Rakim Mayers was born on the 3rd of October 1988 in New York, USA. He started rapping when he was eight years old and after years of intense personal hardship became A$AP Rocky, one of the true renaissance men of modern Hip-Hop.

I’m going to assume that most musicians would kill for the career that Rocky has had. At a mere 26 years of age he’s already one of the hottest rappers in the world, a prolific producer, an experienced director, head of his own record label (ASAP Worldwide) and not to mention his own clothing line.

The term “he has the world at his feet” was seemingly coined for him and his collective, the A$AP Mob, and fewer artists have earned the right to success quite like he has. Every rapper needs to have a “rags to riches” story to be taken seriously these days and Rocky’s is a doozy.

Born in Harlem, New York City, Hip Hop was a part of Rocky’s DNA from the start; he was named after Rakim from East Coast legends Eric B. and Rakim, after all. However, when he was twelve his father was sent to jail on drugs charges, a year later his older brother, who taught him how to rap, was murdered.

This led to a long period of homelessness, where he and his mother would move from shelter to shelter and by 15, Rocky was selling Crack Cocaine to get by. One he and his mother moved to New Jersey, he joined the nascent A$AP Mob, and the rest, they say, is history.

Working with the Mob gave him all the exposure he needed to achieve the astonishing feats he’s reached in his seven year music career. The most exciting part is that’s it’s still beginning, and the best has very much yet to come with this once in a generation talent.

A$AP Rocky was perched at the top of a three-story church pleading with the “Holy Ghost” as his millennial choir echoed his prayers back at him. The 26-year-old rapper from Harlem, New York might claim to have his own relationship with God, but it’s no secret that he also maintains his own cult. Those faithful followers were more than happy to “turn the fuck up” in order to provide Rocky with the energy he needed to get through his performance last night. He spoke about some mysterious “battle” when he performed at the Ogden Theater a few years ago, but he was fighting something different this time around; he was fighting the flu. Although it’s not uncommon to see someone puke at Red Rocks, usually that someone isn’t the headliner. Rocky is a fighter though. So when the sickness crept up on him, he just spit that shit out and continued on with his set. In fact, although it was a slightly abbreviated set, it was far superior to what I witnessed at the Ogden last time around. Flu symptoms aside, Rocky and the present members of his A$AP Mob have found their stage legs in the past few years. It might seem ridiculous to call A$AP Rocky a professional (he is the same guy who started brawling with the crowd at SXSW in 2012), but I think anyone who comes out and not only does their job, but does it in style (while deathly ill), is deserving of the denotation. Rakim Mayers, better known by is stage name of A$AP Rocky, is an American rapper and Hip Hop artist. A$AP Rocky, before he became the hip hop legend, suffered years of hardship whilst young and living in Harlem, New York. He reinvented himself and was rewarded for his hard work with a blooming career as a hip hop artist. A$AP Rocky is one member of the A$AP collective, a whole team of rappers and hip hop artists. Joining the A$AP mob launched Rocky’s career and gave him his chance to start over and reach for the stars. Rocky’ struggles are evident in his voice when he raps, and by what he raps about. His music is incredibly raw and real, with deep emotion and pain. He is a breath of fresh air away from the normal rapper who mindlessly raps about ‘bitches’ and ‘hoes’. The atmosphere at an A$AP gig is pure madness: everyone from ghetto to suburban kids turned up and people were going mental for the music. It was fun and exciting, the crowd dancing so hard that it had the air of a flash mob about it. Rocky took the mic for ‘Peso’ and the crowd went wild, crowd surfing him as he rapped. It was a fantastic night all round.

I went to see both A$AP Rocky and Wiz Khalifa at the Genting arena during their European tour. Me and a friend got there early enough to be stood two or three people from the front. The supporting acts were decent, Chevy Woods failed to get the crowd going as much as Wiz Khalifa did, however they succeeded in the purpose of getting the audience hyped. Wiz had the longer set and despite having a reputation for being one of the world's biggest stoners, he was lively and really succeeded in getting the crowd going. He sprayed champagne on me and my friend.

I did not primarily come for Wiz however, I was more curious to see what A$AP had in store. He had the shorter set, which took a little while to get going as he stood behind some sort of curtain for a good ten minutes. However, when the show got into full swing Rocky and the Mob got the crowd jumping and at one point, moshing. I feel that A$AP could have maybe played a few more tracks as some of my favourites were missed. But overall, I would recommend anyone go and see them, as I had an amazing time!

Rakim Mayers, otherwise known as ASAP Rocky became one of the most exciting new artists in US hip hop in 2013 when his debut album 'Long. Live. ASAP' topped the billboard chart and made waves all over Europe. A confident, high level of rap and hip hop earned the album critical acclaim and his status increased dramatically.

Now the rapper has a crew and live show to support the credentials. From the opening beats of 'Long Live ASAP' the crowd are treated to a demonstration of world-class new hip hop. The setlist blends so well due to the frontman's ability to freestyle yet when he does break to appreciate the adoration, the response is huge from the audience. Big tracks such as 'Wild For The Night' receive massive cheers as the group perform this massive hip hop track with intensity.

Most of the time, the frontman ends up crowd surfing following a huge performance of finale 'Fuckin' Problems' and this was no different as ASAP launches himself as the audience enthusiastically carry him around the venue whilst continuing to dance along.

This show was so live! I am very satisfied with my purchase. Vince Staples opened & he killed it. I even more of a fan now, he is really one on the come up. Danny Brown performed next and OMFG he lit the crowd up. Mosh pits went off which doesn't bother me but I wish the people who choose to announce that whoever doesn't want to be by it get out of the way.. But it was lit. Rocky came out and performed JD which was dope as the first song he preformed. He played his new shit, some old. nearly all of the ASAP mob was there they preformed hella hoes which got everyone hypppeeeee af

Flacko and Danny did 1 train which was a dream come true. They even played nirvana

Everything about this show was such an amazing experience, great crowd too. Love these three together so happy they're on tour together

The doors supposedly were supposed to open at 6:30. The show was listed as 8pm. The doors were not open until 9:15, while it was 10° outside. NOT COOL. I seriously couldnt feel my toes, fingers, my body was trembling through the first song! I arrived at 8 expecting the doors to be open, and tag in the back of the line. I was towards the front and still waited for an hour and a half to get in. Once inside tho I was amazed by the venue, (it was my first time to the armory) and rocky was just as beautiful as expected. Seriously cold tho, like might think twice the next time a show is at this venue.

The concert was amazing when it started! The stage set ups and changes were all very exciting! But the delay of the concert and waiting in the freezing cold for 3 hours was not the greatest part, when I did dress in layers. The cold got unbearable I almost had to leave. I had to leave early and only saw 15 minutes of A$AP because the last train left st 12:45. Since it was so delayed and was more delayed in between acts I did not get to see much of my favorite artist. He is an inspiration and icon to me and I wish I could of stayed. Other then the delay and cold it was amazing while it lasted!

Terminal 5 really screwed over the fans and most of us waiting about 3 hours in the freezing cold (below freezing temperature and wind) to get into the venue. So unfortunately that happened. Once there, the vibe was popping and there was such good energy all around. A$AP was a bit too amped, shall we say, to give his full set so he only ended up doing a couple songs with the Mob supporting. We only saw 1.5 hours of music which was disappointing but what I did get to see was awesome.

A$AP Rocky is one of the best performers I have seen!! He puts on an astounding show and you are able to see how much time and effort went into it. Every piece during the show was put together well and incorporated the theme in every aspect onstage. I also loved the fact he played his favorite songs by other artists and even BROUGHT THEM OUT, such as Tyga and Drake. A$AP Rocky's concert was a great experience and I highly recommend going to one if he comes to a city near you.

Unfortunately our A$AP experience was poor because of Terminal 5 and other factors. We had to wait over 1 hour and a half in 6 degree weather due to reasons that were never explained to us. A$AP and his boys only come on for 20 minutes - midnight curfew. Those 20 minutes were dope and rowdy, but what a shame.

At certain points during last week’s Yams Day—the fourth iteration of a concert that pays tribute to late A$AP Mob co-founder A$AP Yams—the scene at the Barclays Center more closely resembles a professional wrestling match than a star-studded hip-hop show. Sure, the crowd is primarily of sub-drinking age, and almost universally dressed in the logos so intimately associated with contemporary rap fandom: Off-White, VLone, Supreme, Yeezy, and The North Face. They are there to see the night’s headliner, A$AP Rocky , and whichever “special guests” the A$AP Mob organizers promised would materialize throughout the event. But A$AP Yams was a devoted WWE fan, so the in the center of the Barclays floor there’s a wrestling ring, and as the fans stream in an undercard fight between semi-pro wrestlers Bryan Idol and Gabriel Skye gets underway.

In front of a sold-out crowd of 19,000, as underground Chicago producer-turned-rapper Icytwat bobs and weaves around them to a trap beat, Idol and Skye trade facebusters and chokeslams. Various Soundcloud rappers dripping in iced-out chains hang near the ropes, egging them on. Finally, as Skye lies prostrate on his back in the center of the ring’s massive smiley face-emblazoned mat, the ref raises Idol’s chiseled arm in victory. That is, until A$AP Rocky, wearing Jordan 1s, fluorescent pink Needles x AWGE track pants , and a long white VLone tee materializes right next to Idol—and drops him with a Stone Cold stunner. The ref raises Rocky’s fist. Barclays shakes to its foundation. (According to Idol, the move was not pre-planned.)

Yams Day fell right in the middle of A$AP Rocky’s headlining tour behind Testing , the Harlem MC’s fourth album. The homecoming was a showcase not just for his wrestling moves but what he does best: shake up a tightly-packed club, theater, or even arena until it explodes. Rocky’s tour hews to the post-Soundcloud trend that has seen rappers incorporate elements of punk rock into their sound, style, and performance. So while the Harlem rapper hasn’t fully embraced Lil Uzi’s Hot Topic anti-fashion or the hardcore intensity of Lil Pump’s sound, his first tour in three years has a distinct emo flavor: it’s dubbed the “Injured Generation” tour. Inspired, Rocky says, by fans who have gotten hurt at previous shows, the Injured Generation is no cautionary tale; it’s an instruction manual for how to party through the pain. Onstage at Barclays, when he repeatedly directs the kids on the floor to open up the mosh pit, they happily oblige—and crash right back together when Metro Boomin drops the next track. At one point, with Ski Mask the Slump God screaming into the mic behind him, Flacko himself dives off the top rope into the crowd.

After the show, which included surprise sets by Meek Mill and Soulja Boy, whose “Crank That” performance almost caused a riot, Rocky bounds into his green room, where a large airbrushed backdrop—the late A$AP Yams at a strip club—is hung on the wall. The night’s custom Off-White and Cactus Plant Flea Market merch is in boxes under a catering table spread with boxes of almonds, Doritos, and, notably, water—Rocky is currently experimenting with sobriety. “Who brought out Soulja!?” Rocky yells, jumping up and down in front of an assembled crew that includes Bloody Osiris , Lil Yachty, A$AP Ferg, and Rocky’s mother. “I DID!”

As the Hennesey is poured into Dixie cups and blunts fattened up on any available flat surfaces, Rocky retreats to a coat closet. The lights don’t work, so as the door swings closed everyone with an iPhone on them flicks on the flashlight. Rocky throws on a fresh T-shirt and leans back in his chair. Despite having been on stage for over four hours, he looks like he could do it all over again.

GQ: You’ve been on tour for two weeks now. Did tonight feel different for you? What's your energy like right now? A$AP Rocky: I gained it from the crowd, bro. It's really not a cliché, it's true. You really can gain or possess or kind of borrow or take energy from other people. Obviously energy is like particles and people take it for granted and shit like that. You can't see the molecules, atoms and protons, neutrons and all that shit, you can't see it right now. But it exists, right? And essentially, we're all made up of this energy that's just compressed all together, right? I swear to God, if it wasn't for that crowd and if it wasn't for them being lit, I would've sucked tonight. [ Laughs .] That's it.

Tell me about the concept of “Injured Generation.” Injured Generation is a metaphor. It pertains to physically injured motherfuckers and emotionally injured people, which is our generation.

Are there people that you've met over the years who are injured who helped bring you to touring around this idea? Yeah, it was inspired by me feeling emotionally discouraged after I put out my album and I felt like the masses didn't get it at the start. I kind of forgot that's the same thing that happened with my album prior: I put it out, people fucked with it, and then throughout time people are, "Oh my god, this is a masterpiece." And I guess initially, I was like, Man, did my crowd, did my cult following forget how to mosh? How to slam dance, how to fucking crowd surf, how to go all out? I mean obviously I'm the pretty motherfucker but for real, I like to go crazy in a mosh, that's what I came here for! As soon as I got here, I went straight to the mosh pit, I didn't even come in this dressing room.

But I met one kid on tour who lost his legs after a rave that I threw.

You did a video with him, right? He passed out on the subway? Because he was so fucked up.

How did you get in touch with him? Did he reach out to you? He wasn't trying to sue nobody or nothing, he just wrote about it and Hadji Films showed me, he was like, "Yo, look at this kid, he was at our rave," and reached out and just made it happen. His story inspired it, it was more of an example, and we donated to his GoFundMe, and on top of that, we’re doing a charity event to give away the cars [three vintage BMWs and Mercedes suspended above the Barclays stage], and donating the proceeds to him and two other injured people.

So do you have tips for moshing safely? Yes. If you wanna mosh safely, leave your panties at home.

Do you have a pre show ritual that you do every time? Most of the time we pray. I pray with the gang. Sometimes like I need to go to the side and use my asthma pump and get some water and shit, some chapstick but other than that I don’t need nothing but the crowd's energy.

What have you tried to level up on this tour compared to last tours? I'm extra dialed-in. I'm not a control freak but I'm adamant about executing what we render or what we design or mock up on the computer and whatnot like that. So I just need to see it executed the same way in reality. I haven't done an A$AP Rocky tour in three years. And I wanna see how my generation reacts to it, and when I come out, you don't know how they're gonna react, and that energy ... like I'm selling out arenas and shit bro, and it just makes me so happy. For real, bro. Eight years, man. You know what I'm saying?

I hear you're sober so far in 2019—how's that been going? It’s been 18 days. I'm sober right now, my head is on straight, man, I'm happy to be here, I'm high off life, bro. I'm also trying to cut out all the sugars and shit. When I turned 30, my metabolism sloooowed way down. And on top of that, the weed was just having me fucked up bro, honestly. But Imma get back on it. You gotta focus for a minute. [ Raps ] Sometimes I even stop the smoking when it's time to focus.

Do you see yourself trying to keep sobriety going for a while? A year. 2019.

Do you wonder whether that will affect your creativity at all? Nah. It's totally separate. I feel like people cope or use drugs as a vice. That's they own demons and shit like that, but I would say if you gotta depend on it, that means that you're not really talented to begin with. When you really on your journalism shit, I'm quite sure you probably popped an Adderall before but I don't think you depend on that shit, do you?

No. Exactly! I did it for very selfish reasons, I'm not gonna lie. For me. Just to really focus, honestly just to focus. The Backwoods is not good for me. I felt like I was addicted to that shit and I just needed to try something new. I'm a Libra, man. Honestly, I'm impulsive so who knows, in eight months I might be like, Alright, this shit is stressing me out! But I'm good. To kids who do drugs, man, do them safely, bro.

What have you been up to after the shows? If you're not drinking, are you just chilling out instead of partying? Orgies.

Orgies . Foursomes, fivesomes, moresomes. All womens.

Which city has had the best orgy so far? Toronto.

Tell me about your new track “Babushka.” It was inspired by a situation I had where my face got cut, and I started walking around with a Babushka to cover it. It was about last September. It started with a yellow one when I was on Trevor Noah's show. I actually did a Vogue shoot the day after I got my face slashed.

How'd you get it slashed? It's like the Joker, I got stories for each individual who asks. You wanna know? You really wanna know?

Yeah, I really wanna know. I was riding a Razor scooter, I did a pop up wheelie and just ate shit and I just had a fucking big gash on my face. Had to get plastic surgery and here we are.

Can we get a fact check on this? [ Joker voice ] Why so serious? Honestly, it was inspired by Alfalfa—you ever see the Little Rascals, when he pretended to have a toothache? I kind of wanted to make it look like that. Basically on some shit so in case Trevor Noah asked me, I was just gonna be like, “I have a toothache.”

Did he not ask? Nah, he acted like it wasn't even there, it was just an elephant in the room.

Are you sort of sad on some level to be missing fashion week for the tour? Fuck no. I'm always allocating my times to fucking fashion. Look at me now, Needles x AWGE [Rocky’s creative agency] collaboration that's not even out yet. Fucking Yams VLone tee. Fucking Cactus Plant. Fuck that.

Tell me about the custom Prada gear you're wearing on tour. Why'd you pick Prada of all your brands? Because I love Prada. I'm a Prada boy. Everybody only knows about my love for Dior, my love for Loewe, my love for JW Anderson, my love for Raf, for Rick Owens, for Gucci, for Louis, but they don't know—I'm really a Prada boy. Everything that I do just gets oversaturated as we know, right? That's the gift and the curse. And I just figured I should just flex that shit lowkey. So I wear hard bottom Prada shoes with no logo, no monogram so you don't know. I wear shit here and there, but I just keep it lowkey, I love Prada, they’re my favorite brand.

So what did you develop, was it a full wardrobe custom? Yes. Everything. I have a different outfit for every night, and some of them I wanna repeat, so it’s kind of fucked up.

How are you choosing which one to wear before each show? I have my assistant line up all my clothes and I pick out a fit.

Tell me about the nylon pants with the flames. I thought of that! They need to sell those, right? So the whole tour was designed by this guy—you know the guy who does Hi Mum I’m Dead? Pauly, from Australia? He did our VLone stuff, he works with AWGE internally, does a lot of installations. He was with Ksubi and he did all the cool Ksubi shit and made it lit. He would do custom Ksubi for me and Rihanna back in the day all that I've known him since like 2012. And basically, Pauly, around 2016, he would make these flame, then Vans made Flames and all that shit, whatever the case is but it was really to imitate that. [Prada] did the best they could and I love it.

And Imma just say it, fuck it, I'm about to pop off Jeremy Scott and make that popping, all his old shit. I’m talking bout like a lot of his Adidas collaboration shit like from '08, '09, 10 years ago, '07, flex up, you feel me?

A$AP Rocky announced that his new album is finished before taking the stage to perform some new songs at Amazon Music Live Thursday night (Dec. 8).

He made the PSA during Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime Video. “Thursday night football. Amazon. My first time back on the stage. Album’s finished, Don’t Be Dumb . Let’s go!” the rapper exclaimed. Rocky later returned to the screen for those watching Amazon Music Live at home, the streamer’s live concert series hosted by 2 Chainz , to perform four unreleased songs from Don’t Be Dumb as well as some fan-favorite classics such as “Everyday,” “Yamborghini High” and “Lord Pretty Flacko Jodye 2 (LPFJ2).”

Rocky also brought out rapper $NOT to perform “Doja,” AWGE hip-hop duo THOTTWAT for their joint “Shirt” performance, and host 2 Chainz to run back their Billboard Hot 100 No. 8 hit “F–kin’ Problems,” which also features Drake and Kendrick Lamar.
