A beautiful discovery, old-fashioned cobblestone streets, very typical market and local products that make you want to taste and buy everything… We visited the hospice and the patriarch’s cellars. Eggs meurette, beef bourguignon… A delicacy… I want to do it again!

Antonin, our guide, was very attentive. He knows his stuff very well and showed us some magical places, especially during the harvest period! He pampered us without overdoing it! Best Wineries to Visit in Burgundy in 2024

Burgundy is a popular destination among our wine-loving travelers - understandably! Indeed, we’re often asked which are the best wineries to visit in Burgundy and other regions. We work with some of the very best wine estates in Burgundy (in our view) and some of them are not easily accessible for non French-speaking tourists. 

We therefore strongly recommend visiting Burgundy wineries with an English-speaking wine guide. They will be able to open the door to many wine estates you wouldn’t discover on your own – and you’ll have the best experience of this important part of French culture!

First, a short introduction to Burgundy wines, before we share a few of our favorite vineyards and wineries in Burgundy.

Burgundy wines

When it comes to Burgundy wines, there are many famous ones. These include:

• Nuits-Saint-Georges
• Gevrey Chambertin
• Vosne Romanée – Romanée Conti is one of the most expensive wines in the world

The wines are named after the regions or towns in Burgundy where the grapes are from.

First of all, be warned that Burgundy wines are by far the most expensive wines in France. This includes regular wines as well as special vintages. Furthermore, the prices do not necessarily reflect the quality of the wine. Therefore, if you want to buy some, be sure to ask to taste it first.

Burgundy wines are normally kept for maturing. This means that if you buy a bottle of a recent vintage (from 2019 or 2020), which will cost around €20, it won’t necessarily be good to drink right away. If you want a bottle of Burgundy you can enjoy soon, you’ll need an older vintage, which will normally cost between €30-60 per bottle.

These are a few wineries that we recommend to our travelers who book one of our tours of Burgundy, France :

Caves de l'Abbaye, Beaune

The beautiful town of Beaune is the Burgundy wine capital. It's surrounded by the most famous Burgundy vineyards and wine villages. However, Beaune offers much more than its incredible wine! You'll see this as you stroll around and marvel at the gorgeous and varied architecture. The town is a blend of different architectural eras, spanning across Roman times, medieval times, through to the Renaissance and up to the modern age.

• The main sites to visit in Beaune are:
• The stunning Hospices de Beaune with its gorgeous colored roof
• Les Halles, the food market
• The Beffroi de Beaune clocktower 
• The Basilica Notre Dame

Back to the wine: there are so many wine cellars and wine-tasting tours in Beaune that we try to avoid the busiest tourist traps. We only recommend wineries that we've tried ourselves and that meet the high standards we want to offer to our travelers.

The Caves de l'Abbaye wine cellar is one of our favorites. It's open every day from 9-6pm during the high season, and closed on Sundays and Mondays during the rest of the year. If you’re interested in taking the wine-tasting class, we recommend booking in advance by emailing [email protected] .

The owner, Guillaume Grandin, is an expert who has worked in the wine industry for many years, from wine-making to wine-selling. He is extremely knowledgeable about wines from all over France. If you visit his beautiful vaulted cellar, you’ll be able to see some amazing bottles of wine from Chateauneuf du Pape and the Loire Valley.

The wine-tasting class includes five wines, including a commentary on each one. It lasts for 1-2 hours and costs €30-95 per person (for quality wines). Alternatively, you can book a tasting lunch, which includes a start, main course, cheese platter, coffee and a selection of 3-5 wines. Or you could just hang out in the cellar and enjoy a glass of wine with a cheese platter.

Château de Santenay, Santenay

Santenay is the most southerly of the Côte de Beaune wine-producing villages. The wines produced in this part of the region are mainly red and Pinot Noir, with a small quantity of Chardonnay too.

The Château de Santenay winery is a great place to enjoy everything Burgundy has to offer: wine, scenery and gorgeous medieval tiled roofs. It has very recently been renamed ‘Château Philippe le Hardi’, after one of its famous owners, Philippe le Hardi, a former Duke of Burgundy. It is now owned by the Crédit Agricole Group (a French bank), and the castle’s vineyards cover 98 hectares in a dozen appellations. A third of the wines produced are white and two thirds are red.

You can book a guided tour and tasting online . At the time of writing, the owners are updating the website and moving to a new web domain - http://www.philippelehardi.com - but currently the old domain (www.chateau-de-santenay.com) is still working.

Wine tastings cost between €10-55 depending on the wine. They’re open Monday-Saturday from 10.00-12.30 and 13.30-17.30.

Simonnet-Febvre, Chablis

Chablis is a small town located on the Serein river and in itself is not particularly special. The historic center of Chablis was destroyed by bombing during WWII. The interesting structures that remain include:

• The medieval Collegiate Church of Saint Martin
• The 19th century wash house ( lavoir ) with its nine arches, formerly a communal place for washing clothes
• The Christmas Gate and its two round towers 
• The old 9th century Obédiencerie monastery, where Chablis was born.

If you’re a wine-lover, you’ll know that Chablis is the place to try one of the world’s most famous wines. The town is surrounded by 4,800 hectares of vineyards solely dedicated to the Chardonnay grape variety.

If you would like to taste some Chablis wines, we recommend Simmonet-Febvre winery. It is open from Tuesday to Saturday 10.00-13.00 and 14.30-18.30  If you would like a guided tour of the vaulted cellars and a tasting in English, be sure to book a few days ahead. The tastings cost around 10 euros per person.

Cité de la Gastronomie et du Vin, Dijon

Dijon, the capital of Burgundy and well-known for its eponymous mustard, has changed a lot over the last few years. It’s more dynamic, with a lively student vibe, and many of the historic and architectural features have been restored.

In 2022, the Cité International de la Gastronomie et du Vin (the International City of Gastronomy and Wine) opened, and is now open everyday from 9:30am - 7pm. The site was an old hospital, covers 16 acres and offers visitors many ways to experience the 'French gastronomic meal'.

There are top restaurants offering haute cuisine, counters where you can buy small traditional dishes, and the Cité's centerpiece - the gastronomic village. Part market, part gastronomic exhibition, you'll find food and drink producers from all over France demonstrating, talking and cooking.

The Cité’s wine bar is a wine-lover's dream - there are 3,000 bottles of wine from Burgundy and beyond! 250 of those are sold by the glass, costing from just a few euros to a whole lot more for wines you may never encounter again.

Here it’s an ‘automated wine-tasting’ experience. You simply buy a card, add some money to it, and taste to your heart’s content!

Too bad LeMans track was not open for viewing(had a truck race that nite, so is closed to visitors). But museum was awesome. All her chosen accommodations were wonderful & it saved me tons of hours of research. She arranged our day to day visits and was extremely flexible & enabled me to drive the 1200 miles in an efficient manner. That was very important to me, as I prefer to travel alone with my wife rather than a group, and our journey was as smoothe as a Swiss timepiece. Let Burgundy surprise you!

Burgundy has long been known as a place of artistic and historical interest, famous for its Romanesque heritage and exceptional wines, but it also holds many surprises.

A region where history and gastronomy unite

Wine routes take you through the wine-growing areas of Nuits-Saint-Georges and Chablis , by way of the Côtes de Beaune or Pouilly-Fuissé . Renaissance châteaux and medieval castles stand tall amongst the vineyards: Ancy-le-Franc, Bazoches, Sully or Châteauneuf-en-Auxois . If you fancy something really different, take a trip to the Puisaye and visit Guédelon where a medieval castle is being constructed using nothing but period techniques.

From the fortifications at Bibracte to the temple of Janus in Autun, a number of historical treasures bear witness to the region’s influence over the centuries. In Cluny, Vézelay, La Charité-sur Loire and Fontenay, you can contemplate the spiritual heritage of the Cluniac and Cistercian orders. In the region’s historic capital, Dijon , take time to admire the glazed tile roofs and Ducal Palace.

Whether on holiday or just passing through, be sure to savor a gourmet meal in a Michelin starred restaurant. Try out some of the local specialties such as Charolais beef , snails, Bresse chicken or the famous Dijon mustard .

Land of adventure

Burgundy offers the very best in river tourism, having the largest network of inland waterways in France. Sail along the renowned Canal de Bourgogne or take a trip on the Canal du Nivernais where you can admire the ingenious series of locks known as the “échelle de Sardy.”

There are many different bike paths offered on the “voies vertes.” Along five different routes, from the banks of the Yonne to those of the Saône, guesthouses and hotels with the Tour de Bourgogne à Vélo © quality label pull out all the stops for touring cyclists. Freewheel to the spa town of Bourbon-Lancy in the Saône-et-Loire , the Renaissance châteaux of Tanlay in the Yonne and Cormatin in the Mâconnais, or take time to explore the Romantic poet Lamartine’s house in Milly .

Thrill seekers can try driving on the legendary race track at Magny-Cours or night time bungee jumping at the grotte de Champ-Retard in the Yonne. After, if you are in need of somewhere peaceful yet unusual to stay, check out a gypsy caravan, yurt or house boat. You can even spend the night in a tree-top hammock amidst the rivers and lakes of the Morvan!

Mention Burgundy – or Bourgogne as the French call this enticing chunk of la belle France – and whittling away hours sipping velvety reds and aromatic whites spring to mind. But there is far more to the nation’s premier wine-producing region than savoring prestigious vintages between vines or reveling in cloud wine over gourmet lunch pairings. 

Handsome towns, Instagram-star medieval villages and ancient abbatial communities begging slow exploration pepper this predominantly rural region. To navigate Burgundy’s natural green labyrinth of emerald vineyards, shimmering mustard fields and dense dark forests, plug these ‘best places to visit’ into your device and hit go.

Explore Burgundy’s capital

Best city for art and architecture.

Multi-colored patterned tiled roofs have been a status symbol in Burgundy since the 13th century and craning your neck upwards to gorge on the shiny tapestry of zig-zags. diamonds and other geometrical motifs crafted in ceramic-glazed terracotta is a Dijon highlight. Signature rooftops aside, the regional capital overflows with striking medieval and Renaissance architecture. Municipal museums offer free admission and one of France’s best fine-arts museums languishes inside the monumental Gothic-to-Classical palace where Charles the Bold and other Burgundy dukes partied in their heyday. For a city overview, scale the neighboring Tour Philippe Le Bon .

Visitors with a penchant for contemporary architecture, or food, or wine, or all three, won’t be able to resist Dijon’s ground-breaking Cité Internationale du Vin et de la Gastronomie (International City of Wine and Gastronomy), opening in a former 13th-century orphanage and later hospital in Spring 2022.

Be beau in Beaune

Best wine town.

Burgundian wine culture seeps out of every handsome nook and cranny in Beaune , a celebrated wine town in the vineyard-carpeted Côte d’Or, even more beau (beautiful) than its name suggests. The centerpiece Hôtel-Dieu des Hospices de Beaune , created as a charity hospital in 1443, is a Gothic architectural masterpiece. Its dazzling polychrome tiled roof alone is enough to stop you in your tracks and drool, while some of the world's most expensive wines repose in its wine cellars.

The entire town feels like a living wine cellar in fact, with winetasting and cellar-tour options galore: the informative Maison des Climats is an excellent introduction. Watch for the much-anticipated opening of the Cité des Vins et de Climats de Bourgogne – split across wine towns Beaune, Chablis and Mâcon – in summer 2022. Beaune’s other ‘Don’t Miss!’ is a poke around Burgundy’s last remaining, family-run mustard maker where mustard seeds are milled by stone to make Real McCoy, Dijon AOP mustard.

Time-travel in Pays d’Axois

Best region for hilltop villages.

West of Dijon, the picturesque towpaths of the Canal de Bourgogne meander into Pays d'Auxois. An unspoiled honeypot of uber-pretty hilltop villages, this rolling land of mustard fields and wooded hills begs a road trip – on foot, by bicycle, e-bike or four wheels. King of ‘les plus beaux villages’ (the most beautiful villages) is fortified hilltop Semur-en-Auxois, teetering on a granite spur in a hairpin bend of the meandering Armançon River. Châteauneuf-en-Auxois is another gorgeous spot to get lost in a cobweb of cobbled lanes laced with attractive houses.

Tucked into this verdant landscape is a twinset of exceptional historical sites: the tranquil, end-of-the-road Cistercian abbey of Fontenay (a Unesco World Heritage site no less) and the sensational MuséoParc Alésia , located on the very spot where Julius Caesar defeated Vercingétorix, chief of the Gauls, in 52 BCE.

Feel sweet in Flavigny

Best village for epicureans.

Visiting the family-run Anis de Flavigny sweet factory in the quaint village of Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, a one-hour drive northeast of Dijon, is as much about lifting the lid on a centuries-old epicurean tradition as stuffing yourself silly with the hard-boiled, aniseed-flavored bonbons (sweets) for which the abbatial village is famed.

First crafted by Benedictine monks at 16th-century Abbaye de Flavigny in 1591, Les Anis de Flavigny still has its HQ at the abbey. The traditional sweet-making process, using natural ingredients (aniseed, beet sugar, plant extracts) remains unchanged. Fascinating guided visits explore the abbey’s Carolingian crypt and chapels, vaulted halls where the sweets were crafted in the 19th century, an interactive ‘laboratory of aromas’, and a museum displaying the sweet’s gorgeous trademark tins and packaging over the centuries. Tasting throughout is a given.

Catch the sunset in Noyers

Best village for a medieval vibe.

Watching the sun sink below the medieval battlements of the multi-turreted, walled village of Noyers-sur-Surein, 30km (18.6mi) southeast of Auxerre, is pure romance à la française. Nineteen of its original 23 defensive towers from the 13th century still stand and the enchanting cobbled lanes, gabled houses and archways ensnared within its ancient stone ramparts are straight off a movie set.

Mooch between art galleries and artisan workshops selling handcrafted leather accessories or illuminated parchments penned in vintage quill. In July catch a music recital in the church. Lunch on traditional Burgundian coq au vin and jambon au Chablis (wine-infused ham) at Les Millésimes or vegetarian at La Vieille Tour . End on a natural high with a walk from outside the clock-topped southern gate to Noyers’ ruined hilltop chateau: the bird’s eye view of rolling pastureland, wooded hills and the River Serein dancing below is spectacular.

Go green in Morvan

Best park for outdoor action.

When urban monuments and museums begin to exhaust, throw yourself into green Burgundy in its serene Parc Naturel Régional du Morvan. Brimming with flora, fauna and fantastic wildlife, this nature park is the place to take your foot off the pedal and slow right down in woodlands, lakes, farmland and frolicking hills. Begin in the main village, St-Brisson, where a scattering of small, well-considered eco-museums raise the curtain on local traditions, customs and landscapes.

The Maison du Parc in St-Brisson has all the gen on running wild in Morvan’s protected 3220 sq km (1243 sq mi). Hike, mountain bike, saddle up on horseback, try your hand at orienteering or fish for trout in the park’s smattering of lakes and rivers. Owl spotting tours after dark and boat trips on Lac des Settons are family favorites, as is a day out at the ancient Gaul-meets-modern-Burgundy, archeological site of Bibracte .

Get spiritual in Vézelay

Best village for mindful moments.

Follow pilgrims to Vézelay, a honeypot hilltop village of teeny doll-house proportions and Unesco world heritage. One of the main routes to Santiago de Compostela in Spain begins on the steep cobbled lanes here and that first heady glance of medieval Basilique Ste-Madeleine teetering on a rocky spur is enough to reboot faith in the most jaded of souls.

To escape the crowds, hit the signposted trail hidden behind the basilica to Chapelle Ste-Croix , nicknamed 'La Cordelle' after the rope belts of Franciscan monks who adopted this spot in the 13th century. The beautiful stone chapel, cloaked in climbing grapevines, was built to commemorate Bernard de Clairvaux' preaching of the Second Crusade here in 1146. It is a sublime place today for peaceful meditation in the deep Burgundian countryside.

Find Colette in La Puisaye

Best region for literary heritage.

French literature fans will enjoy the off-the-beaten-track journey in La Puisaye, a rural idyll of woods, winding creeks, canals and dark hills, 40 km (25mi) southwest of Auxerre. The area is best known as the birthplace of French writer Colette (1873–1954), author of La Maison de Claudine and Gigi and 50 other novels. Much of her work explores her rural Burgundian childhood, beautifully evoked in the Musée Colette , at home – as the enviably stylish French do so effortlessly well – in the village chateau in St-Saveur-en-Puisaye.

While you’re here, it would be remiss not to nip 7 km (4.3mi) south to Chantier Médiéval de Guédelon , an intriguing building site where artisans are rebuilding – as one does – a fortified castle using only 13th-century building techniques.

Wine 101: Burgundy Part V: Hardships and Silver Linings

When Burgundy transformed into the Burgundian state under the Dukes , Charles the Rash expanded the state all the way up into Flanders. The action was one that angered the French king, and the state of Burgundy was, once again, taken over by French royalty. However, by this point, the French Renaissance was well under way, and the churches, monks, and monasteries faded away in importance. As the nobility rose, many of the vineyards once owned by these religious groups were sold off to the upper classes of Dijon.

Then comes Louis XIV, and he falls in love with the white wines of Mâcon, leading to the establishment of roads to open trade routes between Burgundy and other parts of France. As a result of this commercial prosperity, we begin to see the development of négociant houses in the 1720s and 1730s, many of which are still in business today. Terroir and single-vineyard wines became the darling of the region, but powdery mildew and phylloxera were on the horizon, and Burgundy had a great deal of replanting to do before the region returned to prominence in the 20th century.
