Where is hot in March? Our top 14 destinations

By Laura Chubb

Where is hot in March Cuba Malta Caribbean Jaiupur California and South Africa

Spring has sprung once March arrives, but it isn’t all twittering birds and sunshine yet – and not hot enough to tuck away the winter coat. And it’s not just the British who are staying stubbornly crisp, with much of Europe still chilling below the 20°C. Time to retreat to a land far, far away, then, where sapphire seas, lush landscapes and blissed-out beaches are heating up. Depending on how adventurous you’re feeling, you could opt for a heavy hitter in the Caribbean or an off-the-radar archipelago in the Andaman Sea. There are sunny cities , too, and a few far-flung festivities to put a proper spring in your step. Scroll for our pick of where is hot in March, and plan your early spring sunshine escape.

Thailand Krabi province Ko Tub island

Average March temperature: 33°C

From romantic, under-the-radar islands to buzzy, always exciting cities, Thailand is at its most spectacular in the spring. March is towards the end of Thailand’s typical tourist period, so crowds thin out but temperatures hold firm around 30 degrees, and rain showers are few and far between. The east coast islands are particularly idyllic at this time of year – try Koh Samui or Koh Tao for dreamy white-sand beaches and some of the best hotels in the country.

Where to stay: On Koh Samui’s northeast coast, the Four Seasons is the ultimate escape. Think infinity pools spilling down leafy hillsides overlooking the glistening ocean beyond and a spa with treatments inspired by the island.

Barbados beach front

Average March temperature: 29°C

This Caribbean island is one of our all-time favourites, and March is the perfect time to visit before the heat and humidity ramp up for the summer. The island is packed full of charming eateries, beautiful hotels and serene bays with lapping turquoise waters. Plus, the island has plenty of all-inclusive options that offer the best of both worlds.

Where to stay: Fairmont Royal Pavilion is as grand as it sounds. Roll along the palm-tree-lined avenue to arrive at the iconic hotel, where epic terraces look out over twinkling waves and sugary sands and the gardens are like lush green forests waiting to be explored.

Average March temperature : 26°C

Many travellers visit Oman for picturesque mountain scenes and winter sun on spectacular beaches, especially with springtime temperatures ideal for a Vitamin D top-up. However, most visits begin in Muscat, the capital city and cultural hub. Before heading to one of the country’s myriad magical resorts, marvel at the architecture of the Royal Opera House, peruse antiques and spices in Mutrah Souq and explore the Old Harbour in the shadow of the 16th-century Al Jalali Fort.

Where to stay: The best stays in Oman range from uber-luxe desert camps where fires and sparkling barbeques illuminate the landscape to sleek hotels that house indulgent spas. Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort is one of the most unique properties in Oman. Perched 2,000 metres above sea level on the rim of a canyon, adrenaline-inducing adventures include ziplining along rugged cliff faces. Connor Sturges

Marrakech, Morocco

Average March temperature : 23°C

March in Marrakech means toasty temperatures reaching the high twenties, even low thirties, towards the end of the month. Such balmy weather is ideal for enjoying the area’s cultural highlights – come in mid-summer as the mercury tops 45C, and you won’t want to be anywhere besides the pool, frozen cocktail in hand. Leave space in the suitcase and take it to the souks, where pungent oud scents the shaded alleyways and traders sell their wares, vivid piles of powered spices and hand-woven carpets. Alternatively, go intrepid and tackle the Atlas Mountains with an expert guide. Enjoy a long breakfast in the sun before wrapping up – dustings of snow top the tallest peaks into May.

Where to stay: For an authentic Moroccan experience, check into one of the riads nestled into the heart of the bustling medina. The colourful boltholes make for a cosy stay when the springtime temperatures drop a little during the night, and many have rooftop spaces for lounging on during the day. Alternatively, Mandarin Oriental Marrakech is one of the city outskirts’ most opulent offerings. Set among 20 acres of manicured gardens, pool villas are sleek oases pointing toward the Atlas mountain peaks. Connor Sturges

Average March temperature : 19°C

It’s shoulder season in one of Europe’s most reliable winter-holiday spots as Cyprus is calm before Easter, and has a good eight hours of sunshine a day. Temperatures can be mild enough for beach trips, but get out of Paphos and there’s plenty more to quicken the pulse. There are sensational dive spots in and around Larnaca, particularly the MS Zenobia, a ferry that sank on her 1980 maiden voyage, often ranked in the world’s top 10 wreck dives. Travellers can also disappear into the Troodos Mountains in search of its incredible frescoed Byzantine churches, best reached from capital Nicosia, then head to the Limassol foothills for vineyards and micro-wineries, grape terraces spreading prettily across the slopes.

Where to stay: Anassa , a super-solid hotel break perfect for a family holiday, plus home to a beautifully sleek spa. Alternatively, if you're seeking sea views, Amara has arguably the best. For more, see our pick of the best hotels in Cyprus .

La Palma, Canary Islands

La Palma is the Canaries’ greenest and most unspoiled spot, with pristine night skies ideal for star-gazing and pine-scented air that clears the mind as much as the lungs. It’s also a walkers’ island, where footpath signposts outnumber cars. Rock pools and waterfalls refresh flagging travellers, and the boutique hotel scene is surprisingly sharp. Lighthouse-turned-hotel Faro Punta Cumplida is dressed up with a swimming pool and silk bed linens; in the capital, Santa Cruz de La Palma, Hotel San Telmo , a restored 17th-century building, sets delightful sun-filled rooms around a garden and rooftop terrace.

Where to stay: For a truly memorable stay, bed down in Faro Punta Cumplida , a still-functioning 18th-century lighthouse in the rugged northeast of the island, arguably La Palma’s most enchanting region. Elsewhere, Hotel San Telmo is perfectly-located in the oldest part of Santa Cruz de La Palma.

Alcazar Gardens UNESCO World Heritage Site Seville Andalusia Spain

Seville, Spain

Average March temperature : 21°C

The south coast of Spain is a good bet year-round, but March is a time for Seville to shine. The Andalusian city has warmer temperatures than many popular European destinations, which can become unbearable during the summer months. In spring, you're less likely to face the crowds but can wander around with just a light jacket in hand. Spend your time eating and drinking your way through the city – tapas at El Rinconcillo followed by drinks at one of Seville's many rooftop bars is highly recommended.

Where to stay: Built specially for Seville’s 1929 Expo, Alfonso XIII was commissioned by the then king of Spain, who gave it his own name. Now, The hotel’s 148 rooms alternate Andalusian , Castilian and Moorish decorative styles, making this a beautiful and unusual choice. Meanwhile, Corral del Rey is a 16-room boutique divided across buildings on either side of the narrow street with which it shares its name. Two of the rooms have private pool terraces for a glass of wine while taking a dip.

Average March temperature 19°C For a taste of sunny southern California without the crowds San Diego cant be beaten....

San Diego, California

For a taste of sunny southern California without the crowds, San Diego can’t be beaten. It’s an eternal beach-bum city with a temperament permanently set to ‘chill’. Join the surfer dudes and VW vans at Ocean Beach, or cycle past perennial volleyball games along the Pacific Beach boardwalk, stopping now and then to sip a homespun brew (AleSmith, Green Flash, Ballast Point). It’s laid-back, yes, but not lazy: there’s plenty of energy in the city’s exploding street art-scene (try North Park, where even utility boxes have been given a paint job). Or get experimental at restaurants such as Wrench and Rodent (‘unorthodox nigiri and sashimi’) and the Gaslamp Quarter’s craft cocktail bars (find Noble Experiment behind a wall of kegs).

Where to stay: Les Artistes in Del Mar, an affordable converted motel with artist-themed rooms: the first-floor 'Gaugin' and 'Diego Rivera' both have baths. Or, if it's a story you're after, few hotels in America can claim as compelling history as the Hotel del Coronado (or ‘the Del’ to those in the know), which celebrates its 135th birthday in 2023. For living like a local, this converted loft should do the trick.

Whitsunday Islands, Australia

Average March temperature : 22°C

It’s peak season here, but with good reason. Longer, sunnier days are ideal for sailing , the best way to explore what are among the world’s clearest waters and whitest beaches. Living up to its name, Whitehaven, in the Great Barrier Reef and only accessible by boat, is covered in bone-white sand. The Whitsundays’ newest, most secluded retreat, Elysian, only has 10 rooms, so even at the busiest time of year, guests have their own piece of Eden. And by rooms, we really mean oceanfront villas , with Australian hardwood interiors and rainforest views. It’s almost impossible to leave, but do try, or you’ll miss out on twilight-yoga classes and swimming in the retreat’s private cove.

Where to stay: Hayman Island , a polished Great Barrier Reef hotel with brutalist architecture and softly sexy rooms. Alternatively, Daydream Island Resort is a breezy, barefoot retreat ideal for families. For something private, this apartment has impeccable views.

Garden Route, South Africa

There’s no better time than spring to meander the Garden Route . We’ve described driving the Western Cape to the Eastern Cape as South Africa’s greatest hit compilation and it’s true: absurdly beautiful beaches, ragged mountains, wine country, virgin forests, inland lakes and amazing wildlife, from whales and dolphins to the Big Five. March is blissfully temperate and falls neatly outside the high seasons. Do it right, and do it slow: the best bits aren’t in the driving but exploring outside the car, whether that’s canoeing through Garden Route National Park or hiking Robberg Nature Reserve’s wild and wonderful cliffs.

Where to stay: Imposing and grand, Ellerman House is both intensely private and incredibly warm, with one of the best private art collections in South Africa. In Hermanus, The Marine has a prime position, and is comfortable and upmarket.

Havana, Cuba

Average March temperature: 28°C

What is it about Havana that’s so enchanting? Is it really just cigars and classic cars? Or is it the sensually rag-tag mix of weathered Spanish mansions, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, punchy food and grande dame hotels? It’s all of it, of course. Tick off old-school experiences, such as sipping Daiquiris in Hemingway’s hangouts, salsa dancing and relaxing in the cigar room at Brando’s favourite, the Grand Packard; then hit up the newer spots: Salchipizza, a bakery from Michelin-starred chef Alberto González; pulled-pork crepes at Belview Art Café.

Where to stay: Casa de Miriam y Sinai is a fantastic first-floor flat oasis of calm and space, with three spacious rooms, one with a street-side balcony, which are spotless and have top-drawer bathrooms. The colourful creative Malecón 663 has individually-decorated rooms, a restaurant, several bars and a concept store.

Mergui Archipelago, Myanmar

Average March temperature : 33°C

There are around 800 islands in Myanmar’s Andaman Sea archipelago, and no places to stay. And that’s exactly what makes it special: it’s accessible, close to the border of Thailand , and yet completely remote. Populated only by the Moken people, settlements are few. Instead, there are just empty beaches, clumps of thick, primeval jungle and untouched coral reefs. The yachties’ version of Shangri-La, one can only visit by boat. With steady winds, clear waters and balmy temperatures, March is a great time for diving, particularly at the ominously named Shark Cave. Others can stick to trekking, getting up close to civets and crab-eating macaques.

Where to stay : With a pool overlooking the beach and horizon, you'll see some of the most impressive sunsets from Victoria Cliff Hotel in Kawthung. On Kyun Pila island, Awei Pila 's outdoor huts feel particularly special.

St Martin, Caribbean

Average March Temperature : 28°C

One island, two nations. That’s the appeal of St Martin, or St Maarten. The Dutch side is the party-hearty bit: casinos, the cruise-ship dock, duty-free malls. Amble to the French side, though, and things get more refined. There’s the pretty town of Marigot, and fine food (L’Auberge Gourmande, in a vintage Creole cottage, is the spot for escargot and veal). Most of the island’s buildings were flattened by 2017’s Hurricane Irma, but it’s been quick to rebuild. Capital Philipsburg is fully restored, and most of the big-ticket retreats have been revamped and reopened. (Belmond La Samanna’s new retro-chic look is a triumph.) Early March sees the Heineken Regatta blow into town with food stalls, bars and live concerts bringing the party to a specially constructed Regatta Village.

Where to stay: Overlooking an idyllic golden stretch of sand, Belmond La Samanna , is a sparkling resort located in St. Martin’s smartest neighbourhood. Those looking for something more private will appreciate this idyllic loft overlooking the perfectly turquoise waters.

Jaipur, India

Average March temperature : 32°C

The Pink City is a must-visit anyway, but come March it’s also the yellow city, the red city, the blue city and every-other-coloured city, due to the Holi festivities. Though you’ll certainly get covered in rainbow powder paint, breathe a sigh of relief that it’s not quite as wild here as in Delhi . In Jaipur, the vibe is more local gathering than en masse mania. Despite India’s signature chaos, there’s always been something very regal about Jaipur – the palaces, the temples, the forts – and you can add hotels to that list, too. Suján Rajmahal Palace just might be the last word in opulence, an actual palace that’s hosted Queen Elizabeth II and Jackie Onassis. It was recently refurbished with lavish, custom-designed wallpaper and fabrics.

Where to stay: Suján Rajmahal Palace is a gloriously revamped hotel with a colourful past. For grandeur, Fairmont Jaipur is a 255-room extravaganza set in terraced water gardens with Mughal-style pavilions and frangipani trees, while larger groups can rent their own castle on Airbnb .

San diego, california.

There is no better warm-weather destination any time of year than Southern California , and if you’re looking for a classic California beach vacation, look no further than the bustling beach city of San Diego . Due to its proximity to Mexico, the ocean, and the desert, by March, San Diego is already fairly warm, inviting beachgoers, surfers, artists, and everyone in between to come and explore the stunning coastline of California .

If you’re looking for a truly unique beach destination within San Diego, La Jolla Coves is going to be a top recommendation from locals. If you’re more of a culture-focused traveler, check out Balboa Park , a gorgeous destination home to museums, gardens, and restaurants. This is also a great place to base your travels out of, and there are many hotels in the area. Balboa Park is close to Sunset Cliffs Natural Area and Cabrillo National Monument—two other incredible destinations you just have to see during your time in this Southern California city.

Some of the most popular areas to stay in San Diego are Ocean Beach and Pacific Beach , which both offer a fun environment and nearby beach access. These are both great options for a home base during your trip, especially if you’ve never visited San Diego before, because they give you easy access to a lot of the major attractions, restaurants, and nature throughout the city.

Getting to San Diego is easy. There is a major airport and many major highways that lead to San Diego. It is only a few hours’ drive from Los Angeles , making it easy to link the two cities into one trip. It is basically a necessity to have a car during your time in San Diego, though. Many destinations are not reachable via public transit only, and having a rental car will make your trip far less stressful.

The 10 best warm places to visit in March

travel somewhere warm in march

Spring has landed and the Northern Hemisphere is hotting up, fast. Many regions are entering their high season, with prices and crowds on the rise. But the best warm places to visit in March include plenty of crowd-free beach time too.

Across Central and South America, beach resorts are dusting off the loungers and firing up the cocktail blenders. Anticipation rises with the temperatures , so expect an uptick in competition for the best stays and book early. It’s also the first month of the year when the mainland US can really claim to be a beach destination again, with fantastic options on both coasts. Here’s where’s hot in March.

A hiker carries a yellow backpack and traverses a trail across desert plants towards the rugged mountains in the distance.

Where is it warm in March?

  • St. Augustine, Florida
  • Carmel-by-the-Sea, California
  • Big Bend, Texas
  • Pensacola Beach, Florida
  • Island of Hawai‘i
  • Tampa, Florida
  • Saint Barthélemy
  • Mulegé, Mexico
  • Cartagena, Colombia
  • Placencia, Belize

Best warm places to visit in the US in March

Spring brings with it the welcome return of warmer temperatures to much of the US. On the mainland, Florida, Texas, and California offer brilliant beach vacations, while Hawai‘i is as reliably sun-soaked as ever.

1. St. Augustine, Florida

A beautiful and soothing fountain in the courtyard in front of Spanish Renaissance architecture buildings.

  • Average temperature: 63°F
  • Average hours of daylight: 12 hours

With 500 years of history to dip into, St. Augustine is perhaps the most historic city in the US . Its tightly packed, eminently walkable National Historic Landmark District is a treasure trove of colonial architecture. From the Castillo de San Marcos and Misión de Nombre de Dios , in bawdy taverns and rickety wooden houses, history spills onto the streets.

With daytime temperatures regularly in the mid-70s, March is warm enough to make for the beach. This is Florida, after all. At St. Augustine Beach , rent a fishing rod at St. Johns Pier or ride the waves at the end of A Street. Further out, Anastasia Beach is a little more rustic and offers lovely kayaking and wildlife watching.

On March 9th and 10th, the Celtic Music and Heritage Festival brings a taste of Ireland, Scotland and Wales to town. Play Celtic games, drink in the food and culture, and watch the world’s oldest St. Patrick’s Day parade .

2. Carmel-by-the-Sea, California

Green shrubbery and an aged tree create a picturesque frame in the foreground, while the tranquil coast stretches ahead, revealing the shimmering waters that separate it from the rolling hills in the background.

  • Average temperature: 54°F

Carmel is the epitome of quaint and curious California. Fairytale cottages and mansions, a scattering of chic boutiques, low-key galleries and independent restaurants— you’ll find no big chains here . Well-heeled ( but not high-heeled ) residents share its famed white-sand beach with surfers and sea lions on their daily dog walk. Everything seems to move in slow motion.

March sees average high temperatures climb into the late 60s; warm enough to enjoy its spectacular outdoors, cold enough to keep away the crowds. The one-square-mile village is eminently walkable—a network of courtyards and passageways connecting its unique architecture to century-old stories. The striking Carmel Mission Basilica appears plucked from the set of a Spaghetti Western .

To the south, Point Lobos State Nature Reserve is a hiking nirvana. Dramatic, rocky bluffs, tangled trails and spectacular views are a given. To the north along 17-mile-drive, on the granite headland overlooking Carmel Bay , America’s most photographed tree: the enigmatic Lone Cypress.

3. Big Bend National Park, Texas

A mountainous terrain along steep canyons as seen from a mountain peak.

  • Average temperature: 60°F

There are parks and then there’s Big Bend National Park , Texas’s ‘gift to the nation’. Among its natural treasures, the entire Chisos Mountain range and a decent chunk of the Chihuahuan Desert . Crisscrossing it are meandering rivers, hiking trails, a thriving wildlife and the history of Native America.

March is the busiest time for visitors, although Big Bend’s natural isolation means it’s never really crowded. Temperatures climb greatly over long days with average highs in the mid-70s, attracting adventurers and naturists from across the world. It’s the season of the bluebonnet bloom , when the state flower blankets landscapes turning green fields into white-capped blue seas.

The Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive is an easy 30 minute introduction to its splendor. From there, pick your preference. Well-trodden routes like the Santa Elena Canyon and Langford Hot Springs may be busier. Instead, search out the lush greenery of Cattail Falls or, after rain, the waterfall at the end of Pine Canyon Trail . Fly into El Paso and it’s a four hour drive to Big Bend.

4. Pensacola Beach, Florida

A man with a surfboard walks on the shore of a wavy beach.

The westernmost city in the Florida Panhandle, Pensacola offers a dreamy beach vacation in March. Average high temps touching the 70s and 18 miles of white-sanded, emerald-watered seclusion just begging to be explored.

On the barrier island of Santa Rosa , Pensacola Beach is the place to go. Alongside the big block hotels, adventure parks and tourist traps, there’s plenty of space to find solitude and get lost in nature.

It sits in the heart of the US’s largest area of protected coast, the Gulf Islands National Seashore . Wild and untamed, it’s brilliantly set up for visitors with every feasible outdoor activity available—hiking and biking, boating and birdwatching, ranger programs and diving excursions. Its warm waters and mellow waves are a magnet for learning surfers . To get a taste of it all, walk the demarcated Eco Trail that shows off the area’s abundant wildlife in all its glory.

5. Island of Hawai‘i

A woman in an orange bikini is submerged in sea water while surfing.

  • Average temperature: 67°F

The Big Island is the most geologically diverse and jaw-dropping of the Hawai‘ian archipelago. And it’s one of the warmest places to visit in March in the US.

The star of the show is undoubtedly Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park and its two active volcanoes. At its center, enormous but passive Mauna Loa dominates. Far below, Kīlauea , with its vast steaming double crater that’s been coughing up lava continuously for 25 years. If it’s too hot to hike, drive around the rim of Kīlauea crater. Follow the road as it descends to the sea and you’ll pass the spectacular Chain of Craters .

Back at sea level, sun-soaked beaches are ready to bake the warmth back into your bones. Kua Bay on the Kona Coast is my pick, a perfect crescent of snow-white sand and sea that understandably draws in the crowds. If it’s too busy for your taste, hike the coastal trail to nearby Kukio Beach .

6. Tampa, Florida

A row of old brick buildings alongside the traffic lights and tall palm trees in a historic neighborhood.

Tampa has long embraced its status as being a little rougher round the edges than its glitzier neighbors like Orlando . Look past the veneer and you’ll find a city upping its vacation game. Beautiful beaches and parks, one of Florida’s funnest nights out, benefited by daytime temperatures in the 70s all year round.

Downtown is all about the revitalized Riverwalk that runs along the Hillsborough River to the Garrison Channel. Nearly three miles of boardwalk and parks, markets and attractions, bars and restaurants framed by some stunning contemporary architecture. Start by browsing Heights Market , stop to people watch at Curtis Hixon Park and finish up with drinks at Sparkman Wharf .

Come night, historic and cosmopolitan Ybor City puts on a party. Bars and clubs pop, especially during Spring Break, and the waft of freshly rolled cigars lingers in the air.

Best beach vacations in March

For many, me included, temperatures across most of the US don’t yet warrant a pure beach vacation in March. Expand your horizons, however, and you’ll find a stretch of golden sand with your name on it nearby.

7. Saint Barthélemy

Anchored boats in a harbour surrounded by town buildings and lush foliage.

  • Average temperature: 79°F

Better known as Saint Barts , this tiny French island is a jewel in the glistening crown of the Caribbean . Dotting 20 miles of coastline, each of its 14 exceptional beaches would be the most beautiful in almost any other country. Here though, each only seems more incredible than the last.

To see and be seen, it has to be Saint-Jean Beach complete with runway for easy private jet access. I much prefer the seclusion of Colombier Beach on the leeward coast and Saline Beac h on the windward coast. Each requires a walk to reach, but that just means fewer people and more magic.

Base yourself in the atmospheric capital, Gustavia . From the colonial architecture to the superyacht filled harbor, its old and modern personalities live in easy harmony. Historic buildings like Fort Karl rub shoulders with high-end hotels and restaurants like Bonito Saint Barth . It’s all very lovely—particularly from March 21st to 24th when the St. Barths Bucket Regatta turns the town wild.

8. Mulegé, Mexico

Playa el Requeson, Mulege, Baja California Sur, Mexico. A small desert bay in the Sea of Cortez.

  • Average temperature: 62°F

On my first road trip down Baja’s Highway 1, tiny Mulegé appeared as sanctuary on a long, dusty journey. On the Gulf of California , set in a narrow arroyo of the Río Mulegé, its old-world feel speaks to Baja’s particular appeal.

Its palm and mangrove forests are an oasis in the desert terrain. At its heart, a scattering of hotels surround the ancient town square. On its south side, the 18th century Misión Santa Rosalía de Mulegé looms. A great spot for a photo, it also affords views towards Muelegé’s main draw: the beaches.

Head straight for Bahía Concepción , in my view Baja’s most astounding beach. An unfettered paradise, unspoiled by development, unrepentant in its barren beauty. Dotted among its many bays you’ll find palapas in varying states of repair to shelter from the sun. There are camper parks if you need facilities, but why bother when there’s so much space to spread out? I stayed a full week. Nearby Loreto i s the nearest airport , but this really is road trip country.

9. Cartagena, Colombia

Three joyful women, dressed in colourful attire, skillfully balancing basins of fruits on their heads.

  • Average temperature: 82°F

Cartagena is proof that you can have it all— a magical city of history and culture and postcard-worthy beaches . In March, it sizzles. Average temperatures sit in the mid 80s and it’s dry season, so expect long, bright days.

The power capital of the 16th century Spanish Empire, the city is an embarrassment of historical riches from the impassive Castillo San Felipe de Barajas and the gruesome Palacio de la Inquisición. While the Old Town streets are full of colorful casas converted into boutiques, bars, galleries, and cafés.

When the heat builds, Cartagena’s beaches are close by. None is more convenient than glitzy Bocagrande , the Miami Beach of Colombia. Playa El Laguito in the Castillegrand neighborhood is a bit more chilled. From here you can take a boat to the beaches of Isla de la Tierra Bomba or beyond to Isa Barú , where the beaches are idyllic but the crowds less so.

10. Placencia, Belize

A white sand rocky shore by the tranquil turquoise sea against the cloudy blue sky.

A spring favorite among Americans in the know, Placencia sits on the far southern tip of a narrow Belizean peninsula. Nicknamed ‘the cay you can drive to’, the 27-mile highway that connects it to the mainland is testimony to its tourist appeal.

Arrive and you’ll soon see why. A mosaic of Belize and Mayan cultures, Creole and Garifuna mashed up and dropped onto a beachy wonderland. The food, art, and music all reflect as much—esoteric, intriguing, and delicious.

Then there’s the jungle rich in Mayan ruins and stories. The main draws here are Lubaantun, Nim Li Punit and Xunantunich . While there, don’t miss the chance to go jaguar spotting at the world’s first jaguar sanctuary, Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary . Twitchers will also want to watch the sky for the 500-plus bird species that call Placencia home.

Finally, the beaches. Miles and miles of impossibly white sand, seas that seem to glow and the kind of aquatic setting diving and snorkeling were invented for. The perfect March vacation.

Where is hot and cheap in March?

Two males submerged in the waters of a natural cave.

With spring temperatures thawing in the Northern Hemisphere, the options for a hot and cheap vacation have improved rapidly. Mexico remains a stalwart, as are the sleepier resorts further south in Belize , Guatemala and the rest of Central America . In fact, quick and cheap flights put most of South America within easy distance. Need help narrowing your options? Try KAYAK Explore .

How these destinations were chosen

These destinations were chosen using a combination of data and personal experience. The criteria used to decide destinations are as follows:

  • Temperature and hours of sun: Weather data is pulled from a third-party site, Weatherbase. Temperatures, daylight, and hours of sun are daily averages.
  • Personal experience: Our expert travel writers travel year-round, often chasing the sun. To enhance KAYAK data and add a more personal approach to these articles writers are encouraged to include destinations based on experience.
  • A mix of short-haul and long-haul: To ensure a balanced list a mix of short and long-haul destinations are included. This is to help make sure everyone finds what they’re looking for, whether that is a tropical paradise or a nearby sunny staycation.

If you can’t wait until March, there are plenty of warm places to visit in February . Or you can look to combine some beach time with party time. Spring festivals erupt around the world, and I’ve covered many in the best places to travel in March .

Visiting during Barcelona's shoulder season has its perks, including smaller crowds and lower rates on airfare and accommodations. Plus, average temperatures hover near the low 60s in March, so you won't overheat while exploring must-see sights such as Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter) and Park Güell, a whimsical park designed by Antoni Gaudí. What's more, you can explore other popular Gaudí landmarks like Casa Batlló and Basílica de la Sagrada Família without hordes of tourists blocking your view. When you've worked up an appetite, venture to the quiet Gràcia neighborhood to sample authentic Catalan cuisine on a food tour.

Straddling the border of Argentina and Brazil, Iguazu Falls is one of the largest waterfall systems in the world. While the natural beauty of the falls will take your breath away year-round, travelers who plan a trip in March enjoy the added bonus of fewer crowds, pleasant temperatures and cheaper accommodations. Although March falls within Maui's peak season, its excellent weather (think: average daytime temps in the high 70s and low 80s) and prime conditions for water sports and wildlife viewing make it a superb time to visit. Experienced surfers can head to popular surf spots like Ho'okipa Beach and Pe'ahi (dubbed "Jaws") to hang ten, while beginners stick to the waves at Kaanapali Beach. Meanwhile, animal lovers can look for migrating humpback whales during a whale watching cruise. To save some coin, book your Maui hotel and airfare at least a few months in advance.

These five towns on the Italian Riviera are beautiful any time of year, but there are a few benefits to visiting in March. The cooler weather (think: average temperatures sit in the high 50s) makes it a perfect time to hike Cinque Terre's famous trails, although rain may cause some of the trails to close at times. Additionally, many local shops reopen after closing for winter. Since spring is one of Cinque Terre's shoulder seasons, you'll find fewer tourists this time of year, allowing you to comfortably explore the area on foot or by boat.

March marks the end of Cape Town, South Africa's busy summer season, when temperatures begin to drop and crowds thin out. Tourists who plan a March vacation will be rewarded with cheaper rates and pleasant temps in the mid-70s, perfect for exploring top sights like Table Mountain and Camps Bay Beach. Plus, fall kicks off Cape Town's wine harvest, which makes it a great time to explore the world-renowned Constantia Valley wine region . Situated between two of Utah 's five main national parks, Moab is an outdoor adventure hub known for its awe-inspiring red rock formations. Travelers can admire them during visits to Arches National Park (where the world's densest concentration of natural sandstone arches resides) and Canyonlands National Park (which is the largest national park in the state). Travelers who time their trip for the beginning of the month will have the best chance of avoiding crowds while still enjoying comfortable weather in the 50s and 60s. Other must-do March activities include hiking, rock climbing, off-roading and camping.

Whether you're enjoying a show at the Vancouver International Dance Festival or admiring cherry blossoms in Queen Elizabeth Park, there are plenty of reasons to visit Vancouver in March. Spend your time on a walking or biking tour of popular neighborhoods like Granville Island and Yaletown, then ride the Skyride gondola to the top of Grouse Mountain for breathtaking views of the city. The reasons for traveling to this German city in March are multifold. Although you'll have to deal with some chilly weather (average temperatures sit in the high 40s), visiting during this shoulder season means fewer crowds and lower prices. March also brings the city's annual Starkbierfest event, a traditional Bavarian beer festival, and St. Patrick's Day, one of the largest cultural events in Munich. When you're not engaging in the festivities, spend the rest of your time sightseeing at famous attractions like St. Peter's Church and the Munich Residenz, the largest city palace in Germany.

While you can spot wildlife in the Galápagos year-round, March is nesting season for animals like green sea turtles, iguanas and red-footed boobies. Keep an eye out near the water, too, as sea lions are known to hang on the beaches. And though March falls within the wet season (you'll want to bring an umbrella), there should still be ample warm, sunny days to enjoy the beach, particularly toward the end of the month.

Boasting 150-plus miles of hiking trails, Big Bend National Park in southwest Texas appeals to travelers with an affinity for the outdoors. Observe wildlife (including more than 450 species of birds), kayak along the Rio Grande or explore Big Bend while horseback riding. Keep in mind that spring is the park's busiest season, so you won't be the only one admiring the spectacular mountain views. Plan accordingly by allotting extra time for waiting in lines and booking your trip accommodations far in advance.

One of Cozumel, Mexico's biggest draws is its abundance of aquatic activities. The country's largest Caribbean island is one of the best places to scuba dive thanks to its clear water and proximity to the world's second-largest barrier reef. To get in the water, head to Chankanaab Adventure Beach Park to dive, snorkel or swim with dolphins. If you'd rather stay dry, sign up for a glass-bottom boat tour or lounge on one of the island's white sand beaches. Because March is outside the Atlantic hurricane season, you'll enjoy plenty of warm, dry weather.

Although March ushers in some of Jamaica's lowest temps, this time of year is by no means cold. The Best Places to Travel in March

By Caitlin Morton and Matt Ortile

Okavango Delta Botswana

You're reading this because you're likely deep in internet research, trying to determine the best places to travel in March. It's that awkward month between winter and spring, when it can get surprisingly hot and still unseasonably cold at the flip of a switch. Whenever leaving the house, it's a toss up—is this puffer weather, or the time to switch to sandals ?

Flee the indecisive climate and get thee to somewhere that's properly hot. Or properly cold. Though the notorious spring breakers tend to command all the attention at airports and train stations this month, there's so much more to traveling in March than sipping margaritas with a herd of Gen Zers (sorry, Gen Z). As spring looms in the northern hemisphere, some destinations begin to emerge from winter hibernation with blooming flowers . Meanwhile, buzzy spots in South America and Asia offer a blessed lack of the humidity (and crowds) you might experience in the busier summer months (did someone say shoulder season?).

Whether you’re looking to warm up with a tropical beach vacation or want to cling to the last days of winter with a ski trip, this is the month to do it. Here are nine of the best places to travel in March, from Big Sky in Montana to the Okavango Delta in Botswana.

All listings featured in this story are independently selected by our editors. However, when you book something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission. This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

Panama is a great place to visit any time of year, thanks to its biodiverse jungles, sprawling beaches, and relative lack of crowds compared to neighboring Costa Rica. But March is an especially great time to experience that outdoor splendor, with temperatures in the 70s and 80s and lots of sunshine (the rainy season kicks off in April). The Caribbean-facing province of Bocas del Toro is a one-stop shop for both gorgeous beaches and active wildlife. For a truly memorable experience, take a nighttime snorkeling trip through bioluminescent waters with Hello Travel Panama .

A straight shot south from Bocas del Toro, the Pacific Ocean-facing province Chiriquí offers an equally beautiful, but wholly different slice of nature. Here you can hike through cloud forests, swim beneath roaring waterfalls, and witness the panoramic sunrise from the summit of Volcán Barú. Check in at the 10-room boutique hotel  Finca El Oasis right on the edge of the volcano, or venture a bit off the Pacific Gulf to the remote, luxurious 400-acre resort of  Isla Palenque . And make sure to allow time for Panama City, where a revived historic center thrives—no wonder we recently named it one of the Best Places to Go in Central and South America in 2024 .

Cartagena Colombia

Cartagena, Colombia

Cartagena is one of the best places to travel in March, thanks to weather primed for both city exploration and beach relaxation. Temperatures stick around the high 70s and low 80s without too much humidity, and ocean breezes make for cool and comfortable evenings. Visit the UNESCO-listed Old Town, complete with cobbled streets and colonial-era architecture, as well as the high-rise-heavy neighborhood of Bocagrande and street-art haven of  Getsemaní .

While there are several city beaches to enjoy, it’s worth taking a quick drive outside city limits to see some truly pristine stretches of sand. Take a 1.5-hour bus ride to Isla Barú, where you can swim in the cerulean waters at Playa Blanca and sample plates of ceviche at local restaurants. You can also take a boat ride to the Rosario Islands, a coral archipelago about one hour southwest of the city, to experience some of the region’s best snorkeling. Back in town, rest up at Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards darling Sofitel Legend Santa Clara , located right at the northern edge of Cartagena’s historic district.

Northern Rivers, Australia

This northeastern corner of New South Wales was ravaged by massive floods in 2022, but after recovery efforts in 2023 partially boosted by tourism, the area excitedly began welcoming visitors again this year. That, paired with its reputation for coastal resort towns, scenic seaside drives, gorgeous Pacific beaches, and adventuresome hikes and treks, earned it a spot on our list of Best Places to Go in 2024 .

March will be an especially fun time to visit the land Down Under: Since it's the southern hemisphere, the weather will just be cooling off from summer—ideal if you prefer more temperate climes. The wave-lashed town of Byron Bay will be hosting the 2024 Australian Pro Adaptive Surfing Championship , the country’s first international event for surfers with disabilities, which should make for some exciting energy along the coast.

Locals and visitors alike will be spoiled with a bevy of openings in Northern Rivers: Copperstone by the Range Estates will open its equestrian-style ranch in Bangalow in early 2024 (their properties Swell Hotel and the California-style Sun Ranch in Byron Bay are both epitomes of Aussie style and chill), while in Yamba on the southern fringe of Northern Rivers, the designer and stylist Sheree Commerford will open a breezy seaside inn called Il Delfino in early 2024.

Ilulissat Greenland

Ilulissat, Greenland

Greenland  is icy, mysterious, and one of the most naturally beautiful places on the planet. And while the concept of the summertime midnight sun is appealing, there are many advantages to skirting the June to September crowds in favor of a late-winter sojourn. The coastal town of Ilulissat is particularly appealing in March, when there are less tourists, lower hotel prices, and a lack of mosquitoes and other pesky bugs (a major problem in the summer months). The town also happens to shine most beautifully at this time, with a thick layer of snow shrouding the region in a peaceful silence.

You can reach Ilulissat via an Air Greenland flight from either Copenhagen or Reykjavik. Montage Big Sky Montana

Big Sky, Montana

If you think ski season is over by the time March rolls around, think again: Montana’s Big Sky Resort doesn’t close its slopes until late April, meaning you can still enjoy prime conditions during this month. Big Sky features an incredible 5,850 acres of skiable terrain, with sizable portions dedicated to both beginner and expert runs (keep an eye out for the brand-new Lone Peak Tram opening this winter.) It’s easily one of the best ski destinations in the country, but the region offers so much more than rides down the slopes. Yellowstone National Park is just an hour away, for example, and the park’s geothermal pools look even more brilliant set against a backdrop of snow.

You could also have your fill of skiing at Montage Big Sky , an alpine resort that offers ski-in, ski-out access to Big Sky Resort. On top of that, the property also provides guests with opportunities for snowshoeing, Nordic skiing, hiking, and fly-fishing—not to mention some seriously luxurious interiors. Cozy up by the lobby fireplace or snuggle in the fur throw at the foot of your bed, then treat yourself to a massage or grab a craft cocktail at the après-ski bar. Consider these just some of the reasons Big Sky is one of the Best Places to Go in North America this year.

Best Islands in the World Raja Ampat Islands Indonesia

Raja Ampat, Indonesia

It takes a bit of effort to reach the Raja Ampat Islands —flying first to  Jakarta , then to Sorong, where most travelers hop on a liveaboard. But once you arrive, you’ll be greeted by lush jungles, blue channels, and biodiverse reefs. The archipelago is truly a scuba diver’s dream, where an average dive gets you up close to manta rays, hawksbill turtles, and around 1,300 species of colorful coral-dwelling fish. There’s really no bad time to visit, but March typically yields the best diving weather (think less rain and calmer waters).

The most popular way to explore Raja Ampat is by booking a small cruise or yacht, and you have several great options to choose from. You could try Aqua Expeditions and set sail on the long-range cruising yacht, Aqua Blu , which offers seven-night, island-hopping itineraries . The boat has 15 sea-facing suites and a spa, and guests can partake in activities like snorkeling, kayaking, diving to manta ray cleaning stations, and searching for elusive bird of paradise species on guided hikes.

Southeast Asia's Lion City is aptly named because it's facing the new year with a great big roar. There's always lots to do in Singapore, especially in the year ahead (the cosmopolitan city-state is on our list of Best Places to Go in Asia in 2024 ), but there's something happening in March that's whipping the island into a tizzy: The pop princess Taylor Swift is bringing her Eras Tour to the Singapore National Stadium for her sole stop in the region. Hotels bookings are reportedly through the roof, and additional flights have been added , but keep an eye out for the openings of the new Grand Hyatt and the latest Raffles on Sentosa Island for more room at the inn, as it were.

Beyond the Swiftie reasons to swing by Singapore in March, there's also the return of glamorous and ultra-luxury train travel with Belmond's Eastern & Oriental Express , which will, in February, have begun their new itineraries from Singapore into the Malaysian peninsula and back, featuring excursions into Taman Negara National Park and culinary tours on Penang Island, which should be incredibly fun and engaging—that is, if you can tear yourself away from your plush state room or the swanky dining car.

Dana Point California

Dana Point, California

Dana Point, a small harbor city along California’s southern coast, is known for its incredible dolphin and whale populations. That reputation was cemented in early 2021, when the town was dubbed the first “Whale Heritage Site” in the United States, courtesy of the World Cetacean Alliance. Dana Point is now one of five global destinations to receive such an honor, specifically created to recognize destinations that offer dolphin- and whale-watching experiences that are both responsible and sustainable.

While you can see some whale species year-round, February and March are known as peak season to see the California Gray Whales as they make their annual migration to Baja California . Book a 2.5-hour tour with Captain Dave’s Dolphin & Whale Watching Safari , where you can see the magnificent mammals from an underwater glass pod while listening to a live narration from expert naturalists. Or, book the OC Wine Cruise with Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching, which lets passengers sample four different organic wines while they scan the sunset-lit waters for breaching whales.

Okavango Delta Botswana

Okavango Delta, Botswana

Picture it: Seasonal floodwaters rolling into parched sands and transforming them into a delicate tracery of glittering rivers and channels—the dry plains once again dripping with new life. That's the scene that greets you at the Okavango Delta in Botswana, the world's largest inland river delta. It plays host to a wide variety of wildlife, thriving across great swathes of the land held by the Moremi Game Reserve. You may encounter safari lions, leopards, giraffes, and rhinos; and when the floodwaters quench the land, you'll paddle in canoes past hippos, elephants, and crocodiles.

In the summer (that's January and February in Botswana, given it's the southern hemisphere), rainfall from the Angola highlands is drained by the Okavango River into the delta, where the water levels will rise and fall over the next four months, from March through June, making this month the best time to see the transformation happen before your very eyes.

Looking for a place to stay? African Bush Camps opened the riverside Khwai Lediba in 2023, and will open Atzaro Okavango in March 2024. The latter will feature 10 lagoon-side suites and offer peak safari-luxe vibes and a strong sense of place through design. (To no surprise, it's one of the Best Places to Go in Africa in 2024 .)

March marks a transitional period from winter to spring, with temperatures easing up and flowers beginning to bloom. Perhaps the month will also mark a significant milestone for you if you're planning your destination wedding , your honeymoon or just a romantic anniversary trip . If you're in the US, it can be a tad challenging to predict the weather in a month that famously "comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb."

There are, however, countless cities and countries that have more predictable forecasts (think 70 and sunny) in March. Of course, one couple's version of a romantic getaway may not suit another. For instance, some may want to take a ski vacation. Others might want to lean into one of our favorite travel trends —slow travel—or enjoy the ease and sea breeze of all-inclusive resorts. Regardless of your travel goals, there's a spot for you with fabulous weather . These destinations will make you believe March is the best month to explore.

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona, Spain

Wondering where to travel in March if you're craving a bucket list-worthy getaway without the jammed itinerary? Embrace the slow travel trend and instead of jet-setting all over Europe (or even city-hopping across Spain), spend an extended holiday in the cosmopolitan city known as the capital of the nation's Catalonia region. Temperatures start creeping toward 60 degrees in March, but crowds are smaller than their late-spring and summer peaks. Couples will have elbow room and won't overheat as they explore whimsical and Gothic architecture (including a Gaudí tour) while eating Catalan must-haves like pa amb tomàquet and escalivada .

Things to Do: Barri Gòtic , Park Güell , Ciutat Vella, Casa Milà, Casa Batlló, La Sagrada Família , Picasso Museum, Barcelona Cathedral, Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya and a cooking class .

Places to Stay: Hotel Arts Barcelona , El Palace Hotel Barcelona , Cotton House Hotel, Autograph Collection , W Barcelona , Hotel Casa Fuster , Monument Hotel and Hotel Neri Relais & Chateaux‎ .

Vancouver, Canada

With spring winds blowing in, the year's third month may not scream "ski season" in North America, but Canadian resorts stay open through the middle of the year. It makes our Northern neighbors one of the best places to travel in March. Even if the snow is faux, the milder temperatures will allow couples to cruise the slopes, perhaps graduating from bunny to intermediate, instead of heading inside ASAP due to Jack Frost nipping at their noses. Have spring fever? Cherry blossoms bloom in Vancouver in early March (when the International Dance Festival honoring contemporary dance also typically occurs).

Things to Do: Vancouver International Dance Festival, ski destinations like Tremblant (Quebec), Mont St. Sauveur (Quebec), Whistler (Vancouver) and Marmot Basin (Alberta), Niagara Falls tour and Quebec City tour and cruise .

Places to Stay: Four Seasons Resort and Residences Whistler , Oak Bay Beach Hotel , Sonora Resort , Niagara Falls Marriott on the Falls and Toronto Marriott City Centre Hotel .

St. Lucia

Temperatures are a milder 80 degrees in March in St. Lucia, a Caribbean island less likely than Cancun to experience the tail end of spring break crowds. The island is home to all-inclusive resorts near the glistening sea, making for gorgeous backdrops for romantic honeymoon or anniversary dinners and beach days. The fuss-free planning that comes with having meals, snacks and other perks (like water sport equipment access) included doesn't hurt. Plus, the warm waters provide plenty of fodder for romantic getaway itineraries. Dive and snorkel, taking in marine life and coral reefs as you go, or simply sit on a white-sand beach, fruity beverage in hand, and chill.

Things to Do: Tet Paul Nature Trail (Stairway to Heaven), The Pitons, snorkel, scuba dive, Morne Coubaril Historical Adventure Park, Pigeon Island National Park, land and sea tour and make your own chocolate .

Places to Stay: Serenity at Coconut Bay , Calabash Cove Resort and Spa , Sandals Grande St. Lucia , Sandals Regency La Toc , Jade Mountain Resort , Cap Maison and Spa and Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort.

The Florida Keys

The Florida Keys

March is the best month to hit the Sunshine State before—dare we say it—the sunshine becomes a potential drawback. Temperatures are typically in the 70s and 80s during March, making it a welcome respite for people hailing from states that get a true winter. Though March isn't "peak season," couples can experience various things worth celebrating. St. Patrick's Day celebrations, for instance, are aplenty in these parts, ideal for couples with serious cabin fever. It's also still spring break season.

Things to Do: Sailing , The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum , Truman Little White House , Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park , deep sea fishing and snorkeling .

Places to Stay: Reef at Marathon Resort , Bungalows Key Largo , Little Palm Island Resort and Spa , Opal Key Resort and Marina and Baker's Cay Resort Key Largo, Curio Collection by Hilton .

St. Barts

The small French island of St. Barthélemy is a dreamy, romantic Caribbean locale set by the sparkling turquoise sea. The annual bucket regatta happens on the island each year in March—experience superyacht racing, perhaps for the first time, and social events. Tropical temperatures remain in the 70s, mild enough to feel like you can stick your toes in the sand and stay a while without letting anyone see you sweat.

Things to Do: Attend the St. Barths Bucket Regatta , snorkel or scuba dive , mingle at Nikki Beach Club , visit Colombier Beach .

Places to Stay: Pearl Beach Hotel , Cheval Blanc , Eden Rock , Rosewood Le Guanahani St Barth , Hôtel Le Village Saint Barth and Hotel Christopher Saint-Barth .

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston, South Carolina

The idyllic South Carolina port city with cobblestone streets and horse-drawn carriages feels straight out of another place in time. Historic inns and B&Bs with service that epitomizes Southern hospitality give a trip here a home-away-from-home feel. The warm vibes and mild temperatures make Charleston one of the best places to travel in March in the US for couples from cooler climates (it's also a worthy road trip for Southerners). The weather is generally in the mid-60s—low enough to consider layering without dreading going outdoors like you may be doing somewhere colder. In March, the city hosts its annual St. Patty's Day Parade.

Things to Do: Attend the St. Patrick's Day Parade downtown , historic horse and carriage tour , historic walking tour , Joe Riley Waterfront Park, The Battery, Rainbow Row and cruise at sunset .

Places to Stay: Wentworth Mansion , The Dewberry , Hotel Bennett , The Loutrel , French Quarter Inn , Barksdale House Inn , Fulton Lane Inn and The Jasmine House .

Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town, South Africa

March is a popular time to visit Cape Town. Honeymoon weather is at its finest during the month, sitting comfortably in the high-60s and low-70s with little rain. Cyclists hit the pavement for the world's largest timed bike race, the Cape Town Cycle Tour, each March. If you prefer a Peloton and blissful relaxation, stunning seaside resorts leave plenty of room for that. The resort town is home to both Atlantic and Indian Ocean beaches, penguins and a lauded wine region.

Things to Do: Attend (or ride in) the Cape Town Cycle Tour , penguin encounter , wine tasting , Boulders Beach, Clifton Beach and V&A Waterfront.

Places to Stay: Mount Nelson, a Belmond Hotel , The Silo Hotel , One&Only Cape Town , Ellerman Hotel , Cape Grace Hotel and Steenberg Hotel .

Munich, Germany

Munich, Germany

Beer fans consider Munich one of the low-key best places to vacation in March. Though chilly, the Munich social scene heats everything up. You may know all about Oktoberfest, but the large Bavarian beer festival called Starkbierfest takes place in March. St. Patrick's Day is also known for being a hopping good time, with raucous celebrations. Between pours, take in centuries-old architecture in Altstadt (Old Town), experience the arts and culture scene at one of the many museums, or shop at a night market for unique souvenirs.

Things to Do: Altstadt (Old Town), Glockenbachviertel, Marienplatz River Isar, Midnightbazar (night market every other Saturday at 5 p.m.), BMW Museum, Olympiapark, English Garden, Marienplatz and Nymphenburg Palace.

Places to Stay: Louis Hotel , Hotel Prinz München , Gästehaus Englischer Garten , Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski München and Andaz Munich Schwabinger Tor - a Concept by Hyatt and Hotel München Palace .

Jamaica

Jamaica's pleasant climate makes it one of the best honeymoon destinations in March. With temperatures in the 70s and the sun usually shining, every day can be a beach day here. The island is known for having some of the top all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean, making planning a total breeze. Speaking of breezes, you'll get plenty of those. The resorts come with beach access, in addition to unlimited food and beverage. Other perks like snorkeling excursions, water sport equipment access and intimate candlelit dinners under the stars can often be added on (or perhaps included).

Things to Do: Snorkel and enjoy a cruise , Seven Mile Beach, Dunn's River Falls and Park, and the Blue Hole .

Places to Stay: Excellence Oyster Bay , Sandals South Coast , Sandals Negril , Hilton Rose Hall Resort and Spa , Sans Souci and Sunset at the Palms .

New Hampshire

New Hampshire

Maple Weekend is bigger than Mardi Gras and St. Patrick's Day in New Hampshire. The annual event takes place in mid-March, and sugar houses invite guests to come watch as the sap is taken from the trees and boiled into the sweet stuff. Yes, tasting is included. Elsewhere, Portsmouth's nautical surroundings will get couples in a summer state of mind, even if temperatures are chilly, and Hanover's Appalachian Trail access is ideal for strolls and hikes.

Things to Do: Attend Maple Weekend or stop by a sugar house , cruise Kancamagus Highway, Franconia Notch State Park, tour Portsmouth by bike and hike the Appalachian Trail or Mount Washington.

Places to Stay: Omni Mount Washington , Wentworth By the Sea , The Inn at Thorn Hill and Spa , The Bedford Village Inn , The Hotel Concord , The Glen House Hotel and Residence Inn by Marriott Portsmouth Downtown/Waterfront .

Hawaii

With year-round mild weather, there's truly no bad time to visit the Aloha State. March makes for a good choice. Expect sunshine, blue skies and temperatures in the 70s. However, it's spring there, so a shower or two wouldn't be out of the ordinary during March vacations. Evenings are cooler—in the 60s—so pack layers for dinners out. Unlike the colder Atlantic beaches in the Northeast that won't warm until the summer, Hawaii's Pacific Ocean waters are warm enough to hang ten (or at least learn to surf). The Honolulu Festival brings celebrations and performances to the city each March.

Things to Do: Take a surf lesson , see sea turtles while snorkeling , attend the Honolulu Festival and attend a luau (your hotel might host one).

Places to Stay: Four Seasons Resort Hualalai , Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection , Koa Kea Resort On Poipu Beach , The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua , Hotel Wailea and The Laylow, Autograph Collection .

27 Cheap Destinations For 2024 With Great Weather in March

March is a great month for vacations because most of the world’s cheaper destinations have some of their nicest weather of the year this month, and they are generally not crowded anyway. The weather in the Caribbean and Central America is close to perfect in March and there are dozens of great choices in all price ranges. In fact, if you want to visit this area you might just skip to our list of the cheapest Caribbean islands .

Even if you aren’t near the Caribbean or don’t want to go to a beach, there are lots of great choices below. South America has early autumn weather in March, so some of the cities there can be great options. The Middle East and Asia also have plenty of fantastic choices with both cities and beach areas being possible on the same trip. We’ve added more information about which destinations have the best deals on all-inclusive resorts and included prices for those as well, and there are some really good deals out there in March of 2024. Hotels in many places on the list below went up in price over last year, but a surprising number of them actually came down in price and those are all noted so you can look for places that are bargains in 2024.

Important March global holidays in 2024

  • March 17 – St. Patrick’s Day (Mostly USA and Ireland)
  • March 19 – St. Joseph’s Day (public holiday in Switzerland, parts of Spain, and a few other places)
  • March 24, 25 – Holi and Holika Dahan (Large and colorful celebrations in India)
  • March 31 – Easter (Major holiday in most Western countries)

Video showing most of the places below

I recently started making Youtube videos out of the popular articles on this site so you can both read about the different options and see actual footage of them as well. Below is a video with highlights of the best places to visit in March and April.

The Americas

With the United States and Canada either being frozen or expensive (south Florida) this time of year, you’ll want to head to Latin America or the Caribbean for the best bargains with sunny and warm weather.

The Caribbean

Easter Week is March 24 to 31 in 2024 and those are popular dates in the Caribbean, but the two weeks before that are also popular for Spring Breakers from North Americans schools, so the whole month is going to be reasonably crowded in 2024.

Cancun is one of the best places to travel in March because the airport is the busiest in the entire region so it has more direct flights in from key hubs in North America and Europe than any other destination nearby. This keeps flights cheaper than to most islands, and easier to find as well. There are also some good all-inclusive resorts in the Cancun area, though they don’t offer quite the great value that those in Punta Cana (below) do.

Since Cancun is so popular and such a large area I have put together a guide to choosing where to stay in the Cancun area , which should be helpful. There are 7 different areas to choose from and depending on your tastes, some are much better than others. The room rates quoted below are for the Downtown Cancun area, which does actually have some small resorts with rooftop pools and such along with good restaurants and affordable nightlife. The other areas are at least a bit more expensive, and many are MUCH more expensive.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$36 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: US$112 per night for two people
  • 4-star all-inclusive hotels from: US$222 per night for two people

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

  • March avg high: 85°F/29°C
  • March avg low: 72°F/22°C
  • March avg precip: 1.0″/2.5cm

travel somewhere warm in march

The resort hotels along the stretch of Punta Cana beaches tend to be large, with many having well over 500 rooms to go along with multiple pools and extensive recreational facilities. Many resorts here are also very family oriented so they could be ideal for a holiday with the kids or even the extended family. Flights into the Punta Cana airport are also among the cheaper fares into the Caribbean, with many direct flights from large hubs, so this is a good choice for many types of travelers.

Honestly, the best deals in Punta Cana are at the all-inclusive hotels, many of which are run by large Spanish resort chains. Even in March you can find places starting around US$200 per night for two people, including tax. If you don’t drink alcohol you can save a bit at one of the resorts that only includes breakfast, but the all-inclusive places are so efficient that you won’t save much anyway. We also rank Punta Cana tops on our list of the best family-friendly destinations in the Caribbean for kids .

Montego Bay, Jamaica

  • March avg precip: 0.8″/2.0cm

travel somewhere warm in march

If Montego Bay itself doesn’t sound perfect then you might instead consider  Negril  or  Ocho Rios , both of which are about 90 minutes from the same airport and each has a different feel. All combined there are about 500 hotels to choose from, including many all-inclusives, so it can be worth checking each of the 3 areas (that are all served by the same airport) and picking the deal that suits you best. If you want to stay in a large resort then the northern coast can be a great choice, but if you want to stay in a smaller hotel and sample some Jamaican culture, then Negril is by far the best choice of the three.

Even though Cabo is in the Tropics, the March weather is still fairly mild. The days are pleasantly warm and perfect for the beach, while the evenings are a bit chilly and you’ll want to bring a jacket or sweater. This is perfect for those of us who don’t like to sweat in the tropical evenings in the Caribbean.

If you are interested in shopping and the party scene then you’ll feel most at home near the marina in Cabo San Lucas, but if you want something quiet on an uncrowded beach, you’ll be better off almost anywhere else in the area.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

  • March avg low: 62°F/17°C
  • March avg precip: 0.1″/0.3cm

travel somewhere warm in march

Among the great things about Puerto Vallarta is that it has a real historic town at its core so there are good sights, interesting restaurants, and great shopping there. Hotels are spread all up and down the coast, with a new area of posh hotels well north of the airport. As you can see by the hotel prices below, there is a huge difference between a 3-star, which is often an older traditional hotel, and a 4-star, which is usually a modern chain hotel on its own section of beach. The area has an increasing number of fully all-inclusive hotels as well, some starting at very affordable rates. The Puerto Vallarta area is fun to explore and generally very safe, but all-inclusive resorts can be a great choice for many travelers as well.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$44 per night for two people

Belize is definitely one of the  cheapest Caribbean destinations , and the offshore islands actually do have quite a Caribbean feel in spite of being surrounded by Latin America. There are wonderful resorts here for those willing to spend more, but even the cheaper hotels are decent, and very good bargains even in high season.

Guanacaste, Costa Rica

  • March avg high: 96°F/36°C
  • March avg precip: 0.2″/0.5cm

travel somewhere warm in march

Hotels here run the gamut of prices, from simple and traditional beach shacks all the way up to posh chain hotels with all the luxuries. You don’t have to spend much to enjoy the friendly towns and great March weather, but the top places are good value even at the higher rates. Like so many other places, you pretty much get what you pay for in Guanacaste. In other words, a US$200 per night resort is going to be WAY nicer than a US$95 per night hotel a couple blocks inland. The area now has quite a few all-inclusive resorts at very tempting prices, although rates seem quite high in March, 2024 for some reason.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$67 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: US$190 per night for two people
  • 4-star all-inclusive hotels from: US$522 per night for two people

The food, the nightlife, and the shopping are other great reasons to visit Mexico City at any time of year. Perhaps best of all, it’s all very cheap compared to most of Latin America so you can afford to splurge a bit while still keeping costs down. If you know how to speak at least some Spanish you’ll be even better off because English isn’t widely spoken outside of larger hotels and restaurants. Hotel rates in March of 2024 are looking very reasonable so this could be a great year to visit.

Cartagena, Colombia

travel somewhere warm in march

Another key feature about this city is that it’s a cultural destination in addition to being a great beach spot so you can explore the historic city center and include some culture on an otherwise hedonistic getaway. The beaches in the city aren’t the fluffy white sand you might dream about, but there is so much to see and do in this place that you might not notice. As long as you can get an affordable flight, Cartagena could be the cheapest beach destination in the Caribbean, at least as long as you don’t need a high-rise hotel on the sand. There are some really nice all-inclusive resorts at good prices, but overall Punta Cana is similar in price and probably better value.

Most people who visit Lima from far away will do it as part of a tour of South America, and in that context it’s a great stop for at least a few days. By the way, the rainy season in  Cusco  goes on in March, so the trails can sometimes be cut off, although many people go anyway. Hotels in March of 2024 are great bargains compared to previous years so this could be a great time to include Peru in a trip of South America.

As of late 2023, Argentina is once again in the throes of a financial and currency crisis with prices shooting up and the currency going down by just as much every month. The great news for international visitors is that Buenos Aires is now insanely cheap, especially if you bring US currency or Euros and exchange money at the “Blue dollar” when you arrive. It sounds sketchy but it’s actually just part of life in Argentina these days. Still, do some research on changing money at the blue rate and you’ll be in for one of the cheapest holidays of your life.

Bariloche, Argentina

  • March avg high: 66°F/19°C
  • March avg low: 39°F/4°C

Bariloche is also unusual in that it was once a German community and there are still many chocolate shops around town as a reminder. The value here is excellent and it will provide a nice contrast from your other stops in South America.

You might also consider including  Mendoza  on your trip, which is the main wine region of Argentina, and also good value. A short side trip (by air) to Iguazu Falls can be wonderful if you’ve got at least two extra days. Nominal hotel rates in 2024 are looking pretty high in March so remember that if you pay in cash after you’ve exchanged it in Argentina you can basically be paying half the prices mentioned below.

  • 4-star hotels from: US$167 per night for two people

Rio de Janeiro seems a bit cheaper in 2024 than it had been in the last few years as hotel deals seem easy to find. Budget travelers can still do well here if they stay inland from the beaches or even in the city center area, but those who want to participate in the good life in Copacabana and Ipanema most days will be paying more for it. On the other hand, petty crime is an issue in this city and tourists can be targeted so do a bit of research and be alert in order to stay safe.

From November through March there are literally no European cities that could qualify as having “great weather,” except for the Canary Islands, mentioned just below. So during the winter Europe is all about cultural tourism, and lower hotel prices make it especially appealing for those who like to stretch their travel budgets and avoid crowds at the same time.

Compared to Europe this island is a relative bargain, which helps make it popular pretty much all year round. Needless to say, prices can range quite a bit from one part of the island to another so it’s good to stay somewhere central if possible so you have the most options for food and drink. Most of the crowd in March will be retired refugees escaping the late winter from northern Europe, so don’t expect much nightlife.

There are amazing numbers of hotels in Marrakech and it’s good to be aware that the bottom price level will usually be for something that is very shabby by European standards so many will want to pay a bit more for something nicer. Still, things tend to be cheap in all of Morocco so it’s a good overall destination.

When Egypt is struggling to attract tourists you might find that you can get a fantastic deal at a 3- or 4-star hotel, since they tend to lower prices when demand is weak while the cheaper places generally hold steady. Food tends to be very cheap in Cairo as well, as long as you avoid the restaurants in those fancy hotels.

Many people add a trip to Sharm el-Sheikh to a visit to Cairo, but more people are just skipping the chaos of Cairo and coming here instead. This is an area that is known for amazing value beach resorts along with diving and other activities. You won’t find a better beach hotel deal anywhere. Sharm had totally fallen out of fashion with non-Egyptian visitors for a couple years after a mysterious plane crash, but now the crowds are back and prices are close to normal for this bargain beach destination.

Cape Town is relatively cheap once you get there, so the main problem for most people is that it’s quite expensive to fly in. Since most people coming from longer distances tend to combine Cape Town with a safari or other activities then the airfare can still be worthwhile for a longer visit, even if it’s too expensive to just pop down for a few days.

Middle East

March is cool and even a bit rainy in most of the Middle East. An exception is  Dubai  and  Abu Dhabi , which both have perfect sunny weather. However, Abu Dhabi isn’t cheap enough to make the cut, and Dubai is below.

  • March avg high: 83°F/28°C

Hotels and restaurants in Dubai can be found in a very wide range of prices. Many independent hotels offer great value, including the many that are nightly apartment rentals rather than small hotel rooms. And finding cheap restaurants is easy as long as you follow the locals rather than the other tourists. Alcohol is extremely expensive in bars, which are only attached to hotels. Those who like a drink should consider stopping at the famous Dubai Duty Free on the way in, where you can buy two liters at low prices.

March is a good month to visit many parts of Asia, although some cities like Bangkok, Saigon, and Siem Reap are already too hot during the day for most people. Those looking for hot countries in March will find plenty to choose from in Southeast Asia.

Phuket, Thailand

  • March avg high: 92°F/33°C
  • March avg low: 76°F/24°C

Phuket is quite a large island with many different beaches on its edges, most of which are quite expensive and lined with posh resorts, so if you are on a low budget you are going to have to choose a beach carefully or even stay in Phuket Town, which is inland. Still, food and drink prices are quite low and it’s a fun place if you find the right area for your style. In 2024 we are seeing many hotel bargains so you should at least be able to find something decent a few blocks or more in the Patong Beach area, which is very central with plenty of cheap food options as well.

Boracay Island, Philippines

  • March average high: 86°F/30°C
  • March average low: 76°F/24°C
  • March avg precip: 1.8″/4.5cm

travel somewhere warm in march

One thing that Boracay Island lacks is super-cheap hotels, but many people prefer to NOT have the backpacker crowd mixed in. Still, hotel value is excellent, especially considering that pretty much every hotel on the island is within a 2-minute walk of the sand, or it’s up in the hills with gorgeous views. Those looking for a new place to relax in March should consider Boracay, at least until it really catches on in a few years. The whole island was closed to tourists for half of 2018 to repair the infrastructure, so it is in much better shape now.

Pokhara, Nepal

  • March avg low: 50°F/10°C
  • March avg precip: 1.2″/3.0cm

travel somewhere warm in march

Hotels in Pokhara are incredibly cheap by most standards, and they’ve built so many new ones that prices are likely to stay low for years to come. Food and drinks are also very good deals here so it’s a great place to chill out for a while. The trekking tours can be expensive, however, so if you want to go on multi-day trips with guides you are going to spend a decent chunk of money compared to just staying in town.

Chiang Mai, Thailand

  • March avg high: 95°F/35°C
  • March avg low: 65°F/18°C
  • March avg precip: 0.5″/1.3cm

travel somewhere warm in march

Chiang Mai is one of the world’s great budget destinations, especially with its hotels but also with its food, drinks, and shopping. It’s very popular for those spending a month or more in the region because it’s much less hectic than Bangkok or other big cities while being cheaper as well. Hotels here are cheap, even those with pools, and Airbnbs can be cheap as well, especially for longer stays. There is a large English-speaking community here that is based mostly just northwest of the city walls.

Some cities, such as Anjuna and Vagator, are better for the budget crowd and the nightlife crowd, while other beaches further south specialize more in package hotels in the mid range. You can get by on very little in this area if you need to, but paying more will often get you much better quality that’s worth it. The cheaper hotels in Goa (and all over India) tend to be very disappointing, so it’s almost always better to splurge a bit and get something with consistent very good reviews.

Luang Prabang, Laos

  • March avg precip: 1.3″/3.3cm

travel somewhere warm in march

March is still part of the high season for hotels in Luang Prabang, and accommodation here isn’t as cheap as it is in many other tourist cities in the region, but it’s still quite cheap by most other standards. Affordable food and drink are also easy to find if you look around a bit, so don’t just go into the first place you see if you are trying to save money here.

If you’ve been following the news you’ll know that Hong Kong has huge protests starting in 2020 and the mainland China government cracked down and accelerated the process of integrating it into the country. Many people have fled Hong Kong since they started enforcing some laws arbitrarily to intimidate those who wanted Hong Kong to be independent. It’s not the same fun-loving city that it was a few years ago, but Hong Kong is still an amazing place and it’s up to each potential visitor to decide whether to come or not.

27 Cheap Destinations For 2024 With Great Weather in March " --> All Comments

Hi, I’m trying to go to Egypt at the end of March (anytime between the 19th-31st). When do you think is the best time I can find the best airfare prices? I’m traveling from the US. Thanks!

' src=

For longer flights like the US to Cairo it seems that the cheapest fares are earlier than they used to be. In other words, most likely the fares you’ll see right now for March flights will be close to the minimum and they will stay around the same price until December or January, when they are likely to start creeping up. I’d recommend doing a fare alert on kayak or airfarewatchdog and they can email you if the fare goes down for your dates. If it doesn’t go down between now and late November I would think about buying anyway. I hope this helps. -Roger

10 Best Warm Places to Travel to This Winter

Escape the chill in these warm-weather destinations.

travel somewhere warm in march

Sure, the winter months have their perks – skiing, sledding, snowman building, and of course the holidays. But the cold! Oh, the cold. It digs deep under your skin, straight to your bones, chilling everything from your toes to your chattering teeth. Fortunately, several year-round, warm-weather destinations can offer a much-needed respite from the frigid air.

From island getaways to sizzling cities, here are 10 of the best warm places to visit this winter.

Ambergris Caye, Belize

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

With direct flights from several U.S. cities (including New York, Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, and Miami), getting to the Central American nation of Belize is easier than you think. The country's interior is filled with lush, verdant landscapes home to monkeys and even a few rare jaguars, but the real star is the coast. To experience the white-sand beaches at their best, make your way to Ambergris Caye. Belize's largest island is known for its water sports, including diving and snorkeling around the nearby Belize Barrier Reef. For a luxe visit, book a few nights at Alaia Belize , which not only provides easy access to the beach, but also has a swimming pool suspended six stories above the main access corridor, with portholes in the bottom that offer aerial views of the property.

Mexico City

Jorge Castro/Travel + Leisure

Though winter in CDMX won't have the tropical heat you might expect from Mexico — temperatures tend to top out in the low 70s this time of year — it still provides a balmy alternative to snowy U.S. locales. The capital is flush with cultural attractions , including first-rate museums (like the stunning Museo Frida Kahlo ), incredible shopping at both high-end stores and local markets, and some of the best restaurants in the world (we're looking at you, Pujol ). Make Las Alcobas your home base. The luxury hotel offers lavish guest rooms and a tranquil spa in which to relax after a day of urban exploration.

Key West, Florida

Key West is a true delight in the winter months, as the average high temperature never really falls below 75 degrees. It's the perfect place for fruity cocktails on the sand, sunset strolls down lively shopping streets, and slice after slice of tangy Key lime pie. Make the most of your time here by booking a stay at the historic Casa Marina Key West , which recently underwent an extensive renovation. Through the hotel, you can book local food tours, golf outings, and sailboat cruises, or you can simply sit by the pool and soak in the Florida Keys sun.

Rangiroa, French Polynesia

Though more than a hundred islands comprise French Polynesia , just a handful (think Bora Bora and Moorea) get most of the attention. If you prefer somewhere a little less crowded, try the quiet, sparsely developed atoll of Rangiroa. Located about an hour's flight from Tahiti, it has pristine beaches and a massive lagoon brimming with sea life. Book the Hotel Kia Ora Resort & Spa , which boasts stunning overwater bungalows and villas with private plunge pools.

Panama Highlands

Panama is another destination with splendid coastlines, but its interior shouldn't be overlooked, especially for a winter vacation. Temperatures in the country's highlands sit in the 60s and 70s year round, creating ideal conditions for outdoor adventures. Visitor-favorite activities here include bird-watching and, for more adventurous types, criss-crossing the verdant mountains via the famous hanging bridges of Boquete. The region also has a stellar coffee scene worth exploring. Book a stay at The Haven , an adults-only wellness hotel that'll help you get on a coffee tour as soon as you land.

If you're seeking an African safari this winter without the crowds of a classic destination like Kenya, try the less-traveled terrain of Namibia . This nation on Africa's southwest coast offers seclusion, otherworldly landscapes, and near-guaranteed warm weather. It's also the perfect place to see animals like lions, elephants, leopards, and rhinos in their natural environment. There are several outfitters in the area, but Natural Selection is top-notch. It has numerous camps to choose from, including the famed Shipwreck Lodge on the Skeleton Coast.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

If you want to mix some time under the sun with some cultural enrichment, look no further than San Juan. The capital of Puerto Rico has long stretches of white-sand beaches, plus historical attractions like the Castillo San Felipe del Morro. Visitors will also find lots of delicious spots to eat (make reservations at Cocina Abierta ). In San Juan, it's best to go boutique, so check into the O:LV Fifty Five hotel, which features a rooftop bar and pool offering the best views in town.

When the first cold snap hits, book your flight to Dubai. This desert oasis offers not just warm weather but a mind-boggling array of things to do, from swimming in the Persian Gulf to shopping at some of the world's most luxurious stores and dining at multiple Michelin-starred restaurants. (Don't forget to visit the tallest building in the world while you're here, via an elevator that travels at an ear-popping 30 feet per second.) Try Atlantis, The Palm for your overnight stays — it's a veritable playground for those looking to indulge in the finer things in life.

Winter happens to be the best time to visit Bangkok . The weather is balmy year-round thanks to Thailand's tropical location, but the winter months offer slightly more comfortable temperatures, with highs rarely exceeding 90 degrees.

To get the most out of this massive city, it's best to book a lengthy visit or get a guide — there are tons of tour options on sites like Airbnb Experiences that focus on food, culture, and photography. Don't miss out on the city's canals, either, which you can tour on a long-tail boat. Make your home base the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok , a long-running honoree in Travel + Leisure 's World's Best Awards.

The Bahamas

Sometimes, you just need to get away and not think about a single thing. And that's exactly what you can do in the Bahamas, an island chain that's just a three-hour flight from New York City. There are a number of beautiful destinations to see here, and many of the archipelago's inhabited islands are home to some of the best all-inclusive resorts that are ideal for families, couples, and even solo travelers.
