The price of gas may go up or down, but it's always a major expense for most drivers. The average American driver spends about $3,000 per year on gas, according to the American Automobile Association. Some of the practical ways to reduce fuel costs are listed below.

Use public transportation

Walking or biking does not consume fuel, and as such does not accumulate fuel cost. In most cases, public transport alternatives to cars such as buses, trains, and trolleys are viable options of reducing fuel costs. Due to the communal nature of ride sharing, the fuel costs of operating public transport are generally less than the fuel costs associated with each individual operating their own vehicle. In some places, public transport is free. Considering the costs associated with owning or renting a car creates even more incentive to use other modes of transportation.

Also known as car sharing, carpooling is the arrangement between two or more people to travel to a shared destination in a single vehicle. Although a heavier car consumes slightly more fuel, it is usually much more efficient than two people driving separate cars towards the same destination.

Use a more fuel efficient vehicle

Driving a smaller car makes a great difference – the fuel cost is about half for a small sedan than for a very large SUV. Similarly, drive with a less powerful engine than you need. Don't pay for an eight-cylinder engine when four cylinders work just fine. Unless you're hauling heavy loads on a routine basis, the extra cost of a bigger engine results in more money spent on gasoline.

Tune the engine

A properly tuned engine maximizes power and can greatly enhance fuel efficiency. But tuning the car engine is often done to increase horsepower – that's not the way to save on fuel. Make sure the tuner gets the message.

Fixing a car that is noticeably out of tune or has failed an emissions test can improve its gas mileage by an average of 4 percent – this amount will vary depending on the nature of the repair.

Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve your mileage by as much as 40 percent.

Placing ornaments and ground effects, aerodynamics kits, and airfoils, such as deck-lid spoilers, may make you feel good, but they also increase the car's drag and make it require more fuel. Such accessories offer no real handling enhancements, although they may look nice on your car. Also, place signs or cargo on the roof so that the object angles forward. This will reduce the frontal area of the object, and it will cause less drag, and cause you to use less fuel.

Adjust tires

Make sure the tires are inflated to the right levels. Properly inflated tires can reduce fuel consumption by up to 3 percent. Your tires also lose about 1 PSI per month, and when the tires are cold (e.g., in the winter), their pressure will decrease due to the thermal contraction of the air. It is recommended to check tires at least monthly, preferably weekly. Having properly inflated tires will also help you avoid uneven wear on the tread.

Gas stations don't always have accurate equipment for this purpose. Sometimes gas stations use automatic air compressors that stop at a pre-determined level. To make sure you inflate to the right level, double-check pressure with your own gauge.

Recommended inflation pressures are for cold tires; put about 3 PSI more in if the tires have been driven on a while. Inflate to the pressure recommended by the car manufacturer, not to the level stamped on the tire.

Use the correct motor oil

Gas mileage will improve by 1 percent to 2 percent if you use the manufacturer's recommended grade of motor oil. For example, using 10W-30 motor oil in an engine designed to use 5W-30 can reduce your gas mileage by a considerable amount. Using 5W-30 in an engine designed for 5W-20 can lower your gas mileage by 1 percent to 2 percent. Also, look for motor oil that says "Energy Conserving" on the API performance symbol to be sure it contains friction-reducing additives.

Plan trips carefully

There is no more obvious way to save gas than to drive a shorter distance.

Plan your route carefully. With today's GPS route planners, it's easy to calculate a straight route with the fewest stops and diversions. It is also possible to judge which route will have the least traffic. Take highways instead of local routes or city streets when possible – the steady speed maximizes fuel efficiency.

When driving in a city, try to park in a central location, and then walk from one appointment to another, or take public transportation. Ragged stop-and-go city driving is terrible for your gas mileage. This also saves the high level of gas used in parking and pulling out in a parking lot.

Factors that determine the fuel price

Government intervention.

Governments may intervene in gasoline (referred to as petrol in some parts of the world) markets by taxation, which may raise prices for consumers within or outside the governmental territory. Similarly, certain industries may receive financial support from the government to promote commercial enterprise (a subsidy). Generally, subsidized products or services can be sold at lower prices.

Financial markets

The global oil price fluctuates constantly. The key crudes quoted are Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) in the unit of US$ per barrel. The retail fuel price is closely related to the global oil price fluctuation.

Political elements such as structure, regime, personnel, and events can all affect the cost of fuel. For instance, a change in leadership from a leader who doesn't believe in climate change to one who does may result in changes to the cost of fuel for consumers based on different policies, such as choosing not to subsidize fuel. Political relationships between countries are also a factor; nations can go to war over resources, or form alliances in order to trade, both of which can affect the cost of fuel.

Geographic area

Certain geographical areas or countries in the world have an abundance of oil, while others do not have a single drop. Regional consumers within close proximity of high supplies of oil are more likely to have lower costs of fuel due to ease of access. Areas without their own supply of oil that are isolated from the rest of the world (such as islands in the Pacific) can find fuel to be relatively expensive.

Natural disaster or weather

Earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, major floods, and other such nature-related phenomena can affect the production, manufacturing, and logistics of gasoline, which can possibly affect the price of fuel. For instance, a snowstorm may close certain roads, disallowing the transportation of the resource and driving up fuel costs in these areas. Hurricanes or earthquakes can damage oil refineries, abruptly halting production, which can also eventually increase fuel costs.

Calculating the Cost of Gas

How to Estimate Cost of Gas for a Road Trip

road trip planner fuel cost

Many people assume a road trip is a cheaper way to travel across the United States than flying, but that isn't always the case. It depends on the current gas prices and your car's mileage, so you should always add up the cost of your potential road trip before you forego that plane ticket. To do this, you'll need to know the current price of gas, the miles per gallon your vehicle gets on the highway, and the miles you intend to drive on your trip. It's pretty simple to calculate the cost of gas for a trip, and you can get the bottom line in four easy steps.

Calculate Your Gas Mileage

You first need to look up or calculate the mileage, or miles per gallon (mpg), your vehicle gets. You can do this yourself with simple math, or you can use an online mileage calculator . However, your actual mpg may vary depending on your particular driving style, for example, if you prefer to use cruise control or not. You can also try to figure it out by writing down the reading on your odometer the next time you fill up your car. If you have a computerized console, you could also set your trip odometer to zero by pushing the little knob underneath the odometer.

After setting the trip odometer or writing down the number, drive normally until it's time to get gas, then note the odometer reading or the miles on the trip odometer when you fill your tank again. Subtract the first odometer reading from the second to give you the number of miles you've driven. Or, if you set the trip odometer to zero when you filled up the last time, that figure is the number of miles you have driven on that tank of gas. Divide that number of miles by the number of gallons you just purchased on your second gas station visit, which will give you your miles per gallon.

Remember that your mileage will vary based on whether you spend more time driving on the highway or in town. City driving means you'll spend a lot of time stopping and starting, which uses more gas, so your mileage will be lower. If you use a whole gallon of gas to drive just on the highway, however, your calculation will be more accurate.

Research Your Trip Distance

Next, calculate the total distance you'll be driving on your road trip. For this, you can use AAA or Google Maps . Enter in your start and end points, along with any stops along the way, and then note the number of miles it says your trip will cover. Make sure you check that the route being plotting out is likely to be the one you'll take.

If you're planning a several day-, week-, or month-long road trip, you might make some side trips or detours, so it would be impossible to calculate the exact distance. However, you can still make an educated guess by adding in some side trips to your total; if you decide to skip out on them, you'll be spending less money than you budgeted for. Jot down the total distance you'll be driving, plus extra for potential side trips, next to your figure for miles per gallon.

Find Out the Current Price of Gas

For the third step, you need to know the current gas price. Without an approximate price, you can't calculate gas for a trip. Of course it's impossible to know the exact cost of a gallon of gas at any given time in any given location, but knowing the current price will provide you with a dependable approximation of the total fuel cost for your trip. Use AAA to find the average national gas price . Jot down the amount given at the top of the page as your third figure.

Add up Your Trip Cost

Take the mileage of the total distance of your trip and divide it by your miles per gallon. This will give you the number of gallons of gas you'll need on your journey. Then, multiply that figure by the current gas price, and the result is the estimated cost of gas for your road trip.

For example, say you drove 200 miles after filling your car up, set your trip odometer to zero, and had to return to fill up again. On your return to the gas station, you topped up your tank with 10 gallons of gas. Your mpg would then be 200 divided by 10, which is 20 mpg. You are planning on driving 850 miles on your road trip, and the average price of gas was $3.40 at the time you checked.

To calculate the amount of money you need to budget for your road trip, divide 850 by 20 to get the number of gallons of gas you will need, which is 42.5. Multiply 42.5 by $3.40, which gives you $144.50 as the total cost of gas for your road trip.

Don't Forget Other Travel Costs

The cost of gas is only one aspect of the expense of a road trip. You'll also need to factor in lodging, meals, tolls, and other car-related costs. If you're traveling with friends, you can divvy up the cost of gas, so your transportation fee will be even less per person.

Gas prices have dropped in Canada. Will summer bring more relief?

road trip planner fuel cost

If you get Global News from Instagram or Facebook - that will be changing. Find out how you can still connect with us .

Canadians planning a road trip this summer could see some relief at the pumps but a volatile energy market and weather disruptions threaten gas prices in the country, experts say.

road trip planner fuel cost

Nationally, the average price for regular unleaded gas stood at $1.60 per litre on Wednesday, according to fuel price tracking websites GasBuddy.com and GasWizard.ca.

Monthly average prices in the country have been on a downward trend since April, but remain relatively high, said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. That could deter some Canadians from doing long road trips this summer, he said.

Gas prices typically tend to ease in the summer months as refinery maintenance ends, along with the switch over to summer gasoline, De Haan said. The additional gasoline supply is what usually starts pushing gas prices down every year, which is what we’re experiencing right now, he said.

“As we get into the summer, I do think that gas prices nationally could drop another five to 10 cents a litre over the next several weeks as we approach Canada Day,” De Haan told Global News in an interview Wednesday.

If all goes well, De Haan expects that the Canadian average could fall below $1.50 per litre by July 1.

However, the “wild card” could come in July and August when hurricane disruptions threaten major refineries in the United States, which in turn could have a potential impact on costs, he said.

Compared with last year, energy prices are pretty much on par with where they stood in 2023 despite the increase in the carbon price that went into effect on April 1, said Dan McTeague, president of Canadians for Affordable Energy and a former Liberal MP.

McTeague is less optimistic about Canadians seeing a continued downward trend in gas prices this summer.

“I think we should expect the unexpected,” he told Global News, adding that “gas prices have already dropped rather dramatically.”

Lower prices could in fact spike demand, causing prices to “spring right back very quickly,” McTeague said.

Volatility in the energy market, the situation in the Middle East and the Ukraine war are also factors that could put upward pressure on gasoline prices, he said.

Meanwhile, the price of diesel, which is in great supply at this time of the year, is also declining.

“We’re seeing some of the lowest diesel prices since July of last year,” De Haan said.

“In fact, in the next few weeks, there’s potential that we could see diesel falling to its lowest level since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.”

Inflation impacting travel plans

Cost of living concerns are weighing on many Canadians’ plans to get away this summer.

Recent Ipsos polling conducted exclusively for Global News showed that a majority (67 per cent) are scaling back their vacation plans for the summer due to inflation, up five points from last year.

Some 64 per cent of respondents also said that economic uncertainty is affecting their vacation plans, and three in five said they’re prioritizing other savings instead of time away.

The relief at the pumps comes as another mode of travel has become increasingly expensive.

The International Air Transport Association warned on Monday that airfares are likely to continue rising as the industry faces high jet fuel costs, a pandemic hangover and a global push to decarbonize.

Despite that, De Haan said he expects more Canadians and Americans will opt to fly than hit the roads for vacations this summer.

“Road trips have gotten more expensive — not just because the average price of gasoline remains relatively high, but the cost of going places, hotel stays, restaurants have seen increased costs as well that are costing Canadians much more,” he said.

The latest inflation data from Statistics Canada showed that Canadians paid 7.9 per cent more month to month at the pumps in April. Higher global oil prices, gas stations switching to more expensive summer blends and a hike in the federal carbon levy contributed to the gain, StatCan said.

Election latest: Lib Dem leader pays emotional tribute to his mum at manifesto launch; Reform deny Truss comparison over tax cut plans

The Liberal Democrats have kicked off a vital stage of the election campaign by launching their manifesto to "save the NHS". Reform UK haven't gone that far yet, but are seeking to explain their tax-cutting plans. Meanwhile, Rishi Sunak has insisted he's not considered resigning as PM.

It's been a busy morning on the campaign trail, with a manifesto launch and Reform policy event to name but two things we've covered, so forgive us being a tad late with our latest bulletin.

If you're just joining us, here's what you need to know:

  • The Liberal Democrats have launched the first manifesto of the election , vowing to "save the NHS";
  • Leader Sir Ed Davey fixing social care would be key to helping the health service, making care available for free and offering better wages to carers, and spoke movingly about his experience looking after his mother and son;
  • Other pledges included stopping raw sewage being dumped into Britain's waterways and improving ties with the EU ;
  • Our deputy political editor Sam Coates described the party's ambitious policy offering as "serious", though slightly at odds with their often silly campaigning style;
  • You can read the party's manifesto in full here  and read our full story on the launch event below:
  • Reform's tax-cutting agenda has been outlined by the party leadership, though they won't be launching a manifesto until next week;
  • Chairman Richard Tice said the party wants to raise the threshold for paying income tax to ÂŁ20,000  and the point at which small business pay VAT from ÂŁ90,000 to ÂŁ150,000 ;
  • This so-called "great British tax cut" would be funded by overhauling the Bank of England, though it's seen Reform accused of pursing a strategy of "Trussonomics on steroids" ;
  • Nigel Farage also used the event to say he'd welcome the likes of ex-minister Suella Braverman to Reform if the party has a presence in parliament, and defended his comments about Rishi Sunak.
  • Rishi Sunak himself has insisted he did not consider quitting over the fallout from his decision to leave D-Day commemorations early;
  • And he hit out at those aforementioned comments by Mr Farage, when he suggested the PM didn't understand "our culture";
  • But it's been another difficult day for the Tories, with their Scottish leader Douglas Ross having announced he'll quit the role after the election;
  • And our chief political correspondent Jon Craig has heard more discontent from Tories over claims the party chairman has been parachuted into a safe seat, with one labelling it a "disgrace".
  • Elsewhere, Labour has announced it will honour the government's commitment to expand free childcare;
  • Our political correspondent Tamara Cohen says the party has taken on an "enormous challenge" by pledging to take up the policy, which the government has faced serious trouble implementing;
  • Labour has also said it will offer 100,000 new nursery places.

That's all for our lunchtime bulletin - stick with the Politics Hub throughout the afternoon for more news and analysis, and we'll have another bulleting around teatime.

If you need something to help the afternoon go by until then, listen to today's episode of Politics At Jack And Sam's .

You can never have enough polls during an election.

JL Partners have today published their latest poll of 2,004 people, asking how they expect to vote.

This took place after D-Day last week, when Rishi Sunak left the commemorations in Normandy early, sparking a significant backlash.

The results show Labour maintaining a 17-point lead - but the party dropped two points compared to the pollster's last survey, which was before the D-Day anniversary event.

The gap stayed the same as the Tories also dropped two points.

The full results are as follows, with the change from the previous period in brackets.

  • LAB: 41% (-2)
  • CON: 24% (-2)
  • REF: 15% (+3)
  • LDEM: 11% (-)
  • GRN: 5% (+2)

We reported over the weekend about how a Tory candidate had told our deputy political editor Sam Coates that party chairman Richard Holden was a "disgrace to the Conservative Party".

A reminder that he's been accused of a stitch-up by choosing to stand in a safe seat in Essex - 300 miles away from his former constituency in the North East that looks more under threat.

Now, there's more hostile reaction.

A Tory who's been a candidate before and hoped to be again this time texted Sky News saying Mr Holden is an "imbecile" and there was a "great stitch-up of seats".

"I, too, didn't get a seat because ultimately Rishi shoved all his mates into the best ones, while candidates like me didn't hear a peep from CCHQ despite being told to fill in endless application forms for the retirement seats at the last minute," they added.

"Thankfully, the Conservative ship is sinking and couldn't come soon enough."

They said the affair shows the PM's judgement is "way off", adding: "It's quite frankly embarrassing the party allowed this to happen."

A candidate who missed out in a three-way selection added it was "unbelievable" Mr Holden hadn't prepared for questions about his selection in Basildon and Billericay, adding: "Can't wait for it all to be over so we can get rid of these useless people."

You can read more on the row here:

Sir Keir Starmer and his shadow education secretary Bridget Phillipson were at a school today to launch one of Labour's key retail offers of the campaign - 100,000 new nursery places.

By repurposing 3,000 "surplus" primary school classrooms, particularly in disadvantaged areas where childcare demand is not being met, they say it will help parents into work, and ease children into life at school.

'We will deliver'

Speaking to Sky News, Sir Keir clarified for the first time that the scheme announced by Jeremy Hunt to expand the 30 "free" childcare hours to all pre-school children from age nine months would be honoured by Labour.

Asked if he would deliver it, he said: "Yes, we will deliver. Our plan is actually better than the government's... they haven't planned for it, and therefore they haven't got the spaces for it.

"But of course we want to complete on the government's plan, but actually do it in a way that's planned and deliverable."

This is a change of tune, after Labour had claimed they would pursue a different system. Ms Phillipson called it a "shoddy plan" back in February.

This expansion has been rolled out only in part - with nine-month-olds due to receive 15 subsidised hours from September, in what the childcare sector says will be an enormous challenge to fund and staff.

Nurseries have been warning they will be driven out of business, which could exacerbate pressures.

Delivering it will be an enormous staffing challenge - with the government's figures showing 40,000 extra people would be needed.

Getting it right could be key to economic growth and closing the attainment gap between the most and least advantaged children.

But the workforce and infrastructure needed to make it happen will require major investment.

Nigel Farage is asked what he makes of suggestions over the weekend that Rishi Sunak was considering resigning because of the reaction to him leaving D-Day commemorations last week.

The prime minister has today insisted it didn't cross his mind.

Mr Farage says he'd be "very surprised" if the PM does quit before the election on 5 July, but says if we weren't in the midst of a campaign "he would have resigned already".

Were he to quit, the Tories' poll ratings would fall even lower, he says.

Asked if he was willing to work with Tories like Suella Braverman, Robert Jenrick or Kemi Badenoch, Mr Farage says if he establishes an "electoral beach head" in the Commons by winning in Clacton for Reform, he will welcome any Conservatives who want to join him.

The other candidates in Clacton are:

  • Matthew Bensilum, Lib Dems;
  • Craig Jamieson, Climate Party;
  • Tony Mack, independent;
  • Natasha Osben, Greens;
  • Jovan Owusu-Nepaul, Labour;
  • Tasos Papanastasiou, Heritage Party;
  • Andrew Pemberton, UKIP;
  • Giles Watling, Conservatives.

Sky political correspondent Gurpreet Narwan asks the Reform leadership more about their policy to change how the Bank of England pays interest on the debt it holds.

As a reminder - this is the money, about ÂŁ800bn worth, that the Bank has printed since 2008 to keep the UK economy healthy by lending it to the government.

In late 2022, it started to sell the debt off, but this process will take years to complete.

Nigel Farage and Richard Tice want to see an end to interest being paid on the figure, as they say it means billions is going from the taxpayer to high street banks through the Bank of England.

Mr Farage singles out Rishi Sunak for his acts as chancellor during COVID, in which the Bank lent ÂŁ400bn.

He says the then-chancellor should have locked in the interest rate at which the money was borrowed by the government. The base rate stood at 0.1% at the time, and is now above 5%.

He says it was "financial mismanagement on a gargantuan scale" and is costing tens of billions.

The pair say they want to see the Bank pay zero interest on the debts.

'Trussonomics on steroids'

Asked if Reform's plans equate to "Trussonomics on steroids", with the former prime minister's tax cut agenda having caused economic chaos which led to her resignation, Mr Tice and Mr Farage said they will be laying out more of their policies next Monday.

But they say they will not call it a manifesto as people equate that to mean "lies".

Richard Tice, the Reform UK chairman, is giving a speech in London about his party's economic policy.

He says he wants to get more people into work, as it will reduce the burden on the exchequer.

People in the UK are "literally suffocating" because of tax, he says.

His party wants to raise the threshold for paying income tax to ÂŁ20,000, up from which he says will cost ÂŁ40bn.

Mr Tice claims it will be paid for by overhauling the Bank of England.

He specifically singles out the interest paid on the ÂŁ800bn of debt held by the Bank following quantitative easing.

The interest payments on this debt have soared since the base rate went up as the Bank tries to return inflation to 2%.

'Great British tax cut'

It is money taken off the taxpayer and paid on "institutions" in the city, among others.

The money would be used for a "great British tax cut".

Mr Tice says he also wants to raise the VAT threshold for small businesses to ÂŁ150,000 from ÂŁ90,000.

Other pledges include abolishing IR35, or off-payroll working, saying we can't "tax our way out of a crisis".

Party leader Nigel Farage takes over, and says the government may have difficulties issuing gilts if the current system of borrowing continues.

The Liberal Democrats have wrapped up their manifesto launch event, and you can scroll back through the Politics Hub to read more on their announcements and leader Sir Ed Davey's answers to the media.

We'll have more reaction and analysis to the manifesto throughout the afternoon.

Shortly we'll have live coverage of a Reform UK event with party leader Nigel Farage, where he and predecessor Richard Tice will be outlining their economic policies.

Stay with us for updates.

Speaking to broadcasters at the Dog and Bacon pub in Horsham, West Sussex, Mr Sunak is asked if contemplated stepping aside.

It is the first time he has answered on-camera questions since Friday, when he apologised for leaving last week's D-Day commemorations at Normandy before they had finished.

He says: "No, of course not.

"I'm energised about the vision that we're putting forward for the country.

"This campaign is not even halfway through yet, and I'm finding an enormous amount of support for the policies that we're putting on the table."

He says lots of people are saying the election is a "foregone conclusion" - and have been saying so since he took over.

But the PM says he is "not going to stop going - I'm not going to stop fighting for people's votes".

Reacting to the outlining of the Liberal Democrats' election manifesto, our deputy political editor  Sam Coates says the party seem confused.

"A party leader desperate, it seems, to show how serious he is about British politics says he's come up with a manifesto to save the health service, a series of tax rises and proposals that he insists are fully costed," Sam says.

"He (Sir Ed Davey) wants the Liberal Democrats to be taken seriously, but then in the next breath, he says: 'I'm off to go on a rollercoaster'."

A bit of tonal whiplash, to say the least.

Sir Ed spent much of today asking the public to "take a chance" on a serious party in the Lib Dems, but much of his campaigning has been focused on social media stunts - and he opened his speech by joking he'd become "a meme".

"I think that kind of encapsulates a bit of where we are with the Liberal Democrats at the moment," Sam says.
