St. Thomas was just substituted as a port on our upcoming Royal Caribbean cruise next week.  Any ideas for a shore excursion?  We are willing to do independent or ship tours.  We have only visited St. Thomas once a number of years ago, so almost anything would be fine.  With such a short time frame to find and book something, I'm open to any suggestions.  RCI didn't have any of their excursions on the cruise planner yet.

We were there last week and honestly Magen’s Bay totally lives up to the hype. It’s absolutely gorgeous there. And they have natural shade in areas which is important to me.   

If your ship offers an excursion to St John it’s well worth going there as well. Even more beautiful. It’s a hassle to go on your own but it’s possible. 

St. Thomas has a lot to offer - great shopping, beaches and some decent snorkeling.  If you can tell what your interests are you will get better responses.

Actually a self-excursion to STJ is a piece of cake! No more hassle than the cruise line option. In fact a much nicer alternative to a ship excursion IMHO. I can understand having some trepidation as a first-time visitor, but the taxi/ferry service there is very reliable. I would suggest adding the island tour if you go. But your time in port is a huge factor, as you need to allow 2 - 2.5 hours for round trip travel time and buffer time…  

Magens Bay is indeed the most-hyped STT beach by the cruise ship director. But I would look at the number of cruise ships in port as it does attract most first-time visitors. Of course if you are there on a very busy day then any beach offering the amenities you probably want will be busy.

Our beach of choice is Lindqvist (restrooms but no other amenities, sitting on our towels with a lunch from Moe’s Market), or Sapphire Beach where there are more amenities.

Why don’t you share your ship and date in port (or your sail departure date) and you can get some more pertinent recs? A day sail, a nice beach, some history with shopping are just some options…

Not to hijack but has anyone done a private/semi-private/small group boating excursion??  I can't seem to find anything.  Part of the problem is we don't dock till noon (we are there for 8 hours).   Ideally we would visit 3 or 4 spots, do some snorkeling, see some scenery and do some swimming.

Yes it would have to be a private charter to go out that late. There are a few small powerboat operators that take out 4 - 6 ppl max. You can find them on the VINow site. Price was typically ~$600 + fuel but check with them for options.

Ok so yes, a pretty busy port day with 3 ships at Havensight, and your ship and another RCCL ship at Crown… There are the cookie-cutter group tours that typically hit the overlook on , then Mountain Top for shopping and a gorgeous view of Magens Bay and the north shore, and a short stop at a beach (usually Magens). We’ve not used these but others can share their recs.

Another option is just taking a short taxi into town and getting dropped in the historic area. You can see the highlights on your own, then do some shopping, and after have plenty of time to return to the ship and then a short taxi to Lindbergh Bay (aka Emerald Beach). The Emerald Resort has lounges and umbrellas for rent. They may all be taken by then because there are two large ships docked in nearby Crown Bay, but there is a beach bar and a restaurant as well. Brewer’s Bay is another option but fewer amenities there…And Honeymoon Beach on nearby Water Island is a small beach with a food truck, but that will also tend to be very overcrowded…

That is a very long port time! 😄

Most cruisers don’t have nearly that much time in port so snorkeling options are usually limited to STT, Trunk Bay on STJ, or a shared day sail.   

We are not avid snorkelers, but from everything I’ve read the best off-the-beach snorkeling options are Waterlemon, Maho and other areas that are a bit further from Cruz Bay. Trunk is not rated that well, but it is an option.

But because you do have the luxury of finding the best snorkeling for your day I would suggest posing that question on the STJ forum on TripAdvisor. That is an excellent resource for this type question. You can also get recommendations on a taxi driver who will work with you so you have more confidence in going to less-visited areas..

And of course a day sail is another option, there are several independent operators on the VINow site, both private and shared…

W're not sure what to do either. We're there 12-7 and likely will have massages on board in the morning so will probably just hop off for some shopping and lunch. Any specific areas in that shopping district on the North side of the bay worth targeting? Or good lunch suggestions - not a pizza and burger type family?

For lunch in town Gladys’ in Charlotte Amalie is very popular, we like the Green House when we are in town…You could also have a nice (but early) dinner before departing if you don’t do much else?

Charlotte Amalie is on the North side of the bay, Havensight is on the Southeast side. I was referring to the shopping district in Charlotte Amalie on the North Side of the bay. We've never done ay shopping over there but I thought for some reason there had some decent shopping there, unless I am just wayyy off LOL

We've done Greenhouse before and wasn't our favorite but will keep it in mind; maybe we just had an off day.

Yes they are popular. I see they offer a 12:30 - 3:30 sail for 4 ppl at $600 each…

Yes the vast majority of shops are in town. Many of them are also in Havensight, but you find many more choices in town….

Definitely try something different, Gladys’ is one of the most recommended lunch spots. 😄

I've been trying to get in touch with Henry from Henry's Triple E Taxi and Tours.  Does anyone know if he is still working?  He usually responds to emails with 48 hours, but hasn't replied.  Also, I was not able to reach him by phone.

The VINow site has a link to the cruise ship schedule which shows the ships scheduled to port in WICO (Havensight) and Crown Bay.  there are always schedule changes and ships porting that were not scheduled for various reasons, but it gives you a good idea of how many fellow cruisers you have to compete with…

Does anyone have the website address for the number of ships at port?  When there are a lot, I tend to do a tour rather than just walk downtown.

What to Do in St. Thomas While on a Cruise

If you’re going on a Caribbean Cruise, and visiting beautiful St. Thomas, U.S.V.I., you’re in luck! St. Thomas is an amazing Caribbean cruise port and a long time favorite of many cruisers!

There are so many fabulous things to do in St. Thomas, from dreamy white sand beaches, interesting sightseeing tours, snorkeling excursions, duty-free shopping opportunities, and more. Perfect for kids and families, as well as adults and couples, St. Thomas has a lot to offer!

One of the US Virgin Islands, St. Thomas is an Eastern Caribbean port of call, as is often included as part of many Southern Caribbean cruises as well. When you arrive by cruise ship, you’ll be docking near the town of Charlotte Amalie, the capital of St. Thomas.

Arrival in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas – The Harbor

Have your camera ready as you sail into St. Thomas harbor. The view and landscape is picture perfect! You may even want to head up to the top deck of your cruise ship and take some amazing photos before heading ashore.

Depending on your cruise ship, ou’ll either dock in Havensight or Crown Bay. Havensight is the older and more established cruise port of the two, and it’s a bit easier to maneuver and get around in St. Thomas from here. 

That said, both Havensight and Crown Bay have shopping close by, restaurants and bars, and transportation to the best attractions in St. Thomas.

If you’re looking for things to do close to the cruise port, you can find a few, even some within walking distance (from Havensight in particular).

However, most activities will require either a shore excursion or tour , or transportation to a local beach or attraction. As you exit from the cruise port, you’ll see that cabs, shuttles and tours sold through local vendors, are plentiful.

As in any port of call, always be mindful of the all aboard time and make sure to return to your cruise ship with ample time. A word of caution, cruise ships will not wait for late passengers unless you’re on a ship sponsored excursion.

If you’re only in St. Thomas for a day, it might be hard to choose what to do. While St. Thomas is known for it’s stunning beaches and snorkeling, you can also find interesting sight-seeing tours full of culture and history, shopping and even some adventurous activities that will keep you busy as well.

Personally, we don’t like to over saturate our port days and get too busy. So we remind ourselves that when we enjoy a cruise port, we’ll make plans to take another cruise and return!

Here’s a list of the very best things to do in St. Thomas while on a cruise

The bustling town of Charlotte Amalie is a main attraction in St. Thomas and is a 15 minute cab ride away from both cruise ports.

If you like, you can actually walk into town from Havensight. Although it’s only about a 30 minute walk, the weather in St. Thomas is usually hot and sunny, so a cab or open air shuttle may be more comfortable.

If you enjoy an easy day of visiting on your own, you can create your historic own “walking tour”, do some duty-free shopping, and stop in at a local bar or restaurant to soak in a bit of the St. Thomas island life.

3. Duty-free Shopping

St. Thomas is known for it’s duty free shopping deals, especially for gold jewelry and gemstones and quality tablecloths and linens. You’ll also find lots of items that make great souvenirs.

In Charlotte Amalie, you’ll find hundreds of brand name and local shops along Main Street and the cross streets. You’ll also find a local straw or flea market with some handmade jewelry, t-shirts and other souvenirs.

In the Historic district of Charlotte Amalie, there are several building and sights history buffs will enjoy.

4. Blackbeard’s Castle

Blackbeard’s Castle, a historic site, is named for the famous pirate Edward Thatch (they called him Blackbeard because of his… you guessed it – black beard. The castle is really a watchtower, which overlooks Charlotte Amalie and boasts breathtaking views.

5. Fort Christian

Built in the late 1600’s, Fort Christian is the oldest standing structure in St. Thomas. While this fort was built by King Christian V to protect Danish settlers on the island of St. Thomas, over time it’s been used as administrative offices, a church and even a prison. It is now a museum, housing artifacts

6. St. Thomas Synagogue

The St. Thomas Synagogue is full of history and a must see for those of all faiths. In the heart of Charlotte Amalie, you’ll find the synagogue located just two block up from Main Street.

Inside the Hebrew Congregation of St. Thomas, you’ll get a brief history of the synagogue, the Jewish history of the island, and the significance of it’s sand floor.

Although guided tours are available, this is an active synagogue and working congregation. 

7. 99 Steps

Another tourist attraction located in Charlotte Amalie, closeby to the synagogue, is 99 Steps. Although 99 Steps is the most famous and most photographed, there are many of these “step” streets which cut through the hills in St. Thomas.

These step streets were originally built from ballast bricks of the tall ships coming from the Old World.

Funnily enough, there are actually 103 steps in this historic St. Thomas landmark.

Best Beaches in St. Thomas

St. Thomas’ white sand beaches are gorgeous and each one has a special character. Depending on what you enjoy most, you’ll likely have a preference.

8. Magens Bay Beach

Without a doubt, Magens Bay is the most famous as well as most popular beach in St. Thomas for cruise passengers. For many years, it was on several top ten lists of most beautiful beaches in the world.

Magens Bay Beach is a horseshoe shaped beach with pristine, crystal clear and calm waters. The colors of the blues and turquoise waters set against the lush mountains where it nestles, is picture perfect!

Magens Bay has good facilities. You can rent chairs and loungers, and there’s a nice beach bar and restaurant on site.

It does get crowded, but if you’d like to find a quieter spot to sit, head to either end of the beach and you’ll be fine.

9. Sapphire Beach

Sapphire Beach is known for it’s stunning sapphire blue waters of course! However, you’ll also get a beautiful view of the neighboring island of St. John.

Sapphire Beach is located on the Eastern end of St. Thomas, and has a lot to offer those who enjoy an active beach day. Not only is the snorkeling pretty good, but there’s also jet skiing, parasailing and other activities available.

10. Coki Beach

Coki beach is another popular beach for cruisers. It’s located on the Northern coast of the island and most enjoyed for it’s snorkeling and diving.

Coki Beach is a bit smaller than Magens Bay, but does also have facilities, and is very pretty.

Coral World Ocean Park is located here, so this can make a great full day to combine a beach and aquarium visit.

11. Lindquist Beach

The quietest of the beaches, Lindquist Beach is known to cruise passengers who prefer to avoid the crowds. Located on the Eastern side of the island, this secluded beach has shallow and calm waters and a breathtaking view of the island of St. John.

While it has basic facilities, such as washrooms and picnic benches, other amenities are limited. You’ll need to bring any food or drinks with you, if you decide to head to Lindquist Beach.

12. Trunk Bay, St. John

One of the excursions that comes most recommended, is a visit to the neighboring island of St. John. In contrast to bustling St. Thomas, St. John is a much less busy and not commercialized as most of the island is part of the US Virgin Islands National Park.

The most popular beach for cruisers and those who want to snorkel, is Trunk Bay. Perfect for families and kids, this beach has an underwater snorkeling trail that’s accessible from the beach and close to the shoreline.

The island of St John is accessible by ferry and you can go your own, or book an excursion with your cruise line. If you do take the ferry on your own, do make sure to pay close attention to the ferry schedule so that you get back to the cruise ship on time (and avoid being a pier runner/missing the ship )

13. Honeymoon Beach / Water Island

One of the quieter beaches you can enjoy is Honeymoon Beach on Water Island. It’s a small and simple beach, but the water is beautiful and clear. There’s a cute little hot dog and burger restaurant, where you can grab a bite to eat in paradise.

To get to Honeymoon Beach, you can either take a ferry to Water Island, or you can go with a cruise line excursion. During a past cruise we did a snorkeling excursion which included a stop at this beach, and we enjoyed it.

Things to do close to the cruise port in St. Thomas

Closeby to the cruise port are bars and restaurants, as well as duty-free shopping. If you’re looking for free or inexpensive things to do in St. Thomas, there are a few ideas.

The Havensight cruise port has a large shopping plaza right outside the cruise port gates, and has attractions that are close enough that you can go to your own with one of the local taxis or shuttles.

14. Skyride to Paradise Point

Just a few minutes walk from the Havensight cruise port, you’ll find the Sky Ride to Paradise Point. Head up 700 feet to the top of the mountain by tram and experience incredible views of St. Thomas and the harbor.

This has been a favorite shore excursion for many cruisers over the years for taking Instaworthy photos of the stunning harbor. Plus, there’s a gift shop, restaurant and bar where you may want to stop for a famous Bailey’s Bushwacker.

You can easily visit in about an hour or two, and still have time for an afternoon excursion if you like.

15. Havensight Mall

The Havensight Mall is made up of over 50 shops and boutiques. While you can head into Charlotte Amalie and shop on Main Street, if you’re doing an excursion and time is limited, consider doing your duty free shopping close to the cruise port.

St. Thomas is a bit of a shopper’s paradise; shops include jewelry and gemstones, liqueur and spirits, clothing boutiques and souvenir shops. You can find some bargains (don’t be afraid to haggle a bit).

There’s also a pharmacy in the area, if you need some essentials or over the counter medications you may have forgotten to bring on your cruise .

Noteworthy Shore Excursions in St. Thomas

If you’re in St. Thomas on a cruise, you may want to do an excursion either with your cruise line or with a local tour operator. 

While you can easily head to the beach on your own, some activities and tours require a bit more organization, but the experience might be worth it!

St. Thomas has beautiful crystal clear water and underwater sea life, which makes snorkeling excursions quite popular. Some snorkeling excursions include at stop at one of St. Thomas’ beautiful beaches.

17. Turtle Cove to Buck Island Snorkeling Excursion

If you’ve dreamed of swimming with turtles (me!), consider this St. Thomas snorkeling excursion. We actually booked this one in the past and enjoyed it. 

I will say, we didn’t see as many turtles as we hoped, but we still had a great time and it was a cool experience.

18. Sunset Sail

If your cruise ship is docked until late at night, consider the ultimate romantic excursion, a sunset catamaran sail. 

Cruise Tip: If you’re doing an evening activity, consider booking your shore excursion with the cruise line for peace of mind. The cruise ship won’t wait for you if you’re late and are not with a cruise line sponsored tour.

19. Coral World Ocean Park

Located at Coki Beach, the Coral World Ocean Park is one of St. Thomas’ most popular attractions for families. This aquarium offers many opportunities to interact and learn about a variety of marine life, including sea lions, dolphins, and sea turtles.

If you’re visiting with kids, they’ll love the touch pool and turtle pool. You may aslo want to check out the Sea Trek Helmet Dive for a fun and different experience.

A tour of the island of St. Thomas is great for an overview of the whole island and visits to some of the most popular spots. You’ll drive to Mountain Top, where you’ll have amazing views of the island and a chance to take some photos. Some sightseeing tours will include a stop at Magens Bay or one of the other St. Thomas beaches.

For solo travelers, couples or families that prefer a more adventurous activity while in St. Thomas, the Tree Limin’ Extreme Ziplining is an awesome experience.

This large zipline course soars through St. Thomas’ Caribbean rainforest and offers breathtaking views of the island and it’s famous beaches.

22. St. Thomas Mangrove Lagoon and Kayak Tour

As busy as Charlotte Amalie and St. Thomas beaches can be, there are actually amazing places that are off the beaten path, that are worth a visit. Check out St. Thomas’ Mangrove lagoon Wildlife Sanctuary and Marine Preserve where you can  for a moderately active kayak tour.

Along Main Street in Charlotte Amalie, there are many local restaurants and bars where cruise travelers can enjoy the day. There are also some food and drink tours that are available.

23. St. Thomas Food and Rum Tour

If you love sightseeing, food and culture, then a food and rum tour is a great way to visit and experience St. Thomas. This tour takes place in the Downtown Charlotte Amalie Historic district, and includes eating Caribbean dishes at local restaurants. 

You’ll also sample and learn to make one of the St. Thomas’ local drinks, the Painkiller.

All you need to know about the most popular shore excursions and tours for cruise passengers to St Thomas (Charlotte Amalie) port in 2022.

All cruise lines offer an array of shore excursions that cover all possible activities, attractions, and highlights in the cruise port of St. Thomas.

Even if you only want to relax on a beach or explore St. John ( a sister island) on your own, cruise lines have these types of shore excursions available. Cruise passengers should be aware that some of these excursions can only be experienced if you book onboard.

But there are also many attractions that can be explore on your own - or independently as savvy cruisers like to say - and it doesn't make sense to spend money onboard. For example, if the cruise ship passenger wants to go to Charlotte Amalie for a shopping spree, it doesn't make sense to pay for a tour.

The same is true if you want to explore the historical landmarks Charlotte Amalie. In fact many landmarks are not included in the excursion program. However, it is always good to look at what the cruise line offers - below, is the Editor's Choice of excursions organized by Cruise Lines and available onboard your cruise ship.

1. Best of St. Thomas and Shopping (and Magens Bay)

This is one of the most popular tours in St. Thomas combining sightseeing of the island and leisure time to shop in Charlotte Amalie. Some cruise lines (like Carnival and Princess) also offer a couple of hours of beach time at Magens Bay.

2. Kayak, Hike and Snorkel (Mangrove)

This tour takes the cruise ship passenger to the Mangrove Lagoon Wildlife Sanctuary and Marine Preserve - a 16 acre deserted island. Here the cruise ship passenger will paddle a 2-person sea kayak through mangroves and pristine waters. Snorkel the pristine waters of Cas Cay. Hike through the forest. Look forward to wildlife sightings like a visit to a hermit crab village, a coral beach, jellyfish, eagle rays, conch, sea cucumbers, starfish, turtles, octopus and so much more.

3. Tree Limin’ Extreme Zip Line

After a ride up St. Peter Mountain in a Swiss military vehicle to the summit, the cruise ship passenger will enjoy breathtaking views whilst crossing sky bridges to start the ultimate adventure in the Caribbean with 6 zip-lines. These include the exhilarating Yo-Yo zip, which allows you to travel backwards and forwards on the same line.

4. BOSS Underwater Adventure (Underwater Scooter)

BOSS, the Breathing Observation Submersible Scooter, is an amazing way of exploring the underwater world with no diving experience as it is designed to allow you to breathe normally while you drive undersea. On this excursion, a 60-foot custom dive yacht will take the cruise ship passenger to a site with crystal clear waters, where you will enjoy a stunning guided tour of wonderful tropical reefs with colorful fish.

5. Turtle Cove Sail &Snorkel (Buck Island)

Experience the thrill of sailing onboard a catamaran (or a pirate schooner) around the famous Buck Island and snorkeling in a beautiful cove. These are easy waters to snorkel with an abundance of tropical fish and brilliant corals. Optionally, you can just swim or soak up the sun on the open deck. Good to Know: full-day tours offer a Caribbean buffet and complimentary beverages, including rum drinks, besides snacks and sodas onboard. 6. Sea Lion Encounter (Coral World Park)

Touch, pet and play games with agile sea lions on land and in water in the Undersea Observatory Tower. The excursion includes the admittance to the Coral World Ocean Park allowing free time for a self-guided tour. Here you can explore a stunning mangrove lagoon, a sea turtle pool, an open-air shark tank and 21 aquariums. Optionally, you can enjoy free time at Coki Beach just yards away from the park.

7. Screamin Eagle Jet Boat (Water Adventure)

Get ready to get wet on a wild ride in the St. Thomas waters with 180-degree spins, wild fishtails and power brake stops aboard a 650 HP turbo-charged jet boat at exhilaratingly high speeds. Please note that you will be sprayed by seawater. There will be stops for narration.

8. Exploring St. John (On your Own)

If the cruise ship passenger has already been in St. Thomas and explored this unique Caribbean island, the smaller St. John's island is close by and must see that will be both surprising in its pristine beauty and quaint charm. It is easy to visit on your own - literally - as all you need to do is get on a taxi to Red Hook and from here get on a ferry to Cruz Bay in St. John. Alternatively, you can have the transportation organized by your cruise line for an extra cost if it makes you feel more confident.

Coki Beach & Coral World Day Tour

Travel to one of the best marine parks in the Caribbean and spend time at its nearby beach, all in one day. See the underwater world in a whole new perspective during your visit to Coral World on this St. Thomas excursion. The park is designed so that all members of the family can see the treasures of the undersea world up close.

After being picked up at the pier, you will have a direct transfer to the park. After checking in at the front gate, where you will be given a map of the park. During your free time, explore the numerous exhibits which include:

The Undersea Observatory Tower - The only one of its kind in the Caribbean where you can go 15 feet below the water's surface to see marine life in the wild.

The Caribbean Reef Encounter - An 80,000-gallon coral reef aquarium that you are in the middle of. It is home to an amazing array of local corals, sponges, fish, sea anemones, lobsters, conchs, stingrays and other marine creatures.

Shark Shallows - A large pool that is home to the juvenile sharks. View a variety of sharks from above and below which may include nurse, lemon, blacktip and reef sharks.

Stingray Lagoon - Home to Southern Stingrays that like to bury themselves in the sand when they are not gliding around the pool.

Turtle Pool - home to rescued green sea turtle hatchlings who are now permanent residents. Coral World also serves as a rehabilitation center for sick or injured turtles.

Critter Corners - Is an up-close look at other animals that live outside the water in the Caribbean. A walk-through aviary, habitats, and a nature trail are home to parrots, iguana, ducks, tortoises as well as native plants and trees.

Upon arrival, don't forget to check on the feeding times and presentations for that day. Your Coral World pass is good for the day allowing you the opportunity to come and go from the beach for additional park exploration, an afternoon feeding or to purchase food and drink at either the Beach Cafe or the Shark Bar located within Coral World. Small lockers are available at Coral World for a CASH deposit of $10 US of which $7 is returned upon return of the key.

Adjacent to Coral World is Coki Beach. Although not the largest on the island, it is the favorite of locals due to its protected waters and abundance of marine life. There are small wooden booths along the beach where you can rent beach chairs, umbrellas, snorkel gear, water activities, or purchase food and drink. You can snorkel right off the beach or (space permitting) you may be able to join a boat tour (not included in tour price) out to snorkel on of the further reefs. A public restroom is available at the beach.

Your transfer back to the pier will depart from where you were dropped off at Coral World. You will have approximately 6 hours 30 minutes of free time at Coral World / Coki Beach.
