10 Best Things To Do In the Port of Corfu, Greece + Port Info

corfu cruise port excursions

Welcome to the port of Corfu! (Post updated: March 2024)

Also known as Kerkyra (Κέρκυρα in Greek), Corfu is the second largest of the Greek Ionian Islands and the greenest island in Greece. With its UNESCO-listed Old Town, pristine beaches, centuries-old villages and various things to do, Corfu is a frequent port of call in the Eastern Mediterranean cruise itineraries. In this article, read about:

  • Port of Corfu  (Corfu cruise terminal, getting around, helpful links)

Port of Corfu

Corfu cruise port is located in Corfu Town (aka Kerkyra), the capital of Corfu island located on the eastern coast of the island. Cruise ships dock in the “New Port” (Nea Limani), situated around 1.5 km/1 mile (a 20-25 minute walk) west of Corfu’s old town which is the main tourist hub of the city.

The Corfu port is large and consists of a long L-shaped pier dedicated to both cruise ships and ferries. There is a terminal building at the exit of the port, and free shuttle buses are provided to transfer passengers between their pier and the cruise terminal building. In the terminal, you can find tourist information kiosks, check-in counters, a duty-free shop, free wi-fi, an ATM, and car rental agencies.

Outside the cruise ship terminal, taxis are available and the ride to Corfu Old Town usually costs around 10€ per vehicle one way. Some cruise lines may organize shuttle buses (free, or for an additional fee, depending on the cruise line) to Corfu’s old town. Alternatively, you can take a pleasant 20-minute walk along the coast to the old town.

Getting Around Corfu, Greece

  • The official currency in Greece is EURO (€). Local currency and credit cards are widely accepted. It is recommended to always take some cash with you as local buses and some places don’t accept cards. ATMs and currency exchange are available in Corfu Town.
  • The public bus network in Corfu is excellent and the towns are well connected with resorts, beaches and villages on the island. There are two lines: the Blue Line , which operates in the area of Corfu Town, and the Green Line , which covers the rest of the island.
  • The central bus station for blue buses is located at San Rocco – Georgiou Theotoki Square in Corfu’s old town. The blue buses connect the old town with the port, Kanoni, Mandouki, Benitses, Achillion, Gouvia and Kontokali. Buses #15 and #2b connect the port of Corfu and Corfu’s old town. You can check the schedule and timetables at https://astikoktelkerkyras.gr/
  • The central bus stop for green buses is located on Eth. Antistaseos street, near Corfu port. These buses cover routes to Paleokastritsa, Lefkimi, Acharavi, Roda, Messongi, Pelekas and generally all the beaches and villages on the island. The ticket prices depend on the final destination. You can check the prices and schedules at the official webpage https://greenbuses.gr/
  • Corfu Hop on Hop off buses are available and they stop at the port of Corfu as well, which is a very convenient option for cruise passengers who want to get a glimpse of Corfu on a sightseeing bus. There are two lines: Kanoni Line and Achilleion Line, and they run every 15-20 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the seasonality and whether the ships are in port. Kanoni Line covers the major city landmarks including the Old Fortress, Spilia Square, Spianada Square and Mon Repos Palace, while the Achilleion Line also goes to the Achilleion Palace and Gastouri Square. You can check Corfu Hop on Hop off sightseeing bus tours on Viator and Get Your Guide

1. Corfu Old Town

Corfu’s UNESCO-listed old town is best visited on a guided walking tour as the town itself is centuries-old with lots of cobblestones and historic narrow streets. The old town is sandwiched between the New Fortress on the western edge of the city and the Old Fortress at its eastern end. The top attractions include:

  • Spianada Square (The Esplanade) – This vast, green city park lies between the streets of the Old Town and the Old Fortress. Spianada is the largest square in Greece and claims to be the second-largest in Europe. Constructed by the French in the 19th century, the Esplanade is both a local and tourist hotspot, surrounded by cafes ideal for people-watching. Here, you’ll find statues, monuments, a large parking lot and Corfu Cricket Pitch, where you can see locals playing cricket, a game passed down to them by the British during the British occupation of Corfu (1814-1864). Check out Spianada Square tours and activities
  • Corfu Town Hall – Located on Dimarchiou Square (Platia Dimarchiou), the imposing Town Hall building was built between 1663 and 1693 and represents one of the finest examples of Venetian architecture on the island. Constructed primarily in marble and stone, the fascinating building was initially used as a club for the noblemen. In 1720, the building hosted the Noble Theatre of Saint Giacomo of Corfu, the first Greek opera house. In 1903, it was turned into a Town Hall.
  • Saint Spyridon Church – This Greek Orthodox church is the most important religious monument in Corfu dedicated to St Spyridon, the patron saint of Corfu. It was built in the 16th century and houses the relics of Saint Spyridon, kept in an ornate sarcophagus inside the church. The Church of Saint Spyridon is known for its red-domed bell tower, the highest bell tower in the Ionian Islands.
  • Liston – The name “Liston” refers to the pedestrian street and neighborhood on the western edge of Spianada Square. It was constructed during the French domination in the Ionian Islands (1807–1814) and imitates Rue de Rivoli in central Paris. This place is packed with trendy cafes and overlooks the vast Spianada Square.
  • Church of Saints Jacob and Christopher – This historic cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Corfu, Zakynthos and Cephalonia. It is located at Dimarchiou Square and is known for its valuable art collection.
  • Banknote Museum of the Ionian Bank – Housed on the first floor of an elegant historic building, this interesting museum displays a collection of Greek paper money and coins spanning 180 years of history.
  • Corfu Museum of Asian Art – Founded in 1928 as the Museum of Sino-Japanese Art, this stunning museum contains 15,000 works of Asian art from private collections and individual item donations. The museum is housed in the Palace of Saint Michael and Saint George, originally used as the residence of Britain’s High Commissioner and later by the Greek Royal family.
  • Casa Parlante Museum – Housed in a 19th-century historic mansion, Casa Parlante is a unique history museum that features animatronic figures that recreate the everyday life of the island’s 19th-century nobility.
  • Old Port – Only 500 m north of the Old Town, you can walk along the Old Port of Corfu and admire the picturesque harbour and the view of the New Venetian Fortress.
  • Archaeological Museum of Corfu – Only a 10-minute walk south of Spianada Square, a little bit outside the old town area, the archaeological museum showcases fantastic collections tracing the island’s history from the Paleolithic area to Roman times.

2. Old Fortress (Palaio Frourio)

Built by the Venetians in the second half of the 16th century, the imposing fortress was built on the site of an ancient Byzantine fortification and lies on a small, rocky peninsula east of the old town. It is accessed via the Contrafossa moat bridge across from Spianada Square and overlooks the picturesque Mandraki Marina and the turquoise Strait of Corfu.

Inside the Old Fortress, you can visit several points of interest including the Byzantine art collection, the Holy Church of St. George, the Venetian Prison, and British Gunpowder Depots. There is a lighthouse at the highest point of the promontory, offering unmatched views of the town and Albania across the strait.

3. New Venetian Fortress

Only 800 m west of Spianada Square, a massive New Fortress sits on top of the hill of St. Mark and dates from 1577. The fortress features a maze of empty passages, arched chambers, galleries, ventilation shafts, stairs and ramps and offers magnificent views of Corfu Town and the sea.

4. The Achilleion Palace

Tucked in the village of Gastouri, 10 km/6 miles (a 20-minute drive) south of the port of Corfu, the lavish Achilleion Palace was built in the second half of the 19th century for the Empress Elisabeth of Austria, also known as Sisi. The palace served as the Empress’ summer refuge after the tragic death of her only son Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria in 1889.

The magnificent mansion was built in a neoclassical style inspired by the motives of the Greek mythical hero Achilles whom Sisi admired. Set on top of the hill overlooking the sea, in a landscape filled with olive groves and lush vegetation, the palace boasts beautiful gardens and currently operates as a museum. For information about the price and opening hours, check the official webpage https://achillion-corfu.gr/

5. Mon Repos

Mon Repos is a villa nestled in the forest of Palaeopolis, south of Corfu Town and approximately a 10-minute drive southeast of Corfu cruise port. The neoclassical mansion dates from the 19th century and was built as a summer residence for the British Lord High Commissioner Frederick Adam, and his second wife, Diamantina “Nina” Palatino.

Throughout history, it housed the School of Fine Arts and was a place of residence for multiple important historical personalities, such as Empress Elisabeth of Austria, the Greek Royal family, and others. Nowadays, the mansion houses the museum and a wonderful park surrounding the villa is open to the public.

6. Church of the Holy Apostles Jason and Sosipater

The oldest Greek Orthodox church on Corfu is dedicated to two saints, Jason and Sosipater, who were the first to teach Christianity to the inhabitants of the island in the 1st century AD. This beautiful church is located in the Garitsa neighborhood, near the archeological site of Paleopolis, a 10-minute drive southeast of the Corfu cruise terminal. The church was built in the 11th century on the site of an ancient temple and boasts unique Byzantine architecture with a decorated interior and valuable artworks.

7. Kanoni and the Mouse Island

Kanoni is a small peninsula located around 4 km/2.5 miles (less than a 10-minute drive) south of Corfu Town, renowned for the iconic Monastery of Panagia Vlacherna and Pontikonissi islet, which literally means the “Mouse Island”. The Corfu Airport occupies the western part of Kanoni, while the south and east feature a few small beaches.

The 17th-century Monastery of Panagia Vlacherna is the symbol of Kanoni, built on a small islet south of the Kanoni peninsula accessed via a stone pier (this little islet is not to be mixed with the Mouse Island which is bigger and located just behind it). From the church, there are daily boat departures to the tiny Pontikonissi island and it takes only a 5-minute boat ride to reach it. Due to its small size, this lush, green island is known as the “Mouse Island” and the only landmark you can visit here is a small Byzantine chapel dating from the 13th century.

This scenic area can be best admired from two cafeterias located on top of the hill overlooking Vlacherna Monastery and Mouse Island. You will also frequently see airplanes landing and taking off, as the airport lies only a few km from there.

8. Corfu Beaches

The east coast of Corfu boasts numerous beaches perfect for swimming due to the calm sea, however, some of the most beautiful and scenic beaches are nestled along the island’s west and north coast. The most popular beaches include:

  • Paleokastritsa – Tucked in the village of Palaiokastritsa, Paleokastritsa beach is set in a lush scenery featuring a picturesque harbour and stunning bays surrounded by olive tree forests. There are a few sandy and pebble beaches in the area, including Agia Triada , Agios Spiridon Beach and La Grotta Beach . You can climb to the surrounding hills and discover centuries-old churches and monasteries ( Chapel of Agios Georgios and Monastery of Paleokastritsa ), incredible viewpoints, and a wide variety of Greek taverns and cafes offering jaw-dropping views of the area. Distance from Corfu cruise port: 21 km/13 miles (a 30-minute drive). Check out Paleokastritsa Tours and Tickets
  • Glyfada Beach – One of the most popular beaches in Corfu lies on the west coast and is awarded the Blue Flag status for its pristine waters. A long stretch of soft golden sand is particularly popular for a younger crowd, and the cliffs surrounding the beach offer unique photo ops. You can enjoy numerous facilities in the area, including beach clubs and restaurants, and a car park. Distance: 16 km/10 miles (a 30-minute drive). Explore Glyfada Beach tours and activities
  • Canal d’Amour (Kanali tou Erota) – Nestled in the village of Sidari on Corfu’s north coast, the legendary “Channel of Love” is one of the most scenic places on the island. It boasts unique rock formations that form a series of beautiful coves and canals and has a small beach where you can enjoy the picturesque scenery. Distance: 36 km/22 miles (a 50-minute drive)
  • Agios Georgios Beach – The long stretch of white sandy beach is located on the island’s west coast and is lined with cafes and restaurants. Water sports and supermarkets are available. Distance: 30 km/18.5 miles (a 45-minute drive)
  • Dassia Beach – Dassia is a small village located only a 15-minute drive northwest of Corfu Town. This tourist resort has a nice, developed beach perfect for families due to its calm, shallow water and lovely views of neighboring Albania. Distance: 11 km/7 miles (a 15-minute drive)
  • Barbati Beach – This long pebble beach lies 17 km/10.5 miles (a 25-minute drive) north of the port of Corfu and features turquoise, crystal-clear waters.
  • Kassiopi – This fishing village lies on the northeast tip of Corfu and has several beautiful rocky beaches. Distance: 34 km/21 miles (a 50-minute drive)
  • Faliraki Beach – If you decide to explore Corfu Town and still take a dip in the Ionian Sea’s crystal clear waters, head to Faliraki beach located 700 m north of Spianada Square. Although it doesn’t have a developed beach, the place has a few bars and restaurants and access to the water via stairs and a concrete platform. It’s a great spot to chill and enjoy views of the Old Fortress.

While in Corfu, make sure you treat your taste buds with delicious Greek food that includes fresh seafood, meat dishes such as gyros, souvlaki and moussaka, fresh salad with fresh olives and cheese, and tzatziki dip with pita as an inevitable starter. Top off your meal with a shot of Ouzo, the local brandy, or a glass of white wine from the region.

The main focus is on white wine that you can taste in local restaurants, but for an ultimate experience, you can book one of the wine-tasting tours in one of the estates scattered around the island. Corfu aka Kerkyra (Κέρκυρα in Greek) is an island located a few miles off the west coast of Greece in what is known as the Ionian sea. Although it is a relatively small island, Corfu is the second largest of the Ionian Islands (Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Ithaca, and Lefkada are the other major ones).

The northern tip of the island is just 2 miles from Albania, separated by a strait, whilst the southern part lies 18 miles from the Western Coast of mainland Greece.

Where is the cruise port in Corfu?

Cruise ships dock in the New Port (Neo Limani) just a couple of miles from the main attraction in the island: Corfu's Old Town, a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the main reason why cruise ships visit this Greek island.

Corfu Greece Port Guide

Warm Mediterranean sun and serene beaches are two main reasons why travelers come to Greece, and the island of Corfu happens to have an excess of both. Corfu cruises have risen in popularity in recent years, and luckily Corfu takes its popularity in stride. After all, Corfu’s elegant cobblestoned streets and stunning blue sea make it a quintessential stop on a Mediterranean cruise . But beyond Corfu’s charm and beauty, you’ll find unmatched history and culture.

Corfu itself means ‘peaks,’ referring to the island’s famous two hills, each featuring their own massive fortress to ward off invasion. This Ionian island is strategically located at the mouth of the Adriatic Sea, making it a critical port for trade, commerce, and maritime warfare throughout the centuries. Its rich history boasts a litany of sieges and occupations, and with that came an unforgettable mix of Venetian-style art and architecture, French design during the 17th and 18th centuries, and a classically Greek spirit all rolled into one island.

While on cruises to Corfu, Greece, explore Old Town, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. Leave plenty of time for attractions like Achilleon Palace, the Old Fortress, and the Corfu Museum of Asian Art — to name just a few. Take in the intermingling scents of olive trees, lemon trees, and fresh sea air. Corfu welcomes you with every winding alley, terrace, and hillside.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to corfu, theotoky winery.

Stop in for a wine tasting at one of the oldest wineries in Corfu. About a 25 minute car ride from Corfu Town, this family-owned estate produces red and white wines as well as signature olive oils. Don’t forget to make a reservation for a tour or a tasting at this busy winery. Their wine cellar is open from Tuesday to Sunday. An hour-long tour and tasting is only five euros.

French influence on Corfu is evident at the Liston. Designed during the short Napoleonic occupation of Corfu from 1807 to 1814, the multi-story houses were modelled after Paris’ most glamorous roads of the era. The Liston could best be described as a beautifully-designed esplanade, originally intended for French nobility to stroll through and connect with other high society in Corfu. Today, it’s perfect for people-watching and resting while en route to the OldFortress. While you’re there, stop in at the famous Liston Cafe for a coffee.

Old Fortress

Old Fortress is a site to behold—in fact, it’s part of the reason why Corfu successfully defendeditself against the Ottoman empire during three separate sieges, and today it’s a source of pride for locals. Learn about Corfu’s illustrious chain of occupations and handovers throughout thecenturies while admiring this formidable site.

Corfu Museum of Asian Art

Art aficionados will find no shortage of beauty in Corfu’s architecture, and as luck would have it, Corfu happens to provide the only art museum dedicated to Asian art in Greece. The museum is housed in the Palace of St. Michael and St. George in Corfu. You’ll find collections inside from from China, Japan, and India—a can’t-miss tribute to collections dating as far back as the 11th century BC. Open from 8am-8pm Tuesday through Sunday.

Top Things to Do in Corfu

See achilleon palace.

South of Corfu Town and accessible by bus, take a seven mile jaunt to Achilleon Palace, a historic building in Corfu. The Achillion Palace was built during the 1890 designed to emulate themes of the hero Achilles in Greek mythology. It functioned as a summer palace for Austrian royalty. Scale the intricate staircase and look out into the palace’s garden from an ornate terrace. Take in powerful, perfect views from the terrace of Corfu unfolding before you.

Explore Old Town

Marked as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2007, Old Town contains every bit of influence from Corfu’s many occupations. The town Bazaar is a hub for shopping and cuisine, and the tightly packed roads have restaurants, taverns, and boutiques for travelers and locals alike to shop and enjoy the Venetian-inspired structures and balconies. Old Town is an essential starting-off point while you’re exploring Corfu.

Visit the Village of Paleokastritsa

Northwest of Corfu, you’ll stumble upon a village called Paleokastritsa, which is rumored to be the site where Odysseus disembarked to meet Nausicaa for the first time in The Odyssey. Paleokastritsa is nothing short of mythical. Swim, snorkel, and sunbathe at the beach. After, take a fifteen minute walk from Paleokastritsa Beach to a historic 13th century monastery which offers sweeping views of the coast.

Walk Along Sidari Beach

Corfu cruises wouldn’t be complete without plenty of beach time. Sidari Beach is everything you’ve come to expect in a Grecian breach with sandstone formations that seem impossibly crafted. To the western side of Sidari Beach, see the fjords and a famous canal called Canal d’Amour, or the Canal of Love. Swimming in the passage of the canal promises a doozy of a legend: you’ll find your soul mate.

Families, too, can enjoy an all-ages water park in Sidari, which offers far less mythical results other than good old family fun. There are also boats available to take you on daily excursions to the Diapontia islands.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Corfu Cruise Port

Be sure to try each of these traditional Greek delicacies while you’re in Corfu. Try a few traditional dishes for you to try as you travel, like gyros, souvlaki, and more. What could be better than an appetizer of bubbling, fried cheese melted in a small pan? Saganaki is served with pepper and lemon juice and eaten with bread. Don’t miss the chance to drink ouzo in Corfu. In modern Greece, ouzeries are like cafés and can be found in nearly all cities and towns, including Corfu. Ouzo is traditional aperitif. Slowly sip with appetizers like octopus or calamari.

Pane & Souvlaki

Address: 77, Gkilford, Kerkira 491 00, Greece

A budget option in Corfu Town, serving skewers of tasty meats, warm pita, and all the Corfu classics. Unfussy and simple with outdoor seating available to people-watch in Old Town.

Rosy’s Bakery

Address: Skaramagka 367, Kerkira 491 00, Greece

This highly-rated bakery in Corfu has many options for treats, including vegan options, on the island. Traditional baklava, sweets made with Greek yogurt and honey, and much more is available for every level of sweet tooth, plus find a few savory options like spinach and cheese pies here too.

Chrisomalis

Address: Nikiforou Theotoki 6, Kerkira 491 00, Greece

Chrisomalis has been open for 150 years in Corfu’s Old Town. Try traditional dishes in an authentic, unassuming tavern setting.

Corfu has passed through endless hands of occupation since antiquity, The island’s geography, conveniently squeezed between Greece and Italy, attracted powers and conquests from both east and west. Over time, Corfu was occupied by the Goths, Lombards, Normans, and was fought over by the kings of Sicily and the Italian city-states of Genoa and Venice. Corfu bounced around between Italy and French rule for centuries before landing under British rule during the Napoleonic era in 1815, but in 1864 Corfu and the other Ionian Islands were ceded to Greece. Italian forces held Corfu again for a brief period in the 1920s, and even today, you can visibly see the Venetian influence on Corfu’s architecture.

During World War II, the city was occupied by the Italian and Germans from 1941-1944, and many buildings and landmarks were destroyed in the process. When Greece took back control of the island in 1944, Corfu placed continued emphasis on both tourism development and preservation of the island’s landmarks. In 2007, the Old Town of Kérkyra was named a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Choosing where to cruise is one half of a successful vacation: The right ship plus a carefully selected destination that matches your overall interests typically equals an enjoyable cruise experience.

So, what are the best cruise destinations for every type of traveler?

That depends. With several dozen destination options around the globe to choose from — everything from popular locales you can cruise to from U.S. ports to far-flung regions known to top many bucket lists — it can take a bit of research to find your perfect match.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter.

That’s why we’re here. We’ve been around the block (and around the world) when it comes to cruises. We’ve explored the most captivating cities, waded into the surf on world-class beaches, hiked unspoiled landscapes and gazed upon treasured landmarks. So before you book your next cruise, have a look at our picks for the best cruise destinations for every type of traveler.

Best cruise destination for beach lovers: The Caribbean

When it comes to optimal sun, sand and surf, it’s tough to beat the Caribbean. It also helps that every major cruise line offers multiple itineraries in the region, most from November to March but quite a few year-round. You can cruise to the Caribbean from more than 10 U.S. cities — everywhere from New York to Galveston, Texas — although the majority of Caribbean cruises sail from Florida ports: Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Port Canaveral and Tampa.

Which Caribbean islands have the best beaches? It’s impossible to choose since every island is fringed by talcum-soft sand and warm turquoise water and is home to lively beach bars offering music and tropical cocktails that will make your day in the sun all the more fun.

Cruises here are offered in three regions. Eastern Caribbean cruises visit ports including St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and the British Virgin Islands. The Western Caribbean itineraries feature calls on Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Roatan, Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico. The Southern Caribbean voyages sail to islands such as St. Lucia, Barbados, Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao.

Many cruise lines also call on Nassau in the Bahamas and their own Bahamian private islands , where beach days are sublime. Some longer itineraries (10 nights or more) also combine Eastern and Southern ports of call with less-visited islands such as St. Kitts and Antigua.

Best cruise destination for history buffs: The Eastern Mediterranean

The Eastern Mediterranean, where it meets the Adriatic, Ionian and Aegean seas, is home to century-spanning sites sure to tempt any history buff. Cruises in this region typically call on Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia and Italy, while some also visit Israel, Jordan and Cyprus. More than any other region, the Eastern Mediterranean offers cruisers the chance to step back in time simply by stepping off their ship.

For example, cruises often begin in Istanbul, home to the 6th-century Hagia Sophia and the elaborate Blue Mosque, constructed between 1609 and 1616. Ports of call also in Turkey may include Kusadasi for the nearby Roman city of Ephesus and its wondrous Library of Celsus. In Greece, medieval and Venetian architecture are thoughtfully preserved in the islands of Rhodes and Corfu, respectively. Your cruise might end in Athens, site of the 2,500-year-old Parthenon and its antiquities.

Or you can cruise from Venice, with its splendid 11th-century Basilica of San Marco and palazzo-lined canals, across the Adriatic to the coast of Croatia. These sailings typically call on Split (home to Diocletian’s Palace, which dates to the 4 th century) and Dubrovnik (with its postcard-perfect 13th-century walled Old Town), as well as the island nation of Malta (realm of the Knights of St. John).

If Israel and Jordan are must-visits, look for a cruise with Holy Lands in its title. These sailings often depart from Athens and also call on several Greek islands and Cyprus.

Best cruise destination for outdoor adventurers: Alaska

The 49 th State is a vast 665,400-square-mile wilderness. It offers an incredible 46,600 miles of coastline (longer than the shorelines of all the lower 48 states combined) and a unique and plentiful mix of wildlife. An Alaska cruise offers true outdoor adventure.

In port, choose from hiking amid boreal forests to sea kayaking among seals and sea otters. You can fish for salmon (and have it shipped home), zipline above a landscape inhabited by black bears and gaze down at massive glaciers from a seaplane or helicopter (and even land atop one).

Have a less-adventurous travel companion? They can pan for gold, ride a vintage train and dog-sled (and afterward cuddle adorable husky pups).

The Pacific Northwest port cities of Seattle, Washington and Vancouver, British Columbia are the gateways for the majority of Alaska cruises. Inside Passage itineraries are the most popular and cruise lines offer these sailings from May through September .

On a round-trip cruise, you’ll call on Juneau, Alaska’s remote capital that’s reachable solely by sea or air and offers access to Mendenhall Glacier. Other top ports are Ketchikan, known for wet-suit snorkeling and floatplane flightseeing; Skagway, where you can combine an invigorating hike and a relaxing river float trip; and Icy Strait Point, a top spot for sea kayaking and whale watching.

A highlight for many passengers is scenic cruising in Glacier Bay National Park . This 3.3-million-acre national park is home to more than 1,000 glaciers, including the accessible and photogenic Margerie Glacier, which extends 21 miles from the mountains to the bay. Have your camera ready to capture the action as huge chunks of Windex-blue ice calve off of its 250-foot-high face with a thunderous crack and crash into the frigid waters below.

Best cruise destination for honeymooners: French Polynesia

Lagoons that shimmer in a mosaic of the purest blues imaginable, palm-fringed islets comprised solely of pristine white sand, and Polynesian culture steeped in heart-pounding song and dance make a cruise through the islands of French Polynesia ideal for honeymooners. Tahiti and the other Society Islands — Moorea, Bora Bora, Raiatea, Huahine and Taha’a — offer a setting for celebratory romance that’s scenic and sensual.

Most cruises through the Societies are seven or 10 nights, with mornings spent exploring an island’s lush landscape by 4×4, visiting vanilla or black pearl farms or venturing into the lagoon for snorkeling excursions or shark and stingray feedings. In the afternoon, laze by your ship’s pool or give stand-up paddleboarding a try. Diving here is also superb, so couples who are certified can experience the thrill of underwater life beyond the lagoon.

On a cultural level, couples cruising through the islands of Tahiti can try new foods such as breadfruit and poisson cru (raw fish marinated in coconut and lime juice), melt into a state of blissful relaxation with traditional taurumi massage, and experience the soul-stirring drumbeats of Polynesian dance. Be sure to pluck a plumeria blossom and place it behind your left ear — to signify that your heart is spoken for.

Best cruise destination for city explorers: The Baltic

The sophisticated capitals of Scandinavia — Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo and Helsinki — plus other coastal cities such as Tallinn, Estonia and Gdansk, Poland, are each compelling in their own right. So, imagine the rush of urban euphoria you’ll feel while exploring all of them on a Baltic (or Northern Europe) cruise from May through September.

While itineraries range from seven to 14 nights and the ports visited vary by cruise line, most sailings call on Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki and Tallinn. The Danish capital is a fascinating blend of imperial palaces, photogenic landmarks (including the vibrant waterfront of Nyhavn and the Victorian-era Tivoli Gardens) and modern culinary and design innovations.

Equally captivating is Stockholm, where a stroll through Old Town (Gamla Stan) will take you back to medieval times. A visit to the one-of-a-kind Vasa Museum offers a fascinating glimpse at a doomed 17th-century wooden warship, and a few hours in the ABBA Museum will have you humming the band’s hits for hours afterward.

Then there’s Helsinki. Expect to be charmed by this quirky city with its unpronounceable street names, elegant Esplanade and cache of unique churches (among them the red-brick Uspenski Cathedral and the Temppeliaukion Church, aka the Church of the Rock). And Tallinn? The city’s remarkably intact medieval Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site encircled by red-capped storybook-style towers. Easily explored on foot, it’s home to architectural landmarks that include Gothic-spired churches, Hanseatic merchant houses and a Pseudo-Russian cathedral.

Best cruise destination for the culturally curious: Japan

A single-country cruise itinerary gives you a chance to enjoy a deeper dive into local culture. One of the most popular destinations for this type of immersive experience is Japan. As an island nation, it has a wealth of ports that can be explored on 12- to 14-night circle-island sailings offered by both large-ship and small-luxury cruise lines.

From the bright lights and youthful energy of modern Tokyo, an itinerary will visit 10 or so Japanese cities. Your ship will also call on Busan, South Korea as required by maritime regulations.

Kobe is your access point for Kyoto, with its temples and gardens, while Shimizu is your gateway to scenic Mt. Fuji. Visit the moving Peace Memorial Park honoring the tragedy of WWII in Hiroshima and historic Hirosaki Castle in Aomori. In Kanazawa, explore the well-preserved samurai and geisha districts. Don’t miss Sakaiminato, famous for its seafood and the Izumo-taisha Grand Shrine.

Along with enjoying Japan’s top sights on guided excursions, you’ll also have a chance to experience the country’s traditional music and dance, visit museums filled with centuries of art and soak in thermal hot springs. Be sure to sample culinary specialties, from udon noodles and sake to elaborate kaiseki multi-course feasts. Even better — you can do it all while only having to unpack once.

Best cruise destination for nature lovers: Panama Canal & Central America

Yes, the Panama Canal is manmade, but it cuts across 82 miles of Central American jungle on the isthmus of Panama to connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. A transit of the circa-1914 original or the 2016 extension takes a single day. The remainder of the cruise will be spent calling on ports in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Colombia (historic coastal Cartagena), Mexico and the Caribbean.

That means there’s plenty of nature to appreciate. Some ships will spend a day in Colon, Panama, which offers access to Chagres National Park and the Gamboa Rainforest Preserve. Both are home to indigenous species such as toucans, coatimundis and monkeys.

During a visit to Puntarenas, Costa Rica, the volcanic landscape and surrounding rainforest and cloud forest offer opportunities for hiking, kayaking and spotting native species such as howler monkeys, sloths and crocodiles. Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala is known for its coffee plantations and access to the historic city of Antigua. The region also offers the chance to hike the Pacaya Volcano or visit the ancient Mayan site of Iximche.

In the Caribbean, some Panama Canal itineraries call on one of the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire or Curacao) while others visit Grand Cayman, where stellar snorkeling and diving (and interaction with the playful residents of Stingray City) are top activities. On Mexico’s Pacific Coast, ports might include Huatulco, offering access to an iguana sanctuary and ecological park, or Puerto Vallarta, where you can enjoy a snorkel trip to Los Arcos de Mismaloya.

Best cruise destination for food and wine aficionados: Western Mediterranean

Italy, France and Spain are all celebrated for their distinctive cuisines and award-winning wines, which makes a Western Mediterranean itinerary perfect for culinary enthusiasts.

The fact that the region’s top cruise ports are the birthplaces of foodie favorites such as paella, pizza, spaghetti alla carbonara and moules-frites makes a cruise here a delicious indulgence. You can eat your fill of local cuisine in places such as Barcelona and Valencia in Spain, Marseille and Saint-Tropez in France, and Livorno (for Florence and Pisa), Rome and Naples in Italy.

Add in the Western Med’s top island ports, and it’s impossible to cruise here without enjoying some of the world’s most memorable foods and flavors. Olives and olive oil are an art form on the Spanish island of Mallorca, while wild boar is a rustic favorite on the French island of Corsica. The Italian island of Sardinia is known for its strong Cannonau red wine, and Sicily is the birthplace of the famous cannoli.

Some cruise lines are especially attuned to offering their guests local culinary experiences. These take the form of shore excursions (cooking classes, market visits and farm and winery tours) and onboard dinner menus that highlight regional specialties and local wines. FYI: Cruise ships also have fully equipped fitness centers where you can work off all the extra calories you’ll consume.

Best cruise destination for bucket-listers: Antarctica

When travelers dusted off their bucket list post-pandemic one of the places they most wanted to visit was Antarctica. The seventh continent, a place that belongs to no single nation but hosts research stations from almost 30, has fascinated adventurers for decades. But the swift expansion of luxury expedition cruising over the past five to seven years has made this frozen polar frontier the “It” destination of the 2020s.

What’s the experience like? On an expedition cruise, generally roundtrip from Ushuaia, Argentina, you’ll first have to cross the Drake Passage, a notoriously rough and windy body of water. Safely on the other side, you’ll arrive at landing points in the South Shetland Islands along the Antarctic Peninsula.

Whether viewing regiments of gleaming icebergs from your ship’s deck or photographing parades of waddling penguins against a surreal landscape of ice while ashore, the experience is like no other. Some expedition itineraries also venture farther south to the continent while longer sailings call on South Georgia Island and/or the Falklands.

Antarctica requires two things of visitors. The first is a healthy budget. Expedition cruises generally start at around $12,000 per person, although some major cruise lines offer scenic cruising in Antarctica — with no landings — for under $3,000 per person. The second is a moderate fitness level to be able to venture ashore in Zodiacs and explore the rugged landscape.

The cruise season spans just five months, from mid-November to March, and you’ll want to book far in advance so you have time to prepare.

Best cruise destination for travelers without a passport: Hawaii

If you’re passport-less or have let yours expire, you can still enjoy a tropical island cruise that’s exotic and yet reassuringly familiar. We’re talking Hawaii, where a seven-night inter-island itinerary visiting four islands doesn’t require that you have a passport. These itineraries are offered year-round aboard Norwegian Cruise Line ’s Pride of America.

Since you’ll be cruising in U.S. territory, you don’t have to worry should you need to leave the cruise early and fly back to the states because of illness or a family emergency. This can be a concern for passengers on round-trip, closed-loop sailings from Florida to the Caribbean or Bahamas who board only with a driver’s license and birth certificate.

Beyond the practical, a Hawaii cruise that begins and ends in Oahu and spends two days on each of the other main islands — Maui, Kauai and the Island of Hawaii (aka the Big Island) — offers plenty of time to enjoy the sights and even experience a cultural evening activity, such as a sunset luau. You’ll also avoid all the inter-island flights required for hotel stays.

Highlights of a Hawaii itinerary include a pre- or post-cruise visit to the historic sites of Pearl Harbor and perhaps even an overnight stay in Waikiki. On Maui, you can enjoy active thrills, such as biking down a switchback road on the volcanic slopes of Haleakala or snorkeling the offshore Molokini Crater.

Kauai is the place to admire the 50 th State’s lushest rainforests and to cruise past the scenic cliffs of the Napali Coast. And with two ports of call on the Island of Hawaii, you’ll enjoy the waterfalls of Hilo (along with access to Volcanoes National Park) and the sunny Kona coast, where snorkel trips and coffee farm visits are popular.
