To celebrate the launch of the animated comedy series’ latest season, and the return of ensigns Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, and Rutherford, we’re revisiting our favorite gags, lines and sarcastic Vulcan salutes from the show’s first two seasons. Keep scrolling to read about the 10 times Lower Decks proved it’s one of the galaxy’s funniest shows.

1. Mariner’s “Sarcastic Vulcan Salute”

Sarcastic Vulcan Salute

StarTrek.com

In the Season 1 episode, “Moist Vessel,” Captain Freeman scolds Mariner for being disrespectful. Rather than apologize, Mariner doubles down, and gives what Freeman calls a “sarcastic Vulcan salute” on the way out the door.

We’d like to see Mariner try this stunt in front of T'Lyn, the Vulcan from the Season 2 episode, “wej Duj.”

2. “Computer, End Program”

Computer, End Program

Let’s appreciate that Lower Decks devoted an entire episode, Season 1’s “Cupid’s Errant Arrow,” to Mariner not believing Boimler could have a girlfriend.

The situation was set off by the hilarious moment when Mariner first saw Barbara Brinson run into Boimler’s arms, and cracked, “Computer, end program.”

3. "Move, Jennifer

Move, Jennifer

Mariner’s overaggressive push of an Andorian named Jennifer in “Cupid’s Errant Arrow” is a fan favorite. Jennifer would go on to become a recurring character voiced by Lauren Lapkus.

4. “Please Let Me Shoot Their Warp Core”

“Please Let Me Shoot Their Warp Core”

Shaxs’ “Please, please let me shoot their warp core” plea in the Season 1 episode, “Terminal Provocations,” is arguably the Cerriotos’ chief of security’s most quoted Lower Decks line. And, honestly, curse Starfleet diplomacy, Shaxs had been good the whole month: Just let him shoot the warp core just this one time!

5. “Freaks Fight Back!”

“Freaks Fight Back!”

In the Season 1 episode, “Much Ado About Boimler,” the titular ensign goes from chanting along with would-be mutineers to ratting out everyone. The 180-degree turn is funny – and true to the character: Boimler just isn’t cut out for mutiny.

6. “It’s A Movie, You Can Beam Whatever You Want”

“It’s A Movie, You Can Beam Whatever You Want”

Even though Lower Decks is Star Trek canon, it doesn’t shy away from poking fun at Trek content that has come before it. See: “Crisis Point.”

In the Season 1 episode that pays tribute to the Star Trek films, the U.S.S. Cerritos crashes. When Chief Engineer Billups regains consciousness, he worries his fellow crew members are lost. But it turns out catastrophe was averted because, prior to the accident, Rutherford initiated a rapidly repeating emergency transport sequence, and beamed the rest of the crew to safety. When Billups says what Rutherford did just isn’t possible, the ensign explains that the rules for beaming are, um, a bit fluid in the movies.

7. “Sweet Little Captain Kisses”

“Sweet Little Captain Kisses”

In the Season 1 finale, “No Small Part,” Boimler leaves his communications device on while distributing art supplies to the children of Beta III. The bridge overhears him mock Mariner for receiving “sweet little captain kisses” from Captain Freeman, aka Mariner’s mom.

Suddenly, Freeman beams Boimler and Mariner aboard. The scream Boimler lets out when he realizes what’s happened is one of the funniest cold open moments in the series.

8. “What’d You Do, Stop to Debate the Human Rights of a Robot?”

Stop to Debate the Human Rights of a Robot?

Have you ever noticed that the Star Trek franchise likes to ponder the nature of the universe and other big thoughts? The writers of Lower Decks have, apparently!

In the Season 2 episode, “Kayshon, His Eyes Open,” Mariner joins an away team tasked with categorizing a collection of rare items. The crew members are greeted by a keeper of the collectibles who’s not impressed with their punctuality. “About time, Starfleet,” Chairman Siggi notes sarcastically, “What’d you do, stop to debate the human rights of a robot?”

The fact that this could be a reference to several different Trek episodes makes it one of our favorite meta jokes from Lower Decks .

9. "I Needed The Box”

I Needed The Box

Tendi and Mariner spend the entirety of the Season 2 episode, “We’ll Always Have Tom Paris,” fighting for their lives as they try to track down a feline-centric family heirloom belonging to the Cerritos’ own Dr. T’Ana.

When the scratching post is destroyed, Tendi is distraught. But it turns out T’Ana didn’t care about the heirloom: She just wanted to play in the box it came in!

10. “Armus Prank Call”

“Armus Prank Call”

Star Trek fans first met Armus on Star Trek: The Next Generation . It’s an entity that was created from all that was evil and negative within the Vagrans. For the purposes of Lower Decks , however, Armus is the perfect target for a prank call!

In Season 2’s “The Spy Humongous,” Mariner swipes a submanifold casting stone, and she and her fellow ensigns use its voice-transporting powers to, yup, prank-call Armus. It’s hard to think of anyone in the Star Trek universe that had it coming more than this infamous villain.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Lower Decks #1

Something fans have been joking about for years is officially a part of continuity thanks to Star Trek: Lower Decks . The series' first tie-in issue properly canonizes a humorous onomatopoeia strongly associated with the franchise.

Star Trek: Lower Decks is an animated comedy show set in the Star Trek universe that takes a humorous look at the lives of Starfleet ensigns who rarely get a chance to shine. The series follows a quartet of workers on the 'lower decks' of the USS Cerritos, a ship largely responsible for managing relations with new planets after first contact is made. Star Trek: Lower Decks isn't so much a workplace comedy as it is a loving tribute to the Trek franchise that pokes a bit of fun at some of the most well known Trek staples. From broad jokes to deep cut references, Lower Decks has something for casual and hardcore Trek fans.

Not content to simply joke about the history of the franchise, a tie-in issue to the cartoon series made one well-known meme a part of Star Trek canon. In Star Trek: Lower Decks #1 by Ryan North and Chris Fenoglio, it’s just another average day in space for the members of Starfleet . The bridge crew is handling a dispute between the Catullans and the Satarrans as Ensigns Boimler, Mariner and Tendi relax by engaging in a simulation in the holodeck. However, Mariner isn't too keen on Boimler's choice of a Dixon Hill fantasy and implores her friends to try something with a bit more edge. Mariner switches out Boimler's hard-boiled detective scenario with a program of her own design, which results in several little variations of the Enterprise zapping the team, each one making a little " pew pew " noise.

As the comic’s annotation confirms, this makes ‘pew’ the canonical noise made by Star Trek ships , or at the very least a very specific version of them. For years, fans have used the onomatopoeia to describe the distinct sound of the Enterprise and other various ships lasers. While it's always been a good way of mimicking Star Trek's signature sound effect, it's rarely gotten the opportunity to materialize in such a fun manner.

Onomatopoeias are a storytelling trope that dates back all the way to the Golden Age of Comic Books. Fans may recall the distinct ‘BANG’ and ‘POW’ sound effects were so tied to comic books they even appeared in the 60s Batman television show . Star Trek: Lower Decks #1 is highly aware of the medium it's in and used the longstanding tradition of visual sound effects to incorporate a fan joke. And even though it's only for a couple of holographic ships, there's an absolute delight in making this joke an official part of the Star Trek canon. Sure, Starfleet might not refer to the sound effects themselves, but thanks to Star Trek: Lower Decks , fans can rest easy knowing that "pew, pew" is officially the sound of Starfleet's weaponry, at least in Mariner's simulation.

The Best 'Star Trek: Lower Decks' Jokes, According To The Show's Cast

Lower Decks jokes

Star Trek: Lower Decks has earned scorn from certain corners of the Internet, who refuse to even consider the thought of a comedic Trek show. But I genuinely love the way the series – which focuses on the lower decks crew of an unimportant Starfleet ship, far away from the epic action taking place on the bridge of more esteemed ships – embraces the core of what makes Star Trek great while also having plenty of time for ridiculous jokes.

During a recent press event to promote the upcoming second season, we asked series stars  Tawny Newsome (who voices Beckett Mariner), Jack Quaid (Brad Boimler), Noël Wells (D'Vana Tendi), and Eugene Cordero (Samanthan Rutherford) about their favorite jokes or gags from the 10-episode first season, and their answers did not disappoint.

"Roga Danar?!"

Tawny Newsome:  "My favorite throwaway joke from season 1 is when we're arguing about who Starfleet's biggest badass is, and Boimler says Roga Danar , and in the booth, I literally said, 'Roga Danar?! Get the f*** out of my face!' It was more to [showrunner] Mike McMahan , and they used it and animated that, and I cannot believe that made it in."

"Move, Jennifer!"

Jack Quaid:  "One thing I love that Tawny added was that she just kind of randomly hates this one crew member named Jennifer. Improv'd this whole thing of 'Who is Jen?', and then at one point bumps into Jennifer and says, 'Move, Jennifer!' If it's something that I improvised that I left in, for a while I would just start calling Captain Freeman 'Cap'n Freeman.' Like, Boimler just has this folksy way of greeting the captain. I love it because he wants to be a captain so bad, and he wants to impress the captain, but he literally can't say the word 'captain.'"

"Okie Dokie!"

Eugene Cordero:  "My favorite gag that started happening in season 1 that continues in season 2 is the fact that Star Trek in general has always ended with an 'Aye aye, Captain,' or 'Yes, Captain,' but the fact that Rutherford just says 'okie dokie' so much is my favorite thing. It makes him childlike, it makes it fun, and every time we do it, we laugh in the booth. We're like, 'Can you say that on the job? You can't say okie dokie on the job as a grown-up!' If I ordered something at Starbucks and they said 'okie dokie' to me, I'd be like, I've gotta go. I don't trust whatever's gonna be in this cup."

Noël Wells:  "I liked when we found out that Brad Boimler's real name was 'Bradward.' That made me laugh. I like that it was so late in the show when we found out that was his real name, and then they start leaning in to say it so much. That, to me, feels like the promise of the premise of what an animated Star Trek show is: these inside jokes that perhaps couldn't have taken place on another Star Trek series."

Star Trek: Lower Decks premieres on Paramount+ on August 12 , 2021 .

You've convinced me. I'm really fascinated by this tendency of Star Trek leads, even in Old Trek, to deviate from what should be expected of them. Take TOS Kirk for example.
