It’s classic Star Trek baddies against classic Star Trek good guys in the latest trailer for final season of Picard , which brings the show to its inevitable Star Trek: The Next Generation reunion plot line.

The season’s story appears to kick off with a distress call from Picard’s old flame and former chief medical officer Beverly Crusher, but of course there are galaxy-wide stakes here as well.

Picard mainstays Patrick Stewart, Jeri Ryan, and Michelle Hurd return in season 3 for their usual roles, while Brent Spiner will pick up his fourth discrete character in the show’s history by reprising Lore, a warped prototype of Next Generation ’s android officer, Data. Joining the main cast are pretty much all the TNG mainstays — LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, and Marina Sirtis — as well as Pulp Fiction ’s Amanda Plummer, as the seemingly new villain, Vadic. The trailer reveals that Todd Stashwick and Ed Speleers also join the cast.

Also , and this is wild, three decades after his two appearances on Star Trek, Daniel Davis is back to play Professor Moriarty. You know, the sentient hologram version of the fictional character Geordie accidentally created that one time ? That Moriarty.

Picard season 3 will premiere on Paramount Plus on Feb. 16, running for 10 weekly episodes.

Chestnut is playing Ensign Sidney La Forge, the eldest daughter of Geordi La Forge (famously played by LeVar Burton)and helmsman of the U.S.S. Titan, while Mica Burton (LeVar Burton’s real-life daughter), is taking on the part of Ensign Alandra La Forge, Geordi La Forge’s youngest daughter who works alongside her father.

The final season of “ Star Trek: Picard ” premieres on Thursday, Feb. 16 on Paramount+. New episodes of the 10-episode-long season will drop weekly on Thursdays.

The Saturday “Picard” panel at New York Comic Con featured Stewart and cast members LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis and Brent Spiner, as well as executive producers Alex Kurztman, Terry Matalas and Rod Roddenberry.

Stewart, Burton, Dorn, Frakes, McFadden, Sirtis, Spiner, Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd star in “Picard,” which is produced by CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.

'Star Trek: Picard' Season 3 Trailer Shows the 'Next Generation' Crew Searching for Beverly Crusher

'Star Trek: Picard' returns for the third and final season in February 2023.

Happy Star Trek Day, indeed! The long-awaited trailer for Star Trek: Picard Season 3 is finally here and we are ready to boldly go on one last adventure with Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). Season 3 of the revival series sees the return of The Next Generation cast members Gates McFadden , Jonathan Frakes , Marina Sirtis , Michael Dorn , LeVar Burton , and Brent Spiner . Alongside the much anticipated TNG reunion, Picard regulars Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd also return for the show's third and final season.

We got our first look at Picard Season 3 during San Diego Comic-Con, with a new teaser featuring the returning cast sporting their new looks and teasing lines from the upcoming episodes. Spiner, however, was absent from the initial teaser and remains absent from this one. With most of the cast reprising their roles from TNG, Spiner is set to play a new character given that Data's story ended in Picard Season 1. The new trailer, released today, features a fresh look at the rest of the returning cast. The trailer opens with a chilling message from Beverly Crusher (McFadden) calling out to Picard for help from across the galaxy as her ship is boarded by a mysterious new threat. From there, Picard calls upon Will Riker (Frakes) to help him assemble the whole gang to go after Beverly. The trailer also reveals a new look at Seven of Nine (Ryan) as commander of the USS Titan — the ship that Riker captained after leaving the Enterprise, yes, there are tears in my eyes.

Picard serves as an anthology series of sorts with each season telling a contained story. Season 1 caught up with Picard 18 years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis and saw the retired Starfleet admiral literally bet his life on protecting a synthetic lifeform named Soji. The first season also saw the return of Spiner's Data as the beloved AI's consciousness sought out a mortal existence. Meanwhile, Season 2 flung Picard and his new friends back in time to 2024 as the omnipotent trickster Q ( John De Lancie ) returned to teach Picard one final lesson. Season 3 is set to reunite the crew of the Enterprise-D for the first time in 20 years, as they band together for one last mission: the search for Beverly Crusher.

Appearing at SDCC, McFadden teased a thrilling storyline for fan-favorite Beverly Crusher, saying, "I think it's the best stuff my character's ever had on a Star Trek show." McFadden also hinted at the unresolved romantic tension still hanging in the air between Picard and Crusher saying, "there's a lot of unexpected things that happen, there's a lot of unresolved issues between Picard and Crusher." By the looks of this teaser, those issues are finally (hopefully) going to be addressed.

Star Trek: Picard is produced by CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. Alex Kurtzman, Akiva Goldsman, Terry Matalas, Stewart , Heather Kadin, Aaron Baiers, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Doug Aarniokoskim, and Dylan Massin all serve as executive producers for Season 3. Seasons 1 and 2 of Star Trek: Picard are available to stream now on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 is set to hit Paramount+ on February 16, 2023. Check out the new trailer for the final season down below:

'Hello, beautiful!' Picard gets the Next Generation crew back together in season 3 teaser

See Jonathan Frakes, LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Gates McFadden, and Marina Sirtis reunited.

new star trek picard season 3 trailer

The Enterprise crew of Star Trek: The Next Generation is beaming back up for Star Trek: Picard .

The first teaser trailer with actual footage from the third and final season of Patrick Stewart 's spin-off series was unveiled Thursday as part of Star Trek Day. (A previous sneak peek released at San Diego Comic-Con gave us a glimpse of the returning players in character.) The new promo offers looks at Jonathan Frakes, LeVar Burton , Michael Dorn , Gates McFadden, and Marina Sirtis joining Picard stars Stewart, Jeri Ryan , and Michelle Hurd.

Brent Spiner, another veteran of Next Generation , is also making a return to Picard season 3, but he's absent from the teaser trailer.

"It's not a reunion," Stewart said during a Q&A on the Star Trek Day stage. "It is an essential gathering of all the most important elements of Star Trek: The Next Generation in order to do what they do best."

The footage gives us a little more information about how the gang gets back together.

Crusher (McFadden) sends a distress message to Jean-Luc Picard (Stewart). "We need your help," she says. Now, once again, the admiral is need of a ship, as he discusses with his old pal Riker (Frakes).

"I can't ask you to put yourself in danger," Picard tells him.

"Since when?" a cheeky Riker replies. "Jean Luc, wherever you go, we go."

That's when we get snapshots of his old crew from the U.S.S. Enterprise: Geordi La Forge (Burton), Worf (Dorn), and Deanna Troi (Sirtis). The starship they end up finding is a new one for Star Trek , the U.S.S. Titan, which is now commanded by Seven of Nine (Ryan), donning full Starfleet uniform. "Hello, beautiful," Riker says as he gazes upon their chariot.

Hurd also shared a brief tease of Raffi's season 3 arc during the Q&A. "Raffi's gonna have quite the adventure this season because we're going to explore… the criminal underbelly of that world," she said.

Star Trek Day also brought word that season 3 of Picard will launch Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023, on Paramount+. The season will feature 10 episodes. Watch the new teaser above.

Final Star Trek: Picard Season 3 trailer adds two surprising characters

The biggest Star Trek season yet still has a lot of secrets to reveal...

Final art for 'Picard' Season 3.

The nostalgic reunion of The Next Generation has a few party crashers. Although Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard will feature the return of all seven main cast members from TNG and reunite the bridge crew of Enterprise-D , the final trailer for the show reveals two new faces. Here’s what these surprising character additions might mean, plus what to expect from Season 3 of Picard , dropping on February 16, 2023, on Paramount+ . No spoilers ahead.

Patrick Stewart, Gates McFadden, Michael Dorn, Jeri Ryan, and Michelle Hurd speak on stage during TC...

Patrick Stewart, Gates McFadden, Michael Dorn, Jeri Ryan, and Michelle Hurd speak on stage during TCA Paramount+ on January 9, 2023.

For all its ups and downs, Season 2 of Star Trek: Picard resolved most of its plot threads, leaving the further adventures of Jean-Luc Picard open to all sorts of possibilities. We last saw him, relatively happy, at his vineyard in France, embarking on a new romance with Laris ( Orla Brady ), who has been confirmed to return in Season 3. Raffi (Michelle Hurd) is also back for Season 3, along with Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) reprising her role from the previous seasons of Picard , and of course, Star Trek: Voyager .

However, a huge chunk of characters exclusive to the first two seasons of Picard will not appear in Season 3, for a variety of reasons. At the end of Season 2, Rios (Santiago Cabrera) elected to remain in the 21st century, while Dr. Jurati (Alison Pill) became a new, benevolent type of Borg Queen . Elnor (Evan Evagora) died, was brought back to life, and was also a hologram for a hot second. Meanwhile, Kore ( Isa Briones) was recruited by Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) to become a time-skipping Traveler. Isa Briones’ other character, the Synth Soji is still alive, but will likely not appear in Season 3 of Picard at all.

So, with all these departures, Season 3 of Picard will include all members of the main cast of The Next Generation , including Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes), Worf (Michael Dorn), Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis), Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) and Brent Spiner in a role that has not yet been disclosed, though the New York Comic Con trailer teased he is playing Lore, Data’s evil twin brother. That said, Brent Spiner has played more than one role in Star Trek, many, many times before. So, don’t assume anything . And, in the trailer, it’s not clear exactly what’s going on with Spiner at all . Though, the way he speaks to Geordi saying “That’s human nature, pal!” is certainly closer to Lore than Data.

And yet, with all of those names, we’re still getting new characters in Picard Season 3! As revealed in the final trailer — aired on January 29, 2023, during the AFC Championship Game on CBS and Paramount+ — two brand new faces are joining the cast. But, if you’re a fan of genre TV, you’ll recognize both of these guys right away.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Final Trailer

The final trailer doubles-down on much of what has already been revealed about Season 3. Much of the action will take place on the USS Titan , with Picard and his allies battling a mysterious villain named Vadic. Previously revealed in 2022, this villain is played by Amanda Plummer, daughter of Christopher Plummer, famous to Trek fans for his role as the Shakespeare-quoting Klingon villain, Chang in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991). Showrunner Terry Matalas has even compared the feeling of Picard Season 3 to The Undiscovered Country , calling it “game-changing” and will “feel like an event in Star Trek history.”

In the new trailer, the stakes feel huge, closer to a movie than a regular season of a new Trek show. And, because the trailer closes with the TNG crew, all together again, it feels momentous and big, and yes, game-changing. But, there are a lot of mysteries here. Why is Moriarty there? Why is he calling everyone “old warriors?” How does Raffi fit in? And just why are the crew on the USS Titan ?

On top of all of this, the game-changing aspects also include two brand-new characters. But who are they? Like Vadic, these two are shrouded in secrecy. In fact, their names haven’t even been revealed!

Ed Speleers

Ed Speleers

Picard Season 3 new characters

According to Paramount, and as evidenced in the trailer, Picard Season 3 will also feature Ed Speleers and Todd Stashwick. Fans of Outlander will recognize Speleers, while 12 Monkeys diehards will remember Stashwick. ( Picard showrunner Terry Matalas also brought on 12 Monkeys alum James Callis for Picard Season 2 in a pivotal role.)

Todd Stashwick

Todd Stashwick

Not much has been officially revealed about the new roles, only these details from Paramount: Ed Speleers will “appear as a series regular who aids Beverly Crusher’s medical efforts on worlds Starfleet has forgotten.” Meanwhile, Todd Stashwick “will also appear in a recurring role as captain of the U.S.S. Titan .” In the trailer, Stashwick’s character gives Riker and Picard a decent amount of ribbing about their colorful past. Meanwhile, Speleers’ character has a phaser on Riker at some point!

In the final art for Picard Season 3, Ed Speleers is part of the regular cast, indicating a huge role for him this season. With the premiere of Picard Season 3 just a few weeks away, it should be clear that these ten episodes are hiding much more than has been revealed. If you think you know what to expect from Picard Season 3 — think again.

Note: A Previous version of this article suggested that Elnor had remained dead in the alternate timeline. This was incorrect.

Picard Season 3 hits Paramount+ on February 16, 2023.

Featuring Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) fighting off aliens with a Starfleet phaser rifle, Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) conspiring in a dark bar, and Commander Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) welcoming the leading  Next Gen men aboard her new  USS Titan starship, there’s a LOT happening in this new teaser!

Also seen in brief clips are a Starfleet building getting destroyed by some kind of energy beam, plus brief glimpses of Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis), Worf (Michael Dorn), Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton), and Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd) — and Raffi will be exploring the “criminal underbelly” of the 25th century, Hurd shared on the  Star Trek Day stage.

It was also announced that  Star Trek: Picard Season 3 will debut on Paramount+ early next year, on February 16, 2023.

new star trek picard season 3 trailer

With Trek  canon-minded showrunner Terry Matalas leading the final season of  Picard, there’s no need to worry that  Seven’s new Titan is  not the same starship which Will Riker commanded in the 2380s — as  Star Trek: Lower Decks  has established Riker’s  Titan to be a  Luna -class vessel, based upon the original starship design created in the mid-2000s for the tie-in novel series. (Several Luna -class ships were also seen among the assembled Starfleet armada in “The Star Gazer.” )

As Picard Season 3 takes place in the early 2400s, this new USS Titan design is a successor to Captain Riker’s first command — the “neo-Constitution-class Titan- A,” as showrunner Matalas described it to the TrekCore team on the Star Trek Day red carpet today — featuring a round saucer section and warp nacelles similar to last season’s  USS Stargazer  design.

Star Trek: Picard – Breaking Down The Season 3 Trailer

Exploring all the major detailed revealed by the new trailer, and who these familiar faces might be.

With Picard season 3 hitting the small screen in January next year, there has been a slow build-up of excitement for the return of the original Next Generation cast to reprise their roles. The new trailer has just come out, and is filled with an incredible amount of information, action, and more returning characters than was expected, making fans around the world more and more excited about the show's release.

With the dramatic final episode of season 2, there's a lot up in the air, so many are excited to see what will happen. From previous teaser trailers, it has already been revealed that the old cast were reprising their roles, and that the series would somehow revolve around a distress call from Doctor Beverly Crusher , but with the new trailer, there’s a lot more information to unpack.

RELATED: How Does Star Trek's Holodeck Technology Work?

The trailer offers a good look at each of the beloved characters, with more screen time for each, including an apparently pacifist Worf much to the amusement of fans and TV trope followers . It also revealed the season's new villain, played by none other than Amanda Plummer from Pulp Fiction . She is set to play Vadic, a mysterious captain of the fantastically designed ( though Roddenberry rule-breaking ) warship Shrike, and seems to be setting a course for revenge on Picard and his old crew.

What connection this has specifically to the old TNG show is still unknown, but it’s likely it will relate to one of the many episodes of the fan-favorite series. From the trailer, she gives off the impression of a crazed character, but also shares a surprising similarity to Zorg from the cult classic The Fifth Element with a similar haircut and demeanor - a comparison that will either disappoint or excite fans, depending on their opinions on the fairly divisive film.

Most likely due to the showrunners trying to build as much hype as possible, and a fair amount of fan service, Vadic was the only real new face to appear in the new trailer, most of it directed at showing off the old cast of TNG and Picard , but most excitingly one of these faces revealed who Star Trek veteran Brent Spiner was going to play. So far, Spiner has appeared in both seasons of Picard managing to play two different characters with the common link of Data, who he also played.

It was reported early on he would be appearing in season 3 yet again, but as who was left a mystery. This was until his fairly dramatic reveal in the new trailer, showcasing the trademark furrowed brow of Lore - Data’s evil twin android. He first appeared in the season 1 episode “Datalore” and returned for three other episodes of TNG . He was a fantastic villain, the complete counter to Data, with highly unstable emotions and a huge god complex. While Data wanted to become more human , Lore thought he was much superior. What they are planning to do with the nefarious villain of old is not yet clear, but knowing Picard they will likely twist his story slightly, perhaps shifting his character onto their team.

The next familiar face didn’t have as much of an introduction, and for many who are not obsessive fans of the old shows they might have missed his significance. In the short clip, the aged face of Daniel Davis appears, in a Victorian-looking outfit, seemingly out of place next to his modern surroundings. He is reprising his role as the very well-received conflicted villain from TNG, as a character borrowed from another famous story: Professor James Moriarty.

Moriarty appeared as a semi-recurring character in the original show, as a holo-novel character that was given immense intelligence, and eventually gained sentience . He used this to take over the ship, but until now it was not entirely known what had become of him. How big a part he will play in the new season is still unknown, as this might have just been a ploy to raise hype and engage the fans. Two other characters who might have been missed are disability advocate Geordi LaForge ’s children, Ensign Signey LaForge and Ensign Alandra LaForge, who will be played by LeVar Burton’s actual daughter, Mica Burton.

As for the plot, not much is known, but from the information gained from the trailer it looks to be a combination of a rescue mission that reunites the old crew, and a life-threatening game of cat and mouse with a mysterious villain hell-bent on revenge. There also seems to be some kind of connection between the now silver fox Worf and Raffi, but again, there is no more information about this yet. Fans will just have to tune in on February 16th to see what new adventures are in store for Jean-Luc, as they venture into the final chapter of his story.

MORE: Exploring The Unusual Origins Of Star Trek's Character Names

new star trek picard season 3 trailer

John de Lancie doesn't think it was expected that season three of Star Trek: Picard would be so well-received

P roducing a television (or streaming) series is a gamble. There's no way to know if the show will be liked enough or watched enough to continue. The chance of cancellation always looms over practically every series (unless it's NCIS or Law and Order: SVU). Star Trek: Picard was always meant to be a three-season series so the producers knew the show was wrapping no matter how well received the final chapter would be. But, according to John de Lancie , in an interview he gave Trekmovie, [ via Comicbook ] he didn't think anyone expected season three to be as good as it was. So, obviously, the fan clamor for a spin-off must have come as a surprise as well.

The way de Lancie describes it, the powers-that-be had already decided on what the next series would be—Starfleet Academy. So there was no opening for Star Trek: Legacy.

"I don’t think that they expected that Season 3 was going to be as good and as well-received. They had already decided on another show. They were already moving in another direction. But it was certainly a really valiant and well-appreciated finale to The Next Generation.”John de Lancie

I find it hard to believe that the producers and the studio wouldn't have known how successful the final season of Picard would be since they were bringing back practically everyone from Star Trek: The Next Generation. That series has maintained its fanbase over the years, and seeing them all together again onscreen was a big draw. It was akin to announcing another movie with the cast. Had season three of Picard unfolded on the big screen, I have no doubt there would have been major numbers at the box office.

If no one was prepared for the success of the final season of Picard, then the door to a possibility of a spin-off shouldn't have even been opened. Though showrunner Terry Matalas has said the series finale wasn't intended to be a set-up for a spin-off, there's really no other way to interpret it the final scene. Q, who supposedly died in season two of Picard, appeared before Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), who just happens to be Admiral Picard's (Patrick Stewart) son with, essentially, a promise of troubles to come. That's quite a big carrot to dangle if there was never any intention of feeding the horse.

As of now, we don't have any news on Legacy, and with Star Trek moving forward with Starfleet Academy, it doesn't seem like it's on the studio's radar at present.

Screen Rant

Michael dorn wanted armin shimerman to play the ferengi worf kills in star trek: picard [updated].

Worf killed Sneed the Ferengi in Star Trek: Picard season 3, but Armin Shimerman says Michael Dorn suggested he play the Ferengi Worf slays.

TrekMovie.com verified with Armin Shimerman and Kitty Swink that Michael Dorn wanted Armin to play the Ferengi Worf kills in Star Trek: Picard season 3, not have Worf kill Quark specifically . TrekMovie 's article is here . Screen Rant 's original article erroneously interpreting Worf kills Quark is below.

  • Michael Dorn wanted to kill Quark, not Sneed, in Star Trek: Picard season 3, but Armin Shimerman shut down the idea.
  • Michael and Armin are friends in real life, making the request to kill Quark surprising to him.
  • Listen to TrekMovie's All Access Star Trek podcast to hear more from Shimerman, Kitty Swink, and Jonathan Frakes about this funny Trek tidbit.

Captain Worf (Michael Dorn) killed the Ferengi named Sneed (Aaron Stanford) in Star Trek: Picard season 3, but Armin Shimerman says it was Quark who Dorn wanted to kill instead. Dorn and Shimerman starred together in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine seasons 4-7. Although the Klingon warrior never liked the Ferengi bartender, in real life, Michael is good friends with Armin and his wife, Kitty Swink - which is why Dorn's request for Worf to murder Quark caught Shimerman off guard.

Appearing on TrekMovie 's All Access Star Trek podcast to promote Trek Against Pancreatic Cancer 's fundraising and walk at PanCAN PurpleStride, Armin Shimerman, Kitty Swink, and Jonathan Frakes (joined by Juan Carlos Coto), Kitty asked Armin to recount the story of Michael Dorn requesting Worf kill Quark in Star Trek: Picard season 3. Read their quotes and listen to the clip on TrekMovie 's X post below:

Armin Shimerman: Dorn called me up and said, ‘I’m doing an episode of Picard where I kill off a Ferengi. Wouldn’t it be great if it were you?’ I said no, it would not be great. I told him just to forget about that idea altogether. Kitty Swink: I gotta say, for all the times I’ve baked bread for Michael Dorn, that was really a sh****y thing for him to say. (laughs) Jonathan Frakes: I’m not sure he knew he was gonna cut his head off. Armin Shimerman: He knew that, he knew that. Because that’s what he said to me. Jonathan Frakes: But that Ferengi was based on on your Ferengi, and the tightrope you walked, all levity aside, to represent what Roddenberry thought was this despicable capitalist pig with huge ears, and yet be humorous, smart, charming, clever… all the qualities that Quark had and still be essentially a villain, and do it through rubber… It takes a special actor, which you are.

'Star Trek: Discovery' season 5 episode 3 'Jinaal' is a slow but steady affair

Humans have evidently evolved beyond the need for stairs in the 32nd century as teleportation has replaced the simple act of actually walking to places

Have you ever seen a single, more

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Star Trek: Discovery" season 5, episode 3

The latest installment of "Star Trek: Discovery" season 5 on Paramount Plus adds a little water – and possibly some fertilizer – to the various different story seeds sewn last week.

Entitled "Jinaal," the primary plot revolves around a revisit to the planet Trill and as you may recall, the last time we spent any length of time here was the episode " Forget Me Not " (S03, E04), which was not terrible. In fact, it was undeniable highlight of the third season, which itself had some of the best we've seen from "Discovery." Incidentally, that was first look at the Trill homeworld since " Star Trek: Deep Space Nine " episode "Equilibrium" (bizarrely, also S03, E04). (If you need a recap on how to watch Star Trek: Discovery, check out our Star Trek streaming guide for Paramount Plus .)

Watch Star Trek on Paramount Plus: Get a one month free trial

Curiously, in that episode "Forget Me Not," Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) was given a rare and welcome chance to shine and he does so once again in this episode as well. To briefly recap, Adira (Blu del Barrio) and her lover, a Trill named Gray (Ian Alexander), were aboard a generation ship way back when. They were both orphans, very much in love, and Gray had just received his symbiote when the ship was struck by an asteroid and everyone was ordered to evacuate. Unfortunately, Gray was fatally injured and the only way to save the symbiote was for Adira to join with it. And that's how it was for all of season three right up until the fourth season episode " Choose To Live " (S04, E03).

Then, after all of that, Gray Tal has his consciousness transferred out of Adira and into an artificial synth golem before heading back to Trill to complete all that monk-style studying. And now you're all caught up.

All this has happened before and all of it will happen again. And by the way, Captain Burnham is a Cylon…

While a trip back to Trill is nice, you can't help but start to wonder if this fifth and final season will end up a 10-episode long epilogue as it ties up all its loose ends, almost like season five of " Babylon 5 ."  Commander Jett Reno (Tig Notaro) pops up in this episode at last, which more or less just leaves Commander Nhan (Rachael Ancheril), whom we last saw in the episode " Rubicon " S04, E09, to make an appearance. Although Ancheril's IMDb page does currently say, "Coming up in 2024, Rachael will be seen again in 'Chucky' season three [and] 'Star Trek Discovery' for its final season," so who knows.

The big highlight this week was, as we alluded to above, Cruz's chance to stretch his acting chops just a little bit and he does not disappoint. The two biggest grumbles however, are the dialogue written by a writer who just saw "Lethal Weapon II" for the very first time and that the notion of teleporting around the place instead of just walking, has been taken to ludicrous extremes.

"Star Trek: Discovery" seems to be at peace with lifting from other IPs, sci-fi or otherwise. We've seen a nice " Close Encounters of the Third Kind " reference with mashed potato and we've even seen a fun nod to "Scooby-Doo," but these were all subtle. Then there was the extremely unsubtle " Die Hard " thing and then in " Scavengers " (S03, E06) the writers went  way  beyond homage and practically lifted a set piece directly from the 1987 movie "The Running Man." The premise was the same, the effect was the same and even the setting was practically identical.

This week's insight into what classic movie the Gen-Z writers of "Discovery" have recently discovered comes from a legendary scene with equally legendary dialogue between Sgt. Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Sgt. Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) during a rescue attempt after the latter learns that the toilet he's been sitting on has been rigged with a bomb in the first "Lethal Weapon" sequel. Lest we forget, this underrated action extravaganza also gave us Leo Getz and immortalized phrases like "diplomatik immunitee." and "but, but...you're blick."

Still, at least it was just a line or two of dialogue this time and not an entire set piece. My other main grumble with this episode as we mentioned above is the carefree abandon with which transporters are used. And I've touched upon this before. Despite beaming becoming a very common part of everyday life of the 32nd century, to the extent that folk use transporters instead of stairs and even to just change outfits, like we saw in the season four premiere episode — but the thing is, transporters kill you .

The creators of " Star Trek " have never officially confirmed that transporters kill you. However, solely based on the science, transporters do kill you. In simple terms, these teleportation devices scan every molecule in your body and briefly store them in the pattern buffer, while at the same time, the original body is to all intents and purposes, disintegrated. The transporter then converts the scanned copy into energy and beams the data stream to the desired location, where the body is rebuilt, from a sub-atomic level, using technology similar to a replicator. It's comparable in principle to a fax, except this fax machine destroys the original, to prevent duplication, although that has been known to happen.

The issue is essentially an existential one. Since our bodies are made up of identifiable matter, why won't transference of consciousness occur? What makes our consciousness so unique? What's the difference between an identical copy and you? If you were to put your copy into a different room that you hadn't been into, would you be able to see it? No. It's a perfect copy, but it's not you. There is a good article on Ars Technica that really goes into detail on this.

Still, all of this banter aside, this episode is not ... terrible. It is very evenly paced and that, despite the not-exactly edge-of-seat storyline, makes it bearable. Every sub-story seems to be given equal time and brief-but-enjoyable interplay between Lt. Tilly (Mary Wiseman) and Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) is fun. Plus, of course, we get to see the Trill homeworld again, which is nice.

In other "Star Trek" news, " Strange New Worlds " has been renewed for a fourth season, while " Lower Decks " will end with its previously announced upcoming fifth season, expected to air sometime this year. Creator Mike McMahan and executive producer Alex Kurtzman posted a statement on the Star Trek website: “While five seasons of any series these days seems like a miracle, it’s no exaggeration to say that every second we've spent making this show has been a dream come true. Our incredible cast, crew and artists have given you everything they have because they love the characters they play, they love the world we've built, and more than anything we all love, love, love Star Trek."

Where once there were four shows airing simultaneously, now there is only one left,

Meanwhile, "Strange New Worlds" is currently in production on its third season, which is set to debut in 2025. It seems that all of this combined with the fact that "Section 31" ended up as a movie , casts doubt over the future of the Starfleet Academy spin-off and hopefully signals the end of the idiotic idea of "Star Trek: Legacy." Perhaps Paramount should look to cancel other ludicrous endeavors like the proposed Picard movie instead of cancelling decent shows in their efforts to tighten purse strings.

The fifth and final season of "Star Trek: Discovery" and every episode of every "Star Trek" show — with the exception of "Star Trek: Prodigy" — currently streams exclusively on Paramount Plus in the US while "Prodigy" has found a new home o n Netflix.

Internationally, the shows are available on  Paramount Plus  in Australia, Latin America, the UK and South Korea, as well as on Pluto TV in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland on the Pluto TV Sci-Fi channel. They also stream on  Paramount Plus  in Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. In Canada, they air on Bell Media's CTV Sci-Fi Channel and stream on Crave.

Then they play some audio from Tony’s recent interview with Carlos Cisco, co-writer of this week’s  Star Trek: Discovery  episode, “Mirrors.” After that, they give “Mirrors” a full review; Tony liked it more than Laurie, but they both enjoyed the Moll and L’ak backstory. After a quick reminder about the PanCAN Purple Stride walk happening this weekend, the wrap up the pod with a Paramount business update courtesy of The Town and a recent interview with makeup legend Michael Westmore on The 7th Rule .

Preview ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Episode 505 With New Images, Trailer And Clip From “Mirrors”

I hear you on missing stuff. “The Ultimate Computer” made the rounds on one of the legacy channels last night. In the opening scenes, McCoy, Kirk and Spock make their way to engineering to see Dr. Daystrom. After some conversation, McCoy starts going off on the tech, Daystrom looks square at him and asks “who are you”? In all the times I’ve seen this episode over the decades, Daystrom throwing shade at McCoy had never registered on me…..

I can hear it in William Marshall’s voice as I read it! Hey, it’s always fun to discover something new in TOS episodes I’ve seen a thousand times. There’s a great scene in “Wink of an Eye” where Kirk is asking McCoy if he’s going crazy and Nurse Chapel is totally eavesdropping in the background… it’s so funny! I think I only noticed it for the first time a few years ago.

Great podcast per usual!

I agree with most of the thoughts about Discovery and per usual agree with Laurie this was the weakest of the season so far. There were just waaay too many missed opportunities, not very much happening and clear it was very much shot on a budget.

But it is cool to see the Breen back. That was a big plus.

But I really enjoyed the section where you guys talked about how Discovery was originally trying to avoid canon it’s first year compared to today and be more its own thing. I have been saying this forever now and believe Discovery was originally just a reboot but simply not called that. Everything about that first season just felt so off from Trek of old.

They were clearly trying to reboot the franchise for a different time and audience and move away from the old style and canon of the classic shows.

But I think they really underestimated how much fans wanted the old style and canon back and panicked once the complaints flowed in and why we got Spock and Pike the next season and Picard was announced after that.

I have also said this before as well but if Discovery was a bigger success than the other shows would be in its image, both look and style. Instead they been running from it with the other shows.

SNW is a direct spin off and yet it feels and acts like the Roddenberry/Berman era of shows being episodic again, A and B stories and doing alien/anomaly/crisis of the week. There is not a single episode (OK maybe the musical lol) that couldn’t fit into any of the old shows TOS-ENT.

It is ironic the new era tried to be something different from Berman Trek just to basically be that again with shows like LDS, Prodigy, Picard season 3 and SNW. It just proves A. nostalgia is always a strong tool and B. Old fans ultimately still control this franchise for better or for worse.

My personal take on SNW is that they’re not getting the canon balance right either. They rely too heavily on TOS instead of forging their own path more. It’s why I’ve been so happy with Discovery’s approach this season, particularly when they take something we don’t know a lot about but have heard of and then add to it. SNW has all the ingredients to tell brand-new stories with new aliens and characters, and I hope they start doing more of that and less leaning back into TOS.

Oh yeah fully agree. I think you know my feelings on SNW and while I certainly like the show it’s canon issues really frustrates me and I really think they are overdoing the TOS fan service.

But I was never surprised about the latter. I actually predicted Kirk would show up on the first season finale way before we were told Kirk would be on the show itself. I figured they were going to make it more a TOS ‘prequel’ than a Pike show and sadly proven right.

But I truly truly hope we don’t get a TOS show when SNW is over. They may do it but I really hope they do something different and more original if there is a spin off. I just have zero interest in reliving the show and so far not a fan of Wesley’s Kirk at all, so even less so.

As I’m sure you know, I’m with you on that one!

It is weird that Discovery was trying to evade Trek canon when the whole first season plot revolved around a war with the Klingons, followed by a journey to the Mirror Universe. The central character is Spock’s adopted sister, and because of that we encounter Sarek and Amanda. Also Harry Mudd is prominent in the season, and the season ends with the appearance of the Enterprise.

RIght? It was a weird mish-mosh of what they leaned into (as the saying goes) and what they wanted to avoid. I will say I loved the choices they made with Amanda.

Hi Tony and Laurie. I felt compelled to thank you both for the podcast. You put a lot of work into each episode despite currently not getting much in the way of feedback or comments. I can’t help but notice that in general, comments across the Discovery articles seem quite low in terms of numbers compared to previous shows. In particular, Picard S3 where for example, some episode reviews garnered +600 comments, so many in fact, that I could only get round to reading a fraction of them. Perhaps Discovery is more niche than previous Trek series.

While I did enjoy last weeks episode, watching Discovery for me still feels a bit like watching The Cage. It’s labelled Start Trek and has Trek iconography scattered throughout and yet IMO it lacks the warmth and connection I felt towards other series.

Thank you, Scott! Appreciate the comment. It’s true I am greedy for comments and we don’t seem to get a lot of them, or reviews on Apple. It sometimes feels like we are just out there in the void! I am always interested to hear what people think of the podcast, what they’d like us to do more of or less of.

I would really like the Shuttlepod back on a regular basis. It was cathartic for me because I felt that it aligned with my view of Star Trek in general, whereas with All Access, I like you both and enjoy listening to you, but I’m frequently disagreeing with your opinions on these shows and the state of the franchise.

So would I! They have a lot of schedules to wrangle. We do try to have them on our podcast whenever they’re free.

The irony for me Laurie is that I actually do try to post in every podcast discussion and there is always so much I want to say. But a lot of the times I don’t post until a few days later since I don’t always have time to listen to it right away. But when I do it looks like everyone has already moved on so I just don’t always bother.

There was a podcast you guys made maybe a month ago that I had so much to say I literally wanted to make a five point post to counter all the discussions you guys said in it lol. But by the time I could sit down and write it it was nearly a week later and I thought what was the point when there were only a few posts and I figured no one would even see it by then so didn’t bother.

It is obviously true there are fewer posts for the podcast but I think mostly due to the fact everything you guys talk about are usually things that has already been discussed ad nauseam on the boards like the latest episode review. You guys are going over news that’s already been posted so people have had their say about it and usually not a lot more to add; unless there is a specific point made in the podcast itself that’s been highlighted for the first time.

But I truly love listening to it and listen to every one of them. I make a comment about 60% of the time but as said the discussions dry up so quickly here that after a few days it just doesn’t seem worth it unfortunately.

But you guys definitely have advid listeners who enjoy listening to your thoughts. I’m certainly one of them especially since I agree with nearly all your thoughts lol.

So glad to hear it. Obviously we talk about stories that are already up on the site, so the discussions are already happening. I get it! I just always hope that if people like things we do or don’t like things we do, they’ll let us know. (Like the way we review shows; is it bothersome that we just jump all over the place and don’t go from beginning to end?)

Hi Laurie. How about you and Tony team up with the Shuttle pod crew to do an end of season Discovery review and also a look back at the series; highs, lows and legacy. By the way I totally agree about your SNW comments. I really enjoy the show and think the cast is terrific but would like them to explore new ground far more than they currently do.

Most of them don’t watch Discovery! But we will definitely do that topic when the show is done, and hopefully Matt can join us for it.

I’m very surprised to hear that your colleagues (and for me great podcasters) don’t watch Discovery. I have to say that if such knowledgeable and learned ST experts don’t find it worth watching (and I’m sure for their own very good reasons), what chance did the show really have. I know that my UK Trek family have long since bailed, most exiting at the end of S3.

“Most of them don’t watch Discovery.”

Wow that sort of says it all when dedicated Trek fans who have their own podcast don’t bother to watch the show. I could be wrong but I don’t think Mark Altman watches it either or he just doesn’t talk about it on his podcast.

A lot of people have been pointing out the lower discussions about Discovery this season. It really is noticable especially compared to the shows first three seasons which were much more active to say the least.

And yes compared to Picard season 3 is night and day. I went and looked up that seasons episode 5 discussion as a comparison and that got around 450 comments vs Discovery’s current episode 5 that only has around 110 comments currently. And what’s crazy is that is the highest number of posts so far all season.

So yeah it’s definitely a lack of discussions here and all across the bigger sites as well. It doesn’t mean people aren’t watching it obviously but it’s also clear there is much less passion for the show today, especially one that is ending very soon.

Good points. I’ll be interested to see the streaming viewing figures if they are made available.

What we have found is that there are some people who come rushing to all the Discovery posts to tell us how much they hate it, and we are being more vigilant about getting rid of those comments. If someone watches the show and hates it, fair! But there are a lot of comments from people who just want to shit on its existence (and clearly aren’t watching it), so those go, as well as anything racist or homophobic, which obviously happens a lot with this show too.

Yeah I understand but I don’t think that alone is the reason for less posts either because as I said it’s down everywhere else I post and lurk. That includes TrekCre, Reddit, Trek BBS etc. It’s a very obvious gap. Reddit is the more obvious because those posts usually go on the thousands when an episode is reviewed.

For example the latest episode Mirrors has around 400 posts which sounds decent but every episode review in season 4 usually had double that or more. Some got into the thousands.

Maybe it’s just been off the air too long. It has been two years.

Could be. I saw a Tweet from Patrick Kwok-Choon (Rhys) saying they filmed it so long ago, he doesn’t even remember what happened!

In his defense: It’s not like he’s getting a lot of particularly memorable material ;-)

I agree with Tony about them leaving the map… When Burnham left her quarters she just left the map on the desk, and I was thinking just that. I mean, what if the cleaning lady breaks it or just moves it somewhere. They do that, they break things and don’t tell you, figuring you won’t notice. They have to think about those things.
