allowance;
  • Attendance Allowance;
  • Carer's Allowance;
  • Child Benefit;
  • Income Support;
  • Jobseekers Allowance;
  • Personal Independence Payment;
  • Tax credits (such as Working Tax Credit)

Will your benefit payment change?

No, you'll be paid the same amount you usually receive.

Benefits are usually paid straight into your bank, building society or credit account.
