Which to ride? The many cruising boats found on Tokyo's waterways.

The watercraft which come and go through Tokyo’s rivers and along the waterfront range from small dinghies to massive liners. There are almost as many boats as there are ways to enjoy them, from the water bus, with a design from the not-too-distant future, to the yakatabune pleasure boats which brim with the spirit of old Tokyo. Trying out the many riverboat cruises is just one way to enjoy your time in the city.

A network of riverboats, or water buses, serve Tokyo Bay and the Sumida River connecting Odaiba and Asakusa. The different cruise lines follow slightly different routes, but all offer prime views of Tokyo landmarks such as TOKYO SKYTREE, Rainbow Bridge, and the unusually-shaped Asahi Group Headquarters Building. Taking the route from Kasai Rinkai Park to Odaiba, you will be able to see the Tokyo Gate Bridge, Tokyo Bay, and planes arriving and departing from Haneda Airport. Regular Water Bus Routes

Manga and anime artist Leiji Matsumoto was inspired by the image of a teardrop when designing this futuristic-looking cruise boat. Himiko Line

Also the work of Leiji Matsumoto, Hotaluna was designed to look like a spacecraft. The design includes a viewing deck, and at night the ship lights up the Sumida river with a firefly-like luminescence. Hotaluna Line

Go back to old Japan in a yakatabune. These uniquely Japanese party boats are a reminder of Tokyo’s forgotten past. At night, when the paper lanterns are lit, the riverboat takes on an eerie, ethereal atmosphere of the old city. Not only available for private rental, but some Yakatabune offer shared tours. As dusk falls, dinner cruises set sail along the Sumida River and out to Tokyo Bay for views of the glittering skyline. There are a variety of cruises and operators, but dinner cruises tend to be popular and will need to be reserved in advance. Non-regular Routes

Easy Access to Popular Places

Tokyo’s waterways are a fantastic way to reach popular places in the city. Cruise the rivers and bay, free from traffic or train transfers. Regularly scheduled boats connect Odaiba and Asakusa, and you can board from tourist destinations in between. (As of June 2023, you can depart at Hama-rikyu Garden but you cannot board there.) Tokyo, a city famed for its vibrant streets and rich history, also boasts a lesser-known aquatic side. The city's heart is cradled by Tokyo Bay and the Sumida River , which have been central to its development and culture. These waters are not just busy trade routes but also home to the 'suijo bus' or water buses. More than just a mode of transport, these water buses offer unique views of Tokyo and sometimes, culinary delights. Let's dive into the world of Tokyo's stylish water buses, blending sightseeing with gourmet experiences on its historic waterways.

Tokyo Cruise – The Standard of Tokyo’s Water Buses

Tokyo Cruise, the emblematic name in Tokyo's water bus service, is synonymous with the scenic journeys along the Sumida River . It connects key locations such as Asakusa with Hinode Pier in Hamamatsucho, Toyosu, and Odaiba Kaihin Park . Today, Tokyo Cruise operates several routes to cater to different interests. The Sumida River Line makes the journey from Asakusa to Hinode Pier, right where the river meets Tokyo Bay. For those looking to explore further, the Odaiba Line connects Hinode Pier directly to Odaiba Kaihin Park . Additionally, the Tokyo Big Sight & Palette Town Line offers a route from Hinode Pier to two of Odaiba 's attractions: Tokyo Big Sight and Palette Town. One of the conveniences of these water buses is that they do not require prior booking. With frequent departures, they provide a seamless and enjoyable way to experience Tokyo's sights from the water. Whether you're traveling between Asakusa and Odaiba or exploring local landmarks , these cruises offer a laid-back sightseeing adventure. While the Asakusa - Odaiba course is particularly recommended for sightseers, it is good to note that Hamarikyu Gardens and Toyosu (home of the Toyosu Fish Market) are also destinations reachable from Asakusa , though there is a limited number of daily departures. For an enhanced experience, the Sumida River Line features an audio guide available for 300 yen in English, Chinese, and Korean. This guide highlights some of Tokyo's iconic landmarks visible from the water, like Tokyo Skytree (R) and the Rainbow Bridge, offering a unique perspective of Japan's bustling capital from aboard a Tokyo Cruise.

The Himiko line ferries passengers from Asakusa to Odaiba Seaside Park and Toyosu , offering a direct link between these bustling districts. The Hotaluna, on the other hand, operates from Asakusa to Odaiba Seaside Park , making a stop at Hinode Pier en route. Aboard the Himiko, travelers are treated to more than just scenic views; an onboard café serves unique sweets and cocktails, enhancing the journey with flavors as adventurous as the vessel's design. Additionally, an audio guide features characters from Leiji Matsumoto's celebrated work, Galaxy Express 999 , enriching the experience with a touch of interstellar fantasy. Finally, special seasonal cruises are also available (see the website here ). In spring , from March 30 to April 3, you can enjoy a cherry blossom cruise in Tokyo. These may be only available via online reservation ahead of the desired cruise date.

The Tokyo Mizube Line is another favorite among both locals and tourists, known for its extensive network of stops. It boasts eighteen boarding points along the Sumida River , stretching from Asakusa to the far reaches of Azusawa and Itabashi , and even to the Saitama prefectural border. Additionally, the line extends along the Arakawa River , reaching as far as Kasai Rinkai Park in Edogawa, showcasing the eastern side of Tokyo. The convenience of no-reservation boarding and the availability of an English audio guide on board make the Tokyo Mizube Line an appealing option for easy and informative sightseeing along Tokyo's scenic waterways.

The Tokyo Mizube Line operates three main routes. The Asakusa / Odaiba Cruise travels between Asakusa and Odaiba , offering six stops including Sumida Kuyakusho (City Hall), Ryogoku Rivercenter, Etchujima, St. Luke’s Garden , and Hamarikyu Gardens for flexible boarding and alighting. The Asakusa / Kasai Cruise takes you from Ryogoku upstream to Asakusa , then downstream towards Odaiba Seaside Park , and onwards to Kasai Rinkai Park in Tokyo's east, home to attractions like an aquarium and a Ferris wheel. Lastly, the Odaiba Kasai Tour connects Kasai Rinkai Park with Odaiba Seaside Park , traversing a wide swath of Tokyo's bay area. Both the Asakusa Kasai Cruise and the Odaiba Kasai Tour offer views of the Tokyo Gate Bridge, a stunning 8-kilometer-long structure that spans Tokyo Bay, a sight best appreciated from the water on the Tokyo Mizube Line.

Functioning similarly to traditional taxis, these water taxis offer personalized service across four key areas: Shinagawa , Tsukiji , Nihonbashi, and Asakusa , catering to passengers' specific destinations on demand. Tokyo Water Taxi provides three enticing options for visitors looking to explore the city's waterways. The Basic Ride - Direct Plan is ideal for those seeking flexibility, allowing unlimited rides over seven days (weekdays only) across 19 different stops, including Tennozu Pier and Toyosu. Conveniently, you can summon a water taxi with a call or online request, similar to hailing a land taxi. This service supports English, Chinese, and Korean, making it accessible to a wide array of travelers. For a more expansive experience, the Basic Ride - Custom Plan offers extended access beyond seven days, including weekends. It features 27 boarding and alighting points, providing passengers the liberty to disembark at any desired location spotted during the journey. This plan is perfect for personalized itineraries, allowing detours and tailor-made cruise tours. The Basic Ride - Recommended Plan caters to those looking for a spontaneous adventure, operating between Tamachi and Tennozu Pier on Wednesday and Friday nights. The Sumida River Cruise (Sumida Line) is a great way to travel between Asakusa and the Tokyo Bay Area. You’ll see a totally different side of Tokyo and you’ll get a break from subways and trains.

The Sumida River Cruise (Sumida Line in Japanese) connects several piers around the Tokyo Bay Area (Hinode, Hama Rikyu, Nihonbashi, Odaiba and Toyosu) with Asakusa (which is convenient for Senso-ji Temple and close to the museum district of Ueno, as well as Tokyo Sky Tree).

You’ll experience a totally different view of the city from the river and you’ll be reminded that Tokyo is indeed a port city. Three futuristic boats ply a variety of routes and stop in different places. Check the English-language website (below) for full details.

From water sports to sightseeing and dinner cruises, here’s how to explore another side of the metropolis through these scenic waterways.

Yakatabune Amitatsu

• Things to do

Centuries ago in Japan, yakatabune were the pleasure boats of wealthy merchants, aristocrats and military leaders, and they were lavishly decorated, often with tatami mats and low tables for dining. Nowadays, these traditional wooden longboats are seeing a revival as private entertainment vessels for groups to enjoy Tokyo’s night scenery over food and drinks.

However, this doesn’t mean yakatabune are off limits to casual tourists. Yakatabune Amitatsu, which has been in business for over a century, also caters to couples and smaller groups on one of their eight ships, all equipped with a sky deck. Make a booking for the Odaiba-Skytree Cruise, which takes you from Tokyo’s heritage centre, Asakusa, to the modern pleasure island Odaiba. The two-and-a-half-hour cruise comes with a bar and a Japanese dinner that includes tempura and sashimi, and there’s a vegetarian option, too (pre-book during reservation).

In spring, Amitatsu also offers a special sakura tour that takes you to some of Tokyo’s most picturesque riverbanks, all flanked by cherry blossoms.

Keihin Ferry – Factory Night-View Cruise

The Yokohama cityscape is picturesque, but you’re really here for the ‘Blade Runner’-esque vista in the neighbouring city of Kawasaki. The Keihin Factory Zone, to be specific, is made up of massive industrial units, power plants, warehouses and cranes set along canals – and come nightfall, the steely industrial zone is all lit-up, creating post-apocalyptic scenery that looks like it’s lifted straight off a sci-fi flick. It’s a mesmerising sight, especially with the vista reflected in the water.

The 90-minute night cruise departs from Osanbashi Pier, located between Yokohama’s Minatomirai waterfront and Chinatown. It’s a small group on a small boat that’s all the better for navigating through the narrow canals.

Funaasobi Mizuha

A boat ride into the past, Funaasobi Mizuha introduces you to the city’s history through the four main rivers in Tokyo: Nihonbashi, Kamejima, Sumida and Kanda. During the 90-minute tour, you’ll discover the ancient stone walls of the old Edo Castle, historic bridges and railway-related heritage sites, plus ancient waterways excavated about 400 years ago, which go to explain how and why Tokyo is really a city of water.

It’s an illuminating journey that reveals a side of Tokyo few visitors get to appreciate. There’s a knowledgeable English-speaking guide on board and you can bring along food and drinks for a little picnic on the boat. Each reservation comes with a small souvenir and guide to Tokyo’s waterways.

Symphony Tokyo Bay Cruise

This is not your standard tourist tootle out-and-back, but a relaxing sightseeing cruise that gives you a brand new perspective on the city. There are multiple sessions from morning to night, taking you out to Tokyo Bay for spectacular views of the iconic Rainbow Bridge, the bustling man-made island Odaiba – which is known for its shopping malls and amusements – and Haneda Airport.

You might just want to enjoy the cruise, but you can turn it into a waterborne meal at one of the boat’s restaurants; options range from French and Italian to Japanese cuisines and there’s even an international buffet. Otherwise, there’s a bar if you want to drink in the view with, well, an actual drink. Park yourself on the open deck and watch the buildings parade past like an architectural catwalk show.

Tokyo no Kaba

Every major city seems to have its own gimmicky duck bus, including Tokyo, except here it’s reimagined as the ‘Hippo of Tokyo’ (Tokyo no Kaba). Popular with kids, the journey starts on land in Odaiba and hits the water with a huge splash, with an enthusiastic tour guide narrating as you go. The bus-boat takes a leisurely journey through Tokyo Bay, passing Odaiba Beach, the Rainbow Bridge and the futuristic architecture of the Fuji Television headquarters.

Tours run during daylight hours but adults will appreciate the sunset on the last tour of the day. It might be a trip catering to children, but we’re all kids again when the bus-boat splashes into the water.

Tokyo Great Kayaking Tours

You’ve explored Tokyo by train, on foot, possibly even on two wheels – but what about on water? Tokyo Great Tours lets you travel by kayak and see the city from its canals and rivers. Beginner-level to advanced courses have kayakers paddling under historic bridges, beside train tracks and on the Sumida River, where you’ll get an unparalleled view of Tokyo Skytree. At some point you’ll want to lay down your paddle, lean back and realise you’re floating in the middle of Tokyo.

We recommend ‘Route C’ for beginners: you’ll paddle under highways and the historic Nihonbashi Bridge, and see Tokyo Skytree. You’ll also be a sight to behold yourself: wide-eyed salarymen will wave at you from bridges and fascinated children will point from boats. Hopefully you’ll stay upright for the duration – but as an experience it’ll capsize your whole image of Tokyo.

Yokohama SUP Club

Stand-up paddleboarding, or SUP, has grown from its humble origins in Hawaii to become an international sport. Home to Chinatown and the Minatomirai waterfront, Tokyo’s seaside neighbour Yokohama has an SUP scene of its own, with the Yokohama SUP Club educating both beginners and more serious SUP paddlers, and hosting events and a monthly river clean-up.

The certified guides and instructors will teach proper form and paddling techniques so you’re not too sore the next day. You’ll stand-up paddle down the Ooka River, which empties into Yokohama Bay, and see famous sightseeing spots like the Landmark Tower and the giant ferris wheel Cosmo Clock 21 along the way.

Canyons Okutama

White-water rafting? Been there, done that, and so last decade. Adrenaline junkies can now immerse themselves in the water with only a helmet and a life jacket by canyoning, a relatively new adventure sport that uses natural canyons as a real-life adventure park. Tour operator Canyons offers the two-hour Big Holy Canyon tour, where you’ll slide down waterfalls up to 25m tall, zip-line down rivers and jump off precipices from a height of six metres, all in the middle of Okutama ’s lush nature (Okutama is just 90 minutes from central Tokyo).

Looking for a bigger rush? Combine it with a packrafting tour and speed down the white water of the Tama River. However, if you prefer to ease into something less strenuous, opt for the relatively milder Holy Canyon tour – the jumps aren’t so tall and you’ll have time to chill in the river. Be aware that under-13s cannot participate in the Okutama tours; they can, however, join the rafting tours in Minakami, Gunma prefecture.

Sports Club Zac

Morning workouts might sound drab while on holiday, but how about exercising while seeing Tokyo from water? Sports Club Zac offers stand-up paddling (SUP) tours for beginners and advanced paddlers – you’ll give your arms and core a good workout as you paddle through Edogawa’s Kyunaka River and get a rare view of Skytree without the crowds. Nihombashi Cruise

Historical boat ride on tokyo’s rivers.

Nihombashi Cruise is a boat ride on the Sumida River, starting from its pier at Nihonbashi bridge located in the center of Tokyo. The tour offers a new type of exploration of the Japanese capital through its waterways, large and small.

Boats furrowing the Sumida River are not limited to the shuttles connecting Asakusa to Odaiba and include some that navigate the capital’s rivers on the traces of a long-lost past when Edo used to be a Japanese Venice . You will find one of this history boats quietly moored to its pier under the famous Nihombashi Bridge, in the central Chuo ward. Of a small size, it can accommodate up to fifty passengers and can therefore sneak in almost everywhere.

The cruise starts on the Nihonbashi River, in other words Tokyo ’s waterways . Today, channels flow into concrete waterways, but their banks used to shelter many small shops with stalls directly accessible from the water. Then, the boat proceeds to sail away the historical center towards Odaiba and the Bay, giving new perspectives on the ever-changing Tokyo.

From the water, one is overwhelmed by the numerous bridges and skyscrapers, and most impressed by the iconic Rainbow Bridge . The boat slips along several renowned touristic places, such as Tsukiji Outer Market and the marvelous Hamarikyu garden , of which one can spot the tops of its pine trees. A little bit further lies the bustling Toyosu Island where Tokyo’s new wholesale fish market opened in October 2018. The former industrial facilities of the area are slowly replaced by modern buildings dedicated to leisure activities or accommodation such as the Olympic Village built on Harumi Wharf for the 2020 Olympic Games   🏅 .

Aboard a ship whose size drastically contrasts with the urban landscape’s vertical hugeness, the hair blowing in the wind, one can imagine Tokyo’s maritime life, sometimes discreet, almost forsaken, sometimes exuberant and vivifying. By the way, bringing protection from the sun in summer , and from the cold in winter is highly recommended.

The Sumida River is Tokyo's best known river and is a great place to see as visitors to the Japanese capital, offering numerous cruise options, and dotted with a medley of photogenic bridges.

Sumida River, Tokyo 隅田川

The Sumida River ( Sumidagawa ) is one of Tokyo's main rivers, and the most familiar Tokyo river to visitors to the city. The Sumida River starts directly north of Tokyo, then goes out eastward through eastern Tokyo.

The river branches off the larger Arakawa River at the Iwabuchi Watergate in Tokyo's Kita ward, and goes about 24 km down to Tokyo Bay via Adachi, Arakawa, Sumida, Taito, Koto and Chuo wards. 

There are 37 bridges on the Sumida River, most of them for road traffic, but there are several train bridges, a pedestrian bridge, and a pipe bridge, as well. Most of the bridges across the Sumida River join Taito ward (west bank) with Sumida ward (east bank). (Note that the  kanji  for the Sumida river 隅田川 and for Sumida ward 墨田区 are different.)

Sumida River Walk

If you've ever taken the train from Tobu-Asakusa station to Nikko, you'll certainly remember the magnificent view, especially in the morning and evening, of the Sumida River just after departure. Since summer 2020, it has also been possible to enjoy this view without taking the train, as a pedestrian path, called the Sumida River Walk , has been built under the iron railway bridge. In addition to the varied views of the river and cityscape, this also shortens the walk from Asakusa to the Tokyo Skytree, especially if you walk along the Kitajukken River. You also pass Tokyo Mizumachi, a new open-air shopping mall, as well as restaurants and cafés directly on the Kitajukken, beneath the railway line.

The Sumida River branches off the larger Arakawa River at the Iwabuchi Watergate in Tokyo's Kita ward, and goes about 24 km down to Tokyo Bay via Adachi, Arakawa, Sumida, Taito, Koto and Chuo wards. The stretch of the river that gets the most tourist traffic is between Taito and Sumida wards , only about 2.5km east of the Imperial Palace, and just a short train ride from Tokyo Station .

Sumida-gawa is around 160 m wide at this point, and you naturally get a much better impression on foot than by briefly looking down from a train window. While trains cross the bridge upside down, the wooden plank path, accessible between 7 and 10 p.m., stretches to the side. In some places, glass panes have been embedded in the floor, to create a glass floor for viewing the river through the glass. A sign reading "Yumi Katsura Lover's Sancturary", also allows love padlocks to be affixed to the fence.

The Sumida River promenade is therefore an ideal place for couples in love, especially at sunset, and of course for long-married people. The walkway is fully wheelchair-accessible, thanks to low-angle ramps.

The Sumida River Promenade links the two parts of Sumida Park , stretching along both banks of the river. Very popular, and not just during the cherry blossom season, the southern part of the park has been redeveloped with numerous family-friendly amenities.

Sumida River Attractions

Along its length are numerous sights and attractions. The Asakusa district in Taito ward, served by the two main Tokyo water cruise companies' ferries, is famous for its bustling old-time Tokyo atmosphere and ancient, picturesque Sensoji Temple . The towering, elegant Tokyo Skytree in Sumida ward, offering unparalleled panoramas of the metropolis, and lots of fun shopping, is accessible from the same point in the river, a little east from Asakusa, over Azuma Bridge.

A few minutes by boat south of Asakusa you glide past the  Ryogoku  district - the heart of  sumo wrestling  in Japan , with its green hexagonal-roofed Kokugikan Stadium, and, behind it, the excellent  Edo-Tokyo Museum . Futher down near the mouth of the river is the elegant, green oasis of  Hamarikyu Garden , which many ferries serve.  Odaiba , even further downriver where it meets Tokyo Bay, is a broad, spacious island offering various enjoyable ways to spend your time in Tokyo.

The  Sumida River Fireworks Festival  happens towards the end of July on the stretch of the river between Shirahige Bridge and Ryogoku Bridge. This is the biggest of Tokyo's fireworks festivals and is extremely popular with the locals. However, unless your idea of fun is hours waiting in a hot crush of people for a 90-minute display that, while spectacular, is an hour and a half of being tightly stuck in a dense crowd while bossy marshals' megaphones constantly blare, then it is best enjoyed from afar.

Tokyo Mizumachi, for food and shopping

At the southern end of the park, beneath the Tobu-Isesaki railroad line, lies the Tokyo Mizumachi . In fine weather, you can even sit out in the open air, right on the water's edge, for a bite to eat or simply a cup of coffee. The canal-lined Kitajukken connects the Sumida and Kyunaka rivers, which in turn flows into the great Arakawa River. There are currently 13 stores, restaurants, cafés and even a youth hostel below the railway line. The Kontent design boutique is a must-see, as some of the products it sells cannot be found in other stores. For a good cup of coffee, it's worth stopping off at Deus Ex Machina Asakusa or Muya . Fans of Japanese sweets and desserts will be delighted at ichiya. For a hearty lunch or dinner, Shake Tree Diner, LAND_A and Jack's Wife Frida are three other stops offering Western cuisine. For those wishing to choose from a wider range of number of restaurants, nearby Solamachi, below the Tokyo Skytree, offers a vast choice.

Thanks to the many available  Sumida River pleasure cruises , the most easily accessed section of the river is from Asakusa southwards. The sightseeing highlights of the Sumida River are the Tokyo Skytree and the many bridges, varying in color and design, that span the Sumida. The Sumida River also provides easy access by sightseeing cruise boat to the shopping and amusements of the Toyosu district in Tokyo Bay.

The Himiko & Hotaluna

Asakusa to Hamarikyu

This cruise takes about 35 minutes to reach the Hamarikyu Gardens, a landscaped public park with a pond and traditional tea house. The admission fee for the gardens is included in the fare for the cruise. There are between eight and ten services a day on this route between 9.50 and 15.20. Regular fares are 980 yen for adults and 370 yen for children.

This cruise takes about 40 minutes to reach Hinode Pier. This location is convenient for two stations: Hinode Station for the Yurikamome Line and Hamamatsucho Station for the Tokyo Monorail and JR East’s Yamanote and Keihintohoku lines. There are around 20 services a day on this route between 9.50 and 19.15. Regular fares to Hinode Pier are 780 yen for adults and 390 yen for children. There are also some Hotaluna services which cost 1,080 yen for adults and 690 yen for children.

Asakusa to Odaiba Seaside Park

This cruise takes about 70 minutes to reach Odaiba Seaside Park. Here you can enjoy a walk on the beach, plentiful shopping and dining facilities, and scenic views over Tokyo Bay. There are around 18 services a day on this route between 9.50 and 17.30. A transfer may be necessary at Hinode Pier. Regular fares are 1,260 yen for adults and 630 yen for children. There are also some Hotaluna and Himiko services on this route which are priced at 1,560 yen for adults and 930 yen for children. These services are a little faster than regular servies; the Hotaluna takes 60 minutes and the Himiko takes just 50 minutes to cover the same distance.

There are two regular Himiko services to Toyosu which depart from Asakusa Pier at 13.20 and 15.10. The Himiko takes about 70 minutes to reach Toyosu. The main attraction here is the Lalaport shopping mall, which includes a cinema, and restaurants as well as shops (many of which offer tax-free shopping to overseas visitors. Tokyo Gas Science Museum is also nearby. Fares on this route are 2,040 yen for adults and 1,170 yen for children. These services to Toyosu do not run between January 15th and February 5th.

The Asakusa Pier is easily accessible as it is just a 3 minute walk from the Tobu, Toei, and Tokyo Metro Asakusa Stations. Inside the Tokyo Cruise building, cruise tickets can be bought from automatic ticket machines. These machines have English guidance but staff will be happy to help you out if you need assistance. There is also English signage throughout so that you know where to wait for your boat.

The coronavirus pandemic had a severe impact on the water buses, and services remain considerably reduced compared to pre-corona times. On the most popular lines, departures can be close to hourly, but on many other sections, there are only few connections per day, and service is completely suspended on certain days.

Most of the water buses are operated by the Tokyo Cruise Ship Company . Its main line connects Asakusa with Odaiba . Besides direct connections, some boats stop along the way at Hama Rikyu (in the direction of Hinode only), Hinode and Toyosu (in the direction of Asakusa only). There are also 30-minute mini cruises, which start and end in Asakusa. The cost depends on the section traveled and is typically between 1000 and 2500 yen.
