Fourplay (formed in 1991) is an American contemporary jazz supergroup known for incorporating influences from a wide-spectrum of genres including R&B, pop and soul which is epitomised on their 1991 debut, self-titled album.

Comprised of keyboardist Bob James, guitarist Lee Ritenour, bassist Nathan East, and drummer Harvey Mason, Fourplay was formed after members contributed to James’ “Grand Piano Canyon” album in 1991. Shortly after forming the group issued their debut self-titled album, which sold over a million copies and held the top spot of the Billboard contemporary jazz chart for 33 weeks. The record proved to be the first of many releases on Warner Bros., succeeded by “Between the Sheets” in 1993 and “Elixir” in 1995. Both albums went on to find the top of the Billboard jazz chart, with “Between the Sheets” also receiving a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Album.

In 1997, Fourplay issued the compilation “The Best of Fourplay”, which included the popular cover singles “Higher Ground” (Stevie Wonder), “After the Dance” (Marvin Gaye), and “Why Can’t It Wait ’Til Morning” (Phil Collins). Marked by the arrival of guitarist Larry Carlton, the record was followed by the huge popular album “4” in 1998, featuring the Marvin Gaye single “Sexual Healing”. The following year Fourplay issued the holiday-themed album “Snowbound”, which became a showcase for the group’s seasoned and highly-refined musical output, and paved the way for Fourplay’s final album with Warner Bros., “Yes, Please!” in 2000.

After signing with RCA’s Bluebird, Fourplay released three albums with the label, “Heartfelt” (2002), “Journey” (2004), and “X” (2006), cementing the group’s revered reputation as figureheads of contemporary jazz. Following three albums with Bluebird, the band moved to Heads Up Records, who issued Fourplay’s 11th studio album “Energy” in 2008. Marked by its fusion tendencies which incorporate the sounds R&B, pop, and African rhythms, the album’s lead single, “Fotune Teller”, later earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Instrumental Performance in 2009. New guitarist Chuck Loeb joined the group following the release and made his debut on the group’s twelfth studio album “Let’s Touch the Sky” in 2010. Proving another popular release for Fourplay, the record was followed by “Esprit de Four” in 2012.

Live reviews

Grammy nominated contemporary jazz quartet Fourplay have dominated the genre over the last twenty years and producing eleven albums and to this day continue providing audio delights. The sugergroup consisting of: keyboardist Bob James, bassist Nathan East, drummer Harvey Mason and Chuck Loeb on guitar, have all had previous success in other projects performing alongside legendary artists but the journey for Fourplay began in 1990. Their commercial success comes from their ability to fuse contemporary jazz with elements of pop and R&B while still achieving universal appeal. Fourplay’s debut self-titled album went into Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz charts at number one where it remained for 33 weeks. Playing to concert halls around the world, Fourplay have grown more in stature through their notably incredible live performances. All talented in their own right, together as Fourplay they create something magical and intoxicating. Dressed to the nines in the black suits and red ties, the band delve into their plentiful back catalogue with tracks like ‘I’ll Still Be Loving You’, ‘Let’s Touch The Sky’ and ‘Chant’ in which East scats through its R&B sensibilities, clearly vibing off the music. The audience are highly attentive as they sit mesmerised by the naturally smooth chemistry which Fourplay possess, delivering a perfectly orchestrated set list to melt the softest of hearts.

After queuing for an hour, we were finally let in to the hall, to scramble for the best seats. The first few rows were reserved, odd that when the gig was supposed to be all unreserved, but I suppose there is unreserved for the public and reserved unreserved for our betters.

Fourplay came on just after 8:30, 1.5 hours after we were let in. They were absolutely mind bendingly superb, this incarnation had on short notice replaced very ill Chuck Loeb (get well soon) with saxophonist Kirk Whalum and it gave the smooth jazzers a new vibrant sexy vibe These guys love being on stage and love playing together, you can feel the warmth of their friendships spill out from the stage. For just thirty quid we witnessed four exceptionally gifted musicians playing their hearts out. The Standout tune was Precious metal, ironically a chuck loeb composition

This was a great concert, only marred on a personal level by some idiot in front who decided to watch the concert through the lenses of his phone camera, waving it about like some demented David Lean.

Go again to see Fourplay? Like a shot but if it's at the Union Chapel, can I ask that they move the start time to 8 at the latest, those pews are hard on the bottom and the audience like fourplay aren't getting any younger.

Concord Jazz

For two decades, the contemporary jazz quartet known as Fourplay has enjoyed consistent artistic and commercial success by grafting elements of R&B, pop and a variety of other sounds to their unwavering jazz foundations. In the course of a dozen recordings – six of which have climbed to the top of Billboard ’s Contemporary Jazz Album charts – the supergroup has continued to explore the limitless dimensions and permutations of jazz while at the same time appealing to a broad mainstream audience.

The Fourplay story begins in 1990, with keyboardist Bob James, who had already established himself as a formidable figure in keyboard jazz – not just as an instrumentalist but as a composer and arranger as well – with solo recordings dating as far back as the mid 1960s. In 1990, James reunited with his old friend, session drummer, producer, composer & recording artist Harvey Mason (Herbie Hancock, Barbra Streisand, Notorious BIG), during the recording of James’ Grand Piano Canyon album. Also involved in the project were guitarist Lee Ritenour (Sergio Mendes) and bassist/vocalist Nathan East (Barry White, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins).

The Grand Piano Canyon sessions marked the genesis of the group that eventually came to be known as Fourplay. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1991, and included a blend of jazz, R&B and pop.

The original lineup of James/Ritenour/East/Mason stayed together for three successive albums, including Elixir (1994), a set that features some high-profile guest vocalists: Phil Collins, Patti Austin and Peabo Bryson. East also delivers some noteworthy vocal contributions on Elixir, and has continued to do so throughout most of Fourplay’s subsequent studio outings.

Ritenour, whose guitar work in tandem with James’ keyboards served as the cornerstone of the early Fourplay sound, left the lineup in the mid-1990s and was replaced by Larry Carlton (The Crusaders, Joni Mitchell, Quincy Jones). Carlton made his first studio appearance with the band with the release of 4 in 1998. 4 included compositions by all four members, as well as an impressive crew of guest vocalists: El Debarge, Babyface Edmonds, Kevyn Lettau and Shanice.

Following the 1999 release of Snowbound, a mix of traditional and contemporary holiday songs, Fourplay shook things up a bit with Yes Please!, an album that challenged the standard definitions of contemporary jazz by incorporating elements of blues, funk and even Celtic music. JazzTimes critic Hilarie Grey called Yes Please! “An expansive album that incorporates each artist’s strengths, and in the process travels in some unexpected directions.” Grey added: “ Yes Please! works where similar projects fail simply because it lets its artists play, without imposing artificial boundaries.”

The sense of experimentation continued with the 2002 release of Heartfelt. The material in this set emerged from a series of improvisational performances that were assembled into full compositions. As a result, the tunes have less clearly defined melodies, but the overall album is both exploratory and accessible at the same time.

Journey, released in 2004, is a laid-back affair, but complex at the same time. Consistent with Fourplay’s eclectic philosophy, Journey incorporates a range of stylistic elements – as evidenced by such high points as the delicate cover of the 1993 Sting hit “Fields of Gold” and the Mason bossa nova flavored “Rozil.”

X followed in 2006, with guest vocals by blue-eyed-soul icon Michael McDonald, who delivers an inspired rendition of Steve Winwood’s “My Loves Leavin’.” JazzTimes called X “a softly funky, superbly crafted and unapologetically low-key album.”

Fourplay joined the prestigious roster of artists on Heads Up International, a division of Concord Music Group, with the 2008 release of Energy , which spent three consecutive weeks at the top of Billboard ’s Contemporary Jazz chart. The album grafts a variety of sounds – R&B, pop, African and more – to Fourplay’s unwavering jazz foundations. In addition to vocals by East, Energy features a vocal track by bassist Esperanza Spalding.

After 12 years with the group, Carlton left in April 2010 to delve further into his solo career, and the band welcomed its newest member, multi-faceted virtuoso guitarist, Chuck Loeb. His musical contributions undoubtedly enhance the creativity and pursuit of excellence Fourplay has enjoyed in the studio and on the stage.

Loeb made his debut with the quartet on Let’s Touch The Sky, released in October 2010. The album also includes thrilling performances by guest vocalists Anita Baker and Ruben Studdard. The infusion of new blood into the Fourplay lineup created an opportunity to bring an even higher level of energy and inspiration into a band that is already known for taking chances and pushing the limits of contemporary jazz.

Esprit De Four , Fourplay’s September 2012 release, explores the place where four unique perspectives become a single creative force. That symmetry and creativity are at the heart of the album, which included the poignant but hopeful “Put Our Hearts Together,” written by James – with lyrics by his daughter, Hilary James, and vocal featuring Japanese superstar Seiko Matsuda – as a tribute to the victims of the devastating tsunami that struck Japan in March 2011.

On Silver , set for release on November 20, 2015, Fourplay celebrates their 25th anniversary with their most wide-ranging and gratifying recording to date. Following the theme of the occasion, most of the 10 new original compositions comprising Silver play off of the anniversary, bearing titles such as “Sterling,” “Precious Metal” and “A Silver Lining.” Just like its namesake, Silver shines, each track a brilliant example of what has made this formidable ensemble – each of whom also has a highly successful career outside of the band – one of the most respected in the jazz world.

2024 Tour de France Polka Dot Jersey Contenders

With another mountainous course, the 2024 Tour will again be a playground for climbers hoping to win stages and maybe the polka dot jersey as the tour’s king of the mountains.

110th tour de france 2023 stage 2

With another mountainous course on tap for 2024, the battle to win the polka dot jersey will again be fierce. This is especially true given that the last two of the last three riders to win the competition (Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar) have done so while on their way to winning the yellow jersey–and both are poised to renew their rivalry this year.

So here’s a rundown of this year’s polka dot jersey contenders–and some other climbers looking to win a stage or two in this year’s Tour.

The Defending Champion

Giulio ciccone (lidl-trek).

topshot cycling fra tdf2023 stage16

Ciccone won last year’s King of the Mountains competition after making a concerted effort to take and defend the polka dot jersey once the Tour hit the Alps. The Italian will be back to defend his title this year and has a good chance of doing so given the fact that his Lidl-Trek squad is starting the Tour without a rider targeting the General Classification.

And Ciccone is riding well: after dealing with a lingering saddle sore issue throughout the first part of the season, he finished third overall at the recent Critérium du Dauphiné. At the Tour de France, we suspect he’ll prioritize a stage victory over the polka dot jersey, but since most mountain stages are won after a day spent in the breakaway (these days, at least), one often comes with the other. Expect the 29-year-old to stay off the radar during the first week, then start shooting for stages once the race hits the Pyrenees at the end of the second.

The Challengers

Tadej pogačar (uae team emirates).

110th tour de france 2023 stage 17

Pogačar won the yellow and polka dot ( and white) jerseys in 2020 and 2021, and there’s a chance that the Slovenian will win both jerseys again in 2024. (At 25 years old, he no longer qualifies for the Tour’s Best Young Rider competition.) Of the two, Pogačar will certainly be prioritizing winning a third yellow jersey this year, but if he races with the tenacity he displayed at the recent Giro d’Italia–where he won six stages, the General Classification and the King of the Mountains Competition–there might be little anyone can do to stop him.

Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike)

109th tour de france 2022 stage 18

In 2022, Vingegaard made sure that for the third year in a row, the rider who won the yellow jersey also won the polka dot jersey. The streak was broken by Ciccone last year, but it was close: the Dane finished third in the Tour’s KOM competition, just 16 points away from Ciccone.

His chances of winning the polka dot jersey this year will depend on his chances of winning the yellow jersey. After missing much of the spring due a horrible crash at the Tour of the Basque Country, Vingegaard’s form is a bit of a question mark. If he makes it through the first two weeks of the Tour with the yellow jersey in reach, forget the polka dot jersey. But if he’s lost too much to be a serious challenger, he could shift focus to stage wins–and perhaps the King of the Mountains competition.

Romain Bardet and Warren Barguil (dsm-firmenich PostNL)

With Bardet and Barguil, dsm-firmenich PostNL is bringing two former winners of the Tour’s King of the Mountain competition–and they’re both Frenchman, which adds a bit of mystique to their participation. Bardet–a two-time podium finisher who won the polka dot jersey in 2019–is riding his last Tour de France this summer. He recently finished sixth at the Giro d’Italia and will likely be targeting a stage win in his final Tour. Barguil–who won two mountain stages and the polka dot jersey in 2017–is hoping for a similar outcome. It will be interesting to see how the team manages their competing aspirations, but with the Dutch squad starting the race without a bonafide GC contender, each should have several opportunities to ride for himself.

Louis Meintjes (Intermarché-Wanty)

110th tour de france 2023 stage 1

A tiny climber from South Africa, Meintjes has five top-10 Tour de France stage finishes on his resume, but he’s still hunting for that elusive victory. He came closest in 2022, when he finished second to Great Britain’s Tom Pidcock on Alpe d’Huez. Fifteenth at the Dauphiné in early June, he’s coming into form for the Tour de France, where we expect him to target specific stages in search of what would be a first Tour stage victory for both the South African and his Belgian team.

Felix Gall (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team)

110th tour de france 2023 stage 17

Gall finished second in last year’s King of the Mountains competition, but more importantly, he won a stage: Stage 17 over the Col de la Loze, the toughest climb in last year’s Tour. It will be interesting to see how he attacks this year’s race. He started last year’s Tour in support of Australia’s Ben O’Connor, but then became their protected GC rider after O’Connor lost time in the first week. This year, we suspect he’ll be starting the Tour with his eye on a top-5 or top-10 finish. But he rides for a French team, so don’t be surprised if the plan changes and Gall once again hunts for a stage win or the polka dot jersey, results that would mean more to the team from a publicity standpoint than a seventh-place finish overall.

Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain-Victorious)

82nd paris nice 2024 stage 4

Buitrago has won two mountain stages at the Giro d’Italia and now gets his first shot at the Tour de France. Somewhat surprisingly, given the other riders on the roster–and the fact that he’s never finished better than tenth overall in any of the five grand tours he’s started–the Colombian was identified as the team’s leader in their roster announcement video. We think the 24-year-old is better suited for mountain stage wins and a high finish in the Tour’s King of the Mountains competition. And keep an eye on his teammates, Pello Bilbao and Wout Poels, each of whom won a stage last year and could do so again this July–especially in such a mountainous Tour.

David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ)

109th tour de france 2022 stage 5

Gaudu was the apple of France’s Tour de France eye after finishing fourth overall in 2022. But after starting last year’s race in search of the podium, he managed only ninth. After recently testing positive for Covid-19 and missing last weekend’s French national championships, we don’t see him as a GC contender this year, especially with such a tough opening weekend during which he could lose minutes to the Tour’s fresher, healthier contenders. But that means the 27-year-old will have more opportunities to go on the hunt for stage wins–and the polka for the jersey–later in the Tour. We’ll also be watching his 20-year-old teammate and compatriot, Lenny Martinez, who’s riding his first Tour de France after coming close to taking a mountain stage win in last year’s Vuelta a España.

Stephen Williams (Premier Tech)

87th tour de suisse 2024 stage 3

Cycling doesn’t give a “Comeback Rider of the Year Award,” but if Williams wins a stage at the Tour, it might need to consider creating one. The 28-year-old went from almost not finding a contract for this season to winning his first WorldTour stage race (the Tour Down Under) and one of the sport’s oldest one-day Classics (Flèche Wallonne). Now, the Briton is riding his first Tour de France, where we expect him to partner with Canada’s Derek Gee to keep Israel-Premier Tech’s Tour de France stage-winning streak alive. (The team won stages in 2022 and 2023.)

As he did at the recent Tour de Suisse–where he finished way down on the General Classification, but took second on Stage 3–we expect Williams to pick his best chances well in advance, losing time on other days and keeping himself fresh for the stages on which he knows he has the best chance to score a victory.

Other Climbers to Watch

France’s Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) is a typical French rider in that he races with lots of panache, but often goes home with nothing to show for it other than a top-10 GC finish that he earned by virtue of gaining time from a few big breakaways. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.) We’d love to see him win a stage.

Norway’s Uno-X Mobility squad will be targeting stage wins mainly through sprints and breakaways. But if the second-year wild card team wins a mountain stage, expect it to come from Tobias Halland Johannessen , who came close to earning the team its first Tour stage last year. A former winner of the Tour de l’Avenir, the 24-year-old could one day become a GC contender, but for now, he’s content just trying to climb his way to a mountain stage victory.

Since getting hooked on pro cycling while watching Lance Armstrong win the 1993 U.S. Pro Championship in Philadelphia, longtime Bicycling contributor Whit Yost has raced on Belgian cobbles, helped build a European pro team, and piloted that team from Malaysia to Mont Ventoux as an assistant director sportif. Miles Russell, Veritex Bank Championship

Two months ago, 15-year-old Miles Russell set an incredible record , becoming the youngest player to make a cut in a Korn Ferry Tour event. He eventually finished in a tie for 20th at the LECOM Suncoast Classic, which earned him a spot in next week’s tournament.

He missed the cut despite posting a 4-under par score through 36 holes. But Russell made a lasting impression—so much so that the Rocket Mortgage Classic offered him a sponsor’s exemption to compete in this week’s event at the Detroit Golf Club.

“I was pretty much speechless at the time,” Russell said when he received the call that he would make his PGA Tour debut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

“It’s always been a dream to play at the highest level and compete with the best players in the world, and I get to do that this week. I am really looking forward to it.”

Russell has quite a resume. He broke par for the first time at the age of six and then finished second in the Drive, Chip, and Putt finals at Augusta National in 2018 at nine years old.

Since then, Russell has racked up numerous junior titles. He won the Junior PGA Championship last August by seven strokes and then added a Junior Players Championship title at TPC Sawgrass , where he won by three. As such, Russell won the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Player of the Year Award, becoming the youngest player ever to do so—besting Tiger Woods in the process. Speaking of Woods, Russell will join Charlie Woods at next month’s U.S. Junior Amateu r, which will also take place in Michigan at Oakland Hills Country Club.

“I don’t know how to describe it other than just a rollercoaster, and it’s just been a rollercoaster of just fun,” Russell said.

“It all happened a little faster than I thought it might, but it’s just what happens when you have good play.”

Russell will undoubtedly continue to have fun this week at Detroit Golf Club, the host of the Rocket Mortgage Classic, regardless of the result. He said he will have to rely on his short game—his strong suit—to get around this tight golf course, but he also noted that staying disciplined will be critical.

“My goal is just to come out here and have fun,” Russell said.

“That’s my main goal: have fun, maybe learn something, and take something to my next event.”

Last summer, The Eagles announced their final concert trek, The Long Goodbye Tour. The venture is over, but fans still have a few chances to catch the band one more time before they put their instruments down for good.

The rock group recently extended their upcoming residency again, apparently due to “overwhelming demand,” according to a press release. The band is planning on wrapping their performing career at the Sphere in Las Vegas, and as dates sell out, they continue to add more and more, as their followers can’t seem to get enough.

The Eagles will now play four concerts this coming December. For two weekends in a row—December 6 through 7 and 13 through 14—they’ll headline the Sphere, and these may be the absolute final dates for the group.

The rock outfit’s Las Vegas residency is set to begin on Friday, September 20. They already have six weekends of Friday and Saturday shows lined up throughout that month, as well as in both October and November.

A press release announcing the new concerts states that tickets will go on sale to the general public on Friday, July 10 at 10:00 PST. An Artist Presale signup begins the day prior, and certain VIP packages will also become available that same day.

The Eagles are set to become just the fourth act to headline the Sphere. U2 inaugurated the venue in September 2023, when the Irish rockers started their highly successful U2: Achtung Baby Live at Sphere run. That 40-date project ended up netting a little more than $240 million in ticket grosses.

After U2, Phish took over. The jam band only played four dates in April 2024, and they were quickly followed by another well-known name in their field. Dead & Company’s Dead Forever: Live at Sphere started in May, and at the moment, it’s scheduled to continue through August.

The Eagles have announced a fall 2024 residency at Sphere in Las Vegas, Nevada, that includes 16 concerts over eight weekends in September-December. Getty Images

The Eagles announced their residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas earlier this month.

A week later, more concerts were added because of “overwhelming demand.”

Today, Live Nation has reported that another four concerts have been added because that demand continues to be high. Those added are Dec. 6 and 7 and Dec. 13 and 14 bringing the total number of concerts to 16 over eight weekends, Sept. 20 to Dec. 14.

Tickets for the newly announced dates go on sale on Friday, July 12, 2024, on Ticketmaster.

Ticket prices start at $175 and include all taxes and fees.

Fans also can find tickets on the secondary market at  Stubhub ,   SeatGeek and  Vivid Seats.

The Venetian Resort, the only resort attached to Sphere, is offering special experience and hotel packages that include a two-night stay, concert tickets, priority entry and keepsakes. Reservations can be made via  Vibee.

The six-time Grammy Award winning Eagles started their “Long Goodbye Farewell Tour” in the fall of 2023.

The band has sold more than 150 million albums, has had six No. 1 albums and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.

When announcing the farewell tour, the band said on its blog, they “want to give all of our fans a chance to see us on this final round.”

The band had said it “will perform as many shows in each market as their audience demands. The tour is expected to continue into 2025.”

The Eagles are Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmit, with Vince Gill and Deacon Frey.

The founder of The Eagles, Glenn Frey, died Jan. 18, 2016.

Taylor Swift Reacts After Again Swallowing a Bug Onstage During Eras Tour Show

Taylor Swift encountered an unexpected interruption during her 10-minute version of "All Too Well" performance during her third consecutive night at London's Wembley Stadium.

As she reached the line, "and forget why I needed to," Swift suddenly coughed, startling the crowd of 89,000 fans.

"I swallowed a bug, can you sing?" she asked the concertgoers, her voice tinged with humor despite the momentary setback. The packed stadium didn't miss a beat, enthusiastically taking over for Swift, and transforming the mishap into a unique moment.

This isn't the first time the "Miss Americana" singer has been thwarted by a pesky insect on her massive Eras Tour. Last June in Chicago, Swift briefly turned away from the audience during her performance at Soldier Field after a bug flew into her mouth mid-song.

"Is there any chance none of you saw that?" she quipped to the amused Chicago crowd.

Stammering, she continued, "It's fine, it's all, it's -- I've swallowed it." With a laugh, Swift added, "So I'm just gonna try not to do as many of those. This is gonna happen again, there's so many bugs. There's a thousand of them. Anyway, this has been fun."

On Sunday, the 34-year-old "London Boy" crooner hit the stage for the third and final time at Wembley Stadium this month as part of her Eras tour, and welcomed another crop of big-name celebrities to the VIP tent, including The Beatles' Paul McCartney and her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce -- who attended all three nights and even hit the stage. The visits came after Swift performed her first two shows on Friday and Saturday, welcoming more than 160,000 fans between the two days -- including Prince William and his two older children .

Also in attendance on Sunday was Swift's friend and collaborator, Gracie Abrams, as well as Jon Bon Jovi, Ellie Goulding, Sophie Turner and several other stars. Given Swift's connection to the U.K. capital -- she lived in London on and off with Joe Alwyn , her ex-boyfriend of six years -- it's no surprise just how many famous friends turned out over the course of the three-day stop.

Those who missed out on the first London leg (featuring chicken tenders with seemingly ranch ) will have a chance to catch the Eras Tour at Wembley Stadium in August, when Swift returns for five more shows before she officially says "So Long, London" and heads back to the U.S. for tour dates in New Orleans, Miami and Indianapolis.

Inevitable Scottie Scheffler succeeds again, wins sixth title of year at Travelers Championship

Change Text Size

CROMWELL, Conn. – Scott Scheffler Sr. looked over the 18th green, perched 30 yards left on a large hill that frames the stadium-style finishing hole at TPC River Highlands. Pacing back and forth, he anxiously and eagerly awaited what was about to play out.

His son, Scottie Scheffler, was down below, circling his ball 11 feet from the hole for birdie on the Travelers Championship’s first playoff hole. Tom Kim, who 15 minutes earlier birdied the 18th to force a playoff, had just bladed his bunker shot well past the pin and missed the comebacker for par.

Scheffler was 11 feet and two putts between him and his sixth victory of the season.

Scott settled into his ideal viewing spot, nestled between the side of the grandstands and a ShotLink tower. That crevice of viewing area, though, was the lone angle for a group of excitable fans lurking some 20 feet behind Scott to watch the proceedings.

“Hey, move out of the way,” one fan shouted.

Scott waved his hand to apologize and kneeled down, blocking his view in the process. He laughed and shrugged, realizing then that he didn’t need to see what would happen. He has watched a similar scene play out more than a few times in recent months. Those fans hadn’t. They deserved to see it. The sound would tell the story anyway.

“C’mon Scottie, hit it soft,” he implored.

Moments later, the silence broke. The roars reached a crescendo and sustained. Scott knew what that meant. His son had listened.

Scott jumped up, pumped his fist and looked back toward the clubhouse. Scheffler’s wife Meredith and their 6-week-old son Bennett were waiting inside until the tournament was sealed. Scott waved them up, then took his first look down the hill as his son hugged caddie Ted Scott. It was over.

Scottie Scheffler wins in a playoff at Travelers

Scheffler bested Kim on the first playoff hole to win the Travelers Championship after both carded 22-under 258 at TPC River Highlands. It’s Scheffler’s sixth win of the season. He is the quickest to accomplish the feat since Arnold PaImer in 1962. Three other players – Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh and Nick Price – have won at least six times in a season since 1983, but none have done it as fast as Scheffler.

“It was a great finish. This golf course produces a lot of those, you know, the exciting stuff coming down the stretch,” Scheffler said. “It was a lot of fun and I'm proud to be sitting here with the trophy.”

Scheffler has stuffed a Hall of Fame-worthy career into a matter of four months – winning four Signature Events, THE PLAYERS Championship and the Masters. He’s up to 12 career TOUR victories, all since February 2022. The dominant run is unmatched in this generation outside of Woods. There’s still a long way to go before reaching that tier, but Scheffler is on one of his own now.

Scottie Scheffler’s dominance continues to impress fellow peers

The world No. 1 does his best to sidestep that reality when asked about it. He’d rather focus on the process, not the results. Winning does not define him, even if the victories roll in at record pace. He has the luxury to ignore it. Everyone around him doesn’t. They are acutely aware. Wyndham Clark, Ludvig Åberg, Collin Morikawa, Sahith Theegala and Kim are painfully aware. They are the runners-up – those who played phenomenally but not perfectly – whose performances will be lost to time. Perfect golf is, by nature, incredibly difficult to cultivate. And to beat this version of Scheffler, you must be perfect.

“The elite level for you to win out here, it's very, very small,” Kim said. His mind raced to two three-putts, one on Saturday's fourth hole and the other on the eighth hole on Sunday. Those were his only two bogeys. They were the difference.

“When you're going against Scottie, who I know very, very well, I knew that today I had to play really good golf and I felt like I did,” Kim said.

Scottie Scheffler’s Round 4 winning highlights from Travelers

Scheffler’s really good golf is simply better.

Given that, it would be disingenuous to assert Scheffler is sneaking up on anyone. Those days, if they ever existed, are long gone. He’s the unquestioned best player in the world, and the gap is undeniably large. But there’s a certain quality to golf tournaments that can lull even the trained golf watcher into expecting a different outcome. At points early on Sunday, Scheffler wasn’t top of mind. He parred the first five holes while others assumed the spotlight. Cameron Young birdied his first four holes, pushing himself squarely into the mix after his Saturday 59. Akshay Bhatia and Xander Schauffele made early birdies to tie Kim, who began the day with a one-shot lead. Meanwhile, Scheffler was stuck in neutral. That’s nowhere to be at the gettable TPC River Highlands.

But just as soon as you’re convinced the inevitable outcome may not happen this time, that Scheffler may quietly fade, there’s a moment when it all becomes clear and any previous notion that someone else would win the golf tournament feels silly. That moment came about halfway through Sunday’s round. Scheffler broke the seal with birdies at the par-5 sixth and par-4 seventh to get to 19-under, tied for the lead. Then Kim bogeyed the eighth, and suddenly Scheffler held control. He never relinquished it. Within the next hour, every notable challenger stumbled. Schauffele bogeyed Nos. 7 and 9. Bhatia dropped a shot at the ninth. Young made a double bogey at the 12th and Finau rinsed his tee shot on the par-3 16th and made double.

Kim was the lone challenger who withstood. He bounced back with a birdie on the 10th and matched Scheffler with birdies on the 13th and 15th. But Scheffler also birdied the 14th, which proved the one-shot cushion as they headed to 18. Kim nearly delivered his 2017 Jordan Spieth moment with his approach shot, scaring the hole for an eagle and a possible walk-off victory. Kim converted the birdie and Scheffler narrowly missed a birdie of his own, pushing the tournament to extra holes.

We know what came next. Kim blinked. Scheffler didn’t. He hasn’t for months.

SMOOTH JAZZ THERAPY: Fourplay Bring Down The Curtain On Another Great Thornton Winery Season

by fourplay on Oct.16, 2010, under News , Press &Reviews

In fact, since 1991, when keyboardist Bob James, guitarist Lee Ritenour, bass player Nathan East, and drummer Harvey Mason first came together for James’ critically acclaimed ‘Grand Piano Canyon’, this all-star collective has been the one genuine super-group in contemporary jazz. Larry Carlton took over the guitarist’s spot to coincide with the bands successful 1998 album ‘4’ and in turn has now been replaced by Chuck Loeb.

Fourplay’s late evening set at Thornton Winery served in part as an early showcase for the new CD ‘Let’s Touch The Sky’ and it was the scintillating guitar of ‘new boy’ Loeb with his composition ‘3rd Degree’ that put down an early marker. Not only is this a tune where the title describes Loeb’s position as the bands third guitarist but also a breathtaking example of how the evolution of Fourplay has been built upon the way in which both individually and collectively the players expertly interpret their own immaculate compositions.

https://fbcdn-profile-a.akamaihd.net/hprofile-ak-snc4/188149_143400575722309_4083639_n.jpg

Next to do much the same was the constantly excellent Nathan East who used own song ‘I’ll Still Be Loving You’ to exercise his soulful but oft under-used singing voice. He was joined on vocals by none other than Harvey Mason’s daughter Heather while Mason’s ‘Pineapple Getaway’ also proved to be an inspired selection.

A further Mason tune came in the form of the enticing ‘Argentina’. Taken from the 2008 CD ‘Energy’ it found Bob James on piano at his shimmering best and as Fourplay continued to turn back the clock, the crowd were thrilled by gems such as the seminal ‘101 Eastbound’ from its 1991 eponymous debut and the memorable ‘Chant’ which can be found on the band’s 1993 sophomore release ‘Between The Sheets’. Nostalgia was certainly in the damp October air and this was confirmed when for the obligatory encore number the audience was captivated one last time by the wonderful Bob James classic ‘Westchester Lady’.

It proved to be a fitting end to an evening when this high class quartet conclusively demonstrated that, while in their custody, the contemporary jazz genre is in extremely caring hands.
