Plan a Racing Themed Trip to Charlotte North Carolina

  • InTown Suites

Are you an avid NASCAR fan? Then it’s time to plan a trip to Charlotte, North Carolina! Charlotte is a mecca of all things stock racing related. While you can find NASCAR related attractions that are open year round, we recommended visiting during racing season which runs from February until November. Here are our top picks for a racing themed getaway.

CHARLOTTE MOTOR SPEEDWAY The Charlotte Motor Speedway (Sometimes still called the Lowe’s Motor Speedway) hosts almost 400 racing events per year, including the popular Coca-Cola 600, the Spring All-State Race, the Bank of America 500 as well as other NASCAR Events. Even though the Speedway can hold 140,000 spectators, the events always sell out. Along with the Stock Car track, the Speedway is also home to a Drag Racing track. There’s always a lot going on before the events start, so if you have tickets to a race, plan to arrive early to take it all in.

NASCAR RACING EXPERIENCE A couple of times a month, the average person has the chance to experience what it feels like to be behind the wheels of a race car with the NASCAR Racing Experience ! During these events, you have a chance to either drive solo around the track or leave the driving to an expert and ride in the passenger seat. Either way, you’ll have a new appreciation of NASCAR drivers.

NASCAR HALL OF FAME Relive the history of NASCAR at their Hall of Fame . You can spend hours or even days exploring all of the exhibits. Get a visual history in the High Octane Theater, before wandering through the ever changing exhibits in the Great Hall. Don’t forget to check out the Hall of Honor where the best of the best are inducted.

ROUSH FENWAY RACING Roush has one of the largest racing teams in the sport. On weekdays you can visit the Roush Fenway Racing Museum and view trophies and other memorabilia from the team’s winning racers.

When you need to grab a bit to eat, you can still get into the racing theme at these local restaurants:

Lancaster’s Bar-B-Que & Wings At Lancaster’s, you can enjoy authentic Carolina BBQ pork and delicious and spicy Buffalo wings. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a driver at the restaurant because it’s a local watering hole that’s beloved by many of the drivers. Lancaster’s is located at 9230 Beatties Ford Road, Huntersville.

Big Daddy’s Restaurant & Oyster Bar

In Mooresville, North Carolina, you will find this family-owned restaurant. While the Oyster Bar may sound like a fancy place, you’ll find a kid-friendly eatery filled with lots of comfort food options. The owners are big NASCAR fans – the restaurant is easy to spot as the roof is decorated with multiple racing cars!

Quaker Steak & Lube

This motorsports themed restaurant is located at 7731 Gateway Lane, in Concord, North Carolina, conveniently close to the Charlotte Motor Speedway. NASCAR themed memorabilia covers the walls and ceilings and the menu has racing themed dishes like the “Revved-Up Ribeye” and “Stick Shifters”.

Looking for a place to gear-down after a day at the races? InTown Suites offers eight locations in the Charlotte area and a newly launched UpTown Suites property in Concord where you can pump the brakes and crash comfortably after an action-packed NASCAR day.

Ive been to Charlotte Motor Speedway to actually see race many years ago. Parking is readily available and not free. Facility is used for other events thru out the year. Give yourself plenty of parking time, it gets busy when there is an event. I do remember enjoyin the race, it was a great experience. Bring ear protection it will get really loud. Lots of walking so be prepared. Seating is very hard, so bring something soft for your comfort. This most recent time in Dec 2023, I went to Cirque Du Soleil. Its a yearly tradition for my family. Always a great time in whatever city you choose! The event wasn't on the race track, but they used the field area for parking. Everything was organized, parking attendants are on site. If you have never been to a Cirque show, treat yourself, you wont regret it!

I went to the speedway today for a tiny house festival, which turned out to be quite a letdown. The event was overhyped as if there would be rows of tiny houses along with various vendors and food trucks, but in reality, there were only about five tiny homes and the lines were so long that I only managed to explore one. Waiting half an hour to enter each house was simply absurd. However, the day wasn't a total loss--it was sunny and pleasant, a DJ played some great music, and I spent quality time with a wonderful friend.

I visited the Christmas Lights and the Christmas Village for my birthday yesterday, and it was just as great as last year. I go every year for my birthday but this was my first time going to the village. They had funnel cakes, corn dogs, hot chocolate, turkey legs, etc. There were fire pits and smores and plenty of tables to sit. We had such a great time. The drive in movie that was playing was White Christmas. Overall it was a great time. I can't wait to visit again next year!

Pretty space, lots of parking easy accessibility and I am overall impressed by the experience I have had here. Many food stalls and more than plenty bathrooms!

Son + I came up & took my mom thru the Christmas Lights... we waited until after the holiday because everywhere I read said lines were long. We arrived at 630pm & there was ZERO line. In fact, initially it looked like we were the only ones there haha, but we were a part of approximately 20 cars, which was PERFECT. At first, we were underwhelmed by the lights, there wasn't an overwhelming display, but then I realized... I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREAKING CHARLOTTE SPEEDWAY... so an overwhelming initial display was unnecessary!! Cuz you're driving on the SPEEDWAY!! How many people would LOVE to do that! Nascar fan or not... ME. I'm the one who isn't a huge Nascar diehard and I was THRILLED, so I can't imagine how fan-girl an actual Ricky Bobby fan would be. As we proceeded thru, the display was way more impressive, I especially liked the display on the stands, (which again, it's the freaking Charlotte Speedway and to see the stands themselves was so cool. (From the time you arrive, you turn your radio to a suggested channel, and the music coordinates with the light show). I especially liked how the display continent THRU the " underbelly" of the stands. If you get a chance, stop at the overlook and get out & look/listen. It is a TRIP. Silent, with the light show and cars slaloming thru the display - but you're high up and can't hear the cars. It was pretty cool. I definitely would do it again. It's $30 for the carload, up to 15 people. I LOVED how empty it was being twds the end of the show, but we missed out on some things like the movies they show and food! (We had looked fwd to funnel cake & turkey legs, but I didn't see where the "Village" was - it appeared completely deserted except for the show, so I may have missed it or they didn't do that portion after Jan 1st. Definitely check it out!

This review is specifically for the Speedway Christmas at the motor speedway! It's a late review but if you want to attend next year you'll be Informed. Number one, get there early! It takes about 20/30 minutes to get in. So have enough gas as well lol. The christmas village was only open thursday through Sunday. The s'mores and hot chocolate station is $6 for two comes with a stick in the fire pit. One of my favorite parts of the village. You can never go wrong with the fair food so of course I had to get something to eat Gyro, butterfly fries, and of course the turkey leg! Loved all of them. They had this inside area which is actually pretty warm. They have different vendors, decoration santa, and drink for the drinkers. The inside Is pretty warm so you can get some food and some drinks and really just chill or you have the option of going to your car and watch their Christmas movie on the big screen dope. When I went monday through Wednesday is $30 per car, thursday through sunday is $40 per car. Also thursday through sunday they have a skip line, which is $70 which means can skip the line and get right to it. I'm a regular civilian. So I was in the normal line, but don't let my pocket stop your pockets! More reviews on Tik Tok @SwaleEats

I wish I could give 0 stars for the Christmas Lights show I attended Saturday evening. We arrived around 7 and waited about 45 minutes just to buy the $50 tickets. Once in, we zig-zagged around a huge field in a traffic jam for THREE HOURS with no way out, no food or drink, and people dashing in and out of their cars to use portapotties. This isn't safe and somebody's kid is going to get run over if they haven't already. Apparently people who bought the $75 express ticket still had to wait two hours. There was no warning or indication whatsoever that the wait would be that long or that there was NO WAY OUT. Once you're in, you're committed. If someone has a medical emergency while there, they will probably just die. Nobody can get to you. People were stuck all over the place having run out of gas just waiting to get into the show. There are no event staff anywhere. Once in, the show was just weird. It was summer-themed with stuff like crabs wearing Santa hats and penguins jumping off diving boards. The fact you get to drive on the speedway would be cool if you didn't have to go painfully slow. Oh and you have to tune the radio station to hear the music and the music is weird too--when there wasn't too much static to even hear it. After about 45 minutes of show you get to the Christmas Village, but by the time we got there it was about to close and we were too tired and anxious to even do anything more at the point. Just wanted to leave and never go back. It felt like paying $50 to be tortured. We didn't get home until 2am. Do not attempt to do this show if you have any sort of medical issues, road rage, anxiety or claustrophobia. Or even if you don't. It sucks.

Photo of Sandy D.

Please do not waste your time! You'll be so disappointed! It takes about 3.5-4 hours waiting before you even see the first light! They promote open 6pm-10pm and by the time you get even close to the "village" it's all done and over! We entered the park at 6:30and did not come out until11pm!

Left the house at 6 and around 11pm we're just now exiting these lights. This might have been the most EXCRUCIATING experience that I have ever been through. I see no positives of doing this unless you want to sit in a car WITH NO WAY OUT with someone. This would be a great excuse to trap someone in a car and get to know who them, but no this was not enjoyable AT ALL. I spent an entire work day going through this in a car. Why would I pay money to sit in a car when I'm trying AVOID traffic every day of my life. I am highly traumatized by the length of the experience. I am not awed or amazed at the lights at all. The lights would be cool if this lasted one hour max. The lights are below average, there is nothing out of this world and anyone is much better off snuggling at home in pijamas or doing something worthwhile for a good 8 hours that this ridiculous experience lasts. Traumatizing.

After Thanksgiving Dinner my family line up in several vehicles and head out to see the Christmas Light Show at Charlotte Motor Speedway! We always have a warm holiday fun spirited time! Everyone has their own favorite thing to do like, just staring at the Christmas Beautiful Lights, Watching The Christmas Movie on the Large Projection Screen, Shopping, Eating Funnel Cakes, Large Plate of fresh fried Potato Chips, Drinking Apple Cider/ Hot Cocoa, etc. My new exciting thing to do is to sit around the campfire, roast marshmallows and share Christmas experiences!! I'm going again at least two more times before Christmas!!

Christmas trees and vendors were very festive!

Lowes Motor Speedway

The Speedway was designed and built in 1959 by current chairman O. Bruton Smith. The late Curtis Turner, one of stock car racing’s earliest driving stars, was Smith’s business partner. At the time Smith, a native of Oakboro, N.C., was an automobile dealer and short-track stock car racing promoter at Concord Motor Speedway and the Charlotte Fairgrounds. Turner, a Virginian who amassed his money in the lumber industry, became one of the first drivers on the NASCAR circuit after the sanctioning body debuted in 1949. Together, they built their dream of a 1.5-mile super speedway on the outskirts of The Queen City and, on June 19, 1960, the first World 600 was run at the new facility.

In 1961, like many super speedways of the era, the track fell into Chapter 11 reorganization from which it eventually emerged despite lagging ticket sales. After his departure from the speedway in 1962, Smith pursued other business interests in Texas and Illinois. Working within Ford Motor Company’s dealership program, Smith became quite successful and began purchasing shares of stock in Lowe’s Motor Speedway. By 1975 Smith had again become the majority stockholder in the speedway, regaining control of its day-to-day operations. He hired current president H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler as general manager and the two began to implement plans for needed improvements and expansion. During the ensuing years, Smith and Wheeler demonstrated a commitment to customer satisfaction, building a facility that continuously established new industry standards. Thousands of grandstand seats and luxury suites were built. Food concessions and restroom facilities were added and modernized to increase the comfort of race fans.

Smith Tower, a 135,000-square-foot, seven-story facility connected to the speedway’s grandstands, was erected and opened in 1988. The building houses the speedway’s corporate offices, ticket office, souvenir gift shop, leased office space and The Speedway Club, an exclusive dining and entertainment facility. Under the watchful eye of Smith and direction of Wheeler, in 1984 Lowe’s Motor Speedway became the only sports facility in America to offer year-round living accommodations when it built 40 condominiums high above turn one. Twelve additional condominium units were added in 1991.

Another innovation implemented by Smith and Wheeler was a $1.7 million, 1,200-fixture permanent lighting system developed by MUSCO Lighting of Oskaloosa, Iowa. The revolutionary lighting process uses mirrors to simulate daylight without glare, shadows or obtrusive light poles. The lighting system was installed in 1992, allowing Lowe’s Motor Speedway to be the first modern super speedway to host night auto racing. Ever cognizant of the competitors as well as the spectators, Smith and Wheeler added a new $1 million, 20,000-square-foot NEXTEL Cup garage area in 1994.

Other additions and improvements include the development of the speedway’s 2,000-plus acres. In addition to the speedway, the property, some of which is leased, includes an industrial park that serves as home to several motorsports-related businesses, a modern landfill facility operated by BFI and a natural wildlife habitat.

In addition to the 1.5-mile quad oval, the Lowe’s Motor Speedway complex includes a 2.25-mile road course and a six-tenths-mile karting layout in the speedway’s infield; a quarter-mile asphalt oval utilizing part of the speedway’s front stretch and pit road; and a one-fifth-mile oval located outside turn three of the super speedway.

Three NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series events, two NASCAR Busch Series races and a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event are among the major events held on the 1.5-mile super speedway. The Richard Petty Driving Experience and the Fast Track High Performance Driving School and the also use the track extensively throughout the year. Other events on the various tracks include a weekly, nationally televised short-track series for Legends Cars, Bandoleros and Thunder Roadsters; World Karting Association regional, national and international races.

In May 2000, a state-of-the-art four-tenths-mile clay oval The Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway—was completed across Highway 29 from the speedway. The stadium-style facility has nearly 15,000 seats and plays host to the Dirt Late Model, Modifieds, Sprint Cars, Monster Truck and more. Corporations such as Lowe’s Home Improvement, Coca-Cola, Miller Brewing, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals and DuPont have rented the speedway to film television commercials or to entertain employees and clients with food, music and race car rides.

Motion pictures such as “Days of Thunder,” “Speedway” and “Stroker Ace” and even music videos like Tracy Lawrence’s “If the Good Die Young” have been filmed at the speedway. Adding to rental dates are race team testing and automobile manufacturer research. Lowe’s Motor Speedway also annually presents two of the nation’s largest car shows and swap meets—the Food Lion AutoFairs in April and September. With track rentals and track events, the speedway is used more than 300 days per year.

Smith and Wheeler will quickly point out they have yet to complete their vision, and they continue to improve and expand the facility. More than 10,000 stadium-style seats, 20 new executive suites and 40 special 32-seat boxes were built in turn four in 1995. In May 1997, the Diamond Tower Terrace grandstand was opened along the backstretch to accommodate an additional 26,000 race fans for The Winston and Coca-Cola 600. In May 1998, an 11,000-seat expansion of the new Diamond Tower Terrace was completed, bringing the total seating capacity of Lowe’s Motor Speedway to approximately 147,000. Then in May 1999, more than 10,000 new seats were completed in the Fourth Turn Terrace grandstand. A 10,860-seat expansion of the Ford grandstand on the frontstretch was completed in May 2000, bringing the speedway’s total seating capacity to 167,000.

Most recently the track added a new garage area for the NASCAR Busch Series, a new state-of-the-art media facility and additional restrooms and showers for use by those enjoying the action from the speedway’s infield. These additions are all part of a long-term project calling for additional grandstand seating, infrastructure improvements, spectator amenities and the development of adjacent land for possible commercial real estate ventures. Building on the basic philosophy of keeping spectator and competitor comfort a high priority, the speedway continues to be a leading promoter and marketer of motorsports activities in the United States.

Although it was built over four decades ago, Lowe's Motor Speedway at Charlotte is still known by many as the "Mecca of Motorsports." The largest sports facility in the Southeast, Lowe's Motor Speedway has 167,000 seats, including 121 executive suites, and capacity for nearly 50,000 more spectators in the infield area. One of the busiest facilities in the country, the speedway hosts three NASCAR Winston Cup events each year, including The Winston (NASCAR's all-star race), the Coca-Cola 600 (the fourth largest single-day paid sporting event in the country) and the October running of the UAW-GM Quality 500, which is usually pivotal in the season-long battle for the NASCAR Winston Cup Championship. Other major events include NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division races in May and October, two Food Lion AutoFairs, the GoodGuys Southeastern Rod and Custom Nationals and a nationally-televised series for Legends Cars. Lowe's Motor Speedway at Charlotte was the first superspeedway to host night racing in 1992 and was also the first sports facility in America to offer year-round living accommodations when it released 40 condominiums for sale high above Turn One in 1984. Today the speedway has 52 condominiums and is home to The Speedway Club, which offers dining members a spectacular view of the 1.5-mile oval from a luxurious environment. In February 1999 the speedway became the first motorsports facility to sell its naming rights to Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse. The speedway's Winston Gift Shop offers guided tours of the speedway (including a lap around the high-banked oval) year-round. The 2,000-acre facility serves as a backdrop for numerous TV commercials, motion picture sets, private testing, driving schools and a long list of events that fill more than 280 days of the track calendar yearly. Lowe's Motor Speedway at Charlotte is an active supporter of Speedway Children's Charities. Location: On Concord Parkway South (U.S. Hwy. 29), 12 miles north of Charlotte in Concord, N.C. Accessible by I-85, I-77 and I-40. Near Charlotte/Douglas International Airport. Source: NASCAR.com

Cars to Premiere May 26 at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte

Disney-Pixar's new 3D-animated feature, CARS, will stage its World Premiere on May 26 at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina. Paul Newman, Owen Wilson, Bonnie Hunt, Larry the Cable Guy, NASCAR legends Richard Petty and Darrell Waltrip and others from the film's voice cast will be joined by a host of stars from the racing world and 30,000 guests that are expected to attend the CARS World Premiere, taking place at the same location as that weekend's famous Coca Cola 600 NASCAR race.

The screening of the film represents the first multi-screen digital cinema premiere ever, with Texas Instruments and its DLP Cinema technology serving as Disney's event technology partner in providing the digital cinema projectors. A series of four giant custom-built outdoor movie screens (115-feet wide and 50-feet tall) will be constructed at Lowe's Motor Speedway at Turn #2 of the track. Each screen will have three DLP Cinema 2K digital projectors dedicated to it. A state-of-the-art sound system is also being created and installed for the event. John Lasseter, the film's director and chief creative officer of the newly combined Disney and Pixar animation units, will also be attending along with producer Darla K. Anderson (A BUG'S LIFE, MONSTERS, INC.), and other key players from Pixar Animation Studios and The Walt Disney Studios.

Tickets for the premiere will be made available for purchase by the general public starting today. Proceeds will benefit Speedway Children's Charities, and Assn. of Hole in the Wall Gang Camps. For tickets, call 1-800-455-FANS, visit the Lowe's Motor Speedway box office, or order online at www.lowesmotorspeedway.com .

To cap off the weekend, the #96 DLP HDTV car will be wrapped as the film's lead character Lightning McQueen for the NEXTEL Cup series race in Charlotte the same weekend.

Lasseter said, "We're thrilled to bring the premiere of CARS to Lowe's Motor Speedway and excited to share this film with such a great community of race fans. Humpy Wheeler, the president and general manager of Lowe's Motor Speedway, has become a great friend and helped all of us at Pixar when we were developing the story and characters for the film. In fact, Humpy provides the voice of Tex, a 1975 Cadillac Coupe de Ville. I have loved automobiles and the world of racing for a long time and 'CARS' is a very personal story to me. This premiere event is the perfect way to debut our film to racing and movie enthusiasts."

Dick Cook, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, added, "Pixar has captured the feel and excitement of the racing world in their latest film, CARS, and we felt that it would be great fun to stage the premiere in a setting that would do justice to the film. John Lasseter has done an amazing job bringing the world of cars and racing to the big screen, and combining it with that magic Pixar story sensibility that appeals to absolutely everyone. With the proceeds of this benefit going to two fantastic children's charities, we hope to launch the film in grand style and help some worthy institutions at the same time."

Wheeler said, "It's a great honor to be working with Disney, John Lasseter, and his colleagues at Pixar in hosting the World Premiere of CARS. This is a fantastic film that celebrates everything that we love about cars, and it also gives us a unique view of the world of competitive racing..."

Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson), a hotshot rookie race car driven to succeed, discovers that life is about the journey, not the finish line, when he finds himself unexpectedly detoured in the sleepy Route 66 town of Radiator Springs. On route across the country to the big Piston Cup Championship in California to compete against two seasoned pros, McQueen gets to know the town's offbeat characters -- including Doc Hudson (a 1951 Hudson Hornet with a mysterious past, voiced by Paul Newman), Sally (a snazzy 2002 Porsche voiced by Bonnie Hunt) and Mater (a rusty but trusty tow truck voiced by Larry The Cable Guy), who help him realize that there are more important things than trophies, fame and sponsorship.

The all-star vocal cast also includes freewheeling performances by Tony Shalhoub, Michael Keaton, Cheech Marin, George Carlin, Katherine Helmond and John Ratzenberger. Delivering more authenticity to the cast are vocal performances from the racing world, including Richard Petty, plus "drive-on" roles by Mario Andretti, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Darrell Waltrip (who holds the record for five-wins at the NASCAR Coca Cola 600) and Michael Schumacher, the ace German Formula 1 racing legend, who is a seven-times world champion, and is widely considered to be the best Grand Prix racing driver of all-time.

Pixar Animation Studios ( www.pixar.com ) combines creative and technical artistry to create original stories in the medium of computer animation. Pixar has created six of the most successful and beloved animated films of all time: TOY STORY, A BUG'S LIFE, TOY STORY 2, MONSTERS, INC., FINDING NEMO and THE INCREDIBLES. Pixar has won 20 Academy Awards and its six films have grossed more than $3.2 billion at the worldwide box office to date. The Northern California studio's next two film releases are CARS (June 9) and RATATOUILLE (summer 2007).

Where is Charlotte Motor Speedway Landfill located?

Charlotte Motor Speedway Landfill is located at 5105 Morehead Road, Concord, NC 28027.

What is the phone number for Charlotte Motor Speedway Landfill?

Please call us at (704) 262-6000 .

When is the landfill open for business?

Charlotte Motor Speedway Landfill is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Saturday from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m.. We are closed on Sundays.

Can I take a tour of the landfill?

We do offer landfill tours at scheduled times throughout the year. Please sign up for our email list at [email protected] to receive the latest information about the landfill.

How big is the landfill?

The landfill property encompasses 700 acres. More than half of that – 393 acres – is set aside for buffer and wildlife habitat.

Why do we need a landfill?

A landfill provides an environmentally safe and secure location to dispose of solid waste that humans produce. By keeping these materials contained in a highly engineered, properly managed landfill, we are doing our part to protect the environment and the community.

Is the landfill really important to our community?

Charlotte Motor Speedway is an integral part of the local economy and infrastructure. It provides jobs for local residents and affordable, responsible waste disposal options for residents and businesses.

How much waste is disposed of at the landfill?

The facility accepts about 4,700 tons of waste daily.

What types of wastes are accepted at the landfill?

Charlotte Motor Speedway Landfill accepts municipal solid waste, commercial waste, construction & demolition and non-hazardous industrial waste. We cannot accept tires, batteries or hazardous wastes.

Who permits and inspects the facility?

We work closely with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality to ensure we are meeting all federal, state and local landfill regulations.

How do you control odors?

Landfill gas and the potential for off-site odors are controlled with good operational programs such as waste compaction, applying daily cover per our permit, and the use of an effective landfill gas collection and control system. Landfill personnel conduct routine odor inspections to minimize and address any potential for odor as quickly as possible. Additionally, we use a misting/odor-neutralization system to assist with odor control. Any odor reports can be made directly to the landfill by visiting our online odor reporting portal .

What will happen when Charlotte Motor Speedway stops being used as a landfill?

Once the Landfill is filled to capacity, a final landfill capping system will be installed that consists of a Geomembrane welded to the bottom liner geomembrane, an engineered soil liner, cover soils, and a vegetation layer. At that time the site could be used as an open green space, parks, wildlife viewing area, or nature trails. The site will also be maintained for an additional 30 years in post-closure care after the final closure. This care includes continued groundwater monitoring, leachate management, and compliance reporting until such time the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality approves the site for final closure.

How long does something take to breakdown in a landfill?

Organic waste can decompose within months, while non-organic waste such as plastics and glass can take 450-1,000 years to fully decompose.
