A walking tour of Ras Al Khaimah's old town

Ras Al Khaimah ’s old town is a thin slice of twisting lanes, neon-glow markets, mosques-of-many-sizes and hole-in-the-wall tea shops between the creek and the Arabian Gulf. Locally, it is known for magicians and the retired mariners who called the neighbourhood home. Such is its draw that elders still make the journey from the suburbs to seaside cafes each day to meet old neighbours, play cards and sip tea. Others come from mountain towns to buy short-blade axes from Baluchi smiths or to stock up on heavy gold pendants for dowries. To the outsider, the old town can look too dusty, too higgledy-piggledy and lacking the Orientalist aesthetic of recently restored souks catering to tourists. But if you seek muddled charm, gold bangles, plastic tea-pots, silver swords or some of the country’s greatest snacks, then Old RAK could be your new haunt.

The neighbourhood of Ras Al Khaimah, now known as Old RAK, became the emirate’s trade centre in the mid-1500s when the creek of the medieval metropolis Julfar silted up. Such was its importance that it gave the emirate its name, often erroneously translated as ‘head of the tent’ when, in local dialect, it better translates to ‘headland of the palmy houses’. This walking route takes in the best of Old RAK. The fish market and museum are best in the morning but the old town is at its brightest and busiest in the evening, ideally one hour before sunset prayers or after 8pm. Shops close from about 1pm until 4.30pm and modest dress, with covered legs and shoulders, is appreciated.

Find solace at the old Friday Mosque

Start your walk overlooking the turquoise waters of the Gulf at the Sheikh Mohammed bin Salem Al Qasimi Mosque. You are at the centre of the old town and on the edge of the Al Ali neighbourhood, named for a seafaring family whose ships sailed Indian Ocean trade routes. As families left for modern suburbs, they rented old courtyard houses to low-income workers. Many old residents return to worship at this mosque, particularly in Ramadan, when sheikhs and labourers pray shoulder-to-shoulder. Although not a tourist site, it is open to the public and a rare example of a preserved Emirati mosque built before the oil. A mosque has stood in this place since at least the 1500s and rebuilt several times over the centuries. It was last rebuilt after the British attacks of 1819 and 1820 and today holds hundreds of worshippers in its hall of 60 columns. It was recently restored with traditional plasterwork covering its coral stone and beach rock blocks.

Catch an auction

Walk down the small hill (14A street) to Sheikh Mohammed Bin Salem Street and you’ll find the morning fish market, where the daily catch is auctioned off as fishermen land with their haul. The afternoon fish market is directly across the creek in Al Ma’aridh harbour. Not long ago, people crossed the creek by abra, a small motorised ferry, and ships from Iran and India unloaded cargo onto these docks. Cities on Indian Ocean trade routes, like Basra, Gawdar, Mumbai, Zanzibar and Aden, may appear far flung on maps but were intimately familiar to sailors from this neighbourhood. After the oil boom, migration changed direction and the influence of these port cities on local culture continues in food and music, jewellery and dress, and even henna and tea.

Directly across from the fish market you’ll see Nena Tea . You’ll notice this little cafeteria does not have any tables. Instead, people use the fish market parking lot to order from car windows. And they all come for one thing: karak, a cardamom-spiced milk tea brewed for hours. This is one of many cafeterias in Old RAK that specialises in karak and each competes with secret blends. Nena Tea’s owner, Easa Al Ali, spent two months in the Indian state of Kerala and the city of Hyderabad to create the perfect cup and he identifies three distinct styles of Emirati, Indian and Gulf, with varying levels of cardamom, saffron, sugar and loose leaf tea. His research has clearly paid off: the cafeteria sells about 1,500 cups on a slow day.

Shop for swords

From the fish market, head down Sheikh Mohammed Bin Salem Street to the pearl roundabout. You will pass Iranian grocers, founded when coasts were connected, rather than divided, by the Gulf. On your right, you’ll see a few sword and silversmithing shops. Their customers are mainly from mountain tribes like the Shehhuh and Habus, who dance with the sword and the jerz, a short-bladed axe. Sword throwing is an integral part of mountain weddings. Swords are sold with blunt blades, which helps when balancing sword tips on soft fingers or leaping in the air during mock battles for the mzafin dance. After the sword shops, you’ll pass beauty parlours like Esmet Beauty Salon and Caroleena Henna and Beauty Saloon. They are strictly for women and have served generations of Ras Al Khaimah brides doing make-up, hairstyling and henna.

At the pearl roundabout, turn right onto Al Hisn Road and you’ll see an imposing two-storey fort about 150 metres away. This is the National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah. Before it opened as a museum in 1987, it was the town police station and jail. Before that, it was home to the late ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, Sheikh Saqr Al Qasimi, who moved to a modern palace in the 1960s. Inside the fort, you can duck under small, carved doorways off its palm-shaded courtyard into rooms with archaeological treasures and antique collections donated by the Qawasim ruling family and Ras Al Khaimah residents. The rectangular watchtower is the oldest part of the fort and stood outside of town walls when it was built between the British attacks of 1809 and 1819.

Ras Al Khaimah got its first modern mall in the early 2000s. Before the mall, there was Kuwaiti Street and it remains the place for everything you can’t find at a shopping centre: bundles of miswak tooth-brushing twigs, Vimto bottles of mountain honey and mosque-shaped alarm clocks in pastel hues. Of particular note are perfume shops selling tiny glass vials of Western and Gulf branded perfumes, as well as bakhoor, or oil-doused sandalwood chips, and pure oud, or agarwood chips smoked over coals for a natural, rich scent. The street is colloquially named for a Kuwait -funded hospital and appears as Sidroh Road on Google Maps. From the fort, walk towards the sea on Al Hisn road and turn left at Sidroh Street, keeping parallel to the sea.

After 250 metres, you’ll find a series of gold shops on your right. Although humble compared to Dubai ’s sprawling market, these jewellers offer a formidable selection of 22-karat pieces in Indian, European and traditional Emirati designs. Think thick, spiky bangles, known as ‘father of the thorn’, and heavy pendant necklaces, or hirz, originally styled to hold protective scripts from the Quran. Most pieces are smithed by south-Asian artisans in Dubai and Sharjah workshops. Despite their exquisite craftsmanship, they are sold by the gram. Gold makes a fitting souvenir. In the mid-twentieth century, sailors from this neighbourhood exported gold from the Gulf to India after the collapse of the pearling industry. Now in their eighties, many still swap stories about outwitting authorities by hiding gold in the soles of thick sandals, stuffed inside dates or stowed inside secret pockets in the beams of their dhows.

At the next crossroad, you can turn left onto Al Souk Street to reach the dhow roundabout on the main road of Old Ras Al Khaimah. This is a good place for a taxi. Or, swing right to the women’s section of the souk, where tailors specialise in bright and blingy embroidered gowns and ‘cloak’ shops sell women’s abayas. After 100 metres, you’ll reach the old Corniche. Turn right and in about 20 minutes you’ll be on the beach in front of the mosque where this walk began. On the way, stop for fortification at one of the many seaside cafeterias. Try a towering fruit cocktail from Asayel King Juices, luqaimat dumplings drizzled in date syrup from Sanqini House or saffron cake from 201 Cafe.

Highlights of the Week, May 2

Parent Teacher Conferences

We appreciate the time every parent and teacher took to discuss their students' progress, challenges and successes at PTC last week. In preparation for PTC, Secondary students were also tasked with having student-led conferences with their parents beforehand, with an emphasis on self-evaluation and an ownership of their own growth. Parents meeting with their children's teachers is vital to understanding our students better and providing the support they need. Forwards together. 🤝

Grade 7 field trip: Sharjah Safari

Our grade 7s visited Sharjah Safari, the largest safari in the world outside Africa. It's such a great opportunity to see native African birds, reptiles and mammals. Our students loved seeing elephants, lions, giraffes, rhinos, crocodiles, storks and more in environments similar to their natural environment. Sharjah Safari is host to more than 120 species of animals and up to 50,000 animals, many of them endangered.

🦺 Safety Week

Our seniors have spoken at assembly each morning about various safety topics, giving tips and pointers on how to be safe in our daily lives: 🛣 Road safety, including how and when to cross the road, and how our staff helps with dismissal every day; 🚙 Safety in the car, including wearing your safety belt, not playing in the car, and what to do when you sit in the front of the car; 😁 Personal hygiene, which includes washing your hands, brushing your teeth, how you present yourself regarding your hair and nails; and 📱 Cyber safety, including topics like not sharing personal information with strangers and being SMART about certain websites.
