Touring a Television Station: A Family Trip

Ever wonder what it takes to put on a nightly newscast? Get the answer by taking a tour of a television station. Not only is it fascinating and educational, but it’s FREE! I was a local television news anchor and reporter for 10 years, prior to making the decision to stay home and raise my daughter. During my time working at various stations around the country, I gave many tours, showing children (and parents) what goes on “behind-the-scenes.”

An average studio tour features a number of behind-the-scenes demonstrations. Including learning how images–like weather maps–appear behind meteorologists. Or how anchors and correspondents look like they are standing next to local landmarks when they are actually in the studio.

You will also get the chance to visit the control room: the epicenter of activity during a newscast. This is where you will find the producer and director calling the shots on which anchor you will see, when. This is also where you will often hear producers telling anchors to “wrap” or “stretch” depending on the time remaining in each show. There is a lot of controlled chaos that goes on in this room—something you don’t see on-air.

The studio is where the anchor desk is located and in most stations it is also home to the weather center, where local meteorologists put together weather maps and other timely information that you will see as a part of their weathercasts. You will also get to see the teleprompter, a device mounted to the studio cameras. The screen is in front of the lens of the camera, and the words on the screen are reflected to the eyes of the anchor or reporter using a one-way mirror. It gives the illusion that anchors have memorized what they are saying, when actually they are reading scripts off the teleprompter.

Most tours also include visits to the newsroom, where news directors, producers, assignment managers and reporters are working on the stories you will see in that night’s newscasts. You may even get the chance to look at the photographer’s room, edit bays (where video is edited for air), the make-up room, and the sports center (where sports anchors and reporters work on their stories). There is a lot that goes into getting the news “on-air” and many people who work hard to get it done.

If you would like to take a tour of your local television station, call ahead first. Most groups book well in advance. They consist of everyone from Boy Scout troops to families who home school their children. But, you can also make it a pit stop on your next family vacation. You will have more success getting into smaller market television stations (like Mason City, San Antonio, and Milwaukee) than larger markets (like Los Angeles, Philadelphia, or Chicago). It’s a great experience for the entire family and you will be talking about it long after the trip is over.

Television Station Field Trip

Tours of television (and radio) stations are available by appointment only. Small groups are welcome and the tour usually takes 45 minutes to 1 hour. Call the television station in your area and ask for the promotions manager who will schedule your visit. Public television companies welcome visitors and are designed for public access. All main production areas have windows so that visitors can watch the personnel at work. You will see sets for weekly programs and also a teleprompter. You will also see the control studio where the signal is sent to the transmitter.

Radio stations also offer tours. They have a control studio where on-air personalities work, a newsroom, and a music library. You may be able to put a face to that disc jockey or radio announcer you have been listening to all this time!

NBC TV Studio Tours In New York City

A tour of the new york city nbc studios which includes the snl and late night studios, nbc studio tour.

The NBC Studio Tour is one of the most popular attractions in New York City. The NBC tour takes visitors through the corridors of the famed 30 Rockefeller Center building (even more famous now thanks to Tina Fey’s SNL-inspired sitcom 30 Rock). You will learn all about NBC’s days as a radio network and its transition to television in the NBC History Theatre, while the Sharp HDTV Theater stop offers visitors a glimpse of the future with a spectacular presentation on its high-definition 130-degree screen.

But most people agree that the best part of the NBC Studio Tour is seeing the actual studios where some of NBC’s greatest shows are filmed, including Saturday Night Live, Late Night With Conan O’Brien, NBC Sports, Nightlight News, and Dateline. Because one or more of these shows might actually be filming at the time of your tour, the NBC pages can’t take you to all of these, but usually two or three are available for viewing at any given time. Be sure to keep your eye out for NBC stars and other celebrities who can occasionally be found walking the halls of 30 Rock.

2024 U.S. Open TV schedule, coverage, where to watch online, live stream, channel, golf tee times

How to watch every memorable moment of the 2024 u.s. open on tv or streaming live online.

us-open-pinehurst-golf-ball-tee-g.png

The third major championship of the 2024 golf season has reached the final 18 holes with a pair of Americans having already claimed the first two majors of the year and a third in pole position to claim the next one. The USGA has loaded up its premier event with nearly all the best golfers in the world as 2024 U.S. Open contenders are taking on Pinehurst No. 2 for the first time in a decade, and it all comes to a head Sunday.

Follow the action Sunday with  live U.S. Open leaderboard coverage  right here on CBS Sports, and check out the  updating leaderboard for scores, statistics and more.

It is 2020 national champion Bryson DeChambeau out in front holding a three-shot lead after 54 holes. A second-place finisher at last month's PGA Championship who posted a T6 at the Masters to open the major season, DeChambeau is looking to capitalize on his immense play with the second major trophy of his career.

Closest to DeChambeau on the leaderboard are Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay and Mattieu Pavon, all sitting at 4 under. McIlroy is seeking to end a decade-long major drought, while both Cantlay and Pavon are aiming to break through with their first major championships.

Scottie Scheffler entered as the U.S. Open favorite having already won the Masters and Players Championship this season (and he may well have taken the PGA, too, if not for a series of unfortunate events). Instead of contending at Pinehurst, though, he barely made the cut and began reassessing his game  after 36 holes of the U.S. Open. It was a similar but worse story for Tiger Woods , who lamented missing the cut believing that he played better than his score indicated over the first two days of the tournament.

On the line are not only the U.S. Open Championship Trophy and the third major title of the year but a record  $4.3 million winner's share as part of the U.S. Open's record $21.5 million purse . In other words, all the pressure is on across the final 18 holes.

While attending the U.S. Open can be a ton of fun, simply being able to watch golf on the game's grandest stage is an incredible treat each year. We here at CBS Sports are thrilled to bring you wall-to-wall coverage of the U.S. Open all week long.

Enough talking about it. Here's how you can watch as much U.S. Open as possible on Sunday.

George Strait show in College Station attracts largest ticketed concert attendance in US history

The legendary artist has claimed yet another first.

Nate Kotisso , Digital Journalist

SAN ANTONIO – How ‘bout them new concert records? Boys, ain’t they somethin’?

On top of hit record after hit record, legendary country music artist George Strait can lay claim to another record.

Recommended Videos

Strait’s Saturday night concert at Kyle Field in College Station attracted 110,905 ticket-buying fans. The 110,905 tickets sold are now the most sold for a concert in U.S. history.

Strait is no stranger to performing in front of 100,000 people or more in Texas. During his “The Cowboy Rides Away Tour” in June 2014, Strait took the stage before 104,793 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Saturday’s mark breaks an almost 47-year record previously held by the Grateful Dead, who performed in front of 107,019 at a Sept. 1977 show in New Jersey.

Strait’s concert also achieved an attendance number the Texas A&M football team has never reached. The program’s attendance record at Kyle Field is 110,663 fans, who witnessed a home loss to Ole Miss in Oct. 2014.

Kyle Field, located on the Texas A&M campus, is currently undergoing a trial run as a venue that hosts more than Aggies’ football games.

The stadium hosted a Brazil-Mexico soccer match on June 8 as a part of the Mexico men’s national team tour of the United States. The 85,249 fans in attendance garnered the largest crowd for a Mexico national team match in Texas history.

Strait, 72, has four more tour dates left in 2024: June 29 at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, July 13 at Ford Field in Detroit; July 20 at Solder Field in Chicago and Dec. 7 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Strait will be joined each night by fellow country music artists Chris Stapleton and Little Big Town.
