Description

The Hawaiian island chain was born of fire, but it has been at least 35,000 years since there has been an eruption on the island of Oahu. As the Pacific plate drifts west , the hotspot that creates the volcanic activity is now under the eastern end of the Hawaiian chain. All the recent volcanic activity has been on the Big Island of Hawaii. If you want to see an ACTIVE volcano in person ... steaming craters, recent flows, and maybe even a glipse of some red hot lava ... you need to visit the Big Island!

For guests staying on Oahu, we offer one-day tours to fly from Honolulu Airport to the Big Island, with a tour vehicle, guide and park admission included once you arrive. The day starts early; participants are on their own to get to and from the Honolulu Airport and the morning flights are typically around 5:30am-6:30am. The return flight is typically in the early evening. There are two different versions of this tour offered by two different companies.

One-day interisland tours involving airfare are charged at the time the reservation is made, and there are no refunds for canceled / missed tour dates. Due to airline flight rules there are no changes or cancellations allowed once your date is confirmed. We recommend that you purchase travel insurance to cover the cost of a nonrefundable tour in the event of an unexpected change in your travel plans.

hawaii tours from oahu to big island

Your morning begins with self-checkin at the Honolulu Airport. Following your flight to the Big Island, your tour guide and 20 passenger motorcoach will pick you up at the Kona Airport. This tour is not just a Kilauea Volcano tour ... it is a journey from Kona all the way around the southern tip of the Big Island, with an evening return flight from the Hilo Airport! You will see extensive volcanic landscapes of the Big Island, including historically-recent lava flows from THREE different volcanos! You will drive through idyllic seaside downtown of Kona, pass through coffee farm territory, and further south to the massive lava flows from Mauna Loa. You'll cross the famous 1950 flow that set a record ... once the eruption started high on the slopes of Mauna Loa a massive river of lava surged all the way down the mountain and into the ocean in just 3.5 hours!

About halfway through the drive to Kilauea you will stop for a break at Punalu'u Beach Park , one of the most beautiful and exotic BLACK sand beaches in the world! It is common to see honu ... the Hawaiian gree sea turtles ... hauled out of the ocean and laying in the warm jet black sand. Also enjoy a stop at the Punalu'u Sweet Bread Bakery.

Next stop is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park , home of Kilauea Caldera, the world's most ACTIVE volcano . Park admission is included, and see the Kilauea Visitor Center, Halemaumau Crater overlook, Kilauea Iki Overlook, and walk through and explore the Thurston Lava Tube (Nahuku). If time permits, a stop is often made at Rainbow Falls on the Outskirts of Hilo, followed by your dropoff at the Hilo Airport for your flight back to Oahu.

Schedule: This tour is typically offered daily. Exact flight times are provided after your reservation is confirmed.

Check In Location: Honolulu International Airport Interisland Terminal.

Included: Airfare, guide, motorcoach tour around the southern half of the Big Island, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park admission, water, juice, sodas, and snacks. A no-host lunch stop is made at a local restaurant where food is available for purchase.

Reservations: Advanced reservations required ... tours involving interisland airfare are charged at the time your reservation is confirmed.

Minimum Notice for Cancellations / Changes: Tours involving interisland airfare are non-cancellable, non-changeable, and non-refundable. We recommend that you purchase travel insurance to cover the cost in the event you have an unepected change in your vacation plans.

Explore cascading waterfalls, craters, and the city of Hilo which was inundated by a tsunami in 1960. Bear witness to the 2018 eruption that drastically altered the island's landscape. Peer into the depths of Halemaumau Crater which has remarkably doubled in size and watch steam clouds form as ground water seeps onto hot volcanic rock at the famous Steam Vents.

Gaze at sweeping coastal views at Kealakomo Overlook where older lava flows entered the ocean. Drive down scenic Chain of Craters Road., and explore Nahuku ... also known as Thursdon Lava Tube. Marvel at not one by two spectacular waterfalls – Rainbow Falls just outside of Hilo town, and Akaka Falls - a towering 442 foot tall waterfall accessible by walking a short verdant jungle trail from the parking lot. Your day concludes with an evening flight from Hilo back to Honolulu.

Schedule: This tour is typically offered Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Exact flight times are provided after your reservation is confirmed.

Included: Airfare, guide, motorcoach tour, admission to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. A "to-go" lunch is included with the price of the tour.

If you have never seen an active volcano up close and personal, a day trip to the Big Island is a MUST for your Oahu vacation! You'll not only SEE the volcano, you'll hear it, smell it, and feel the heat eminating from the ground in places. Even if there is a pause in the eruption on the day of your visit, hissing and steaming cracks are easy to find at the "Steam Banks" area inside the park.

The two tour companies featured here have completely different approaches ... both of them showcase Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Kilauea Volcano, but the distance that is covered during these two tours is very different. Aloha Sunsine Tours has you fly into KONA on tha western side of the island, so it is more of a "Half Circle Island" tour with Hawaii Volcanoes National Park the highlight of the day, with stops at various locations in the summit area of the Kilaeua Caldera. Polynesian Adventures has guests fly in and out of Hilo, which is closer to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. You spend more time in the park with them, and they include TWO waterfalls as well. Because they have more time in the park, they also go down "Chain of Craters Road", and area that Aloha Sunshine Tours does not have time to visit because of the longer drive from Kona.

If Aloha Sunshine Tours spends more time driving and less time at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, what are the advantages of going with THEIR tour? Well, for one you get to see more than just Kilauea Volcano ... you land at the Kona Airport which was built on a lava flow from Hualalai Volcano. Hualalai looms over the resorts and condos of the Kona area and if it erupts again in our lifetime, it will be BIG news. You will also drive through impressive, massive lava flows that poured from the summit of Mauna Loa volcano. As you round the southern tip of the Big Island you'll visit Punalu'u black sand beach, which has what I think is the most jet black sand of any volcanic beach anywhere. With green palm trees inland, and the blue Pacific Ocean offshore, the black sand is framed by tropical beauty.

But ... if you don't want to spend as much time driving around, and if waterfalls are your thing ... you'll be happier on the Polynesian Adventures tour. Akaka Falls is a state park, and the 442 foot tall falls is a GEM of a natural attraction.

In reality, unless you are planning months ahead of time (which we recommend), the decision which tour to do may come down to taking the tour that happens to be available on the date you are wanting to go. The Polyynesian Adventures tour is only offered three days a week, so it sells out quicker than the Aloha Sunshine Tour.

Finally, one thing to keep in mind about one day tours that include airfare; Due to airline rules these tours are FINAL once they are booked. There are no cancellations, changes, passenger substitutions, or refund of any kind once a tour has been finalized. Because airfare is involved, these tours must be prepaid and are charged at the time that your reservation is confirmed. We do recommend that you consider purchasing travel insurance that would reimburse you for this tour cost in the event that your vacation plans were suddenly changes due to unforseen circumstances.

Latest reviews of Day Trips: Volcano Tours from Oahu

If not for the rain.

Our quide, Dexter was excellent. He was very thoughtful and professional. He made an otherwise rainy, gloomy day a fun day. The tour gave us a great overview.

Big Island Tour

Perfectly organised day, from communication prior to the day to everyone involved in sny part of the tour. The guide was great, hugely knowledgeable and interesting. The helicopter trip was perhaps the most incredible ... more thing I have ever done. The ground crew were superb and the pilot made it the best trip ever. After waiting 30 years to do this tour it didn't disappoint. Could not recommend it highly enough.

Good tour, but you can't schedule nature

The timings and organisation of the tour were good. We were picked up from the airport and taken to see the Volcano National Park sites with a good guide who kept us informed and was accommodating of our needs. Unfortuna ... more tely you can't schedule nature and we didn't see any volcanic activity apart from a little steam, but it was still interesting, especially the lava tube. We had a helicopter tour with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters to finish off with, but I will not review that part, I will review their admin however. We really wanted a copy of the video of our flight as it was for a 50th birthday, but due to a technical difficulty could not get it at the time. We were told to just drop them a line, but after several emails and calls, still nothing - very disappointed in them.

Dexter was a great guide with tons of information about not only the specific tour items but also the island and people in general. Rainy morning made volcano viewing tough but that’s Mother Nature. The helo tour of volc ... more anos in the afternoon more than made up for things!

Oahu to Big Island in a day

Glad we did it but it's expensive and a very long day. Up at 3:45 to get a taxi to the airport for a 6:00am flight. The tour said lunch included, neither we nor anyone else on the tour thought it would be a packet of ch ... more ips and a turkey wrap in a box on board the bus. It was. The tour locations were excellent, the volcano, lava tube, waterfalls were all spectacular. The guide was good.

Perfect Trip

This was an awesome tour. It went like clockwork and our tour guide, Ernie, was very knowledgeable of the island and took good care of us. I would highly recommend this tour.

Tourists smiling on a tour through the Big Island of Hawaii Rainforrest

Everyone who visits Hawaii Volcanoes National Park wants to see lava.  You go there hoping to see lava fountaining into the air like on a National Geographic magazine.

Sorry to tell you, most visitors do not see lava.

Unlikely lava on a volcano tour

Here’s why: Lava is dangerous. As soon as lava is fountaining or flowing in a certain area, Hawaii Civil Defense determines if it is safe to allow people near it.  Usually it is not safe and the area is closed off.

How to see lava on a volcano tour

The best way to be sure you will see lava is to take a helicopter volcano tour. You will see it from hundreds of feet away, but it is still magnificent.

The chances of seeing lava from a helicopter are very high, but not guaranteed. Volcanoes are extremely unpredictable. Volcanic activity changes every day. The lava flow moves and the surface cools.

Do not make the mistake of going on a volcano tour to see lava. There are so many other reasons to go on a volcano tour. Our volcanoes have an amazing history, cultural significance, biological uniqueness, geological wonder, and a beauty like no other place in the world.

People who go just to see lava and don’t see it are disappointed.  People who go to appreciate everything else about the volcano enjoy themselves. If you do see lava on a volcano tour, it is a bonus and you are a lucky one.

You want a quick answer? Sorry, the answer is constantly changing.

As we mention all over this site, the volcano is active. That means that it is moving and hard to pin down. You might see photos from a friend who saw lava flowing into the ocean a month ago, but now it is nowhere to be seen.

This is why a  volcano tour  is the best way to view the volcanoes. Tours will take you to see the sights in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Then the guide will use his contacts to find where you have the best chance of seeing lava.

Sometimes it is best viewed from inside the National Park. Sometimes it is by the shore in Kalapana. Sometimes it can only be seen from helicopters. Some days you can’t see lava anywhere you look.

The key to an enjoyable visit to the Big Island volcanoes is to go for the volcanoes and consider any sighting of lava as a bonus. If you’re whole purpose is to see lava, you could be setting yourself up for disappointment.

If you insist that lava is your focus, then a  helicopter tour  has the best chance of seeing lava. The pilots search for lava and communicate where the sighting is the best.  When you get close, you can actually feel the heat from inside the helicopter.

Five different Volcanoes are on the Big Island of Hawaii:

  • Kilauea volcano

Mauna Kea Summit

Mauna Kea Volcano Summit. 13,796 ft. Photo https://flic.kr/p/4h5JWS

Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in Hawaii. It is also the tallest sea mountain in the world. From it’s base at the bottom of the ocean floor it is 33,000 feet taller than Mount Everest.  Mauna Kea hasn’t erupted for thousands of years, but is still considered dormant and could erupt again.

Mauna Loa is the largest volcano on earth in terms of volume.

Kilauea is the volcano that most visit us to see.  It is the most active volcano in the world. It began erupting in 1983 and continues to erupt today.

Vog is volcanic fog. It is similar to smog in that it is dirty with particles that are not in typical fog.

Vog is formed when gases from the erupting volcano get into the air, mix with sunlight, oxygen and moisture.

Like smog, vog is not healthy for humans, plants or animals. Many people living near Kilaeau, experience headaches and respitory issues from vog.

Visitors on our tours will see and breath vog, but we rarely have visitors who complain of health issues as a result. Generally, complaints come more often from prolonged exposure by those living near the volcano.

Nevertheless, we encourage all visitors to pay attention to their bodies and take the following precautions:

  • Drink lots of fluids
  • Don’t overexert
  • Don’t smoke

Does vog smell like sulfer? A little bit.

No refunds due to park restrictions.

We will promise an incredible volcano experience but unfortunately cannot control the weather. Guests will be charged 100% of the tour price for cancellations made within 24 hours of the scheduled tour.

A combined minimum of 4 guests is required for a tour to operate. Should a tour not meet the tour minimum, customers will have the option to reschedule or receive a full refund. Advance notice will be provided at least 12 hours before the start time.

How large will my tour be? We operate Mercedes Sprinter mini-coaches with a maximum capacity of 14 passengers. If you’re looking for a private, romantic getaway for two, a small group of just a few, a large corporate event or wedding, we can handle up to 80 passengers at one time!

How comfy are the vehicles? Very! Our guides want to work for us because we pamper the guests AND the guides! Having driven low-roof, hard-seated, worn-out vans in the past, we understand the importance of being comfortable on the ride to the volcano (or around the island!)

Maintaining a fleet of Mercedes Benz passenger vans is more expensive than using inferior vehicles, but we never cut corners on safety or customer service – ever.

Our brand new vehicle even has reclining leather seats! Our vans have high roofs to maneuver through the cabin, adjustable air conditioning, seatbelt extensions, cup holders, and large windows for the best views. Our audio/visual package is top-of-the-line with a large flip-down monitor and separate speakers for video and guide headset. This technology allows for the driver/guide to show video while narrating; it’s the ultimate way to cruise the Big Island!

Where do the tours start? Free front door pick-ups at all major West Hawaii hotels and resorts. We also offer the option to meet at a central meeting point to accommodate a busy vacation schedule, if you prefer. For bed and breakfasts or smaller resorts, we’re happy to work with you. Leave the driving to us!

Can you accommodate wheelchairs? Our vans are equipped to handle the easy storage of a collapsible wheelchair or other medical equipment. We do not have a wheelchair lift, however. We have also installed an extra hydraulic side step for extra easy on and off for all riders.

How much walking or hiking will I be doing? Nearly all tours include the opportunity for a few short walks. However, none of them include any walking longer than 20 minutes with the exemption of the Kona Coffee, Cloud Forest, and Brewery Experience. Should guests choose to skip any of our short walks, guides are happy to make further accommodations.

For guests wanting to do extensive hiking, we are glad to customize a private tour to cover as much as much ground as you like. Our hiking guides are in excellent shape and will be excited to show off some of the many beautiful hiking trails here on the Big Island.

Passengers traveling with a collapsible wheelchair or walker are more than welcome. Please note, our mini-coaches are equipped to handle easy storage of a wheelchair or other medical equipment. We do not have a wheelchair lift on our vehicles at this time.

What should I wear? What should I bring? Although Hawaii is home to the endless summer, there are places and times when the temperature can drop substantially. Temperatures at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park can range from 50 to 75 degrees F. Saddle Road temperatures can get even chillier, to perhaps 40 degrees F. recommends wearing comfortable footwear, a hat and sunglasses, and shorts or long pants. Most guests wear a light jacket or bring long pants for after sunset. You have plenty of opportunities to change as the weather changes frequently. Oh, don’t forget your camera!

Are snacks, meals, and tips included in tour prices? We’ve chosen to work with the best restaurants and caterers on the Big Island to bring our guests an experience of all five senses. We like to eat well and our guests do too!

Tipping is, of course, at the discretion of the tour guest but is customary when great service has been provided. We think our professional tour guides are the very best on the planet and we know they appreciate receiving acknowledgments for their expertise, humor, and ability to make your tour memorable!

Will my cell phone work during my tour? Although some cell phone carriers have spotty coverage on the Big Island, we’ll be within cell phone range for most of the tours. Private or charter tours to Waipio Valley will have very limited cell phone coverage. Locals seem to prefer it that way, too. We have a charger on board in case your battery runs low, but some guests bring their own mobile battery charger. Then again, it might actually be nice to set down your phone for a while, too. We also rely on “The Coconut Wireless” or shouting across canyons to communicate.

Do you operate tours on holidays? On most holidays, we do operate. However, we do not operate our regular tour on the Ironman World Championships in October, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Our suppliers don’t operate on those days, so we’ve elected to do the same. Our guides have to get to the beach sometimes, right? If you or your group do wish to tour on a holiday, call us and we will be happy to make arrangements with other restaurants that may be operating that day.

5. Self-Guided Big Island Volcano Tour from Oahu – with Shaka Guide

shaka guide for a big island volcano tours from oahu

Check Rates & Download the Shaka Guide app and tour here: 🌋 Volcanoes National Park Shaka Guide Tour 🌋

You can always DIY a Big Island volcano tour from Oahu as well. This gives you the flexibility of spending as much (or as little) time as you want at each site.

First, book a flight and car rental from Honolulu to Hilo.

Hilo is only about 30mins from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park compared to Kona which is 2.5hrs away. For maximum island time take the first flight out to Hilo and the last flight back to Honolulu.

You won’t be offroading so you can get rent a regular car vs a 4×4 . Get the car size that best suits your needs.

If the timing is right, I highly recommend stopping in Mountain View for breakfast (or second breakfast?) before entering the park.

I love the deliciously squishy mochi donuts from Mt View Bakery . They have rotating flavors so you’ll never know what to expect. Grab one or two per person then take them next door for what I consider to be the best served coffee on the island .

brian pouring coffee at koana

Koana serves “slow coffee”. Brian only serves pourover Big Island coffee which he roasts himself.

Get a full experience by smelling the bean varieties and watch as he meticulously and skillfully pours hot water over the freshly ground beans. This silky, fresh cup of coffee will undoubtedly blow your mind!

He also serves his own drinking chocolate concoction!

view of a crater at HVNP with mauna loa in the background

Enjoy your donuts and caffeine in the little garden before getting back on the road for the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park entrance.

Entry fee for the park is $30 per vehicle.

While you can drive through the park sans guide, I highly suggest downloading the Shaka Guide’s audio guide Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Tour . I love the quirky voice that narrates sites as you drive along throughout the park with Hawaiian musical interludes. It will be like having an actual guided tour in your own car.

me walking on a lava field

The main highlights you’ll want to hit are the Steam Vents , Uekahuna Overlook , Kilauea Iki Crater Lookout , and Thurston Lava Tube .

To see the active lava you’ll hike Crater Rim Trail from the Devastation Trail parking lot. The 1 mile hike is on a paved path until you divert to the right down a short gravel path to the viewing point. There you will get to see actual lava coming out of the caldera (if it’s “turned on”).

petroglyph at the end of chain of craters road

Keeping track of time, take Chain of Craters Road all the way to the end, passing many craters you can stop at (including Devil’s Throat which is not marked on the map), a petroglyph field (a must hike if you have the time), and finally to the water’s edge to glimpse Holelei Sea Arch .

For a fancy lunch, I would make reservations at the Volcano House restaurant , with panoramic views looking into the steaming crater. Out of the park in Volcano Village are other options like Tuk-Tuk Thai Food Truck or Kilauea Lodge Restaurant .

glass of wine from volcano winery

The beauty of having your own car is being able to tour at your own pace. You might have time for other stops before your flight back to Oahu, like a wine tasting at Volcano Winery , a peak at Rainbow Falls , a climb through Kaumana Caves , or shopping in historic Hilo .

See? That wasn’t so hard to do a self-guided day trip from Honolulu to Volcanoes National Park, was it?

Know Before You Go

If you are flying over from Oahu to the Big Island just for the day you are not going to be able to see the lava glowing and flowing in the dark; flight times are not going to accommodate that. Your only way of seeing lava in the dark is if you take a self-guided tour and stay the night on the Big Island.

Also, the Big Island guided volcano tours from Oahu do not include the 2-mile roundtrip hike to see the lava flow from the Crater Rim Road overlook. You will be able to see smoke fluming out of the caldera from the Uekahuna overlook, but no lava flow.

If you take a helicopter tour you will fly over the caldera and also see the lava from above if it’s flowing.

Check current lava conditions here .

How to get from Oahu to the Big Island for a Volcano Tour?

The only way to get from Oahu to the Big Island for a volcano tour is to fly over. Oahu is 200 miles from the Big Island with lots of water in between. If you’re an avid swimmer, maaaayybbbee you could breaststroke your way across 😛

Otherwise, it’s a quick 45min flight from Honolulu to Kona or Hilo. Hawaiian Airlines or Southwest fly direct from Oahu to the Big Island.

You’ll likely be taking the first flight of the morning to the Big Island and the last flight out (which isn’t very late). The trip will be a whirlwind, but if this is your only opportunity to come see the volcano then it’s the price that you’ll have to pay.

What To Bring on A Big Island Volcano Tour From Oahu?

You’ll only be gone for the day so you won’t need to pack much on your volcano tour from Oahu to the Big Island, but you’ll want to be prepared for bipolar weather.

Kilauea is at 4,000ft elevation so some days it can get a little chilly, especially if it’s cloudy. Highs are usually mid 70s while the evenings often dip down to the 50s. The temperature warms up the further down Chain of Craters road you go. Thus, layers are highly recommended when visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

What to wear : Tank/tshirt Pants or shorts (depending how easily you overheat) Good walking shoes/sandals Light/rain jacket (which can double for warmth if it’s chilly) Hat (the desert sun can sometimes get brutal) Sunglasses

Items to bring : Small daypack (to carry clothing layers and misc items) Camera Battery charger

When is the Best Time for a Big Island Volcano Tour from Oahu?

Anytime is the best time to visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and take a tour from Oahu to the Big Island. Temperature and weather vary little throughout the year.

However, while Kilauea is an active volcano, the volcanic activity is too sporadic to predict. It could be spewing lava in the morning but by evening it can go to sleep.

Epilogue: Easy Day Trip Oahu Volcano Tour to the Big Island

An Oahu volcano tour to the Big Island is totally doable and something to seriously consider on your Hawaiian vacation.

You have many choices like a Big Island in one day volcanoes, waterfalls, sightseeing, and history small group tour. Or a scenic helicopter tour over the volcano. Or even a self-guided tour with the help of a GPS audio guide.

Don’t let that little body of water called the Pacific Ocean keep you from experiencing an active volcano just because it’s on a different island!

When you’re making the big trip to Hawaii, you might plan on island hopping. But what’s the easiest way to get around? And is it worth the trip?

Hawaii island hopping is absolutely worth it. The islands are all incredibly different and it’s easy to get from island to island. But it’s important to know that island hopping can be time-consuming so you want to make sure your trip is long enough for these extra travel days.

To help you plan your trip, let’s get into the details.

Now that you’re about to know how to go inter-island like a pro, make sure you have the other parts of your trip figured out: 1. We use Discount Hawaii Car Rental 95% of the time and it has saved us thousands 2. If you haven’t booked your stay, check out our Where to Stay database 3. Options for Hawaii Island Hopping:

If you’re looking to island-hop in Hawaii, you have a few options. Depending on what islands you’re traveling between, you can get there by airplane or ferry. You can also book an inter-island cruise or a guided tour to island hop for a day.

Let’s look at these options more in-depth:

1. Flying between Hawaiian islands

Flying between the Hawaiian islands is the most popular and least expensive way to island hop.

Hawaii island hopping inter-island flights

Commercial Airlines offering inter-island flights:

There are three commercial airlines that offer inter-island flights in Hawaii:

1. Hawaiian Airlines : The largest operator of flights to and from Hawaii, Hawaiian Airlines has the inter-island routes covered. On Hawaiian Airlines, you can find direct flights between Oahu, Kauai, Maui, and the Big Island. Hawaiian Airlines flies into the major airports on each island: Honolulu, Oahu (HNL), Kahului, Maui (OGG), Lihue, Kauai (LIH), Kona, Hawaii (KOA), and Hilo, Hawaii (ITO).

2. Southwest Airlines : The newest entrant to inter-island travel, Southwest Airlines operates on similar routes to Hawaiian Airlines. You’ll get direct flights between the four major islands. Known for their low-cost fares, they’re generally your cheapest option for inter-island flying (though Hawaiian Airlines has extremely competitive fares).

3. Mokulele Airlines : Mokulele Airlines operates small, turbo-prop planes that fly from the main airports as well as smaller airports on the islands. It is the only airline to fly to both Molokai and Lanai. On the Big Island, it flies out of Hilo (ITO) and Kona (KOA) as well as Waimea-Kohala Airport (MUE). And on Maui, it flies out of both Kahului (OGG) as well as Kapalua (JHM). Just like the other airlines, it also flies out of Honolulu (HNL) and Lihue (LIH).

Things to Consider When Between Southwest and Hawaiian Flying Interisland:

  • Southwest offers free checked bags, a big savings unless you qualify for free bags on Hawaiian.
  • Hawaiian Airlines provides an island vibe with colorful decor and serves juice (passion orange nectar or something similar).
  • Hawaiian Airlines offers better options for seat assignments. If you book early, you can reserve a free seat. They also offer reasonably priced extra legroom upgrades.
  • Hawaiian Airlines has premium options like first-class and extended legroom in economy.
  • If you want USB charging at your seat, choose Southwest (pending fleet-wide installation).
  • Southwest makes canceling and rebooking simpler. Hawaiian does not offer the ability to re-deposit and use funds as easily as Southwest.

Airports on Each Island (+ map):

Each Hawaiian island that you can visit has at least one airport, which makes island hopping a breeze. The airport codes for each airport are:

Oahu: Daniel K. Inouye Airport in Honolulu (HNL)

Maui: Kahului Airport (OGG) Kapalua Airport (JHM)

Hawai’i (Big Island): Hilo International Airport (ITO) Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport (KOA) Waimea-Kohala Airport (MUE)

Kauai: Lihue Airport (LIH)

Lana’i: Lana’i Aiport (LNY)

Molokai: Molokai Airport (MKK)

Flight times between Hawaiian islands:

2. taking a ferry between the hawaiian islands.

If you’re traveling between Maui and Lanai, you have the option of taking a ferry. Expeditions Lanai operates a ferry service for the 45-minute trip between the two islands.

Here’s a video of our day trip to Lanai using Expeditions Lanai to island hop:

If you’re looking to take a ferry to Molokai, you’re out of luck. Unfortunately, while a ferry used to operate between Maui and Molokai , that service stopped in 2016.

3. Cruising between the Hawaiian Islands

If you’re set on seeing multiple islands in a short period of time and you don’t want to fly, taking an inter-island cruise is an option. Norwegian Cruise Line offers options that depart from and return to Oahu, making stops on the neighbor islands.

If a Hawaiian cruise is up your alley, we have more resources for you! We cover all the cruise ports and what to know , the best time to cruise Hawaii , shore excursions on each island: Maui , the Big Island , Kauai , and Oahu . Plus you can grab a comprehensive Cruising Hawaii Guide with everything you need to know, all in one place.

4. Guided day trips

If you’re looking to island-hop just to make a day trip to Pearl Harbor, your best bet might be to go with a guide. Why? Guided tours offer an efficient and stress-free way to see as much as possible in a short day trip. Rather than needing to make reservations, book and pick up a rental car, and navigate a new spot, a guided trip can take care of the headache for you.

Read more about our favorite experience island-hopping for our Pearl Harbor day trip .

Is it easy to travel between the Hawaiian Islands?

Traveling between the Hawaiian islands is easy. The flights are short — 30 to 45 minutes in the air. Just enough time to get a glass of water or POG (Passion Orange Guava juice) if flying Hawaiian Airlines.

How much does it cost to travel between the Hawaiian Islands?

Depending on when you want to travel and how far in advance you book your tickets, travel between the Hawaiian islands can be very reasonable. Flights can be found as cheap as $39 each way on Hawaiian and Southwest Airlines. $39 is the best we’ve seen. Expect to pay between $50 to $100 for a one-way ticket.

How long does it take to travel between the Hawaiian islands?

Flights between each Hawaiian island are short: expect them to last anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes for a direct flight. But even though the flight itself is short, when you’re island hopping in Hawaii, the entire process can easily take 4 to 5 hours (door to door). You’ll need to drive to the airport, return your rental car, go through security, fly to the next island, pick up a new rental car, and check into your hotel.

Expect your travel day to take even longer if you aren’t able to get a direct flight. Many of the inter-island flight options require a stop in Honolulu before heading onto your final destination.

Island-hopping in Hawaii: Fast Faqs

Are there ferries between the hawaiian islands.

There is only one ferry between Hawaiian islands and that is the ferry from Maui to Lanai. There used to be a ferry between Maui and Molokai, but that ferry service was discontinued in 2016 .

Cheapest way to travel between Hawaiian islands

The cheapest way to travel between Hawaiian islands is to fly. You can find inter-island flights for as little as $39 each way, depending on when you want to travel and how far in advance you book.

Easiest way to travel between Hawaiian islands

For most people, flying is the easiest way to travel between the Hawaiian islands. Southwest, Hawaiian Airlines, and Mokulele Airlines all operate plenty of flights each day that will take you between all of the islands.

If you’d prefer to have all of the island-hopping details taken care of for you, then the easiest way to travel between the islands is on a cruise ship.

Should you visit multiple islands on your trip to Hawaii?

If you have the time, you should consider visiting multiple islands on your trip to Hawaii. Each island offers something very unique and different. But make sure you’re giving yourself enough time on each island before moving to the next.

We generally recommend that you spend at least 5 days on each island that you visit. Ideally, you’ll be able to spend a little more time on each island to fully experience it as well as relax.  One ambitious newsletter reading couple visited all 4 of the major Hawaiian island in just 13 days, and while we don’t recommend it, we let them write all about it and share their itinerary .

This Is How Much Money You Need To Retire In Hawaii

7 paauilo, big island, lush landscape, a rural community, and an assurance of safety.

Located on the scenic Hamakua Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii, Paauilo is one of the more rural yet scenic towns in Hawaii away from the crowds of the islands' big cities. This little locale is a former sugar plantation town featuring a laid-back sophistication and inclusive community.

With a small population of less than 500 people, the quaint town attracts visitors to indulge in rural charm and discover the authentic Hawaiian experience.

6 Kalaheo, Kauai

A kauai hidden gem with impressive security and a rich agricultural history.

Kalaheo, a small town on Kauai's north shore with about 4,700 people, is almost crime-free. The town has a rich agricultural history dating back to the 1900s. Today, Kalaheo offers a glimpse into Kauai's past alongside its natural beauty.

Unlike busy tourist areas, Kalaheo makes safety a top priority. The highly regarded Kalaheo Police Department (with a 1:1,200 officer-to-resident ratio) uses K-9 units and data-driven patrolling to monitor the island. This approach has made Kalaheo very safe, with zero violent crimes reported last year.

Kauai enjoys a tropical climate year-round, with temperatures averaging in the low 80s Fahrenheit (around 27 degrees Celsius). If you visit between April and September, you can enjoy sunny weather and explore the Kauai Heritage Museum, Spouting Horn, or hike in the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge.

No matter what time of the year you’ll be visiting, Kalaheo promises you a safe and peaceful Hawaiian vacation.

6 Affordable Islands To Visit In Hawaii

5 kapolei, oahu, beautiful beaches, a low crime rate, and a friendly community.

Kapolei is situated on the southwest coast of Oahu, the most populated island in Hawaii. Its charm lies in its laid-back atmosphere and proximity to natural beauty.

Explorers can tour the scenic Ko Olina lagoons, hike the lush Aiea Loop Trail, or delve into Hawaiian history at the Ko Olina Plantation Cultural Center.

With a safety rate of 7.9, even solo travelers can enjoy the thrills of a Hawaiian vacation without any safety concerns. One core reason Kapolei’s criminal rate is at an all-time low is the diverse employment opportunities across different industries in the city.

Several companies and facilities, including Aulani, Ko Olina Adventures, Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center, and even retail stores like Target have set up shop in Kapolei to provide jobs for go-getter young people. All of these job opportunities have contributed to the stability of Kapolei’s economy, thereby making it one of Hawaii’s affordable small vacation towns .

4 Laie, Oahu

A beautiful, safe town on oahu's scenic northern coast with a strong religious and cultural scene.

Laie, a scenic northern town situated in the Koolauloa District of Oahu island, comes in at number four with a safety rating of 7.8. Stunning beaches like Kahana Beach Park, a haven for bodysurfers and snorkelers, and Laniakea Beach, where majestic humpback whales grace the waters during migration season (November-May), will leave you breathless. It’s safe to say that Laie is one of Hawaii’s best small beach towns. .

Laie stays alive throughout the year with various cultural events showcasing traditional Polynesian dances, music, and demonstrations. While Laie offers budget-friendly options, prices can vary depending on the season. Expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $300 per night.

Given the low crime rate and a strong sense of community, visitors might feel comfortable carrying cash for smaller purchases. However, credit cards are widely accepted.

Every visitor can join the 6,000+ locals of this town to partake in the vibrant cultures of Tahiti, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, and more. During the summer months, Brigham Young University (BYU) also organizes free weekly Laie Sunset Concerts, featuring talented local musicians. These concerts create a fun and safe space for the community to come together.

7 Best Beaches Within A 1-Hour Drive From Honolulu

3 kilauea, kauai, impressive volcanic scenery and a safe, peaceful atmosphere.

Kilauea is best suited for adventurous travelers who can appreciate the raw power and wonders of nature while respecting its dangers. When you think of Kilauea, you might have images of molten lava and fiery eruptions. You’re right to have this mental image, considering the 4,090-foot caldera situated within Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.

The Kilauea Caldera is one sight that is sure to drop several jaws. It is the massive depression at the top of the volcano that is constantly hissing and steaming with lava. Visitors can peer into the Thurston Lava Tube (which, as the name implies, is formed out of lava). Plus, the Jagger Museum offers tourists an opportunity to learn about the region's geological history.

With a population of 3,349 people, Kilauea is considered one of the less populated scenic towns in Hawaii. The 7.7 rating indicates that Kilauea does not trade security for aesthetics. The park rangers and staff are always actively patrolling designated areas to avoid and manage crime rates.

2 Mililani Town, Oahu

Solid security, multiple farms and markets, and a wide variety of aquatic fun.

Mililani Town is located on the central coast of the island of Oahu in Hawaii, about 17 miles northwest of Honolulu. Mililani is among the lovely smaller-town alternatives to Honolulu , just a stone's throw from the capital, and boasts a reputation as one of the safest communities on the island.

This exceptional safety record isn't by chance. Mililani was meticulously developed in the 1960s with a strong focus on safety. Also, many neighborhoods have private security patrols that supplement the Honolulu Police Department’s presence.

Fun activities for Mililani tourists include relaxing at Lake Milani, exploring the Milani Botanical Garden, visiting the Dole Plantation, taking a short road trip to Honolulu town, exploring the north shore, or even taking a hike down the Stairway to Heaven.

As a tourist, you can either pay for a night at one of Mililani’s hotels or settle down in Camp Stimson, a former U.S. Army base turned retreat center that offers affordable cabins and lodge rooms. Either way, your safety at Mililani is almost guaranteed all through your stay. The 7.7 security rating is proof of this.

8 Affordable Islands To Retire To In Hawaii

1 kula, maui, a perfect retirement town with low crime rates and fun-loaded annual events.

Mild weather, a vibrant community, low crime rates, and affordable housing make Kula one of the most peaceful and safest mountain towns in Hawaii for retirement . Kula was once home to Hawaiian royalty; they used the area for its cooler temperatures and fertile lands. Today, Kula still holds onto its agricultural roots, with ranching and farming playing a significant role in the local economy.

Historians will enjoy a visit to the Holy Ghost Church, a stunning white octagonal church built in the 1800s. The Upcountry Farmers Market is a vibrant weekly event where you can stock up on fresh local produce and handcrafted goods.

During the summer, Kula celebrates its agricultural heritage with the Maui Onion Festival, featuring food, music, and family-friendly activities. When September rolls by, the annual Maui Wine & Food Festival is held to celebrate the island’s culinary scene.

The security rating here is a solid 7.7, making it a secure haven for residents and visitors alike. The peaceful atmosphere and close-knit community contribute to the safety of this island town.

Hawaii island customers told to resume normal power usage

Hawaiian Electric told Big Island customers to resume using electricity as normal, ending a call to conserve power on the island after its generation capacity dropped due to some units going out of service.

The Keahole CT-5 unit was online ahead of schedule following a major maintenance overhaul, along with the Puna Steam unit and the Kanoelehua CT-1 unit. These units have a combined production capacity of up to 53 megawatts, which could account for nearly one-third of Hawaii island's typical peak demand of 180 MW.

Generation margins have recovered to the point that conservation can be lifted, Hawaiian Electric said Wednesday.

Hawaiian Electric and independent power producer Hamakua Energy continue to troubleshoot and repair the generating units that are out of service, company officials said.

On March 25, Hawaiian Electric had asked Hawaii island customers to reduce or shift their electricity use through April due to the unavailability of several large generators and cautioned that rolling outages might be needed.

"Our customers made a difference, and we were able to prevent additional shortfalls with their help," said Kristen Okinaka, Hawaiian Electric spokesperson.

Large businesses and government agencies made a significant impact by voluntarily reducing their electricity use, the company said.

Top Things to do in Honolulu, Hawaii

Waikiki Beach, Honolulu, Hawaii

Honolulu, Hawaii , is probably the island state's most famous city, renowned for its natural beauty and status as a hub of commerce. From 2023 to 2025, it features not only as a port of call in 12 Norwegian Cruise Line cruises but also as the main point of exploration in three cruisetours, which allow you to enjoy a longer and more immersive period in Hawaii's capital. There are plenty of things to see and do there, so we thought some guidance could be helpful. To that end, here are four of the top things to do when you're in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Ready to start planning? Explore all Honolulu cruises .

Pearl Harbor Memorial

Visit Pearl Harbor

On Dec. 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor was the site of a devastating aerial attack that would launch the United States into World War II. Today, it remains an active military base but is also a National Historic Landmark as well as the site of the Pearl Harbor National Memorial.

The Pearl Harbor National Memorial combines the USS Arizona, USS Oklahoma, and USS Utah Memorials, which commemorate the lives lost on each of the naval battleships during the attack. Nearby are additional attractions: the USS Missouri Memorial, the USS Bowfin Museum, and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum. Altogether, Pearl Harbor serves as a one-stop education in one of the most important events in American and world history.

According to Pearl Harbor Historic Sites, you should plan to make a whole day of your visit if you want to enjoy the best experience. If you'd like to streamline your visit, consider our Pearl Harbor & Honolulu City, Pearl Harbor & USS Missouri, or Early Bird Pearl Harbor shore excursions.

Take in the North Shore

Lovers of beaches and water sports may want to head to Honolulu's North Shore, an extensive coastal area that comprises 51 beaches. As the North Shore Chamber of Commerce will tell you, this part of Hawaii is renowned for its beaches, bays, and surfing. From October to April, the swells can reach more than 30 feet, making the area an ideal host site for surfing competitions such as the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational.

The North Shore isn't just for surfers, either. Areas such as the Waimea Valley Trail, which leads to the 45-foot Waimea Falls, make it a terrific destination for hikers while the fauna in places such as Laniakea Beach and Shark's Cove means it's an attractive stop for wildlife enthusiasts as well.

If you do decide to visit the North Shore during your day at port, you may be interested to know that we have a shore excursion for that, too.

Bishop Museum exhibition room

Check Out Bishop Museum

Bishop Museum is considered one of the finest showcases of Polynesian culture. It was founded in 1889 to display Hawaiian artifacts and royal family heirlooms belonging to Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, but the museum's scope would later expand to include other items of cultural significance as well as specimens of natural history.

Within Bishop Museum, you'll find exhibitions such as Hawaiian Hall, a three-story exhibition that centers on subjects such as the Hawaiian gods and key historical events, and the J. Watumull Planetarium, an astronomy facility featuring a 50-foot full-dome theater. The museum also cycles through a variety of temporary exhibitions in areas such as art and interactive play.

Step Into the Past at 'Iolani Palace

'Iolani Palace, which also dates back to the 1880s, is a registered National Historic Landmark and the erstwhile home of Hawaii's last monarchs. As such, it's the only official state royal residence in the United States of America.

You have a wide range of tour options at 'Iolani Palace, including docent-led tours and self-guided audio tours. There are also specialty tours that center on specific themes. For example, the Kalākaua Legacy Tour delves into the life and legacy of Hawaii's last king, and the Fashion Fit for Royalty Tour showcases the wardrobes and jewelry of the royal family. Most of the tours follow a weekly schedule, but the docent-led tours (available on Wednesdays and Thursdays) require reservations.

Hawaii is "on the verge of a greater catastrophe," locals say, as water crisis continues

By Li Cohen

Updated on: April 11, 2024 / 8:23 AM EDT / CBS News

In Hawaii, one of the most important sayings is ola i ka wai , "water is life" — a phrase that not only sums up what it means to exist on an island, but what it means to live, period. But now, one of the largest of the island chain's land masses is facing a triple threat to its sole freshwater source, and if it isn't addressed soon, one community member says, "we're in deep trouble."

Despite being surrounded by seemingly endless ocean, freshwater on Oahu, the third-largest of Hawaii's six major islands, is not easily accessible. The island relies on an underground aquifer for its water supply. Replenishing that aquifer is a decades-long natural process, as it takes a single drop of water roughly 25 years to make it there from the sky.

img-9820.jpg

And recent years have seen compounding problems: less rain, leading to significant droughts , and repeated jet fuel leaks and PFAS chemical spills contaminating water systems. All of this significantly limits available water use for locals, many of whom say tourism is only worsening the situation. Just months ago, the world's largest surfing wave pool opened up on the island — filled with freshwater.

"They're not using it to drink or to support life, they're using it to make money. They're commodifying it," said Healani Sonoda-Pale, who is Native Hawaiian and a member of advocacy group O'ahu Water Protectors. "… We are on the verge of a greater catastrophe."

"We are in a water crisis , that has to be made very clear," Wayne Tanaka, director of Sierra Club of Hawai'i, told CBS News, saying that if the reasons for this crisis aren't soon addressed, "We may come to a point where we have to decide … who gets water and who doesn't."

Surrounded by water, Oahu runs dry

On an island, rain is essential.

Statewide, rainfall averages range widely, from just 8 inches to around 400 inches a year, Thomas Giambelluca, director of the University of Hawaii at Mānoa Water Resources Research Center, told CBS News. There is a massive difference just minutes apart. Some areas are extremely dry, while others have the wettest climate in the U.S.

At the university campus where CBS News spoke with Giambelluca, the average yearly rainfall is about 60 inches a year, while nearby Waikiki, two miles away, gets 20 inches.

Water supplies depend on that rainfall, with drier areas having a smaller supply. But those drier areas also face higher demand, as they are where tourists flock and many locals reside. And because the drinking water supply is almost entirely from groundwater, shifting weather patterns can pose a major problem.

"We have the problem of getting water to where it's needed from where it can be found," Giambelluca said. "...When the rain doesn't come, we don't have any second chance, we don't have any other way to get our water supply. We can't pipe it from a nearby state."

screenshot-2024-04-11-at-5-56-48-am.png

Currently, the entire island of Oahu is considered " abnormally dry ," according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. "Severe and persistent droughts," prompting water conservation measures, are not uncommon, Giambelluca said. While officials could work to desalinate ocean water, "that's not the preferred way to get drinking water," he added.

"It's very energy-intensive, and so that would be in opposition to our goals of reducing our dependency on fossil fuels in Hawaii, reducing our emissions," he said.

And as global temperatures continue to rise, that will only get worse — not just on Oahu, but across Hawaii.

"Hawaii is getting drier and drier, particularly since the 1980s," state climatologist Pao-Shin Chu said. "...The consecutive dry days become longer and longer. That's very clear."

But drought isn't the only issue. Warmer global temperatures also fuel more extreme precipitation, bringing more rain in a shorter duration. According to Giambelluca, that won't necessarily help maintain the water supply, as steep watersheds will channel that water into flooding, and rising sea levels will prevent rainwater from having a place to go — not even into the aquifer. Rising seas are already causing significant erosion on coastlines.

Giambelluca explained that as sea levels rise, the ocean will infiltrate the underground freshwater system, physically pushing that resource out while also infiltrating wells and other components of the water supply system that will need to be adjusted.

"It's already affecting those water systems," Giambelluca said. "...There's no question that climate change is going to make problems caused by other factors worse."

In fact, some evidence suggests that after 2030, there will be less groundwater to extract from, Chu said, adding, "that's going to be a problem."

"Without water, there is no life"

For Anthony Deluze, it already is a problem. He manages farmland on Oahu, nestled in between Pearl Harbor, a highway and a shopping center. His land is spring-fed, which he uses to primarily grow taro, a root vegetable considered a sacred staple in Native Hawaiian food and culture. But climate change has made growing taro for his family and community much more difficult.

"The biggest challenge is water," he said. "...Without water, there is no life."

Deluze has managed the land he is on for more than a decade, but within the past five years, he said, the water table has significantly dropped, reducing the available freshwater while more seawater seeps in. Between that and the ongoing drought issues, he didn't have even half the amount of water needed to properly maintain his crops.

"A healthy lo'i [water taro] system needs about 250,000 gallons per day per acre for it to be healthy," he said. "... We were probably getting, in the summertime, about 35,000 per day. And if we're lucky, maybe about 40- to 45,000 in the wintertime, per day. And this is three acres, so we're not even hitting a fraction of what we need."

But it's not just a lack of water, it's a lack of clean water.

"Water quality and water quantity are tied together," Giambelluca said. "...Water contamination is always going to impact water quantity, water availability."

img-9795.jpg

Across the highway from Deluze's farm lies Pearl Harbor and Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, where in November 2021, there was a jet fuel leak in the Navy's World War II-era underground storage tanks. Nearly 20,000 gallons of jet fuel leaked out of the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility, contaminating the base's water system and sickening thousands of military families and locals, many of whom say they are still reeling from the health impacts.

The Board of Water Supply instantly had to shut down three wells that supply water to the island, as the aquifer sits just below Red Hill . A year later, that same facility saw a major leak of 1,300 gallons of AFFF, a fire suppressant that contains PFAS, otherwise known as " forever chemicals ."

"We can't farm with fuel; we can't live, period," Deluze said.

The military has since cleaned up the bulk of the lost fuel and chemicals, but many officials believe some of both could have ended up in the environment regardless.

"Red Hill…did spark off this crisis," Sierra Club's Wayne Tanaka told CBS News.

"If we lose our water, every aspect of life will be impacted and upended. Not just for the next few years, but for the next few generations."

The Hawaii Department of Health has confirmed Hawaii island’s 11th case of pertussis , also known as whooping cough.

This latest case was in a third, distinct region on the island, according to the department, and is unrelated to previous cases.

The last confirmed cases announced April 9 were among two separate households with travel-related exposures, involving school-aged children that attended schools in two geographically distinct areas of Hawaii island.

“These recent cases indicate community spread of pertussis on Hawaii Island,” said the department in a news release. “[Department of Health] strongly recommends staying up to date with pertussis vaccinations. This is very important for infants, young children, those with underlying medical conditions and their close contacts. We want to protect these vulnerable groups who are more likely to develop severe whooping cough.”

All of the confirmed cases on Hawaii island occurred in March and April, DOH said, with several recent ones occurring in infants too young to be fully vaccinated.

In February, five cases of pertussis were confirmed among members of a household visiting Oahu, including a child who was hospitalized.

Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by bacteria, which can spread easily from person to person through the air, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease and Control Prevention.

In its early stages, pertussis may begin like a common cold, but can cause severe coughing fits in later stages that last up to 10 weeks or more, followed by a high-pitched “whoop” sound when breathing in.

Infants who catch pertussis may not cough at all but may experience life-threatening pauses in breathing or struggle to breathe.

DOH said staying up to date with pertussis vaccinations is the best way to protect you and your loved ones.

“This is very important for infants, young children, those with underlying medical conditions and their close contacts,” said DOH in the release. “We want to protect these vulnerable groups who are more likely to develop severe whooping cough.”

Most pertussis vaccinations are available from a pediatrician, family doctor or nurse practitioner. Those without health insurance can contact their community health center .
