Medium level

Entrenamiento para triatlón en Lanzarote | ACTraining | Tours MTB en Lanzarote

Our Road Bike Volcanoes Tour, which includes transfer service from Puerto del Carmen, starts in the Village of Uga. A ride flanked by the incredible landscapes of La Geria, known by its singular and unique vineyards. Crossing then through Tinguaton, you would be able to appreciate the volcanoes of Volcán El Cuervo and Montaña Colorada heading for the village of Mancha Blanca to take then back by the Timanfaya National Park road, featured by the stunning lunar landscapes of Lanzarote. We’ll get to Yaiza and then turn on the right and after a ride surrounded by lava fields result of the magma ejected by Timanfaya eruptions, we reach El Golfo, a lovely charming fishing town to follow the road track though Los Hervideros and Las Salinas de Janubio, saline where even nowadays is being traditionally extracted sea salt. We will then cross though Yaiza again and end our tour at our starting point, Uga.

Papagayo Tour

Mountain bike

Easy/Medium level

Entrenamiento para triathlon en Lanzarote | ACTraining | Tours MTB en Lanzarote

This is one MTB tour in Lanzarote. Our Papagayo Tour begins at Marina Rubicon in Playa Blanca Marina. Facing north direction, we left Playa Blanca biking the coastline though a beautiful seafront promenade to get into the Ajaches Natural Park. Eventually then we move away from the coast to gain a little height inside the park to bike along its cliffs ́ soft track trails, up and down, and although the trail gains here a little more elevation, the beautiful ocean views invite us to pedal a few kms more. Our return point is located about 10 km from the tour starting point to where we will bike along the seafront, pedalling above the cliffs to see several beautiful small bays and crystal clear water beaches that invite us a dip. Overcoming the beaches we come back to Playa Blanca, but already following along the promenade with an easy ride, we can reach the lighthouse “Pechiquera” from where we can have great views to the islands of Lobos and Fuerteventura. We then retrace the promenade to end our tour at the Harbour Marina Rubicon

E-bike MTB Tour

Electric Mountain bike

Medium bike

Entrenamiento para triatlón en Lanzarote | ACTraining | Tours MTB en Lanzarote

Fantastic views throughout the tour! Very funny! Recommended for all levels. Starting from Puerto Calero, we take an Off-Road track to Playa Quemada,a fishing village with black sand beaches, and then we leave the coast ride about three kms on an steady slope road. We turn back to off-road track at the top to go surrounding the small town of UGA and we take a path that will takes us to the very Timanfaya National Park. Heading to Yaiza, to get then the road that ends in the small seaside village El Golfo, we can visit the Green Lake known as Charco de los Clicos on the shore of the ocean. After this, the route continues through the Hervideros and the Salinas de Janubio, passing through Yaiza and UGA again to bike Off-Road to our final point in Puerto Calero.

Pocillos Tour

Medium Level

Entrenamiento para triatlón en Lanzarote | ACTraining | Tours MTB en Lanzarote

This is other MTB tour in Lanzarote. It is a moderate level tour, that combines Puerto del Carmen, beautiful ocean views, wide slopes and hilarious trails!! The Tour starting point is Playa Los Pocillos, in Puerto del Carmen. We make our way riding thought Playa Grande, passing by Playa Chica, and the very Harbour of Puerto del Carmen. We get then Off-Road, and pedalling up and down, along the ocean waters on our left we left Residencial Puerto Calero behind to get back off road reaching the end of the seafront part of the tour in the fishing town Playa Quemada. After an approximate 4kms ride of steady slope by road with an off-road connection at top and breath-taking views of Los Ajaches Natural Park, we head to the small town of Uga, next to Timanfaya National Park. At this point we return to Puerto del Carmen, undoing the same road for a while, and then passing thought farmlands always with wonderful Ocean views we will get to Puerto del Carmen ́s Harbour , The end point of this tour that you would like to repeat for sure.

Seafront Tour

You choose the bike

Entrenamiento para triatlón en Lanzarote | ACTraining | Tours MTB en Lanzarote

Easy-going Seafront Tour that can be started from Costa Teguise to Puerto del Carmen, or vice versa! This tour goes exclusively by bike lanes, no cars! We start from the beautiful town of Costa Teguise, pedalling from the starting point of Playa Los Charcos to move forward to Playa Las Cucharas, Playa del Jablillo, Playa Bastian and Playa del Ancla. We’ll pass by the fishing town of Las Caletas, heading for city town Arrecife, thought the Port , Los Marmoles. We leave behind Arrecife and the city beach of El Reducto to get to the beaches of the Concha and El Cable. Then we will ride along a seafront promenade bordered by the long never-ending beaches of Playa Honda, Matagorda and the great beach of Los Pocillos. Here, at the tourist and bustling town of Puerto del Carmen, our Tour reaches its first half, where we will have a break for refreshment to return to Costa Teguise.

East Coast Tour

Entrenamiento para triatlón en Lanzarote | ACTraining | Tours MTB en Lanzarote

Our East Coast of The Island Tour stars from Playa Los Charcos, in Costa Teguise, going to Los Ancones with a strong but very short slope that helps us warming up our musculature. We continue our ride by kind of technical tracks to access gradually to loose stone areas. We can observe then migratory birds feeding, as this abrupt geography serves them as camouflage areas. With the ocean on our right, we will find out that this side of the coast of the island is really wild; Here the sea strikes with great force and is quite impressive when there’s is groundswell: Giant waves crashing against walls of lava. We reached then the seaside town Los Cocoteros, passing by its beautiful natural swimming-pool and heading north to naturist seaside town El Charco del Palo, which offers us postcard views. A km far on our left, we find the village of Mala and a large area of sand and dunes that are really beautiful. The sand area become then a vast lava field, wild and impressive. We arrive then to fishing town of Arrieta and start going uphill Tabayesco to start our returning way a km later passing through the highest area of town Guatiza, and start to go down to Costa Teguise flanked by two great volcanoes at just 5km from the end of our great Mountain Bike Tour.

Famara Queen Tour

Entrenamiento para triatlón en Lanzarote | ACTraining | Tours MTB en Lanzarote

Our last MTB tour in Lanzarote. At Famara, at the Atlantic Ocean shore and with impressive views to Famara Cliff, is the starting point of this exciting Tour for our senses. This tour goes totally off-road heading south by trails and tracks, easy-going ups and downs, and always enjoying breath-taking views to the sea. We have the option to bike to the highest part of a volcano, and from there we can gaze at Soo desert land, farmlands, neighbour small towns in its typical white houses , and the blue ocean. In a short descent we will continue our route: the only noise you’ll hear is that of your bike. Peace and quiet everywhere. In Caleta de Caballo the land formation changes and become more pebbled and rocky. The road takes us to the Club La Santa, we will surround the town and go down the old Salinas. Going through the village of La Santa, we keep the seaside on our right, going up and down until we reach an impressive volcano, brightened up by its black colour and the intense reddish colour. This is the point of return; The next 5 km are the same way, but in Caleta de Caballo we do not stray from the seafront track. A wide and entertaining path of compacted sand that contrasts with the blue of the ocean. We spot Famara in the distance, our arrival point and end of our Famara Queen Tour!

Land of the Volcanoes. Enjoy a ride through some of the most dramatic landscapes to be found in Europe.

mtb tour lanzarote

Enjoy a bicycle ride through some of the most dramatic landscapes to be found in Europe.

This is a unique bike trip through some of the most dramatic landscapes to be found in Europe. These islands are of volcanic origin. Lanzarote suffered a series of eruptions in the 18th century and as a result has some fascinating landscapes with volcanoes and lava flows everywhere. The architectural works of Cesar Manrique form a valuable complement to the volcanic environment and are a must. The benign climate, neither hot in summer nor cold in winter, means that cycling is possible all year round.

  • The spectacular vulcanic landscapes
  • Timanfaya National Park
  • The impressive Monte Corona
  • The picturesque village of Haria with its uncountable palm trees
  • The wine-producing area of La Geria
  • El Golfo: the seaside volcanic crater
  • Excellent seafood

Day 1: Costa Teguise Accommodation: Barcelo Teguise beach

Today we arrive in Lanzarote. We taxi from Arrecife Airport to the hotel – 14 km. The rest of the day is free to enjoy the beach resort of Costa Teguise.

Day 2: Costa Teguise / Haria Route: 34, 45, 52 km Accommodation: Barcelo Teguise beach or Villa Lola y Juan

2 options today according to hotel availability:

Option 1: Transfer to Haria and ride back to Costa Teguise – Accommodation: Barcelo Teguise beach

Option 2: Ride from Costa Teguise to Haria – Accommodation: Villa Lola y Juan

En route we have the opportunity to visit Manrique’s famous works such as El Jardin de Cactus, Los Jameos del Agua, El Mirador del Rio which form an integral part of the volcanic landscape. We also have the opportunity to visit the volcanic cave of La Cueva de los Verdes. We take in fishing villages without losing sight of the impressive Monte Corona. Finally we arrive in the picturesque village of Haria surrounded by its uncountable palm trees.

Day 3: San Bartolome Route: 29 or 43 km Accommodation: Hotel Finca La Florida

From Haria, we take the road down towards Teguise, the one-time capital of the island. Our route gives us spectacular views down over the coast. Teguise itself is a delightful small town with typical architecture and many pleasant bars for refreshment. From here we continue towards San Bartolome and the fascingating wine-producing area of La Geria to our country hotel where we spend the next two nights.

Day 4: San Bartolome Route: 50 km Accommodation: Hotel Finca La Florida

Today is a free day spent in our rural hotel. We can choose to relax, or enjoy a round ride, or even both. Our round ride takes us towards the beautiful beach of Famara with the spectacular backdrop of volcanic cliffs. After following the coast, we head across extensive lava fields and a lunar landscape back to San Bartolome. 50 km circuit, but shorter route to Fundacion Cesar Manrique or Teguise available.

Day 5: Costa Blanca Route: 47 or 58 km Accommodation: Hotel H10 Timanfaya Palace

From San Bartolome we head towards the island’s main attraction, the Parque Nacional de Timanfaya. This is where Lanzarote’s volcanic nature is at its most spectacular. The eruptions of 1730 – 1736 buried around a quarter of the whole island, including several villages, and gave rise to the impressive lava and volcano landscape that we see today. From here we head down to the south of the island, stopping en route to visit the seaside volcanic crater of El Golfo before we finally reach the seaside village of Playa Blanca.

Day 6: Costa Blanca Route: El Golfo 36 km – Fuerteventura circuit 70 km Accommodation: Hotel H10 Timanfaya Palace

Playa Blanca sits at the very south of the island and looks across to Fuerteventura. Today we can take a boat across to Corralejo and enjoy a visit or a ride on another island. Alternatively, we can enjoy a day in Playa Blanca and take the opportunity to visit the nearby coves and beaches of Papagayo, the best on the island and unspoilt by tourism. Another option is to visit El Golfo for a seafood lunch by the beach.

Day 7: Arrecife Route: 47 km Accommodation: Gran Hotel Arrecife

From Playa Blanca, we head across the dramatic hills of Femes before heading to the wine country of La Geria. Here, the unusual vineyard cultivation techniques have given rise to a fascinating landscape not to be seen anywhere else in the world, and producing some fine wines. We then descend to the coast and follow a nice promenade from Puerto del Carmen to Arrecife.

Day 8: Departure

A short taxi ride to the airport – 4 km – brings you back to your flight home.

Cycling Lanzarote: your ultimate guide

Lanzarote is a well-known cycling destination, famous for its rugged, dramatic landscapes. It’s an island of volcanic peaks interspersed with crisp, white towns, surrounded by striking blue sea, sandy beaches and palm trees.

As one of the Spanish Canary Islands, the climate is warm throughout the year, and it’s a haven for northern hemisphere cyclists that want to keep training through winter. There are various cycling routes in Lanzarote for all levels too.

Lanzarote is a particularly popular base for triathletes, due to Ironman Lanzarote. Local businesses have responded to the influx of cyclists: bike rental in Lanzarote is easy to source, and there is plenty of bike-friendly accommodation too. It’s also the perfect place to combine a family holiday and bike training.

Planning some cycling in Lanzarote?

You’re in the right place.

In this guide, you’ll find lots of information to help you plan an unforgettable Lanzarote cycling holiday: detailed information on the best Lanzarote cycle routes plus where to stay, when to visit and what you need to know about bike hire in Lanzarote.

Read on and plan your next cycling adventure.

Lanzarote cycling routes

Let’s cut to the chase. If you’re planning to cycle Lanzarote, you need to be aware of the ever-present wind and also that a few of the roads are in less than perfect condition. So not all cycle routes in Lanzarote are perfect.

But you may be willing to overlook these things in favour the warm temperatures and stunning scenery.  Plus training in a headwind should make you as strong as an ox, right?!

The good news is that cycling in Lanzarote also benefits from quiet roads, courteous drivers and hilly terrain. It’s not mountainous (the highest peak is Peñas del Chache which is a mere 670m above sea level), but don’t expect Lanzarote bike routes to be flat either. In fact we found it deceptively hilly – especially if you stay near the coast since then you’ll probably be heading inland almost straight away.

Here are two Lanzarote cycle routes that give a good flavour of what road cycling in Lanzarote is all about. They both take in chunks of the Ironman Lanzarote bike course, which is a good route to follow if you decide you want to ride the whole island. As you’ll see from the maps, Lanzarote is a relatively small island, so you might struggle finding different cycling routes on Lanzarote each day.

All metrics in this article are approximate.

Tour of Timanfaya and the volcanoes

117km, 1,328m elevation gain

This is among the most stunning bike routes in Lanzarote, starting in Playa Blanca. It takes you through some of Lanzarote’s most dramatic scenery. At 114 km with 1,400 m of climbing (and undoubtedly some wind along the way), it’s a pretty tough workout. We’ve also detailed some good shortcuts below!

GPX Download Terms of use reminder

  • Riding through the lava fields of the Parque Nacional de Timanfaya between Mancha Blanca and Yaiza.
  • The red, grey and black patchwork quilt of salt pans at Salinas de Janubio.
  • Yaiza, one of Lanzarote’s most beautiful villages, with its gleaming white houses, bright green window shutters and flowering geraniums. When cycling in Lanzarote, routes don’t come much prettier than this.
  • The wild north coast around famous Club La Santa. The wind can be ferocious, but the rugged scenery and pretty fishing villages are memorable.
  • The wine-making region of La Geria. Between Mozaga and Uga, you’ll see the unusual sight of bright green vines, surrounded by black volcanic ash, sheltering behind low, semi-circular stone walls. It seems hard to believe that anything could grow in such an environment, but this area produces most of Lanzarote’s wine.

Road going through Timanfaya National Park

  • If you’re seeking challenging Lanzarote road cycling, this ride includes a few decent climbs. For example, the climb from Yaiza up to the Timanfaya National Park.
  • Expect strong winds along the coast getting out to Caleta de Famara. There’s a reason wind and kitesurfing are big business here.
  • If you’ve got the time and inclination, it’s a short 0.5km-ish diversion to the unusual sight of El Golfo. It’s a green lagoon that sits in a sunken volcanic crater surrounded by tar-black lava sands. You’ll need to lock your bike up in the car park as you have to walk down a lava sand path to view El Golfo.
  • If you want to see the Parque Nacional de Timanfaya without traffic, get to the road between Yaiza and the National Park before 9 am.

Village of Yaiza

  • One of the toughest sections of the ride is between Mancha Blanca and Caleta de Famara, due to the wind and some hills. If you decide you want to bypass it, there is a convenient shortcut you can take. In Mancha Blanca take the LZ-46 to La Vegueta. In Tiagua take the LZ-20 south to Mozaga. You can then pick up the route home on the LZ-30.
  • Where the LZ-402 meets the LZ-30, you could turn right instead of left and ride the LZ-30 to Masdache rather than diverting south through the agricultural centre of San Bartolomé.

Mirador del Rio and Northern Lanzarote loop

  • 116.3km, 1,750m elevation gain
  • Magnificent views of the whole island from the Mirador del Rio.
  • Untouched coastal riding between Órzola and Arrieta. Órzola is a good place for a stop and to watch ferocious surf crashing against the rocks. Seeing the coastline of Lanzarote by bike is an incredible experience.
  • The LZ-10 is a lot of fun, particularly the descent the other side down towards Teguise is also fun. We found the surface excellent and not too ‘technical’ with only a couple of hairpins to look out for.
  • There are two great potential coffee stops on this ride – one is Jonnie Bakes in Teguise, whose cakes live up to their reputation! The other is ‘Der’ in Puerto del Carmen – a great choice for an end of ride flat white (yes, they’re actually served here!). The food in Der is also excellent, with a good range for veggies, gluten free etc. It’s more expensive than most places one could stop at in Lanzarote, but the quality is well worth it.

Cyclis on LZ-1 Lanzarote

  • The cycle paths in Lanzarote make for a nice, flat start to the ride, but you’ll want to head out early to avoid getting stuck behind slow moving groups. If you’d prefer to avoid the bike path, take the LZ-505 to Tias and then the LZ-35 and LZ-34 to meet up with the route going north on the LZ-1.
  • Make sure you take the little “cyclists’ road” which runs parallel to the LZ-1 (see photo above). Cycling on the LZ-1 itself is not much fun, as it’s the main road for the island. You access it by going under the bridge at the roundabout and then exiting from the second roundabout (this is on our GPX route).
  • If you alter this route when cycling around Lanzarote and decide to include the LZ-207, be aware that before the road reaches the junction with the LZ-10; there are a few big concrete barriers. We had to dismount and lug our bikes over those. Extreme caution is needed here – after scooting round the side of one barrier, we noticed there was some stone on the road and a reasonably sheer drop off at the side. Take care.
  • Extension: if you want to make a really big day of it, you could add in the west coast. After Teguise, take the LZ-402 to Caleta de Famara, La Santa, Mancha Blanca, La Vegueta and Mozaga before you meet up again with this route on the LZ-30. Take a look at the  Tour of Timanfaya and the volcanoes loop for more information.
  • Spot the fields of cacti as far as the eye can see around Guatiza. This is among the best cycling routes in Lanzarote for desert-like landscapes.
  • If you have time, the Cuevos de los Verdes, just north of Arrieta, is worth a stop. They’re part of a 4.5-mile lava tunnel formed when Monte Corona erupted 5,000 years ago. The guided tour takes you through about a mile of tunnel, galleries and caverns and lasts about 45 minutes.

View from Mirador del Rio

Easy cycling on Lanzarote

It’s worth knowing that there are some easy cycling routes in Lanzarote. For Lanzarote cycling routes in the Puerto del Carmen area, a good starting point is the seafront promenade between Puerto del Carmen, Arrecife and Costa Teguise. This is suitable for gentle rides with kids, away from any traffic (see the first 20km of the Mirador del Rio and Northern Lanzarote loop ride).

If you’re seeking cycling routes on Lanzarote in Playa Blanca, there is a promenade here too, but there isn’t a bike lane.

If you want something a bit more adventurous, but not an all-day epic, you could cut short either the Tour of Timanfaya or the Mirador del Rio loop above by cutting across to the return leg when you are ready.

Accommodation

Remember to double-check accommodation bike storage arrangements (and any other services you need) before booking as policies often change.

The three major resorts on Lanzarote are Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen in the east, and Playa Blanca in the south. All make a good base for biking in Lanzarote.

Bike hire Lanzarote

Cycle hire in Lanzarote is easy – you can rent road bikes from all of Lanzarote’s main resorts, and there are also companies that will deliver to you.

When we visited Lanzarote, we chose bike hire in Playa Blanca from Roy’s bike shop . The bike was in good condition and collection was hassle-free. Ideal for cycling in the Playa Blanca area.

We’ve listed below all the road bike hire shops we’re aware of in Lanzarote, to try and assist you. As you’ll appreciate, we have only had personal experience of Roy’s bike shop. It’s also worth noting that bike shops on Lanzarote tend to rent a range of bikes, rather than just road bikes only.

Prices, services and bike brands often change. Please let us know if anything is incorrect.

Bike hire shops, Lanzarote

  • Book your bike in advance, particularly in peak season.
  • Remember to bring your pedals, shoes and helmet. This   packing list may help!

Classic view of Lanzarote, down to the sea

Lanzarote is a good bet at any time of year. January and February are the coldest months, and even then 14 degrees is the average low and the average high is 21 degrees.

There’s generally a warm, mild climate throughout the year.

Even in the winter months, rainfall is rare. December, which is generally the wettest month of the year in Lanzarote, experiences an average of only 29mm rainfall over four days.

That said…

  • The weather can still get oppressively hot in summer, with temperatures regularly peaking at over 30 degrees.
  • It is often very windy. Locals suggest winds tend to be particularly strong between January and April.
  • Winter evenings can be surprisingly cool, due to the winds.
  • The Canary Islands are occasionally hit by dust storms, caused by very fine sand blown across from the Sahara. Temperatures tend to rise when these arrive and they aren’t pleasant to ride in: they’re said to be like riding through a hot, dry fog.

We think the best month of the year to visit is probably October. Air and sea temperatures are still high while there are less other visitors than during the summer.

Getting around in Lanzarote

Having a rental car opens options for family, shopping, dining, rest days, a support vehicle, recceing new routes and non-cycling friends/partners.

Use the search box below to search, compare and book the best car rental deal for your trip.

Tips for cycling in Lanzarote

Highway code and travel information.

As ever, it’s a good idea to check current travel information before you book and travel. For UK visitors, the UK government travel information pages for Spain (including Lanzarote) are here . You should also read and follow the local highway code.

Before you go, take a look at our tips for cycling in Tenerife . Many of them apply to Lanzarote too.

While Lanzarote isn’t as mountainous as some of the other Canary Islands, it’s still a volcanic island, and you’re likely to be doing a significant amount of climbing during your stay.  We’d suggest at least a semi-compact 52-36 chainset, and you may prefer a compact 50-34 chainset with an 11-28 (or even 11-32) cassette.

Lanzarote is notoriously windy. Think about whether deep section rims are really a good idea, and watch out for sudden gusts.

Lanzarote locals tend to use Wind Guru for Lanzarote weather forecasts. It gives wind and temperature information in 14 different places across the island and is more detailed than many larger weather channels.

Things to bring

Remember that temperatures will be considerably warmer than what you’re used to if you’re arriving from the UK. Fill those bottles and remember the rehydration tablets!

Bring spare tubes: punctures are not uncommon due partly to the fact some of the volcanic dust/debris sometimes gets blown onto the roads. Take a look at our packing list for the other essentials you need to remember.

We found the price of coffee and cake pretty reasonable. Unless you deliberately go looking for somewhere upmarket, you can get an obscene amount of coffee and sugary treats without breaking the bank. There are also pastelerias where you can get them in lots of the towns, even the smaller ones. That said, don’t expect the coffee to be out of this world – it’s fine, just not third-wave coffee you might expect if your previous cycling holiday was in Girona!

Getting to Lanzarote

Bear in mind that Lanzarote is about a 4.5 hour flight from the UK.

Guidebook for Lanzarote

We used the Marco Polo Lanzarote guidebook for our trip. It’s pocket-sized but contains a decent amount of information on all the places you may want to visit, as well as some good “best of” pages to inspire you and brief sections on things like the history and architecture, food, drink, festivals and things to do with kids.  The section on cycling is very brief though the map at the rear is quite helpful for route planning (but you wouldn’t want to use it as a cycling map in your jersey pocket as it’s not laminated).

Top 20 Bike Rides and Cycling Routes in Lanzarote

Cycling in lanzarote.

With an incredibly dry climate, fantastic sea views and quiet, meandering routes, cycling in Lanzarote is a joyous activity. Undoubtedly one of the best ways to explore this Spanish island, you can opt for flat rides or really earn your ice cream and climb volcanic ridges.

The landscape here, just a stone’s throw from Morocco, is rocky with little vegetation across much of the island. Cycle routes across Lanzarote make you feel as though you’re pedaling across Mars, with low but imposing calderas rising from the dry earth. The island is a perfect size for two-wheeled shenanigans and you can choose strenuous, all-day adventures across huge swathes of area or enjoy shorter rides to charismatic villages.

Wherever you ride in Lanzarote, you can end the day with a dip in the sea, a perfect place to start thinking about the delights of dinner.

Plan. Save. Navigate. Your best adventures await.

Jose Ramon De la Torre

We came to Haria for the weekend to experience the authentic and local atmosphere of the island. We decided to rent electric bikes from We Love Lanzarote to explore Lanzarote in a more detailed way. It's well-known that cars can't go everywhere. It was wonderful, and we highly recommend renting a bike to feel closer to nature. The bikes are new, of excellent quality, and , most importantly, electric. Thanks to that, no hill was challenging for us, even though we are not athletes and not very active. During the bike rental, we received personalized tips and instructions on various routes.
