Women's hockey: South Africa to crowd fund their way to Paris
Olympic participation crucial to keep interest in the sport alive in Rainbow Nation
BENGALURU: For the past four years, the South African women's hockey team players have kept their Paris Olympics dream alive by sacrificing their professional and education priorities, which according to co-captain Erin Christie, "pays their bills, which hockey doesn't."
The team, which qualified for the Olympics, winning the African leg of the qualifiers in November last year, has been putting in the hard yards but with an eye firmly on the federation's bank balance. As a non-professional sport, funds for hockey in the Rainbow Nation is limited and the team coached by Giles Bonnet is seeking to crowd fund its journey to Paris.
In Paris, clubbed in Group B along Australia, Argentina, Great Britain, Spain and the United States, South Africa, ranked 18th in the world, are the lowest ranked team in their group.
While a crowd funding programme is currently underway, the team hasn't reached the target but that hasn't stopped the players from giving their all for the preparations.
With the available funds they recently embarked on an Asian exposure tour which culminated in India over the weekend.
Speaking about the tour, Bonnet told TOI, "We chose Asia due to the relationships we had through Dr Wayne Lombard (assistant coach) and head coaches of the Indian and Chinese teams. This meant that we would be able to understand the environment. It was also very appealing due to the physical level of the competition in China (and like Asian teams' styles we may meet in Paris). In India we competed against the squad that currently competes in the Pro League and will in a few weeks play against teams in our pool in Paris, namely Argentina and Great Britain."
Bonnet, who has set his team a realistic target of finishing between 5-8 place, rued the lack of match practice due to poor funding.
"Funding has been our biggest challenge, we have had to withdraw from three events, which means about 30 test matches of experience have been lost to this group. On top of that we have not been able to train in a high-performance environment as frequently as we would have liked. It also has meant key consultants intricate to the success of the team have been forced to dilute their time and energy earning income elsewhere as they could not be paid for their work with the SA team," he explained.
Concurring with the head coach, Quanita Bobbs, the co-captain, pointed out, "Being a nonprofessional sport in South Africa, we will always have the stumbling block of finances and we try our best to work around the limited resources."
The lack of financial support puts a lot of strain on our program and we do not necessarily get to do all the preparation we would like. We have been able to prepare well but the next phase is very crucial. We are still hopeful we will be able to get funds to continue with the preparations," added the digital marketing professional.
While the South Africans, who played a five-match Test series against the Indian team which failed to make the Paris cut, are low on financial resources, they are high on spirit and purpose.
"Paris Olympics means a lot for the hockey community in South Africa because it is a very popular sport at the school level. The women's team going to Paris allows the younger generation to dream big. We are going to the Olympics and we want the generation after us to believe they too can compete at the highest level," stated Erin, who works in a tech company.
Says Quanita: "In order to make a diamond there must be a lot of pressure. The testing circumstances add an element of beauty to our journey but it is amazing to see this group of players choose the journey despite the lack of funding and all the stumbling blocks. We have made the decision to make this journey and that is what makes this group special," she said.
With crowd funding still in progress on various platforms, the team is confident that people across the globe will loosen their purses to help them live their dream.
