Birmingham named as Visit Britain headquarters

birmingham-2022-chamberlain-square(903977)

National tourism agency VisitBritain/VisitEngland has announced that it has selected Birmingham as the location for its new headquarters from April 2024.

The body - which raises Britain 's profile worldwide to develop the country 's visitor economy - picked Birmingham thanks to its strong international and UK transport links and availability of local talent.

Located at the heart of England, Birmingham and the West Midlands has unrivalled connectivity, strong leisure assets, internationally known brands and a particular strength in business events.

Home to Peaky Blinders, Birmingham Royal Ballet and 11 Michelin-starred restaurants, the region welcomed an unprecedented 141.2 million visitors in 2022, with visitor spend rising to a record £14.1 billion.

VisitBritain/VisitEngland also cited its successful working relationship with the Birmingham, Solihull and Black Country LVEP (Local Visitor Economy Partnership).

As part of the groundbreaking, global Business and Tourism Programme (BATP), the region helped to deliver the UK 's most popular Commonwealth Games in 2022.

The West Midlands Growth Company, the region 's investment promotion and destination management agency, supported VisitBritain/VisitEngland throughout the competitive national process.

It will continue to assist the tourism body during the coming months by securing the right long-term office space, sourcing local talent and helping it to forge ever-closer links with West Midlands partners and educational institutions.

Neil Rami, chief executive of the West Midlands Growth Company, said: “The West Midlands Growth Company led a decisive bid that showcased the West Midlands ' irrefutable strengths as a growing and successful headquarter economy.

“VisitBritain/VisitEngland 's decision to establish its new office in Birmingham is testament to the well-evidenced talent pool, transport connectivity and business support infrastructure we have in place to enable important and far-reaching organisations to thrive.

“The move also underscores the significance of the West Midlands ' vital contribution to the visitor economy and our ability to meaningfully shape policy in this space. We look forward to our continued, productive partnership with VisitBritain/VisitEngland and making its Birmingham headquarters a roaring success. ”

VisitBritain/VisitEngland will follow in the footsteps of other government departments and bodies, which have successfully relocated to the West Midlands in recent years.

These include HM Revenue & Customs to Birmingham; Homes England to Coventry; and the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities to Wolverhampton.

Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands, said: “With record tourist numbers, world class museums, excellent connectivity to the whole country and, of course, following on from the spectacular 2022 Commonwealth Games, Birmingham is the perfect place for VisitBritain.

“It is great to see yet another leading organisation place confidence in us and choose to call the West Midlands home. ”

Cllr John Cotton, Leader of Birmingham City Council, said: “Today's fantastic news further underlines Birmingham's growing stature as a world class tourist destination.

“This is a warm, friendly city region with award-winning museums and galleries, world class cultural institutions and festivals, major sporting events, family friendly attractions, amazing parks and scenic waterways. We look forward to welcoming VisitBritain/VisitEngland to Birmingham. ”

What are you looking for, travelling to britain.

VisitBritain

Reflection of man with camera in side view mirror of car

Introduction

Whether you’re travelling by Eurotunnel , Eurostar, coach, ferry or plane, there are plenty of options to make getting here as easy as possible.

Getting to Britain by air

Flying to Britain is easy. London Heathrow is the largest airport and is very well connected to central London. The capital is also home to Gatwick , Stansted and  City  airports.

Other major international airports include  Manchester , Liverpool  and Newcastle in the North of England, Birmingham in the Midlands and Bristol in the South West. Scotland is served by both Edinburgh and Glasgow airports. Cardiff Airport provides international connections for Wales, while Northern Ireland is served by Belfast.

All British airports are well connected with local public transport. The Heathrow Express provides a fast, direct train into London Paddington station, while the airport is also connected to the London Underground network. Gatwick,   Stansted and Manchester have regular express train connections, while Edinburgh has a tram link to the city centre. Shop for Heathrow Express tickets and Stansted Express tickets here.

Getting Britain by train/Eurostar

You can cross from continental Europe to Britain directly by train. The Channel Tunnel links Britain to the European continent via Eurostar trains (which take passengers) and Eurotunnel trains (which take passengers in their cars) providing a greener alternative to flying. Eurostar trains link Paris, Lille and Calais in France; Brussels in Belgium; and Amsterdam and Rotterdam in the Netherlands directly via the Channel Tunnel with London and South East England.

Getting from Paris to London

Frequent Eurostar services operate from around 6.45am-9.15pm between Paris and London every day of the week, taking around 2 hours 20 minutes.

The Paris-London train arrives at London’s St Pancras International station, home to world-class shopping, top restaurants and bars.

Getting from Amsterdam, Brussels, Calais, Lille, and Rotterdam to London

Services also run between these destinations and London every day of the week.

Services from Amsterdam to London take just 4 hours 10 minutes.

Services from Brussels to London take just 2 hours.

See the full  Eurostar timetables .

Once in Britain, the rail network here covers the whole country, serving more than 2,500 stations. From London, it’s possible to be in Scotland in just four hours, and in Wales in around two hours.

Getting to Britain by car

A network of car and passenger ferry services conveniently link several ports around the UK with northern and southern Europe. Key international UK ferry ports include: Felixstowe, Harwich, Folkestone, Dover, Southampton, and Bristol in south England; Hull and Liverpool in north England; Edinburgh in Scotland, and Belfast in Northern Ireland.

Fares vary according to the season, time of travel and duration of stay so it’s worth checking before you book. Crossing times also vary, from just over an hour on the shortest routes to 24 hours on services from places like Spain and Scandinavia.

Eurotunnel trains connect Calais in France with Folkestone in just 35 minutes. Unlike ferry services, all passengers remain in their vehicles for the duration of the journey, meaning the Eurotunnel can be a better option for less able-bodied passengers.

Travelling to Britain by coach

Using   coach or bus services is a cheap but often time-consuming way of travelling to the UK. Many services offer regular routes that cross the English Channel from the European continent. You could choose to terminate your journey in London or other major cities in the UK.

Birmingham will be home to VisitBritain’s new headquarters, the national tourism agency has announced.

VisitBritain/VisitEngland, which is funded by the Department for Media, Culture and Sport and tasked with promoting the country’s tourist offer, said it chose Birmingham because of the city's strong international and UK transport links and key stakeholders.

The tourism agency said it had seen other government departments and private sector companies successfully transition their operations to the region.

West Midlands mayor Andy Street said: ‘With record tourist numbers, world class museums, excellent connectivity to the whole country and, of course, following on from the spectacular 2022 Commonwealth Games, Birmingham is the perfect place for VisitBritain.’

Birmingham welcomed 141.2 million visitors in 2022, who brought in £14.1bn, according to the West Midlands Combined Authority.

Patricia Yates, CEO of VisitBritain/VisitEngland, said the agency would retain office space in London to maintain relationships with government and industry stakeholders based in the capital.

The new headquarters are set to open in April next year, with the exact location yet to be announced.
