Tour de France Stage 21: Tadej Pogačar wins third Tour de France title

Slovenia's Tadej Pogačar won the 2024 Tour de France with yet another commanding stage victory during Sunday’s time trial.

Pogačar is now the first man in the 21st century to win both the Giro D’Italia and Tour de France in the same season after winning six individual Tour stages along his way to the overall victory. The Slovenian won his third Tour de France following his victories in 2020 and 2021. He has now successfully reclaimed the title from rival Jonas Vingegaard , the 2022 and 2023 champion.

"I cannot describe how happy I am after two hard years in the Tour de France," Pogačar said after his victory. "This year everything (went) to perfection, I’m out of words.

"This is the first Grand Tour where I was totally confident every day," Pogačar added.

After three weeks of exhilarating competition between the sport’s greatest rivalry in Pogačar and Vingegaard, historic moments and over 2,000 miles of racing, this year’s final stage was historic as it switched Paris’ Champs-Élysées for the Promenade des Anglais. This year was the first time the finish line was not in or near Paris because the city is hosting the 2024 Paris Olympic Games .

The time trial included a 21-mile ride from Monaco to Nice, France, with rolling hills and an overall elevation gain of 695m − not a negligible figure but significantly less inclined than the recent mountainous stages. Pogačar led rivals Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel through every checkpoint of today's time trial. This year was the first time since 1989 that the competition ended with a time trial.

Although Vingegaard did not achieve a coveted three-peat, his inspiring runner-up performance was an extraordinary feat considering he returned to competition after having suffered serious injuries that hospitalized him for 12 days in April.

Belgium's Remco Evenepoel rounded out the general classification podium following a third-place finish in today's time trial. This result is an outstanding achievement for the 24-year-old who made his Tour de France debut this year. Evenepoel also won the white jersey, awarded to the best young rider, with a commanding lead. He will surely be one to watch in the future.

Looking forward, Pogačar said he will now turn his focus to the World Road Championships in September, where he will take on reigning World Champion Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands.

"Van der Poel looks really good in the World Championships jersey, but I want to take it from him this year," Pogačar said. "We’ll see."

Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar wins the time trial and the 2024 Tour de France

Tadej Pogačar is your 2024 Tour de France Champion. Just when you thought Pogačar could not be any more dominant, the Slovenian beat rival Jonas Vingegaard and World Time Trial Champion Remco Evenopoel to win the final stage of the Tour de France and seal his general classification victory. The Slovenian is now the only person in the 21st century to win the Giro D’Italia and Tour de France in the same season.

Pogačar looks unstoppable

Pogačar is on the brink of victory having just passed through the third and final checkpoint over a minute faster than rival Vingegaard.

American Matteo Jorgenson overtakes Harold Tejada as Stage 21 leader

Jorgenson has improved upon Harold Tejada’s time to become the current leader of today’s time trial in 47 minutes and 32 seconds despite a minor crash along the route. The general classification riders are still on the course and are on track to beat Jorgenson's time.

Tadej Pogačar extends lead over Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel

Pogačar passed through the second checkpoint 24 seconds ahead of Vingegaard and 51 seconds ahead of Evenepoel. The Slovenian is on track to win his sixth stage of the Tour on his way to officially winning his third Tour de France yellow jersey.

Tadej Pogačar establishes early lead over Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel

Pogačar led the golden trio through the first checkpoint, reaching the mark seven seconds ahead of Vingegaard and 26 seconds ahead of Evenepoel. These margins are currently too slim to make a difference in the general classification standings.

Richard Carapaz caps off successful Tour de France with polka-dotted jersey win

Carapaz has finished the time trial within the time limit, concluding a successful Tour de France and officially securing the polka-dotted jersey, which recognizes the field’s best climber. He is the first Ecuadorian man to win this jersey.

Slovenia’s Tadej Pogaçar starts final stage looking to win his third Tour de France

Yellow jersey wearer Tadej Pogaçar of UAE Team Emirates has officially started the final stage of what is likely to be his third Tour de France victory. Pogaçar has had such a dominant Tour that he should win the general classification standings barring any disaster such as a serious fall.

Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard begins

The 2022 and 2023 Tour de France Champion has started the time trial. The current runner-up in the yellow jersey standings, Vingegaard trails Pogaçar by over five minutes. Although only a catastrophe from Pogaçar could hand Vingegaard the win, the Dane has much to be proud of after returning to competition following serious injuries from a crash in April.

Remco Evenpoel is off!

Belgium’s Evenepoel of Soudal-QuickStep has started the time trial as the favorite to win today’s stage with the best time trial ability on paper. The white jersey wearer is the reigning World Time Trial Champion and edged out Tadej Pogačar to win the only other time trial of this Tour de France. Evenepoel is currently in third place in the general classification standings, approximately eight minutes behind lead Tadej Pogačar. Although he most likely will not be able to catch Pogačar or Vingegaard, he should be in a good position to defend his third-place podium position as well as his white jersey, which signifies the best young rider of the Tour.

Matteo Jorgenson falls

Jorgenson appeared to slip while zooming around a bend but promptly got up and resumed cycling. He appears to be okay.

Hometown hero Romain Bardet finishes his Tour de France

France’s Romain Bardet of Team dsm–firmenich PostNL has officially concluded what is expected to be his last Tour de France. The hometown favorite finished to resounding cheers to cap off one of the most successful French cycling careers of this generation. Although Bardet will finish outside of the top 10 in the general classification standings, Bardet got his storybook ending with a victory during the first stage of the Tour.

American Matteo Jorgenson starts time trial

Jorgenson , 25, has started the route from Monaco to Nice. He is the highest-ranked American on the general classification leaderboard, standing in eighth place after Stage 20 following a particularly successful second half of the Tour.

The first of the general classification leaders are off

Italy’s Giulio Ciccone of Lidl-Trek was the first of the top 10 general classification leaders to start the time trial. The race is heating up as the rest of the top contenders prepare to tackle the course.

Richard Carapaz sets off

Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz of EF Education–EasyPost has started the time trial. If he finishes within the time limit, he will officially become the first Ecuadorian to win the polka-dotted jersey that signifies the Tour’s best climber. He was already named the super-combative rider of the Tour earlier this morning.

Wout van Aert finishes an underwhelming Tour de France

Wout van Aert of Visma-Lease a Bike has finished his 2024 Tour de France with a time of 53 minutes and 38 seconds in the time trial, good for 74th place so far in today’s standings. The 29-year-old Belgian was the first of the realistic contenders for today’s stage win to set off. Van Aert has won nine individual Tour stages during his career, including two individual time trials, but did not come away with a stage victory this year despite several top-10 finishes.

American Neilson Powless finishes Tour de France with fourth-fastest time trial so far

Powless finished the time trial in 49 minutes and nine seconds, 55 seconds behind current leader Harold Tejada. He now sits in fourth place in today’s stage rankings with the best general classification riders, including American Matteo Jorgenson, still to come.

Harold Tejada overtakes Lenny Martinez in Stage 21 standings

Harold Tejada of Astana Qazaqstan has improved on Frenchman Lenny Martinez’s time to take a 10-second lead. The Colombian now leads today’s time trial standings with a mark of 48 minutes and 14 seconds. The field’s best general classification riders are still to come.

Mark Cavendish gives emotional interview

Cavendish spoke to the media after he finished the time trial.

"It was just about enjoying it," Cavendish said of today's stage. "There’s no pressure for me today, which is strange for a final stage of the Tour. I knew my family were waiting at the finish and I was just absorbing it. I think I got all the emotions out of the way yesterday and I could really just enjoy today."

Cavendish also confirmed that today’s stage was "likely" his last professional race and reflected on his career.

"I feel very lucky to have had the career I’ve had, to work with the people I have, to meet the people I have and be able to live the dream," Cavendish said. "You see the success, you see the photos of wins, videos of wins, but it’s rare people see everything that goes in behind, everything that makes it. It’s taught me a lot about myself, it’s taught me a lot about how to be a father, and that’s the biggest thing I take from the sport."

What is the green jersey in the Tour de France?

The green jersey is awarded to the best overall rider in the points classification. Points are awarded at stage finishes and intermediate sprints during stages, so the jersey usually designates the best overall sprinter of the Tour. Eritrea's Biniam Girmay was awarded the green jersey this year.

Why is the Tour de France not finishing in Paris?

The Tour de France will not finish in or near Paris for the first time in history because of the ongoing preparations for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games . Instead, the race will finish in the southeastern French city of Nice. The finish line is located at the Promenade des Anglais − Nice's version of Paris' Champs-Elysée, the traditional finish of the tour.

Biniam Girmay officially makes history as first Black green jersey winner

After finishing Stage 21 within the time limit, Biniam Girmay of Eritrea and Intermarché-Wanty is officially the first Black rider in history to win the points classification. Girmay has had a stellar Tour de France, establishing himself as the best sprinter of the field with his three stage victories and green jersey win, even after suffering injuries that required stitches during Stage 16 .

Jasper Philipsen finishes his Tour de France

Choosing to contest the stage with a road bike instead of a time trial bike, Belgium’s Jasper Philipsen has finished the time trial in 52 minutes and 55 seconds. After a disappointing start to the competition, Philipsen turned his fortunes around, winning three sprint stages , but ultimately lost his battle for the green jersey to Eritrea’s Biniam Girmay.

Mark Cavendish finishes final Tour de France

One of the greatest sprinters in history has officially said farewell to cycling’s most iconic competition. Great Britain’s Mark Cavendish, 39, crossed the Tour de France finish line for the final time in a time of 54 minutes and 38 seconds. The Brit was set to retire at the end of last season but returned for a final Tour de France after he crashed out of last year’s race. Cavendish finally got his fairytale ending to his inspiring career during this year’s Stage 5, where he sprinted to victory for a record-breaking 35th career Tour de France stage win. It’s safe to say Cavendish accomplished what he came for (and more).

Biniam Girmay has started!

Green jersey wearer Biniam Girmay of Eritrea is now on the course. Girmay has had a breakout performance during this year’s competition, picking up three stage wins with his fierce sprint finishes. Despite a crash during Stage 16 that left Girmay needing stitches, the Eritrean edged out Jasper Philipsen for the green jersey (points classification). All Girmay needs to do is complete the trial within the time limit and he will become the first Black rider in history to win the green jersey accolade.

Polka-dotted jersey wearer Richard Carapaz wins super-combative rider award

After votes from a jury and the public, Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz has been named the super-combative rider of this year’s Tour de France. Carapaz made history as the first Ecuadorian to win an individual Tour stage with his Stage 17 victory and the first to win the mountains classification after yesterday’s final group racing stage.

And they're off!

Italy's Davide Ballerini was the first to set off on the course, just ahead of his Astana Qazaqstan teammate Mark Cavendish, who is beginning his final Tour de France stage of his illustrious, record-breaking career.

Start times finalized

There will be a staggered start to the individual time trial with 90 seconds between each rider. The cyclists will start in reverse order of the general classification standings, with yellow jersey wearer Pogačar beginning the stage last at 12:45 p.m. ET. Italy's Davide Ballerini will be the first to start at 8:40 am ET.

Jonas vingegaard distances tadej pogacar in historic tour de france time trial rout.

  • OlympicTalk

Jonas Vingegaard won the Tour de France’s time trial by 98 seconds over rival Tadej Pogacar, considerably padding his lead in what has been one of the closest Tours in recent history.

Vingegaard, the defending Tour champion, now leads Pogacar, the 2020 and 2021 Tour winner, by 1 minute, 48 seconds with five stages left, two of which are expected to be competitive for the overall podium (Wednesday and Saturday).

“It’s the best time trial I’ve ever done,” said Vingegaard, adding that he thought Pogacar would be faster than him. “I even surprised myself.”

The Dane Vingegaard covered the 14-mile stage 16 in 32 minutes, 36 seconds. He led Slovenian Pogacar by 16 seconds at the first time check at 4.4 miles and added to it the rest of the way, including over a 1.7-mile, second-category climb near the end.

TOUR DE FRANCE: Standings | Broadcast Schedule | Stage by Stage

It marked the largest margin of victory in a Tour time trial since 2014, but that was a 34-mile stage. Mile for mile, this was the biggest blowout in a Tour time trial since 1962, according to ProCyclingStats.com .

Pogacar dominated the rest of Tuesday’s field, finishing 73 seconds ahead of third place Wout van Aert. He was a little bit shocked to be so far behind Vingegaard.

“I was hoping to be [wearing the] yellow [jersey] today,” Pogacar said. “It’s not easy to gain two minutes [back], a little bit less, but we try.”

Vingegaard began the day with a 10-second lead over Pogacar, making it the second-closest Tour going into the final week in the last 50 years.

Only the 2008 Tour, where Frank Schleck led by seven seconds over Bernard Kohl and eight seconds over Cadel Evans, was closer at that stage.

The race for third place is now closer than for the yellow jersey. Brit Adam Yates leads Spaniard Carlos Rodriguez by five seconds after beginning the time trial with a 19-second deficit.

The Tour continues Wednesday with stage 17, one of the last two mountain stages.

It’s the most difficult of the eight total mountain stages with more than 5,000 meters (3.1 miles) of elevation gain, capped by the beyond category Col de la Luze just before a descent to the finish.

“It’s definitely not over, especially if it’s tomorrow raining,” Pogacar said. “Then I can promise you it’s going to be interesting. Two more really hard stages to come, I think the hardest two of this Tour. Anything can happen.”

Correction: An earlier version of this post incorrectly reported it was the largest Tour time trial margin of victory since 2003.

Tour de France 2024 Stage 7 Highlights

Remco Evenepoel recovered from a scare to win a thrilling 25.3-kilometer Stage 7 time trial at the Tour de France 2024 on Friday, and Tadej Pogacar dug deep to keep the overall leader's yellow jersey.

It was a first Tour de France stage win for the 24-year-old Belgian time-trial world champion. He finished 12 seconds ahead of Pogacar, who was second on the day in the Burgundy vineyards.

Evenepoel was powering to a wider margin of victory but lost seconds after being startled by a sudden noise with three kilometers to go.

The Belgian at first thought he had a mechanical issue and bounced hard to test his bike and ensure he could continue.

"I thought, I had a problem, but in fact it was a noise from the crowd," said Evenepoel of the Quick Step team. "It was nothing really, but I lost 4-5 seconds. The fans were great, and it was wonderful to hear them banging like that, it was madness, a dream come true."

2024 Tour de France

Veteran Primoz Roglic was third at 34 seconds, and two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard was fourth at 37 seconds.

The result left the 'Fab Four' of favorites in the top four positions after seven stages of the 21-day race which ends in Nice.

Are Things At The TDF 2024 Stressful For Tadej Pogacar?

Pogacar holds a 33-second advantage on Evenepoel in the overall standings, with Vingegaard third at 1minute, 15 seconds.

"I knew I was putting in a good time," said Pogacar, who nevertheless looked glum at the finish line. "My sports director was being super positive in my micro."

The 25-year-old Pogacar, who won the 2020 and 2021 Tours, is targeting the first Giro d'Italia-Tour double since Marco Pantani in 1998.

"It's a long way to Nice, but if all goes well, I should be all right for the final day," he said. "There's not much to look forward to: stressful days. I can't wait to get into the mountains."

The four favorites sped down the starting ramp at Nuits-Saint-Georges within 10 minutes of each other, making the finale a nail-biting edge-of-the-seat affair.

At the raucous finish line, fans pounded on the barriers and cheered a see-saw struggle that panned out well for all four pretenders.

Evenepoel now has beaten Pogacar in all six time trials in which they have gone head to head.

Dane Vingegaard had beaten Pogacar in the last two time trials they faced off but dropped time on the Slovenian on Friday.

As his reputation grows day by day on this Tour, Evenepoel looked ahead to Sunday's stage, a 199-kilometer circuit through the Champagne region that includes 35 kilometers on gravel.

"I have gone over it twice," he said. "It'll be stressful, long, nervy - you can't quite win the Tour there, but you could lose it there with a bit of bad luck."

Before that, Saturday's stage is a rolling 183-kilometer run through more wine-growing regions, where attacks from the lower ranks should shake things up.

The first time trial showdown of the Tour de France lived up to the billing as the top GC contenders all put in a strong performance.

Time trial world champion Remco Evenepoel set the top mark despite having a mechanical scare in the final moments of the TT, while Tadej Pogačar limited the bleeding to 12 seconds to retain the yellow jersey. Primož Roglič and Jonas Vingegaard held their own at 34 and 37 seconds back respectively.

2024 Tour Championship starting scores for all 30 golfers at FedEx Cup finale

Scottie Scheffler is once again in pole position at East Lake.

New year, same result. After a full season of PGA Tour golf (and slightly shorter since the PGA Tour returned to a calendar-based schedule), Scottie Scheffler once again finds himself at the top of the FedEx Cup standings heading into the final event, the Tour Championship at East Lake .

Scheffler has dominated this year, winning six times on the PGA Tour, including his second Masters title, plus he won the gold medal at the Olympics earlier this month in Paris.

He leads second-ranked Xander Schauffele by more nearly 1,200 FedEx Cup points, and third-ranked Hideki Matsuyama by more than 2,700 points, which is about the same margin Matsuyama has on the No. 50 player in the standings, Eric Cole.

A Tour Championship tee marker with East Lake Golf Club in the background.

2024 Tour Championship: How to watch, TV coverage, streaming info, tee times

But, even after a historic season, Scheffler will begin the Tour Championship in the same position he has for the previous two editions: with a two-shot lead at 10 under.

This is year six of the Tour Championship’s handicapped format where players are given starting scores based on their position in the FedEx Cup standings entering the week. Scheffler will start this week at East Lake with a two-stroke lead on Schauffele and a 10-stroke lead on Justin Thomas, the last man in the field at No. 30 in the standings .

The change was made because under the old format, a player could win the Tour Championship and not win the FedEx Cup. It was also difficult to calculate points and keep track for the viewer at home.

This way, there is no more worrying about points and whoever wins the Tour Championship, starting strokes included, wins the FedEx Cup and the $25 million first-place prize.

Here’s what the starting strokes look like this year.

2024 Tour Championship starting scores

10 under:  Scottie Scheffler Eight under:  Xander Schauffele Seven under:  Hideki Matusyama Six under:  Keegan Bradley Five under:  Ludvig Aberg Four under:  Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Sam Burns, Patrick Cantlay Three under:  Sungjae Im, Sahith Theegala, Shane Lowry, Adam Scott, Tony Finau Two under:  Byeong Hun An, Viktor Hovland, Russell Henley, Akshay Bhatia, Robert MacIntyre One under:  Billy Horschel, Tommy Fleetwood, Sepp Straka, Matthieu Pavon, Taylor Pendrith Even:  Chris Kirk, Tom Hoge, Aaron Rai, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Justin Thomas

Now you might think the player at the top might have a significant advantage, but in fact, the top seed has only won the Tour Championship twice in the previous five editions of this format. Scheffler himself has yet to prevail when being sported a two-stroke lead the past two seasons.

In his two most recent FedEx Cup victories, Rory McIlroy came back from five and six shots back at the start of the week to hoist the trophy (and massive first-place payday) by Sunday evening. Last year, Viktor Hovland was two strokes back of Scheffler when he lapped everyone at East Lake to win his first FedEx Cup.

You can follow the action from 1-6 p.m. ET on Golf Channel on Thursday and Friday. Saturday’s broadcast is 1-2:30 p.m. on Golf Channel and 2:30-7 p.m. on NBC, and Sunday’s final round is 12-1:30 p.m. on Golf Channel and 1:30-6 p.m. on NBC.

2024 Tour Championship past winners: List of last 10 years winners explored

T he Tour Championship is upon us. The golf world, for the last time this season, will turn its focus to the PGA Tour for the final tournament.

After 36 events and the last two weeks of playoffs, just 30 golfers remain and only one will be crowned the season champion this weekend. Which golfers have been given that honor in the last decade?

Previous Tour Championship winners explored

The PGA Tour staggers points for all golfers in the Tour Championship. For example, this year, Scottie Scheffler enters ranked first, so he begins the tournament 10 under. That makes it easier for him and others at the top to win. In most years, someone who has had a good start ends up winning.

In 2023, that was Viktor Hovland . He shot 27 under across the weekend, defeating Xander Schauffele by five strokes. Rory McIlroy shot 21 under in 2022. That was enough to defeat Scottie Scheffler and Sungjae Im by one stroke.

In 2021, Patrick Cantlay was also -21, putting him one stroke above Jon Rahm for the victory. Rahm and Kevin Na had the best total output in the tournament, but the staggered scoring left Rahm without a win.

Dustin Johnson also shot -21 in 2020. He won the Tour Championship by three strokes over Schauffele and Justin Thomas . McIlroy was also the champion in 2019, shooting 18 under to beat Schauffele by four strokes.

Tiger Woods took home the trophy in 2018. He shot 11 under, beating Billy Horschel by two strokes. Schauffele earned the win the year before, shooting 12 under and landing one stroke up on Thomas.

McIlroy won again in 2016, this time in a playoff. His -12 wasn't enough initially to beat Kevin Chappell and Ryan Moore. Jordan Spieth won in 2015 thanks to a nine-under outing. That was four strokes up on Danny Lee, Henrik Stenson, and Justin Rose.

In 2014, Horschel finished three strokes ahead of Jim Furyk and McIlroy to capture the Tour Championship.

This year, Scheffler will look for the first such victory of his career and he begins 10 under to help him do that. Schauffele, who does have a win but plenty of close losses, will be right behind him at eight under.

Hideki Matsuyama (-7) and Keegan Bradley (-6) are also not far behind to start the tournament this week.

It's shaping up to be a wonderful competition and one of the golfers in the field will add their name to this historic list. The tournament begins August 28 and ends September 1. Unsurprisingly, Scheffler is this weekend's betting favorite at -110 to win it all (CBS Sports).

Pogacar storms to maillot jaune on stage 20 as Roglic's Tour de France bid collapses

Pogacar smashes time trial to overtake Jumbo-Visma rider, Porte moves onto podium

Tadej Pogačar ( UAE Team Emirates ) stunned the Tour de France to win the stage 20 time trial at La Planche des Belles Filles, taking the yellow jersey after one of the most shocking rides in recent memory to beat Primož Roglič ( Jumbo-Visma ) by 1:56 on the 36km course.

Heading into the penultimate stage, the 21-year-old had a 57-second gap to make up on his compatriot, though few predicted that the time trial specialist Roglič could actually cede the maillot jaune in a test against the clock.

However, Roglič shed time from the beginning, falling 13 seconds down at the first checkpoint of the day after 14km, and 36 seconds at the end of the flat 30km section of the course. Pogačar flew up the climb as Roglič's struggles continued with a less-than-ideal swap from his TT bike to a road bike.

He was still 20 seconds to the good at that point but seemed to collapse as he climbed the first category mountain, which was 6km long at an average of 8.3 per cent. In a matter of seconds, his virtual lead evaporated to a deficit, going into the red at the 3.9km mark and never looking like returning to green. He crossed the final checkpoint, 2.7km out, a devastating 1:22 down.

As Pogačar rode under the flamme rouge , he was in yellow by over 40 seconds, powering to the line as Roglič's teammates Tom Dumoulin and Wout van Aert watched what was unfolding on the big screen in stunned silence.

By the time Pogačar crossed the line in a time of 55:55 – 1:21 ahead of the previous fastest man Dumoulin, the race was already over with the UAE leader having surged up La Planche 22 seconds faster than anyone else, setting a new all-time climbing record in the process, despite changing his bike at the bottom.

Roglič battled through the final kilometres, but only kept losing time. His Tour de France dream had come to an end in the Vosges mountains as he collapsed after the finish, consoled by his waiting teammates.

"I think I’m dreaming. I don’t know what to say. It’s unbelievable," the new GC leader said at the finish line of stage 20. "My dream was just to be on the Tour de France [podium], now the dream is true. I’m here and now there’s only the last stage. This is unbelievable.

"I'm really proud of the team. They did such a big effort. To get the yellow jersey on the final day is what we dreamed from the start. We achieved that and it's amazing.

"It was not just me, it was all the team. We did a reconnaissance and I knew every corner, every pothole in the road, I knew when to accelerate and that's congrats to all the team. I pushed to the end and I made it."

Miguel Ángel López (Astana) was the last man to cross the line, having experienced a similar disintegration over the past hour. The Colombian clocked the 45th best time of the day – and only the 44th best on the climb – to finish over six minutes down on Pogačar.

Richie Porte (Trek-Segafredo), who lay 1:39 back in the morning, eased into the final podium spot, finishing third on the stage with a time of 57:16.

After the astonishing events of the day, Pogačar heads to Paris with a 59-second advantage over Roglič, while Porte lies in third, 3:30 down.

As well as the yellow jersey, Pogačar will take home the white jersey of best young rider, plus the polka dot jersey – the first rider to win all three at one Tour de France in history, since the white jersey didn't exist in the times of Eddy Merckx. Stage 12 winner Marc Hirschi (Team Sunweb), meanwhile, takes the combativity award while Movistar win the team classification once again.

How it unfolded

The penultimate stage of the Tour de France would take in the final mountain of the race, La Planche des Belles Filles, though at the end of a 36.2km time trial rather than a mammoth mountain stage.

The TT – which looked to decide the final podium spot, the makeup of the top ten, plus the destination of the polka dot jersey – took in 14km of flat roads to the first checkpoint. Then it was a long rise and shallow descent to the base of the climb at the second checkpoint, 30km in, before the 6km, 8.3 per cent climb to the line, which featured the third checkpoint at 2.7km from the line.

Deceuninck-QuickStep dominated the early proceedings, with Rémi Cavagna and Kasper Asgreen setting the quickest times of the early runners. Cavagna set off first but caught Asgreen, his 1:30 man, and blitzed the two checkpoints, becoming the first man to break the hour barrier with a time of 57:54. Asgreen crossed the line second fastest at 1:00:25.

Twenty minutes later, Alessandro De Marchi (CCC Team) came just one second away from breaking the hour mark, while UAE Team Emirates climber David De La Cruz was the second man to do so, setting a time of 17:40 up the climb to go second at 58:35.

Double-stage winner Søren Kragh Andersen (Team Sunweb) and Max Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) both went well, setting times of 59:54, but Cavagna's mark stood strong as the top 20 on GC began their efforts.

Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) was the first man to beat Cavagna, almost three hours later. The Belgian all-rounder put in a time of 57:26 – including a new fastest time of 16:52 up the climb – to edge out the Frenchman by 28 seconds. Bahrain McLaren's Damiano Caruso put in an impressive ride, too, going third fastest at 58:24, as he overhauled Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) for 10th overall.

His teammate, former world time trial champion Tom Dumoulin, was flying on course, fastest at the second and third checkpoints, 51 and 27 seconds up on Van Aert, respectively. He crossed the line with a time of 57:16, 10 seconds up.

In the battle for the Tour's final podium spot, Miguel Ángel López (Astana Pro Team) was 41 seconds behind Trek-Segafredo's Richie Porte at the first checkpoint. A few minutes later, Roglič passed through, shedding 13 seconds to Pogačar.

Roglič lost more time at the second checkpoint, passing through 36 seconds down. At the top of the climb, the time for Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) was only fourth fastest up the mountain, a fatal blow in his bid to retain the polka dot jersey against the two Slovenians.

After a less than ideal bike change on the climb 5.2km from the top (Pogačar changed 500 metres earlier) Roglič got underway again, a 20-second gap in the virtual GC to Pogačar, but over the early kilometres of the climb he looked to totally crumble, with the time gap ticking down from green into the red.

López was experiencing something similar, losing 2:34 to Porte at the second checkpoint and lost another 1:41 on the climb to fall down to sixth overall, as the Australian grabbed his first-ever Tour podium. Mikel Landa (Bahrain McLaren), who finished 14th at 59:22, and Enric Mas (Movistar), ninth at 58:40, were also beneficiaries of López's poor ride, moving up to fourth and fifth overall respectively, while Dumoulin's second-place finish at 57:16 saw him take sixth.

Meanwhile, at the final checkpoint 2.7km from the finish, Roglič passed the ailing López, but was a mammoth 1:22 down on Pogačar. By that point, any hope that he had been saving energy on the flat had evaporated, and all that remained was the final slog to the finish, his chances in tatters.

Pogačar had blitzed the course, putting time into every major GC rider, bar Dumoulin on the flat, before blowing them away on the climb. The stage victory, and the 2020 Tour de France, is his.
