Tsavo East safari | Travel & Tips guide

The Tsavo East National Park is one of the oldest and largest parks in Kenya at 13,747 square kilometres. Situated in a semi-arid area previously known as the Taru Desert it opened in April 1948, and is located near the town of Voi in the Taita-Taveta County of the former Coast Province.

The Tsavo East National Park forms part of one of the greatest wildlife conservancies on Earth and is one of the largest national parks in Kenya. It is also known for its legend of the Maneaters of Tsavo, a pair of man-eating male lions in the Tsavo region.

The park also makes up 4% of Kenya’s land mass and has some of the largest herds of elephants in Africa residing there with the opportunity to see dust-red elephants bathing in the Galana River.

Why visit Tsavo East National Park?

Safari in tsavo.

There are plenty of great things to do in Kenya and Tsavo is considered one of the world’s biodiversity strongholds with its popularity mostly due to the vast amounts of diverse wildlife that can be seen, including the famous ‘Big Five’ consisting of lion, black rhino, cape buffalo, elephant and leopard.

Tsavo National Park is also a popular stop-off point on Kenya ‘safari and beach’ itineraries. The western section of this vast park is located to the east of Mount Kilimanjaro and is a wonderland of lava flows, rocky outcrops and red-soil grass and woodlands.

Slightly larger and less accessed, Tsavo East is a slightly better choice than the western side, but both offer great scenery and, as the dense bush dries back in the winter months, very good game viewing and birding that is second only to Lake Naivasha National Park.

The park has abundant wildlife, but due to its size and thicker vegetation game viewing is more challenging. For this reason it is less popular than the Maasai Mara and Amboseli.

However, the park has one of the most diverse landscapes in East Africa, with several volcanic craters and interesting hills.

The park forms the largest protected area in Kenya and is home to most of the larger mammals which visitors will see on game drives including the Big Five with vast herds of red elephant, Rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard, pods of hippo, crocodile, waterbucks, lesser Kudu and gerenuk.

Their red dust coating makes them stand out against the arid environment. Of the big cats, lions are most easily spotted. Buffalo, zebra and plenty of Masai giraffes are some of the other animals you can expect to see.

Tsavo East has a good range of unusual antelopes. This is one of the few places to see the fringe-eared oryx. The lesser kudu is very shy, but can sometimes be seen darting off into the bushes.

The long-necked gerenuk can be found standing on its hind-legs to reach the sparse foliage of trees and bushes. With some luck, you might spot the critically endangered hirola or Hunter’s hartebeest.

Tsvao has a prolific birdlife featuring over 500 recorded species. It has many dry-country specials which are easy to spot, including the magnificent golden-breasted starling, golden pipit and vulturine guineafowl. The park is also the southernmost stronghold for the Somali ostrich.

Drained by the Tsavo and Galana rivers, and the Tiva River in the north, the park comprises semiarid plains covered by dormant vegetation (which bursts into luxuriant bloom after a light rain) and acacia and baobab trees.

There are also three types of grasses found in Tsavo including grouped-trees grassland, Scattered-trees grassland and Shrub or Dwarf-trees grassland to be seen in Tsavo East, but the most widely distributed are the Scattered-trees and the Shrub or Dwarf-trees Grasslands.

Best Time to Visit

Determining the best time to visit Tsavo National Park in Kenya is crucial for maximizing your wildlife viewing opportunities and overall safari experience. The dry season, spanning from June to October and January to February, is the optimal time for a visit.

1. Wildlife Viewing at Its Best

Tsavo National Park in Kenya

During these months, the vegetation in Tsavo thins out, and water sources become scarce, prompting animals to congregate around the remaining waterholes and rivers. This natural congregation makes wildlife easier to spot and observe, providing unparalleled viewing opportunities.

Predators and prey are found closer, increasing the chances of witnessing the raw, untamed action of the African wilderness.

2. Favorable Weather Conditions

The dry season in Tsavo is characterized by clear skies, minimal rainfall, and lower humidity levels, creating comfortable conditions for game drives and other outdoor activities. The roads within the park are also more navigable, ensuring a smoother safari experience.

3. Bird Watching Delights

While the dry season is prime time for mammal viewing, it also offers unique bird-watching opportunities.

Resident bird species are more active, and the thinner vegetation makes them easier to spot. Additionally, this period marks the beginning of the migratory season, with several bird species arriving in Tsavo, adding to the park’s avian diversity.

4. Planning and Availability

Given the popularity of the dry season for safaris, it’s crucial to plan your trip well in advance. Accommodations within and around Tsavo tend to fill up quickly, and booking early ensures a wider range of options and better availability.

5. Balancing Crowds and Experience

While the dry season attracts more visitors to Tsavo, resulting in potentially crowded hotspots, the increased wildlife activity and favorable conditions often outweigh the presence of other tourists.

Early morning and late afternoon game drives are recommended for the best wildlife encounters and to avoid the midday heat.

6. A Time for Photography

The dry season’s clear skies and abundant wildlife provide exceptional photography opportunities. The natural lighting is at its best, and the animals are active, allowing for stunning wildlife portraits and breathtaking landscape shots.

7. Considerations for Specific Interests

If your interest extends beyond wildlife viewing, Tsavo’s cultural and historical sites, such as the Tsavo Man-Eaters’ site, are accessible year-round. However, the dry season’s favorable conditions enhance the overall experience.

By visiting Tsavo during the dry season, you are setting yourself up for a safari experience filled with wildlife encounters, comfortable weather, and unforgettable memories. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned safari enthusiast, Tsavo’s dry season offers a window into the heart of Kenya’s wilderness, promising a journey filled with adventure, discovery, and awe-inspiring moments.

Tsavo National Park

From Stone Age to Safari with Tsavo

Steeped in history, the expansive Tsavo National Park was originally home to a Stone Age community that lived near the Galana River some 6,000 years ago. Later, the Orma people—who still populate parts of Kenya today—made this their territory. The park is now divided into east and west by a railway. Both ‘mini-parks’ offer abundant opportunities and different vantage points from which to observe the African landscape.

Rock-climbing is hugely popular in the Tsavo National Park thanks to Mudanda Rock in the east, and the sharp cliffs of Kitchwa Tembo in the west. Resting climbers will find themselves eye-to-eye with soaring birds of prey, and on a clear day you’ll be treated to magnificent views of snow-capped Kilimanjaro. The clear waters of Mzima Springs attract crowds of hippos, crocodiles, and vervet monkeys, while the park at large is teeming with all manner of wildlife—including the illustrious Big 5.

Both parks cover an impressive 4% of Kenya, making it one of the world’s largest. The endless plains of Tsavo East along with the volcanic hillocks of Tsavo West are home to maneless lions, hippos, leopard, and reddish-tinged elephants. A selection of lodges are scattered around the park offering all the comforts that accompany an African safari experience.

Tsavo National Park Highlights

  • The Tsavo National Park covers an impressive 4% of Kenya
  • Archaeological sites prove it was also the home to a Late Stone Age community
  • The infamous maneless lions still inhabit the area—descendants of those known as the Tsavo Man-Eaters
  • Rock-climbing mecca with views of Kilimanjaro
  • Mzima Springs attract hordes of hippos, crocodiles, and vervet monkeys
  • Home to the Big 5 and numerous other wildlife species

Best time to go Tsavo National Park

Frequently asked questions.

We've taken the liberty to answer everything you may need to know about visiting Tsavo National Park

Kenya, like the rest of Africa, is a year-round destination. But some months are better suited for game viewing and the famous Great Migration while others are ideal for scenery, birdlife and beach-and-bush combinations. It all comes down to your own interests and preferences. Let’s have a look at the seasonal highlights. August – October

This is the best time to visit Kenya for wildlife safaris and to experience the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Maasai Mara. The migration is triggered by rainfall patterns and new grass growth. These dry, wintry months are also best for general game viewing. So with or without witnessing the Great Migration, your East African safari experience will be amazing! December – March

The best time to visit Kenya for beaches, scenery, birdlife and wildlife viewing outside of peak season is from December to March. During these months, game viewing is still excellent and fewer travellers means great deals to be found. Days are hot, mostly clear and not too humid along Kenya’s tropical coastline. April – May

So when is it not the best time to visit Kenya? The so-called long rains drench Kenya in April and May with a wet monsoon that renders the coastline a muggy haze and the hinterland a boggy though seriously picturesque quagmire. The perfect time to visit Kenya if you want the place to yourself. Contact our Travel Experts before deciding when to travel to Kenya.

East Africa is famous for its wildlife-rich plains, classic African landscapes and the Great Wildebeest Migration, which must top every best-of Kenya list:

- Experience the Great Migration, as millions of wildebeest, zebra, topi, Thomson's gazelles and other plains game drift back and forth with seasonal water and food sources.

- The “Samburu Special 5” consisting of unique species found nowhere else: Grevy's zebra, Somali ostrich, gerenuk, beisa oryx and reticulated giraffe.

- Massive unfenced national parks, where large herds of animals move freely along their ancient migration paths.

- The successful cohabitation of people and wildlife in conservancies surrounding national parks.

- The people of Kenya like the colourful and striking Maasai and Samburu with their traditional African lifestyles.

In addition to incredible wildlife, there are many fascinating places to visit in Kenya including World Heritage Sites such as Lamu Old Town on Lamu Island, 13th century ruins of Arab port cities, Mount Kenya and the magnificent Swahili coastline.

Best of both worlds bush-and-beach combinations with easy access to the coastline and tropical islands like Lamu, Zanzibar Archipelago, and Seychelles.

Kenya safari holidays are family-friendly thanks to closed vehicles for example. Many lodges offer triple rooms, family units and children-only safari activities.

Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, is one of East Africa’s largest commercial hubs with international arrivals from many parts of the world.

Stay a couple of nights soaking up Nairobi’s city culture or just a single night to enjoy a proper bed after the long flight over. You also have the choice, depending on the time your international flight arrives, to skip out on the city and head straight to what you came for – a classic East Africa safari.

While carriers seem to chop and change their routes to Africa on a whim, you can currently get to Kenya from these great cities:

- Abu Dhabi with Etihad Airways

- Amsterdam with KLM or Kenya Airways

- Bangkok with Kenya Airways

- Doha with Qatar Airways

- Dubai with Emirates or Kenya Airways

- Frankfurt with Lufthansa

- Istanbul with Turkish Airways

- London with British Airways or Kenya Airways

- Mumbai with Kenya Airways

- New York with Kenya Airways

- Paris with Air France or Kenya Airways

- Zurich with Swiss Air

Having arrived in Nairobi after your long-haul flight, you can enjoy your Kenya wildlife safari by road, by air or a combination of both. Time, cost and convenience will influence your decision.

Flying around Kenya

Domestic air travel is by far the most comfortable, convenient and time-efficient mode of transport on your Kenya safari holidays or your classic bush and beach adventure. Aircrafts are usually of the smaller Cessna type and they’re served by Nairobi’s domestic airport 90 minutes’ drive from the international airport (an important consideration if you want to connect on the same day). A fly-in safari is obviously a spectacular way to see Kenya’s attractions, removes a large chunk of travelling time and side-steps the discomforts of a long, bumpy drive.

Driving around Kenya

East Africa has a bit of a reputation for poor driving conditions, but for many travellers, this adds authenticity to their Kenya safari holidays. Driving is also a more affordable option. Travelling by road, you can hire your own 4x4 for a private self-drive safari or book a road transfer.

A self-drive safari in Kenya rewards the intrepid visitor with the bragging rights to a unique, off-piste African experience that reduces your transport cost, but can increase your hassle cost with long distances, rough roads, corrupt cops and inadequate roadside facilities. A scheduled departure removes the hassle factor, cuts costs and still gives you a unique, authentic African experience. Combining a fly-in where necessary with a self-drive safari or scheduled road transfer gives you the best of both worlds without breaking the bank.

The cost for a Kenya safari ranges from $200 to $3,000 per person per day. Chat to one of our Travel Experts to ensure the best Kenya safari experience according to your time and budget. Here are a few examples of what influences your final Kenya safari cost:

- Time of year with great differences between low and high season prices.

- Your choice of safari lodges and camps.

- Duration of your stay, with great specials for extended bookings

- Where you go, with the cost going up proportionally to the remoteness of your destination and your choice of transportation – e.g. fly-in vs. overland safari vehicle.

- Your choice of safari activities ranging from inclusive wildlife activities to exclusive hot air balloon rides.

Yes. We recommend anti-malarial medication no matter what time of year you plan to visit Kenya. Consult your health practitioner for advice on the right choice of prophylaxis for your body well in advance of your departure date. And if you live in a yellow fever region or plan to travel through a region where it is endemic during your stay, you will need a vaccination and certificate.

Kenya has a rich and fascinating history that dates back to 6 million BC, with the earliest known Orrorin tugenensis (one of the oldest early humans) who lived in the Tugen Hills. Today this area of Kenya is protected and preserved, and you can explore humans’ ancient history at the National Museum of Kenya in Nairobi.

As the years went by, further tool-making Homo erectus and Homo sapiens were recorded, which highlights the deep roots this land has cultivated.

By 1498, the Portuguese, along with Vasco da Gama, arrived in Kenya and took rule over most of the ports including Mombasa. Two hundred years later, Arab influence forced the withdrawal of the Portuguese. Around the 1840s, European missionaries arrived, awestruck at their first sighting of Mounts Kenya and Kilimanjaro (in Tanzania).

By the 1850s, lakes Tanganyika and Victoria were discovered by Burton and Speke, which you can read about their expeditions in the historical novel by William Harrison. After increasing British influence in Kenya, the British Government acquired Kenya and Uganda to become British East Africa by 1895.

Over the following six years, Nairobi was forcibly transformed from a Maasai farming village into the railway headquarters between Mombasa and Uganda, which reached Kisumu on the edge of Lake Victoria in 1901 to open up trading between these flourishing lands. By 1920, Kenya was officially declared a British colony.

Following many attempts to further colonise Kenya, its people fought back. From 1942, members from numerous local tribes united to fight for freedom from British rule. Ten years later, Jomo Kenyatta, 61 at the time, was actively directing this movement of independence and was subsequently imprisoned along with 82 other nationalists.

The rebellion continued and in 1963, Kenya gained its independence with Jomo Kenyatta was elected as Prime Minister. Since its independence, Kenya has been paving the way for its people and, although a journey filled with its own dark history, the country continues to fight and stand together to flourish and grow for the future of its country. Today, tourism is a big part of Kenya’s growing economy and success.

Tsavo National Park Safari

At nearly 22,000km2, Tsavo is the largest national park in Kenya and one of the largest in the world.

Tsavo is made up of two separate parks, Tsavo East National Park and Tsavo West National Park. Located 263 kilometers from Nairobi, a Tsavo safari is often part of a Mombasa itinerary.

Due to its size the park was split into two – Tsavo West and Tsavo East – for easier administration. Tsavo is the ideal destination for people who seek solitude and privacy as well as the chance to explore the wilderness.

Tsavo Safari

With its proximity to Mombasa (less than 100 km away) a Tsavo Safari is a great option for those staying on the Kenyan coast or those planning to relax on Kenya’s beaches after a dusty safari. Tsavo also combines well with the nearby Amboseli National Park .

The Tsavo West National Park is covered in volcanic cones, rocky outcrops and lava flows. The northern part of Tsavo West is the most developed in terms of lodges and infrastructure and has spectacular scenery with a rolling volcanic landscape carpeted in long grass and dense bush.

Tall vegetation makes game spotting here a little trickier than in some of the other parks. The Big Five can be found in the park along with a fine range of antelope species. The main attractions of the park are the two waterholes, built by the lodges to more or less guarantee that their guests will be treated to fabulous game viewing.

Places to visit include the Chaimu Crater and the Roaring Rocks viewpoint. These are located just southeast of Kilaguni Safari Lodge; they can be climbed in roughly 15 minutes and offer sensational views over the plains.

Accommodation Tsavo West

Finch Hattons is located in Tsavo West National Park, between Mount Kilimanjaro to the west and the Chyulu Hills to the northeast. The camp is open all year round and is named after Denys Finch Hatton, one of the early British explorers, conservationists and safari pioneers.

Across the highway from Tsavo West is Tsavo East. Famous for its large numbers of elephant, spectacular herds of up to 1000 buffalo and man-eating lions. Tsavo East has more open savannah than its western sibling.

Accommodation Tsavo East

There are numerous camps and safari lodges in Tsavo East and one of our favorite is Galdessa Camp .

The camp is placed along the banks of the Galana River amidst doum palm trees and indigenous flora. Natural elements, such as stone, branches and raw, reclaimed trees, bring the incredible beauty of the wilderness indoors. Also the camp isn’t enclosed by a fence, wildlife roams freely, giving you a front row seat to spectacular game viewing without leaving the property.

There are also a variety of other animals such as antelop, giraffe and zebra.

The scrub-covered hills of the southern park have a very remote feel and the park, despite its great game, does not attract large numbers of tourists. The best game viewing is along the watercourses and at the Kanderi swamp, which is not far from the main Voi gate. Thirty kilometres from the gate is the Aruba Dam and lion are commonly spotted around here.

For a number of years only the southern third of the park was open to the public because of the danger posed by poachers, and visitors were likely to encounter carcasses of tuskless elephants. In the past the park was hard hit by poachers who slaughtered horrifying numbers of rhino, elephant and other species.

Long at the epicentre of a poaching war which decimated rhino numbers from approximately 8000 in 1970 to less than 50 two decades later, elephant numbers plummeted from 50,000 in the 1960s to 5,000 twenty years later.

Today, however, the corner has well and truly been turned and you can be treated to the sight of large herds of 50 or more elephants, which have instinctively retreated to the vicinity of the lodges where they are assured of protection.

Places of interest

There are some interesting geographical features in Tsavo, including the Lugard Falls (this is actually a misnomer as the ‘falls’ are in fact a series of rapids on the Galana River), and the Mzima Springs (the source of much of the fresh water in Mombasa ).

At Mzima you can walk down to a large pool, a favourite hang out for hippos and crocodiles. There is an underwater viewing chamber where you can observe thousands of primordial looking fish.

In the rivers crocodiles and hippos lurk, while 600 bird species – many of which are waterfowls, decorate the trees, grasslands and sky above.

Birding Safaris

For bird watchers Tsavo is a perfect birding safari destination.

The best time for birding safaris is during the rainy season when the birds are nesting and breeding. Bird species found here include Eastern chanting goshawk, vulturine Guinea fowl, black-headed lapwing, Red-winged lark, Rosy-patched bush shrike, Red-bellied parrot, Martial eagle, Golden pipit, Somali bee-eater, Somali ostrich, Taita falcon, Taita fiscal, rufous chatterer, Somali Bunting, Nightjar to maention but a few.

Tsavo East national park hosts almost half of the bird species found in Kenya. The park hosts rare and migratory birds that come only for breeding.

Tsavo National Parks

Safari experiences that you will not find with any other travel company. We know Africa best and will get you to the right place & time to enjoy the greatest shows on Earth!

Tsavo East National Park and Tsavo West National Park account for the largest of Kenya’s protected spaces - more than 20,000km² (2,000,000 hectares) of wild, remote land.

Named for the Tsavo River that runs through both parks, this enormous landscape has one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in Kenya. Habitats range from the red semi-desert and grassland savannas of the East to the rainforests of the Chyulu Hills, and inselbergs and sheer cliff faces of the West. Tsavo West is busier and more developed than Tsavo East.

We live here, in Africa, and have been doing this since 1991. Travel in Africa is about knowing when and where to go, and with whom. A few weeks too early / late or a few kilometers off course and you could miss the greatest show on Earth. And wouldn’t that be a pity?

The perfect tailor made Tsavo safari

A sanctuary for a multitude of rare mammals and birds including the largest population of elephants in Kenya

The two national parks of Tsavo are larger than any other in Kenya, with a vast combined expanse of over 20,000 square kilometres. Previously one park, the remote wilderness areas of Tsavo East and Tsavo West are divided by the railway which runs between Nairobi and Mombasa. Historically known as the ‘Lunatic Express’ and famous for the man-eating lions who preyed on the workers during construction in 1898, this railway opened up trade and tourism in the region, and is still in use today. Indeed there's a fun safari by rail that visits Tsavo, perfect for those who don't want to fly.

Kenya’s largest population of elephants are found in Tsavo, and the national parks boast a greater biodiversity than elsewhere in the country. Tsavo West has the most dramatic scenery, with endless plains, rocky peaks, natural springs and swamps. Wildlife viewing here is excellent, with an abundance of plains game, and predators such as lion, leopard and cheetah.

Tsavo East is a real wilderness experience, and being nine times larger than the Masai Mara , it’s the place to come if you want to get away from it all on a luxury Tsavo holiday. You can spend a whole day out on safari here without coming across another vehicle. The landscapes in Tsavo East are flat and arid, which makes spotting wildlife relatively easy. Keep an eye out for the famous red elephants who bathe in the vibrantly-coloured mud, and big cats who are always looking for their next meal.

Discover the real Africa

Tsavo East covers an immense 11,750 square kilometres and yet is home to a few tourism properties which ensures a unique and exclusive experience. The Park is one of the world’s most biodiverse regions: bushy grassland and open plains alternate with semi-arid acacia scrub and woodlands and the Galana River gives rise to lush vegetation.

There is an incredible variety of wildlife and birdlife to be seen in the Park: lion, leopard, cheetah, zebras, giraffes, serval cats, genet cats, antelopes, kongoni, lesser kudu, oryx, klipspringer, impala, striped hyena, gazelles, buffalos and elephants. Some 500 bird species have been recorded in the area, including ostrich and migratory kestrels, while buzzards stop by during their long flight South.

Of course, Tsavo is world-famous for its vast herds of elephants, which often glow red after a dust bath, and Satao’s watering hole can attract up to 1,000 elephants a day. Large prides of lion are also sighted regularly. Satao Camp’s contributions to wildlife habitat is to ensure that our waterhole never dries up.

game drives

Satao Camp offers morning and afternoon game drives within the Park. If you’re looking for the legendary Big Five, you won’t be disappointed.

All our safari vehicles are open 4×4s equipped with everything you need for the perfect game drive. We provide binoculars, guide books about African birds and mammals and even a cool box with chilled drinks at the ready.

Our guides are qualified Professional Safari Guides and have worked for many years in Tsavo. Their passion and understanding of the environment and the rich biodiversity of Tsavo are unequalled and they will be delighted to share their knowledge with you.

Sunset over the Tsavo plains is a sight to behold and the ‘sundowner’ experience is a must for all our guests at Satao. At the end of a leisurely late-afternoon game drive, your driver/guide will take you to “our” special sundowner spot. The fire is lit, delicious bitings are served and the chilled sparkling wine or the famous ‘dawa’ cocktails are poured. Sit back and relax, watch the sun slip behind the Sagala Hills and listen to the sounds of the wild. It’s an experience you will treasure forever.

For aspiring photographers, the hour before the sun goes down is blessed with what the professionals call ‘magic light’ – a time of soft golden light that displays the Kenyan wilderness to optimum advantage.

To book your sundowner experience, please ask the camp manager on arrival.

Satao Camp’s oasis is a favourite habitat for a great variety of birds: over 300 different species have been identified. Birders can safely walk around the Camp’s grounds and watch the many beautiful birds coming to nest or take a bath in the waterhole. Hornbills, barbits, starlings, guinea fowls and pearl spotted owls are very common to see. Our resident flock of colorful guinea fowl are a pleasure to watch.

Nearby attractions

As well as teeming with wildlife, Tsavo East offers visitors some spectacular scenery. Some notable sights include:

The Mudanda Rock is a 1.6 km inselberg of stratified rock that acts as a water catchment that supplies a natural dam below. It offers an excellent vantage point for the hundreds of elephants and other wildlife that come to drink during the dry season.

On the Galana River, Lugard Falls is a series of white water rapids running between some remarkable rock formations. On request, clients can book a full day game drive with a picnic lunch to see both the falls and also Yatta Plateau, the world’s longest lava flow. Its incredible 290 km length was formed by lava from Ol Doinyo Sabuk Mountain.

Safari In Kenya: Everything You Need to Know About Doing A Safari In The Tsavo East National Park

Posted on Last updated: January 18, 2021

Like every twenty-something I grew up watching a bit too much Lion King (or was that just me?), which made going on a safari a long-standing item on my travel bucket list.

I finally fulfilled this  African  dream when I went to Kenya and did a safari in the Tsavo East National Park. This was without a doubt one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

If you’re dreaming of your own magical Kenyan safari, but are looking for help to plan it, you’ve come to the right place!

In this guide I’ve put together everything you need to know about doing a safari in Kenya, specifically in the Tsavo East National Park.

I go over things like what to pack, things you need to know before you go, choosing a park for your safari, where to stay and more.

So what are you waiting for, your safari in Kenya is waiting! Let’s dive in!

  • 1 Things to know before going on a safari in Kenya
  • 2 What to pack for a safari in Kenya
  • 3.1 How to get to the Tsavo East National Park
  • 4 Where to stay during your Kenyan safari
  • 5 Our safari in the Tsavo East National Park

Things to know before going on a safari in Kenya

Even if you’re an experienced traveller, going for a safari in Africa isn’t quite like going on any other trip. There are some things you need to do before you go.

Check if you have all the necessary vaccines – Arguably you should do this before every trip, but for most destinations you will usually be up to date.

Before a trip to Kenya you should pop by your local pharmacy and see what they recommend vaccine-wise.

Visit a pharmacy or doctor to get your anti-malaria treatment you want (if any) – I’m not a doctor and can’t advise you, so make sure to visit a doctor or local pharmacy and ask about the different types of malaria treatment you can get.

Some parts of Kenya aren’t affected by malaria, and some travellers decide to not take malaria tablets to avoid the side effects as they feel the risk to catch it is very low. Personally, I took Malarone for my trip.

Check the weather forecast – Generally speaking, the weather in Kenya is always very hot. However it does occasionally rain, so you will want to check the forecast before your trip and pack accordingly.

What to pack for a safari in Kenya

I listed below some items you definitely don’t want to forget before your safari in Kenya, and some suggestions for safari appropriate clothing.

Mosquito repellent – Unless you want to spend the day swatting mosquitos away, make sure to bring yourself some mosquito repellent!

Sunblock – The African sun is very intense, you don’t want to get sunburnt and ruin your trip.

Loose and long sleeved outfits – These are the best outfits for such hot climates, since it keeps things breezy and in the shade.

Wide-rim hat – Like the above points, you want to protect yourself from the sun.

Sunglasses – Don’t forget them, there’s nothing worst than squinting all day while trying to watch the horizon under the midday sun.

Binoculars – As good as your eyesight can be, it won’t be good enough to spot animals that are very far away. Bring one of these with you to ensure you can see animals that you can’t get closer to.

About the Tsavo East National Park

With its 13,000+ kilometres squared, the Tsavo East National Park is one of the largest and oldest parks in Kenya. Access to the park costs 65 USD for adults and 30 USD for children.

There are three entry gates to the park and once inside you can only drive on the set paths. Bush driving isn’t allowed so as to not disturb the wildlife.

In the Tsavo you can see a wide variety of wildlife, from the “ Big Five ” to smaller mammals and many African birds . Its rich biodiversity is what makes it such a popular destination for safaris.

How to get to the Tsavo East National Park

We were staying in Malindi before heading to the Tsavo East National Park. From Malindi it is approximately a 4-hour car drive depending on the road conditions.

The road is paved for a short section beyond Malindi, with the rest of it being a dirt road,   which takes considerably longer to drive on.

If you are travelling to the Tsavo from further away (eg. Nairobi) you can fly to one of the small airstrips that are close to the park. You can usually organise these with the camp or lodge that you are staying at.

On our drive back to Malindi after the safari we spotted lots of early morning jeeps that were doing a day trip safari to the Tsavo East National Park from Malindi. While this is doable, I don’t particularly recommend it.

You would end up spending 8 hours in the jeep just to get there and back, plus all the time you will spend in the Tsavo East National Park doing the safari.

Doing a safari is a once in a lifetime experience, you want to be fresh for it!

Also, staying in a lodge or camp in the park (or close to it) is also a unique experience, you don’t want to miss out on it!

Where to stay during your Kenyan safari

I’ve listed below some options of camps in and around the Tsavo East National Park that you can stay at for your safari for every budget.

Budget: Sagala Lodge – If you want to have a safari lodge experience without breaking the bank, Sagala Lodge is a great place to do so.

This affordable camp might be basic compared to some of the more luxurious ones, but it comes with a pool, delicious food, spacious rooms and a great location for an early morning safari. Can’t ask for much more really!

Click here to see prices and availability at Sagala Lodge!

Mid-range: Swara Osteria Camp – We stayed at a camp just outside the park called Swara Osteria Camp and it was an incredible experience. They had an infinity pool with a view, glamping tents and the food they served was delicious.

Click here to book your stay at Swara Osteria Camp!

Luxury: Finch Hattons Luxury Tented Camp – If you’re looking to spoil yourself, this is the place to do so. With private pools, a spa and lovely savannah décor, it’s the perfect place for a luxury safari experience.

Our safari in the Tsavo East National Park

After a long afternoon of driving we arrived at the Swara Osteria Camp in the evening, where we were greeted by Maasai with refreshing drinks and towels.

We were also greeted by the most amazing starry sky, since the power generators don’t kick in till later at night. We got to sit around the pool and the fire and enjoy the star and candle lit atmosphere.

Before having dinner we decided to head out for a night safari, which was incredible. Driving around the savannah under the stars, surrounded by all the sounds of animals getting ready for the night was magical.

We didn’t see big cats, which we were hoping to see as they usually come out to hunt at night, but we did see a group of elephants with their babies. We also saw a rabbit, who ran away as soon as we approached.

Can’t lie when I say it was pretty unexpected.

Early morning light at Swara Osteria Camp, just before setting off for our safari!

Early morning light at Swara Osteria Camp, just before setting off for our safari!

The morning after we woke up at 5am, and had an awesome breakfast while watching the sunrise over the river in front of our camp.

We set off nice and early, so that we could have a full day searching for animals and watch the sunrise over the savannah.

I had a very Lion King moment when the big red sun rose in all its beauty. My safari companions didn’t appreciate my singing moment as much.

Sunrise over the Savannah in Kenya

Sunrise over the Savannah in Kenya

We had an adventure packed day, featuring mostly a lot of driving, interrupted very often by a yell of “I see something!” or “Look there ahead!”, which was usually an animal, but sometimes just turned out to be a funny shaped rock.

Seeing our first elephant in daylight was quite the encounter. Especially because our first elephant encounter was a mother with her cub!

After that we saw lots of elephants, playing in muddy rivers or simply walking around. One even crossed the road right in front of us and almost charged at our land rover!

At one point we got to a traffic jam in the road, definitely not what I was expecting in the middle of the savannah!

A group of giraffes that we spotted during our safari

A group of giraffes that we spotted during our safari

There were three or four cars parked on the side of the road. We were wondering what they were doing when our guide explained they had spotted lions.

I got super excited about this. The lions were resting in the shade under some bushes, but we saw them move around and walk from one to the other. I can happily say I saw Simba. Although I still need to find Pride Rock.

After that we saw an abundance of zebras, antelopes, monkeys and giraffes. Driving along the river our guide told us to keep an eye out for hippos. However this is really hard for those with an untrained eye.

We stopped a few times with the driver pointing out at what looked like shallow rocks, but when you look at it long enough realise it’s moving and it’s a hippo!

A lone tree in the beautiful savannah landscape

A lone tree in the beautiful savannah landscape

We got to get out of the car at a “Hippo Point”, where you could walk down to the river to get a closer look at the hippos. I was a bit scared since hippos seem placid, but they’re actually very dangerous!

On return from the safari we went on a sunset walk along the river, accompanied by the Maasai from our camp. When compared to driving, walking in the savannah was an even more magical experience.

Especially a since we were accompanied by expert Maasai, who were pointing out all the traces of animals and told us stories of the area.

If you want to find out more about the Maasai check out this article about life in a Kenyan Maasai village . We then closed the day with a lovely dinner under the stars.

Final thoughts on doing a safari in Kenya

Have you ever been on a safari? How did you find it? Let me know in the comments below!

For me it was a dream come true. Doing a safari had been at the top of my travel bucket list for years, and finally going to Kenya for a safari was simply magical. We had an incredible experience thanks to Swara Osteria Camp.

I wanted this post to be informative, sharing with you useful safari information like what to pack and where to stay, but I also tried to make it more personal than the average travel guide.

Doing a safari left me simply awestruck, and I wanted to convey those feelings to you by sharing my experience. I hope you find this guide useful in planning your own safari to the Tsavo East National Park, Kenya!

Tsavo National Park Kenya safari

Tsavo National Park Kenya safari:  Tsavo East National park and Tsavo West national park are the two national parks that jointly form Tsavo national park. The combined two national parks cover almost 4% of Kenya total size. Its one of the largest national parks not only in Africa but entire world. This is the true wilderness with much undiscovered game viewing destination. The park is dominated by the dry rugged rolling hills covered with scrubs. Its remotely located in the semi-arid area of Taru desert. Tsavo national park Kenya safari takes you inside one of the best African juggle. It is a home of the African wildlife especially the African big five (lions, leopards, Elephants, Rhinos and Buffaloes) The wildlife densities are very large and spotting the animals is much easier and possible any time of the year when doing game drives. The park does not have foliage that could interfere with the game viewing during your Tsavo national park Kenya safari.

Tsavo national park Kenya safari through the contiguous stretch of land that is splinted in to two. The Tsavo national park Kenya safari can be done on both sides if you have enough safari time or can be done on only one side. The guest has to pay separate Park entry fees to access both. Each Tsavo national park side has its own gates where guests clear the park entry fees from before entering to the park.

The park’s famousness is based on the large herds of African red dusted Elephants. The red Elephants which roam freely in their natural habitants are easily seen during your Tsavo national park Kenya safari. They are also viewed along the Galana River where they like sprinkling their young ones with water. The vegetation of the park that is characterised by semi-arid climatic conditions favour animal viewing very well. The short grass that cuts across all the two protected areas make it excellent for the game viewing. The park hosts the animals in large populations. The red Elephants are seen in the groups of over 100 in each family.

The Kenya safari to Tsavo national park is a perfect safari that can combine the beach life and wildlife experience. Its location in the coastal area makes it possible for the guests to kill two birds using one stone. The park is located in the highway from Nairobi to Mombasa. The highway is the one that divided the park to create two national parks those are Tsavo east national park and Tsavo West National park. The park has a wide range of attractions that makes your Tsavo national park Kenya safari a memorable wildlife experience. Your African wildlife safari come true when you get time to visit this national park.  This is the only safari which gives you great opportunity to encounter all the African big five at ease. The park hosts both Black and white Rhinos at the park and nearby community conservancies.

The great topography that is composed of soaring volcanic hills, open rolling short savannah grasslands as well as the savannah plains offers a good vast area for exploration of the park. The park provides thrill active Kenya safari which is life time experience. The park is one of the few tourist destinations where you can enjoy viewing wildlife in unhurried or spoiled area. The combined but different topographic parks offer unique experiences to the guests during their safari to the park.

Tsavo Kenya safari does not leave any stone in the wilderness unturned. The park is much gifted with nature that provides great sightseeing opportunities. The great attractions at the park like the Mzima Springs that produce 50million gallons of clear crystal water is worth a visit during your Tsavo national park Kenya safari. The natural springs under neath in the volcanic rough rocks are unique. The chyulu Hills which is not only the source of the water at the park but a good hiking destination for the guests. The Mzima springs also hosts a lot of hippos and different fish species.

The other unique and a must visit areas during Tsavo national park Kenya safari is the Chaimu Volcanic crater. It hosts a large schools of hippos and other water birds. This is the birders pride easily for the predator birds like Buzzards, eagles and others. The area is explored on foot with great silence through the hiking trails found at the area. You will not miss the animals during your walking at the trails. The walking safaris are done under the guidance and leadership of the park ranger who is armed. You will feel the steps of another planet when you are exploring the park on foot as the park ranger will be on the lead through the scenic geographical phenomena of the park.  You will be introduced to the different flora and funa that is found at the park. During your walking safari in Tsavo, you will encounter the world’s longest lava flow that is Yatta plateau. The plateau was formed from molten rock from Ol Doinyo Sabuk Mountain. You can extend you walk up to the Mudanda Rock which is rugged volcanic outcrop. On the base of these rocks are the water catmint areas that attract wide range of animals. The Red Elephants are always seen at the guard of these water areas. Other animals found are the hippos, crocodiles, Zebras, topis, wildebeests and many more. The walking safaris are good though it needs some good physical fitness in the guests I order to achieve the dreams. The walking safaris are part of Tsavo national park Kenya safari .

Tsavo National Park Kenya safari

Another classic part of Tsavo national park Kenya safari is game viewing. The game drives are done throughout the park. Game viewing is done any time of the year. The twin National Parks of Tsavo East and West together form one of Africa’s largest wilderness reserves. This single National Park is larger than the island of Jamaica. Tsavo as a whole consists of 10 million acres of pure wilderness, incorporating savannah, ranges and hills, acacia and montane forest, and an extensive river system. The vast plains of Tsavo are crossed by the main Nairobi-Mombasa railroad. This historic railway was, in 1899, the scene of one of Africa’s greatest Adventure stories.

Two large lions actively preyed on the railway workers as they built a bridge over the Tsavo river, claiming over 120 victims. They evaded hunters for well over a year, and the legend of the Man-eaters of Tsavo was born. The sheer scale of Tsavo gives the visitor a chance to really get away from it all, and to explore the wild in total solitude.  On safari here you will see large herds of Elephant, their hides often a luminous red with dust, as well as Lion, Buffalo, Eland, Giraffe Impala, Kudu and possibly Rhinoceros.

Tsavo is a birdwatcher’s paradise with numerous species of weavers, hornbills, sunbirds, rollers, and raptors commonly seen. One of Tsavo’s most interesting geographical features is the Lugard Falls, where white water rages through a series of spectacular rock formations.

Also not to be missed is the volcanic Mzima springs. These natural springs produce 50 million gallons of fresh sparkling water daily. These waters are alive with shoals of barbel and Hippopotamus and waterfowl. A unique underwater observatory has been built that gives you an incredible view of this crystal clear underwater world, where massive hippos glide silently through swirling shoals of barbel.

These springs have created a sprawling wetland paradise of giant Raphia palms and oases alive with water birds. Both Tsavo East and West are ideal for those who enjoy solitude and a chance to explore wilderness without encountering other people. Lodges and Camps tend to be remote and accessible by long drives or air transfer. Of the two Parks, Tsavo East is the more remote and less visited. Many of these can organize game walks and other activities.

The relative proximity of Tsavo East to the coast makes it an ideal safari destination for those staying on the coast, or wishing to combine a safari and beach holiday. Many coast based visitors combine a safari to Tsavo with visits to the Shimba Hills and Taita game sanctuaries, Amboseli National Park, or the Chyulu Hills.

The bird life is as varied as the landscape, from the conspicuous flocks of Golden-breasted Starlings around most of the park to the dull, skulking Evergreen Forest Warbler in the Chyulu hills. Tsavo is home to both species of Kenyan Ostrich with the Common Ostrich present in Tsavo West and the Somali Ostrich in Tsavo East. Hartlaub’s Bustard is found in both parts of the NP.

Tsavo lies on one of the main migration routes for northern hemisphere birds. Each year from September to November the Ngulia region becomes the base for a large-scale netting and ringing exercise. This provides important information on the migratory routes and the habits of many common northern species. This position on the migration route makes Tsavo a good hotels to spot some of the rarer migrant falcons, with Eleonora’s Falcon and the Sooty Falcon both being on the bird list for the region (they’re most commonly seen in October and November although they may also be seen from March to May).

Tsavo West, or at least the southern part of the park, is also fairly close to the Taita Hills. The Taitas are home to the Taita Thrush, an endangered species endemic to Kenya, and the Taita White-eye both of which are found only in that part of Kenya. Right down in the South-West corner of Tsavo on the border with Tanzania is Lake Jipe where some of Kenya’s less common water birds, such as the African Water Rail, Purple Swamphen and Lesser Jacana can be seen

The safari begins with a pickup at your beach hotel or resort.  We’ll take the Mombasa – Nairobi Highway, viewing farmlands and Kenya countryside along the way.

The route to Tsavo East is fairly short and upon reaching the park, we’ll stop for refreshments before heading out on our first game drive. You’ll feel the safari excitement as we rumble over the broad grasslands looking for the larger and smaller wildlife like eland, impala, giraffe, and zebra.

After our first taste of this legendary park, we’ll break for lunch and fortify ourselves for more great game viewing during the afternoon. The pace will be relaxed – there will be plenty of time to discover the big game during our 3-day safari.

As we track for the wildlife all about us in this massive park, we’ll also get to witness one of Africa’s blazing sunsets.

Later, we’ll take the short drive to neighboring Tsavo West. But this jaunt will also be a game drive as we cross from park to park looking for the “Big Five” and the lesser wildlife.

At Tsavo West National Park, we’ll make a stop at a unique enclosure – the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary. This 70 sq. km (27 sq. mi) protected area is home to some 80 black rhino and is one of the few places where one can view these massive but shy creatures.

Later, after the delicious fortitude of a safari breakfast, we’ll strike out for Mzima Springs. This unexpected oasis is fed by crystal-clear waters providing a living habitat for aquatic and land creatures. Its lush greenery stands in marked relief from the rugged plains of the park.

We’ll step from our 4 x 4 Jeep and take a nature walk under the raffia-lined shores, looking for hippo, crocodile, colourful fish and birds. Terrestrial wildlife flocks here as well, so be on guard for zebra and giraffe wandering amongst the acacia trees.

About Tsavo national park Kenya: Tsavo national park is situated in the south western Kenya and it is amongst the most visited Kenya safari destinations in Kenya. This Tsavo national park is one of the largest parks in Kenya, however, it was split into 2 for easy management thus coming up with Tsavo East national park and Tsavo west national park. This park is famous for harboring a large population of lions thus the term “ MAN EATERS OF TSAVO ”. Other animals protected in Tsavo national park include a large heard of Elephants, Buffaloes, Aardwolf, Bushbuck, cheetah, Bush babies, Dik dik, Duikers, African wild dogs, Eland, Grant’s gazelle, Bat-eared fox, Masai giraffe, hartebeest, galago, Spotted hyena, mongoose, Gerenuk, Impala, Kudu, jackal, Porcupines, Oryx, Otters, Reedbucks, Black rhinoceros, warthogs, Zebras and many other animals that call Tsavo national park their home.

With this park size, Tsavo national park remains the largest park in Kenya and yet the oldest as it was gazette in 1948 to protect its diverse fauna and flora species.

Tsavo national park obtained its name from River Tsavo that reverses the park from West to East. The park is bordering Chyulu Hills national park as well as Mkomazi Game Reserve all located in Tanzania the bordering country to Kenya in the South.
