Laid-back little Dalyan may be prime package-tour fodder, but away from the main street, lined cheek-to-jowl with restaurants and bars, it retains much of its original sleepy riverside character. Once a small farming community, today the atmospheric ruins of Kaunos and the hinterland of fertile, beautiful waterways bring an armada of excursion boats from Marmaris and Fethiye during summer.

How To Visit Dalyan, Turkiye: Why We Loved This Town And So Will You!

Discover the best things to do in Dalyan, Turkiye. Explore ancient ruins, relax on stunning beaches, and take a boat tour through the picturesque Dalyan Delta. Find out why Dalyan is one of the top hidden gems in Turkiye.

A tour boat cruises past the Lycian tombs in Dalyan, Turkiye

Tucked into the hillsides about an hour from the busy tourist city of Fethiye sits a far quieter Turkish town with just as many stunning attractions.

Dalyan, Turkiye, with its bustling riverfront, gorgeous landscapes, and beautiful ruins, is home to happy locals and a handful of expats who realize that this sleepy town, just a short drive from one of Turkiye’s most important beaches, is one of the best places to visit in the country .

Dalyan lies just a few hours east of the cotton-white terraces of Pamukkale and smack in between the tourist-heavy cities of Marmaris and Fethiye. Because of its position, Dalyan lies completely under the radar of most Turkiye itineraries.

Those who venture off the beaten path into Dalyan are in for a treat. This beautiful town is one of Turkiye’s hidden gems. Combining cliff-side Lycian tombs, lakes, rivers, a decent little foodie scene, and easy access to one of the best beaches in Turkiye and none of the shoulder-to-shoulder crowds of its larger cousins, Dalyan is a treat to visit.

For my family , Dalyan just felt “right.” The town had all the makings of an incredible destination: history, adventure, nature, beautiful accommodations, and great food, but none of the stress of big, popular cities.

About Dalyan, Turkiye

Table of Contents

The Dalyan city center

Located in the Mugla province in southwest Turkiye, Dalyan is a quiet retreat popular with British expats. The town is located along the Dalyan River, which connects Lake Koycegiz with the Mediterranean Sea. Like much of Turkiye, Dalyan has been home to civilizations dating back for thousands of years. Its rich history is proudly on display among the region’s gorgeous natural beauty.

Dalyan, at first glance, comes across as a fairly typical small town in Turkiye. Narrow, winding streets meander among farmland and through neighborhoods dotted with gardens. Colorful houses line the roads and, as you reach the center of town, shops, and restaurants welcome locals and visitors alike.

This town of around 8,000 residents revolves around the Dalyan River, which flows past the town. The river is a vital fishing ground thanks to the shallow waters and the maze of reeds that create the perfect breeding environment for bass, mullet, and sea bream. In fact, the name “Dalyan” translates to “Fishing Weir.”

While the river boats have made a steady changeover to tour boats over the years, you’ll still find important fish farms in the river along with a vital gate that controls the flow of traffic to the sea and the historic Kauno Ruins, which lies along the river.

This town may be quiet, but there are plenty of things to do in Dalyan to keep any visitor busy. And the relaxed pace of life means that all of these amazing Dalyan activities can be experienced in a leisurely stride.

Top Things To Do In Dalyan, Turkiye

There are a range of incredible things to do in Dalyan, from the great food scene to the beautiful waterways. If you’ve got a few days or more to spend in the town, here are my top recommendations for activities in the area.

Lycian Rock Tombs

Lycian tombs in Dalyan lit up at night

Stroll down to the waterfront in Dalyan, and you won’t be able to miss the town’s most prominent feature. Carved into the cliffs opposite the town of Dalyan around 400 BCE, the Dalyan Rock Tombs are visible from most waterfront restaurants and hotels in town.

These stunningly preserved tombs were used to bury the Lycian rulers. You can take a boat across the river for a few Lira to walk to the tombs. While you may see photos of people climbing through them, public access is no longer granted, and the tombs are for looking only. No climbing allowed.

Iztuzu Beach

A family smiles for a selfie at Izutzu Beach near Dalyan

Considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Turkiye, Iztuzu Beach is one of the most popular attractions in Dalyan. This beach, which is a popular nesting ground for Loggerhead Turtles, is located along the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.

The most scenic section of this long stretch of sand is only accessible by boat. Tours and boat taxis typically leave the Dalyan waterfront, making their way down towards the sea. Iztuzu Beach is a protected area. However, many boat operators are known for feeding and interacting with the Loggerhead Turtles.

This type of behavior is dangerous for the animals and an unethical environmental practice. Look for boats that display the “Kaptan June Turtle Conservancy” sticker. These are companies that adhere to a higher standard of environmental action.

You can read all about Iztuzu Beach here .

Kaunos Ruins

A boy looks out over the Grand Theater at the Kaunos ruins in Dalyan

Sitting quietly along the edge of the Dalyan River, the ancient city of Kaunos is one of the top places to visit in Dalyan. As an example of how few tourists travel to the region, when my family was exploring Kaunos, there were, at most, ten people there.

This beautiful ruin is unlike many of the other ancient cities in Turkiye. Ruins such as Harran, Heirapolis , and Ephesus are heavily funded and, at times, hermetically sealed from outside forces. Kaunos still has its grass cared for by goats, and you’re more likely to find a small herd of donkeys strolling through the ruins than you are another human.k

Kaunos sits on the riverfront and extends up a dramatic hill. The acropolis, or “upper city,” was the religious and administrative area of the city, while the harbor, or “lower city,” was the commercial center.

Kaunos is believed to have been established back in the 10th century BCE by the Carian people as a trading hub. It rose to prominence by the 6th century BCE as one of the region’s most important trading centers. That same century, it fell into Persian rule. The city thrived until the mid-7th century AD when attacks by Arabs and pirates led to the city being abandoned.

Kaunos is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most popular things to do in Dalyan, Turkiye. This river cruise will take you through the Dalyan fish farms to the Kaunos ruins and back.

Cruise The Dalyan River

A boy giving an epic pose while cruising down the Dalyan River

The Dalyan River is the most notable natural feature in the town of Dalyan. This quiet waterway is the lifeblood of the region and has been its centerpiece for thousands of years.

Head to the waterfront, and you’ll find loads of boats offering tours of the Dalyan River. Some will take you across the river to visit the Lycian tombs, others will go as far as Kaunos, and still more will take you as far down as Iztuzu Beach for a fun day in the sun.

Some of the boats can be quite packed, while others can be rented privately. You’ll get great views of the river, the fish farms, and the stunning mountain scenery.

This tour takes you on a river cruise to the thermal mud baths, a popular wellness spot. This one also includes the mud baths but also lets you enjoy some time at Iztuzu Beach.

Thermal Mud Baths

Dalyan is a geothermal hotspot. Because of its unique positioning and the mineral-rich landscape, the area is home to several natural thermal mud baths. These mineral-rich mud baths have made Dalayan a popular wellness escape where visitors can coat themselves in healing mud and rinse off in the nearby hot springs.

We had our first family mud bath in Jordan when we bathed in the Dead Sea, and mud baths have been something we love to do at every opportunity. There are several spas set up along the riverfront, such as the PELOid Hamam , where you can combine your mud bath experience with a proper Turkish hammam and other relaxing treatments.

You can also combine a Dalyan mud bath with a river cruise from the city center as well.

Visit The Kaptan June Turtle Conservancy

A boy smiles next to a green container holding a Loggerhead Turtle at the Kaptan June Turtle Conservancy

On the eastern section of Iztuzu Beach lies one of the most important conservation centers near Dalyan. Kaptan June’s Turtle Conservancy launched in the mid-1980s when a large hotel was planned for Iztuzu Beach. This hotel would have threatened the already endangered Loggerhead Turtles that nested here.

Conservationist June Haimoff , who lived along Iztuzu Beach, fought back against the large corporations. With the help of several environmentalist partners and with the support of notable celebrities, including Prince Philip of the United Kingdom and Turkish President Turgut Özal, June was able to stop the development and put measures in place that would protect the beach and its wildlife.

Known affectionately as “Kaptan June,” Haimoff passed away in 2022. You can visit her legacy, the Kaptan June Turtle Conservancy on Iztuzu Beach. This area is accessible by car from Dalyan. You’ll find rescued Loggerhead Turtles that are being rehabilitated with the hopes of being released back into the wild.

Popular Dalyan Tours

If you’re looking for more things to do in Dalyan, Turkiye, there are some popular tours in the town that will give you a broader taste of this beautiful region.

  • If you’re looking to visit Dalyan as a day trip from Fethiye, this tour includes transport to and from Dalyan as well as a river cruise, mud baths, and a stop at Iztuzu turtle beach.
  • Taking off from the nearby town of Saligerme, this backroads jeep tour takes you through the mountains and dusty back roads to get a behind-the-scenes look at this beautiful region. You’ll visit a small Turkish town, enjoy lunch at a traditional trout restaurant, and enjoy a swim in Yuvarlakcay Spring.
  • This Dalyan River Tour takes you through the fish farms to the ancient city of Kaunos, where you’ll have the chance to walk through the historic ruins and explore the grand theater.

Where To Stay in Dalyan

A small hotel at night lit by a large pool at the Arp Dalyan Hotel

Dalyan might be a small town, but there are some excellent places to stay. You won’t find many large chain hotels in Dalyan, but you’ll find plenty of smaller, accessible apartment hotels and boutique hotels that are perfect for couples or families.

We stayed at Arp Dalyan , a lovely hotel on the edge of the Dalyan River with phenomenal views of the Lycian Rock Tombs. They have one large family suite available for those staying at least two nights. The rooms are spacious, and they have an excellent Turkish breakfast included. Try to enjoy it on the riverside deck, and you may get a visit from some local turtles.

Other great Dalyan hotels to consider include:

Midas Pension Hotel

Another popular riverside hotel in Dalyan is the Midas Pension. This popular hotel has great rooms, friendly staff, and beautiful mountain views that are worth spending an extra couple of dollars on. The hotel is just a ten-minute walk from the center of town.

DNA Hotel Dalyan

Just a five-minute walk from central Dalyan, DNA Hotel is one of the best places to stay in the city. You’ll find a wonderful swimming pool, an excellent Turkish breakfast, a beautiful garden and terrace, and easy access to all of the best things to do in Dalyan.

Where To Eat In Dalyan

A dish of sea bream with tomato, lettuce, onion, and citrus at a restaurant in Dalyan

The food in Dalyan is fantastic. And with the Mediterranean Coast just a few miles away and the Dalyan River running right along the edge of town, it’s no surprise that fish and mussels are some of the most popular menu items. But you’ll find a range of traditional Turkish and international cuisine in Dalyan that will fit most culinary leanings.

Caretta Caretta

Meze is one of the most popular dining traditions in Turkiye. Tables piled high with small plates of dolma, fava, olives, roasted eggplant, and hummus mark one of the most delightful traditional Turkish dinner experiences. If you’re looking for the best meze in Dalyan, stop at Caretta Caretta .

This Dalyan restaurant has a nice patio overlooking the Lycian Tombs. If you’re here in the evenings, the tombs are lit up as well, so you won’t lose the view.

Yaliçapkini

When it comes to seafood in Dalyan, Yalicapkini is the place to go. This quiet restaurant serves up fresh calamari, local sea bream, pomegranate-infused salads, and a range of delightful Turkish dishes that might have you reserving more than just one meal here.

Pide, that delicious Turkish pizza, is one of my favorite comfort foods in the country. Cagri Pide , which is relatively new to Dalyan, quickly established itself as one of the most popular restaurants in town. Here, you’ll find homemade comfort food such as pide, doner kebab, and souvlaki done right.

How to Get to Dalyan

Monument to Katpan June on the Dalyan riverfront

Dalyan is a popular road trip destination. With easy access to popular cities such as Fethiye , Pamukkale , and Marmaris, travel to Dalyan is usually done by road.

The closest major airport to Dalyan is the Dalaman Airport. The Dalaman Airport is about 25 minutes away from Dalyan by car. There are taxis, car rentals, and shuttle buses that can transfer travelers between the two cities.

If you’re traveling from major cities such as Istanbul , Izmir, Ankara, or Antalya, Dalyan lies on major bus routes. You can find schedules and book tickets online or at the bus station.

If you’re traveling by road, as we did, you can take the D400 Highway.

How To Get Around In Dalyan

Dalyan is a small town, and it’s very easy to get around without much effort. Walking through town is my favorite way to enjoy the area. Stroll the riverside walk, stopping at the food and craft vendors along the way, and see if you can strike a deal with one of the riverboat captains.

If walking isn’t your scene, there are dolmas or minibusses that can take you to most of the hotels and restaurants in town.

One of the best ways to get around Dalyan is by bicycle. There are bikes for rent at several places in town and wide bike paths that make getting around Dalyan a breeze.

History of Dalyan, Turkey

This town, situated alongside the Dalyan River (originally the Calbys River), features attractions like ancient Lycian Rock tombs and the picturesque Iztuzu Beach (home to the local Caretta Caretta turtles). As this town is a preserved area, there are restrictions on the construction of homes, allowing the town to keep a traditional Turkey feel.

One of the most famous attractions is Kaunos, originally known as Kaunos City; it was an important port town in ancient times. Kaunos is a few meters away from the modern town of Dalyan. This town is shrouded in legends, with stories that note Kaunos (grandson of Apollo) as the builder of the town. This town began as a separate state, though it eventually shifted to being part of Lycia.

Dalyan is considered a tourism spot with its location making it easy to access nearby attractions like the ancient city of Kaunos and the tombs that overlook the town.

Map of Dalyan, Turkey

There are multiple ways to reach Dalyan, some more simple than others. This destination is about an hour from Fethiye and Marmaris, making it easy to reach if you have rented a car. However, if you don’t have a rental car at your disposal, you can also use the below methods to reach this town.

Fly into Dalaman Airport

Dalaman Airport is about 16 miles southwest of Dalyan, offering local and international flights to and from the area. If you’re traveling from outside of the country, you’ll need to fly into Dalaman Airport when traveling to Dalyan. From the airport, you can rent a car, take a private transfer or take a bus from the Dalaman Airport to Dalyan, Turkey.

You can rent a car at the Dalaman Airport and it is about a 35-minute drive to Dalyan. Once you arrive in Dalyan, it is walkable so plan on your parking your car at your hotel and set off on foot.

Private Transfer

Instead of using the airport coach, opt for a private shuttle service to avoid additional stops and delays due to changing buses. This is the quickest and most direct method to reach Dalyan. Pricing is similar to what you would spend on a taxi, and most shuttle services can hold up to three people. Keep in mind that you’ll need to schedule the private shuttle beforehand.

There are no direct bus routes from Dalaman Airport to Dalyan. However, you can ride on a local bus until you reach Ortaca, about five miles from Dalyan. From there, grab a taxi to get you to your final destination.

Best Things to Do in Dalyan

Dalyan, Turkey is ideal for any vacation, from a relaxing trip involving a soak in the local hot springs to a history-focused vacation with a visit to the ancient ruins. The below activities and attractions will ensure that your trip to Dalyan fits your interests and includes exciting things to add to your itinerary.

1. Riverside Restaurants and Cafes

With its location alongside the river, Dalyan provides ample opportunities for riverside dining in the form of restaurants and cafes. Most of the eateries alongside the river include outdoor seating options, providing pretty views to enjoy while consuming your meal.

Most restaurants along the river are local spots without websites, so it’s best to call ahead for reservations or stop by the location while exploring Dalyan for a bite. Some top options include The River Terrace and River House Restaurant, which both feature traditional Turkish food options.

2. Riverboat Cruise

Many riverboat cruises are available, which leave from Dalyan. We were surprised at how many many boats we saw as we walked to town. You can hire a private boat or take group boat with 20-30 other people. You’ll go cruise the river past Dalyan, through the canals, and over to Iztuzu Beach for some time at the sea. Afterward, you can go to the Dalyan Mudbath & Hot Springs.

Some cruise boats will go out onto the Mediterranean where you can visit swimming coves, islands, and caves.  These cruises offer various activities, including swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing on private beaches, and other options for enjoying the beautiful nature views that Dalyan offers.

These cruises are excellent for all travelers, from friend groups to families, solo travelers, and more. Each available cruise features different activities, so it’s easy to cater this activity to the needs and interests of your group. You can easily walk up to the boats in Dalyan to book your spot on a boat or negotiate a private boat tour .

3. Iztuzu Beach

Iztuzu Beach is one of the most beautiful in Turke y , offering views of incredibly blue waters and the option to sunbathe on the pristine sandy shoreline. This beach is a protected area from May to October annually when the Loggerhead Turtles lay their eggs.

While protected, you can still visit the beach as long as you’re careful of the turtle nests and the hatching turtles shifting toward the water. This beach is a family-friendly attraction, with snack and ice cream kiosks at each end of the beach. The water can sometimes be choppy, though the shallow areas create kid-friendly swimming spots.

As a note, there are no shaded spots on the beach, so renting an umbrella is the best option for a full day of fun under the sun. Or, you can select a sunbed, though there is just a handful available.

4. Dalyan Rock Tombs & Kaunos

The ancient world of Kaunos and the Dalyan Rock Tombs are undoubtedly, one of the top attractions in Dalyan. They’re also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kaunos holds many important archeological sites to explore, including an amphitheater, acropolis, basilica, temples, churches, and Roman baths.

Kaunos is accessible via a car ferry ride, rowboat, or drive from Dalyan, Turkey. Once you’ve explored the ruins, you can head to the Rock Tombs carved into the cliffs. These tombs are said to hold the most important members of the Lycian society. The Tombs of the Kings feature stunning Greek-style pillars and depictions of gods.

The whole area is walkable, allowing you to explore as many historical sites as you want.

5. Dalyan Mudbath and Hot Springs

Another top attraction in Dalyan is the collection of mudbaths and hot springs in the area. These natural spa sites provide a relaxing activity for travelers and locals. The mudbaths are believed to offer healing properties such as helping with rheumatism, sciatica, and wrinkles. You’ll find similar qualities in the Pamukkale hot springs.

There is a specific process for enjoying the mudbaths, which includes smearing the mud on your whole body and letting it dry for about 20 minutes before stepping into the sulfur bath to rinse off. Afterward, you can spend time in the hot springs. At the time, it cost us about 100 TL each to enter. We spent about 2 hours here, playing around, laughing at each other covered in mud, and then had Turkish tea before heading back to Dalyan via boat.

You can reach the mudbaths and hot springs via a boat ride, as they’re located on the Lake Koycegiz side. It’s said that these mudbaths are so well-known that Cleopatra used to travel to take a soak in them. Now, this location continues to be frequented by various celebrities.

6. Shopping at Dalyan Market

Shopping at local markets is an excellent way to learn more about the local culture and allows one to mingle with locals. There is a weekly market in Dalyan, which occurs each Saturday. You’ll find everything from locally sourced honey to produce, spices, meat, handicrafts, clothing, and more.

The Dalyan Market is ideal if you’re looking for a spot to purchase souvenirs. You can also find prepared food at the market, like Gözleme. This prepared food is a traditional Turkish dish, a flatbread stuffed with various savory fillings such as cheese, potatoes, minced meat, and spinach. It’s a simple yet flavorful and filling dish beloved by locals.

Dalyan, Turkey: Essential Guide & Best Things to do

Located on the southwest coast of Turkey is the picture-perfect town of Dalyan. Dalyan, Turkey is unique in that it is surrounded by an environmentally protected area.

It is an example of Mother Nature’s finest qualities with its meandering river, golden beaches, lovely lakes and of course its towering mountains.

Among the natural beauty, you will also be dazzled by its rich history and abundant wildlife. Once an old fishing village (the name Dalyan translates to ‘fish trap’) this piece of paradise is a place where visitors come to take in nature’s finest.

This is Dalyan in a nutshell but read on for a more detailed guide to this amazing piece of the planet.

6 Things to Do in Dalyan, Turkey

loggerhead turtle

1. Iztuzu Beach

One of the most beautiful beaches in all of Turkey is Iztuzu Beach, which is also known as Turtle Beach. It is unique in that is stretches out like a long peninsula, with a freshwater delta from the Dalyan River on one side and saltwater from the Mediterranean on the other.

To make it even more picturesque, this piece of paradise is surrounded by stunning pine-covered mountains. There are beach facilities with toilets, cafes, and sunbeds but if you walk far enough down the stretch of beach you will most definitely find a sandy patch to call your own.

This two and a half-mile stretch of sandy beach is not only a place for sun worshipers but is also the nesting grounds of the endangered Caretta Caretta sea turtles. The Caretta Caretta (also known as Loggerhead Turtle) is one of the oldest surviving species in the world.

These turtles can measure up to 4 feet in length and come to Iztuzu Beach to nest from May to September every year. The greatest threat to the turtles is right on the beach. Back in the 80’s hotel developers tried to build on the land to cash in on Dalyan’s growing tourism industry.

The local community banded together and since 1988 this beach has been deemed protected status and is part of the Koycegiz-Dalyan Special Environmental Protection Area. As part of the conservation efforts, the beach is heavily monitored and is closed to the public from 8 pm to 8 am each night.

At the southern end of Iztuzu Beach is the Sea Turtle Research Rescue Rehabilitation and Information Center. The center has saved countless Caretta Caretta and Green Turtles and at any given time, you will be able to see some being treated for injuries from propellers, fishing hooks, and nets.

Conservation efforts were spearheaded by British born June Haimoff. She has fought tirelessly against the corporate takeover and although she is now in her 90’s she is still fighting to make the beach a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If you decide to take a boat tour make sure that the boat promotes the Kaptan June Foundation, as these boats are fitted with propeller guards that protect the turtles.

Iztuzu Beach is about 7 miles from Dalyan, Turkey and there are two ways to get there – by road or by water. The local dolmus (minibus) does regular trips from Dalyan across the mountain dropping you off near Kaptan June’s Rehabilitation Center on the south side of the beach.

Getting to the beach by water is the more popular route as water taxis leave the town center and takes you through the delta with amazing views of the Lycian tombs. There you will be dropped off at the north end of the beach.

Spend a day exploring the natural wonders and historic gems of the Dalyan Delta on this action-packed full-day cruise . Set sail for the beaches and bays of the Adaköy peninsula, where you can cool off with a dip in the Mediterranean before cruising on to the Dalyan River. Spot loggerhead turtles at İztuzu Beach, soak in the mineral-rich mud baths and view the Lycian Kings’ Tombs in Kaunos.

Dalyan Rock Tombs

2. Dalyan Rock Tombs

One of Dalyan’s most prominent features is its ancient Lycian Rock Tombs that watch over the town. They are visible from the waterfront so taking a water taxi will give you the best views of these incredible pieces of history.

The Lycians believed that if they placed the king’s tombs on the highest peak they would be closer to God and the souls would be transported from the tombs to the afterlife quicker. This group of six tombs date back to the 4th century BC.

The largest tomb was not completed due to the invasion of Alexander the Great. They are certainly jaw-dropping with their intricate chambers and their towering columns.

If you are lucky enough to view them at sunset you will have the opportunity to capture photos with the glow of the sun gleaming off the rock and if you come at night you will be able to see them lit up, giving them a majestic presence over the town.

Ancient City of Kaunos near Dalyan Turkey

3. Visit the Ancient City of Kaunos

The Ancient City of Kaunos was founded by Caunos in the 10th century BC and was once one of the most important port cities of the commercial region in the Ancient Age.

The original town actually lies beneath the water as it was destroyed by an earthquake many years ago. Due to safety risks diving isn’t permitted among the ruins but if you ask your water taxi to wander in the direction of the ruins you will be able to see glimpses peering through the clear blue waters.

The Ancient City that you still can visit is about a 20-minute walk along the riverside from the Lycian Tombs.

The city was constructed on terraces that sprawl down Dalyan’s hills. On one side sits religious structures like Baselius Kaunios Temple, Apollon Sanctuary and Demeter Sacred Rocks. On the other side is the larger terrace and was called the Upper City.

Here there were several important structures but the most prominent today is the Roman Bathhouse and the impressive theater. The theater is so well preserved that local concerts are still held at this incredible site.

What eventually brought this ancient city to its demise was an epidemic of malaria in 15th century AD. It completely wiped out the population and Kaunos was then abandoned.

Kaunos was founded by a British archaeologist in 1842. Excavations in the city began in 1966 where numerous sculptures, coins and ornaments have been excavated.

Heather Halpern at the Dalyan Mud Baths

4. Mud Baths

One of the other reasons that make Dalyan, Turkey so special is that it is the home to thermal springs and mud baths. Popular since the Roman era when the springs were used as a spa, it is even said that Cleopatra once visited the mud baths of Dalyan.

Located on Koycegiz Lake, the mud baths are just a short boat ride from the center of town. The hot springs can reach temperatures of 104 degrees Fahrenheit and are rich in iron, calcium, potassium, sulfur and several other minerals.

It is said that the hot springs and mud baths have numerous health benefits, from arthritis to wrinkles.

Entrance into the facilities costs 6 TL which is about $1 US. There are a series of stations you go through as you work your way through the spa. The first pool is full of sulfur so it smells a little bit like rotten eggs.

Here you are able to reach the bottom and remove clumps of mud. You are supposed to lather the mud all over your body so that the minerals in the mud can have a positive effect. Once you are covered in the grey clay-like mud you are to then sit in the sun so that the mud can dry.

It feels like the mud is stretching your skin and perhaps this is where the idea of removing wrinkles comes in to play. Once you are ready to escape the heat you are then to head to the showers and wash the mud off of your body.

Once you are clean you are then supposed to go to the thermal pools and relax in the soothing hot waters.

I must admit that I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the mud baths. It was a unique experience and I felt just as relaxed as having been to a modern-day spa.

Spend a day cruising Turkey’s famous Turquoise Coast on this full-day boat trip, including hotel transfers and lunch . Take in the highlights of the Dalyan canal and enjoy a dip in the mineral-rich mud baths. Then take in the view of the protected Iztuzu Beach, famous for its large population of loggerhead turtles.

The region around Dalyan has no shortage of amazing hiking trails which are said to have the most incredible views over the Dalyan vista. In recent years Dalyan has become home to one of the best hiking trails in the world called the Dalyan Eco-Trail.

The Eco-Trail initiative was spearheaded by local resident Murat Demirci. He wanted to increase hiking and cycling tourism in the region while preserving the area’s natural beauty.

As this region is Turkey’s first official special protection area, these hiking routes take advantage of the relatively untouched nature.

Routes have all been clearly marked and at certain points, along the trails, they offer a choice of taking an easier or more difficult route. All routes are available to download on the ECO Trails website.

A few of the more popular routes are:

  • The Dalyan Radar Hill Walk: This walking route starts from Iztuzu Beach Road and ends approximately 5 and a half miles away at Radar Hill.
  • The Dalyan, Cadir Village, and Ekincik Cove Walk: This walk starts when you cross the Dalyan River with a small boat. It brings both nature and history together offering you amazing views.
  • Koycegiz’s Plateau: This hike is more strenuous where you can beat the summer heat by climbing up in the mountains and through the plateaus. The Sandras reach a height of 7500 feet.

River Boat trip in Dalyan

6. Take a Boat Trip

One of the most popular things to do in Dalyan, Turkey is to take a boat trip. In doing this you can visit places like Iztuzo beach, the ruins of Caunos or just spend an hour or two cruising the river to Ekincik Bay.

The boats line up along the river in large numbers at the beginning of each day, so flagging one down is an easy task. Be sure to haggle when you ask around for prices and be sure to clarify what it is you are paying for. Settle on your stops and length of time to ensure there is no confusion on either end. Then enjoy!

Want to spend a day exploring the natural wonders and historic gems of the Dalyan Delta? Book this action-packed full-day cruise from Marmaris . Set sail for the beaches and bays of the Adaköy peninsula, where you can cool off with a dip in the Mediterranean before cruising on to the Dalyan River. Spot loggerhead turtles at İztuzu Beach, soak in the mineral-rich mud baths and view the Lycian Kings’ Tombs in Kaunos, then tuck into a delicious lunch (included) on-board.

As you can see there is so much to do in this relatively unheard of destination. Dalyan truly encompasses a taste of Turkey’s undeniable history , beauty, and wildlife. It is a spot that I highly recommend visiting when traveling around this incredible country.

How to Get to Dalyan, Turkey

The nearest airport is Dalaman Airport (DLM) and is about 40 minutes away from Dalyan. Istanbul is approximately 460 miles away, which is about a 2 and a half hour flight. Izmir is much closer at 184 miles.

There are several domestic flights daily so finding a cheap flight can be fairly easy. From the airport, you can catch a taxi which costs approximately 100 TL or $17 USD. The cheaper option would be to catch a bus that leaves from the domestic terminal and only costs 17 TL.

The bus won’t take you directly into Dalyan however but instead will drop you off in Ortaca. From there you can catch a dolmus (minibus) into town for a minimal amount.

Taking an overnight bus is another option and a little more economical. There are buses that run across the entire country and since I have taken one myself, I can safely say that it was comfortable and clean. To get the best fare and most up to date schedule try using Busbud .

Getting around Dalyan is relatively easy because the town itself is pretty small. There is no official public transportation but minibusses (dolmus) are available and cost about 12 TL for a ride to the beach.

With Dalyan being in the center of numerous waterways, water taxis are also available for hire and usually cost 15 TL from the town to the beach. Standard taxis usually charge around the same within the town.

Where to Stay in Dalyan

The most popular place to stay in Dalyan, Turkey is the Holiday Calbis Hotel . With 896 reviews and a 10/10 rating, I don’t think you can go wrong with this place. It has a pool, sun deck, free wifi and is close to all of Dalyan’s best attractions.

For something that is a bit more upscale, the BC Spa Hotel is a 4-star property with a 7.9/10 rating. It features a pool, onsite restaurant, bar, full Turkish spa, fitness center and free wifi.

Ultimate Guide to Visiting Dalyan – Turkish Venice on the Mediterranean Sea

One of the most beautiful towns in Mugla province of Turkey is the hidden gem known as Dalyan. It is located between Marmaris and Fethiye, but unfortunately, or fortunately, due to the popularity of these two cities, Dalyan has been a wonderful hideaway for those who know about it. Which makes it a great place to visit on your next trip to Turkey’s Turquoise Coast.

Just 40 minutes away from the center of Dalyan is Dalaman airport. Proximity to it makes a trip here not expensive and doesn’t take a lot of time. But you can always add Dalyan to this seaside 7 days Turkey itinerary  when traveling from Bodrum to Antalya and see everything in one trip.

Dalyan is very special in terms of geography and its lagoon system is a natural wonder that everyone should see. It consists of lakes and canals decorated with reeds and has a habitat that is as beautiful as it is amazingly biodiverse. The ancient city of Kaunos rising from the delta, the king tombs on the slopes, and Caretta turtles spawning on Iztuzu Beach make Dalyan an even more special place.

When you arrive, there are plenty of options for commuting to town such as renting a car, taxi service, or taking a bus that runs every 15-30 minutes from Dalaman airport to Dalyan. I talk about all of it below as well as cover the best things to do in Dalyan, its rock tombs, boat tours, resorts, and give travel tips that help to plan your Dalyan holidays.

Why You Shouldn’t Miss Dalyan on a Trip to South-Western Turkey

Dalyan weekend break

From natural wonders, historical sites, and a local atmosphere with delicious food, Dalyan offers tons of things to see, do and experience. Being a small, sleepy town nestled on the banks of the Dalyan River, in the heart of a protected natural and historical reserve, it is one of the most atmospheric places on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey.

In just one day you can see rare turtles, visit healing hot springs , admire ancient tombs on sheer cliffs and go boating around the numerous straits and canals that gave Dalyan another name “Turkish Venice”.

In fact, the local population moves around Dalyan mostly by boats rather than on foot. For tourists, this type of transportation is as popular as ferries in Istanbul or boats in Bodrum , so you shouldn’t miss using it too.

One of the most famous things Dalyan is famous for is a beach with a hilly area and rugged vegetation inhabited by huge sea turtles, listed on the IUCN Red List that lay their eggs here every year. Seeing these turtles is once in a lifetime experience.

Dalyan hot springs are known far outside Turkey and give a separate reason why to visit the town. The water in local springs contains radon, sulfide, and calcium chloride which serve as a great source for people with disorders of the musculoskeletal system and skin diseases.

With a well-developed infrastructure for a comfortable pastime for tourists and unique places to visit, Dalyan should be on the list for everyone who tours Western Turkey.

Things to Know Before Visiting Dalyan

The city of Dalyan is located in the delta of the river of the same name between the picturesque resort of Marmaris and the fashionable Fethiye but at the same time not far from the cities of Bodrum and Kemer.

With its great location, Dalyan is a must-visit spot on a day trip from Fethiye or Marmaris which many people choose to check out. Although coming to the area on your own and staying in one of the apartments or hotels for a day or two is a much more interesting experience. Also, I highly recommend you make a stop here on a road trip to Pamukkale or when road tripping along the Turquoise coast.

And when you do, remember these tips to make the most of your trip:

How Much Time to Spend in Dalyan, Turkey

boat trip on Dalyan river

Dalyan is small but it is vast and places of interest are scattered out a bit on different sides. Ideally, you’d want to spend 2, possibly 3 days there if you appreciate deeper exploration and want to see some gems of the region, including a hike to local hills for incredible views of the Dalyan Delta.

However, if short on time, even the most important things fit into one day if you start a day very early and end it late.

1 Day is enough to tick all main touristy attractions off the list when you can see both the delta and Iztuzu Beach by taking a boat tour and trying a blue crab in the evening in one of the restaurants. If you make arrangements with the captain, he can even take you to the ancient city of Kaunos and the mud bath.

If you decide to extend, 2 or 3 days of time are great to fit in more activities, do some kayaking, climb local hills for views, spend some time in mud baths, visit a nearby Turkish village, sip some beer at sunset over the delta, and eat dinner under eucalyptus trees that are common to this area.

Is Renting a Car in Dalyan Necessary?

Even though the town of Dalyan is small and very walkable, there are a few places within driving distance that are better reached by having a means of transportation. If you’re only going to stay in the center, you don’t need to rent a car because there are minibusses and boats to the most touristic places such as Kaunos Ancient City and Iztuzu Beach.

Otherwise, you do need to have a vehicle or use a taxi to move around, so renting a car is your best bet, considering the fact that car rentals in Dalyan and Dalaman areas are quite affordable.

If you want to have a sense of adventure and drive to the most beautiful hilltops for incredible views such as Radar Tepesi and Çandır Tepesi, I recommend you rent a 4WD as the roads to them are difficult.

To hire a car in Dalyan, I advise you compare current deals between  DiscoverCars and LocalRent .

I use both these companies to rent cars in Turkey, although if renting in Dalyan/Dalaman area, the first company in my experience works much better as it also offers excellent insurance packages. LocalRent is great for car hire directly in Dalyan city and if you plan to drop it off in another location.

But I also suggest you read my post about renting a car and driving in Turkey to understand which rental company works best for you personally.

camping in Turkey

Rent a Bike if You Don’t Have a Car (or Travel on a Tight Budget)

If you are visiting Dalyan not on a day tour from another city but on your own on an independent trip and you are on a very tight budget, do not hesitate to rent a bike and cycle around.

I’d say even if you plan to rent a car, still rent a bike for a few hours as having it offers a very different sense of adventure. Plus, bikes are very affordable and can be parked anywhere.

I recommend that you check Tusco Quadbike and Bike rentals , located at this address . It is a bit outside the main area of the town, yet very close and prices with service are wonderful.

Come in Spring or Autumn for the Best Experience

One of the best tips to know before coming to Dalyan is that spring and fall are the best times to visit, as the temperatures are very warm, and you can still do all the summer activities without the extra flux of people that visit the town in the summer months.

In the early spring , you can witness how everything blooms and nature awakens. In the late fall, there is even a bit of foliage on the hills.

Although Winter is Also a Good Time to Visit

Dalyan river

Dalyan in Turkey has a comfortable climate at any time of the year. In winter the temperature there rarely drops below 12C degrees, and in summer it rarely rises above +29C. At the same time, coolness always blows from the river. Although I am convinced that spring and autumn are the best seasons for a trip, winter in Dalyan is quite favorable too.

On winter days , the temperature almost never drops below +12C degrees. It creates perfect conditions for relaxation in Dalyan mud baths and exploring the town in comfort.

The rather mild climate also favors the growth of vigorous vegetation. For example, in the vicinity of Dalyan, there are about 100 species of palm trees and an amber tree, which is quite rare in nature and it starts blooming in late winter.

Do Not Confuse the Turtles Swimming in the Canals with Caretta Turtles

You may see turtles swimming in Dalyan canals. Do not confuse them with Caretta because that’s a different type. Those turtles are a freshwater species called the Nile Tortoise.

They usually come in front of Dalko fish restaurant every morning around 8 am because they are used to being fed there. But you can see them swimming in other canals too.

It is a good idea to start the day with the feeling of freshness and greetings from turtles, so walk in that area around Dalko early in the morning for this unique experience. With the beautiful morning light, you can also take nice photos.

10 Best Things to Do in Dalyan, Turkey

Go on a boat tour.

Why I put an exclamation point by the word ‘tour’ because this activity is really one of the most exciting things to do in Dalyan. Part of the Dalyan delta is a very lively place with bars, restaurants, and houses that take up space along the canal. Seeing them from the water as well as cruising through the labyrinths is an incredible experience.

You can hire a private boat to move as you want or join a daily tour.

To find a boat tour in Dalyan, go to the middle of the town. You will find all the boats along the Dalyan River. You can go and talk to a few of the captains and negotiate a price to get the best deal. They offer plenty of options such as all-day tours, that can be personalized and private, or open to the public.

boat tour in Dalyan

The all-day tour is the one with the most stops and usually lasts between 8-10 hours. This one goes up to the Sultaniye Thermals and Mud Baths in the Köyceğiz Lake, down to overlook the Dalyan tombs (Kaunos), and last the unforgettable turtle beach called Iztuzu Beach. You can enjoy the beach or visit the turtle center that Captain June (recently deceased) opened to protect these endangered species.

The boat may also stop at Candir, which is where the Romans and Greeks used to place the urns with the ashes of their deceased. It’s a few kilometers from Kaunos City since they believe the dead should be far away from their living areas.

When choosing a boat tour, we always go with Captain Gokhan. He is our go-to guy, and he even allows pets if you want to take your fur babies for a ride. On his Instagram , you can see some of the tours he does and contact him for your visit.

Take a Journey to the Past in the Ancient city of Kaunos

Kaunos was a city of ancient Caria in Anatolia, a few kilometers west of Dalyan. The ancient city used to be a very important seaport, but due to the area being dried out, the beach is now 8 km away from what was once a big trade post.

According to mythology, King Kaunos (founder of the city of Kaunos) was the grandson of Apollo. He had a twin sister who was insanely in love with him romantically. When he found out about this after reading a letter she wrote for him, he fled, and it is said that the Dalyan river emerged from the sisters’ tears before going completely crazy.

This river separated the Lycians and Carians from the Kaunos people. Herodotus wrote in his book histories that there were differences between all three groups such as the Kaunos men, women, and children would drink wine while socializing.

Kaunos ancient city

Kaunos had many invasions and therefore influences, from Greeks, Persians, Romans (part of Alexander the Great empire), the Byzantine empire, Muslim Arabs and more. But it was in the 15th century when the Turks took over Kaunos and a malaria epidemic made many of them flee the city. Later, an earthquake devasted the city and over the years it got covered by vegetation and sand.

Kaunos became the lost city, and it wasn’t until the 19th century when the archeologist Hoskyn found a law tablet and brought attention back to the area.

All this history makes the Kaunos Ancient city a must-visit.

The best part? Due to the lack of attention from tourism, you can visit these ruins and be alone in a civilization that has been there since the 9th century BC. You will see an amphitheater that now has olive trees, roman baths, the entire ancient city structure, and wild donkeys wandering around.

You can get there from Dalyan , by walking to the ferry port and hopping on the ferry either with your vehicle or on foot. Let it take you across the river and walk/drive up as the road signs indicate. Within a few minutes, you will find yourself at the door of these incredible historical sites.

At the entrance, you have the ticket office and a small coffee place where you can get water, cay, and snacks. The entrance fee is currently 14 TL and free if you have a museum card pass.

Spend Time on the Famous Iztuzu Beach

Let me tell you the bad news before you head to the 5400-meter-long Iztuzu Beach. The sea there is actually wildly choppy with heavy winds. So you won’t be able to enjoy the beach in terms of swimming or sunbathing. But the good news – you don’t really come there for it anyways.

Fortunately, there are still sheltered sections at both ends where it is possible to have a little fun and relax but the main reason you visit Iztuzu beach is different.

This beach, a long sandy stretch of land, is one of the most important areas for the future of loggerhead turtles, locally known as Caretta. Being such a vital natural spot, it is important to follow the time restrictions for visitors as the turtles are nesting, being born and making their way to the beach from May to September from 8 pm-8 am.

Caretta turtle

You should go and enjoy this beautiful paradise, and while you are there don’t miss the place where Captain June lived and where she created the  Turtle hospital .

Captain June was an English woman who came to Turkey on a trip but then after seeing endangered species of turtles in Dalyan, she opened a Turtle Center with a goal to protect them. She died recently but Dalyan and Captain June go hand and hand together. Turkish people adored her and many Brits now visit this area because of her.

Whenever you are in the area, pay it a visit too where you can see Caretta turtles close. The location of the Turtle hospital is here next to Captain June’s hut mentioned above. Entrance to the hospital is free but donations are appreciated.

Iztuzu beach is actually considered one of the top 10 best beaches in Europe . And even though you can’t swim there, it is a unique place where one side opens to the salty sea and the other side opens to fresh water, blending two ecosystems, which is perfect for Caretta mothers to lay their eggs.

Drink Turkish Tea or Beer Opposite Kaunos King Tombs

Two symbols that identify Dalyan are the Caretta turtles and mysterious Kaunos Rock Tombs. If you can see the first one on Iztuzu Beach, Kaunos Rock Tombs are clearly visible from many parts of Dalyan, including the town center, although at a distance.

I visited different rock tombs in many ancient civilizations in Turkey, including Myra Necropolis in Demre and Lycian Rock Thombs in Fethiye. There was a belief that the higher the tombs, the closer they were to God. That’s why we find the graves of important people on the rocks as high as possible.

A feature that distinguishes the Kaunos Rock Tombs from the others is that they have facade architectures reminiscent of Hellenistic temples. And seeing them is fascinating from any angle, including the one in the center of Dalyan.

For a unique place to hang out and from where to get a pretty view, head to Kaunos Tea Garden . There, grab one of the tables by the water and have a cup of tea in front of the royal tombs. Another such restaurant is La Boheme Dalyan with sensational food and cocktails. Although you can see tombs from a farther distance there.

Roll in Therapeutic Mud Baths

Let’s be honest, mud spas are not for everyone. Many people will have zero interest in them. But they are worth mentioning a few words as at the end of the day, mud baths are one of Dalyan’s most well-known activities.

As you know, hot springs are said to be good for rheumatism, sciatica, and some skin diseases. There are several mud springs in Dalyan that treat these conditions as well as work wonders for skin rejuvenation and general refreshment.

The Sultaniye Thermals and Mud Baths are the most popular ones situated by the Köyceğiz lake. They are known to be magical and miraculous for skin diseases and beautifying treatments. The springs contain calcium chloride, calcium sulphate, calcium sulphide, bromur, radon and radioactive substances.

Sultaniye mud baths

Many resources say that the Köyceğiz mud waters feature a special type of mud “Beauty Mud” and its history goes back to the Kaunos civilization. So, even if you are not a big fan of mud spas, get your swimsuit ready for this therapeutic experience while in Dalyan.

You may encounter crowds in the afternoon at their facilities as boat tours also stop there. Thus the best time to go is in the first part of the day during the week or closer to the evening.

Eat Best Kebab and River Fish in Town

There are two restaurants you absolutely have to visit in Dalyan.

One of them is Mahir’s located on Maraş street here , which is in the main plaza of the town and right behind the colorful Dalyan sign. The family who owns this place is very welcoming.

They are originally from Mardin, where they specialized in meats and kebabs, and spicy tastes. Anything you order will be delicious, but I highly recommend the Adana Kebab  and the Tavuk Sis . I have never tried such tender, high-quality meat. Best in Turkiye.

The second one is Yener’s palas , located by the river here . You can eat some of the freshest fish in town in this restaurant, and most importantly, during crab season, you can try blue crab, which is a specialty of the Dalyan river.

To start your meal, ask for some mezes and accompany your meal with Raki. Raki is the national alcoholic beverage of Turkey and it is made of twice-distilled grapes. It is not for everyone but you should try it at least once.

Don’t Miss a Sunset From All the Out-of-this-World Viewpoints & From Iztuzu Beach

sunset in Turkey

I cover all the information about Iztuzu beach previously. Whether you go on a boat tour or other method of transportation, make sure you enjoy the sunset at this awesome sand paradise.

However, there are also two other viewpoints in Dalyan that you CANNOT miss. They are not the most accessible, the roads are not very friendly, and often you may see turtles or other animals in front of you and they will make you stop suddenly as you are trying to reach these places. Yet they are 100% worth your time:

1. Radar Tepe Manzara Noktası

Find the exact coordinates for this viewpoint here .

Radar Tepe hilltop is located right after Iztuzu Beach. So it makes it a great place to end the day after being at the beach and turtle center. It is a bit tricky, and the roads are quite bad, but this also means there will be fewer people in the way of your Instagram shots when you make it to the top. Watching a sunset from there, by yourself has no price.

The best way to reach this viewpoint is partially by car and on foot. If you have a two-wheel drive car, then drive to the end of the road (it’s partially asphalt and gravel) and walk for about 20 minutes. The rest of the road is in very bad condition and can be accessed by 4WD only. But better don’t bother if you don’t have experience driving on hilly off-roads.

One side of Radar Hill faces the open sea, where you can watch the sun go down in color. On the other side, as in the photo, you can see Iztuzu Beach, Çandar Hill, Sülüngür Lake, Dalyan delta and Köyceğiz Lake in the distance.

view of Dalyan from Radar Hill

2. Çandır Seyir Terası

Çandar Hill is another incredible viewpoint that you can find using these coordinates . (See photo above on the right)

This outlook is on the side of the Ancient City, so my recommendation is for you to go there after your visit to Kaunos city. The ride up this mountain can be challenging as the roads are mostly thin and made up of dirt and rocks. Make sure to check those tires and have plenty of fuel on your way up as this is not a place you want to get stuck or run out of gas.

When you arrive, you will be greeted by a magnificent view of Dalyan, such as Radar Hill. Compared to Radar Hill, you can see the reeds of Dalyan more closely and in detail. And as a bonus – someone put a refrigerator there, which is selling beer, haha, including one without the alcohol.

Make sure you bring all the necessary things to these two viewpoints and use the bathroom beforehand since there are no bars, restaurants, or any facilities. You literally will be driving up to the top of a mountain to delight yourself with the “out-of-this-world” views and in most cases, you will be alone up there. Can it get any better?

Spend the Evening by Sülüngür Lake

Sülüngür Lake is a freshwater lake just behind Iztuzu Beach, famous for its sunsets. It is very popular among Turkish people who come to its shore with beer and their chairs to watch the sunset by the lake. If you spend a few days in Dalyan and go for views from the two main hill points I mentioned above, then come here for another evening.

Swimming and fishing in the lake are prohibited because the lake water is used by the fish cooperative for sea bream and sea bass farming. The lake is also the spawning point of the Nile Tortoise, a soft-shelled freshwater turtle.

But no one forbids having a picnic by the lake or getting a drink in the tea garden like Ekin Kir Evi restaurant for example. Another must-do thing in this part of Dalyan is to walk on the trail by the lake.

Cycle or Walk on the Eco Trail

Hiking eco trail in Iztuzu Beach

Over the last few years, Dalyan became famous for one more thing – eco hiking, thanks to The Eco Trails company which helps to explore local nature from a different perspective.

The Eco Trail initiative, which covers the Köyceğiz, Dalaman and Ortaca districts of Muğla, has the mission to raise awareness through long-distance hiking and cycling on marked cycling and walking routes.

For this reason, the routes pass through waterways, wetlands, and wildlife with endangered species and promote the philosophy that water is life. The total length of a walking eco route is about 470 kilometers with 3 major trails. And cycling route is 700 kilometers long with 14 different trails.

Everything you need to be able to hit the trail is a guidebook, the eco trails website (that I mentioned above), and mobile application which is very helpful with showing the routes. On your Dalyan holidays, consider following the walking and cycling routes between Köyceğiz and Dalyan for wildlife and more scenic views.

Stay in a Beautiful Hotel Overnight

Dalyan resorts are everywhere throughout the town and many of them have a front view of the Kaunos tombs, however having been in many of the resorts, hotels, and motels, I want to highly recommend you check out two of my favorite properties. One – Yalicapkin Cottage , a country house with a small outdoor pool right in the secluded riverside spot and Dalyan Holiday Hotel in the center of Dalyan.

The first hotel is wonderful for couples as it can accommodate two people. It is perfect for people on honeymoons to Turkey or those who want to spend quality time together as a couple.

Yalicapkin Cottage

This property offers an outdoor pool and a shared motor boat with a water bicycle and 2 bikes for guests’ use. Staying here guarantees your own private spot with turtles, fish, butterflies, dragonflies and kingfishers in a peaceful quiet location, yet 20-minute walk to Dalyan center with all the bars and restaurants.

The second hotel is a family business run by a mother and son who go above and beyond to not only make you feel at home but as a family. I have been to plenty of hotels and Airbnbs and I can’t remember the last time I didn’t feel like a guest in someone’s place but as a resident there.

Believe me when I tell you, every time I have stayed there, I feel like I need to help them with their chores as if I was part of the family and I need to participate in the household responsibilities.

This hotel has about 20 rooms and a wonderful pool, bar, and garden that has the best view of the tombs. Having breakfast here every morning and seeing the tombs, makes you feel like you are in a very special place witnessing history evolve in front of your eyes.

Final Word About a Visit to Dalyan

There are many beautiful and unique cities in Turkey where you want to plan a trip. But besides cities, there are many more cozy and diverse towns that also cannot be missed. Dalyan is just one of them. Don’t skip it when planning an itinerary to Turkey and thinking to go to the Adriatic and Mediterranean coasts.

NOTE : It is easy to explore all the sites I mentioned in this post by car, bike, or public transport. However, doing a boat tour is a great way to experience it all. You can hear one-of-a-kind stories, get unique information from the captain, and have a chance to see some turtles. This experience is not one you want to miss.

This is also a great way to enjoy all these locations if you have time constraints or if you prefer to view them in one day and then choose where you want to spend more time at. There is only one bad thing about this town… you might get addicted to coming back as many times as possible. Good luck and have fun discovering it!

The growing but still beautiful riverside resort of Dalyan , 24km west of Dalaman, is home to around five thousand people. It makes a good base for visiting nearby attractions like the ancient site of Kaunos across the river, İztuzu beach at the river mouth, and the beautiful freshwater lake of Köyceğiz with its shoreline hot springs.

Bike rides from Dalyan

İztuzu beach.

Dalyan first came to prominence in 1986, when controversy erupted over a proposed luxury hotel on nearby İztuzu beach, a hatching ground for loggerhead turtles . Conservationists succeeded in halting the scheme, and now the beach is statutorily protected between May and October, when eggs are laid. In the wake of this campaign, the town styled itself as ecologically correct, but with its mess of identikit restaurants, trinket shops, T-shirt vendors and loud bars, it’s now, riverside location apart, little different from other mainstream resorts. You’ll notice the turtle motif everywhere, from the turtle statue in the main square to restaurants and pansiyon s being named after the creatures.

Life in Dalyan revolves around the Dalyan Çayı , which flows past the village between Köyceğiz lake and the sea. Many choice pansiyon s line the river’s east bank, and the boats that put-put up and down it are the preferred means of transport to the major local sites. Craft heading downstream pass a series of spectacular fourth-century BC “ temple ” tombs in the west-bank cliffs.

Magical Turkey

Visit Gobekli Tepe and Mount Nemrut in Southeastern Anatolia before proceeding to Cappadocia with its volcanic scenery. After a few days in the valleys, continue to Pamukkale and the ancient city of Ephesus. Your tour starts and ends in Istanbul.

Renting a mountain bike in Dalyan is an appealing option in the cooler months; they’re available at better hotels and certain travel agents for around TL15 a day, or from the Lindos Pansiyon at TL25 for a quality machine.

The best local ride is to İztuzu beach : there’s one nasty hill en route, with ayran and gözleme stalls to pause at for refreshment in the village of Gökbel. This land route is recommended at least once, as you loop around the Sulungur lake and get glimpses of marsh and mountain not possible amid the claustrophobic reed beds of the Dalyan Çayı. Alternatively, bikes can be rented on the far bank, with various attractions accessible on both paved and dirt roads.

Tourism and turtles have been made to coexist uneasily on the beautiful hard-packed sand of İztuzu beach . Be sure to look out for turtle nests , which can all too easily be trampled on. Turtle tracks – scrapings where the creatures have hauled themselves up onto the beach to lay their eggs – are visible in the sand during June and July. The marshes immediately behind are often alive with other wildlife too, while the approach road is lined with flowering oleander bushes, as well as trees deformed by high winter winds.

Lack of shade is a problem, though at the river end of the beach you can rent a couple of sunbeds and an umbrella for TL9. The two identical and expensive snack kiosks, at either end of the beach, only sell crisps, ice cream, gözleme and sandviç , so it’s best to bring some food. Umbrellas, whose masts damage the turtle nests, are not permitted from a line of squat marker-stakes down to the sea, and all access to the beach is banned at night in summer. Thanks to wind exposure, the water can be choppy and murky, but the gently shelving sea bed makes İztuzu excellent for children.

You can also be ferried across the river mouth (don’t swim, there are dangerous currents) to a smaller, more peaceful beach, shaded by some pines.

Excavations at ancient Kaunos began in 1967 and still take place each summer under the aegis of Başkent University. While the ruins are far from spectacular, they’re well labelled with CGI reconstructions, and the site is among the least deservedly overlooked archeological sites on the Mediterranean coast. It’s alive with herons and storks in summer, flamingos in winter, plus terrapins, tortoises, snakes and lizards in all seasons.

Passengers arriving by tour boat disembark either at the fish weir (dalyan means weir) or at another jetty at the base of the outcrop supporting Kaunos’s acropolis. The fish caught are mostly grey mullet and bass, and a Kaunos ancient inscription suggests they’ve been part of the local diet since ancient times. From either landing point it’s a seven-minute walk up to the fenced site.

Brief history

Although Kaunos was a ninth-century BC Carian foundation, it exhibited Lycian cultural traits, not least the compulsion to adorn nearby cliffs with rock tombs. Kaunos was also closely allied to the principal Lycian city of Xanthos; when the Persian Harpagos attempted to conquer the region in the sixth century BC, these two cities were the only ones to resist. Kaunos began to acquire a Greek character under the Hellenizing Carian ruler Mausolus. Subsequently, the city passed to the Ptolemies; then to the Rhodians; and finally, after fierce resistance to Rhodes, it came under indirect Roman imperial administration. Besides its fish, Kaunos was noted both for its figs, and the prevalence of malaria; excessive fig consumption was erroneously deemed the cause, rather than the anopheles mosquitoes which, until 1948, infested the surrounding swamps. Another insidious problem was the silting up of its harbour, which continually threatened the city’s commerce. The Mediterranean originally came right up to the foot of the acropolis hill, surrounding Kaunos on all sides apart from an isthmus of land to the north. But the Dalyan Çayı has since deposited over 5km of silt, leaving an expanse of marshy delta in its wake.

Dalyan is a small resort town in Lycia on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. It's administratively part of Muğla province and in 2020 had a population of 5564. The main attraction is the ancient port of Kaunos, which silted up and lost its importance when a sandbar formed across the river estuary. This turned the navigable bay into a reedy wetland, and the site was abandoned in the 15th century AD.

Dalyan is 29 km west of Dalaman Airport. Most visitors arrive on package flights from Europe, and the coach transfer takes about 40 minutes.

Buses from Istanbul and Izmir towards Fethiye follow Highway D400 and stop in Ortaca village and Dalaman's edge of town bus station - from those take a bus or dolmuş into Dalyan. The Havaş bus from Dalaman Airport to Marmaris also stops there, but charges the full fare to Marmaris.

Muttaş [dead link] is the regional bus company, run by Muğla district council. Bus 8-8 runs every 15 min between Ortaca and Dalyan via Okçular, and Bus 8-9 is a less frequent service via Eskiköy.

Buses and dolmuşes stop along Atatürk Cd the main boulevard in Dalyan, there isn't a bus station.

36.8251 28.6342 1 Dalyan-Kaunos Feribot is the main access to the ancient city. It plies across the river on demand, and has space for cars (50 TL) but most visitors cross on foot (10 TL pp) then walk 500 m to the ruins. Two other ferries upstream land you much further from Kaunos.

Muttaş Bus 8-10 runs to Iztuzu beach but only twice a day, take a dolmuş or river boat.

  • 36.8343 28.6325 1 Tombs of the Kings ( Kral Mezarları ) are often the visitor's first sight of Kaunos, etched into the cliffs facing town across the river. The six tombs are from 4th to 2nd century BC. They're nominally open daily 09:00 till dusk; if the main access is closed you can view them from the modern cemetery.
  • 36.8249 28.6261 2 Acropolis or "Persikon" is on a 152 m rock. It was re-fortified in the Byzantine era against Arab attack but its ruins are scrappy, you ascend for the view. Heraklion is the smaller rock and fortification next to it, which once stood by the sea.
  • 36.8254 28.6234 3 Amphitheatre has a capacity of 5000 and still occasionally hosts performances.
  • 36.8259 28.6206 4 Sanctuary of Apollo is the most interesting of the six temples so far excavated, with a circle of columns. It's from 3rd century BC.
  • 36.8255 28.6188 5 Palaestra was the wrestling school and gymnasium. Baths were added in Roman times, then a basilica was built in the 5th century AD.

dalyan travel guide

  • 36.824 28.619 6 Sülüklü Göl was the inner harbour, but has silted up to a muddy puddle - the modern name means "Lake of Leeches". The flat area between lake and Palaestra was the town market-place or agora, which continued so even after the harbour was no longer navigable and trade shifted to the outer port. It was embellished by bronze statues of Roman bigwigs, but only their pedestals remain, and the statues were melted down in the Byzantine era. There are also ruins of a stoa - a covered walkway - and a Nymphaeum, a monument dedicated to the water-nymphs. Nothing remains of the outer port.
  • City walls are best preserved at the west edge of the site. They were erected during the reign of Mausolos in the 4th century BC - this is the fellow who built himself a tomb so splendid at Halicarnassus (nowadays Bodrum ) that it gave us the term "mausoleum".
  • 36.815 28.625 7 Dalyan estuary is the wetland delta south of town, an important habitat for birdlife.
  • 36.792 28.62 8 Iztuzu Beach is the 5 km sandbar that choked the estuary and put an end to Kaunos. It's the beach strip for Dalyan and river boats land near its west tip, while the east end by the turtle sanctuary is reached by road. Loggerhead Turtles ( Caretta caretta ) and green turtles ( Chelonia mydas ) lay their eggs here, and sections of beach are closed in the May-Oct nesting season.
  • 36.7766 28.6339 9 Turtle Sanctuary ( Kaplumbağa Hastanesi ). Daily 10:00-18:00 . The sanctuary guards the nesting areas, nurses injured turtles, and monitors their populations. ( updated Jul 2023 )

Do [ edit ]

dalyan travel guide

  • Mud baths are west riverbank near the north ferry crossing, and in town at Peloi Hamam. The water is piped in, warm rather than hot, and they feel a bit tourist-trappy. Still you undeniably get muddy and smelly for your 50 TL, and your pants will never recover.
  • Boat trips go downstream through the delta and upstream to Köyceğiz Lake.

Buy [ edit ]

  • Lots of little stores in town centre, A101 is the main chain. They're open daily 09:00 to 22:00 or later.

Eat [ edit ]

  • A couple of dozen small restaurants in town centre, no stand-out, and no escape from trad Turkish cuisine.

Drink [ edit ]

  • Over a dozen bars along Maraş Cd in town centre.

What to do in Dalyan (Mugla)

1. the stony silence of an economic giant.

With local women handling the oars, a quick rowboat trip from Dalyan and a short climb leads to the archaeological treasures still being unearthed in Kaunos. This once opulent, bustling center of commerce between the Mediterranean and Aegean seas dates from the 4th century, and represents an astonishing multi-cultural tapestry of Persian, Greek, Roman and Byzantine influences. In addition to the acropolis, Kaunos' key sights include elaborate, cliff-side, rock-cut tombs with imposing facades typifying the Greek Hellenic tradition, as well as extraordinary Roman baths, a 6th-century Byzantine church, a number of both Greek and Roman temples, and a magnificently-preserved, 2nd century amphitheater that seated 5,000 spectators. Offering breathtaking views of the sea and surrounding countryside, Kaunos is home to some of the most varied wildlife in Turkey.

2. Ah, Feel The Mud!

About ten minutes upriver from Dalyan, the Sultaniye Thermal Baths is a place to apply the "beauty mud" and then relax and rejuvenate in 105-degree thermal sulphuric pools. Unlike Turkish baths that cater to tourists, Sultaniye is where locals have made a pilgrimage since the baths were first used during the Hellenistic period. According to those same locals, who visit the mineral-rich baths for their curative properties, applying the "beauty mud'' takes 10 years off your age.

3. A Nesting Ground For The Loggerhead

A breeding ground each year for some 300 nests of the endangered loggerhead sea turtle, Iztuzu Beach is a three-mile strip of land that forms a natural barrier between the sea and the fresh water Dalyan River delta. The soft sands of "Turtle Beach" are open only during summer's daylight hours, offering an idyllic spot for swimming and sunning. Environmental rules, such as no pets or vehicles, are in effect, and beach-goers are kept well clear of the nesting zones, where the female Mediterranean loggerhead has come to lay her eggs since the beginning of recorded time.

4. An Environmentalist's Vision Realized

Hundreds of loggerhead and green turtles injured by boat propellers, nets and fishhooks have been saved thanks to the efforts spurred by British environmentalist June Haimoff, aka Kaptan June. Her Sea Turtle Conservation Foundation is headquartered at the south end of Iztuzu Beach, where a dozen or so sea turtles can usually be seen convalescing in the tanks. Kaptan June's original hut has been renovated and returned to the beach as both museum and information center.

5. Dazzlingly Beautiful Dalyan

Rimmed by a mountain range and inundated with lush wetlands, diverse flora, reed beds, marshes and coastal habitat, the Dalyan delta is a nature lover's wonderland. Flying fish, terrapins, tortoises and more than 125 species of birds, including kingfishers, storks and herons, are endemic to the region. When to Visit Dalyan

The best time to visit Dalyan depends on your preferences and interests, as the town offers different attractions and activities throughout the year. However, generally speaking, the most popular and pleasant time to visit Dalyan is between April and October, when the weather is warm and sunny, the sea is calm and clear, and the nature is lush and colorful.

Here are some pros and cons of visiting Dalyan in different seasons:

- Spring (April to June): This is a great time to visit Dalyan if you want to enjoy the mild and sunny weather, the blooming flowers, and the fresh fruits and vegetables. You can also witness the nesting season of the endangered loggerhead turtles, which lay their eggs on the Iztuzu Beach. The downside of visiting Dalyan in spring is that the sea might be too cold for swimming and some attractions might be closed or under maintenance.

- Summer (July to September): This is the peak season for visiting Dalyan, as the weather is hot and dry, the sea is warm and inviting, and the town is lively and festive. You can enjoy the beach, the boat trips, the outdoor activities, and the nightlife. You can also see the baby turtles hatching and making their way to the sea. The downside of visiting Dalyan in summer is that the town might be too crowded and noisy, the prices might be higher, and the heat might be unbearable for some people.

- Autumn (October to November): This is another great time to visit Dalyan, as the weather is still warm and sunny, the sea is still pleasant for swimming, and the town is less crowded and more relaxed. You can enjoy the changing colors of the nature, the harvest season of the local produce, and the cultural events and festivals. The downside of visiting Dalyan in autumn is that the days might be shorter and the nights might be cooler, and some attractions might be closed or under maintenance.

- Winter (December to March): This is the low season for visiting Dalyan, as the weather is cold and rainy, the sea is rough and murky, and the town is quiet and sleepy. You can enjoy the cozy and peaceful atmosphere, the lower prices, and the local hospitality. You can also explore the historical and cultural sites, such as the rock tombs, the ancient city, and the mosque. The downside of visiting Dalyan in winter is that the town might be too dull and boring, the activities and services might be limited or unavailable, and the transport might be less frequent or reliable.

- See the Dalyan Rock Tombs and the Kaunos Ancient City: If you are interested in history and culture, you should definitely visit the Dalyan Rock Tombs and the Kaunos Ancient City, which are two of the most impressive and fascinating historical sites in Dalyan. The rock tombs are carved into the cliffs on the opposite side of the river, and they date back to the 4th century BC. They are the resting places of the kings and nobles of the ancient Lycian civilization, and they are decorated with elaborate reliefs and inscriptions. The rock tombs are best viewed from the river or from the hilltop, where you can also enjoy a panoramic view of the town and the delta. The ancient city of Kaunos is located about 3 km from the town center, and it was once a thriving port city that was founded in the 9th century BC. The city was abandoned in the 15th century AD, and it is now a vast archaeological site that reveals the traces of different civilizations, such as the Lycians, the Greeks, the Romans, and the Byzantines. You can explore the ruins of the city, such as the theater, the acropolis, the temples, the baths, the churches, and the walls, and imagine how life was like in the past. You can also visit the museum, which displays some of the artifacts and information about the city and its history. The springs are surrounded by lush and green vegetation, and they offer a soothing and tranquil atmosphere. You can enjoy the warmth and the comfort of the water, as well as the views of the river and the mountains. The springs are open to the public from 8 am to 8 pm, with a small entrance fee. The mosque is located in the town center, and it is a beautiful and elegant building that was built in the 19th century. The mosque is a place of worship and prayer for the local Muslim community, and it is also a place of interest and respect for the visitors. Akyaka and Dalyan Travel Guide

While most people hotfoot it to Bodrum and Marmaris on the southwestern coast for Turkey holidays, they’re missing a trick – the riverside towns of Akyaka and Dalyan. Part of the “slow city” movement, low-key Akyaka is wedged between pine-clad mountains and a silvery beach at the far end of the Gulf of Gökova. To the south, Dalyan is threaded with picturesque waterways and home to the ancient ruins of Kaunos. Both towns are rich in food, history and nature. Here’s our destination guide to Akyaka and Dalyan to help you make the most of your holidays in Turkey.

The best time to visit Akyaka is from late June to early September, but try to travel outside peak summer for Dalyan to avoid the package-tour crowds.

How to get to Akyaka and Dalyan

Simena castle near Kekova Island in Turkey

Simena castle near Kekova Island

Between April and October, daily flights connect most UK airports and Dalaman, from which Dalyan is a 40-minute taxi journey. Ferries run from Marmaris to the outskirts of Dalyan, whereupon smaller boats continue on to the village. From Marmaris, Akyaka is a 25-minute journey by car.

Kaunos Rock Tombs - Dalyan

Kaunos Rock Tombs – Dalyan

One of the best things to do in Dalyan is to visit the remains of Kaunos, an ancient port city dating back to the ninth-century BC. Small boats putt along the river from town, weaving past the incredible Lycian rock tombs hewn into the cliffs, to the atmospheric ruins, strewn with the remains of a theatre, bathhouse and acropolis.

Akyaka and Dalyan offer some of the finest traditional Turkish food . Akyaka is an emerging foodie hotspot, with excellent fish restaurants and day-fresh local produce at a daily market. Dalyan restaurants are of a world-class standard, many sitting on the riverbanks for views of the illuminated tombs.

Bordering a wetland coastland area, Akyaka hugs the banks of the Azmak River, which winds down to the harbour and silver-sand beach. As if that isn’t enough natural drama, the town is backed by protected forests and set against a mountainous backdrop. A meandering riverboat ride is one of the best things to do in Akyaka .

Life too revolves heavily around waterways in Dalyan. Boats chug along the river between Lake Köyceğiz, whose shoreline is dotted with hot springs, and İztuzu beach, the nesting site of loggerhead turtles. The sands are backed by marshes teeming with wildlife – storks, kingfishers, terrapins, herons.

Architecture

The second town in Turkey to join the Cittaslow (“slow city”) movement, Akyaka has resisted unsightly development by setting criteria for architecture. First introduced by award-winning architect Nail Çakırhan in the 1970s, the town’s Ottoman-style whitewashed houses are punctuated with balconies and intricate woodwork, crowned with pine-timbered eaves and red roofs. Today all new buildings must adhere to this style.

Hidden gems

Şirince near Akyaka

Şirince, an art village near Akyaka

  • Explore the pretty village of Şirince, near Akyaka, whose huddle of red-roofed houses cling to a forested hillside.
  • Rent a kayak from Akyaka Beach to paddle across the bay and along the Azmak River in search of otters.
  • A new network of ECO Trails weaves through the Dalyan delta, connecting the region’s lagoons, wetlands, rivers, forests and beaches.
  • Two miles from downtown, the tiny Yaliçapkini (Kingfisher) is an under-the-radar Dalyan restaurant set in a tranquil spot among giant reeds, with a simple but sublime menu of local fish and meze.

Things to do in Dalyan and Akyaka

Cinar Beach Akyaka and Dalyan

Cinar Beach

Hit the beaches

Akyaka Beach is a wide swathe of sand peppered with sunbeds and thatched parasols, close to a cluster of restaurants. Along the coast is secluded Cinar, home to a solitary beach bar, pebbly cove beach and calm, cool waters – all against a dramatic mountainous backdrop. Akyaka is a kiteboarding hotspot, thanks to its excellent surf, sandy shallows and warm winds. Head to Akçapınar Beach for lessons or equipment hire; try Kitesurfing Akyaka or the Kite Academy , one of the best in Turkey.

Near Dalyan, İztuzu is a long stretch of flour-fine sand, popular with swimmers and sunbathers. In summer, the beach is closed at night to protect the loggerhead turtles that come ashore to nest. Boats also ferry sun-seekers across the river mouth (dangerous currents prohibit swimming) to a smaller, quieter beach, shaded by pine trees.

Explore local ruins and ancient treasures

Take a boat trip from Akyaka harbour to “Cleopatra’s beach” on Sedir Island, whose sand is believed to have been brought from Egypt by Mark Antony. Hellenic and Roman ruins are strewn across the island, including a stunning amphitheatre, partially reclaimed by gnarled olive trees. From here, you can also drive to the ruined city of Ephesus.

The jewel in Dalyan’s historic crown is the ancient site of Kaunos. The riverboat journey to the ruins is one of our top things to do in Dalyan, passing a series of 3,000-year-old rock tombs, beautifully carved into the cliff face high above.

Follow the culinary trail

For traditional Turkish food , you can’t go wrong in Akyaka and Dalyan. It’s all about the slow-food culture in Akyaka. Start in the daily produce market to sample street food favourites like gözleme (thin pancakes) and pide (Turkish pizza). Locally caught fish is a local speciality, served fresh in a clutch of restaurants hugging the banks of the Azmak River. Try Halil In Yeri for plates of superb meze prepared using olive oil and lemons from its own organic groves. Ev yemekleri (home cooking) cafes favour a simple, traditional Turkish food, such as soups and stews; a couple of good options are Ayse Ananin Yeri or Kristal.

Dalyan restaurants have long been on the radar of foodies. A string of restaurants along the riverbanks make the most of their picturesque location with wooden decks overlooking the Lycian tombs – illuminated at night. Try Aktaş Restaurant for meze – think antep ezmesi (spicy tomato salad), aubergine salad, geren (marinated samphire), grilled octopus.

Visit The Blue Lagoon in Ölüdeniz

dalyan travel guide

The Blue Lagoon in Ölüdeniz is a natural marvel, one of Turkey’s most iconic coastal destinations, and my favourite place in the Dalaman region.

Located along Turkey’s southwestern coast near Fethiye, the Blue Lagoon will knock your socks off with its clear, turquoise waters, pristine beaches, and mountainous surroundings.

The lagoon is renowned for its tranquil ambience and unparalleled beauty, making it a favourite spot for locals and tourists.

Guide to Dalaman - Turkey's Turquoise Coast

At the Blue Lagoon in Ölüdeniz, you can swim, snorkel or paddle through the sparkling waters; there’s also a sandy beach area where you can rent sunbeds, pedalos and kayaks.

Nearby, you’ll find a range of bars and restaurants where you can relax with a cocktail or three and soak up the dreamy views.

Guide to Dalaman - Turkey's Turquoise Coast

Relax in the Blue Lagoon National Park

At the western end of the Blue Lagoon is a national park, which requires a small entrance fee. Alternatively, on the opposite side of the lagoon, there are private beaches with restaurants and bars that you can access for the day—for a fee—and use the facilities.

I would highly recommend spending the day swimming, sunbathing or paddling in this little slice of blue paradise.

Check out the Dalaman region’s beaches

dalyan travel guide

The Dalaman region has some of the best beaches in Turkey, with turquoise blue waters, golden sands, and lush green landscapes.

Popular beach destinations include Sarigerme Beach, Iztuzu Beach (near Dalyan), and Ölüdeniz Beach, famous for its azure lagoon and paragliding opportunities.

Sarigerme Beach

dalyan travel guide

Sarigerme Beach is a beautiful Dalaman beach known for its pristine shoreline and shallow turquoise waters. Situated near Ortaca, this blue bolt-hole is ideal for families and couples who want a lazy beach day.

Sarıgerme Beach also offers a range of water sports activities, including windsurfing, kiteboarding, and jet skiing.

In the vicinity of Dalyan lies İztuzu Beach, a natural marvel renowned for its beauty and ecological significance.

İztuzu Beach

dalyan travel guide

İztuzu Beach serves as a protected nesting ground for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) and offers visitors a unique opportunity to observe these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.

The beach is accessible by boat from Dalyan. It features soft golden sand and calm waters, providing a serene setting for relaxation and wildlife spotting.

Patara Beach

dalyan travel guide

Patara Beach, located near the ancient city of Patara, is another standout destination along the dreamy Dalaman coastline.

Stretching for approximately 18 kilometres, It has pristine dunes, crystal-clear waters, and a tranquil ambience that beckons travellers seeking solitude and natural beauty.

You can also explore the nearby ruins of the ancient Lycian city of Patara, adding a touch of history and culture to your beach experience.

Go paragliding in Olüdeniz

Guide to Dalaman - Turkey's Turquoise Coast

Adrenaline junkies will relish the opportunity to leap 1800 metres off Babadeg Mount and land on the beach on a thrilling paragliding experience.

Paragliding off Babadag Mountain is typically done in tandem with a qualified instructor, so you do not need any prior experience to paraglide in Dalaman.

Scared of heights? Fear not; you’ll be securely strapped to a trained pilot who will control the paraglider while you sit back and admire the views.

How high is the paragliding at Oludeniz?

Olüdeniz is one of Turkey’s best places for tandem paragliding. It offers incredible views of the beach and Blue Lagoon below.

The takeoff point for paragliding here is off Babadag Mountain, at an elevation of around 1,965 meters (6,447 feet) above sea level.

Book paragliding in Olüdeniz

dalyan travel guide

There are paragliding companies in Olüdeniz, and I recommend doing thorough research, reading reviews, and booking your paragliding experience online .

The cost of paragliding in Olüdeniz can vary. Most reputable paragliding companies should offer transfers, full insurance, and professional instructors.

After having a total anxiety vomit in a beach bar, we were soon taken up the twisty roads of the mountain.

Is it safe to paraglide in Oludeniz?

dalyan travel guide

Utter fear and travel sickness took hold, and I was positively green on the way up as the pilots tried to reassure me that it was all “totally safe” as our van hurtled around narrow roads with severe mountainside drops.

On top of the mountain, you are kitted up, and discussions on how you wish to fly are discussed with your ‘pilot’.

If you have a nervous disposition like mine, you can choose turns, spins, spiral dives, acrobatics, or a nice gentle glide down.

I felt completely safe during the experience, but it is important to choose an Oludeniz paragliding company that is well-established, licensed and has a good reputation for safety.

Licensed operators undergo regular inspections and adhere to safety regulations set by local authorities.

Guide to Dalaman - Turkey's Turquoise Coast

I requested the ‘slowest and most serene flight possible’. My pilot looked disappointed until I explained I once threw up over an overzealous skydive dive instructor in Australia.

Once you have taken flight by running towards the edge of a mountain, you are soon floating through the air with the most spectacular views.

You can gaze down at the beautiful beach where you will be landing. You won’t regret this exhilarating flight, and I highly recommend booking an Olüdeniz paragliding experience .

Enjoy a Dalyan River cruise

Guide to Dalaman - Turkey's Turquoise Coast

Set sail up the pretty Dalyan River for an afternoon of swimming, turtle spotting and Turkish history. Boat trips are popular for tourists visiting the town of Dalyan in southwestern Turkey who want to see the river’s ecosystem and rock-carved relics.

The boats used for Dalyan River tours are typically traditional Turkish wooden boats called “piyade” or “kayik.”

These boats are well-suited for navigating the river’s shallow waters and narrow channels. A range of Dalyan boat trips will take you up the river and towards ‘Turtle Beach’.

We were lucky enough to have a private boat with a bar and a BBQ, perfect for a day’s sailing indulgence.

How do I get to Lycian rock tombs?

dalyan travel guide

On a typical Dalyan boat trip, you will sail through pretty reeds and also pass the Lycian rock tombs.

These cliff-carved tombs, dating back to 400 BC, are the final resting place of the kings of Kaunos. They are so imposing and beautiful that they almost don’t look real.

I couldn’t believe this was Turkey as we glided through aquamarine waters and then towards ‘Turtle Beach’. It was a world away from the busy resorts and clubs I had seen in Marmaris.

dalyan travel guide

It’s located at the mouth of the river, with salt water on one side and fresh water on the other. During your boat trip, you should be on the lookout for sea turtles.

It can be tricky to sip wine on a boat and be on the alert for turtles. Probably one of the more pressing first-world problems of all time.

Iztuzu Beach turtle spotting

I was lucky enough to spot a turtle as I had my camera in hand; I frantically started snapping and got him peeking his head out of the water.

This means I can confidently add ‘ wildlife photographer’ to my LinkedIn profile. We briefly docked at Iztuzu Beach [turtle beach] and spent some time looking for turtle nests and having a paddle in the sea.

dalyan travel guide

Due to tidal conditions, our captain stressed that we must return to the boat on time. He wasn’t kidding around; as we left, we could see several boats struggling to sail in the shallow waters.

It took every ounce of self-control not to start a wine-fuelled rendition of Titanic’s signature song, ‘My Heart Will Go On. ‘ Clearly, I have grown as a person.

Have a Turkish Mud bath experience in Dalyan

dalyan travel guide

“ Dalyan Peloid mud bath has been accredited by the Ministry of Health”, enthused our guide as we entered the Peloid mud bath.

This immediately conjured up images of a humourless bureaucrat waist-deep in the mud with a clipboard and a rubber stamp.

Our guide explained that the Peloid mud bath Dalyan consisted of clay minerals, humic acid, lignin, hemicellulose, and other scientific terms that I struggled to follow.

He explained that a Turkish Mud Bath experience typically involves covering your body in natural mud, which is rich in minerals and believed to have various health benefits.

The mud in Dalyman is known for its therapeutic properties, including improving skin texture, exfoliating dead skin cells, and promoting relaxation.

Peloid mud bath Dalaman Turkey

Turkey mud bath experience

The mud bath complex has changing rooms, showers, a snack kiosk, a shop and treatments such as a ‘fish spa’.

This is where you pop your feet in a tank, and lots of tiny fish nibble away the hardened skin on your feet [ewwww].

Peloid mud bath

Bathing in mud is childlike and rather wonderful; you can squelch around, smear mud all over yourself, and roll around in glee.

You lie on a bench and bake yourself in the mud before showering it off. Be warned; the mud gets EVERYWHERE.

Book a Dalyan Mud Bath tour

There are different mud areas, each infused with herbs or oil, including sage and rose oil. After spending some time baked in the mud, my skin did feel a little smoother, to be fair.

If you are looking for alternative beauty treatments, this could be exactly the outdoor spa you want in Turkey.

Set sail on an island boat trip from Göcek

12 island boat trip Göcek Turkey

Set sail from Göcek Harbour and sunbathe, swim, and snorkelling around picturesque islands.

When you take a 12 Island Boat Trip from Fethiye , you can explore several different islands and Dalamnan beaches and bays. Set sail and enjoy time to relax onboard, swim, sunbathe, and snorkel on a top-notch boat.

Dalyan 12 Island tour

dalyan travel guide

Our boat trip made several stops in some beautiful secluded bays. This meant we could swim in the crystal clear blue water and enjoy amazing views of the turquoise bays, small islands and tiny beaches, including Gocek Island, Flat Island, Dockyard Island & Red Island.

One of the beaches even had adorable goats peering out at us from the beach. We could hear the tinkle of their bells as they ambled across the hills.

It was a scene that was so tranquil I thought I must be dreaming or perhaps mildly inebriated from all the wine.

dalyan travel guide

Sailing in Göcek

Our boat trip also included BBQ lunch on board and a selection of wines, beers and soft drinks.

Like many boat trips, you get what you pay for, which is also true of Göcek boat tours. One of the best parts of the day was when we feasted on fresh fish grilled off the side of the boat.

There’s nothing quite like a healthy, simple fish dish served with lemon, salads and meze to make you feel you deserve that extra glass of wine!

Explore the Ghost Village Of Kayakoy

The ghost town of Kayakoy is tragically all that is left of a once-thriving village in Turkey.

The town was abandoned after the  Turkish Greek Population exchange  that took place after the founding of the Turkish Republic in the 1920s.

Kayakoy is now an open-air museum with around 3500 preserved houses and three churches. The largest of the churches is the beautiful and deserted Basilica of Panayia Pyrgiotissa.

Ghost Village Of Kayakoy Turkey

Booking a Kayakoy tour

To get the most out of this area, I recommend booking a guided tour to Kayakoy with a knowledgeable tour guide who knows the town’s history.

This way, you can get an accurate and informed insight into how the terrible events unfolded here.

Alternatively, you can read up on the history and catch a regular local bus from Fethiye to explore the town.

Selimiye is a small seaside fishing village about 25 miles from the city of Marmaris, Turkey. It’s located on the Bozburun Peninsula along the Aegean Sea.

Hire yourself a SUP board and explore the picturesque marina whilst trying to maintain your balance whilst balancing on a giant board.

If you successfully paddle, ensure someone captures your boarding grace. Immediately start demanding pictures from the water and disturb the serenity, anything for ‘the gram’, right?

After your paddling session, make sure you spend some time exploring this gorgeous, sleepy village.

There are sunbeds to relax on, you can swim in balmy water, and you can also dine at fabulous waterside restaurants, sipping wine whilst you admire the view.

Visit the Fethiye fish market

dalyan travel guide

Visiting the Fethiye fish market in the heart of Fethiye town is an absolute must for seafood lovers.

You can choose your own fish at this vibrant fish market, which will be cooked by one of the surrounding small restaurants for a small fee. You can also order additional meze and drinks at a cost.

dalyan travel guide

We spent a balmy night eating outdoors, with the smell of fresh fish and the strumming of a local band performing for tables as the vino flowed.

Dining out in Turkey is an experience, and the fish market is no different. Don’t expect to scarf your food down in ten minutes and be on your way.

Seemingly endless meze will arrive, rivers of wine will be poured, laughter will ensue, and before you know it, midnight will arrive, and you are somehow still eating prawns.

Browse Stalls at Fethiye market

Fethiye Market Day is when locals and tourists alike come to shop, socialize, and experience the ambience of a traditional Turkish market.

Along with cook-your-own fish stalls, Fethiye Market offers plenty of other retail stalls to browse. You’ll find bars, restaurants, stalls selling spices, fruit, vegetables, and meats, shoes, bags, scarves, and jewellery.

Fethiye market Turkey

Fethiye Market is also a great place to sample and purchase local flavours and products in Turkey.

You can find a colourful array of fresh fruits and vegetables, including juicy oranges, sweet strawberries, succulent figs, locally produced olive oil, honey, and spices.

Spend some time wandering the market and taking in the smells, sights and patter of Turkish stallholders, who will almost have you convinced that it’s definitely a real Chanel bag for €50.

Have the scrub of your life in a Turkish Bath

dalyan travel guide

A Turkish bath is quite unlike any other I have experienced. In Turkey, you can visit a traditional ‘Hamam’, a heated tiled room with a heated stone slab for visitors to lie on.

Indulge your senses and pamper your body with a traditional Turkish Bath in Marmaris. It’s an unforgettable experience.

Having never visited a Turkish bath, I had no idea what to expect. We got changed and spent some time lounging in the sauna before being taken to a large tiled room.

Turkish bath benefits

dalyan travel guide

What happened next was that a man came in, and a man washed me. This is a sentence you don’t expect to say in your adult life.

I was scrubbed, exfoliated, and massaged within an inch of my life and came out absolutely sparkling. I had no idea I was so filthy.

I was terribly British and awkward about the whole thing and felt compelled to keep apologising throughout the washing; I’m not sure for what exactly. Being washed? My awkwardness? Simply existing?

dalyan travel guide

Afterwards, professionally wrapped in towels, we sipped hot tea and giggled at what had just happened.

It’s an unusual experience for a British person, but I highly recommend setting aside your inherent British awkwardness and indulging in some serious scrubbing.

Enjoy Marmaris nightlife

dalyan travel guide

Over the years, the Turkish city of Marmaris has acquired a reputation as a ‘party town’. Holidaymakers flood its main strip to indulge in drinking and dancing until dawn.

Whilst there are many buzzing bars and nightclubs, there are also many chilled-out bars if you want a quiet drink with pals.

You’ll also find lovely restaurants, seaside dining, and late-night cafes if you are old and tired like me and want to be home by 11pm.

Bar Street Marmaris

dalyan travel guide

Strolling down the main bar strip, you’ll find a party, and if you are looking for pumping music, flashing lights, lurid coloured cocktails and smoke machines, then club heaven awaits you, clubbing kittens.

We visited an establishment called ‘Joy’, which looked exactly like the nightclubs of my younger partying days, with strobes, podiums and brightly coloured drinks.

dalyan travel guide

Other popular bars in this area include Back Garden Club, Black Mirror Bar and Palace Beach. If you’re looking for live music, then the beachside bar, Yunus Cafe Bar has chilled live performances and classic cocktails.

Marmaris Dancing Fountain

dalyan travel guide

If you are out and about in Marmaris at night and don’t fancy dancing the night away in a club, I’d recommend watching the dancing fountain show.

Every night on the Marmaris main boulevard, a seemingly ordinary fountain comes to life with lights and music. The music is perfectly timed to the fountain’s whooshes of water. It’s like something you might expect at Disneyland!

Several restaurants face the fountain, where you can grab a seat and watch the dancing water and spectacular light show.

Where to eat Dalaman

Where to eat Dalaman Turket

The Dalaman region offers an excellent culinary experience for curious eaters, focusing on fresh seafood, locally grown fruits and vegetables, and traditional Turkish cuisine.

Some popular local dishes include grilled sea bass, stuffed peppers (dolma), lamb stew (kuzu guvec), and sweet pastries such as baklava and kunefe.

There are plenty of restaurants, cafes, bars and markets across the region where you can feast on Turkish cuisine and international dishes.

Oyster Restaurant, Oludeniz

dalyan travel guide

We had an amazing selection of Meze at  Oyster Restaurant in Oludeniz . It is located right on the promenade, looking out to sea, and the decor is what I would describe as ‘Pinterest goals’.

The restaurant also has a fantastic selection of seafood dishes and meat courses, including Mousakka and lamb chops.

Akyaka restaurant, Azmak river

dalyan travel guide

If you are a fish lover, there is no better place for fresh fish than at one of the traditional restaurants on the Azmak River, just outside Akyaka. Here, you can eat trout freshly caught from the river in a peaceful setting.

dalyan travel guide

We ate at the Azmak restaurant and dined right on the water’s edge as boats and kayaks slowly passed us. My favourite thing about dining in Turkey was the dreamy scenery. Many of the restaurants we visited had capitalised on the incredible views and offered sea-view dining.

Sardunya Restaurant, Selimiye

dalyan travel guide

We ate a huge selection of meze while gazing out over the blue waters at  Sardunya Restaurant in the traditional fishing village of Selimiye.

We were treated to a selection of meze, salads, stuffed mushrooms, and even a goat dish! The restaurant had simple, contemporary decor, a relaxed vibe, and spectacular water views.

If you’re a fan of cats, then you will be greeted by furry visitors to your table, who rub your legs purring, waiting for a tasty morsel to be slipped under the table.

Cafe Savas Anne, Marmaris

dalyan travel guide

Cafe Savas Anne is located on the beach in Marmaris and will make you a stunning cup of Turkish tea. Traditional Turkish tea and Turkish coffee can be found in most places in Turkey.

Turkish tea is often served black, although there are herbal varieties available. Tea is also typically served in curved tea glasses with a small plate underneath for carrying and serving.

Rixos Premium Göcek

dalyan travel guide

I had a delicious Turkish coffee at People’s Restaurant at Rixos Premium Göcek in the swanky Rixos Resort .

dalyan travel guide

The restaurant has beautiful views and exquisite decor, making it a lovely place to relax with Turkish coffee.

This contemporary restaurant also serves a range of à la carte dishes, and the dishes’ presentation and flavours are excellent. We had a leisurely lunch watching the yachts and enjoying the sunshine.

Marmaris Balevi

dalyan travel guide

If you want to try local Turkish food products, I recommend visiting  Marmaris Balevi.

It’s an adorable honey house in Marmaris where you can taste local pine honey, and it also functions as an informative beekeeping museum.

Here, you can learn about bees and beekeeping and taste and purchase sweets made from pine honey.

Honey tasting Marmaris

Turkey is the second most successful producer of honey in the world. The honey house aims to introduce the ‘‘Marmaris Pine Honey’’ brand internationally and educate locals and tourists about beekeeping.

There is a shop and a ridiculously pretty cafe on site where you can buy gorgeous honey deserts.

Where to stay in Dalaman

There’s a huge range of luxury hotels, boutique hotels, budget hotels and swanky resorts.

You can find a hotel that suits your budget and length of time by using  travel resources  such as  Booking.com  to find the best Dalaman hotel deals.

Luxury hotels Dalaman

Holidays are surely the time to spoil yourself, and luckily, there is a range of luxury hotels and resorts in the Dalaman area. We stayed at Sundia By Liberty Ölüdeniz   Liberty Oludeniz Hotel for our first few days on the trip.

This gorgeous hotel has very stylish décor, a restaurant, and a fabulous pool and it is conveniently located near the beach.

dalyan travel guide

Choose from various room options, including standard, superior and family rooms, to suit your needs and budget.

At the hotel, you will find a pool bar serving a range of drinks and two restaurants, including an à la carte restaurant and a buffet restaurant, serving Turkish cuisine and international dishes.

It was a relaxing hotel, and the staff was extremely friendly. The buffet chef would high-five you with a big smile when he flipped a pancake, which I loved.

D-Resort Grand Azur Marmaris

We then switched it up and stayed at the swanky  D-Resort Grand Azu r Marmaris. This gorgeous resort has a beachside location, freshwater pool, spa, pool bar and several dining options.

There is a serious wow factor in this hotel. I looked around the grandiose lobby and immediately made a mental note to brush my hair and put on some ‘nice shoes’ as my mother would call them.

All-Inclusive Resort Dalaman Turkey

You can choose from various rooms, including double or twin rooms with and without a sea view or a suite with a land or sea view.

The hotel also offers ‘All-Inclusive Plus’ on a board basis. The buffet restaurant has one of the most extensive breakfast selections ever.

dalyan travel guide

There’s a huge spread of local breakfast options and more typical European offerings. I sat on the terrace and enjoyed a lovely pool view with my coffee. I was so chilled out I almost nodded off at the table.

dalyan travel guide

The pools are a brilliant feature; two outdoor freshwater pools and two indoor pools, with a pool bar and free towels.

Spend an indulgent morning relaxing poolside with a coffee [or a cocktail; you are on holiday, after all] and have the occasional lazy dip in the pool. Utter bliss.

dalyan travel guide

My favourite part of the hotel was the beachside bar, where you could sip wine in a chilled-out setting and watch the sun go down in full relaxation mode.

I recommend D Resort Grand Azur Marmaris if you want an indulgent stay in Marmaris; it is a ‘spoil yourself’ hotel.
