La legendaria banda de rock mexicano EL TRI festeja más de cinco décadas de carrera ininterrumpida con su gira “Alex Lora – EL TRI 55 aniversario y todo sea por el rocanrol” en la Arena CDMX el 1 de Octubre y en la Arena Monterrey el 30 de Noviembre. Forma parte de un gran festejo donde los guitarrazos no han dejado de sonar desde que la emblemática banda inició su carrera en 1968 como ‘Three Souls in my Mind’ participando en conciertos como aquel legendario concierto en Avándaro, hasta llegar a tocar con la Orquesta Sinfónica Metropólitana y ser nominados a cinco premios Grammys en la categoría de Mejor Álbum de Rock en Español, recorriendo prácticamente el mundo entero con canciones que describen de forma única la manera en la que ven la vida.

Un show en el que los guitarrazos sonarán bien fuerte y el rocanrol retumbará en uno de los recintos más emblemáticos de la CDMX.

Este 2023, se viene “ 55 aniversario y todo por el rocanrol ”, la gira de El Tri con la que celebran sus años rockeando.

Un festejo en el que la banda recorrerá desde sus inicios en 1968 como Three Souls in my Mind y su legendario show en Avándaro.

Hasta llegar a tocar con la Orquesta Sinfónica Metropolitana y ser nominados a cinco premios Grammy en la categoría de Mejor Álbum de Rock en Español.

Una trayectoria que los ha llevado a recorrer el mundo entero para cantar esas rolitas que describen de forma única la manera en la que ven la vida.

Asimismo, algunas canciones como ‘ Las Piedras rodantes’ , ‘ ADO ‘ y ‘ Oye Cantinero ‘ se escucharán en este concierto, las cuales seguramente será coreadas por los fans de la agrupación.

Vigente y lleno de energía, Alex Lora y toda la banda de El Tri, regresarán a la CDMX para celebrar un año más de rodar y rolar.

• Dónde: Arena CDMX (Av. de las Granjas 800, Santa Bárbara, Azcapotzalco).
• Costo: $377 – $1506 más cargos.

El Tri (formed in 1968) is a pioneering Mexican rock and roll, psychedelic and blues rock band, hailing from Mexico City, Mexico.

Originally formed under the moniker “Three Souls in My Mind” due to the appeal of a long band name, the group was initially comprised of Alejandro Lora on bass, Memo Berea on lead guitar and vocals, Ernesto de Leon on lead guitar, and Carlos Hauptvogel on the drums.

The band’s first live performance came in 1969 to a positive response, and the group subsequently made a their mark at Festival de Avándaro, ‘America’s Woodstock' in 1971 with a combination of English- and Spanish-language rock songs. By playing rock songs in Spanish, the band introduced the themes of rock and roll to a huge Spanish speaking audience, providing the groundwork for the influx of rock in to Mexico. The band spent the next 14 years recording and performing under the Three Souls in My Mind name, until in 1985 the name and line-up underwent notable changes.

With a line up consisting Alejandro Lora, Chela Lora and Eduardo Chico, El Tri’s debut album “Simplemente el Tri” (1985), earned the threesome gold certification – the first ever Mexican rock band to do so. The album spawned the singles “Triste Canción de Amor” and “Vicioso del Rocanrol” and led to a tour of considerable size including dates in the the U.S. The band cemented their success in Mexico and in large parts of South America as a whole with their 18 subsequent studio albums, 10 live albums, and four compilation albums.

Due to this international success El Tri have played a host of sold-out arenas shows such as the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, The Olympic Auditorium, and the Hollywood Palladium. Despite this success and influence on Mexican rock, the band has never been certified more than gold record due to labels struggling to be able to compete with counterfeiters.

Rising from the ashes from Alex Lora’s old band Three Souls in my Mind, Mexican psychedelic rock band El Tri rejuvenated their music after meandering through several genres before they solidified their definitive bluesy rock sound in 1985. Taking their name from the three colours of the flag, El Tri became the first Mexican rock band to achieve a gold certified album after releasing their album ‘Simplemente’ which featured their first single ‘Triste Cancion. Their 1986 hit ‘Vicioso del rocanrol’ loosely translated as ‘vicious rock and roll’ became a huge success in Peru as it stormed its way onto the radio charts securing their popularity in Chile, Venezula, Argentina and of course Spain. During their career they successful forayed in to North America introducing their sound not only to the Americans but to its Latin community. In 2003 they were nominated for Best Album at the Latin Grammy Awards. Labelled as Mexico’s answer to The Rolling Stones, El Tri have created a huge milestone for Latin Rock.

Used to playing two and a half hour shows, their Spanish inspired blues rock sound has won over a legion of fans. The fans mean everything to the band, as they look to them for inspiration for themes explored in their songs. Playing to thousands of passionate fans in arenas all over the Americas really brings out the best in the band as they are greeted with screams as the audience sing along word for word. With their simple and genuine melodies and Lora’s heartrending tone, you’re bound to fall in love with El Tri as they sweep you off your feet.

You are unlikely to see many fanbases so dedicated and commanded by their musical heroes as during an El Tri show. The Mexican psych-rock/blues outfit are slowly approaching their fiftieth anniversary since formation and it would seem that every decade they have managed to expand their fanbase regardless of their moderate commercial success. Incredibly the six original members remain present tonight and therefore they have one of the best onstage dynamics you are likely to see. They do not only know their own instrumentals like complete experts but also the instrumentals of every other member onstage.

All the music simply melds together in expert mannerism whilst Alex Lora concentrates on making the crowd the final piece to the puzzle as they sway, jump and fist pump on demand depending on the tracks played. It is a fantastic show held together by this band of experts who have successfully influenced the genre of latino rock and psych-blues as a whole. It is not known how much longer these members will be able to tour so make sure you see them whilst you still can.

Here Are All the Tours You Can’t Miss in 2023

What’s a new year’s resolution list without catching a live show by our favorite Latine artists on it? Though it seems impossible to surpass last year’s memorable tours, such as Bad Bunny’s World’s Hottest Tour and Karol G’s steamy $trip Love Tour , the already announced tours for this year will surely make 2023 just as epic. 

We ended 2022 with exciting tour announcements, such as Rauw Alejandro’s joint tour with JABBAWOCKEEZ and a rumored RBD reunion tour , but there’s much more to look forward to as artists roll out their tour announcements. With that being said, here’s an ongoing list of all the Latine tours that you can’t miss in 2023.

Maná (Feb. 10 to Dec. 1) – The Mexican rock stars are back at it again. They’re set to take their new México Lindo y Querido Tour throughout the U.S., hitting up major cities like Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, and Las Vegas. The band recently expanded their tour , adding cities like Austin and Philadelphia for their first-ever headlining shows.

Banda MS (Feb. 24 to Dec. 2) – The Mexican banda group is celebrating its 20 years of musical trajectory with a tour in Mexico and the U.S. In this tour, the popular band will travel to cities like Nashville, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Houston before ending their tour in Fort Myers.

Grupo Frontera (Apr. 20 to Nov. 25) – The emerging norteño group is embarking on their El Comienzo tour. They will present their music in major cities like Las Vegas, NV; San Diego, CA; El Paso, TX; Atlanta, GA; and Los Angeles, CA.

Intocable (May 26 to Nov. 25) – The emblematic Regional Mexican band is back with their Evolución tour. The tour will start in Seattle, WA, and stop in cities like San Diego, CA; Las Vegas, NV; Los Angeles, CA; and Hidalgo, TX.

Fuerza Regida (July 7 to Nov. 25) – The regional Mexican music group is taking their concert party across the U.S. On their upcoming Otra Peda Tour , Fuerza Regida will hit major cities like Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago, and Las Vegas, before wrapping it up in Anaheim.

Pepe Aguilar (July 21 to Nov. 25) – The iconic Mexican singer is performing on selected solo dates throughout 2023. He’s performing in cities like Fresno, New York City, Austin, and Portland. This year, he’s also performing with his children Ángela, Leonardo, and Antonio on their Jaripeo Sin Fronteras tour.

Luis Miguel (Aug. 3 to Dec. 17) – El Sol de México finally released the highly-anticipated dates for his upcoming tour throughout the U.S. and Latin America. The global 43-city tour will grace the stages of Argentina, Chile, the U.S., and Mexico.

RBD  (Aug. 25 to Dec. 1) – The iconic pop group officially  confirmed their long-awaited comeback with a final tour.  RBD is back with their Soy Rebelde Tour 2023 and is set to perform in arenas and stadiums across the US, Brazil, and Mexico. The five confirmed members will start in El Paso, TX, and play their final show in Mexico City.

Panteón Rococó (Sep. 3 to Dec. 30) – The emblematic Mexican ska group is making its way through the U.S. Featured tour stops include performances in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and more cities.

Sin Bandera (Sep. 7 to Dec. 9) – Sin Bandera is celebrating their 20 years of hits. Their Frecuencia Tour includes cities like Laredo, El Paso, Inglewood, Nashville, New York, and more.

Deorro (Sept. 15 to Dec. 14) – The Mexican-American DJ and producer is closing his year with his Carta de Amor Tour . He will hit cities like Las Vegas, Fresno, Dallas, Orlando, and Los Angeles.

Jhayco (Sep. 28 to Dec. 10) – The Puerto Rican reggaeton singer is embarking on his Vida Rockstar Tour this fall. The upcoming 16-city trek includes stops in Boston, Chicago, San Antonio, Los Angeles, and Miami.

Marca MP (Oct. 6 to Mar. 9) – The bicultural regional Mexican group is performing live in 11 cities throughout the U.S . The new trek includes Atlanta, El Paso, Palm Desert, and more cities.

Myke Towers (Oct. 8 to Nov. 26) – The Puerto Rican rapper is back with his La Vida Es Una Tour . The highly-anticipated 21-city tour will stop in Chicago, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, El Paso, Miami, and many more cities.

Rawayana (Oct. 11 to Nov. 24) – The Venezuelan band is currently on their world tour . Their U.S. leg starts in St. Petersburg, FL, on Oct. 11 and will wrap up in Puerto Rico on Nov. 25.

El Tri (Oct. 11 to Feb. 18) – The iconic Mexican rock band is celebrating its 55th anniversary with a tour across the U.S. El Tri will perform in cities like Seattle, Houston, Anaheim, Las Vegas, and Phoenix, to name a few.

El Alfa (Oct. 12 to Dec. 15) – The Dominican powerhouse is bringing his signature dembow to the U.S. His La Leyenda del Dembow Tour will kick off in Houston, TX, on Oct. 12 and will continue to major cities like Los Angeles, New York, and Miami before wrapping up in Chicago, IL, on Dec. 15.

Justin Quiles (Oct. 12 to Dec. 17) – The Puerto Rican-American reggaeton artist is embarking on his Niveles Tour in Laredo, TX, on Oct. 12. The tour will take him to Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York, before wrapping up in New Jersey on Dec. 17.

The Trilogy Tour (Oct. 14 to Dec. 10) – Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias, and Pitbull will join forces for The Trilogy Tour this year. The highly-anticipated tour will start in Washington, DC, on Oct. 14 and end in Vancouver, BC, on Dec. 10.

Café Tacvba (Oct. 14 to Dec. 1) – The iconic Mexican alternative rock band is ending their 2023 with a tour. They will perform in cities like Miami, Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte, and Porterville.

DannyLux (Nov. 11 to Dec. 3) – The Mexican-American singer-songwriter is going to the East Coast to end the year on a high note. He will perform in cities like Atlanta, Nashville, New York, and more.

Mariah Carey (Nov. 15 to Dec. 17) – The iconic singer is going on a holiday tour . Her Merry Christmas One And All! Tour will reach venues in Los Angeles, CA; Denver, CO; Chicago, IL; New York, NY; and more.

Mariachi Sol de México (Nov. 18 to Dec. 23) – The Latin Grammy-nominated Maestro José Hernández and his world-renowned Mariachi Sol de México are going on their annual Christmas tour . They will hit cities like San Jose and San Francisco, CA, Seattle, WA, and more.

Mora (Nov. 24 to Dec. 10) – The Puerto Rican star is coming to the U.S. at the end of the year. He will embark on the U.S. leg of his ESTELA TOUR 2023 in Orlando, FL, on Nov. 24. The tour will take him to venues in San Diego, Atlanta, Houston, and more cities.

Kenia Os (Feb. 22 to Mar. 26) – The Mexican mega pop star will be touring the U.S. for the first time with her K23 Tour . She recently added four new dates to her now 19-city tour schedule: Atlanta, GA; Charlotte, NC; Orlando, FL; and Miami, FL.

Los Tigres del Norte (Feb. 24 to Apr. 29) – The iconic norteño band will embark on their Siempre Contigo Tour on Feb. 24, starting in Chesterfield, MO, and ending on Apr. 29 in Anaheim, CA.

Enjambre (Feb. 25 to Mar. 12) – One of the most recognized Mexican-American bands, Enjambre , is touring the U.S. this year. They are visiting major cities like Manhattan, NY, Chicago, IL, Seattle, WA, and El Paso, TX.

iLe  (Mar. 3 to Mar. 23) – The Puerto Rican singer, composer, and vocalist is set to tour in March. She will perform in selected cities such as Washington, DC, New York, NY, Chicago, IL, Los Angeles, CA, and Austin, TX.

OV7 (Mar. 2 to 26) – The Mexican pop group OV7 is celebrating their 30 years together on tour. The OV7 Treinta Años Tour will stop in cities like San Antonio and El Paso, TX, Las Vegas, NV, and New York, NY.

Ibeyi (Mar. 10 to Apr. 2) – For the first time ever, the French-Cuban twin sisters are performing with a live band in major cities like Seattle, Chicago, Brooklyn, Atlanta, and Miami on their Spell 31 Tour .

Pierce The Veil (Mar. 27 to Apr. 9) – After nearly a decade, Pierce The Veil will be performing in Latin America, presenting their fifth album, The Jaws of Life . Their upcoming tour includes Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Brazil, and the U.S. Their U.S. leg–or better known as The Creative Control Tour – is alongside The Used, and other special guests.

Kim Loaiza & JD Pantoja (Mar. 31 to Apr. 15) – Loaiza and Pantoja will share stages for special dates in the U.S. They will perform their Bye Bye Tour in Chicago, IL, on Mar. 31; New York, NY, on Apr. 1; Houston, TX, on Apr. 13; and Los Angeles, CA on Apr.15.

Girl Ultra (Apr. 6 to 16) – The Mexican R&B artist will be joined by Mexican singer Foudeqush , and Tijuana-originated band Mint Field on a month-long U.S. tour this spring. They will start in San Antonio, TX, and make their way to Berkeley, CA.

BRATTY (Apr. 12 to Apr. 30) – Along with the release of her newest body of work, Es Mi Fiesta Y Si Quiero Hago Un EP , the Mexican artist is going on tour during the month of Apr. Besides Coachella, her upcoming tour will reach cities like Oakland, Los Angeles, Phoenix, El Paso, and Austin.

Tei Shi (Apr. 13 to 26) – Besides supporting Kimbra on tour, the Colombian-Canadian singer-songwriter will also go on a solo tour to promote her upcoming BAD PREMONITION EP this year. She’s set to start her North American tour on Apr. 13 in New York City and wrap it up in San Francisco, CA.

Los Bitchos (Apr. 14 to May 2) – The UK-based indie cumbia-inspired band unveiled their U.S. tour dates. The tour includes stops in San Diego, CA, Coachella, Las Vegas, NV, and New York, NY.

Rauw Alejandro & JABBAWOCKEEZ (Mar. 4 to May 6) – During last year’s Latin Grammys, these two acts gave us a taste of their collaborative abilities. And this year, they will show us more of it with a world tour that’ll take us into Rauw’s Saturno Tour .

Kinky (Apr. 29 to May 6) – Kinky, known for very energetic shows, is going on their Fierro U.S. Tour starting Apr. 29. The band formed in Monterrey, Mexico, will play in selected cities like San Diego and Los Angeles, CA; Houston, TX; and Chicago, IL.

Jackie Mendoza (Mar. 16 to May 8) – The California-based singer-songwriter is not only releasing her debut album Galaxia de Emociones this spring, but she’s also bringing the songs to life for her fans. Isabella Lovestory (Mar. 16 to May 10) – The Honduran artist is going on tour in the U.S. to promote her new music and her latest album Amor Hardcore . Flor de Toloache (Apr. 15 to July 15) – The mariachi band will perform 10 dates in the U.S. They will hit cities like Littletown, NC, Orange, CA, and Brooklyn, NY, as part of their newest tour. They will also perform selected dates with Mariachi Vargas.

Danna Paola (Aug. 11 to Sep. 16) – The Mexican pop star is finally coming to the U.S. for the first time! Her XT4S1S Tour stops include San Jose, Los Angeles, Miami, Rosemont, New  York, and more selected dates.

Ryan Castro (Sep. 1 to 22) – The Colombian hitmaker unveiled his Ghetto Star USA Tour dates. The tour will take him to cities like Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles, and many more.

Pasadena, Miami, and New Jersey will host a second show. In a recent tour update, the Colombian star added six new dates, including San Francisco, Chicago, and Orlando.

Cimafunk (Aug. 3 to Oct. 1) – The Afro-Cuban artist will start his tour in Brooklyn, NY, on Aug. 3. He will then perform in cities like Amagansett, NY, Newport, RI, and San Jose, CA, before wrapping up his tour in Jacksonville, FL, on Sep. 16. Pabllo Vittar (June 23 to Oct. 2) – The Brazilian drag queen and pop singer is coming to North America! Ambar Lucid (Sep. 15 to Oct. 6) – The Mexican-Dominican-American artist is going on her North American ESTRELLA Part 2 Tour this fall. Alejandro Fernández (Sept. 8 to Oct. 22) – El Portillo is back with a tour dedicated to his late father, Vicente Fernández. During most of his shows, he’s continuing his family’s signature father-son tradition, bringing along his own son, Alex Fernández. The anticipated tour will start in Sacramento, CA, on Sept. 8 and conclude in Miami, FL, on Oct. 22.

Gipsy Kings & Tonino Baliardo (Oct. 25 to Nov. 12) – The renowned Catalan band will hit the road in October and November. They will perform at venues in Arizona, Texas, Tennessee, and Connecticut, to name a few stops of their Renaissance Tour .

Romeo Santos (Oct. 4 to Nov. 14) – The King of Bachata is performing his Fórmula Vol. 3 Tour this fall. He will start the highly-anticipated tour in Fresno, CA, on Oct. 4 and wrap it up in Atlanta, GA, on Nov. 14 before making his way to Canada.

Siddhartha (May 24 to Nov. 15) – The Mexican alternative rocker is set to embark on his U.S. tour on May 24 in San Francisco, CA. He will perform in major cities like Los Angeles, Atlanta, New York City, and Las Vegas. The tour ends on Nov. 15 in Seattle, WA.

Ana Barbara (Aug. 31 to Nov. 18) – The Mexican singer’s U.S. leg of her Bandidos Tour starts in Monterey, CA, on Aug. 8 and wraps up in Chicago, IL, on Nov. 18. Selected tour dates also feature Majo Aguilar.

La Doña (Sep. 20 to Nov. 18) – The Chicana experimental artist is hitting the road to promote her newest EP . The Can’t Eat Clout Tour will embark in New York on Sep. 20. It will continue with performances in San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and more.

Edith Márquez (Jan. 28 to Nov. 19) – The Mexican songstress is currently on a tour through Mexico and the U.S. The tour’s U.S. leg starts in Santa Barbara, CA, on Aug. 5, and will conclude in Phoenix, AZ, on Nov. 19.

Jaripeo Sin Fronteras Tour (Aug. 4 to Nov. 19) – Besides performing alone on selected dates, Pepe Aguilar will also bring his Jaripeo Sin Fronteras tour to the U.S. this year. The popular tour features performances alongside his children Ángela, Leonardo, and Antonio. The tour will start on Aug. 4 in Lauderdale, FL, and finalize on Nov. 19 in Sacramento, CA.

Luna Luna (Sept. 23 to Nov. 19) – The Austin-based band is wrapping up their 2023 with their Solo Tu Tour alongside Michael Seyer . The indie synth-pop music makers will hit major cities like Portland, Los Angeles, El Paso, Chicago, Atlanta, and Nashville.

Amid all the controversy, rumours and debate, Mexico are headed for their eight consecutive FIFA World Cup™ with one objective in mind: to progress beyond the Round of 16 after falling at that hurdle on every one of their previous seven appearances. Determined to think big and shake off a relatively inauspicious showing in the qualifiers, this hotbed of football is dreaming of winning the biggest prize in the game.

Despite failing to perform to the expectations of the fans and the football media, Mexico still managed to place second in the eight-team final qualifying round behind Canada. Given that outcome and the fact that El Tri won the Concacaf Gold Cup in 2019 and finished runners-up in the competition last year, you could be forgiven for thinking that the criticism that has been coming their way is unfair, even if they failed to fulfil all their potential on the road to Qatar 2022.

Now that they have booked their ticket, the Mexicans can start plotting their way to success ahead of their opening match against Poland. Though uncertainty remains over who will make the trip, they have the personnel to go far, even if the likes of Robert Lewandowski and a powerful Argentina side led by Lionel Messi stand in their way in the group phase.

History has repeated itself in Mexico’s World Cup campaigns, with good group-phase showings being followed by successive last-16 exits. Their first task will be to claim one of the top two spots in the group, which will not be easy given the quality of the opposition. Clear that hurdle and they will have the chance to put their unwanted record to bed against one of the two qualifiers from Group D.

The Argentinian’s future as Mexico coach continues to be questioned, with sections of the media, fans and even some former internationals urging his removal. Martino has shrugged off the criticism, however, in his determination to pursue the objective he set out in the press conference that followed his appointment to the job: “I’m committed to the goal of reaching the quarter-finals at the World Cup but I want to put in place a system and a clear style of play before then.”

Martino has yet to make that system and style of play happen, at least not on a consistent basis. Part of the blame for that lies with a spate of injuries that will deprive him, for example, of the services of Jesus Corona in Qatar. Acknowledging the level of animosity against him, Martino said: “I’m not just a public enemy; I’m public enemy number one in Mexico.” His preferred system is 4-3-3 and he has largely stuck to it despite changing players and the roles and functions they perform.

Mexico’s main hope for a successful World Cup. ‘Chucky’, as he is known, played at Russia 2018 and came to the world’s attention on account of the chant dedicated to him by Tri fans, sung to the tune of The White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army. Though he can take up a number of attacking positions, including centre-forward, he is usually deployed wide on one of the flanks.

Lozano it was who scored the goal that gave El Tri an historic win over Germany in the group phase in Russia. A year after starring for his country in the world finals, the winger moved to Napoli for the highest fee ever paid for a Mexican player, and has now established himself in a side that currently leads the way in Serie A. Lightning fast when on the ball, Lozano has a gift for detecting space in behind defences and has the pace and skills to unsettle any back line. A large part of Mexico’s hopes rest on his talent.

One to watch: Diego Lainez One to watch: Diego Lainez

One of the youngest players in Martino’s side, Lainez is also regarded by the European football press as one of the most exciting teenage talents to emerge in the last five years. Though yet to fulfil his rich potential, he has what it takes to explode on to the scene in Qatar. After starring for America, he moved to Spain and Real Betis in 2019, where a lack of first-team opportunities ultimately led to him being loaned out this season to Portuguese club Braga, where he has sought to press his claims for a World Cup place.

An Olympic bronze medallist at Tokyo 2020, Lainez figures among Mexico’s brightest young stars of the moment. The wide man represented his country at every age level and excelled along the way thanks to his match-winning talent, which has led to him being dubbed ‘ The Mexican Messi’. Qatar 2022 could provide him with the opportunity to show the world what he can do. In an interview with The Athletic, former Tri coach Ricardo La Volpe, who has worked with Lainez, explained why he likened him to Messi: “Physically, they’re the same player. I’ve always compared Lainez to Messi because of his physical attributes, his dribbling skills and his intelligence as a creative player. He’s going to keep on improving. He’s very important to the future of Mexico.”

When it comes to the World Cup, Mexico are stuck on repeat. They have qualified from the group stage every time from USA 1994 onwards, only for their hopes to be dashed by painful defeat in the last 16, seven exits in a row for a nation with a growing obsession: to reach the last eight.

It looked as if that unfortunate run might come to an end at Russia 2018. El Tri kicked off with that famous win over defending champions Germany and maintained the feelgood factor with a 2-1 defeat of Korea Republic. Then came a comprehensive 3-0 loss to Sweden in their final group match, a result that consigned them to second place in Group F and a daunting round-of-16 tie with Brazil. Mexico duly bade farewell to the tournament with a 2-0 defeat and looked on enviously as the Swedes saw off Switzerland 1-0 to progress to the quarter-final. Mexico will be co-hosting the tournament in 2026, when they will look to reach the quarter-finals, something they have only achieved up to now when staging the competition, as they did in 1970 and again in 1986.

Los Ángeles se ha convertido en la segunda casa de Sergio Vallín, el talentoso guitarrista de la agrupación Maná, quien el pasado sábado se presentó junto a la banda tapatía en el Kia Forum como parte de su gira “Mexico, Lindo y Querido”.

Ese explosivo concierto de una de la bandas de rock español de México más importantes de la actualidad, se realizó un día después del cumpleaños número 51 de Vallín, el cual lo celebró en esta misma ciudad donde prácticamente estuvo viviendo durante la residencia que hizo el grupo el año pasado en el Kía Forum de Inglewood.

Curiosamente, Los Ángeles es la ciudad fuera de México donde mejor le va a la banda liderada por Fher Olvera e integrada, además de Vallín, por Juan Calleros y Álex González. Es aquí donde, precisamente, el público los considera como suyos. “Es nuestra segunda casa y tanto en lo profesional como lo personal estuve viviendo aquí. Es una ciudad única en el mundo”, le dijo Vallín a Los Angeles Times en Español durante un encuentro en el Gibson Showroom de esta ciudad.

El próximo año, Sergio estará celebrando tres décadas de haber llegado a la banda. Se dice fácil, pero la verdad es que 30 años en un grupo musical son 30 largos años. “Son tres décadas llenas de miles y miles de memorias maravillosas que me ha dado la carrera junto con la banda y me siento muy agradecido”, comentó el músico nacido en la ciudad de México, pero criado en Aguascalientes, un estado en el centro-norte de México, conocido por sus viñedos, su arquitectura colonial y sus aguas termales.

Vallín, nacido un 26 de mayo de 1972, llegó a los 13 años de edad a uno de los estados mexicanos más pequeños, conocido también como centro manufacturero de vinos de mesa, aguardiente y otros licores de frutas. A pesar de su pequeño tamaño, Aguascalientes cuenta con una rica tradición culinaria.

Pero la familia Vallín no llegó a Aguascalientes atraída por la belleza geográfica o arquitectónica del lugar, por los vinos o sus variados platos típicos, no. La verdad es que los padres de Sergio decidieron llevarlo junto a sus hermanos Rocío, Fernando y Emilio a vivir a la provincia como una manera de alejarlos de las tentaciones que se podían originar en una complicada y enorme metrópoli como siempre lo ha sido la Ciudad de México. Los Vallín vieron que sus hijos estaban creciendo y se los llevaron para ir en busca de un mejor futuro y sin los peligros de la capital. “Y ahí llegué a los 13 años. Y fue cuando empecé a estudiar guitarra clásica”, recordó Vallín sentado en un banco redondo con la inscripción de Gibson ubicado en el centro de la sala de exhibiciones.

Rodeado de los diferentes modelos de guitarras Gibson que estaban exhibidas en las paredes, Sergio nos contó que ya tocaba guitarra desde que vivía en la capital mexicana. De hecho a los 8 años de edad fue cuando comenzó su romance con la música al formar parte de un grupo musical local de estudiantes. Pero no fue sino hasta que llegó a Aguascalientes cuando esa pasión por la guitarra creció y comenzó a tomar forma. “Entré a la casa de la cultura, empecé a estudiar guitarra clásica y ahí quedé perdidamente enamorado de la música de la guitarra y ya no la solté”, nos contó emocionado el guitarrista que desde siempre admiró a The Beatles, The Rolling Stones y The Doors.

La llamada que le cambió el rumbo de su vida

La destreza de Sergio con las cuerdas le permitió darle clases particulares de guitarra a otros jóvenes de su misma edad. Pero luego, el talento que también tenían sus hermanos los llevó a formar una agrupación a la que decidieron llamar Wando. A la edad de 21 años, Sergio y los Wando participaron en el festival de valores juveniles y al final lograron el primer lugar de la competencia. En ese mismo certamen una joven llamada Ana Bárbara , hoy convertida en la “reina de la música grupera”, también se llevó el primer puesto, pero en la categoría individual.

Todo esto surgió en paralelo cuando en una tarde de ensayos en la casa de sus padres, el teléfono en la casa de los Vallín repicó y la madre de Sergio le dijo que un tal Fher Olvera, del grupo Maná, quería hablar con él. Por supuesto, la llamada sorprendió a Sergio, pues no podía creer que el líder de una de las bandas de rock en español de México lo estaba llamando por teléfono.

“Llevaba mi Walkman con un cassette y le dije ‘Kiko (Cibrian) yo te admiro mucho y me gustaría tomar clases contigo’. Me respondió que era imposible porque estaría de tour. Pero luego me dijo, ‘déjame tu cassette’”

Mucho antes de esa llamada que cambiaría su vida para siempre, Sergio y los Wando ya tenían hambre de compartir y expresar con la gente lo que hacían con su música y aquel festival de talentos fue el empujón que les permitió una exposición importante a nivel nacional y seguir soñando con el éxito más allá de las fronteras locales.

Pero sí, la historia de Sergio en solitario cambió a partir de esa llamada, mientras sus hermanos continuaron con Wando por un tiempo. “Y fue cuando yo me fui con la banda Maná, mis hermanos siguieron un tiempo, pero fue una época muy bonita. Y mi historia cambió cuando me subí al tren de la banda”, recordó el guitarrista de larga cabellera y ojos pequeños frente a la cámara de Los Angeles Times en Español.

Pero ¿cómo llegó a oídos del líder de la banda Maná el talento de Sergio Vallín? Mucho se ha dicho al respecto y hasta han publicado que fue gracias a un concierto de Luis Miguel en el que conocieron a Kiko Cibrian, guitarrista y productor de algunos de los temas del Sol de México.

Pero lo cierto del caso, es que Sergio Vallín desde siempre fue admirador del talento de Kiko Cibrian, tanto como productor, como guitarrista. Y en una oportunidad en la que Luis Miguel se iba a presentar en concierto en Aguascalientes, a Sergio se le ocurrió ir en busca de su gran oportunidad.

Al enterarse de la llegada de Luismi a su ciudad, Sergio se puso a investigar en cuál hotel iban a llegar y sin pensarlo dos veces se lanzó en busca de Cibrian para mostrarle su talento con la guitarra. “Yo llevaba mi Walkman con un cassette y le dije ‘Kiko yo te admiro mucho y me gustaría tomar clases contigo’. Me respondió que era imposible porque estaría de tour. Pero luego me dijo, ‘déjame tu cassette”, recordó.

Esa misma noche Cibrián invitó a Sergio y a uno de sus hermanos que lo acompañaba para que asistieran al concierto de Luis Miguel. Ellos aceptaron la invitación, disfrutaron del concierto, pero al finalizar ahí quedó todo y se fueron a su casa decepcionados. Seis meses después llegó la inesperada llamada de Fher Olvera.

Resulta que el cassette que le habían entregado a Cibrián, pasó a manos de un productor de Los Ángeles llamado José “Pepe” Quintana, quien también había trabajado algunos proyectos con Luis Miguel y con Maná. Un día Fher le preguntó si conocía a un guitarrista y Quintana, (fallecido recientemente), le dijo que no, pero qué le preguntaría a Kiko Cibrian… El resto es historia.

Tras la audición con los integrantes de la banda, Sergio llegó para sustituir al guitarrista César López “El Vampiro”, justo en el momento que Fher, Álex y Juan habían decidido que serían un trío. “Pero llegué a la historia de Maná y me sumaron de inmediato”, nos contó.

“Con Maná siempre he tenido un terreno fértil, donde he podido plantar mis semillas e imaginate ya voy a cumplir 30 años el próximo año”, agregó con emoción.

Desde que pudo formar parte del grupo, Sergio ha vivido su propia historia con Maná y así fue que grabó “Cuando los ángeles lloran” (1995), el primer disco de estudio con Sergio como guitarrista principal.

Después participó en “Sueños Líquidos” (1997), “Maná MTV Unplugged” (1999), “Revolución de Amor” (2002), “Drama y Luz” (2011) y “Cama Incendiada” (2015).

También ha participado y ha hecho arreglos en algunos de los sencillos que la banda ha grabado y que formarán parte de un álbum de duetos que se ha dilatado para el resultado final, pero que incluye temas que ya han sido lanzado junto a artistas como Alejandro Fernández (“Mariposa Traicionera”) , Christian Nodal (“Te lloré un río”) , Joy Huerta (“Eres mi religion”), Pablo Alborán (“ Rayando el sol ”) y Mabel (“El reloj cucú”) , entre otros.

Muchos de los grandes temas del grupo han contado con la colaboración y algunas composiciones son de Sergio Vallín junto a Fher. De hecho debutó como compositor en “Sueños Liquidos” con el tema de influencia flamenca “Ámame hasta que muera” y como cantante, lo ha hecho en el álbum “Revolución de Amor” con el sencillo “¿Por qué te vas?”, dedicado a sus padres. “Eso fue más que nada circunstancial porque en esa época justamente mis padres habían fallecido y en ese momento me dijeron ‘cántala tú’ y esa fue mi participación como cantante”, aclaró Vallín.

También compuso el tema “No voy a ser tu esclavo” junto a Fher y tocó con Carlos Santana en el solo de guitarra de “Justicia Tierra y Libertad”. Para Sergio, la gira “Jalisco Power” junto a Carlos Santana tuvo un significado especial. Ya habían compuesto “Corazón Espinado” especialmente para Santana y tras esa experiencia Sergio admitió que tocar al lado del ídolo de su juventud ha sido uno de los momentos más gratificantes de toda su carrera.

En el álbum “Amar es Combatir” escribió “Somos Mar y Arena”, “Relax” y junto a Fher Olvera hicieron “Bendita tu Luz”, la cual se grabó con Juan Luis Guerra. “Pero el compositor principal en la banda es Fher, por supuesto Álex también compone y a mí también me han dado la oportunidad de componer. Hemos hecho algunas cosas juntos, otras no. En Maná somos una familia, somos un equipo, y en la lluvia de ideas surgió lo de invitar a Alejandro Fernández, a (Christian) Nodal y así nos hemos divertido mucho y pasando el tiempo haciendo lo que nos gusta”, compartió con una sonrisa.

Apoyo incondicional

Sergio Vallín, considerado uno de los mejores guitarristas latinos en la actualidad, confiesa que siempre ha encontrado apoyo de sus compañeros de la banda en las locuras que se le ocurren. La primera fue la creación de un álbum de concepto titulado “Bendito entre las mujeres” (2009), el cual fue compuesto y producido por el propio Vallín junto a Sebastián Krys. El disco contó con la participación de cantantes como la española Ana Torroja, Natalia Jiménez, Ely Guerra, Rosana, Joy Huerta, Raquel del Rosario, María José, Paulina Rubio y Janette Chao, entre otras.

La segunda “locura”, como él mismo lo llamó, fue “Microsinfonías”, un trabajo que lanzó en 2021 directamente en las plataformas musicales, pero ahora dos años después, “Microsinfonías” llega con otro rostro, con un formato en vinilo. “Es un disco que la mitad está inspirado en obras de compositores que admiro y la otra mitad es original. Y algo que hace muy valioso a este disco es que esos amigos que tengo de la música están ahí presentes, pero tocando. Nosotros los conocemos como cantantes y compositores, pero no en la parte instrumental”, señala el guitarrista.

Esos artistas a los que se refiere Vallín son Alejandro Sanz, Juan Luis Guerra, Marco Antonio Solís, Fher Olvera, pero también están instrumentistas como el violinista libanés Ara Malikian, la guitarrista clásica paraguaya Berta Rojas, el trompetista Arturo Sandoval y el guitarrista estadounidense Steve Vai, además de la participación de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Praga.

En este trabajo, “El Buki Mayor” Marco Antonio Solis, le pone su toque personal a las percusiones en el sencillo “Dónde estará mi primavera” que junto a las cuerdas de la guitarra Gibson signature Sergio Vallín 1955 Les Paul, suena en el formato vinilo con una textura que solamente lo pudo lograr el roce de la aguja sobre el disco.

El español Alejandro Sanz interpreta la guitarra flamenca en el tema “Cuando nadie me ve”, mientras que Juan Luis Guerra le da un toque de jazz en guitarra eléctrica a su clásica “Bachata rosa”.

Fher Olvera, amigo y compañero de Maná, toca la armónica en una interpretación magistral de “Vivir Sin Aire”, que cuenta con los arreglos de Vallín y Edy Lan.

Para las composiciones originales del álbum, Vallín invitó a la guitarrista clásica Berta Rojas y al guitarrista estadounidense Steve Vai, quien es conocido por haber realizado giras con Alcatrazz, David Lee Roth y Whitesnake. Vai también ha grabado con artistas como Public Image Ltd, Mary J. Blige, Spinal Tap, Alice Cooper, Motörhead y Polyphia, entre otros y además este guitarrista es una de las influencias más importantes en la carrera de Vallín.

Desde su creación, esta producción siempre tuvo unas características especiales por haber sido grabado con la Orquesta Sinfónica de Praga lo cual se convirtió en un concepto, bajo la perspectiva de Vallín, “de música clásica pop, por así decirlo”.

Un rostro dorado

Dos años después de ese lanzamiento en las plataformas digitales, Vallín, de la mano de Gibson y Rey Vinilo decidieron lanzar esta edición de lujo, de solamente 100 copias, que incluye un disco LP vinilo dorado, una copia del álbum en CD, una foto autografiada, tres púas de guitarra exclusivas de Sergio Vallín y Gibson, un parche conmemorativo para coserlo sobre una chamarra o una gorra y un juego de cuerdas Gibson para guitarra eléctrica, además de un código para descargar las partituras del álbum.

El disco de vinilo en dorado se hizo de ese color y diseño en honor a la primera guitarra Gibson signature del guitarrista mexicano. Se trata de la Sergio Vallín 1955 Les Paul Goldtop, del Gibson Custom Shop Murphy Lab, la cual fue meticulosamente diseñada para que los fanáticos y entusiastas de las cuerdas experimenten esta guitarra que viene a ser la extensión de los brazos y manos de Sergio.

Cabe destacar que Vallín es el único músico latino con una guitarra de edición limitada Gibson Les Paul Goldtop nombrada y diseñada en su honor y lo más atractivo es que se creó en tono dorado. “Y qué mejor que ‘Microsifonías’ se encarne en un disco de vinilo dorado”, expresó con orgullo. ¡Y vaya que debe estarlo!

Una de las características de este disco es el diseño artístico en relación al diseño de las fotografías, los créditos y las portadas en las que se incluyen impresiones de pinturas con los rostros de las celebridades involucradas en el aspecto musical. La portada consta de seis caras y un forro adicional con los créditos de cada uno de los 7 temas que componen el acetato, además de los agradecimientos, dedicatorias al equipo de trabajo, a sus invitados y a los 100 afortunados fans que tengan de privilegio de tener en su poder una de las copias de estuche de lujo negro y de pasta dura con letras doradas.

Aunque se trató de un trabajo que como él mismo lo dijo, tomó más tiempo del esperado, el resultado superó sus expectativas. “Más que nada es el resultado del trabajo de un equipo y que Gibson siempre confió en mí y esta guitarra la toco en el tour (“Mexico Lindo y Querido”), por supuesto, y es el resultado del trabajo, del tiempo y de la pasión de una familia que es Gibson, que junto conmigo sacamos esta guitarra”, señaló el guitarrista que aunque se ha inclinado al rock y el pop, desde siempre también ha sido admirador del flamenco y la guitarra clásica del desaparecido Paco de Lucía.

Precisamente y coincidiendo con su amigo Alejandro Sanz, Vallín desearía que ahora que se estará celebrando el 16 de noviembre la ceremonia del Latin Grammy en Sevilla, España, sería una estupenda oportunidad para que la Academia Latina de la Grabación le rindiera un tributo póstumo a uno de los más grandes guitarristas del género flamenco como lo fue Paco de Lucía.

“Para el flamenco, yo creo, que no ha habido alguien más grande que Paco (de Lucía) Entonces, definitivamente, tienen que hacer algo (un homenaje póstumo) con Paco de Lucía (en los Latin Grammy de Sevilla)”.

Precisamente en este encuentro con Vallín en Hollywood, el guitarrista aprovechó para compartir una anécdota que tuvo con Paco de Lucia durante la última vez que el guitarrista visitó la ciudad de Guadalajara, en México.

“Fui a verlo al auditorio Telmex y llevé una guitarra porque quería que me la autografiara en el camerino. La firmó y a los dos meses murió. No nos lo esperábamos y yo creo que mucha gente sentimos, incluyendo a Alejandro Sanz , porque lo hemos platicado, que no se le dió (el reconocimiento que siempre mereció) porque para el flamenco, yo creo, que no ha habido alguien más grande que Paco y El Camarón (de la Isla), pero en la guitarra, no ha habido más grande que él. Entonces, definitivamente, tienen que hacer algo con Paco de Lucía”, expresó el guitarrista.

Mientras llega la fecha de los Latin Grammy, Vallín espera con entusiasmo la llegada del 2024, pues el próximo año cumplirá sus 30 años de perlas como integrante de la banda Maná y eso habrá que celebrarlo.

“Se dicen fácil 30 años, pero es un montón de tiempo y más en el rock & roll”, concluyó con una sonrisa y listo para compartir con su público que llegaba a la sala del Gibson para la posibilidad de ser uno de los 100 afortunados en obtener una copia firmada de sus “Microsinfonías” dorada.
