Things to Do in The South Coast

The coastal region from Albany westwards to Margaret River is also a rich region of forests and pastures, vineyards and craft outlets, coastal scenery, and appealing accommodation options, but without the crowds and sophistication of its more famous neighbor -- and there's more wilderness.

Albany  is WA's oldest settlement, set alongside a superb natural harbor. West from here are the two adjacent but very different towns of Denmark  and Walpole. Denmark is a bustling town, part seaside resort, part retirement/lifestyle retreat, and part tourist center, while Walpole is much smaller and more basic. They are "tied" together by the magnificent forest that sits between the two, and the magical Treetop Walk  that soars through the upper reaches of giant tingle and karri trees. The karri is one of the world's tallest trees, growing up to 90m (295 ft.) high; it's also one of the most graceful, growing true and straight with no branches in its lower half, and with a beautiful smooth bark that shades from pale grey to creamy-gold.

Another 120km (75 miles) northwest of Walpole is the timber town of Pemberton . The timber industry is slowly fading, with most "old growth" forests now preserved for posterity, but vineyards and truffle farms are taking over. You'll have the chance to climb towering old fire-lookout trees.

Sweeping through the region is Australia's greatest bushwalk, the Bibbulmun Track , which takes in the best of the wilderness areas.

South Coast Cruise and Travel Logo

We have been working with Lindy and the gang at South Coast Cruise and Travel now for nearly 5 years. And what an amazing journey we have had!

At the start of 2015 we were asked to create a new logo for South Coast Cruise and Travel and that was literally just the start.

Since then we have completely overhauled the SCC+T brand, including corporate identity, ever evolving and never boring shopfront signage with the help of our friends at John Hills Signs, Posters, Flyers, Invitations, banners, flags, Social Media assistance, Interior fit out graphics/installations and broadcast television advertisement. Lindy and the team are continuously looking for new and exciting ways to further their reach and we love being a part of such an energetic and classy brand. The experience that South Coast Cruise and Travel brings to the travel industry in Nowra is next to none and they required a brand that personified this. Working with Lindy, Brianna, Amanda and Prue has been an absolute pleasure and we couldn’t be more pleased with the experiences that it has presented us in all aspects of design and advertisement.

“Burnt Phoenix Design has been such an integral part of the success in our business. Branding is an essential part for any business however to have this kind of superior quality craftmanship on hand has now become synonymous in all we do. We now have banners, event invitations, advertisements, social media, Web, Facebook tiles, we are now moving towards Cinema and TV adverts. We can’t thank Josh enough for his classy, dynamic creativity and I urge you to be branded using Burnt Phoenix’s fabulous business. It will be the best financial commitment you will make that will give the Return on Investment any business requires.”

From the remote, icy beauty of Antarctica to the glorious beaches of Uruguay’s cosmopolitan Punta Del Este, a cruise to South America is a revelation. There are so many contrasts to experience; the extraordinary street art of Valparaiso, sizzling steaks and fine wines in Buenos Aires, the serrated, snowy mountains of Patagonia, and the vast, empty sands of the Falkland Islands, populated by thousands of penguins. Let Celebrity show you this magnificent continent in style on one of our ships.

Featured South America Cruises

Embark on the adventure of a lifetime with South American cruises, sailing round-trip from Buenos Aires on a 14-night voyage to the isolated, British-owned Falkland Islands and then south to the icy beauty of Antarctica. Marvel at enchanting penguins, basking seals, pods of humpback whales, and towering mountains draped in snow.

Patagonia & Argentina

From the sultry rhythm of tango that pulsates through the streets of Buenos Aires to the rolling vineyards of Chile, a voyage between the Argentine capital and Valparaiso unlike any other. Spot whales in Puerto Madryn, follow in the wake of the great explorers around windswept Cape Horn, and marvel at the backdrop of jagged peaks and pristine forests as your ship glides through the scattered jigsaw of islands off the tip of wild Patagonia.

Galapagos Islands

Each evening, you'll come home to one of three vessels that are as extraordinary as the islands. The 100-guest, all-suites Celebrity Flora—the first and only ship in the region to receive a Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Rating. The popular 48-guest Celebrity Xpedition. Or the intimate 16-guest Celebrity Xploration. Everything you want or need will be included—stunning accommodations, inspired food and drink, unlimited Wi-Fi—all delivered with superlative service.

Top South America FAQs

What is the best time of year to cruise around South America?

The seasons are reversed in the Southern Hemisphere, so the warmer months, from November to March or April, are the best time to cruise, which is when our Celebrity Eclipse will be sailing the region in 2024.

The Galapagos is completely different, as the islands lie across the Equator. The Galapagos is a year-round destination, with far fewer variations in climate, and benefits to sailing in any given month.

How safe is it?

For Celebrity Cruises® and parent company, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, the safety of our guests and crew has always been our highest priority. We encourage you to leave valuables on board when you go ashore, and to use the safe provided in your stateroom for your valuables.

As with any big city with lots of visitors, you should take precautions in places like Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires. Don’t carry your cell phone or wallet in your back pocket, and keep your purse and camera close to you. Do not leave your belongings unattended on a beach.

What are the typical ports of call on a South America cruise?

Celebrity offers a wide variety of South American cruises with many exciting ports of call. You could sail between Buenos Aires and Valparaiso with two ports of call in wild and beautiful Patagonia, as well as two in sophisticated Uruguay, and a day in Puerto Madryn, Argentina. Or you could pick a similar itinerary that included the Chilean Fjords, an area of vast glaciers, narrow channels, and jagged peaks.

If you prefer a warmer climate, pick an itinerary that sails between sophisticated Buenos Aires and exotic Rio de Janeiro. You’ll also visit Buzios and São Paulo in Brazil, and Montevideo and Punta del Este in Uruguay.

To many, the ultimate adventure is a cruise to Antarctica , a world of icy beauty, towering mountains, and extraordinary wildlife. These itineraries include Ushuaia, the most southerly city in the world, and the fascinating Falkland Islands.

Galapagos cruises visit several islands and landing points over the course of a week, with multiple opportunities for wildlife spotting, hiking, snorkeling, and exploring pristine beaches and mangroves.

Are there any vaccination or health requirements?

There are no compulsory vaccinations for South America, but you should make sure your regular inoculations are up to date, as you may be traveling to remote areas. If you are arriving from a country where yellow fever is prevalent, you may need a yellow fever vaccination certificate, so check with your physician in advance.

Celebrity does not sail to areas where there is a high risk of malaria, so you will not need anti-malarial medication.

How do I handle currency exchange for the different countries visited?

Some South America cruises visit as many as four countries, and each will only accept its own currency. You will be able to use credit cards in big cities like Buenos Aires, Montevideo, and Rio de Janeiro, but in more rural areas, you may need cash.

You will find ATMs on shore, and you can also change money on the ship. Make sure you understand the exchange rate in each port before you go ashore and spend money.

What types of wildlife and natural landmarks can I expect to see?

South America is an enormous continent and you will see extremes of climate, geography, and wildlife. You might see whales around Puerto Madryn and Magellanic penguins in Patagonia. If you visit Antarctica, you’ll see gentoo and chinstrap penguins, leopard seals, and most likely, several kinds of whales. On the Drake Passage, you could spot graceful wandering albatross, the bird with the widest wingspan on the planet. Excursions in the Falkland Islands take you to look for five different species of penguin, while in Ecuador and Chile, you could see magnificent condors soaring on the thermals.

In the Galapagos, you’ll see endemic species including marine and land iguanas, Galapagos penguins, Galapagos sea lions, reef sharks, sea turtles, and many more.

Is a cruise a good way to see South America?

A cruise is an exceptionally good way to see South America. Distances are long and it would be very time-consuming to visit the number of destinations you can see on a cruise if you were traveling by land and air.

A South America cruise offers wonderful contrasts, too. For example, in the space of 12 nights you could be enjoying a sultry tango show in Buenos Aires, exploring the wilds of Patagonia, sailing around Cape Horn, and admiring the famous street art in Valparaiso. You could see the beautiful Chilean Fjords and the Lake District, or experience the ultimate adventure, a voyage to Antarctica.

How long are South America cruises?

The majority of our South America cruises range from 12 to 14 nights. Galapagos cruises are seven nights, but if you add on a land extension, the whole experience will be 10, 11, or 16 nights.

Where do they depart from?

South America cruises depart from Buenos Aires, Valparaiso, and Los Angeles. Galapagos cruise and land packages start in Quito. Alternatively, you can join your ship in Baltra, in the Galapagos itself.

What should I pack?

A South America cruise could take you through many different climates. If you sail between Buenos Aires and Valparaiso, for example, you should pack for warm summer days and beach weather in the cities, and much cooler, windier weather in Ushuaia and Punta Arenas. If you are headed for Antarctica, you will need layers, fleeces, gloves, a hat, and a good waterproof jacket. If you’re traveling to Brazil, on the other hand, pack breathable fabrics and loose clothing for the tropics.

For the Galapagos, pack clothing in neutral colors that will protect you from the sun, as you could be out walking for hours at a time. You will need a hat, walking shoes, and a lot of space on your camera’s memory card as you will take a lot of photos. Wetsuits and snorkel gear are provided on board the ship.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through cover-ups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features one to two “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

Cruises to the Galapagos are less formal and there are no Evening Chic nights, as these are expedition voyages. In the Galapagos, for women, we recommend resort-casual attire (pants, skirts, or even casual dresses), and for men, a comfortable shirt and pants in the evenings.

Iceland’s South Coast Is Perfect for First-time Visitors — How to See the Blue Lagoon, Waterfalls, and More in 5 Days

I came for the northern lights and left seeing so much more.

south coast travel and cruise

Kayla Becker/Travel + Leisure

I got the call at dusk — the one that some visitors to Iceland never get. The northern lights had been spotted in Hella’s sky, and Hotel Rangá had faithfully placed the wake-up call to the room to report it. I had no time for my coat; I forgot my gloves on the way out the door — and when I first clocked those green swirls across the sky, they were so vast, I couldn’t take them in all at once.

It was only night two of my five-day road trip along Iceland’s South Coast, and I was already checking off once-in-a-lifetime experiences . This is exactly why I’d come. I’d heard that if you’re a traveler with limited time, this was the place to make it count.

Kayla Becker/Travel + Leisure

It’s true that you can barely drive 30 minutes without seeing a natural wonder here. The mere 200-mile stretch is home to some of the country’s most famous sites, including Skógafoss waterfall, Víkurfjara black-sand beach, and Sólheimajökull glacier, among others, many accessible right off the highway and all within striking distance of Reykjavik. This, and the fact that it’s easily driven on Route 1, is perhaps what makes it so popular with first-time visitors.

Driving it feels almost like exploring another planet, with vast, treeless fields of volcanic rock giving way to wild surf; other times, it’s like entering the pages of Tolkien fiction, where mossy mountains are punctuated with rainbow-wreathed waterfalls.

Like many visitors to the South Coast, I started in Reykjavik. After flying into Keflavik Airport (KEF) and driving the 45 minutes to town, I was rewarded with a respite at The Reykjavik Edition . The sleek, unflashy embodiment of quiet luxury delivered contemporary Scandinavian hygge in heaps, from bathrooms stocked with Le Labo toiletries and heated tile floors to a stunning spa and a rooftop bar.

In between visits to the capital’s treasures (an obligatory stroll down Rainbow Street to spaceship-like church Hallgrimskirkja; a deep dive into the Icelandic Punk Museum , housed in a graffitied former public restroom), I kept returning to its food. Whether it was a quick hot dog for lunch at iconic, no-frills stand Baejarins Beztu Pylsur , a glass of natural wine at cozy local bar Vínstúkan Tíu Sopar , or a locally sourced tasting menu at Tides (helmed by Michelin-starred chef Gunnar Karl Gíslason), Iwas continually floored — all on day one.

As any first-time traveler to Iceland should, I dedicated my second day to the Blue Lagoon , a 45-minute drive from Reykjavik. I saw it far before the parking lot — steam rising from the geothermal baths thanks to water that’s naturally a toasty 98 degrees. I found it helpful to book an early arrival time to beat the heaviest traffic; upon sinking into the water, I applied my complimentary silica mud mask and felt entirely relaxed. Just a few hours were all I needed to feel rejuvenated. The verdict? It was well worth the 11,490 krona ($80), especially when paired with lunch at on-site restaurant Lava. It's one of the world’s 25 natural wonders, after all.

Less than an hour after lunch, I’d reached pastoral land dotted with sheep and Icelandic ponies — and Hella’s Hotel Rangá . This property has a reputation that precedes it: Not only is it the most luxe hotel in the area, but it has also become something of a tourist destination for northern lights sightings, offering a 24/7 wake-up call and an on-site astronomer to assist with stargazing. With just a bit of luck, we saw the best display so far of the season (roughly September to April, and I’d come in September).

Outside the hotel, my eyes followed the Ranga River to the east and spotted a snow-capped mountain, Hekla. There’s an old Icelandic myth that holds that this volcano, one of the country’s most active and destructive, is the gate of hell, and the hundreds of gulls circling it are condemned souls. "It’s easy to see how that’s true," I thought, and fell asleep dreaming of fire and ice and lore.

Needing to learn more about the 130 volcanoes that dot the island, I woke up early and drove to the Lava Centre in Hvolsvollur, just a five-minute drive from the hotel. The trip was starting to feel like a master class in the elements of wind, fire, and water. I continued down Route 1 to one of the most popular waterfalls in the area, Skógafoss.

But like many times on this trip, I couldn’t seem to get far without passing another wonder from the road; this time, it was another waterfall: Seljalandsfoss. When I pulled up, I was pleasantly surprised to learn you can walk behind the 197-foot fall (I was glad I packed waterproof clothes). After the slight (life-changing) detour, I reached my second waterfall of the day, Skógafoss, which you can practically walk right up to — and hike 527 steps to the top. Had I planned an extended journey, I would’ve continued on one of the longer hikes at the top.

Instead, I drove on to Dyrholaey, past caves fit for hobbits, to reach ocean-washed cliffs with black sand. By now, the puffins had vacated the area, and gulls swarmed the sea caves. Just miles past and minutes from the ocean was my final stop of the trip, Hotel Kría . The 73-room hotel has a stunning location just a 10-minute walk to Víkurfjara black-sand beach, where the shore could’ve been made of Oreo pie crust and jagged rock formations almost lure you out to the dangerous water.

Just a few minutes from the wild surf, the town has a surprising amount of trendy eateries, including Skool Beans , a micro cafe on a renovated yellow school bus complete with string lights, cozy seating, excellent lattes, and a resident cat; plus, Smidjan Brugghus , where I bumped elbows with locals who came for burgers and craft beers with creative names like "Stuck at Home" and "Wet Spot." With one full day left, I’d made it more than 250 miles along the coast — the perfect spot for a grand finale: a glacier hike at Sólheimajökull with local outfitter Troll Expeditions . After gearing up in waterproof pants, a harness, and crampons, I realized I had passed this glacier on the way in — just another world wonder you can see from the road. Spotting its icy peaks, mesmerizing chasms and crevasses up close gave a face to the climate change the land is experiencing, a sobering reminder of the fleeting nature of these natural wonders.

I drove back to Reykjavik fulfilled and snuck in one last lunch at Cafe Loki, where they serve traditional Icelandic fare like fermented shark. I cranked up Icelandic artists like Kaleo and The Sugarcubes on the way back, and just when I thought I couldn’t see anything more on this trip, a double rainbow shone the whole way to the airport, a send-off that seemed to invite me back again.

Boarding conditions and passenger travel abilities

We invite you to read our boarding conditions and passenger travel abilities by clicking here .

Any new reservation implies the acceptance of these conditions.

To guarantee your entry into one or several countries, you must ensure that you comply with the formalities and health requirements specific to each destination. In just a few clicks on our online search engine, find all the formalities you must complete prior to your departure (visas, entry authorisations for each country, vaccinations, etc.).

The international situation can change rapidly, so be sure to check this information regularly prior to your departure. However, please note that we always recommend our guests contact the relevant national immigration and customs and border control authorities directly to find out what rules apply to their specific situation. PONANT is not responsible for any decisions made by guests based on the information provided by the online search engine.

The information below is current but subject to change at any time without advance notice from government authorities. Please consult your respective government agencies for visa and health information.

Passport valid for at least six (6) months beyond the completion of your trip. Passport must contain at least two completely clear, blank, unused visa pages for each visa required, not including any amendment pages. Visa pages with stains or ink from other pages in the passport are not usable. Guests who deviate from the scheduled embarkation or disembarkation port should research the foreign entry requirements for the port country. Due to government regulations, regrettably, Ponant will have to deny boarding to any guest who fails to obtain the appropriate travel documentation for this trip.

Australia : an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) must be obtained before your arrival in Australia. For more information, please visit https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-finder/visit . Carriers should be aware that there will not be any physical evidence in your passport. A copy of your ETA must be sent to PONANT at the latest 45 days prior to your cruise date. We also ask you to keep a copy of your ETA and keep it with your passport throughout the duration of your trip.

Australian customs regulations are very strict, especially for the import of food items such as fresh food (even sealed), fruits, eggs, meat, plants, vegetables, seeds, grains. Fur and feathers are also forbidden. We highly recommend you consult this website for further details : https://www.abf.gov.au/entering-and-leaving-australia/can-you-bring-it-in.

It is recommended that you contact your health professional for any specific medical advise relating to travel through these regions, including advice on Malaria prevention and dengue fever.

List of items prohibited on board

To guarantee the safety and well-being of our guests, certain items are strictly prohibited on board. Warning about the use of drones : the use of drones aboard PONANT ships, whether they are sailing at sea, at a port of call or anchored, is strictly forbidden. The use of drones on land in the Arctic and Antarctic regions is also strictly forbidden by international polar regulations. In other regions, it may be possible to use drones on land if permission has been obtained from the relevant authorities of each country and each region travelled through, as well as a pilot’s licence that should be obtained from your home country. Passengers are responsible for obtaining these permits; they should be able to present them at all times. Passengers who do not obtain these authorisations expose themselves to the risk of legal proceedings.

Expedition programmes include activities such as zodiac outings and landings (sometimes with "wet landings"), moderate walks to more active hikes, all accompanied by your expedition team of naturalist guides.

Ports of call, visited sites, outings and landings will depend on weather conditions, winds and the state of the sea. These can force a change of plans at any time. The Captain and the Expedition Leader may at any time cancel or stop any activity, or even modify the itinerary. The final itinerary will be confirmed by the Captain, who will take into account the touristic quality of the sites and above all, the safety of the passengers. His decision will be based on advice from experts and authorities.

Travelling to isolated regions is an exhilarating experience. In remote areas, please remember that you are far from modern hospitals with full medical facilities, thus evacuation is extremely expensive. Without adequate medical coverage, all expenses will have to be immediately paid with your personal funds. We urge you to subscribe to full coverage insurance, choose your insurance company very carefully, be extremely vigilant and ensure your insurance is fully comprehensive, especially if you are insured by your credit card. They're back! This major cruise line is restarting a beloved Southern Caribbean routing

Princess Cruises is bringing back a much-loved set of itineraries that it hasn't offered in years.

The world's fifth-largest cruise line this week announced it would restart seven-night voyages to the Southern Caribbean out of San Juan, Puerto Rico — something it hasn't had on its schedule for more than a decade.

The sailings, which will take place on the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess, are set to kick off in October 2025.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

The voyages will alternate between two itineraries. The first will bring calls at Tortola, St. Kitts, Dominica, Grenada and Barbados. The second will bring calls at St. Thomas, St. Maarten (the Dutch side of the island of St. Martin), Antigua, St. Vincent and Barbados.

Passengers can combine the two itineraries to create a 14-night trip focused on the Southern Caribbean with almost no overlapping ports.

Such seven-night sailings to the Southern Caribbean out of San Juan have been popular in the past among cruisers who want to get deep into the Southern Caribbean on a cruise without being away for more than a week. Southern Caribbean sailings from the major cruise hubs in Florida tend to be longer due to the long sailing distances involved.

San Juan is an ideal home port for sailings to the Southern Caribbean due to its location, which is closer to Southern Caribbean islands than the bigger cruise hubs in Florida.

Sailings out of San Juan typically have more port calls than Caribbean sailings out of any other port.

The new Princess sailings out of San Juan will be offered seasonally for the winter, with the trips continuing through March 2026.

In a statement accompanying the announcement, Princess Chief Commercial Officer Terry Thornton suggested that a growing number of flights into San Juan from cities in the United States as well as Europe and South America was making it easier to operate cruises out of the city.

"Our return to San Juan after more than a decade not only reconnects our guests with a port rich in history and charm, but further expands the variety of departure points across North America that our guests can sail from," Thornton said.

Fares for the sailings have not yet been announced. The trips will be available to book starting May 16.

The announcement marks a last-minute change in deployment for Grand Princess, which originally was scheduled to sail to Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific in late 2025 out of the Australian ports of Brisbane and Sydney.

Unveiled in 1998, Grand Princess is the oldest Princess cruise ship . It's the namesake vessel for the line's Grand Class of vessels, which remain at the core of the Princess fleet.

Israel-Gaza latest: Israeli president Isaac Herzog thanks Joe Biden after far-right minister's 'irresponsible' comments

Joe Biden has said he will not supply weapons if Israel launches a full-scale offensive in Rafah, a day after it emerged the US had paused a shipment of bombs to Israel. Listen to our Daily podcast on why a ceasefire hasn't happened while you scroll.

Welcome back to our live coverage of the Israel-Hamas war and wider tensions in the Middle East.

That's all for our live coverage for the moment.

Our regular updates will continue tomorrow.

UK forces have airdropped 110 tonnes of aid for Gaza civilians today.

The RAF completed its 11th airdrop today, which include ready-to-eat meals, water, rice, tinned goods and flour, from 120 parachutes.

The aid was dropped along the northern coastline of Gaza.

The UK began conducting airdrops in late March, as part of the Jordanian international initiative.

Defence secretary Grant Shapps said the UK's commitment to delivering large quantities of aid to those most in need was "unwavering".

"Given the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, we deployed RFA Cardigan Bay to the Eastern Mediterranean to support efforts to build a temporary pier to deliver crucial humanitarian assistance," he said.

By Mark Stone , US correspondent

All decisions have intended consequences and unintended consequences.

The intended consequence of President Biden's threat to stop sending some weapons to Israel is straightforward: to stop the Israeli military from going into Rafah without a clear, deliverable plan for the civilian population.

But there are so many unintended consequences.

Both geopolitically and domestically for President Biden this decision could come to haunt him.

Even before we consider the unintended consequence, there is a key point: the perils of setting red lines.

Too often they turn out to be flawed tools of geo-political diplomacy.

What if Netanyahu bulldozes through the red line and invades Rafah?

He's probably got enough American weapons in storage to do that.

Will Biden stick to his threat to pull weapons delivery? Or will he relent? What message will both of those choices send, far and wide?

That brings us on to the unintended consequences. First, the regional consequences:

  • Could there be a greater numbers of civilian casualties? If Netanyahu continues with his Rafah operation but with a dwindling supply of American weapons (so-called smart bombs) then he will use less sophisticated "dumb bombs". This could cause even more civilian casualties;
  • What message does it sends regionally? That America could be seen to abandon Israel (despite that not being what Biden said) will not be lost on countries around the world. It suggests that America is flaky with its alliances. For months, Biden has dismissed calls to limit weapons supplies. Now he's U-turned. Gulf countries already wonder about the stability of America as an ally. While they will agree with his announcement last night, the wider message it sends will resonate;
  • Does it embolden Iran? Limiting weapons to its oldest Middle Eastern ally at a time of profound danger for Israel is being seen by some as a gift for Tehran;
  • What impact will it have on ceasefire negotiations? It's logical that Hamas may see this decision as weakening Israel and may therefore hold out in the ongoing negotiations to get more out of them.

Then there are the domestic political consequences.

They were spelt out by his presidential opponent, Donald Trump who said: "What Biden is doing with respect to Israel is disgraceful. If any Jewish person voted for Joe Biden, they should be ashamed of themselves. He's totally abandoned Israel and nobody can believe it."

President Biden has already alienated key sections of the voter population with his existing Gaza policy.

By supporting Netanyahu unequivocally, he has angered key Arab-American populations in places like Michigan - a state he needs to win in November. Beyond that, students (many of whom would be natural Biden voters) say they now can't vote for him and "genocide Joe" is their cry.

Now, with his weapons announcement, he risks alienating Jewish-American voters too. Many are deeply angry at what they see as an abandonment of the Jewish State.

His badly articulated insistence that he will still have Israel's back in terms of defence will be lost on many voters. They see only the headline.

Remember too that pretty much all Republicans are against every lever he pulls to rein in Israel; they want nothing less than unequivocal support for Israel.

More than that though - a significant number of his own Democrats are also uneasy about America limiting weapons for Israel. Only the progressive left of his party support his move.

It is a perilous political push-me-pull-you and the election is six months away.

Joe Biden has said that he will not supply offensive weapons that Israel could use to launch an all-out assault on Rafah.

He said that the US was still committed to Israel's defence and would supply iron dome rocket interceptors and other defensive arms but that if Israel goes into Rafah, "we're not going to supply the weapons and artillery shells used".

Here, our Middle East correspondent Alistair Bunkall takes a deeper look at what the warning means...

The leader of Yemen's Houthis has said the group will target ships of any company related to supplying or transporting goods to Israel regardless of their destination.

Abdul Malik al-Houthi said this was a fourth stage of escalation in retaliation to "the Israeli aggression on Rafah" in southern Gaza.

"From now on, we are also thinking about the fifth stage and the sixth stage, and we have very important, sensitive and influential choices on the enemies," he added.

For context : Months of Houthi attacks in the Red Sea have disrupted global shipping, forcing firms to re-route to longer and more expensive journeys around southern Africa, and stoked fears that the Israel-Hamas war could spread to destabilise the wider Middle East.

The United States and Britain have carried out strikes against Houthi targets in response to the attacks on shipping.

Joe Biden is "stuck between a rock and a hard place" when it comes to his Israel policy, former White House director of global engagement has said.

Speaking to Sky News, Brett Bruen said the US leader was heading into a "crucial series of political months" as he entered another presidential race and the war "has just been a massive headache".

"The position that Biden is taking in some ways is political posturing, he is trying to dissuade Netanyahu from doing a full on invasion," he said.

"Yet at the same time Netanyahu is not showing any signs of letting up."

Mr Bruen said Mr Netanyahu had "somewhat painted himself into a corner".

He added: "Domestically he is increasingly unpopular as a result of the 7 October attacks and the way he has put the US- Israel relationship in danger.

"Yesterday's comments by Biden will be costly for Netanyahu and his political standing in the country and yet he still has to contend with the fact that there are those on the Israeli right who are saying 'you have got to move forward'.

"There are no good options for Netanyahu either."

The Israeli president has publicly thanked Joe Biden after one of the country's outspoken ministers said "Hamas loves Biden".

Itamar Ben-Gvir, the national security minister, made the comment after the US president said he would halt offensive weapons sales to Israel if it invades Rafah (see post at 9.02am).

In response, Isaac Herzog, the president, said it was important that even when there are disagreements and moments of disappointment between friends and allies, "there is a way to clarify the disputes".

"It is beholden upon all of us to avoid baseless, irresponsible and insulting statements and tweets that harm the national security and the interests of the state of Israel," he said.

Mr Herzog also said he wanted to take the opportunity to thank Israel's "greatest ally, the US".

"I would like to say thank you to President Biden, who is a great friend of the state of Israel, and who proved as such from the first day of the war," he said.

We have been reporting today on Joe Biden's warning that the US would stop supplying weapons if Israeli forces conduct a full-scale offensive in Rafah.

It marked his strongest language to date on the issue.

But can Israel achieve its aims without US weapons?

Our military analyst Sean Bell says "it's very likely they can".

"Although the US has said it is pausing the supply of weapons, it's not going to stop supplying defensive weapons," he says.

Bell says Israel will have "significant stockpiles" and will use those if the decision is made to go into Rafah.

"Rafah is a relatively small area as well so it looks unlikely to have any significant military effect."

Bell says Mr Biden's comments are more likely a "political statement".

"The International Court of Justice said Israel needs to do more to protect the civilian population and any nation that provides weapons to a country which then uses them in violation of international law also becomes vulnerable," he says.

"I think this is a really clear statement from President Biden.

"He doesn't want to get tarnished with that brush as all.

"I don't think there will be a military impact but I do think this is a reflection of the frustration Biden is feeling with the actions of Netanyahu."

Joe Biden's weapons threat "practically buries a hostage deal at this point", a source close to the Israeli leader has told Sky News.

The US president warned overnight that the US would halt the supply of some weapons to Israel if it launches a full-scale invasion of Rafah.
