The perfect wear-everywhere for any occasion belt bag, the Dagne Dover Ace Fanny Pack is the ultimate travel accessory. Made out of thick neoprene material — a signature of Dagne Dover bags — this fanny pack proved to be protective and durable during testing, while still feeling lightweight and comfortable to wear. After we accidentally spilled coffee on the bag and wore it in a surprise rain storm, there wasn’t a drop of water that seeped into the bag, and most of the liquid rolled right off without leaving a trace.

While neoprene material has a somewhat sporty look to it, this bag looks just as stylish as it is functional. We love the just-right size for storing essentials like a phone, passport, wallet, and headphones, but it’s small enough to wear as a crossbody bag comfortably. There are several discrete interior and exterior pockets for organizing and the stap is easy to adjust. And the bag comes in seven color options in neoprene and air mesh material.

We love the puffer material of this bag, but the puffiness does add some extra bulk to the already large bag. It also comes in a whopping 19 color options and makes an excellent gift for travelers.

This belt bag is made with recycled 600D ripstop polyester, which basically means the fabric is reinforced to withstand extreme conditions and prevent a tear from escalating if one does occur. We also love the inclusive size of the strap that can extend to 50 inches long so you can wear the bag across the body or on the waist comfortably, and we found that it doesn’t move around while out and about. Plus, the 2.5-liter capacity is big enough to fit the essentials without feeling cumbersome to carry. One thing to note is that the Jansport website has more color options to choose from compared to other retailers.

Travelers especially can’t get enough of this bag, so we had to get our hands on it, which was no small feat since it’s often sold out due to popularity. Once we tested it out during a hike, multiple walks, and for running errands, we understood the hype around the versatile bag. You can use it for a variety of scenarios, and the combination of the sporty and stylish design means that it can go with any outfit. The 1-liter capacity is too small for bulky items like a larger wallet, but the lightweight fabric and small size renders the bag nearly weightless when we wore it around the waist or across the chest. If you can get your hands on one of these iconic belt bags, it’s worth every penny.

It also features an adjustable strap to fit the bag snug to the waist so it doesn’t jostle around when you’re running. During testing, it never felt heavy for long runs, and we found that it’s most comfortable to wear with the pack resting on the lower back.

The bag can fit all the grab-and-go essentials like diapers, wipes, rash cream, a onesie, and smaller items like sunscreen or hand sanitizer. Traveling parent-approved, this fanny pack proved to be particularly useful for day trips with a baby or toddler during testing, but if you’re planning an overnight trip or a longer day trip, it might not be big enough to accommodate more items like toys or clothing.

Packable bags can sometimes be flimsy, but this one offers just the right amount of structure and flexibility thanks to the soft recycled nylon fabric and padded back panel for support. It can fit everyday essentials like a small wallet, phone, or keys, or travel items like a passport and boarding pass. You can wear the compact pouch as either a waist or a crossbody bag. We thought it was more comfortable to wear across the body, but the versatility in styling the bag is helpful.

It also features multiple pockets to store credit cards, sunglasses, keys, passports, or a small e-reader since the capacity is larger. We tested the cream color and the leather held up perfectly with lots of use on a trip, and there are no signs of scratches or damage, so we’re confident it’s worth the investment for a durable and stylish fanny pack.

Of course, the belt is designed to aid runners in storing belongings on a jog, but the discrete and lightweight design of the bag makes it an excellent accessory for travelers since it can double as a money belt. Our favorite part of the belt is that it doesn’t ride up onto the stomach or fall below the waist while running, and it stays in place without feeling cumbersome to carry around. We were able to fit a phone, lip balm, cash, and keys inside the pouch and it still felt feather-light, and the bottle strap securely fastened water to the pack. The bag is made with water- and sweat-resistant fabric that is very comfortable against the skin, and the adjustable strap provides a custom fit for all types of activities.

Although these fanny packs didn’t make it onto our main list, they still scored well during testing and would make great options for some travelers.

Eddie Bauer Skylar Waist Pack : This fanny pack comes in gorgeous neutral colors and has excellent organizational features. It’s geared toward outdoor enthusiasts, so we think it’s best for hiking or biking.

Athleta All About Belt Bag : A Lululemon dupe, this similar bag has enough room for the essentials, but the wide nylon strap wasn’t as comfortable to wear and didn’t secure the bag to the waist when it was packed full.

Quince All-Day Neoprene Belt Bag : Similar to our overall pick, this neoprene bag is durable and protective, but it’s fairly small and doesn’t offer as good pockets and organizational features.

There are tons of fanny packs on the market, so we thoroughly researched popular and trusted options to try out in day-to-day life. From the constantly sold-out Lululemon belt bag to Dagne Dover’s iconic neoprene bag, we tested 36 fanny packs designed to fit the needs of travelers, parents, outdoor enthusiasts, and more.

For two weeks, T+L editors and other members of our product testing team wore the fanny packs for activities ranging from air travel, jogging, going out to dinner, hiking, shopping, and more scenarios in which a belt bag could be helpful. Look at sizes

The size of a fanny pack can be deceptive, as even smaller ones can offer much more space than what meets the eye. To gauge the size of a belt bag, we recommend looking at the specifications section on the website to find out the dimensions of the bag, length of the strap, and the capacity in liters. Most belt bags are around one to three liters in capacity with 1-liter bags offering enough storage for a phone, small wallet, keys, and other small items. Larger bags with two or three liters of room can fit bigger items like an e-reader, headphones, or a larger wallet.

Over the past 12-18 months I have been sent a lot of bum bags by a number of brands ( I am now a total waister. An unrepentant bum-bagger ).

Some were great and others were bloody dreadful. But out of all the many, many, many fanny packs that we tried, tested, loved, loathed, and lost, these ones listed here are our absolute faves. Check out the best fanny packs for travel.

The Nomatic Navigator Collapsible Sling is a game-changer for anyone who demands both style and functionality from their everyday carry. The Gregory Nano waist pack is a lightweight, durable travel essential for any globe trotter. It’s been an absolute game-changer when it comes to holding all my items in one place and has become my favourite item from Gregory .

The bag has three spacious pockets with easy-access zippers; a large pocket in the middle, a hidden one towards the body – perfect for keeping those important items safe, and a smaller one at the front. It has a sturdy, adjustable buckle which you can opt to wear around the waist or cross-body. One of my favourite features is the padded back, especially on those long travel days this pack is super comfy and hardly feels like you are wearing it.

The only downfall for me is that I am a fairly large human and even for me, this bag is pretty big. Nearly double the size of my previous bumbag; it has a lot of room for items but the size doesn’t go unnoticed. But overall, you know what, I couldn’t be happier with the Gregory Nano Waistpack and have confidence that my items are safe.

In fact, it’s become one of my all-time favourite pieces of travel gear at the moment.

WANDRD Crossbody

The WANDRD Crossbody is a stylish and functional accessory for your daily essentials. This thing has more pockets and compartments than I know what to do with, making it stand out when compared to other cross-body or bum bags (fanny packs to some of you) which can become deep dark black holes of doom and swallow your car keys.

It feels comfortable to wear all day long and has a bunch of cool features such as auto-closing magnetic pockets, a hidden AirTag pocket and water-resistant fabrics which have both saved my butt and protected my belongings from drunk-me a couple of times. 

There is also a lifetime guarantee offered on this product and it comes with a 30-day return policy, which is exactly why I recommend WANDRD brand .

The worst thing about the WANDRD Crossbody is the price tag. At $70 this thing is definitely NOT the cheapest crossbody bag on the market. It also isn’t the greatest option for storing single larger items which could fit into other regular bum bags or similar products. That being said, the pockets are one of the most useful and unique parts of this product.

The Osprey Daylite Waist Pack is a belter for those who want a trusty companion for their day-to-day adventures or a quick jaunt into the wilds. It’s sturdy, no-nonsense, and designed with practicality in mind. The main compartment is just the ticket for your daily bits and bobs, and there are enough extra pockets to keep everything tidy and to hand.

It’s made from high-quality, durable materials and comes with the Osprey promise of quality. Plus, it’s comfy to wear , with a padded back panel and an adjustable strap that lets you find just the right fit.

Well, yes. But, the fact is that whether you’re a globetrotter, a city explorer, a beach lover, or an adventure seeker, the waist pack has a use for you . I won’t lie, for the longest time I was a bit sniffy about wearing one of these but they have been a bit of a life changer.

Fanny packs may have made a comeback! Nowadays it seems like we don’t make it a mile down trail without seeing a few hikers rocking one of these versatile little bags. We have researched and used dozens of different hip packs and covered over 1000 miles over the years using them on day hikes and multi-day outings. In that time, we’ve learned what matters the most. We look at weight, capacity, waterproofness, pocket configurations and more to help you find the absolute best fanny pack for your next adventure.

The CleverHiker team has been checking out the latest and greatest fanny packs available and has continued to test old favorites:

• The Cotopaxi Bataan is still the pack to beat. It’s super spacious, water-resistant, and lightweight.
• We added the  Atom Roo  to our list and with nearly 400 miles of use on it so far it’s safe to say that it’s one of our favorite fanny packs of all time.
• The Osprey Talon (men’s) / Tempest (women’s) also makes the list as an awesome high-capacity option for day hiking and all-around use.

Best Use: All-around, but we really love it for backpacking

The  Cotopaxi Bataan  is a truly unique fanny pack. Each one has a unique colorway designed using off-cuts of scrap fabric to reduce waste – which we can all get behind! While the hodge-podge of bright colors won’t appeal to everyone, we think they’re completely cool and love rocking our one-of-a-kind fanny on trail.

The other major standout of the Bataan is its impressive weight-to-capacity ratio. At 3 liters, this is one of the largest backpacking fanny packs on our list – and it feels even larger than the numbers imply. Its weight is on par with fannies that have about half the capacity, and it’s priced lower than anything comparable.

We love sporting our unique Bataan on the trail, and we’re constantly blown away by how many snacks and small items we’re able to fit in it.

Best ultralight fanny pack for backpacking

Price: $53 / $60 (standard / large)

Capacity: 1.5L or 2.5L

Best Use: Backpacking

• Highly water-resistant
• Very durable for the weight
• Color scheme is left up to chance unless you go with black

Most of the time it’s relatively easy for us to pick out a drawback or two about a piece of gear, but we really struggled to find a flaw with the  Atom Roo . The capacity is just right (we prefer the large size), the materials are high-quality/durable, the pockets are designed to functional perfection, and the Roo is incredibly light for its size.

The Roo is made from off-cuts of VX-21 (210d; more commonly known as X-Pac) used in the construction of Atom’s backpacks. So waste that might’ve ended up in a landfill is instead being used to create this neat little hip pack. VX21 is waterproof and highly tear/abrasion-resistant by nature, but it’s important to keep in mind that the Roo isn’t seam-sealed against downpours.

The only real “drawback” we could think of is that – since the Roo is made from off-cuts of whatever custom backpacks Atom Packs was making that week – you don’t have control over the color. We purchased a custom backpack at the same time we bought our Roo, and to our delight the Roo complimented our backpack beautifully. We reached out to ask if we got lucky or if they often try to match the colors. We were told it’s common – but not guaranteed – to get a Roo in a similar color scheme when you order a custom pack since the same person is likely to be making both pieces.

If you can’t stand to leave it up to chance, you could always go with the  Roo RE  which comes in black. We chose the large size because it’s a lot more space for a negligible amount of weight added and only $5 more. There’s plenty more praise we’d like to give this hip pack, but in the interest of not being too long-winded we’ll say this: we’re convinced this is as close to perfect as a backpacking fanny pack can get.

• Patagonia Black Hole Mini

Best small-capacity fanny pack

Weight: 2.8 oz.

Capacity: 1L

Best Use: All around

• Small capacity

The  Patagonia Black Hole Mini  has been one of our favorite fannies for many years due to its compact size, comfort, and stylish design. This versatile hip pack is streamlined enough for backpacking and good-looking enough for travel and everyday use, so it’s a great choice for those looking for a bag that can do it all. Despite having only one liter of capacity, the Black Hole feels much more spacious and fits all of our small essentials for hiking and day-to-day use. Just keep in mind that the Black Hole isn’t waterproof, so you’ll want to line it with a Ziploc if you’ll be hiking with it in inclement weather. That said, the low weight and practical design of the Black Hole make it an excellent value for those wanting a fanny pack that’s just as useful on trail as it is around town.

• LiteAF Featherweight

Best ultralight pack for backpacking

Price: $45-$55 (depending on fabric)

Measured Weight: 2.4 oz.

Capacity: 1 L

• Slightly less durable than some

The  LiteAF Featherweight is one of the lightest fanny packs on our list, and the compact design keeps essentials close at hand but out of the way. We particularly love the front stretch pouch on this fanny because it’s convenient for quick access to stuff we need often, and tight enough to keep items secure. We typically stash our phone in the front pocket, so we can access it easily when we wanna snap a photo or check our navigation app. The thin material and minimal zipper hardware make this fanny a little less durable than others, but these features are also what make it ridiculously light. If you don’t mind being a bit careful with your gear, the thoughtful design of the Featherweight will add a ton of convenience to your backpacking setup.

• Matador Freerain

Best waterproof fanny pack

Capacity: 2L

Best Use: Backpacking/hiking & watersports

• Fully waterproof
• Lightweight
• Large capacity for the weight
• Thin strap can be uncomfortable with heavier loads

We’ve been using the  Matador Freerain Hip Pack  for a long time now, and it’s proven to be infinitely useful for daily life and all kinds of adventures. This pack is fully waterproof, so you can keep your phone and other essentials safe but convenient. We’ve worn the Freerain Pack for everything from hiking in the rain to creek wading, paddleboarding, floating the river – even swimming! The sleek and sporty style looks great on anyone, and you can wear it two ways – at the waist or cross-body. What we like most about this pack is that it’s so lightweight and minimal that you can barely tell you’re wearing it, yet it can expand to fit a  small water bottle  or a  windbreaker  when you need it to. To top it off, the Freerain is an excellent value for an ultralight, waterproof fanny pack.

Osprey Talon / Tempest

Best fanny pack for day hiking

Best Use: Hiking

• Comfortable
• Not as versatile as some

Tired of having to take off your backpack and dig around every time you need a small item on day hikes? Ditch the daypack and go with the  Osprey Talon (men’s) / Tempest  (women’s). This large-capacity fanny pack has plenty of space for essentials on fair-weather hikes when you don’t have to worry about packing bulky layers. There are two water bottle sleeves, a large main compartment, hip pockets, and a front pocket that will keep your items well organized and easily accessible. If you’re familiar with Osprey’s backpacks, then you’ll already know how comfortable and breathable they are. The Talon and Tempest feature the same padding and breathable back panel, so they’ll stay comfortable during long days on trail.

• Jansport Fifth Avenue

Best budget fanny pack

Price: $30 (different colors/patterns may cost more)

Measured Weight: 4.1 oz.

Capacity: 2.5L

Best Use: Casual/everyday

For casual use, you’d be hard-pressed to find a higher quality fanny pack than the  Jansport Fifth Avenue  at this price point. This bag is built with the same durable materials and built-to-last construction that you remember from your grade school backpack. We love the simple, yet effective pocket design – one large main compartment and a generously sized front zipper compartment keep your items well organized and easy to access. The Fifth Avenue isn’t weather-resistant, so it’s not the best choice for longer hikes or areas with unpredictable weather. But for strolls to the park and everyday use, it’s one of the best and most affordable options available.

Hyperlite Mountain Gear Versa

Best blend of space, low weight & water resistance

Measured Weight: 4.2 oz.

Capacity: 2.25L

• A bit bulky

The  Hyperlite Mountain Gear Versa is a seriously adaptable fanny pack that can be worn in several different ways to suit your needs. We wear it as a crossbody bag around town, attached to our hipbelt or sternum strap for backpacking, and around the waist for travel and day hikes. The Dyneema (DCF) material makes the Versa pretty spendy, but this fabric is waterproof and will keep your important items protected in inclement weather. DCF also has an incredible strength-to-weight ratio, so the Versa is an excellent choice for those wanting a durable fanny pack that keeps weight to a minimum. • KAVU Spectator

Stylish fanny pack for everyday use

Measured Weight: 4.6 oz.

• Streamlined pockets
• Dries slowly

We love the value-priced  KAVU Spectator  for its streamlined design and 90s-esque styling. This small waist pack is made with extra durable 600-denier polyester, so it’s perfect for the demands of everyday use. Because the body fabric isn’t waterproof and doesn’t dry as quickly as others, we don’t recommend the Spectator for any rigorous hiking. But it works well for jaunts on trails in city parks, and then it transitions seamlessly back to town life afterward.

• Thrupack Summit Bum Classic

Comfy & customizable fanny pack

Price: $60-$65 (depending on color)

Measured Weight: 3.7 oz.

Capacity: 2.5 L

• Fully customizable
• Great value
• Good balance of capacity-to-weight
• Excellent organization
• Strap can be a little hard to tighten since it’s not fixed
• Can be a bit frumpy when packed with heavier items

The  Thrupack Summit Bum Classic  has an excellent balance of low weight to storage capacity. The classic version has 2.5L of storage, but you can use the custom  Thrupack builder  to go larger or smaller depending on your needs. There are a ton of colors and patterns to personalize the look of your fanny pack, which is just plain fun. One option we definitely recommend is the  Comfy Strap . The Summit Bum itself is well padded and is already one of the most comfy fannies on our list, but this strap upgrade really ups the ante.

• Hightail Designs The Ultralight

Minimal ultralight fanny pack

Price: $65-$75 (depending on pattern)

Measured Weight: 1.8 oz.

• Lots of color/pattern options
• Zipper corners make it hard to open/close with one hand

The  Hightail Designs Ultralight Fanny Pack is awesomely minimal and delightfully stylish. There’s not much going on with this fanny pack, and we like it that way. Some fannies are chock full of zippered pockets and hidden compartments, making it easy to lose track of small items. The Ultralight has just one large compartment with a small foldover pocket on the inside for isolating items you don’t need during your hike, like a wallet or a house key. We also love that it’s pretty dang waterproof, the thin strap sits comfortably under a backpack, and the capacity is just right for a smartphone, some snacks, and other small necessities.

• TINYAT Travel

Affordable & compact fanny pack

Measured Weight: 3.8 oz.

Capacity: About 1 L

• Useful pockets
• Oblong shape may make it hard to fit larger items

If affordability is your main concern, you won’t find a better deal than the  TINYAT Travel Fanny Pack . This sleek waist pack comes in a huge variety of fun colors and patterns and is best suited to travel and casual use. The oblong shape of the TINYAT makes it comfortable and manageable, but it somewhat limits versatility if you have bulkier items (like a large  power bank ) to tote. That said, we find the pockets of this pack to be very convenient – particularly the zippered back pocket that sits against your body which can be used to conceal sensitive items, like credit cards and a passport during travel.

• Mountainsmith Tour Lumbar

Measured Weight: 1 lb. 9 oz.

Capacity: 9 L

• Comfortable padding
• Might be too large for some to wear comfortably

The  Mountainsmith Tour Lumbar  is a beast of a fanny pack that can haul a ton of stuff. It’s almost as large as some of our favorite  daypacks , so it may be the only bag you need for hitting the trail. It has a ton of organizational pockets, two water bottle holsters, and a heavily padded harness for maximum comfort when carrying heavier loads. That said, this fanny is quite bulky, so folks with a petite build may find it a little too large to carry comfortably. Still, we think the Tour works well for day hikers who prefer to have all of their items accessible at their waist rather than having to take off and rummage through a backpack.

What’s Most Important to You in a Fanny Pack?

There are a ton of basic, affordable fanny packs on the market, but you’ll likely pay a premium price if you want something extra large or waterproof. We have fanny pack recommendations for every budget.

Most fanny packs are small and light by design, but we give extra importance to weight when looking for one for backpacking. The difference may just be a few ounces, but every little bit counts. For day hikes and travel when we don’t want to carry a  daypack , we may opt for a larger, heavier fanny pack.

For short hikes when you don’t need to pack a lot of extra gear, leaving the daypack at home and opting for a fanny pack instead feels really nice. This saves you the hassle of having to take off your backpack every time you need to access your stuff and keeps your back from getting sweaty. When we want to keep things more compact and streamlined for backpacking, we typically go with a smaller fanny pack between 1 and 2.5 liters.

We prefer to have a waterproof fanny pack for backpacking and hiking. Waterproof fabrics are more spendy, but we find the peace of mind they provide is well worth the cost. If you choose to go with a non-waterproof fanny pack, we recommend bringing along a gallon Ziploc or two to protect your electronics and other sensitive items in inclement weather.

Here at WIRED, we love fanny packs (or waist belts, bum bags, whatever you want to call them). Before the resurgence of all things the 1990s, this might have been an unpopular confession. But now, we're just happy to share our affection with a wider audience.

Fanny packs don't make your back sweat or twist your spine. You can carry the weight in your front, swing it around to the back, or sling it over a shoulder. They can go from the hiking trail to the bar without skipping a beat, and they can hold your train ticket and fit into a backpack while traveling. Best of all, they're so much more convenient than trying to fit your enormous phone into a pants pocket. These are our favorites. You're welcome.

Best All-Day Pack

This is my favorite bag to take on an all-day excursion. Why? Pockets, pockets, pockets! The Tour is loaded with stash spaces, and the bag's large size technically makes it a lumbar pack, since it sits on the hips but covers the lower back as well. I can typically fit a change of clothes and a couple of meals in here, all in addition to the gear I'll need for a full day on the trail or on the bike.

The Tour has compression straps on the sides to keep it snug, and the latest model adds a sewn fabric pouch to the bungee cord on the face, making it an even better place to lash a windbreaker. There are two water bottle pockets on the sides, a zip-shut phone pocket on the hip, and a half-dozen pockets in the interior, including a padded tablet sleeve where I keep my Kindle for post-lunch relaxing. When it gets heavy (which believe me, it does), the nice, wide shoulder strap turns it into a sling. There are even backpack-style shoulder straps available for $28 . —Michael Calore

Best for Running

I'm a big fan of minimalist fanny packs. They are a welcome alternative to crossbody bags that tend to swing around and smack me in the face when I tie my shoe. I've written about Patagonia's small travel fanny pack before.

The Black Hole fanny pack now uses 100 percent recycled, ultralight ripstop nylon that's been treated with a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish. It comes in a bunch of delightful retro colorways and fits a phone, wallet, and lip balm. When I cinch it, it stays tight against the small of my back on miles-long runs through the woods, but it easily expands to fit a hat or pair of gloves when I strip them off. It also packs down into a small stash pocket while traveling. —Adrienne So

Best for Bike Commuting

Fellow cyclists, I have to tell you about my favorite bike accessory. Handmade in Los Angeles by Road Runner Bags, the 10-inch-wide, 5-inch-tall, and 2-inch-deep Lil Guy is the perfect size for toting the minimum required gear for an afternoon in the city: Phone, lights, lock, sunglasses, keys, Kind Bar, and a couple of brewskis.

My favorite design detail: The Road Runner kids put a U-lock holster on the side of the bag that faces your body, so that when I slide my lock into the dedicated slot, the lock sits flush against my back and doesn't flop around. If that isn't comfortable for you, there are other places to fasten a lock, like at the hip. The extra strip of webbing across the outside of the Cordura bag is the best place to latch tail lights, an additional lock, and a carabiner filled with keys. —Michael Calore

Best for Concerts

This little Cordura bag from Timbuk2 is shaped to be comfortably worn three ways: around the hips, slung on your back, or across the chest. It stays put in all three modes with help from the padded mesh panel on the back.

The Slacker is one of the smallest bags in this roundup, so just know that it doesn't hold a whole lot. I routinely use mine for my phone, earbuds, sunglasses case, and keys (there's a key clip inside). Anything more than that, and I'd be Tetris -ing stuff in and out through the relatively tight zipper opening. But the small size makes it a great choice for taking to concerts or on short walks. The ability to swing it around to my chest where I can keep an eye on it also affords me added peace of mind at a crowded bar or on public transit. —Michael Calore

Best Mountain Biking Pack

Bontrager’s convenient waist pack is perfect for my after-work mountain-bike putters around the park. Unlike most mountain-biking lumbar packs I’ve tried, it’s not so tall that it swallows my entire (admittedly short) torso. And despite having a padded foam back, it’s soft, not stiff. The pockets are conveniently located on the sides instead of in the middle of your back, so I can reach back and grab things without twisting myself around. The water bottle pocket also fits my tiny 9-ounce S’well when I have, again, forgotten where exactly I stored all the horrible plastic sports water bottles and hydration bladders (or forgotten to clean them). It’s also big enough to fit car keys and a wallet, along with a tool and a tube, and it comes in colors subdued enough that I can take it hiking and dog-walking, as well. —Adrienne So

Best Camera Bag

Moment's fanny sling is a camera bag disguised as a small, minimalist, back-saving fanny pack. It's one of our favorite small bags from our camera bag guide . You can wear it as a sling bag cross-body or as a fanny pack, and it's comfy whichever way you go. It's not huge, though. The 2-liter capacity means this is meant for carrying a slim point-and-shoot, phone, or compact mirrorless camera, not your DSLR. Its main compartment has a thin sleeve to store an item alongside your camera, and over on the front are two pockets for spare batteries or keys. It's made of recycled 500-denier nylon and 210-denier ripstop with YKK zippers. —Julian Chokkattu

If you're traveling, you're probably frequenting places where tourists gather, with hefty bags full of valuables that are targets for pickpockets. Pacsafe's sling pack has many anti-theft features —like pop-able, lockable zippers—that should puzzle any thief trying to surreptitiously open it while standing behind you on a bus. Other security measures include wire-reinforced, slashproof straps and an interior RFID-blocking pocket. It's stylish, made from recycled nylon , and is big enough to fit both a Kindle Paperwhite and an iPad Mini . —Adrienne So

Best Waterproof Pack

North Street Bags makes all of their bike bags by hand in a small shop in Portland, Oregon, and they're designed to endure some of the yuckiest, wettest weather in the country. The Pioneer Hip Pack has a lifetime guarantee. It's made from super tough, waterproof X-Pac fabric, with heavy-duty, waterproof Lenzip zippers to keep your belongings dry in days-long drizzles.

I like the size of the Pioneer 8 better, but if you get the larger Pioneer 9 hip pack, you can customize it by adding interior pockets, a shoulder strap, or a handlebar kit. They also do frequent collaborations with local artists on limited-edition prints. —Adrienne So

Best Diaper Pack

Got diapers? You can still travel light with a fanny pack. Béis’ Diaper Pack is a bit bulky compared to other bum bags, but it fits everything I need for a quick outing without lugging my large, all-day diaper bag around. The front pocket is designed to hold diapers, with a cutout to reach the wipes pocket on the inside, and the large main pocket does the work of holding other stuff. I’ve easily fit a couple diapers, a pack of wipes, a backup outfit, a hat, a snack, and a toy or two into this bag—plus the included changing pad, which sits in its own open external pocket that I sometimes throw my iPhone into in a pinch.

The main compartment also has a couple of credit card pockets and a little hook to attach your keys. Once the (ahem) butt of many jokes, fanny packs—also known as hip packs, sling bags, crossbody bags, or bum bags—have made a major comeback in recent years. They’re now a fully accepted and celebrated wardrobe staple, and with good reason: These compact, hands-free bags are pretty darn useful. Plus, they’re cute.

We researched 47 bags and tested 22, ultimately landing on five favorites that suit a wide variety of tastes and situations.

The research

Dagne Dover Ace Fanny Pack

Roomy and style-forward.

This spacious neoprene pack is a true blend of fashion and function—you can stash plenty of stuff in it (a large wallet, makeup kit, phone) and still have room to spare. But its puffy shape isn’t for everyone.

Buying Options

The Dagne Dover Ace Fanny Pack is just right for people who want an accessory that’s as much a fashion flex as it is a useful carry pack. We were won over by its charming, bulbous style—though it’s not everyone’s taste—and roominess. It’s the priciest fanny pack of any of our picks, but—for less than $100—it’s a decent value, especially compared with the price of traditional handbags.

It’s as stylish as it is practical. “It’s kind of cartoony, in a fun way,” said staff writer Dorie Chevlen of the fanny pack’s distinctive, padded look. The neoprene (think: wetsuit) material helps prevent any water from getting inside and adds to the pack’s snazzy, modern vibe.

It has oversize hardware. The Dagne Dover fanny pack has a chunky, large-tooth zipper that runs across the top. It can be visually jarring at first, but it keeps the bag secure and works without much fuss. The buckle on the Dagne Dover fanny pack is also oversize, which is an odd choice in terms of form and function; it’s distractingly large and a bit clunky to operate, though it does emit a satisfying click when fastened.

It’s spacious. Without looking or feeling overly big or bulky, the Dagne Dover fanny pack has enough storage to carry a big phone, an overstuffed wallet, a travel pack of tissues, and even a spare sippy cup for the little one. (Note: This pack is wider at the top and tapers towards the bottom.) Plus, it has a few extras to help keep your belongings organized: a cardholder-size pocket up front, a slot to hold a pen inside, and a handy little clip for house keys.

It’s comfy to carry. The Dagne Dover fanny pack is sturdy and well constructed; it doesn’t start bulging when it’s stuffed full, and it keeps its contents nicely cushioned and protected. The strap is unusually thick for a fanny pack, which our panel of testers liked—they said it felt more pleasant and secure. The bag rests comfortably on your waist when you’re standing and moves a little higher when you sit, but it doesn’t shift enough to be painful or ill fitting. The strap isn’t as long as some of our other picks, such as the Herschel Seventeen Hip Pack, but it still fits a wide range of waist and chest sizes.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

JanSport Fifth Avenue Fanny Pack

Cheap, good-looking, and reliable.

For people who are curious about fanny packs or don’t want to spend a lot, this is a great starter bag. It’s sturdy, well sized, and comes in plenty of colors and patterns—but the main compartment lacks organization.

Commuter on a budget? Just looking to dip your toe into the world of fanny packs? Both are solid reasons to consider the JanSport Fifth Avenue Fanny Pack . But this midsize polyester bag could be for anyone, really, who doesn’t want to sacrifice quality for price: It’s a simple, functional, and well-constructed pack.

It’s a nice in-between size. With its 2.5-liter capacity, the JanSport fanny pack falls in the middle of the range, dimensions-wise, among our picks. It’s smaller than the Road Runner Bags Lil Guy Fanny Pack and Herschel Pop Quiz Hip Pack, similar in size to the (shorter but fatter) Dagne Dover Ace Fanny Pack, and larger than the Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Mini Hip Pack 1L. The main compartment of the bag lacks any internal pockets or organization, which is a bummer. The outside pocket is unusually large; it can accommodate a small notebook, a phone, and other loose items like pens and lip balm.

It’s well made. In our testing, the JanSport fanny pack’s sturdy polyester fabric was able to easily fend off water, even after 10 seconds under a running faucet. The pack’s strap is sturdy and stays put even when it’s carrying a heavy load. We also liked that the strap is highly adjustable—from 14 to 51 inches long—enabling this pack to fit a wide range of body types. (A fabric ring helps keep any excess strap material from flapping about.) But the strap is a bit on the narrow side, and it dug into the waists of some of our panelists.

It’s wearable. Our panelists appreciated the JanSport fanny pack’s mixture of simplicity and style. This is a pack that can be easily thrown on with all kinds of casual outfits—it blends in with an outfit rather than upstaging it. And it comes in about a dozen colors and prints to suit a wide range of tastes.

• We’d prefer if this bag had some internal organization in its main compartment.
• The strap is a bit too narrow and dug into the waists of some of our panelists.

Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Mini Hip Pack 1L

Lightweight and adventure-ready.

This light, water-resistant nylon pack is great for shorter hikes or tossing into your vacation suitcase, since it takes up barely any space. But it doesn’t have room to hold all that much.

For active types in search of a lightweight, compact pack to bring along on hikes, dog walks, or bike rides, the Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Mini Hip Pack 1L —made from recycled ripstop nylon—fits the bill. It’s also well suited for travelers, since it packs down to practically nothing and leaves your hands unencumbered while sightseeing. Wherever you find yourself, the Patagonia Ultralight is a pleasure to wear: It has a soft, padded back that makes it feel cozy around the waist, and the pack sits comfortably against your body.

Note: The Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Mini Hip Pack 1L is a slight redesign of one of the original picks in this guide, the Patagonia Lightweight Travel Mini Hip Pack. Unlike the previous model, this newer one is, per Patagonia, “highly water resistant,” and its body fabric, lining, and webbing are made of recycled materials. (We have not retested this pack since the redesign.)

It’s pint size. The Patagonia fanny pack is the smallest pack we recommend, with a capacity of just 1 liter. The main compartment has room for a smartphone and a few additional items, like a bottle of sunscreen or a small makeup kit. It doesn’t have organization, but given its limited capacity, you won’t have much to organize anyway. This pack has a front pocket with a key clip that can house a few more small items. Our panelists gave this pack the thumbs-up for dog walks or short bike rides, but you’ll probably need something larger for more serious treks.

The Patagonia pack also has the shortest strap of any of our picks (by far), with a maximum length of 36 inches, so it may not fit people with larger waists—a complaint that users mention multiple times over on the Patagonia website.

It’s packable. This oval-shape Patagonia fanny pack can be folded up into its own front pocket and easily tossed into a suitcase for getaways. But if you’re planning to use this as your primary day bag once you reach your destination, just keep in mind the limited capacity—beyond the essentials, you won’t have much room for toting things like guidebooks and souvenirs.

• This pack’s petite size allows room for only the true essentials.
• The unusually short strap (with a 36-inch maximum length) may not fit many people’s waists.
• The strap of this pack must be adjusted from both sides (unlike with most other packs), which is a nuisance.
• Warranty: Patagonia gear is covered by an open-ended guarantee that covers defects, returns (for any reason) and repairs; damage caused by usual wear and tear is subject to a repair charge
• Dimensions and capacity: 4.75 by 8 by 2 inches; 1 liter
• Strap length: 8 to 36 inches long
• Weight: 3.5 ounces
• Colors: nine, including color block and solid

Road Runner Bags Lil Guy Fanny Pack

Utilitarian bike bag.

Though this roomy nylon pack is designed for urban cyclists—it even has a U-lock holster—its minimalist style appeals beyond the biking demo. But some may find it too no-frills for everyday use.

Don’t let the name fool you: The Road Runner Bags Lil Guy Fanny Pack is a surprisingly roomy—if decidedly no-frills—nylon fanny pack. And since it was originally designed with city cyclists in mind, it’s extremely durable, as well.

It’s built tough. The Road Runner Bags fanny pack is made from 1,000-denier Cordura fabric, which is scuff resistant and water resistant; in our tests, no water leaked in. Its zipper is covered by a layer of waterproof fabric to prevent moisture from seeping in through the crevices; the extra material did not get in the way of operating the zipper. This is a pack that was made to last, which is only appropriate, given its eye-raising price tag.

It packs a lot in. In terms of its specs, the Road Runner Bags fanny pack isn’t all that big: 10 by 5 by 2 inches, with a capacity of 1.6 liters. But because of its rectangular shape, thin material, and basic main compartment, which has just one internal flap pocket, it can hold about the same amount of stuff as the physically larger and trapezoidal Herschel Pop Quiz Hip Pack (13 by 6.5 by 3.5 inches). During testing, the Road Runner Bags fanny pack had enough space for a small paperback, a wallet, a smartphone, keys, and a snack-size bag of chips. Some testers found it bulky to wear, especially when seated. And since the heavy-duty Cordura material isn’t very pliable, it can feel uncomfortable when the pack is full.

It has some cyclist-centric features. The exterior of the Road Runner Bags fanny pack is wrapped in a strap of nylon webbing, which has four MOLLE (modular lightweight load-carrying equipment) loops built into the webbing for attaching things such as key rings, carabiner clips, or lights. On the back of the pack, you’ll find a 5-inch-wide U-lock holster that holds most bike locks, including Wirecutter’s top pick, the Kryptonite New-U Evolution Mini-7 .

• For such a simple bag, the price is surprisingly steep.
• We wish the main compartment, which has a solitary internal pocket, had more dividers.
• Some testers found the pack bulky to wear, especially when seated.
• The bag’s Cordura material can feel stiff and uncomfortable when full.
• The waist strap requires adjusting on both sides, like a backpack, which can be bothersome.
• Warranty: “ 30 days to life warranty ,” meaning that 30 days after purchase, the customer is responsible for shipping costs and some repair fees
• Dimensions and capacity: 10 by 5 by 2 inches; 1.6 liters
• Strap length: 33 to 47 inches long
• Colors: seven

Herschel Pop Quiz Hip Pack

Big and durable.

This polyester pack is the same size as a standard purse or tote, and it allows you to go hands free. But its large capacity means it can get uncomfortable when fully loaded.

Understandably, not everyone is willing to make the transition from a regular handbag or tote to a fanny pack if it means leaving some of their beloved gear behind in the process. (Hello, all five lip balms!) But with the Herschel Pop Quiz Hip Pack , you don’t need to make that sacrifice: At 3.5 liters, it’s the roomiest of any of our picks. It also has one of the longest, most accommodating straps—it can be adjusted from 25 to 51.2 inches long—so it fits a wide range of waist and chest sizes.

Note: Herschel’s Pop Quiz Hip Pack is an updated model of our previous Herschel pick, the Seventeen Hip Pack. Unlike its predecessor, the Pop Quiz Hip Pack is made from recycled “EcoSystem” polyester fabrics, created from 100% post-consumer water bottles . It also features an additional quick-access zip-pocket on top of the pack and an internal mesh slip pocket. Plus, its straps are longer, and they can be adjusted on both sides. (We have not retested this pack since the redesign.)

It lives large. This is the bag to get if you don’t travel light. “I could easily leave another bag at home in some scenarios and pack everything in it,” said Makula Dunbar, manager of commerce partnerships. The main compartment fits a small paperback, a clutch wallet, a smartphone, a phone charger, and car keys. This model also has a front zip pocket (with a key hook) that’s large enough for a smartphone, travel tissues, a work badge, and a pack of gum.

When Herschel gave this pack a slight redesign in 2024—changing its name from the Seventeen to the Pop Quiz in the process—it added a quick-access zip pocket to the top of the bag, making it easy to store and grab little essentials, like hair pins or a credit card. (An internal mesh slip pocket was added as well.)

But the Herschel fanny pack’s spaciousness can be a blessing and a curse. When it’s full of gear, it feels heavy if carried centered at the waist; sliding the bag around to the hip (or wearing it slung across the shoulder) may help ease the load.

It’s durable. This Herschel fanny pack is made of thick, scuff-resistant 600-denier polyester. The buckle on the waist strap is sturdy and unusually large; people with limited hand strength may need two hands to unbuckle it. The front pocket’s zipper teeth are cloaked in a waterproof seam, which keeps spills or a surprise rainstorm from damaging the contents within (and also, annoyingly, makes the pack harder to open and close). Water didn’t penetrate the bag during our tests, although it did take hours for the exterior fabric to dry.

A fully weather-resistant version of this bag is also available, which we have not tested. It has a matte, weatherproof coating and only one main zippered compartment. But at 2.0 liters, it’s quite a bit smaller than the standard 3.5 liter Herschel Pop Quiz Hip Pack.

It doesn’t try too hard. The Herschel Pop Quiz Hip Pack gives off classic (if basic) fanny pack vibes. “It’s not particularly cute, but it’s somehow lovable in its unabashed dorkiness,” said staff writer Dorie Chevlen. It’s structured and trapezoidal; some fanny packs are oblong-shaped and can press against your midsection, like the Tinyat Small Fanny Pack, featured in the Competition section.

• The waterproof material around the front-pocket zipper teeth makes this pack harder to open and close than most bags we tested.
• The buckle on the strap is large, and people with limited hand strength may need two hands to unbuckle it.
• When it’s packed full of gear, the Herschel fanny pack feels heavy to carry centrally at the waist. (Shift the bag around to your hip to ease the burden, or carry it over the shoulder.) It may not be ideal for those with smaller frames.
• Dimensions and capacity: 7 by 12 by 3.5 inches; 3.5 liters
• Strap length: 25 to 51.2 inches long
• Weight: 7 ounces
• Colors: over 20 colors and prints

We started out with a list of 47 fanny packs in a variety of sizes and designs. By narrowing in on the key criteria of aesthetics, strap length and adjustability, and price, we were able to whittle that list down to 22 models for in-person testing. The finalists were broken down by small, medium, large, budget, and leather.

We checked each pack for defects and evaluated the quality of the buckles, seams, and zippers. Then we supplied a testing panel with items such as a wallet, keys, tampons, lotion, a smartphone, lip balm, and wet wipes, and we filled each fanny pack with our essential gear to assess the storage capacity. With the bags loaded up, we paid attention to how comfortable they were to wear at the waist and across the shoulder, and how secure the buckles and straps were while worn.

We also ran the bags under a kitchen faucet to test their water resistance.

Finally, we had 10 Wirecutter staffers, with heights ranging from 5-foot-2 to 6-foot-2 and weights ranging from 105 to 200 pounds (and with differing preferences for wearing the packs crossbody or around the waist), take the packs home for continued testing. They used them for daily commutes and weekend excursions, then shared their feedback on the bags’ overall fit, quality, and style.

This is not a comprehensive list of everything we’ve tested for previous iterations of this guide, just what’s still available.

The medium Adidas Originals National Waist Pack didn’t expand, and the Big Bud Press Fanny Pack had a wonky strap. The Patagonia Black Hole Waist Pack 5L was the largest pack we tested, and it was too big to feel comfortable.

We tested multiple budget packs, including the  Everest Signature Waist Pack , the  Tinyat Small Fanny Pack , the  Waterfly Fanny Pack With One Water Bottle Holder , and the  Waterfly Lightweight Water-Resistant Fanny Pack 1L . None of them matched our low-cost  JanSport pick’s style and utility.

We tried the small Fila Fanny Pack , the Herschel Fifteen Hip Pack , and the KAVU Spectator , but they weren’t as stylish and comfortable as our picks. The Tom Bihn Side Effect has a detachable strap; unfortunately, that strap detached itself constantly.

Things To Consider With Waterproof Backpacks

Not all waterproof backpacks offer the same levels of protection. If you want to be certain that your belongings will be safe, consider the following before you commit:

You will need a bag that is big enough to carry all of your stuff, yet small enough to remain lightweight and easy to take anywhere. Most backpacks come in a variety of sizes, and whether you choose a daypack , a weekend backpack, a multi-day backpack, or even a full-size expedition backpack, there are plenty of waterproof backpacks out there to suit your requirements.

As a basic guide, a waterproof backpack comes in the following sizes:

• Daypacks usually range from 20- to 35-liter capacity and are designed to carry an extra layer of clothing, water, food, and essentials for days out both at home and away.
• Weekend backpacks range from around 40- to 50-liter capacity and offer you much-needed extra space to stow sleeping bags, toiletries, and extra clothing. These are suitable for a few nights away, or as an addition to your daypack.
• Multi-day backpacks offer 50- to 70-liters of backpack volume and come with harnesses to help carry the extra weight of enough gear to last you up to a week.
• Expedition backpacks are heftier, heavier, and designed for full-on adventures. Offering 70- to 95-liter capacity, as well as lots of options for additional storage space, these are perfect for around-the-world adventures.

Bottom Line: Whatever size you choose to use, making sure your backpack is waterproof will protect all of your gear, no matter how much you take or how long you will be traveling. You also might want to take along a waterproof jacket , too.

Rule number 1 when it comes to using a backpack is to never make it too heavy. Lumbar supports, chest straps, and compression systems can help to take the strain off your back, but the heavier the backpack, the harder it is to carry.

You should be able to comfortably carry your bag on your shoulders for a decent amount of time if you want to be able to use it when traveling. Your fully-loaded backpack should not weigh more than about 20% of your body weight , while your day hiking pack should not weigh more than about 10% of your body weight.

There are lots of different ways to comfortably carry your backpack with you wherever you are headed. Larger backpacks usually offer a combination of ways to carry your gear with you, while smaller ones may only have simple shoulder straps to keep your stuff close on the go.

• Backpack Straps — The most recognizable of all baggage handles, backpack straps sit across your shoulders and are simply designed to hold the pack against your body
• Sternum Straps — Designed to help distribute the weight of the backpack and prevent the shoulder straps from sliding off of your arms when moving
• Shoulder Straps — Not to be confused with backpack straps, despite them both being carried on the shoulder, this long, single strap is used to carry the backpack horizontally (think gym bags and shopping totes) and is useful for moving quickly
• Carry Handles — Vital for quick grabs and careful throwing, when you may need to move your backpack quickly to get it out of the way, throw it into the trunk of a car, or pick it up from the luggage carousel

Many manufacturers may claim that their backpacks will survive the heaviest of downpours when in reality they are simply water-resistant and not fully waterproof. Take caution, as this could mean the difference between wet clothes and a waterlogged laptop, or not.

Waterproof backpacks are usually made of nylon and are coated in silicone, acrylic, or polyurethane to ensure that no water leaks through their layers. Once coated, these bags are designed to keep your gear safe, even when submerged.

Water-resistant backpacks, on the other hand, can offer varying degrees of resistance depending on the individual thread count. They may be able to deal with a bit of drizzle, but plain nylon will not be able to keep your possessions dry if you are caught in a storm or your bag falls into a river.

Bottom Line: Make sure that you choose a backpack that is fully waterproof rather than water-resistant. 

Waterproof bags can be made from a variety of different materials, but by far the most common is nylon . When nylon fabric has a high thread count, it can be impressively water-resistant on its own, but for guaranteed protection against wet conditions, an additional waterproof coating is often added.

Bags made from PVC vinyl, PVC, or rubber also offer excellent protection against water damage.

Wearing your backpack for long periods can be uncomfortable. Most reputable backpack manufacturers provide various features to help alleviate discomfort for more extended periods of wear. These could include:

• Adjustable shoulder straps to position the backpack high on your back for maximum comfort; these should also be padded to prevent them from digging into your delicate shoulder area
• Waist straps or hip belts to distribute the weight load to the hips and help to relieve pressure on the shoulders; these should also be padded and adjustable to ensure the most comfortable fit possible
• Torso measurements may affect fit more than your height; different makes and brands of backpacks come in various lengths, so have the length of your torso measured before you invest

11 October, 2016   / Stavropol was recognized as the most well-organized city in Russia as a result of the All-Russian competition "The most well-organized city (rural settlement) of Russia" held in 2015. The second place was taken by Ufa and Khabarovsk, Krasnoyarsk took the third place.

History of Stavropol

Foundation of stavropol.

People began to settle in the territory of present-day Stavropol and its environs in ancient times. This is evidenced by more than 20 settlements found by archaeologists here (from the Eneolithic era (4-3 millennium BC) to the Middle Ages).

With the arrival of the Polovtsians (Cumans), a Turkic nomadic people, sedentary life was interrupted. The Nogais and Kalmyks roamed here. In 1556, Astrakhan was taken by Russian troops and the Astrakhan Khanate ceased to exist. This opened the way for Russia to the North Caucasus and the Caspian Sea.

As a result of the Russian-Turkish war of 1768-1774, a new border was established from the mouth of the Terek River to Mozdok and further north-west to the fortress of St. Dmitry (Rostov-on-Don) and Azov. The need arose to protect this region on the southern outskirts of the Russian Empire by building a chain of fortresses.

In 1777, the fortress of Stavropol was founded - one of ten fortresses in the Azov-Mozdok defensive line. For the construction of fortresses and service in the garrisons, the Volga and Don Cossacks were relocated to the Caucasus.

The main work on the construction of the fortress was completed in 1778. It was a pentagon surrounded by earthen ramparts and ditches with a total length of 1,698 meters and an area of 10 hectares. In 1779, the fortress was attacked by a 1,500-strong detachment of Caucasian highlanders. The assault was repulsed and the fortress was not damaged. Retired soldiers began to settle near the fortress. They were supplied with weapons, oxen and horses. In 1782, 494 retired soldiers already lived there.

Stavropol in the 19th century

In 1809-1811, the earthen structures were replaced by stone defensive barracks. At the same time, to the east of the fortress, the Stavropol village of the Khopersky Cossack regiment arose, where its headquarters was located. The central part of the village was in the area currently occupied by the municipal market #1 (Nizhny).

Creating the Azov-Mozdok defensive line during the aggravation of the struggle with the Ottoman Empire for the North-Western Caucasus, the Russian government set itself the task of strengthening the borders and maintaining peaceful relations with the Circassians and other mountain peoples. The military administration of the Caucasus sought to establish economic ties with them - to develop the exchange and sale of goods. Stavropol became one of these centers.

Stavropol became a kind of main gateway to the Caucasus. The Great Cherkassky highway passed through the town connecting St. Petersburg and Moscow with the Caucasus. In 1816, the first printing house in the North Caucasus appeared here. In 1847, Caucasian Oblast was transformed into Stavropol Governorate with the center in the town of Stavropol. It began to play an increasingly prominent role in the cultural life of the Caucasus. In 1853, the population of Stavropol was about 17,000 people.

After the uprising of the Decembrists, a lot of its participants were exiled here. In 1837-1841, Stavropol was visited by Mikhail Lermontov, exiled to the Caucasus. Here he met with Dr. N.V. Mayer, who became the prototype for Dr. Werner in Lermontov’s novel “A Hero of Our Time”. In 1845, the first Russian theater in the Caucasus was opened in Stavropol.

With the formation of Kuban and Terek Cossack oblasts and the end of the Caucasian War, the military-political and economic importance of Stavropol dropped sharply. This trend was further aggravated by the construction of the Rostov-Vladikavkaz railway, which opened in 1875. Stavropol found itself far away from the railway. However, it still remained one of the centers of the grain trade. Telegraph communication between Moscow and Tehran, London, Bombay was carried out through Stavropol and Tiflis.

Stavropol in the 20th century and beyond

At the beginning of the 20th century, there were 27 Orthodox parishes in Stavropol, a Catholic church, a synagogue, a Lutheran church, and a mosque. In 1913, the population of Stavropol was about 62,400 people. In the 1920s-1930s, almost all of them were closed. Only the Assumption Church, built in 1849, was not closed and functioned without interruption.

In 1934, Ordzhonikidze Krai with the center in Pyatigorsk was formed from the huge North Caucasian Krai. In 1935, Stavropol was renamed Voroshilovsk (in honor of Kliment Voroshilov, a prominent Soviet military officer and politician). In 1937, the center of the region was transferred from Pyatigorsk to Voroshilovsk.

According to the 1939 census, the city had 85 thousand residents. On August 3, 1942, during the Second World War, it was captured by the Germans. The city was liberated by the Red Army on January 21, 1943.

In 1943, Ordzhonikidze Krai was renamed into Stavropol Krai, the city of Voroshilovsk - into Stavropol. The rationale was as follows: “the difference in the name of the regional center and the region causes difficulties for institutions and citizens”.

In 1946, an industrial natural gas field was discovered near Lake Sengileevskoye. By the mid-1950s, the construction of the city gas pipeline was completed. In 1951, Stavropol was awarded the first place among the cities of Russia for the best landscaping. This success was repeated in 1952 and 1954. In the same years, the Central City Park repeatedly won the title of “The Best Park in Russia”. In 1956, there were 123,000 residents in Stavropol.

The 1960s-1970s saw the peak of industrial construction in Stavropol. During this period, dozens of enterprises of mechanical engineering, light, chemical, construction, food, processing, and other industries were commissioned, reconstructed and updated. In 1989, the population of Stavropol was about 318,000 people.

In 2014 and 2016, Stavropol took first place and was recognized as the most comfortable city in Russia.

The name “Stavropol” reflects the practice of assigning pseudo-Greek names to new settlements, which was widespread in the Russian Empire at the end of the 18th century. Thus, Stavropol literally means “the city of the cross”. The reason for choosing this name is a matter of debate.

According to one version, it arose because the fortress in the plan had the shape of an elongated polygon, the basis of which was two intersecting axes resembling a cross. According to another version, during the laying of the foundation of the fortress, the builders dug out a large stone cross. According to the third version, when determining the places for the construction of the fortresses of the Azov-Mozdok defensive line, the Stavropol fortress was marked on the map not with a dot, like all other fortresses, but with a cross.

Stavropol stands on the hills in the central part of the Ciscaucasia on the Stavropol Upland, about 1,400 km south of Moscow, at the intersection of the Rostov - Stavropol and Astrakhan - Elista - Nevinnomyssk - Cherkessk highways. One of the streets of the city is named “The 45th parallel” indicating its exact latitudinal position. Thus, Stavropol is equidistant from the North Pole and from the equator.

It is located on the watershed of the Azov and Caspian Seas, in the middle between them. This location initially gave Stavropol an important geopolitical significance, which is quite accurately reflected in the aphorism “Stavropol - the gates of the Caucasus”.

The territory of Stavropol is stretched from the southwest to the northeast by 24 km and from the south to the north by 16 km. The peculiarity of the city is that the forests are adjacent to the city buildings. Stavropol is often called one of the greenest cities in Russia.

Stavropol is a city in the south of Russia, which determines its climatic features, especially the amount of solar heat. The tropical marine air from the Mediterranean Sea brings stifling, humid weather in summer, thaws in winter. The average temperature in January is minus 2.3 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 22.3 degrees Celsius. Stavropol is known for frequent strong winds with a speed of 20-25 m/s. The windiest months are February and March.

The federal highways R216 Stavropol - Elista - Astrakhan and R269 Stavropol - Bataysk pass through Stavropol. The airport of Stavropol offers regular flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi. City transport is represented by buses, minibuses, trolleybuses, taxis. In summer, you can ride a bike around the city. The most popular rental point is located in Pobedy (Victory) Park.

The unique souvenirs for Stavropol include the healing herbal balsam “Strizhament” made from herbs and berries and infused with strong alcohol. Stavropol honey will be another tasty purchase. Main Attractions of Stavropol

Fortress Mountain - the historical center of Stavropol from where you can view most of the city from several observation decks. In the past, the Stavropol Fortress stood here. Here you can see one of the most recognizable symbols of Stavropol - the seven-meter monument to the Red Guard Soldier erected in the 1970s. Another attraction is a large light and music fountain with a diameter of 38 meters, opened in 2018. Sculptures installed along its edges depict 8 federal districts of Russia.

There is also the majestic Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. Originally built in 1843-1847, it was destroyed in the 1930s. In 2004-2012, the church was restored and became the tallest building in the Stavropol region (76 meters). It is often windy on Fortress Mountain, so dress warmly. Suvorova Street, 2.

Alexandrovskaya Square - one of the central and busiest Stavropol squares, named in honor of Emperor Alexander II in the middle of the 19th century. The second name of this place is Angel Square due to the fact that a monument to the Guardian Angel of Stavropol was erected here by the 225th anniversary of the city. Stavropol State Museum-Reserve - the oldest museum in the North Caucasus. The museum collection is housed in the building of the former trading rows of the 19th century. Stavropol Regional Museum of Fine Arts - one of the most interesting places in the city. The largest collection of art treasures in the North Caucasus is kept here. The museum has an impressive variety of monuments of ancient, Western European, Eastern, and Russian art. The department of decorative and applied arts has folk art and modern art objects. By visiting this unique place, you can learn a lot about the development of culture in the Stavropol region and the world from the 5th century BC to the 1990s. Dzerzhinskogo Street, 115-119.

Picture Gallery of P. M. Grechishkin - an art gallery located in the building of a former mosque in the central part of Stavropol. Its collection consists mainly of the works of the painter P. M. Grechishkin. In 1987, after the end of his personal exhibition, he donated more than 160 of his pictures to the city of Stavropol. The gallery also exhibits paintings by other artists - about 500 exhibits in total. Among them there are interesting works by young Stavropol artists. Mikhaila Morozova Street, 12.

Art Gallery “Parshin” - a private museum of contemporary art. Exhibitions of contemporary artists are held here, the staff conduct master classes and performances. The design of the gallery is a combination of Art Nouveau and interior elements imitating the old ones. General Ermolov Boulevard, 1.

St. Andrew’s Cathedral (1897) - a majestic church built in the Russian-Byzantine style with a pronounced central dome and a richly decorated facade. Dzerzhinskogo Street, 157.

Tiflis Gate - a triumphal arch erected in honor of the 30th anniversary of the Battle of Borodino (the key battle of the French invasion of Russia of 1812). The gate was located at the beginning of the Tiflis tract, from where carriages under the protection of the Cossacks departed in the direction of Vladikavkaz in the 19th century. In the 1930s, the monument was destroyed. In 1998, it was restored in its original appearance. Karla Marksa Avenue, 13.

Pobedy (Victory) Park - the main park of Stavropol with rides, cafes, and sports grounds typical for such a place. You can also find an equestrian club and a water park here. The park is quite crowded on weekends and on holidays. Shpakovskaya Street, 111.

Central Park of Stavropol . Its history began in the 19th century, when the mansion of General A. A. Velyaminov stood here, surrounded by a picturesque garden. Already at that time, the park had decorative flower beds, artificial ponds, benches, an orchestra platform, and a gazebo with a balcony. In Soviet times, it was repeatedly awarded the title of “The Best Park of the USSR”.

Cold Springs - a group of springs gushing out from under a layer of limestone, at an altitude of 620 meters above sea level in the Taman forest. You can get here from Dzerzhinsky Street or by walking a little down from the memorial “Cold Spring” on Lenina Street. There are a lot of pools built at different levels here, so that the water flows smoothly from one to another. The pools themselves have steps for easy descent.

In summer, people come to this dense cool forest with springs for picnics. The bravest ones plunge into cool water, the temperature of which always remains unchanged, about +10 degrees Celsius.

“German Bridges” - the remains of viaducts and bridges in the vicinity of Stavropol built at the beginning of the 20th century as parts of the Armavir-Tuapse railway, which was partially destroyed during the Russian Civil War. This name was given due to the fact that engineers from Europe, in particular from Germany, took part in the construction. Some of the bridges are still in service today.
