Morocco travel & tours

Where the sahara meets the sea.

Beaches and Berbers, medinas and mosques, souks and sand dunes... Morocco has variety and an exotic feel that has fascinated travellers since long before the modern traveller arrived. Affordable and only a short ferry from Spain, Morocco's mix of traditional and modern strikes the perfect balance between the intensely exotic and comfortingly familiar. Cities like Fez, Marrakech, and Casablanca evoke images of medinas, spice markets, and couscous, while the geographic extremes – from the Atlas Mountains to beach resorts to camels in the desert – make it eminently photogenic. The mad circus of Marrakech's Djemaa el Fna square, packed with incense, salesmen, and snake charmers, is so bizarre and entertaining you'll be looking for the hidden camera.

Morocco travel reviews

Morocco tour photos from our travellers, recommended tours, the best ways to pay for services in morocco.

The local currency in Morocco is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). ATMs are very common in Morocco with Cirrus and Plus system cards are the most widely accepted debit cards. While ATMs are commonly available, there are no guarantees that your credit or debit cards will actually work - it is important you check with your bank before departure and advisable to travel with more than one type of card. Visa cards are the most widely accepted credit cards, but are generally only useful for larger/expensive purchases. You should be aware when purchasing products or services on a credit card, that a fee usually applies. The foreign currency most commonly accepted in Morocco is the Euro. You will be able to exchange Euros, as well as GBP and USD at money exchange offices in major cities. Do not rely on credit or debit cards as your only source of money. A combination of cash (Euro/GBP or USD) and cards is best.

Tips on tips

Some reasonable suggestions on how to tip the staff

Small service providers

$ 3 usd/day.

A recommendation for tipping small service providers (such as restaurant and bar waiters, hotel staff, reception, cleaning personnel, bell boys, taxis and van drivers) is about $3 USD per day, depending on the quality of the service (this does not include your G Adventures CEO).

G Adventures CEO

$ 35 to $ 40.

At the end of your trip if you felt your G Adventures CEO did an outstanding job, tipping is also expected and appreciated. The precise amount is entirely a personal preference, however $35-40 USD per person per week can be used as a general guideline.

Packing for Morocco

You will be on the move a lot, so our advice is to pack as lightly as possible. We highly recommend using a backpack or light sports bag, whichever you find easiest to carry, plus a small daypack. Luggage space on public transport is limited. You must be prepared to carry your own bags and be comfortable carrying them between transport and hotels (max. 15-20mins walking), hopping on and off trains and public buses and up and down stairs.

There are four distinct seasons in Morocco, and depending where in the country you are planning to visit, the time of year can make a big difference. Generally speaking, spring (February to May) and fall (September to November) are the best times to visit for a majority of the country, however if you are heading into the High Atlas Mountains, it is often better to aim for summer months. See below for a full explanation of Morocco’s different seasons to decide when is best for you.

REVIEWS FROM OUR CLIENTS

I knew this trip would be great but it was BEYOND MY WILDEST DREAMS! What an exciting, exotic, beautiful, and diverse country. I loved the High Atlas Mountains, so exceptionally scenic, the cities, medinas, and the sights, sounds, and aromas. The people were very friendly and gracious. Marrakesh is a happening, fun city and coastal Essaouira is pretty and peaceful. I loved it all!
Morocco was wonderful and we loved the trip, which was extraordinarily well-designed as usual for Wilderness Travel. When we compare WT itineraries and experiences to other companies, we consistently find that WT provides unique access to sites that other companies might ignore. There is a commitment to a complete, special experience that we appreciate.
The trip, itinerary, guides (main guide and every location guide), our driver, hotels, venues we stopped at along the way and everything else far exceeded our expectations. I have visited almost 50 countries and we both agree that Morocco is on the top of our lists.
Truly a wonderful, once in a lifetime trip. It was fascinating to go from an incredibly modern city like Casablanca to Berber desert camps in the Sahara. Everything was handled perfectly—we never had to worry about a thing!
An amazing range of sites, landscape, activities: the desert trek was a really unique experience that I’ll remember always; the mountain landscape was gorgeous; visiting Essaouira gave us a taste of the coast; everything was well organized but allowed flexibility.
It was our 13th WT trip and we were not disappointed. We continue to be loyal clients because of trips like this.
This was my first group ‘adventure travel’ trip and it exceeded all my expectations. I could not have enjoyed so many aspects of Moroccan life and culture had I been traveling on my own.

Morocco is Europe’s gateway to the African continent and as such oozes exotic charm and adventure whilst also being extremely accessible for those wanting to test the waters before heading further inland. With stunning cities, immeasurable history and culture, delicious food, a beautiful coastline and the threshold to the Sahara desert , the real question is why shouldn’t you visit? Spoiler alert: You should.

The medinas in Fes and Marrakech are a labyrinth of artisanal wares, foods, spices, clothes and magic carpets that you’ll just love getting lost in. Whereas the medina of Marrakech is the most famous and overwhelming, Fes (a UNESCO world site) is far less intimidating.

Essaouira isn’t on everyone’s list but should be: not only is it a beautiful coastal town with surfing for days, but it also holds medina charm with all the chill vibes you’d expect from a Surfer’s paradise. With rumours of regular visits from the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Cat Stevens, the locals are very proud to tell you that "Castles Made of Sand" is said to be inspired by the ruins of the Borj El-Berod watchtower.

Chefchaouen is as beautiful as everyone says and the photos show. It is well worth a visit to the Andalusian quarter (interestingly, the only part of the city that is blue) to feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale land, and get some amazing shots.

For the adventurous, try desert treks into the Sahara , water sports and surfing in Essaouira, and trekking and mountaineering in the Atlas Mountains .

Is Morocco a safe country to visit?

Morocco is generally considered a safe country to visit for tourists. The Moroccan government places great importance on ensuring the safety and security of visitors. However, it's always wise to exercise common sense and take precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip. Here are some important points to consider regarding safety in Morocco:

Low Crime Rate: Morocco has a relatively low crime rate, particularly when it comes to violent crimes against tourists. However, like any travel destination, it's important to stay vigilant and take precautions to protect yourself and your belongings.

Tourist Police: Morocco has dedicated tourist police who are present in popular tourist areas to assist visitors and maintain security. They can provide guidance, assistance, and emergency services if needed.

Petty Theft: As with many tourist destinations, petty theft and pickpocketing can occur, particularly in crowded tourist areas, markets, and public transportation. It's advisable to take common-sense precautions such as keeping an eye on your belongings, using a money belt or secure bag, and avoiding displaying expensive items openly.

Scams: Like in any popular tourist destination, there may be occasional scams targeting tourists. Be cautious of anyone offering unsolicited help or trying to sell you goods or services at inflated prices. Use reputable tour operators and official guides to avoid falling victim to scams.

Solo Travellers: Morocco is generally safe for solo travellers, both male and female. However, solo travellers should exercise the same precautions as they would in any foreign country, such as avoiding isolated areas at night and staying in well-lit and populated areas.

Political Stability: Morocco has maintained political stability compared to some other countries in the region. The government has implemented measures to ensure the safety of visitors and has a strong focus on tourism as an important sector of the economy.

Health and Hygiene: It's always advisable to take necessary health precautions when traveling to any country, including Morocco. Ensure you have up-to-date vaccinations, drink bottled water or use a water purifier, and practice good hygiene.

While Morocco is considered safe, it's important to stay informed about the latest travel advisories and follow any recommendations or warnings issued by your government or relevant authorities. Additionally, researching and respecting local customs, traditions, and laws will contribute to a more positive and safe travel experience in Morocco.

When is the best time to visit Morocco?

The best time to visit Morocco largely depends on your preferences and the specific experiences you seek. Morocco has a diverse climate due to its varied geography, which includes mountains, coastlines, and deserts. Here's a breakdown of the seasons to help you determine the best time to visit:

Spring (March to May): Spring is generally considered one of the best times to visit Morocco. The weather is mild and pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). It's a great time to explore cities like Marrakech, Fes, and Rabat, as well as enjoy hiking in the Atlas Mountains. The landscapes are lush and vibrant, and you can witness the blooming of flowers and blossoms.

Summer (June to August): Summers in Morocco can be quite hot, especially in inland areas and desert regions. Temperatures can soar above 40°C (104°F), making sightseeing and outdoor activities challenging during the day. However, coastal cities like Essaouira and Agadir offer a refreshing escape with milder temperatures and sea breezes. If you plan to visit the Sahara Desert, be prepared for scorching temperatures during the day but cooler nights.

Autumn (September to November): Autumn is another excellent time to visit Morocco, especially in September and October. The weather is pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F). It's a great time to explore the imperial cities, trek in the mountains, and visit the desert without the extreme heat of summer. The autumn landscapes are also quite beautiful.

Winter (December to February): Winters in Morocco are relatively mild, especially along the coast. However, inland areas and the Atlas Mountains can experience colder temperatures, with some regions even seeing snowfall. Coastal cities like Casablanca and Tangier are popular during this time due to their milder climates. If you're interested in winter sports, the Atlas Mountains offer skiing and snowboarding opportunities.

It's worth noting that Morocco is a year-round destination, and each season has its own unique charm and experiences. However, considering the weather, activities, and crowds, spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are generally considered the best times to visit Morocco. These seasons offer pleasant temperatures, comfortable conditions for exploring, and opportunities to witness festivals and cultural events.

The visa requirements for Morocco vary depending on your nationality and the duration of your visit. Here are some general guidelines regarding visas for visiting Morocco:

Visa-Free Countries: Citizens of many countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and most European Union countries, can enter Morocco visa-free for tourism purposes for up to 90 days. This means you can visit Morocco for leisure, sightseeing, and other non-work-related activities without needing a visa.

Visa on Arrival: Some nationalities, including citizens of certain African and Asian countries, may be eligible for a visa on arrival. This allows you to obtain a visa upon arrival at the airport or land border crossing. The visa on arrival is typically valid for a shorter period, usually up to 30 days. It's advisable to check with the Moroccan embassy or consulate in your country of residence to confirm if you're eligible for a visa on arrival.

Visa Requirements for Longer Stays: If you plan to stay in Morocco for more than the permitted visa-free period or for purposes other than tourism (such as work or study), you will likely need to apply for a visa before your trip. It's important to contact the nearest Moroccan embassy or consulate in your country to obtain the most up-to-date and accurate information regarding visa requirements, application procedures, and any supporting documents you may need.

Passport Validity: Regardless of your nationality, your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your intended departure date from Morocco. Ensure that your passport has sufficient blank pages for entry and exit stamps.

It's essential to check the visa requirements specific to your nationality and the purpose and duration of your visit to Morocco. Visa regulations can change, so it's always best to consult with the Moroccan embassy or consulate or seek advice from a qualified travel agent or visa service to ensure you have the necessary documentation before you travel.

What is the currency in Morocco, and can I use credit cards?

The official currency of Morocco is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). Here's some information about using currency and credit cards in Morocco:

Moroccan Dirham (MAD): It's advisable to carry some Moroccan Dirhams in cash for smaller expenses and places that may not accept credit cards. Currency exchange services are available at international airports, banks, and authorized exchange offices throughout major cities. It's recommended to exchange money at official exchange offices or banks to ensure you receive a fair exchange rate. Avoid exchanging money with street vendors or unauthorized individuals.

Credit Cards: Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, upscale restaurants, larger shops, and tourist establishments in major cities such as Marrakech, Casablanca, and Fes. Visa and Mastercard are the most commonly accepted cards, while American Express and Discover may have more limited acceptance. It's always a good idea to carry some cash as well, as smaller businesses, local markets, and remote areas may prefer cash payments.

ATMs: ATMs (Automated Teller Machines) are widely available in major cities and towns throughout Morocco. They accept major international debit and credit cards, allowing you to withdraw cash in Moroccan Dirhams. It's advisable to use ATMs located within banks or reputable establishments for security purposes.

Notify Your Bank: Before traveling to Morocco, inform your bank or credit card provider about your travel plans. This helps prevent your cards from being blocked due to suspicious activity when used in a foreign country. It's also a good idea to note down the emergency contact numbers of your bank or credit card provider in case you need to report a lost or stolen card.

Cash Tips: Tipping in Morocco is customary, especially for services such as restaurants, hotels, and guides. While it's not mandatory, it's a common practice to leave a tip of around 10% of the bill or a small amount for services received. It's advisable to carry some small denomination notes for tipping purposes.

Currency Exchange Restrictions: Upon departure from Morocco, there are restrictions on taking Moroccan Dirhams out of the country. You can exchange your remaining Dirhams back to your home currency at international airports or authorized exchange offices before leaving.

Remember to exercise caution when using credit cards and ATMs to protect yourself against card skimming or fraud. Keep an eye on your card during transactions and use ATMs located in secure and well-lit areas.

Overall, having a combination of Moroccan Dirhams for cash transactions and a credit card for larger purchases or emergencies will help ensure you have convenient access to funds during your trip to Morocco.

Do I require any vaccinations to visit Morocco?

Before traveling to Morocco, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional or travel medicine clinic to get personalized advice based on your specific health condition and travel plans. However, here are some commonly recommended vaccinations for travelers visiting Morocco:

Routine Vaccinations: Ensure that your routine vaccinations, such as measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (DTaP), polio, and influenza, are up to date. These vaccinations are generally recommended for all travelers regardless of the destination.

Hepatitis A and B: The hepatitis A vaccine is recommended for all travelers to Morocco, as the virus can be contracted through contaminated food and water. The hepatitis B vaccine is also recommended for long-term travelers, those engaging in activities that may involve exposure to blood or bodily fluids, or anyone who may have intimate contact with the local population.

Typhoid: The typhoid vaccine is recommended for travelers who may consume food or drinks from potentially contaminated sources, particularly in areas with poor sanitation and hygiene practices.

Rabies: Rabies is present in Morocco, and the vaccine may be recommended for travelers who plan to spend a lot of time outdoors, engage in activities that increase the risk of animal bites, or visit remote areas where medical assistance may be limited.

Meningococcal Meningitis: While the risk is generally low, the meningococcal vaccine is recommended for certain travelers, particularly those visiting during the dry and dusty months from December to June or attending large gatherings or events.

Yellow Fever: A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for travelers coming from or transiting through countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission. However, Morocco itself is not considered a yellow fever-endemic country.

It's important to note that these recommendations may vary based on factors such as your age, overall health, previous vaccination history, and specific travel plans. It's always best to consult with a healthcare professional or travel medicine clinic well in advance of your trip to get the most accurate and up-to-date advice regarding vaccinations for Morocco.

In addition to vaccinations, it's also essential to practice good hygiene, drink safe water, eat at reputable establishments, and take necessary precautions to prevent mosquito bites to ensure a healthy and enjoyable trip.

Is it safe to drink tap water in Morocco?

It is generally not recommended to drink tap water in Morocco. The tap water in most parts of the country, including cities like Marrakech, Casablanca, and Fes, is not considered safe for drinking. While the tap water is treated and meets basic quality standards, the infrastructure and sanitation systems may vary, and there is a risk of contamination.

To stay hydrated and avoid potential health issues, it is advisable to consume bottled water or water that has been properly treated or boiled. Bottled water is widely available and can be purchased from supermarkets, convenience stores, and hotels.

When purchasing bottled water, ensure that the seal is intact and the bottle is properly sealed. It's also a good practice to use bottled water for brushing teeth and rinsing your mouth.

In addition to drinking water, be cautious about consuming raw fruits and vegetables that may have been washed with tap water. It's recommended to peel fruits and vegetables or wash them thoroughly with safe water before consumption.

While tap water may not be suitable for drinking, it is generally safe to use for other daily activities such as showering, washing hands, and bathing. However, if you have sensitive skin or are prone to skin irritation, you may consider using bottled or treated water for these purposes as well.

Overall, by taking simple precautions and being mindful of the water you consume, you can enjoy a safe and healthy trip to Morocco.

Is it easy to summit Mount Toubkal?

Summiting Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in the Atlas Mountains and North Africa, is a challenging but achievable endeavor for many hikers and mountaineers. Here are some key points to consider regarding the difficulty and accessibility of climbing Mount Toubkal:

Physical Fitness: Climbing Mount Toubkal requires a good level of physical fitness and stamina. The ascent involves trekking at high altitude, with the summit reaching an elevation of 4,167 meters (13,671 feet). It is essential to prepare adequately by engaging in regular cardiovascular exercise and building endurance before attempting the climb.

Altitude Acclimatization: Altitude sickness can be a concern when ascending to higher altitudes. It is recommended to acclimatize properly by spending a couple of days at lower elevations before starting the trek. This allows your body to adjust gradually to the thinner air and reduces the risk of altitude-related illnesses.

Route Options: There are various routes to reach the summit of Mount Toubkal, with varying degrees of difficulty and duration. The most common and straightforward route is the standard ascent from the village of Imlil. This route usually takes two to three days, including an overnight stay at the Toubkal Refuge. It involves hiking on well-defined paths, crossing scree slopes, and tackling some steep sections.

Guide and Equipment: While it is possible to climb Mount Toubkal independently, it is highly recommended to hire a local guide or join an organized trekking group, especially if you are inexperienced or unfamiliar with the area. A guide can provide valuable assistance, local knowledge, and ensure your safety during the climb. They can also arrange accommodation, meals, and necessary equipment such as crampons and ice axes if needed.

Weather Conditions: The weather on Mount Toubkal can be unpredictable, even during the summer months. It is essential to check the weather forecast and be prepared for changing conditions. Winter climbs require mountaineering skills and additional equipment due to snow and ice.

Overall Difficulty: While climbing Mount Toubkal is challenging, it does not require technical climbing skills. With proper preparation, determination, and the assistance of a guide or experienced group, many reasonably fit individuals can successfully reach the summit. However, it's important to be aware of your personal limitations and make informed decisions regarding your safety and well-being.

Remember that climbing any mountain carries inherent risks, and it's crucial to prioritize safety, follow guidelines, and heed the advice of experienced guides or local authorities. By adequately preparing, respecting the mountain, and taking necessary precautions, you can have a rewarding and memorable experience summiting Mount Toubkal.

What people love about Fully Guided Tours in Morocco

Our family of 5 booked this private tour. We had no good idea on what to expect, although looking back, the description said it all. Our private driver Abdou picked us up with his 9 person van from our hotel in the morning after our arrival and from that moment the adventure began. We have seen so many things during the 9 days, visited so many places. Most nights we slept in authentic Riads, one more beautiful than the other and of course there was something to criticize everywhere, but overall and without exception they were beautiful and special. We received a warm welcome everywhere with a mint tea which made our trip extra special. We spend many hours in the car driving through changing sceneries, but there was so much to see that it never got boring. The Sahara was a special experience, the overnight stay in the tent was good, but it was a shame that the camp lighting did not work due to an electricity problem. The surrounding camps were attractively lit, but ours was like a dark hole. In our opinion, this could have been solved with candlelight to create some atmosphere, but unfortunately that was not the case. Luckily the lighting did work inside the tent. Big shout out to our driver Abdou who guided us safely through the crazy traffic in the cities, but also during the many hours driving through the mountains. We felt safe and secured, he is a very skilled driver and a nice person. He was there when needed, ready to answer any question but never too much present so we spent hours in silence as well while driving. I can really recommend him. All together we had a wonderful journey, above expectations and now, 2 weeks later, we are still processing all the impressions. It was a really good trip, highly recommend it. But next time we skip Marrakech: scooters in a Medina should be forbidden! :)
Wonderful experience, More than expected, Driver hicham (Morocco tours agency) was very helpful, Local guides were knowledgeable. Great accommodations, Felt welcomed.
Bloody amazing. Best tour guide ever. Ali was amazing. Taking us from place to place. Ali even organised our laundry on our last day.

Travel With Purpose

Our team are the last generation to have grown up as children in the desert, previously practising a way of life that was unchanged in centuries. Our parents kept farms and livestock in the desert when water was freely available. That way of life became untenable more than three decades ago when the river to this region (Draa) was dammed near its source and the desert encroached on farmland.

Our responsible travel goals, purpose-driven, aim to support a very poor region of Morocco, educate visitors on the nomadic way of life, and care for our very fragile desert environment.

Moroccan-man-cooking-outdoors

  • Environment

Tourism is the mainstay in this region of Morocco. Young people normally have to move away from the local village (Mhamid El Ghizlane) to find work elsewhere.

However, we aim to put local knowledge and skills to work locally through employing local guides, local cooks, local camel-handlers and local drivers. Young men who are often the main breadwinners of their extended families will be the source of funding all living costs for 3 generations of their families.

Employing local men ensures that they in turn benefit their own community by contributing money there.

  • We pay fair wages and garner loyalty from our team through fair and equal treatment.
  • We buy all of our food from local shopkeepers. Fruit and vegetables are seasonal only.
  • We donate to animal welfare charities.
  • We aim to care for our very fragile environment and show visitors the beauty of the desert wilderness.
  • Having grown up in this region of the desert we are acutely aware of the scarcity of water.
  • We only transport enough water on our desert hikes for food preparation and hand-washing. We do not transport water for ‘showering’ which is non essential for responsible travel.  We don’t encourage desert hiking trips longer than 6 days, again to conserve water.
  • We customise desert hiking on a private basis, and certainly for group sizes no larger than 16. Most of our hiking trips are arranged for couples and individuals who want peace and quiet.
  • We encourage our visitors to collect litter whenever they find it in the desert, as we instruct our local guides and camel-handlers to do so.
  • We ask that our visitors take their litter out of the desert with them or hand it over to their guide who will bring it out of the desert.
  • We do not encourage the rental of quad biking which is harmful to the environment.
  • We offer our visitors information on the flora and fauna of the desert environment in the Iriqui National Park before they visit the region.
  • We encourage our visitors to travel by public bus to the desert frontier.   ctma.ma
  • We encourage our visitors to visit Jarjeer Mules and/or SPANA if they are staying in Marrakech.
  • We reuse paper and recycle card/plastic in the office. We do not produce printed brochures.

We aim to offer authentic, simple experiences which are unique to this part of the world. We aim to educate visitors on the nomadic way of life.

Please refer to the introduction on our background. We are passionate about sharing our nomadic background and desert experience with our visitors. The majority of our team are indigenous Amazigh, or Sahrawi (whose forebears migrated from much further south). The local guide will act as a bridge between the visitors and the cook and camel-handler.

On the desert hikes, our team wear traditional dress and we give our visitors each a desert turban to protect from the sun/wind when hiking.

Examples of the nomadic experiences we offer – walking for several hours each day accompanied by a camel caravan; preparing tea on the campfire; preparing sand-bread in the embers of the fire; singing traditional songs in the evening at camp; using the stars to navigate.

We provide detailed   Frequently Asked Questions   pages to visitors once they confirm a desert trip. We promote responsible travel/packing tips.

We encourage our visitors to visit one of the remaining ‘Ksar’ (series of earth-built dwellings) at Mhamid, on the Draa Valley. It is possible to visit a local family and take tea with them in their home, if so our guide will offer a small donation to the family.

“We booked a 14 day trip with Wild Morocco – and every moment exceeded our expectations. From the intimate riads with fabulous food to the local tours of Berber villages and tea with nomad families, we experienced the real Morocco – customs, culture, food, connections with the people.”

Morocco's four Imperial Cities

Rabat, known as “the City of Gardens”, is the capital of Morocco. This is where all the institutional and political life of the country takes place. This imperial city is located on the Atlantic coast, very close to Casablanca. One of the most cinematographic and romantic places in the world. The truth is that it is worth spending at least one day discovering the streets of the Medina, as well as its most important monuments. As, for example, the Hassan Tower, the Fortress or the Kasbah, the Necropolis of Chellah or the Mausoleum of Mohamed V.

Rabat has a curious mix of past and modernity. This has made it one of the most dynamic and mercantile cities in the country. You can start your tour at the Kasbah of the Oudayas. A citadel that houses one of the most beautiful and striking areas of the capital. Along your walk, you will see how narrow alleys open up before you to give way to beautiful white and blue klein facades, as well as gardens of French and Andalusian heritage. Just 10 minutes away is the Medina of Rabat. A perfect place to do all your shopping, of course, after the traditional haggling with the merchants.

This is the most popular and touristic city in Morocco. Its location is in the Atlas Mountains, much further south than the rest of the Imperial Cities of the country. To be honest, you will need more than one day to get to know Marrakech in depth. A complete city that is considered the Cultural Center of Morocco.

You can start your visit by taking the Medina as a starting point. This is the place where you will find the riads or traditional Moroccan palaces where you can stay. Once here, the very inertia of the streets of Marrakech will allow you to discover the beauty of unique buildings such as the Medersa Ben Youssef, the largest in the country, the Jemma el Fna Square, one of the most lively places in Marrakech or the Koutoubia Mosque of Hispano-Muslim style.

Fez is an imperial, medieval and religious city. The cultural value of its Medina Fez-el-Bali is such that it was also recognized by Unesco as a World Heritage Site. If you want to soak up all the beauty of Fez, we recommend that you extend your visit for more than one day in the city.

Start by passing the imposing Blue Gate or Bab Boujeloud that leads to the Medina. From there, you can walk, while enjoying your shopping in the souks. In your tour you will also find symbolic buildings such as the Madrasas or Koranic schools, the Nejjarine Museum of Art and Crafts or the Mausoleum of Mulay Idris II.

Visiting Meknès means breathing tranquility and authenticity. This is the last of the four Imperial Cities of Morocco, but not the least important. In fact, this is undoubtedly the city with the most Moroccan essence in all its corners. In Meknes prices are lower. So you can do all your shopping without haggling as much as in other cities. Meknès invites you to stroll through its quiet streets, which will take you to the El-Hedim Square to contemplate the wonderful Bab-El-Mansour gate, the Medersa Bou Inania and the Mausoleum Muley Ismail. There is no doubt that this is the perfect end to your Imperial route through Morocco.

What language do they speak in Morocco?

Morocco officially has two languages (classical Arabic and Tamazight), but in daily life, it is another story, it’s a mixture of languages. Most Moroccans speak Darija and Berber in addition to other foreign languages. French seems to be the second language as it is a business language in the country. Most Moroccans also speak French and Spanish in the north of the country and in the Sahara. English is very popular among the young generation and workers in the tourism industry. Visit this page to learn more about the languages commonly spoken in Morocco

What They Say About Our Marrakech Desert Trips

We booked a private tour with Desert Morocco Adventure Tours from Fes to Marrakech for 4 days. It was an absolutely incredible trip. Our guide was great and spoke English very well. My husband and I had such a wonderful time and it is one of our favorite desert trips so far. The Sahara was breathtaking and Omar let us stop as often as we wanted for photos or breaks. Thank you for an incredible experience and hopefully, we will return to Morocco one day!

Outstanding experience and excellent services ever! The places we visited during our desert tour were wonderful with beautiful scenery. The camel ride was amazing and the sunset in the desert is one of the highlights of our tour to the Sahara desert. Our guide was super friendly and helpful! The four-wheel vehicle was very comfortable and had an air-conditioning system. I strongly recommend Desert Morocco Adventure’s Marrakech 3-day desert trip!

Overland from Margate to Marrakech: An art-filled journey across France and Spain

A flight-free adventure between the uk and north africa offers the romance of slow travel alongside the opportunity to get to know some of europe’s most famous artists, finds diana jarvis, article bookmarked.

W alking along Margate seafront one evening as the colourful swash of another Turner-esque sunset melted into the sea, I began to plot my flight-free adventure to Morocco .

I usually work as a photographer, but I’d been remote working at a desk-based editorial job in an ever-lengthening contract all year and I’d saved up more than enough for a proper escape. I booked myself onto a cycling holiday and it began with a meet-up in Marrakech . I pondered, as I walked in that sunset glow, could I get there without flying?

I’d originally moved to Margate to live cheaply while finishing my MSc in environment and sustainability in late 2019 and I’d been talking the talk about flight-free and environmentally conscious travel for a while – it was now my turn to put it into action.

It’s about 2,000 miles between Margate and Marrakech and therein lies a multitude of options. To make the most of those precious few hours in each destination, I turned it into an art treasure hunt: Margate, famously, is home to the Turner Contemporary art gallery but, rather infamously, it doesn’t have any paintings by JMW Turner on display.

Many years previous, my undergraduate degree had been in art history and my formative travels were all themed around seeking out works by the artists I’d studied. This seemed like a good way to connect where I’d come from and where I was going.

My stop-off points would be other places that lay claim to famous artists: Vincent Van Gogh (Arles) , Salvador Dalí (Figueres) and Pablo Picasso ( Málaga ) and see how they compare before heading onwards to Tarifa and the boat across to Morocco .

This is how the journey unfolded.

Day 1: Margate – Marseille

The journey began in Margate, 2,000 miles from Marrakech

Long-distance rail travel is often prefaced with “romantic”. As I zipped across the hills and vales of Kent and agricultural flatlands of northern France , I realised “romance” requires a window seat. There’s nothing romantic about an aisle seat next to an almost window-less window seat. And there’s nothing “slow” about whizzing at top speed with all of France passing in a blur with tantalising glimpses of endless places ripe for exploration.

Three trains, 700-odd miles and Marseille was dripping in rain when I arrived, too late for most of the restaurants and bars. I was here only for a night’s sleep.

Health & wellbeing, day 2: marseille – arles.

Marseille to Arles is a brisk 30-minute trip

It’s just a half-hour train ride to Arles and, much like Van Gogh back in 1888, I arrived during winter. There’s a mildly dissonant sandy lightness to the landscape, despite the doom-like grey sky. The heavy industry of Marseille recedes and the rail-side vegetation tells of arid summers; firs, bamboo, even a few agaves on the rocky outcrops. The lands fill with fields of olives, vines, pretty farmhouses with elegant heavenwards cypress trees – modern life tacked onto a scene from a Van Gogh painting. I had a window seat for this journey. “Romance” is restored.

Arles and Van Gogh

“Just to let you know there’s only one Van Gogh painting on display in the gallery, but there’s plenty of other contemporary art to see.” the receptionist at Arles’ Fondation Van Gogh explained to me rather sheepishly, as if she’s encountered disappointed visitors one too many times. “Yep, just like the Turner in Margate”, I told her. She chuckled conspiratorially when I explained more. The gallery hosts contemporary exhibitions throughout the year, loosely based around specific themes this often incorporate one or two works by the gallery’s namesake.

These days Arles is more famous for Les Rencontres d’Arles, an annual photography festival. There were remnants of photography displays on colourful walls throughout the old city, silently encouraging me to return in the summer months when the festival is in full swing.

Where I stayed: Hotel Voltaire, Arles

Day 3: Arles – Nîmes – Figueres

Arles is famous for its annual photography festival

It’s a short hop to Nîmes followed by a comfortable TGV train ride to Figueres that glided along the sun-sparkled wetlands and coastal lagoons between Montpellier and Perpignan. I spied flamboyances of flamingoes and alluring long flat cycle paths between waterways. It’s not exactly clear when France becomes Spain but I marvelled at the geography of these natural borderlands and the sugar-dusted Pyrenees in the distance.

Figueres and Dalí

Unlike Van Gogh, Dalí was extremely successful in his own lifetime and returned to his hometown of Figueres in 1960 to work on his lasting legacy: the Theatre Museum. By the time of his death in 1989, the former theatre had been transformed into the surrealist dream and homage to his life and works it is today. I was in awe of his forethought, and it reminded me of the way Tracey Emin is currently transforming the arts landscape back home in Margate (except with much less narcissistic bravado and more pay-it-forward mentoring support for emerging artists).

One of the lower-floor galleries is chock-full of his early career paintings. It covers a spectrum of modern movements: from the cubism of Picasso to the impressionistic Seurat. Except they’re all painted by Dalí himself and they’re leaps away from the lobster telephone and melting clocks that spring to mind at the mention of his name.

Where I stayed: Hostal La Barretina, Figueres

Day 4: Figueres – Barcelona – Madrid – Málaga

Those passing through Figueres can find a wonderful testament to Dali’s unique art in the city’s Theatre Museum

I didn’t have time to discover if there’s more to Figueres than Dalí as I was back on the high-speed and very comfy trains across the plains of Spain.

Málaga and Picasso

Picasso was born in Málaga and lived only the first 10 years of his life here. There are a handful of Picasso experiences on offer and I opted for the Museo Picasso. Thankfully, his extremely prolific output means there are plenty of artworks to see here in an in-depth overview of his career, era by era. I was particularly taken with the little ceramic owls he made towards the end of his life.

Of course, the gallery display neatly sidesteps any of the grislier truths about some of Picasso’s, predilections, liaisons and family dramas. But that’s where filling up the iPad with documentary downloads kept me on-topic during those oh-so-very long train journeys and provided great counterpoint to the celebratory tone of the exhibitions.

Where I stayed: easyHotel

Day 5: Málaga – Tarifa

Malaga’s Picasso museum houses plenty of their hometown hero’s revolutionary artwork

Although that was it for my forays into art, I was surprised an artist movement hasn’t yet established itself in Tarifa; wandering along the causeway between the calm Mediterranean Sea and the wilder Atlantic Ocean, I was awed by the beguiling painterly light that no camera sensor will adequately capture. It’s not just the light making this moment feel spine-tingling special: from here I could see Morocco. I could see it during most of the bus journey from Málaga, too. It’s only 20 miles across the ocean and I was surprised to learn that’s six miles less than the distance between Dover and Calais. There are plans for a tunnel here to connect Spain and Morocco in 2030.

Where I stayed: Vagamundos

Day 6: Tarifa – Tangier

Tarifa, and the last European leg of our writer’s journey

Despite being the shortest leg of the trip (just over an hour by boat across the Strait of Gibraltar), psychologically, it’s the biggest – I was leaving Europe for Africa . With the gentle rock of the boat, it finally felt like the slow, contemplative travel I’d been seeking. Despite the squally rain, the calm blue waters seemed liminal and otherworldly, not just the meeting of land and sea, but like an inter-space between two worlds.

Passport control was on the boat which meant that, once docked in the port of Tangier, I calmly sashayed off, greeted by the call to prayer and unusual birdsong in a calm reverie so different to the airport scrum of plane travel.

The tension of the previous days’ rapid travel evaporated and I whiled away some hours nibbling pastries in the Parisian-style tea houses and seafood dinner at an unassuming hole-in-the-wall restaurant Saveur de Poisson.

Where I stayed: El Muniria

Day 7: Tangier – Marrakech

A view over the rooftops in the Morrocan city of Tangier

The sky turned from the electric blue of dawn to a yellow-peachy early morning blend, as I walked among the tall white-washed buildings to the ultra-modern Tangier station.

The high-speed route from here to Casablanca goes through woodlands and fertile fields of mixed crops. I changed trains for a slightly less plush one and the eucalypts outside were replaced with palm trees, the crops by parched, denuded earth with goats snuffling and power lines on matchsticks criss-cross the barren landscape.

Gradually the pink bindings of Marrakech’s urban sprawl overtook the land and I knew my journey was nearly done. A smile of elation grew across my face as we slowly pulled into Marrakech railway station and my epic journey came to an end. Seven days across France, Spain and Morocco – from Margate to Marrakech – without getting on a plane or in a car.

The Koutoubia mosque towers over a square in Marrakech, the final destination

How I did it

I used Interrail Planner to establish available routes. Although I initially considered a bespoke journey with concierge back-up via Byway or buying separate tickets for each leg from the individual rail operators, it was the seven-day Interrail pass that proved to be the most cost-effective, flexible and user-friendly with the ticket and add-on supplements all based in an app on my phone.

I used the Booking.com app to book accommodation while en route which, in December, was easy to find in suitable locations between the station and galleries.

The total cost of the trip was £991.02, which breaks down to £466.14 on transport, £315.74 on accommodation, £175.49 on food (including coffee and snacks) and £33.56 on art gallery admissions.

Egypt vs Morocco: where to next?

A traveller and an Intrepid guide standing in front of the Pyramids of Egypt

We get it, this is a tough one…

Ever wanted to step into a living open-air museum? Or maybe you’re drawn to a sensory wonderland of spices, souks and sunshine. Luckily for you, there are two places in this great wide world of ours where you can experience both. Well, there’s probably more, but for the sake of a simpler blog, we’ll cover just two: Egypt and Morocco .

So, how do you choose between the Giza pyramids and the Marrakesh Medina? Or the Valley of the Kings and the Blue City of Chefchaouen? Ultimately, it comes down to what activities and sights you’re keen to see and what tasty foods you want to fill up on in between jaunts.

Before you throw a dart at a map on the wall, let’s take a closer look at these ancient treasure troves and help you get on your way (no darts needed).

Our Egypt and Morocco tours

morocco trip adventure

There are only several places on earth that have such a widely known history as Egypt. As such, you’ve probably known about Egypt since you first saw a picture of the pyramids in school. Ancient Egypt was one of the world’s most powerful civilisations and lasted for approximately 3000 years. It was so significant that the Pyramid of Giza is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world that is still standing today. However, this era is only one part of its lengthy history.

While it’s hard for any place to match up to the might of Ancient Egypt, Morocco definitely gives it a fair go. Currently an Islamic Monarchy belonging to the ‘Alawi dynasty, Morocco has previously been subject to migration from the Phoenicians of the Mediterranean, an invasion from the Ancient Romans, the Arab conquest and the French Colonial Rule, among others.

It’s also been the ancestral home of the Amazighs (Berbers), a pre-Arab indigenous ethnic group who’ve been residents of North Africa since around 3000 BCE. With all this history, it now stands as a country of multicultural architecture, food and religion. You’re likely to see an intricate patchwork of human history wherever you go.

Both Egypt and Morocco are predominantly Islamic countries and as such, many people practise daily prayers, celebrate Ramadan and uphold traditional values. As with most Muslim countries, the majority of locals don’t consume alcohol and many will take Fridays off for worship. If you’re planning to visit during a ceremonial time, such as Ramadan, be aware that there’ll be reduced business hours and limited services.

Outside of the religious culture of the region, there’s a general sense of warmth and hospitality in both countries. Sharing and inviting guests in for drinks, namely tea, is an integral part of everyday life, especially in Morocco. Meals are usually served in a communal way which is a perfect encapsulation of the generosity and welcoming nature of Moroccans.

morocco trip adventure

Similarly, in Egypt, while they’re no strangers to travellers, you’ll find that many locals are very grateful to those who visit. Egyptians are known to be very proud of their culture and enjoy sharing it with others. When walking through markets, people will typically be warm and inviting, asking you if you need help or simply welcoming you to their country.

Cultural considerations

It’s worth mentioning that because of the Islamic prevalence in both countries, people act and dress discreetly in public. This means there’s no public affection between couples and people dress conservatively, wearing loose clothing that covers the shoulders, knees and chest specifically. In more rural areas, covering the arms and legs is also common for locals and travellers.

Please note that both Egypt and Morocco are not safe destinations for LGBTQIA+ travellers, especially those who are open about their sexuality and gender identity. In Morocco, homosexuality is illegal and punishable by prison time. In Egypt, although it is not officially outlawed, LGBTQIA+-identifying individuals have been prosecuted with other charges. Because of the danger, it is strongly advised that travellers use discretion while in these countries.

Morocco isn’t the desert landscape most people might think it is. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea and the Sahara Desert , you’ll find beaches, desert sand dunes, lush green valleys and even snowy mountain peaks.

But yes, the desert landscape you’re likely picturing for Egypt is correct. If not for the Nile River providing a water source across the country, the entire landscape would be just an arid desert. Aside from sandy dunes, the south of Egypt is home to mountains while the north has fertile valleys that sit aside the Mediterranean Sea. And although it’s a lesser-known side of the country, Egypt is also home to stunning beaches that attract surfers, divers, windsurfers and even dolphins.

Journey through the heart of Morocco

morocco trip adventure

Moroccan cuisine has been influenced by many cultures, ranging from French and Andalusian Spain to Arabia. Morocco is famous for slow-cooked stews called tajines alongside its national dish couscous (traditionally eaten on Fridays), hummus and “Berber whiskey” (mint tea). The taste of Moroccan cuisine is well summarised by their most popular spices which are ginger, turmeric, black pepper and cumin.

Get a taste of Morocco on a Real Food Adventure

Egyptian cuisine, on the other hand, favours breads, falafels and salads with popular flavours being saffron, dill, coriander, bay leaves and cumin spices. Notable dishes include hamam mahshi (roasted and stuffed pigeon), koshery/koshari (rice, pasta and beans mixture) and ful medames (slow-cooked fava beans).

morocco trip adventure

As both nations are predominantly Muslim, there isn’t a huge amount of alcohol consumed or available. Instead, there’s a thriving tea culture that’s so well-loved that it’s both countries’ national drink! Morocco’s signature drink is mint tea while Egyptians enjoy hibiscus tea (karkade). Fresh and tasty fruit juices are also found everywhere, perfect for a refreshing sugar hit. Egyptians enjoy sugarcane juice, known as asab, while freshly squeezed orange juice is a favourite for Moroccans. Coffee is also popular, with regional favourites including the nous nous drink in Morocco (half milk, half espresso) and kanaka-brewed coffee in Egypt that is served ‘mazbuuta (just the right amount of sugar) and sometimes combined with spices like cardamon.

morocco trip adventure

Just warning you, it’ll be hot in Egypt. Being a desert country, Egypt gets very little rain and a whole lot of sun – so those temps can soar. It’s wetter along the northern coast, specifically the city of Alexandria where it can get over 200mm of rain each year, but mostly in the winter months (November to April). Aside from the mountains on the Sinai Peninsula, it’s hot with not much of a breeze most of the year, except for the yearly wind known as ‘khamsin’. This hot wind usually affects North Africa causing sandstorms and disruption around March to May.

The Egyptian summer months begin in May and last until October. The average maximum temperature sits around 30°C, although, in some desert regions, it can hit 50°C. Temperatures vary depending on where you are, however, the further you move into the country from the Mediterranean Coast, the hotter it’ll be. And just like other deserts, it gets very cold at night, sometimes reaching freezing temperatures.

morocco trip adventure

While Morocco is also part desert, the weather is more Mediterranean with cool breezes off both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Morocco also has a mountain range that can have very different weather to the rest of the country. The Rif Mountains in the north experience the most rain and the Atlas Mountains will have snow most of the year.

Coastal weather is largely mild and pleasant. On the Atlantic coast, there can be flooding caused by intense winter rains while the Mediterranean coastline can get sudden temperature rises from desert winds. Marrakesh has a hot summer with an average high of 38°C in July but throughout the rest of the year, temps sit around 13-27°C. Around the rest of the country, Casablanca and Fez don’t get quite as hot in summer with highs of around 27°C in August.

Cruise the Nile in Egypt

morocco trip adventure

It probably goes without saying that the pyramids are the marquee attraction of Egypt. No matter your age, nationality or interests, seeing the might of such famous landmarks for yourself is pretty epic. There’s also another few thousand years of culture to see throughout the country. So, it’s rather easy to fill up a trip itinerary.

If you’re not up for a journey into the heart of the Great Pyramid – don’t worry, not everyone is. An exterior tour of the pyramids and Sphinx is a great alternative. For a glimpse at some of the excavated treasures of ancient Egypt, stop by the Egyptian Museum in Cairo for all things pharaohs, mummies and hieroglyphics.

Around the rest of the country, impressive sights include the Temple of Isis in Aswan, the four statues of Ramses at Abu Simbel , the Valley of the Kings (a great way to see it is via donkey ride) and the intricate Karnak Temple Complex. When you need a break from history, take a felucca (traditional boat) cruise down the Nile, duck into a souk to haggle and shop or stop by one of the many stunning beaches to cool off. You can find some high-quality snorkelling here too.

morocco trip adventure

On the other side of Africa , Morocco draws people from far and wide looking for a glimpse of its one-of-a-kind charms. Well-known spots include the city of Marrakech for its medinas and bustling souqs, the blue city of Chefchaouen (notable of Instagram fame), Casablanca (of Casablanca fame), Tangier and the Islamic and French-inspired capital city, Rabat.

Morocco also boasts beautiful historical locations such as the part-excavated city of Volubilis, Fez’s old city and the sights of Ait Benhaddou, Essaouira and Ouarzazate, among countless others. Natural sights worth viewing include the Todra Gorge (great for rock climbing), the High Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert, best experienced by sunset.

Due to the unbelievable beauty and picture-ready scenery, you’ll probably feel like you’re walking through some of your favourite films while you’re in Morocco. Because as it happens, you are! Some iconic films shot here have included Lawrence of Arabia , Gladiator , The Mummy , Sex and the City 2 and Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much . Hilariously, Casablanca wasn’t actually filmed in Casablanca. But we won’t stop you from having a ‘here’s looking at you kid’ moment anyway.

The verdict

morocco trip adventure

Okay, now that the facts have been laid out, it’s time to get to the bottom of our concern, Morocco or Egypt? Well, since this isn’t the Olympics, we don’t actually have to give out a gold medal. Which is lucky for us because this is tough competition – and it comes down to the basics. Like, do you want to see a history book come to life or would you prefer to meander through vibrant sets of colour and centuries worth of creativity and culture? We guess it’s going to be a heads-or-tails kinda situation.

So, even though we can’t provide you with a detailed scoreboard, I hope at least you’ve been able to narrow down the decision. If that’s not the case, we might’ve just made it even harder to pick! Oh, well. How about both?

Going it alone: 10 of the best trips for solo travel

O nce the preserve of singletons and gap-year students, solo travel has recently taken on a shiny new look. Rather than a function of necessity or compromise, holidaying alone has become the ultimate indulgence in 2024: a rare chance in this ultra-demanding world to put one’s own needs and priorities first.

"Travelling solo is a liberating experience. It offers the chance to do what and go where you want, on your own terms," says Jonathan Frankham of World Nomads . "It also makes you more likely to branch out, forge deeper connections with others and discover more about yourself."

In short, people are now travelling solo not because they have to – but because they want to. Emboldened with a ‘now or never’ attitude post-pandemic and more confident than ever about spending time in solitude, travellers are busy booking their dream trips, regardless of life stage or relationship status. Many tour operators have noticed the trend: Scott Dunn reported a 30 per cent increase in solo bookings in 2023, while Black Tomato saw them almost double. In response to demand, many operators have launched solo travel collections or solo-specific departure dates, while others are waiving pricey single supplements.

The range of solo travel experiences on offer has broadened, too. You can tick off bucket list trips like hiking the Camino de Santiago or cruising to Antarctica that loved ones in your life might be reluctant to commit to – but also book self-care wellness breaks or enriching learning holidays. Some trips, such as those from Discover the World , let you dial up or down the amount of time you spend in a group environment, so you get both alone time and the reassuring safely blanket that comes with being around others.

A reassuring safe space can be especially appealing to solo female travellers , of which there are now more than ever. According to Student Universe 84 per cent of polled Gen Z women are interested in solo travel, while Craft Travel reports a 350 per cent increase in women-based adventure travel compared to last year. Founder of the latter, Julia Carter, says: "Women who we would have more often seen putting off ‘adventurous’ destinations until they had a partner or their partner’s schedule allowed are no longer holding back."

There will be a female expedition leader at the helm when you journey on special ‘polar rovers’ to see the snow-white giants in the Churchill wilds, and you’ll have the chance to meet local indigenous women and hear about their lives on the arctic tundra too.
