The best places to visit in Jaipur showcase the royalty of Rajasthan — and you don't have to walk far to see many of the top attractions. Start by touring City Palace , a nearly 300-year-old palace with special courtyards, structures, gardens, and temples.

Just next door is Jantar Mantar, a centuries-old attraction with giant astronomical instruments commissioned by the founder of the city. A 10-minute walk from here brings you to Hawa Mahal , a red-and-pink sandstone structure. Its distinctive lattice design allowed royal women to get a peek at public life while remaining unseen in the 19th century.

City Palace has stood at the heart of the Old City of Jaipur for nearly three centuries, shortly after Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II decided to relocate his court from the city of Amber. Protected by huge guard walls, the fairy-tale-like structure is still the home of the city's modern-day royal family and endures as one of the top places to visit in Jaipur.

City Palace is more than a sand-colored regal abode — it's a sprawling complex of buildings built around a series of landscaped garden courtyards overlooking Jaipur and Lake Palace. The entire property is a stunning display of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture.

The current occupants reside in the most eye-catching building, the Chandra Mahal , an elegant structure with curved eaves and domed rooftops. Each of its seven stories features an entirely different style. The ground floor is included in the price of admission, but you'll need to book a private tour to go upstairs.

At first glance, Jantar Mantar may look to be nothing more than a bunch of larger-than-life abstract sculptures. But this is not an art gallery — this attraction contains a special collection of astronomical tools started by Rajput ruler Jai Singh II to measure the heavens nearly 300 years ago.

Each of the 20 or so structures at this UNESCO World Heritage Site serves a distinctive purpose. The observatory's massive sundial, known as Samrat Yantra , is particularly striking. At 27 meters tall, it casts a huge shadow that accurately measures time down to two seconds.

The elaborate Jai Prakash also tracks the passing of time, using the shadow of a metal plate suspended above a sunken bowl-like structure. The ingenious Rama Yantra, a circular walled structure, can locate the precise positions of celestial objects. Other tools at the observatory can track stars and even predict eclipses.

If you had any preconceived notions about how the buildings in Jaipur look, they probably came from Hawa Mahal (Palace of Breeze). Jaipur is home to one of India's most-visited forts: Amber Fort. Built in the year 1592, the sandstone and marble monolith stands atop a small hill roughly 20 minute's driving distance northeast of the center of Jaipur. Sources of water can be few and far between in the desert state of Rajasthan. So it's no wonder that when people discovered a natural spring in a mountain pass in the Aravalli Hills , they honored it by building the Hindu temple Galta Ji.

Nestled between cliffs, the temple features a few sacred water tanks, some with modest fountains, as well as frescoes that tell tales about the Hindu god Krishna.

Galta Ji is also one of the best places to visit in Jaipur if you want to see monkeys . It's home to hundreds of macaques and langurs (hence its nickname, "The Monkey Temple"). The jewelry museum in Jaipur features two full floors of glistening jewels and objects from its 4,000-piece collection, showcasing the vast range of Indian craftsmanship.

The displays show just how seriously Rajasthani people take their gold, silver, and precious gems. Among the jewels, you'll see silver bands for horses' legs, a chariot fully covered in silver, embellished shoe covers, and a glorious crown for a groom from Himachal Pradesh.

While these pieces are for display only, there's an extensive range of necklaces, bracelets, and other wearables available for purchase at the Museum Shop.

For much of history, Rajasthan's most important handicrafts and works of art lived in private collections that were unavailable for viewing by the majority of the public. That all changed when the Government of Rajasthan opened the Museum of Legacies in 2017.

Housed in a two-centuries-old mansion, this tourist attraction showcases an assortment of Indian embroidery, giant Rajasthani puppets, Pichwai paintings, and much more.

Don't miss the magnificent marble latticework. The amount of swirling detail the artisans were able to carve from such a strong, hard stone is hypnotic.

One look at the Jal Mahal, and you might think you're seeing a mirage. The graceful palace seems to float atop the twinkling Man Sagar Lake — a calm sight compared to the rest of the frenzied city.

While it appears to have just one story, the Water Palace has four other levels submerged beneath a reservoir. The government no longer allows tourists to visit the site, but you can stroll a pathway around the lake to catch gorgeous views of the attraction. At night, it's lit up in all its glory, casting a golden, glowing reflection on the water.

Jaipur is a mecca for souvenirs. Markets in the Pink City brim with everything from costume jewelry and precious gemstones to embroidered textiles, cobalt blue pottery, and Rajasthani puppets.

For a no-hassle shopping experience, head to the Rajasthali Handicrafts Emporium across from Ajmeri Gate. The government-run shop sells high-quality traditional handicrafts, like blue pottery decorated with yellow flowers, sets of wooden carvings depicting Rajasthani characters, and hand-printed saris. The prices you see on these items are fixed, so while you won't be able to negotiate a discount, you can also avoid the headache of bargaining.

Johari Bazar is a jewelry lover's paradise. The market glitters from top to bottom with dozens of shops selling everything from costume jewelry to fine silver and gold. No matter your budget, you'll find something beautiful to take home from here.

Finally, don't leave Jaipur without a quick shopping trip to Bapu Bazar. Located just a few blocks southwest of Johari Bazaar, the tourist-favorite market is chock full of handcrafted trinkets, locally made textiles, bedazzled slippers, and souvenirs galore.

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the Amber Fort, Jaigarh Fort is one of the best places to visit in Jaipur if you want a remarkable view and up-close access to historical artifacts. It's best known for housing the Jaivana Cannon, which was considered to be the world's largest cannon on wheels when it was built in the early 18th century.

Visiting the attraction gives tourists an appreciation for the fort's role in keeping Jaipur and the surrounding area safe from invaders. Spread over a range of three kilometers, the fort features thick sandstone walls and a series of subterranean passages. It's thought to be the strongest of Jaipur's forts.

Beyond fortified, though, the fort was also an opulent place when it was in use. You can still see its majestic palace complex and intricate architecture on tours today.

Another one of the popular things to do in Amer after visiting the Amber Fort is taking a 10-minute walk south to visit Panna Meena ka Kund, a stepwell that dates back to the 16th century.

Locals used to come to this spot to fill their pots with water for rituals and household chores. It was also the go-to place to cool off from the intense desert heat.

Today, the attraction's primary purpose is as a backdrop for tourist photos — and for good reason. Its golden yellow hue and labyrinthine steps, which look like they were plucked from one of M.C. Escher's artworks, make for postcard-worthy images . But as tempting as it might be to enter the beautiful attraction for a selfie, Panna Meena ka Kund does not allow visitors to go inside, so keep your photo shoot to the exterior only.

Akshardham Temple might look like an ancient site, but don't be fooled — this attraction was built in the 21st century as part of a series of 10 temples dedicated to the Hindu god Narayana (a form of Lord Vishnu).

Still, the 23-acre religious complex is an impressive place to spend the afternoon. The white marble and pink sandstone temple showcases the intricacy of Hindu architecture with its stone carvings of Hindu deities, animals, and scenery. Step inside to see massive pure-gold statues and pristine paintings. There's also a peaceful garden courtyard brimming with lush plants and a musical fountain just outside.

Attending an annual festival is one of the top things to do in Jaipur, and the city's calendar is chock full of events.

In January, you can watch colorful creations fly through the sky during the International Kite Festival and get books signed by famous authors at the Jaipur Literature Festival.

Standard City Palace composite tickets cost 300 rupees for Indians and 700 rupees for foreigners. These provide access to palace courtyards, galleries, Jaigarh fort, and the royal cenotaphs. Go Behind the Iconic Wind Palace

The intricate facade of the Hawa Mahal (Wind Palace) is possibly Jaipur's most photographed building. Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh constructed it in 1799 as an extension of the women's quarters of the City Palace, to enable the royal women to look out over the main street below without being observed. Wind used to flow through the shutters, giving the palace its name. However, most are now sealed closed to help preserve them. It's possible to go inside the Hawa Mahal from the entrance around the back. Jantar Mantar's intriguing structures are actually a collection of astrological instruments. Each has a specialized astronomical function such as measuring time, predicting eclipses, and tracking stars. The most impressive one is the huge Samrat Yantra sundial. At a height of 90 feet (27 meters), its shadow moves roughly the width of a person's hand every minute. It's a profound display of how quickly time does in fact go! Jantar Mantar (literally meaning "calculation instrument") is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of five such astronomical observatories built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, a renowned mathematician and astronomer. Like something out of a fairy tale, Amber Fort sits atop a hill overlooking Maota Lake about 30 minutes north of the city center. Maharaja Man Singh I, who led Mughal Emperor Akbar's army, commenced constructing the fort in 1592. See the World's Largest Cannon on Wheels

Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II built Jaigarh Fort in 1726 to protect Amber Fort. This fort holds great appeal for military lovers, as it contains the world's largest cannon on wheels. The cannon has never been fired though, and neither has the fort been captured. As a result, it has remained impressively intact over its long life. In fact, the fort is one of the best-preserved military structures of medieval India. Jaigarh doesn't have the delicate palace interiors of Amber Fort, and therefore appears as a real fortress. Climb Diwa Burj watchtower to get an outstanding view over the plains. The fort is situated above Amber Fort and can be reached on foot (if you're fit!). It's open from 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. daily. Not a lot is known about its history but Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh I is thought to have made it a lodge for royal duck hunting trips in the mid 18th century. The palace actually has four floors that are submerged below the water, with specially designed lime mortar to prevent water seepage. Unfortunately, despite being renovated, the palace not yet open to the public, so you'll have to be content with viewing it from the side of the lake.

Spend Sunset at Nahargarh Fort

Compact yet robust Nahargarh Fort (also known as Tiger Fort) is perched high on the rugged Aravali Hills northwest of Jaipur city. Sawai Jai Singh II commissioned it in 1734 to help strengthen the security of his new capital. It found fame in 2006, after scenes from the hit Bollywood movie Rang De Basanti were filmed there. The fort provides spectacular views over the city, particularly at sunset. Inside, the highlight is the Madhavendra Bhavan palace complex, which is the backdrop for the new Sculpture Park. There's also a wax museum, elegant fine-dining restaurant called Once Upon a Time, and a budget government-run restaurant called Padao. If you don't have a government composite ticket, you'll need to pay an entry fee of 50 rupees or Indians and 200 rupees for foreigners to access the palace part of the fort. Relax at the Royal Cenotaphs

Despite being included in the City Palace composite ticket, the Gatore ki Chhatriyan cenotaphs at the foothills of Nahargarh Fort are overlooked by most tourists. This makes them delightfully restful most of the time. The superbly carved cenotaphs honor Jaipur's deceased kings, from Sawai Jai Singh ll to Man Singh ll. The most impressive cenotaph is dedicated to Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh ll. It's made out of white marble, has 20 pillars, and is decorated in carvings of Hindu gods and people. The cenotaph complex is open daily from 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Take the Jaipur-Amber Road and turn off near Jal Mahal to get there. The entry fee for those who don't have a City Palace composite ticket is 40 rupees for Indians and 100 rupees for foreigners. Nearby Garh Ganesh temple is worth visiting too.

Go on a Heritage Water Walk

There are two little-known but important stepwells with amazing architecture around Jaipur (one at Nahargarh and the other near Amber Fort). You can learn about their functionality and the sacredness of water in Rajasthani culture on the informative walking tours conducted by Heritage Water Walks. The explanation of the ancient water catchment systems used to supply water to the forts is fascinating. The tours run for two hours. The cost is 1,000-1,100 rupees per person for Indians and 1,300-1,500 rupees for foreigners. Timings are flexible.

Jaipur's ninth and most colorful gate, Patrika Gate, graces the entrance to Jawahar Circle garden five minutes north of Jaipur airport. This recently constructed but traditional-style ornamental gate is named after the Rajasthani newspaper and media company, Patrika. Its interior walls are covered in splendid paintings depicting scenes from daily life and various regions in Rajasthan. Not surprisingly, it's one of the most popular places for photo shoots in Jaipur.

Get Up Close to Monkeys

The rather ruinous but holy Galtaji temple is nestled between two granite cliffs at the far eastern edge of the city. It's part of a larger temple complex, which also has three sacred pools of water. One of the pools has been taken over by thousands of monkeys that congregate there to swim and bathe. They're generally friendly and love to be fed. Unfortunately, the area is not well maintained. Be prepared to encounter dirt and trash, as well as people who will coerce you to pay money. Visit late afternoon, near sunset, when the monkeys flock to the temple. To get there, from the road walk up the hill to the white Sun Temple, and then follow the steps downhill into the gorge.

Take a Hot Air Balloon Flight

Jaipur is one of the most majestic spots for hot air balloon flights in India. Skywaltz operates two different routes. The main one is just north of Jaipur, surrounding Amber fort. The balloons drift over local villages, forts, and palaces. The other route covers the untouched area around Samode Palace and village. Starting points vary depending on wind speed and direction. The duration of the flight is about an hour, and the cost is from $190 per person. The season extends from September to April.

The lanes in the Old City's bazaars are each dedicated to specific handicrafts. Be Dazzled at the Wholesale Flower Market

Early risers shouldn't miss the fragrant wholesale flower market, known as phool mandi , which takes place just inside the Old City's Chandi ki Taksal Gate. It gets underway at around 6 a.m., with traders selling sacks filled to the brim with bright blooms such as marigolds and roses. The flowers are used by garland makers, as offerings in temples, and as decorations for weddings. Combine your visit with the neighboring fruit and vegetable market as well. If it's a Saturday, the Hatwara flea market pops up there too and is delightfully free of tourists.

Jaipur's Albert Hall Museum is housed in a magnificent old Indo-Saracenic building that was completed in 1187. It's Rajasthan's oldest museum and has an eclectic collection with many items from the city's past including portraits of kings, costumes, jewelry, woodcarvings, paintings, sculptures and pottery. However, the most notable exhibit is an Egyptian mummy, belonging to the Ptolemaic dynasty. Unfortunately photography isn't allowed. The museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and again for night viewing from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. when it's illuminated. The entry fee for those who don't have a government composite ticket is 40 rupees for Indians and 300 rupees for foreigners. Night entry tickets are 100 rupees per person irrespective of nationality.

Discover Rajasthan's Arts and Crafts

The Rajasthan government recently converted the Rajasthan School of Arts building in the Old City into a museum dedicated to the state's arts and crafts. The Museum of Legacies opened in 2017 and is housed in a mansion that was originally constructed in 1823 as the residence of Pandit Shivdeen (a minister in the court of Maharaja Ram Singh II). The building itself is one of the main attractions. Its five galleries are spread over three floors, and each displays a collection curated by a noteworthy individual in the arts scene in India. Indigenous arts are a feature. The museum also has a dedicated space for young artists to exhibit their works. It's open from noon to 8 p.m. daily except Mondays (closed). Entry is free.

Attend a Cultural Performance or Exhibition

The most prominent arts center in Jaipur, Jawahar Kala Kendra sprawls across 9.5 acres of landscape grounds about 10 minutes south of the Old City. Following its recent revamp, it has come alive with regular exhibitions from a range of genres such as photography and architecture, seminars, workshops, dance and music recitals, and theater shows. The center has two permanent art galleries, six exhibition galleries, a library, and coffee house that portrays lesser-known aspects of astronomy through art work. It's open from 9.30 a.m to 9 p.m. on weekdays, and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends.

Admire Gorgeous Antique Jewelry

Amrapali Museum is another new museum in Jaipur. This one opened in 2018 and is India's first museum dedicated to jewelry and jeweled objects. As its name suggests, it was founded by Amrapali, a renowned Indian luxury jewelry house favored by Bollywood stars. All the exhibits in this remarkable museum are from the personal collection of the brand's owners, which they've amassed over 40 years from the time they started sourcing jewelry and opened their business. There are some very unusual items such as silver anklets for horses, a Parsi necklace with a hidden message, a holy water flask, bejeweled tooth cleaners, and ruby-studded back-scratcher with conceal blades. The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Tickets cost 600 rupees per person and include an audio guide.

For all kinds of local street food in one spot, head to Masala Chowk -- an open-air food court in Ram Niwas Garden, close to Albert Hall Museum. Many of the city's much-loved street food vendors have stalls there. It's open daily from around 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. There's an entry fee of 10 rupees per person.

Chokhi Dhani serves up authentic rural cuisine in a recreated 12.5 acre Rajasthani village setting about 40 minutes south of Jaipur. It's quite touristy, with cultural performances such as puppet shows and folk dances, so is best suited to first-time visitors. Opening hours are 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. daily.

Enjoy Indian Masala Chai

India's roadside masala chai (spiced tea) is ubiquitous but not all tourists feel comfortable drinking it from a stall. You can enjoy delicious masala chai in a cool, clean environment at Tapri the Tea House. where roadside chai meets hipster hangout. Tapri Central on Prithviraj Road in C-Scheme is the original and best of the three Tapri outlets in Jaipur.

If tea stalls are more your style, try the uniquely flavored tea at Sahu Chaiwala , opposite Sai Baba Mandir on Chaura Rasta in the Old City. This family-run tea stall was established in 1968. They slow boil the milk on a coal stove. It's open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Gulab Ji Chai's long-running stall on M.I. Road also has a loyal following. Their chai is now available at the new and cute D'Good Cafe in Bani Park.

Have a Drink at Bar Palladio

Bar Palladio, at the historic Narain Niwas Palace Hotel, is possibly Jaipur's most photogenic bar. Renowned Dutch designer Marie-Anne Oudejans created its interiors, and they are stunning. The bar is an ideal spot for a post-sightseeing cocktail or gin, accompanied by delicious Italian food. It's open daily from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. In the evening, the atmosphere is magical, with tented garden pavilions and candlelight.

See a Bollywood Movie at Raj Mandir

A lot of people who go to see a movie at Raj Mandir on Bhagwant Das Road (near M.I. Road) do so to mainly to have a look inside. Its owner, a reputed Jaipur jeweler, wanted to create a cinema that makes the audience feel like they're a guest of a royal palace. The way it has been designed -- resplendent with spiral staircase, antique chandeliers, and a ceiling that changes color -- is certainly intriguing. Movies, in Hindi, are screened in the afternoons and evenings.

The magnificent Taj Rambagh Palace used to be the home of the Maharaja of Jaipur and is the pick of the bunch if budget isn't a constraint. It's worth treating yourself! Sujan Raj Mahal Palace (immaculately renovated in 2014) and Samode Haveli are other top luxury options. Support Indian Textile Traditions

Nila House is a contemporary new non-profit hub for the preservation and promotion of traditional Indian crafts. It opened in October 2019, in a converted 1940s bungalow on Prithviraj Road, with the aim of facilitating interaction and collaborations with local artisans and weavers. The space has studios, showrooms, an archive and research library, exhibition gallery, textiles vault, and artists-in-residence rooms. Products designed and made in-house are retailed in a store on the premises. Regular craft-focused workshops and seminars take place there as well. Nila House is open daily, except Sundays, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Learn About Block Printing

The Anokhi Museum of Block Printing, in a restored heritage mansion near Amber fort, is an absorbing attraction for those interested in this handicraft. It's open from 10.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. on Sunday. Plan ahead to be there for one of the regular block printing demonstrations and workshops.

You can also visit Bagru village, about an hour southwest of Jaipur. The whole village is dedicated to block printing. You'll be able to see the artisans and watch them in action. You'll also get to view the fabric drying in the sun. Vedic Walks and Studio Bagru offer guided trips and workshops.

Hike in the Hills

It may come as a surprise that the wall surrounding Amber is the third longest in the world (after the Great Wall of China and Rajasthan's Kumbhalgarh fort ). A hike along it will take you through the Aravali mountain range to an ancient temple, lake, villages, and some old royal hunting lodges. Plus, you'll be rewarded with captivating views and an amazing sense of perspective. Set aside about five hours to complete the trek. Various companies offer guided trips if you don't want to do it alone. Virasat Experiences conducts a shorter two-hour hike to a tribal village .

Befriend Elephants

There are plenty of places to spend time with India's much-loved pachyderms in the elephant care village near Amber fort. Elefantastic is the most popular one. You'll be able to wash, feed and walk the elephants, and learn about their medicines and treatments. The elephants aren't chained up or ridden there. However, do be aware that they work at Amber fort in the morning. Foreigners can expect to pay 4,000-5,100 rupees per adult for the day. Discounts are available for children. The price for Indian adults is 2,000-3,500 rupees. This includes all activities and a vegetarian meal.

An alternative is Dera Amer Wilderness Camp, about 30 minutes from Jaipur at the foothills of the Aravali mountains. They have three resident female elephants that were adopted from Amber fort and roam around the property. Guests can interact with them and bathe them.

Visit or Volunteer at Ladli

Ladli is a non-profit vocational training center and residential shelter that supports underprivileged women and children, including orphans and abused children who have been rescued from the streets. The children are looked after, educated, and taught how to make beautiful quality handicrafts such as jewelry, which you can buy. It's a happy and inspiring place that encourages visitors and volunteers. Your kids will have fun playing with the younger children there. Call ahead and the center will arrange free transport for you, as its backstreet location is difficult to find. A couple of hours is required to fully see and appreciate everything.

City Palace - The main attraction of the old city of Jaipur is its City Palace. A complex of courtyards, gardens and buildings, the impressive City Palace is right in the centre of the Old City. The complex includes Peacock Gate.
Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds) - Jaipur's most instantly recognizable landmark, the Hawa Mahal, or 'Palace of Winds', stands to the east of the City Palace. It's best appreciated from the outside during the early morning, when it glows orange-pink in the rays of the rising sun. Hawa Mahal is a five-story facade of hundreds of latticed-stone screened windows, behind which the ladies of the palace could view the city without being seen. Visitors are permitted to climb up the winding ramp to the top.
Jantar Mantar - Adjacent to the City Palace is Jantar Mantar. This medieval observatory is the largest of its kind in the world.
Amber (or Amer) Fort - 11km north of Jaipur lies the first royal residence of the Maharajas of Kachhwaha. This magnificent fort is more of a palace, built from pale yellow and pink sandstone and white marble, and divided into four main sections, each with its own courtyard. The most memorable part of a trip here is standing at the fort's highest point and photographing the parade of elephants.
Old City (Pink City) - The Old City is partially encircled by a crenellated wall punctuated at intervals by grand gateways. The major gates are Chandpol (pol means 'gate'), Ajmer Gate and Sanganeri Gate. Avenues divide the Pink City into neat rectangles, each specialising in certain crafts, as ordained in the Shilpa-Shastra. The main bazaars in the Old City include Johari Bazaar, Tripolia Bazaar, Bapu Bazaar and Chandpol Bazaar; see the walking tour or Shopping for more details of these bazaars.
Badi Chaupar - Badi Chaupar, literally 'Large Square', also known as Manak Chowk, is a public square in Jaipur. It houses Jaipur's main attractions: the unusual shapes of the Jantar Mantar observatory, the lovely Hawa Mahal, and the exotic Johari Bazaar. Another unmissable nearby attraction here is the City Palace Museum, full of dazzling costumes, weaponry and royal relics.
Tripolia Bazaar - To the south of the City Palace is one of the walled city's busiest streets and bazaars. The shops here mainly sell an enormous range of metal goods and kitchenware.
Jaigarh Fort - The fort has water reservoirs, residential areas, a puppet theatre and the world's largest wheeled cannon, Jaya Vana. It is a steep uphill walk (about 1km) from Amber and offers great views from the Diwa Burj watchtower.
Sanager - A colourful town (map: 16km south of Jaipur), renowned for its block printed cotton textiles.
Bagru - The small village of Bagru is yet another traditional textile printing centre.
Alwar - Situated between Mughal and Rajput territories, Alwar's most famous attraction is the City Palace.

Pick up a detailed map at the tourist information centre - The Rajasthan Tourist Development Corporation information bureau is located on Platform 1 at the Jaipur Railway Station. You will be able to pick up large maps covering the city and the surrounding region.

Map orientation & surrounding area - The Jaipur region of Rajasthan lies on the eastern fringes of the Thar Desert, a semi-arid land cut southwest to northeast by the craggy Aravalli Hills. Jaipur area is centred around the old capital of Amber and the 'newer' city of Jaipur with its palace, observatory, temples and bazaars and impressive modern buildings. To Jaipur's north are the attractive Samode palace and Shekhawati areas, while to its northeast is the wooded area of the Aravallis, where Alwar, a former princely state, and the Sariska National Park are situated. To the southwest, past the textile towns of Sanganer and Bagru, are the religious sites of Ajmer and Pushkar. South of Jaipur lies Chaksu, a pilgrim centre, an important medieval kingdom of Tonk, b which is the spectacular tiger sanctuary Ranthambhore, nestling beneath the gra ramparts of a historic medieval fort.

Lonely Planet editor Akanksha Singh traveled to Jaipur to experience its history and culture. Here, she shares some tips and insights for anyone planning a similar trip.

Road trips to Jaipur were a key part of my childhood in India . Before we left India, my parents would drive my sister and I over from Delhi on long weekends. We’d spent our time visiting local sights, stopping at streetside kathputli (puppet) shows, eating local food, and listening to ek tara , single-stringed instruments, played with a bow.

Some 20 years later, the familiar sight of the red-, pink- and honey-hued forts never fails to amaze me. People say India’s Golden Triangle – Jaipur-Delhi-Agra – is a sensory overload. And it definitely is for people who haven’t traveled through pockets of Asia. Dubbed the “Pink City” after its pink paint-slicked walls that are lined with shops, this trip to Jaipur took me deeper into the historic town's chaotic bylanes and beyond the city’s outskirts.

Where did you stay? What was the vibe?

I stayed at Teela the Glamping Resort in Achrol, a village an hour outside Jaipur. I’ve never “glamped” before (I studied geology at university; camping’s more my thing) but I enjoyed the novelty of the experience. It’s really no different from staying in a swish five-star hotel but in a “Moon Dome” – a geodesic tent – with stellar views of the desert, complete with raw dunes, tiny bulbuls and larks twittering away outside your door.

There’s a single restaurant, Rait, on the premises (food was good; I’d recommend the Indian menu over the continental spread) and Teela does offer hotplates and a mini kitchenette setup for long-term guests. However, I did make the mistake of thinking breakfast would be most enjoyable al fresco (it was – for all of two minutes) until I realized that gritty stuff caught in my teeth was indeed sand in my aloo paratha (potato-filled flatbread).

What was the most touristy thing you did?

I did so much touristy sightseeing on this trip and, since it’d been a while since I’d seen the highlights, I regret none of it! I toured Amber Fort , with its extravagant chambers and geometrically charged gardens, took photos of the iconic red-and-pink-latticed Hawa Mahal and visited the City Palace , which is still home to Jaipur’s royal family.

Built in the 18th century, the City Palace’s four gates – in an inner courtyard named Pritam Niwas Chowk (“beloved’s courtyard”) – are an artistic obsession of mine. Each “gate” is an extravagantly designed door, themed against a season and dedicated to a Hindu deity. If I’m being honest here, the most touristy thing I did was take an Instagram-esque video of a journal with the Lehariya Gate or Green Gate (which represents spring) on its cover with the gate in the background. The gate is spectacular: glossy forest green tiles frame an ornate, heavy golden door in a cinquefoil arch.

For those less obsessed with gloriously designed doors, the City Palace has much more to offer, including a museum and a splendid blue room (Chhavi Niwas), and parts of the royal wing are open to the public too. Plus, it’s right by Jantar Mantar – an 18th century observatory that’s a UNESCO site built by Jai Singh II, a king fascinated by astronomy. What was the best thing you ate?

Jaipur has an impossibly good selection of food, and I’m one of those people who plans their days around meals, especially when I’m traveling. If I had to choose, my favorite meal would be the Rajasthani thali (plate meal) at Kuchali Mud House , a quaint, family-run establishment in Chak Charanwas, a village roughly an hour outside Jaipur city.

Most Rajasthani thali meals boast a combination of dhal, baati , churma – baati is a crusted unleavened bread that’s softened with melted ghee (ideal for the once nomadic desert folk) and churma is crushed, sweetened baati , dressed with nuts and dry fruit. However, the fragrant gulab (rose) churma – cerise and topped with slivered almonds – was new to me and delicious.

There’s a common belief in these parts that food cooked on a chulha (wood-burning stove), with freshly milled flours and freshly milked dairy is superior to their contemporary counterparts, and I have to agree. I have a reasonable spice tolerance, but those who aren’t as keen on heat are requested to call ahead to communicate this along with any other dietary restrictions. For a good Rajasthani laal maas (literally “red meat”), a decadent goat meat curry (with adjustable spice levels), try rait .

What was the most under-the-radar activity you enjoyed?

I rode ATVs and went paintballing at Motosport Park (both are a combined ₹1700), but visiting a pottery community in Chak Charanwas (organized by the Kuchali Mud House) was the highlight of my trip. Jaipur is famous for its pottery with a cobalt blue glaze, which is Turko-Persian in origin. However, I got to throw tiny forms on a potter’s wheel with locally-sourced clay. I’m a hobby ceramist, so learning from experienced potters was an absolute boon.

Pottery is still largely a caste-based profession in India (which means it’s not usually a profession people get to choose, but are born and forced into). So, it was refreshing to see a thriving enterprise run by people who now also supply their terracotta pottery to big hotel groups in addition to selling it to visitors. They make everything from vases and diyas (lamps) to screw-top water bottles and sculptures.

What was the handiest thing you packed?

Layers and linens. I traveled in early March, when days are sweltering but evenings – particularly if you’re set up outside the city in the desert like I was – can get a little nippy. One thing I noticed about the rooms at Teela were that they had both ACs and radiators to bridge the change in seasons. Overall, light layers to wear over linen clothes and sun protection are essential.

It’s also hugely important to stay hydrated in the sun; I packed a reusable water bottle to cut down on my plastic waste. Most resorts and restaurants will refill your water bottle with filtered water on request (add chlorine pills if you need to be extra careful).

Also, the midday sun often results in phones overheating, so it’s probably worthwhile investing in a phone cooler, particularly if you plan on taking a ton of photos and videos.

Best tip for someone who wants to plan the same trip?

Many tourist spots in Jaipur frequently close for filming and there’s no way of finding out whether a certain attraction is closed for a shoot until you’re on the premises (calling ahead doesn’t always work). Leave plenty of time for sightseeing with the aim of revisiting popular sights if they’re closed.

Also, while there are a few cafes dotted around the city, chai is the caffeinated beverage of choice in these parts. So, if you’re anything like me, you’ll want to pack a cafetiere.

4. Jal Mahal

10. Albert Hall Museum

The Albert Hall Museum was initially intended to be a concert hall when it was constructed in 1876, and its name comes from the architectural resemblance to London’s Victoria and Albert Hall Museum. It is often called the Government Central Museum and is a preserved example of Indo-Saracenic architecture. A staggering 16 art galleries house the vast collection of antiquities from all around the world that Albert Hall Museum has amassed. History aficionados will enjoy the antique coins, marble art, ceramics, rugs, and, most notably, the Egyptian mummy. As night falls, the museum assumes a completely different façade as gorgeous yellow lights illuminate the entire structure.

11. Abhaneri Step Well

One of the biggest step wells in the world, Chand Baori, also known as Stepwells of Abhaneri, is located in Rajasthan. The main purpose of creating step wells was to store rainwater in the desert regions and act as natural air conditioners during the oppressively hot summers. The enormous pavilion, complicated construction and excellent geometry, including windows, galleries, and balconies, is thirteen stories high.

The shimmering green water shows out in contrast to the stone stairways as one looks from the top of the board towards the bottom, making it a sight to behold. A photographer may get great angles and photo chances when the sun is high in the sky because of the stairs’ intricate maze-like patterning in the light and shadows. The Chand Baori is a photographer’s dream because of its amazing architecture and the intricate geometric design of the entire building.

The Abhaneri step has many tales and people attached to it because it is so old. It is stated that no one has ever been able to descend and ascend using the same set of steps.

Timings: The stepwell is open to visitors on all days from 08.00 A.M. to 06.00 P.M.

12. Chokhi Dhani

A mock village named “Chokhi Dhani” is located about 20 miles outside Jaipur’s main city and is an amazing representation of Rajasthani culture and cuisine. The word Chokhi Dhani means Rajasthani Culture in its literal sense.

The small village was constructed in 1989 across a 10-acre area with a specific goal: to draw tourists and introduce them to the genuine Rajasthani culture and traditions.

There are many activities one can enjoy here at Chokhi Dhani Jaipur. The famous Haldighati Battle is enacted here by artists for all tourists. The village also offers animal, cart, and boat rides. You will also be welcomed by performers doing the Kalebeliya and other Rajasthani dance forms. Visitors can also indulge in games like ‘Bhool Bhulaiya’ (Maze) and ‘Gufa Jharni’ (Trekking in artificial caves). There is also a museum and a shopping area available for all to visit and get some souvenirs.

It is one of the best places to visit in Jaipur to experience Rajasthani culture.

Timings: Chokhi Dhani is open on all days of the week from 05.00 P.M. to 11.00 P.M.

Entry Fees: The cost depends on the dining option you choose. It ranges from INR 750 to INR 1200 for adults and INR 450 to INR 800 for children. Entry for children below 3 years of age is free.

13. Gaitore Cenotaphs – Gaitore ki Chhatriyaan

The Kachwaha, a Rajput dynasty who dominated the area, interred their dead at Gaitore Ki Chhatriyan, their royal cremation grounds. The complex is dotted with the cenotaphs of the royals, giving the impression of being made up of both elaborate towers and scaled-down open-air palaces. The structures designate the locations of prior leaders’ cremations.

The cenotaphs are made of white marble from Makrana, which is of the highest quality. Some ‘chhatris’ are adorned with sculptures of Apsara (nymphs), Gandharvas (musicians), or processions. Maharaja Jai Singh II’s cenotaph, with its 20 sculptured columns, is the most spectacular.

The picturesque location offers a breathtaking and expansive view of the entire city of Jaipur. You can see famous sites like the Jal Mahal and Mansarovar Lake from Gaitore ki Chhatriyaan. This area is less crowded and perfect for peace seekers when compared to other tourist places to visit in Jaipur .

14. Panna Meena ka Kund

Panna Meena ka Kund is another stepwell located in Jaipur. It is part of the Amber region of Jaipur. The only completely operable stepwell repaired in Jaipur is Panna Meena ka Kund. It goes back to a time when there was no piped water. The Kund has long aided the nearby villages in getting access to potable water.

According to several residents, Panna Meena ka Kund was constructed so that Amer’s inhabitants could gather water that they then utilised at numerous adjacent temples for rituals. Women also came here to fill water containers for consumption around the house. Aside from this, due to the much lower temperature within the stepwell, Panna Meena ka Kund served as a rest stop for several travellers, including business people and saints.

Timings: The Kund is open 24×7, but it is advised to go before the evening starts setting in

15. World Trade Park

World Trade Park is a popular place among all for shopping and recreation. The mall is divided into two blocks on either side of the JLN Marg. The mall has over 500 shops, a food court, movie theatres, and other entertainment areas. The outside colour pattern of the 11-story building is blue and silver. The mall includes a selection of Western and ethnic apparel outlets for all. Many accessory shops, footwear stores, bag and luggage shops, jeweller brands, and athletic stores exist. Shopping here is one of the best things to do in Jaipur.

Fun fact: The mall was inaugurated by Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan.

16. Sargasuli Tower/Isarlaat

To commemorate the triumph of Maharaja Sawai Ishwari Singh, the magnificent victory tower known as Sargasuli Tower has stood upright amid the pink city of Jaipur since 1749. The rivalry between the two brothers – Ishwari Singh and Madho Singh- is also interesting. The marriage of Sawai Jai Singh II to the Mewari princess Sisodia may have had a clause mandating that Maharani Chandra Kanwar’s child become the King. However, Sawai Jai Singh I wanted Ishwari Singh to rule instead of him, something the Maharana of Mewar disapproved of. This disapproval led to a rivalry between the two brothers for the throne, leading to the Battle of Rajmahal. Sawai Ishwari Singh won and ordered the erection of this minaret in commemoration of his victory.

In contrast to the pink colour in the city’s buildings and market areas, the tower is a seven-storeyed octagonal structure constructed using a combination of Mughal and Rajput architectural traditions. Visitors may see the breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of Jaipur City from the top of this tower.

Timings: It is open from 09.30 A.M. to 04.00 P.M.

17. Jantar Mantar

Over the years, Jaipur’s Jantar Mantar has embodied the spirit of countless travellers’ wanderlust. This open-air astronomical observatory is one of the best places to visit in Jaipur and worldwide. It is also a UNESCO-recognised World Heritage Site.

This observatory was far ahead of its time and displayed the traditional methods of reading stars and the sky, with an intriguing history that precedes modern civilisation.

Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II built 5 such observatories all over India. Jaipur’s Jantar Mantar has 19 instruments that serve specific purposes in astronomy. The ‘Samrat Yantra’ is the most popular as it is India’s biggest sundial.

18. Birla Mandir

Birla Mandir is a holy and sacred temple for Hindus devoted to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. It is also called Laxmi Narayan Mandir. It embodies beauty in every aspect. Thousands of devotees arrive here in this marble-constructed temple daily to offer prayers. It is surrounded by verdant gardens of the most beautiful gardens on all sides and is decorated with exquisite carvings and designs. The domes of this temple are intended to symbolise the equality of all religions, which sets it apart from other temples.

The temple’s walls are adorned with famous sayings and religious preaches by Buddha, Socrates, and Confucius. The three domes of the temple symbolise harmony and peace among all religions. The outer area of the temple houses glass stains with scenes from Hindu mythology.

Timings: The temple is open from 06.00 A.M. to 12.00 P.M. and 03.00 P.M. to 09.00 P.M.

19. Moti Doongri Temple

The Moti Doongri Temple near Birla Mandir is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Thousands of devotees offer prayers here daily and commemorate the start of new chapters and beginnings in their lives. The temple’s construction has a history dating back to the 17th century. It is said that when the King of Mewar returned with a Lord Ganesha sculpture in his bullock cart, he built a temple wherever the cart first halted. The cart halted at the foothill of Moti Doongri, where the King built the temple. There is also a castle next to the temple that belonged to Madho Singh’s son. The castle is out of bounds for visitors as it is a private property.
