Top 5 airlines flying to Scotland

Good flight. The food was served a bit late, hence a hurry to finish before landing. Excellent crew and service

Great to have actual hot tastey meal on a flight. Well done

Excellent meal served with real utensils, cardboard served hot meals instead of plastic utensils and plastic covers. Quick service, friendly and accommodating stewards.

Cabin Crew always friendly and helpful. Seating cramped - foul smelling from toilets, high risk of disease. Guard personal property such as expensive sunglasses Coffee always awful and cold Meal trays toddler sized Not worth the extra cost to fly SQ - use a budget airline, same if not better experience

The premium economy seats were not that great. It could have been more premium than economy seats.

They were able to assist my elderly father and myself after not being able to check in to scoot. The counter service was phenomenal. They did what they could to get us on the next plane so we could catch our Connecting flight. Scoot closed early on us so we ended up missing our flight.

They are great with every aspect of customer service. Helped my elderly father and aided him with using the restroom.

The seat comfort, the food and of course the crew, they made you feel welcome and relaxed 😊

Very slow check in. Food poor and some of the special meals offered were not available. Luggage then didnt arrive and still waiting for news 48 hours later

Left hr late & arrived 1hr late luggage was slow to be offloaded! The flight crew & food were good! Movie selection was ok!

My wife with 5 month son were traveling. No proper support was provided for luggage handling. Although it was requested in prior. My wife sole manage everything and was not as expected.

This was an old 320 without a screen or USB charging port even in the business class. The food could have been better.

a real good flying experince. Everything was excellent right from check-in to baggage collection at destination.

Food is tasting bad, and it is a fusion but not authentic.

Excellent experience and now my preferred airline. Even a fantastic meal with dessert in a 2 hour flight.

off late the crew and the air in the flight is becoming that of a budget airline not the earlier Vistara .

It wasn't clear from where to board flight international or domestic Airport

Information was not clear from where to check in international or domestic Airport at Ahmedabad.

The deplaning experience was bad, since they did not get the aerobridge at Madras on arrival and the bus felt like a local train during office hour rush

i bought a biz class fare but a few days before vistara always changes my biz class flight to economy .. happened to me 4 times .. seated could be wider .. boarding could be more organized .. crew did their best but not enough resources all in all very poor experience

Indigo attempts to make you pay for a seat during check in. I opted to not do this. The result - they allotted me and my minor son seats apart. In the interest of making maximum money, they seem to have lost common sense too. Similarly, even during the flight, the crew are busy trying to serve food to those who’ve already paid for it. By the time they’re done, it’s time to land and no one else is able to get anything. Sadly this seems to be what makes them profitable, customers just need to bear with it till a better airline comes along.

As usual invariably delayed Lots of time in getting chkd in baggage

Staff needs to be trained in managing customers better. Indigo appears to be a low cost airlines in all aspects.

Flight was delayed and also lots of mosquitoes on the flight

Two times the gate was changed and flight got delayed

INDIGO Never On Time & Always Prefer to Shuttle Passengers Like shuttle Corks

I did not like the communication gap existing amongst the staff and the customer. My flight to Nagpur was delayed by two and half hours but it was informed to me on email ( not by W.A. or SMS) when I have already left my home in Baner area. I was painfully detained at airport with luggage when the gate no. 10 was changed to 5. I'll never recommend your flight to anybody.

Seats don't recline, no charging points. New aircraft and very clean. Crew should serve some water atleast.

Wife and I were seated in separate seats across the aisle

There was inordinate delay without any plausible reason. This has become a normal feature of Indigo now a days.

6hrs fly they dont give you a glass of water from seoul to singapore need to buy drink and food plus they charge for bag on international fly is always Free 1 bag from seoul to singapore is Not a local fly you are traveling true asia same story from singapore to Bali no water drink after payment for bag drink cost more the regular airline Well never use this company again we use regular company like Delta korea japan China and even scoot parent company Singapore Air

We had 2 attempts to land at Singapore Changing during a thunderstorm. Everything was delayed by 1 hour plus.

Boarding was not accordingly after front seat, bmf then back seat. This delayed for at least 40mins or more. The staff at Jakarta can do better. Is chaos at the entry to board the plane. This tarnished Scoot reputation when everyone was talking about it.

The crew was not customer oriented at all, even confrontational . The aircraft needs more attention to detail as far as comfort, and the 1 hour sitting at the gate with no air is inexcusable

We flew on the 787 Dreamliner direct to main gate at KLIA2, quick entry via eGate and on the train 41mins after touchdown. Go well SCOOT

Was on scoot plus. The only good thing about the flight was the spacious seats. Tables and armrests were extremely dirty Food: bad Entertainment: non existent Wifi: unable to connect, then was painfully slow that we couldn’t even send messages Good thing we had a night flight, so we just slept throughout.

Not clear why boarding passes could only be issued at the counter and not through the kiosk. I had already check-in on the web, so waiting to obtain a boarding pass 1.5 hours before the actual flight defeats the purpose of early web check-in.

no charging point. food offering is limited and very much on the budget line. Overall is not satisfying for such a price and duration of flight.

We were delayed, but there was never any update given. Everyone was standing at the gate as boarding was supposed to commence at 13:10 for a 13:55 flight. We didn't actually start getting on the shuttles to the plane, until after 14:00. No updates, no information given at all.

Scoot refused to change my flight even though I had booked a flexible ticket. MyTrip wanted to charge me an extra $271 for a ticket that was only listed as $217. I complained about this to scoot and they didn't give a shite. So never again will you be getting money from me Scoot. You can Scoot off.

The Air India lounge in Delhi , was very disappointing! The food was of poor quality and options were limited especially for vegetarians!! Beverages were fine. The in flight crew was excellent! . They helped me with my seat controls - the controls did not work without a hassle or assistance!! A very poor showing for a Business cabin!!! Post flight , the wheel chair passengers ( including Me) were “ shepherded and left waiting twice (an hour or more) before taking us to immigration! I chose to Fly Air India because I want. to patronize our National carrier with the hope that the experience will improve!!! Regrettably, I will have to look at other options for my next trip to India

Mediocre staff, crappy food selections and no entertainment for a 14 hour flight. The only good thing was that it was a direct flight.

Entertainment system was not working and was told I would get a voucher and have not got one. No toiletries were available not even a toothbrush false sweet talk by ground staff

Not comfortable for sitting. Sits are too close to each other and it’s too hard for butt..you need to improve your entertainment section like tv programming, Movies, it’s so hard to kill 15 hrs in long flights .you don’t serve good food like other competitive airlines thats my opinion

Worst International flight I ever had in my whole life time. Boarding is the worst of all and flight experience was also not good. Screens were not working, seats were not comfortable and lot more.

Comfortable seats, on time departures and arrival, and helping staff

Very very impressed with the proactive care and alertness with which ABHISHEK Chowdhary took care of us. Quietl, dignified , very alert, and meticulous. Very impressed. Also with SUNiL Kumar who was there for us in a very helpful way. SHERLY ALEX On Flight 119, BOM TO JFK CUSTOMER ON SEAT 21C, 21ST March 2024

If you are traveling to mumbai -- must try SFO - MUM direct flight. It's a game changer when you are traveling to India. Timings are well designed, optimal and makes the travel enjoyable.

On time boarding, proper information, friendly and cordial approach of staff, particularly crew members and the most important timely available of checked in baggage after arrival.

Air India needs to launch new planes. Seats are worn out, most of the plane's TV screens wasn't working, USB charging ports wasn't working as well so I can charge my phone & watch my download movies, Food was mediocre, the plane smells. How can Air India put through their customers with this bad experience? This complaint needs to get escalated to the upper management. How shameful is the upper management to improve this plane? The flight is going back & forth from NEW YORK & DELHI. Two of the big cities in the world and this is how your experience is for sitting in a plane for 12+ hrs? Get your planes fixed ASAP Air India (TATA Management do your job right).

WHAT TO SEE ON SCOTLAND TOURS FROM INDIA

There are many routes from Edinburgh that you could follow to see Scotland’s top attractions depending on the attractions you wish to see, your length of stay and the pace of your travel. Below are some popular Scotland trip ideas by number of days.

Under a week: For most Scotland trips from India, the Scottish Highlands are the main attraction. If this beautiful wilderness area is on your must-see list, give yourself at least 4 - 5 days to see the most famous Highland sights with overnights in the Inverness , Fort William or Loch Lomond areas. Want to visit some islands? Then plan to spend at least 6 days to travel from Edinburgh through the Highlands and to either the Isle of Skye or the Oban and Isle of Mull area . On this express route of Scotland, you can visit breathtaking attractions such as Loch Ness , the picturesque Glen Coe and Eilean Donan Castle.

1 - 2 weeks: To get the classic Scottish experience on your Scotland trip from India, we recommend travelling in the country for about 10 days. With this much time you can take a journey alongside Scotland’s beautiful east coast to the city of St Andrews and the “Castle Trail” region of Aberdeenshire before heading into the Highlands and onwards. In 12 days or more you can also visit the Orkney Islands and drive along the scenic North Coast 500 route or travel even further to the quiet islands of Harris and Lewis in the Outer Hebrides .

2 - 3 weeks: In 17 - 21 days you can do the ultimate road trip of Scotland, including the east coast, Highlands and many of the major islands -- even the far-flung Shetland Isles , the northernmost point of Scotland and all of Britain.

Wonders of scotland, september 2023, highly recommend nordic visitor.

This is our second tour with Nordic Visitor. Agents used before the tour were always very prompt with responses to our questions. During the tour, we found the accommodation perfect, guide very informative and friendly, and the driver got used to where we needed to go without any problems. We would definitely use Nordic Visitor again!

Alan, United States

Highlights of scotland, may 2023, smooth experience.

Throughout the years we have travelled a lot, but never with a group tour. This trip was our first time and it did not disappoint. The tour guide, the bus driver, our fellow passengers, the weather, accommodation, variety of activities, and how smoothly everything went makes me question why we never toured like this before!

Kimberley, United States

Wonders of scotland, april 2023, amazing experience.

We had an amazing experience with Nordic Visitor! Our guides, Richard and Tim, were organised, knowledgeable, and very friendly! You can tell quality and customer satisfaction are very important. We will be back!

David, United States

Scottish highlands & isle of skye, september 2023, an unforgettable holiday.

It was an unforgettable holiday. They took care of everything, and we got to wonder and explore with little hassle. If you want to visit Scotland (or anywhere else Nordic Visitor has tours) they are the way to do it. Already talking about our next adventure with Nordic Visitor.

Carol, United States

Scottish highlands & isle of skye - private, may 2023, an indescribably fantastic experience.

We are two middle-aged women who had never been to the UK before. My sister-in-law always wanted to go to Scotland, so I started researching and came upon Nordic Visitor through internet searches. I checked for reviews and found the company to be highly recommended. I started corresponding with Kirsten. She was extremely kind, very helpful and was able to put my nervous mind at ease. The package she put together for us was perfect! From my first email, the airport pick up and drop off service, and the tour with Dave, it was an indescribably fantastic experience!

Kathleen, United States

Scottish highlands & isle of skye winter - private, february 2023, i can't thank nordic visitor enough.

This is our second trip in two years to Scotland with Nordic Visitor, and we are seriously thinking about another. I can't thank Chris enough for his patience and expertise when booking this trip.

Andrew, United States

Classic scotland, june 2023.

The tour package materials were top notch. Spiral bound itinerary, recommended activities, restaurant recommendations and the large-scale road map of Scotland were a nice touch. Magdalena, our Nordic Visitor representative, responded promptly to our questions. Accomodation was all great.

Bethany, United States

Classic scotland, may 2023, perfect vacation.

For our 50th wedding anniversary, we trusted Nordic Visitor to make our vacation a memorable one, and they made it beyond special. Chris, our tour planner, did everything to accommodate our needs and answered our questions quickly. It was an absolutely perfect vacation!

Carlo, United States

A scottish christmas to remember, december 2022.

We booked a 4-day Christmas Tour of Edinburgh which included hotel accommodation, a walking tour of the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle, a day tour of the Highlands and Lowlands, castles, and lochs, and also a whisky distillery tour. The hotel was in an amazing location near the Christmas Markets and popular attractions. The day tours were such a wonderful way to experience the countryside outside of Edinburgh. We also added a driving service to drive us to and from the airport and the drivers were so lovely. The care package left at the hotel consisting of maps and suggested eateries was such a delightful bonus. We loved that every aspect of our trip was planned and ready for us once we arrived which diminished any travel stress that one may experience when travelling abroad.

Barbara, United States

Best of edinburgh - loch ness & highlands, june 2023, we were in good hands.

As first-time visitors to Edinburgh, and senior citizens, our choice to use Nordic Visitor was an excellent one. The welcome package we received at the hotel was really helpful, with our tour vouchers, maps and restaurant recommendations. We would not have known what hotel to select and the one selected for us was perfect. The choice of tours offered was perfect for a 5-day visit. So glad to learn about the Royal Mile and visit the castle. The trip through the Highlands and Loch Ness was beautiful. Our travel agent, Rebecca, always quickly responded to email questions prior to departure. Thank you! Nordic Visitor made our trip easy and rewarding. We were in good hands.

Noreen, United States

Complete scotland & ireland, april 2023, highly professional service.

Nordic Visitor is a highly professional tour company. From beginning to end, we have no complaints. Our travel consultant, Chris, was very quick to answer all our questions from start to finish. Could not be more pleased.

Jana, United States

Scottish highlands & isle of skye - winter, november 2022, absolutely wonderful.

Our trip was absolutely wonderful! Magda was great to work with and helped us through the whole process. Everyone we worked with from the beginning through the end of the trip was absolutely marvellous.

Flights to Scotland from India

The two major international airports in Scotland are in Glasgow , Scotland’s largest city, and in Edinburgh , the usual starting point for Nordic Visitor tours. Trips to Scotland from India typically involve one or two connecting flights, usually at major airports such as London Heathrow. Some of the largest airlines with 1-stop flights from India to Scotland include (but are not limited to) British Airways, Emirates and KLM. We recommend checking with the airlines for flight availability and timetables. Flights are not included in Nordic Visitor packages.

The distance between Scotland and India is roughly 7,692 km (4,780 miles) thus the India to Scotland flight time can be lengthy with the airport layovers. To give you an estimate, a British Airways flight from Mumbai to Edinburgh can take from 13 hours or longer, depending on the duration of the connection in London. As the time difference between Scotland and India (Mumbai) is 5 hours, we at Nordic Visitor highly recommend adding an extra day to the start of your tour Scotland trip package from India.

Even though Scotland’s rules have ended, other countries may still have travel rules in place. If you live in Scotland, you should  check GOV.UK’s foreign travel advice   for every country you're planning to visit.

COVID-19 vaccination for travel is only available if you’re traveling to a country that requires proof of coronavirus vaccination for entry and you do not have the number of doses required. There are very few countries in the world that require proof of COVID status to enter. Most countries have no requirements at all, and some will allow you to enter if you take a coronavirus test prior to travel.

If you need a coronavirus vaccine, please contact your local health board to discuss your circumstances.

If you need to prove which vaccinations you’ve had when you arrive in another country, you can normally use your NHS Scotland COVID Status app to do this.

Future changes to travel advice

New covid travel rules in Scotland, or any other country, may be brought in at short notice. You should always check the latest advice for each country you’re planning to travel to before booking your trip and before you go.

Moving to Scotland, UK: A Complete Guide

Last updated on

Planning to move to Scotland? There can’t be a better time! With Brexit, the demand for skilled workers has increased by leaps and bounds. Progressive work culture, excellent public transportation, free healthcare, revered universities, friendly locals, breathtaking scenery, and an engrossing history…could there be more reasons for moving to Scotland? Read our post to find out visa requirements for Indians.

SCOTLAND | THE UNITED KINGDOM

Scotland is captivating: the scenery is wild, the cities are multicultural, and the whisky memorable. It wasn’t where we thought (or, planned) to move to but in May, our plans and the plans of other people and destiny and a gazillion moving parts of the universe converged in a way that suddenly, at the end of June, we were applying for visas and packing our bags over continents and oceans to this small nation crammed with beauty. We arrived in August, I on a skilled worker visa and Aninda on a student visa, to start our lives again, afresh. We have hardly stepped outside of Edinburgh but this city, with its bookshops and endless walks, has enraptured us.

This post isn’t so much about the move as it is about the logistics of the move. Like India, the United Kingdom can often seem like a land of endless paperwork and bureaucracy, and guidelines that keep changing, especially during the pandemic. This list isn’t exhaustive but we hope that it can help you plan your move and settle down in the land of tartan and whisky.

Moving to Scotland

Applying for a uk visa, living costs in scotland, booking flight tickets, packing your bags, finding accommodation, opening a bank account, collecting your biometric resident permit (brp), completing a police check, completing your right to work, submitting the starter checklist, registering with a gp.

DISCLAIMER : This guide sums up all the processes that we followed when moving to Scotland from India. Every case is different and you may not have to go through all the hoops that we had to. Immigration can be complicated and we cannot provide legal advice. If your situation is complex or when in doubt, it is best to hire a solicitor who will help you navigate the many loops.

Booking your trip via the links on this page will earn us a small commission, at no extra cost to you. Thanks for your support – Mohana & Aninda.

Moving to Scotland: Planning

To move to Scotland, you will need a visa. Though Scotland has a devolved government, immigration is in the reserved list. Therefore, there are no Scottish visas. To come to Scotland, you must apply for a UK visa. The UK offers various types of visas to Indian passport holders. Your individual circumstance will determine your visa type .

If you intend to work in Scotland, you will most likely need to apply for and get a UK Skilled Worker visa .

NOTE : The Scale-up Worker visa is a new visa introduced in 2022 that allows you to come to the UK to do an eligible job for a fast-growing UK business. For more information, see this page . Medical professionals may be eligible for a Health and Care Worker visa.

In most cases, your employer will sponsor your UK visa from India. The UK government website says that to qualify for a Skilled Worker visa , you must:

  • work for a UK employer that’s been approved by the Home Office
  • have a ‘certificate of sponsorship’ from your employer with information about the role you’ve been offered in the UK
  • do a job that’s on the list of eligible occupations
  • be paid a minimum salary – how much depends on the type of work you do

NOTE : Some work visas may require proof of English language. See this page for more information.

You will need a student visa to study in the UK. Your university’s website should have detailed information on the visa process.

After the course, you may be able to switch to a Graduate visa that gives you permission to stay in the UK for at least two years after successfully completing a course in the UK.

Visa Processing Time

You have to upload your documents and appear for biometrics at your nearest visa application centre. The standard time for visa processing is 15 working days. Priority processing is five working days but there is no guarantee, especially in busier times of the year. There is also a super-priority which is available at limited centres.

You will receive a decision letter from UKVI (a public service portal providing information for UK visas and immigration) informing you of their decision. If your application is successful, the vignette will be on your passport. Note that you must enter the UK within the date on your vignette; if you fail to do so, you have to contact the local UKVI. If you are moving to Scotland on a skilled worker visa, you can arrive in the country no earlier than 14 days before you start working.

NOTE : The information in this section is specific to Edinburgh.

Budgeting for living costs is another crucial piece to consider when moving to Scotland. Edinburgh is the second most expensive city in the UK. And rents are exorbitant, especially in the city centre. Your budget will depend on your lifestyle, of course but don’r be disheartened as there are lots of free things to do in Edinburgh . Other cities, like Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen, and Inverness, are considerably less expensive than Edinburgh.

Can I buy a house in the UK on a Skilled Worked Visa? (2024)

Yes you can buy a house while on a skilled worker visa. If you can pay at least a 25% deposit, you will have choices in terms of a lender. Otherwise, if you are looking for at least a 90% LTV, you must fulfill one of two criteria: (a) Have been resident in the UK for a minimum of 2 years and have at least a year remaining on your visa, (b) Earn upwards of £100,000 annually. Even if you tick all the boxes, the final decision totally depends on mortgage lenders.

Moving to Scotland: Before Traveling

Non-stop flights connect many Indian cities to Heathrow and you can also book an onward ticket to your preferred airport in Scotland. Most flights to Edinburgh and Glasgow via Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, Frankfurt, Paris, and Amsterdam are available from Delhi and Mumbai. Due to restrictions for Covid, a limited number of flights are available from India to the UK.

If you fly into Heathrow, you can travel to Scotland either by plane, train, or coach. Flights are also available from Gatwick and London City airports. We flew from Kolkata to Heathrow, then rode the LNER train from King’s Cross station to Edinburgh Waverly. If you don’t have too many bags, consider taking the tube to St. Pancras; it is cheap (£3 to £5) and takes about an hour to reach London. Cabs can charge around £100 depending on the time of the day.

HOW TO FIND CHEAP TRAIN TICKETS IN THE UK : We always buy our train tickets on Trainline who offer a split fare option that shows you the cheapest fare on any route. We also buy an annual railcard to shave off 1/3 of your ticket fare on every journey!

Don’t be tempted to bring a year’s supply of your favourite snacks! Scotland is a multicultural country and chances are you can shop for things from anywhere in the world in most of the big cities. Specialized shops, which you can find in every town and city, cater to the diaspora. We have pretty much found everything in the Indian grocery stores in Edinburgh! Because Indian food is such an integral part of the food scene here, most stores carry quite a large selection of ingredients. Larger grocery chains, like Sainsbury’s or Tesco, also carry a good selection of items from across the globe.

But if you do intend to carry food items– I bought a jar of my father’s mango pickles and a jar of freshly ground garam masala– before you travel, carefully peruse the list of items you can and cannot carry into the UK. Items like rice, milk products (baby food is exempt), and meat are not allowed. Most fruits require a phytosanitary certificate. You can find the complete list here: Bringing Food into Great Britain . Note that Northern Ireland has a separate list.

European cities were built for amblers! So, bring a good pair of walking shoes. We aren’t into buying clothes unless we need them, so we brought the clothes we wore to work in India, a few ethnic wear, and whatever few woolen garments we had. We bought two new pairs of jeans. Winter garments are best bought in the UK unless you are coming from a place that sees really cold winters. If you love thrifting, there are charity shops here. They are not as overwhelming as Goodwill in the US but if you are a determined thrifter, you will find some amazing pieces. We got a winter jacket for only 20 quids! You will also need a rain jacket and boots. And hats and scarves and gloves! Perhaps a snow boot depending on where you are.

Electronics

Bring only necessities and do not forget to bring an adapter when you are moving to Scotland from India. The plug type here is G, which is the plug that has three rectangular pins in a triangular pattern. Scotland, like the rest of the UK, operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz. Adapters are available in local stores and also at IKEA.

NOTE : You can only carry up to USD 10,000 out of India in cash and/or traveler cheques.

Most folks rely on credit cards; we do not have credit cards. We got Forex cards, one each from Axis Bank and ICICI Bank, and loaded them with GBP. We were able to pay at most places with these cards. Charges we paid: a one-time fee for the card and a currency conversion fee when loading the card. Both banks allow you to load your card using the mobile app.

We also bought some pound sterling before traveling and carried them with us. Both credit cards and Forex cards charge an exorbitant fee if you withdraw cash from an ATM abroad. Remember that it is cheaper to exchange in Indian banks; rates are higher at airports and UK currency exchange shops.

ICICI Bank also allows account holders to create an account with their UK subsidiary while they are still in India. We have not used this facility, but you can reach out to your nearest branch for more information.

We use Wise to transfer money from the UK to India . Transfer is exceptionally fast and the money is deposited in our Indian accounts in less than an hour! Besides, Wise offers the best GBP to INR exchange rates.

Moving to Scotland: After Arriving

In most cases, you will either fly into Glasgow or Edinburgh airport. Most flights from India to Scotland have a transit in either Doha, London, Frankfurt, or Zurich. In 2021, there were covid restrictions on Indian travellers, so we flew into London, then travelled by an LNER train to Edinburgh Waverly from King’s Cross (Heathrow to King’s Cross by taxi). In Edinburgh, you can reach the city on Airlink and Skylink buses or ride the tram. Taxis are always available.

If you are moving to Scotland from India, chances are your employer will provide temporary accommodation for a certain period of time (usually 2 weeks to 1 month). If not, book a hotel. We use Booking.com to book aparthotels for their excellent deals and free cancellation options. Use this time to find a place to live.

Start by looking up websites like Zoopla, Rightmove, and OpenRent. Set up search filters to match your requirements. Set up alerts. As soon as you get a new alert, call the property manager or the owner and schedule a viewing. If it is a particularly busy time of the year, you may notice that available viewing slots are booked within minutes of the property becoming available; don’t be disappointed, just wait for the next one. Note that almost all places will require you to come for an in-person viewing before you can actually submit an application.

Once you bag a viewing, view the property. If you like it, express your interest immediately and submit an application. If it goes through and the owners are happy to have you as tenants, you will be required to pay a deposit. In Scotland, all deposits are held by three tenancy deposit schemes , and the amount that can be charged as a deposit cannot be more than two months’ rent. Sign the contract, pay the first month’s rent, and move in!

TIP : When you are budgeting for rent in cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh, don’t forget about the council tax. The amount will depend on the council tax band that the property is in. In Edinburgh, you can pay annually or in monthly or quarterly installments. If you are a full-time student, you can get a student discount; reach out to your university for details.

In Scotland, you must have two documents to open a bank account: identity proof and address proof. All banks will have a detailed list of which documents they accept. Chances are as a new immigrant to the country, you do not have proof of address. Ask your employer for a letter explaining that you are an employee and that you are living in temporary accommodation. Most high-street banks like Barclays, HSBC, and Bank of Scotland will accept it. If you are a student, your university will issue you a similar letter. If this does not work, try opening an account with an online bank like Monzo or Revolut. Some online banks like Starling will also ask for proof of address.

You will have to collect your BRP from a post office. When filling up your visa application, you have to submit the address of your preferred post office. After arriving in Scotland, visit the post office with your passport and the decision letter from UKVI and get your BRP. The decision letter will contain information regarding when to pick up your BRP, how long will the post office hold your BRP, etc.

TIP : If you are a student, you may be able to pick up your BRP at the university.

Not everybody requires to complete a police check. Check your decision letter to see if you need one. Instructions will be in the letter.

Choosing an Energy Provider

Energy has become very expensive in the UK in the wake of Covid and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. As such it is important that you compare energy providers to get the cheapest deal. We have used Octopus since day 1 and absolutely recommend their service. Customer service is excellent and prices are lower as compared to other providers. If you sign up to Octopus with our referral link , you will get a £50 sign up bonus!

It is essential that you prove your right to work in the UK to your employer. Your employers should provide you with instructions for this. For details, see Prove Right to Work . Fill up the form with the requested details, then share the final code with your employer.

To put down the correct tax code for you on the payroll, your employer will require you to complete the started checklist. Print the form, fill it up, and submit it. For details, see Starter Checklist .

Once you find a place to live, look up your nearest GPs and register as soon as possible. If the nearest GP cannot accommodate you, try the next one on the list. To register, you must submit your passport or your BRP and complete the required forms. Note that you must register at a dental clinic separately.

TIP : You must register with a dental practice separately. Not all dental practices take NHS patients, so call ahead to enquire.

So have you decided to move to Scotland? Come for the dramatic scenery. Stay for the generous hospitality.

What better place is there to start this road trip than a day out in Edinburgh ,  Scotland’s capital city. Filled with some of Scotland’s most significant, historical buildings and stories, the capital is a buzzing metropolis that will leave you begging for more.

Kicking off our epic Scotland road trip in the vibrant, buzzing and historical city of Edinburgh, let’s begin with a sunrise at one of the Most Famous Landmarks in Edinburgh – the Edinburgh Castle. If you walk along the Royal Mile to the foreground of the castle you will be treated to magnificent views over the surrounding city and countryside.

The castle itself is open from 9.30am on most days, so if you are an early bird you might want to head back into town to grab a bite to eat before returning to learn the fascinating history of the castle. We recommend the Hula Juice Bar, which can be found just 5-minutes away at the bottom of Victoria Street.

Once the castle is open you can take a full tour of the fascinating history and the stories it has to tell. Entrance will cost a fee and includes a free, 30-minute guided tour of the castle and the grounds. We recommend that you buy tickets online, as they are a couple of pounds cheaper than at the gates.

Edinburgh Castle | Scotland | theETLRblog

The next stop from the castle is just a 5-minute walk away and is one that you may have already visited. Incredibly photogenic and lined with quirky and interesting shops to browse, the sloping road of Victoria Street is actually the most photographed street in Scotland. Featured in movies such as The Avengers, this street is constantly bustling with tourists browsing the shops and attempting to get a photo.

If you do wish to get an isolated photo on this street, your best bet is to head here first thing in the morning, otherwise, you can visit at any time of the day and check out the shops. It is believed that this street and the tiny, quirky shops are the main inspiration for J.K. Rowling’s Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter series.

It may be for this reason then that there is a full shop dedicated to the magical world, selling a huge range of HP souvenirs and trinkets. Browse the shop and decide which magic wand is the best fit for you before we move onto our next stop.

Head back to the top of Victoria Street and take the quick walk along to the statue of Grefriar’s Bobby. This small statue is dedicated to the memory of the fiercely loyal Skye Terrier, whose partner was a man named John Gray. The story of this small dog is a real tear-jerker and is the inspiration of many children’s movies across the world.

When John Gray passed away in 1858, it is said that his faithful companion spent the next 14 years of its life guarding his grave. This little dog then sadly passed away in 1872 at the old age of 16 and was forever cemented in history with the story of this love and dedication.

It is believed that if you give the dog’s nose a gentle tap it will bring you good luck, however, due to people rubbing too hard the statue is losing its coating on the nose. When you visit the Greyfriar’s Bobby be sure to protect the statue by only touching the nose lightly.

Statue of Grefriar’s Bobby | Edinburgh, Scotland

It is time to finish off your first day in Edinburgh at the city’s most stunning sunset point, Calton Hill. Situated right in the centre of Edinburgh, Calton Hill is a UNESCO Heritage Sight , complete with museums and monuments to Edinburgh’s rich history.

The panoramic view from the top of Calton Hill provides a fantastic view of the city centre of Edinburgh, as well as a view reaching as far as the sea on the eastern coast of Scotland. This is a very popular sunset spot in Edinburgh and is a fantastic way to rub shoulders with tourists and locals alike.

Relax at the top of Calton Hill and enjoy a sunset to remember to finish off your first day of this Scotland road trip. Don’t stay up too late, however, as we have another long day tomorrow!

There is a huge range of accommodation choices in Edinburgh, so no matter what your taste of comfort is there will be something for you. Our top recommendation, in this Scotland Travel Guide , for a mid-range and comfortable place to stay will be the Haymarket Hub Hotel , which is located just a 15-minute walk west of the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle.

Day Two – Stirling

Heading north from Edinburgh across the famous Forth Road Bridge, our next stop, in this 7 Day Scotland Itinerary, will be the heartland capital of Stirling. This historical city was once the main trading point between the northern hills of the highlands and the lowlands of Scotland.

Visit the historical Stirling Castle and enjoy the stunning views of the town centre of Stirling and the surrounding countryside. Entry to the castle will cost a fee, which allows you to explore the internal structure of the castle walls and learn about the many kings and queens that once lived here.

Stirling Castle | Scotland Travel Guide | theETLRblog

From Stirling Castle, head to the outskirts of Stirling town centre and visit the towering Wallace Monument. This beautiful structure was built in the 19th century in memory of the historically significant figure, William Wallace.

This 11th-century soldier played a huge part in the Wars of Scottish Independence and was responsible for the huge victory at the Battle of Stirling Bridge, where he used tactics and wit to defeat a much larger English army.

You can enter the monument itself and climb to the top, visiting the multiple exhibitions along the way, and enjoy the best view of Stirling from the top. If you do not wish to pay another entrance fee, the walk to the top of the hill is completely free and has information points along the way as well.

india to scotland travel time

Next, it is time to head back into the town centre of Stirling and visit the ancient Church of Holy Rude. Dating back 900 years, this is one of the oldest buildings in Scotland, however, we are here to enjoy the view that lies behind the church in the graveyard.

As you walk through the peace and quiet of the graveyard, head to the highest point and discover the best sunset spot in Stirling. There is a bench here for you to sit and enjoy the stunning view of Stirling Castle and the distant mountains of the Scottish highlands. That is tomorrow’s destination, but for tonight it is time to relax and get some rest.

The best place to rest your head in Stirling that is both affordable and comfortable is at the Lost Guest House in Stirling’s town centre. This is just a short walk from the bars and restaurants of this vibrant and student orientated town.

Day Three – Cairngorms National Park

Continuing our journey north, we enter the mountainous region of the Scottish highlands and the ancient forests of the Cairngorms National Park, which is also one of the Best National Parks in the UK . The main point that we will be basing our day’s adventures from will be the central hub of Aveimore.

This small village has expanded rapidly over the last few years as it is the perfect place for outdoor enthusiasts to base themselves and explore the surrounding countryside.

Driving 30-minutes out of Aviemore towards the Cairngorm mountains, you will reach the large body of water known as Loch Morlich. This is a hugely popular spot for all kinds of watersports, from kayaking to sailing, to simply going for a swim (if you are brave enough).

It is up to you if you wish to brave the cold, fresh waters of the loch, or if you simply want to enjoy a walk along its peaceful shoreline. There is a watersports hub that lies on the beach at the far end of the loch from Aveimore, which rents out watersport equipment and even has a cafe with a view.

Loch Morlich  | Scotland Travel Blog | theETLRblog

Continuing past Loch Morlich away from Aviemore, you will eventually begin the climb up the winding road to the Cairngorm Ski Centre. In the winter, this is the perfect spot to come and enjoy a range of snowsports, from skiing and snowboarding, to wild ice climbing and even sledging.

The view from the car park is the main reason we are visiting today, sitting high above the ancient Rothiemurchus forest below. Park up here and you can either sit and admire the view, or if you have the appropriate hiking equipment (map, compass, and experience using them), you can head to the hills and enjoy a walk.

Once you have finished in the great outdoors of the Cairngorm mountains, head back into the village of Aviemore for your next stop, the Cairngorm Brewery. Situated at the northern side of Aviemore, we recommend you drop your vehicle off at your accommodation and walk to the brewery. This will allow you to enjoy the tasting sessions that are included in the tour.

The brewery tour is a paid experience that must be booked in advance. It involves a guided tour of the brewery process, as well as an in-depth tale of the brewery’s history and story by an experienced and passionate worker. The tour then finishes with a tasting session, where you can try all of the different ales and lagers that are made and bottled fresh in the brewery.

Once you have tasted the local produce, we recommend you head to the nearest pub and have a couple more of your favourite bottles of beer at the Cairngorm Hotel in Aviemore’s centre. This is also our top recommendation, in this Scotland Travel Blog, for accommodation in Aviemore, being comfortable, central and not overly expensive.

One Week in Scotland - Travel Itinerary and Guide

Day Four – Inverness and the North

Continuing north from Aviemore, our next destination, on this 7 day Scotland Itinerary, is the city of Inverness , the final frontier before the remote highlands of North Scotland. Its a day of whisky tasting and monster hunting for us.

No trip to Scotland is complete without trying its world-famous produce, Scotch Whisky. As you head north from Aviemore, the first distillery you encounter is the remote and rugged Tomatin Distillery.

Out of all the whisky tours we have done, it is here that our favourite has been. This is partly due to the raw and unaltered process tour you receive, unpolished and more realistic compared with others, but also because of the history and remoteness that the distillery enjoys.

As you walk around the dusty and rugged process, smell the ingredients and imagine what life would have been like working here in the 19th-century.

The tour finishes as per usual on distillery tours, with a tasting sample of the finished product of the distillery. If you are driving you should obviously not taste it, however, if you bring a hip flask you can decant it to try later.

Upon reaching the small city of Inverness, the most prominent feature you will see is the red-stone Inverness Castle that sits on the banks of the River Ness. This castle is not open for public admission, however, there is a viewing platform at the top that is accessible to the public.

With increasing pressure from the public to open the castle to visitors, this may well change in the coming years.

Inverness Castle | Inverness, Scotland

As we swing west and begin our journey along the banks of Loch Ness, now is the perfect time to keep your eyes peeled for this mystical beast. In case you haven’t heard, the Loch Ness Monster is a fabled sea monster that is believed to hide in the depths of this sea loch. With many reported (yet mostly all debunked) sightings over the years, no one truly knows if this giant exists. Maybe you can catch a glimpse of the monster and go down in history?

Loch Ness | Scotland Travel Itinerary | theETLRblog

The most photographed castle in Scotland is our next stopping point on this Scotland road trip. The castle of Eilean Donan sits at the meeting point of Loch Duich, Loch Alsh, and Loch Long, and has been the set of multiple Hollywood movies , such as James Bond.

The history of the castle stems back to the times of the Vikings when this area was used as a stronghold to defend against Viking invasions. Today, it is a very popular tourist attraction and can be rented out for special occasions such as weddings.

You can explore the grounds and internals of the castle with a paid admission, or you can admire the view of the castle and the surroundings for free from the car park at the “All the Goodness” coffee shop that lies on the other side of the bridge.

For tonight we will be heading on to the small harbour town of Portree on the Isle of Skye, ready for a bright and early start tomorrow. We recommend the cheap, cosy, and central accommodation of the Portree Hotel.

Day Five – Isle of Skye

As the small town of Portree comes to life, we recommend you pack a hot drink and head down to the colourful harbour to watch the world come to life. Fishing boats will begin to head in and out and the morning sun will slowly bring the world to life. A very peaceful spot to start off an exciting and busy day.

Driving north onto the Trotternish Peninsula of Skye , our first stop is just outside the small village of Uig at the mystical Fairy Glen, which is one of the best things to do in Isle of Skye . We recommend driving along the northern coast of the island and admiring the coastal views all along this route. The roads are small and winding, so take your time and enjoy the view.

The Fairy Glen is situated just outside Uig and can be reached by either driving or catching a local bus. There is limited parking, so you may need to catch the bus if you are not early.

india to scotland travel time

The Fairy Glen is named after the magical and other-worldly landscape that it has and not to do with any fairy folklore. This dramatic and sweeping glen is actually the result of an ancient landslide that happened here thousands of years ago.

When you visit the Fairy Glen we ask that you are conscious of where you walk and do not venture from the path. The footsteps of the thousands of tourists that visit this beautiful part of Skye every year has had a devastating effect on the natural landscape. In order to prevent further erosion, it is important to stick to the path and DO NOT move rocks or stones.

Leave nothing but footprints and take nothing but memories.

As you drive back towards the eastern coast of the Trotternish Peninsula, there is a shorter route that takes you across the mountains instead of around the coast. This route is only open during good weather conditions and is not suitable for large vehicles.

The Quiraing is another example of an ancient landslide shaping the dramatic landscape of Skye. Once you reach the sharp drop of the Quiraing pass, park up your car ad take the quick walk across to the viewpoint. Take care here as the path is slippery and the drop is steep with no safety barriers.

india to scotland travel time

Our last stop on the Trotternish Peninsula and the Isle of Skye , is the hike to see the Old Man of Storr . This pretty trek, although only 45-minutes to an hour-long, is pretty demanding, as it ascends steeply up the mountainside.

The car park for the Old Man of Storr is the noticeable area on your right-hand side as you head south to Portree. From here, there are two viewpoints for the Old Man of Storr, one around 45-minutes from the car park and a higher up one around 1 ½ hrs from the car park. If the weather is good, the view from the upper platform is simply spectacular, spanning all the way across to mainland Scotland.

The Old Man of Storr is once again the result of an ancient landslide that shaped the mountainous region of Skye. Over thousands of years, the harsh climate of Skye has shaped and moulded the mountainside to form a collection the standing stones that you see today. The Old Man is the largest of the stones and gets its name from the face-like features it has that are said to resemble an old man’s.

india to scotland travel time

Heading south from the Old Man of Storr, the best place to spend tonight is once again in the small harbour town of Portree. We recommend spending another night at the Portree Hotel before we begin our journey south tomorrow morning.

Day Six – Loch Lomond and the Trossachs

We begin our journey south by passing through one of our favourite places in the world: the isolated wilderness of Glencoe and Rannoch Moor. As you drive through these deserted glens you are truly in the presence of giants, with towering mountains all around and a sense of real mythology about the area.

Our first stop is at the Three Sisters viewpoint, where you can get out and stretch your legs. As you walk from the car park and down the steep hill into the glen, think about how the surrounding beauty came to be millions of years ago.

The Three Sisters are the trio of mountains that lie before you on the right as you drive through Glen Coe. These are three extinct volcanoes that played a massive role in how the landscape of today was formed.

Pulling in on the left towards the grand outline of the Kingshouse Hotel, it is time to introduce yourself to some of the locals in this region. One of the most unique experiences, that you will have in your Scotland road trip awaits!

The Kingshouse Hotel is a popular stopping off point due to the herd of friendly deer that tends to spend time in this area. These deer are so accustomed to human contact that they will come right up to you to say hello.

india to scotland travel time

Sadly, this comfort comes from the years of humans interfering with wildlife and feeding the deer of this area. This has happened so much that these deer are now completely reliant on humans for survival and depend on us feeding them and their fawn.

It is too late for these deer, however, please let this be a reminder as to why we should not interfere with wildlife and why we should not feed wild animals.

As you reach the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond, our first stop is roughly halfway down its western coast so admire the view and take care of the winding roads. At the Inveruglus Visitor Centre , just before the hydro station on your right, pull in and get out to stretch your legs. This is the spot of Loch Lomond’s most epic viewpoint, the Inveruglus Pyramid, which is also known as An Ceann Mor.

This 8-metre tall viewing platform was installed in 2015 and offers the finest view of Loch Lomond from the top. The platform has a free-to-use telescope at the top and custom fitted seats for people to relax and enjoy the tranquil surroundings of Scotland’s largest loch.

india to scotland travel time

As the sun begins to set, it is up to you whether you wish to relax on the banks of Loch Lomond or continue down to Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow. It is here we will be spending the night, ready to get up nice and early for our final day in Scotland.

For your first night in Glasgow, you are once again spoiled for choice when it comes to accommodation. For a reliable, cheap and comfortable stay, we recommend Motel One , which is located right beside Glasgow Central Station and is perfect for getting around the city.

Day Seven – Glasgow

It’s our last day of this Scotland road trip and we are back to the buzz of the big city. Not to worry, this final day in Glasgow’s city centre is sure to be one to remember, so let’s get going!

Kicking the last day off, of this 7 Day Scotland Travel Itinerary, with our last sunrise in Scotland, it is time to discover Glasgow’s best sunrise spot: the Queen’s Park Flagpole. You can easily reach here by either catching the first train from Glasgow Central to Queens Park, or by making the 45-minute walk south from the centre.

As the smoking chimneys and towering abbeys of the city slowly come into view, the city begins to buzz into life. Chill out here for a little while and enjoy the view over Glasgow and prepare yourself for the final day of this epic one week trip to Scotland.

india to scotland travel time

Once the day has well and truly began, it is time to head back into the city centre and discover the many beautiful street art murals that are spread around the city. In total, there are currently 29 different murals across the centre of Glasgow , a list that is constantly changing and growing.

If you wish, it is possible to pay for a guided tour of the city’s street art , or you can simply follow the official map of the current mural trails and discover them for yourself.

india to scotland travel time

Rounding off our Scotland road trip with a bang, it is time to check out Glasgow’s best panoramic viewpoint , which is situated right in the centre of the city. Just off Buchannan Street is a small exhibition centre known as The Lighthouse. Mainly featuring the work of Scotland’s best architects, The Lighthouse has an ever-changing exhibit of different pieces of work.

Once you have browsed the multiple exhibitions, head to the Charles Rennie Mackintosh exhibit and climb the spiralling staircase to the top of the tower. Here you can head outside into the narrow balcony and walk around the circular tower to admire the beauty of the city centre from all directions.

This is our favourite place to admire the sunset or late evening in Glasgow and is the best place not only to finish off your final day in Scotland, but also be the last destination on this One Week Scotland Travel Itinerary.

Tips and Recommendations for Your Scotland Road Trip

Before you set off on your Scotland adventure, following this 7 Day Scotland Travel Itinerary , here are some  tips and Travel Hacks that you should know to make your One Week Trip to Scotland a little smoother.

Scotland is a country that is famous for its weather (or more specifically, lack of GOOD weather). As you head north to the mountainous region of Scotland, the humid Atlantic winds precipitate easily over the highlands and rain is a very common occurence. On average, it rains in Scotland 250 days of the year.

That being said, the period of time when it is LEAST likely to rain is during the late Spring months of May and June. During this time, the warmer weather begins to show and the native bugs have not quite come out to bite yet. It is for this reason that we suggest that Spring is the best time to visit Scotland .

As mentioned before, Scotland is famous for its rain, so the most important item of clothing you pack is a good waterproof jacket (and possibly trousers). As for temperatures in Scotland, it rarely ever reaches above 25 degrees Centigrade, so warm clothes are recommended. The average seasonal temperatures can be found below:

Spring (March, April, May) – 5-10 degrees C

Summer (June, July, August) – 15 degrees C

Autumn (September, October, November) – 5-10 degrees C

Winter (December, January, February) – 0-5 degrees C

The best way to pack for this variation of temperatures is by packing plenty of light clothing that can be worn as layers. This will allow you to layer up or strip off as necessary.

If you are touring the highlands of Scotland and plan on sticking to this One Week Scotland Travel Itinerary, then the only real way to navigate these remote regions is in a private vehicle. The best part is that you can rent a car very easily, as all you need to do is check out the best rental car suitable for you on Discover Cars , or RentalCars.com . There are transport links connecting most of Scotland, however, these will not be adequate for reaching remote locations and will take much longer than by private vehicle.

Renting a Car

The first and cheapest method of transport we recommend is to rent a car for the duration of your trip. Cars can be rented from a number of different UK based car rental companies, such as Hertz or Europcar. A car rental will cost you roughly £10-30 per day , depending on the cover and vehicle you choose.

If you wish to be a little more adventurous and save money on accommodation then a motorhome might be the best choice for you. Motorhomes are hugely popular when exploring the highlands and there are therefore plenty of companies to choose from.

We have personally used the motorhome rental company Bunk Campers and can recommend them as friendly, cheap and reliable. A campervan will cost you from £45 a day and will vary depending on your choice of van and the season in which you book it.

india to scotland travel time

If you are visiting Scotland and only have limited time to explore its amazing history and scenery then this 7 Day Scotland Travel Itinerary is perfect for you. There is so much more to see and do in Scotland and you could spend months exploring the bonnie lands, yet still have room for more.

There is no doubt that once you set foot in the highlands of Scotland and feel the fresh breeze, you are going to fall in love with the beauty of Scotland. It will only be a matter of time before you are back again for more, and when you do, you will be welcomed back with open arms.

We hope you found this 7 Day Scotland Travel Itinerary , to be of help to you, as a reliable Travel Resource for planning your Trip to Scotland . Don’t forget to Pin these images, and save this One Week Scotland Travel Itinerary, for future travel planning.

10 things only Scottish locals know – and you should too before traveling there

Jam-packed with hidden glens, haunted castles and cryptic lochs, overrun with mind-boggling festivals and melodious bagpipe players, and soaked in peated whisky , gin and rain, Scotland can be as baffling as it is brilliant.

This country specializes in astonishing travelers at the same time as confounding them, delivering a double punch of euphoria and disbelief. Not that you’d know it from the chipper locals who take everything in their stride.

For all the undreamed-of scenarios that you can encounter while here – summer hiking in shorts with an umbrella, for instance, or being terrorized by an invisible nuisance, the blood-sucking midge – the truth is that Scotland is an easy country to crack if you know the answer to some crucial questions and practicalities.

What’s the smartest way to travel around when venturing outside of Edinburgh ? How long do you need to make a trip to Scotland's islands worthwhile? Is it really OK to eat a deep-fried Mars Bar in Glasgow ? (Spoiler: yes, but no one ever really does.)

Here are a few key things and etiquette tips to know before traveling to Scotland.

Pack for all seasons, even in summer...

A joke often told is that Scotland had a great summer last year – it was on a Wednesday. It’s a tongue-in-cheek punchline, of course, but there’s a kernel of truth at its core: the country’s weather is a carousel of ever-variegated four-season shifts, with summer days often wet, wild and glorious all in the same place at nearly the same time.

For the most dependably bright and dry weather, visit in May, early June or September. If gray is your favorite color, any time of year will suit you fine.

Female performers on the high street during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland

...and check the weather if you’re going to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival

Look away now if you don’t want the grim news. Despite the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the world’s largest arts gathering, taking place in so-called peak summer in August, the event is often a washout. Waterproof shoes and an umbrella that you don’t mind getting blown inside out are as essential as a healthy appetite for comedy, theater, circus and raucous beer gardens.

Scottish pound sterling banknotes are valid everywhere in the UK

It sounds absurd, but the variety of banknotes in the UK can be bewildering. All pound sterling bills, whether printed in Scotland, England or Northern Ireland, are legal tender and valid across the country. You can spend English bills in Scotland, but many retailers won’t accept Scottish bills south of the border. Some foreign exchange services even provide worse rates for Scottish-printed bills.

Be wary when talking politics

Scotland is a divided country, politically speaking at least. On one hand, the independence movement is growing, but some Scots resolutely want to remain part of the United Kingdom. For a simple crash course, know that Scotland is a de facto separate country already with its own parliament – it exists in a political and monetary union with England, Wales and Northern Ireland – and that way you won’t raise the ire when chatting with locals in the pub.

The next decade could see unprecedented change in Scotland. A second independence referendum is often touted, after the 2014 referendum before Brexit failed to get over the line, but Westminster has resisted the call. Even a bare-bones understanding of the country’s sociopolitical history will deepen the pleasure of traveling to Scotland and remind you that you’re not just visiting a place, but a moment in time.

Camper van parked on a beach in the Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland, UK.

Driving outside the cities can be an art form

On first impression, Scotland is a pipsqueak in terms of European geography. It's easy to digest on the map and then drive around in a matter of days, right? Wrong.

Perhaps the most consequential effect of its jigsaw-puzzle shape, with crooked sea lochs, knobby islands and corkscrewing glens, is that getting from A to B outside the main cities always takes longer than the GPS and Google Maps suggest.

Roads are often single lane, requiring pulling to the side of the road to let oncoming vehicles pass (a friendly wave is part of the roadside theater). Slow-moving vehicles like tractors, campers and motorhomes can grind traffic to a halt, particularly on the now infamous North Coast 500 . Wayward sheep and red deer might also take over the road.

Patience is key, and a car or camper will get you to where you want to go faster – and more efficiently – than using Scotland's skeletal train and bus network . Or take your bike, inflatable kayak or canoe on a Scotrail service, now amped-up with more bike carriages and space for bulky sports gear, to see all the parts in between.

Plan for more time, not less

The biggest regret of first-time visitors to Scotland? Trying to cram too much into a single trip. If you’re spending time in Edinburgh and Glasgow and then the Highlands or Stirling and Perthshire , you’ll need at least a week. Add the Isle of Skye or the Outer Hebrides to your itinerary, and you’ll need two weeks – and you’ll still be struggling to catch your breath.

To do Scotland and its idiosyncratic islands justice, you really need three to four weeks. Travel more sustainably and focus on one chunk in particular, like the Borders and Dumfries and Galloway or Aberdeenshire and Moray . Do this, and you’ll be encouraged to stop more regularly and invest more back into the rural towns and villages you might otherwise whizz through.

Two bagpipers wearing traditional Scottish kilts

Wear a kilt if you want

The stereotypical link between the historical birthright to wear a kilt and the act of doing so is gibberish. Everyone looks better in a pleated, knee-length skirt and furry sporran, regardless of gender, nationality or patriotism to Scotland. If you need a new addition to your wardrobe, there’s nowhere better than Scotland to get measured up in tartan.

Don’t be afraid to join in

Going to the pub is a national pastime in Scotland, verging on a human right. The Scots are among the world’s friendliest, most approachable people. They love to binge on alcohol too – cue a whole dictionary of words for drinking, like blootered, bladdered, hammered, steamin’, smashed and wrecked – and see no harm in inviting a complete stranger to share a drink or dram, particularly around Hogmanay (New Year).

Expect to be invited to parties and pubs more so than you would be in many other places around the world. Like anywhere else, though, take care and be aware of your surroundings.

Family crossing stream, Fairy Pools, Isle of Skye, Hebrides, Scotland

Is it safe to drink the tap water?

Yes. The one thing Scotland isn’t short of is water. Cut down on single-use plastic with a refillable bottle, and take advantage of the free network of rivers and lochs when embracing the great outdoors.

Can travelers get free health care in Scotland?

NHS Scotland, the country’s devolved National Health Service system, is a cornerstone of life, and visitors from most European countries are covered for certain emergency treatments should they have an accident while on vacation. The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is the key for this, while travelers from elsewhere should check on reciprocal healthcare agreements between their home country and the UK.

Time difference

Travelmath provides an online time zone converter for places all over the world. You can enter airports, cities, states, countries, or zip codes to find the time difference between any two locations. The calculator will automatically adjust for daylight saving time (DST) in the summer. You can use it as a meeting planner or a scheduler to find the best time to make international phone calls. World time zones have a positive or negative offset computed from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), or Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). UTC has uniform seconds defined by International Atomic Time (TAI), with leap seconds announced at irregular intervals to compensate for the Earth's slowing rotation. The tz database or zoneinfo database uses the closest city, rather than the more common Eastern, Central, Mountain or Pacific time zones in the United States. Countries often change their daylight saving rules, so please help us stay current by letting us know if you find any pages that need updates.

Politics latest: Key voter on Humza Yousaf's future will make proposals to 'help him out of a tight corner'

Ash Regan, who is the Alba Party's sole MSP and potentially the deciding vote in a no-confidence motion in Mr Yousaf, is expected to meet with the first minister. Listen to this week's Politics at Jack and Sam's as you scroll.

By Trevor Phillips, presenter

I've known Rishi Sunak slightly for almost a decade, having first met him after he penned a thoughtful, comprehensive, well-received report on Britain's minority communities, which I'd say is still the best of its kind.

Sitting down to interview him in a state-of-the-art defence facility this week, I could still see the same energetic, likeable problem solver that I met back then, even if he's now surrounded by the prime ministerial cavalcade of aides, security and media.

That Peloton and fasting regime are clearly doing their job. He's keen to show his detailed grasp of the situation, whether that's welfare reform, defence or migration. It's easy to see why he shone in Silicon Valley and thrived in the Treasury.

However, in the political world he chose, there's a downside to being highly intelligent, disciplined, and super-focused on delivery, as they might say in California.

He betrays frustration with what he - not wholly unjustifiably - sees as a media obsession with polls and presentation.

Unfortunately, as Enoch Powell once pointed out, a politician who complains about journalists is like a sailor who doesn't much fancy being at sea.

He rightly points out that it's his job to make hard choices - for example, funding the defence budget even if it's at the expense of schools and hospitals.

But a political leader should also know that what follows is an even harder job: to cajole the electorate into supporting that choice - and the voters aren't always governed by the logic of the computer.

Read on here...

Lorna Slater, co-leader of the Scottish Greens, has said her party will not be changing its mind about supporting the upcoming motion of no confidence in First Minister Humza Yousaf.

Ms Slater said they would vote in favour of the motion on BBC Scotland's Sunday Show,

"I cannot imagine anything at this point that could change that position.

"This was a spectacular breach of trust."

She was asked if policy offers from Mr Yousaf ahead of the vote could persuade them to abstain.

“[The Bute House Agreement] was based on mutual trust and respect. I do have trust and respect for many of my SNP colleagues," she said.

"But Humza Yousaf himself has broken that and he needs to face the consequences."

Policing minister Chris Philp said he was posing a "rhetorical question" after he appeared to ask whether Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo were different countries.

The MP for Croydon South said he was struggling to hear when he was asked about the government's new law on deporting some asylum seekers to Rwanda by a Question Time audience member.

He told the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg: "I was struggling a little bit to hear the question.

"When I put that point to him I was asking that as a clearly rhetorical question rather than a substantive question, as I think any fair-minded listener would conclude."

What did he say on Question Time?

The audience member, from Congo, pointed out there has been a long history of violent conflict with neighbouring country Rwanda.

He asked Mr Philp: "Had my family members come from Goma [a city on the country's border] on a crossing right now, would they then be sent back to the country they are supposedly warring – Rwanda? Does that make any sense to you?"

Mr Philp replied: "No, I think there's an exclusion on people from Rwanda being sent to Rwanda."

After the audience member objected that his parents were not from Rwanda, the Conservative MP appeared to ask: "Well, I mean, Rwanda is a different country to Congo, isn't it?

"It's a different country?" he said, followed by laughter from some audience members.

Rishi Sunak was quizzed over the local and general elections, the Rwanda Scheme and defence spending today on Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips.

If you missed it, here's your chance to catch up on all the key moments - or watch the interview in full.

  • The prime minister tried to manage expectations for Thursday, saying: "Local elections are always difficult for incumbent parties";
  • Asylum seekers travelling across the land border to Ireland was a sign the Rwanda scheme was working as a deterrent, he said;
  • Despite being asked several times, Mr Sunak refused to rule out a July general election;
  • He declined to comment on polling and, when asked if he would have any regrets should the Conservative Party lose, Mr Sunak said: "You're again focused on all this personality stuff."

A little earlier this morning, Rishi Sunak told Sky News that the movement of migrants from Northern Ireland into the Republic of Ireland showed his Rwanda scheme was working as a deterrent.

But the Irish government is to consider legislative proposals next week on returning asylum seekers back to the UK who have travelled across the land border.

Justice minister Helen McEntee will also meet Home Secretary James Cleverly next week, after saying the number of migrants crossing the border was now "higher than 80%".

"I'll have emergency legislation at cabinet this week to make sure that we can effectively return people to the UK," she told RTE.

Ms McEntee added Brexit was responsible for the UK seeing an increase in people seeking asylum.

A spokesman for Irish premier Simon Harris said he is "very clear about the importance of protecting the integrity" of Ireland's migration system.

"Ireland has a rules-based system that must always be applied firmly and fairly.

"In that context, the Taoiseach has asked the minister for justice to bring proposals to Cabinet next week to amend existing law regarding the designation of safe 'third countries' and allowing the return of inadmissible international protection applicants to the UK."

Alex Salmond asked Alastair Campbell to negotiate on behalf of Scotland with the UK government in the event it voted for independence in 2014, Mr Campbell tells Sky News.

The proposal was made when the pair were in Scotland ahead of the referendum, making tributes to Tony Benn, the former Number 10 communications director says.

"If Scotland had become independent, then that would have been a massive, massive thing for the country, so I would have been very happy to do that.

"I would want people who weren't necessarily pro-indpendence to be part of that team."

As Humza Yousaf fights to maintain leadership of Scotland, the Alba Party's Alex Salmond joins Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips.

Meanwhile, Ash Regan, the Alba Party's sole MP and potentially the deciding vote in a no-confidence motion in Mr Yousaf, is expected to meet with the first minister.

Ms Regan will "make a set of reasonable proposals to help him out of a very tight corner", says Mr Salmond.

"Scotland is lucky that somebody like Ash Regan is in that position."

Independence forces should be "cooperating together to try and get independence back as a priority in Scottish society".

Asked if an agreement can be reached with the SNP, Mr Salmond says Mr Yousaf is "in a very difficult position" but he will be in a "listening mode".

"He wouldn't have sacked the Greens from his administration unless he wanted a significant change in direction," says Mr Salmond.

"One possible outcome of this political crisis is there might be a Scottish election."

Earlier this week, Labour pledged to nationalise the railway system.

Shadow health secretary Wes Streeting says the plan is a "reflection of the failure of privatised rail and the absence of competition".

If you bring the franchises back into public ownership as they come up, the profits can be reinvested into better services and fairs, argues Mr Streeting.

"There is already enormous public ownership of our railways, but they are owned by French, German, Dutch and Italian taxpayers, and our profits go into their countries."

"It's time that we had public ownership of our railways so we can reinvest."

Trevor Phillips continues to put questions to shadow health secretary Wes Streeting.

He is about Keir Starmer's pledge to maintain the triple lock, with Phillips raising statistics showing median wealth for those in their early 60s was nearly nine times higher than those in their early 30s.

"I don't buy into that intergenerational conflict argument. We need to give pensioners the reassurance to know that as they have planned for retirement... that Labour will protect the triple lock."

Wes Streeting is asked about the possibility of a July election, which the prime minister has refused to rule out.

The shadow health secretary says: "He should get on with it. We are not just ready, we are, as with the rest of the country, fed up of waiting."

People are "crying out for an opportunity to deliver their verdict on this government and vote for change", he says.

"That's why the prime minister bottled an election earlier this year, that's why he's bottled it now, and that's why he will have to be taken out of Downing Street by his fingernails."
