This trip exceeded my expectations. The guides were fabulous & their cooking fantastic. The huts were great accommodation with plentiful hot showers at the end of the day. Everything was spotlessly clean. We were very lucky to have sunshine most days which made the views stunning. As a single traveller I joined the group and was made to feel very welcome. Well done Tasmanian Expeditions.

T. Jobson Monash, Australia

My 16 year old son and I had an amazing time walking the Overland Track with Tasmanian Expeditions. I'm 65 years old and I had not done a lot of trekking in recent years, so I wanted to be sure I was with a capable team. Our guides Ryan and Jess were fabulous in so many ways: from providing great food, advice, knowledge and keeping our group of 7 walkers cheery and supported. I cannot recommend Tasmanian Expeditions highly enough.

Peter Solness Bundeena, NSW 16 Jan 2024

The Franklin River trip was awesome. Full of all kinds of gorgeous landscapes. The guides were awesome and really know their stuff. Also the food was wonderful. The other participants were all very nice and everyone helped each other. A trip of a lifetime with pristine nature

Gigi Davidson Honolulu, Hawaii 21 Mar 2023

We were very luck with the weather and group capabilities, but the organisation of the day's walking was excellent, as was the group leadership. Facilities in camp were also very good and much appreciated.

Lile Judickas Glebe, NSW Australia 19 Jan 2017

The Flinders Island trip was wonderful in every particular the walks and the camp-site

The Bay of Fires is remarkable for its beauty, wildlife and cultural history with long stretches of dazzling white beaches, shimmering turquoise waters, coastal heath and woodlands that abound with wildlife. We leave the beaches, and head inland towards the cool temperate rainforest and ferns surrounding St Columbia Falls and Pyengana’s Farmhouse, overlooking the undulating country of Tasmania’s North-East. Our travels carry on to Cataract Gorge, then to Capital of the North, Launceston, where we will spend the night.

Today’s driving time approx. 315 km / 4.5 hrs. Approx hike 1.5 hr

Day 4: Launceston to Cradle Mountain

We travel via Sheffield, the town of murals this morning towards the magnificent wilderness of Cradle Mountain National Park. The mountain at 1545m high, is one of the park’s iconic features and is surrounded by stands of native deciduous beech, rainforest, alpine heath lands and button grass. Icy streams cascade down the mountainsides and ancient pines are reflected in the still glacial lakes. Explore the park along a number of different guided or self-guided walking tracks. For those who prefer to travel at a leisurely pace, consider taking a trip to Waldheim Chalet or wandering along the Dove Lake circuit. For those with a little more grit, or people who simply love views of gorgeous lakes with rugged mountain backdrops, the hike to Marion’s Lookout is perfect. With weary legs we continue onto our overnight stay at Strahan.

Today’s driving time approx: 279 km / 4 hrs. Approx hike 3 hrs.

Day 5: Tarkine Region

Enjoy a full day of exploration in Tasmania’s north-west, beginning with a visit to the shifting sands of Henty Dunes. Reaching heights of up to 30 metres, these vast dunes are a desert amid Tasmania’s dense rainforests. Continue to Ocean Beach and inhale some of the freshest air in the world before venturing into the Tarkine region. Nestled in the untouched wilderness of Tasmania’s north-west coast, the Tarkine is alive with unique creatures and habitats not found anywhere else on earth, and home to vast forests of myrtle, leatherwood and pine trees – living links to Gondwanaland that it shared with Patagonia and New Zealand millennia ago. Take a guided walk among its pristine rainforest and discover a beautiful waterfall encased in a lush fern forest and rocky cliffs before returning to Strahan.

Today’s driving time approx: 150 km / 4 hrs. Approx hike 3 hrs.

Day 6: Central Plateau to Hobart

Pass through Queenstown with its intriguing, eroded landscape of treeless hills. Continue on to Lake St Clair, Australia’s deepest freshwater lake before entering the temperate time capsule that is the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. Walk in the land of the giants as you explore beautiful surrounds on a guided walk-through tremendous fern forests to Russell Falls that forms part of Mt Field National Park – home to an abundance of wildlife, diverse fauna and stunning lush vistas. Stretch your legs on some great short walks including Donaghy’s Lookout and Franklin River before Hobart and saying farewell to your new mates after your ‘Taste of Tasmania’ experience.

Today’s driving time approx: 324 km / 5hrs. There will be three hikes today, one will take approximately 1 hour and the other two will take around 45 minutes.

Upon arrival, the experienced team from Maydena Bike Park will ensure you are fully equipped and ready to conquer the trails. These trails have been meticulously crafted by Dirt Art, a renowned Tasmanian trail company. With over 73 individual trails to choose from, ranging from beginner-friendly rides to challenging wilderness and pro trails, Maydena Bike Park offers an unparalleled experience. Each trail takes advantage of the park's unique rainforest environment and impressive 820m vertical elevation, catering to riders of all abilities.

Once you're geared up and ready to go, get ready for a full day of exploring the breathtaking beauty of Maydena Bike Park. As you ride, take in the stunning surroundings and immerse yourself in the natural wonders of Tasmania's Derwent Valley. When you need a break, enjoy the finest local produce at the park's cafe and restaurant, showcasing the flavours of the region.

After an exhilarating day on the trails, we'll transport you back to our accommodation for the night. The evening is yours to savour, whether you choose to dine, unwind with a drink, or explore the surrounding area.

Day 2 Maydena - Mt Field - Strahan

Prepare for a relaxed morning as we immerse ourselves in the breathtaking Mt Field National Park. Renowned for its diverse landscapes and breathtaking beauty, this park boasts towering mountain peaks, ancient rainforests, and waterfalls. Our exploration will take us along various walking tracks, including the renowned Russell Falls Track.

After some time in Mt Field, we hit the road, venturing west through the central highlands. Our first stop is Derwent Bridge, where we will visit the remarkable Wall in the Wilderness. Crafted over a span of 15 years by the talented woodwork sculptor Greg Duncan, this masterpiece spans 100 meters and tells the story of the highlands. Carved predominantly from rare Huon Pine, the relief sculptures depict the history, resilience, and struggles of the people who shaped and protected this region. It is a tribute to their indomitable spirit.

Continuing our journey, we arrive at the charming coastal town of Strahan. Here, we check into our hotel before heading out to Henty Dunes. Rising up to 30 meters tall and stretching several kilometres inland, these colossal sand dunes create a desert-like oasis amidst the lush rainforests of Tasmania's west coast. We will relish the opportunity while on the west to have a picnic dinner while basking in the mesmerizing sunset, surrounded by the beauty of this unique landscape.

Day 3 Strahan - Cradle Mountain

This morning we depart for Queenstown to partake in the King River Gorge, Raft and Steam Experience. This extraordinary collaboration between King River Rafting and the West Coast Wilderness Railway seamlessly combines the thrill of white water rafting with the historical charm of a heritage steam train ride.

Our rafting journey will begin on the awe-inspiring King River, surrounded by the majestic West Coast Range mountains. Navigating through 7km of the King River Gorge's captivating rapids, we will venture from Newall Creek to Dubbil Barril, passing through a remote rainforest gorge adorned with ancient Huon Pine trees.

Along the way, we will catch glimpses of the West Coast Wilderness Railway. Continuing downstream, we will catch up with the train at Dubbil Barril Station. The return steam train ride will guide us out of the gorge back towards Queenstown. The train will make a stop at Rinadeena, providing a water stop for the train and a nice hot drink for us.

We will regroup on the bus and make a stop for lunch. Reenergized, we continue our journey towards Cradle Mountain National Park. Once we arrive, we’ll check into our accommodation and enjoy the evening by the fire or maybe out under the stars.

Day 4 Cradle Mountain

This morning we will offer those interested in an early morning walk the opportunity to head up to Dove Lake. This 6km track is surely one of the premier walks in Tasmania. Starting from Dove Lake, a glacially carved lake directly beneath Cradle Mountain, the walk offers both intimate and epic views of the famous mountain. The track undulates around Dove Lake, traverses beneath the mountain, and then returns through the magnificent rainforest to the starting point. The walk takes you through some of Tasmania's special vegetation, from button grass to myrtle, sassafras, Fagus and King Billy pine. Walk in a clockwise direction.

Then it’s over to our friends from Cradle Mountain Canyons who are going to take you on an accelerating tour at Dove Canyon.

Dove Canyon is Tassie adventure at its best. We walk through the pristine rainforest to this stunning canyon. After abseiling in, we spend the day walking and floating through the canyon and doing what we have to do to navigate the obstacles we find along the way. The main obstacles are six waterfalls which we abseil, jump or slide off!

One of the highlights is the Laundry Chute - a ten-metre high natural slide that shoots you out of a large cave (which we call The Pit) into a big open pool. Very unique and highly exhilarating.

This is a committing trip - once you're in, there's only one way out and there is no way to walk around any of the waterfalls. Having said that, most of our clients have no canyoning experience, and it doesn't require any particular skills as such - just an ability to swim and a sense of adventure.

You do need a decent level of fitness. The hardest part of the day physically is the hike out of the canyon. It is 20 minutes, up a steep hill, in a wetsuit, to get back to where our dry clothes are waiting for us.

This evening we kick back and enjoy another night in the Cradle Mountain National Park.

Day 5 Cradle Mountain - Freycinet

This morning you will have one more opportunity to explore the Cradle Mountain National Park before we head east towards Freycinet National Park. We have a long drive ahead of us but we will make a few stops along the way to break up the journey.

When we arrive in to Coles Bay, Freycinet, it’s time to throw on the hiking boots and get those legs moving again as we’re going to conquer Mt Amos. Mount Amos is part of the range of granite mountains, known as the Hazards, which dominate Coles Bay and Freycinet National Park. The track to the summit is steep and strenuous, but walkers are rewarded with panoramic views. This hike takes around 2 hours to complete.

After we make it back down to sea level we’ll head back to our accommodation for the evening.

Day 6 Freycinet

This morning we make our way to the waterfront as our partners at Freycinet Adventure take you on a relaxing paddle around the Freycinet Peninsula.

On this relaxed guided tour of the Freycinet coastline, you’ll glide beneath pink granite mountains, past pristine sandy beaches and across waters so clear you feel you can touch the marine life below. You’ll experience Freycinet’ abundant wildlife as you weave along the coastline. Our guides share little known stories of the area and give you the chance to find out some fantastic facts. We stop half way through on a secluded sandy beach for a freshly brewed cup of coffee and a tasty snack.

Our tours are run in small groups which means you have the chance to ask questions along the way.

All you need to wear is comfortable clothing, you will be provided with warm jackets if required. Your footwear will get wet so we recommend flip flops/sandals or bare feet.

After a morning on the water, we will grab a bite to eat before we move on to our next activity.

The crew at ALL4 are going to be taking you on an unforgettable and fun adventure. Based in the seaside town of Coles Bay on Tasmania’s East Coast, ALL4 operates in one of the World’s most spectacular National Parks, Freycinet. Specialising in small, intimate adventure tours, ALL4’s vehicles allow us to share hidden, often otherwise inaccessible locations within the park, enabling you to experience the wonder of Freycinet in ways that few people will ever have the opportunity to do. Jump on board a 2 seater Honda Pioneer ATV as you wind your way through eucalypt covered hills, boulder strewn valleys and coastal heath, to where red granite, blue seas and fine white sands collide at South Friendly Beaches. Or head to the dramatic sea cliffs of Cape Tourville for panoramic views of the Freycinet Peninsula and a glimpse of Wineglass Bay. It’s an experience you’ll never forget.

After a day of exploring the sea and land it’s time to kick back and enjoy the evening.

Day 7 Freycinet - Hobart

After a massive 6 days of bike riding, rafting, canyoning, hiking, kayaking, and all-wheel driving, it’s time to unwind with a cruise into Wineglass Bay. Wineglass Bay Cruises is a 41⁄2 hour cruise of the waterways surrounding Freycinet National Park from Coles Bay to Wineglass Bay on Tasmania's East Coast.

Cruise the spectacular coastline of Freycinet National Park from Coles Bay to Wineglass Bay. Be enthralled by the stunning granite coastline, including the dramatic pink peaks of the Hazards range.

Discover a coast dotted with sparkling white sand beaches, including Cooks and Bryans beaches, only accessible by water or a full day bushwalk. Explore the inner passage of remote Schouten Island, home to little penguins and short tailed shearwaters, before heading into the Tasman Sea towards Wineglass Bay. Look out for various hidden sea caves, blowholes and waterfalls amongst the sheer granite cliffs.

Uncover the rich history of the region, including aboriginal heritage and tales of early explorers and entrepreneurs.

After our cruise, we will make our way back to Hobart. Along the way, we will stop off at Devils Corner for a tasting and an opportunity to reflect on the incredible adventure you have been on.

We will arrive back in Hobart at approximately 5:30 PM.

What people love about Active Tours in Tasmania

This tour was absolutely fantastic. We were able to squeeze in and see so much of Tasmania’s natural beauty! Our tour guide Hayden was amazing - cool, calm and knowledgeable! I was overjoyed when he helped us spot some platypus in their natural environment. Whilst on the bus itself he shared heaps of information and fun facts to keep us entertained. There is a lot of early starts - which is totally fair enough since it meant we could enjoy so much of what Tasmania has to offer. There is a lot of walking - but there are many choices of walks to do, so you can chose the level of difficulty in most places and all walks are optional. One of my favourite trips in Australia so far ?
Excellent Larry our guide took very good care of us. Did his best to ensure we all were ok and happy
Sure it would have been radical to do the hike independently; cheaper yet more daunting, lonely, and stressful and ultimately I would've kept procrastinating and never reached my goal of hiking Cradle Mountain. By booking a tour it made me accountable and I achieved my goal and it feels great!

Private Tasmania Tours

Touring northeast Tasmania with Pepper Bush Adventures offers a beautiful destination for visitors. Tasmania is renowned for its stunning kaleidoscope of landscapes, from rugged coastlines and pristine beaches to dense forests and majestic mountains. Pepper Bush Adventures conducts private tours in northeast Tasmania, which boasts two national parks, including Ben Lomond and Mt William, offering birding, wildlife spotting, and photography opportunities.

The diverse habitats in northeast Tasmania attract various bird species, making it an excellent destination for bird tours. The region is also home to unique wildlife, and Pepper Bush Adventures conducts two of Australia’s most highly regarded nocturnal wildlife tours. The warmer months produce some fascinating reptile roadside discoveries.

Tours through Northeast Tasmania’s forests and geology offer a charming blend of lush rainforests, ancient trees, unique rock formations, and rich mining history. Whether exploring the dense greenery of the northeast Tasmania highlands, marvelling at the granite boulders of Mt William, or visiting the rugged terrains of Ben Lomond, visitors are treated to a diverse and enriching natural landscape. Pepper Bush Adventures offers 1–3-day private tour options to discover northeast Tasmania.

Tasmanian Platypus and Echidnas

Tasmania is fortunate to have two of the world’s only five living monotreme species. The platypus and short-beaked echidna are always popular roadside finds while on a Tasmanian tour with Pepper Bush Adventures.

The platypus is one of the most unique and quirky animals on the planet. Its combination of features seems almost too strange to belong to one animal. The platypus has a duck-like bill, a beaver-like tail, webbed feet, and a double fur coat. You can see these spectacular creatures on tour with Pepper Bush Adventures.

The short-beaked echidna is a popular roadside discovery. While touring through the local country roads, we encounter these remarkable creatures. The echidna is covered in spines, which are modified hairs made of keratin and provide an effective layer of protection. The echidna has an 18 cm tongue used to capture ants, termites, and other small invertebrates, which are the echidna’s primary food sources.

Nature Tours in Tasmania

They offer opportunities for outdoor activities such as birdwatching, wildlife viewing, and photography, making them a must-visit for nature enthusiasts exploring Tasmania’s diverse landscapes.

Northeast Tasmania boasts several beautiful beaches along its coastline, each offering charm and natural beauty. These beaches are beautiful for their natural scenery and offer various Tasmanian tour activities such as birding, beach walks, and simply relaxing amidst stunning coastal landscapes.

Kangaroos and Campfires – Exceptional Memories

Go on tour in the great outdoors with Pepper Bush Adventures. Immersing yourself in the wilderness can be a remarkable experience, connecting with nature in its purest form.

Dinner around a campfire plunges you into Tasmania’s natural world—the crackling of the fire, the scent of wood smoke, and the open sky above. This natural backdrop enhances the outdoor dining and wildlife experience, leaving stories to tell.

On a Pepper Bush Adventures Quoll Patrol wildlife tour the local mob of forester kangaroos will join you for dinner. These beautiful iconic creatures are part of the venue’s landscape and are enjoyed by visitors for their unique social behaviour and presence at the campfire.

The ambience of campfire dining is about embracing simplicity, connecting with nature, and enjoying good food made from Tasmanian produce in a setting that boosts the senses. Campfire dining with Pepper Bush Adventures’ guides Bushie and Ben and the Roo-Team creates a unique setting combining rustic charm and the thrill of after-dark Tasmanian wildlife experiences

Birdwatching in northeast Tasmania offers a rich experience due to the region’s diverse habitats, from coastal heathlands to rainforests. Pepper Bush Adventures offers one, two, and three-day birding tours, all departing Scottsdale.

Exploring the wetlands of northeast Tasmania provides a rewarding birdwatching experience. It showcases a wide range of waterfowl, waders, and other wetland-dependent species in their natural habitats. We take advantage of viewing the platypus while in these wetlands.

Endemic birds in northeast Tasmania occupy various habitats, including forests, woodlands, heathlands, and wetlands. Eleven of Tasmania’s twelve endemic bird species are known to northeast Tasmania.

Northeast Tasmania’s forests offer a satisfying adventure for birdwatchers. Exploring these habitats provides a chance to connect with nature and discover the unique birdlife of Tasmania. Mt William National Park’s mix of coastal heathlands, woodlands, and grasslands provides a diverse range of habitats for birdlife, making it a must-visit destination for birdwatchers in northeast Tasmania.

Pepper Bush Adventures offers a selection of day tours departing Launceston or Scottsdale. Whether you’re interested in wildlife encounters, scenic drives, birdwatching, vineyard lunches, or simply relaxing in beautiful surroundings, Pepper Bush Adventures’ Tasmanian day tours offer something for every type of visitor.

Pepper Bush Adventures’ experienced guides lead the tours, offering insights into Tasmania’s history, geography, flora, and fauna. They enhance the experience with stories and knowledge unique to each tour.

Visit Ben Lomond National Park followed by a delightful visit to a local vineyard for lunch and wine tasting. A morning at Trowunna Wildlife Sanctuary to meet the Tasmanian devils and other wildlife species can also precede a vineyard visit.

Other Tasmanian day tours with Pepper Bush Adventures venture into the Tasmanian forests to discover the rainforests and waterfalls. They also visit Mt William National Park for some beach walks or birding activities. After-dark wildlife day tours are also available from April to September.

Eastern Quolls in Tasmania

Pepper Bush Adventures produces the Quoll Patrol wildlife tour, which features the eastern quoll. These cheeky and inquisitive undercover specialists will entertain you and put a sparkle in your evening. They dart here; they dart there in their poker dot pyjamas in pursuit of their evening meal.

Eastern quolls are carnivorous marsupials native to Australia, including Tasmania. These spotted critters are about the size of a small domestic cat, with males typically larger than females. They have short, dense fur that is usually grey or brown on the upper parts of their body, fading to a creamy white on their underside. They have a pointed snout, large eyes, and rounded ears. Their fur has spots or patches of lighter coloration, especially on the throat and chest.

Eastern quolls were once widespread across south-eastern Australia, including Tasmania. Eastern quolls are primarily found in Tasmania due to extensive habitat loss and predation pressure from introduced species on mainland Australia.

Tasmanian Wildlife Safaris

Pepper Bush Adventures is a highly regarded tour operation in Tasmania that specialises in providing unique and immersive wildlife experiences, including nocturnal wildlife tours.

The company offers guided tours designed specifically for viewing Tasmania’s nocturnal wildlife. Tours typically go into remote and pristine wilderness areas, where you can encounter animals such as forester kangaroos, Tasmanian pademelons, brush-tail possums, eastern quolls, Bennett’s wallabies, bare-nosed wombats, platypus, short-beaked echidnas, birds, reptiles, and more.

Pepper Bush Adventures prides itself on its knowledgeable guides who are passionate about Tasmania’s wildlife and natural areas. They provide informative commentary throughout the tours, offering insights into the behaviours and habitats of the nocturnal creatures you encounter.

Whether you are interested in birdwatching, learning about native flora, or focusing on specific wildlife species, the Pepper Bush guides can accommodate varying interests.

WESTERN WILDS JOURNEY

Come take a journey of discovery through the storied wilderness of western Tasmania . It’s a nature- and culture- rich region that makes you want to slow down and explore further and deeper. Whether you favor beaches or rainforests, waterfalls or rivers, you’ll find a wealth of possibilities on a journey through this land of rugged beauty. Starting with the Lyell Highway from Hobart to Queenstown, you can veer off toward any number of wilderness or cultural pursuits. Take time to venture over roads less traveled and create your own stories.

The Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area (TWWHA) takes up one-fifth of Tasmania, an area bigger than Connecticut. And it’s one of Earth’s last real wilderness areas, protecting a vast tract of temperate rainforest and its ancient plants and unique wildlife.

With a history stretching back 40,000 years, western Tasmania has Aboriginal sites brimming with artifacts and holding cave systems with Ice Age rock art. Then there are the more recent centuries of mining, pining, and convict history. Sarah Island in Macquarie Harbour was the site of one of Australia’s harshest penal colonies. Hear chilling tales of men who attempted escape across windswept barrens, open water, and impenetrable forests.

OVERLAND TRACK WALK

A must for both serious and novice trekkers, the Overland Track wends its gorgeous way from Cradle Valley to Lake St. Clair, a hike of about 50 miles. Whether on an organized outing, or a self-guided expedition, this is one for lovers of the outdoors.

Sign up for the Cradle Mountain Huts Walk , a six-day guided adventure through the heart of the TWWHA. Over landscape formed more than 150 million years ago, you’ll traverse glacially carved valleys, thick rainforests, button grass moorland, and alpine meadows, all steeped in beauty. At night, kick back with a hot shower and a delicious three-course meal prepared by your guides. Share stories with your fellow adventurers, and then retire to your comfy private hut.

DOVE LAKE CIRCUIT WALK

Not up for overnight trekking? Take a day or half-day walk in the Cradle Mountain area. Whether you seek alpine heathland or old-growth rainforest, lakes or mountain streams, the outback here delivers. In the fall, prepare to be dazzled by the fagus (deciduous beech), as it turns from green to gold to orange. And keep your eyes peeled for local wildflowers you may not be familiar with—waratah, banksia, and hakea. As for exotic animals, look for platypus, echidna, rare and adorable spotted quolls, and, yes, Tasmanian devils. Birders will not be disappointed either.

Dramatic vistas are easy to find around Dove Lake . On a two-hour circuit of the lake, enjoy sweeping views of Cradle Mountain, the jewel of Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair National Park . And check out the fine views from Weindorfer’s Chalet, a rustic alpine retreat that was once home to the park’s founding father and his guests. Just outside the park entrance, a visitor center, shop, and café cater to visitors, while an interpretative center stands inside. Accommodations range from simple cabins to private lodges.

A STAY AT PUMPHOUSE POINT

Escape to a secluded lakeside retreat in the wilderness. Pumphouse Point at Lake St. Clair provides luxury accommodations with local historical flavor. This new all-inclusive wilderness experience on the Southern Hemisphere’s deepest lake offers a variety of opportunities in a spellbinding natural environment. Take walks in a fjord-like wilderness. Ride mountain bikes over wooded paths. Hike bush trails. Row a dinghy for up-close views of water life. Take a fly fishing lesson—the trout fishery here is tops. After a full day, share long-table feasts of sophisticated locally sourced food with hosts and fellow guests in the Shorehouse, a converted 1940s hydroelectric pumphouse on the lake with splendid views in every direction. Or just tuck into the in-room larder filled with such local highland produce as cheeses, soups, and cured meats. Afterward, sip a Tasmanian whisky or craft beer from the "honesty bar" .

The area is known as the land of a thousand lakes. Its many alpine tarns were formed by glacial action 8,000 to 20,000 years ago. Winter snows bring out a quiet, majestic side of the area.

Take to the Mountains

Take the path less travelled and journey deep into the rugged mountain ranges of the west coast. Mount Murchison is a challenging 1278m alpine circuit near Tullah that rewards with views of glacial lakes. The Mount Dundas track reveals rainforest and the Fraser Creek Hut. Montezuma Falls track is suitable for both walkers and mountain bikers and follows an old abandoned tramway through rainforest until you reach Montezuma Falls – Tasmania’s highest waterfall.

Further south, near Queenstown, join a local RoamWild tour for an action-packed Mountain Heights and Wildlife Nights 4x4 adventure to Mt Owen for a serene sunset at the top of the peak. From the summit you can take in incredible 360-degree views out to the natural Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage sites of Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, the Franklin and Gordon Rivers National Park, Hells Gates and the wild Southern Ocean beyond the west coast.

After taking in the view and watching the sun sink below the horizon, extend your adventure to discover what creeps about under cover of darkness in Tasmania's ancient rainforest armed only with a flashlight. Accompanied by your guide learn about these nocturnal creatures and listen to the stories of the piners and miners that shaped the west coast.

Cruise Gordon River

Go wild without roughing it on a journey from the small town of Strahan out to Macquarie Harbour and down the Gordon River. Gordon River Cruises’ Spirit of the Wild is like no other vessel in Australia. Fitted with a hybrid propulsion system consisting of both diesel engines and electric motors, it offers passengers an unparalleled experience—a quiet cruise. The environmentally sensitive silent-drive feature transports you to a primeval world, alive with the sounds of birds and wind and lapping water. Six-hour tours include guided walks and a buffet lunch.

For a luxury option, book a Fly and Cruise Tour from Hobart with Par Avion Wilderness Tours. Fly over the Central Highlands of Tasmania toward the west coast, and then cruise down the Gordon on the Spirit of the Wild .

The Franklin and Gordon Rivers, the “wild rivers” at the heart of the TWWHA, are famous as the site of Australia’s largest conservation battle. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Tasmanian government wanted to dam the Franklin for hydroelectric power. Environmentalists’ success in halting the project was a key factor in the TWWHA receiving a World Heritage listing. Earlier stories of timber extraction by convicts and pioneers have left a rich legacy of hardship and adventure in the wilderness.

WHITE WATER RAFTING

A challenging and rewarding experience awaits those who take on the undammed, untamed Franklin River. Brawling through gorges and canyons, the Franklin provides Australia’s best white water rafting. Several companies offer five- to ten-day expeditions, with meals included and camping in caves along the riverbank.

Early “piners” traveled the river in search of the Huon pine that grows along its banks. Some remaining Huons are thought to be 1,000 years old. Other indigenous species include wallabies, yellow-tailed black cockatoos, and white-breasted sea eagles. Australia’s Greens movement began here in the 1980s with a blockade protest against the proposed Franklin Dam. The result is a free and wild river ecosystem.

The Franklin flows 78 miles through the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park , part of the TWWHA. Rapids vary from class 1 (gentle) to class 6 (extreme); some tours portage around the tougher stretches. At the end, rafters catch the Gordon River Ferry, or charter a float plane or yacht to pick them up.

Wilderness Expeditions

A Wild Pedder Wilderness Tour plunges into Tasmania's western wilderness, offering a new activity on each of four days. From bushwalking and kayaking, to mountain climbing and caving, adventurers will bring back lively stories of thrilling experiences. Nights are spent at a wilderness lodge around roaring fires with good Tasmanian food and wine.

The trip starts with a hike through a boulder-strewn landscape sculpted by glaciers. You’ll come across hidden mountain lakes and tarns rimmed with twisted eucalyptus (gum) trees. Spend the night in Pedder Wilderness Lodge in Southwest National Park, Tasmania’s largest. Watch the sun set over the Frankland Range; linger until the sky fills with stars.

The next day brings kayaking in a gorge surrounded by craggy peaks. Paddle onto Lake Pedder with its pink quartzite beaches. Then it’s on to an ascent of button grass plains and quartzite spurs overlooking Lake Pedder. Scramble over boulders on the way up Mt. Eliza, where there are panoramic views of ranges and peaks. On the final day, explore the Florentine Valley and see some of the tallest flowering plants on Earth—the Eucalyptus regnans, which can reach up to 280 feet tall, second only to the redwood. Enter a karst cave system where a creek disappears into a dark underground abyss.

WEST COAST WILDERNESS RAILWAY

Hop aboard the West Coast Wilderness Railway , a train pulled by an 1890s steam locomotive. Passengers travel on the Southern Hemisphere’s steepest steam-operated railway line, up through spectacular wildlands and views, across historic bridges, and down to Dubbil Barril, a stop on the King River where you can pan for gold and taste Tasmanian leatherwood honey. The old engines were built to move copper ore for the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company, taking their loads from Queenstown to the port of Strahan.

West Coast Wilderness Railway also operates the new Heli-Steam experience near Queenstown. The itinerary includes a two-hour steam train trip, which explores fascinating mining history and takes you through an old-growth forest. And then comes a breathtaking scenic helicopter flight from Regatta Point.

WATERFALL WALKS

With 230 waterfalls in Tasmania, visitors have a choice of picturesque settings for hiking and picnicking. About an hour west of Hobart, Russell Falls graces Mount Field National Park with three tiers of curtain-like cascades. One look and it’s easy to see why this is Tasmania’s most photographed falls. Take a night walk with a flashlight and see glow worms.

Another tiered delight, Liffey Falls steps its way down the Liffey River to a spray-pool grotto. There are a number of smaller falls leading up to the final tier and main attraction, all of them encircled by lush ancient rainforest. Stop at Deloraine Deli on the way and ask the friendly staff to help you pick out some tasty Tassie picnic supplies.

At 341 feet, Montezuma Falls is Tasmania’s highest. This one plunges deep in the wilderness, more than an hour north of Strahan. The area is rich in mining and railway history; look for the original sleepers from the old tram line. Less than an hour from Queenstown, Nelson Falls is surrounded by ancient plant species thriving in the cool, temperate rainforest. Breathe the clean, tree-scrubbed air.

Private Wilderness Charters

An all-inclusive, guided expedition takes you deep into Tasmania’s remote and untouched south west. The landscape is scored with wild rivers, quartzite peaks, and extensive waterways. A Marine Nature Reserve (and part of the TWWHA), this area is accessible only by foot, boat, or light aircraft.

Fly from Hobart to Melaleuca, and then travel with Tasmanian Boat Charters’ crew (skipper, chef, and guide) through mirrored waters to your floating home. A boutique hotel, the Odalisque is a custom-built twenty-meter vessel equipped with hot showers and soft beds.

Guest chefs from Hobart’s best restaurants provide top-notch, modern Tasmanian fare, paired with fine Tasmanian wines. Expert guides with years of experience double as your personal walking encyclopedias, helping you unlock the secrets of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

FLY FISHING EXPEDITION

A fly-fishing trip in the TWWHA gets to the heart and spirit of the wild highland lakes. Nestled in the Western Lakes fishery in the Walls of Jerusalem National Park, RiverFly Wilderness Huts offers modern insulated lodgings a stone’s throw from Lake Ina and close by nine other lakes. Guides cater to all skill levels, from beginner to expert.

This fly fisher’s paradise averages 3,300 feet in altitude and features varied terrain, from alpine to temperate rainforest. Wild brown trout dominate the fishery, with an average size of 2.5 pounds (18 inches). The largest trout caught in recent years weighed around 17 pounds. That’s right, these are big fish, and you’re almost sure to catch one, or a dozen. Fishing from RiverFly is mostly by lake-edge and wade-polaroiding, in shallow and crystal-clear waters.

Clustered under tall snowgum trees, the huts are simple, lightweight structures, with insulated walls, canvas roofs and ceilings, and wraparound decks, all perched above the native flora on raised platforms. Among iconic Tasmanian animals inhabiting the area are wallabies, wombats, owls, and eagles. Snow-capped Mount Olympus and the heath of Skullbone Plains form a backdrop, while the gravel-sand beaches spread a welcome mat.

The SouthWest Wilderness

The remote southwestern part of Tasmania remains one of the wildest and most beautiful places on Earth. Small islands and inlets off the Indian Ocean, sapphire-colored waters, empty beaches, and cool rainforests exist far from the pulse of civilization. An excursion to this lightly explored region comes with lifelong memories and stories. A Par Avion excursion touches down in the tiny settlement of Melaleuca, which is inaccessible by road. On a guided walk you’ll hear tales, tall and true, of the local Aboriginals and of bushman Deny King. The legendary naturalist, painter, and tin miner established a recovery program for the endangered orange-bellied parrot. His passion helped protect the region as part of the TWWHA.

You’ll stay at Southwest Wilderness Camp , an eco-friendly glamping operation perched on the shores of Bathurst Harbour. Enjoy private accommodations in a lush rainforest. Guides interpret the area’s fascinating natural and local history. At night they become wilderness chefs and prepare mouthwatering Tasmanian dishes, accompanied by Tasmanian wine.

While here, venture out to explore the islands of Bathurst Harbour and walk along the remote beaches of Southwest National Park. Take a half, full, or multi-day kayaking trip in the Roaring 40s , waterways known for the prevailing westerly winds that sweep around the high southern latitudes.

Three Capes Pack Free walk day 1

Walk stunning Waterfall Bay to Fortescue Bay

TRANSFER TIMES: Morning: 23 min transfer from accommodation to start of the trail. Afternoon: 23 minute transfer from the end of the walk to accommodation.

WALKING OPTIONS: Main walk: 19km. Starts with a 2 hours ascent through rainforest then descend for next 1.5 hours. Track then undulates. Good level of fitness required. 9 hours walking with breaks.

Shorter walk option: 6kms. Moderate Level of fitness required. 3-4 hours walking with breaks. Grade: Medium.

TERRAIN: This track is a narrow, natural trail with some exposed roots, rocks, logs, and some overhanging vegetation. The track begins with a steep climb with five small creek crossings. The track then descends before undulating through coastal forest. There are unfenced sheer sea cliffs.

ITINERARY: Main walking itinerary: After breakfast we head to picturesque Waterfall Bay to walk one the peninsula’s most impressive tracks. The Tasman Coastal Track is nothing short of amazing. Although this is a challenging walk it is worth the effort, with most guests saying this was the highlight of their trip. We begin at Waterfall Bay where a 100-metre waterfall plunges into the ocean. The track then gently climbs through tall stringybark forest before entering lush and beautiful rainforest.  For the next 45-60 minutes we climb steeply to Tatnels Hill, the highest point of the day at 548 metres. From here the climbing subsides and the trail winds downhill before undulating along the coastal escarpment. The frequent views of dramatic towering sea cliffs never fail to impress. The variety of habitats seen on this walk also provide for a great diversity of wildlife. Keep an eye out for echidnas, wombats, potoroos, pademelons and Tasmania’s endemic birdlife including the rare and endangered swift parrot.  A colony of little penguins also call Fortescue Bay their home and can sometimes be seen at dusk returning to their burrows.

Shorter walking option: On today’s shorter walk, we will follow the group through the rainforest before returning to enjoy a short side trip to Waterfall Bluff Lookout. We then walk north along beautiful sea cliffs via Patterson’s Arch and Devils Kitchen to the impressive Tasman Arch. After lunch, free time is available to visit Port Arthur Historic Site (at clients own expense) or relax at the lodge.

Afterwards, we return to Stewarts Bay Lodge for a relaxing night. Dinner tonight is at Gabriel’s Restaurant at the lodge. Enjoy a wonderful meal served with wine overlooking the bay.

Walk Three Capes

Cape Pillar Helicopter or Cruise. Cape Hauy walk.

TRANSFER TIMES: Morning: 23 min transfer from accommodation to start of the trail. Afternoon: 1.5 hour transfer from the end of the walk back to Hobart.

MAIN WALK GRADE : 10km. Undulating walk, lots of up and downs with steps.  Good level of fitness required. 4.5 hours walking with breaks. Medium grade. EASIER OPTION: 6kms. A shorter version of the same walk. Good level of fitness required. 3 hours walking with breaks.

TERRAIN: This track has short, steep hill sections. The trail is a firm gravel surface with many well-formed, evenly spaced rock steps. There are short sections of boardwalk. There are some unfenced sheer sea cliffs. This walk is out and back on the same trail.

ITINERARY: After a relaxed hot breakfast choose from seeing Cape Pillar by either helicopter or cruise. We will also enjoy a walk to Cape Hauy today.

For those who join the helicopter experience the highlight of the day is a bird’s eye view of the magnificent towering sea cliffs of Cape Pillar and remote Tasman Island with its exposed lighthouse. Subject to minimum numbers of 4 guests. You will also enjoy a sit down lunch at the Port Arthur Lavender Farm.

Alternatively, guests can enjoy a three-hour wilderness cruise around Cape Pillar. This exhilarating journey provides spectacular views of the Three Capes with their sheer dolerite, ‘organ-pipe’ cliffs and sea stacks. There is a chance to spot albatross, seals, whales and dolphins. For those choosing this option you’ll enjoy a takeaway lunch from the local Lavender Farm.

*Please note the scenic helicopter flight requires a minimum number of guests to proceed.

*Please note Rotor-Lift Aviation may need to cancel flights due to the weather. If this happens, all clients will undertake the wilderness cruise option instead. We will advise clients of this prior to departure.

The walk to Cape Hauy begins at Fortescue Bay and winds through coastal forest with an abundance of wildflowers. There are many steps on this walk, as it winds it way out to the exposed sea cliffs of Cape Hauy where a lookout platform gives unrivalled views of the off-shore sea stacks known as Totem Pole, The Candlestick and The Lanterns. For those wanting a shorter option, there is a wonderful viewing area at the halfway point and the vista is just as spectacular. A fabulous end to your Three Capes Adventure.

After our walk, we make the return journey to Hobart.

ARRIVAL TIME: We arrive back into Hobart at approximately 8.00pm. Airport drops at 7.30pm are available enroute for those wishing to fly out that night. If booking flights please do not book before 8.30pm

Please note: Our walk is not the Three Capes Track self-guided walk run by Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service. For information for this walk call 1300 827 727.
