The Broadway sensation Wicked will welcome new cast members to the National Tour beginning performances Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at the  Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts  in Orlando, FL.

Biographies

Timothy Shew  (The Wizard) is new to the Wicked family.  On Broadway, he was in the original company of  Les Misérables , and played Jean Valjean for six years both on Broadway and in Australia. Timothy has had numerous leading and/or featured roles in Funny Girl ,  The Visit ,  Evita ,  Bye Bye Birdie ,  Wonderful Town ,  The Scarlet Pimpernel ,  Sunset Boulevard  and  Guys and Doll .  On tour, he has appeared in  The Light in the Piazza  and  Hello, Dolly!  Timothy was a soloist for the Grammy-nominated Bernstein  Mass Project at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and The Vatican. He has had guest starring or recurring roles in “Madame Secretary,” “Law & Order: SVU,” “FBI: Most Wanted” and “Ryan’s Hope.”

Boise Holmes (Doctor Dillamond) is a Los Angeles actor, singer, writer, voiceover artist and licensed minister. His Broadway and National Tour credits include Tonton in Once on This Island  and Mufasa in Disney’s  The Lion King (Germany). Boise can be seen and heard on television and radio as Exxon Mobil’s “Mr. Supremium.”  Some of his television credits include “NCIS,” “Law & Order,” “Chicago Fire,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Blackish.” Boise is a NAACP/Ovation Award winner.

Tara Kostmayer will be joining the National Tour of Wicked as Nessarose, after recently touring in Disney’s Aladdin . Off-Broadway, she was in the NYCC Encores! production of A Chorus Line . Tara has also appeared in Chicago  (The MUNY),  Pride and Prejudice  (TheatreWorks Silicon Valley) and  Ojo  (La Jolla Playhouse).

Kyle McArthur  (Boq) is thrilled to be joining his first National Tour. He originated the role of Simon in the Off-Broadway musical  Superhero at Second Stage and the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center. His television credits include Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” as Brian Koenig and HBO’s “The Deuce.”

Christian Thompson  is living out his childhood dream by joining Wicked and playing Fiyero. Originally from Ft. Lauderdale, he has appeared in Thoughts of a Colored Man ,  Ain’t Too Proud  (Original Broadway Company and First National Tour), and toured in the  Rent  20 th  Anniversary Tour (Benny and Roger understudy). His Regional credits include the world premiere of  The Devil Wears Prada  and  Catch Me If You Can  at Arena Stage

They join a cast which currently includes  Lissa deGuzman  as Elphaba,  Jennafer Newberry  as Glinda,  Natalie Venetia Belcon  as Madame Morrible, with Emily Kristen Morris, Alexia Acebo, Jennifer Mariela Bermeo, Remmie Bourgeois, Kyle Brown, Anthony Lee Bryant, Matt Densky, Marie Eife, Jenny Florkowski, Sara Gonzales, Chelsea Cree Groen, Courtney Iventosch, Kelly Lafarga, Marina Lazzaretto, Ryan Mac, Brittany Marcell Monachino, David Scott Purdy, Jackie Raye, Andy Richardson, Jenna Nicole Schoen, Derek Schiesel, Wayne Schroder, Paul Schwensen, Ben Susak, Brion Marquis Watson and Justin Wirick.

Currently the 5th longest-running show in Broadway history,  Wicked is the winner of over 100 international awards including the Grammy Award and three Tony Awards.  Since opening in 2003, Wicked has been performed in over 100 cities in 16 countries around the world (U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Japan, Germany, Holland, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, The Philippines, Mexico, Brazil, Switzerland and China) and has thus far been translated into six languages: Japanese, German, Dutch, Spanish, Korean and Portuguese. A limited number of $59 Rush tickets will be available for every performance, except performances between 12/26 and 12/31, at the Kennedy Center Box Office beginning at noon for matinee performances and 5:00pm for evening performances. Traffic and Parking

There will be increased traffic and the ramp is expected to fill for WICKED performances.

Once the ramp reaches capacity, parking staff will direct you to the nearest available parking lot which is a short walk to Wharton Center. We recommend arriving up to an hour prior to performances to take advantage of parking in this immediate area.

Run Time, Age, and Special Effects

Run time is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Recommended for ages 8 and up.

This performance will include strobe lighting effects used 55 minutes & 65 minutes into Act One and 25 minutes into Act Two.

Accessibility

Sign Language Interpretation & Audio Description

These services are available for the first Sunday matinee of Broadway performances when requested a minimum of four weeks in advance.

WICKED is coming to West Palm Beach for a limited two-week engagement.   Broadway’s most popular musical will play at the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts from March 29 to April 9, 2023.

Wicked On Tour

Wicked the musical is going on tour in 2023/24 and official tickets for all ten venues across the UK and Ireland are available here and selling fast! The spectacular, multi-record-breaking and critically acclaimed touring production will open at the Edinburgh Playhouse in December 2023 and travel to Bristol, Birmingham, Bradford, Southampton, Liverpool, Dublin, Sunderland, Cardiff and Manchester, where it will conclude at the Palace Theatre for Christmas 2024/5.

 The incredible cast of 33, led by Laura Pick and Sarah O’Connor as Elphaba and Glinda, will form part of the 100+ company delivering all the spectacle and magic of this critically acclaimed, award-winning touring production at every performance.

From the release date to the official trailer, here's everything to know about the Wicked movie adaptation

Wicked is coming to life on the big screen.

Universal's film adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway musical ⁠— which is based on the 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire ⁠— was first announced back in 2016 . Since then, we've slowly gotten more details about the production.

In November 2021, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were cast as the leads , Elphaba and Glinda, respectively. In April 2022, director Jon M. Chu teased more details about the project, including that it would now be released in two parts .

Not wanting to cut down on too many musical numbers and important characters, Chu explained that the creative team decided to give themselves "a bigger canvas" by splitting the adaptation into two separate movies. "With more space, we can tell the story of WICKED as it was meant to be told," he continued.

As more details about the film are announced, read ahead for everything we know.

Who is in the Wicked movie cast?

Erivo and Grande were the first actors attached to the project.

Following their casting announcements, Kristin Chenoweth , who originated the role of Glinda in Broadway's Wicked , gave Grande and Erivo her seal of approval .

"I'm not sure if I've ever been this proud. From the very first day I met you ... you were destined for this role. Congratulations @arianagrande!" Chenoweth wrote on Instagram . "The best Glinda you will be with @cynthiaerivo by your side 💗💚 I love you!! 🧚‍♀️👑🪄 @wickedmovie @wicked_musical #wicked."

Idina Menzel , who originated the role of Elphaba on Broadway, also showed love for Erivo and Grande , writing, "Congrats to two amazing women. May it change your lives for the better forever and ever as it has for us. So much love."

In September 2022, Chu confirmed that Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey is joining the cast as Fiyero, the main love interest in the musical. "He's perfect, they're perfect," the director wrote. "They'd be perfect together. Born to be forever….. I am too excited to pretend this hasn't been happening. We have a Fiyero!!!! #JonathanBailey #Wicked"

In October 2022, Variety reported that Jeff Goldblum was in final talks to play the Wizard, and in December 2022, they reported that Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh was in talks to play Madame Morrible . During a March 2023 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live , Goldblum confirmed his role as the Wizard , teasing that Grande and Erivo are "very good" in their roles.

In May 2023, Yeoh confirmed her casting in Wicked while at a film festival in Fukuoka, Japan. "I'm trying something new right now, filming John Chu's Wicked movie, which will be my first musical," she said.

Yeoh added that the project is "very exciting" and said that agreeing to do the film "was a risk, but you will never know which doors will open for you unless you try them all."

The cast also includes SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical star Ethan Slater as Boq , Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Bowen Yang as Pfannee, Bronwyn James as ShenShen, Keala Settle as Miss Coddle, Aaron Teoh as Avaric and Colin Michael Carmichael as Professor Nikidik, per Variety .

In April 2024, it was announced that Peter Dinklage would be playing Dr. Dillamond, a goat who is a professor of history at Shiz University.

Who is directing the Wicked movie?

Tony-award winner Stephen Daldry was originally supposed to direct, but he officially exited the production in October 2020.

Jon M. Chu — the mastermind behind Crazy Rich Asians and the film adaptation of Broadway's In the Heights — was later tapped to helm the film in February 2021.

Additionally, a handful of people from the original Broadway musical will be returning for the film . Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, who co-wrote the music and lyrics to the Broadway show, are adapting the screenplay, while Marc Platt will return as a producer.

How will the Wicked movie be different from the musical?

On the 2022 SAG Awards red carpet, Erivo revealed that the movie adaptation of Wicked will be slightly different from the original.

"I think it's going to be unlike anything you've ever seen before," she told Entertainment Tonight . "I think we're going to enjoy the magic of it. We're going to try and put our own spin on what we know already and show you a story about two women [who] are sisters."

Will there be new music in the Wicked movie?

Schwartz previously shared that the movie will also include new music .

"I can tell you that at least as of now there will be probably four new songs in the movie," he said back in 2016, according to Playbill . He also noted that three of those songs are newly written, while the other was cut from the Broadway production.

In July 2022, Schwartz shared a photo of himself, music director Stephen Oremus, and actors Troy Iwata, Marissa Rosen, and Wendi Bergamini from a recent demo recording session for the movie on his online fan newsletter The Schwartz Scene .

When did the Wicked movie film?

During Erivo's conversation with ET , she revealed that she and Grande would go into rehearsals for the film in July 2022. In October 2022, Grande insinuated that filming would be kicking off soon as she debuted her blonde hair for the role . In December 2022, Chu confirmed that filming had begun .

Amid the SAG strike in July, there were reports that production has shut down after the Buckinghamshire village that Universal transformed into the set was photographed completely empty.

Chu later confirmed filming has been paused on his Instagram Story, noting that were "only a few days" from being done with filming before the SAG strike halted production.

Filming reportedly finished in January 2024.

Is there a trailer for the Wicked movie?

In April 2023, Chu shared two stills from the upcoming two-part film adaptation, showcasing Grande and Erivo in character as Glinda and Elphaba, respectively.

"You weren't told the whole story. What happens when you veer off the Yellow Brick Road? FIRST LOOK of the #WickedMovie … currently in production in Oz. 🌪️🫧🧹" Chu captioned the post.

During the 2024 Super Bowl, a teaser trailer was released , giving viewers the first look at Elphaba and Glinda in action as well as the dazzling first glimpse of Oz.

In May 2024, the full trailer for Wicked was released which gives a bigger glimpse of the extravagant sets, stunning costumes and iconic performances. In addition to hearing Erivo belt "Defying Gravity," viewers also get the first glimpse of Grande's rendition of "Popular."

When is the Wicked movie being released?

The film will be split into two parts, with part 1 releasing in 2024 and part releasing the next year. The film was originally slated to be released on Dec. 22, 2021 , but due to COVID-19-related production delays, the release was pushed back. In Chu's statement from April 2022, he teased that the Wicked films would be released "on successive Christmas holidays beginning December 2024 ."

In March 2023, Grande revealed that the film's release was moved up a month as she shared a black and green image that read: "Wicked. November 27, 2024." Part 2 is slated to release on Nov. 26, 2025.

The Ain't Too Proud and Devil Wears Prada star will be the U.S. tour's new Fiyero beginning in February.

Ain't Too Proud and  Devil Wears Prada star Christian Thompson will dance through life as the newest Fiyero in the national tour of  Wicked , joining the company beginning February 7 at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Orlando, Florida.

Thompson will join alongside fellow new cast members Timothy Shew ( Les Misérables ) as The Wizard, Boise Holmes ( Once On This Island ) as Doctor Dillamond, Tara Kostmayer ( Aladdin ) as Nessarose, and Kyle McArthur ( Superhero ) as Boq.

The touring cast currently features Lissa deGuzman as Elphaba,   Jennafer Newberry as Glinda, Natalie Venetia Belcon as Madame Morrible,  John Bolton as The Wizard,  Michael Genet as Doctor Dillamond, Kimberly Immanuel as Nessarose, Jordan Litz as Fiyero, and Jake Pedersen as Boq.

Everything We Know About Wicked , If You Dare to Find Out

Good news! She’s deaaaaaaaad actually alive. Over a decade after the production team on the freakishly successful Broadway musical began meeting with filmmakers back in 2010 , a Wicked movie is actually being released in 2024. While those early meetings reportedly included potential directors like Rob Marshall (boring!), Ryan Murphy (but he would want Lea Michele ), and J.J. Abrams (the sci-fi boy?), Stephen Daldry was officially hired, with a December 2019 release date set back in 2016 . Obviously, this did not occur. Cats got that release date instead, and that went great . Then, Jon M. Chu of Crazy Rich Asians , Step Up 2: The Streets , and In the Heights fame took over as director in 2021. Since then, the film has been positively dancing through life, releasing a full trailer May 15. Below, everything you need to know about these soon-to-be-popular movies, coming out in 2024 and 2025.

The trailer is positively wicked …

… For not showing a single sung-through scene. We get to see Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba and Ariana Grande’s Galinda (pre-name change) become roommates and frenemies, but how are we supposed to know they hate each other without a rousing introductory song that rivals Kendrick Lamar levels of disdain? We’ll just have to settle for the infamous “Defying Gravity” riff (Erivo’s version) as Elphaba fulfills her destiny to meet the Wizard in Emerald City. “Something bad is happening in Oz,” the witch portends. Don’t you mean “wicked?”

Wait, movies, as in plural?

Yeah, films . After years of no Wicked movie, we’re getting two Wicked movies. Wickeds ? Wicki ? Wickeople ? “As we prepared this production over the last year, it became increasingly clear that it would be impossible to wrestle the story of WICKED into a single film without doing some real damage to it,” Chu said in a statement posted to social media on April 26, 2022. “So we decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one WICKED movie but TWO!!!!” Okay, so … why? “We found it very difficult to get past ‘Defying Gravity’ without a break,” Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz said in an email newsletter in June of 2022 . “That song is written specifically to bring a curtain down, and whatever scene to follow it without a break just seemed hugely anti-climactic.” Plus, it was going to be very long, and “it required us cutting or omitting things that we wanted to include and that we think fans of the show and the story will appreciate.” Look, if it means that the Act Two opener “No One Mourns the Wicked (Reprise)” will actually get a track after it was tacked onto “Thank Goodness” in the original cast recording, then we will take it! Or, as Ben Affleck, king of Boston, would say: That would be wicked.

Who’s in the cast?

Well, here’s the goooood newwwwwsss. Our “Dear Old Shiz” alumni will be played by Tony winner Cynthia Erivo and Grammy winner and theater-geek-at-large Ariana Grande, playing Elphaba and Glinda (formerly Galinda), respectively. Also in the cast are Bridgerton star and Olivier Award winner Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero and Tony nominee Ethan Slater as Boq. Michelle Yeoh will be the film’s Madame Morrible. Marissa Bode will be playing Elphaba’s sister Nessarose, a notable departure from the stage version, as Bode is a person with a disability. The Broadway version of the show has solely cast non-disabled actors for the wheelchair-bound role. SNL star and Emmy nominee Bowen Yang will play Pfannee, one of Galinda’s friends, alongside Bronwyn James as ShenShen. Tony nominee Keala Settle, Aaron Teoh, and Colin Michael Carmichael are playing Miss Coddle, Avaric, and Nikidik, respectively. Jeff Goldblum is set to play the Wizard. Until recently Dr. Dillamond, adult goat and singer of “Something Bad,” was without an actor. Instead, the role is currently being played by a puppeteer, Yang revealed on an episode of Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen . The puppeteer (named Louisa) “has been doing amazing line reads,” according to Yang. After much speculation , the GOAT goat was revealed to be Peter Dinklage . Moving forward, we must say to Mr. Jon M. Chu that, as long as you stay away from casting the enemy of restaurateurs , we’re happy.

What does it look like?

You don’t need to have a vision almost like a prophecy to see what the Wicked movie is going to look like. Instead, we have a few first look images to choose from that can foretell all kinds of different looks for the film, depending on what you want to see. The most official of the group were a set of character pics tweeted out by Chu, showing Elphaba and Galinda with shrouded backdrops. Some people on Twitter made fun of these pics for the cinematography being too dark , but Chu himself responded, saying , “Don’t worry, color is in my DNA … this is just the first tease. Plenty of time to show more … stay tuned.”

Other on-set shots already look, to quote a different former Chenoweth vehicle, a whole lot brighter . Shots from the set that weren’t technically released through official sources show brightly colored sets and a pretty-in-pink Ari walking through Munchkinland. This even included a video shared by Entertainment Tonight, in which you can see and hear a ponytail-less Grande in full pink getup singing her high notes from the opening song. What the cinematography will look like, no one can say. But it would be a shame not to show off the vibrant colors they’ve got going on.

When’s the release date?

Originally, both films were going to be released on Christmas Days. However, Chu tweeted out on March 14 that the first film is defying gravity, because the release date was actually moved up . “We are deep into production on WICKED and everyday we get more and more excited to share with u the mischief we’ve been up to,” the director said. “So … We’ve decided to get it to you all a little earlier than planned. OUR NEW RELEASE Date is NOV 27th 2024! A little Thanksgiving treat!” The second film was originally scheduled for release on Christmas 2025, but now it’s being bumped up. On June 20, Warner Bros. revealed that, in line with the first film, the sequel will be out over Thanksgiving 2025 (specifically, November 26), according to The Hollywood Reporter . That’s less than two short years before we get a Wicked film, and we might as well start yelling about it now. AAAAAAAAH!

One of Broadway’s most beloved musicals is finally getting the Hollywood treatment.

Universal is set to adapt Wicked , the Tony Award–winning Stephen Schwartz musical based on Gregory Maguire 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West , which offers an alternative perspective on the events of The Wizard of Oz , through the eyes of the witch, Elphaba. The first-ever teaser trailer for Wicked premiered during Super Bowl LVIII . The nearly minute-long clip gives us glimpses of the magical world of Oz, as well as a brief look at Erivo’s and Grande’s performances as Elphaba and Glinda.

The movie musical will be split into two separate films, hitting theaters in 2024 and 2025.

In April 2022, Chu announced that the Wicked adaptation will be split into two separate movies. The first will premiere on November 27, 2024, and the second will be released on November 26, 2025.

“As we prepared this production over the last year, it became increasingly clear that it would be impossible to wrestle the story of Wicked into a single film without doing some real damage to it,” Chu wrote in a statement posted to Twitter. “As we tried to cut songs or trim characters, those decisions began to feel like fatal compromises to the source material that has entertained us all for so many years. So we decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one Wicked movie but TWO!!!”

The director added that he, the cast, and the crew are all committed to creating “nothing less than an experience that honors its foundations for all the fans who’ve waited for this movie, and to offer a thrilling, fantastical world full of dynamic characters that invites in those who are unfamiliar.”

In March 2023, he confirmed the release date for the first film on Twitter.

“We are deep into production on WICKED and everyday we get more and more excited to share with u the mischief we’ve been up to. So…We’ve decided to get it to you all a little earlier than planned,” he wrote to fans. “Our new release date is November 27th 2024! A little Thanksgiving treat!”

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have been cast as the leads.

Actor Erivo and pop star Grande will play the musical’s frenemy protagonists, Elphaba (otherwise known as the Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda (the Good Witch). Their casting was announced in November 2021.

Erivo and Grande are taking over roles made famous by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, who originated the characters in the Broadway production.

Erivo has an extensive and successful background in musical theater, having won the 2016 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for the Broadway revival of The Color Purple , in which she played Celie Harris Johnson.

And prior to her pop career, Grande also dabbled in musical theater. She previously starred in the 2008 Broadway production of the musical 13 .

Jon M. Chu will direct the films.

Chu has some experience adapting beloved Broadway musicals for the big screen. He was previously charged with helming the In the Heights adaptation, which premiered in June 2021. He also directed the 2018 rom-com Crazy Rich Asians , adapted from the 2013 novel by Kevin Kwan.

“What really has hit me is the power of music and why musicals exist in the first place when words aren’t sufficient,” the director told Collider in June 2021. “Nowadays, words really aren’t sufficient for what we’re going through. So for me, it’s finding the truth of each song and working our way inside out of why that exists.”

Jonathan Bailey will play Fiyero.

Chu confirmed on Twitter in September 2022 that the Bridgerton star will take on the lead love-interest role in the Wicked movies.

“He’s perfect, they’re perfect. They’d be perfect together. Born to be forever,” Chu wrote. “I am too excited to pretend this hasn’t been happening. We have a Fiyero!!!!”

Bailey is best known for his performance as Anthony Bridgerton in Netflix’s beloved period romance series .

We’ve gotten our first looks at Elphaba and Glinda.

On Twitter in April 2023, the director released the first-ever images of Erivo and Grande in full costume as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively. One shows Erivo in the all-black costume and full green makeup, looking away from camera as she stands in a clock tower clutching a broom. Meanwhile, Grande wears a pink princess gown as she climbs a tall staircase, presumably in the same tower.

In response to a fan’s comment that the images are noticeably dark, Chu wrote, “Don’t worry, color is in my DNA… this is just the first tease. Plenty of time to show more… stay tuned.”

Ariana Grande says portraying Glinda is an experience that will stay with her “forever.”

In an April 2023 update shared on Instagram, Ariana Grande said Wicked was halfway finished with filming and penned a poetic ode to the role she had dedicated the previous year to.

“Savoring every millisecond left with my Galinda (although she’ll be with me irrevocably, forever). she shows me so many new things every day. I am so grateful, I don’t know what to do or say… to be here in Oz where everyday is a life changing one… to be feeling, learning and growing so much at such a disarming speed… to feel so much love around me, to begin each day before the sun is up and to end after it sets,” she wrote. “To hold my brilliant twin flame / sister Cynthia’s beautiful, green hands every day… to work in the safest, most beautiful and loving, biggest-yet-most-intimate/tiny-feeling spaces…”

The singer also shared a photo with Erivo in March 2023, simply captioning the black-and-white image “up to (no) good 🫧 🧹.”

Michelle Yeoh will play Madame Morrible.

The Everything Everywhere All at Once star has joined the Wicked cast to play Madame Morrible, headmistress of Crage Hall at Shiz University, Variety reported in December 2022. In the musical and the book, Madame Morrible acts as a devoted follower of the Wizard.

The movies will look different from the musical.

In a February 2022 interview with Entertainment Tonight , Erivo explained why fans shouldn’t expect a 100 percent faithful adaptation of the musical.

“I think it’s going to be unlike anything you’ve ever seen before,” she said. “I think we’re going to enjoy the magic of it. We’re going to try and put our own spin on what we know already and show you a story about two women [who] are sisters.”

Stephen Schwartz, who composed the show’s original music and is returning for the movies, also teased new Wicked music.

“I can tell you that at least as of now there will be probably four new songs in the movie,” he told Playbill in 2016.

Grande shared a behind-the-scenes look at her transformation into Glinda.

In October 2022, Grande teased her blonde transformation into the Good Witch on Instagram.

Sharing a photo of herself in profile, the “Positions” singer sported honey-blonde locks, which she pulled up into her signature high ponytail.

“New earrings,” she casually captioned the photo.

Wicked is gearing up to be the movie event of the year, and its arrival has been a long time in the making. The film—an adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name, which was adapted from a 1995 novel by Gregory Macguire—had murmurs of hitting the big screen ever since its Broadway production starring Idina Menzel (Elphaba) and Kristin Chenoweth (Galinda the Good Witch) earned critical acclaim following its 2003 debut.

Now, 20 years later, and following a major stall in production due to the coronavirus pandemic, Wicked is officially hitting theaters this year and has a stacked cast consisting of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande (in her first major feature-length role) as the new Elphaba and Galinda, respectively. 

Wicked was originally slated to be directed by Stephen Daldry ( Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close , Billy Elliott the Musical Live , The Reader ), but after dropping out from the project in October of 2020, Jon M. Chu—whose credits include Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights, Crazy Rich Asians, Step Up 2 and Step Up 3, and two Justin Bieber concert films—signed onto the project. Stephen Schwartz, who wrote songs in the original musical, is working on the movie alongside Winnie Holzman, writer of the musical book, and Marc Platt, the original Broadway musical producer for Wicked .

Ahead of the film’s arrival, here’s everything you need to know about the Wicked movies. (Yes, plural—more on that later.)

The first teaser for Wicked dropped with a commercial spot during Super Bowl LVIII and the official trailer was released on May 15, 2024.

'Wicked' Movie Release Date

The first of the two Wicked films will be released on November 27, 2024 (the film was originally scheduled for a December 2024 release). The second of the Wicked movies will premiere on November 26, 2025.

'Wicked' Movie Synopsis

Wicked serves double duty by acting as a prequel to The Wizard of Oz and explains how Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Galinda (who eventually changes her name to Galinda) interacted with each other during their school days at Shiz University. The women start off as roommates who hate each other and later develop a friendship that devolves into them becoming political enemies when the Wizard brings Elphaba down in order to and boost alinda's power within the community. 

How Many 'Wicked' Movies Are There?

Since the magic of Wicked cannot be contained in just one film, Chu revealed in April of 2022 that the story will be split into two—a decision that he said came from wanting to maintain the integrity of the story. 

“As we prepared the production over the last year, it became impossible to wrestle the story of Wicked into a single film without doing some real damage to it," Chu shared in a statement written from his “OzPhone” and posted to X. "As we tried to cut songs or trim characters, those decisions began to feel like fatal compromises to the source material that has entertained us all for so many years. We decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one Wicked movie but two! With more space, we can tell the story of Wicked as it was meant to be told while bringing even more depth and surprise to the journeys for these beloved characters."

While it's unclear what will extend the movie into requiring a second part, Schwartz did reveal back in 2016 (during the movie’s development stage) that new songs were added to the script. “I can tell you that at least as of now there will probably be four new songs in the movie,” he said during his Comic-Con appearance that year. Playbill further added that of those four songs, three were entirely new, with one that was previously cut from the Broadway play.

The 'Wicked' Cast

You know him, and chances are you’ve swooned over him as Anthony Bridgerton—Johnathan Bailey will take on the role of Fiyero, and will be using his Bridgerton acting chops to sweep both Elphaba and Galinda off their feet in the movie.

Michelle Yeoh ( Everything Everywhere All At Once , Crazy Rich Asians ) is set to play Madame Morrible, and will serve as the headmistress of Shiz University who also serves as the Wizard’s advisor. Yeoh revealed that upon taking the role, she might have been putting herself at a disadvantage for receiving dramatic work in the future, despite working with Chu on the critically acclaimed 2018 film Crazy Rich Asians .

"I'm trying something new right now — filming Jon Chu's Wicked movie, which will be my first musical," she told Entertainment Weekly in May 2023. "It's very exciting, and I can't wait for you all to see it. It was a risk, but you will never know which doors will open for you unless you try them all."

Jeff Goldblum will star as the Wizard, and while he seems to enjoy his time on the project, he revealed that working on Wicked has brought up a childhood fear of his. 

“I was shooting one day and I found myself tearing up in fear. A childhood fear came back to me and I told Cynthia Erivo, I said, 'You know, I'm remembering my first dream that I ever had,'" he said during a March 2023 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! "My first dream was that I was tied to a tree stump and a witch—because I'd seen Snow White , also with a very scary queen witch—had tied me to this tree stump and I thought was going to chop off my head … I must've been four or something like that, and she went, 'peaches, peaches.'"

Elsewhere in the interview, Goldblum revealed that he and his children can’t get through the original 1939 version of The Wizard of Oz, because it’s too scary.

Other members of the cast include:

• Marissa Bode, who will play Elphaba’s sister Nessarose (Nessa) and uses a wheelchair like her character in the movie
• Ethan Slater, known for playing SpongeBob in SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical, who will play Nessa’s munchkin boyfriend, Boq 
• Bowen Yang of Saturday Night Live, who will take on the smaller role of Pfannee, Elphaba and Galinda’s classmate at university
• Bronwyn James and Aaron Teoh, who will both play students at Shiz University
• Keala Settle ( The Greatest Showman ) and Colin Michael Carmichael ( Hot Fuzz ), who will play Miss Coddle and Professor Nikidik, respectively 
• Adam James ( I May Destroy You ), who will also take on the newly added role of Galinda's father
