25 Things to Do in Sedona

25 Things to Do in Sedona

We cover it all in this short guide, from where to eat to what to do in town, to our favorite trails and natural spaces to explore.

Outdoor enthusiasts, wellness gurus, and artists from around the world consider Sedona, Arizona to be a veritable desert mecca. One look at the scenery, and it's easy to see why. If you're considering a trip to Red Rock Country but aren't sure where to start, here are 25 things to do in Sedona for all types of travelers. We think you'll agree that it's hard to deny the unmistakable energy of Sedona, Arizona.

1. Hike to a vortex

For some, the jaw-dropping beauty of Sedona is best explained by a series of vortexes, or supernatural "hot spots" where energy is concentrated. (For others, it's just a reason to put Sedona at the top of your bucket list.) Either way, it's worth hiking to one of Sedona's four vortexes to experience the uplifting vibes.

2. Go for a swim in Oak Creek

Although Arizona can certainly heat up, there are plenty of ways to cool off in Sedona. Pack your swimsuit and head for Grasshopper Point, where a number of small trails provide access to emerald green Oak Creek. This is a great way to spend an afternoon with a picnic and a good book—just remember to pack it all out when you're finished.

Two images: One shows a creek with giant red rock formations in the back; the other features several people in kayaks rowing

3. Photograph Cathedral Rock

Sedona is a photographer's dream, and arguably features some of the most photographed natural areas on the planet. Find your own unique angle at Crescent Moon Picnic Site , where Red Rock Crossing offers sensational views of Cathedral Rock. Plus, this is another great swimming hole on warm days. Note: There is a small $2 per person fee to access the site—or $11 for vehicles with up to five people—which you must pay at the entrance (cash only).

4. Take a water-to-wine kayaking tour

Join local outfitter Sedona Adventure Tours for a wine-tasting excursion with a twist. You'll float down the Verde River on inflatable kayaks before arriving at Alcantara Vineyards for a special outdoor tasting. Unguided and extra fun, you'll feel like a modern-day explorer in search of Sedona's best rosé.

5. Go mountain biking

For travelers seeking five-star single-track, Sedona does not disappoint. In fact, 235 miles of designated bike trails weave through the landscape; up and over sandstone rock, around flowering yuccas, and down into dry creek beds. Trails range from beginner level to ultra-advanced. Pick up a rental (and even a guide) in town and get ready for the best riding of your life.

6. Go on a self-guided wildlife safari

The desert is full of life. This is especially true in Red Rock State Park , Sedona's local wildlife preserve. Here, javelina, mule deer, coyotes and even bobcats can all be spotted. Birders will especially enjoy the banks of Oak Creek; an Audubon-recognized Important Bird Area .

7. Discover your higher self

If the aforementioned vortexes were any indication, Sedona continues to be recognized as a place of healing and spiritual renewal. Discover your higher self with a number of specialists in town, or you can even embark on a multi-day retreat with Sedona Soul Adventures .

8. Indulge in some retail therapy

Sample the artistic side of Sedona at Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village . Split your time between the numerous art galleries and admiring the larger-than-life foxglove flowers growing in the garden. There are even a couple of sweets and ice cream shops to keep the kids entertained.

9. Visit the Chapel of the Holy Cross

A Catholic monument, Sedona's Chapel of the Holy Cross is a popular destination for visitors of all religious denominations. The 90-foot cross built by a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, Marguerite Brunswig Staude, is famous as one of America's man-made wonders and is a must-see while in town.

10. Go for a Pink Jeep Tour

There isn't a more iconic way to experience Sedona than in the backseat of a Pink Jeep . From the Verde Valley to unique heritage sites, your time in Coconino National Forest will be both fun and informative. Plus, there are countless options for rock-crawling tours from extra-rugged to paved so that you can select the perfect level of excitement for your group.

11. Sample Arizona's viticulture

Those who didn’t get enough of Sedona's grapes on the kayak tour will be pleased to know there is an additional tasting room in Sedona: Winery 1912 . Their wines are grown in Southeast Arizona at the largest and most diverse vineyard in the state, but their tasting room is exclusive to Sedona. Burning Tree Cellars , one of seven tasting rooms, is another great option in the neighboring community of Cottonwood .

12. Have a laid-back lunch at Pisa Lisa

After a day exploring the sights of Sedona, you're sure to have worked up an appetite. Get your fix at Pisa Lisa , where authentic wood-fired pizza topped with locally sourced ingredients is served up hot or available for take-out. Save us a slice.

13. Take home a piece of Sedona

Souvenirs come in all shapes and sizes, but you won't find a better selection than at Garland’s Indian Jewelry . Browse their selection featuring southwestern gemstones such as turquoise, opal, and lapis; or consider taking home an authentic Navajo rug.

14. Enjoy coffee with a view

Coffee with a view is a Sedona staple, and Creekside Coffee is a classic spot. Order a pastry to fuel up for the day's adventures and sip it on the back deck, where stunning vistas of Sedona's landscape make you feel like you're in an IMAX Theater.

15. Take a walking tour of Sedona's art galleries

Work off your lunch with a walking tour of Sedona's numerous art galleries as you journey along Red Rock Scenic Byway from bottom to top. You'll find local photography, sculptures, paintings, and much more along the way. By the end of the afternoon, you'll have a true appreciation of the art that this area inspires.

16. Quench your thirst with a local craft brew

Many of Arizona's cities are home to local craft breweries and distilleries, and Sedona is no different. Reward your hiking and biking efforts at Sedona Beer Company , where beers like "Kölschture Shock" lend to the easygoing atmosphere. Local tip: Be sure to order the fried chicken sandwich.

17. Try out tiny house living

Looking for unique lodging in this corner of the Grand Canyon State? Try out what it would be like to live in a tiny house at the aptly named Tiny Camp . With five cabins and outdoor essentials like fire pits and hot tubs, we think you'll find downsizing has its perks.

18. Go golfing in Red Rock Country

Arizona is a fantastic place to putt. Spend the day golfing on one of Sedona's four championship courses , where you can play eighteen holes year-round. The only drawback to golfing in Sedona is that it's hard to keep your eyes on the game instead of ogling the incredible scenery.

Two images: A woman relaxes on a massage table outside, near a creek; stones of ancient ruins

19. Splurge on a spa day

After a few days hiking, biking, and golfing in Sedona, you might be feeling depleted. Treat yourself to a spa day at L'Auberge Sedona . Their creek-side spa offers an array of indulgent offerings, from deep-tissue massage to seasonal specialties.

20. Wander through time (all the way to 600 AD)

Just 40 minutes away from downtown Sedona, Tuzigoot National Monument is one of Sedona's lesser-known heritage spaces. That means fewer crowds so you can spend the day learning about the history of the Sinagua people, not waiting in line for the perfect photo opportunity.

21. Take a trolley tour

For those who prefer a more relaxing pace, a trolley tour is a perfect way to spend an afternoon. This 55-minute ride will take you on a leisurely jaunt through town so you can get your bearings and learn more about Sedona, photo stops included.

The Milky Way can be seen above a large mountain (Cathedral Rock) in Sedona

22. Observe the night sky with the pros

Did you know Arizona has more dark sky places than anywhere else in the world? Sedona, of course, is one of these communities and enjoys sensational starry skies, year-round. Spend an evening with award-winning Sedona Stargazing for an even closer look.

23. Find out why John Wayne was in Sedona

One of the best ways to get to know a place is to learn its history. Spend a few hours perusing the past at Sedona Heritage Museum , where you'll discover the namesake of Sedona as well as its farming, pioneering, and movie-magic past.

24. Earn your views

There is no shortage of hiking trails in Sedona. Create a goal for yourself and check off all seven of Sedona’s Secret 7 Vistas . While they vary in terms of length and difficulty, they all have one important thing in common—incredible views and fewer people.

25. See Red Rock Country from the air

Last but not least, there is no better finale for your trip to Sedona than a flight in a hot air balloon . Soar high above the very trails, swimming holes, and art galleries you've spent a week exploring. There is no more magical feeling than being carried above Red Rock Country by the wind (and a trusty pilot).

No. This tour can accommodate children, seniors and anyone in between. Casual walking is to be expected.

That's ok! Let your guide know you aren't interested in shopping and they can drive you through part of scenic Oak Creek Canyon instead!

Yes! Bell Rock, Airport Mesa and Chapel of the Holy Cross are Vortex locations!

We highly recommend booking these activities in advance to ensure availability. We partner with amazing jeep and hiking companies so please let us know what interests you and we will arrange everything to work seamlessly within our day tour.

Most of the jeep tours are adventurous and bumpy, so please consider this if you are pregnant or have a bad back. The hike can be at an easy pace but we do recommend being able to easily walk on rocky or uneven, sandy paths.

Wear closed-toe shoes that are comfortable for walking on uneven, sandy and rocky ground. Our amazing hiking partner provides backpacks, hiking poles and any gear needed, as well as high-quality snacks and water.

Sedona is typically 10-15 degrees cooler than Phoenix/Scottsdale, which means it can be hot in the summer and chilly in the winter. Dress in layers and wear comfortable, closed-toed shoes.

Your credit card will be charged 48 hours prior to the tour date, at which point all sales are final and no refunds will be given.

**DETOURS does not offer refunds or credits for cancelled flights or illness. (unless we are notified outside the cancellation period) We HIGHLY recommend booking your tour on a date that occurs at least two days after you arrive.

**Purchasing the optional Tour Cancellation Protection at checkout allows a full refund of the tour cost if the customer should need to cancel within the cancellation period due to any reason. Tour Cancellation Protection fee is non-refundable. Tours can only be cancelled up to one hour prior to scheduled pick up time. Self-Guided Driving Tour

The following are loosely listed in order of how you might encounter them on a driving tour of Sedona, starting in the Village of Oak Creek off Hwy 179 and continuing to the “Y” at Hwy 89A, heading west and then doubling back along Hwy 179 toward Uptown Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon along Hwy 89A. Many include easy to advanced hiking in order to reach the best viewpoints, but several can be viewed from a parking lot or on the side of the road. (Be careful parking roadside… traffic in Sedona can be very busy!)

Important: Don’t forget to start at the Coconino National Forest South Gateway Visitors Center at 8375 State Route 179, or the visitors center in Uptown Sedona, to purchase your Red Rock Pass parking permit.

You can start this self-guided tour at any of the points below and simply go back to the top of the list and work your way down. Since most Sedona visitors begin their visit by entering the area from the south, (from Phoenix, off I-17) we’re starting our list there.

  • From the Village of Oak Creek on Highway 179, where you can pull into the Coconino National Forest parking lot for the Bell Rock Pathway to view Bell Rock and Cathedral Butte. This turnoff on the east side of the road is about 1.1 miles north of the National Forest’s South Gateway Visitors Center.
  • Return to Highway 179 and head north 2.8 miles to Back O’ Beyond Road, turning west off the Highway and see spectacular Cathedral Rock.
  • Return to Highway 179 and continue north 0.5 miles to Chapel Road, then 0.8 miles east on Chapel Road up the hill to the famous Chapel of the Holy Cross.
  • Continue on Highway 179 and go to the “Y” at the junction of Highway 179 and Highway 89A. You’re now in Uptown Sedona.
  • From Highway 179, take Schnebly Hill Road. This 38-mile winding and picturesque route ultimately ends at an intersection with Interstate 17. You may choose to go the entire way or turn around and head back down to Highway 179 – it’s up to you. (If you do go all the way up to Interstate 17 and want to come down a different way, you can either go south 38 miles to exit 298 and come back up to Sedona through the Village of Oak Creek on Highway 179, or head north on the 17 and come down Oak Creek Canyon 27 miles on Highway 89A.)
  • Back at the divergence of Highway 179 and Schnebly Hill Road, continue around the world-famous Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Shopping District and follow to the “Y” – a traffic circle at the intersection of Highway 179 and Highway 89A. An exit to the right of the Y will take you to Uptown Sedona, where you’ll find shops, hotels, galleries and restaurants with public free parking lots and on-street parking. Best to get out and stroll a while here… there’s too much to see from your car windows!
  • Leave Uptown and head west on Highway 89A 1.1 mile, turning south on Airport Road (keep your eyes out… there is no traffic light here). A short, steep climb up the hill to Airport Mesa, home of one of Sedona’s vortex spots and perhaps the most popular scenic viewpoint at sunrise and sunset.
  • Return to Highway 89A and head through West Sedona where you’ll find more shops, dining, hotels and galleries. From Airport Road, travel 2 miles west to Dry Creek Road at which you make a right and head north up Boynton Canyon. Boynton Canyon is one of the most scenic of the box canyons that make Arizona Red Rock Country so famous. Boynton Canyon is also home to the renowned Enchantment Resort.
  • Back out on Highway 89A to the west 1.1 miles is Upper Red Rock Loop Road. Red Rock Loop, aptly named, creates a complete loop that passes through Red Rock State Park, one of Sedona’s most popular hiking, picnicking and photography spots. From here, many iconic photos of the view from Red Rock Crossing to Cathedral Rock have been taken.
  • Complete the loop on Lower Red Rock Loop and return to Highway 89A. From here, your trip doubles back 5.5 miles toward Uptown Sedona, and continues up Oak Creek Canyon. You’ll pass Midgley Bridge and Indian Gardens, both great places to stop and take photos. (If traveling north to south, you’ll enter Uptown Sedona about 7.1 miles from Slide Rock.)
  • Just 7.1 miles from Uptown Sedona is Oak Creek Canyon’s most popular attraction, Slide Rock State Park. With easy walking trails, wading in the creek and a natural waterslide, this park is open year-round but is most popular (read: crowded) in the summer months with visitors and families looking for some cool, natural water play. (If traveling north to south, look for West Fork about 2.8 miles from West Fork.)
  • Another 2.8 miles up Oak Creek Canyon on Highway 89A will take you to the trailhead for the West Fork of Oak Creek Canyon Trail, an easy 3-mile and extremely popular day hike. (If traveling north to south, look for West Fork about 6 miles from the Oak Creek Vista.)
  • Nearly 6 miles of winding switchbacks up Oak Creek Canyon on Highway 89A is the Oak Creek Canyon Vista. Look for a well-marked and ample parking lot on the east side of the highway. Don’t miss this opportunity to stretch your legs and view Oak Creek Canyon from its apex as it runs south. Breathtaking year-round, it’s a sight to behold in winter, fall, summer or spring. (If returning from I-17 in the north, the turnoff is about 8.3 miles down the canyon.)
  • From here, you can either turn around and head back down Oak Creek Canyon on Highway 89A south or continue 6.4 miles to the junction of Highway 89A and I-17. If you continue north toward Flagstaff and the I-17, you can either take I-17 south to Schnebly Hill Road or the full 38 miles to exit 298 and return to your starting point in the Village of Oak Creek.

This striking mid-century modern chapel sits atop a perch with a stunning view of the surrounding red rocks, from both within the sanctuary and outside. If you do go inside, please give the building the reverence you would a cathedral and maintain the silence. Outside, the parking lot is steep and often crowded, so coming early to grab a good parking spot is ideal. The walk up the ramp to the building entrance is also steep. There are three parking lots—in the middle lot is the trailhead for Chapel Trail, a highly suggested but optional hike past the red rocks. Open 9am-5pm daily, but check the website for mass and service times.

Two vista points–Yavapai and Courthouse–are near to each other on opposite sides of the Red Rock Scenic Byway. There are hiking trails leading from both, but Courthouse Vista’s trails surrounding Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte are superior. Visitors looking for a meditative experience will also want to seek out the alleged vortex on Bell Rock, so you may find people doing yoga or enjoying a moment of peace. Whichever vista point you choose, both offer splendid views of the buttes and the surrounding red rock scenery. Parking may be slightly easier at Yavapai, for what it’s worth!

This well-kept visitor center has displays on the area's geology and ecology, as well as clean restrooms and a water re-fill station. Outside the main entrance is a decent scenic overlook facing Sedona's Courthouse Butte and Bell Rock. Open daily 9am-4:30pm, Wednesdays 12pm-4:30pm (bathrooms still open).

Built by the Sinagua people over 1,000 years ago, the remnants of this 110-room pueblo sit on a hill in the Verde Valley. A small museum in the visitor center includes artifacts discovered during the excavation. Crowds are rarely an issue here, so this impressive site is a good midday option when Sedona's parking lots are filled to capacity. Open 8am-4:45pm daily.

Red Rock State Park's trails take hikers through desert brush and low forest surrounded by a red rock backdrop. Most hikes require some moderate elevation gain, but the stepladder orientation of the trails mean you can hike as big or as small of a loop as you'd like. The visitor center and open field behind it have some views of the red rocks with no hiking required. Open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Photographers try to get just the right shot of Cathedral Rock looming over the reflective waters of Oak Creek. This picnic area features open lawns and plenty of picnic benches. To get to the best photography spots, walk to the far end of the open fields and follow the path along the creek until you reach a wide riverbank of red rock. Even further than that is Buddha Beach, a small swimming hole directly underneath Cathedral Rock. It's possible to hike to this picnic area from the Secret Slickrock trail, or vice versa. The trailhead is hidden behind some electric boxes about 100 feet north of the park entrance on Red Rock Crossing Rd. Open 8 a.m. to dusk.

This easy, flat trail is within sight of Cathedral Rock for its entire length, about 0.7 miles out and back. If you can walk down hill for about 30 steps, the trail ends on a wide ledge with a stunning, unobstructed view of Cathedral Rock ahead and the Crescent Moon Picnic Site below. If you wish to continue hiking to Crescent Moon, go to the opposite side of the ledge from where you entered to pick up what's labeled on some maps as the Ridge Trail. Follow the rock cairns along the edge of the hill to the left as the path heads downhill. The trail dead ends behind some electric boxes off Red Rock Crossing Rd. Turn left and the entrance to Crescent Moon is right there. Going this far, the hike is roughly 20 minutes one way.

This lookout atop airport mesa is one of the most popular places to catch a sunset, with an unobstructed view of northern and western Sedona. Other than a few large rocks, there is no seating so bring a lawn chair if you have one. Parking is $3 across the street.

This is a must visit for families! Though much of this park preserves an old pioneer homestead and apple orchard, the highlight is a swimming hole along Oak Creek Canyon with a natural water slide. The red rocks surrounding this portion of the creek are also fun to climb around. One brief hiking trail skims the ledge above the creek for wider views. Hours vary through the year but are typically 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.. December and January hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The parking lot for this popular trail fills up fast, so get here early if you can! The entire trail, which follows the west fork of Oak Creek as it meanders through a forested gorge, is 6.5 miles out and back, rated as easy to moderate, and will take roughly three hours. Though the trail remains relatively flat, there are 13 creek crossings over logs and stepping stones, so you won't get far if you're not up for a creek crossing. Still, the trailhead is beautiful and the ruins of the old Mayhew Lodge before the trail goes into the gorge are fun to explore. You can always give it a shot and turn around when the trail becomes too difficult. With over 100 species of birds found here, this is also a popular birding site.

Stop at this vista at the northernmost tip of Oak Creek Canyon for a birds-eye view of the scenery. Vendors of the Native American Crafts Market set up booths on the walkway between the parking lot and the overlook daily. Some arrive as early as the vista opens and stick around as late as it closes, but midday is the best time to catch the most vendors, who sell handiworks from local native artists. The vista is open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. daily.

Enjoy this moderate 3.9 mile loop trail going around Courthouse Butte. Get up close views of the gorgeous formation!

There's so much to do in this small, historic town. In the center of Verde wine country, get some amazing wine tastings, and attend any number of events (as seen on their website, listed below)!

Home of the Audrey Shaft, which was a large part of an ore mine that put the region on the map.

Check out this historic museum & park to learn a little bit more about the history of the area around you!

There is a small entrance fee to enter, and it is open 10am-4pm daily.

A historic Arizona town, once full of miners, bootleggers, and gamblers, are now full of shops, tourist attractions, and restaurants. Come visit!

Check out this easy-to-access viewpoint that gives you a gorgeous panoramic view of the best of Sedona.

Visit this Buddhist site with the historic and sacred Amitabha Stupa, meant for all to come and reflect.

Sitting at the mouth of Oak Creek canyon, here you get a view of Midgley Bridge, which is a fascinating historic bridge. Enjoy lunch here, or just rest your feet and take in the view!

Support local artists from Arizona’s native tribes and shop for souvenir crafts, art, and jewelry. Approved vendors have direct relationships with the artists.

The 7.5-mile Red Rock Scenic Byway has plenty to see and do. In fact, it's often referred to as a "museum without walls."

To reach the Red Rock Scenic Byway, also known as State Route 179, head about 11 miles south of central Sedona. The byway starts after you take exit 298 off Interstate 17.

Cathedral Rock Cathedral Rock

Cathedral Rock is known as one of Sedona's four vortexes (the other three include Bell Rock , Airport Mesa and Boynton Canyon ). Some believe that vortexes are places where the earth emits an energy that fosters healing, meditation and self-exploration. Though all of Sedona is considered to be a vortex, there are certain areas, such as Cathedral Rock, where the energy is said to be the strongest. Many past visitors have claimed to feel tingly sensations while hiking here; others have felt nothing.

The 1.2-mile out-and-back trail to Cathedral Rock, which is located about 2 miles west of the Chapel of the Holy Cross , is very popular and busy, according to past visitors. Recent travelers described the hike up as strenuous – in some places difficult, as you have to scramble over some rocks on an incline. But once you get to the top, the views are spectacular. (Just don't expect solitude once you arrive.) Make sure you wear proper hiking boots as the sandstone and loose rocks can get slippery at times. Reviewers say it will take about an hour to get to the top of Cathedral Rock. According to travelers, it's a great place to take photos of the surrounding red rocks – even amateur photographers will not be disappointed.

Red Rock State Park Red Rock State Park

Although Sedona is surrounded by towering red rock formations, many recent visitors recommend a trip to the official Red Rock State Park specifically to see Cathedral Rock – one of Arizona's most famous landmarks.

This 286-acre nature preserve – located about 10 miles southwest of the "Y" (the intersection of routes 89A and 179) along Oak Creek – boasts great views of Sedona's more famous formations. The park offers a 5-mile trail network that is composed of interconnecting looped trails. The Eagle's Nest Loop leads to the highest point in the park with an elevation gain of about 300 feet. Stop in at the visitor center to learn about the area's history, guided nature walks and moonlit hikes.

U.S. News Insider Tip: If you're unsure if you're in an area with vortex energy, look for the twisted trunks and branches of the juniper trees. Some allege that the twisted tree branches are evidence of the vortex's power. – Carol Kahn, Contributor, Travel

Chapel of the Holy Cross Chapel of the Holy Cross free

If you only have time for one cultural site, the Chapel of the Holy Cross should be it. This stunning church – designed by sculptor Marguerite Brunswig Staude (a student of architect Frank Lloyd Wright) in the 1950s – protrudes from the red cliffs less than 4 miles south of Sedona's "Y" intersection. The main stained-glass window is held together by a giant cross and overlooks the Verde Valley.

Along with admiring the chapel, you can also take a moderate hike here. The Chapel Trail is a 1.3-mile out-and-back hike that starts at the chapel's parking lot and promises views of the surrounding red buttes. Past hikers warn that it's a rocky path and suggest that if you are looking for something easier you take the steep, 0.1-mile path up to the observation area at the chapel.

Go off-roading with Pink Adventure Tours Go off-roading with Pink Adventure Tours

Sedona is known for its off-roading adventures – specifically Pink Jeep Tours, which have become synonymous with the area. One of the  best Jeep tours in Sedona , Pink Jeep Tours offers a variety of experiences that vary by theme and activity level. Tours range from mild, such as the Ancient Ruin tour that includes a hike to the Honanki Heritage Site, to wild, such as the popular Broken Arrow tour. This two-hour excursion traverses rocks, ruts and roots, as well as remote areas of Coconino National Forest. There's also the more rugged Diamondback Gulch tour, which travels on a century-old backcountry wagon trail before descending into Diamondback Gulch, a deep ravine.

Reviewers rave about the funny, knowledgeable guides and say a Jeep tour is a must-do in Sedona thanks to the stunning scenery that's only accessible via Jeep. Others cautioned that the ride can be bumpy at times, and warn that this experience may not be suitable for all travelers.

U.S. News Insider Tip: Start your hike early in the morning to avoid the crowds and desert heat (and plan to spend your afternoon at the resort pool or spa).   – Amanda Norcross, Content & SEO Strategist

Devil's Bridge is a must-see on everyone's Sedona bucket list. Formed by wind and weather erosion, it's the largest natural sandstone arch in the Sedona area. As such, it is one of the busiest hiking trails in Sedona. According to visitors, the parking lot fills up before 7 a.m. most days. To avoid parking hassles, hop on the Sedona Shuttle . Free parking is provided at Posse Grounds Park in West Sedona and from there hikers can take the Dry Creek Trailhead Shuttle (Routes 11 or 12). The service operates Thursday through Sunday and is free and open to the public. The shuttle runs about every 15 to 30 minutes throughout the day that will take you from a safe, accessible parking lot right to the trailhead.

Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village free

When you need a break from the trails, swap out those hiking boots for something more fetching and head to the Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village (pronounced T-la-keh-pah-keh). Perched at the intersection of routes 89A and 179, this sizable outdoor shopping center was designed in the style of a traditional Mexican village. The complex was built on a former sycamore grove, and special care was given to maintain the existing trees. As a result, many of the village's structures are built around the sycamores, making way for interesting architecture and forgiving shade. The stucco walls house a variety of art galleries, retail shops selling modern art and glassware, and restaurants, while the cobblestone streets and mosaic fountains provide a charming, old-fashioned atmosphere.

Many travelers highly recommend spending a few hours perusing Tlaquepaque and checking out the local handmade jewelry, food, music and especially the art. Though many felt the wares sold here were too high-priced, reviewers still suggested a visit for the restaurants and architecture. Many of the best tours in Sedona stop here.

U.S. News Insider Tip: The road to reach the ruins is bumpy and unpaved; allow yourself extra time to reach the site. – Carol Kahn, Contributor, Travel

For a glimpse of what life was like in the red rocks between A.D. 1150 and 1350, take a drive to the Palatki Heritage Site. These ancient cliff dwellings were once the home of the Sinagua people of the Ancestral Puebloans and are now among the largest cave dwellings in the area. The pictographs that cover the walls of the site impress many visitors. Recent travelers also praised the informative and enthusiastic staff, but warn that the road to reach the ruins is quite bumpy.

Bell Rock Bell Rock

Upon your arrival into Sedona via State Route 179, you'll be greeted by the iconic bell-shaped rock formation known – appropriately enough – as Bell Rock. It's a popular first stop for visitors, as the landscape is likely to take your breath away. No matter what time of day you arrive, the lighting on the majestic red-hued mountains is ever-changing. In the background you can spot the "Rabbit Ears" rock formation in the distance, which makes for an excellent photograph, especially at dawn or dusk.

The 3.6-mile trail tends to get busy, as it is one of the most popular destinations for Sedona travelers. There are a few trails that connect to Bell Rock, including Courthouse Butte, where hikers can take a nearly 4-mile loop around both monoliths.

sedona arizona video tour

Slide Rock State Park Slide Rock State Park

For those of you visiting Sedona during the hot summer months, a few hours at Slide Rock State Park is a must. Housed on land that formerly grew apple trees, the park earned its name from the stretch of its slippery creek bed near the original homestead that now acts as a natural waterslide measuring 80 feet in length. Visitors can cruise down the creek on a tube or on their own, or simply enjoy the sun along the rock bed. Beyond the natural waterslide, the park is home to numerous natural swimming pools. The farm's old homestead is also open to exploration.

Some travelers lament over the at times crowded conditions, but still, many say the park is worth visiting, especially with kids. Visitors often bring their families and spend the entire day at the park soaking up the sun and swimming in the chilly water. Others caution that water shoes with good grip are a must as you'll be slipping and sliding any time you're near the wet, algae-covered rocks (a few reviewers reported getting injured or seeing others sustain injuries from sliding on the rocks, so watch your step). To avoid the crowds and secure a parking spot, heed the advice of reviewers and arrive early.

Boynton Canyon Boynton Canyon

Boynton Canyon Trail is one of Sedona's many amazing hikes. It's a moderate, 6.1-mile out-and-back trail that offers beautiful green scenery, surrounded by red canyon walls at the end with a steady incline throughout. According to travelers, you'll want to budget about 2.5 hours to complete the hike.

Boynton Canyon Trailhead is located about 10 minutes from West Sedona and is located on Boynton Canyon Road. It has a paved parking lot with a restroom. Past hikers recommend getting there early in the morning as the parking lot fills up quickly. Because of the trail's popularity, you'll likely encounter other people while hiking. In addition to securing a parking spot, an early arrival will ensure a more pleasant hiking experience (the temperatures only get hotter as the day progresses). Note that bikes are not allowed on this trail and dogs must be on a leash.

I had an exceptional experience on the Scenic Sedona Tour that I wish to share! I was very impressed with the five-hour tour, an invaluable experience that I could not have otherwise received as an unescorted tourist in Sedona. The effects of the last years have rendered Sedona more challenging to explore. This tour not only offers a docent and a driver, museum level knowledgeable and inspired guides, it allows all members of the party to relax, learn and absorb its energy, without the rigors of limited parking and space. We were treated to the world class sites, including Chapel of the Holy Cross and vortex, Bell Rock, Courthouse Rock, Airport Rock, and Amitabha Stupa/vortex. I did the Perfect Sedona Tour which was an excellent length of time to see the beautiful sites of the amazing town of Sedona. Avery was a brilliant guide who was informative without being stuffy about the facts, he kep things on track and took me to one of the hidden gems of this town!

Great day, Great driver, Great experience. Viator review: Excellent experience to the Grand Canyon. Starting in Sedona we had a beautiful drive to Flagstaf then on to the Canyon. Al was a great driver with plenty of knowledge of the area. Very attentive and considerate of passengers. Was available yet felt like we were on our own. Great day at the Grand Canyon and Al set us up and let us go at our own pace and was waiting when we were finished. Much better than trying to go on our own, no worry of parking or driving and was able to enjoy the sights much more. Thanks for a great experience and would recommend to anyone wanting a more relaxing day.

9 Unique & Fun Things To Do In Sedona

Sedona Police Chief accused of creating hostile workplace

SEDONA, Ariz. - Sedona Police Chief Stephanie Foley was promoted to be the city’s top cop nearly two years ago. She’s been with the department for her entire law enforcement career of 17 years.

A statue outside the department was modeled after Foley and a K-9 before she became chief.

But now, multiple employees have raised concerns about working under Foley’s leadership. Two of them are Sergeant Laura Leon and Deputy Chief Ryan Kwitkin.

Sedona is a well-known travel destination with three million tourists a year, and the population is around 10,000. The police department is small, with 30 sworn officers and 20 volunteers.

Back in March, a letter to the city of Sedona from a law firm representing Kwitkin and Leon accused the chief of creating a hostile work environment.

The complaints describe Foley’s alleged "belittling and disruptive behavior against department employees", a culture that is "objectively and subjectively hostile", going on to say she responds to questions unprofessionally with sometimes "inappropriate, unwarranted anger."

The chief has also been accused of directing subordinates to "surreptitiously record others."

Sedona Police Chief Stephanie Foley

Leon has been with the department since 2018. She was interviewed by FOX 10 two years ago for an unrelated story . Documents say when she brought up concerns about the chief, she became "the object of investigation."

Kwitkin was hired by Chief Foley in May 2023 after he retired as a lieutenant at Boca Raton PD in Florida.

Kwitkin’s claim is that Foley "lost her temper" when he asked another employee to help him deliver water and a podium for a department holiday party. Foley allegedly called the request for help "insubordination."

With his probationary period ending, and an above-average review after six months of work, the chief wanted to do a 360 evaluation of Kwitkin and extend probation, so he could work on "communication skills," according to his former lawyer in a letter to the city in April.

One Sedona PD employee who wants to remain anonymous tells FOX 10 that Chief Foley is divisive, manipulative, and retaliates by writing staff members up. The source also says policies are outdated and not in best practice.

As FOX 10 was in Sedona reporting on this story, Chief Foley walked by. Investigator Justin Lum asked if she wanted to talk.

She was on the phone and said "no" and kept walking back to the department's headquarters.

Due to employee complaints, the city of Sedona hired Revolutionary HR Consulting to investigate Foley. The probe was completed in May, but all eight allegations against the chief were unsubstantiated.

That same day, Deputy Chief Kwitkin was put on administrative leave as part of a sub-investigation.

But why was the chief never placed on leave, like Kwitkin or the city’s former finance director, Cherie White, following internal investigations?

Letters on behalf of Leon and Kwitkin say Chief Foley’s executive assistant raised the same concerns about the culture.

It’s also alleged that the city of Sedona has discouraged other employees from coming forward and people fear for their jobs if they speak out.

A statement from Chief Foley reads, "My focus has always been and will continue to be on safeguarding my community and leading my staff with the utmost integrity. As the report states, the allegations against me were unfounded. I want to thank the men and women of the Sedona Police Department for their professionalism and dedication to serving the community. I have a renewed focus on our core tenant here at the Sedona Police Department, which is to selflessly serve all our residents to maintain public order, prevent and suppress crime, and be responsive to needs within the community."

A statement from City Manager Anette Spickard says, "After a thorough, multi-month investigation, we are absolutely confident in Chief Foley’s ability to lead the Sedona Police Department and continue her focus on serving her community."

The full findings of the investigation into Foley are not public yet as the investigation of Kwitkin continues.

Sedona residents are appealing a new resort development near Oak Creek. Here's why

SEDONA — Mark TenBroek posed for a photo in front of a construction site on Forest Road. It’s a spot he chose, reflective of his career as a civil engineer. The city is building a 270-space parking garage there, a large, expensive project, he said.

According to TenBroek, continued development has driven residents away as living expenses increase. That’s one of the reasons he and other Sedona residents are appealing the approval of a new resort development just a few minutes outside uptown.

TenBroek is a member of Sedona Residents Unite, one of two organizations appealing the city’s approval of the Oak Creek Heritage Lodge, a resort planned for development on a plot of land along Oak Creek.

The project was approved this April. Opponents claim the development would cause environmental harm to the area, create additional traffic and would be inconsistent with the city’s development guidelines.

Oak Creek Heritage Lodge is planned for an 11.5-acre site just south of uptown Sedona. The space is open now except for several homes and historic buildings. The project’s developer, R.D. Olson Development, purchased these homes and plan to incorporate the historic buildings into the resort.

The project would include 70 rooms and amenities including a pool, restaurant, spa, meeting space and employee housing. Like the nearby L’Auberge de Sedona resort, the resort would be made up of several clusters of lodging buildings with separate structures for amenities.

R.D. Olson did not respond to The Republic's multiple requests for comment.

TenBroek said Sedona Residents Unite is pragmatic and understands the right to develop, but said R.D. Olson is “pushing it,” in terms of the size of the structures as compared with what’s outlined in city development guidelines.

Critics say the hotel violates city guidelines

The site is located in the Schnebly Community Focus Area, nearly 100 acres of private land with a set of development goals and guidelines. The Schnebly area calls for development to retain rural character, support nonresidential uses and protect the river environment along Oak Creek.

The Oak Creek site also falls within the Oak Creek Heritage District, a new zoning designation meant to give landowners development options “more suitable to the area’s unique features.” The Schnebly Community Focus Area permits lodging like small designer hotels, bed and breakfasts, cottages, bungalows and cabins.

Opponents claim the Oak Creek Heritage Lodge does not fit these specifications.

“What they’re attempting to do is build a number of two-story, glass-fronted large structures,” TenBroek said. “It’s really changing the character significantly.”

He said he would be OK with a development that utilized cabins and cottages as outlined in the Schnebly Community Focus Area.

Carrie Meyer, the city's planning manager, said the development fits the character of Sedona and was compliant with all sections of the city’s land development code.

How development can affect a riparian area

R.D. Olson outlines what it calls sustainable operations the company plans to implement, including the use of solar panels and electric shuttle buses to help mitigate traffic congestion. The development aims to preserve the majority of large native trees on the site and become LEED certified, a benchmark used to rate buildings based on energy efficiency and environmental benefit.

But residents are concerned about the effect the development will have on the region’s ecosystem.

The region is riparian, an ecosystem located along a body of water. These riparian areas are rare.

“The only place in the Sonoran Desert that supports trees is ecosystems along rivers, for the most part,” said Heather Bateman, a wildlife ecologist and professor of ecology at Arizona State University. These ecosystems have high species diversity and support complex habitats, she said.

Large sycamore trees line the creek and the site that would become the Oak Creek Heritage Lodge. The plot is dotted with nearly a thousand trees of varying species and sizes. According to the Sedona Residents Unite appeal, the region is home to deer, javelina, coyote and bobcat that depend on access to Oak Creek. A new development could block their access to the river.

“It’s a source of water year round, even when things are dry,” TenBroek said.

Developers estimated the completed resort would consume 21,600 gallons of water per day. According to the second appeal by residents of Bear Wallow Lane, R.D. Olson doesn’t specify how much surface water the development will draw from the creek. However, public documents show the developer filed a claim for surface water rights with the Arizona Department of Water Resources, listing an annual use of 28.2 acre-feet from Oak Creek per year, or just under 9.2 million gallons.

“Generally, anything that would be de-watering the stream has the potential to affect the vegetation that grows along the stream,” Bateman said. “If we lose these large structural trees, then there’s a whole suite of wildlife we would lose as well.”

Opponents also took issue with the resort’s planned construction of decks that hang out over the floodway and claim these structures could prevent light from reaching riparian habitat.

The Bear Wallow appeal claims the developer’s plan to provide a publicly accessible trail along the creek would invite overuse of the area. Animals sometimes shift the times they’re active to avoid interacting with humans, which can cause complications like making a species more vulnerable to a predator, Bateman said.

But access to nature is important and the issue is nuanced, she said.

“We know that access to nature increases human well-being,” she said. “People have lower anxiety levels, lower depression levels … and when people have experiences in nature it can translate into positive outcomes for, say, supporting specific species or supporting the conservation of something like riparian areas.”

Part of the rationale to encourage nonresidential development within the Oak Creek Heritage District was to avoid carving up the land with the development of a single-family subdivisions, said Meyer, the planner.

Bateman said less fragmented habitat is better for species, but it's unclear if a hotel or a residential development would cause less fragmentation.

Affordable housing: As housing costs skyrocket, Sedona will allow workers to live in cars. Residents aren't happy

Concerns about the floodplain, traffic

Sedona Residents Unite also took issue with the resort’s placement along the creek. The development would be built up to the edge of the creek's floodway, an area where flooding would be significant in a flood event. The resort would be built in a 100 year floodplain, a region with a 1% chance of flood recurrence in any given year.

TenBroek said moving structures out of this 100-year floodplain would be a first step. This is where most of the lodging is set to be built.

Both appeals raised concerns about how much traffic would be generated by the development.

Traffic from a hotel might actually produce less than traffic from a residential development, Meyer said. Hotel guests might leave in the morning and come back at night while residents come and go more during the day. The site is also within walking or biking distance of uptown tourist attractions, she said.

Sedona Residents Unite argues this is only true for the “cabins and cottages” type of development outlined in the Schnebly Community Focus Area, which the organization believes has not been followed in the Oak Creek Heritage Lodge.

“We’re very concerned this development with 70 hotel rooms, it’s going to be a wedding venue, it’s going to have a 7,000 square foot restaurant in it, it’s just going to bring a lot of congestion,” TenBroek said. Traffic could become a safety concern if it blocks emergency vehicles.

These kinds of appeals have happened more recently, said Meyer, the planner. Sedona doesn’t have much vacant land within city limits, so new development projects are often close to residents.

This continued development is pushing people out of Sedona, said TenBroek, who has spent part of the year in the city for around a decade.

On the other side of the creek, construction crews are working on the 270-space parking garage and a new extension to a roadway.

“That’s kind of what Sedona seems to be about these days,” he said.

Sedona City Council will hear the appeals on Tuesday and make a final decision on the project.
