A Look At The Goo Goo Dolls’ Summer 2022 Tour With Blue October (Videos Included)

With over 15 million albums sold worldwide, four GRAMMY Award nominations and over a dozen Top 10 hits charting at Hot AC radio — reportedly the most Hot AC-charting singles of any artist in history — the rock band known as The Goo Goo Dolls has been doing things at a high level for over 25 years. Its latest studio album is 2022’s Chaos In Bloom , as released last month via Warner Bros. Records and featuring the also-played-on-the-radio singles “You Are The Answer” and “Yeah I Like You.”

On August 19, 2022, The Goo Goo Dolls — as led by Johnny Rzeznik and Robby Takac and founded in 1986 — returned to the Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater for the first time since 2019. The group’s 23-song set opened with the earlier-mentioned “Yeah I Like You,” which then led into a spirited rendition of mega-hit “Slide.” While The Goo Goo Dolls’ show was hit-heavy, the band has released so many charting singles over the last three decades that some of the expected songs were missing from the performance (e.g. “Long Way Down,” “We Are The Normal,” “Only One,” “All That You Are,” “Before It’s Too Late”). The evening ultimately closed with a fun cover of Tom Petty’s “Runnin’ Down A Dream.”

Supporting The Goo Goo Dolls, with a huge fanbase of their own, was the Texas-based Blue October . Founded in 1995, Blue October — as comprised of frontman Justin Furstenfeld, multi-instrumentalist Ryan Delahoussaye, bassist Matt Noveskey, drummer Jeremy Furstenfeld and guitarist Will Knaak — first found major success with 2006’s Foiled , which yielded the hits “Hate Me” and “Into The Ocean.” Plenty more hit singles came from album’s like 2013’s Sway , 2015’s Home and 2018’s I Hope You’re Happy . The band’s 50-minute set largely leaned on the band’s charting singles, although the group also performing the recently-released single “Spinning The Truth Around,” which is slated to be part of Blue October’s upcoming “two-part double album”; the first half of this album is slated for an October 2022 release. The set closed with a cameo by Longwave’s Steve Schiltz on “I Hope You’re Happy.”

Goo Goo Dolls, a band that rose from the punk scene in Buffalo, New York, penned several of the most definitive hits of the ’90s. Forming in 1985, the Goo Goo Dolls experimented with hard rock before landing on a winning formula that incorporated elements of acoustic and alternative rock for 1995’s A Boy Named Goo . The album yielded the band’s first Billboard 200 chart placement at No. 27 and its unlikely third single “Name” climbed to No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1998, the band vaulted to global ubiquity with “Iris,” a ballad written for the City of Angels soundtrack that later ushered in their quintuple-platinum sixth album Dizzy up the Girl . The song remained atop the former Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart for 18 weeks, a record that stood until 2020. The Goo Goo Dolls solidified their stratospheric success with the equally catchy follow-up single “Slide,” which hit No. 8 on the Hot 100 and was certified platinum itself. In 2002, Gutterflower earned the band their highest Billboard 200 peak at No. 4, while 2006’s Let Love In added more catalog highlights like “Better Days'' and a cover of Supertramp’s “Give a Little Bit.” Founding members Johnny Rzeznik and Robby Takac have toured extensively across the 2010s while maintaining a steady output of new projects, including 2019’s Miracle Pill and 2022’s self-produced Chaos in Bloom .

The venue has a count down clock due to our strict noise ordinance so the band has to stop when it runs out. They went on 45 minutes late and had to stop abruptly when the clock ran out. The performance was good but we felt short changed.

Favorite is Iris

I thought it was awesome. The music was fantastic, the Venue at Thunder Valley was very nice, beautiful. Wonderful experience!!

Fun and Nostalgic

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I booked my tickets for this concert. I bought them on a lark since I had always liked The Goo Goo Dolls sound from back in the day and enjoyed hearing them when they would pop up on the radio nor listening to my music devices. Plus, I was interested in checking out The Venue. Of course, I was familiar with the popular songs (Iris, Name, Broadway) but did not even know they had put out a new album a couple of years ago. So, expectations were not set high for the concert. But they were really good. And even though I wasn’t familiar with a lot of the songs, lead singer, John Rzeznik’s vocals…when he could remember the lyrics (he comically fumbled a couple of times)…made even the least familiar song worthwhile. Neither I nor those who accompanied me to the concert were as fond of the songs sung by Bass Guitarist, Robby Takac. But it didn’t make the experience unenjoyable. The Dolls brought a lot of energy, humor, openness (especially about low points that inspired songs like Sympathy) and a really good vibe. If you get a chance to catch them in concert…do it. It’s a fun way to spend an evening reminiscing and hearing some catchy new songs.

The band was on point, sounded great and you could tell they were happy to be there. The crowd was amazing and it was a fantastic night. The GGD never disappoint, I've been attending shows of theirs for over twenty years (yikes) and there is no place I'd rather be than at a show.

The Venue at Thunder Valley Casino. The Venue was great. Good visibility and sound everywhere. John can still sing great, voice is actually smoother now. Got super tired of the his using the F-word, ruined some great songs. Made us enter the smokey casino 100 yards away from the Venue like cattle when there were plenty of other places to enter. That alone would make me think twice about going to another concert there.

Fun concert

It was a wonderful concert. A mixture of old and new songs, some popular others not familiar with or new. What I enjoyed most was learning the stories behind some of the songs.

5th Time seeing the Goo Goo Dolls. Great set list of songs, with a mix of songs from just about all their albums. Had a great time. They sounded great and the band is exceptional.

Bands was Great, The Venue Needs Improvement in a Few Areas

I really enjoyed The Goo Goo Dolls actual performance. This was my family’s 3 or 4th performance at The Venue. Areas of improvement for The Venue that I’d greatly like to finally see- 1- Allow guests to enter/exit at the clear door right in front of The Venue. This is especially important for those with heath issues such as having an asthmatic family member, those who just can’t stand the strong smoke-as in having it stained into your hair/on your clothes, those who are freezing or baking from the weather and those with dressy concert shoes on and don’t want to walk unnecessarily extra far in them. It’s so annoying that The Venue forces everyone to walk past the sidewalk entrance (right next to The Venue’s concert entrance/exit), all the way down to the casino entrance, then back through the smokey/crowned casino just to get back next to The Venue’s entrance that you were just at. Afterwards you must repeat all of this just to get back to the parking area past the street light. It would be GREAT if concert parking wasn’t a few blocks away and in the actual parking lot like The Hard Rock allows for their concert goers. It’s time to finally stop this forced attempt at making your concert goers spend money in your casino. 2-Start performances on time/closer to it. Don’t just cater to those who arrived late and are still in line for alcohol. 3-Try to do something about what absolutely drives me nuts at casino shows, particularly at The Venue. I’ve noticed that many of those present have no idea who they are even seeing and have to get up and walk in front of you CONSTANTLY during the PERFORMANCE to pee or get more booze. To top it off, they can barely even do that at The Venue without greatly invading your personal space because the seat rows are so close together. I wish more actual concert fans-who came to see the band and not just drink excessively, had access to tickets well before these people, like w//presales on the artist’s official sites. Those folks just interested primarily drinking should just stay in the bar/casino and not detract from true fans concert experiences. 4- At our last 2 shows in a row now, the LOUD/drunk/rude/clueless people behind us would not shut the hell up during 3/4 of the show. Even during slow songs or when the band was talking. Have ushers do something about this and/or maybe do a cute little video before the shows (like theaters do), or limit alcohol sales to hopefully help these stupid people so they aren’t constantly interrupting/detracting from my concert experience that I paid a lot for. 5-Merch-Have more than ONE, TINY booth for merch sales, more salespeople and do better at hiring polite employees who are not rude and rushing customers. The one booth line is often insanely long with only 2 salespeople helping. Although with this concert since they were only selling 2 items (?!) it wasn’t the longest I’ve seen at The Venue. 6-Ticket prices- This is hit or miss at The Venue. For Duran Duran, it was ridiculously high even for the upper balcony. For that same section (balcony-front row even) last Aug., I paid way less at Golden One to see them. 7- Have The Venue staff directing traffic at the concert area parking lot after the show. It took us FOREVER to exit the lot and would have gone much quicker w/ parking attendants.

I've seen them 27 times and this was one of their best shows!

Goo Goo Dolls never disappoint. John Rzeznik put on an amazingly energetic performance. Of course Robby and the rest of the band were awesome as well. The only disappointment is when they started to play Iris…..only because this signifies that the concert has come to an end and I will begin to have withdrawals until I can get my next live Goo fix. Hopefully the Goo Goo Dolls will continue to create new music and perform for many more years.

  • 08/24 Wednesday | 7:00 PM

Event Details

Formed in Buffalo, NY during 1986 by John Rzeznik and Robby Takac , Goo Goo Dolls quietly broke records, contributed a string of staples to the American songbook, connected to millions of fans, and indelibly impacted popular music for three-plus decades. Beyond selling 15 million records worldwide, the group garnered four GRAMMY® Award nominations and seized a page in the history books by achieving 16 number one and Top 10 hits— "the most of any artist . ” As a result, they hold the all-time radio record for “Most Top 10 Singles . ” Among a string of hits, “Iris” clutched #1 on the Hot 100 for 18 straight weeks and would be named “#1 Top 40 Song of the Last 20 Years . ” Thus far, A Boy Named Goo [1995] went double-platinum, Dizzy Up The Girl went quadruple-platinum, and Gutterflower [2002] and Let Love In [2006] both went gold as Something for the Rest of Us [2010] and Magnetic [2013] bowed in the Top 10 of the Billboard Top 200. 2016’s Boxes attracted the praise of People and Huffington Post as Noisey , Consequence of Sound , and more featured them. Their music has been covered by everyone from Taylor Swift to Leona Lewis. Among many accolades, John received the prestigious “Hal David Starlight Award” in 2008 as well.

Following a sold-out 2018 twentieth anniversary tour in celebration of Dizzy Up The Girl , Goo Goo Dolls wrote and recorded their twelfth full-length album, Miracle Pill [Warner Records]—igniting a bold and bright new era in the process. In fall 2020, the band began a new chapter with the debut of their first-ever holiday LP It’s Christmas All Over , and most recently released their brand new compilation record Rarities ; a double album filled with rare and never-before-heard songs from the band’s career spanning 1995 to 2007. With over 30 years together as a group, over 15 million albums sold, and 16 number one and Top 10 hits, Goo Goo Dolls remain at the top of their game and in a league of their own among rock bands as they record their highly anticipated thirteenth studio LP.

Blue October Tour Locations

Blue October has been on the tour scene since 1997. Through their career, the band has played many shows with various artists includinging Bob Dylan, 3 Doors Down, Goo Goo Dolls, and more. The band’s live shows have been praised for their intense and emotionally charged songs and lyrics as well as how well they mesh with their fellow musicians.

In addition to their regular tours, Blue October has also been a part of several music festivals including “Rock on the Range”.

The band has toured extensively throughout their career and have played shows with various artists, including Staind, Bob Dylan, 3 Doors Down, Goo Goo Dolls, and more. Blue October is known for its live performances and is praised by critics for its intense and emotionally charged shows.

In addition to their regular touring, Blue October has also been a part of several large music festivals, including Rock on the Range, Austin City Limits Music Festival, and more. The band is currently on tour supporting their latest album, Sway.

In the early years, the band performed rare scattered performances, with only 8 concerts from 1997 -2001. But soon after the band began doing more concerts with 27 concerts in 2003. Many of these early concerts were held in the United States, with arguably the most successful concerts being in and around Texas venues.

One of the busiest periods for Blue October came during the 2004-2007 period where the band performed over 250 concerts combined. And this was later matched by the 2012-2015 period of concerts, which had some of their most well-received performances. During the 2012-2015 period they played 200 concerts.

Starting in 2018, the band had been playing over 100 shows a year, which may have continued into the past few years. However, the global pandemic slowed the band down with only 39 concerts during 2020.

But Blue October came back swinging in the past two years with 77 concerts performed in 2021 and 67 concerts played or scheduled in the 2022 season. And these concerts include a legendary show at the Tulsa Theater on December 18, 2021 as well as a show with the Goo Goo Dolls on AUgust 7, 2022 at Sterling Heights’ Michigan Lottery Amphitheater.

Photos and Live Review: SOLD OUT Goo Goo Dolls and Blue October at Red Rocks Amphitheatre 7/27/22

googoodollsredrocks (13)

Goo Goo Dolls returned to Red Rocks Amphitheatre for a sold out show on July 27th, with support from Blue October.

It was a perfect summer evening for a show at the greatest outdoor venue ever, with the temperature steadily in the 70s and a nice breeze flowing. Fans of Houston’s Blue October got there early to see the band’s set at 7:30, which featured a great mix of songs from Blue October’s extensive catalog.

“Coal Makes Diamonds,” from 2016’s breakthrough album  Home,  started things off as lead singer Justin Furstenfeld strutted across the stage, a wide smile on his face as he looked out at the 10,000 fans in attendance.

It was Blue October’s well-deserved first performance at the iconic venue, and it was obvious that the members of the band were elated to be there. As a fan since 2006, I was also elated to see them there! The set also included tracks from latest album This Is What I Live For , such as “Oh My My,” “Fight for Love,” “Moving On (So Long),” as well as the title track. Old school fans got to hear Blue October classics such as “Say It,”  “Into the Ocean,” and “Hate Me,” with the catchy “I Hope You’re Happy” ending the set, and then it was on to The Goo Goo Dolls.

After a whopping 36 years together, John Rzeznik, Robby Takac and company are still going strong with a new album titled Chaos in Bloom,  to be released on August 12th, 2022. The lead single from the album “Yeah, I Like You” started off the band’s set, which continued with hits such as “Slide,” “Here Is Gone,” and the beloved “Black Balloon,” during which many black balloons drifted down over the audience, who had a ball bouncing them back and forth.

Rzeznik and Takac where undeniably fun to watch throughout the night, their camaraderie shining during every song.  “Naked” and “Name” took fans all the way back to 1995’s  A Boy Named Goo , while “Lucky Star” was a major throwback to 1993’s  Superstar Car Wash , with Takac on lead vocals. The band’s biggest hit to date, “Iris,” had the entire crowd singing along, before the night was over much too soon with “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” a Tom Petty cover.

Goo Goo Dolls, Blue October slide into Cadence Bank Amphitheatre in Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday, August 28, 2022

  • August 29, 2022
  • International Concert Reviews
  • by Elliott Gordon Photographer/Assistant Editor

Nestled within the historic Chastain Park in northern Atlanta, the Cadence Bank Amphitheatre played host to the Goo Goo Dolls on a steamy Sunday night. With a posted capacity of nearly 7,000, this summer-months-only outdoor facility was opened back in 1944 and has been decreed as “Atlanta’s Oldest Outdoor Music Venue.” Perhaps apropos to the venue setting, the veteran rockers are out on the road promoting their latest and fourteenth studio release, Chaos in Bloom , while being supported by Texas-based Blue October .

Starting the evening off around 7:30pm with “Coal Makes Diamonds,” the opening track from their eighth studio release Home , was alt-rock band Blue October. Formed in 1995, the band is currently composed of singer/guitarist Justin Furstenfeld, Jeremy Furstenfeld (drums), Ryan Delahoussaye (multi-instrumentalist), Matt Noveskey (bass) and Will Knaak (lead guitarist). I will embarrassingly admit that somehow Blue October had seemingly fallen through my musical net over the years, but one is easily drawn into the passionate and personal messages delivered within their melodic and energetic songwriting.

In fact, doing a little research on the band, I came to learn that many of Furstenfeld’s song lyrics were developed through an auto-biographical lens, including themes that dealt with the struggles of addiction and a bipolar disorder. Arguably their most well-known song (nearing 100 million views on YouTube), “Hate Me,” speaks to how depression and drugs damaged the relationship Furstenfeld had with his girlfriend. That isn’t to say that their set was littered with gloomy, depressing music – in fact the opposite. Blue October’s songs were insightful, intelligent, and looked to deliver upon a message of hopefulness. As irony would have it, I received a Facebook notification just this morning that Blue October would be returning to Atlanta in early December, so I am looking forward to another opportunity to catch them live later this year.

With the sun finally set and the evening temperatures a bit more tolerable, Goo Goo Dolls founding members John Rzeznik (guitar/lead vocals) and Robbie Taykac (bass/vocals) took to the stage shortly after 9:00pm to a loud and welcoming capacity crowd. Backed by touring members Brad Fernquist (guitar), Craig Macintyre (drums), and Jim McGorman (keyboards), the band launched into the first track off their new album, “Yeah, I Like You.”

Having sold over 15 million records that helped garner four Grammy Award nominations, it goes without saying that the Goo Goo Dolls owned radio airplay during the back-half of the nineties, and I fully expected (and hoped) that the night would be filled with the nostalgia hits of that era. The band delivered immediately with their second tune, performing an energy-lifting rendition of the 1988 chart-topper “Slide” from their sixth studio album, Dizzy Up the Girl .

The 21-song setlist (posted below) was a deep cross-section of their musical catalog, appealing to a crowd that saw many families in attendance Sunday night. Immediately recognizable hits such as “Naked,” “Black Balloon,” “Name,” and “Broadway” were scattered throughout the amazing song choices for the night, with strong vocal performances from both Rzeznik and Taykac. In a light-hearted moment midway through the set Rzeznik joked that “they were going to play some new songs, so gentlemen, if you have to go pee, do it now.” You could hear the laughter lead into the performances of “War” and “Going Crazy,” two of the new tracks off Chaos in Bloom which was only recently released back on August 12th.

The main setlist was closed out by a deafening performance of the Goo Goo Dolls’ signature song, “Iris.” You can watch the video below, but I can assure you there wasn’t a single person not singing along with Rzeznik. It was such a lively conclusion to the show that you almost didn’t want it to be followed by an encore. However, they did return to the stage after a brief break to play two more songs, including wrapping up the concert with a cool Tom Petty cover of “Runnin’ Down a Dream.”

The Goo Goo Dolls head to Sugar Land, Texas, on Tuesday, and continue on across the country through the end of November. This band is not to be missed, playing at a high level with a wonderful song mix that celebrates their appreciated past while supporting their more recent musical releases.
