Rage Against the Machine and Hip-Hop Greats Ignite New York Crowd at Rock the Bells

By Andy Greene and Will Hunt

Andy Greene and Will Hunt

Shirtless white-male aggression reared its dangerously burned chest at this past weekend’s Rock the Bells festival in numbers not seen since Woodstock 1999 went up in flames. The show was ostensibly a two-day hip-hop event, but most of the overwhelmingly white audience seemed to regard Saturday’s show as a Rage Against the Machine concert with lots of opening acts. Judging by the license plates, the 35,000 fans came from far and wide to check out the group’s second concert since splitting up seven years ago.

“We are Rage Against the Machine from Los Angeles, California,” Zack de la Rocha roared as his group took the stage and tore into their 1999 single “Testify.” Rage broke up less than a month before Bush stole the 2000 election and thus nearly every word de la Rocha performed was written before the unending nightmare of the past seven years. They’ve never sounded more relevant or necessary. The only lyrical alteration was a new line in “Killing in the Name”: “Some of them that bore crosses are the same that hold office.”

The show was nearly identical to their last tour behind The Battles of Los Angeles . Highlights included an incendiary “Guerilla Radio,” a sing-along “Sleep Now in the Fire” and a show-closing “Killing in the Name” that had every single person on Randalls Island raising their middle fingers and screaming, “Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me” at the top of their lungs. Tom Morello’s day job as the wrong-writing acoustic troubadour the Nightwatchman has done little to temper his thunderous guitar playing, and Zack de la Rocha’s seven years’ hibernation has only made his flow sharper and his anger more palpable.

At the completion of each song everyone waited for de la Rocha to address the audience and say something to rival his famous Coachalla rant in which he said that Bush “should be hung, and tried and shot.” At the end of “Bullet in the Head,” he finally opened his mouth. He began by saying he was misquoted at Coachella and that the president should be “tried like a war criminal and then hung and shot.” He went on to say that the only way to end the war is for everyone to “rise up like the youth in Iraq and bring these fuckers to their knees.” Most of the audience roared their approval, while others had expressions on their faces that seemed to ask “What exactly is he advocating?”

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

If Audioslave seemed irrelevant when they started, they now seem like an asterisk next to Rage’s name in the Rock and Roll Dictionary. Hopefully the oldies show Rage is doing this summer will pave the way for a new album. They weren’t here in the years we needed them most, but Bush does still has a year and a half in office. Better late than never.

The rest of the two-day festival was devoted to indie and mainstream hip-hop. VH1 regular and Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian joined Public Enemy on the main stage, where Chuck D sprinted around and rhymed urgently to tracks like “Bring the Noise” and “Welcome to the Terrordome” with Flavor Flav at his side. The Wu-Tang Clan battled sound problems while tearing through their set and honoring lost member Ol’ Dirty Bastard (a banner reading RIP ODB hung in the corner of the stage). Though the Wu seemed a little disjointed and low-energy mid-set, as soon as they brought everyone together for a “this one’s for ODB” rendition of the late rapper’s “Shimmy Shimmy Ya,” they were on fire. Method Man crowd surfed and struck a Jesus pose, standing upright and walking across the sea of hands, rocketing the crowd into a frenzy.

Main stage acts like Mos Def and Talib Kweli kept the crowd’s energy up with hits like “The Blast” and “Get By,” while old-school pioneer Rakim made his presence known with booming tracks off Master and Seventh Seal . Cypress Hill jumped around looking young and vibrant with a twenty-foot-tall golden Buddha behind them (and, of course, a pot leaf). B-Real, who according to DJ Muggs is “the highest man in the world,” held it down with all the expected classics and announced the group will have a new joint out next year.

Trump Hoped 'My Juror' Would Save Him From Conviction

Bad boy for life: sean combs’ history of violence, eminem attempts to make his career disappear with new song 'houdini', abba reunite to receive one of sweden's highest honors.

At the smaller Paid Dues stage, Murs, Brother Ali and Sage Francis garnered substantial crowds despite the pouring rain on Sunday (concert-goers in garbage bags were a common sight). Atmosphere’s Slug and Ant joined Murs as the trio known as Felt and easily had the crowd laughing and bouncing. The star of the second stage, though, was clearly MF Doom, who arrived in his trademark silver super-villain mask, a green Mets jersey and very mysterious pants that looked like they’d been made out of tree leaves. The set started and the crowd — packed with a diverse group of indie kids and hard-core hip-hop heads — immediately fell under the spell of his lazy, smoky voice and those eerie, hypnotic space-beats. It was almost mesmerizing enough to distract everyone from the bad weather, which truly didn’t dampen this tireless fest.

Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA Takes Us Back to 1997

Wu-Tang Clan rock the bells. Photo: Getty Images

In defiance of all standard hip-hop show protocol, the second date of 2007’s Rock the Bells tour went off without a hitch Saturday on Randall’s Island. Just some of the day’s amuses-bouches : a spirited Public Enemy appearance, complete with sword-thrusting SW1 soldier-dancers; a tuba-centric Roots performance; a bong-centric Cypress Hill one. And the main course: all eight living members of Wu-Tang Clan (even if GZA missed the first few songs), and a combustible set, only the second, from a recently reunited Rage Against the Machine.

We spoke to Wu-Tang leader RZA before he hit the stage.

What’s up with the new Wu-Tang album, 8 Diagrams ? 8 diagrams , yep. It’s coming soon. Right now it’s ready for an October release. October 23.

What are your expectations for the album? Are you hoping it’ll be like the nineties all over again? I ain’t got no expectations because, yo, in those days, we was doing it for a different reason. We were definitely trying to express hip-hop in a different way, but at the same time, we had to eat. Shit had to get real. I’ll use a 50 Cent quote — it was like, get rich or die trying. It was like that in our lives. But this time, this is for the people. We recorded this album without one dollar deposited into our bank accounts before we started.

Will Wu-Tang tour for this record? Well, we rocking right now, so we just gonna continue rocking. We ain’t even throwing fishes no hooks in the water right now. We on the boat, and fishes jumping into the boat! [ Laughs. ] We on the boat, dog.

The last time you guys played with Rage there was some trouble… What trouble?!

In ’97, when you guys toured with Rage… Oh, we ended the shows, yeah. Cause n—– wasn’t showing for the tour! [ Laughs .] It was us, missing the flights, being late. N—– was just enjoying life. N—– had some cheese in the pocket, n—– was living it up. N—– was Eddie Kane, we had four Eddie Kanes in the group at that time.

So what’s it like now? Everyone’s all grown up? Yeah, we’re all here. We probably look close to the same way [that we did in 1997]. We actually are in 1997. When we put out “Triumph,” what did Dirty say? Lets take it back to ’79. We took it back, know what I mean? Now we caught up. — Amos Barshad

support None author DY date 18/08/07 venue Rock The Bells Festival, San Francisco, USA

The stage; Rock The Bells hip-hop festival. The location; a parking lot sitting behind the Giants' ballpark in San Francisco, California. Yes this was the setting for one of the most eagerly anticipated and memorable concerts to date for this reviewer. Until now, seeing the mighty Rage Against The Machine live in concert was something I could have only dreamt about, so when the band's headlining slot on the four-date festival coincided with my travels in the US, it was an opportunity I could not pass up. So on a gorgeous August night in San Francisco by the bay, I arrived at the venue in time to catch the end of Cypress Hill's set and a few other lesser known hip-hop acts performing on various stages across the parking lot. I found my spot in the main stage crowd at the start of the Wu Tang Clan's set, which was a necessary forfeit to have to pay in order to get a good position and view of the stage for the headliners.

rock the bells tour rage against the machine

During the set the crowd's attentions were temporarily distracted by some drunk guy who had decided to climb up the 40ft steel scaffolding supporting various lights and cameras. He was soon followed by about 5 security guards who eventually managed to drag him down despite the crowds pleas of "up, up, up!".

rock the bells tour rage against the machine

Overall, the concert was everything I expected and hoped it would be. A faultless performance from a band who is just as on form now as they have ever been, and for a band that hasn't played together in 7 years, thats an impressive feat. The choice of songs was spot on and each one was played with energy and skill. The only detail I would have changed would be the size of the venue, because 99% of the time the smaller venues make the better shows. So it is this which drops the show half a grade below perfect. To be honest, I feel truly privileged to have had the opportunity to witness a live performance from this band and it will stand as a landmark for me in the history of the 65+ concerts that I have attended over the years. I can only say that whenever this band plays a show anywhere near you, i.e. on planet Earth, make the effort and go and see them, you won't regret it. 9½

This Hip-Hop Future Looks Like Yesterday

By Kelefa Sanneh

  • July 30, 2007

Zack De La Rocha is the lead rapper and agitator and sermonizer of Rage Against the Machine, but on Saturday night at Randalls Island he barely talked between songs. Then, near the end of the set, came the speech everyone was anticipating.

On April 29, during this rap-rock band’s reunion concert at the Coachella festival, Mr. De La Rocha gave a speech accusing the Bush administration of war crimes and said, “They should be hung and tried and shot.” (Hmm. In that order?) A clip found its way to the Fox News program “Hannity & Colmes,” which was not overstocked with Rage Against the Machine fans. The on-screen headline read, “Rock grp ‘Rage Against the Machine’ says Bush admin should be shot.”

Sean Hannity seemed to suggest that the Secret Service should be alerted. Ann Coulter, a guest, got in a good quip (“Has anybody checked in with a Flock of Seagulls to see what their position is on Bush?”), then delivered a final verdict, “They’re losers, their fans are losers, and there’s a lot of violence coming from the left wing.”

On Saturday night Mr. De La Rocha responded. He attacked the “fascist” Fox News pundits for “claiming that we said that the president should be assassinated.” As the crowd shouted its approval, he continued, “No: he should be brought to trial as a war criminal and hung and shot. That’s what we said.” Despite the insistence on due process, this still isn’t a position any mainstream politician would endorse. But that’s precisely the point: At a time when unimpeachable causes and pragmatic endorsements are the norm, it’s nice to be reminded that rock stars can get political without sounding like politicians.

The occasion for this brief oration was a traveling hip-hop festival. Two of them, actually: On Saturday night, the nostalgic hip-hop tour Rock the Bells came to town, with a second stage courtesy of the indie-rap tour Paid Dues. (A second show was scheduled for Sunday night; guerillaunion.com has more tour dates.) The rest of the lineup was strictly hip-hop, though most of the rappers shared the kind of rebellious energy that attracts rock fans. Not coincidentally African-Americans were a tiny minority in the crowd; cargo-shorts wearers most certainly were not.

On a bill with Rage Against the Machine everyone else was an opening act. Not that the other rappers went unappreciated. The second-biggest draw was the Wu-Tang Clan, still mourning the 2004 death of O. D. B., and still unspooling weird rhymes for a crowd that remembered when the Clan was an unlikely commercial juggernaut. The set ended with a complete version of “Triumph,” an unwieldy and mesmerizing single from 1997; there’s no refrain, just nine wordy, erudite verses that seem to go on forever.

Although Chang Weisberg, one of the organizers, has called Rock the Bells “a window into the future” of hip-hop culture, on Saturday it seemed more like a time capsule. The bill included some of the self-consciously bohemian rappers who came of age in the 1990s: Mos Def, Talib Kweli, the Roots and Pharaohe Monch. There was also a genial but rather perfunctory set from the veteran Los Angeles act Cypress Hill, and another from Public Enemy, which endures despite some evident personal friction.

“I was in the middle of something, Chuck,” said Flavor Flav, when Chuck D tried to start a song too soon. Did Chuck D wince in response?

The much smaller Paid Dues stage wasn’t for rookies either; it was for veterans of the indie-rap circuit, most of whom know how to work a crowd, no matter the size. Slug, best known as half of the duo Atmosphere, declaimed his lyrics while grinning and gesticulating; Sage Francis did something similar, only with more politics and less grinning.

Murs, the rapper who organizes Paid Dues, performed with Slug and with his own Living Legends crew. None of this seemed like “the future” of hip-hop, but both stages pointed to a possible future for rock-friendly rappers who have outgrown (or never fit) radio: a summer on the road, entertaining the cargo-shorts crowd. There are worse ways to make a living.

As for Rage Against the Machine, who knows how long this reunion will last; the members haven’t committed to anything beyond a series of live dates. During the hiatus the guitarist Tom Morello, the drummer Brad Wilk and the bassist Tim Commerford played together in Audioslave, but on Saturday night they seemed glad to be playing the old songs again. Maybe the break did everybody good, including those of us who aren’t in the band; no doubt the old favorites wouldn’t have sounded as fresh if these guys had been flogging them nonstop since the 1990s.

The formula is simple and elegant: Mr. Commerford gives these songs all the melody and muscle they need, which leaves Mr. Morello free to do as he pleases. Sometimes he amplifies the bass line by doubling it; sometimes he adds scabrous counterrhythms and countermelodies; sometimes he just makes cool noises. (At one point his pings and squiggles blended pleasantly, if ominously, with the sound of an ambulance floating past on the Triborough Bridge.) Meanwhile Mr. De La Rocha stands and squats and paces, simmering during the quiet parts and boiling over during the loud ones.

Fiery indignation suits Mr. De La Rocha, and it suits this band, which even now embodies the leanness and purposefulness of the righteous guerillas in his lyrics. During “Guerilla Radio,” a fan favorite, the crowd changed along with Mr. De La Rocha: “What better place than here? What better time than now?” Or, in this case, later.

Rage Against The Machine Reunite For Rock The Bells

After Rage Against The Machine broke up in 2000 and 3 of its members soon forming Audioslave with Chris Cornell, Rage lead Zack de la Rocha was supposed to drop a hip hop based solo album. Seven years later and we’ve still got no album, but we do have a Rage reunion tour and a potential reunion for an album with Audioslave just splitting.

After it was recently announced the political rock group would reform for this year’s Coachella, Guerilla Union has upped the ante and locked Rage in to co-headline this summer’s Rock The Bells festivals with the Wu-Tang Clan .

“It’s definitely our fans’ dream billing. It’s a tremendous honor to have Rage Against The Machine and Wu-Tang Clan perform together ,” said event organizer Chang Weisberg . “ I can’t wait to announce the rest of the line-up for Rock the Bells. It’s incredibly important to put some shine on quality Hip Hop. The opportunity to galvanize the social and political consciousness of these groups is undeniable .”

The festivals will once again take place in San Bernardino, CA (8/11) and San Francisco, CA (8/17), and will also make an east coast debut in New York on 7/28.

TOM MORELLO Explains How He Developed His Unique And Creative Guitar Playing Style

Tom Morello 's innovative guitar playing in RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE defied the definition of what a guitar virtuoso should be. Combining guitar tones and effects with unprecedented creativity, Tom spearheaded a fusion of classic rock, punk, and hip-hop unlike anything the world had ever seen, while simultaneously writing era-defining riffs for both RATM and AUDIOSLAVE .

Asked in a new interview with Rolling Stone Germany how he developed his unique approach, Morello said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET ): "For many years, when I was practicing my eight hours a day, I was trying to play like Randy Rhoads and Eddie Van Halen and all of them. And for me, the breakthrough was the toggle switch on the guitar. Now, at the time when I was doing my practicing, the cool guitar was the Eddie Van Halen guitar that only had one knob — volume. And my guitar, which was a Gibson Explorer , was saddled with all of these very unfashionable knobs and switches and things like that. And one day I stumbled upon working the toggle switch with the wah pedal, and all of a sudden the guitar sounded a little bit like a keyboard. And I didn't go, like, 'Oh, eureka, I'm now going to invent some new form of playing.' It felt weird to me and different. So I kind of had that in my back pocket.

"But there was a singular moment in the early history of RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE ," Morello recalled. "We were playing a show with two cover bands, and each of those bands had a shredding guitar player in them, like a really technically proficient player in them, and I thought to myself, 'If we're playing some crappy gig in the San Fernando Valley with two other guys who are doing the same thing I'm trying to do, I'm gonna get off of that hamster wheel.'

"Before, I was practicing eight hours a day scales. After that, I was practicing eight hours a day animal noises and robot sounds and hurricane noises and whatnot," Tom added. "And I really felt that I was finding my own voice on the instrument. For me, it did take those years of amassing some technique in order to finally have the revelation that my own sound was worth pursuing."

Asked if he felt something was missing in rock guitar at a time when he grew up surrounded by shredders like Eddie Van Halen , Yngwie Malmsteen and Steve Vai , Tom said: "Well, the thing that I thought was missing in rock was — it came more from the lyrical and the philosophical content than from the guitar playing. I love those guitar players and I greatly admired them and tried my best to play their solos, but I was also a fan of like GANG OF FOUR and Andy Gill and Allan Holdsworth and people [whose] music sounded very much outside of the stereotypical shredder stuff. And I would look to sort of make an amalgamation of having there be the ability to lean in the technique but not be dependent upon it. But, for me, the revelation was, and one of the reasons why I think that the music I've been involved in is different from other music in a way, is I still have that shredder in me, I still have that gun slinger mentality in me."

He added: "In the '90s, I think there was only one person playing guitar [solos] — me and Mike McCready [ PEARL JAM ], maybe, [were] the only people playing guitar solos in the '90s, because I loved JUDAS PRIEST and IRON MAIDEN and Randy Rhoads and all those guys, but at the same time wanted the guitar to find new pastures to explore."

Tom was the sole member of RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE who attended the band's Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony last November at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE 's Rock Hall induction came after the band appeared on six ballots.

In October 2022, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE canceled its North American tour, three months after singer Zack De La Rocha severed his left Achilles tendon, leaving a mere eight inches of the tendon intact.

RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE 's comeback tour, which was first announced in 2019 and then delayed several times due to the pandemic, marked the first time the reunited rap-metal quartet had hit the road together since 2011.
