Best time to go on a road trip from Boston to Montreal

The busiest season in Boston runs from June to August — think baseball, festivals, and the droves of summer vacationers and tourists you'll be contending with for hotel rates and parking spaces.

Listen to the locals instead and get the quintessential Boston experience in the fall (between September and October) for warm breezy weather and temperatures in the upper 60 degrees Fahrenheit - perfect for sightseeing, concerts and dining al fresco.

Another plus for visiting in the fall means a chance to catch the ski season in Vermont, which runs from around November to April. Just remember to plan ahead and pack those extra layers if you're hoping to catch some snow.

You could make the trip during the spring, but be warned, you'll also likely experience a lot of rain which may affect some of the outdoor attractions you will want to visit.

If you want to avoid crowds, planning your visit outside of April would be preferable. The incredible Boston Marathon is usually held this month and attracts huge numbers of people from all over the world. You'll also find hotels difficult to book unless you've planned ahead.

This Map Will Take You On The Most Epic Montreal-Boston Road Trip Anyone's Ever Taken

This Map Will Take You On The Most Epic Road Trip From Montreal To Boston

  • Below are two itineraries for a road trip from Montreal to Boston .
  • From quaint New England villages to national forests, these are the detours to take along the 5-hour route between the two cities.
  • Find out where you should stop on your potential road trip to Boston below!
  • Visit MTLBlog for more headlines.

Boston and Montreal have a lot in common. Their metropolitan areas are similar in size, they both have colonial roots, and they both serve as the hub of economic and cultural activity for their geographic regions. Boston also happens to be the major American city that is closest to Montreal. The residents of the cities engage in a lot of informal exchange as a result. Both are popular road trip destinations for their respective residents, and many students in New England flee to Quebec for its cheap tuitions.

The routes between Boston and Montreal are therefore well-travelled. One path, via U.S. Route 89, takes drivers past the city of Burlington, through the Green Mountains of Vermont, and into southern New Hampshire before hitting Greater Boston.

The other itinerary involves a drive through the Eastern Townships of Quebec and the impressive White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Though not lacking in scenic views of the countryside, the five-hour trek between the two metropolises can become dull for those who use it most.

That's why we've put together this list of fun stops along the way. Below you'll find a list of cities and towns along two routes between Montreal and Boston. At the very bottom of this list is an interactive map that illustrates both journeys.

Consider taking a detour to visit one of these destinations in Quebec and northern New England the next time you find yourself on the road to Boston.

The busiest route from Montreal to Boston includes Quebec autoroutes 10, 35, and 133, and U.S. Route 89. These three stops are only possible along this path.

Burlington, Vermont

See on Instagram

The largest city in Vermont sits on the shore of Lake Champlain and commands stunning views of the largest lake in New England and the Adirondack mountains of New York.

In the last two decades, the city has earned a reputation as one of the hippest and most progressive places in the United States (Bernie Sanders was once mayor).

Today, visitors can peruse the cute shops lining the pedestrian-only Church Street, bike along the lake, and enjoy a burger while sitting on a dock.

Montpelier & Barre, Vermont

The Vermont town of Montpelier is the least populous American capital city but it's packed with charm. From the 19th century façades of State Street to the perennial skating rink in front of the State House, Montpelier makes for a fun stop on your way to or from Boston along Route 89.

Almost adjacent to the capital is the town of Barre, whose common (the central park in a typical New England town) is post-card perfect in the snow.

Hanover, New Hampshire

Hanover is a college town, home to Dartmouth, a member of the Ivy League. As such, it's home to everything you'd expect, including student bars and cafés, and a thriving arts scene. The town buzzes with youthful energy.

The colonial architecture of Dartmouth campus is also pretty darn beautiful.

An alternate route from Montreal to Boston takes drivers along Quebec autoroutes 10 and 55 to U.S. routes 91 and 93. These next five stops are only possible with this itinerary.

Magog, Quebec

Magog is a popular year-round destination in the Eastern Townships. The alternative route to Boston takes you right around the city. Take a stroll down rue Principale, grab some amazing poutine at Cantine Chez Paul, and sit by the incredibly difficult-to-type Lake Mephrémagog.

Stanstead, Quebec

Stanstead was once a single community that straddled the U.S.-Canada border. That all changed after 9/11 when the U.S. hardened its defences and put up physical barriers that divided the town.

Visitors can still visit the remnants of the binational town, however, like the dual library and opera house that sits right on the border. A line on the floor marks the division between the two countries. Americans are allowed to step a few feet across the border to read an informational tablet next to the building on the Canadian side.

Rue Canusa Street is similarly unusual. Residents on one side of the street live in Canada while their neighbours on the other side reside in the United States. These Americans live within the Canadian customs zone and have to cross the border to access schools and other services. Be sure to take a look at the license plates of parked cars on either side of the street, it's pretty amusing.

Littleton & Franconia, New Hampshire

The New Hampshire towns of Littleton and Franconia sit at the northern edge of the White Mountains National Forest. Littleton is known for its adorable town centre, complete with boutique shops, diners, and a pretty awesome brewery in an old mill. No visit to Littleton is complete without a walk through the covered bridge that crosses the Ammonoosuc River.

Franconia, meanwhile, is a destination for outdoor activities. The Flume Gorge, a series of waterfalls through a small canyon, is perhaps its most famous feature. It's an easy hike with some pretty spectacular views of the surrounding hills, including Liberty Mountain, whose peak is said to resemble the face of George Washington.

The towns are five minutes apart from each other and make for an easy stop.

Laconia, New Hampshire

Laconia is a city on New Hampshire's Lake Winnipesaukee, a glacial lake with hundreds of islands and lined with cute New England villages. In the summer months, Laconia is a recreational destination, featuring a famous drive-in theatre, beach, and tiny entertainment district (with arcades and bars) along the lakeshore.

When the cold hits, Laconia is a hub of activity for skiers and winter vacationers. The town centre has a collection of restaurants, bars, and shops.

If you have the time, take a drive through the village of Meredith, just a few miles north on the lakeshore.

Tilton, New Hampshire

Tilton is a shopping centre. It has an expansive outlet mall where Quebecer flock to take advantage of tax-free shopping (New Hampshire has no sales tax). Also nearby are all the chain restaurants and retailers that Canada lacks.

Get all your shopping done on your way to or from Boston.

U.S. Routes 89 and 93 converge in Concord, New Hampshire. The following stops are therefore possible no matter the route from Montreal.

Lawrence, Massachusetts

Lawrence is an old industrial city on the Merrimac River. Though it's no longer a manufacturing hub, it retains its 19th-century mill architecture. The city has a busy centre with plenty to see and do.

Lawrence is where the American labour movement got its start, so the city is full of historic sites to check out.

Salem & Marblehead, Massachusetts

These two stops represent the biggest detour on this list. Salem is, of course, a destination in itself. From colonial architecture to an adorable city centre with hundreds of stores and cafés, to its famous witchy history, Salem is a must-see. Visitors must be sure to visit the museums, including the Witch Museum and Peabody-Essex, a large and impressive collection of art and architecture (there's even an early-modern Chinese mansion right in the middle of the museum).

Adjacent to Salem is the town of Marblehead, which has little in the way of places to shop and eat but is famous for its narrow colonial streets, and bright, old homes. It's a lesser-known stop with plenty of Instagram fodder.

Cambridge, Massachusetts

Cambridge is part of the Boston metropolitan area (it borders the city) and is often lumped in with the Massachusetts capital in the popular imagination.

Begin with a walk past the colonial mansions of Brattle Street before hitting Harvard Square and campus. From there, walk all the way down Massachusetts Avenue through the bustling Central Square (with some of the best restaurants in Greater Boston) and MIT campus. You'll end up at the Mass Ave. bridge and Memorial Drive, which commands mesmerizing views of the Boston skyline across the Charles River.

That completes my list of recommended stops on the way to Boston from Montreal. This list also works in reverse for you Americans travelling to the Quebec metropolis.

Here's a map to help you find your way!

Tips on crossing the US/Canada border

As you’ll be crossing two countries, avoid a visa blunder and make sure to check the independent visa restrictions for both the US and Canada. The US has a reputation for stricter conditions but their Visa Waiver Program is available for most Europeans who wish to stay for up to 90 days. You’ll undergo a separate visa and passport check when you make a border crossing into Canada where you will similarly require an Electronic Travel Authorisation from the Canadian government to enter. For the chillest border crossing possible, be ready to answer questions about your travel purpose and length of stay. Possession of alcohol, tobacco and firearms will be monitored, so save your trip to the liquor store until after crossing.

Bear in mind that major highway crossings tend to be busier than smaller highway and truck routes, meaning that a small detour can save you potential hours queuing in traffic. The Canadian Border Services Agency’s Twitter feed can provide up-to-date information on border waits and opening times, or check here . Those wanting to cross in style should consider investing in a NEXUS card which gives pre-approval for travellers who pay $50 for a five-year card and take an interview with US and Canadian officials at the NEXUS enrolment centre.

Don’t get caught out speeding down the freeway on the other side without first getting to grips with Canada’s metric system. You’ll see speed limits written in kilometres, not miles so check closely on your speedometer for the conversion, or otherwise, check online before heading out.

New York to Quebec City – Itinerary

After a hectic few days pounding the asphalt in NYC, begin the epic journey towards Montreal at any pace you choose. The direct journey will be a six to seven-hour drive northwards on I-87 North Highway. (FYI, as well as being a great destination road trip from New York, Montreal is also a 455-mile leg from Philly, 308 miles from Boston and 260 miles from Portland and Maine).

Opt for the scenic route towards Montreal and take a brief interlude at Niagara Falls. The falls are also seven hours from New York, but instead, we take the I-80 West, I-81 North or I-90 West. From there, travellers have the added option of driving to Toronto (1.5 hours via the Queen Elizabeth Way) before making their way to Montreal (5 hours via ON-401 East) and concluding in Quebec City (2.5 hours via Route Transcanadienne / Autoroute 20 East).

Road trip from New York to Niagara Falls

If a dousing at Niagara Falls is on your to-do list, pack your umbrella hat and poncho and read on. Straddling the US-Canada border, Niagara Gorge rises 160 feet covering three waterfalls where six million cubic feet of water gushes past every minute. The most powerful in the whole of North America, these falls are spectacular viewed from any angle, either side of the border. Boat rides on the US side operate daily.

Return to your vehicle and make the short dash to Toronto, hopefully arriving in time to sample a Toronto Cocktail or two. Not only repped by the likes of Drake and Keanu Reeves, Toronto is also well known for its lid-off diversity where 230 nationalities communicate in over 140 languages – although English remains lingua franca. Travel the city’s distinct cultural microcosms, getting drunk on heady spices in Little India and full up on hearty local produce in Greektown. A foodie’s last stand, Toronto honours Canada’s indigenous heritage while embracing diversity, with an exciting range of fusion and authentic global cuisine. Toronto’s openness extends through to its gay scene, where Church Wellesley Gay Village acts as the central hangout for a gay community that now spills into the trendy area of Queen Street West, Old Cabbagetown and beyond.

Whether you’ve come straight from the border or taken a sojourn in Toronto, Montreal will feel like a whole world away. Distinctly Canadian yet licked with French heritage, Montreal features European-style avenues side by side with chaotic Chinatown alleyways and, of course, an internationally contending Gay Village. The second-largest city in Canada, Montreal is also the world’s second-largest French-speaking city, although – unlike Paris – English is widely spoken.

Either way, brush up on your Français and you won’t regret it. A little effort goes a long way and a few words in French can quickly make you a local friend or two. As for dating, old school Montrealians still seem to prefer face-to-face flirtation in bars, nightclubs and bathhouses over hook-up apps. Montreal to Quebec City drive

Take your sweet time on the next leg which will take you from Montreal to Quebec City through rural Canada at its most mesmerising, dotted as it is with quaint towns, local wineries and boutique districts. More slow-paced than its opposing urban ends, Quebec province allows visitors to return to nature, rekindling an appreciation for the simple things such as moseying through forests, indulging in farm-to-table fare and exploring the provincial sites of a gone-by era alongside a friendly diverse community.

The wider Quebec province encompasses the majority of Canada’s northeast, flanking Ontario in the west and rugged Newfoundland in the east. Feel free to venture further north for hiking excursions and picturesque drives, but for now, we stick to the more populated areas, following the St Lawrence River east to where Quebec City sits spoiled with stunning backdrops including Montmorency Falls, the Jacques-Cartier National Park and a variety of idyllic isles just moments from the centre.

Quebec city

Unique across North America for its colonial fortifications, QC is an intriguing endpoint for our NYC to Quebec City road trip, where historical sites and cobbled streets provide the backdrop for a packed cultural calendar and lively night-time escapades. Of the many things to do in Quebec City, be sure to take a romantic walk and soak up the city’s Nouvelle-France architecture before winding up in the Saint-Jean-Baptiste neighbourhood, where the city’s queer centre lies on Rue Saint-Jean. Despite lacking an official gay village, Quebec City is as liberal as they come, being one of the first jurisdictions in the world to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation. The energy, passion and inclusivity in this city are clear – your rainbow flags and excessive PDA won’t even raise an eyebrow. While the use of English is pervasive in Quebec, attempting a greeting in French will again win you much favour with the locals… Essayez-le aujourd’hui!

Traveling To New York

Fall foliage in the Adirondacks in New York

Thankfully, traveling to New York for your New York road trip itinerary is pretty dang easy.

After all, New York is home to no less than three major airports – JFK, Newark, and LaGuardia – that are all well connected both domestically and internationally.

Personally, I’d recommend flying into either JFK or LaGuardia since both are closer to NYC than Newark, which is actually in New Jersey.

From here, you can then spend a few days in NYC before starting your New York road trip itinerary.

Personally, I wouldn’t rent a car in NYC just because it can be super expensive.

Instead, I’d spend a few days in NYC, take the train/bus to the Catskills, and THEN rent a car upon arrival.

Now, to get to the Catskills – the first stop in this New York road trip itinerary – from NYC you have a couple of different options. You could:

Take the Train  – Take NJ Transit’s mainline or the Bergen County line from Penn Station and then transfer to Metro-North’s Port Jervis line to Otisville. Once at Otisville, you can use a rideshare service to take you to the nearest car rental service.

Take the Bus  – This option is a bit more straightforward. Basically, all you’d need to do is hop on an Adirondack-Pine Hills Trailways/Greyhound bus and take it to the Catskills. Yeah, it really is that easy since they depart from the Port Authority bus terminal in Mid-Town. Once there, you could again use a rideshare service to take you to the nearest car rental service.

Pro Tip:  I’d go by bus. It’s easier, only takes about 2.5 hours, and will only cost between $45 and $65 per person. You’ll also get dropped off at the Catskill Park and Ride which is in Catskill, NY, near exit 21 of the New York Thruway.

How to Get Around New York

Kaaterskills Waterfall in Catskills NY

There is no reason why you should EVER drive in New York City. No really, that is not an exaggeration.

Not only are parking spots hard to come by – with insane, totally different, super complicated parking laws are found on every street block – but traffic is awful and if you park in a garage, well, you’ll pay the equivalent of the GDP of a small(ish) country.

Translation? You’ll pay a lot. Like, $40+ an hour a lot.

So, yeah, never drive in NYC and ALWAYS take the subway. Or bus. But the subway is usually easier since there’s no traffic.

Once outside of NYC though, you’ll 110% need a car. Yeah, sorry but outside of NYC, New York’s public transportation system is notoriously terrible or non-existent.

In either case though, you’ll need a car any time you travel outside of NYC.

So, if you want to start in the Catskills like this New York road trip itinerary suggests, I’d take the bus from Port Authority to the Catskills and then rent a car upon arrival.

Car rental services in Catskill, NY are basically Hertz. Conversely, you could always do a rideshare to Kingston and check out Enterprise, Budget Car Rental, or Sensible Car Rental while you’re there.

Best Time to See Fall Foliage in New York

Vibrant fall foliage along a river in the Catskills. A great stop during your New York road trip itinerary.

Honestly, most people typically plan a New York road trip itinerary for the autumn since this is when vibrant foliage typically takes over the New York region.

So, if you’re lookin’ to do a wee bit of leaf peepin’, then consider planning your New York road trip for sometime in October.

Typically, fall foliage is JUST starting to come out in late September and then really takes over the region in October.

And depending on where you are in the state, fall foliage typically peaks in early October in the Adirondacks and around mid-October in the Catskills, which is much further South.

Below you’ll find two different totally amazing New York road trip itineraries that have ten amazing places in total.

Obviously, this is just a suggested NY road trip itinerary and it will vary based on your interests and how much time you have to spend in New York.

So, use this post as a rough guide and to help you plan one of many perfect road trips from NYC for you!

New York Road Trip Itinerary #1 – Headin’ Up North

New york road trip stop 1: catskills.

Bastion Falls surrounded by fall foliage in the Catskills region of New York.

First stop: the Catskills! And I truly love this region since everyone takes something different away from this vast area of natural beauty.

Will you go get lost in the woods? Or head up to the lake to catch fish for supper? Perhaps you’ll attempt to climb one of the many mountains in Catskills? The possibilities are endless!

Things To Do In The Catskills

Explore Catskill Park  – There are two lakes for water sports, over 120 miles of mountain bike trails, and 8 major hiking routes , including climbs up 5 of the 10 highest peaks in the Catskill Mountains. So, there’s plenty to do for anyone looking to get physical during their New York road trip itinerary!

Take in the view at Kaaterskill Falls  – See this beautiful natural marvel in its full glory, as water drops down over 260 feet at the highest waterfall in New York State! This gorgeous site has captured the hearts and minds of painters and poets for hundreds of years. It also happens to be one of the best waterfalls in New York  State!

What To Eat In The Catskills:

Binnekill Tavern  – If fine dining is yo’ thang, head over to Margaretville and grab yourself some top-level dishes at the Binnekill Tavern. Re-opened in 2018 with a new highly acclaimed chef, this Catskills institution will make you want to come back again and again! I recommend the schnitzel – it’s a local specialty!

Gracie’s Luncheonette  – If you feel the need to chow down on some good ol’ comfort food, but with a southern twist, look no further than Gracie’s Luncheonette in Leeds.

Feel-good food is the top priority here, with all-day breakfasts, fry baskets, hamburgers, and sandwiches aplenty. You might have to roll me on over to the next stop after a meal here!

Where To Stay In The Catskills:

Mountain Treasure Bed & Breakfast  (Maplecrest)  – The scenery alone makes this place a pleasure to stay in! Add in spacious rooms, cozy furniture, cute fire pits, and an adorable gazebo, and you could convince me that  Mountain Treasure  might have been plucked straight out of a fairytale!

New York Road Trip Stop 6: Montreal

If you’ve driven this far north, why not go a little bit further and add another country to the mix? I mean Canada is just right across the border and Montreal looks so tempting right? Montreal is one of those places that I have been to more times than I can count because it is such a beautiful city and it is so accessible. Probably why I’m a bit biased when it comes to visiting it.

Things To Do In Montreal

Explore The Gorgeous Sandy Beaches – Montreal has some great beaches where you can enjoy the sand and the sun. If you are visiting in summer that is. If it’s winter, you can still enjoy the sand but it would be a bit too cold to enjoy the water. Nevertheless, it still a great spot to come to enjoy the view!

Go For A Hike – Montreal is a haven for anyone who loves the outdoors. There are amazing park trails for people at all levels of hiking experience and endurance. It is a great way to unwind.

Some of the popular parks are Parc Jean-Drapeau, Mount Royal, Lachine Canal and Champ des Possibles. These parks are just one of those benefits for the lucky ones living in Canada.

What To Eat In Montreal

Foiegwa – Head to Foiegwa for one of the best brunches in Montreal . This elegant diner was actually crafted out of an abandoned space. It is currently known for its gourmet regional cuisine and yes as I mentioned its brunch!

If you visit Foiegwa make sure to try out the waffles and the chicken. Doesn’t sound gourmet? Trust me, you will be surprised!

La Cave A Manger – You may have left NYC way behind but Montreal can offer you one of the most iconic dishes from your fav city. Try the Lafayette Supreme croissant at La Cave A Manger. This is a cream filled delicacy with multiple circular croissant layers. Have I convinced you yet? You seriously have to try it because it will have you craving for more than just one!

Where To Stay In Montreal

Best Western Plus Hotel – The Best Western is a popular hotel chain and with good reason. The hotel has modern rooms which are clean and pretty large. It comes with all the amenities that you could need for a night out in the town. Plus it is very conveniently located in the downtown area.

Hotel Bonaventure Montreal – This is another pretty great hotel to stay at and it has some raving reviews. Not only is Hotel Bonaventure in the heart of the downtown activity, it even has a fitness center that guests can use for free. The 2.5 acres of manicured gardens is also a big draw, as is the rooftop pool and terrace.

Bonus Stop For The Winter Lovers: White face mountain

Whiteface mountain is so close to Lake Placid that you don’t really need to have two bases to visit it. The location however does beg to be mentioned especially if it’s winter but it really doesn’t matter which time of the year you head there. There is always something to do. If you don’t want to be ultra adventurous, there are so many options where you can just kick back and enjoy the view!

Did I mention that there quite a few cool romantic winter getaways here too?

Things To Do In White Face Mountain:

Skiing:  Did you know that the White face mountain is one of the highest in the country? During winter the slopes get coated white and it is a great spot to test your skills whether on a snowboard or on skis!

Hill falls gorge:  It is a privately owned nature park but everyone really raves about how there are trails and activities for all ages. Plus the views are spectacular and it is rather peaceful. Such a break from the noisy streets of the city, if you get what I mean!

Santa’s workshop:  A quirky theme park that has stood the test of ages! It is perfect for families with kids and a fun stop along the way. Don’t expect a huge amusement park with rides though. Here the kids can catch a bit of the Christmas magic and so can you. I know I loved it. Bonus points because I got to feed the reindeer which was so much fun!

Where To Stay In White Face Mountain

Hungry Trout Resort:  It is perfect if you want to stay close to the ski lifts and get as much out of the slopes as you can.

Sara Placid Inn:  Located in Lake Placid, this a warm tranquil place to stay. It allows you to access the slopes and yet have the quite laid back life near the lake.

Therefore, it’s the perfect spot to go for a hike, cruise out on the lake, or sample some delicious wine from one of the many Seneca Lake vineyards that can be found in this quaint little New York town.

Order yourself a Finger Lakes omelet and follow it up with some pancakes and waffles. You might even want some oatmeal, yogurt, and perhaps even a muffin. Regardless of what you choose tough, the food here is guaranteed to leave you feeling ready to start your day!

Where To Stay In Watkins Glen

School 31 Lofts  (Rochester)  – Right in the middle of the Neighbourhood of the Arts, this modern hotel comes with some impressive furnishings mixed in with some very artistic designs, which is appropriate! You can totally tell this used to be a school, but this is a much better use of the building if you ask me. I’ll take comfort over homework any day!

New York Road Trip Stop 4: Buffalo

Downtown Buffalo NY.

Time to head further west to Buffalo, New York’s second-largest city.

As you can imagine, with great size comes a great amount of things to see and do! So, when you visit, expect to find nature preserves, botanical gardens, museums, a thriving nightlife scene, and plenty of activities down by the harbor.

Because it’s all happening here, at least if you embark on one of the best road trips from NYC!

And the centerpiece of it all is a tri-domed conservatory that is made from wood, steel, and glass, which houses tropical plants and looks Insta-mazing at sunset!

Definitely take some time to go on the Garden Walk, which is known for being America’s largest garden tour. And if you want to be the first one through the door, they also offer an early access activity where you get to help feed the koi fish who live in the ponds here!

New York to Montreal Road Trip: Where Past Meets Present

Whether exploring the Great Camps of the Adirondacks, cheering on your horse at Saratoga Springs or biking amongst the outdoor exhibits of a forward-thinking art center in Hudson Valley, this New York to Montreal road trip balances the glamor of an era gone by with the area’s forward-thinking, contemporary heart.

The Catskills and Hudson Valley

Days 1 & 2

Leave New York City behind as you venture into the bucolic Hudson Valley just a few hours drive north of the big city. Thanks to generations of artists escaping the city to find inspiration in nature upstate, Hudson Valley is awash with trendy boutiques, fantastic restaurants and acclaimed art institutions.

Indulge in a farmer-led visit and lunch at the renowned Stone Barns Center for Food & Agriculture, then stop by Storm King Arts Center to explore this leading open-air museum by bike. At the end of the day, rest your head at Troutbeck – a beautiful 250-acre estate that has hosted naturalists, poets and other romantics of the likes of Emerson and Hemingway.

On your second day, Troutbeck has a myriad of activities to immerse you in the surrounding forests and valleys that have long inspired its visitors. Whether you’re interested in hiking, a guided fly-fishing experience or meditation, there’s something for everyone.

Saratoga Springs

Day 3 & 4

Continue to step back in time as you venture further upstate. First, you’ll stop by Olana Estate, home to one of the major figures in the Hudson River School of landscape painting, for a private tour through the historic building and sweeping grounds. Then it’s onward to Saratoga Springs , where you’ll enjoy the nostalgic glamor of thoroughbred horse races. We’ll arrange your VIP box seats at the track with a private paddock pass and access to the winner’s circle. Don your race day best (don’t forget your hat!) and hope the odds are in your favor.

The Point in the Adirondacks

Continuing north, you’ll drive a few hours to enter the Adirondacks. This wild landscape sprawls across over 6.1 million acres of beautifully rugged mountains, lakes and natural beauty. Soak in your beautiful surroundings with cocktails from the epic vantage point of the Lake Placid Olympic Ski Jump.

Enjoy the best of this beautiful wilderness from the comfort of The Point , a secluded luxury property on Saranac Lake. The Point is a true vestige of the past and a member of the elite ranks of the “Adirondack Great Camps.” In the early 19th century, Gilded Age magnates– such as the Vanderbilts and Guggenheims– built idyllic log mansions along the lakeshores of upstate New York as much-needed escapes back into nature. The Point, built by a member of the Rockefeller clan, is the paragon of this Great Camps era and continues to promise the offer of peace and natural beauty to this day.

During your luxurious stay at The Point, unwind without the distraction of television and with the serenity of the lake and forest at all sides. Twice a week you’ll have the opportunity to dress up in formal attire and join an elegant seven-course meal, in the glamorous style of the Rockefeller’s Great Camps of old. During the day, participate in as many (or as few!) activities as you choose– from waterskiing, fishing and paddle-boarding on the lake to hiking, tennis or croquet amongst the trees.

Finish off your journey by crossing the Canadian border into Montreal, the cosmopolitan heart of Quebec. This city is a convergence of the Old and the New World, the French and English language, exciting new ideas and centuries of history. Your accommodation at the Hotel William Gray mirrors the dichotomy of the city itself with its unique blend of modern design and historic architecture.

Walk the cobblestone streets of Old Montreal with a local historian and peel back the layers of time as you discover the city’s journey from a 17th century fur-trapping town to the multicultural hub it is today. Alternatively, get a taste of Montreal’s multicultural influences on a food tour of North America’s largest open air market with a local chef.

Time to head home! You can fly from Montreal or choose to make the long haul driving back to New York City (6 hrs).

Top road trips from NYC

Cold Spring, NY

1.  Cold Spring, NY

54 miles from NYC

For New Yorkers, it’s hard to imagine the city’s western boundary, the Hudson, in the context of a small town. But Cold Spring is just that—a riverside hamlet with an almost gratuitously all-American sensibility. (It’s where Don McLean wrote the song “American Pie,” so yeah, it’s fairly patriotic.) There are also antique shops, a trolley and a country store to boot.

Necessary pit stop: RiverMarket Bar and Kitchen  in Tarrytown serves locally sourced food right on the river.

Berkshires, MA

2.  Berkshires, MA

152 miles from NYC

Dense, lush forests and rural New England charm define this bucolic spot in Western Massachusetts. You should picnic beside Berry Lake (and maybe see black bears eating blackberries) and drink niche brews and exotic whiskies on a comfy wooden stool in Moe’s Tavern  in Lee, MA.

Necessary pit stop: Take a stop off the Taconic State Parkway and picnic at Barton Orchards  in Poughquag, NY where you can pluck a wide variety of fruits and veggies, including apples, tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants and pumpkins.

Philadelphia, PA

3.  Philadelphia, PA

97 miles from NYC

Philly is the place to be to see street art, from wall-crawling mosaic art exhibits to an all-star showcase for the electric-colored graffiti by local artists. Rittenhouse Square is a well-ornamented park and a nice break from the bustle, and you shouldn’t be too cool to go to Independence Hall, where America began. (It’s where the Declaration of Independence was signed and where the Liberty Bell lives.)

Necessary pit stop: Bracket your contempt for Jersey and hit up the Colonial Diner  in Brunswick, NJ to try the fluffy-AF French toast.

Narragansett, RI

4.  Narragansett, RI

168 miles from NYC

Nestled between the eastern bank of the Pettaquamscutt River and the mouth of Narragansett Bay, this shore-side locale boasts three pristine beaches: Scarborough State Beach, Narragansett Town Beach and Roger Wheeler State Beach. If the blank coastline begins to bore you, check out the Point Judith Lighthouse which dates back to 1816.

Necessary pit stop: Stop in Connecticut and munch succulent seafood at Liv’s Oyster Bar  in Saybrook, CT.

Cape Cod, MA

5.  Cape Cod, MA

246 miles from NYC

The lure of this sea-worn town is well known—it’s where gentle green dunes meet a rocky shore, the beach is worn by waves and the sunsets look tangerine over a royal-blue Atlantic. If you like to fish, there’s nowhere better: The waters are home to bluefin tuna, striped bass, flounder and fluke and are patrolled by salty curmudgeons wearing yellow slickers and steering wooden skiffs.

Necessary pit stop: Hop off the Interstate and cruise around Providence. Drive past its Venetian-style canals towards College Hill. Stop by Aleppo Sweets , an amazing Syrian bakery and cafe.

Finger Lakes, NYC

6.  Finger Lakes, NYC

256 miles from NYC

The Finger Lakes region can be turned into an even longer trip. Chock full of scenery, hiking, wineries and historic attractions along its 11 beautiful lakes. Visit the Heart & Hands Wine Company and hike in Watkins Glen State Park  (or Robert Treman State Park  to escape the crowds of the latter).

Necessary pit stop: In the tiny town of Roscoe you'll find Roscoe Diner . The vintage joint is known for thick slabs of french toast.

Lake Placid, NY

7.  Lake Placid, NY

290 miles from NYC

The aptly named Lake Placid is a small village that provides a relaxing retreat from urban life. Its big, conifer-covered mountains surround the 122-acre Mirror Lake, around which the town is centered. The high altitudes keep the climate here mild, so you can stay chill even in the dog days of summer and even learn about sports history at the Olympics Center.

Necessary pit stop: Remind yourself that New York City isn’t the state capital (though it arguably should be). Stop at the actual New York State Capital in Albany.

Cape May, NJ

8.  Cape May, NJ

158 miles from NYC

This idyllic resort town on the Jersey Shore is known for grand Victorian houses, historic spots like the Congress Hall hotel and the lovely paved promenade along the beaches. Enjoy a drink at the waterfront bar The Rusty Nail then go for fresh seafood at The Lobster House.

Necessary pit stop: Might as well stop in Atlantic City. You can grab a bite to eat at Tony's Baltimore Grill (yes, get the spaghetti pizza).

Stowe, VT

9.  Stowe, VT

334 miles from NYC

This sleepy getaway is ripe for outdoor adventure—rich thickets of sugar maple, beech and yellow birch trees surround the town center, which, as is typical of Vermont, is dominated by a towering white church steeple. To get a sense of the surroundings, take a canoe or kayak out on Lake Elmore, the Green River Reservoir or up the Lamoille and Winooski rivers. And every summer, the Stowe Theater Guild   puts together shows to entertain you in the evenings.

Necessary pit stop: If you need a rest stop, drive west to Brattleboro. Whetstone Station serves unique, small batch craft beers alongside inspired food-truck-style favorites.

Saratoga Springs, NY

10.  Saratoga Springs, NY

190 miles from NYC

This town gets its name from an abundance of mineral springs (there are 18), which have attracted spa-seekers since the 19th century. Almost all the springs are naturally carbonated, so we recommend sipping some complimentary Saratoga Sparkling Rosé when bathing in them. The city’s also famous for the Saratoga Race Course  where you can place legal bets.

Necessary pit stop: Stop in Woodstock and hike up Overlook Mountainin Woodstock for a view of the Hudson River Valley that is seriously worth the two-and-a-half-mile walk.

Alexandria, VA

11.  Alexandria, VA

238 miles from NYC

Cobblestone streets, sidewalk cafés and a generally dreamy attitude endow this small city with a romantic feel. Walk along the pastel-colored buildings on King Street, the main drag in Alexandria’s Old Town, for unique shopping at (mostly) non-franchise boutiques. Then treat your eyes to Torpedo Factory Art Center  which houses 82 artist studios and six galleries, all of which are open to the public.

Necessary pit stop: The Coffee Station  in Garnet Valley, PA serves up diner-food delights in an unpretentious setting: There’s often live music and a mug full of Trivial Pursuit cards on each table.

Bar Harbor, ME

12.  Bar Harbor, ME

487 miles from NYC

Granite cliffs meet the Atlantic Ocean and Colonial Revival cottages line the quiet streets in this city. Walk along the Shore Path, which hugs the chocolate-box coastline and runs from the Town Pier toward Mountain Desert Island. Then sample something sweet at Mount Desert Island Ice Cream — just look for a bench painted a Victorian-y shade of purple.

Necessary pit stop: Stop in New Hampshire and drink suds at the top-notch Portsmouth Brewery .

Niagara Falls, NY

13.  Niagara Falls, NY

408 miles from NYC

This tourist attraction and old-timey honeymooner fave is well worth a visit. The seven-hour trip is an exceptionally scenic one, so build in time for stops and hikes. There's a reason tourists flock to Niagara Falls State Park —thunderous falls, mist and plenty of rainbows are unforgettable.

Necessary pit stop:  As you drive through the Catskills, grab a stop on the patio at Yiasou Cafe , a cheerful spot serving a variety of traditional Greek & Mediterranean dishes.

États-Unis–Montréal : guide du parfait road trip

road trip montreal boston new york

Jamie O'Meara

road trip montreal boston new york

10 Must-Stops For A New York To Boston Road Trip Through The Hudson Valley

A road trip from New York City to Boston is on many bucket lists. Most people drive the coastal route with stops in Connecticut and Rhode Island. As an alternative, try going inland through New York State and Western Massachusetts. You will discover many cultural, culinary, and historical hidden gems on this road trip.

This road trip can be done any time of year. On an autumn trip, you will see amazing fall colors. Spring brings an abundance of flowers. It is doable in winter, but some spots are seasonal and the roads can get snowy. Summer is full of interesting events and a lot of crowds.

1. New York City

New York City is a fantastic destination any time of year. Culture, theater, food, parks, and history — it’s all there. If you are a first-time visitor , you may want to focus on the top attractions: Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge, Grand Central Station, Chinatown, and Broadway.

As a native New Yorker, I like the hidden gems of New York , and you might also include a trip to Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, or the Bronx as part of your adventure.

New York is one of the culinary capitals of the world, so be sure to sample the many ethnic cuisines in the city. Chinatown, Curry Row, Katz’s, and Yonah Schimmel Knish Bakery are definitely worth a try.

Once you’ve had your fill of the Big Apple, it’s time to get on the road. First stop: the Hudson Valley. The Hudson Valley begins just north of New York City and extends all the way to Albany. On this road trip, you’ll be going through the lower portion of the Hudson Valley, about an hour’s drive from Manhattan. The next several stops in our itinerary will allow you to experience the beauty of this fine region.

2. Union Church Of Pocantico Hills Stained Glass

The first stop is a hidden gem. Built by the Rockefeller family, the Union Church of Pocantico Hills is a small, unassuming church with nine stained glass windows by Marc Chagall and one by Henri Matisse. Take a moment of quiet reflection and to admire the stained glass. Photography is not allowed inside the church. It is wheelchair accessible and a short walk from the parking lot.

Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate in New York.

3. Kykuit: The Rockefeller Estate

The Hudson Valley is full of historic sites that date to the gilded age, including the Rockefeller and Vanderbilt estates as well as those of Presidents Martin Van Buren and Franklin Roosevelt. Pick at least one to visit.

Our favorite is Kykuit, the home of four generations of Rockefellers. The gardens, views, and homes are spectacular. You can only visit Kykuit by booking a tour . It is best to buy your tickets in advance, especially if you are visiting in the summer. The art galleries are included on the three-hour tour.

The grounds are extensive, so walking shoes are important. Some parts are accessible, but not all. When booking a tour, check the website for full accessibility information.

For a dinnertime splurge, Blue Hill at Stone Barns is nearby. This farm-to-table restaurant is amazing but very expensive. There are many affordable restaurants, hotels, and bed-and-breakfasts in Tarrytown and the surrounding areas, too.

If you are in the Hudson Valley during October, Sleepy Hollow is a great place to experience Halloween for children and families.

After checking out of your overnight stay the next morning, head up to New Windsor, about an hour’s drive.

4. Storm King Art Center

Storm King is a 500-acre outdoor museum with large-scale sculptures. It is stunning any time of year. Our favorite time to visit is in autumn when it is less crowded and the fall colors light up the area. Sunscreen, insect repellent, and good walking shoes are in order. If you have mobility challenges, a tram traverses the grounds and is equipped for wheelchairs.

For lunch, there is food onsite and in nearby restaurants. Alternatively, take a 40-minute drive to our next recommended stop: the Culinary Institute of America.

The Culinary Institute of America in New Hyde Park.

5. Culinary Institute Of America

Want to see where the next top chef is being trained? Stop by the Culinary Institute of America (CIA). CIA was the first college to offer culinary arts instruction in the U.S. The late celebrity chef and host of Kitchen Confidential , Anthony Bourdain, was an alumni.

Located in beautiful New Hyde Park, the CIA primary campus is a good place to visit for an hour. The school has a cafe and two restaurants on the premises. Reservations are recommended and are sometimes booked up months in advance.

6. Rhinebeck, New York

Rhinebeck is a short 20-minute drive from CIA. It is very popular for antiques. You can find treasures anytime of the year, and there is a huge antique show in October . If you visit in July, there is a hot air balloon festival . In May, you’ll find an antique car show .

Stay overnight in Rhinebeck. Make sure to book your room in advance if you are attending one of the festivals. The Old Rhinebeck Inn and the Fiddlers Farmhouse are two possibilities.

The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art.

7. MASS MoCA

Get on the road first thing the next morning for the two-hour drive to North Adams, the home of the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) .

Located in North Adams, MASS MoCA is one of the largest contemporary art and performing spaces in the country. Housed in a converted print factory complex, the museum is known for its oversized modern and contemporary installations not usually found in traditional galleries. In addition to special exhibitions, MASS MoCA offers a wide variety of music, sculpture, dance, film, painting, photography, and theater. The museum has an excellent bistro on site.

The place to stay when visiting MASS MoCA is across the Hoosic River. The Porches Inn is a charming boutique inn converted from a row of beautifully restored 19th-century Victorian homes. Named for its porches filled with rocking chairs, it is very cozy with working fireplaces and claw-foot tubs. The inn blends whimsical comfort with modern amenities.

8. Northampton, Massachusetts

An hour’s drive from MASS MoCA, Northampton and nearby Amherst are college towns. Smith, Hampshire, Amherst, and Mount Holyoke Colleges are located there. The Botanic Garden of Smith College is worth the trip. You can also wander Main Street to see the art galleries. Want to travel off the beaten track? Visit the Yiddish Book Center in Amherst. The center is dedicated to the preservation of Yiddish, the language of eastern European Jewish communities. More than a million books are collected there.

It’s a two-hour drive to the next stop — Salem, famous for the Salem witch trials of the 1690s.

The Salem Witch Museum in Salem, Massachusetts.

Pierrette Guertin / Shutterstock

9. Salem, Massachusetts

Salem has much to offer and could easily be an overnight stop or a day trip from Boston.

Of the many tourist attractions related to the Salem witch trials, our favorite is the Salem Witch Memorial to the 20 men and women who were tried and executed. Fans of Nathaniel Hawthorne can also take a walk to see the House of the Seven Gables, the setting for the novel.

The Peabody Essex Museum is also a must-see. Its collection spans widely from maritime artifacts to Asian and African art.

While in Salem, make sure to go to the Punto Urban Art Museum on the other side of town. The area has extensive murals painted by local and internationally famous artists. It is part of an effort by the North Shore Community Development Corporation to use street art as a social justice and community development effort.

Once you are done in Salem, make the 40-minute drive to Boston where you will spend the next three days exploring the city.

10. Boston, Massachusetts

You’ve now arrived in Boston, a city with many historical gems . Some favorites are the Freedom Trail, Paul Revere’s house, and Faneuil Hall. Perhaps you’ll want to catch a baseball game in Fenway Park, soak in the sun in Boston Commons, or grab a drink at the famous Cheers bar. Crossing the Charles River will bring you to Harvard , MIT, and Cambridge.

Take your time to savor the scenic drives on this road trip and the hidden gems throughout the Hudson Valley. If you enjoy bed and breakfasts, there are many. Make sure to book your accommodations well in advance if you are traveling in the summer or during one of the many festivals. If you want to dine at the Culinary Institute of America or Blue Hill at Stone Barns, we recommend making reservations months in advance.

7 Not-to-be-Missed Stops on a New York to Boston Road Trip

NYC to Boston road trip itinerary with cobblestone Boston street

Whether you live in NYC and need a getaway or you just want to plan a road trip, a New York to Boston road trip is a classic vacation. While you can make the trip in a day, don’t rush it but plan some stops to see cute towns, historic sights, and beautiful beaches along the way.

I’ve structured this trip to take a week or so, but you can easily turn this into a long weekend trip by cutting down on some of the stops. Some alternate itineraries are outlined below.

The Boston to New York route can get quite congested. In the summer, you can expect a lot of traffic from people traveling to or from the Cape, especially on the weekends. Interstate 95 through Connecticut is notorious for its traffic jams so be sure to check Waze or use Google or Apple Maps to check for the fastest routes. Sometimes using the Merritt Parkway through Southern Connecticut can save you some time. Some people may choose to jump on a Peter Pan bus , or take the train from Boston to NYC , but driving will let you stop along the way.

If you want to go further north, continue on with this Boston to Bar Harbor Maine coast road trip itinerary or extend your road trip even further with this East Coast road trip .

Where to Stop on your New York to Boston Road Trip

New York, NY

If you haven’t been to New York City , plan to spend a few days at the beginning or end of your road trip. If this is your first trip to NYC, pick one neighborhood, like the Theater District, Midtown East, Soho, or Lower Manhattan, and explore.

You can’t expect to see everything in one weekend but you are bound to find something for everyone from Broadway shows, world-class museums, walking tours, dining experiences, local food halls, or outdoor enjoyment in Central Park, Battery Park, the High Line, or walking across the Brooklyn Bridge.

Here are some fun ideas for things to do in NYC with kids .

Day 1: Essex, CT

Kick off your road trip to Boston with a drive along the Connecticut coast. You can complete this drive in two hours, but if you aren’t in a hurry, take your time with some stops along the way. Your destination is the quaint Connecticut town of Essex, in western Connecticut. However, you may want to make some stops along the way. The upscale waterfront town of Greenwich is a perfect spot for lunch or some upscale shopping.

However, if you have gotten an early start, skip over Greenwich and stop in Norwalk. In the summer you can hop on board a harbor cruise or take a boat ride into history and nature with a Sheffield Island lighthouse cruise. The SoNo historic district is packed with restaurants that are perfect for lunch.

Continue along to Essex, where you can make your home base for a couple of nights at the Griswold Inn , the oldest continuously operating inn in America. Dining in the historic taproom is a fun experience. Alternatively, you could stay in nearby Mystic .

There is so much to do in this area, especially with kids. Take a ride on the Essex Steam Train, enjoy a fall foliage cruise on the Connecticut River, visit the bizarre and historic Gillette Castle, explore local lighthouses on a harbor cruise from New London, and stroll along the Niantic Boardwalk.

Mystic CT Harbor

Day 3: Mystic, CT

On your next day, head over to nearby Mystic , Connecticut. You can spend the morning at the Mystic Aquarium and go back in time at the Historic Mystic Seaport. This is a great opportunity to learn about the fishing heritage in this area. You may want to stop for lunch at the popular Mystic Pizza, although I prefer the cool vibes of Engine Room. Nearby, wine aficionados will enjoy a tasting and picnic at Jonathan Edwards Winery in nearby Stonington, CT.

After exploring Mystic, cross the border into Rhode Island where you may want to pop into Watch Hill for a ride on the historic Flying Horses carousel. From there it is only an hour drive to Newport, Rhode Island.

There are many great hotel options in Newport, including the historic Hotel Viking or The Vanderbilt , although families may prefer the contemporary Newport Marriott (especially if you want to use points).

Marble House in Newport Rhode Island

Day 3: Newport, RI

Of course, there is so much to do in Newport , you can easily spend a long weekend. If this is your first visit, there are three things you have to do. First, visit one of the Newport Mansions, such as the famous Breakers. Next, either take a walk on the Cliff Walk or a scenic drive along Ocean Avenue.

Have lunch downtown at Diego’s or The Black Pearl before setting sail for an afternoon or evening sunset sailing cruise. If you have timed your visit with one of Providence ‘s famous Waterfire events , head 45 minutes north to Rhode Island’s Creative Capital for this unique experience.

There are plenty of great places to stay in Providence, but if you are going for something unique, stay at the Graduate Providence .

River in downtown Providence with gondola

Day 4: Providence, RI

It is nice to spend at least half a day in Providence before driving another hour or two to Cape Cod. In Providence, you can explore the amazing murals downtown, then walk along the river and over the pedestrian bridge for lunch at Plant City, the city’s only plant-based food hall.

If you have time, you may want to try a Rhode Island Red food tour to check out the city’s famous food scene or get the history of the city from the river with a tour from Providence River Boat Company.

Soon it is time to head east to Cape Cod. If you only have one night to spend on the Cape, you may want to stick to Falmouth at the Sea Crest Beach Hotel or Hyannis at the Cape Codder Resort . If you want to spend more time at the beach, venture a little further out to stay at the luxurious Wequasset Resort or Chatham Bars Inn .

Chapin's Beach on Cape Cod with a family under an umbrella

Day 5: Cape Cod, MA

On Cape Cod, you can spend the day biking the Cape Cod Rail Trail, exploring the National Seashore, and enjoying the Cape’s gorgeous beaches and sunsets. You may also enjoy a whale-watching cruise or a lobster bake on the beach with Art’s Dune Tours in Provincetown.

There are endless options to explore on the Cape, even in the off-season .

Plymouth Rock

Day 6: Plymouth, MA

Just 40 minutes up the coast from Cape Cod is a must-stop destination for United States history buffs . Plymouth is a fun seaside town to explore, just don’t have high expectations for Plymouth Rock. Kids will enjoy stepping onto the replica Mayflower II ship — returned to its home in Plymouth in 2020.

I would also highly recommend visiting the Pilmouth Pawtuxet Museums (formerly known as Plimouth Plantations.) The site consists of a 17th-century English village and a Wampanoag homesite.

You can stay overnight at the John Carver Inn , but it probably makes sense to continue 45 minutes further into your ultimate destination — Boston!

Make way for ducklings statue in Boston

Day 7: Boston, MA

There is so much to do in Boston you really want to give yourself a couple of days, but if you only have a day you can hit a few of the highlights. Start at the Boston Public Garden and Boston Common and strap on your walking shoes to explore the 2.5-mile Freedom Trail. There is a lot of history to absorb and for families, a great spot to do that is at the Boston Tea Party Museum and Ships.

Afterward, explore the waterfront, pop into the North End for a great Italian lunch and pastries, stroll down the Rose Kennedy Greenway, visit the Boston Public Market food hall, and explore the city center. If you don’t feel like doing all the walking, you can also hop on board an amphibious duck boat tour.

If you spend 3 days in Boston or more, you can also plan a day trip from Boston up to Salem or Gloucester . See also my guide for visiting Boston on a budget and find out things to do in Boston with kids .

Day 8: Return to New York City

On your trip back from Boston to NYC, you can return the way you came in a four-hour drive or extend your road trip by taking a different route back. If you are looking for an alternative, driving from Boston, you can take Interstate 90 / the Mass Pike West instead of heading back down 95.

An hour west of Boston you will come to Old Sturbridge Village, MA. This is the largest outdoor living history museum in New England, with buildings and interpreters representing life in rural New England between 1790 and 1830. From here, travel south on Interstate 84 to Hartford and continue on Interstate 91 to New Haven, CT, for approximately 1.25 hours in total.

If you are hungry, be sure to enjoy Frank Pepe’s famous pizza (there is also an outpost in Hartford.) If you need to stretch your legs, take a stroll through the Yale University campus. If traffic goes well, it is then less than two hours drive back to New York City.

Add this and other places to your personal travel plan. We will then help you with further suitable suggestions: free of charge and straightaway!

This tour along the East Coast is one of the most impressive road trips I have taken in the USA. In October 2016, my father and I started this trip in New York (where else?!) because I wanted to show him why I have, for many years, loved this city so much, and introduce him to the spots that are close to my heart.

Our route on the map

Roadtrip from New York Martha's Vineyard Boston Niagara Falls Washington DC

Our day-by-day itinerary

Days 1 to 3: new york to new england via providence, martha’s vineyard, and cape cod.

Length of the tour: 362 miles.

After two hours of driving, our first stop was New Haven, which has a beautiful city center with many small cafes, bars, and restaurants. New Haven is best known for Yale University, and the city is young as a result; you will notice many students sitting in the cafes with their laptops, working on something.

Rhode Island State House in Providence

We then bought some coffee for the ride and drove all the way to Providence . Providence is perfectly located to explore Cape Cod, Boston, or the island of Martha’s Vineyard. If you don’t have time to visit all three spots, I highly recommend Martha’s Vineyard and Boston.

Our hotel was the Hampton Inn & Suites in downtown Providence . At this point of the road trip, the question on our minds was whether the colorful fall foliage was better in the White Mountains or the Green Mountains.

We got into a conversation with a family at Rogue Island Local Kitchen & Bar  (address: 65 Weybosset St #108, Providence), United Stateswhile eating burgers and drinking IPA (it’s right across the street from the hotel), and they recommended the White Mountains to us. That was a good tip, as you’ll see later on from the pictures we took. The town is laid back and you can go out in the evening for an enjoyable time. Don’t forget to visit the Capitol, especially when the sun is low, as it offers incredible light, which is great for photos.

We went to Martha’s Vineyard by ferry , a small but beautiful island off the coast, which is known for being a popular vacation spot for US presidents. The ferry ride takes about 45-60 minutes and you can get to the island from New Bedford ( ferry tickets here ) or from Woods Hole (tickets for the ferry are available on this page ) (destination: Oak Bluffs).

Be sure to note the times they leave beforehand!

We were lucky to be there during the last week of peak season, but fewer ferries go to Martha’s Vineyard during the off-season. The ferry ride is incredibly beautiful, and you will see many small bays, islands, and lighthouses.

The ferry to Martha

While on Martha’s Vineyard, be sure to visit the Harbor View Hotel restaurant (address: 131 N Water St, Edgartown, MA 02539; you can check it out at booking.com here) located at the lighthouse in Edgartown, and my good friend Mikhail in his coffee shop called Behind the Bookstore (address: 46 Main St. – really behind a bookstore, website ). Believe me, the man is one of the most passionate coffee enthusiasts I know! He spends 3-4 months during the off-season visiting coffee plantations around the world to explore great new coffees.

Take advantage of the drive from Edgartown to Oak Bluffs by traveling on the Beach Road. The road always takes you right along the coast and through small towns that are simply gorgeous.

Roadtrip from New York Martha

In the evening, we took one of the last ferries from Martha’s Vineyard back to the mainland, where we enjoyed an incredible sunset. The next destination? Boston!

Day 4: Boston

Loews Hotel Boston

Boston was a highlight for us; we visited the Skywalk Observatory (currently closed, unfortunately), the Charles River with its adjoining meadows, and the old town, and we had plenty of time to sit in the Boston Common Park and listen to the musicians. Our hotel, Loews Hotel Boston , was terrific; perfect value for the money and the best steakhouse in town, Grill 23 & Bar , was right across the street.

Day 5 & 6: Fall foliage in New England & Kancamagus Highway

Length of the tour: 184 miles.

After just about three hours of driving from Boston, we arrived at the White Mountains in North Conway . This little town was our first coffee stop; be sure to go to The Metropolitan Coffeehouse (address: 2680 White Mountain Hwy, North Conway, NH 03860, website ). In addition to free Wi-Fi, the coffeehouse is also a small gallery, the location is great and – of course, also important – the coffee is delicious.

Conway

From here, we wanted to go to Mount Washington ; the highest mountain not only in the White Mountains, but in the entire Northeast USA. We were there in October and were lucky to have accessed the webcam beforehand via the website ( here’s the link ). The road there was not passable due to snow drifts; unbelievable, because we were sitting in the sun at 26°C!

The Kancamagus Highway 112 , which leads from Conway to Lincoln, is one of the most impressive roads on the East Coast of the USA. Here you can expect thirty miles of pure nature, crystal clear water, and incredible fall foliage. Plan ahead, as there is little to no cell phone reception. As you travel, you can find parking lots and lookouts like the Sugar Hill Scenic Vista, from which you can enjoy wonderful views.

Ostkueste-USA-Indian-Summer-Fooliage-05-1600×800-1

Lincoln itself is a small town with its own charm and the selection of hotels is not large, rather you will find many motels, some with sensational locations. We stayed at the Indian Head Resort , which had an unobstructed view of a lake and the mountains. It has been family owned for decades and the entire staff is super nice. This was a perfect spot to kick back and relax as we rounded out day 6 of our trip.

Indian Head Resort

By the way, you can go up the tower for $1 per person, which has a few years under its belt. The view is worth the climb!

Day 7: Burlington on Lake Champlain

Length of the tour: 142 miles.

Burlington is right on Lake Champlain, which is in between the states of New York and Vermont. Our hotel was the Hilton Burlington Lake Champlain , which is close to downtown with its many restaurants and bars.

If you want to try ramen, go for Gaku Ramen (address: 144 Church St.) or go to Sixty Battery (address: 60 Battery St., table reservations recommended!). The best craft beer in town is at The Farm House Tap & Grill (address: 160 Bank St.) and the food is just as good as their beer.

The Farm House Tap & Grill

We sat outside in the sun for two hours and used the time to plan the next phases of our trip and send photos we had taken thus far. Be sure to try the sandwich with bacon, pear, and blue cheese! Be sure to also take the time to go to the shore of Lake Champlain at Waterfront Park , either to just enjoy the view or even take a tour by boat. You can get great coffee at Uncommon Grounds Coffee & Tea , free Wi-Fi included (address: 42 Church Street).

Day 8 & 9: Niagara Falls

Length of the tour: 386 miles.

Today we had to get up early because we had to drive more than 380 miles.

Our road trip took us all the way to Canada to see Niagara Falls – definitely one of the absolute highlights on our tour along the East Coast of the USA!

The idyllic drive to Niagara Falls took us on small roads past many lakes and rivers. We even crossed the Hudson River, which goes all the way to New York City. After seven hours of driving, we could see Niagara Falls because the swirling water can be seen from far away.

Steffen Kneist Loving New York

Which side of Niagara Falls is better?

You can see Niagara Falls from both the American side and the Canadian side. We think that the Canadian side is more beautiful, because the view of the falls is much more impressive.

For accommodations, I recommend the Niagara Falls Marriott Fallsview & Spa (book in advance!!!). All rooms have a view of the falls and the breakfast is great; you can have your breakfast omelet prepared any way you like it.

Niagara Falls Marriott Fallsview & Spa

From the hotel, the Falls Incline Railway takes you down to the viewpoint right at the base of the falls. Also fun is the Behind the Falls tour and the Mistress of the Sea boat ride that takes you right up close to the falls. You’ll definitely get wet, but protection is provided.

Impression of the Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls

The culinary landscape was surprisingly not that good, as tourist-motivated restaurants outnumbered culinary-oriented restaurants. What I can recommend to you, however, is the Terrain Grille Fallsview restaurant , from which you can see the waterfalls. If you go to Niagara Falls during the winter, you might be lucky enough to see them frozen.

Restaurant Terrain Grille Fallsview

If you still have time, you should visit the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake . You will pass many wineries that offer wine tasting, the town is very beautiful, and you will definitely feel at home here.

Niagara-on-the-Lake

Day 10 & 12: Washington D.C.

Length of the tour: 407 miles.

Via Philipsburg, we traveled along Interstates 99, 76, 70, and 270 to our destination: the JW Marriott Washington D.C. . The hotel is really brilliant; all major sights are within walking distance , from the White House to the Lincoln Monument and Museum Mile. The rooms are big, it has a great lobby, and the breakfast is really good, too. To end the day, here’s a tip: visit the rooftop bar P.O.V. Rooftop Lounge & Terrace (address: 515 15th St. NW in the W Hotel); from here you can even see the White House!

Reflecting Pool Washington DC

Washington D.C. has a lot of important sights that you should definitely see. Starting with the White House, the Lincoln Memorial, the United States Capitol, and the Reflecting Pool , known to many from the scene in the movie Forrest Gump. Also on the list: the Washington Monument, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the National Air and Space Museum. Plan to spend about four hours on this walking tour of the monuments.

Of course, there is another bar that I would like to recommend to you: The Lucky Bar (address: 1221 Connecticut Ave, corner of 18th Street). It’s a sports bar with a great selection of beer (bottle and tap) and lots of screens on the wall.

Day 13: Via Baltimore and Philadelphia back to New York

Length of the tour: 225 miles.

The last leg of our road trip along the East Coast of the USA took us through Baltimore and Philadelphia on our way back to New York. Baltimore is quite a beautiful place that we have already visited on previous tours.

My conclusion of this road trip from New York

We had planned this road trip along the East Coast of the USA for a long time and it was just great! We took almost two weeks, but the tour can also be completed in a little more than a week.

Before heading south, it’s worth taking a short detour to the north to visit Salem.

Salem, Massachusetts, was placed firmly on the proverbial map when it became ground zero for the infamous Salem Witch Trials of the late 1600s.

Mass hysteria broke out among the English colonists in the area when several inhabitants were accused of witchcraft, leading to the execution of 19 adults and children rumoured to be witches.

The tragic event forever shaped Salem’s culture, with many tourists visiting Salem every year to learn more about the trails and the events that led up to them.

Today, Salem is a trendy tourist destination with various attractions, such as the Peabody Essex Museum and the Salem Witch Trials Memorial.

For a visit like no other, stop by this sleepy town just north of Boston during Halloween, when Salem’s autumn colours and spooky history combine to create a magical atmosphere.

Salem is 25 miles (40 km) from Boston and about 40 minute by road.
