Dip stripping doors and furniture – what you should know

They sure don’t make things like they used to do they?! I’m talking about the beautiful details that go into an old home… the moldings, the hardware… the DOORS! It’s this exact reason, that my husband and I jumped at the opportunity to SAVE and remove 5 old doors (jams, hardware and all) from a 1920’s bungalow that was slated to be demolished. These gorgeous 1920 doors envelope a century of love, stories (oh the things these doors have seen!) and of course paint! 100 years and so many layers of paint! Not wanting to risk lead exposure, OR wanting to sand that many layers of varnish and paint, we decided to go the early (and surprisingly affordable) route… dip stripping doors!

Table of Contents

What is dip stripping?

Dip stripping is when wood or metal is placed in a large vat of solvent to help remove paint, varnish, and rust before refinishing. It’s the perfect application for ornate furniture that would be near impossible to sand or strip your self, and also… you guessed it… old doors!

In doing my research, I read that there are some pros and cons to dip stripping a door or a piece of furniture. I found it very interesting and have outline some of the pros and cons below:

dip stripped door

Pros of Dip Stripping

There are many pros to dip stripping a piece.

Dip stripping is a time saver! The fact that you don’t have to spend hours of time outside sanding layer after layer of paint, in my opinion, is a major PRO! Additionally, let’s keep in mind the amount of money you’d actually end up spending once you’ve purchased the correct sanding and stripping materials… hello sheets of sand paper!

Less clean up! If you have ever stipped a door or piece of furniture yourself, then you are all too familiar with the disgusting amount of clean up that comes from stripping a century worth of old paint! No thanks!

Dip stripping a piece is safer. Older pieces may contain lead paint or chemicals that can be harmful to your health. You can always test for lead (and it is definitely recommended!), but it’s always best to let the professionals handle something like this! The health risk to you isn’t worth the money saved to do-it-yourself.

You can easily restore a family heirloom. Not all dipping processes are an inexpensive option, however in the instance of restoring a family heirloom, the option is priceless.

dip stripping furniture

Cons of Dip Stripping

Dip stripping limitations.

You cannot dip strip anything with particle board, particle board, plywood or certain types of veneered furniture. The entire piece has to be solid wood. To be entirely sure that your piece is a good candidate for dip stripping, make sure to bring it into your local dip n strip company. It is hard to judge from a picture whether a piece is solid wood. Some furniture, particularly those from decades like the 1940’s, manufacturers created a product that looked very much looked like wood, but was actually a pressed product formed by sawdust and cardboard. Furniture of this kind cannot be dipped, or it will fall apart. It’s better to ask in person and be safe than sorry!

You need to be careful with the piece! Many wood pieces are not one solid piece of wood, but rather they are made of joined pieces. Given that fact, you want to make sure that the piece being dipped doesn’t fall apart during the process. Interior doors, for example, are put together using multiple pieces so there is potential for the harsh chemicals to break down those joints and cause problems. Check with your local Dip Stripping company to discuss the option of a slow dip and dry method, in which the door is dipped, gently scrubbed and then left to dry before they repeat again. Repetitive dipping may be necessary, depending on the amount of paint layers.

For our doors, I thought a lot about this! The last thing I wanted to do was spend $165 per door and have them fall apart on us! However, after inspecting our doors and the fact that they were well constructed, one-panel doors, we felt confident in moving forward with our decision to dip them.

dip trip what is it

After the doors are dip stripped, how do you prep them?

Once a piece of furniture (or door in our case) has been dipped it looks amazing! However, you are not completely done and ready to stain yet! The dip strip process raises the grain of the wood leaving a “furry” texture if you will. Once we received our doors back, we gave each one a light sanding, working our way down from a 120 grit to a very fine 220 grit sandpaper to give you the smoothest finish.

dip stripping doors and sanding them down after

I know it sounds like a lot of work, but truthfully, our doors came out so beautifully, and it is a pretty quick and easy process to get rid of the “furry” grain and prep them for stain!

Door Jams – You can’t dip strip them

When you are installing antique doors, you may or may not have the existing door jam with them. Because we demoed these doors out of an old home ourselves, we had the convenience of grabbing the jams while we were there. If you do not have the door jams, your trim carpenter should be able to build them out for you. I am not sure what the exact price is, however, a local salvage yard did tell us that they could do it (with the purchase of one of their doors) for $165 per door. However, definitely check with your local professionals to get an exact price.

old door jams

However, even though we do have the jams for our antique doors, they still needed a bit of prep work to remove the existing paint and get them ready to receive either stain or paint. Admittedly, I was a bit nervous about this process… it seemed like a lot of work for some simple door jams, that perhaps could just be rebuilt. However, SAVING is the name of the game with the barn build, so anywhere we can put a little sweat equity in is always a plus! And… spoiler alert… it was actually super simple to strip down the door jams! All that was required was a little time 🙂 More on the door jams and how to easily strip them coming soon!

Move Over Staycations, ‘Toe Dip Trips’ Are the Travel Trend of 2021

Author image: Portrait of Dara Katz

Travel? Never heard of her. But after a year-plus of grief, stress and chaos (school closings…and reopenings…and closings…), you could really use a break. And while you’re not ready to plan that European jet-setting tour you had planned for the family pre-Covid, if you hear the words “staycation” one more time, you might blow a gasket. This is where the “toe-drip trip” comes in. Here’s everything you need to know about the trend.

What is a toe-dip trip exactly?

Coined by Travelocity, a toe-dip trip is a shorter post-pandemic getaway to help rebuild confidence in traveling before taking booking bucket-list trips. And according to a recent survey from the company, it’s a pretty popular concept: 60 percent of travelers say they’re ready to roam again and are planning a post-pandemic trip within the next nine months. “We may be dreaming of that big bucket-list trip , but what travelers are actually planning so far this year are visits to familiar destinations nearby, weekend getaways or road trips and beach trips ,” says Melissa Dohmen, travel expert from Travelocity.

Does this mean travel is perfectly safe again?

We wish. Wanderlust may have a grasp on our magical thinking, but we can’t forget we’re still in the midst of a pandemic. And even if you’re vaccinated, your kids aren’t, and there’s risk that you and your crew could unknowingly spread (or get!) the virus. So, if you are planning a toe-dip trip, make sure to consider Covid precautions through every step of the way—your family should still wear masks, social distance and keep your hands clean.

So, where are people planning these toe-dip trips?

Of course, it depends on where you live so that you can make your getaway as convenient and as safe as possible—for example, a family from Boston traveling to the Muir Woods in California would be considered a real trip (remember those?), not a toe-dip. With that in mind, here the top regional spots, according to the Travelocity’s experts, for toe-dip trips across the country.

1. Southeast: Tennessee

The Volunteer State is the top family-friendly destination so far in 2021 with four of its cities in the top 20 most reserved destinations, according to Travelocity: Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, Nashville and Chattanooga .

2. West: Lake Tahoe, Big Bear Lake and Lake Havasu City

Families out West have their eyes on these road-trip destinations, in addition to smaller ski towns with mountain views like Mammoth Lakes, California and Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

3. Midwest: Chicago, Detroit and Minneapolis

Big cities in the Midwest are the greatest in demand for weekend getaways and shorter stays (two nights or less). But Kansas City, Lincoln, Nebraska, Indianapolis, Oklahoma City , and Columbus, Ohio are also in the top 25 most reserved by families.

4. Miscellaneous: Orlando and Vegas

Even in pandemic times, these resort locations remain popular for families with their extra amenities and free cancellations.

Editor’s note: Please remember to follow all social distancing guidelines and local travel recommendations.

What Does Dip Mean? – Meaning, Uses and More

dip trip what is it

What Does Dip Mean?

The term dip has multiple meanings depending on the context. In this case, its primary meaning is to leave or depart. It can also be used as a shortened form of “dipshit,” which is a derogatory term for a stupid or annoying person. For example, if someone cuts you off in traffic, you might call them a dip. The term originated as a milder version of “dipshit” to offend fewer people. It can be used both online and offline, and most people will recognize it as an insult. However, if you prefer a different insult, you can try goon, douchebag, or tool. Here are some examples of how to use “dip” in conversation:

  • “I’m not feeling well, so I’m going to dip out early and head home.”
  • “That guy is such a dip . I don’t like how he treats people.”
  • “I think I’m gonna dip outta here .”
  • “You’re a stupid dip , you know that!?”
  • “When I saw the Vanilla Ice CD in my date’s CD player, I knew I had to dip .”

It’s important to note that “dip” does not have a sexual meaning. It is simply used as an insult or to describe leaving a place.

What Does Dip Mean From a Girl?

When a girl uses the term dip , it can have a similar meaning as it does for guys. She might use it to refer to leaving or departing from a place. For example, she might say “I’m gonna dip out early” to indicate that she is leaving a party or event.

However, girls may also use “dip” in a slightly different way compared to everyone else. Here are some possible meanings and uses:

To avoid or dodge something : Girls might use “dip” to describe avoiding a situation or getting out of something they don’t want to do. For instance, she might say “I need to dip from this conversation” to indicate that she wants to end the discussion.

As a playful or flirty term : Girls sometimes use “dip” in a playful or flirty way when talking to someone they’re interested in. It can be used as a lighthearted way to say goodbye or indicate that they’re leaving the conversation. For example, she might say “I had a great time chatting with you, but I gotta dip for now.”

To describe someone’s behavior : Girls might use “dip” to describe someone who is acting foolishly or annoyingly. It can be used as a lighthearted insult among friends. For instance, she might say “He’s such a dip, always causing drama.”

If a girl uses “dip” in conversation with you, it’s generally best to take it at face value and respond accordingly. If she’s using it playfully, you can respond with humor or flirtation. If she’s using it to describe someone’s behavior, you can acknowledge her comment or share your own thoughts on the matter.

Remember, slang terms can have different meanings and uses depending on the individual and the context of the conversation.

  • Girl A: Hey, I’m gonna dip out early. I have an early morning tomorrow.
  • Girl B: No problem, girl! Catch you later. Have a good night!
  • Girl A: Ugh, I need to dip from this group chat. It’s getting too chaotic.
  • Girl B: Haha, I feel you. Sometimes it’s best to avoid the drama.
  • Guy: I had a great time talking to you tonight.
  • Girl: Me too! But I gotta dip for now. Talk to you soon!

  • Girl B: Seriously, always causing trouble. Let’s stay away from him.
  • Guy: Alright, I should get going now.
  • Girl: Aw, already? Well, it was nice hanging out with you. Don’t be a stranger!

What Does Dip Mean From a Guy?

When a guy uses the term dip , it can have similar meanings as it does for girls. He might use it to refer to leaving or departing from a place, just like girls do. For example, he might say “I’m gonna dip out early” to indicate that he is leaving a party or event.

However, guys may also use “dip” in slightly different ways compared to girls. Here are some possible meanings and uses:

To avoid or dodge something : Guys might use “dip” to describe avoiding a situation or getting out of something they don’t want to do. For instance, he might say “I need to dip from this conversation” to indicate that he wants to end the discussion.

As a casual or nonchalant term : Guys sometimes use “dip” in a more casual or nonchalant way when talking to their friends. It can be used as a laid-back way to say goodbye or indicate that they’re leaving the conversation. For example, he might say “Alright, I’m gonna dip now. Catch you later.”

To describe someone’s behavior : Guys might use “dip” to describe someone who is acting foolishly or annoyingly, similar to how girls use it. It can be used as a lighthearted insult among friends. For instance, he might say “He’s such a dip, always causing trouble.”

If a guy uses “dip” in conversation with you, it’s generally best to take it at face value and respond accordingly. If he’s using it casually, you can respond with a casual goodbye or acknowledge his departure. If he’s using it to describe someone’s behavior, you can share your own thoughts on the matter or join in on the lighthearted banter.

Remember, slang terms can have different meanings and uses depending on the individual and the context of the conversation. So, don’t be afraid to ask for clarification if you’re unsure!

  • Guy 1: Hey, I’m thinking about skipping the party tonight. Are you going?
  • Guy 2: Yeah, I might dip too. I’m not really feeling it.
  • Guy 1: Bro, did you see that huge line for the new restaurant?

  • Guy 1: Dude, did you hear about the crazy traffic on the highway?
  • Guy 2: Yeah, I’m definitely dipping out of work early today. No way I’m sitting in that mess.
  • Guy: I can’t believe how crowded this concert is. It’s insane!
  • Girl: I know, right? Let’s dip to the back where it’s less crowded and we can actually breathe.

Dipped literally refers to something dunked in some kind of substance. But as a slang term, dipped means “to leave” or “to be well-dressed.” On a slightly more violent note, it can also refer to getting stabbed.

Where does dipped come from.

dip trip what is it

The word dip is very old and has acquired many senses over the centuries. Its most literal meaning of putting something into liquid is recorded in the 14th century. In the 1660s, dip took on the meaning of “inclining downward,” as in the stock markets dipped .

By the late 18th century,  dipped food   were items been lowered into and raised from some kind of liquid: Think chocolate- dipped strawberries. (Yum!)

Sometime in the early 20th century,  dip took on the meaning of “to leave” in black slang. Slightly later, this meaning also surfaced in Australia. It’s not clear exactly where this meaning comes from. It’s possible that it’s a metaphorical extension of  dipped , as in a person just temporarily dipping in and out of a situation. Like a strawberry.

Whatever its exact origin,  dipped often means left  (a place), as in the 2013 song “Lone” by Tyler, The Creator where he raps: “‘ Cause when my mom dipped, she was the one that gave a fuck .”

Dipped also refers to someone being well-dressed in black American slang. This meaning is attested by at least the early 2000s. If someone’s dipped , it means they’re looking sharp in some nice clothing or otherwise wearing flashy swag .

Just cause a nigga can't keep you dipped in designer clothes & bags don't mean he not a real nigga! If that man make sure you eat everyday & do everything he can for you that's all that matters. We hella young TF! The internet got people heads fucked up! — SweetHeatEsthetics💕 (@ThatsMy_Pye) December 8, 2017

Occasionally, getting dipped in Black American slang can refer to getting stabbed, as in getting a knife dipped in them (not-so yum). An example comes from the track “Red Opps” by 21 Savage where he raps the threat: “ You don’t pull up on the Ave[nue], pussy boy, you get dipped .”

TAKE A TOE-DIP TRIP FOR YOUR NEXT VACATION

TAKE A TOE-DIP TRIP FOR YOUR NEXT VACATION

Have you ever heard of a toe-dip trip? These are trips, usually a vacation, that aren’t as long as the regular one- and two-week vacations we’re used to, but they’re just long enough for you to get a handle on traveling once again.   The term was originally coined by Travelocity , and it involves going to a new destination, dipping your toe in to try it out, and then going back home.

Hence the name.

If you are still on the fence to travel, we think a toe-dip trip is a safer way to explore a new city while still taking the appropriate measures. You can take a short 3-day/2-night vacation, exercise the right amount of safety, and minimize your and your family’s risks.

Here are some ideas for short mini-vacations that you could take this year.

Orlando, Florida:  The “House of the Mouse” is one of the best cities for a toe-dip trip, according to Travelocity. Disney World is back open and the theme park has placed safety protocols for all who enter the happy place, including reducing the number of guests. You can book a one-night or two-night stay at one of its great hotels, and have fun while you are there. ( Alternative:  If you don’t want to go to Disney World, or you want something quieter, head about an hour east to Melbourne Beach, Florida, for a quiet beach town. It’s about 30 minutes south of Cocoa Beach.)

Lake Tahoe, California:   Another place on Travelocity’s list for a quick getaway. A beautiful piece of land located between Nevada and California; it is known to be great for family connection. During s short stay, you can ski the slopes or canoe the large lake just before you enjoy fine dining in a nice restaurant.

Louisville, Kentucky:   A quiet big city, there’s plenty to do and see, whether it’s the great restaurants and coffee shops on Bardstown Road (where the locals eat), or all along Fourth Avenue (where the tourists eat), you can visit the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory right in the middle of downtown, or the   Speed Art Museum   near the University of Louisville.

Lake Havasu City, Arizona:   Located in Arizona, this place has a lot of options for a nice getaway. You can enjoy local events in the area, boat across the large lake, ride hot air balloons, and get some great dining and entertainment options.

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma:   This city is filled with fun things to do for an overnight stay. You can choose from visiting the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum, go to Scissortail Park, visit the Conestoga Wagons and Teepees at the Orr Family Farm, or walk around the Oklahoma City National Art Museum. Again, be sure to check out the great food scene, as a lot of Southwestern foodies have set up shop in the city.

Columbia, South Carolina:   This wonderful city in South Carolina is a great spot if you live nearby. From the Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Gardens to the Columbia Canal and Riverbank Park, families can enjoy nature at its finest in a day or two. The Columbia Museum of Art also has a diverse collection of art, and there are plenty of historic sites for you history buffs. And don’t miss the Soda City Street Market on Saturdays in downtown Columbia.

Of course, any place can be a toe-dip trip if you want to give it a try. Mackinac Island, Michigan; Savannah, Georgia; Reno, Nevada; Augusta, Georgia. All you need is a hotel, a few sites, and attractions, or even a campground and a large lake. What Does ‘Bean Dip’ Mean on Love Is Blind ? The Controversy Explained

dip trip what is it

If you’re settling in to watch Love Is Blind season 6 , a perfectly reasonable and equally bizarre question might have come up for you: Exactly what does bean dip mean? Disappointingly, in this case, it’s not a guac-like situation nor any form of dip. The phrase has an entirely different meaning that has nothing to do with dip if you’ve been watching the latest season of the Netflix hit show.

Listen, we’re not sure how we ended up here either, but if you’re wondering “what does bean dip mean on Love Is Blind?,” well, so are we. But you may not like the answer.

We hardly need to remind you that Love Is Blind sees several men and women blindly speed date via “pods,” where they’re able to speak to one another but can’t see what the other person looks like. Over 10 days of intense talking, couples are able to decide whether they want to get engaged to the person they’ve been speaking to in just under two weeks, all unseen.

After the proposals, the couples get to finally meet in person and head off on a “honeymoon” trip along with the other couples—where they’re able to get to know one another better and meet the rest of the cast. It was during this fateful time that bean-dip-gate came to be, specifically over a very awkward moment between couples Laura and Jeramey and Clay and AD , when it was revealed that Laura had made a bean dip joke.

What does bean dip mean in Love Is Blind Season 6?

At a cocktail party in episode six, Laura jokes to her fiancé Jeramey that he should “bean dip” AD.

Then, in conversation with Clay and AD , Jeramey explains the joke much to the visible discomfort of Clay and AD, with him saying, “She told me to do it to you, and I was like, ‘I’m gonna get fucking cancelled!’”

Clearly taken aback, AD responded, “Do not, I will fight you,” before AD’s partner Clay said the joke had offended him.

As Jeramey joked that Laura was trying to set him up for “some bullshit,” AD explained to Clay and Jimmy that: “a bean dip is like this titty smack ... [Laura] smacked the shit out of my titties.”

Urban Dictionary explains a bean dip as to “raise the underboob of a man or woman with your index and second finger,” so we can totally see why things got so awkward so quickly—and why Clay and AD were clearly uncomfortable with the entire situation.

Another internet definition suggests that a bean dip is to “flick a man or woman’s breast with an index finger.”

Of course, suggesting that someone should do this to a woman out of the blue and uninvited is never okay—and plenty of Love Is Blind viewers were quick to weigh in on social media.

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

AD walked away from the conversation, returning later with Laura who came to clarify that Jeramey was “making something out of nothing” and reiterating that the comment had only been made “in a joking way.”

Following this entirely painful interaction, AD later added to Laura: “I think it’s funny to us, but to Clay—it’s not funny.”

Speaking to People about the situation, AD said that it was simply a joke that hadn’t gone down well, reinforcing that there are no bad feelings between the two.

“I don’t really relish on that moment too much because it didn’t really affect me and I’m kind of shocked that it affected them so much,” she said. “So, I don't really think about that often.… It was a girl’s thing that translated and went left, I guess.”

How to Dip and Strip Wood Doors and Furniture?

Dip and Strip Wood Doors

Stripping the old paint or varnish from metal or wood furniture is not always easy.

The process is even more difficult with items like chairs that come with uneven surfaces like decorative spindles.

Fortunately, there are advanced methods like “dip stripping” that make the job easier and quicker.

If you haven’t heard of it before, no worries!

Here in this detailed guide, I will cover all the details regarding the process, how it works, and what materials can actually be stripped using this method.

So, without any delay, let’s dive in…

In This Article We Will Cover:

What is Dip Stripping?

Simply put “Dip and strip” is a paint stripping method that makes it easy to remove all types of finishes from wood or metal items whether small or large.

The process is often utilized by furniture refinishing stores in which they make use of a dip and strip tank that is filled with a stripper solution to do all the hard work.

Items made of metal or wood are then dipped in the solvent to remove paint, varnish, rust, or other finishes to prepare the surface for priming, repainting, and refinishing.

If you are wondering, what pieces can you actually dip strip, let me tell you there are a variety of different things.

Some of these include:

  • Metal gates
  • Automotive parts
  • Cast iron radiators
  • Wrought iron furniture
  • Wooden doors & Windows

With that said, there are certain items that cannot be dip-stripped down.

Or rather we should say they are not safe to strip that way.

These include veneered furniture, items made of particleboard, pressed cardboard, MDF, or plywood.

If you try dip stripping the fake wood (or the pressed items made of sawdust, cardboard, thin veneer, or chipboard) they may fall apart during the process and all you will get is a damaged broken-down piece that cannot be fixed.

Therefore, the items you want to dip strip safely should be either made of metal or of solid wood.

How to Dip Strip the Furniture?

The dip and strip paint removal process is practically more useful if you have many pieces to strip in lesser time.

But before you try to dip strip your wood furniture, metal doors, or aluminum windows, keep in mind that the stripper used can be highly toxic as well as corrosive.

So, unless you know well what you are doing, it’s not the recommended option for DIYers and homeowners who want to strip a few pieces in their basement or garage.

Once you have planned for your project, find an open place for the job and get ready by putting on safety glasses and rubber gloves.

Then follow these steps…

Step 1 – Prepare the dip tank

Dip tanks for paint removal are usually metal-made and are rectangular in shape with sides about 1 foot high.

Place the tank on a large flat surface and pour gel or liquid stripper into it.

Fill the stripper about 1-2 inches above the bottom of the tank so that you can lay down the furniture piece or door into it.

Step 2 – Place the furniture into it

Place your door or furniture flat in the tank. Make sure you dip one piece at a time.

Rotate the object in the tank so that all the sides get coated with a stripper.

Then with an old paintbrush spread the stripper liquid on areas that may have not been covered well.

Step 3 – Allow the stripper to work

Let the paint stripper sit and work for some time.

You will know when the paint starts bubbling up, usually in 1-2 hours.

Step 4 – Scrape the paint off with a scraper

Once the paint gets softened, use a paint scraper tool to scrape off the paint from the surface as much as you can.

As you do this, let the peeled paint chips fall into the tank.

This will help to remove much of the paint, but the curved surfaces including corners, edges, and joints will still have some paint left that you will need to remove.

Step 5 – Dip the piece again and strip it with steel wool

To remove the paint that is still left, dip your furniture piece once again in the tank.

Spread the stripper to all the surfaces with a paintbrush and rub the surface with coarse steel wool.

Remember that if the item you are trying to strip has several coats of paint or finishes, you may need to perform this step 2-3 times.

Step 6 – Remove from the tank and rinse the stripper

After you have removed all (or most) of the paint from the surface successfully, remove the wood/metal item from the tank.

Securely place it on a plastic drop cloth and rinse the stripper completely.

You can either use a rinsing product from the same brand as the stripper or can use your garden hose to jet spray.

Step 7 – Allow the furniture to dry and dispose of the stripper

After you have given a good rinse to your object, let it dry naturally for a couple of hours.

If you notice any residue, paint, or finish still remaining on the surface, use a pad of steel wool dampened in lacquer thinner to remove the leftover residue.

Finally, do not forget to throw away the used stripper (from the tank) and a drop cloth when you are done with your project.

Dispose of them securely in a bin where it is out of reach from animals and kids.

Pros and Cons of Professional Dip Stripping Service

After you have grasped all the information about dip stripping, you now know how the process exactly works.

Since the task can turn out to be messy if you are not careful, in my opinion, you should always leave the dip stripping paint removal method to professionals and not try it yourself.

Here are the good and bad, of hiring a furniture dipping service near you versus removing all the paint yourself by hand.

  • Saves a good amount of time
  • Can work great for complex pieces
  • No mess around your garage, or basement
  • Prepares your antique furniture for refinishing
  • You do not require any experience or skills to strip the paint
  • Safe and risk-free as the project is handled by the professionals
  • Can be time-consuming
  • Isn’t suitable for all types of wood

Furthermore, you may face challenges when you are trying to strip rusty metal pieces or wood items with joints that are filled with a kind of filler.

Dipping and stripping can cause the filler to come right off these items.

Also, when you are dipping the doors, these are usually not a single piece. You will certainly have to face the same problem when dealing with such items.

Final Thoughts

While dipping and stripping the wood and metal pieces is time-saving, it can turn out to be messy and time-consuming if you are not skilled at it.

If you have several items to be stripped it’s best to find a service in your area and leave it to professionals rather than trying to do it on your own.

This will not only save you a good time but also your antique piece of wooden door or metal furniture.

Share All sharing options for: Which Crab Dip Recipe Is Worth the Splurge?

There’s something about dip that just sets off a sense of primal delight. It’s that combination of eating with your hands and the sheer spectacle of a big bowl of (usually and in the best cases) something creamy and cheesy. And crab dip? That’s absolutely one of my favorites. It’s why I love crab rangoon; they’re basically full of crab dip. When it comes to classic crab dip — the kind that’s meant to be served hot — I expect a few things: Old Bay seasoning for sure, hunks of lump crabmeat, and a level of creaminess that would make some people reach for their Lactaid.

In pursuit of the perfect crab dip, I tested some popular hot crab dip recipes from around the internet, all with a side of buttery crackers. As it turns out, most recipe developers use a very similar crab dip structure, but little tweaks to it can have big effects on the end result. Here’s how my testing shook out.

Old Bay Crab Dip Recipe

McCormick’s official Old Bay crab dip recipe is as simple as it gets: a base that’s equal parts mayonnaise and cream cheese, a little cheddar, lump crabmeat, Old Bay (obviously), and ground mustard. It requires nothing but a bowl and a spatula, and as long as you remember to soften the cream cheese in advance, you can whip up the dip in under five minutes, baking time not included. I did the math and found that this recipe had a 1:1 ratio of crabmeat to creamy base, not including the cheddar.

As soon as the dip came out of the oven, I immediately wanted to plunge a cracker into it. Bubbly around the edges and covered with a layer of lightly browned cheese, it had the indulgence I expect from a crab dip. The Old Bay added essential flavor and saltiness, while the ground mustard (don’t skip it!) contributed crucial sharpness and amplified similar notes in the cheddar. That this dip is so mayo-based was made clear by both its flavor and texture (whether this is a good or bad thing depends on you). It was the least runny of the recipes I tried, holding its shape wherever I dug into it with my spoon.

Crab Dip (Maryland Style)

Sally McKenney, Sally’s Baking Recipes

Where McCormick’s crab dip recipe uses equal parts cream cheese and mayo, Sally McKenney’s cuts the mayo with some sour cream. This recipe, which comes up first when you Google “Maryland crab dip,” also calls for an ample amount of seasoning. In addition to Old Bay and ground mustard, it uses lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce (technically optional, but I went for it). As with McCormick’s crab dip, cheddar is mixed in and sprinkled on top. Where the recipe most differs from McCormick’s is in the amount of effort required: McKenney calls for using a handheld or stand mixer, which I felt was unnecessary after trying the finished dip.

This recipe came out of the oven looking similar to the McCormick version, which is to say, how a crab dip should look, in my opinion. It was slightly thinner and runnier but still had a pleasant creamy texture that reminded me of mac and cheese. That made sense given that this recipe has a cup more of cheddar than McCormick’s. It was well-seasoned, though a bit cheese-heavy, if I’m nitpicking. The texture of the crab came through nicely, more like the creamy base was coating it than competing with it. The ratio of crabmeat to base fell right in the middle of the other two recipes I tested, and it definitely felt like the middle ground.

Healthy Hot Crab Dip

Katie Webster, Healthy Seasonal Recipes

What makes this crab dip recipe “healthy” is that it relies on a base of mostly reduced-fat cream cheese, with some Greek yogurt and a small amount of mayonnaise (a scant 3 tablespoons, compared to the McCormick’s full cup). Instead of the more typical cheddar, it calls for a small amount of Parmesan. What the recipe lacks in rich ingredients it attempts to make up for in flavor, with a combination of Sriracha, Old Bay, lemon zest and juice, and scallions. Like McKenney’s recipe, it calls for a mixer. (As with McKenney’s recipe, I didn’t think it proved essential.)

The last time I tried a Greek yogurt-based substitution , I wasn’t too impressed: The yogurt’s tang announced itself too loudly. So my expectations were low here, especially since this dip looked pale and watery coming out of the oven. But I was surprised, upon first taste, by its distinctly vegetal flavor, which was likely due to the combination of scallions and the Old Bay’s celery seeds; even my tasting partner remarked on the celery flavor. The combination of the lemon and tart Greek yogurt was a little strong for my taste, but the more I ate, the more I actually appreciated the swap.

The base of this recipe is lighter, yes, but that turned out to be a good thing: It meant the chunks of crab stood out more, both in texture and flavor, instead of competing with a cup of mayo. This recipe also had the highest ratio of crabmeat to base (16 ounces to 14 ounces), which likely also helped to highlight the crab itself. Next time though, I’d probably cut back on the lemon and maybe even the scallion to lessen that green flavor.

Winner: A tie, perhaps?

Do you want your crab dip to highlight the crab, or do you want it to embody the decadently creamy mental image of crab dip? That’s the question that this decision comes down to. In terms of sheer luxury and richness, the winner is undeniably the McCormick recipe. However, a base that rich can also work to the opposite effect: It risks appearing as though it’s trying to compensate for a lack of seafood, and admittedly, it does compete a little with the crab. But if I were at a party and this dip was there too, you’d have a hard time pulling me away from the table. In other words, make this dip to impress.

By contrast, I also have to give the win to Katie Webster’s “healthy” version for the way it shines the spotlight on the crab. The dip’s lightness really lets the crab speak for itself, and If I’m spending $25 on eight ounces of lump crabmeat, I certainly want to taste it. I’d make this recipe again, with the caveat that I think it could be improved with substitutions borrowed from the other recipes: less lemon and scallion, a skosh more mayo, and cheddar instead of or in addition to parm. That, I think, would be the best of both worlds.

I’ll end on a note that none of the recipes specified: I understand the urge to dig in immediately, but as with any good lasagna or baked mac and cheese , I found that all of these dips were better once they’d cooled for at least 10 minutes.
