Capabilities [ ]

Prototype version [ ].

  • Dimensional Travel : The Multiversal Gizmo is capable of sending its user through alternate dimensions and realities at will without the danger of suffering a glitch effect. That ability can help the user's cells to adapt to the environment. Making the user in question undergo a change that allows them to adapt to the same rules, as well as the style of the universe where the user currently resides.

Upgraded Version [ ]

  • Inter-Dimensional Communication : The Upgraded Multiversal Gizmo is capable of making the user communicate with another user who is using the Gizmo regardless of the distance, whether they are in the same universe or not. The Spider-Society are able to use the Multiversal Gizmo to communicate with other Spider-Society's members through a holographic screen or a hologram of the person to whom they are speaking to.
  • Materialization : The Upgraded Multiversal Gizmo is able to materialize and dematerialize at will, being very practical for users when they are not using it to prevent it from getting lost.
  • Anomaly Detection : The Upgraded Multiversal Gizmo have a little bots that can inform the user of what Anomalies happened in the place. The user can also "rewind" time, with the information he got to know what was happening in the scene of a crime.
  • GPS Tracking System : The Upgraded Multiversal Gizmo have a GPS tracking system via a holographic display, this feature also allowed Miguel O'Hara to track the whereabouts of the members of the Spider-Society at all times. This mode seems to be secret for most of its members since Peter Parker wasn't aware they were tracking him through the use of his gizmo.
  • Fall Safe Mode : The Upgraded Multiversal Gizmo also contained a sort of lock which is activated whenever one of the Spider-Society members resigns or is betted by Miguel O'Hara . In this mode, the device deprives former members of the Multiversal Gizmo's capabilities, becoming obsolete, no longer being able to travel to other universes or call other members, acting as a useless watch. If the user still tried to used it, a holographic screen with the word " Access Denied " in capital letters would be displayed.
  • Spider Bots : To be added

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse puts a lot of focus on Spider-Man 2099 who is positioned as one of the antagonists in the film. While Miguel O'Hara might believe he's doing the right thing, he is standing in direct opposition to Miles Morales. To maintain his dominance, Miguel relies on plenty of futuristic gadgets.

RELATED: Everything To Know About Spider-Man: Best Marvel Comics, Powers, Villains, Relationships

The gadgets that Spider-Man 2099 is equipped with are useful in battle or integral to navigating the Spider-Verse. The character has even shared his resources with the other Spider-People. He has built a base in Nueva York, which is well-equipped with all the gizmos he could possibly need to maintain the canon.

9 Base Controls

Since it was Miguel O'Hara who created the base that the Spider-army have begun to work from, it makes complete sense that he has control over the building. Spider-Man 2099 has a gadget that gives him complete access to the systems throughout the base, from door control to platform movement.

Indeed, Miguel O'Hara seems to enjoy using this gadget to add some atmosphere and mystery to his presence. Upon his first meeting with Miles Morales for example he descends from high above on a slow-moving platform. This was clearly designed to intimidate Spider-Man. Overall, base control is useful, but it still wasn't enough to stop Morales from escaping.

8 Communicator

Spider-Man 2099 went from ally to enemy for Miles Morales , and he needed to communicate with his team as he attempted to apprehend the web-slinger. Miguel O'Hara has built a useful telecom system, that appears to be attached to the watches every Spider-Person wears.

Miguel's communication gadgets include speakers and mics, a recording device, and even a hologram. Miguel's system also appears to work anywhere in the multiverse. When there are so many Spider-Men and Women to oversee, this is a vital gadget. Albeit one that can't be weaponized.

7 Multiverse Wristband

Miguel O'Hara has spent a lot of time getting to know the Spider-Verse. One of the gadgets he created was a visitor's wristband that could be worn by those he didn't trust with a proper Multiverse Watch. The band is simple in its design and prevents its wearer from glitching when traveling to a new reality.

RELATED: Spider-Man 2099's Best Costumes From Movies And Comics, Ranked

Miguel O'Hara had already gifted one to Peter Parker's daughter so that she could play in the Spider-Verse base without any issues. He also gave a wristband to Miles Morales to protect him. The ingenious tech could be the key to mass-scale multiverse travel.

6 Digital Webs

There are plenty of things that fans don't know about Spider-Man 2099 and his webs might be one area of mystery for some. While other iterations of the web-head might use synthetic or natural webbing to swing across the city, Miguel has created a brand-new gadget.

Miguel O'Hara actually has digital webs, which he uses to travel with. Their full capabilities are unknown, but they have exhibited some of the same properties as a traditional Spider-Man web. Their red coloring acts almost like a warning sign. Anyone who sees these webs heading straight for them is sure to be filled with terror.

Miguel O'Hara's use of digital technology is incredibly impressive. The character has started to use trapping gadgets to subdue his enemies. While plenty of villains from across the multiverse have been confined in these digital boxes, this tech is also portable.

Spider-Man 2099 suddenly trapped Miles Morales in one of the boxes just as he became a controversial villain of the web-head. Miles couldn't punch through the design, showcasing its strength. However, Miles did manage to escape the trap with the use of his venom blast which demonstrated a notable weakness in the concept.

Miguel O'Hara can't do everything himself, so he has started to use an A.I. system to aid him in all aspects of his work. The Lyrate Lifeform Approximation or Lyla for short, is a hologram-like character who has become a bit of a gadget in her own right.

RELATED: 10 Things That Happen To Every Spider-Man In Actoss The Spider-Verse

Spider-Man 2099 calls on Lyla to research for him, hone in on locations, control the base, and solve problems that Miguel can't begin to crack. Although Lyla is loyal to Miguel and his mission, it does seem as if she is developing a personality of her own and could in theory turn on him. Thus, the A.I. support system might not be so supportive soon.

3 2099 Suit

Miguel O'Hara's 2099 Spider-Man suit seems like the ultimate gadget and is an embodiment of who he is as Spider-Man. From a visual perspective, it's a striking design. The reds and blues pay homage to the traditional Spider-Man uniform. However, the spikes and vicious detailing demonstrate Miguel's no-nonsense attitude.

But Spider-Man 2099's suit is a useful gizmo because of the gimmicks it boasts. The claws and spikes are useful for climbing. The mask boasts a visor system that helps Miguel see his surroundings in more detail. It's also the perfect host for other gadgets, housing his laser webs and his A.I. for example.

2 Go Home Machine

The Go Home Machine is a gadget under Miguel O'Hara's care that has become integral to his operation. It takes the DNA of misplaced multiverse variants and locates exactly what reality they should be sent to. It's been used to transport extraordinary Spider-People like Miles and Gwen , but is mostly designed for removing anomalous villains.

Miguel O'Hara essentially owns a device that can send any person exactly where they need to be, no matter where that place is in the cosmos. It's incredibly impressive and would have solved Peter Parker's problems on Earth-199999. The gadget could be game-changing for organizations like the TVA.

1 Multiverse Watches

Miguel O'Hara has started to use a gadget so much smaller than the Go Home Machine, that is capable of even more incredible things. The Multiverse Watch allows the user to move throughout the Spider-Verse with absolute ease. Although it's a big risk to travel across the multiverse, the watch has seemingly mastered the art.

Spider-Man 2099's watches have built-in comm systems and can stop the effects of interdimensional glitching. They may provide the answers to all the multiverse questions. However, if a watch is damaged or lost, a person could be stranded forever.

  • Across the Spider-Verse is an animated masterpiece that upends Marvel’s Spider-canon

Sony’s Into the Spider-Verse sequel is a bigger, bolder, more ambitious film than its predecessor — and a powerful deconstruction of Marvel’s Spider-Man mythos.

By Charles Pulliam-Moore , a reporter focusing on film, TV, and pop culture. Before The Verge, he wrote about comic books, labor, race, and more at io9 and Gizmodo for almost five years.

A tight shot of a boy hanging upside down and looking forward solemnly. Behind the boy stand an array of masked people.

The concepts of multiverses and people traveling from one reality to another existed long before Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse . But the 2018 animated feature did such a tremendous job of using those ideas to define Miles Morales and deconstruct the very idea of Marvel’s iconic webhead that it almost single-handedly got the whole of Hollywood hell-bent on producing as many genre-bending multiversal epics as it possibly could. Save for Everything Everywhere All at Once , few of these other parallel dimension narratives have really been able to hold a candle to what Sony and Marvel managed to achieve with Into the Spider-Verse — a movie that told one of the most powerful Spider-Man stories of all time.

Similar to the way Into the Spider-Verse never felt like it was explicitly trying to stunt on any of Sony’s previous Spider-Man movies, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse — from co-directors Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson — always feels like it’s thoughtfully drawing upon the stories that came before it in hopes of tapping into some deeper, fundamental truth about what it takes to wear the spider-mask. But rather than simply using Miles to expand upon and celebrate Marvel’s 60-year-old Spider-Man mythos the way Into the Spider-Verse did , Across the Spider-Verse is much more focused on artfully blowing the webhead’s canon so wide open that it’s almost hard to believe as you’re watching it.

Like Into the Spider-Verse , Across the Spider-Verse ’s story revolves around one Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), the one and only Spider-Man operating on Earth-1610 after the untimely (but cosmically fated) death of his reality’s Peter Parker. As an experienced savior of the multiverse, Miles has every reason to think of himself as hot shit and one of the more impressive Spider-People thwipping around in any universe. But as the sole costumed hero working to protect his New York City from its supervillains, Miles can’t help but feel profoundly alone in his day-to-day civilian life, where he’s surrounded by normal people like his mother Rio (Luna Lauren Velez) and father Jefferson (Brian Tyree Henry).

spider verse travel watch

Much as Miles’ parents love their son, Miles knows that they’d never be able to understand how being bitten by a radioactive spider turned his entire world upside down the way Gwen “Gwanda” Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) and Peter B. Parker could. Miles also knows there aren’t many ways to just pop over into someone else’s universe without trouble ensuing. When Gwen appears in a glowing vortex one afternoon with the promise of adventure, though, not only can he not get his super suit on fast enough but he also can’t pick up on the complicated web of secrets she’s hiding.

Though Across the Spider-Verse is undoubtedly a Miles Morales story, one of the more immediately noticeable ways the film differs from Into the Spider-Verse is in the amount of time it spends showing you what the world looks and feels like from other people’s perspectives. To Miles, both his loneliness and newly romantic longings for Gwen are emotions unique to him and his (relatively speaking) sunny, brightly lit universe that’s rendered in an array of warm, highly saturated tones. But Across the Spider-Verse takes care to establish up top how reciprocal those feelings actually are — not just to frame itself as a love story but also to help showcase how differently and imaginatively the common narrative threads shared between Marvel’s various Spider-people can be realized.

Across the Spider-Verse doesn’t just give Gwen more screen time; it commits itself to making you understand why it’s difficult for her to talk about her past and how truly thorny a Spider-hero’s personal and professional relationships with the police can be. Even if it were simply prose, the nuance Across the Spider-Verse digs into Gwen’s character with would make it a tremendous piece of superhero storytelling. What ultimately takes Across the Spider-Verse ’s handling of Gwen and other characters to the next level, though, is the way the movie uses a wide range of character / dimension-specific design languages to explore ideas that are more impactful when depicted visually as opposed to verbalized through dialogue.

spider verse travel watch

As has been the case with all of Marvel’s recent projects touching on the multiverse, Across the Spider-Verse ’s story quickly becomes something of a curious nightmare for its hero as Miles’ reunion with Gwen puts him on the radar of an interdimensional body of Spider-folks known as the Spider Society. Though Across the Spider-Verse also features a very interesting take on the Spot (Jason Schwartzman) as its central villain, it’s really Miguel — a hulking Spider-Man from the future — who brings the most menacing energy to the film as the embodiment of a militaristic order that runs counter to everything that makes Miles who he is.

It’s often discomfiting to see Miguel, Jessica Drew (Issa Rae), and swarms of other Spiders ganging up on and chasing after Miles as Across the Spider-Verse starts to make good on its title. Every single one of the movie’s masterfully produced fight sequences is designed to emphasize how, in a multiverse overfull of Peter Parkers and variations of him, Miles’ differences — his Blackness, his Puerto Rican cultural roots, the fact that he was never a Silver Age comics dweeb — make him so unique that it’s easy for people to question whether he actually belongs. While Into the Spider-Verse touched on something quite similar, Across the Spider-Verse takes a much more pointed, meta approach with its commentary about Miles and, in doing so, encourages you to think very critically but meaningfully about who Miles represents and what it means when people dismiss the very simple fact that he is Spider-Man .

Across the Spider-Verse is a bigger, bolder, and more ambitious project than its predecessor in almost every way — so much so that its entire story doesn’t at all fit into a single movie with an especially satisfying ending. Across the Spider-Verse leaves little question that Sony’s forthcoming follow-up, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse , is going to bring this whole thing home and solidify the studio’s status as being the architect of one of Hollywood’s most successful takes on the multiverse. But Across the Spider-Verse also lands on a cliffhanger so delicious that waiting for the next sequel to drop next year’s going to be absolute hell.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse also stars Karan Soni, Daniel Kaluuya, Greta Lee, Rachel Dratch, Jorma Taccone, Shea Whigham, Andy Samberg, and Amandla Stenberg. The movie hits theaters on June 2nd.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse review — a gorgeous sequel that flies by

Sony's animated spider-man sequel raises the bar for animation and packs rich multiverse storytelling..

Spider-Man in Across the Spider-Verse.

What to Watch Verdict

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a filling visual feast that addresses the density of multiversal storytelling head-on, with minor issues in a third act that's all setup.

Next-level animation

Pacing is a full-out sprint

Loves meta humor but doesn't get lost in its usage

Funny, thrilling and sincere

A less successful cliffhanger ending

Has so much story to tell, which can be overwhelming

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse follows flawless series opener Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse with a fearlessness fit for Miles Morales' glass-shattering leap of faith — albeit a blatant trilogy midpoint.

The movie's animation somehow evolves into an even more visually stunning display of astonishingly individualistic Spider-Verses, making sights worth the price of admission alone. What's less successful is the multiverse storytelling that attempts to focus on both Morales and Gwen Stacy's separate then overlapping journeys, culminating in a third act that doesn't really get going before credits' cliffhanger finish. Although, "less successful" is nowhere near "failure" or even "mediocrity." Its finale issues avoid nearing the egregious franchise soullessness of, say, Fast X .

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a dazzling sequel to what's shaping into a stupendous Spider-Man run of movies, revolutionizing computer-animated filmmaking with each miraculously pixelated millisecond.

Screenwriters Phil Lord, Christopher Miller and David Callaham embrace the daunting weight of multiverse storytelling through Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld). Fifteen-year-old Miles is poorly trying to balance his secret identity as Spider-Man with being a teenager still coming of age. Gwen Stacy, meanwhile, is recruited into a universe-hopping team of Spider-People known as the Spider-Society, led by Miguel O'Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac). They are tasked with fixing anomalies created by the first movie's multiverse rifts. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ultimately sees Miles joins Gwen on her latest mission to defeat a foe covered in interdimensional portals dubbed The Spot (Jason Schwartzman), complete with the deepest meta-storytelling cuts.

The animation under directors Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson is nothing short of revolutionary. The representation of different multiversal animation styles "clashing" at once is remarkably attractive and artistically hypnotic. It goes beyond Looney Tooney Spider-Ham, black and white Spider-Man Noir and anime Peni Parker sharing the screen. Gwen's Earth-65 as a rich tapestry of moody pastel watercolor strokes, a quill-drawn Vulture (Jorma Taccone) from Leonardo da Vinci's Renaissance doodles, and Earth-50101's Mumbai variation on New York City — aka Mumbattan — are distinctively designed to juxtapose with harsh differentiation. That's what makes the blended majesty that spills like runny paint colors mixing on an artist's palette so impressive, highlighting an unlimited amount of stimulating illustration approaches.

There aren't enough compliments to pay lead animator Nick Kondo and his entire creative workforce. Every Spider-Person stands out with meticulous craftsmanship based on style preferences. Vivid colorization puts 4K to shame as pop-art bursts or cell shading cuts razor-sharp outlines, and the calamity of multiverse heroes crammed into single frames never overwhelms.

Anarchistic Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya) feels collaged together by newspaper and magazine clippings alongside traditionally comic-book Spider-Man India (Karan Soni), all detailed with the same jaw-dropping level of ingenuity, whether non-traditional computer animation or hyper-realized figure details. We've reached a milestone moment for animated features, as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse just changed the game with a feast for the eyeballs.

Spider-Man 2099/Miguel O'Hara (Oscar Isaac) in costume running towards the camera

The movie's action sequences zip and dash with exceptional fluidity, made more interesting as not only heroes and villains collide, but their appearances. Vulture's antique notebook paper bombs versus Spider-Man 2099's red laser web beams contrast with emphasis, infinitely extrapolated when Miles flees the Spider-Society's never-ending ranks in futuristic Marvel 2099 land — where the likes of Peter Parkedcar, Spider-Rex and Spider-Cat stampede in pursuit. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse briskly thrills as fight sequences switch from acid-washed to hand-painted to live-action without sinking momentum, stressing a premium on Miles and Gwen's infectious energy. There's no shortage of high-flying, death-defying, pure-adrenaline superhero goodness that you'd expect from a Spider-Man movie where Miles finds himself in constant danger.

Lord, Miller and Callaham get cleverly meta by turning Spider-Man's canon backstory tragedies into Miles' ongoing lesson about wanting to save everyone, and there's proper development going on with Miles' inability to confess his Spider-persona to moms and pops (Luna Lauren Vélez and Brian Tyree Henry). Plus, new additions like the rebellious agent of chaos Spider-Punk and Peter B. Parker's (Jake Johnson) web-slinging toddler "Mayday" Parker are righteous recruits to the cast.

Where Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse falters is in later structure and storytelling ambitions. Without getting too spoilery, the third act ends on a setup reveal more than a rewarding culmination — an unfortunate symptom of franchise filmmaking. Yet in teeing up an ultimate battle to come in the next movie, it betrays the completeness of the film, slamming into a wall instead.

Thankfully, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has far more to offer, from awards-worthy visions of bustling Spider-Verses to a dominant sense of humor full of comic savvy and meme-worthy in-jokes, letting the movie never feel over two hours. It's guilty of exiting stage-left at the height of excitement but also knocks multiple other elements out of the park. With more Spider-People than 20 San Diego Comic-Con cosplay contests and animation that's obscenely accomplished beyond what was thought to be a reasonable ceiling, Miles Morales' adventure into multiverses of madness is a must-see summer blockbuster .

The Big Picture

  • Rhys Ifans makes a surprising return to the Marvel Multiverse in Venom: The Last Dance as a mysterious companion to Eddie Brock.
  • Fans may recognize Ifans as Dr. Kurt Connors from The Amazing Spider-Man , but his role in Venom is likely a new character in a different universe.
  • The movie follows Eddie and Venom as fugitives from the government, facing new enemies and impending symbiote invasion, with comedic elements included.

The first trailer for Venom: The Last Dance is here, and with it comes the reveal of a former Spider-Man star's surprising return to the Marvel Multiverse. In a blink and you'll miss it moment, eagle-eyed fans have spotted Rhys Ifans , the star of The Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man: No Way Home , makes an appearance. The House of the Dragon star appears to be a companion Eddie Brock ( Tom Hardy ) meets while on the run from the government, though details surrounding Ifans' character are still a mystery.

Spider-Man fans will undoubtedly recognize Rhys Ifans as the man who brought Dr. Kurt Connors, AKA The Lizard , to life in The Amazing Spider-Man . There, the once good-hearted geneticist turned himself into a hulking reptilian monster, hellbent on turning New York City's population into lizard monsters like him. His plans were thwarted by his protégé, Peter Parker ( Andrew Garfield ), but the character was one of the numerous villains to return in Spider-Man: No Way Home .

It's unlikely that the character Rhys Ifans is playing in Venom: The Last Dance is Dr. Connors from the prior Spider-Man movies. Not only does the film take place in a totally different universe than both movies, but Ifans isn't the only Marvel veteran who will be playing a different character in the third and supposedly final Venom film. Also in the cast is Chiwetel Ejiofor , who previously played the rogue sorceror Baron Mordo in Doctor Strange and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness .

Eddie and Venom Are on the Run in 'Venom: The Last Dance'

As shown in the above trailer, Eddie Brock and his symbiote companion Venom have become fugitives from the law following the events of Venom: Let There Be Carnage . Their new brand as vigilante fugitives has caught the attention of a black ops operations group, led by two mysterious figures played by Chiwetel Ejiofor and Juno Temple . Their fleeing from the government may be a matter of concern for the Lethal Protector, but that pales in comparison to an impending symbiote invasion that it hurling toward Earth. Despite the world-ending stakes, the trailer for Venom: The Last Dance also includes plenty of comedic moments that the series has become known for, such as Venom dancing with Mrs. Chen ( Peggy Lee ) and a surreal sequence involving a symbiote-possessed horse.

Venom: The Last Dance smashes into theaters on October 25th, 2024 .

Venom: The Last Dance

Eddie Brock and Venom are thrust into a deadly confrontation with a formidable new enemy that threatens the city they call home. As the stakes rise, they must work together to uncover the true nature of this new threat while dealing with the complexities of their unique relationship. The film delves into their dynamic partnership, exploring themes of identity, power, and redemption, culminating in an epic battle that will shape their destinies.

preview for Across the Spider-Verse's Shameik Moore & Hailee Steinfeld respond to ending cliffhanger

The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story , which is set in the world of last year's Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse , is available to watch for free on YouTube right now.

The short premiered at Annecy Festival in June 2023 and follows Miles Morales (voiced in the franchise by Shameik Moore ) as he struggles to balance his responsibilities as Spider-Man.

As he experiences a panic attack after a challenging day, Miles learns that reaching out for help can be just as brave an act as being Spider-Man and protecting his city.

"In navigating those pressures, Miles experiences a panic attack that forces him to confront the manifestations of his anxiety and learn that reaching out for help can be just as brave an act as protecting his city from evil," reads the official synopsis for the film.

The digital release comes in partnership with the Kevin Love Fund, the mental health organisation founded by American professional basketball player Kevin Love.

The film will be incorporated as part of the charity's new mental health-focused lesson plan, The Hero Within .

"My hope for the short film would be for everyone, especially young people, to understand that your feelings are valid and that you are not alone in this," said Love on the film's importance.

"You see it with Spider-Man in the short film, where Miles has a trusted confidante. He is able to take a walk with his dad and express what he's going through. We can all learn from that — how important it is to reach out to someone, express your true emotions, speak your truth and not hold everything inside."

The film's director Jarelle Dampier added: "Miles represents so many of us doing the best we can in our day-to-day lives. We don't often realise all that we've been through until our own body forces us to become aware of its experience.

"My intention is that The Spider Within can motivate deeper conversations amongst friends & family about their own mental health journeys – and I hope it feels like a love letter to those who adore Miles Morales."

The Spider Within was made by Sony's LENS filmmaking team. LENS is an initiative that gives underrepresented groups the chance to tell stories from Sony's animation films.

‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ Writer-Producer Chris Miller Shuts Down Rumors of Generative AI Use

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Chris Miller, cowriter and producer of the animated Spider-Man “Spider-Verse” trilogy, shut down rumors that his team used generative artificial intelligence as part of the production of the next installment of the series, “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.”

“There is no generative AI in ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’ and there never will be. One of the main goals of the films is to create new visual styles that have never been seen in a studio CG film, not steal the generic plagiarized average of other artists’ work,” Miller posted on social media in a shot at what’s commonly being referred to as “AI.”

The social media rumors surrounding GAI come as backlash against the nascent technology has risen among both Hollywood workers and in pop culture. That’s become particularly true following the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes last year, where writers and actors spoke out against algorithms potentially replacing their artistry.

There is no generative AI in Beyond the Spider-Verse and there never will be. One of the main goals of the films is to create new visual styles that have never been seen in a studio CG film, not steal the generic plagiarized average of other artists’ work. https://t.co/t4tSUWCg4u — Christopher Miller (@chrizmillr) June 1, 2024

But generative AI, which creates words and images with minimal human input based on human-created works used to train software, is only one form of the technology. Other machine-learning tools have been adapted by Hollywood animation productions as a method to assist animators, not render them obsolete.

Such machine-learning technology has been used in 2018’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and its 2023 sequel, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” which sought to replicate the hand-drawn style of comic books in a CGI animated film while exploring new ways to express that style through color and design. This included replicating ink lines on characters, which is a key part of comic book line art.

But having to add those ink lines to every single frame of the movie and adjusting them to fit characters as they moved would have been excruciatingly slow and tedious for animators to do on their own, so Sony Pictures Imageworks developed a machine-learning program that would adjust the ink lines from frame to frame and move with the characters. This allowed the animators to focus on the expressions, movements and other key aspects of the lead Spider-Man Miles Morales and other “Spider-Verse” characters without having to spend hours fine-tuning those details.

This machine-learning technology, designed to free animators from a menial task that would have added weeks if not months of work to the animation process, isn’t the same as generative AI. It’s still based around the work done by animators on the project it’s being used for, with their supervision. That’s as opposed to generative AI, which can pull images, video and words from media outside of the project being worked on and create something without substantial direct human input.

The future of machine learning, GAI and other new forms of technology is expected to be a major part of contract negotiations between Hollywood studios and The Animation Guild, which has recently established a task force to hear input from its members about how artificial intelligence is used on projects they have worked on or been pitched.

This will help the union craft its proposals on how to regulate AI use in Hollywood animation. The Animation Guild’s negotiating committee is still in the process of creating a formal pattern of demands and is expected to begin contract negotiations sometime in August.

“Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” is currently in production, but does not have a release date set. It was previously scheduled for release in March 2024, but was taken off of Sony’s schedule last year during the Hollywood writers’ and actors’ strikes.

New movies this week: Watch 'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,' stream 'Shooting Stars'

spider verse travel watch

Do you prefer movie stars who go airborne via webs or take flight for a slam dunk?

This weekend, the much-anticipated animated sequel to Oscar-winning superhero adventure "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" arrives in cinemas with enough Spider-people to populate a basketball league. And if you dig hoops legends as much as comic-book icons, a new biopic about LeBron James ' days as a high school phenom is streaming on Peacock. All that plus Stephen King and Mike Tyson, too.

Here's a guide to new movies that will satisfy every cinematic taste, plus some noteworthy theatrical films making their streaming and on-demand debuts:

If you ever rocked Spidey Underoos: 'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse'

Just like 2018's spectacular original "Into the Spider-Verse," the follow-up is a glorious piece of visual storytelling spinning a new take on a classic hero's mythos. Brooklyn teen Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) got a taste of the multiverse of Spider-people before and now gets the main course, teaming again with friend/crush Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), meeting new folks like the futuristic Miguel O'Hara (Oscar Isaac) and getting thrown into a high-stakes interdimensional adventure that tests the kid's mettle and maturity.

Where to watch: In theaters

'Spider-Verse' review: Most 'Spider-Man' movie ever doesn't disappoint

If you're one of Stephen King's Constant Readers: 'The Boogeyman'

A loose adaptation of a 1970s King short story centers on two sisters ("Yellowjackets" breakout Sophie Thatcher and Vivien Lyra Blair) who, after their recently widowed therapist dad (Chris Messina) sees a disturbed new client (David Dastmalchian) in his home office, are haunted by a nasty shadow monster. While effective with its lighting and offering a few decent jump scares, Rob Savage's mainstream follow-up to his much better indie horror fare ("Host," "Dashcam") is a mélange of scary-movie tropes more ridiculous than actually unnerving.

Review: Stephen King weaves a profound 'Fairy Tale' filled with heart (and, yes, some horror)

If you're interested in seeing LeBron James' origin story: 'Shooting Stars'

Since he's still actively playing, James is some years off from a "This is your life" biopic, but it probably won't be as solid and focused as this coming-of-age drama, which widens the spotlight from the hoops star to his tight-knit group of childhood friends. After playing on the same youth team for years, LeBron (Mookie Cook) and his pals (Caleb McLaughlin, Avery S. Wills Jr. and Khalil Everage) eschew going to their local high school so they can keep the "Fab Four" together at a private academy in a sports flick that charts their path to becoming the No. 1 squad in the country.

Where to watch: Peacock

If you're wondering what Mike Tyson has been up to: 'Medellín'

Imagine "The Hangover" with way more firearms, or the Three Stooges in a "Fast and Furious" movie. When his little brother is captured by the Medellín drug cartel after dressing up as Pablo Escobar in a social-media post, a boxing trainer (Ramzy Bedia) and two of his friends (writer/director Franck Gastambide and Anouar Toubali) kidnap the son of a vicious cartel leader as part of a bonkers rescue mission. The silly French action comedy features a cameo by Tyson as an ex-special forces operative who outfits the inept heroes with heavy weaponry.

Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video

If you want to see Shia LaBeouf as a holy man: 'Padre Pio'

Based on the life of a real-life saint, LaBeouf stars as the title priest who begins a stint at an Italian monastery after the end of World War I. While he struggles with strange visions and his own faith within church walls, soldiers returning home from battle are caught in the turmoil between rich landowners and socialists leading up to the first free election in the country's history. The two storylines don't quite mesh in Abel Ferrara's historical drama though LaBeouf gives a heartfelt performance and the scenes of political unrest are awfully timely.

Where to watch: In theaters and on Apple TV , Vudu , Amazon

Also on streaming:

  • The romantic comedy sequel "Book Club: The Next Chapter," starring Jane Fonda , Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen as best friends on an Italian adventure, is now available to buy/rent on Apple TV , Vudu , Amazon and Google Play .
  • Robert Rodriguez's sci-fi mystery " Hypnotic ," featuring Ben Affleck as a Texas detective searching for his missing daughter and hunting a mind-controlling villain, is available to buy/rent on Apple TV and other on-demand platforms.
  • If you want to catch up on the Indiana Jones films before "The Dial of Destiny," all four previous movies including "Raiders of the Lost Ark" – plus the 1980s TV series "The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones" – are streaming on Disney+ .
