Don’t Judge Tyler Hubbard by His Florida Georgia Line Days

  • By Joseph Hudak

Joseph Hudak

Ten years ago this week, Tyler Hubbard barreled into a Brazilian steakhouse inside the Hard Rock Hotel in Cancun, Mexico, dropped himself into a chair at a dinner table, and did his best to appear sober.

It didn’t work.

I was there to do an interview for Country Weekly magazine (RIP) with Hubbard and his Florida Georgia Line bandmate Brian Kelley , but a long day’s video shoot for what Hubbard says was FGL’s most expensive video ever, “Get Your Shine On,” and too many post-shoot drinks left the singer, then only 25, far from interview-ready. His handlers shooed him out of the room, forced him to eat something, and commanded he go for a walk around the property. Florida Georgia Line had a beachside show to play in a few hours for hotel VIPs and Hubbard had to deliver. Somehow, he did.

That Hubbard is far different from the one sitting across from me on this January morning in Nashville. Dressed in a blaze-orange Filson hat and a camo pullover, Hubbard is now 35, clear-eyed, and speaks with a measured thoughtfulness. He’s also a solo artist who dropped his self-titled debut album this week, putting a capstone on his time with Florida Georgia Line and introducing himself to country music fans under his own name.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

“I’d be naïve to say it had nothing to do with differences of opinion and difference of geographic location and nothing to do with social media, but the decision would have been the same, regardless,” Hubbard says. “BK came to me and said this is what I’m doing. He initiated the solo thing and asked for my support. I told BK I want you to do what you need to do to make you happy, and I’ll figure out what I’m doing after that…. But I wasn’t willing to continue making FGL records and go sign another FGL deal if we were going to do solo stuff. I didn’t have the capacity for both.”

With Kelley committed to a solo career , the die had been cast: Florida Georgia Line would be dissolving, amicably. Hubbard thought he’d focus on songwriting and maybe “hop on a song” as a featured artist, like he did with “Undivided,” the ode to unity he wrote for Tim McGraw and performed during President Biden’s inauguration TV special. But the decision to keep the impending breakup of FGL a secret rubbed him wrong and helped feed the gossipy drama that consumed the duo’s final act.

Florida Georgia Line Explain Why They Can't Bro/Won't Bro Like They Used to Bro

Pour out the fireball: florida georgia line's nashville bar has closed, is brian kelley's new song a 'middle finger' to former florida georgia line bandmate tyler hubbard.

Eventually, Hubbard says he felt the same call of a solo career as his former bandmate and set about reinventing himself. A little over a month after Florida Georgia Line’s last concert, he was onstage at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena opening Keith Urban’s The Speed of Now Tour. It was a far cry from the headlining shows that Hubbard played with Kelley: There were no catwalks, no pyro, no trampolines, no onstage Fireball shots. Instead, Hubbard and his band squeezed in around Urban’s draped-off gear, trying to make a connection with an audience who maybe kinda sorta recognized the guy onstage, even if they didn’t yet know solo cuts like “I’m the Only One” or “Everybody Needs a Bar.” Watching Hubbard work to win over the crowd was to witness an exercise in humility — something not often used to describe FGL at the height of their fame.

“When I came out onstage, it was humbling,” Hubbard says. “There were people at the Keith shows who were connecting the dots during the show. I’d watch it firsthand. The first three or four songs, I was seeing some people going, ‘Where do I know this guy from?’ It was a reminder that it may be a year or even longer until all the lights have turned on for everyone.”

But then he’d play “Cruise” and an arena-wide revelation occurred, followed quickly by his first solo Number One, “5 Foot 9,” a song Hubbard wrote about his wife of nearly eight years, Hayley, with Chase McGill and Jaren Johnston.

“I had zero responsibilities and not much to lose,” Hubbard admits. “But I’ve done personal work, emotional work, mental work, spiritual work.”

When Johnston’s father passed last year, Hubbard — who, at just 20, watched his own father die in a helicopter crash in their backyard — was there to console him and keep him afloat.

“Tyler would leave me messages, saying he loved me and was thinking about me, and that shit goes a long way,” Johnston says. “Because most people, when they know a friend or acquaintance in the music business who is grieving, run away from that. That’s the last thing people want to get involved with.”

Sixteen years later, the loss of Hubbard’s father remains fresh, but he chooses to use the lingering grief as inspiration. “In a way, I am thankful for the perspective I’ve been given,” he says. He pays tribute to his dad in the new song “Miss My Daddy,” a shockingly vulnerable portrait of a man who, halfway into his thirties, still vividly mourns his father’s absence. ( Hearing him sing , “I just miss my daddy, I just miss my dad,” will wreck you.) It’s the type of hyper-personal song that Hubbard might not have written while in Florida Georgia Line.

“They were writing ‘Cruise’ and ‘Round Here’ and all these hits, but there wasn’t as much heart as in what he’s writing these days,” Johnston, a frequent co-writer, says. “He’s thinking about it more and he cares more.”

“It’s still up and running and nothing has changed there,” Hubbard says. “I guess it’s a piece of history now. But I’m proud of it — and we still sell a lot of cheeseburgers.”

Florida Georgia Line are an American country music duo formed in Nashville, Tennessee in 2010. The individual members Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley, hail from Ormond Beach, Florida, and Monroe, Georgia, respectively.

It’s certainly no surprise to note that Florida Georgia Line can trace their actual origins as a band to Nashville, Tennessee - it is, after all, pretty much the world capital of country music - but there’s two things that lend them something of a unique flavor; one is their youth, with both members still in their twenties, and the other is the fact that they both grew up in the south-east corner of the country - hence the name. Alongside the likes of Josh Thompson, Corey Smith and Gary Allan, amongst others, Hubbard and Kelley are helping to spearhead a new, fresh-faced movement in a genre of music often viewed as stuffy and the preserve of the older generation.

Their December 2012 debut record, “Here’s to the Good Times”, fizzed with the vigor of youth, especially on singles like “Cruise” and “Get Your Shine On”; if anything, that was perhaps the case to an unwelcome degree, given that they eschewed the possibility of bringing in an experienced country producer. Follow-up album Anything Goes, though - released in October 2014 - has helped to cement their reputation for doing things on their own terms, with Nickelback collaborator Joey Moi brought in on production duties on an album that topped the Billboard charts.

Live reviews

Florida Georgia Line was awesome and if I ever have the opportunity to see them again, I'm definitely going. They made their grand entrance on This Is How We Roll and things only get better from there. In addition to sounding good, they also had one of the best stage setups I've ever seen, from the pyrotechnics to the lighting and the things they showed on the big screen while they were performing. At one point, they even did Snippets of the Backstreet Boys' Rock Your Body and Montell Jordan's This Is How We Do It, along with House of Pain's Jump Around. From that and their songs, you can tell that they have a variety of musical influences, which is most likely why their music appeals to such a wide variety of people and this event was sold out. In fact, they set the record for the highest attendance for the year at the Hollywood Casino and it was packed, so packed that it took me 45 minutes to get from my car to my seat. But even with that, the crowd wasn't out of control or extremely rowdy, which was a miracle seeing how long it took most people to get in and how many people were in attendance. So yes, I will definitely see them again

I saw Florida Georgia line at a show they were putting on in my town. Like a lot of people, I’ve been a fan of theirs since I discovered the song Cruise. Once I heard that song, I got deeper in to their music and have become quite a fan of theirs.

When they took the stage the crowd went nuts and that set the tone for the rest of the show. They played for just over an hour and the vibe of the crowd was great from start to finish. They played their best known song for the crowd, which everyone loved but they also played some of their lesser known stuff which was nice. It opened my eyes to some of their other stuff. They performed This Is How We Roll, Dayum Baby, they also played a cover of Locked Out of Heaven by Bruno Mars. They did an amazing job with it to, I was surprised.

I was a casual fan of theirs before the concert, but since I have seen them live, my appreciation for their music has skyrocketed. I can’t wait for them to put on another show close to me, I will definitely be going.

I will start of by saying, that Florida Georgia Line have outgrown the role as an "opening act". It's time for them to become headliners. People in the music industry often talk about "paying your dues", well in my opinion, these 2 men have. This was my 3rd time seeing them live, and to watch the grow and own the show is nothing short of amazing. The electricity they bring to the stage is off the hook, the wild dancing, jumping insane heights, I'm sure it's safe to say everybody in the audience felt every jolt. Their music's lyrics hits a special note that anybody can relate too. At one point during the show Tyler, admittedly said the crowd was so loud, he forgot the words to the song, it's amazing how few simple words made the place erupt in cheer again. Special moments of thanking the fans for making FGL who they are today was a nice closing touch to the show. I look forward to seeing them again and again... And again.

This was my first country music event and I have to say, FGL did not disappoint. They built up anticipation nicely and they had boundless energy on stage which, in my opinion, would be tough to do after so many venues/concerts and being on the road 9 months out of the year. They really involved the crowd with their lyrics and they ramped up their show just by the amount of energy they had. They also had great synergy on stage; they may sing, or they may play guitar, or hey - they might do both. If you love their songs but don't know them by heart, no worries. They've got you covered. They utilize a very impressive 'song video' that has all the lyrics showing up on the big screen in a very creative way. But don't make the same mistake I did: you'll want to be in the general audience/mosh pit when these guys come around. I had regular sit- down seats and I felt like I missed out on a bigger experience.

This band is the most feel good, fun loving, happy, down home, just loving life group we have ever been to. Everyone needs to experience the joy they bring to our world!!! You can't leave them feeling sad or down because they pick you up and make everything cool. The southern rock, rap, country feel good mix is perfect for any night!! They also make you feel like a friend. When you love what you do and send it out to everyone around its a gift. We go to concerts to play and revive after a tough world of work and stress. Florida Georgia Line should be on the top of the list for that. LOVE THEM❤❤❤

Well I love FGL. The disappointment was not hearing them sing. It was good just not what we expected. The advertisement for the show on Songkick listed them in the lineup. However, once we purchased tickets through Eventbrite, FGL was only listed as host. I felt a bit deceived. Show did NOT start at 6 and was over before 8. We did enjoy the other artists and FGL came out and sang with Morgan Wallen at the end of the show.

Florida georgia line ‘may we all’ musical announces 2022 dates.

Florida Georgia Line ‘May We All’ musical announces 2022 dates

Musical features a country music guest artist at every show

Florida Georgia Line’s Brian Kelley and his production company CuzBro Productions, in partnership with Lively McCabe Entertainment, welcome the highly-anticipated country musical, May We All, to Tennessee Performing Arts Center in Nashville. Making its world premiere engagement on June 7-July 17, 2022, tickets for the performances go on sale to the general public Friday (Oct 29th) at 10 am CT via TPAC.org , by phone at 615-782-4040, or at the TPAC Box Office at 505 Deaderick Street, Nashville, TN. For groups of 10 or more, call 615-782-4060.

Adding to the excitement of this can’t-miss multi-week event is the rotating lineup of country music guest artists who will step into the role of Bailey Stone. The star-studded roster expected to perform includes Alana Springsteen, Alexandra Kay, Breland, Brian Kelley, Canaan Smith, Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Chris Ruediger, Cooper Alan, Danielle Bradbery, Jamie O’Neal, Lainey Wilson, Lindsay Ell, LoCash, Nick Fradiani, Scarlett Burke, Thomas Mac, Tigirlily, Trent Harmon, and many more.

“I’ve been dreaming and scheming on a musical for a while now, and for May We All to debut in Nashville next June is so surreal. It wouldn’t be a Country music party without some special guests and surprises,” shares Kelley. “I’m thrilled to welcome my friends and fellow artists to the cast, and can’t wait to see what each one brings to the character of Bailey Stone.”

“From the very beginning, we created the role of Bailey Stone to be played by a different guest artist at every performance in Nashville,” adds Executive producer Michael Barra. “We’re already blown away by the caliber of talent and are looking forward to making these special guest moments fun for both the artist and the audience.”

Kelley will appear on SiriusXM’s The Highway live Tuesday (Oct 26)th morning to talk all things May We All with host Storme Warren. The musical is the story of Jenna Coates, a small-town girl whose big-city singing career is over before it even begins, and how she returns to the people and the places of her past to find a path to the future. But going home is never easy. A lot has changed in Harmony, TN, since Jenna left and not necessarily for the better. If Jenna and her hometown are going to dig themselves out of their current crises, they’re going to need each other. And they’re going to need music.

Complementing the storyline, May We All features a must-hear score of fan-favorites from Brooks & Dunn, Chris Stapleton, Dolly Parton, Florida Georgia Line, Jessica Andrews, Johnny Cash, Kacey Musgraves, Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney, Little Big Town, LOCASH, Loretta Lynn, Miranda Lambert, Old Dominion, Sara Evans, Tim McGraw, The Chicks, and more. Debuting exclusively as part of the musical are two original songs co-written by FGL’s Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard.

Lively McCabe Entertainment and CuzBro Productions developed the stage musical in partnership with BMG. The previously announced developmental production of May We All at Playhouse on the Square in Memphis, TN, will proceed in January 2022.

May We All features a book by Troy Britton Johnson, Todd Johnson, and Eric Pfeffinger, with arrangements and orchestrations by Brian Usifer, and is directed by Shelley Butler.

Earlier this year, the producers also confirmed that a film adaptation is in the works, directed by Andy Fickman ( She’s the Man, Parental Guidance ). Information on the production, cast, and creative team is coming soon.

ABOUT RUSSELL DICKERSON : Multi-platinum Nashville-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Russell Dickerson has established himself a prolific songwriter and powerhouse showman through memorable high-energy performances and eloquent songcraft spiked with spirit. His gold-certified full-length debut album,  Yours , bowed at #5 on the  Billboard  Top Country Albums Chart and #1 on the Emerging Artists Chart. Ultimately, it yielded three consecutive #1 smashes, including the double-platinum “Yours” (christened  “one of the hottest wedding songs of the year”   by  The Knot ), platinum “Blue Tacoma,” and platinum “Every Little Thing.” Nominations piled in from the Academy of Country Music Awards, CMT Music Awards, and iHeartRadio Music Awards. Among his 2020 highlights, he received an ACM nod in the category of  “Best New Male Artist of the Year.”   He has electrified audiences on tour with Thomas Rhett, Florida Georgia Line, Darius Rucker, Lady A and Kane Brown, in addition to headlining sold out venues everywhere. Sustaining a fervent following on social media (fondly referred to as his “RD Fam”), he launched his YouTube show,  “This Is Russ,”  taking fans deeper into his world. In 2020, he released his second full-length album,  Southern Symphony  [Triple Tigers], a long-awaited masterful compilation, layered with hummable country anthems and pop flare. Led by the platinum-certified #1 single “Love You Like I Used To,” which spent a record-breaking 21 weeks on Billboard Country Airplay’s Top 10, his sophomore release tells his story like never before. The record’s eloquent songcraft and airtight playing showcases all sides of his beloved personality and the evolution of Russell Dickerson— doting husband, self-proclaimed “regular dude,” rad dad, and bonafide country music superstar.

ABOUT LAUREN ALAINA : Multi-Platinum-selling country star Lauren Alaina’s current EP  Getting Over Him  features Lauren’s signature powerhouse vocals across six tracks the star describes as “Empowering. This music feels resilient, more confident, bold and more secure.” Called “stunning,” “feisty and clever,” and “emboldened,”  Getting Over Him  follows Lauren’s celebrated  Getting Good   EP. Having written all of the tracks across the two projects, both EPs reflect the star’s willingness to dig deep and showcase life’s highest of highs and lowest of lows. The very personal collection also includes Lauren’s latest radio hit, the “deliciously good, sultry duet,”  Getting Over Him  title track featuring Jon Pardi.

The pair of EPs follow Lauren’s critically acclaimed sophomore album,  Road Less Traveled , which landed on multiple “Best Of” lists including  Billboard ,  Rolling Stone  and  Amazon , and it became the top-streamed female country album release of 2017. Praised as “full of life lessons and uplift” (PEOPLE) including Lauren’s first No. 1 smash, “Road Less Traveled,” “Doin’ Fine,” and the inspiring, “Three.”

The “sassy Southerner with killer pipes” (PARADE) has shared the stage with superstars including Alan Jackson, Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, Martina McBride, Jason Aldean and Blake Shelton, and she sold out her own, first-ever headlining,  That Girl Was Me Tour .

Lauren has received multiple nominations for ACM Awards, CMA Awards, CMT Music Awards, Teen Choice Awards, Radio Disney Awards and  Billboard  Music Awards. Awards include 2017 ACM New Female Vocalist of the Year, CMT Breakthrough Video of the Year for her “Road Less Traveled,” and CMT Collaborative Video of the Year for “What Ifs,” the 6x Platinum-selling No. 1 hit with childhood friend Kane Brown.

ABOUT REDFERRIN : The buzz around Warner Music Nashville and Round Here Records’ country artist  Redferrin  is impossible to ignore as one of Nashville’s most unorthodox and innovative new singer/songwriters. His major label debut, “ Red In My Last Name ,” is full of adrenaline-pumping energy and rebellious swagger, serving as a manifesto for his take-it-or-leave-it style. The track is just a sample of the kaleidoscopic musical textures Redferrin can create, aiming to become a sonic mirror held up to today’s rural culture, which he has also reflected in recent releases “Wouldn’t Hurt” and “Stuck.” Born Blake Redferrin, the White House, Tennessee native spent his first 24 years on the pegs of a dirt bike, now harnessing that thrill-seeking spirit and relentless drive for a new kind of sound. He already boasts several successful cuts, including Florida Georgia Line’s hip-hop inspired “Countryside,” Nelly’s recent smash “Lil Bit,” and Dean Brody and The Reklaws’ “I Can’t Help Myself,” which showcased a knack for party starting, hitting No. 1 in Canada and setting a record for the most one-week radio spins in the nation’s history. Redferrin is set to release more new music this year as he continues chasing high-speed dreams with the throttle pinned and no kill switch.

ABOUT OLD CAMP : Old Camp Peach Pecan Whiskey is a smooth whiskey created by country duo Florida Georgia Line as the ultimate start to any party. Tyler Hubbard Says Florida Georgia Line Breakup Was Brian Kelley’s Idea: ‘It Was Really Unexpected’

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley initially shocked fans when they announced their band was breaking up in early 2022.

Years later, Tyler, 37, shockingly explained that the split was largely Brian’s idea.

"For me, it was really unexpected. But BK came to me and said, 'Man, I'm really feeling like I want to do a solo thing. And I'm like, 'Really?' We were just getting out of our first deal. We were kind of in a sweet spot that we had worked for 10 years to get to," Tyler said during an appearance on Barstool Sports' “Bussin' With the Boys” podcast on Tuesday, May 9.

"I'm like, 'Why don't we ride this thing out for like five more years, 10 more years, and then we can do the solo thing or whatever.' But again, like, I wanted to support him,” he added. “He was adamant, like, 'Nah, now's my time. I really need to do this for myself.' And I'm like, 'Well, hey, whatever you need to do, bro. Like, what do you want from me?' He's like, 'I just want support.'"

Tyler and Brian, 38, took the stage for a final time as Florida Georgia Line in September 2022.

"This is our last official concert as Florida Georgia Line," Tyler told the crowd during the concert. "Let's see what we got left in the tank."

While both of the performers have been focusing on their solo careers in recent years, Tyler is not opposed to reuniting with Brian to collaborate in the future.

"Like, we've had an incredible ride. This is where it's going to go. Like, let's do it and crush it, and you never know. Maybe it'll bring us back together and we can have a reunion tour or whatever," he shared. "But he definitely initiated the whole thing from the beginning and it kind of – when I say caught me off guard, it wasn't like we had never mentioned it before – it was just one of those things where I didn't think it was going to happen then, you know what I mean?"

While previously discussing his musical split from Brian, Tyler admitted that it was a huge adjustment to work solo after working in a duo for so long.

"This was sort of a surprise. This was a career shift, and a big transition for me – going from being in a duo, Florida Georgia Line, to now stepping into this new season of being a solo artist," Tyler told Entertainment Tonight in January 2023. "And what that looks like and feels like, it's been really exciting. But it was definitely unexpected and something that BK came to me and wanted to do. And it took me a minute to kind of process that. And I thought, 'Well, I'll just be a songwriter, and I won't do the artist thing.'"

Tyler Hubbard Says 'Unexpected' FGL Breakup Wasn't Initiated by Him While Brian Kelley Claims It's 'Not a Beef Thing'

Both members shared their sides of the story during separate appearances on the 'Bussin' with the Boys' podcast this week,

Weiss Eubanks/NBCUniversal via Getty; Shane Anthony Sinclair/Getty

  • Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley have different takes on what ended their country duo Florida Georgia Line
  • Each musician is moving on with the release of their second solo albums: Hubbard's Strong in April and Kelley's Tennessee Truth in May
  • They each appeared — separately — on the Bussin’ with the Boys podcast this week

Tyler Hubbard claims that Florida Georgia Line disbanding wasn’t entirely his decision but more of Brian Kelley ’s call — while Kelley has his own take on the matter.

The former duo each joined the Bussin’ with the Boys podcast this week, Hubbard, 37, on Tuesday, May 7 , and Kelley, 38, on Thursday, May 9 , to shed some light on the disintegration of their country duo with hosts Will Compton and Taylor Lewan.

“For me, it was really unexpected. But BK came to me and said, ‘Man, I’m really feeling like I want to do a solo thing. And I’m like, ‘Really?’ We were just getting out of our first deal. We were kind of in a sweet spot that we had worked for 10 years to get to,” Hubbard shared on Tuesday. “I’m like, ‘Why don’t we ride this thing out for like five more years, 10 more years, and then we can do the solo thing or whatever?'"

“But again, like, I wanted to support him. He was adamant, like, ‘Nah, now’s my time. I really need to do this for myself.’ And I’m like, ‘Well, hey, whatever you need to do, bro. Like, what do you want from me?’ He’s like, ‘I just want support.’ So I’m like, OK you got it,” said Hubbard, adding how he threw out the idea that one day down the line they could “do a reunion tour.'”

Sam Morris/Getty

“He definitely initiated the whole thing from the beginning,” explained Hubbard. “When I say caught me off-guard, it wasn’t that we had never mentioned it before. It’s just I didn’t think it was going to happen then.”

As Hubbard continued the interview, he confessed to Compton and Lewan that the duo’s separation felt like a “divorce,” explaining, “BK had this thing where he wanted to still do Florida Georgia Line, but he wanted to do the solo thing, too, and I had to tell him … I can’t do both.”

This led to Hubbard asking his partner to decided between Florida Georgia Line or pursuing separate solo paths, noting how he didn’t have the “capacity to do two careers.”

During Kelley’s Thursday interview, he immediately said their division isnt “really a beef situation.” He then explained that he wanted to continue with their duo but use his “off time” to work on his own songs to “honor [his] artistry,” noting he “had voiced that for a long time.”

“It wasn’t a surprise because the marker was once the deal was up,” explained Kelley. “I had an idea that once the deal was up, Tyler would get a solo deal under the same label, I would get a record deal and we would renegotiate a new record deal.”

Kelley said that he had brought up the idea to perform lengthy three-hour concerts, with no openers, that would include Florida Georgia Line songs as well as space for each of them to perform solo music.

“It wasn’t just that I had to have a solo career — I would word it as ‘I want a solo outlet, as a creative, as a songwriter.’ I wanted to reshape that part of the story. It gets sticky about what things go where? I think it’s easy to figure out. It’s not an emotional thing for me when we’re talking about business and creativity.”

Kelley then shared the two decided to wait to pursue solo music until they released their fifth album and their recording contract ended. But then Hubbard joined Tim McGraw for a single, “Undivided,” in January 2021 , which they performed at President Biden's inauguration concert later that month. Kelley shared how he was “surprised [and] shocked,” adding  “I didn’t think that was a good look, if I’d have done it or if he had done it.”

But by June 2021, when Kelley’s album Sunshine State of Mind came out, the duo was done, explaining how he and Hubbard spoke about it after the fact. As a result, the pair canceled their upcoming tour and separated, until their final performance more than a year later.

Florida Georgia Line played their last show together in September 2022 after 12 years as a duo. Along with the ongoing debates about their solo careers, the concert came amid a rumored brief politically tinged spat on social media in 2020. Both men addressed the issue during their respective interviews and refuted how their differing opinions during the 2020 election were not a part of their separation.

Hubbard explained how they “didn’t talk about [politics] very candidly from the beginning. So it allowed a lot of that, like, people to make up stories in this manner,” noting how adding politics into it made it an easy target.”

Kelley added that Hubbard and his wife, Hayley, unfollowed him and his wife Brittney on social media after the election, but their political differences then began “framing that” as the core cause of contention.

Brian Kelley poses for a portrait outside his cabin Wednesday, April 17, 2024, in Nashville, Tenn.

Primary Content

Allow Brian Kelley to reintroduce himself.

Best known as one-half of the country super-duo Florida Georgia Line, Kelley will release a solo album, Tennessee Truth , on Friday. It is a collection of 12 anthemic country songs ripe for a road trip and tailgate in equal measure.

For Tennessee Truth , produced by Dann Huff, Kelley says he aimed to "dive into the music I grew up on — obviously the music I love and themes of just country living, rural living, hard work, good times, outdoors, love," he told The Associated Press from his home in Nashville.

Good songwriting, Kelley says, is a lot like fishing — you need patience. "I wrote probably over 100 songs for this record."

Eight of the 12 songs on the album were written by Kelley, and he worked with whomever he could on others, trying to get outside his comfort zone. "Every song gets you to the next song," he says.

"I think it's a fun record," he says, adding that the creative process was dependent on these tracks translating live.

Geography still plays a prominent role in the music Kelley makes. Throughout Tennessee Truth  are beaches in Florida, farms in Nashville, his wife's family farm in Georgia. Hunting, sitting on the porch drinking sweet tea and eating peanuts, conversations with loved ones — that's the kind of life he hopes comes across on the album. "Just being free," he says.

Fans looking for more coastal country from Kelley — like what was found on his pandemic album, Sunshine State of Mind , released in 2020 — will want to skip over to "10 O'Clock On The Dock."

"It was a passion project," he says of Sunshine State of Mind . "It was supposed to just be its own little thing."

Kelley says he also made that record with the thought that he would record solo and with Florida Georgia Line. "I made it with a sonic respect to what we were, what we had done and what we had built. So, I didn't want to tread on anything even close to that, out of respect, you know?"

He says he considers Tennessee Truth  his true solo debut.

In 2022, Florida Georgia Line embarked on an indefinite hiatus. At that point, the duo of Kelley and Tyler Hubbard had been together more than a decade, and whether you were a fan of their bro country sound or not, their music ( "Cruise," "Meant to Be," "Round Here") set the tone for a generation of country fans. The following year, Hubbard released a self-titled debut solo record.

"I'm thankful that (Brian) had the courage to step into this new space and to make that decision that ultimately kind of pushed me to make the same decision and lead me to where I'm at now," Hubbard told AP at the time. "I had quite a few people tell me that it couldn't be done and that I should definitely continue with FGL, and it sort of lit a spark in me, a fire."

The closing song on Tennessee Truth  is the feisty "Kiss My Boots," which features Kelley delivering vinegary lyrics like: "Want the world to know that you did me wrong / I don't know how you act sweet, after how you did me / Here's a middle finger to you through a song." Some fans theorize it is a direct message to Hubbard.

"I've read some of that, too," Kelley says, adding that he understands people might make associations in order to find meaning in the song.

"But at the end of the day," he says, the song means a lot of different things for his collaborators, "And it really means a lot of different things for me.

"I really put that song out because I wanted people to know that I'm a real human, and I'm not just some face on social media or some somebody that's had some success," he adds. "You know, I've been through hard times in my life."

But could there be a reunion on the horizon?

"The old saying is, 'Tell God your plans and he'll laugh,'" he says. "So, I have no idea. I really don't know what the future holds. I know that I'm really focused on what I'm doing now, and I'm really proud of ... the work that I put in."
