Three Days in Iceland: Reykjavik & Snæfellsnes Peninsula
Our time with Arctic Adventures was great. We learned a lot and saw such beautiful landscapes. There was some stress related to not knowing where we were going to stay prior to our departure… it wasn’t until we had landed in Reykjavik that we knew which hotel to go to. I wish airport transfers were included as it would have been less to worry about. All in all, it was a memorable trip.
- Mountain Hikes
Landmannalaugar Pearl of the Highlands - 3 Day Tour
This tour was great! Our guide John Hoo was very nice, always helping and a great cook! I couldn't make all the treks but still, he managed to advise and help before going to planned hikes with the group. Also, food intolerances were respected.
Laugavegur Trek - 4 Day Hiking Tour (Huts)
I spent four days with the hugest grin from ear to ear. This tour was fantastic, our guide was exceptional both guiding the trekking and cooking delicious meals. For anyone worried about doing this tour alone I would say just go for it I was the only one and had the best trip ever!

Iceland Escape
It was a great time. Everything was easily followed and organized well. Only drawback was the weather, and not being able to see the northern lights during our time. All things considered, will definitely be going back to Iceland.

- Coach / Bus
Iceland Express
This tour is highly recommended as it provides an excellent taste of beautiful Iceland. Our tour guide, Vilhjalmur, was informative and a pleasure to interact with.
- Sightseeing
Iceland including the Blue Lagoon (Summer, 6 Days)
The Trafalgar tour of Iceland and the Blue Lagoon was great. This was our first organized tour and we were a little nervous what to expect. It was a smallish group (around 20 people) which made for a more personal trip, and also more room on the coach. The tour itinerary included a number of Icelandic cultural experiences that we would likely have missed if we had organized our own plans. These made for a much richer trip, and we were glad they were included. Kudos go to the tour guides when a day's schedule had to be reworked at an hour's notice due to 100mph wind gusts that made driving unsafe. The "plan-B" turned out to be a rewarding experience in its own right, bravo Xavier & Amy! The highlight of the trip was seeing the Northern Lights on a nighttime boat ride outside Rekjavik harbor. (this cannot be guaranteed, but we were lucky). A low light was the Blue Lagoon, which was rather run-down. We had independently been to Sky Lagoon before the trip started, and that was a much better experience.
- €100 deposit on some dates Some departure dates offer you the chance to book this tour with a lower deposit.
3 Day Winter Package with Golden Circle, South Coast & Aurora
Loved the 3 x trips we took with BusTravel Iceland, we were so lucky with the weather each time & saw some incredible sights - highlights including the Secret Lagoon, waterfalls, glaciers and of course, the elusive Aurora. Busses were efficient, clean & reliable and the drivers / guides were polite, friendly and very informative. Would recommend!
5 Days Land of Northern Lights
Amazing tour and great tour leader
What people love about Reykjavik Tours
Pedro was an excellent guide, and we had a really nice gtoup on the trip. The views from the hikes really were amazing. Accommodation was a mountain hut, basic and shared, but really everything you could ask for in the remote location. Highly recommend this trip.
The walk was excellent. Louis the tour guide was exceptional. His knowledge about the area and geology was brilliant. I will always remember Louis!!!

Stop 2: Exploring Downtown
The downtown area is your next stop. After checking into your hotel or Airbnb head to one of the oldest streets in Iceland, Laugavegur Street. For a bite to eat at the numerous restaurants and bars. Or stroll along and visit the shop and boutiques. You can even start your Reykjavik city tour itinerary here and save the Blue Lagoon for evening time.
Be on the lookout for street art as it is all over the city, and a great free way to learn about the culture. Next, head to the park and square to have a picnic or just watch people. You can visit the Reykjavik Cathedral or the Parliament as you spend a leisurely day exploring downtown Iceland on foot.
Better yet take a tour that explains the history and take the guesswork out of what to do! Tours range from free ( please tip!) to more specialized food or history tours. A great option for those visiting Reykjavik in one day for the first time.

Stop 3: Hallgrímskirkja
Is one of the most famous sites in Reykjavik as it is the tallest church in Iceland. Best known for its pipe organ, which is almost 50 feet high the church took over 40 years to build. A statue of Leif Erickson is also on the property. The church is free to visit but please know it has regular religious services.
Every visitor needs a view of the entire city on your Reykjavik Itinerary! Make sure to head to the observation deck for that view. The admission for the observation deck is under $10- and an elevator that takes you to the top.

Stop 5: Harpa Concert Hall
Next stroll along the harbor, we recommend this stop as part of your evening stroll. You will reach Harpa Concert Hall, an architecturally stunning multicolored glass building that lights up nightly.

From a spa visit, National Park, whale watching, and Northern lights you are sure to see it all!
Stop 1: New Sky Lagoon
After spending all of yesterday exploring downtown Reykjavik, what better way to reset than a visit to another geothermal spa. Located just 15 minutes from the city center, New Sky Lagoon opened in 2021 and became the go-to for rest and relaxation.
Visits start at $50, but we suggest splurging for the 7-step ritual! Start with the relaxing geothermal lagoon, followed by glacier cold pool, saunas, cold mist, scrub, steam, and end with a shower.
After being thoroughly relaxed, you can enjoy a bit to eat in the cafe or head to the next stop.
Stop 2: Thingvellir National Park
Thingvellir National park is a must for those wanting to explore more than downtown Reykjavik in 2 days! It is just a 45-minute drive from downtown and is a very popular destination for those looking to experience the natural beauty of Iceland.
For those who did not rent a car, there are plenty of tours you can book to visit here. It is worth noting that the National Park is free to visit but there is a small parking fee.
Stop in the visitors center to learn about the National Park , at this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Warm-up with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate and snack, shop for souvenirs, and grab a map of the park! It is also one of the Game Of Thrones Filming Locations !
Now it is time to explore the National Park. We think one of the coolest things to do in Thingvellir National Park is to walk between the tectonic plates of North America and Eurasian that meet here! Snap a photo of yourself straddling the divide. Or for the adventurous traveler and scuba certified you can snorkel or scuba diving the Silfra Fissure .
Finally, visit the first waterfall on our Rekjavik itinerary! The Oxarafoss waterfall is really easy to get to from one of the car parks in the park. It is an easy 10-minute walk. An added bonus is the Thingvellir Church. Not only one of the prettiest churches in Iceland but also one of the oldest.

The second option is a Northern Lights Bus tour . This four-hour tour departs at 8:30 or 9:30 pm depending on the season. Best restaurants for your Reykjavik itinerary
There is no shortage of amazing places to eat in Reykjavik to eat. It is worth noting the capital city is more expensive than you will find once you explore the Ring Road or Golden Circle Route. We have curated a list of the best places for breakfast , and great restaurants you must try on your Reykjavik Itinerary.
Noodle Station
One of our favorites is Noodle Station! The restaurant (while not cheap) is on the inexpensive side as far as Iceland goes.
Noddle Station is frequented by locals and visitors alike who all seek out the delicious chicken, beef, or vegetable noodle soup. Mixed into the broth are secret ingredients that come straight from a family recipe passed down from the owner’s grandmother.
You can expect noodle soup full of delightful flavors, and you’ll wish the ingredients weren’t such a well-guarded secret. With solid portion sizes and quick service, Noodle Station is the perfect stop to thaw out and warm up before continuing to explore the stops on your Reykjavik itinerary.
Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur
You may think, why go to Iceland to eat hot dogs at an unassuming hot dog stand? The answer is that Bæjarins Betztu Pylsur serves uniquely Icelandic hot dogs and has become almost as much a tourist attraction as it is a destination for excellent Reykjavik street food. Plus, it is one of the most inexpensive places you will eat.
The little red stand has been serving up hot dogs near the Reykjavik harbor since 1937. Delighting many a local with its lamb hot dogs topped with fried onions, raw onions, ketchup, Icelandic sweet mustard, and remoulade.
Visit the one at Tryggvagata 1 in downtown Reykjavik.
Sea Baron (or Sægreifinn) is located on Reykjavik’s harbor. If you’re looking for fresh, Icelandic seafood done right, this is one of the best places to eat!
Known for their famous, mouthwatering lobster soup, Sea Baron also offers delicious fish skewers featuring all kinds of fresh fish grilled on a spear. The bonus is the delicious restaurant won’t break the bank!
Pair your meal with a beer or a free cup of coffee and you’ll have all the fuel you need to keep exploring this beautiful country.
Reykjavik Fish
The best fish and chips in Reykjavik is served at Reykjavik Fish. After a busy first day of exploring, the large portions of delicious battered cod paired with one of five different sauces will hit the spot. Cod is the only option for the fish and chips, but it’s unbelievably fresh and distinctly Icelandic!
Also served are other traditional Icelandic dishes such as arctic char, Icelandic plokkari (gratinated fish and potatoes), and fish soup. Finish your meal with a taste of one of the local beers in Iceland.

Full Refund / Flexible Cancellation Policy
No worries! We've got you covered if there are any changes to your trip to Iceland: it's always possible to either put your booking on hold (bookings never expire) or reschedule to your new travel dates. We also offer full refunds if you cancel your booking with more than 24 hours prior to your tour :) All bookings cancelled within 24 hours of the tour departure are not refundable.
What if I have dietary restrictions or allergies?
We do everything we can to accommodate all dietary restrictions and/or allergies :) We can easily arrange alternative options for our vegetarian and pescatarian guests and for gluten & lactose intolerants. Nuts, seeds, fruits & shellfish are also easy to avoid. If you have any dietary restrictions or allergies, please let us know in the 'special requests' section when you book and we will accommodate you the best we can! Vegans are more than welcome in our tour but unfortunately, the traditional Icelandic cuisine is not very welcoming for a vegan diet. Vegans can unfortunately not enjoy 90% of the cuisines in this tour.
Is everything included in the tour - or is the food cost separate?
Yup! Of course, everything is included in our tour. So, all you have to do is to show up hungry like a wolf and we will take care of the rest! We visit 5-6 of our favourite restaurants and taste over 8 amazing local cuisines :)
How many guests are on each Reykjavik Food Walk tour?
In our open Reykjavik Food Walks, we always keep the groups at maximum 12-14 guests. We do this to make the experience as personal and fun as possible! For private groups we can accommodate larger groups, feel free to get in touch at [email protected]
Is there a dress code?
No, of course not! The only thing we recommend is dressing according to the weather so you won't get cold. Just don't wear crocs. Nobody should.
Is it possible to do a private Reykjavik Food Walk?
Yes of course! it is of course possible to arrange a private foodie tour! Private tours are very popular with larger groups of friends and families. Simply press send us a quick email through the contact form below or directly to [email protected] Our super friendly office team will get back to you right away!
Where does the food tour start and end?
Our delicious Reykjavik Food tour begins by the main entrance of Harpa Concert Hall, a big glass building, right in the heart of downtown Reykjavik. Harpa Concert Hall is easy to find and very centrally located on Austurbakki 2, 101 Reykjavík. Harpa is within walking distance from most hotels, hostels and apartments in Reykjavik. For guests driving their own car, there are multiple parking spots nearby – and underneath the building. Our tour always ends in the centre of downtown Reykjavik. Just a couple minutes walking from both our meeting location (Harpa Concert Hall) and most hotels in Reykjavik!
How much walking is there involved in the Reykjavik Food Walk?
The walking distance in our Reykjavik Food tour is approx. 2 km or 1,2 miles but it can vary between tours :) The tour is really easy as we are never walking further than to our next restaurant where we will sit down and enjoy a delicious local cuisine. Furthermore, the walking is usually slow paced as we are exploring the city as we go!
Ok, I'm in. Now what?

Reykjavík Travel Guide
Reykjavík is the capital of Iceland and the northernmost capital of any sovereign state in the world.
Browse Iceland's biggest selection of tours in Reykjavik tours or read this article for the top things to do in Reykjavik .
Despite a small population (approximately 120,000, with just over 200,000 in the Greater Reykjavík area), it is a vibrant city that draws an ever-increasing number of visitors every year. It is the financial, cultural, and political center of Iceland, and has a reputation for being one of the cleanest and safest cities in the world.
The city of Reykjavík is located in southwest Iceland by Faxaflói Bay. Throughout the ages, the landscape has been shaped by glaciers, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions and the area is geothermal; after all, its name translates to ‘Smoky Bay’.
Much of the current city area was subglacial during the Ice Age, with the glacier reaching as far as the Álftanes peninsula, while other areas lay under the sea. After the end of the Ice Age, the land rose as the glaciers drifted away, and it began to take on its present form.
The coastline of Reykjavík is set with peninsulas, coves, straits, and islands, most notably the island of Viðey , and seabirds and whales frequent the shores. The mountain ring as seen from the shore is particularly beautiful.
Mount Esjan is the highest mountain in the vicinity of Reykjavík and the most distinctive feature of the coastline. This majestic summit is also highly popular amongst hikers and climbers. Other notable mountains that can be seen from the seaside are Akrafjall and Skarðsheiði.
On clear days, one may even see as far as the legendary Snæfellsjökull glacier , at the end of the Snæfellsnes peninsula .
The largest river to run through the city is Elliðaá in Elliðaárdalur valley, which is also one of Iceland’s best rivers for salmon fishing.
Transportation
There are no trains or trams in Iceland, but most people travel by car. The city also operates a bus system. There are two major harbors in town, the old harbor in the center and Sundahöfn in the east.
The domestic Reykjavík Airport is located at Vatnsmýrin, not far from the city center and close to the hill Öskjuhlíð and the restaurant, vantage point, and exhibition center Perlan. The international Keflavík Airport at Miðnesheiði heath then lies around 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the city.
Cars, jeeps, and bicycles can be readily rented in the city and many organized tours are also being offered. It is, however, quite easy to walk between the major sites.
What to See & Do in Reykjavik
The local arts scene is strong in Iceland, with annual events and festivals , and many of the artists from which have hit the international stage.
Major events taking place in Reykjavík include Iceland Airwaves, Reykjavík Pride, RIFF (The Reykjavík International Film Festival), The Reykjavík Literature Festival, Culture Night, the Reykjavík Arts Festival, Food & Fun, the Reykjavík Fashion Festival, and the Sónar music festival.
Amongst the famous people from Reykjavík are musicians like Björk Guðmundsdóttir and Sigur Rós , and writers Halldór Laxness (born on the main street, Laugavegur ) and Arnaldur Indriðason.
Those eager to soak up the local culture should visit the city’s many museums , exhibitions, and galleries , and check out live music at the cafés, bars, and concert venues dotted around. You could look at the programs of what’s on at the Harpa music hall or the theatres, or else plan a few hours at the lighthouse at Grótta , the shopping street of Laugavegur, or the old harbor and the flea market.
You could even book a bird- and whale-watching tour or a visit to Viðey island. Ther possibilities are endless.
Make sure to visit the public square of Austurvöllur, one of the city’s most popular gathering places, where you’ll also find the national parliament, the Alþingi, as well as the state church, a statue of independence hero Jón Sigurðsson, cafés, bars, and restaurants.
Austurvöllur was central in the protests following the banking collapse of 2008, along with Lækjargata, home to the House of Government. You are also not likely to miss the great church of Hallgrímskirkja that towers over the city from the hill of Skólavörðuholt, from which you’ll get a great view of the city.
Try a walk by the city pond, Tjörnin , to greet the many birds that frequent the area and to visit the city hall, stationed by its banks. A beautiful park lies by the pond, ideal for a nice walk, and sometimes concerts get held there.
Further off is the campus of the University of Iceland, the Nordic house, and the Vatnsmýrin wetland, a particularly pleasant place, but be mindful to not disturb the wildlife thereby keeping to the pathways.
For a nice swim on a warm day, we particularly recommend Nauthólsvík beach, which is heated with geothermal water. Those who love a dip should also visit the Laugardalur valley , home to one of the city’s best swimming pools, which sits a short walk away from Ásmundarsafn gallery, a beautiful botanical garden, and a domestic zoo.
A walk by the Ægissíða beach, with its old fishing sheds, in the western part of Reykjavík also holds a particular charm. From there, you can see all the way to the president’s house at Bessastaðir, which is also a historical site in its own right, having been the educational center of Iceland for centuries.
Another place that offers one of the city’s best views is Perlan , up on Öskjuhlíð hill. The hill itself is a popular place to spend a few hours, with over 176,000 trees and great opportunities for walking and cycling. Perlan also has an observation deck with great views, a café, and an exhibition center.
Furthermore, the city is a short drive from many of Iceland’s major attractions, most famously the Golden Circle and the Blue Lagoon . In close vicinity, you’ll also find the Heiðmörk preservation area , a favorite local site of the people of Reykjavík, as well as the Blue Mountains , one of Iceland’s best skiing venues.
Finally, we’d like to stress that these are only some suggestions of the many things you might check out in Reykjavík . Whatever you choose to do, we hope you’ll be able to make the most of your visit and we wish you a pleasant stay in our capital.

The 10 best things to do in Reykjavik
D espite its modest proportions, you won’t ever be short of anything to do in Reykjavik. Alongside alluring natural sights — Tjörnin Lake, the pretty harbour, Mount Esja — the capital also offers museums and art galleries galore, plus some fascinating architecture (the soaring Hallgrimskirkja church being a case in point), and a unique blend of local community dynamics with a worldy cosmopolitanism. That’s without mentioning the idiosyncratic shopping, abundant hot pools, and a year-round calendar foaming with concerts, events and festivals.
For more Reykjavik inspiration, see our guides to the best hotels , restaurants and bars .
Bird-watch at Reykjavik's pretty central pond
Reykjavik's scenic central pond draws an impressive variety of birdlife, from Arctic terns and swans to greylag geese and mallard ducks. Strolling round Tjörnin Lake, which is fringed by cultural and municipal buildings, parks and residences, is a popular local pastime – so much so that the lake is sometimes referred to as the 'biggest bread soup in the world'. It’s best to feed them grains and seeds if possible, since bread isn’t the best for their diets and also attracts aggressive seagulls.
Insider’s Tip: Pop into the nearby City Hall to find an exhibition hall featuring an engrossing 3D map of the country, and works by local artists.

Take in the views from the tower of the city's tallest landmark
It’s impossible to miss Hallgrímskirkja, the city’s main church; at 240-feet tall, it’s by far the highest landmark in the city and its rocket-shaped exterior certainly makes it the most distinctive sight in town. It was designed by famed national architect Guðjón Samúelsson, who was inspired by the country’s basalt rock formations. Admire the statue of national hero Leifur Eiríksson outside before exploring the rich interior, which includes an immense organ with over 5,000 pipes.
Insider’s Tip: Take the lift up to the church’s tower for magnificent views over Reykjavik’s colourful rooftops and out across the harbour and the sea. Note that the tower shuts half an hour before the usual closing time.
Contact: hallgrimskirkja.is
Find time for a dip in one of the capital's hot pools
A swim in one of Reykjavik’s geothermal pools is both a wonderful way to relax and — if you select the right spot — an excellent way to meet and mingle with the locals, who use the pools to socialise. One of the best is Vesturbæjarlaug, which can be reached via a pleasant 20-minute promenade walk from the city or by bus. It has four hot tubs, one cold bath, a large outdoor pool and a steam room.
Insider’s Tip: Be aware that Icelandic pools and changing areas are often mixed sex. If you don’t have your swimming costume you can rent one from most places.

Experience live music at the city's most impressive cultural venue
The Harpa Concert Hall has gone from being a costly controversy (it was built during the economic collapse) to one of the country’s main sources of cultural pride. Home to the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and the Icelandic Opera, its stunning facade, designed by Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson, contains several visually stunning halls with outstanding acoustics, as well as a record shop, café and restaurant and more.
Insider’s Tip: Another option is to take one of the 30-minute daily guided tours, which offer insights into the history, architecture, design and acoustics of the building, as well as visiting parts of the interior not normally open to the public.

Explore Reykjavik’s regenerated harbour
Reykjavik’s harbour area, once the lone preserve of ships and their captains and fishermen, still functions as a traditional harbour, complete with trawlers, whaling ships and other boats. But a recent regeneration project, starting with the Harpa Concert Hall development, has made it into a mini-district of its own, with cafés, restaurants and even museums to visit.
Insider’s Tip: Wandering aimlessly is pleasant enough, but specific activities to look out for include taking a whale- or puffin-watching trip from one of the harbour tour companies such as Elding , enjoying a delicious lobster soup at Sægreifinn , or browsing the Reykjavik Maritime Museum whose permanent exhibition explores 150 years of fisheries in Reykjavik.

Learn the story of Iceland, from Vikings to the present day
Icelandic history has the advantage of a relatively straightforward and clear narrative while still containing plenty of drama. The permanent exhibition at Reykjavik’s National Museum tells the entire story from settlement to the present-day, making great use of various archeological finds, as well as historic photos. Among the 2,000 objects are replicas of swords and drinking horns, plus an elaborately decorated 13th-century church door from Valþjófsstaðir.
Insider’s Tip : Grab a free smartphone audio guide to hear a lot of entertaining extra detail.

Go back in time at a rural open-air museum
The Arbær Open Air Museum, part of the Reykjavík City Museum, was created to give an example of how rural Reykjavik life used to be just a few decades ago. Essentially a village a 15-minute drive outside of the capital, it was built around the remnants of a working farm and supplemented by buildings moved here from the city-centre, as well as some domestic animals and old machinery.
Insider’s Tip: Staff dress in period costume and offer workshops for traditional crafts such as spinning yarn, making candles and churning butter, making it an interesting visit for adults and children alike. Free guided tours take place daily at 1pm.

Hike past lakes, waterfalls and cliffs in a pretty national park
Þingvellir National Park, located around 30 miles outside of the city, is one of the most enticing natural sites in reasonable proximity to Reykjavik. It is most famously the site of Iceland’s original Viking parliament (Assembly) but it’s also a stunning natural park with easy to follow (mostly) wooden walkways guiding visitors past lakes, waterfalls, cliffs and occasional buildings such as the pretty Þingvellir church.
Insider’s Tip: If you’re a water enthusiast, book a trip to the park’s Silfra fissure , the only place in the world where you can snorkel and dive between the North American and Eurasian continents.
Contact: thingvellir.is
Enjoy outdoor art in a peaceful sculpture garden
The Reykjavik Art Museum is split between three different venues, the most alluring being Ásmundarsafn — a museum dedicated to the work and life of sculptor Ásmundur Sveinsson. It’s not as central as the other two locations (although it is still only a 30-minute walk from the city centre) but the reward is a unique piece of Mediterranean-style white domed architecture, which the artist designed himself, plus a selection of his works both inside and in the pleasant sculpture garden. Keen for more? The more central Hafnarhús part of the Reykjavík Art Museum, has six galleries with a mix of contemporary art (local and international) and a permanent collection of works from Iceland’s most famous pop artist, Erró.
Insider’s Tip: To make the most of the trip, combine it with a walk to the nearby botanic garden, Reykjavik Park and Zoo , or a dip in the thermal pools at the Laugardalur Sports Complex .

Marshall House
The Marshall House was built in 1948 in the Grandi area—an extension of the harbour district that has long been an important part of the local fishing industry. The house started life as a fish meal factory but along with the renovation of the entire area, it was transformed into a cultural centre in 2017. Characterised by large windows and a linear procession of beams and columns in twentieth-century industrial style (as well as an eye-catching concrete staircase), the space consists of four independently-operated art spaces: The Living Art Museum, a non-profit museum founded by artists in the 70s; Kling & Bang, an artist-run gallery space; Þula, a newer gallery focusing on emerging artists; and i8 Grandi, the second space of i8 Gallery, a long-standing contemporary art gallery founded in 1995—single artist shows here last a whole year. On the top floor of the building is the private studio of the award-winning eponymous Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, whose designs were used in the Harpa Concert Hall, and many of his works can be seen on the ground floor of the Marshall House, where visitors can also grab a coffee or lunch at La Primavera restaurant.
