A Day in Port Fairy

port fairy tour

Explore Griffith Island

Find accommodation, things to do.

Plan for an early morning visit to Griffith’s Island to watch the sunrise over the spectacular Port Fairy Lighthouse, at the eastern tip of the island, a short 20 min walk from Martin’s Point Car Park. This iconic beacon was built c.1859 of local bluestone and still sends its light out to sea today. The Island was named Griffith’s Island after John Griffiths, who established Port Fairy’s whaling industry on the island in the 1830’s. As you wander the pathways to the lighthouse keep an eye out for native birdlife and wildlife including the black wallaby (Wallabia bicolor). Continue around the island enjoying the rugged coastline and the small-protected coves.  Keep to the walking tracks which traverse through the low lying scrub, keeping a careful eye out for nesting birds, including the shearwaters that migrate from the northern hemisphere each year to their nesting burrows.

Return to the Griffith’s Island car park and head into town to indulge in a cooked breakfast at Bank St & Co, at 28 Bank St, Port Fairy. Set up by some local lads, this smart cafe has a refined decor of polished floorboards, subway tiles and an open fireplace and features an extensive breakfast and tempting lunch menu ranging from crispy Portland squid with apple slaw, to beef brisket burgers and gourmet toasties.

Walk around town

While in the main town browse the boutique Shopping Precinct of Port Fairy and meet the passionate traders who have fashioned this village into a style in its own right. Here, shopping is enjoyable and entertaining and a touch quirky. The charming, old-world main streets house a dynamic collection of home wares, antiques, body care products and ladies fashion boutiques which offer fledgling labels, known brands and eclectic styles. Pick-up a unique gift for that special loved one or a classy keepsake. Discover your next favourite read in one of two bookshops or simply browse to your heart’s content.

It is a good idea to also head down Bank Street and pay a visit to the friendly staff at the Port Fairy Information Centre to collect a town map, and a self -guided walking map including the Art Map, the Maritime & Shipwreck Heritage Walk and the Historical Buildings Heritage Walk.

We suggest if the weather is fine that you commence with the Maritime & Shipwreck Heritage Walk, which will take you to Battery Hill and East Beach to discover the history of the Port and its iconic features including Battery Hill, the Powder Magazine and the Historic Lifeboat Station. The guide will also have you passing a memorial to the steamer Casino and the sites of 17 shipwrecks that unfortunately ran aground along East Beach. Or you may choose to complete the Historical Buildings Heritage Walk which will provide a tour around the town historical buildings which can be conducted either on foot or by car if the weather is inclement.  Either choice will bring you to the historic River Precinct where you may choose to stop for lunch at the famed Fisherman’s Wharf in Port Fairy. It is a must see for all first time visitors. You will find opportunities for lunch here at the Fisherman’s Wharf or make you way back into the town centre for a bite to eat.

Treat yourself

Just a little further down the road you may like to drop into the Port Fairy Day Spa. The Port Fairy Day Spa Offers a comprehensive range of spa, beauty and therapeutic treatments designed to re-balance and de-stress your mind and body. You may choose to experience the peaceful ambiance and pure indulgence of one of the spa packages, either way your time at the spa will be one of total indulgent bliss.

If time allows, and the History Centre Museum is open, drop into the Museum and Archives centre of Port Fairy. The Museum and Archives feature changing exhibitions covering various aspects of Port Fairy’s past.  They sell a number of local history publications and offer a wealth of information on the history of the town, its colourful past, historical people and places.

Complete the evening with dinner at the Merrijig Inn, the oldest Inn in Victoria, located in the heart of Port Fairy’s historic village offering a daily written menu of seasonal fare sourced, where possible, from the south-west countryside. A well-crafted wine list features local, regional and international winemakers who craft their wines using biodynamic and organic practices.

And then come full circle at the right time of the year, with a return journey to Griffith’s Island to witness the Short-tailed Shearwaters or Mutton Birds at dusk, one of Port Fairy’s most spectacular summer sights. Each year, towards the end of September the Short-tailed Shearwaters arrive on Griffiths Island as part of their annual migration from their far flung journey in the Northern Hemisphere, the Aleutian Islands near Alaska. Following the preparation of their nests, and laying and incubating of their eggs in January, the birds leave again for the Northern Hemisphere in April.  The birds will spend the summer months here raising their young, fishing during the day, returning with food for their young and then set off again in mid-April. So, at dusk join the many birdwatchers who are certainly in for a treat from late September until April as the Short-tailed Shearwaters return daily to their burrows on Griffith’s Island – certainly a memorable ending to your day in Port Fairy.

21 Best Things To Do In Port Fairy

Port Fairy Australia, is a beautifully preserved 19th century shipping port, where history can be seen at every turn.

This added to the artsy shops, surfer crowds, and nearby nature reserves, makes Port Fairy an unforgettable holiday destination.

Here are some of our favourite Port Fairy things to do.

1) Relax At Port Fairy Beach

View of Port Fairy Beach with ocean, blue skies and trees.

The Port Fairy beaches are a must-visit while you’re in town. Spend a day relaxing by the sea, while taking in some of the best sights of the Shipwreck Coast.

Visit East Beach Port Fairy, with a 5.8 kilometre long arc of fine sand, it’s a great place to relax with a barbeque or a sunbed for the day.

East Beach is located in Port Fairy Bay and is patrolled at weekends in the summer months, but avoid the northern end of the beach as rip currents can be strong.

Pea Soup Beach

Pea Soup Beach Port Fairy is a pristine and beautiful beach that is also clothing optional. Less crowded than East Beach it has clear water, easy access, and is safe for swimming.

At around 1 kilometre in length, it provides beautiful views out to the ocean. It’s also known as Pea Soup Beach No 1 and is right next to Southcombe Beach.

Killarney Beach

For something a little more out of the way head out of town to Killarney Beach, it’s a lot quieter, especially in the summer months.

Killarney Beach is dog friendly, and is popular for whiting fishing, safe snorkelling, and for paddling in a natural lagoon.

Visitors are mainly from the nearby Killarney Beach Caravan Park, and it tends to attract an older crowd as well as dog owners.

2) Spot Birds On Griffiths Island Port Fairy

Tourist watching the water cascade over Hopkins Falls in Victoria Australia.

At an impressive 90 metres wide, Hopkins Falls is around 30 minutes from Port Fairy. There are excellent views to be had at either the viewing platform or at the foot of the falls.

It’s called Thankang-poonart in the native Kirrae Whurung language meaning ‘eels bite the stones’.

Battery Hill was established in the late 1800s, along with several other fortifications along the coast of the Southern Ocean. Back on board we continue our journey along the Great Ocean Road stopping at Apollo Bay for lunch (own cost). After lunch we continue our journey to Port Campbell for afternoon refreshments before viewing 12 Apostles and Loch Ard George. Our journey continues along the Coastal Park for about 32km taking us past towns between Peterborough and Warrnambool. Along this stretch you will see lookout areas with parking provided at the Bays at Martyrs, the Bay of Islands, Three Mile beach and Childers Cove. Your coach will endeavour to stop at one parking areas available as we pass through Port Fairy. Warrnambool and down to Cape Otway, is known as the Shipwreck Coast. Many water vessels ran aground in the 1800’s and early 1900’s, due to ferocious weather conditions and the rocky coastline. We’ll book into our motel to freshen up and relax before dinner.

Day Two: Warrnambool Sightseeing (B,D)

After breakfast we commence our morning boarding the coach heading to Warrnambool. Here we will so some artistic sight-seeing, starting with ‘Our story mural’ by artist Claire Foxton. Claire Foxton created the ‘Our story’ mural in October 2018. Sitting proudly on the West Warrnambool Water Tower, this stunning piece profiles the journey of the three local immigrants and former refugees. Through exploring the challenges and successes of various migrants’ groups in this region. The story celebrates the rich and diverse social tapestry of the Great South Coast. We will wander down past the wonderful wall art in Liebug Street. Here you will also find a nice little café or some morning teas. Lunch today will be t the RSL (own cost). After lunch it is time to take a cruise along the Hopkins River with tea and coffee included. After our cruise, we will make our way to Lake Pertobe Maze. A mural bonsai. The Lake Pertobe maze is looking better than ever thanks to four renowned street artists and a cohort of community. The workshops culminated in the repainting of the iconic maze with the assistance of local artists Nathan Pye, Jim Maglaras, Jessica Meggs, plus 150 kids were also invited to grab a spray can to add some colour.

Day Three: Portland (B,D)

After breakfast, today we will make our way to Portland. Firstly, we will take a town tour aboard the Portland cable tram. Spectacular scenery, historic attractions, knowledgeable volunteers, an enjoyable ride for about 7.3km meandering along Portland’s spectacular foreshore. Then onto some historical sites, such as the Bluestone Municipal complex and old inns, which date back to 1842. The lighthouse, Mary Mckillop drive. Now you will have some free time in Portland to visit the local area and to buy some lunch. After lunch we will visit Bridgewater Bay, with views of the rugged coastline. A short walk will take you to the blowholes and Petrified Forest, once thought to be the remains of a Moonah Forest smothered by a large sand dune, creating unusual sandstone formations.

Day Four: Port Fairy – via Warrnambool – Home (B)

After breakfast, our time in Port Fairy. Firstly, some time to enjoy the local boutique shops before boarding the coach for a town tour including the lighthouse and the Port Fairy Historic Museum – Submerged Shipwreck Exhibition. Port fairy Lifeboat Shed (Maritime Artefacts) In early 1800 a boat called ‘The Fairy’ chose this tiny bay on the mouth of the Moyne River to shelter from a storm. Steeped in charm, there is also a historic Celtic influence in the architecture of this town the restaurants and a flourishing arts scene: open studios and galleries scatter the streets and are linked into a delightful art walk. Although seen by many as an overnight stop, Port Fairy is a perfect place from which to explore the famous and somewhat notorious shipwreck coast and surrounding towns. Enjoy sometime on the pier where you can enjoy some refreshments overlooking the harbour, enjoy lunch of fish and chips sitting on the deck or a short walk to the local cafes. Back on board the coach we make our way home via Warrnambool. We will take a slight detour toward the WOMBAT BRIDGE MURAL.

This work was created in May 2018 as a practice for another piece commissioned by the Warrnambool City Council for ‘Little Liebig Street’. Artist Jimmi Buscombe drew the wombat seemingly burrowing through the Otway Road Rails overpass with chalk, and only intended for it to be temporary. Phil Hoy, a former Warrnambool City Council graffiti removal contractor, liked the artwork so much that he applied an automotive clear coat to it, essentially making it permanent. Jimmi, unaware of Phil’s actions, returned after two days to wash off the mural and much to his surprise, was unable to. Eventually he found out what had happened, and shared a laugh with Phil. While Jimmi did not have permission to create the artwork and explain the situation to Council, they were ore than happy to let the piece remain. This story was first covered by ABC South West Victoria, and the video they produced was watched more than 5 million times within a week of being published.

Back on board we continue our journey home with a stop at Allansford Cheese World (time permitting) for a tour and cheese tasting, there is also a Café here, if you wish to have some refreshments, at own expense. We’ll then board our coach to continue home with some refreshments/restroom breaks along the way.
