Indonesia in December

where to visit indonesia in december

December falls during the wet season, which lasts between October and April. Usually rain falls in downpours, which allows the travelers to explore the cities in between those. However, it’s also possible to rain for days. Generally it’s not a problem to travel in Indonesia during this time of the year , the muddy roads aren’t exactly in good shape for getting around the country.

Just remember that the peak of the wet season “shifts” with the month. From December to February, it is usually impossible to get to Nusa Tenggara, as the rough seas cancel the ferries. Also the northern part of Sumatra gets heavier rains until January. In Bali, the wet season makes almost no difference when it comes to traveling.

Some sample temperatures:

Jakarta avg high 30C / avg low 23C Bandung avg high 27C / avg low 19C Manado avg high 28C / avg low 23C Medan avg high 29C / avg low 23C Semarang avg high 30C / avg low 25C

Flights and accommodation in Indonesia in October

Although December falls during the wet season , it’s also a peak travel time mostly in Bali and Java. So expect hotel prices to spike during Christmas. The same is valid for airfare to Indonesia . Make sure to book your ticket in advance. Although the prices tend to be higher, due to the many low cost carriers serving Indonesia, flying here during December won’t burn a whole in your pocket.

Pay attention to the region you visit and the particularities of the weather there. You wouldn’t want to deal with muddy roads while trekking on a volcano or exploring a forest, would you? Instead, head to the beach! There are plenty to choose from, so you won’t need to stay on the most popular ones. Pack a picnic basket and head to a secluded beach for some fun with your loved one.

December is still a a good time to explore the cities. For example, in Jakarta, make sure to visit the Beautiful Indonesia Miniature Park. If caught by a rain shower, just go to a museum. Another option is spending the time in one of the Shopping Malls. You can look for bargains or you can try your bowling skills.

Regardless of which area of Indonesia you plan to head to, you must try the local food and yes, it also includes the durian. If you are not brave enough, just stick to the flavorful dishes.

Of course you can see a Komodo dragon in the Zoo, but how about search for them in the wild? Head to the Komodo and Rinca islands but make sure not to get too close to them as their bite can be lethal.

For nature lovers, the Komodo National Park is one of the most famous places in Indonesia to catch a glimpse of the Komodo Dragon. Also part of this national park is the Gili Islands, rich in marine life, including endangered dugongs and blue whales.

Add Tana Toraja to your bucket list if you want to discover and engage with Indonesia’s fascinating traditional cultures. This isolated region of Indonesia, also known as the “Land of Heavenly Kings," is a mysterious location tucked away behind the towering mountains and jagged cliffs of Sulawesi Island.

Indonesia is an exciting and unique destination to add to your travel bucket list. Though the weather will not always be on your side if you visit Indonesia in December, you will get to enjoy the country’s sights and attractions with fewer tourists around. Plus, you might also get good deals on airfare and accommodation.

The Pros and Cons of Visiting Bali in December

With its idyllic beaches, lush jungles, and vibrant culture, Bali is an ideal destination for travelers looking for a unique and memorable experience. December is one of the most popular times to visit the Indonesian island, with many travelers taking advantage of the balmy temperatures, stunning landscapes, and vibrant festivals. But is December really the best time to visit Bali? Let’s explore the pros and cons of visiting Bali in December.

The main reason why many people choose to travel to Bali in December is because of the great weather. This is the dry season, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 33°C during the day and pleasant cool evenings. December is also the start of the high season, so you can expect a wide range of activities and attractions to be available throughout the island. From surfing, to snorkeling, to exploring the lush jungles and picturesque temples, there is something for everyone to enjoy. There are also many unique festivals and celebrations that occur throughout the month, such as the Bali Arts Festival and the Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence.

Cheap flights with cashback

Unfortunately, the high season also means that there can be an influx of tourists during this time, which can make it harder to find accommodation and make it more expensive. Additionally, while the weather is generally pleasant, it is also the rainy season and you can expect a few days of heavy rain throughout the month. Finally, it is important to note that December can be a very busy time for the local Balinese people, as they are preparing for the New Year celebrations. This can make it harder to find locals to interact with and it is important to be respectful of their traditions.

Overall, December can be a great time to visit Bali, with its stunning weather and abundance of activities. However, it is important to keep in mind that it is also a busy time for the locals, so it is important to be respectful of their traditions. Additionally, it is important to plan ahead and be prepared for the possibility of a few days of rain. With the right preparation and respect, December can be an amazing and unforgettable experience.

When to go to Indonesia

When is the best time to visit Indonesia?

With the westernmost point a full 3200 miles from the eastern most tip, so it should come as no surprise that summarising the weather in Indonesia is not straightforward. The tables below split the ‘country’ (made up of 17,508 islands) into two regions - the western & central islands and the eastern islands (that sit to the east of the Wallace Line), however we encourage you to read the more detailed summaries below as there can be significant variations in conditions between the islands within each group.

For the western and central Indonesian islands (such as Bali, Java, the Gilis, Lombok and Komodo), the best time to visit Indonesia is during dry season which spans from May to September and this is the most popular time to visit the country. The wet season is between October & April , with rainfall occurring in short, heavy bursts.

However, the eastern islands such as Sulawesi , West Papua, Raja Ampat and the Moluccas Islands drum to a different beat and mostly peak between March and May and again in October.

Temperatures remain fairly constant year round with averages of 28°C throughout the region.

Indonesia weather & when to go

Pick a month below, west and central islands, eastern islands.

Weather seasons are becoming less predictable but peak visitor months remain more certain.

Unfollow the herd - avoid the peak months to enjoy fewer crowds, better availability, often lusher countryside and help to spread the economic benefits of tourism.

Weather overview

Weather in Indonesia can be split into two seasons - wet and dry - with warm tropical temperatures averaging 28°C during the day, throughout the year. In most regions, the dry season spans from May to September, with the rains falling between October and April.

There are some regional exceptions. On Sumatra it rains from October to January in the north, and November to February in the south. Sulawesi , with its unusual shape, also experiences slightly different weather patterns and rainfall can be expected in the northern regions of the island during June and July.

Generally speaking, the best time of year to visit Indonesia is between May and September when the days are dry and sunny. However, during wet season temperatures remain high and rainfall comes in the form of intense tropical downpours that tend to last for a couple of hours and needn’t spoil your trip.

In some regions the difference between the two seasons is not extreme: Bali and Kalimantan , for example, are relatively unaffected by the season change, but the contrast typically grows as you travel further east into the Nusa Tenggara region (to the islands of Lombok, Flores and beyond) where there is a greater chance of flooding during the wet season and droughts in the dry.

It really depends on your travel plans: muddy back roads can be a problem during wet season if you intend to explore more off the beaten track locations and rough seas can render some islands inaccessible to smaller boats. The best months for diving off the coast of Bali , Lombok or the Komodo National Park are April to September , with rough seas particularly in January & February. If you plan to climb one of Indonesia's many volcanoes, such as Mt Bromo or Mt Rinjani, then dry season is recommended. Expect the temperature to cool as you climb, and pack some warmer layers.

Bali ’s dry season spans from April to September, with days characterised by blue skies and sunshine. The months of May, June and September are arguably the best time to visit, when the weather conditions are idyllic but visitor numbers are not at their highest, meaning the popular beach resorts of Jimbaran, Sanur and Seminyak are not too crowded.

Bali’s wet season falls between October and March, but we're talking brief tropical rainfall rather than days of monsoonal downpours. Temperatures in Bali are fairly consistent year round, ranging from 26°C - 29°C, although the central regions around Ubud and the mountains, such as Mt Batur, experience cooler temperatures and higher rainfall than the coastal regions.

The best time of year to visit the island of Java is during dry season which spans from May to September, when days are hot, dry and sunny. These months are also an ideal time to travel if you are planning on climbing the mountains of Bromo or Ijen.

Rainy season in Java runs from November to March, although East Java experiences less rainfall than the western regions. Days are characterised by regular, intense rain showers that tend to last for a couple of hours.

Temperatures are consistently warm year round, with average daily temperatures hovering around 28-30°C, although temperatures are cooler in the higher mountainous regions such as Mt Bromo, especially at night.

Nusa Tenggara

Lombok, flores, komodo national park, sumba.

The islands of Nusa Tenggara, including Lombok & the Gilis , Flores & Sumba , typically experience dry season between April and September with plenty of sunshine and blue skies. These months are an ideal time to travel if you are planning to climb Mt Rinjani or dive off the coast of Lombok, the Gili islands and in the Komodo National Park. Wet season falls between October and March, with November, December and January seeing the most rainfall.

Like the neighbouring island of Bali, the average temperature is fairly consistent year round across the Nusa Tenggara islands, ranging from 27-29°C.

Sumatra is a fairly large island, split by the equator and weather conditions vary slightly across the island. Medan and North Sumatra experiences a more tropical climate with the possibility of rain showers year round, especially in the jungle-clad areas such as Bukit Lawang. The heaviest rainfall in the north is typically between October and January. Palembang and South Sumatra experiences a more definite split between wet and dry season, with drier weather typically occurring between April and October and rainfall from November to March. Average temperatures hover around 27-28°C throughout the year, although highs of 33-34°C are not uncommon during the drier, summer months.

Kalimantan is a large island and weather conditions vary slightly across the island, with the southern regions being the driest and the rainforest-covered interior predictably the wettest.

The island experiences a light rainy season from March to May, with heavier rains falling between November and January. However, overall the rains on Kalimantan tend to be lower than neighbouring parts of Indonesia, such as the island of Java. Dry season spans from June until September, with August and September being the driest months of the year. Orang-utans can be spotted in the Tanjung Puting National Park throughout the year, although during rainy season they tend to be more elusive, preferring to shelter.

The temperature ranges from a warm 23°C at night to a hot 33°C during the day, with the hottest months typically May and August.

Sulawesi , with its peculiar shape, experiences different weather conditions depending on where you are on the island. In Toraja and the southern part of the island monsoon rains fall between November & April; whilst the city of Manado and the northern regions experience rainfall year round, with the driest months between July & October. Temperature-wise it can get very stuffy on the coast, with highs of 34°C, dropping to a positively brisk 24°C in the hills of central Sulawesi.

The Moluccas

Weather conditions across the central Molucca islands of Ambon and Seram differ from the rest of Indonesia. Between the months of June and September these islands experience rainfall and are best visited between the months of October and May. Weather patterns across the southern Molucca islands of Kei, Aru and Tanimbar, and the northern islands of Ternate, Tidore and Halmahera are similar to the majority of Indonesia. These islands are best visited between the months of May and September.

West Papua & Raja Ampat

West Papua and the islands of Raja Ampat can be visited year-round; there isn’t really an off-season. The region experiences reliably consistent daily temperatures. In Raja Ampat daily temperatures average between 30°C and 34°C throughout the year and rarely drop below 10°C at night. The ocean is warm year-round too. In the highlands of Wamena and the Baliem Valley, at an altitude of 2000m+ above sea level, temperatures are cooler and average between 20°C and 25°C throughout the year. A drop below 10°C at night in the Baliem Valley can be expected.  Rainy season across the islands of Raja Ampat rather confusingly differs from the rest of Indonesia. Between the months of June and September there is a higher chance of rainfall and strong winds can be expected: not ideal conditions for boat journeys or diving. In the Baliem Valley, at altitude, showers can be expected year-round, with the wettest months of the year being May and June. However, rainfall in the region typically comes in the form of brief, heavy downpours as opposed to all-day monsoonal rain.

The Best Places to Visit in Bali in December

December is not a month for visiting Bali's islands, doing most watersports (Nusa Dua is an exception), or for adventurous outdoor activities. It is not good for island hopping, diving, snorkeling, or volcano climbing. If you really want to do those things, consider Thailand in December , which (apart from Ko Samui and the east coast) has ideal dry-season weather.

Make the most of the sunny times, but avoid getting caught out by tropical downpours, strong ocean currents, and rough seas. Here are some of the most suitable places for you to go during your visit to Bali in December.

Get to know the best times to visit Bali >>>

1. Nusa Dua for the Best Rainy Season Beach

Most beaches on Bali suffer from murky waters and rubbish being washed up during the rainy season. Not so Nusa Dua. It still enjoys clear water in December and is Bali's go-to beach in the wet season . Nusa Dua is popular with families and other vacationers, especially over the Christmas period. Book early!

Though watersports may not be offered or suitable when the storms come and the sea is rough, they can still be enjoyed for the major part of the wet season, which is sunny and hot. Nusa Dua is known as a great place for luxury resorts, honeymoons, family holidays, restaurants, shopping, and surfing .

Check the sample itineraries of Bali for 10 days .

2. Experience Balinese Culture and Cuisine in Ubud

If it looks like it will be a rainy day, Ubud — the cultural capital of Bali — is still somewhere you could go. (Bear in mind it hardly ever rains all day .) Go to Ubud Royal Palace to see the island's royal family treasures within charming architecture and gardens, and see Balinese dance performances. Visit its art market for souvenirs from silk scarves and lightweight shirts to statues and kites.

Ubud is the best place to find a Balinese chef , who would take you to a local market for fresh ingredients, then give expert guidance in making Balinese cuisine. Cooking and eating some tasty creations would be a great wet-day activity.

3. Visit Ubud Monkey Forest for a Rainforest Nature Encounter

Ubud's closest natural attraction is also known as Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary . Only 20 minutes' walk from the cultural center, you can find yourself in a world of jungle , temples , and long-tailed macaques . It's a great mini trip for photographers, delighted kids, and nature lovers that can always be slotted in between the downpours.

4. View Tegallalang's Reflective Rice Terraces

Another attraction that is only a short distance (within half an hour) from Ubud is the island's second-most popular rice terraces at Tegallalang . December could be a good month to visit, as Tegallalang's tiered paddies fill up with rain water, creating a steep valley vista of mirror-like fields — some of the best scenery of the year. Catch them when the sun is shining for great photos.

The only December drawback for terraced field exploration is that paths become muddy after rain. The World Heritage rice terraces at Jatiluwih are usually very visitable too in December, but the roads out from Ubud may be affected by mudslides making the 2-hour journey longer/undoable.

Both Extremes of Crowding and Costs

There is some pleasant weather to be enjoyed in Bali in December, but it is definitely a rain-affected off-season month with corresponding price reductions, apart from around Christmas, which is one of the most popular times of the year.

Go early in the month for lower costs and visitor numbers . Go late in the month for the festive atmosphere, but book early .

Pack light, cool, quick-drying clothing . An umbrella will be handy to provide shelter from showers and sun. Sandals and cool, breathable footwear are generally recommended.

Bring some light longer clothing to cover arms and legs for Bali's Hindu temples and religious sites, which will also help to protect you from the sun and mosquitoes.

UV levels will be high (when it's not cloudy), so pack plenty of sun cream, a sunhat, and good sunglasses . Insect/mosquito repellent may be required, especially in evenings and rural areas.

For hiking on rural (hillside terrace) paths comfortable walking shoes with a good grip in the wet/mud are recommended.

If trekking is a priority, it's best to avoid the wettest months of the year when many volcano hikes are closed. The weather patterns make the dry season ideal for hiking, biking, and bathing in waterfalls.

However, temperatures remain high during the rainy season and rainfall is limited to short downpours. So it remains a great time to visit Indonesia — particularly if you want to visit temples and museums.

Arguably, when deciding when to go to Indonesia, the best time to visit is May, June and September . These are the shoulder months of the dry season. You’ll get clear days but you'll find the islands have fewer tourists and are less expensive.

Planning tip: If you prefer a quieter and more affordable trip , consider traveling during the shoulder seasons of April to May or September to November, when the weather is still good, but the crowds are thinner, and prices are more reasonable.

The weather in Indonesia varies depending on the region and season, but it generally experiences high temperatures and humidity levels throughout the year.

Weather in Indonesia in January

January is one of the wettest months in Indonesia, with heavy rainfall and high humidity. The weather conditions during this time can make outdoor activities like trekking and volcano hikes difficult.

Weather in Indonesia in February

February is still very much a part of the wet season. That said, the rainfall begins to decrease, and the weather becomes more temperate. Temperatures remain warm, with average highs of around 30 degrees Celsius.

Weather in Indonesia in March

In March, the rainfall begins to decrease, and the weather becomes more temperate. Temperatures remain warm, with average highs of around 30 degrees Celsius. However, the weather can still be unpredictable, and there may be occasional showers.

Nyepi, the Balinese New Year, kicks off at the end of March or beginning of April, which is a great local experience.

Weather in Indonesia in April

April sees the start of the transition period between the wet and dry seasons.

The tail end of the rainy season is the best time of the year to visit Indonesia for natural beauty. At this time, the jungle and rice fields are at their most lush, while rain showers are increasingly few and far between.

Weather in Indonesia in May

May marks the end of the wet season in Indonesia, and the country begins to experience a dry spell. Temperatures can soar during this period, particularly in urban areas, but the humidity levels are generally lower than during the wet season.

May is an ideal time for outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and exploring the countryside. This is also a prime month for diving off the coast of Bali , Lombok and Komodo National Park .

Weather in Indonesia in June

The weather in June is generally pleasant with low humidity. In June you'll find favourable weather conditions — with blue skies, sunny days, and little rain. June is the time of the most consistent surf, especially in Java and Bali.

Culture-seekers may like to time their visit with the Bali Arts Festival, which runs from June through to mid-July.

Weather in Indonesia in July

Indonesia in July is marked by warm and sunny weather. However, temperatures can soar, particularly in urban areas, and visitors should take precautions to protect themselves from the sun and heat. July marks the start of the peak season.

Weather in Indonesia in August

August is the busiest month across most of Indonesia’s tourist hot spots, and you'll find there are beach parties and festivals galore. The weather makes it a great time to visit Indonesia. However, this is also a time of high season prices.

Weather in Indonesia in September

September is one of the best months to visit Indonesia — when the summer chaos has dissipated. Still dry and sunny, it’s a great time for land-based activities.

September is when one can catch the Erau Festival Tenggarong — a fantastic display of indigenous Dayak skills and dancing.

Weather in Indonesia in October

In October, the weather in Indonesia begins to cool slightly, with more moderate temperatures (average temperature of 27°C) and lower humidity levels. This is the perfect month for exploring the many cultural attractions that the country has to offer — including ancient temples, museums, and traditional villages.

October is also when the Krakatau Festival Lampung takes place — five days of events highlighting Lampung’s cultural heritage.

Weather in Indonesia in November

November is known as the shoulder season and is the best time to visit Indonesia. This is the transition month between the dry and wet seasons, with increasing rainfall and cooler temperatures. However, the weather can still be pleasant for outdoor activities.

In November, one can time their visit with the Kora Kora Festival. This is a great way to experience traditional longboat races in the Maluku Islands .

Weather in Indonesia in December

Generally speaking, Christmas and New Year are extremely busy and expensive. December is one of the wetter months and can be a time of heavy downpours and humidity. However, the festive season is the best time to visit Indonesia for raucous parties.

Many visit Indonesia for the Kasada Bromo. During this celebration, 0fferings are made to the gods and thrown into the crater.

Indonesia's peak season typically falls between June and August, coinciding with the dry season when the weather is sunny and pleasant. This is the most popular time to visit Indonesia, particularly for beach and outdoor enthusiasts who want to enjoy activities such as surfing, diving, and island hopping.

During the peak season, tourist hotspots such as Bali, Lombok, and the Gili Islands can become quite crowded and accommodation prices tend to be higher than during the rest of the year. It's advisable to book in advance to secure your preferred travel dates and avoid disappointment.

If you prefer a quieter and more affordable trip, consider traveling during the shoulder seasons of April to May or September to November, when the weather is still good, but the crowds are thinner, and prices are more reasonable

Indonesia's wet season typically lasts from October to May and is characterized by high humidity and heavy rainfall, particularly in December and January.

It is easy to find good deals when visiting Indonesia in the low season. From October to April, you can travel with little advance booking and low prices. Despite frequent downpours, temperatures hover around 30 degrees, and a big plus is that the islands are less crowded and cheaper.

Indonesia's dry season typically lasts from May to October and is a busy time for tourism. The weather is characterized by sunny and dry weather, with low levels of rainfall and warm temperatures. Average highs range from 28-32 degrees Celsius in most parts of the country.

It is not a good idea to visit Indonesia during peak tourist season (between July and mid-September). This is when prices soar and rooms can be fully booked for weeks on end.

Best time to visit Bali

The best time to visit Bali is during the dry season, which runs from April to Septembe r. During this time, the weather is sunny and dry, making it perfect for outdoor activities such as sunbathing, swimming, and hiking. The peak season in Bali falls between July and August, when the island can get crowded and prices may be higher.

However, if you visit Bali during the shoulder season (April to June or September to November), you can still enjoy good weather and fewer crowds.

The wet season in Bali runs from October to March, and while it may be cheaper to travel during this time, heavy rain can disrupt travel plans and limit outdoor activities.

Best time to visit Java

The optimal period to explore Java is from April to September when the dry season prevails. During this period, the climate is generally sunny and arid, ideal for engaging in outdoor endeavors such as hiking and sightseeing.

It's worth noting that the high season in Java falls between June and August, which means the island can get quite crowded and prices may be higher. The shoulder season in Java occurs from May to June or September to November, while the wet season runs from October to April. During the wet season, heavy rainfall may hinder travel plans and limit opportunities for outdoor activities.

Best time to visit Lombok

For the best experience, it is recommended to visit Lombok between April to September during the dry season. The weather is usually sunny and dry, making it ideal for outdoor activities like swimming, surfing, and snorkeling. July and August, is peak season which can lead to overcrowding and higher prices.

Nevertheless, if you plan to visit Lombok during the shoulder season, which spans from May to June or September to November, you can still enjoy pleasant weather conditions and avoid large crowds.

Where is hot in December? Our top 13 destinations

By Sarah James

Where is hot in December 13 top places to visit in December

As the cold takes firm hold of Europe , sun seeking generally requires a longer flight. True, there are spots closer to home with the good grace to linger around 20°C, but winter provides an excellent excuse for a far-flung getaway, when a powerful and prolonged dose of vitamin D is practically prescribed. Hot cities in Africa and Australia will come alive this month, as their summers finally arrive, while tropical islands and unsung corners of the world will hit their peak. See below for our edit of where is hot in December. For more travel inspiration, see our guide to the best winter sun destinations and the best holiday destinations in December .

Average December temperature : 26°C

The seven hour-flight from London to Dubai can just about be classed as medium-haul, while the time difference between the two is a jet-lag-free four hours – but this desert city in the Middle East feels worlds away from chilly England in December. Sure, there’s the glitzy side of Dubai – its mega-malls and skyscraping hotels are decked out in festive lights and ginormous trees for the season – but there’s a more laidback side to the city, too. Life’n One is a hidden yoga retreat for those hoping to end the year on a healthy note, while cultural hub Alserkal Avenue is a great place to escape the heat in arthouse cinemas and indie galleries.

Where to stay: Forget the glitz and glam, this cool new un-Dubai hotel is 25hours Hotel One Central , a hub for creatives, digital nomads, and those in the know. If you're here to venture to the pool and nothing more, Anantara World Islands Dubai Resort is a great option, especially for families. For a stay that’s unlike anything else in Dubai, book a room at the secluded five-room hotel and spa Al Faya Lodge an hour east of the city. See our edit of the best hotels in Dubai for more.

Lanzarote, Canary Islands

Average December temperature : 21°C

We called it ‘the surprisingly cool Canary island ’, but we weren’t talking about the weather. The fact that Lanzarote resides off Africa’s west coast means that even in December it’s still fairly sane to take a dip. Avoid the package hordes and head to fine, white-sand Papagayo Beach on the southern tip of the island, or try world-class surfing in north-west Famara. In fact, more surprises lie in store the further you stray from the tourist hotels. There’s the Jardín de Cactus in Guatiza, a surreal succulent amphitheatre; or starkly alluring Timanfaya National Park, a volcanic wilderness that starred in 1966 film One Million Years BC. And don’t forget Finca Malvasia , a seductive ranch-like retreat in the central wine region, owned by a pair of designers who swapped London for island life. After wintering in Lanzarote, you might just join them.

Where to stay: La Cabaña , a slick and earthy villa with a quote-mark-shaped swimming pool and views down to Puerto Calero. For more, check out our list of the best villas in Lanzarote .

Bali, Indonesia

Average December temperature : 27°C

It’s one of South-east Asia ’s winter-sun kingpins for good reason – tropical Bali ’s lush rainforest and white-sand beaches tick all the boxes when it comes to a warm-weather escape. Once-scrappy beach town Canggu draws Indonesia 's thriving digital-nomad crowd, along with blissed-out surfers, while artists’ village Ubud is a hub for those seeking a more spiritual getaway.

Where to stay: Teetering on a high clifftop overlooking the Indian Ocean on Bali’s southern coast, Six Senses Uluwatu is a wellness retreat that gets it just right. In Canggu, we like The Slow , a 12-room bolthole with an achingly cool cocktail of art, music and interior design. Riverside jungle hideout Capella Ubud feels like an African tented camp from the 19th century and makes an ideal base that avoids any desert-island clichés. If you're travelling in a group, Bali has some incredible villas and Airbnbs, like Laputa Villa which sleeps four and is widely known as "The Bamboo Castle in the Sky." For more, see our pick of the best Bali hotels .

Marrakech, Morocco

Average December temperature : 20°C

When winter is in full flow, don’t underestimate the power of a three-and-a-half-hour flight to another world. Yes, Marrakech is hectic, but a recent influx of design hotels – most of them reimagining glorious, red-brick riads – means there’s always somewhere more sedate to escape to. Alternatively, take up residence in a palace: La Mamounia , a grande dame of landscaped gardens, fountains, opulent tiles and velvets, is a card-carrying member of our best hotels in the world Gold List . Or book a stay at Royal Mansour , the city's most lavish hotel, which proves you needn’t plunge into the medina madness outside to get the best of Marrakech.

Where to stay: As we mentioned above there are no shortage of hotels in Marrakech . For a traditional riad stay, Riad Goloboy is a feast for the eyes (and Instagram) with kaleidoscopic walls and a gallery-worthy art collection.

Average December temperature : 24°C

The city’s year-round warm weather comes into its own in December, when the beach parties continue while other sun spots – we’re looking at you, California – pull on a sweater. For a calmer vibe, try the less-developed northern end of Miami Beach. It’s here that chef Thomas Keller serves elegant classics (oysters, steak tartare, lobster thermidor) at the landmark The Surf Club, among potted palms and white-coated waiters who evoke the spot’s history as the go-to of the 1950s jet set. Better yet, the recently extended, hacienda-style Four Seasons is here (Elizabeth Taylor and Wallis Simpson count among former guests). Refined might not be the word typically associated with Miami, but let this breath of fresh air change your mind.

Where to stay: Miami Beach Edition sits inside the skeleton of the Seville, one of the giant 1950s hotels, with nods to the past, a connection to the city's heritage and a bar with uninterrupted ocean views.

Bahamas, Caribbean

It’s peak season in the Bahamas , and while that will certainly keep the beaches busy, it also means perfect weather. Our tip: strike out for Harbour Island, a three-mile-long, mile-and-a-half-wide sliver of sensational, pink-sand stretches, where there are always enough sunbeds to go around. Make camp at its smartest hotel, Bahama House , a chic cottage with retro Palm Beach vibes, a sunken tiki bar and just 11 rooms. It’s part of Eleven Experience, an experiential-travel specialist, you can also take advantage of custom adventures such as diving in secret grottoes or swimming with swines on Pig Beach.

Where to stay: Pelican Bay Hotel . Inside, waterside rooms combine Caribbean cheerfulness with classic European style. Outside, white-sand beaches, lush boulevards and beautiful seascapes.

Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town is always a good idea, but particularly in December, when the fledgling South African summer sets beaches and vineyards aglow. The mere sight of beautiful crowds bronzing against its theatrical, cragged mountain backdrop will banish the winter blues in one blow. And just when you thought the Mother City’s raw good looks, smart art and design scenes and world-class food couldn’t get more appealing, it only goes and adds a pair of super-hot hotels, too.

Where to stay: The Silo , which is ingeniously set inside a former grain elevator house at the top of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa on the Victoria and Albert Waterfront. Also on our Gold List, Ellerman House is an imposing Edwardian mansion with smashing views of the Atlantic and one of the country’s finest private-art collections.

Auckland, New Zealand

Average December temperature : 22°C

Just like that low-and-slow New Zealand drawl, Auckland is a big, beautiful city that’s seldom in a hurry. Perhaps that’s what happens when there’s nature everywhere – rainforest-covered hills here; the glittering Hauraki Gulf there. And the notion that the affable country is somehow behind the times is rebuffed by the likes of the Britomart complex, a series of waterfront heritage buildings turned boutiques and restaurants, and Iko Iko, a fabulous concept store with fans such as Emilia Wickstead. Add in a ferry trip to nearby Waiheke Island’s sandy beaches and vineyard wine tastings and be totally converted to the Kiwi lifestyle.

Where to stay: Hilton Auckland is über-trendy retro futurism in a gleaming wharf shed redeveloped to resemble a cruise-liner.

Merida, Yucatan Peninsula

Average December temperature : 31°C

Tulum , Cancún and Playa del Carmen are the seaside giants of the Yucatán in south-east Mexico , but head instead for the state capital of Mérida for the best of everything: Mayan ruins, a charming colonial town, dense jungle and – if you don’t mind a short drive – beaches, too. Best of all, there’s Chablé just outside the city, an astonishingly lush estate with a spa and private cenote, a restaurant led by renowned chef Jorge Vallejo, a tequila ‘library’, a sweat lodge and a local shaman. Plus it has 40 splashy, limestone-and-glass casitas, each one with its own terrace and pool.

Where to stay: Hacienda Xcanatun for marble mosaic and coral stone floors on the verandahs, exteriors are daubed in terracotta and cream, and rough-hewn rustic tables and hammocks hung between trees that give this 18th-century Italianate estate a lived-in feel.

Koh Samui, Thailand

Long the Shangri-La of feverish backpacker dreams, Koh Samui has grown up. Yes, its raison d’être remains pure pleasure – in the shade of three million coconut palms, and on its bone-white beaches – but the packaging is more Four Seasons, less ratty bungalow. Wellness has well and truly arrived here, with yoga studios, health retreats and even monk-led mentoring for those looking to make a real change. If, however, you just want a proper, idyllic tropical break, Panacea takes the cake. The former home of one of the world’s top hedge-fund managers, this sprawling hilltop estate features five enormous residences, 82ft swimming pools, a cinema, a nightclub – and even a Muay Thai boxing ring (tattooed instructor included).

Where to stay: Set high on a hill, Panacea has a mix of four-, five- or six-bedroom villas filled with tropical hardwoods, silk fabrics and petrified wood that’s over a million years old, plus there's a kids’ room, a private cinema, gambling den and nightclub. At COMO Point Yamu a 100-metre long white-tiled swimming pool shoots out towards the Andaman Sea. Tip-top service, zingy cuisine and a wondrous spa has made this Thai hotel a favourite with LGBTQ+ Thais and travellers.

No doubt, Havana is spectacular. But leaving Cuba ’s main drawcard to explore its steamy eastern mountains will bring you closer to a country that, in its isolation from modernity, has much to teach. In Baracoa, the mystical hangs like a heavy mist. The city, surrounded by the Cuchillas del Toa mountain range, is a world unto itself: streets infused with music, sleepy beaches and rivers and canyons where – yes, even here – you’ll stumble upon the odd thatched bar. At the very south of the island, Santiago de Cuba, with its palatial Spanish buildings by the sea, is set to be the next It destination, but for now remains thrillingly tourist-free.

Where to stay: Casa de Miriam y Sinai is a fantastic first-floor flat that is an oasis of calm and space, with three spacious rooms, one with a street-side balcony, are spotless and have top-drawer bathrooms.

Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne ’s erratic climate ensures it’ll never hold the beachy appeal of Sydney . But December’s summer temperatures are ideal for exploring the city’s beloved laneways: narrow passages packed with street art , galleries, restaurants and bars. It’s here that trends are set rather than followed; where a cup of coffee has both a caffeine kick and global acclaim. And in Australia ’s always dynamic second city, there’s never a shortage of new and miraculous places to explore. Currently it’s Di Stasio Città, Spring Street’s Brutalist Italian restaurant, where guests eat fabulous crab capellini in a concrete-bunker-like setting as video installations play across the walls.

Where to stay: Lindenderry at Red Hill , a silver-birch-lined drive leading to a white rural hideout, with comforting, pared-back style and a restaurant that uses the with best local produce.

Volcan Arenal dominates the landscape during sunset as seen from the Monteverde area Costa Rica.

Average December temperature : 30°C

There's a lot to love about Costa Rica. The awe-inspiring nature – two coastlines, Caribbean and Pacific, which have not only distinct landscapes but distinct vibes; rainforests; volcanoes; powerful waterfalls that crash into rivers. You can surf, raft or relax in natural hot springs, spot sloths, monkeys and thousands of species of birdlife. All of this, plus Costa Rica is consistently named one of the happiest countries in the world, as well as having a higher-than-average life expectancy. December to April are the best times to visit – you can expect dry, sunny days, perfect for exploring on your own terms.

Where to stay: Aguas Claras in Puerto Viejo, on the Caribbean coast has six cabanas and a handful of restaurants loved by locals. See our edit of the best Costa Rica hotels for more ideas.

Best Time to Visit

The Best Time to Visit Sumatra

where to visit indonesia in december

Generally speaking, the best time to visit Sumatra is from May to August, during the peak of dry season. Which part of Sumatra you’re visiting matters, though. Indonesia’s largest island is, well, large, and rainfall varies between North, West, and South Sumatra. But one thing is for certain: You’ll have warm weather while exploring the fascinating Indigenous cultures and rainforests.

No matter where you decide to travel to Sumatra, use this guide for choosing the best time to enjoy your adventure!

Weather in Sumatra

The equator slices neatly through the middle of West Sumatra, keeping heat and humidity high. Expect daytime temperatures ranging from 80 to 90 degrees F, and humidity hovers between 80 and 90 percent. Evenings are more comfortable, with temperatures dipping into the 70s. Unless you’re gaining elevation while climbing one of the many volcanoes or getting drenched while motorbiking around Lake Toba, you probably won’t be chilly in Sumatra.

Heavy rains occur throughout the year to keep the rainforests green and thriving. Downpours are typically shorter and less frequent in the drier summer months between May and September, but you should be ready for them at any time. Read more about monsoon season below.

Big Holidays and Festivals

Chinese New Year causes a surge in visitors to Lake Toba and Samosir Island. Christmas, too, triggers an increase in domestic travel. But even with the holiday spikes in visitors, crowds are nowhere near the volume seen in other popular destinations around Indonesia . Unfortunately, you’ll still pay more for less (and possibly endure rainy weather) if traveling to Lake Toba during Chinese New Year.

Indonesian Independence Day (Hari Merdeka) is on August 17, and causes some short-term transportation delays as colorful processions fill the streets and businesses close. But getting to see the various ethnic groups in full regalia or catch a panjat pinang competition is worth the minor inconvenience.

Best Time for Diving

Sumatra doesn’t appeal to divers as much as Papua and Borneo, but Pulau Weh, located in the Andaman Sea at the top of North Sumatra, offers warm water and excellent dive sites. The best months for diving in Sumatra tend to be June, July, and August when visibility is best and the sea is calmest. Pulau Weh doesn’t really have a predictable whale shark season, but the few seen there are most often spotted in December or January.

The Riau Archipelago between Sumatra and Singapore is another top place to dive in Sumatra. The best months for diving there are from April to September, when winds are calmest.

Best Time for Surfing

June and July are the best time for surfing in Krui, one of Sumatra’s top surfing spots. As expected, these months are also the busiest and a great time to meet fellow surfers.

If you’re lucky enough to be surfing West Sumatra’s Mentawai Islands, the waves run all year long. The surf is milder in winter (December to March), at the end of which size and ferocity of waves increase into the summer. Swells get serious from May to September, reaching their most intimidating heights in July and August. Surfing season in Sumatra conveniently coincides with high season in Bali .

Sumatra's Dry Season

Although dry season (May to August) is overall the best time to visit Sumatra, it’s also the busiest season, with prices for guesthouses at their highest (although they’ll still feel like a bargain when compared to prices in Bali). That said, Sumatra doesn’t really suffer from high-season spikes of tourism like others islands. Even during the peak of dry season, you won’t have to worry much about finding hotel vacancies or domestic flights. Your top-pick guesthouse may be booked up in a popular destination such as Lake Toba, but there will be plenty of rooms available elsewhere.

Don’t let the label “dry season” lull you into thinking your outdoor adventure plans won’t be affected by weather. Downpours during dry season don’t typically last long, but their torrential strength will surprise you! Flash flooding and mudslides can be a threat when hiking around waterfalls and gullies. Always have a quick plan for waterproofing important things whether you’re trekking, driving a scooter, or watching a pacu jawi meet (traditional cow racing).

Monsoon Season in Sumatra

In any given year, the monsoon season’s start and finish are unpredictable. The island's long, northwest-southeast orientation causes monsoon season to begin around November in South Sumatra and around October in North Sumatra. As rainy season approaches, the intervals between cloudbursts become shorter and shorter. Sizzling periods of hot sun between showers keep humidity levels soaring.

Like elsewhere in Southeast Asia, you can visit Sumatra during the monsoon season for low-season discounts; however, you may not be able to enjoy all the activities you had in mind, as many of the best things to do in Sumatra are outdoors and affected by weather. For example, some of the trails, particularly around volcanoes, become muddy washouts during monsoon season. Instead of meeting fellow hikers out on the trails, you’ll get to meet far more leeches and mosquitoes than preferred. The increase in mosquitoes , consequently, increases the chance of contracting mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue.

Similarly, Sumatra’s jungle rivers may become raging during monsoon season, causing silt and runoff to affect visibility for diving. If you plan to dive during monsoon season, choose sites as far from shore as possible.

Burning Season

Sadly, Sumatra is one of the most deforested places on earth due to unsustainable palm oil practices. The sprawling plantations clear undergrowth by setting illegal fires that burn for months. The amount of greenhouse gas released annually has detrimental global impact. During Sumatra’s burning season, thick haze drifts into Singapore and Malaysia. Airborne particulate matter reaches dangerously unhealthy levels, prompting stay-inside orders in many cities. Despite efforts from governments to stop the fires, burning season is an annual event, with some years worse than others.

Although there is no “official” start to burning season in Sumatra, haze really begins to accumulate in July and September. Air quality is affected in some destinations until the rainy season arrives to clean things up. Travelers with respiratory ailments should check air quality before traveling to Sumatra .

Different Provinces in Sumatra

With Sumatra being so large, when you should plan on traveling depends on which province you're planning to visit. Read on for our guide to the best time to visit Sumatra, broken down by province.

North Sumatra

The best month for visiting North Sumatra is May, when days are clear but visitors are fewer. Although the rest of Sumatra offers plenty of adventure, travelers are drawn to the accessibility of Lake Toba , Bukit Lawang, and Samosir Island —the latter of which often feels noticeably cooler than the rest of Sumatra thanks to fresh breezes blowing steadily across the big caldera lake.

Due to the surge in prices, people, and noise, Chinese New Year is not the best time to visit Lake Toba. Furthermore, strong winds between November and February can turn the one-hour boat from Parapat to Samosir Island into a choppy ride; be prepared if you’re prone to seasickness!

West Sumatra

Padang, the capital of West Sumatra , is one of the rainiest cities in Indonesia. The many rivers around Padang overflow their banks and regularly cause flooding during winter's rainy season. July is an ideal month for visiting West Sumatra, although February can also be surprisingly dry for winter.

Meanwhile, October, November, and December are especially rainy in West Sumatra. With an average of 164 inches of rain, West Sumatra receives over five times the average annual rainfall of the contiguous United States!

South Sumatra

The best months for visiting South Sumatra are during dry season, from June to September. High temperatures increase through September and October, until rainy season arrives in November. December is often the wettest month.

Palembang, the capital of South Sumatra, averages over 103 inches of rain a year. Even with all the rain, Palembang is subject to poor air quality during Sumatra’s burning season. Unhealthy haze caused by illegal fires is often at its worst in July and September.

The best time to visit Sumatra is from May to August, during the peak of the dry season, when the weather is warm enough to explore the fascinating indigenous cultures and the rainforests.

The hottest month in Sumatra is February, with an average high temperature of 89 degrees F (32 degrees C). January is considered the sunniest month.

Sumatra's monsoon season lasts from November through March and can make traveling the island difficult, with sometimes impassable roads.

9 Best Places to Visit in December (WORLDWIDE)

December is one of the most popular months of the year for tourism, and for many countries, this is peak season for travel. This means that choosing from the best places to visit in December can be challenging.

With limited holidays throughout the year, many people, especially families, choose to take their vacations over the Christmas period, or into the New Year, when they can maximize their time and enjoy the festive period.

That makes December a busy time, and you’ll find that popular destinations such as Mexico , or the Caribbean are expensive and bursting with tourists.

Even in cold Europe, with the onset of the ski season, it can be just as busy as the winter sun destinations, and at first glance, it might seem as if there are few quiet spots left for travelers looking to escape the crowds.

But there are still some excellent destinations to consider, and if you’re brave then you can explore the icy realms of the Arctic in winter, or you can endure the rains of Indonesia for a southeast Asian getaway.

If you’re looking to escape the high season crowds, then here are the best places to visit in December!

9 Best Places to Visit in December

Table of Contents

1. Hungary

Chain bridge at night in Budapest, Hungary

Hungary is one of the best places to visit in December if you are looking to travel to Europe because while it can be incredibly cold in Central Europe, the country still comes alive as the festive period begins.

The cold weather keeps many away from Hungary, and while neighboring countries such as Germany or Austria still receive many winter tourists looking to shop at Christmas markets , Hungary has yet to really cash in on the same travel market.

But in Budapest , and in other cities across Hungary, you can find some of the best Christmas markets in Europe, but with far fewer tourists than in other countries.

Hungarians are used to the cold too, and you can warm up in winter with steaming bowls of goulash or a hearty soup that’s laced with Paprika, and in Budapest and Debrecen, there are plenty of museums to visit when the biting winds become too much.

The landscapes look spectacular in the frosty weather, while in Budapest, the best part about winter is getting to really enjoy the city’s iconic thermal baths after a cold day of exploring.

Our Top Recommended Hungary Tours:

  • Hungary Carpathians: Bükk National Park – 8 Days
  • Budapest Getaway – 3 Days
  • Castles and Monasteries of Bakony Mountains – 8 Days

Charles Bridge in Prague

Another great Central European destination, and one of the best places to visit in December to escape the crowds, is Czechia – or the Czech Republic.

Like Hungary, Czechia is often seen as a summer destination, because in winter, it’s bitingly cold. But while Prague suffers from over-tourism in peak season, during the cold of December the crowds are much thinner, and as long as you don’t mind the bad weather, you can really explore the capital on your own terms .

Across Czechia, you’ll also find plenty of Christmas markets too, and ones that can rival those in Germany. Shop for unique Czech souvenirs, and when it gets too cold, warm up with a hot bread bowl overflowing with goulash.

Our Top Recommended Czechia Tours:

  • Enchanting Prague Tour – 7 Days
  • Czech republic ‘The Heart of Europe – 9 Days
  • Hiking through Giant Mountains of Czech Republic – 6 Days

3. Norway

Northern Lights in Norway

Norway might be found far, far north, but in fact, even in the grip of winter, it can be one of the best places to visit in December.

Norway, like much of Scandinavia, experiences long, harsh winters, because of its proximity to the Arctic. In fact, much of the north of the country is firmly within the Arctic Circle, and for much of the winter sees almost perpetual darkness and no sunlight.

It might not seem like such an appealing tourism destination, but actually, it’s a great opportunity to experience Norway’s natural wonders and to experience a unique side of life in the country.

Hiking to Trolltunga is a must while visiting Norway if you have the time and are able.

Brave the cold darkness and you’ll be almost guaranteed to see the Northern Lights in Norway , as soon as you head out of towns and cities. You can enjoy winter sports, and you can ride snowmobiles, or sleds across the Arctic wilderness.

Norway also welcomes tourists with Christmas markets, ice hotels and glamping camps set up under the dark skies.

It’s a challenging time to visit Norway, but for those looking for an adventure, it’s one of the best places to visit in December.

Our Top Recommended Norway Tours:

  • Norway Winter & Northern Lights with G Adventures – 7 Days
  • Explore the Norwegian Fjords with G Adventures – 13 Days
  • Norway Fjord Trekking with G Adventures – 7 Days

4. Japan

Winter in Japan

Japan isn’t necessarily seen as a winter getaway, with most travelers choosing to visit the Asian nation when the weather is hot in summer, or when the colors blossom either in spring or autumn.

Winter is definitely overlooked, but if you are looking to see the country without the crowds, then it’s one of the best places to visit in December.

Japan can be incredibly cold in December, and the further north you go – in Hokkaido for instance – then the colder it’s going to get.

In the north, there’s usually snowfall in December, but when they are covered in sheets of crisp white snow the landscapes look spectacular.

Depending on the level and timing of snowfall, you might find that Japan’s ski resorts are open too, and compared to the packed slopes of North America or Europe, the Japanese ski scene is decidedly quieter.

In the south, it won’t be quite as cold, but you may experience snowfall too. December is a great opportunity to explore the bustling capital, Tokyo, where you can still enjoy all the unique sights and attractions regardless of the weather.

In Kyoto, you can do the same, and you can always slurp down a steaming bowl of Ramen to ward off the cold chill, or warm up with a few glasses of Sake.

Our Top Recommended Japan Tours:

  • Iconic Japan with National Geographic Journeys – 12 Days
  • Epic Japan with G Adventures – 11 Days
  • Discover Japan with G Adventures – 14 Days

5. Australia

Blue Mountains in Australia

On the other end of the spectrum, Australia has some of the best weather in the world in December, and it’s the perfect place to soak up some sun.

It’s one of the best places to visit in December, and while it’s definitely the peak of high season, Australia is such a vast country – an entire continent in itself even and with great cities like Perth , Cairns , Sydney & Queensland – there are many opportunities to get off the beaten track or to find quieter spots.

While the tropical north isn’t the best place to visit due to the heavy rains and potential cyclones, the south and much of the east and west coasts are experiencing their best weather in December.

This is summer, and even on the far south coast, temperatures can reach 40 degrees Celsius.

If you want to have a hot Christmas in the sun, Australia is the place to do it, and you can cook up a BBQ while you look out over the ocean.

The big cities will always be crowded in December, as will much of the popular east coast , but you can easily escape the crowds by visiting lesser-known parts of the country, such as Tasmania, or the west coast.

Our Top Recommended Australia Tours:

  • Brisbane to Cairns Experience with G Adventures – 10 Days
  • Best of Australia with G Adventures – 14 Days

6. Indonesia

Raja Ampat, Indonesia Best places to visit in December

In December, Indonesia is experiencing its rainy season, but that doesn’t mean that it’s off bounds, and it’s still very much a destination you can travel to.

Any time of the year, Bali is the country’s most popular tourist destination, and in December you’ll find it’s still heaving with tourists, despite the frequent rainfall.

The rain can be unpredictable though, and you could find you have perfect weather, or more likely, just short bursts of heavy downpours and then sunshine.

But Indonesia isn’t just about Bali, and there are over 17,000 different islands to visit, and in the off-season, the majority are going to be quiet. Consider visiting Sumatra, or exploring Flores and Komodo Island, if you want an adventure.

Belize- Best places to visit in December

In December, one of the most popular places to visit – especially for North Americans and Europeans searching for winter sun – is southern Mexico and the Caribbean. But, the prices are extortionate, and beaches and resorts are always packed out.

To the south of Cancun though, you can find the much less visited country of Belize, which is easily one of the best places to visit in December.

English-speaking Belize is often overshadowed by its larger Spanish-speaking neighbors, but the Central American country boasts both Mayan ruins and a spectacular Caribbean coastline.

You can find beautiful resorts in locations like Caye Caulker , that will match anything in Mexico, while snorkeling and diving in Belize is superb in December.

You can even head out to see the Blue Hole, the vast, deep sinkhole that’s found off the coast. You can fly over the Blue Hole in light aircraft or helicopters for a birds-eye view, or you can go underwater to explore its depths on scuba diving expeditions.

Although it’s just a short journey from Buenos Aires, the Uruguayan capital Montevideo is much quieter and offers a wonderful culture and an excellent coastline.

Outside the vibrant capital, you can explore Spanish colonial towns, lounge on deserted beaches and get to know this beautiful South American country in December, when the rest of the continent is packed with tourists.

Our Top Recommended Uruguay Tours:

  • Wine and Culture of Uraguay – 7 Days

Budget for your trip to Indonesia with these top tips along with a guide to daily costs © fernanda photos / Shutterstock

With a million rupiah currently equal to around US$65, you’ll be transformed into a millionaire the moment you touch down in Indonesia .

If you choose the simple beach-bumming lifestyle, you should budget to spend around a million rupiah a week. Alternatively, live the high life with some of the most luxurious five-star hotels on the planet at low-season prices that are a fraction of the cost elsewhere.

This guide to daily costs, along with tips on saving money, can help you budget for your visit to Indonesia.

Daily costs

  • Local coffee in a streetside  warung (stall): $1
  • Cappuccino in a fancy cafe: $2.50
  • A hearty plate of fried rice/noodles: $1
  • The same meal in a tourist venue: $4
  • Cocktail at a happy-hour beach bar: $5
  • Beer in a hotel bar: $3
  • Glass of house wine at a resort: $6 (sometimes up to $25!)
  • 1.5L (50oz) bottle of water: $0.25
  • Surfboard rental: $3.50 per session
  • 90-minute yoga class: $10 (less if you get a package price )

1. Take your pick from thousands of islands

Bali  is substantially more expensive than neighboring Java , which is in turn slightly more expensive than Sumatra , but the sheer amount of competition vying for the tourist dollars means you can stay very cheaply. In Bali, two people could spend around $20 a day, including a private room, meals and scooter rental.

In general, as you go further to less touristed islands, the cost of living diminishes. Bear in mind, though, that at the extremes of the world’s greatest island nation – in the Alor archipelago, for example, or in the distant Maluku islands – prices are higher due to the transportation costs of getting goods (and vehicles and fuel) to remote regions.

2. Choose the cheapest time to go

October to April is rainy season in Bali and central Indonesia, and the cheapest season to travel here. Unless you are going far off the beaten track – jungle trekking or volcano climbing, for example – this is often a lovely time to be in Indonesia. The rains are usually short and sharp, and interspersed with blissful sunny days (avoid Christmas school holidays and New Year, though.)

3. Find an inexpensive flight

Sign up to Jack’s Flight Club for prompt updates about cheap flights to Jakarta or Bali. Within Indonesia, national carrier Garuda Indonesia , Air Asia or Lion Air link all the other main islands. For a rough idea of flight prices, you can travel one way between Jakarta and Bali from around $40, or from Bali to Labuan Bajo (for access to Komodo) from around $36.

4. Book the best-value accommodations

You can book in advance, of course, but if every dollar counts, consider booking just the first night or two, because the best deals – in hostel-packed Kuta , for example – are often found by asking around. With private rooms available from as low as $2 in some parts of Indonesia, dorms are rare.

It can often be more cost-effective to rent a long-term bungalow or villa through an apartment rental site than to pay for a nightly hotel room. A good air-conditioned double room in Bali will cost $8 a night (breakfast included), but a self-catering bungalow in the central  Ubud area  with its own garden and kitchen might cost around $6 a night if you book a full month.

5. Car and scooter hire is inexpensive

Public transportation in Indonesia is cheap but erratic, so most travelers opt to rent a vehicle. To keep costs at a minimum, consider renting long-term. Scooters are cheap (often around $2–3 a day if you rent for a week or more), but for the sake of safety and security, consider upgrading to a car, which will set you back around $15 per day – which is especially affordable if you're traveling with friends. With petrol costing less than $0.65 per liter ($0.17 per gallon), self-driving in Indonesia is inexpensive.

Driving in Indonesia – especially in Bali with its swarms of motorbikes – is not for the fainthearted, so if you prefer not to drive yourself, you can hire a car and driver for around $30 per day.

6. Use taxicab apps for local rates

Bluebird Taxis has 23,000 vehicles throughout Indonesia, and while convenient, they can be about twice the price of Grab , the Singapore-based company that acquired Uber in Asia.

Before leaving home, download the apps for Grab and Gojek , which claims to have two million motorbike taxis across Southeast Asia. These options mean you'll only pay local rates for transport, so no haggling every time you need to take a car or motorbike taxi, and no need for complex multilingual conversations trying to confirm destinations or give directions.

7. Ferries, buses and trains are cheap but take a long time

Ferries connect some of the islands, and they're inexpensive, though erratic and time-consuming. Take the trip from Labuan Bajo to Bali, for example: the weekly ferry costs less than $20, but it's a 33-hour ride compared with an hour-long flight.

On larger islands, long-distance buses connect all the main cities, but only on Java and parts of Sumatra can you count on getting around by rail. As a general rule, you can figure that a seat on a train will cost you about $1.50 for each hour of travel, and you can book through Kareta Api Indonesia . A bus ticket is usually slightly cheaper and almost always faster than Indonesian trains.

8. Eat local to eat cheap

While Indonesia lacks the culinary variety of much smaller Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore, you can count on finding hearty local food at affordable prices. Unless you are in a tourist center, you can usually find a single-plate meal – normally nasi goreng (fried rice) or mie goreng (fried noodles) – for less than $1. Because they are cooked on the spot, ingredients are usually fresh and frequently delicious.

The West Sumatran city of Padang has exported its fine gastronomic traditions, and you will find Masakan Padang (literally Padang-style cooking) eateries – typically a buffet where you're given a plate of rice and simply point to whatever extras you fancy – in virtually every town throughout the country. You can often grab a veritable feast for around $2; try to pick establishments that seem to have a constant turnaround of diners.

9. Stay off the booze

The best way to keep costs low in Indonesia is simply to avoid alcohol. A bottle of Bintang, the standard local beer, is about $2, a bottle of "cheap" wine starts at around $10, and a bottle of imported gin or whisky will likely set you back $30 or more. Those are supermarket prices – the figures will likely triple in a trendy bar. If you want to party without breaking the bank, look out for the ubiquitous two-for-one sundowner happy-hour deals.

10. Haggling is part of the culture

Haggling is a way of life in Indonesia, and outside of big, fixed-price malls and supermarkets, you will be expected to haggle for most things. Although many travelers are uncomfortable about bargaining for purchases, you’ll soon find that a smile, a joke and a couple of reliable stock phrases can transform a boring shopping trip into an opportunity to bond with local people. At its best, haggling turns a mere business transaction into something far more human.

"Bukan harga bule"  (not foreigner price) is good for a smile.

"Saya sudah bankrupt"  (I’m already bankrupt) guarantees outright belly laughs.

Remember, though, that your haggling should only be driven toward establishing a fair price that is good for both parties. Some travelers pride themselves on their tough haggling skills, believing that a street vendor will always be making a profit regardless. This is not always true: most store-holders will prefer to sell at a loss if it is the only way that they can feed their family that night.

Vatican delegation arrives in Indonesia to arrange pope’s visit

he Vatican delegation has reportedly arrived in Indonesia to arrange Pope Francis’s first-ever visit to Indonesia next September.

"The Vatican delegation and the committee are currently working with related parties to prepare for the Pope's visit," said Thomas Ulun Ismoyo, the spokesperson for Pope Francis’ visiting committee, as quoted by Tribunnews.

Meanwhile, Indonesian Catholic Bishops' Conference (KWI) secretary general Paskalis Bruno Syukur said the three-day visit from Sept. 3-6 would revolve around the theme of “Faith, Paternity and Compassion”.

“[Pope Francis] prioritizes good relations among humans regardless of ethnicity or religion,” Paskalis stated.

Indonesia itself is home to roughly 242 million Muslims and 29 million Christians; 8.5 million of whom are Catholics, based on a 2022 report by the Religious Affairs Ministry.

Pope Francis will be the third pope to visit Indonesia, after Pope Paul VI in 1970 and Pope John Paul II in 1989. Both were greeted by former president Soeharto.

Before coming to Indonesia, Pope Francis is expected to visit Papua New Guinea and Timor Leste in August.

Since his election by cardinals in 2013, Pope Francis has made 44 trips abroad.

The Asia and Oceania trip has been on the papal agenda for some time, but there have been doubts about whether the 87-year-old pontiff would embark on it given his increasing frailty and a record of skipping engagements because of health problems.

His last international journey was a two-day stay in Marseille, France, in September last year. In November of the same year, he pulled out of a trip to the COP28 climate conference in Dubai because of a lung inflammation.

In recent months, the pope has been suffering on and off from what the Vatican has described as a cold, bronchitis and influenza, and he needs a wheelchair or a cane to move around because of a knee ailment.

Catholics in Indonesia welcomed the Pope’s upcoming visit with glee. They prayed for his health during the last Easter Sunday mass so the plan could be carried out as prepared.

Migrant crossings at U.S.-Mexico border plunge 54% from record highs, internal figures show

By Camilo Montoya-Galvez

Updated on: May 23, 2024 / 7:50 PM EDT / CBS News

El Paso, Texas — Illegal crossings along the U.S.-Mexico border in May are down by more than 50% compared to the record highs reported in December, giving the Biden administration an unexpected reprieve during a time when migration has historically surged, according to internal government data obtained by CBS News.

During the first 21 days of May, U.S. Border Patrol agents recorded a daily average of approximately 3,700 apprehensions of migrants between official ports of entry. That represents a 54% decrease from the 8,000 daily average in December, when illegal entries soared to a quarter of a million, an all-time high.

May is also on track to see the third consecutive month-over-month drop in unlawful border crossings, the preliminary U.S. Department of Homeland Security statistics show. In March and April , illegal crossings along the southern border dropped to 137,000 and 129,000, respectively, according to public government data . If the trend continues, Border Patrol is on pace to record between 110,000 and 120,000 apprehensions in May.

Border Patrol apprehensions don't include the number of migrants processed at official border crossings, where the Biden administration is admitting roughly 1,500 asylum-seekers on a daily basis.

While still elevated compared to pre-pandemic levels, the drop in migration this year has been unusual, bucking the trend in recent years of migrant crossings soaring in the spring. Senior U.S. officials have partially attributed the lower-than-expected levels of unlawful crossings to an aggressive crackdown on U.S.-bound migrants by the Mexican government.

Mayorkas on the border

In an interview with CBS News in El Paso on Thursday, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas also credited Biden administration efforts for the downward trend.

"We have driven down the number of encounters at our southern border rather dramatically," Mayorkas told CBS News.

Mayorkas cited a "number of actions that we have taken, not only strengthening our enforcement, not only attacking the smugglers, but also building lawful pathways that enable people who qualify for relief to reach the United States in a safe, orderly and legal way."

The sustained drop in migrant crossings is welcome news politically for President Biden, who has faced withering criticism from two directions: Republicans and moderate Democrats who believe his immigration agenda is too lenient, and progressives who argue his administration has embraced some Trump-era border policies. Immigration has also emerged as a top concern for American voters ahead of November's presidential election.

Aware of the politics around immigration ahead of his election bid, Mr. Biden is considering an executive order that would attempt to suspend asylum processing along the southern border when illegal crossings spike, three people familiar with the White House's planning told CBS News. Officials are aiming to move forward with the move, which would rely on a broad presidential authority known as 212(f), in June, though the timeframe could shift, the sources said, requesting anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.

While he did not confirm the expected executive action, Mayorkas said he was "not ruling out options."

"We look at options … every day, to see what more we can do to strengthen our border security in keeping with the law and our country's values," Mayorkas said.

Administration officials have frequently urged Congress to reform the U.S. immigration system, warning that any executive action could be held up in court because of legal challenges.

Senate Democrats tried and failed to advance a bipartisan border security bill for a second time on Thursday, calling the vote to highlight Republicans' opposition to the legislation in an attempt to shift public opinion on the issue.

That proposal, which was brokered by the White House and a small bipartisan group of senators earlier this year, would give the president an emergency power to shut down asylum between ports of entry when illegal border crossings soar to certain levels. It would also preserve asylum processing at official ports of entry, and allow migrants who pass their initial asylum interviews to work in the U.S. immediately after being released from federal custody.

Most Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, have rejected the border agreement, portraying it as insufficiently strict.

Mayorkas on Thursday said he was "very disappointed" by the rejection of the border deal.

"I think President Biden said it quite crisply," Mayorkas said. "Some want the problem for political reasons, rather than deliver[ing] the solutions that border security and our country's security needs and the American people deserve."

Filing shows Salesforce paid $419M to buy Spiff in February

The Salesforce building near Bryant Park in New York City

Salespeople live and die by commissions, which typically form a big chunk of how they are paid. It’s no surprise, then, that Salesforce paid a premium to buy a platform that helps its customers manage commissions more easily.

Several months ago, Salesforce bought Spiff to help companies build out and manage incentive-based compensation schemes. Salesforce’s 10-Q filing with the SEC early on Thursday finally revealed the price it paid: $419 million all-in.

That price, described as “acquisition date fair value,” includes $374 million in cash, the filing said.

The 10-Q followed Salesforce’s quarterly results, which it reported on Wednesday. The company’s stock dropped by some 16% on Wednesday after its quarterly revenue came in below analysts’ expectations for the first time in about 18 years (it last reported a revenue miss in 2006). The company recorded quarterly revenues of $9.13 billion, below analysts average estimates of $9.15 billion, per Yahoo Finance .

Given that context, an acquisition to drive more revenues down the line is not a surprise.

The $419 million price tag is a notable hike for Spiff. The startup was last valued, according to PitchBook , at $260 million as recently as May 2023 when it raised $50 million .

That was just seven months before Salesforce and Spiff announced their deal in December 2023. The deal closed in February 2024, according to the 10-Q.

Based out of Salt Lake City, Utah, Spiff had raised around $110 million in total from investors including Salesforce, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Norwest Ventures, and a number of notable backers such as UiPath’s founder Daniel Dines, and Hanno Renner, the head and founder of HR startup Personio.

Spiff’s acquisition and the deal’s value are notable because they are very much a sign of the times.

Such a strong uptick in value close on the heels of a fundraise can be seen as a signal of how stronger companies are still commanding good prices despite wider pressure on startups.

The IPO window is still mostly closed for many mature startups, leading to a tougher funding market overall. And when we combine that with tough economic conditions that have seen companies fail to meet growth targets, we’re seeing struggling startups having to settle for down-rounds , conducting fire sales , and in the worst-case scenarios, sinking in the deadpool .

That’s not the case with Spiff. At the time of its last funding round a year ago, the company said its customer base had doubled to 1,000, and its revenue had risen 100% in the last year. The company was founded during the pandemic, and it says its revenue has increased 800% since then.

More recently, Spiff has been leaning into buzzy areas that Salesforce likely wants to capture: AI, and no-code, self-service solutions.

Specifically, Spiff last year launched an AI-based, no-code, self-service toolset that its customers could use to build sales commission schemes without needing developers. Extra flexibility becomes a priority when the economy is not at its strongest, and that’s where Spiff was aiming its new technology.

“We’ve seen a lot of commission plans change,” Jeron Paul, Spiff’s founder and CEO, told TechCrunch in an interview last year. “Incentives end up driving a lot of the behavior of your go-to-market motion, so when you hit recessions, and whatever we’re in right now, that go-to-market motion changes a lot, which means your commission plans change a lot.”

To that end, Salesforce said it is recording $323 million of goodwill covering “assembled workforce and expanded market opportunities.”

Salesforce also noted in the 10-Q that it is ascribing $52 million in “intangible assets” in the value of the Spiff deal, which includes nine years of life for the startup’s existing technology, and a further five years for its existing customer book.

  • Southeast Asian destinations take top ranks in Mastercard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index 2024

Southeast Asia has once again emerged as the world’s leading Muslim tourist destination in the latest edition of the Mastercard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI), with Indonesia and Malaysia tied for the top spot among 145 destinations in the 2024 study. Meanwhile, Singapore has consistently led among Non-Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC 1 ) destinations for the ninth consecutive year, underscoring its unwavering dedication to cater to Muslim travelers by widespread availability of Halal food, prayer facilities, suitable airport amenities, and Muslim-friendly accommodation.

According to the report, the Muslim travel market is set for a significant uptick this year, with global international arrivals potentially reaching up to 168 million, exceeding pre-pandemic levels by as much as 5 percent. This growth in volume highlights the rising prominence of the segment, driven by demographic and economic expansion, cultural and Halal tourism development, and technological advancements that enable more personalized travel experiences for Muslim travelers, such as apps that locate Halal food outlets, Qibla directions, and prayer timings. The impact of artificial intelligence is also helping further customize travel experiences to simplify travel logistics while adhering to faith traditions.

Retaining their joint top position as the leading OIC 2 destinations for Muslim travelers for the 2 nd consecutive year, Indonesia and Malaysia also scored favorably on ease of entry and quality of tourism infrastructure for both Muslim and non-Muslim travelers.

Thailand maintained its position in the top five non-OIC destinations, owing to efforts towards promoting Halal tourism like increasing Halal food availability, integration of Muslim-friendly amenities at tourist spots, and enhanced accommodation and dining options for Muslim travelers.

Meanwhile, the Philippines recorded an increase in its score on communications compared to 2023. Among non-OIC destinations, the Philippines has steadily increased its appeal to Muslim tourists by strategically developing their Halal Tourism portfolio, enhancing halal accreditation of hotels and restaurants, and conducting Halal awareness orientations. This effort builds on their achievement of winning the Emerging Muslim-friendly Destination of the Year award in last year’s Halal in Travel Global Summit, based on GMTI 2023 results.

GMTI, now in its ninth year, analyzes data across 145 destinations using the ACES framework, built around metrics on Access, Communication, Environment, and Services. Over time, the criteria have evolved to keep pace with the changing needs of Muslim travelers. This year, new metrics on availability of facilities and services for travelers with disabilities were added to the model.

“It is encouraging to see that the travel sectors in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore not only maintained their rankings in this year's GMTI, but also improved their individual scores. This reflects a broader trend of increased consideration for Muslim travelers, with average scores across the Index rising by 10 percent,” said Fazal Bahardeen, Founder & CEO, CrescentRating. Mr. Bahardeen also added: “It is also positive to see the Philippines continue to improve its score, which demonstrates the unwavering commitment of the Department of Tourism to bolstering Muslim-friendly tourism and advancing the destination's appeal. As Muslim travel continues to gain momentum, the GMTI 2024 report provides invaluable insights for stakeholders across the travel and tourism sector to leverage the growing Muslim travel market.”

Safdar Khan, division president, Southeast Asia, Mastercard, said: “According to the latest report from the Mastercard Economics Institute (MEI) ,  travelers from and to Southeast Asia are becoming increasingly focused on getting the best value from their trips to ensure the most unforgettable experiences, a shift echoed in the rapidly growing global Halal tourism industry. At the same time, technology is helping this demographic to travel in ways that meet their unique needs, from AI-powered hyper-personalized experiences to Mastercard’s own enablement of easy and secure cross-border payments. Together this heralds a new level of convenience for Muslim travelers and unlocks a new era of growth and profitability for travel operators. Mastercard’s long-running collaboration with CrescentRating is both a testament to the strength of the partnership and the ongoing importance of understanding and serving Muslim travelers.”

1 Non-OIC countries are those that are not members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. These countries may have significant Muslim populations or cater to Muslim travelers but are not officially part of the OIC.

2 The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is an international organization consisting of 57 member states, which are primarily Muslim-majority countries. The OIC aims to safeguard and protect the interests of the Muslim world in the spirit of promoting international peace and harmony.
