Norway Cruise Highlights

Norwegian fjords.

Nature buffs and adventure seekers can’t miss seeing the stunning Norwegian fjords during their cruise. Bergen is a great jumping-off point to see fjords like Hardangerfjord, the country’s second-largest fjord. UNESCO World Heritage Site Geirangerfjord is known as the “crown jewel” of the country’s fjords, contrasting steep waterfalls with snow-peaked mountain caps. Go slightly off-the-beaten path to neighboring Hjørundfjord, where activities like fjord fishing and kayaking will captivate you.

Art & History

Explore Oslo’s famous Viking Ship Museum and see three expertly preserved vessels. Spend a while at the Munch Museum, dedicated to the painter Edvard Munch, known best for his painting “The Scream.” In Bergen, Bryggens Museum is a mighty testament to life in the town before a devastating fire in 1955, where excavations uncovered beautiful reminders of everyday Norwegian life. Bergen is also home to its own art museum that uniquely preserves the homes of famous composers throughout history. Time travel at Sunnmøre Museum in Alesund, an open-air exhibit featuring preserved homes and boats dating back to medieval times.

Craft Breweries

Norway’s distilleries and craft microbrewing scene is rapidly growing in cities like Bergen and Alesund. After decades of mostly serving lagers, microbrewers around the country wanted to offer more variety for beer drinkers, so they started to brew their own IPAs, pale ales, and stouts. Ever since, Norway’s cities have brewed hundreds of their own unique drafts. Unwind after a day’s hike and try something new on the menu.

Featured Ports

Bergen, norway.

Rows of deep red, burnt orange, and white houses near Bryggen Wharf is one of the top sights in the city. Enjoy a romantic wharfside meal or a cozy coffee there before you visit Bryggens Museum or St. Mary’s Church. Ride a funicular rail to the summit of Mt. Fløyen for incredible panoramic views of the city below. Explore the surrounding fjords on an unforgettable kayaking or hiking adventure.

Alesund, Norway

On a Norway cruise, you’ll visit the picturesque town of Alesund, frequently cited as one of the country’s most beautiful places to visit. Spend a leisurely day exploring the Art Nouveau District. Hike up nearly 500 steps to Aksla Viewpoint and admire the stunning vistas of the archipelago and breathtaking fjords beyond. The town is also the gateway to Geirangerfjord, one of Norway’s most famous natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, nestled between imposing cliffs on all sides.

Oslo, Norway

Let Oslo’s metropolitan atmosphere energize you as you explore its opulent palaces and incredible museums. The capital of Norway is teeming with Viking history, from ships dating back to the 9th century at the Viking Museum to 17th-century art at the National Museum. Art lovers won’t want to miss seeing Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” in person. When you move on from historic wonders, grab a craft beer or sample local salmon at any of Oslo’s trendy eateries.

Why go on a fjord cruise from Oslo

If there is one thing Norway is particularly famous for, that’s unquestionably its mesmerizing fjords. Though the most famous ones lie in the country’s western part, those visiting Oslo are still in for a treat.

The Oslofjord stretches from the south part of the capital to the North Sea. Along the way, islands, lighthouses and wild nature paint the scenery. The best way to explore the small inlet and the city itself is to go on a fjord tour from Oslo, and here is why.

A unique city fjord

Before we start naming reasons why a cruise across the Oslofjord is a must for anyone visiting the Norwegian capital, we’d like to lay it on the line. As you glide across the Oslofjord, you won’t pass by imposing rocking formations and awe-inspiring glaciers such as the ones that adorn the Hardangerfjord and the Sognefjord in Western Norway.

However, the Oslofjord has its own unique charm. Combining both natural wonders and cultural sites, the Oslofjord is a feast for the eyes. Moreover, if you’re visiting Oslo for a short getaway, the Oslofjord cruise is the best way to get a real taste of the Norwegian capital without breaking a sweat.

Surrounded by lighthouses, ruins and beaches

An inlet of the Skagerrak sea, the tranquil fjord is divided into an inner and an outer part. Spanning from the Torbjørnskjær and Færder lighthouses in the south to Oslo in the north, Oslofjord boasts forested hills, azure-water beaches and picturesque bays.

A cluster of islands dots the inlet’s crystal-clear waters. As you sail among them you’ll have the opportunity to catch a glimpse of their unspoiled landscapes as well as the Dyna Lighthouse. Hovedøya, known for its medieval monastery ruins, Langøyene and Lindøya for their beaches and the virgin Nakholmen island are only some of them.

Enjoy the sight of iconic buildings from a unique perspective

As you reach the inner Oslo Fjord, the Norwegian capital will unfold before your eyes. Seeing the innovative city from the water is one of the best parts of the fjord cruise. The city’s iconic buildings such as the Oslo Opera House and the reinvented Aker Brygge neighborhood will pass before your eyes.

You’ll also have the chance to see the Bygdøy peninsula and its fascinating museums. Docked in front of the Maritime Museum, floats The SS ‘Svanen’, the only preserved three-masted ship from Norway’s golden age. Keep your eyes open and your camera ready to capture one of the most historic vessels.

Relaxation at its best

The fjord cruise from Oslo allows visitors to explore Eastern Norway in an alternative and relaxed way. Lay back on the boat’s comfortable deck and see Oslo from a different angle.

Take some landscape photographs and Instagrammable shots along the way and make your visit to Oslo unforgettable.

Routes North - Nordic travel guide

9 of the best fjord tours from Oslo

Sitting at the top of the Oslofjord, Norway’s capital city has no shortage of waterways, coasts and islets to explore by boat, sailing ship or even kayak, with terrific views back over the city.

Oslo's best boat trips explore the city and the Oslofjord

Some islands in the fjord are served by public ferry , but others can only be seen on a boat trip or tour. And there are plenty of boat trips to choose from that take in the best of the city’s waterscapes, from museum tours, jazz cruises to evening buffet trips.

If you want to see more of the Oslofjord and the city’s sights, however, you’re better off taking a boat tour with an expert guide on board. Here are some of our favourite Oslo boat trips!

Classic boat tour of Oslo’s museums and sights

Oslo's waterfront is best seen on a boat tour

This two-hour sightseeing tour takes in the main attractions of Oslo and its islands gives you the chance to explore the city’s tall coastline and picturesque houses.

We love that this trip is on a classic wooden sailing ship that glides past the modern Munch Museum, the Opera House and the Bygdøy peninsula, as well as several of the islands.

Museum admission fees are not included in the price, but there’s an expert guide on-board who can advise you about what to see and do.

CHECK PRICES

Cool jazz sailing boat trip

Summer houses in Oslofjord

For the ultimate chill-out tour, hop on a traditional wooden sailing ship for a three-hour cruise around the Oslofjord .

Take a seat on the long wooden benches on deck for an al fresco buffet meal of tasty local shrimps served with bread and mayonnaise, accompanied by funky live jazz along the way.

This is probably our favourite fun boat trip and is a great way to see Oslo from the water and admire the nearby islands with their picturesque summer homes.

Experience the Oslofjord on an electric boat

This boat tour takes in the sights of the inner Oslofjord on a silent, eco-friendly, electric boat .

You’ll sail past the Akershus Fortress and the impressive Oslo Opera House before visiting the pretty Hovedøya Island.

En route you can admire the lovely waterside cabins and holiday homes through large panoramic windows.

We like that this boat is quiet, has a lower environmental  impact and is fully accessible for wheelchair users.

Is the Oslo Pass worth buying?

Read this guide to see how much you could save during your trip!

Sing as you sail on a sunset cruise

This sing-along sunset sailing trip has a band and singer on-board and you’re encouraged to join in with fellow travellers as you sail past the sights of Oslo.

A picnic basket of tapas and a drink is included.

This is a sociable cruise, and makes a fun way for solo travellers to meet others.

Island hopping on local ferries

Hovedøya island can be seen on boat trip from Oslo

There are some beautiful unspoilt islands a short ferry ride away from the capital, and this guided tour takes you to some of the loveliest in an action-packed four-hour excursion using local ferries .

Your first stop is Hovedøya where you can see a ruined Cistercian monastery dating back to 1147 and walk through idyllic woodland (remember to wear sensible shoes).

The next island stop is Lindøya, dotted with colourful summer houses, where can enjoy a picnic or a bracing swim at one of its lovely beaches.

The next ferry leg passes the tranquil wooded island of Gressholmen, much of which is a nature reserve, before returning to Oslo.

We like the fact that this tour uses local ferries, but has an experienced guide to show you the best places to go, and to help you navigate the – sometimes confusing – public ferry system!

Boat, buffet and beer

Dyna lighthouse in the Oslofjord can be seen on boat trip from Oslo

A good way to combine eating, drinking and sailing is on this three-hour tour which offers delicious Norwegian shrimp snacks and a variety of hot and cold drinks .

There’s time to digest everything you’ve eaten on a three-hour boat trip around the Oslofjord – and you can immerse yourself in the city’s gorgeous scenery on the way home.

We think this tour is particularly good value, as it doesn’t cost much more than a regular boat trip, but includes food too.

Explore the Oslofjord by kayak

See the Oslofjord by kayak

Suitable for experts and complete novices, this three-hour guided kayak tour , led by an experienced guide, paddles out from the city into the Oslofjord.

Heading off from the sheltered Sjølyst Marina, it’s a relatively gentle trip to some gorgeous nearby islands and beaches and round the bright white Dyna Lighthouse.

You can either have your own single kayak, or share the paddling with a friend in a double.

It’s a lovely way to see the Oslofjord in a tranquil way and at your own pace.

Winter wonderland boat tour

You can visit the Bygdøy peninsula, Oslo by public ferry

Although many of Oslo’s boat trips are summer-only, this two-hour winter cruise allows you to see the Oslofjord at its wintery best.

Wrap up warm as the boat leaves Oslo with stunning views back towards the ultra-modern Opera House. The trip heads into the Oslofjord, past the quaint Dyna Lighthouse and many picturesque islands.

On the way back you also have the option to stop off at the Bygdøy peninsula, home to the famous Fram Museum and Maritime Museum, before a final hop back to your starting point.

Enjoy brunch on a boat

Sit back and enjoy a glass of fizz with brunch as you glide silently past the sights of the Oslofjord on a hybrid-electric boat.

The food is a highlight of the trip, with dishes made from local seasonal seasonal ingredients. In spring, for example, you can expect such treats as a Japanese egg custard with smoked trout or a local shrimp salad.

Are these tours really worth it?

Of course, you can do a DIY boat trip on the Oslofjord by taking some of the public ferries and exploring on your own.

However, you probably won’t save a huge amount of money doing it this way.

Tickets to the Bygdøy peninsula, bought on board the boat, cost 75 NOK each way and the cheapest boat trip – this 50-minute highlights trip on a wooden sailing boat that takes in the Akershus Fortress, the Oslo Opera House and the Munch Museum – costs just 230 NOK.

And the zoning and ticket system on the public ferries can be quite confusing, so you’ll need to suss out which zone the islands you want to visit are in and make sure you get the correct ticket.

Also, bearing in mind how pricey it is to eat out in Oslo, some of the boat trips that include food can be good value too.

Solo travellers may like the sociability of a boat trip, though others may prefer the flexibility and freedom of going independently.

Is Oslo really the best place to take a fjord tour?

The Oslofjord is not Norway’s most dramatic fjord, but is pretty and a peaceful antidote to the bustle of the city.

And if you’re in Oslo you’ll certainly want to go out and explore some of the islands and coastline, especially in summer.

However, it can’t really compare to the Bergen, when it comes to fjord tours. From Bergen, you can take a boat trip out to see some of Norway’s most picturesque fjords, including the Sognefjord, the Hardangerfjord and the Geirangerfjord.

For more on fjord cruises from Bergen, see our guide to the five best boat trips from Bergen .

And for other Scandinavian cities that are good for boat trips, see our guides to the best boat trips from Stockholm , the best canal tours from Gothenburg and the best boat trips from Copenhagen .

Oslo boat tour FAQs

Are any fjord tours included with the oslo pass .

There are no fjord tours currently included in the Oslo Pass , though it does give discounts of around 15% on a few harbour sightseeing tours and boat trips.

It also gives free travel on the ferry to the Bygdøy peninsula. For more on the Oslo Pass, and whether it can save you money, see our guide .

Where do Oslo’s boat tours depart from?

Most boat trips depart from Rådhusbrygge 3 (City Hall Pier No. 3) just in front of the Rådhus. This is also where public ferries depart for Dronningen and Bygdøynes Docks across the bay. Check with the boat trip provider, however, as some departure (and return) points vary.

Do Oslo’s boat tours run all year?

Most private boat tours run from late May or June to the end of August, when the weather is better and the Oslofjord is ice-free.

However, there are also atmospheric cruises that you can take throughout the winter, provided there’s no ice, while public ferries run across the bay from March to October.

Can I explore the Oslofjord by public ferry?

If you’re just heading out to the Bygdøy peninsular to visit the museums there, you can take the Bygdøyfergene from Rådhusbrygge 3. It leaves every 20 to 30 minutes from March to October.

It’s a short but picturesque hop across the inner Oslofjord to Dronningen Dock, where you can visit the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History and the Viking Ship Museum.

The ferry then returns via Bygdøynes dock, a short walk from the Fram Museum and Norwegian Maritime Museum. Tickets can be bought on board the ferry, but they’re slightly cheaper if bought online in advance .

Public transport tickets are not valid on the ferry, so you might want to get the Oslo Pass for your trip. There’s more on exploring the Oslofjord in this guide .

Why not add a cruise to your Norway in a Nutshell itinerary and see even more fjords? A cruise along the west coast from Bergen is a wonderful extension to any train tour package in Norway.

Fjord Cruise & Train

Self-drive tours, guided small group, northern lights, lofoten islands, hurtigruten cruises, what do our customers say.

The reviews speak for themselves. See what Nordic Visitor travellers said about their experience with us.

Fantastic trip

An absolutely fantastic trip to a beautiful country.

Excellent tour

The service and communication before the trip was very good, and the tour itself excellent. Hotels were very well-chosen. They were a good standard and ideally situated.

Well-planned itinerary

We found the process for enquiry, booking and recommendations quite easy and very informative. Tour was absolutely great. Well-planned itinerary.

Exceeded expectations

Great choice of accommodation! They exceeded expectations with first-class hotels and more.

Great way to plan a vacation

Nordic Visitor is a great way to plan a vacation to Scandinavia. They offer multiple options in each country, then you can customise as you want by adding a day in a city, or adding excursions. They know all the best options to make available and do a thorough job of preparing every leg of your journey. It was great to have a personal driver meet us at the airport to take us to our hotel in Oslo. Saved lots of concern about navigating public transportation in another country.

Excellent company!

Excellent company to work with! We were able to customise our tour and received detailed information ahead of time so we could make an informed decision about our options. The information packet we recieved ahead of the trip was extremely detailed and included everything we needed to make our trip go smoothly. The hotels were all outstanding as were all the tours and modes of transportation. Nordic Visitor knows the best places and things to do in Norway and saved us hours of planning and researching. We would highly recommend them for your travel!

This was the most amazing opportunity to experience different parts of the country. We experienced "different seasons" with the changing climate throughout the locations travelled. We experienced the different cultures of city vs. country living. We were able to talk with locals and learn about the history of Norway. It was a packed holiday between the driving, tours and exploring, but we felt we got a full immersive opportunity by choosing this package.

The itinerary was perfect

We booked the Best of Norway Fjords Express Tour. The itinerary was perfect and well-organised. All accommodations were very close to train stations or cruise ports. The transfers involved minimal wait time between bus and train on the same day. The accommodation, transportation and tours would have been very difficult to book on our own. Nordic Visitor did a great job putting everything together.

Very pleased

We were very pleased with all the arrangements and information. We were able to follow all the instructions easily.

The trip of a lifetime!

This was the trip of a lifetime. Norway is unbelievably beautiful and this trip with Nordic Visitor was amazing! The fjords were spectacular and the Norwegian towns and landscapes were charming. Our small group of 14 (plus the driver and tour guide) was perfect. Our group included people from the USA, Hong Kong and Australia, and all were very friendly and interesting. A perfect tour!

Well-organised

From start to finish, well organised. Good communication pre-travel and all reservations on the trip went smoothly.

Very well-executed

All organised items were very well-executed and we had no trouble making connections and finding hotels, etc. Nordic Visitor organised accommodation that was very close to transport, where possible, so less chance of us getting lost.

Norwegian Fjords Cruises

Norwegian Fjords Cruises

See Baltic, Scandinavia and Norways breathtaking scenery and natural wonders

If you take a cruise with a stop in Norway, you will have the opportunity to visit the lovely capital city of Oslo. As they make their way through Norway and the Norwagian Fjords , a number of cruise lines make a stop at Oslo as part of their itineraries. Cruises to Oslo take passengers into a bustling small town that is home to a plethora of cultural sites and has a warm and inviting vibe.

Cruises to Oslo, Norway

Oslo, Norway

When most people think of capital cities, the first pictures that come to mind are usually of urban sprawl and gritty lifestyles devoid of any connection to nature. That is not the case in Scandinavia, where the vast outdoors is an important part of the culture and worldview. Instead of developing towns to conquer nature, the Nordics have constructed them to blend in with it, and the Norwegian capital is a prime illustration of this.

Therefore, Oslo offers a unique blend of city life and easy access to the wild outdoors. This allows plenty of room for nature to thrive in the midst of the city, and it is this feature of Nordic design that permeates all elements of local culture. Outdoor sports like kayaking, skiing, hiking, and cycling are as popular in the capital as they are in the countryside, and the stylish simplicity of modern Norwegian art and architecture appears to reflect this enjoyment of a simple way of life.

However, this is not to say that Oslo is rough and unrefined. The town has also emerged as a center for modern architecture. In recent years, world-class architects have added modern landmarks, a completely new skyline has emerged, and city development projects that alter existing neighborhoods and create new ones have begun.

The city also has a superb array of sophisticated art galleries and fascinating museums. The National Gallery, for example, houses a diverse collection of works by prominent Norwegian painters, including Edvard Munch’s classic painting The Scream. The Viking Ship Museum teaches visitors about one of the world’s most mythologized civilizations, while the Holmenkollen Ski Jump and Museum offers an exhilarating look at how skiing has influenced Norwegian culture.

The popularity of Scandinavian cuisine is also at an all-time high these days, with three Michelin-starred restaurants in Oslo. Maaemo is the only restaurant in Scandinavia with two Michelin stars. It uses only local, organic ingredients to make traditional dishes from the area.

Top 10 attractions in Oslo

Vigelandsparken sculpture park.

The 80-acre Vigelandsparken Sculpture Park in western Oslo features 212 sculptures by Gustav Vigeland. Every year over one million locals and tourists visit the park, which is open around the clock daily.

The Norwegian Opera & Ballet

The Oslo Opera House, situated in the Bjørvika neighborhood, is a marble and glass structure that offers award-winning architecture and world-class opera and ballet performances. The roof of the Opera House is available to the public, and walking on it is a popular activity.

Holmenkollen

The well-known Holmenkollen Ski Jump has recently been refurbished. The world’s oldest Ski Museum and an observation deck with panoramic views of the city are part of the new state-of-the-art ski jump.

Akershus Fortress

The great buildings and museums at this 13th-century stronghold in the city center showcase Oslo’s rich history. The stronghold is also a popular recreational spot with stunning views of the harbor.

Viking Ship Museum

The Viking Ship Museum displays Viking ship discoveries from Gokstad, Oseberg, and Tune, as well as additional Viking tomb finds from the Oslo Fjord. The museum houses the world’s two best-preserved wooden Viking ships from the 9th century, as well as miniature boats, sledges, an ornate cart, equipment, tools, harnesses, textiles, and domestic objects.

National Gallery

The National Gallery, founded in 1837, houses Norway’s biggest public collection of paintings, drawings, and sculptures. The Scream and Madonna by Edvard Munch, as well as paintings by Cézanne and Manet, are among the gallery’s main attractions. The permanent exhibition features highlights from the collection as well as national icons from the romantic era through the mid-nineteenth century. International painters and sculptors, especially the French impressionists, are also represented. Princesses, trolls, and other fairy tale creatures from the museum’s wide collections can be found in the Fairy Tale Room. You can try out soft and hard pencils in the new Drawing Room. Gustav Vigeland’s Mother and Child (1907) sculpture has been placed in the center of the room to inspire you.

Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum complex, located in eastern Oslo, comprises the Zoological Museum and the Geological Museum. The museum buildings are surrounded by the Botanical Garden, which has 7,500 types of plants from all over the world.

TusenFryd has around 30 attractions, including rollercoasters, kiddie rides, and a water park. Norway’s largest amusement park, open from April to October, is located just 20 minutes south of Oslo.

Fram Museum

The world’s most famous polar ship, Fram, is housed in Oslo’s Fram Museum. Visitors can board the ship and learn how Norway’s polar explorers lived and thrived in the world’s harshest areas over a century ago.

Norwegian Museum of Cultural History

The Norsk Folkemuseum, as it is known in Norwegian, is located at Bygdøy in Oslo and is one of the world’s oldest and largest open-air museums. It is open all year and contains 155 ancient structures from all around Norway, including its own old town and a stave church dating back to roughly 1250 AD.

Can you help to advice on the initial plan? I will start to book hotel/airbnb along the way. We are mostly interested in nature sight view for photography, short hike is fine, but dont want to have any extensive hikes.

Day 1: Arrival in Oslo (8/7), pick up car and drive to hotel

Day 2: Oslo to either Rjukan or Geilo (preferred?), stay there

Day 3: Rjukan or Geilo to Bergen stay there, drive around, waterfall, floyen funicular, stay at Bergen

Day 4: a fjord cruise or drive around for short hikes or to Sotra, stat at Bergen

Day 5: Bergen to Flam , stay in Flam

Day 6: Flam to Geiranger, stay there. Or for shorter drive, go to Lillehammer instead.

Day 7: Drive back to Oslo, relax there.

Day 8: (8/14) flight at 5pm, explore a bit around the city in the morning, return car , get to airport around 2pm.

Any special reason for going to Flåm? Are you doing the railway tour?

Why do you mention Lillehammer? Not an obvious choice for a summer trip in Norway ( more winter - skiing)

I wouldn’t recommend either Flåm or Geiranger, for several reasons. Both just a couple of hundred inhabitants in small villages overflowing with cruise ship passengers , several thousands.

With a car you can choose nice area to stay and in addition experience the fjords and scenery.

https://en.visitbergen.com

Bergen, Fløibanen, drive around and waterfall in one day. Think you need 2-3 days for that. The famous waterfall tour inland from Bergen is recommended for 2 days. Maybe stay some nice place in Hardanger, like Ullensvang hotel. Then you get fjord, scenery and waterfall in one go.

Skip Flåm and Geiranger and concentrate around Bergen and Hardanger

cruise norway fjords from oslo

D2: Rjukan is a crack in the bedrock, known for its waterfall, powerplant and Gausta summit. Geilo is a winter resort but summer activities too.

D3: Rjukan to Bergen is 6-7 hours, so there is not much left of the day after a leisurely drive. Don't expect to use the car inside the city, downtown is compact and there is very little parking.

D5: By car you dont need to focus on Flåm. Go to any other fjordside village in the area. Aurland, Kaupanger, Solvorn, Balestrand.

D8: You can drop off car at airport and use train into city.

thanks guys - I modified a bit following the advice above. Pls take a look:

Day 2: Pick up car , drive to Rjukan, stay there

Day 3: Rjukan to Hardanger stay there

Day 4: To Bergen , a fjord cruise or drive around for short hikes

Day 5: Bergen to Stalheim/Aurland, stay in Aurland

Day 6: Aurland to Balestrand, then stay around Sonoalsfjora?

Day 7: Sognoalsfjora to Kaupanger, then drive back to Oslo, return car

Day 8: (8/14) flight at 5pm, explore a bit around the city in the morning by train, get to airport around 2pm.

any suggestions on where to stay along the way? i have first and last day in Oslo , then Rjukan, Hardanger, Bergen, Aurland, Sonoals in between.

any suggestions on where to stay along the way?

In your itinerary one of your chosen places is Aurland. Aurland is also one of the options in the NIN tour. I really don’t think it’s necessary to do the

” Flåm trip” for the reasons mentioned before and for the price. I haven’t checked but there could be 3500 cruise ship passengers that day.

You will stay in Aurland and drive through Hardangerfjord , plenty fjords for you.

Otherwise this plan seems much more interesting

cruise norway fjords from oslo

Day 7 - Why mention Kaupanger, hardly an interesting or relevant place?

Please try not to confuse people with dates and times by using international conventions.

How to see this incredible viking ship reconstruction in norway.

The replica Myklebust Ship is taken into the fjord on special occasions.

More than a thousand years ago, Norse explorers set sail from Scandinavia in search of new opportunities, marking the dawn of the Viking Age.

With its rich archaeological sites and burial ship discoveries offering a direct link to the era of raiding and trading that reshaped the medieval world, Norway is one of the leading destinations in the world to learn more about this iconic era.

Norway’s star Viking Age attractions—the world-famous Oseberg, Gokstad and Tune Viking ships—have been off public display for several years now pending careful reconstruction of their museum home in Oslo.

But, while the hotly-anticipated opening of the Museum of the Viking Age is still more than two years away, there are other wonderful opportunities to explore Viking history throughout Norway.

See The Myklebust Viking Ship

One of the most notable opportunities is found in the heart of the Norwegian fjords. The reconstructed Myklebust Viking ship is the star attraction at Sagastad, a new Viking Age museum in Nordfjordeid.

The modern, purpose-built waterfront building features large rear doors and a ramp down to the fjord to facilitate launching of the vessel, something that happens on special occasions.

The Sagastad museum has been purpose-built to house the Myklebust viking ship replica.

Visitors can board the vessel using a gangway and admire the intricate woodwork. Shields and helmets are available for a must-have photo opportunity.

The remainder of the museum is dedicated to the discovery of the remains of the Myklebust ship burial, the story of the chieftain buried with the boat, the story behind its reconstruction, and Nordfjordeid’s role in the Viking Age.

Don’t miss the English language film (playing on a loop) and the chance to play the role of a Viking in a VR game.

The Story Of Myklebust

In 1874, a young archaeologist traveled to Nordfjordeid to examine a significant burial mound. Although overshadowed by later discoveries of intact ships like Gokstad and Oseberg at the Oslofjord, the Nordfjord site played a pivotal role in our understanding of the Viking Age.

This striking mound contained the remnants of a Viking ship and numerous high-status objects from the late 9th century, hinting at the rich Norse culture and rituals of that era.

The remains of the ship, named the ‘Myklebust ship’, believed to have been burned during the burial rites, also contained traces of bones and an arrowhead, suggesting the chieftain or other prominent figure buried here died in battle.

Visitors to Sagastad can board and explore the Myklebust replica viking ship.

An exhibition at the museum speculates he may have been King Audbjørn, who according to the Icelandic sagas fought Harald Fairhair at the Second Battle of Solskjel .

The Myklebust ship has recently been brought to life once again by skilled boat builders from Bjørkedalen, a town with deep roots in traditional shipbuilding. The result has become a wonderful attraction for both locals and tourists.

Once a year, the Myklebust ship is taken out into the fjord, an event that attracts great interest locally and from across Norway. In future years, it’s hoped to sail the vessel more often, although its primary home will always be the museum.

How To Visit Sagastad

Sagastad is located on the waterfront in the heart of Nordfjordeid (also just called ‘Eid’), a small town at the end of the Eidsfjord, a branch of the much larger Nordfjord .

There’s plenty of other things to do in Nordfjordeid, including meeting Norwegian Fjord Horses and strolling past the wooden buildings of the historic town center. Positioned on the E39 highway, it’s a good choice to include in a road trip itinerary between Bergen/Stavanger and Ålesund/Trondheim.

Sagastad is open daily throughout June, July, and August, with restricted opening hours in May, September, and October. The museum is usually open in connection with cruise ship calls. Check the Sagastad website to confirm.

At the time of writing, entry is 230 Norwegian kroner, which is approximately $22.
