Very enjoyable, the people on the tour made the experience! Sal was very organized and was able to give additional info when asked! Highly recommend!

Mayan Encounter Tour

Mayan Encounter

I wish I could do it all again for the first time. Simply an amazing trip. Guy is the best tour guide there ever was! This trip was fast-paced. Starting in Antigua - I recommend showing up the day before the starting date of the trip, for example, if your first day is on Sunday get in on Saturday! I felt like I missed out on the city because I showed up at 4 pm the day the tour started. On day 2 you'll have a long travel day to Rio Dulce (It's totally worth it). You must do the extra activity to float down the river and go to the hot springs - this was a highlight of the trip for me. Heading to Flores your in for some cultural treats. Tikal is unexpected, even if you cannot climb to the top of every temple - you must go. We then made our way to Belize where by chance we got to see the Ruta Maya canoe race! What a blast at the party by the river the night before and many laughs watching all the boats try to make it under the bridge the next morning. You can catch your breath (the public bus is easy peasy - don't sweat it) once you get to Caye ('Key') Caulker. The bike ride is leisurely if you're like me and hang out in the back of the group to really take in the town. The extra activity to see the Blue Hole was a wild adventure but I would have much rather spent some time with my new friends exploring the town and visiting the local spots. Once getting to Playa del Carmen - I highly suggest the cenotes extra activity (if you don't mind another few hours on the bus). Most in my group left on the last day, so if you are worried about the trip to the airport... might be a good day to head back home.

Belize Tour: Exciting Adventures in Tropical Paradise Tour

Belize Tour: Exciting Adventures in Tropical Paradise

While my husband and I enjoyed the sights of mainland Belize and Caye Caulker, we would not do another tour through VIBE Adventures based in Mexico. The Belizean tour guide that was hired by VIBE was informative, but often did not check the daily itineraries and made several changes, which bothered others on the tour. He went home every night, but could be contacted on WhatsApp. He charged me USD$50 for a 4 mile drive from the airport to the hotel (and I gave him USD$10 tip), and I was told days later by others on the tour that it cost then USD$30 to take a taxi for the same trip. I forgot my phone at the airport upon arrival, so the guide went back to get it for me, I give him another USD$50 and USD$15 tip for his troubles. AT the end of the trip, he send me a message on WhatsApp about why I didn't give him another tip at the end of the tour! No others in our group received this request and he accommodated them substantially, so very unprofessional of him, and I cannot speak for the other group members why they chose not to tip him. I stayed with him during physical climbs because he could barely climb stairs, etc. On transfer to Caye Caulker, he did not know if someone else was going to meet us there for the tour, this shows poor communication between VIBE, the tour group and our guide. I don't want to focus on the negative aspects, and learning about Mayan culture and all activities were wonderful.

Tour provider : Mayawalk Tours

Why choose this tour? We personally chose this tour because of the raving reviews. And we must Mayawalk Tours lived up to its expectations. Our guide was one of the most passionate and knowledgeable guides we ever had. Also, swimming through a cave and seeing real Mayan artefacts is super cool.

Government officials, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, The British High Commission and US Embassy officials have trusted Mayawalk Tours with their San Ignacio ATM tour – so did we and so can you!

What can you expect from this tour? On the Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave Tour and Picnic , you’ll explore the ATM Cave which is also called the “Cave of the Stone Sepulchre”.

National Geographic voted the ATM Cave the #1 Sacred Cave destination in the world. It is not only beautiful geologically with its crystalline stalactites and stalagmites, but also historically, as is a natural museum of ancient Maya artefacts, as well as a sacred burial place with the remains of 13 sacrificed men, women and children.

Your adventure starts with a 45-minute jungle hike including river crossings.

To access the cave, you have to swim – be prepared to get wet on this tour. Your three hours in the cave start in the lower wet part. Wade through an extensive underground maze of tunnels, passageways and chambers.

Climb to the higher dry part of the cave. Learn about the traditions and rites that took place in the cave system and visit the famous crystallised skeleton of the “Crystal Maiden” as you hike deeper into the cave.

  • 3-hour walking tour of the cave system.
  • Expert, specially licensed guide.
  • Small group ensures personal service.
  • Transportation to and from our office in San Ignacio.
  • All necessary equipment.
  • Lunch with a drink.
Wow! Our Guide, Hugh was amazing! He truly cared about every member of the tour. He is passionate about the ancient people's culture, mythology, archeology, geology and history. He made us feel at ease as we navigated the cave and some of the difficult terrain in and out of the water. We were impressed with his knowledge and skill. Also the driver was very professional and helped set up the food. And the cook who provided the meal at the end was awesome. Her food was so yummy. Very good stewed chicken. Loved the entire experience. This is the most unique cave experience you will ever have.

Tour provide r: Belize Caving Expeditions

Why choose this tour? Cave tubing is a lot of fun and Belize Caving Expeditions makes it truly special.

What can you expect from this tour? San Ignacio: Cave Tubing with Lunch & Optional Zipline starts with a jungle hike. You can choose to tube through 1 or 2 caves, depending on how far you want to walk (30 or 45 minutes).

In your first optional cave, float down the river and relax while your guide tells you about Mayan culture.

In the second cave, light rapids will add some excitement and speed to your tubing experience.

You can also add an optional zipline ride.

Finish the tour by cooling off in the water of a picturesque natural pool.

  • Expert tour guide.
  • Transportation.
  • Zipline (if option chosen).
  • Entrance fees.
An unbelievable experience with an amazing guide! With this tour, not only did we tube an extra cave, but our guide was so very flexible, knowledgable, AND we were able to explore/climb parts of the cave that other tours were just passing by! Doing so, we were able to spot Mayan pottery and really explore the space. Plus, lunch and rum punch was delicious!

Picture of Taking a canoe into a cave

⭐ Rating : 5.0 / 5 (10 reviews)

Tour provider : Belize Caving Expeditions

Why choose this tour? If you’re a cave lover like us but cannot be bothered to swim, tube, or walk 😉

What can you expect from this tour? On the Half-Day Cave Canoeing Adventure , you’ll paddle on a canoe through an underground cave system. Float along the ancient Maya waterway inside the mountain while your local guide teaches you about the different rituals and ceremonies that were conducted inside the cave as well as the geology.

  • Tour guide.
  • Equipment rental: Canoe, paddles, helmets, headlight, spotlight.
  • Snacks: Chips and salsa, watermelon.
This is a very underrated tour option…. While other caves are more popular, in our opinion this far exceeds expectations. The canoeing in the cave was a really accessible way to see spectacular caves and artifacts. Marlon was an informative and resourceful guide.

Picture of Stalactites and stalagmites in a cave

⭐ Rating : 5.0 / 5 (3 reviews)

Why choose this tour? Kill two birds with one stone (yep, that’s the worst geology-related pun I could come up with) on this geology double feature tour: The tourist highlight St Herman's Blue Hole and the off-the-beaten-path Crystal Cave.

What can you expect from this tour? Like most caving tours, the Crystal Cave & Blue Hole National Park tour starts with a jungle hike.

Your tour through the Crystal Cave system will last 3-5 hours – my heart beats with excitement even thinking about it.

On your spelunking expedition, you’ll wander through a series of limestone caverns that the Mayans treated as a natural pantheon. You’ll see Mayan artefacts and the evidence of ritual ceremonies that took place thousands of years ago.

Step into Wonderland, an aptly-named chamber deep in the earth with walls covered in shimmering crystals. Admire beautiful stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones, rock columns, and crystalline formations.

The cherry on top: You can have your lunch and a cheeky little rum punch IN the cave!

Finish your day with a refreshing dip in the Blue Hole pool, one of Belize's most stunning natural wonders.

  • Hotel pickup and drop off within San Ignacio.
  • Entrance fee.
  • Guided tour.
Selwyn was the best tour guide we could’ve asked for. He was informative, patient and made for a very safe friendly and fun atmosphere whilst exploring the cave. Crystal Cave was astonishing and would recommend this to anyone who is up for a bit more of a challenge than the ATM tours. We were also the only people in the cave which was an added bonus and the lunch and dip in the blue hole afterwards was a great end to the day.

– GetYourGuide traveller (see more reviews )

Why choose this tour? This excursion is ideal for adrenaline and nature lovers!

What can you expect from this tour? The Adrenaline Pumping Black Hole Drop: Rappelling at Ian Anderson's Caves Branch Tour begins with a 60-90 minute jungle hike to the Natural Sink Hole of Actun Loch Tunich.

Your team of expert guides will gear you up for the 300 ft (91-meter) descent into the sinkhole before you can enjoy the adrenaline rush of rappelling.

At the bottom of the sinkhole, you will enjoy a tasty picnic-style lunch.

The final part of your adventure is hiking out of the cave and back to base camp.

  • Safety Repeling Gear.
  • Small group.
  • GST (Goods and Services Tax).

Important information:

  • Dress code: Lightweight long pants (not jeans), t-shirts or long-sleeved shirts, and well-threaded tennis or hiking boots.
Worth every penny! Our excursion with Caves Branch was even better than we expected. Everyone was very helpful for our first repelling experience. The beautiful and very sweaty hike up to the black hole drop took about an hour and was not an easy. Our guide, Hector really made this an incredible experience. We stopped to learn a bit about the local plant & animal life and had plenty of time to take photos. The view from repelling was stunning. We’d love to come back and bring our kids when they’re a bit older. The team at Caves Branch will give you everything you need for the day (small backpack with water, helmet & repelling equipment, as well as a fresh lunch) Tips: Wear comfortable, sturdy hiking shoes, clothes to sweat in, bring gratuity for your guide and mosquito spray.

Maya Ruins Tours San Ignacio Belize

Picture of Caracol Maya Ruins

⭐ Rating : 5.0 / 5 (103 reviews)

Why choose this tour? Caracol is the largest Mayan ruin in Belize. It is a major site in Mayan history, rivalling the neighbouring metropolis of Tikal in size, power and riches.

What can you expect from this tour? The Caracol Maya Ruins Tour Including Rio On Pools, Rio Frio Cave starts with a drive through the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve on which you have the chance to spot some wildlife.

Break the journey up by visiting Rio Frio Cave. It is a must-see because it has the largest cave entrance in Belize and was once a sacred burial site for the ancient Maya. We personally loved it for its sandy beach within the cave.

Caracol will be the highlight of the day. Follow your guide through the vast archaeological site and follow the history in the glyphs, stelae, and carvings. Climb up the pyramid of the Sky Temple – with nearly 135 ft (41 m) the highest man-made building in Belize to this day – and admire the panoramic views of Belize and neighbouring Guatemala.

On your way back, take a break at the Rio On Pools, a series of natural swimming holes, to cool down and relax in the clear water. There are some natural waterslides which are a lot of fun.

  • Round-trip transportation.
  • Picnic lunch with a drink.
  • National Park fees.
  • All taxes, fees and handling charges.
Great experience. Caracol was my favourite even after visiting Tikal and yaxha in Guatemala. Guide and driver were lovely and all stops were lovely

Badge of Excellence

Why choose this tour? Visit two Mayan ruins on one tour!

What can you expect from this tour? On the Xunantunich and Cahal Pech Tour :

  • Enjoy Cahal Pech for 1-2 hours almost to yourself. Cahal Pech gives you a perfect first glimpse into Maya history before heading to the bigger site Xunantunich.
  • Explore the majestic Xunantunich Maya site. Enjoy amazing views of the countryside from El Castillo, Belize’s second-highest man-made structure.
  • Enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant.
  • Professional local guide.
  • Transport by private vehicle.
  • Hotel pickup and drop-off (select hotels only).
  • Lunch at a local restaurant.
  • Bottled water.
A great day trip with a very knowledgeable guide! Our guide showed us around Cahal Pech before it got too crowded and then over to Xunatunich to climb the ancient structures. Delicious lunch spots, as well.

Picture of Typical Belizean food

⭐ Rating : 5.0 / 5 (2 reviews)

Why choose this tour? We believe that you only get to know a culture if you sample its food. The Xunantunich & Food Tour with local chocolate experience is the only food tour we could find in San Ignacio. The Xunantunich Mayan ruins are a bonus.

What can you expect from this tour?

  • Start early to grab some breakfast downtown – how about some fresh fruits or even some fast food?
  • Visit some hidden places at Xunantunich and climb El Castillo to enjoy the beautiful landscape.
  • Stop for lunch and taste some delicious food at a local restaurant called Benny's Kitchen. Sample several Belizean dishes, including salbutes, pibil (we love pibil), and more.
  • Learn to make chocolate the Mayan way.
  • Depending on the day, you may enjoy some tasty fresh fruits or watch some delicious hot fast food being prepared for you at San Ignacio Market.
  • Guided tour of Xunantunich.
  • Transportation to any hotel in San Ignacio Town.
Our guide, Jorge, was great! Very knowledgeable, informative and friendly. Would definitely recommend him and the tour to everyone. The chocolate tour was fun also.

Picture of San Ignacio to Tikal

⭐ Rating : 5.0 / 5 (162 reviews)

Why choose this tour? If you don’t plan to head to Guatemala for longer, Tikal tours from San Ignacio are the easiest option to visit in one day. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is a must-see.

What can you expect from this tour? The Tikal Day Trip with Local Lunch from San Ignacio is super convenient. You will be picked up at your hotel in San Ignacio. Your professional guide will take you across the border to Guatemala and into Tikal National Park.

Enjoy a fascinating tour of the archaeological complex.

  • Local guide.
  • Hotel pickup and drop-off within San Ignacio town limits.
We had an amazing day at Tikal. We were picked up at our hotel at the time we were tole to be ready. We were driven to the Guatemala border and turned over to our guide for the day. The transfer was so incredibly easy. We the met Willie who was an awesome guide. We made a couple of stops on our way. Tikal was amazing. So much more than I expected. We were glad we had bug spray and sun screen as it was very hot. My wife and I went with her parents and they did great as well. So very glad we climbed to the top of Temple 4. Saw monkeys and other wildlife. I am so glad my wife and I got to visit this amazing historical place. Our lunch was great as well. My wife has a gluten allergy and they handled it great. U-Go Tours is who we met in Guatemala. If you are any place close, you have to make this a destination.

Nature Tours San Ignacio Belize

Picture of Belize waterfall

⭐ Rating : 5.0 / 5 (114 reviews)

Why choose this tour? Choose the Jungle Pontoon Waterfall Adventure Tour if you want to feel like a jungle explorer cruising through the wild forests of Belize on a pontoon boat. And of course, if you love waterfalls.

What can you expect from this tour? Float down a river that winds through the mystical Maya Mountains, stopping to swim and cliff jump at three waterfalls buried deep in the rainforest.

  • The Un-Named waterfall: Numerous pools of crystal-clear water cascading upon each other create an ever-shifting spectacle. The high calcium content in the water transforms fallen leaves, twigs, and ferns into calcified artefacts.
  • The Twin Falls: While the Twin Falls both cut their course through the same granite barrier, they vary in both size and features.
  • Rio-Frio Waterfall: The Rio Frio Waterfall presents an idyllic opportunity for bathing beneath its cascade. Its waters gracefully plummet from a height of roughly 75 ft (23 m), into an inviting pool that is perfect for leisurely bathing.

A fresh Belizean lunch cooked right on board the pontoon completes this fantastic full-day adventure.

  • Professional guide.
  • Transport in an air-conditioned vehicle.
The tour itself is very cool but the guides are what make the tour exceptional. Nadir and Javonni were amazing hosts. They kept us entertained the whole ride, assisted with anything we needed, made us a delicious meal, helped us create the most memorable experiences (going behind a waterfall, cliff diving, rope swinging) and are all around good people. My family of 4 (2 adults, 2 children -8 years and 11 years) had a blast and would highly recommend this adventure!

Picture of Birdwatching Belize

⭐ Rating : 5.0 / 5 (1 review)

Why choose this tour? The Rio Maya Bird Sanctuary and Spanish Lookout All Inclusive Birdwatching Tour is for you if you love birding.

What can you expect from this tour? Start your day at Rio Maya Bird Sanctuary. Enjoy the sunrise surrounded by tropical fruit trees and songbirds. Grab your binoculars and commence a slow-paced hike through the nature trails. Expect hummingbirds, warblers, and the endemic Rufous Breasted Spinetail.

Make your way to the industrial Mennonite farmlands of Spanish Lookout. The agricultural lands, open fields, and patches of forest create a diverse mix of birds.

Look for the following birds in the broadleaf forest of Aguacate: Slaty-tailed Trogon, Rufous-tailed Jacamar, and Ruddy Woodcreeper.

Where the forest merges into a small lake, look for Blue-winged Teals, Wood Storks, Least Grebes, and Yellow-crowned Night Herons.

Have a delicious picnic lunch while enjoying the breathtaking view of the lagoon.

  • Alcoholic beverages.
  • Air-conditioned vehicle.
  • All fees and taxes.
Julio have the best birding tour I have ever been on and Connie was extremely helpful in booking. I cannot say better things and still need to share my ebird with them!

Picture of Off-roading Belize

⭐ Rating : 5.0 / 5 (13 reviews)

Why choose this tour? Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned ATV veteran, ATV Excursions in Cayo with Waterfalls Experience are for adventure seekers.

What can you expect from this tour? Enjoy riding through the rainforest and mountains of Cayo and see a waterfall only accessible by 4WD.

Start your day with a short safety instruction.

Enjoy an ATV ride through the villages of Cristo Rey and San Antonio in Elijio Panti National. Drive amongst towering trees, mud puddles, hills, and rugged rainforest terrain to the waterfall.

Swim and jump off the rocks in the waterfall to cool off after your ATV adventure.

My wife said that this is the best birthday ever, she loved every bit of it! I would definitely recommend, and would also do again. Our guide was very understanding and informative.

Culture Tours San Ignacio Belize

Picture of Mayan houses

Why choose this tour? The Maya Village and Mennonites of Barton Creek Cultural Tour is perfect for culture lovers as you’ll learn about two different Belizean cultures: The Mayans and the Mennonites.

What can you expect from this tour? Get off the beaten track in a 4x4 car:

First, visit the Maya village of San Antonio or as known in the local Yucatec Maya dialect “Osh Multun Kakab” which translates to “Three Mound Virgin Forest”. It’s mainly an agricultural community.

There are three women’s collectives in San Antonio. One group operates the community bakery, the other specialises in pottery, jewellery and embroidery, and the third makes hammocks and clothing – perfect if you want to do some shopping.

Continue to Barton Creek, where the Mennonites maintain a simple way of life until this day, relying on their knowledge to survive in the jungle with few modern amenities. They use horse-drawn buggies and wear conservative clothing – the women wear bonnets and long dresses while the men wear denim overalls and hats. This German-speaking community of European descent and heritage is a unique blend of cultures.

  • Transport by private vehicle from San Ignacio and back.
  • Local Maya lunch with a drink.
We had a fantastic excursion learning about the Mayan culture today. Such wonderful people and delicious food. We will do this tour again for sure.

Active Tours San Ignacio Belize

Picture of Kayaking

Why choose this tour? Choose the Canyoning and Lake Kayaking Combo if you want to find a hidden piece of paradise.

What can you expect from this tour? Start with spectacular towering canyons covered with air plants and penetrated by rays of sun.

End with a refreshing swim and kayaking in the beautiful Five Blues Lake, named after the five different shades of blue that make up the lake.

  • Latest kayaking & outdoor equipment!
  • Lunch (consists of a Cave Burrito with fresh four tortillas, veggies & meat).
Let me start by saying that we were hesitant to book this tour at first since we didn't see it anywhere else, but we would have regretted it. Five Blues is a piece of paradise hidden in the jungle and yet only minutes away from the main highway. It was one of the most beautiful tours we did involving cave exploration, nature hike, climbing and sliding huge rocks and kayaking the gorgeous lake. Elvis and Jayson were our guides and we absolutely felt safe each step of the way while enjoying the tour. One of the things that stayed with me was their genuine conservation efforts and work to unbuild the community. If you wanna do something truly unique and adventurous away from crowds and support conservation, Going Coastal is your option. We will be back when the via ferrata is open Elvis!

Picture of Horseback Riding Belize

⭐ Rating : 5.0 / 5 (12 reviews)

Why choose this tour? The Horseback Ride to the Forgotten Jungle City is not just for horse girls but also for people who want to venture away from modern civilisation and deep into the Belizean jungle.

What can you expect from this tour? Ride deep into Belize’s rain forest to the “Forgotten Jungle City” of Minanha.

First, head to the local stables to meet your horse and saddle up. Keep an eye out for native wildlife as you explore.

Follow in the footsteps of explorers to Minanha, a once-mighty Mayan city. Climb among the 38 partially uncovered structures of this lost city.

After lunch, venture into the ancient Mayan underworld aka Isabella Cave. Grab a headlamp and explore the system of chambers glimmering with naturally formed crystalline structures. Witness the echoes of burial artefacts abandoned over a millennium ago.

After returning to the surface, climb back on your horse for the return journey to San Ignacio.

  • Typical Belizean lunch.
This was one of the absolute most incredible adventures I’ve ever been on. We weren’t sure what to expect from this trip but it was exceptional. First let me say that if you are not experienced on a horse, go for a shorter ride. This was very challenging at times both in terrain and the amount of time you are in the saddle. Robert, the owner of both the horses and the land is an excellent guide. He is knowledgeable and intelligent. He has a great sense of humor and perspective. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with him. He is a passionate educator and really has a vast knowledge of the land he lives on. The trip was enhanced by his lovely assistant Rachel and his hysterical dogs. They provided a passion for the land (Rachael) and immense comic relief (Red and Blue)This really was an adventure of a lifetime

Picture of Mountainbiking Belize

Why choose this tour? Choose the Mountain Bike Adventure to Xunantunich Maya Site for an adrenaline-filled adventure on a mountain bike!

What can you expect from this tour? Embark on your adventure on the outskirts of San Jose Succotz. Your experienced guide will equip you with a bike and helmet and provide an orientation and a safety briefing.

Follow your guide's lead as you pedal uphill along a single track, skillfully manoeuvring past tree branches and navigating tree roots that dot the path.

As the journey progresses, the terrain transforms into a more leisurely double track, leading you through an open expanse that unveils breathtaking panoramic views of the encompassing mountains.

In Succotz, board the 19th-century hand-cranked ferry crossing the Mopan River.

Embark on a 1-mile (1.6 km) uphill ride on a paved road, leading you to the remarkable Mayan city of Xunantunich.

Explore the archaeological wonders in the company of your guide. Ascend to the pyramid of El Castillo, the second tallest Mayan structure in Belize, where panoramic vistas of the Cayo District unfold before you.

End your journey with a speedy ride downhill.

  • Use of necessary equipment.
  • Hotel pickup and drop-off within San Ignacio Town limits.
This ride was really fun and not very technical mostly dirt road, but some potholes and roots to make it interesting. A long slow climb, then downhill into farmland next to the river. We rode across a river on a hand cranked car ferry and climbed the paved hill up to Xunantuich Ruins. What made the ride and ruins tour so spectacular, is that our guide, Selwyn Bol is a naturalist with a degree from Belize University. He had a keen eye for birds, their sounds, and where to see them. He also had extensive knowledge of the local flora there. He explained so much about the Mayan Culture and Xunantunich, that it informed our later tours of Caracol, and Cahal Pech. This was money well spent and we rode our bikes through the jungle!

Excellent tour transportation and company. Carla and Elio have been so easy to work with and the tours have been very fun and informative. Carla made scheduling our transportation from the international airport to San Ignacio, two tours and transportation from San Ignacio to Dangriga very easy. She worked with me to get the schedule and tours just right. She was great communicating changes and options (due to weather conditions) in a timely manner! Elio, our tour guide and driver, was excellent as well. He was always on time, had great information and was very considerate. He took the time to show us the places in town, gave us great restaurant recommendations and added stops to the pharmacy and supermarket when we needed a few items. We really enjoyed having him guide us through the caves and ruins. Without him, we would not have seen or learned so much!

Caracol (Snail)

Caracol is the largest Maya archaeological site in Belize, Central America. In AD 650, the urban area of Caracol had a radius of approximately 10 kilometers around the site's epicenter. Xunantunich (Maiden of the Rock)

The name Xunantunich or zshoo-NAN-too-NEECH may prove to be a little challenging to some to pronounce. Our guides often tease that our visitors should just call it Tuna sandwich. Belize Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave Tour

Atm cave tour.

Taking a journey into the Mayan underworld at Actun Tunichil Muknal, or the “Cave of the Stone Sepulchre”, will be one of the most enlightening, epic, and unique experiences of your life. Leave the world of the living behind as you venture into the heart of the ATM Cave with your licensed guide. Recently deemed as the #1 Sacred Cave destination in the world by  National Geographic , the ATM cave is not only geologically beautiful with its crystalline stalactites and stalagmites, but also historically as it is a natural museum of ancient Mayan artifacts and a sacred burial place. This is known as the final resting place of the “Crystal Maiden”, who is believed to be an ancient Mayan Ceremonial victim along with 13 other skeletal remains which includes men, women and children. MayaWalk guides have led government officials, National Geographic teams, the Discovery Channel, The British High Commission, and US Embassy officials into the ATM Cave.

We depart from our office after a short orientation usually at 8:00 am. This famous archeological site is located approximately an hour and a half drive from our office in San Ignacio. We make a short stop at a store for quick shopping and/or pick up guests. Upon arrival at the beautiful Tapir Mountain Reserve, we strap on our helmets and embark on your flat jungle hike to the cave entrance which is approximately forty-five minutes. The hike includes three stream crossings of knee to waist high with the help of a rope for the first crossing.

At the mouth of the cave, we swim across a small spring-fed pool for 10-15 seconds into the dark underworld of the cave that allows us access to the extensive underground maze of tunnels, passageways and chambers, climaxing in the ceremonial chamber housing stoneware, ceramics and the famed crystallized skeleton of the “Crystal Maiden.” As you explore the cave, you will use your four points of contacts; your arms and feet to manage your way through small areas while climbing and scrambling over rocks as well as a 12 feet ladder to access ‘The Cathedral.’ There are a couple sections in the cave whereby the ceiling narrows down, but you will go through it very quickly. At no point is traditional rock climbing or crawling involved. You will just bend for a couple of seconds to get through the small passageways.

At the dry chamber of the cave, “The Cathedral”, you will be asked to remove your footwear and explore only in wet socks. This is for preservation reasons to protect the sensitive limestone floor as our bodies secrete oil and bacteria. Here you will witness Mayan artifacts, potteries and close to 13 skeletal remains. Approximately 3 hours is spent inside the cave under the instruction of our licensed and experienced guide before heading back to the parking lot for a scrumptious Belizean lunch of rice and beans with chicken, plantain, salad, dessert and a refreshing cup of rum punch! After lunch, we make our way back to San Ignacio at approximately 3:30 pm.

Leave your cameras behind and experience the power of ancient spirits with your mind, body, and soul. This is not only a physical adventure, but a journey into the spiritual realm.

Over the years, we have successfully taken claustrophobics into the cave. Reach out to our office so our team of professionals can answer your questions. Any phobias (fear of water, darkness, non-swimmers), medical conditions or concerns please let us know at the time of booking. Life vests are provided.

San Ignacio Travel Guide

ruins in San Ignacio, Belize

San Ignacio, otherwise known as “Cayo,” is a lively backpacker hub on the Macal River in Belize . Most travelers stop here as they pass to and from Guatemala .

San Ignacio is the perfect base for exploring several nearby Mayan ruins, including Caracol and Xunantunich. Since the town is so close to the border with Guatemala, a visit to the impressive Tikal archaeological site is also easily doable. If you’re lucky enough to be in town on a Saturday, the San Ignacio Market draws farmers and vendors from all over to sell local fruits and veggies, crafts, clothing, and even medicinal herbs.

Much of San Ignacio’s activity focuses on Burns Avenue (otherwise known as “the strip”) — the main street cutting through town, lined with candy-colored shops, restaurants, and bars. Grab a sidewalk table and a drink, enjoy the sun, and take in the parade of fellow backpackers and locals passing by. It’s one of the greatest pleasures you’ll have while backpacking in San Ignacio.

This San Ignacio travel guide will help you plan your trip, stay safe, and have fun in this popular backpacker hub!

Top 5 Things to See and Do in San Ignacio

People walking up steep stairs heading up to Xunantunich, Mayan ruins in San Ignacio, Belize

1. Visit Xunantunich

Otherwise known as the “the Maiden of the Rock,” Xunantunich is a ruined Mayan city in the middle of the jungle possibly dating back to before 600 BCE (the exact date is unknown). Legend has it that a dark, ghostly Mayan woman was sighted during different time periods climbing up and down the pyramid and then disappearing. Regardless of whether you’re into folklore, this gorgeous, architecturally rich site is where you can climb the El Castillo pyramid for a sweeping view of the entire site and the Mopan and Macal rivers. The pyramid itself has ancient carvings of astronomical symbols on both the eastern and western sides. At the visitor center, you learn more about the site and also check out some of the unearthed artifacts. Make sure to bring lots of water, sunscreen, bug spray, and good walking shoes.

2. Float into the Barton Creek Cave

One of the most popular day trips from San Ignacio is to the ancient Barton Creek Cave in the Cayo District. Once an ancient Mayan ceremonial ground, this cave is nestled in the jungle and famous for its unique rock formations. Here you can either explore in a canoe, inner tube, or swim through the waters in the cathedral-like chambers. Barton Creek Cave is the longest subterranean river cave in Belize (it’s roughly 4.5 miles/7 kilometers), allowing you to float around while taking in the pottery, skulls, and rock formations dating back to when it was a Mayan sacrificial site. A two-hour tour starts at 50 BZD and a four-hour tour starts at 150-200 BZD.

3. Explore Cahal Pech

Cahal Pech is the oldest known Mayan site in the area, located right outside San Ignacio on the banks of the Macal River. The ruins are located on top of a hill, so you’ll have a bit of a climb to get there, but you’ll be treated to incredible panoramic views of the ruins and the jungle along the way. Today, there are remnants of 36 structures including temple pyramids, palaces, and ancient ball courts. It’s a smaller site in comparison to some of the other ancient ruins but the buildings, tunnels, and passageways all weave together like a maze. It’s much less crowded than other sites and very close to town too. Admission is 10 BZD.

4. Canoe the Macal River

For a relaxing day with incredible scenery, rent a canoe and glide along the crystal clear Macal River, paddling through lush green canopied jungle while keeping an eye out for exotic birds like orange-breasted falcons as well as exotic butterflies and iguanas. The river flows slowly so it’s beginner-friendly and also safe to hop out and cool off in the water. Some tours include a stop at the Belize Botanical Gardens where you can enjoy all kinds of beautiful plants, or a stop at Chaa Creek resort to see Blue Morpho Butterfly Farm. This activity is best enjoyed during the dry season mid-November to mid-April. Make sure to bring water shoes! Self-guided half-day tours start at 70- 100 BZD and a full-day guided canoe trip is about 150 BZD.

5. Visit Actun Tunichil Muknal

Located in the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve, the Actun Tunichil Muknal cave, which means “Cave of the Crystal Sepulchre,” is an ancient Mayan ceremonial ground. This place is perfect for those who are up for adventure as you can swim into the cave and come face to face with the remains of those who were sacrificed to the Mayan Gods, including the skeletons of Mayan children who died here over a century ago. For this activity you’re required to go with a guide who takes you through the jungle to the cave, where you can wade around, climb and crawl around the narrow passageways and enjoy the enchanting colors of the water. Make sure and bring a dry change of clothes. Tours include safety gear and lunch. Prices for full-day tours start around 225-250 BZD.

Other Things to See and Do in San Ignacio

1. visit the market.

If you’re in town on a Saturday or Tuesday morning, head to the town’s busy market on the banks of the river. The market is open every day, but these days are the busiest. Farmers from all over the district come here to sell fresh fruit, vegetables, and dairy products. Other vendors sell crafts, artwork, and even medicinal herbs. The Cayo District is made up of many different groups of people, including the Maya and Creole, so the market turns into a whirlwind of activity as the locals come together to share gossip and news.

2. Spot wildlife at the Green Iguana Exhibit

The San Ignacio Resort Hotel runs a conservation program for the Green Iguana to create awareness and educate visitors and locals about these endangered creatures. You’ll get some hands-on interaction with the iguanas while learning about their entire life cycle, from egg to rearing. The resort itself sits at the top of a hill amongst 14 acres of rainforest home to 150 species of birds, various wildlife, and 70 species of trees and plant life. Admission is 23 BZD, and tours are offered daily.

3. Walk the Medicinal Jungle Trail

Directly facing the Green Iguana Exhibit is the entrance to the Medicinal Jungle Trail. The trail isn’t tough, and it only takes about 45 minutes to walk it, but along the way, you’re likely to encounter iguanas, anteaters, and a huge variety of birds. If you’re with a tour guide from the Green Iguana Exhibit, they can explain all the surprising medicinal uses of the plants along the trail. It’s incredibly informative!

4. Visit the Green Hills Butterfly Ranch

Green Hills is the largest butterfly display in Belize. It’s home to about 30 species native to Belize, as well as a collection of passion flowers, heliconias, and orchids. Jan and Tineke are the friendly Dutch couple who operate the place, and they’ll tell you anything you want to know about the butterflies. Admission is 40 BZD. Private tours last 1.5 hours and cost 30 BZD.

5. Explore the Belize Botanic Gardens

The Belize Botanic Gardens sprawl across a full 45-acre area, with about 1,000 different plant species native to Belize. Take your time to wander the 2-mile (3-kilometer) trail amongst the fruit trees and Maya medicinal plants, and enjoy the solitude by the two ponds. Admission is 15 BZD, and guided tours last 1.5 hours and cost 30 BZD (including admission).

San Ignacio Travel Costs

Turquoise shop with red doors in San Ignacio, Belize

Hostel prices – There are only a handful of hostels in San Ignacio, and prices start at about 25 BZD for a bed in a dorm with 8-12 beds. Free Wi-Fi is standard, but breakfast is not. However, nearly every hostel has excellent kitchen facilities or a BBQ area for cooking your meals. Private hostel rooms average 70 BZD per night, but not all have ensuite bathrooms.

Budget hotel prices – Rooms at three-star hotels (including resorts) with free Wi-Fi, swimming pools, air conditioning, and free breakfast start at around 70 BZD per night. That’s as budget-friendly as it gets for a hotel here.

However, you have lots of Airbnb options in San Ignacio to choose from. Private rooms start from around 70 BZD but most average closer to 100-120 BZD. You can find full apartments or homes for 100-250 BZD per night.

Food – Belizean cuisine leans heavily on beans, rice, cheese, and tortillas. Rice and beans is a common lunch choice, and you can always find tamales, panades (fried meat pies), (onion soup), chicken stew, and garnaches (beans, cheese, and onion in a fried tortilla) pretty much everywhere you go.

Street food like pupusas (flatbread) and tacos are less than 2 BZD each, and you’ll find lots of options at the San Ignacio Market.

Meals at Belizean restaurants will cost around 10 BZD for dishes like rice and beans, or ceviche. I recommend eating at Cenaida’s or Pop’s, but there are also tons of places to eat on Burns Avenue. A beer to go with your meal shouldn’t cost more than 4 BZD.

If you want western food like pasta and burgers, expect to pay between 20-30 BZD per dish. The Guava Limb Cafe is a good option for western food, as is Erva’s Restaurant.

If you plan to do some cooking, you’ll find the best prices in the market. A week’s worth of groceries costs about 75-95 BZD for items like veggies, chicken, rice, beans, and eggs.

Backpacking San Ignacio Suggested Budgets

If you’re backpacking San Ignacio, I’d budget about 75 BZD per day. That covers staying in a hostel dorm, eating street food, cooking most meals, the occasional beer, using public transportation, and doing a few paid activities like visiting the ruins.

On a mid-range budget of about 180 BZD per day, you can stay in a private room in a hostel or Airbnb, eat out more, take a few taxis, enjoy a few more drinks, and do more paid activities such as canoe or kayak tours.

On a “luxury” budget of 290 BZD per day, you can stay in a hotel, eat out for all your meals, drink whatever you want, do whatever tours you want, and take more taxis or rent a car. This is just the ground floor for luxury though — the sky is the limit!

Use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages – some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might pay less every day). We want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in BZD.

San Ignacio Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

There aren’t many ways to save money in San Ignacio as it’s a very small town with limited accommodation and dining options. It’s super affordable as it is. Nevertheless, here are some ways to save when you visit:

  • Shop around – There are many activity and tour providers in town, so be sure to shop around to find the best deal.
  • Hitchhike – It’s a common custom among the locals to simply hitchhike everywhere they need to go. You see old ladies, children, and families on the side of the road looking for a ride. It’s just what they do. My friends and I met great people thumbing it across the country without spending any money at all.
  • Happy hour – Most bars have a happy hour in the late afternoon that offers cheap drinks. Ask your hotel/hostel staff for suggestions on where you can drink cheaply.
  • Stay with a local – If you plan ahead, you might be able to find a nice Couchsurfing host. This way, you not only get a free place to stay, but you’ll have a local host that can share their insider tips and advice.
  • Pack a water bottle – A water bottle with a purifier will come particularly in handy here as the tap water in Belize isn’t always safe. Save money and thousands of plastic bottles and get a bottle that can purify the tap water for you. My preferred bottle is LifeStraw as it has a built-in filter to ensure your water is always clean and safe.

Where to Stay in San Ignacio

There are only a few hostels in San Ignacio, but they are social and affordable. My suggested places to stay are:

  • Bella’s Backpackers
  • The Old House Hostel
  • D’s Hostel

How to Get Around San Ignacio

Metal bridge with bright blue walls and a car driving over it in San Ignacio, Belize

Bus – The town is small and easily walkable, but to explore more of the Cayo District you can also take shuttle buses. Just show up at the lot on Savannah Street and find a bus headed your way. You’ll pay less than 5 BZD for most trips.

Taxis – Trips start at 5 BZD and go up around 9 BZD per mile. While affordable, they add up fast so skip them if you can.

Car rental – As the area is so small here, a car rental really isn’t necessary. If you do want a car, rentals start at around 70 BZD per day for a multi-day rental. Drivers usually need to be at least 25 and have an IDP (International Driving Permit), though drivers 21 and up might be able to rent a car for an extra fee. I’d just skip to the bus, however, as it’s easier and super affordable.

For the best car rental prices, use Discover Cars .

When to Go to San Ignacio

San Ignacio is hot and humid year-round. The hottest months are from April to June, with temperatures usually around 93°F (34°C) each day, with warm nights rarely dripping below 66°F (19°C).

If your primary reason to visit San Ignacio is to see the Maya ruins, the cool season is the best time to visit. This is from November to February, when daily temperatures hover around 85°F (30°C) or less. It’s still hot, but it’s less humid, and you’ll find it much more comfortable to walk around and explore the sites. The ruins (and the town) are more crowded during this time, but it’s not unbearable. Prices are slightly inflated, but overall, it’s still cheap to visit.

How to Stay Safe in San Ignacio

San Ignacio is a safe place to visit. Violent crime is very rare here. Petty theft can occur so keep your valuables secure and out of reach when out and about but, beyond that, it’s a small town and nothing bad really happens.

Solo female travelers should generally feel safe here, however, the standard precautions apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone intoxicated, etc.).

Scams here are rare but you can read about common travel scams to avoid here .

If you experience an emergency, dial 911 for assistance.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past.

San Ignacio Travel Guide: The Best Booking Resources

These are my favorite companies to use when I travel. They consistently have the best deals, offer world-class customer service and great value, and overall, are better than their competitors. They are the companies I use the most and are always the starting point in my search for travel deals.

  • Skyscanner – Skyscanner is my favorite flight search engine. They search small websites and budget airlines that larger search sites tend to miss. They are hands down the number one place to start.
  • Hostelworld – This is the best hostel accommodation site out there with the largest inventory, best search interface, and widest availability.
  • Booking.com – The best all around booking site that constantly provides the cheapest and lowest rates. They have the widest selection of budget accommodation. In all my tests, they’ve always had the cheapest rates out of all the booking websites.
  • Get Your Guide – Get Your Guide is a huge online marketplace for tours and excursions. They have tons of tour options available in cities all around the world, including everything from cooking classes, walking tours, street art lessons, and more!
  • SafetyWing – Safety Wing offers convenient and affordable plans tailored to digital nomads and long-term travelers. They have cheap monthly plans, great customer service, and an easy-to-use claims process that makes it perfect for those on the road.
  • LifeStraw – My go-to company for reusable water bottles with built-in filters so you can ensure your drinking water is always clean and safe.
  • Unbound Merino – They make lightweight, durable, easy-to-clean travel clothing.
  • Top Travel Credit Cards – Points are the best way to cut down travel expenses. Here’s my favorite point earning credit cards so you can get free travel!

For many mainland activities, it’s a good idea to stay in the town of San Ignacio or in one of the nearby lodges in the rain-forest. Whichever you choose, there are a LOT of accommodation options for any budget. In town, you have restaurants, ATMs, grocery stores, tour companies, bars, etc., and I've always found San Ignacio to be friendly and safe. Jungle lodges have easy access to the rain-forest for hiking.

You can get there by bus from Belize City, or by transfer service, but a rental car is a good idea because the attractions are spread out. And you'll need the car only for the mainland part of the trip. If you need transportation on a caye, you can rent a golf cart or bicycles.

The activities I'd put at the top of the list: Xunantunich , ATM (or other) cave, then you can choose from Cahal Pech, cave-tubing, hiking, waterfalls, Caracol, zip-lining, horse riding, chocolate tours, iguana project. If you like zoos, visit the Belize Zoo on the way to or from San Ignacio. San Ignacio is also a good base for a day or overnight trip to Tikal .

For the beach part, the main locations are Ambergris Caye (AC), Caye Caulker (CC), Placencia and Hopkins .

The two cayes are quite different. AC is more developed and gets more tourists & retirees (the town of San Pedro has lots of shops, restaurants, bars, nightlife, etc.), while CC is smaller, quieter and more laid-back. Both have good access to the barrier reef for diving & snorkelling. Other activities are kayaking, sailboarding, fishing. AC has nicer beaches and more food options. CC is a bit cheaper and is more popular with backpackers. I like both places for different reasons.

If you are considering heading south, Placencia has one of the biggest beaches in Belize. Hopkins is a small, quiet village with a good beach. The reef is farther from these two locations than from the cayes, so if you go snorkelling, it means longer boat trips . There are some good activities down south: Cockscomb Wildlife Sanctuary, Bocawina, zip-lines, drumming centres, Garifuna Museum, Maya sites.

I'd spend a minimum of 3 days in the Cayo region and a minimum of 3 days on a caye. You can add the extra days to one or both those areas as you please (add more days to Cayo if you decide to go to Tikal or to Placencia).

For transportation information, here's the link to a website with more details...

https://belizebus.wordpress.com/

For accommodation, the BTB website has an accommodation listing (and much more info)...

https://www.travelbelize.org/stay/

Also get a guidebook -- they're full of good information (I borrow them from a library).

How's that?

The Best Places to Visit in Belize

B elize is small but mighty. The country boasts gorgeous landscapes, fascinating history, incredible biodiversity, and a deep and diverse culture that will attract just about any type of traveler. Whatever your interest might be, Belize is bound to have it. With so much to do and see, it might be overwhelming to know where to go or even where to start. Well, look no further: This is your ultimate guide to Belize's best places to visit.

Ambergris Caye

Ambergris Caye is Belize’s buzziest locale. Visitors flock to the main town of San Pedro to relax on the beach by day and party it up by night. It's home to some of the best resorts, such as Alaia Belize .

Alaia is an all-inclusive that offers luxurious suites, and an impressive culinary menu, and has the only molecular mixologist in the country. While many might be tempted to not leave the beautiful resort, the town of San Pedro is worth exploring during the day to experience local Belizean food. WTF Food Tours takes guests around the island to the best local spots, ordering for you so you can never go wrong.

Mountain Pine Ridge Forest

Located in Belize’s Cayo District, the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest is half pine forest and half jungle covering over 100,000 acres. This area is rich with wildlife, birds, and of course, plants. Only recently did the government begin building the first paved road into the area allowing travelers to explore this beautiful natural reserve. Hidden Valley Wilderness Lodge is a luxury eco-resort covering over 7,000 acres of the park. Guests can hike and explore the surrounding area, as well as nearby sites like the Mayan ruins of Caracol, which are still the largest human-made structures in Belize.

This former fishing village is now a resort hot spot that has managed to hold on to its local Belizean flare. For a relaxing getaway stay at Naia Resort , where guests are given their private beachside villa. From delicious local dishes to a luxurious spa-like oasis, Naia has it all. Naia’s location is also ideal for exploring nearby neighborhoods to get a taste of local life.

Speaking of location, Placencia is on a peninsula in southern Belize this locale gives visitors equal opportunity to take tours into the rainforest and mainland Belize as well as to the nearby Silk Caye Marine Reserve. What's more, the nearby village of Hopkins offers opportunities for visitors to experience the unique Garifuna culture.

If you want to get off the grid and have a private island experience then book a stay on Ray Caye . You can choose between beach cabanas or villas. The honeymoon suite even boasts a private plunge pool. You can borrow a kayak or snorkel equipment by day and enjoy the island’s blue light that shines at night to attract sea life ashore. The perfect spot for wildlife life lovers as Ray Caye is a sea turtle hatching location as well as attracts large birds of prey. If you can’t spend the night there is a smaller area for daytime visitors to enjoy a pool, a beach, and a restaurant where they grow the majority of the greens on the island.

Caye Caulker

Consider Caye Caulker Ambergris' smaller, chiller neighbor. If you're more interested in a good book by the beach than bar hopping then head to this more laid-back alternative. No cars are allowed on Caye Caulker and everyone gets around on bikes or golf carts. This forces a slower, more relaxed way of life. So lie in a hammock and enjoy an ocean view with a fruity drink. If you’re still looking for a bit of adventure Belize’s barrier reef is still only one mile away!

San Ignacio

San Ignacio is the capital of the Cayo District and is known as the adventure capital of Belize. It has a small-town charm, offering local food markets and an Iguana sanctuary. But San Ignacio’s true appeal is its location. It is the perfect jumping-off point for any in-land adventure Belize has to offer. The Cayo District is famous for rainforest excursions or a day trip to the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. There are also several Mayan ruin complexes around San Ignacio including Xunantunich and Cahal Pech. Travelers can enjoy cave tubing or the truly adventurous can venture out to the ATM Cave.

Belize City

Belize City holds the country’s only international airport and services the port for all visiting cruise ships. It’s a shame that the majority of travelers are just passing through as Belize City holds a massive amount of history as well as culture. The Historic Belize City Tour and the Museum of Belize help visitors understand Belize's past and present. Animal lovers will be interested in the Belize Zoo, which focuses on rescued native species and provides them with large open habitats to roam. There are also many nearby attractions like the Altun Ha Ruins or the Community Baboon Sanctuary.

Hummingbird Highway

The Hummingbird Highway is one of four highways in Belize. But it is by far the most scenic drive in the country. It stretches 53 miles from the capital Belmopan to the town of Dangriga. The highway cuts through gorgeous views of forested mountains and tries to find what the locals call the “sleeping giant” hidden in the landscape. Along the way, you can also enjoy pit stops at caves, cenotes, and tons of local food options.

Lighthouse Reef

The Great Blue is one of Belize’s most famous attractions. This UNESCO World Heritage site is the largest sinkhole in the world. Lighthouse Reef is made up of the surrounding cayes that border the sinkhole. You can visit the reef by boat or through a fly-over tour. Snorkelers and scuba divers flock to the great blue hole to see what they can find. The most visited Caye of Lighthouse Reef is Half Moon Caye, which is home to over 4,000 red-footed boobies.

Getting to this cave is not for the faint of heart. The Actun Tunichil Muknal cave, better known as the ATM Cave, was discovered in 1989 and offers a unique look into ancient Mayan rituals. Within this cave, visitors will find the remains of several sacrifice victims as well as ancient utensils, pottery, and other artifacts. However, getting to the cave is not a walk in the park. Visitors must go with guides and will have to complete a somewhat strenuous hike, multiple river crossings, swimming through submerged caves, squeezing through very tight spaces within those caves, and traversing up rock faces. And that’s only one way! If you’re physically up for the challenge, this is an incredibly unique experience and look into the past.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Located near Ambergris Caye, Belize’s barrier reef is the second-largest coral reef structure in the world. While The Blue Hole is the most famous attraction in this barrier reef there is so much more to explore. Home to over 100 species of coral and 500 species of fish, you’ll also likely see nurse sharks, sea turtles, and sting rays. How Chan Marine Reserve welcomes visitors looking to snorkel, scuba dive, fish, or swim in sharks in its Shark Ray Alley.
